Preferred Solution: computer screen keeps going black!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

HI,
I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Thanks

Kim

I am thinking the computer is slow because the driver or video card or something is not working right.  My problem is.  I had this Lenovo computer for a couple of years now.  I just bought a 23" HP S2331a  flat screen monitor.  What do you need to know for me to be able to fix the problem I am having?  The information on the side of the tower is 3000 H210 57091130, Intel GMA3100 graphics.  I am not sure why the computer is doing what is it doing, but I hope you can help me more than HP. The black screen issue happens on startup.  I can see things on the screen up until the login screen attempts to come up and then the screen does not recognize a signal.  I bypass this currently by connecting the old crt screen on until I log in.  Then reconnect the HP screen and wahlah it works.  I can't change the resolution or anyhting like that...... Any thoughts on corredting this so I cna have a working monitor and not have to keep the old crt unit around on startup?Mark

A friend of mine started having a problem with his old dual core computer where the computer seemed like it was booting up but the screen stayed black. This started when he got back from a weeks vacation and found out he lost power in his house. The power was back on when he got home but he could tell with clock being wrong, and neighbors telling him about the outage. He leaves his computer on all the time and when he got home he saw that it was off. When he booted up the only thing he could get was a screen with the XFX logo from the maker of his Geforce GTX 460 video card. Sometimes he wouldn't even get that, just a black screen.
He also connects his usb keyboard in the front and hit the connect to his computer and bent up the keyboard usb connector. I got him another keyboard and replaced the PSU thinking maybe with the power outage the PSU was effected. The computer seemed to boot up and work. Problem is it only worked for about a day (he played video games all day). That night he started with the problem again of black screen.
I thought maybe it was the motherboard then ( the system is an older dual core from 2007), so he purchased the following:

Gateway ModelX4870-UB318
SKU: 6835451
Windows 8 64-bit
Technical details: 3rd Gen Intel® Core? i5 processor; 8GB memory; 1TB hard drive

Re: Screen goes black. Bought new computer and installed video card and still screen

If a new computer begins to exhibit behavior from the old one, I'd remove the commonalities between the both.

You really should have tested the new computer with the onboard GPU and PSU first. Now you need to remove those two and put it back to the original config and test it.

It is also possible that the PSU isn't enough for the video card, if it is multirail and 450W, or low quality PSU. However, it seems more likely if that was the cause, the computer would shut off, not go to a black screen.

Hello, originally my problem is that my internet browsers (Internet explorer, firefox) can not display any kind of pages because of some kind of virus. Also I had some kind of fake Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) asking me to download more fake AV's onto my computer but I knew well enough that it was fake so I close it. This also shows up in safe mode. MSE block me from opening things such as iexplorer.exe or sometimes it would say tskmanager is a virus and it wouldn't let me open anything. So eventually I google this up, and I read somewhere that told me to rename hotfix.exe to hotfix1.exe when I run %APPDATA% so the annoying MSE would stop showing up. It also told me to update my Malwarebyte which I still can not do because I still do not have access to the internet. By the way I am using another computer to type this. So again, I tried to do some more research to fix my internet problem and I found this site that told me to download KillGodzilla.exe and run it and reboot my computer, after that I should update my Malwarebyte but of course, I can't do that because after the WINDOWS loading screen, the blue log in screen doesn't show and displays a black screen which flickers sometimes, after a few minutes it would restart my computer. Also same thing for safe mode. Does anyone know what is going on? Did I screw up my computer to badly? Do I need to reset my BIOS? I am using Windows XP if that helps. I also hav ESET smart security on my computer but I can... Read more

Last night I downloaded a file from a Torrent site - Blackberry stuff (I'm pretty sure most or all was freeware stuff). I just noticed that that file has been removed. Kinda unfortunately because I did leave a comment on what happened to me and I asked if anyone else had the same issue. I'm guessing maybe they did because it is gone now.

I ran my AVG scan on it before opening it. It didn't find anything so I ran the executable. It locked up at one point after I started getting virus warnings from some new program (I did not write down what any of it was :-( ).

I had to do a hard shutdown. When it came up to my choices window, i.e. choose Safe Mode, Last Know, etc. I was unable to make any selections with my keyboard so it continued to boot Windows normally. The XP splash screen comes on and then the screen turns black with nothing further happening.

I can do a hard reboot but I can't get into Safe Mode because the keyboard isn't working and normal windows isn't working either.

Got any suggestions? Do I have some serious funk? Did some piece of hardware decide to stop functioning properly (power supply)?

I have been Googling this issue without any success. Sometimes it feels like you are the only one to ever have a particular issue.

This happened very late last night and now I am at work so I'm not able to touch it for the next 5 hours or so. The only two things that I can do right now is go into the BIOS settings or watch it go into Windows and then get the... Read more

hi all, a recent problem has occurred with my computer. whilst playing games, i can play for a few minutes, and then a black screen appears, with sound looping and the screen status colour changes from solid green to flickering green. This is XP Professional by the way.My system is as follows:P5N-E Sli MoboC2D E750 2.66ghz2.0 gb ramXFX 8800GTS 320mbThe games in which this occur are as follows:Team Fortress 2Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionGuild WarsHowever, what is strikingly odd about this problem is that it only occurs about 80% of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion absolutely perfectly.I have searched forums, and it seems this can be linked to overheating, but my temperature gauge on the front of the computer says I run at about 30 C most of the time, and the computer itself is not hot inside at all. All fans are spinning fine, no dust.I have heard other issues such as graphics card drivers, and i have tried 3 different drivers, all of which did not overcome this problem.Could it possibly be sound drivers? Or possibly something wrong with the motherboard? Thanks in advance.Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from the taskbar on my desktop. The upgrade was successful and I was able to use my computer normally. Today, when I started my computer, a disk check was started. After a long time of being stuck at 10%, I force booted the computer off. Now, the computer boots past the Windows 10 logo and goes to a black screen with the cursor. This screen appears before the login screen does. I am able to move the mouse but that is the limit of my control. The mouse is also showing the little blue loading circle next to it blinking over and over.

Dell vostro 220

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I need your help!

I have an old (meaning I got it in 2000) Gateway Essential. It was working fine until Monday afternoon. My mom was using it and the screen went black. The monitor was still on and the power light on the tower was on, but it wasn't doing anything. When I restarted the computer, it brings up an error with my GoBack feature, saying that there could be a corrupt file in some software or a problem with the drive. It says to go through scandisk, which I do and it goes through and starts up fine. Then if I try running the anti-virus, log on to AOL to go on line, it will work for a few minutes, and then the same thing happens again. I restart it again and go through the whole process. I've run the defragger, uninstalled AOL and my Kodak Easyshare software and my Scanner Software, and am still having issues. I'm not sure what to try next--I'm not sure if its a software thing or a virus. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hey guys,

I've been having problems with my Dell Inspiron 6000 for a while now. It's a great computer when it works- which it rarely does.

I'm going to explain my problem:

--Basically when I start the computer it goes straight to black screen. Windows does not start-up.

--I've called the Dell people at least 6 times over the last few years, and they've talked me through reinstalling the operating system, which I do. After the operating system is reinstalled the computer usually works for a few weeks, then goes back to the black screen.

--I have a virus protector on the computer, so I don't think i'm just catching new virus' with every reinstallation.

--I'm really not sure what to do. Do I need a new motherboard, harddrive? I don't know, but it's odd because after I reinstall the operating system I do get a few weeks where it works properly... then it breaks down again.

Any advice would be great!

thanks

Sounds like the MBR is corrupthttp://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...r.mspx?mfr=trueYou can create your own Recovery Console disk with this file:http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.isoYou must burn this file to a CD as an ISO. Post back if you need more information on how to do this.Insert the Recovery Console CD into the CD drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. i've had a laptop for 8 year now (Evesham Voyager X5) and about 3 years back, knocked it off a table which messed up the screen so it wouldn?t light up. however everything else works fine on it and i?ve been hooking it up to an old block monitor, but i find it annoying now as i have lots of valuable software on the machine. i?m not too great on the hardware side of computing, however i did a bit of research today, watched some utube videos and found out it?s most likely either the inverter or backlight gone bust. the thing is though, as the computer so old, i can?t seem to find anything about its spec and i was wondering if it matter what make/model inverter i bought if i was to buy one too the computer's voltage and the lcd screen it has on it already?

Answer:Old computer and black screen!

I would say it's more likely screen/backlight.
If it was just the inverter, the screen would still work but be very dim (almost black).
Shine a torch to see if you can see anything.
When I knocked my 2 yr old laptop (3 months at time) off an 18" side table onto carpet, it actually cracked the screen fairly obviously.
New screen cost me £70 from amazon
They are bit cheaper now, but you might have trouble with an 8 yr old laptop.
Replacement was easy for me (I am an electronic engineer). There are loads of Youtube vids and of course mfrs Service and Maintenance Manual Guide pdfs to help.
If you are practical, it is certainly doable.
But if pennies allow, you might want to consider a new laptop and connect your old Hard Drive in a caddy via USB to transfer everything over.
Old applications won't transfer, but there are lots of Freeware sites for most things (unless you have something special)

Your malware is a variant of this infection. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. Read the Danger: Remote Access Trojans. If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.Although the backdoor Trojan has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. The computer that I have, had an operating system, motherboard and restore CDs that were innerconnected and then I changed the motherboard and the restore CDs stopped working. I then bought a new version of XP. This Version was professional and the old version was home edition. I got another old computer and tried to get age of empires 2 to run with a lan with the first computer described. I then concluded that microsoft wont allow different versions of windows to inner connect on a lan caming connection. I then decided to put the old motherboard back in the computer so the restore CD's should work again, and I then installed the other version of windows on the other old computer. I deleted the hard-drive of the motherboard first computer, and then reinstalled the installation CDs, because it failed to boot the first time before the hard-drive deletion. It is still failing to boot, and I am trying to delete the hard-drive again, incase I deleted the other one; (Because there was some swapping and some master/slave slot determining that had been forgotten by me.) Now when I say it doesn't boot, what I mean is, it shows the screen that states my graphic card, then scans for hard-drive, then it says "Found" or whatever it says, and then when it tries to load up window, it freezes at a black screen.

I hope you find the problem before I pull my hair out.

The only way that I have found that works is this: I unplug all the cords and take off the case, then I take a small vacume and just vacum the motherboard and video card, and then it will work for about 1 week. 1 week later I have to do the same thing.. its getting annoying. This wouldn't happen to be a few days after the warranty ran out would it???Seriously, from your brief description, this a number of things, but I would first think power supply. If this is still under warranty (or extended warranty), you should bring it in for warranty service while you still have it. If you are going to diagnose this and need our help, please include model and more details including any changed to hardware (upgraded video card, etc), recent changes to software, recent problems, and more details on what you see and hear (fans, lights, beeps, monitor lights, etc.You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hiya to all who read this. My mom's computer screen will suddenly turn black. You can't do anything to bring it back except manual shut down. My Q is....monitor or video card? I believe I have my old video card that came with my computer that I could swap out to check, and I could always take over my monitor to check that also. Would there be anything else that may cause such a thing? Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Yee

Answer:Black Computer Screen

Both good ideas.

Try swapping the monitor first, since you don't have to do as much work.

If you still have the problem, then swapping video cards would make sense.

Let us know, OK?

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 w/ AMD Processor. I've had it for about 2 years now, recently the screen has not turned on, it is black. I have tried a "hard reset" and it actually worked for a while, but when I tried to turn it back on, same problem occurred, the "hard reset" does not work anymore. The lights on the caps lock button keep blinking, and the power button light also turns on. I tried connecting to an external monitor and it does not work as well. What are the possibles reasons for this problem?

Thank you

Answer:Black Computer Screen

What do you mean by "not work as well"?

Well, if the external works fine, you LCD screen is shot, most likely a bad backlight. But if both you LCD and external don't work, that normally is a video card problem. Could also be another system fault.

I have an FIC K7MNF-64 motherboard and I tried to install it into the computer I have been putting together but something isn't working. The first time I put everything together and turned it on a giant e came on the monitor, I'm guessing it's for emachines since the motherboard I am using is used in them a lot. After the e came up there was nothing, just black. I pushed every button people have told me to push to bring up the BIOS screen but nothing. Ever since that first time of turning it on not even the e screen will show up. I can hear the computer booting up but I see nothing on the monitor. The monitor power button always flashes like its on standby and its not getting anything from the computer. Also there is a beeping noise that repeats and repeats when I turn the computer on. I looked up the BIOS beep codes but it didn't have anything for the beeping that I hear. The only thing I bought used is the motherboard. I was wondering if there is any configurations I have to do for the motherboard to get it to work. Any special installation CD to configure it to the cpu?? I just need to get this computer working since my laptop stopped working. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Hello,

I have recently bought a barbones kit from TigerDirect and got it all hooked up and running. Worked great for 2days then before I went to work today as I was logged into World Of Warcraft the screen went full orange then black. Computer stayed on just black screen and no response from the keyboard and mouse. So I decide ok its not going to come back on turn it off. Turn it back on fans kick on everything sounds like its going to get back up and going but.... Screen just stays black nothing is going to it. So I call up my buddy who knows a few things about computers and he says to go ahead and switch the ram around. I switch it around to vaious spots doesn't work. He says ok take the video card out and try another or use onboard video. The motherboard I have has an onboard so I take out the video card and try the onboard same thing nothing on the screen. By this time im running out of time before work so he says to unplug the unplug the power and the atx plugs in the mobo and let it sit while im at work. 4hours pass I come back home plug it all back in try again fail. So I think ok well lets see if this ram really does work throw it into my second computer here and it loads up just fine. So as I see it right now it is not the ram. so we are down to it either being the CPU, MOBO, Video Card or Power supply. I am in the process right now of taking the cmos out and from what I have read from my Mobo Manual I have it set to reset the cmos right now as well.

I will be surfing the web or playing a game when my computer just goes to a black screen like it is not communicating with my monitor anymore. I have tried a diffrent video card, diffrent monitor and diffrent cord and still get the same problem.

It appears that it does not shut off as my hard drive is still spinning and one time when it was at the blackscreen I heard a sound of my router conenction being dropped and re-established.

I am thinking it might be the ram as one time when I couldn't get it to boot back up after doing this I removed and re-seated the ram and it was fine. I am not sure though as it is pretty new ram so I thought I'd run my log here first.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

So recently my computer has been crashing... well I do not know if the computer is crashing or my graphics card is..

I will be playing CODMW3 or a few other games that I own, when both my screens go black, and the sound lags... Like if any sound that was currently playing when it crashed drags on forever.... I am not sure if the computer itself is crashing because all my fans are running and lights are on... ??

I am tried MANY things to narrow down the problem, such as...
Tried using a different video card... Same thing....
Tried adjusting the amount of ram, and doing memory diag...
Checking Temps of my CPU and GPU.. both in decent ranges...

This issue is never at the same time.. I could be playing for 30 minutes before it goes, or sometimes right when i jump into the first game of the day...

I even thought this could be a windows issue, as unlikely as that was.. And re installed windows..

My specs are...

AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3.20 GHz
16GB of memory
MSI Nvidia 550 ti
Rocket Fish 5.1 Audio card

Please I would love for any insights on why this might be....

One other thing.. Maybe is related maybe not... My 700W power supply, Rocket fish aswell... Will stay "kinda" running when i shut down my computer.. Or the 120 m fan will stay running with its lights on...

Thanks for the read I hope to get some good feed back! I wish to resolve this asap!

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I bought this new computer 2 months ago and i've been having some problems.
It randomly freezes while playing games (mostly WoW) or just doing other things, first the picture freezes while the mouse is still working, then the sound and the mouse cursor stop and the screen goes black saying "No Signal" and after few seconds the computer restarts.
I have attached the last 2 minidump files (only have 2 since i re-installed the windows not long ago).
I bought a new PSU few weeks ago and still i get the same crashes.
My computer configuration is:
MB: Asus M4N98TD Evo
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 260 3.2GHz
VGA: Asus EAH5750 1GB DDR5
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Kingston
HDD: WDC WD1600JS
PSU: Delux ATX 800W P4

Can you help me about this problem? Because at the moment i have no idea what might be causing the problems.
Thank you.

Just a little backround on my laptop.  It's about six years old, and has 8 gig of RAM and optional ATI Radeon graphics.  It has been used heavily as I do electronic medical records with it as well as personal stuff.  It's not turned off very often; I just keep it in hibernation. One day a couple of weeks ago I had several tabs open in Chrome, one of them being SiriusXM streaming.  My back was turned as I was with a patient and all of a sudden I heard a buzz coming from the audio that lasted a few seconds, then no sound.  When I finally looked at the computer, the screen was black, but everything else was running (leds, hard drive, fan, etc). I pulled the AC power and the battery, restarted Windows in safe mode, and had a display.  I then deleted the video drivers for ATI and Intel, then restarted the computer.  It came back with the screen looking fairly normal to before it went belly up, and also had sound.  Windows then automatically reloaded the video drivers (during which time a box came up and told me the ATI driver didn't exist) and then prompted me to restart.  I did, and sound, leds, hard drive, everything came up except black screen again. Well, I repeated this several times, even went and downloaded the ATI driver off of the site, with the same result.  At that point I decided to use the computer as it was after the first restart and select "restart later" so it wouldn't go back to the black screen.  I... My desktop does not want to start up anymore. There is no BIOS beep or start up beep when I turn on my desktop. The computer itself turns on but the screen gets no signal. I tried to restart the desktop a couple of times but its still doing the same thing. I also tried to do warm restarts but nothing has helped so far.

2 weeks ago it also happened, and I pretty much just unplugged the CMOS battery, as well as the cable the psu, and the video card. I cleaned everything out to make sure there was not dust messing anything up. It worked again up until now.

I have not added or changed anything to the desktop for the last 2 years and it just suddenly started acting up.

Any clue what it could be?

I'm working on two different computers today. The one here, is my son's computer. This is a windows XP with only 248 MB RAM and 40GB space, with only 12.2 GB space left to it. That is probably the whole problem--we need more RAM and more storage. Right now, we don't have a whole lot of money to spend on computers, so I'm wondering if I should do a whole reformat (if that is the correct term for wiping everything out and reinstalling everything from the cd that came with the computer)
Here is what I have done:
Ran PC Doctor--everything is fine
Updated and ran Avast! antivirus, Adaware, Spybot, ccleaner

Did the msconfig startup item list, turning off a bunch of stuff.
Ran Disc defrag, checkdisk, compressed old files
uninstalled many unused programs and am starting to load some other stuff on a pen drive and cds
There was one virus in the av scan, a win32:CTX, which was in a system restore file. That was quarantined.
We have owned this computer from the start, it was at one time the whole family's computer, so various levels of games and school programs (we homeschool) have been loaded and eventually removed via add/remove programs. Eventually it became a shared computer for my sons' school and games, and then only one son's computer, for school and games. I thought I read somewhere that despite being removed, lots of programs still have left "bits and pieces" on the 'puter, and that eventually I would have to do a &qu... Read more

Answer:Slow Computer, Getting Black Screen

Doing what you describe here is called a "clean install", and while there may be other solutions to your problem, a clean install may be the easiest. Simply back up all the important files to a CD-R/RW or a USB flash drive (don't back up any programs though, they won't work) and then put the Windows CD into the drive and reboot. Follow the onscreen directions to reinstall the operating system, make sure you have the Windows licence key BEFORE you do this though, or the install won't work.

About the licence thing, a licence means that you have the permission to put the program on ONE computer at any ONE time per licence. Uninstall the program on the computer, and you get your licence back.

When trying to start up my computer it starts up normally but after the windows XP load screen the mouse disappears and the screen remains black and I am not able to use the mouse and keyboard. I turn it off and try again with the last known configuration and it does the same thing. I opened the tower up to see if anything was loose but everything was secure. I also tried a different monitor but it still doesn't start. I thought it might be the power supply but that worked fine. I have done all that i can do and would like some help.

Hello danecock, Welcome to TSF!

This is quite normal for the system to act in this manner.
Just leave it for about 2 minutes, and you will see the "Windows is Starting Up...Please wait..."; then, the "Welcome" screen with your mouse cursor, and eventually your desktop will appear.

Hope this helps.

You may need to perform a system restore back to a date when the PC was not having this issue. Use the F8 button when booting the computer and select the "Repair Your Computer" option. You can perform a system restore to an earlier time through that (Granted you have not turned off system restore).

Do you have any friends who have some tech knowledge/experience?

If her harddrive is as full as you say it is that is going to cause issues as you are experiencing. Suggest for the future you invest in an external harddrive to store items you want to save. And it seems you will need to delete a lot of files, etc. to free up space. basically Windows can't work.

I have had this problem for about a year. I have taken my computer to a computer repair place in town but they were unable to fix it. When I play certain games (WarcraftIII,Rome Total War,NWN,ect.), the monitor will all of a sudden go black. This can happen when I first start the game, or an hour or more into it. Turning the monitor off an on doesn't fix anything, and the OS is off as far as I know(no sound, no way to get anything but the black screen) but the power supply is still running.
Some suggestions I have heard are:
A monitor problem(which I don't think it is because I have switched monitors and it still happens),
A heating problem (all the fans are working as far as I know and the system temp is around 23 and cpu 44),
Or a power supply issue (this is the most likely, other than maybe my graphics card just being faulty. I have a 350W, (my brother has the exact same computer as me except for a 300W power supply [his also has the same problem but much less frequent]) and it checks out okay exept that the +12 V is close to the low limit (something like 11.2 when the limits like 11.0).
I don't know what components take +12V so I haven't been able to test that aspect yet.

So I read that Trend Micro Systems is better then Avast so I uninstalled Avast and installed Trend Micro Systems Pro 2009, at that point I did a update for the new AV I had and it told me to restart to complete the update, so I do that, but once my computer starts and it says Toshiba, it tells me to choose between: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last known good config, or start windows normally, if I choose last known good configuration or start normally, my screen goes black, and I never reach the windows logo with the bar, if I choose safe mod, I get a bunch of text, and the text just stays there.Any help is GREATLY appreciatedMuch Thanks

Hi Everyone! I have a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 4GB graphics card, I have been using my card just fine since I have gotten it, but today my computer restarted to update, since the update my graphics card has been showing the delay for a second or two then it just stops, the monitor does not say no signal, it still shows as it is connected, the computer is still fully responsive, infact I am typing this post with it, through teamviewer on my kindle, there is no onboard graphics on this computer, what should i do? I cant roll back the update because apparently system restore points are disabled on windows 10 automaticly

Answer:Black Screen, but computer is still responsive

Hi Lenovo forum, I have a problem with my X120e laptop screen. My laptop is old, 5 years old now. So, let's think about other causes than that. Whenever I start the computer, the monitor does not show anything. It stays black as if it was not turned on. I may have missed some very subtle light changes on the screen when the computer is running, though. However, the computer itself is running. For instance, I am able to use my TV HDMI plug to see the graphic display of the computer, and I could litterally ignore this issue by using the TV as my new monitor, but that's not what I want. This is not the first time this is happening. Last time, I just opened/closed the computer to get the screen working in about three tries. Ever since then, I never shut down my laptop until yesterday night I accidentally did so.  Any fixes? I tried the battery removal method, but it didn't work.

Okii dokii. I was sitting there playing Half-Life 2 (It's not spammed or virused or anything, I've had it for a year now) and right in the middle of my game the screen goes totally black, and a bar at the top left corner is blinking, like it's waiting for me to type something. So I hit the Windows key. Nothing happens. Control+Alt+Delete, again, nothing happens. I went into a frenzy and hit everything on my keyboard, and still nothing happened! I know it's still connected and on and stuff, 'Cos whenever I hit like Control+C or something it'll beep. I can't reboot, I have other important things on there. Like essays that took me weeks to work on. And science fair. (which I negected to save...) So. Anyone know what to do?

I'm hoping I'm posting in the right place. I am new to this forum.A few days ago I turned on my HP Pavillion dv6449us laptop, and all the lights on the keyboard, and the power light came on, but I had a black screen (the monitor never came on).I played around with a little bit and found that if I hit F8 when I pressed the power button it would let me start up in safe mode (sometimes). I talked to HP (which weren't much help because my warranty ran out 2 months ago on a 14 month old computer!!!!) He did help me get into my Bios (which I could have done myself)I eventually got the computer to boot up without hitting the F8 button but my screen was messed up. You could see Windows Vista starting up but there were about a million lines crossing the screen (which led me to believe there was something wrong with my video card). I started back up in F8 mode and uninstalled my NVidia graphics card and restarted so it installed the standard VGA driver. (I found this as a solution online).I started up the computer and again got the black screen but the LED's lit up. I noticed that my hard drive only blinked twice before nothing else happened. After a few seconds the computer rebooted itself. This was continual. I just let it continue to reboot (wanting to see if anything would happen) and it eventually started up on it's own.If I restart the computer (after I got in ok once) I was back to the black screen.I have reseated the memory, hard drive and video card an... I'm using Vista home premium and everything was working fine up until the other day. My computer froze up and I shut it down to restart. Upon restarting, I was given the option to start windows normally or in safe mode. I selected to start up windows. After that all I got was a black screen. The computer is still running, I can hear the fans and the ligts are on.

I have been looking for a solution to this problem and would really like to fix it myself. I have tried all of the F-menu options, but all I get is the black screen. Vista came pre installed on my computer, so I don't have the Vista cd/dvd.

Please help me if you can.

Answer:Computer won't boot, all I get is a black screen

Hi

May I ask you what ?computer ?you? have?
Why you don?t post this important information?

Can you boot in safe mode? Maybe a driver or virus has something muddled up in Windows registry and so the computer can?t boot properly anymore.

In worst case you have to reinstall Windows using Toshiba recovery disk. :(

Please put your System Specs in your Profile

If you have a proprietory computer like Dell; HP; Acer etc, please manually write this in the mobo field (ie Dell Dimension 3100 - as an example)

Mind you, this is most likely an LCD monitor fault. If you have another Display (from another computer that you could swap yours with - as a test) that would be ideal.

Hello,

I have an laptop HP Pavilion ze5600 with Windows XP home edition. I received an error message regarding Memory dumping while I was on line answering e-mail. The message did not stay long enough for me to write down error codes but did say if this was the first time this happend to restart the computer which I did. Worked for a couple of minutes and then same message. When tried to restart computer this time, just black screen. No cursor, no message, did not move to any further screen. I know this sounds ridiculous but if the computer sits over night, I am able for one time to hit F8 and get safe mode and other options. First time I was able to get in I went to Last Known Good Configuration and did a system restore but computer froze at tail end, so bad date choice. I did try numerous times to get in again, but could not. Second time I got in I backed up information I needed using Roxio but had to go to work, get kids to school etc so after inserting second CD, I didn't watch what happened and came back to a screen discussing memory dumping and then could not get into my computer. This morning able to get to Last Known Configuration but then computer froze at window showing Window logo, am going to try and get into to Safe Mode tommorrow and try to run virus software. I have tried numerous different things trying to get past black screen. Boot with only ac, Boot only with battery, hold down power button without battery or ac and then use both to boo... Read more

Hello,
When i turn on my computer, it just goes to a black screen, no sign of the bio's screen or windows xp screen. No flickering or anything, no indication its connected except for the fact when i unplug the monitor the screen saying there is no cable on the monitor shows up. i tried a different monitor on it, same thing happens. It is connected to the on-board graphics card. I tried removing the hard drive to see if that was the problem, no luck. Shouldn't it at least show the bios screen? I tried removing the battery without any luck hoping it would reset any bios, I tried removing the ram, no luck. The power supply works, fans spinning on CPU and HD. I tried connecting my PCI GeForce fx5200 128mb graphics card to see if it was the intergrated graphics with the problem, but same thing, just a black screen. I also tried connecting another HD to it, no luck. I also tried connect this HD to another computer and it just comes up showing a recent hardware change made the computer start like this asking me to boot into safe mode or normally, but neither of them work, just freeze the computer once clicked on. Any ideas on what is wrong with it?

Hello I have a problem with my computer crashing and giving me a black screen. When it's crashing the computer keeps on running but the screen says no signal and I have to reboot.
I don't really know if its a virus because it wont give itself the time for a search or if something has been overheated but it has been doing this for a while now. If i stay away from the computer for a day or so it takes a longer time before it crashes.
Also i just vacuumed the computers fans for the first time in a long time since before it had been quite dusty.
Anyone knows anything to help me?

windows starts and then the screen slowly goes black but if you tilt the computer you can still see very faint images

Answer:computer starts and then the screen goes black

Whenever you can move or vibrate a computer to change what happens it is a hardware fault. Possibly a screen fault, or backlight. A connection fault is always possible but the effects are usually quite sudden.EDIT:Another thought. It could simply be that tilting enables you to see something that is very dim rather than it being an intermittent fault (which is what I had in mind above). In which case there are quite a lot of possibilities for a dim screen, mostly along the lines suggested. Go to BIOS then watch the screen for a while and see if it fades there. If so it is definitely a hardware fault - fairly certain anyhow.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

HP p6130y, AMD Phenom X49750 quad processor, 8gb ram (original), ATI Radeon HD 6450 (upgrade), windows 7 x64 (upgrade)

Originally had freezing problem when I first upgraded to Windows 7. Was able to fix it via these threads (can't remember how). It started freezing up recently, particularly after loss of power or sleep/hibernation. Format hdd, reinstalled windows 7, started freezing up randomly. Tried to install Vista x64 from cd, started freezing during installation. So figure it's hardware. Removed video card, can't get anything from onboard video card to show up, vga or dvi. Powers on to a blackscreen. (both cables work fine with an alternate computer)

I could reinstall the video card and I may/may not get it the boot up screen, but what can I do about the freezing issue?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer will not boot up, black screen.

find your motherboard manual online and figure out how to reset the bios, or just remove the motherboard battery AND unplug your power supply for 30 seconds. This will hopefully allow the onboard video to work. Then reflash your bios, since yours may be corrupted right now. If these do not cause the freezing to stop, you have a hardware problem. Either a bad hard drive, motherboard, or power supply are possible.

Any Suggestions?

First try a simple reset of the BIOS see if that helps.

Next try booting into safe mode with command prompt

once you get to the command prompt type explorer.exe post back and let us know if it starts.

hey guys,

I was attempting to clean my computer screen today by wiping it off with a tissue paper but I accidently wiped over a bunch of buttons on my screen, and I have no idea what the function of those is lol.
My PC screen went black, and I don't know to get things back to normal. I still hear the computers noise so I know it's on. I already tried to turn off the PC and unplug it, but that didn't fix the problem. When I start it up again the screen remains black.

I've also managed to lose the manual. Any idea's? here's a pic FYI

I got a new graphics card today (GTS 450) and I slotted it in, when I start it up the screen stays black, however, if I leave it for 20 seconds or so I can hear the windows start up sound.. I know my screen isnt gone because I've connected it to my laptop and it works fine. I have the Blue and White cable plugged in my monitor and my computer and still nothing, thanks.

Answer:Computer screen stays black

Do you get any signs of "life" (like the BIOS Info screen etc)
If so it's probably a driver issue (did you remove the old drivers before the switch) ?

If not, there are IMHO only 5 possibilities:
#1 The card wasn't seated properly -- reseat it
#2 The card draws more power than your PSU can handle -- get a better PSU
#3 you forgot to connect the extra power cable --connect it
#4 you bend one or more pins in the video cable -- replace
#5 The card is defective -- RMA

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

Answer:Screen Goes Black After Turning On Computer

If I read this correctly it seems as if even on another monitor it has a bit of an issue.  Have you tried getting into safe mode as you boot up?  Try tapping F8 repeatedly as it boots, if it works in safe mode that would rule out a hardware issue.

I just recently bought a new 64gb SSD and installed it into my computer as the case manufacturer said in the instructions. I did everything as planned, then plugged my computer back in, to turn it on and get a black screen. No bios or anything. I tried plugging it into my alternate display to see if that was the issue, and it was not the issue. I later tried booting the computer without the SSD plugged in which yeilded the same result as before. I hope to get help soon so i can get my rig running and install my Windows 8 onto it.

*NOTE: if this post is in the incorrect section of the forums, i ask that a moderator move it to the section that is right.

Answer:Computer getting black screen after installing new SSD.

Eh, I don't know what you did and it doesn't even really matter.

Here's what to do.

1) Power off.

2) Remove SSD physically.

3) Boot to Windows.

4) Follow this:
Exit all Windows-based programs.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

5) Power Off.

6) Re-attach SSD.

7) Boot to bios.

8) Change the SATA mode to AHCI and save.

9) Boot to Windows.

10) Format the new SSD.

11) Research for yourself the best care procedures for it.

Hi, I hoping that somebody can help me with the problem i have.

It all started yesterday when i turned my computer on and signed in to my normal account. This then sent me to a tempory account desktop. I did some research on this and apparntly my user profile had become corrupt.

I ran SFC /Scannow in the command window as adminstrator, the results told me files were corrupt and could not be fixed. I tried this again 3-4 times as i had read that this may take a few times to fix. This didnt work.

I then tried to create a new account which i did and copy the contents of the brokwen user profile to the new user profile. this is when i found the Desktop folder would not move because it was corrupt.

I have items that i had saved to my desktop which i really need and wouldnt mind formatting the drive if need be but i need to get the files but the desktop was corrupt so couldnt get in the folder.

I looked to try and restore to a previouse day incase it was an update that made this happen but i have no restore points which i thought was odd as this should create them after each update ?

At this point this tempory account would not search and did not have inter internet connections of apps it was just very basic.
I then ran the line in the command window to look online to get uptodate fixes cant remeber excatly what it was, something like /online /restorehealth

This completed and i then ran sfc /scannow again which again said files are corrupt unable to fix.

I restarted my mac... Read more

Answer:Computer only booting to Black Screen

I can't help with the black screen.
Maybe someone here can.

I can offer advice you can use in the future to fix a situation like this.

I use Macrium Reflect - {Standard version} to make images of my OS.

If something goes wrong that I can't fix, I'll insert my USB image & restore my computer to the date of when the image was made.
All fixed.

I keep updating the images.
Especially after installing Windows Updates.

A link---

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Having a backup image to restore to is nice.

Format a usb drive as NTFS & not Fat 32 so you get 1 big image file instead of a bunch of 4 GB files.

Good luck in the future.

I have an Asus Eee PC that I got last year for my birthday. It has Windows 7 as the operating system. When I turn to computer on it seems to be working normal. When it comes time to log into a user profile and I click on the administrator profile (which is the one I use) and type in the password. The computer logs onto the profile but the screen stays completely black. I can still hear the computer running but the screen doesn't change. This has happened before but the toolbar was always visible at the bottom of the screen and now it's not. The only thing I can do with the screen black is type in Ctrl Alt and Delete to get the menu. Nothing on the menu seems to be helping with the issue.
I decided that I better see if the same thing was happening with my guest profile too. When I logged into my guest profile everything is working fine and that's what I'm on right now. However, the administrator profile has all my documents that I need for school and work so factory resetting or the possibly of wiping the computer isn't really an option.
Thank you for your time.

Ok so my Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop with Windows Vista is having problems. I turn the laptop on and all I get is a black screen. The blue power button is on but the screen shows nothing, not even a start up screen. I tried the whole process of taking out the battery and holding the power button for 60 seconds, and then putting the battery back in. That actually gets the laptop to work and to start up correctly. However, after I turn it off and come back to use it the next time, it goes back to the same problem with the black screen and i end up having to take the battery out and hold the power button again for it to work. I dont want to have to do this every time I want to use the computer, can someone here please help me? Do you think I need a new battery?

Alright so here's everything i have
- evea 600b power supply.
- msi 970a-g43 plus mother board
-AMD fx 8350 CPU
- 1 tb hard drive
- 2 Kingston hyper fury ram
-geoforce 1060 armor 3g graphics card

So I plugged everything in to my monitor and I'm getting a black screen and I can't even get into bios menu.

Everything turns on, all fans spin, led come on, and I can hear the hard drive work. So that's telling me the power supply works

I already tried taking out the mother board battery waiting a long time and reinstalling, and also tried to jump the pins to restart the mother board, but still a black screen.

I have tried a single ram stick and both ram sticks. Still a black screen. I first installed the ram how the manual told me, then I tried moving the ram to every position.. and every position that's not correct I get a BEEP from the speaker.

When I have the graphics card connected to the motherboard, but NO power going to the graphics card I get an ERROR message on the SCREEN saying I need to plug power to the graphics card. When I do PLUG power to the graphics card, my screen goes black

So after all that I believe my mother board is fine due to the beeps, and also the error message when I don't plug in power to the graphics card. So it seems the mother board recognizes that I have the graphic card installed but no power.

Do you think it could be a DOA graphics card?

Hi guys,
I am having a massive problem with my desktop. When I turn it on, it just sits there with a black screen. The HDD access light blinks for a few secs, then stops. It's custom built by a computer store, with a Gigabyte GA-P35-S3 mobo, Intel Core 2 Duo (unsure of exact model) overclocked to 3.06GHz, Galaxy nVidia GT240 1GB graphics card, Western Digital 500GB hard drive and an ASUS MW220 22" monitor. I can't boot it to a Linux LiveCD either, cause I don't even see the BIOS startup. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with it?
