Keyboard is randomly typing 2 or more characters instead of 1

Question: Keyboard is randomly typing 2 or more characters instead of 1

Hi guys i have a 3 weeks old mechanical keyboard, so practically is new, and after a while i realised that sometimes, randomly, 2 or more characters are being typed instead of 1.
I would like to tell me please if you think it is something to do with my pc or windows, or it is the keyboard's fault and i should have it replaced.

Preferred Solution: Keyboard is randomly typing 2 or more characters instead of 1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Keyboard is randomly typing 2 or more characters instead of 1

Hi try the keyboard on another computer or try another keyboard on your computer that should tell you if it's the keyboard or the computer.

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. The problem seems to be with t... Read more

hi bijoy3d,

Welcome to the Forums.

What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

Hi,
As stated above in the questionnaire, my system was sluggish and I ran my PCMatic scan which would stop running about 40% through the scan. I ran Malwarebytes (free) with no issues found. Removed PCMatic and installed AVG (free) which found some issues and cleaned them up but performace wasn't improved much. My keyboard then began to act quirky by characters not appearing or the cursor jumping around or nothing will happen but the "system busy wheel" pops up for a few seconds before characters appear on the screen.

I came back to you guys because TwinHeadedEagle was so effective at helping me with my desktop 18 mos ago that I was hoping for help.

Thanks, regards and please advise if I can once again get some assistance,
Sandy Lanz

Answer:Strange behavior like typing & no characters appear, cursor jumps randomly

Hello,
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Whenever I type certain characters another character will pop up with it. For example, I try to type "L" and when I'm not using the onscreen keyboard it types as ";L". There are several different keys this is happening to but it is not happening with every key. This just started about 30 minutes ago. I cleaned my keyboard and it started malfunctioning about 10 minutes after Happens to thw following characters I've found l =;lp=poo=poa= select all and several more

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

Hello a while back my friend spilt a bit of soda on my laptops keyboard, I dried, and flipped my PC over flat on a towel. There was no damage for about a month, but now some key do multiple actions. Example: Pressing (Backspace) now moves the curser to the right one space, turn my volume down once, and then Backspace. Is there a way to fix this myself or would I have to take my PC into a repair store? Or have to replace my keyboard entirely?

If I type a web address in Chrome, Explorer or Firefox it comes out as random letters, symbols and numbers and the same if I try to type an email in yahoo or gmail. As I say, it is fine typing in Word. Any ideas gratefully received.

Answer:keyboard typing wrong characters

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Answer:new problem, keyboard is not typing accurate characters,

There are a mix of ideas here:http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-...Do not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When you restart the computer it will find your keyboard as new hardware then re-install the software from the supplied drivers. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.
I am very careful with the laptop as I am sure there was no spill.

It's been like this for 3 months, my computer will open some tabs on firefox (or whatever my cursor is hovering on) and will start typing something like '11' '0111' '5555' etc then the computer starts to shutdown by itself closing all programs and then going off, I'm pretty sure its not about hardware stuff (heat, dust). HelloWe have an issue where our users of the Lenovo Yoga type in Word or Excel.Whilst typing a sentence users have reported a series of sevens (7777777777) appearing like that randomly throughout.  Sometimes random letters too.  This sequence does not stop until you press Enter. You have to constantly keep deleting and restarting a sentence. This happens when using an external USB keyboard and monitor.  Our Yogas do not have NUMLOCK function on the laptop itself.  Any help solving this mystery would be appreciated! thank you

Answer:Keyboard randomly inserts numbers/letters whilst typing

Hi Redr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with mistyping the letters on your Lenovo Yoga.

Please let us know is the system is Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga or Lenovo Ideapad Yoga?
Check with booting the system into safe mode and check if the issue persists in that also.
Check with uninstalling all keyboard adapters from device manager.

Hope this helps!

I have a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop, purchased last December. Just this past week, I've had an issue with the PC settings menu popping up randomly when  type n the keyboard. I haven't made a connection with a particular keystroke combination, but it's very distracting (it just did this in the middle of the word "distracting, after the first t). At first I thought it might be because my wrist hits the keypad a lot when typing, but I'm certain it wasn't this time. I have windows 8.1 as the operating system.

I recently updated my laptop (Lenovo Z570) to Windows 10. Now whenever I'm trying to type anything (my password to log onto the computer, within a web browser, in a Word doc, etc) it will all of a sudden act as if I clicked somewhere else and doesn't acknowledge what I'm typing anymore. And then a second or two later it will recognize me typing again and allow me to type. It does not pick up where it left off though, it will just resume from whichever key I'm hitting at that moment. It took me double the length of time just to type this paragraph because it keeps stopping every few seconds.

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Hi

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

Really frustrating

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

Answer:Re: Satellite A60-106 - Dropping characters when typing

Have you installed drivers for an external Keyboard or Mouse? (for example Logitech or Microsoft)

If you boot into MSDOS, does it still drop characters? You can download a DOS bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

What BIOS Version is installed? Do you have the latest version?

Hi nfarrier, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Yes, it can be virus. Did you made any changes on the PC recently?

As mentioned by Yard Dog, run Malwarebyts to scan for malwares. Run antivrus, and do SFC/SCANNOW to check for any errors.

It's like it jumps off the page, but it's very irritating (just happened again on "like").

I have found that my Yoga 900 will regularly insert two characters when I have only hit a key once. I might type "stop" (4 keystrokes) but I find the word "stopp" has been entered. This is not a problem with one key, it happens on lots of keys, as shown in the video:The problem with duplicate characters It seems to happen most if you type the key "gently", so the characters you press with pinkies and ring fingers are more likely to exhibit the problem, but the video shows this is happens on any key -- it is not a problem with just certain keys. I am getting a new laptop because of an issue with the Yoga 900 waking from sleep when picked it up:(My problem with the Yoga waking when I pick it up) I'll see if this new issue is a problem on the replacement Yoga. Note that Lenovo has been great, and is sending me a replacement laptop based on the waking problem. I discovered the problem with keyboard bounce while waiting for my new Laptop.Does anyone else see the issue with duplicate characters?

I've had the same issue. It doesn't happen often. Just rarely enough that I thought I might be imagining it!

When I am typing I have text characters turn black or whole lines of text turn black. This happens on all sorts of websites and occasionally within programs themselves. I also have issues where text disappears in Browser tabs.  I have been trying to figure exactly the cause of this, but I am not having any luck. I notice this with both Firefox and Chrome. I am attaching a screen grab for reference and any system update have been completed.   Thank youKevin

Help! My laptop is going crazy! Whenever I click on a text box to type something characters automatically are entered, messing up my words and then they just keep typing themselves. Also the scroll, fn button keeps turning itself on without me touching it.

Obviously, I am not typing this post from that computer - or it would look like this

I have run Norton and updated Norton and it does not detect anything.

Is this a virus? How do I get rid of it??

Thanks in advance to any info anyone can give me.

HP 15-ac122ds Laptop. Certain keys were typing multiple characters. I think my keyboard needed to be replaced, but I figured I would try some trouble shooting suggestions posted in an article by HP. I chose the wrong suggestion to try. Which was my fault, "un-install keyboard drive and restart computer." My computer never restarted! I have a black screen after "restarting" and without the keyboard working, I have no idea how to proceed.  Any work arounds?

When I create a basic table in Ms Powerpoint 2003 with 2 colums/2 rows, some letters are sometimes spaced properly and sometimes not:

For ie, the word "Settlement" in the attached powerpoint document -> The 1st time Settlement is typed, there is no issue
at all. But the 2nd time it is typed, the letter <t> and the letter <l> are squizzed together. Then the 3rd time it is typed, it is fine. Same issue occurs with other words (for ie the word <test> may be fine the 1st time it is typed, then you type it a 2nd time, you get that issue of the letters <s> and <t> squizzed together.

See the attachments (they are the screenshots of the issue)

Troubleshoot:

(x)Changed her MS Windows profile = same issue

(x)Re-installed MS Office 2003 = same issue

(x)Tried in MS WOrd or Excel = it is fine in Word + Excel. So problem is with power point

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?
Thanks
Henry

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

HiJust a little problem, I was trying to send an email message and I wanted to add a letter inside brackets i.e. (a) or (b). When I did this it creates a symbol of a moon or some other symbol. Yes I'm not joking, how can I stop this? Regards

Answer:windows live mail typing characters

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.
Any ideas?

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Answer:Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

I bought this awesome, lovely and exquisite piece of technology innovation in August 2014.I have come to India and everyone loves it.Everything was fine until the last Saturday morning when I was typing an email. I got on a phone call for a while and it went in sleep mode. Pretty normal. I concluded the call and touched the space bar expecting the normal, quick wake up and the login screen. The login screen came up alright, but the password box was already filled. I tried to use backspace to clear the box and I missed a heartbeat! Nothing seemed to happen. So I force shut it holding the power button and after a minute bring it up again. Same scene! This has continued. I am going to be in India for a few months. So I checked with Lenovo service centers calling them. And I learn this model is not supported in India. My warrantee is valid, but of no use!I go to a local dealer, to no avail. I have lost my primary way of communication. Difficult to live this way. Right? SO I buy a toolset (expensive!), open the back cover and disconnect the keyboard cable. I put the cover back and start using it as a tablet only.It is serving me for now, but cant do this for long. What may be wrong? My friend is travelling to the US (San Jose) in a couple of weeks. Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Keyboard continuously floods characters in the keyboard buffer

I have this same problem but with my Y510p. It floods the 'Q' character.

The only solution which seems possible is a keyboard replacement (unless the connecting port is damaged, which is highly unlikely). I have ordered a keyboard and it is on the way.

As for your scenario, I would say that if you friend is going to be in US for more than 2 months then it is fine to send it with him for repairs. You could also order a keyboard online and replace it yourself (I ordered on ebay).
Check your manual on lenovo website for supported keyboard part number.

Tip -
To disable a malfunctioning keyboard like yours, you can either disconnect it physically (like you did)
OR
You can go into Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards
Select the laptop keyboard and manually install a wrong keyboard driver.
This way the keyboard wont be recognized and wont work.

Hi

I've searched for this many times, but this is totally annoying, I have some updates to do, but I have my work laptop fully up to date with SP1.... and still an issue..

So below are the characters that randomly appear ( when typing character left of =), I seem to notice more after pasting, but also does not affect every program when it happens.

?=?
"=?
'=?

I have read it is the keyboard language settings, but that is BS because the settigns are unchanged ( set to US anyways)... I have heard others around my office say it has happened to them.... so whats up? Any one have any news on this?

Answer:certain odd characters randomly appear

Are you absolutely sure your keyboard settings are on US? I remember when I first got my computer it always switched the keyboard setting to "Canadian French" even though "US" was the default. Could this or something similar be happening to you as well?

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

I have a Dell laptop. I can be typing merrily away, when the blinking cursor (which is usually immediately after the last character you've typed) disappears, and I find that what I am typing no longer appears on the screen. It isn't after any particular letter and seems totally random eg  sometimes it happens after 20 words, sometimes after 2 characters. I have to watch the screen the whole time, to see if what I'm typing is making it onto the screen. If not, I left click after the last character on the screen and can carry on emailing, writing a letter etc. It's very annoying. I have no idea what causes it. Can you help, please?

Answer:typing stops (randomly)

I assume that your laptop has a trackpad of some description. Is it possible that you are inadvertently brushing this with your wrists or the base of one of your thumbs while you are typing ?

Just as a suggestion, plug in a mouse and disable / turn off your trackpad and see if the problem continues. I only use a laptop from time to time, but if I am going to do anything intensive on one I always switch the trackpad for a mouse. I too have had some strange things happening on a laptop until I worked out that my normal typing style kept me brushing the thing !

Weird.

Hows your mouse? Alot of moving curser issues are from laser mouses being dirty.

Hi, I've been using Vipre from Sunbelt Software for a year now, it works fine it seems, and MalwareBytes just in case. I also run Kaspersky's TDSS Rootkit remover time to time...here's what's going on with my PC:

It randomly types cccccccccccccccccczzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz22222222222222, and won't stop. I hit "esc" repeatedly and sometimes it works, but as a writer online I can't afford to keep shutting down my PC every time this happens.

I've run all my AV's and they come up clean.

I have the following combofix report after a reader of my blog told me it was a good idea (I ran it about 5 times total now)...uhmmm...THEN I read that that was an idiotic idea (but it was too late for that).

Anyway, I'm not sure what to do or if this is a virus at all.

I've spilled coffee on my laptop (6 mos ago) and it seemed fine...it would type these letters randomly but it's gotten a heck of a lot worse recently, I can't get much done.

Would this appear viral or mechanical?

Just curious. I'm attaching my Combofix file from today, hopefully someone can get back to me soon. Thanks.

If you want to email me, it's James [AT] TheAverageGenius [DOT] net.

I have a Yoda 2 13 that has been OK except for one very annoying trait. When entering text machine intermttenly and randomly highlights text. If Im not very careful and dont notice when it highlights text and then hit another key it will replace everythig highlighted (often everythng you just typed) with that key. Cant tell you how many times I have had to retype a block of text due to this apparent random highlighting. I prefer using a track ball mouse and almost always have one hooked up (not sure if this has anything to do with it). If I remember to turn the trackpad off by pressing key on keyboard it seems to fix random highlighting. Problem is I have to turn trackpad off each and every time I turn machine on. Kind of PITA because I often forget to turn trackpad off until I have lost a bunch of text due to this random highlighting and deleting problem. I never use the trakpad. Is there any way to permenatley disable the trackpad? Is the trackpad the cause behind this apparent random highlighting of text? Am I inadvertently touchingthe trackpad with base of my thumb (palm of hand) thus causing this highlighting? Any thought or ideas on how to get around this? Could it have something to do with motion detection or some other function other than the trackpad?

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 on an HP laptop.

While typing, my text randomly relocates in another sentence. It can happen in Word, Excel, Email, or even in here while I am typing.

In some other forums, they suggested my thumbs might be coming too close to the mouse pad. I have tested this theory many times by concentrating on keeping them up and away. Same problem exists.

My cursor occasionally freezes too.

In frustraton, I downloaded a program called "TouchFreeze" which seems to make everything work (except the freezing cursor). When I run Rkill and Malwarebytes, both programs disable TouchFreeze. Rebooting deactivates it too.

I would love to find the root cause of both problems.

I have already gone through the virus debugging on another BleepingComputer forum. I had a Rootkit virus and a few other problems.

Hello.

Since some weeks, i'm getting a particulary annoying problem with my X300-126 - when i type on my keyboard , the computer sometimes goes quite randomly going into sleep mode after hitting any key on the keyboard (even if it seems to happen more regularly with the space bar , ZQSD and the arrows). Only way to get out of sleep is to push repeately Shift... or a single left-mouse click o_O .

Also , usually after going back from sleep , i have a message telling me that the Desktop Window Manager has crashed .

Anyone having an idea on my problem ?

Thanks.

I use this R850 because it was supplied by work.
I have found it almost as frustrating as the HP I had at my previous job.... and it is for the same reasons!!

- The cursor moves randomly, so when touch typing I find I am typing in completely the wrong place.
- It randomly deletes chunks of my work - particularly frustrating on a web page where there is no 'undo' button.
- When using functions like drag in Publisher, or highlighting text, the touch pad is not always co-operative.
- Some random letters/spaces etc don't happen despite applying appropriate pressure.

Quite frankly, it takes too long to do things and I want to throw it off a dam into a deep lake.

No liquids have been spilled on it.
No crumbs are in the keyboard.
This seems to be a defective product like the "HP Elitebook" I had last year!!

If you use external mouse disable touch pad and something like this will not happen.

Hello all,
Basically, this went on with my last computer that I had as well, so I'm wondering if its a program I downloaded or a website I visited. Anyway, it happens rarely but it is a nuisance that I want to get rid of nonetheless. So basically what happens is it just randomly starts clicking for me. I control the cursor, but I will move the cursor and then it will click when I didn't click at all. What ensues is highlighting that I didn't want to highlight, or clicking things I didn't want to click, including the back button on the web. It will make the web page go back or forward when I didn't do either. Then it will also type in any type able box something that I had typed before. I wonder if this is spyware of some sort. I don't think it is a key logger because I have visited a few important sites and none of my records are in trouble or abnormal.

It's one of those days. Neighbour's daughter has Dell laptop W7. Mose keys work normally, but Shift produces a forward slash. Return returns, but inputs a Hash as well. > produces nothing.I've checked regional and Language, there is only the standard English UK keyboard.I guess one of the kids at school has done something, but I'm baffled!

Answer:Keyboard - strange characters

Without wishing to sound alarmist, has she spilt any liquids on her keyboard? My daughter did the same with her Acer and had exactly the same key input problems with very similar results as to what you are seeing when the keys are pressed. My daughter's laptop is away for repair at the moment, but it looks as if she will need a new keypad as a result of her spilling her tea (milk+2sugar)s. There are threads on here with some good advice, but I wasn't articulate enough to warrant any dismantling or cleaning.Aitch

[I'm new here, if I've posted this in the wrong forum, I'm sorry!]Somehow, my keyboard (a Gateway FX laptop, American layout, Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, 32-bit), whenever I type ", ', `, ~ or ^ and a vowel, it comes out with a letter with an accent, such as '+a=? or ^+u=?.  It suddenly started doing this, out of the blue.  My questions are:1) Is it possible to switch off/on this setup?2) Is it possible to add new characters to be inserted when a letter combination is typed?Thank you.

Hi, this is my first post to this forum. I am The Excel Addict. I have a website http://www.TheExcelAddict.com where I share tips and tricks for using Microsoft Excel. But sometimes, outside of Excel I need to go looking for HELP.For the past couple of months my computer has been acting strange. When I am typing away, it can happen in any program (Outlook, Excel, Word, TextPad, etc...), everything is working fine, but then my keyboard starts producing odd characters. For example, when I try to type a " (double quote), I get a blank, when I type a greater than sign (>) I get an apostrophe (') and most other non-alphanumeric characters result in the same behavior. If I close the program and reopen it, everything works OK for a while (maybe 10-15 minutes) and then the strange characters start appearing again when I type. I restart the program, and everything will work fine for another little while. It is very difficult to get anything done on my computer that requires typing. Updating my website is a nightmare. So far I've resisted smashing my computer to bits. Has any one else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?I am using WinXP Professional and have McAffe antivirus running. The Excel Addict

I have a B50-30 and sometimes it doesn't acknowledge keystrokes from my USB keyboard.

I have used the keyboard with a laptop and tried a different keyboard with the desktop. the problem is only evident on the desktop regardless of us keyboard (i am using the onscreen keyboard to type this).

The USB board will work for a while and then start missing characters, typically vowels (!). I have checked the ease of access options and everything is turned off including filter keys.

It is particularly bad at the moment, but might work for days at a time.

Hi

My keyboard now displays @ when I press shift/double quotes and the opposite when I press shift/at sign.

Where do I go to check what keyboard options have been set up during the upgrade.

Thanks

Daniel

No problem, I have found it.

Click on the Language bar and the options of Language and keyboard come up, they had been changed.

Cheers

Daniel
