Screen Stays in Standby: Hardware died?

Question: Screen Stays in Standby: Hardware died?

Hey guys, trying to track down an issue on my gaming PC. I tapped the keyboard to take the computer out of sleep mode, and when it powered up the screen stayed in standby. I held the power switch down until it shut off, and upon releasing it powered back on instantly. I flipped the power off on the power supply, and let it sit for a minute or so before trying to turn it back on, and once pressing the power button, the fans start, proc fan, power supply fan, video card fan are all running, however I have seemingly no drive activity, or ANY video signal. No bios post, nothing.

I hate the idea of throwing money at something without some kind of educated assumption, or diagnostics. One of our family PC's did something similar recently that ended up being a crap power supply, but again.... I have no reason to assume that's all it is.

All of my system specs are up to date on my profile and the basics are below:

CPU: AMD FX 8120 -8 Core Black Edition
MB: AsRock 970DE3/U3S3 ATX
Ram: 8GB Crucial 1600
Video: Gigabyte Nvidia 650TI
PSU: 600Watt OCZ Stealth xStream

Preferred Solution: Screen Stays in Standby: Hardware died?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Screen Stays in Standby: Hardware died?

Hi metal monkey..

It would seem like your problem could be a bad and/or loose connecter/cable or it could be your motherboard or video card. Another possibility is ram.

First check all connections and ensure they are tight and secure. Remove any extra HD's you have connected other than the one you need to boot from.

What I would do is remove all ram besides one stick, place it in position one and see if it boots. If not, try another stick, etc etc. (If you have a stick of ram you know works, try it as well)

Try reseating your video card. If that doesn't work, use onboard video card (if you have one, i semi looked it up and maybe you don't have onboard video card?)

If none of those work, try to find a known good powersupply, although I doubt this is your problem unless its simply not getting enough power. If it powers most of the mobo, its usually fine.

If all this fails, try a known good Video card. If that doesn't work, I'd say you need a new mobo.

[email protected], this is my second Yoga, bought in August 2017, the problem started round about 1-2 month ago. After awaking my notebook out of the standby the second screen sometimes stays blackplugging the USB-C Jack (Connected by displayport to the DELL Screen) in and out does not help. The external DELL screen only says "there is no signal".So far the only way to get it back is a full restart :-(Regarding to google search that issue shows up an quite a variety of notebooks (manufactures and graphic units), lots of threads in  different forums, but nothing that solved my problem. Trying following work around another problem shows up:Now I did changes in the energy management to stop the machine going into standby that fast. But the machine ignores my setting:* Shut down the Screen after 1 hours when connected to power* Go into Standy after 4 hours when connected to powerThis setting is saved, but the machine goes into standby much quicker?! Hopefully someone can help here - Cheers Dennis P.S. I also changed tried it with a new cable, same problem.

PC has been working fine for years but suddenly last night it froze, I was just using Photoshop and when I reset the monitor would stay at standby and the HDD light would stay on.
I cleared out a little bit of dust on the motherboard, took the mobo battery out and put it back in, made sure everything was plugged in and everything seemed normal but the problem remains.
I'm guessing the motherboard has kicked the bucket but not sure.
Thanks in advance to anyone able to offer advice.

Answer:HDD Light stays on and PC monitor stays on standby

well, the symptoms imply that the computer isn't passing POST. so that makes the most likely culprits the memory, cpu and motherboard. check that the memory is seated properly, the cpu heatsink is mounted properly and the fan is connected and then you can start thinking about blaming the board. if you have spare memory and/or a spare cpu they might come in handy to rule things out.

edit: it could also be the graphics card but it's less likely. if you don't have access to another computer/graphics card, try taking the current one out and seeing if the HDD light still stays on while trying to boot without it. now i'm presuming you have a basic knowledge of ESD and handling computer parts.

Hi there,I tried to switch on our PC yesterday, only to find that the TFT monitor won't come out of it's standby mode, and says "no signal".Otherwise, the PC seems to be operating as normal, and I can (blindly) sign in to the PC, and it makes all the usual noises. From a bit of browsing on my mobile, I can see that it may be something like the graphics card, motherboard, RAM etc, but I have no idea where to start in narrowing these down.My OH did take the cover off last night and hoovered out the dust, then reseated the graphics card, but nada. Can anyone help us to find out what to do next??Oh, and we have tried the monitor on FILs machine, and it worked fine, so we know it isn't that. Many thanksSuzie

Answer:Monitor stays in standby - help please!!

The most likely problem is that your graphics card has died, and the only way to find out for certain is by trying another card.

So just today, i went on a game and was about to connect to a server and my computer froze. I thought it would be just a regular freeze up and held the power button in to shut my computer down. I did and started to turn it back on execpt my monitor stayed on standby. My computer was on, and the monitor was just black and blank. So i assumed it was a monitor problem but i switched monitors and the same problem. I took my Nvidia GeForce 5600XT out and put it back in securely to see if that solved it, but it didnt. Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated, Thank you.

Answer:Monitor stays on standby

Defective video graphics adapter, or defective power supply rail for the video graphics adapter. The 5600XT is historically failure prone, so try it in another computer, and try a friend's video graphics adapter in your computer.

Also, failed video graphics driver, failed video adapter socket, bad cooling fan on adapter, or failed cpu fan or related component.

What's the internal USB for? Well if you are running a device that is USB and mounted in the computer you can connect it to theUSB 2.0. Or what you can do is purchase a thumb drive say 1 Gb or actually any size and plug it into this port like I done and have an extra drive for storage. Just plug and pray and you are all set.

As for the stand-by I would go into power options in control panel and turn-off all the pwer options like hibernation etc except for stand-by and reboot the computer for changes to take affect and see what happens this way. Write down what you do and where it will help if you want to reverse the settings.

Firstly - I am the type of person you done leave alone around a pc, with nothing to do...
I have a IBM P3, running Windows 98. When I got the pc, the monitor use to go on standby every 5 minutes or so and my keyboard got stuck, fans stopped worked, etc.
I entered BIOS and changed some settings and everything seemed to work fine.
I then wanted to use my flash disk, but the pc did not recognise it. I read a couple of forums, trying to figure out what to do, re-set the jumpers (all of them, each jumper I could find). I ended up stripped the entire pc!!! Told you not to leave me alone...
When I connected everything again, the pc booted fine and went through the "found new hardware" section. But then it could not pick up the monitor - it kept on telling me to check the display adapter...and all of a sudden the monitor got stuck on standby each time I put the power on.
I tested the monitor on my other pc (unfortunately it runs on Windows xp prof) and it works fine, I tested the hard drive, it works, the graphics and sound cards work on my other pc.
Please help!!! Another thing is that the IBM fans go on, but it doesn't sound like the floppy drive does anything - no noise, etc...
I even replaced the CMOS battery...

Answer:Monitor stays on standby

sounds like a bad PSU to me.

i recently built a pc and bought all the parts which were pretty expensive and broke my bank for the time being, i built my pc and got everything working properly including drivers installed etc+.
The other day i bought xp pro and got to the piont where i was installing it, then setup had fished the first part of formatting my 320GB drive, and after all that was done it required me to restart my pc. It restrarted and just after thr bios beep i pressed the power button because i was going to be late for work, and switched my pc off and left it.
When i got back about 6 hours later i booted up my pc and it powered on fine, but the monitor just stayed in standby and there was no bios beep. Please note my pc case is brand new and all the parts are shiny and new and have no dust.
i have tried the following-
-checked all conections
-tested RAM
-tested graphics card
-tried different monitors
-tested psu
i have a seriously bad feeling it is the motherboard which is the worst possible part that could possibly fail, thing is though how could it die without me doing anything to it????????????????????
i bought the motherboard about 3 months ago and the gaurentee has run out.

any help or advice most appriciated

If a motherboard is going to fail, it will fail most often right out of the box, or a few weeks out. You have tested everything else. Have you tried using the on-board video?

I have a Gateway desktop with windows XP. When I turn on the pc the monitor goes right into standby before I can see anything. The pc seems to be booting up just like it used to I can hear the fan and even the disc drives if I put a disc in. First I was told it might be the power supply, replaced that still the same thing. Then I was told it might be the video card replaced that and still no change. Oh and the monitor works just fine unhooked it from the pc and got the no signal thing then hooked it up to my laptop and it worked just fine. Any clue what the problem could be??

Answer:Monitor stays in standby at boot

You have replaced the PSU and Video card. That leaves the CPU (possible it's bad but statistically at the bottom of the list), RAM and MB. If you have 2 sticks of RAM you can try one at a time. You can look over the MB to see if anything looks bad like a bulging capacitor, but really all you can do with the MB and CPU would be to replace them or try them in another system.

Also worth disconnecting all drives and add in cards (except the vid card). Sometimes a bad HD or addin card can do this.

her laptop is not on stand by, it is in hibernate, it shuts down non essential systems and goes into a state of hibernation, since she is still using the wireless connection, this is not shut down and thusly is still connected

After closing the lid, my G550 enters standby mode (power light is flashing slowly), and when I open the lid after a short time, the G550 resumes correctly (i.e., immediately). But if I leave the G550 in standby for a longer period, the power light stops flashing, at which point opening the lid does not restart the G550 -- and it's necessary to press the power button.   At all times the G550 is on AC power, even when off. I haven't measured the time it takes for the power light to stop flashing, but a guess is less than a few hours.  Is there a way to keep the G550 in standby mode for a longer time -- preferably indefinitely -- as long as AC power is supplied?

Go to Solution.

Answer:G550 stays in standby but only for a short time

Sounds like it is entering hibernation. You can set how long to enter hibernation afterstandby, or disable it. Method differs with xp or vista or win 7.

I have a problem which is driving me crazy!!

My friend has just bought a new LG L1730S monitor, after a couple of weeks of everything working fine, it has started to stay in standby mode. If you leave it for 10 minutes, then try rebooting it works!

I've checked the monitor on another system and it works fine, the graphics card an old Geforce 2 MX works as i've tried that in another computer.

I'm unable to open the computer in safe mode until the monitor snaps itself out of it's sleep, so I don't think it's a resolution setting.

I've read a number of threads about this problem but none seem to have an answer to it really. Is it worth removing the CMOS battery to reset factory settings on the motherboard. I'm a bit reluctant to try this as I've never had to do it before! Is it difficult?

Answer:Monitor stays in sleep/standby mode

Not too difficult Unplug your PC and on the board look for probably like a large watch battery...there will be a clip to release it...that's about it.
Have you checked in the settings in control panel/Power Management

I have a R30208DY Desktop PC running Windows 10 in 64 bit mode with a VGA monitor and an HDMI monitor connected to the motherboard. All was fine until my Intel Graphics driver was updated. After this the VGA monitor failed to wake up after sleep. I spent some time several months ago with assistance of the Intel support forum investigating this. It happens even if I run with the HDMI monitor disconnected. I tried numerous versions of the Intel drivers, but the only version that works after 4300 is 4424. I decided to try periodically to see whether newly released drivers have solved the problem, so have just downloaded the latest drivers from the Intel site and from the Lenovo site and found that they still have this problem. I can reinstate the 4424 driver if it gets inadvertantly updated, but would like to think that someone at Intel recognises that there is a problem and is looking to provide a new version that repairs it. Is there any feedback to Intel from this support forum to initiate this process?

i'm building a computer, i've built a few in the past but i am having trouble with this one. The first time I put it together the power flickered for a split second then the power cut off. I troubleshooted my **** off, everything was connected properly, still nothing. So i thought it was my mobo, i called intel got an rma number and i got my mobo swaped. i recieved it a few days ago, i installed it and it powered up for a min then shut off, if i turned the power switch on the back of the psu off then on it would do the same thing, So as most people would think i thought it would be the psu so today i went out to bestbuy and bought the antec 430 watt truepower psu. so now i have another new mobo the same D915gevl, and i have the new power supply,ok.
So I install the power supply and whamo I have power i hear the drive spinning the 3 fans running with the blue leds goin no problem there, but my monitor wont come out of standby, my mouse and keyboard wont turn on, and my cd-rom wont power up, once again everything is connected properly, i even unplugged everything but the cpu/ram/mobo just the bare things needed to be ran, still nothing,... Answer:The ever so popular monitor stays in standby question

First question you say it will not come out of standby... please elaborate.

i am assuming you mean when you power the box on you get no display and an amber light on your monitor power indicator.

I would suggest you try another processor. if you have replace the motherboard, PSU, the only other possibilities would be the processor, memory, or the video card of course.

Hello guys!

As discribed in subject, the display backlight stays always off when my z830 PT225E comes back from standby. It is only backlight, because I can see the picture dimly if I hold the screen against a light. Also using FN+F7 doesn't change anything on this state. Only thing which works is to reboot.

Is there any update of display driver? Or is there any workarround to get back display backlight?
By the way, bios is up to date with version v1.60.

Thanks for response!

If yes, have you removed any Toshiba utilities from Control Panel?

Hello folks. This is my first post so greetings to everyone!

I have read multiple posts on the forum regarding the issue, and followed every possible solutions i could find but am still unable to solve the problem, even though some people are having the exact same problem with even the exact same graphics card. I am getting desperate to find a solution, and I therefore hope some of you guys out there have had a similar problem or know what could be wrong.

The problem started after playing Diablo 3 for some time, my monitor suddenly turned off, however the computer stayed on. The sound scratters for a second and then goes off, and I am unable to use the keyboard (Numlock/Capslock does not work). However, i recently discovered that I am unable to see my computer on my network through my laptop, and even copy files from it. To start with the crashes only occured rarely and after playing for hours, however the crashes now occured 10 minutes after start and they even started occuring playing other games like WoW and The Sims 3. My first thought was overheat, as CPU was getting temperatures above 80 degrees when playing. I opened the case and saw that the CPU-cooler stopped and started spinnning again every 3-seconds or so, so I bought a new CPU-cooler, and it does spin correct now. However, the crashes still occured, even though my CPU temperature was now at 50 degrees when idle.

My second thought was then the GPU, as it was also getting semi-high temperatures at 80+ de... Read more

Ok guys one day I got home and I tried turning on my pc, it started normally, usual sounds like the fans running ect. (no beep thought) and it sounds like it is booting all the way, but my monitor stays in standby mode saying "No signal". so I tried logging in (with my screen off, by pressing down on the keyboard arrows and typing my password followed by pressing enter, and I could hear windows logging in (the windows log in tune/sound)

Now I tested the monitor on another pc, it works fine. I bought a new graphics card and that didn't make a difference (The old card was a nvidia gforce 8600 gt, and my new card is an Asus ENGTX460 TOP direct Cu)
I tried taking out Ram and switching slots (2 sticks of 1 gig ram)
still didn't work, so confusing.

I have a P5N-e sli asus motherboard with an intel core2duo 2.8ghz prossessor, 2 sata hard drives and no on board display.

P.S. please go easy I'm not an expert at fixing things.

Answer:Asus P5N-E SLI, no beep, no post and monitor stays in standby

Unlike your old card, the 8600GT, the GTX 460 requires two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors from the PSU (power supply unit). Did you connect them? Does your PSU even have two 6 pin PCI-E connectors?

I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my Satellite M100 series.

Everything works fine but when the pc is forced into sleep/standby or it automatically goes into sleep/standby mode according to the idle time set in the Power settings it cannot be revived from sleep/standby mode without switching off and restarting.

The blue button becomes orange and flashes, indicating sleep/standby mode. When you press it again, it turns to blue and fan switches on. But there is no display and no response. The only option is to switch off and on.

So I was working on big project and my computer becomes extremely slow. I was typing at around 50 words per minute and the computer was showing words up at about 1 letter a minute. So I restarted the computer.
Now after I restart the computer, its stuck at hardware monitor... I restarted it 3-4 times, still the same, took out parts of the computer, put it back, still the same (probably due to mobo). The computer has its normal beep and goes from the hardware monitor's last monitored thing to a new blank line (suggesting that its going to keep running), but then just becomes stuck.

What do I do?

Answer:Computer on Startup stays at Hardware Monitor

I assume by "hardware monitor" you mean the BIOS POST (Power On Self Test)?

Also, exactly what parts did you remove and try to boot up without?

And what are you computer's specs?

Tried turning it back on and nothing. Took out the battery and tried turning it on with the power cord plugged in and nothing except a small sound coming from what seemed like the RAM or Processor. This only occurred with no battery and the power cord.

Is my motherboard shot? Is there anyway to easily identify the problem? Has this happened to anyone before?

Thanks in advance

Ok, my computer died, the motherboard ( Gateway). Its sad that it happened, but now i can finally get away from stock computer since now i have a reason to replace some stuff. I need a new case, motherboard, and PSU. So which ones do you recommend? If its at Newegg...all the better, but send me any. Well the mobo should be under $120. and the PSU should be about 300W. For a case...around $50 would be nice.

Answer:Comp. died, need new hardware

You can get a decent system for around $350.00 without the monitor and printer, but for the price you can get everything together for under $400.00 if needing something immediate.

Looking at TigerDirect, You can get a Barebones for around $250.00 with at least a 2.xghz processor. The big question is what are you going to be using it for (gaming, Internet browsing).

I am aware that this problem is not unique, and read dozens of posts on this forum, on Microsoft forums, and on the web before posting this.

This is a new Windows 7 Pro SP1 installation of two weeks ago, and am unable to shut down completely. At installation it worked fine and then one of the Microsoft updates messed it up and don't know how to correct it. Have been working on this problem for the past ten days, on and off but without success, so I am posting this with all the pertinent info.

What is happening is that at shutdown, the fan (only one is installed), the shut down button, and the USB hub & ports remain alive. The PSU is off.

This is definitely a Windows 7 problem because I also use Linux Xubuntu 14.04 and this shuts down without problems.

Starting with the motherboard BIOS, all settings are at default, with the exception of disabling the 3.5 floppy drive, and the boot on logo. Please see the three uploaded images for the BIOS default power settings.

1. Set Windows power options to 'balanced' default but disabled computer sleep and monitor shutdown.
2. Unchecked all power management settings in device manager. This includes all (11) HID compliant devices, IEEE 1394 Bus Host controller, (DWA-130 USB Wifi dongle) Wireless Microsoft 800 Keyboard, Logitech Mouse, and all (7) USB Root Hubs.

One thing, the fan can't be going if the PSU is off. Your PSU is still going if your fan is going. == If you think it is a Windows 7 problem, shut down the PC and boot again. Hold down the F8 key and that should bring you to a menu, "Last known good configuration". Select that and see if it helps. == Also you can try to stop everything running in the background. Bear with me, this is a bit hard to explain and baffled even my most tech inclined friend. A few weeks ago, we had a power outage, and my machine cut off. The computer itself came back fine, the fan was working, etc, but the monitor was stuck in "Standby" with the orange light on. The only other thing not working was my USB mouse. I tried unplugging, etc, and nothing helped. I tried switching out monitors with no luck, I tried using a PS/2 mouse with no change. When I unplugged the monitor, it came back on and said "Video cable unplugged" it only did he standby thing when plugged into the computer tower. I took the battery out of the computer and let it sit for a while, put it back in, and the computer came back on in an hour or so. I'd been using that method for the past two weeks, but last night it went back off with NO prompting. No storm, no electricity flicker, nothing, and it hasn't come back on. ANY ideas?

Answer:Computer randomly shuts off and stays in "Standby" mode

Sounds as if the video has been stressed by the power surge, this can happen months after a system has been hit by an outage.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

If I simply swap out the MB's are boot off the Hard drive with WSE be able to adapt to the new hardware? Can I at least recover the CD Key because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Is maybe some USB device connected to the unit (USB memory stick)? I have noticed the same with my older Tecra M1 and new Qosmio G20. If the USB memory stick is connected the unit needs very long time to hibernate and also about 10 min to wake up.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 that is out of warranty. I bought it in 2013.  With that out o' the way, my Lenovo Yoga 13's screen stays black even when the power is on...I see no Lenovo logo or anything AND the laptop keeps restarting on its own, so it is stuck in restart mode, with the screen staying black the whole time.  This laptop has been doing this (black screen even though power is on and shuts off and restarts on its own) for about 6 months now....(Jan 2017-June 3, 2017 as of this writing). This laptop works WHEN IT WANTS TO EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT NOT OFTEN.  I turned the laptop on now, and I'm typing on it now, **BUT when it doesn't work, which is most of the time**, it shows a black screen (I see nothing on the screen) even with the power on and constantly restarts on its own. Is this hardware issue a motherboard problem or a screen issue specifically? Specifically, is it the motherboard that needs to be fixed on this Yoga 13 or is it a screen issue? If it's a motherboard issue that needs to be fixed, how much would it cost? Or If it's a screen issue, how much would that cost to fix? Any help on this is much needed!

Answer:**Yoga 13: Laptop screen stays black when power is ON, & fan makes noise, but nothing on screen**

Hello Complex1Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.
Sounds like this will be an issue with the HDD or MOBO instead of the Display I believe.
Try running an LSC scan, it may be able to detect a hardware issue on the unit.
1. Please click on the following link2. Under the section ?Download? select the relevant Hyperlink dependant on whether your Lenovo is running Windows 7/8/8.1 32 bit or 64 bit. 3. When prompted, select save and browse to a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files. 4. Navigate to the folder where you saved the installation file, lscsetup_x86_26001.exe. 5. Double-click the installation file icon to start the installation. 6. Follow the onscreen instructions via the installation wizard that will install Lenovo Solution Centre on your system. 7. Once installed you will have a ?Lenovo Solution Centre? icon on your desktop please click to open this. 8. Once solution center is opened please select ?Checkup? then ?Hardware Scan? and ?Full Scan? 9. This will take up to 20 minutes, see if this can find any errors.

Basically, I open my laptop, the screen on it does not work (with or without extended monitor plugged in), and won't turn on at all. When I go to my device display settings, my extended monitor works but when I click the project button to switch screens, my 'PC Screen Only' is being shown as my extended monitor. I can't figure out what happened to my laptop screen. am looking at getting it replaced, would it be worth it, and does it boil down to a screen/panel only issue? Thanks

Hello everybody, today my laptop has become blind. Let me explain:

My laptop was purchased in 2007
Alienware m9750
Dual nvidia 7950 go
Dual core 2.0
2 gigs of ram
80 gb harddrive

So here's what happened, today I was watch s movie on netflix when suddenly my screen goes black. Though I had crashed but my laptop was still on and the sound was still going. restarted, and the initial screen was slightly pixellated and garbled. Which has now made my laptop permanent garbled and pixely. After the windows logo. My screen goes black, but I am still hear the windows start up sound. I found that I am able to click on some music files on my desktop that are able to play, so this is a video issue. I reboot in safe mode which works this time figure to disable and uninstall the videocard drivers. I restart and I'm able to use my pc somewhat normally( still garbled). Reinstalled the nvidia drivers then halfway through says: error install failed or something, it happen really fast then crashed, tried restarting atleast 20 times in safe mode but it freezes up after it tries to load partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

All of the other options for start up(even last settings to work) the screen goes black after the windows logo. I have tried tinkering with the bios but it doesn't help. Its basically being blind using a computer. So I'm wondering if there is anyway to possibly blindly open up command prompt and possibly disable or uninstall the drivers from there, I'm ab... Whenever my laptop wakes up from sleep and shows the lock screen, I click and type in my PIN as normal. But on the lock screen at the top right, there's a Cortana box usually giving an example of what I can do, like 'tap and say remind me to water the plants when I get home'.

The problem is this box stays on the screen after the computer is unlocked, and displays semi-transparently in the top left over all other windows, with the only way to remove it is to double click, have a Cortana window display full screen and then close it.

I'd like to find a way of either fixing this or disabling Cortana from the lock screen altogether as I never use this feature. Any tips would be appreciated.

Since a few days i have a strange issue with my T400 (running with Vista Business). usually i close my display and the system goes in standby mode. after opening it again the t400 should come back to the login screen. but now i often have the strange error that the notebooks tries to come back but after 3 seconds it fell again to sleep with the following error code: beep, three short beeps, three short beeps, one beep  - > Memory problem: bad DIMM or bad DIMM slot then i have to press the power button and the t400 boots back from suspend mode? however this works  what i did to solve it?- changed both RAM moduls- deinstalled power manager & power manager driver- changed the battery nothing helped. does anyone has the same error already? maybe it it really a bad DIMM slot? i cant believe it because my vista is really stable when im working - i do never  had bluescreens (except the ATI driver issue). Moderator note: title corrected to from T404 to T400.Message Edited by Agotthelf on 23-03-2009 09:36 AM

I've been experiencing an issue on my T61 (8889-26U) on and off since I received the machine over a year ago. Originally, with the load that came on the machine (Windows XP Professional image), I started to see issues where, after a restart or standby, any of the following devices may not be responsive: The KeyboardThe Mouse/TrackPoint DeviceThe Audio System Normally, when I review this issue and I can interact with the system (usually this is when only the Audio isn't working), I find that the audio device is either not present as a device (like it is just missing from the system in the Device Manager) or it has an error state. If the error state is present, I can disable and re-enable the device and it works properly. If the device isn't present, I must reboot the computer (possibly up to about 3-4 times to get all of the devices to work together). I reinstalled Windows XP Professional using an SP3 installation (that I created with nLite) and didn't see the problems anymore for quite a while (approximately 7 months). Since that time, my computer has been reinstalled numerous times and I had no issues up until about a month ago (which was not in proximity to a reinstallation). The problem resurfaced again in the exact same way. I took a second hard drive and used it to install a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional. I was not able to duplicate the issue. This seems to suggest that something within my load may be the issue, but I'm having a problem identifying... Read more

I've searched, perhaps with the wrong keywords...

whenever I use the "Safely remove hardware" under Vista prior to removing a usb key, the light on the key still remains on... which doesn't happen under XP.

Has the behaviour changed under Vista and this is now normal, or is it a bug?

Answer:After doing "Safely remove hardware" in Vista: usb key light stays on

This is normal, as far as I can tell in Vista. I use 4 USB keys on 3 different Vista systems, and the same thing happens each time.

I have had a recurring problem for months on my HP desktop. Often when I walk away from my computer (and occasionally while i'm sitting there using the darn thing!), I'll come back a while later and my monitor will have gone black and does not come back when I move my mouse or anything else i've tried. I end up having to shut down using the button on my CPU in order to restart and get my screen image back. Is this a Vista problem, a hardware (video card?) problem or an old-duffer-with-his-head-where-the-sun-don't-shine problem? Is there an easy way to prevent this and/or an easy way to get my screen image back without shutting down the whole kit and kaboodle? thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Screen goes/stays blank

I think this is Vista, though it may just be for laptops. Anyway try looking at "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Change when the compuer sleeps." Incidentally will a wake up button on your keyboard do anything in this situation?

I'm using a D975XBX Intel Main Board, 2 GB of DDR2 Ram, A 512MB ATI Radeon. The last thing I was doing was making some AVI to VOB conversions and the computer slowed down EXTREMELY then turned off. Now everytime I turn it on and let it try to load windows it stays on a black screen for hours. It won't even load the OS. I tried reformating, but it won't even detect the windows CD in the DVD drive. You know that screen that goes "Press any key to run the setup"... Nope no such screen. I tried to use a Nuke disk but it won't run a floppy either. I set the bios to run DVD ROM and Floppy as primary, yet it seems to skip these steps and jumps straight into the black screen. At first I thought it might have been my LCD. Maybe the computer was running a setup that can only be viewed in 800x600... But when i switched to a regular CRT monitor, still, the infamous black screen... What could it be??

Answer:Screen stays black....

When you try to boot up, do you see anything at all? Or is it a black screen the entire time?

If you don't see anything it may be a video card problem. If you have another card, try swapping it out. But usually, if it's a bad card, you'll hear a series of beeps when you turn on the PC>

Hi there. Recently upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have been experimenting with changing the Lock Screen. I know how to change it manually. The point is, I put the setting to 'Play slide show'. I even told the system to use a picture folder. Maybe I am misunderstanding. I was expecting the lock screen to be different each time. But no change. I even installed Lock Pic. But I noticed it's working with the actual windows settings. It just gives me a different choice of pictures. So what am I doing wrong?

Answer:Lock Screen stays the same.

Hello gallicbear,

In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens. One is set by the user that is displayed only when they are signed in. The other is the default Lock screen image that is displayed when there are no users signed in.

The lock screen slide show only works on your lock screen when you are still signed in, and not the default one.

So when I restarted my computer, everything was fine until I got to the loading screen (screen with the windows logo and the loading blue bar). I've waited for the longest time ever but the blue bar would keep moving while windows doesnt even bother to load up.
I've tried running Windows in safe mode but its still stuck at the loading screen.

Answer:XP stays on loading screen

Hi, The usual advice is to choose the "Last Known Good Configuration" to boot to, when you try to start up, use the F8 key to get to the Advanced startup menu (in the list where you would usually pick Safe MOde) and select that line with your up/down arrow key, and press Enter. If that does not work, you should have System Restore to try. Sounds like neither is going to work for you, but you can try.

Just shutting everything down will sometimes help, if you leave it off and unplugged for 10 minutes or so, I mean the main power cord so no power is available to the motherboard or power supply.

Sometimes, just restarting a few times will help. Could be you picked some malware up, too, and restarting then can make it worse. So, you are at some risk and should try to rescue any really important files if there are any. When things go bad, there can be as few as one or two good starts to Safe Mode or normal before you are really crashed and can't do any backing up data.....

Is everything plugged in OK, what I mean is, did you perhaps shut down and move any cables or plugs or open the case to look at something?

Let us know if anything you try works or not.

And> Do you have the install disks for the computer handy in case you need to use them?

Running a chkdsk from the Recovery Console is one thing you can try after you try the above.
You need the XP installation CD, or one provided with the computer like the Dell or other manufacturer CD with XP on it. (U... Read more

Question: screen stays white

Can anyone please tell me why my laptop screen turns white and stays that way when i start up?

Answer:screen stays white

Hi steveicw

Just guessing here but it sounds like the LCD screen isn't working. Basically you are getting the backlight on with nothing in front to change the display. Is there anywhere on the laptop that you can plug in a external monitor and see if the system is booting? I had one laptop like this where the external display worked fine but the screen was all white. Replacing the display fixed the problem. Laptops are expensive and hard to fix. You may need to take it to a repair shop. BOL

well, I think some files are lost after I improperly shut down the laptop by hold down the power button. So when I start up computer, it stays at Window XP welcome screen, the bar keeps moving continuously, but it goes nowhere. It's a Toshiba Satellite and it comes with a recovery disc, but after it finish loading the disc, nothing happens but black screen and a mouse pointer. I also tried to reinstall everything from that recovery disc but can't...(also tried to hold down C key when laptop is powering up to reformat). When I try to go to safe mode, it shows blue screen then restart again after it stops loading the file. so.... anyone got any other ideas? .. it always stays at the welcome screen.. .. so i can't even login..

Question: Screen Stays Blank

I recieved 1024MBs of DDR2 ram I ordered from Tigerdirect today. I unplugged everything from my computer and opened it up. My computer was running on 2 sticks of 256mb and 1 stick of 512mb DDR ram. When i took them out i saw this but figured I would try a 512mb DDR2 stick and see if I could at least use that before my new motherboard arrived. I removed all the DDR ram I had and put in 1 stick of 512mb DDR2 ram. i plugged the computer back to everything and tried to boot it up. The monitor remained black.

I unplugged everything from the computer again and removed the DDR ram. I put the old ram back in and tried to boot with the computer just connected to the monitor. Both the computer and the monitor have power and both have lights turning on. When I try to boot the computer the screen remains blank still, even with the old ram in the computer.

At this point i thought one of the ram sticks might be bad so I took 2 sticks out and tried to boot. No change. I put a different stick in and took the first stick of ram out and tried booting. Nothing on the screen. I tried the last stick and nothing changed. I've tried the last stick of ram in all 3 ram slots my MB has and nothing shows up on screen.

hello, this is ecobill. i am new in the neighborhood. I know a little about computers (enough to be dangerous); so, I need help once in while. Whenever I have trouble it is never the normal problems.
Because I lost the printer drivers and USB drivers on my present computer when I updated to XP Service pack 2 and I have been able to install them from any locaton.

I have received a used, but more updated computer. I was told it worked, but there was no rack for the hard drives that matched the screw holes. I adapted an old rack and when I turn on the power with the monitor attached, there is nothing but a black screen. The power supply appears Ok, because some of the lights come on; the hard drive is running; and the fans come on the motherboard and video card. The monitor is OK because I used it on another older computer. Also when I just unplug the monitor from the video card, the screen comes on. I tried another older video card in one of the shorter card slots, but it did work either.
Any ideas out there? Thanks

Answer:Monitor Screen stays black

Monitor stays black

I don't know how to reset the cmos unless you mean to pull the battery. I don't know about the BIOS bus for the video (I can't see any BIOS) settings. I removed the original AGP video card that I thought might be a problem and I put an older working video card (Trident) in another PCI slot and this made no difference. I pulled the RAM chips to clean the connections and reset all cables. I disconnected the CD drive, the floppy drive, and later the hard drive after checking each situation indiviudally, but this made no difference.

Another problem (may be related) is the on-off switch does not control anything. I have to use the toggle switch in the back. I checked the wire connection from the switch to the motherboard (Intel D845BG) and it looked OK.

I unfortunately have no other DDR2 ram, PCIE cards or a motherboard that TAKES PCIE >.< So I can't test any of the components on their own, plus the motherboard has no on-board graphics.

I've had a look at the POST guide, and nothing from there appears to work. I've also tried disconnecting everything except the ram, graphs card and CPU, but again no change. Could it be that my Ram is faulty/incompatable? Fauly Graphics card? I know my CPU works because I've tried it in another computer, and it runs fine.

Any help would be appreciated. (It might take me a while to reply, sorry if that's the case.)

Answer:All fans come on, but screen stays black.

HDD seems to be active, and the drive reads the disk. I tried clearing the CMOS, no luck. Sorry, RMA?

Also, I have a 20 to 24 pin extention on my PSU, would that effect it?

the pc boots but the power light doesn't come on and nor does the screen ive had this problem before because i installed two incompatible ram sticks, however there is only the original ram stick signal is being recieved by the monitor but doesn't show the NO SIGNAL message and it acts as though the pc is turned off.

Answer:pc boots but screen stays blank

The monitor is either not turn onor you have lost the connection[bent pin?]The non Signal is generated in the monitor when it does not get a signal - so no 'No Signal' suggests the monitor is powered off.

what was the result with the ps/2 mouse and the usb mouse? if they all do not work correctly there's something going on with the operating system itself.

Hi all,My laptop screen either stays blank on startup or else goes blank and comes on only when I press the small standby button (repeatedly till I get the screen back). The button is not stuck. I checked that. What else could be the problem and how can I solve it. Please help.Cheers, dols

Answer:Laptop screen stays blank

check power saving settings - right click on an empty section of the screen and look in screen saver. Some laptops have an auto feature that when on batteries they shut down half the power to the screen and it makes them virtually black and appears to be off.

I own a Toshiba laptop. In the past week, everytime I've turned it on, it first goes to a black screen with an underscore blinking in the upper lefthand corner. Then it goes completely black. Then it goes to the XP loading screen, but stays on that for over an hour until I decide to turn it off by holding down the power button. What can I do to get my laptop to work? Thanks.

Answer:Laptop stays on XP loading screen

Immediately after Power On, start tapping the "F8" button once per second until you get to the Safe Mode Menu screen.

Then select "Use Last Known Good Configuration". Report results.

If this fails, do this again, and try to get into basic "Safe Mode", and report results.

Answer:G50-70 Does not start and stays on Black Screen

hi arsalanjunejo
Welcome to the Forums.
From you observation, it seems like an internal component is failing (e.g., the HDD).
If the HDD is still detected in the BIOS, can you try these steps:
1. Using another PC, follow this guide on how to create an Windows 8.1 USB installation media
2. Boot from the Win8.1 media that you have created on Step 1 and on the Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt then type:
chkdsk C: /F   (where C:\ is your Windows installation drive and /F fixes errors on the disk)
When finished, reboot the machine and observe if you can now boot into Windows
Let me know how it goes.

My screen seems to have a loose connection. It turns off when tilted back. Just a gentle touch to the back of it turns on again but then shuts off. I have to tilt it forward for it to remain on. The computer remains on, just the screen goes blank.

Hi My daughter has an Advent laptop. A few days ago she turned it on to find that the screen stays black. You can barely make out the word Windows as it loads and then very very faintly the desktop. I thought initially that she had inadvertently turned the screen brightness right down but i have had a look at it and it isn't that. Any idea what might have happened? Thanks.

Answer:Laptop Screen Stays Black

Looks like the Screen backlight as gone. You could try the fn ket plus the one with a Sun on it. But don't hold out much hope

After the screensaver automatically turns off the display (after 20 minutes), the screen STAYS black, no matter what I do it won't turn back on. I have pressed buttons on the keyboard, mouse, and turned the display on and off. I have to hard reset my computer... it sucks man! What is going on? I looked in the power options and sleep is on 'never' and turn off hard disk is on 'never'. I was looking for hypernation, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I deleted my hybernation files a while back because they were taking up space and I never had used it.

This has just started fairly recent, when I got my new video card (eVGA 9800GTX+ 512MB) it started doing it, but that is around the same time I deleted my hybernation files, that is why I suspect it, but I can't find anywhere to enable or disable it. I checked in power settings under advanced and it isn't there.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

What's going on? I need help, this is driving me nuts, I am hard resetting my computer almost every day because of this. I don't want to shut off automatic display shutoff because my Acer X191W monitor gets hot and I like it to cool down when the screen gets shut off. (In the past I had this same model of monitor burn up on me, don't know why, but I suspect heat. This thing gets really warm after a couple hours. They sent me a new one for free then, but my warranty is up now.)

Help please,

Answer:Screen stays black after screensaver

I would have to agree that deleting your hybernation files is probably the cause. Since they are only needed if you allow your computer to hibernate, there must be another step to shutting it off. It does seem like you checked the right places though. I would assume it would be in your power settings.

You might want to check you BIOS though. If it's disabled there, I'd think you'd be ok.

I got a new graphics card today (GTS 450) and I slotted it in, when I start it up the screen stays black, however, if I leave it for 20 seconds or so I can hear the windows start up sound.. I know my screen isnt gone because I've connected it to my laptop and it works fine. I have the Blue and White cable plugged in my monitor and my computer and still nothing, thanks.

Answer:Computer screen stays black

Do you get any signs of "life" (like the BIOS Info screen etc)
If so it's probably a driver issue (did you remove the old drivers before the switch) ?

If not, there are IMHO only 5 possibilities:
#1 The card wasn't seated properly -- reseat it
#2 The card draws more power than your PSU can handle -- get a better PSU
#3 you forgot to connect the extra power cable --connect it
#4 you bend one or more pins in the video cable -- replace
#5 The card is defective -- RMA

This morning, Windows installed 5 updates, which I had postponed from yesterday. It told me to reboot but when it did, it got stuck at the Press ESC point. There was no disk activity. I turned off and rebooted again several times with the Windows Repair disk in the DVD drive. I was able to run the startup test but it said it couldn't repair it. The log said the the fault was caused by a critical update.
I went into System Restore, but I am unsure of the options. It showed a screen with all my partitions already ticked, including the Windows boot partition which was greyed out.
Am I supposed to leave all the partitions ticked, or if I don't, will I then lose those partitions?

I currently have the Wondershare LiveBoot 2012 DVD running but I'm not sure what option I need to use. Recover MBR, Recover Boot Sector, or Recover Boot files, or all of them?

I I'm really hoping someone can give me advice with this as I'm stuck, not wanting to do the wrong thing!

Thank you.

Answer:Screen stays at 'Press ESC for options'

Problem solved!

I made the choice to use Bootsector Recovery option and that fixed it.

When Using the Wondershare Liveboot disk, if I had used _any_ of the three recovery options (Recover MBR, Recover Boot Sector, or Recover Boot files) would I have caused more problems if I has used the wrong one?

And if I had used the System Restore from the Windows 7 repair disk should I leave the ticks in all my other partitions?

So, my computer has had this as a recurring problem for about a year now. After suffering some form of trauma, (a small child running into, someone tripping over it, etc.) my computer screen will turn a solid color, usually gray or blue. After shutting it down the monitor turns black and attempting to boot up the computer causes the monitor to stay black, though the fans in the case turn on and machine makes various clicks and whirs.

Every time this has happened in the past I have gone into the case, disconnected all outside cables, the video card, the battery on the motherboard, and occasionally other things as well, sort of haphazardly. I let the thing sit for a while and then plugged everything back in and after maybe one or two iterations of this process the thing eventually booted up.

After it's most recent trauma (having a laptop dropped on it =_=; ) it hasn't booted up properly after several unplug-and-replug-everything routines. The fans still start up, like before, but I haven't been able to get video to work. I have tried disconnecting the video card and plugging the monitor into the built in graphics on the motherboard but that still didn't work. While "on" I tried pressing various "locks" on the keyboard and found that numlock caused a light to light up, but neither caps nor scroll lock did ( I don't know if this means anything, but I figured I'd throw it out there ). No sounds are emitted by the speakers, but ... Read more

2 months ago,my HDD IDE died because of "the click of death" thingy and now, recovers itself (its kinda weird),the windows starts normally,i couldn't hear any clicks from my HDD anymore but after a few days, when i restarted my PC properly (i restarted it from the "start menu") goes the "new" problem...i restarted my pc,my system info appears (the RAM and the video card thingy),then, the ASUS motherboard logo appears...and after that...a blinking underscore appears in a black screen...after a few seconds, the "blinking underscore" finally disappeared BUT my screen remains in blank and black and stays there forever,it didn't even reach the windows loading screen.I did tried to disconnect and connect my cables from the motherboard,i even tried to disconnect and connect my HDD from the motherboard and did the same with my video card and RAM but it didn't solve the problem.

Ok so about a month back my lcd just stopped working. It has a lit background but it stays black. I called hp and they had me do some troubleshooting but it didn't work and they said my display was no good anymore so we left it there (I didnt want to pay all that money to fix it). About 3 days after that it magically worked again but one day it seemed like it was trying to go out again the picture got real grainy for a second then it went back to normal. Now I'm back where I started. I've tried everything, when I hook up an external monitor it works so it has so be lcd related. Any help/advice??

Have you attempted to connect an external display to see if you can get some sort of display? That will help make the determination if it is the motherboard itself or if it is the screen or a cable that could be having an issue.

I recently bought a used computer from my work (a gateway). I'm sure they remove a lot of stuff before reselling them. When I hooked it up, it makes the music likes it's coming on, but the computer screen stays blank. It's like it's putting itself in sleep mode or something. I can't get to the control panel or anything. Does anyone know what is causing this? My place of business sold several of these, and I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing problems. Is it possible I need to run some kind of disc if they removed something vital? Thanks for any help.

I've had this before but can't remember what I did to stop it
It Is exactly like you pull the dvi/hdmi lead out of monitor/gpu everything still working i.e. if playing video on youtube it carries on playing just no picture.
I think it was something to do with Intel's built in gpu, but I have disabled it everywhere I can think of bios, device manager etc.
Can anyone through some light on this please as it's startingto annoy me now

My rig specs in sig.

Answer:Random black screen, rig stays on !!

When does this occur? At random? Only when videos/games are playing? Also, what is the exact behavior? Is the monitor giving off behavior as if it has lost its video source, like an error saying the source was lost or it is switching through different connections to find one? Can you tell if your system is locked up, or if it's still accepting your input? The best way to determine thsi is to have the display lost when playing a video, then pressing a key to stop/start playback.

If the monitor is acting like it's not connected to the PC, then it can be a bad video port on your card, a bad/loose video cable, or the monitor itself has a bad port or is just plain bad. You will want to start with potential physical suspects before dabbling with software. Have you tried actually running the video through your onboard video (make sure to enable it and stuff of course) instead of your graphics card and see if that worked?
