Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

Question: Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

Preferred Solution: Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

Have you attempted to run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard diagnostic software? It has a short test and an extended test.

Are you trying to recover anything from this drive? Or just trying to find out if it's broken?

when I tried to using that, just show " cann't open volume for direct access"

my hard disk didn't appear on my computer list, but I can reject it.

Answer:External hard drive disk unknown n not initialized!

Sorry to say your WD Elements is dead and you have tried everything. There is nothing left for me to do, honestly. I would have done the same thing before declaring it dead.. No DIY data recovery is possible. The only option open to you is to entrust it to Western Digital Data Recovery partners in your region. Check with them whether there is any hope of recovering data in good shape.Telephonic consultation is free.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

My PC wouldn't boot off the SSD (with Win 10 OS). It said there were boot problems and tried to diagnose the problem but it doesn't boot. I'm now using the original HD with Win 7. I'd like to get the SSD working if I can. The SSD is OCZ - 240 GB or so.

But between last night and today, the SSD has gotten worse. I can't access it at all now. Last night I was able to access it as an external drive. What I did in between was a chkdsk of the HD just to make sure it was OK. Then this morning I saw that the SSD had problems.

Disk Management shows the SSD as disk 1, but it has no information on it. It just says the disk is unknown and uninitialized.

I saw a recommendation for Partition Wizard 9.1 Free. But that doesn't show the drive at all. I attached screen shots as a Word document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a internal 3.5" HDD WD Black 2 TB and try to hook it up in the PC but it doesnt not appear anymore in My Computer. It was working few weeks ago. When opening Disk Management it says the disk is not initialized and it didnt state how many GB available on the hard disk (unallocated). Disk Management tried to initialized the hard disk and it pops out the following errors:
1. Virtual Disk Manager: Incorrect Function
and
2. Virtual Disk Manager: The device is not ready.

I have also tried using a powered USB cable and also connected in directly to the MoBo via SATA but the problem still persist.

I also ran disk part and it shows Disk 3 and Disk 4 as both online but both having size of 0 B

Below is the screen shot of Disk Management. When i right click on the HDD, there are four functions: Initialize Disk, Offline, Properties and Help however the the Initialize Disk function is greyed out.

I have Partition Wizard 9.1 and the attached picture below is the screenshot of the main GUI. It shows bad disk on the particular hard disk
I tried running Partition Recovery Wizard on the mentioned HDD and it shows a partition of only 512 Bytes but none of my files are visible (no preview)

I just need to retrieve the files in the Hard disk as it contains important files and pictures that havent been backed up. Any help and suggestions are welcomed! Thanks

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Hi, thanks for reading this and thanks for your help.

My laptop took a fall and after that it doesnt enter the boot sequence for windows, stops at the laptop manufacturer logo.

I remove my hdd from the laptop and put into a external drive i keep for this purpose, checking hdd?s.

I can?t find the drive in my computer but I can see it in disk managment. It says Disk unknown - not initialized.

I?ve tried using PW but i cant see the drive on there. I would really like to keep my files I have on that drive but it seems to me that it toast.

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Hi, My DVD Recorder died, so I took out the HDD Seagate DB35.2 and plugged it in my laptop. I get the above message in disk management. I also tried Knoppix 7.0 but the disk does not show up. My scope is to save the content in the disk and move it to my PC, is it a mission impossible? Any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks Alex

Answer:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

This 2.5" SATA drive is from a Toshiba that seems to have died this morning. There's no boot, no BIOS, nada.
I removed the drive and attached it via USB to my Win7 box where it shows as "Unknown, Not initialized, and offline." There are no rt-click options in disk management. I can hear the drive spinning, but it shuts down on its own occasionally, and sometimes won't power up at all without a bit of fiddiling.
I can't get any response at all from my Linux box, and neither Test Disk nor Recuva finds it at all.
Is there anything else to do, or is this drive dead, as I suspect it is?

Answer:Disk unknown, offline, not initialized.

If it's not being recognized properly, there isn't anything else that you can do.

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

Hi,

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Start with this free tool. You should try to recover the partition before worrying about recovering the data. If you can recover the partition, the files should be OK if they haven't been over-written.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Select Partition Recovery Wizard. Choose the drive, then full disk, quick scan. Quick Scan may take 5 or more hours.

If the partition is eventually found, select and double click on it. You should then see all files in the Explorer.

I have this 160GB hard drive that I have not been using for a while, yet I am very sure it was working fine the last time I used it.

Today when I plugged it in to my new notebook that is running Windows 8.1 now, it doesn't detect my hard drive. I also tried on other notebook and it has the same issue. So I know the problem is most likely on the hard drive.

Using Command Prompt, it says Disk 1's status is "Online", but size is "0".

Here is the status at Computer Management:
Disk 1
Unknown
Not Initialized

I also tried to Initialize on MBR, but it returned me with "Incorrect function." message.

I tried "Troubleshoot" and the result says:
"USB Mass Storage Device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0
Plug the device into an available USB 2.0 port..."
My notebook has 3 USB ports where according to the manual, 2 of them are backward compatible to 2.0... I tested on each, but it is still not working.

What should I do? Although I have not been using it for a while, I wish to check the content first before formatting it. I might have some forgotten, yet important files within.

Thanks in advance. Hope I can be assisted here.

Answer:HDD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized, Online

If the controller in the enclosure failed removing the drive and slaving it into a desktop PC may let you recover your files. If the drive failed there isn't much you can do.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

I am trying to recover data from laptop internal HDD use as an external hard drive to recover data from that HDD. I can't see my HDD in my computer but in DISK Managemnet, there is a message, "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initizalized"

Please Help!!

Thanks,

Answer:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

I am experiencing the same issue as with jenny123 but with an additional problem. I am troubleshooting a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive for my buddy. It is previously working but one day, it is not detected anymore by any device. It is found in the Disk Management however, it is listed as Unknown, Not Initialized, and not showing the partition as shown in the screenshot.

When I try to change it from Offline to Online, I am encountering the error:
"Virtual Disk Manager: The system cannot find the file specified"

I also used the DISKPART in cmd but it is not showing Disk 1 as shown below.

The external hard drive is found in disk drives but it is not showing it's model name.

I tried all the recommended software (partition wizard, testdisk, icare) but still no luck. I also tried searching online for an answer but there's no closure to their issues as well. Hope someone can help on this as he need a) the drive and b) recover the files in the external drive. Thanks!

EDIT: The drive can be seen in the Devices and Printers as shown below.

Answer:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

Hi

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

Hello,

I have used the tittle from another thread as my issue is very similar, only none of what is posted there worked for me.

So I have a WD 500gb HDD. (Actually I am not 100% sure it is a HDD and not a SDD)
I have plugged it in various PC and laptops. When doing so, you get the usual sound que. It also installs the driver according to the little pop up window.
However after that, the drive is not visible in "My Computer".

When I check the drive in Computer Management>Disk Management, it wants me to initialise the disk. Which, I know I do not want to do (thanks to one of your earlier posts) as this will over write my data.
In Disk Management the disk is "Unknown" and "Not Initialised" It also does not give any volume. Pics of both of these attached.

I have tried using Partition Wisord free. It does not even see the drive.
I have tried using Photorec. It does not see the drive.
I have used R-Studio. It does see the disk, but I am not able to scan it. Again also no disk volume. Again Picture attached.

I am hopeful for a solution, as I feel like the symptoms suggest that I do not have a head misalignment. But I might be wrong on that.

Hoping for someone with some mad skills to help me out here.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I just got a new Y570 Laptop with a 64 gb ssd. In the disk management window, there are two hard drives listed. There is a disk 0, which has four partitions on it, and a disk 1 which is unknown and initialized. Disk 0 is the HDD that comes with the computer. When I try to initialize Disk 1, I get a message saying The disk cannot find the sector requested. What does this mean? Also, is disk 1 the ssd that I'm supposed to have? Another problem:On my hdd, I have an empty partition that says Healthy (OEM partition). It has no file system or letter assigned to it. It is 14.75 gb, and according to disk management, all 14.75 gb are free. What is it, and can I delete it without affecting anything else on my computer?

hi galaxion2,first of all, do not delete the 14.75 gb partition. it's hidden/system partition that your computer will need to use it during one key recover process.secondly, as you noticed, disk1 is ssd.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

Can someone please help?

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery service and am awaiting a quote.

4. The Data Lifeguard Diagnostic from western digital managed to detect my external and showing there is bad sector but when i tried to repair, it give me this message -unable to repair bad sector-

Please help!!! is there any chance i can fix this?

Answer:Please help, disk 1 unknown not initialized (western digital external)

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum.

My external hard disk (Seagate) is detected in the task bar after connecting, but not visible in "My Computer".

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

SEE ATTACHMENTS !!!!!!!!!

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Your reply is appreciated !!!!!!!!

Hi Pradeep,

Welcome onboard.

" I have tried all tools" - can you please enumerate what all tools?

Have you tried running the Seagate SeaTools for Windows to diagnose/repair.

If not check your external drive now.

Hi all, Let me start off by saying i have spent the last few hours looking online for anything that would be able to help sort out my problem and found your forum the most helpful and the only one i have signed up to. So thankyou in advance.

I have a WD1200D036 (2.5 120GB external) that is not showing in My Computer nor was it showing up in DM but after going to device management\Disk Drives then Volumes tab and clicking on Populate it turned up in Disk Management as: Disk 1 Unkown not initialized. when i click on it and select initialize disk it opens up and asks me to select disk 1 and what partition style (I just sent with MBR) then click ok. It pops up with a error "Incorrect Function"

Any ideas??

Answer:Exteranl HDD - Unknown, Not Initialized and no disc size in Disk Manag

Hi

I would suggest verifying the health condition of your hard drive first. You can use "WD Data Life Guard Diagnostic" to do that.

Download : WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD RE2

The WD tool will list both your internal HDD and USB HDD for testing. Select the USB one and choose "Extended Test" to run. Let us know the test result in next reply.

-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
--------------
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

Hello

I am trying to recover data from my external HD 1 TB Fantom Drive GreenDrive. It crashed and I had no choice to force power down. When I look into Disk Management - I see that Disk 1 Unknown Size Not Initialized.

See Disk Man.JPG for printscreen of Disk Management.

I tried following the Mini Partition Tool advice and did not find the external drive on the software. Please see Mini Partion Tool.JPG for print screen.

I am thinking about buying another external HD 2TB and clone this drive to recover the data. Any advice to clone a drive that I cannot select.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Fantom Drives GreenDrive Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized - Data Recove

Quote:
It crashed

I've seen that and the HDDs had truly crashed, wasn't anything I could do but in a couple of instances I sent them off to a firm that recovers data if the platters/disks in them haven't been physically damaged. Sometimes the read-write heads will scratch the platters and they are then truly screwed up.

hello there ,

i tried to plug it in another computers but nothing changed.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?

Answer:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

It is my brother's hard drive & it has very important data related to his working. It is a 2tb WD my passport ultra external hard disk which was used as NTFS with only one partition.
My brother told me that he deleted some data from the drive by mistake and was recovering the data from the drive but all the windows recovery programs he used just hanged after few minutes (which is also a sign of bad sectors). Then he done the blundered mistake by formatting the drive, the formatting also not completed due to hang situation.

Now the current situation is that the drive is not showing in the windows explorer and when I open the disk management ,the popup came up for initializing the disk either as MBR or GPT. When I try to initialize the disk, it gives me this error:- "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error". I have attached a few screenshots below.

I have tried cloning the drive with clonezilla, tried booting the drive with parted magic, Hire n boot and system rescue CD but neither of them recognized the drive and some also rejected to boot with the drive attached.
Now currently i am scanning this disc for recovering the lost partition in the 'Partition Recovery Wizard' software according to the advice on some old thread here, but this software has detected my disk as 'bad Disk' in the file System column as you can see in the fifth image, so i don't have much hope with this software.

Please tell me if there is any hope left for drive like try... Read more

Answer:wd 2tb external drive - unknown, not initialized and unallocated

Hello nsingla and I am sorry you and your brother have this problem!

Things don't look so good now. You've done and tried a lot with aim you need, still looks like the drive's partition table and/or file system are corrupted to a stage that prevents other software to work correctly onto the drive.

I could additionally suggest trying to scan and repair the drive. Try downloading the WD ultra Drive Utilities for Windows and see if you could repair the drive:

Support Answers

If nothing works, the drive is probably too damaged and beyond repair. Hope this is not the case. But perhaps the worst part for the drive was the formatting attempt. Which, by definition, would delete everything from the HDD.

Good luck and post back with results!

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

This drive was originally a Maxtor back-up drive that my brother in law could never get to accomplish a successful back-up routine when running on his XP desktop system or his new Vista laptop. He gave it to me and I installed upgraded software and tried it on my Vista x64 system and again recieved "back-up failed" error messages. I decided to delete all contents on the drive and use it as a basic external storage drive. My problem is now my system see's it as "Drive not yet initialized". How do I initialize this drive? It's a Maxtor One Touch III, 200 Gb.

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

Hi everyone,

I need some help desperately with my Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD. Until yesterday, I had been using it for less than a year on a desktop PC to run a Windows 7 Professional x64 installation.

After it suddenly stopped working, it can no longer boot into Windows ("BOOTMGR is missing" is shown at startup), and it cannot be recognised in BIOS either.

I removed it and connected it as an external drive to a couple of other computers (a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and a desktop running Windows 8 x64). Even though it showed up as a generic USB device in Device Manager and in the taskbar notification area, it did not appear as a drive in Explorer.

Disk Management showed the following screenshot, where it is listed as Disk 1, which is Unknown and Not Initialized. More importantly, because this seems to be less common than other similarly issues I've looked at here, the disk space doesn't even show.

I've since tried a few tools recommended in previous threads here, with no success:
PhotoRec - did not detect the drive at all
Partition Wizard (free edition) - the drive shows up as 0MB, so there are no partitions to work with
Power Data Recovery (free) - this actually crashes when I select either Lost Partition Recover or Damaged Partition Recovery

I really need to retrieve some data off the disk, and I'm hoping that's not impossible at this point. The fact that the SSD can still power on and (somewhat) show up as an external device is... Read more

This just popped up today and the only thing I can think that I had done since not seeing it was activated AHCI. As can be seen in the attached snip there is a very small partition to the left of the "SSD Common" logical partition. It is bounded by the same green box as the "SSD Common" partition. Hovering over it provides details of it being Free Space 1Mb in size. Right clicking on it provides a menu with everything greyed out except for HELP which simply opens the Disk Management user guide. Should add that both the "SSD General" & "SSD Trade" are W7 bootable partitions with AHCI activated.

Any insight is appreciated.

*edit* -- Oops, meant to place this under Performance & Maintenance.
*edit #2* -- there is also no reference to this 1Mb free space anywhere else on the disk management console (additional info since I failed in posting the full snip. ).

Answer:Disk Management displays unknown/unmanageable 1Mb free space

You could play around with it an extend partition F to the left with Partition Wizard. But why bother. It is such a small sliver.

Answer:My data drive not in Disk Management, listed as an Invalid Dynamic disk in DISKPART?

If you are OK with data loss on disk 0 you can do the following,

diskpart> sel dis 0
diskpart> clean
diskpart> conv dyn

This would reactivate your disk.
Invalid occurs due to many reasons like on spanned volume,
suppose few sectors have gone bad. So you are going to lose that data and as such disk becomes invalid.

Hi there,

So I had a desktop with a single HDD running windows XP, the desktop overheated and automatically shutoff. The next time I powered on the PC, nothing happened - no BIOS, no beeps, nothing! The PC was pretty old so I just figured it had run it's course and I was thinking about getting a laptop anyway.

So I got a new Windows 7 laptop, and after a few days of setting it up I yanked out the hdd from the old XP desktop and plugged it into the laptop's USB port via some SATA to USB cables.

Win7 recognized new hardware and and seemed to install the drive correctly as "USB Storage", but nothing ever appeared in the Windows Explorer. I opened up the device manager and under 'Disk Drives' I saw a 'USB Drive' item. The properties on that item seemed to indicate all the drivers and such were properly installed and the 'device was working properly'. Under the 'Disk Management' section, the disk showed up - but it said it was 'unknown' and 'not initialized', so no partitions showed up (it also prompted me to 'initialize' it, which I DID NOT do).

At this point I've tried several recovery programs, but the biggest issue is that none of the programs actually see the drive, so I can't run the recovery at all. I even tried Hiren's Boot CD, but again, nothing sees the drive - although, I think that I didn't properly install the USB drivers, so I may try that... Read more

About 5 days ago my Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD started running very slow. Transfer speeds dropped to 182kb/s it previously was around 25.6mb/s. So I started backing up as much as I could, but after 5 days and only getting about 300GB backed up I decided to run chkdsk on the drive. That was a bad idea because now I cannot access the drive at all, and I still have 2.12TB of data that isn't backed up.

i guess it's a virtual drive,but i'm not sure.
think i used a mount/unmount software in the past, can't remember when and what i used.

Need you humble advice in how to delete or erase this completely.
But my pc's working very well anyway.

Answer:Solved: delete unknown dvd drive in windows management in xp

If it is a virtual drive then you have to find the program that put it there. The program is not likely to let it go very easily, try right click and left click properties and search for info in there to find the program. When program is found open the program and look thru options to find a way to shut off if possible.

The only other way is when you find the program is to un-install the program.

i have a hard disk 1 TB (i was 5 partitions)..suddenly it did not open..i treid to open it in disk management software it shows picture 1
i treid to open it with the software minitool partition wizard professional it shows its size is negative
how can i solve this problem

Answer:disk1 unknown not initialized

First thing I'd do is try to run the hard drive manufacturer's disk tools on the drive. It may be dead or dying. Shows as "bad disk" with no file system in PW.

And I'd hope I had a backup of whatever is on it.

Hello,
New here to this forum. Been searching and reading for the past week trying to get my HDD to work.

I was able to access my external HD about a week ago, watched a movie off it and fell asleep. When I awoke the next morning, powered on my laptop, it wouldn't boot up so I shut it down and unplugged the HD and powered it back on. Plugged the HD back in, computer sees it but not showing in My Computer.

Within Disk Management, it shows Disk1 - Unknown - Not Initialized.

Searched and searched and searched for different solutions, tried different things and still nothing. I have tried PW but not showing up to be able to scan it. I have a docking station so I pulled the HD out and plugged it into that. PW was able to see it but no partitions found. Tried to run TestDisk (per some other help treads instructions) with nothing found.
I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable.

I have lots of important files on this HD and I really need them. Sending it to a professional is out of the question.

I'm currently about to boot up pendrive and see if it sees anything there.

I can post any screen shots and try anything again. I have done nothing but scans scans scans.

Thank you!

Answer:WD My Book 3TB Ext HDD - Unknown - Not Initialized

Hi HAPPYSOk,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I would have been happy to help you had it not been a Western Digital External drive.

Is your drive's model No. this WDBFJK0030HBK?

Your drive is hardware encrypted and should the interface card that contains the encryption chip and the decryption key fail, even if the HDD itself is good, you can't get your data out by hooking it up as a second drive in a dock or sata connect on a desktop. You can get what data is there inside but it will be the encrypted data.

Your statement "I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable." confirms this.

The only way you can get your data back is to send the enclosure and drive to the Western Digital patronised Data Recovery Partners listed by WD here WD Support / Data Recovery Partners. Only they have been supplied with the decrypt key by WD and they will do it in a jiffy for you.

Free consultation, So get a quote from them and you will never again buy a WD drive, I am sure.

Hey guys,

I have this new Western Digital My Book that I got about 6 months ago and it suddenly will not show up when I plug it in. I tried looking for solutions on what's happening but I can't get past the first few steps, until I found one where it says that the drive is probably toasted! Anyway, I'm still not giving up hope. I tried it on two computers, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it's still the same. I tried initializing it and it's giving me "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I would like to chkdsk it but I forgot what the drive letter of the hard drive, so I can't really search it.

Here're some screenshots.

Answer:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... but I had almost exactly the same thing happen to me on a Seagate 2TB hard drive. Working for months, even passing surface checks with no errors and then, one day -- "bad disk".

I've tried every data recovery app I could find against it (4 of them) and none of them find anything.

I've had drives fail me over the years and have never run into this situation where the drive powers up but NOTHING can be recovered from it.

So, I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery outfit

Answer:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Right click on it and choose Create Parittion. Choose the type of partition. Then format it. I recommend doing the slow format. It may take an hour or so, but I think you're better off in the long run.

My external HDD has crashed after unplugging it accidentally while using it. I believe the directory structure has been corrupted. The external HDD shows Unknown, no size, and Not Initialized on the Disk Management screen:

I have tried using MiniTool Partition Wizard as described in this thread.

I'm not sure where to go now to try to recover the data on this HDD.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:External HDD shows Unknown, no size, Not Initialized

Hello,

My laptop's OS is 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium. I've been usng my Portable 1TB WD Elements SE external HDD for over 2 years. One fine day Win 7 displayed "Do you want to scan & fix removable drive G:" prompt. I check marked both subsequent boxes on the prompt and clicked Scan & Fix. After complete execution of the Scan & Fix (after 12 hrs approx) my Portable 1TB WD Elements SE was shown as Unallocated, Not Initialized & Unknown in the Disk Management and clicking on it windows explorer My Computer window showed the HDD with a Letter but on clicking it an error pop-up with text "Drive G: is inaccessible. Access Denied." was displayed. However, I can still see a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon that gives me a successfully removed hardware message.

I need to recover the data present on the Portable 1TB WD Elements SE external HDD.

So far I've tried Free Trial versions of RecoverMyFiles(Extended Scan), Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery(Extended Scan), Kernell Data Recovery (Extended Scan), Partition Wizard MiniTools (Quick Scan). All of them have scanned the HDD for 12 hours approximately without locating any files for recovery. Partition Wizard MiniTools detected the HDD as a Bad Disk.

Subsequently I tried PhotoRec. It scanned the HDD for 24 hours without any positive result. During pass 0 & pass 1, scanning it kept displaying error reading sector "so and so". But the files didn't populate in the recovery fo... Read more

Hi

The symptoms you posted clearly indicates a hardware issue.

It means the disk surface is severely damaged (has developed pretty huge number of bad sectors ). At this point, Imaging the disk and working on the copy is the best step you can do. I would suggest ;

- Create a RAW disk image using "ddrescue". Since your HDD is a 2TB one, you need a larger capacity drive like 3TB one to store the image.

- Try the trial versions of "GetDataBack" and "R-Studio" on the RAW image. Both supports working with disk images created by "dd" and "ddrescue".

Hello
I got my 1tB WD external disk and it's not working as it used to. The problem came from nowhere, suddenly, totally unexpected. There is/was my precious data on it which I collected for 10+ years and I'd like not to lose it.

Origin:
It was working fine a day ago, no problems occured. Hasn't been unplugged since then. Has never fallen. Has never had any kind of error. But: I've seen some kind of ".COM not responding" problem on my PC (don't remember, closed it immediately). I believe my laptop is in a good and healthy condition.

So, what my WD HDD does is:
- it can be seen as a device by my computer. I can plug it out safely.
- diode shows that it's working (not showing the data transfer activity)
- nothing else

What I see in Device Management/Storage is (as in the title):
Screenshot by Lightshot

What programs I used to try to restore partition:
- Mini tool Partition Recovery Home Edition (quick and deep scan, no results. Shows disk as a Bad Disk)
http://prntscr.com/2wpy8s
- Mini tool Power Data Recovery (pro, non-free tool, however after scan there was no results)
- Find and Mount (no results)
- TestDisk (quick and deep scan, no results)

What I haven't tried doing is connecting the HDD directly to the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Answer:External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

My backup software's profile database is expecting to backup to H:, which was the drive letter for my external backup drive back in XP. This drive comes up in Win7 as K, because Win7 has given my four usb card reader drives the letters F,G,H,I. Disk Management will not show these four card reader drives unless media is inserted (connected vs. disconnected). I have changed the letters for F,G,I to T,U,W, but only because I have those types of cards (SD, CF, MS)...I do not have an XD or SmartMedia card for the one dang drive I really need to change.

What are my options, other than buying the cheapest SM card I can find to make the drive visible for this task? The SmartSyncPro database has many profiles, so remapping all those to point to K would be a major hassle.

Thanks!
Gary

I use Acronis backup and I set it to backup to drive Z. Then go into Disk Management and assign your backup drive to be drive Z. Usually this will never change due to removable drives.

Answer:Usb drive appears in disk management when no usb drive exists

In these cases it is helpful to anyone trying to help you to have your system specs available (TenForums User CP > My Settings > Edit System Spec) , plus a description of everything connected to the PC/Desktop (peripherals).

The mystery drive could be a printer with a storage port, or even a USB hub. Windows 10 seems to have trouble with some USB devices if the drivers are not playing well with the OS.

OK, so.

I just realized I have an external drive that's not hooked up. Been sitting there for I don't know how long. I just completely lost track of how many drives I used to have hooked up. Supposed to be 9, only been showing 8 for a long time.

So I plug it in. 7 gives me the "hardware attached" sound, but nothing happens in Explorer. Shows up in Device Manager. Does show up in Disk Management, but won't let me do anything to it. Cannot initialize, can't go online with it, can't change the drive letter, just says "Disk 8, Unknown, Not Initialized".

Reboot, went into BIOS. Also shows up there.

I'm guessing it's kaput? I know there must have been stuff on there, but it's been so long I can't even remember what it was. TV shows? Movies? Music? Nuclear secrets? The formula for the Higgs Boson?

Have tried 2 cables, one of which is brand new (USB 3, with the Micro B end on it) in both USB 2 and USB 3 ports.

Answer:Bad drive? Fun with Disk Management

Have you tried DISKPART Guy it should show up in there. Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
go to point 4 and see what there is.

I think it is possibly infected with a virus as i also encountered a few Blue Screen of Deaths (BSOD). I wanted to do a full reformat, but could not do so as i can't locate my C & D drives.

The main issue is the viruses in my laptop.

On top of that, i do have a Windows 7 Professional ISO file given by my school for upgrading of the laptop.

I really hope you guys could help me out here.

Hi everybody

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (Amazon.com: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive in Black STAA1000101: Electronics) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

Hi,

I see only CD-ROM drive under Disk Management. Hard disks are not seen. Logical drive C and D are otherwise accessible (eg., via Explorer, Disk Defragmenter) and work normally.

I had setup the following services with Start up Type = Automatic:

Plug and Play (Logon as Local service)
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (Logon as Network Service)
Logical Disk Manager (Logon as Local service)
Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service (Logon as Local service)
I also tried adding the following to the list above without luck:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator (Logon as Network Service)

System: Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP 3

I also had an E drive (Seagate Free Agent Pro connected to USB port). This is not showing anywhere (Explorer or Disk Manager). However, Partition Manger (3rd party software) picked it up and shows correct % used/free. Device Manger shows it correctly too under Disk Drives.

Help please...

Anil

Yea. That's pretty strange. A couple observations / things to do

Disk Management issues
Disk Management does require the two Logical Disk Manager services tho your screen shot does show them as Started so they should be OK

Hi All,

I would really appreciate some expert advise on this issue I have, I am running Windows 8.1 Professional. (and no thats not the issue )

I have just bought myself a new Seagate 5TB internal drive, model is a ST5000DM000. I managed to put the drive as an external and formatted the drive with disk management and also converted the disk to a GPT so it is just one partition as 5TB, the drive will work perfectly fine as an external in a case.

But, if I plug the drive as an internal via SATA cable as a second disk, my bios identifies the drive. Afterwards when Windows tries to boot it takes an additional 3-4 minutes to boot, eventually I log on and the disk is not present nor is it shown in disk management or device manager.

I have tried using different SATA ports on my board (nearly all of them including one that is coloured different which I thought would be my savoir), I am yet to try run it as a secondary drive in another machine which I hope to do in the coming week to see if I can replicate the issue.

Any feedback to this would be sincerely appreciated.

Many thanks

Alex

Answer:New Drive won't show in Disk Management

Format it either as a FAT32 or NTFS partitions. You will have to possibly make it five separate partitions.

Hi,

I can able to see only CD-ROM drive under Disk Management. Hard disks are not seen. Logical drive C and D are otherwise accessible (eg., via Explorer, Disk Defragmenter) and work normally.

Also if I plug flash drive, not appearing in windows explorer or disk management.

Help me to fix the problem please.

Thanks in advance

Having done a bit of research on the problem, I have determined that it is indeed a trojan causing it to happen. Pretty much all the same problems as the following thread, but the solution posted there was not the same for me.

hxxp://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/366193-usb-mass-storage-not-showing-explorer-2.html

Let me start with a laundry list of problems.
1: Disk manager can't locate C drive, only DVD/CD drive. On top of that, can't do a disk cleanup or defrag or anything. I can still get into my folders on the c drive and everything, just can't "see" it.
2: Keep getting a pop-up error window that says :Windows - No Disk. Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c and have to hit cancel or continue 5 or 6 times before it will let me do anything. The solution to this problem was to remap my drive names using disk management, but since I can't seem to find them.....
3: Safely remove hardware icon is in my tray and says I have something plugged in, when I go to stop it my system crashes and reboots itself. Think it has to do with the media card reader on the front of my comp but not 100% sure.
4. My browser gets redirected every time I click on a link. Have to hit the same link on average 3 times to get where I want to go.
5. Was having problems with AVG detecting a trojan on my comp about 2 weeks ago. When i researched it online found that it was the trojan sheur2 and that it... Read more

I have removed a 2.5 HDD from my broken Fujitsu Siemens laptop (XP OS), Fujitsu MHT2080AT (yes, small disk) to copy data to my PC (Vista Premium x64) using a USB HDD casing. When that was done successfully, I started using it as an external backup drive. But after some time it did not show in my computer. I thought maybe the casing was broken, so I bought another one but with the same result.

In disk management it shows as ?Disk 5? and needs to be initialized, but when I right click and chose initialize either MBR or GPT I get ?Disk not ready?. First HDD casing was powered by double USB, and the second one has external power. I even tried to power it from the extra drive power cables inside my computer, but no luck.

I have valuable files on this disk, and I can?t find a way to retrieve them. Can anyone please help?

Hi all,

I have recently started using an old laptop after selling my other ones. It's a Sony Vaio, running Windows Vista Home Edition. It has a lot of virus' that I must have picked up when I was using it before.

So, to solve this, I wanted to wipe my PC and install Windows 7. But, I didn't want to lose my mass of music, so I planned to partition my C: Drive, move my music, then install 7 onto the C: Drive. But when I went to Dis Management to do so, and my C; Drive isn't there? Just my removable disks (SD Card and USB) and my CD-ROM drive. But no C: Drive?

It shows up in My Computer and apart from the million viruses, the C: Drive works normally? Can anyone think of why this might be happening, or more importantly, how I can fix it!?

Thank in advance guys! Hopefully someone can help me!!

Answer:C: Drive not appearing in Disk Management

Dear Shellie.

Why were you not using anti virus on windows is really the question here. I recently had a similar problem with my laptop. I just found the guy who had purchased my macbook and bought it back off him...

Looks like I picked up a virus.

Disk manager can't locate C drive, only DVD/CD drive. Win Explorer shows drives OK. Also, My browser gets redirected every time I click on a link.

I am using Symantec Anti-virus 10.1. I've done the basic full scan, shows something called Backdoor.Tidserv.inf, but it won't delete. Not sure if that's my problem or not.

This is the same problem that gibby1282 posted on may 12, 2009, resolved by Amateur on May 15. I haven't done any of the steps in that post, decided i better get "guided" by someone who knows what they are doing.

I read the First Steps instructions posted as well, have downloaded the scans recommended, but have not run any of the scans until i'm instructed to do so.

Any help is appreciated. thanks.

I recently worked on a system that was running OK, but seemed to be acting funny to me, so I did a lot of exploring. I ended up noticing something.

When I was in ADMINISTRATION TOOLS - Computer management - Storage - Disk Management I couldn't see the 'C:' drive. Anyone else have that before?

Here's a post I made in case they want to try it out themselves.

*********
There's one virus I found recently, that NO anti-virus or malware detectors I had, or that were already installed on the systems, could find. Here's the only sign I ever saw that it was on a system.

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Go to Administrative Tools
3. Go into Computer Management
4. Go into Storage - Disk Management

In Disk Management, look for the same drive letters you see under 'My Computer'. For instance, if you have a C: drive that you boot off of under My Computer, be sure you have it under Disk Management.

ON two systems I recently worked on, I did NOT see a C: drive in Computer management, but it showed under My Computer. I ended up having to remove the drives from the infected system and attached them to another system, then have that system scan the drives. A few programs were able to find the Virus's and remove them while the drives were no longer the boot drive. I then put them back in the original system, and all was ok.

Good Luck 4U2U!!!!

Answer:Missing C: Drive in Disk Management

With all of my explorations, it's very surprising, but I've definitely never seen that one before. Do you remember the exact name of the virus that was causing the issue? I'd love to know so that i can look it up.

Hi,

WinXP SP3, running on acer laptop.

I've just bought a Plexus USB to IDE/SATA adaptor, so as to connect to some old HDD's I've got .

When I connect the USB cable to the PC, it appears as a removable device (no drive letter assigned), and appears in Device manager as a disk drive with the HDD ID showing correctly, and according to XP the device is working properly, but it does not appear at all in Disk management.

According to the Plexus info, no drivers are required for XP.

I've tried upate driver - there's no later one - and roll back to earlier - there's no earlier one.

I've tried two different HDD's (one IDE, the other SATA), and they are correctly identified in device manager.

I've tried various connection sequences (connect power to drive and alow to spin up then connect to USB, and vica versa).

Could anyone suggest what the problem is, and what to try next please?

I have a another USB HDD and a flashdrive, both are working perfectly.

cheers
mabana

Answer:XP Disk management doesn't see USB drive

The adapter is being recognized by the computer, but not the HDD. If there is a power adapter for the adapter be sure to use it. Also be sure to plug it in directly into the wall socket and not through a surge protector or Extension cord (weak power will not let the drive be recognized) also, be sure that you are plugging the USB cable into the Back USB port of the computer not the front (if it is a desktop) Or though a Docking station or Hub (if it is a laptop) Low power again. If all else fails and it is not recognized on another computer then the HDD may have failed.

Answer:Partition drive by shrinking in Disk management

Hello Microsofthater, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The size of the available space to be shrunk can be restricted by the amount of space currently allocated to on the hard drive for the virtual memory page file, System Restore max size, and hibernation files. The red warning box under step 6 in the tutorial below can explain more about this and help you work around this to a point.

Disk Management - Shrink Partition

I just built a new system and put 5 old hard drives from my other system into it. Two drives were in external drives, and one is a 3TB.

Windows 7 recognizes the drive in the Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management but not in Windows- the drive doesn't appear and isn't accessible as with my other drives. Also, within Disk Management, windows says the that the disk has all of its storage space free (2794.39GB), which isn't the case- the disk is pretty full.

From what little I've read online, it looks like Windows has difficulty recognizing 3TB drives, andt hat 2TB is the limit for NTFS volumes. I read that Windows can recognize GUID Partition Table (GPT) disks of 3TB and that initializing the disk as that would work. I was suspicious of initiliazing, but decided to see what would happen. Initializing the drive as a GPT drive within Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management took about a second, so the disk now reads as Unallocated. But I still don't have the options I need to make it active in Windows (assign driver letter and name, Mark partition as active, Open, Explore, etc.).

The options I have are: New Simple Volume, Properties, and Help (two other properties are greyed out- New Striped Volume, and New Spanned Volume).

I don't want to proceed any further because I'm unsure what I'm doing. I don't think the data was deleted b/c the process of initializing the drive as a GPT drive happened instantly.

Answer:Question about disk management for 3TB drive in Windows 7

It's not recognizable in Windows because there's no volume set up on it and it hasn't been formatted yet. 2TB is not the limit for NTFS volumes, it's the limit for MBR. Anything more, and you need GPT, which from what you've said, you already have.

If the space on the disk is showing up as unallocated, then your data is pretty much gone. If you don't have it backed up, then you'll need a program like GetDataBack to recover it. After you have that taken care of, you'll need to go into Disk Management and use the option "New Simple Volume", then format and assign a drive letter. Then, you'll be able to see it Windows.

DVD/CD drive is not listed on "Computer" nor on "Disk Management"

Windows "Trouble shooting" reports "TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633J" is missing (or corrupted ?)

With a DVD movie in the drive, the drive spins up but does not auto play. It just spins down and stops. The drive is not listed in VLC.

Four days ago I uninstalled (using RevoUninstaller) some ancient apps I never use with a restore point before each uninstall. 4-Feb, 5-Feb
1. CloneDVD2.exe
2. AnyDVD.exe ... this one was a ring in (unsolicited)
- both by SlySoft.com ... there is an obvious omen in there ...

I have tried 3 system restores, one each before the unstalls and one a daily (1-Feb) system restore. Each System Restore failed.

On the third "fail" (1-Feb) I decided to try Windows Troubleshooter, targeting devices and hardware

After the attempted fix ...

I am way in over my head, this is the first system Restore I have done in 25 years.

CONFESSION TIME:
For the past 12 months I have been reading up on virual drives, imaging, OEM backup, recue discs etc ... all a bit late for todays dilema.
I have never made a media disc of the OEM -- could I do that onto a USB stick (or USB pocket drive) or must it be a CD/DVD ?
recently I made a "Rescue Disc" for my new unused Lenovo ... so I am learning

How would I know if it is a hardware or a driver problem ?

Would appreciate some help, thank you

Answer:DVD/CD drive not showing on Computer nor Disk Management

Any easy hardware check: Try booting from bootable CD/DVD. Boot from CD/DVD is handled by BIOS (and before Windows even starts running). So if it boots from media OK, it's a windows issue

To check Windows, download and run Filter Load Order Tool. Is the DVD drive listed in the display? If so, select it then hit the Clipboard button in the display. Paste the results into next post

Previously, I had installed Windows 7 on a new SSD and also installed a new 1TB hard drive for file storage, photos, and programs. The SSD crashed and I had to get another one. I just installed Windows on it and then added my hard drive, which still has files on it when I ran the first SSD.

The hard drive shows in BIOS but not in My Computer. I went to Disk Management and it was listed as Foreign. I read that I should choose the option, Import Foreign Disk, which I did. I kept the same drive letter it had the first time around, and which showed this time, W. It is now listed as Disk 1, Dynamic Online, & Healthy. Now what do I need to do to continue to use it as I did previously, while keeping my data? I don't want to lose my files and photos, but I can always download the software again if I lose the programs.

Does it show up in the Windows Explorer? (It should.)

If so, you are done. (You may need to assign a drive letter to it.)

Hello:

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit.

I do not know when my dvd/cd drive disappeared, but it has. It is not shown in Disk Management. However, it works insofar as that I can boot from it with a boot disk. I cannot run disks in it.

Disk Manager shows drives C-H (SSD), J (ext), L (ext) and Z (mapped drive of other computer), but not my DVD/CD drive.

What can I do to get the DVD/CD (optical) disk to show? (I seem to remember , way back, that you had to make sure drive letters were activated. Don't know how these days; have looked!)

Thanks in advance.
