Hard drive installed, shows in Drive Mngmnt, in Bios, but not in Comp.

Question: Hard drive installed, shows in Drive Mngmnt, in Bios, but not in Comp.

I have a backup drive that we had used for for a while (WD 6000aak), previously in an external drive enclosure. I connected it today via USB to find that the computer has the driver installed, the drive appears in the Devices list, but it does not show in My Computer. In "Disk Management" the drive appears but is not assigned a drive letter. Also, all the options for the volumes are greyed out and cannot be selected - thus I cannot assign a drive letter.

I have tried this on multiple computers. I have also removed it from the enclosure and connected the drive via SATA... the result is identical. I checked the bios and the drive appears there.

The drive does spin when powering up. It is hot (even though it cannot really be accessed).

Any suggestions? Is this drive done?

Preferred Solution: Hard drive installed, shows in Drive Mngmnt, in Bios, but not in Comp.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hard drive installed, shows in Drive Mngmnt, in Bios, but not in Comp.

Go to Disk Management, in the bottom part of the screen, right click the drive, select 'change drive letter or path', next window select add, next window select a drive letter from the drop down box. For an external drive it's best to use a letter lower in the alphabet. If disk management wants to initialize and format it, don't do it if there is data on it you don't want to lose. If no data or if you don't care, go ahead. It will show in computer when a drive letter is assigned.

I have a WD passport USB drive. It no longer shows up on my alienware laptop (running xp), but works perfectly on my desktop (running vista). It powers up on my laptop but does not show up in the disk manager, explorer, or on the my computer. I have tried everything I could think of to get this thing working but nothing has worked. The only thing I can narrow thw problem down to is when I installed a new USB cannon camera on my computer. The Drive worked fine before that, but does not work now. Other than that, I have no clue. Any help is appreciated.

No idea what you are talking about. You need to explain IN DETAIL. What shows your old config? What does ram have to do with the hd? What are you talking about?

My computer froze at HP screen while booting. Replaced the Seagate 7200.12 500gb model ST3500418AS hard drive with another Seagate 7200 500gb model ST3500641AS-RK. The computer now boots but the old model shows in the Bios and disk management. How do I get it to reflect the correct model?

Answer:New hard drive operating but old one shows in bios

Have you tried the F5 command to reset the bios back to default? Sometimes this can happen if the HDD controller is not set to auto detect your drive. Most, if not all new mobo bios are by default set to auto detect. While in setup or bios hit the F5 key on your keyboard it will ask you to say yes hit y and the system will restart. Then go back in to check if the correct model is listed in IDE settings. If it isnt let me know and Ill tell you how to manually select auto detect. I will need to know what model of bios you have in order to do this because not all bios have settings in the same place.

Hope this helps you

Ok, so I got a new asus P8z68-V pro motherboard.
Im re-using my current 750gb SATA drive.
I plugged it into the sata port, and start the computer.

When it starts it says "no hard drive is detected!"

I go into the bios, and on the bottom it has a disk drive, and a SATA drive.
It recognizes that the sata drive is there, but when i go to start up it says no hard drive is detected.

I have tried a few different sata ports and it is the exact same thing.
Any idea how to fix it, i am getting very frustrated at this point
thanks a lot

Hello Everyone,

Over the last couple days, I built a new PC and installed windows 8.1. Initially I had some issues installing windows, so I unplugged all my drives except the SSD and DVD. I installed windows to my SSD.

Everything works great!

Now I started adding my drives back in 1 at a time. When I plugged my 2nd SSD in, it showed up in BIOS, but not in Disk Management or Device Manager. So I booted back into the install CD, it showed up in the disk manager there. Since this was also a blank SSD, I partitioned and formated the drive from the install CD, then exited the installer and booted back to my windows drive.

I have 2 SSD drives working great!

Now to add my 2TB HDD... Same issue, it shows up in BIOS and the install disc, but not in Disk Management or Device Manager. This drive does not have a boot partition on it, however, it does have two existing data partitions. They were made from my previous windows 7 system and the option to delete these partitions is grayed out in the install disc menu. I also have some data that I would like to keep on it. I have a USB dock that I can use to read the contents of the disk just fine. Everything is there and in working order.

Can anyone help me out here? What is different about Windows 8.1 that is preventing my hard drives from showing up in windows proper? I am reading things about UEFI online, but nothing seems to fit my exact scenario. I will try and post some screen shots when I get back at it.

I've just bought a 200GB IDE drive. The BIOS (for which there is no update) shows it as only 137GB which I understand is the maximum size (it's an old comp). Windows recognises it as the correct size. Would it be OK to use the disk, provided it's partitioned into drives of less that 137GB? Or will I have to install a PCI/IDE adaptor card. Thanks.

I have an "AMD A8-5500 APU 3.2 GHz" computer - A8 Vision HP Pavilion BIOS v.7.10 I installed a second SATA drive (a 3TB Seagate) and booted up the factory installed OS on the first SATA drive. The operating system has no problem seeing the drive, so I installed a second OS into a 700GB partition on the second SATA drive. However, when I booted the system to finish the OS installation, the BIOS couldn't see the second SATA drive. Booting into the OS on the first SATA drive, no problems, the OS can see the second SATA drive. So, the problem occurs at boot time. The BIOS won't see the second SATA drive. However, if I interrupt the BIOS at boot, and go in to run a diagnostic (and I cancel that and not run the diagnostic), all of a sudden, the BIOS can see the 2nd SATA drive and I can boot off it. Interrupting the normal BIOS boot and entering the BIOS setup, and then canceling out, will 100% of the time cause the BIOS to see the second SATA drive. If I don't do this, the BIOS doesn't see the other SATA drive 100% of the time. This is a real annoyance. I looked for an updated version of the BIOS (assuming this was an identified bug fixed with a later BIOS release), but can't seem to locate anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks,SFMChris

Answer:Second installed hard drive isn't seen by BIOS

I do not think it has anything to do with the "Windows Boot Loader (Winload.exe or Winload.efi)". However, I did try it out and running a "bcdedit /set {GUID} path \windows\system32\winload.exe" produced a non-booting OS (even if I attempted to use my current workaround by interrupting the BIOS at boot). Here is the current behavior I am seeing when I hit ESC to enter the BIOS setup (you have a window of less than 2 seconds to hit this key before the WIndows Boot Loader menu comes up). The following are the paths to settings in the BIOS menu, followed by the settings I am seeing:       * Boot Menu                - Shows only SATA0       * Computer Setup > Storage > Device Configuration               - Shows only SATA0       * Computer Setup > Storage > Boot Order > Legacy Boot Sources               - Shows only SATA0       * Computer Setup > Storage > DPS Self-test               - Shows both SATA0 and SATA1 ?! UPDATE:I just found the fix (HP devs will need to fix this bug though). SOLUTION:  I made the following BIOS change... I have a Compaq Presario sr2020nx.

The hard drive was making an awful noise for a few weeks and then it just quit working. I ordered a new Western Digital 500GB Caviar hard drive and installed it.
Now when I turn the computer on nothing happens. I just have a blank screen. No bios screen appears and nothing happens when i put cd's in the rom drives.

Both roms light up but nothing happens. The cpu fan comes on. The monitor light stays orange as if the computer is off. When I unhook the monitor cable it immediately turns green and the monitor kicks on showing cable unplugged. When I plug the cable back in it goes straight back to an orange light and blank screen.

Any clue what this might be? Bad Bios? need a new battery? did I fry the mother board? What should I check or try? Why will the BIOS screen not come on?

I have changed hard drives before and normally I just install it and put the Windows XP cd in the drive and format it.

no clue what is going on here.

Answer:new hard drive installed, blank screen no bios

Have you tried clearing CMOS? Unplug the computer from the wall, and press the power switch to drain the remaining power in the PSU. Remove the small button battery from the motherboard for about 2 minutes or so. Replace the battery, and plug the computer back in. You'll have to re-enter any custom BIOS options you had changed previously.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9360, bought in 11/2016, still under warranty.
Windows 10 Home, all updates installed.
Every once in a while (irregular intervals, once a week to once a month), the laptop freezes, then restarts, enters BIOS, and shows a message "Hard Drive not Installed", then there is a status bar showing the diagnostics is being performed, and then the laptop shuts off. After I turn it on again, Windows boots and everything works normally. Otherwise, no problems with the laptop. I don't see any clear association between freezes and what kind of work is being performed or software being run. Sometime happens during heavy load, sometimes on idle.
Things seem to get better after every BIOS update, it doesn't happen for several weeks, but then starts again. Do you think this is just a BIOS problem that may get solved eventually by updates, or is it a hardware issue? Should I contact support and attempt to fix? I imagine it would be very difficult to troubleshoot because the problem is very intermittent. Is this a common problem for other 9360 users?

Hello all great website!

Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.

I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.

So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

I recently used my system image disk to restore on a new (larger) hard drive but now when I look at the hard drive from the computer view it shows my hard drive as being the same size as the old one instead of being the size of the new one. I'm not sure
I'm making much sense so I will post a picture...

Is there anyway to fix this? Does the drive really only have 286 gigs on it?

Answer:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

With my 2009 Seagate 500 GB sata hard drive, the re-allocated sectors count shows 2 bad sectors, in the Ubuntu 10.04 disk utility for the smart data. In this multi-boot desktop PC the XP with a drive monitor program called, Active Smart shows this drive health status as good, including that reallocated sectors count item, so is this not to worry about for now, or what. I do monitor the hard drive temperature, which does stay cool enough, in the seventies up to about 80* F.
Or can this be caused by mixed partitioning methods, since the new way is now align to MiB, and not align to cylinder as it was. I used the GParted tool to create and change partitions when it was set as default to align to cylinder, but then I recently used both my Vista Disk Manager, and the newer version of GParted to re-size some of the partitions, which both now use that align to MiB method by default, which often has near 1 MB gaps between partitions then.

My computer failed to boot a few weeks ago. I took out the C drive and put it in an external drive case on my other computer in order to retrieve outlook emails, bookmarks, etc. The drive is 250 gigs. It only shows an 'N' drive, 130 gigs worth of data, which must have been a partition. The C drive isn't there. Is it corrupted? Will be I be able to retrieve anything from the C drive?  If the drive is corrupted, why does one partition show up and not the other?

Answer:Hard drive doesn't show C drive, but shows the other partition

I had a similar situation. I was able to get data off the drive using a Ubuntu live cd. Burn the iso to cd, put the drive back in the computer and boot to the cd. If you can see the drive in Places then you should be able to get your data off. Please note the "if" and "should".Good luck.

I've connected an external USB drive, but when I go to My Computer it shows it as a network drive. In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?

I'm also seeing some other odd behavior on this computer, and since it may be related I'll mention it. When I first opened my Computer, it showed the same networked drive repeatedly, with every letter from F thru Z. I deleted them all except one, but now every time I reboot, I get a logon connect dialog that asks to reconnect one of them. So with each reboot it is adding back one of the duplicate mapped networked drives that I had deleted. I expect it will eventually end up with all the alphabet letters like it was when I first sat down at this computer.

My main concern is to get the external hard drive to appear where it belongs.
Thanks

I purchased a 960 GB SSD for my computers OS and Programs. Instead of cloning from the HHD to the SSD. I decided to do a clean install on the SSD. Then I formatted the HDD to free it up for data storage. I then re-installed all my other programs on the new C drive (SSD).

But I forgot to unplug the other drives when I installed win 7 on the new drive. This is causing me some problems, with system backup in particular. I normally backup my system image and C drive to an external 2tb drive. But it now defaults to include the F drive in the system image. So there isn't enough drive space for it to complete.

Attached is a screenshot of my Disc Management folder. The C drive is the SSD. F drive is the former C disc which is empty except for whatever happened during the install. Fyi, I've attempted to format repeatedly. And found that the disc manager will not allow me to delete the volume.

How do I get the system/boot/reserved all on the same drive? I'm no expert. So step by step directions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Installed Win 7 64 on SSD. But System still shows on HDD drive.

This is why we should always unplug all other drives during OS install. The boot files were placed on the old HD.

To correct this first mark all other partitions except C Inactive since only the System partition should be Active. Partition - Mark as Inactive - Windows 7 Forums

Next unplug all other HD's, if possible swap the DISK0 cable to Win7 SSD so that it is in the preferred position as long as that is the optimal SSD port on your mobo. This prevents the boot files from again being derailed to a preceding Primary partition if you ever run Startup Repairs or Reinstall with the other drives plugged in.

Now with only the SSD plugged in, run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until Win7 boots and holds the System Active flags.

Now you can plug back in the other HD's, I would move the data off of the old Win7 drive to wipe it with Diskpart Clean Command to clear the boot code and partition table so it can't interfere again, then repartition in Disk Mgmt.

I installed a second hard drive in place of the DVD drive and now when my computer is plugged in it won't charge (it says plugged in, not charging).  I can't imagine that the power adapter isn't able to handle a second hard drive because I've seen plenty of people that said they put two hard drives in their w530.  Is there some kind of driver or setting that I need to reset to make this work again?  I'm on windows 8.1 by the way so a lot of the solutions I've found by googling do not apply to my system.

H Guys,Need help with this one. Got three Dell Latitude C810 Laptops and all three are coming up with the same message. Primary Hard Drive: NoneFixed Optical Drive: Not installed.I am very comfortable around computers / laptops  and thought I knew my way around them until now.The hard drives are all brand new 40GB IDE hard drives that work fine on other laptops (tested them). The laptops have the HD adapters fitted before I installed them in the laptops. Even bought three replacement adapters - just in case. Did not make any difference. When the units power up, they go through POST, spend ages on the splash screen and the error messages come up.The HD and Optical Drive is not registering in BIOS.I read somewhere to take out the battery, unplug laptop from mains and hold power botton for 30 seconds or so. Tried that no luck. Also read somewhere to have the Caps, Num and Scroll keys all on in or before going into BIOS and do the Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B. The Alt+B combination was supposed to be held until the laptop reboots itself. Held them down for almost a minute and nothing happened. Laptop did not reboot. The Alt+F did reset the Laptops Bios to default setting and dates, and nothing more. They still did not register the HD or Optical Drive.I have swapped out HDs, DVD ROMs, with or without battery, Swapped out RAMs - ram memtest on another laptop. They all came back okay. This is really thrown me and I'd realy appreciate some assitance.Cheers guys.KS

A hard drive failed on my 2 yr old Lenovo z585. I bought a new Seagate 1tb sshd and installed it. From another computer I used image burn to make a bootable windows 7 install disc. I assume it works properly, but I don't know. I restarted a different computer with the disc in the tray...and for moment a black screen came up that said 'to install from disc drive press any key'....so i assumed that meant it burnt correctly. Anyway...I have that disc in the computer with the new hard drive, but when i turn the computer on, it never says anything about installing windows. The dvd light flickers and i hear it spin for a while then a Bios type of page shows up and says: Boot menu / app menu1. ata hddo ...etc2. pci lan ...etc3. atapi cd tsst corp cddvdw i've entered the #3 on the list..it just brings up another page for a moment and returns to the boot menu page.i've also gone to the bios boot order section...it had something like 'usb hdd' at the top of the boot order for some reason ? So, I tried putting USB CD and ATAPI CD at the top & restarting each time...neither of them made any difference in getting the install disc to begin. It just seems like it's doing something for a little while...then back to that boot menu screen. Also, it says UEFI is enabled ... i have no idea if it is supposed to be or not,  Can anyone help me with this...i'm ripping my hair out over here...it's bad enough that my not even 2 yr old drive failed to begin with, this ... Purchased my XPS 15 9560 with i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, GTX1050 4GB, and 1080P display back in June 2017. Since installing the 1.5.0 BIOS update, I received a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bluescreen, and now my laptop no longer boots.
Upon powering on the laptop, I'll usually see the Dell POST screen, then it will either go black for an extended period of time before shutting down on its' own, or boot into ePSA SupportAssist Diagnostics and run through the quick troubleshooting tests. These tests will either result in a "Hard Drive - Not Installed" error, or show all hardware passing, but "No boot devices found" before shutting down.
As a computer technician with 10+ years experience in the field, I've already taken the appropriate steps to fully remove all power from the laptop, including unplugging the battery, and reseating the RAM and NVMe SSD in their sockets. The laptop still fails to boot or detect the drive on a regular basis.
Very occasionally I'll see the drive detected in the F12 Boot Options screen, as it shows up as a SanDisk A400 SSD, however, the system still locks up on a black screen should I choose to try to boot from it. I can get it to UEFI boot from a Windows 10 Installation USB, or from the Recovery USB I made with Dell's recovery tools, but only if I boot with the NVMe SSD unplugged from the motherboard. Otherwise the system hangs upon trying to boot.
I've opened up a line of support on the... Read more

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

Answer:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

So I am trying to get this T5400 to boot as a lab machine, and it has and shows all 8 DIMM Slots populated in the BIOS with 4GB sticks (all identical) but under installed memory it only shows 24GB. How can it see 32, but only accept 24? More importantly, how can i make it use the memory it sees?

Answer:T5400 BIOS shows all 8 slots populated with 4GB Ram / only shows 24GB as installed

You have bad ram or mixed ram or mixed rank or ecc and non ecc.

Hi, I recently purchased a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 for my system, and I tried connecting it as a slave to my 40 gig WD.

I have them set up properly, jumpers in place. In bios, and boot-up they register properly. However, when i get into XP, I can't see the new HD's icon in my computer. It shows up in device manager tho.

Help!

Answer:Hard Drive shows up as CD Drive XP

I too had bought a Seagate with the same problem you're having. The solution is they should have sent you a disk with a program called Disk Wizzard 2003 or 2004, now. If you run through this program you will find a section to format the new disk so your system can see it. After I ran this I found it in My Computer then for the heck of it formated it again by right clicking on it and selecting format. Then I formated it NTFS. Now everything is visible.

Hi. I just installed windows 8 on this new 2gb disk as I was having issues with my current disk. My issues are resolved and I c an now boot up with my "old" drive, and now the "new" drive is going to be my backup drive, but when I click on the properties this is what I see. What do I need to do to get this as a full, empty drive?

Thank you.

Don't mess with that, reserved for Windows boot... Go to Disk Management and give a screenshot...

I have a new E525 that I am trying to use with some external eSATA storage. If I boot the system with the eSATA drive attached, the internal HDD is not found and the system will not boot. I get "Fixed Disk: External Disk 0" on the diagnostic splash screen. If I boot with the eSATA drive turned off, and turn it on once the OS has booted, all is well and both internal and external drives are found.Any ideas? I have looked for a BIOS update but have not been able to find one. I've also been through most of the BIOS settings but can't see anything that looks relevant.

Answer:E525 internal hard drive not detected by BIOS when eSATA drive attached

It appears that this has something to do with the hard drive ordering. When the machine is switched on with the eSATA drive attached, eSATA becomes SATA HDD0 (presumably the internal drive becomes SATA HDD1).The only option to boot from SATA drives on the boot order menu in the BIOS is SATA HDD0, so it never tries to boot from HDD1 (now the internal drive).I can see this is useful if you WANT to boot from the eSATA, but I don't........

I'm trying to replace the OEM PATA CDR/DVD-ROM in my recently acquired S50, and can't seem to find a setup configuration which will allow it to boot with an LG SATA DVDR as a replacement. Cabling is not the issue--there's a SATA power connector right there at the drive cage, and the two SATA data connectors in the middle of the motherboard. With the DVDR connected, the system won't boot past the Windows logo screen. Disconnect it, and the system boots fine. I've searched the User Guide and Hardware Maintenance Guides for every SATA reference, and they only refer to a SATA hard drive as an alternative to the PATA hard drive. All references to the CDR/DVD-ROM assume it is PATA. Googling did not produce a definitive answer as to whether this is a permitted configuration (PATA/SATA mix). I'm hoping someone here can say either "No, not possible," or "Yes, I've done it--here's the setup parameters." Mike

Answer:Can S50 BIOS handle SATA DVD drive and PATA hard drive configuration?

Hi Mike "Yes, I've done it" Go to my inputs to this forum in late October for my trials and tribulations with the self same problem. My solution was to remove & refit the CMOS battery as described. I've retained my PATA hard drive & installed a SATA DVD rewriter plus I have access to Setup Utility ( ie BIOS access) whenever I need it. I hope it works for you. Call back if you need to.  Regards Kemar

BIOS: AMD 0401, 5/15/209 v 02.58

I have an IDE hard drive that slides in and out of the computer to connect / disconnect from the IDE cable.

When I had two internal hard drives it booted up using the correct C:\ regardless of whether the removeable hard drive was in or out.

I have now installed a third internal hard drive that contains the C:\ that it should boot from. One of the other drives has a mangled XP Pro OS that does not function well enough to use. So, I installed XP on the drive that I just installed.

Problem is that when I set the Boot Settings / hard disk drive to be the new hd, while the removeable drive is plugged in, it all works the way I want it to. However, if after having backed up to the removeable drive, I remove it for safe storage, the computer will then boot up from the wrong hd. When checking in the BIOS setup, I see that the Hard Disk Drive setting has been changed.

I just want it to stay with what I specified and not change things on its own. Is this possible?

I own a Satellite A100-1AI and have moved from Vista to Wndows XP?

My DVD drive has been discovered as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N but is only showing as a CD drive in the My Computer screen.

Also Device Manager is showing Mass Storage Controller and SM Bus Controller as an unknown (other) device.

Since moving from Vista to XP I have not adjusted my BIOS settings

How do I clear these unknown devices and make my DVD drive see CD's

Many Thanks in advance

Spon

Answer:Satellite A100-1AI shows CD drive but Device Manager shows DVD drive

Just one question;
Can you read and burn CDs?

Regarding the unknown devices:
These devices are supported only by Vista and therefore there are no drivers for Mass Storage Controller.

Check this:
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB83023N0000R01.htm

+After installing Windows XP there could be a yellow exclamation mark by a "PCI Memory Controller" or *Mass Storage Controller* in the device manager.+

_Solution:_
+This device is likely the Turbo Memory former Robson module.+
+This hardware will only supported by Windows Vista.+
+Therefore there is no Windows XP driver.+

Hi, i wouldn't have noticed it if i hadn't gone to install something (Flight Simulator 98, yes i was that bored ) but my LG CD-RW Drive is no longer showing up in Windows. I opened up my case and swapped the IDE cable and checked the power connection but it still doesn't show.

I checked my BIOS and it shows up there and it opens, closes and spins up butWindows doesn't recognise it. Something must have happened recently because about a week ago i burnt a cd.

If anybody knows anytihng that could be the problem then let me know, because i'm totally confused on this one.

Answer:CD Drive shows in BIOS, not in Windows

Do you have a bootable CD? If so see if you can boot from it. That will rule out the drive being faulty and make it a Windows issue.

If it boots from that drive, then remove the drive and if possible the IDE ATAPI controller it is on from device manager and reboot.

The very 1st thing to do is open up the case and reseat your IDE & molex connectors. It's not uncommon for one of these connectors become loose or slightly ajar. Boot up normally to Windows and see if you can access the DVD drive.

If that doesn't work, I would try booting up in safe mode and see if it shows up in the device mangler. If so, remove the device and reboot the system. XP has a large driver database, so it would search for a suitable driver upon reboot.

Put together an i7 win8 PC with asrock killer z97 board. Everything works fine until I took an old samsung sata drive out of a vista PC and put it into this win8 PC. The bios sees this drive but it does not show in windows 8, not in device manager nor disk management. There is no yellow alert in device manager on anything either.

There are three other drives (2 SSDs and 1 mechanical) in the win8 PC and they all show up no problem.

Out of desperation, I change the BIOS drive setting of the samsung drive:

external drive from disabled to enabled
hot plug from disabled to enabled

When I rebooted, the drive shows up in windows! I went and disabled both those settings and reboot, and the drive is still there. I cannot narrow down which of the two settings did the trick.

Can anyone explain why the drive was not recognized at first?

Answer:Drive shows in BIOS not in win8 until...

I ran into this issue with a Dell. In my case, disabling secure boot allowed Windows to pick up on the new hardware and then I could go back and enable secure boot again if I so desired.

Greetings! Subject line says it all! I wish to resurrect an heirloom R31 with a dead hard drive by somehow upgrading the Bios to accept USB drive boot-ups with Windows and Linux. New HD out of question right now. I''m wondering whether there's an Ethernet/internet way of implementing this. I'm not a techie but I'll try to deal with techie solutions if possible. Thanks for any advice! Jim in NYC

Answer:Can R31 Bios Be Upgraded Without (dead) Hard Drive To Allow USB Drive Booting?

Hello and welcome,

I don't know the answer to your question for certain.  I can say that on my almost-as-old R40 it is possible to boot a USB flash drive, but it takes a bit of a tap dance.

Hmm, are you looking to boot a flash drive or an HDD? Either way, this _might_ apply to your heirloom.  Some notes from my old blog:

...Since it looks like a HD, it does not show up in the laptop's boot device menu (F12 during boot), but it does show up as a hard drive deep in the BIOS config.  It would be much nicer if the BIOS would present the jump drive as an option in the "Removable Devices" portion of the boot device menu.

To boot from the formatted jump drive, first install it in a USB slot, then start the ThinkPad and go to the BIOS configuration screen:

BIOS SETUP>STARTUP>BOOT>HARD DRIVE>LEXAR...

Use F5/F6 to move the jump drive up to the hard disk default position (the first).  Save the configuration, and reboot to the jump drive, either by letting it default to HD, or by selecting Hard Drive via F12.  Once the jump drive has been removed (and/or the machine rebooted?) the jump drive will no longer be the default.  It is necessary to go to BIOS each time the jump drive is booted.

Maybe...
Z.

Hey guys I was wondering if it's possible to put in a 3 or 4 tb hard drive into my laptop. The current max it says in the manual is 1 TB, but it also says that for other laptops but is possible to upgrade. I have an m.2 nvme 256 gb and a crucial 750 GB SSD in it right now. They are GPT formatted and it does have uefi, so I don't think it'll be an issue. But I've read about HP limiting sizes in the BIOS.  And also I cannot find this type of connector cable anywhere or what it's called. I do have pictures of it though. Thank you http://s36.photobucket.com/user/ahsfisher/library/?view=recent

Answer:Hard drive size limit in BIOS? What connector is the drive

@djmagnum You're going to have a problem using any drive larger than 2TB because they have to be formatted GPT -- and unless your current drive is also formatted GPT, you will not be able to "clone" it onto the new drive due to formatting differences. Here's a thread that shows you how to check to see what formatting was used for your drive:  http://www.multibooters.com/guides/determine-if-hard-drive-is-mbr-or-gpt.htmlGood Luck

Answer:1tb hard drive shows unallocated & shows error cyclic redundancy error

Hello and welcome Kishor now I have gut feeling that drive night have been damaged by the sudden power failure it could have affected the platters themselves or the controller unit.
Now I think you need to test the drive using this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate or a purely physical surface test see this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run it and see my pic on how to set that up. It tests the actual surface of the platters and to some extent the ability of the read / write heads.

Similar situation to a lot that I have read but slightly different and I just want to make sure.

I have an old computer with 2 hard drives inside it and I want to take the larger one out and put it into my new computer. The old computer has XP installed onto the smaller drive, and I want to put the larger hard drive into a computer with Vista. Not really concerned with having 2 operating systems on the new computer, happy with Vista for now. How do I physically go about it? What do I need to know? Do programs I have installed on the drive need to be re-installed on the new computer? Do I need to re-format the drive? Any help would be great!

I was hoping to transfer some games and uni work across but if I have to re-format is this impossible?

Keep in mind I am an absolute idiot when it comes to computers so any links that you know that could help me execute this operation properly would be appreciated.

Answer:Old Hard drive, new comp

All programs will need to be reinstalled after connecting the drives. You can copy over whatever you like before formatting to get the drive ready for storage use.

The jumpers need to be set correctly and the drive should then show up in Computer. Just click it and copy what you want.

After you have everything you want to keep moved from the drive, use Disk Management to remove the partitions, create nerw ones, and then format the drive. You can choose a drive letter, too.

Right-click Computer > Manage > Disk Management.

windows 8 cant find my hard drive on install. My antivirus pick up a virus and i could n`t fix it so i rebooted my system and now on restart it says ,your system has run into a problem and needs to shut down and it just keeps doing this over and over so i decided to reformat my pc and now my hard drive wont show up..

Answer:no hard drive shows up on the install

Check the BIOS to make sure the HDD is being properly recognized. If it's not, it most likely has failed & will need to be replaced. Try running a HDD diagnostics program.

Answer:Hard Drive shows as ATA not SATA II

look at page 4-16, section 4.3.6 of your motherboard manual. You will see that SATA drives are configured as Standard IDE.So the bios is just telling sandra your configuration in the bios. The drive is still SATA and will perform to SATA specifications. You should really read and digest the motherboard manual. It's there to help you.

My laptop using Windows XP had a virus. The Geek Squad said to erase it clean i.e. put it back to it's default settings. I backed up the files to an external HD and put it back to it's default setting. Now C: drive shows it's almost full but thought I erased everything when I cleaned it. The virus is gone. How do I get my space back so put back what I saved.

Answer:Shows Hard Drive Full It's Not

go to search and search all files on hard drive, once done arrange by size and see what is taking all of your space. report back.

for kicks go to C:\WINDOWS\Temp first and make sure you dont have tmp file eating your space

I am a salesman in a tech department of an office supply store, and I had a customer issue stump me today. She had an external drive with lots of files on it she wanted to access. I took the drive, plugged it into a Windows 7 machine (HP quad), and all of the files appeared, no problem.

But, then I plugged the seagate drive into her new Toshiba laptop (also Win 7), and only some of the files appeared. Missing were all photo files, and many other types. I could not figure out why some were missing and some showing.

I took the drive to a third computer with Win 7, an MSI all-in-one, and behold: files were missing. Now it seemed almost arbitrary. Could it be a matter of some Windows updates not yet installed? Why would the exact same drive work differently on three different computers in regard which files were seen and accessible? None were "hidden" files.

What on earth can cause this?

Answer:Hard Drive shows some files, not all

This doesn't seem to describe a problem with the drive to me, but rather how the systems are looking at the media files.

My first shot would be to reset default file associations on her laptop.
Default File Type Associations - Restore

Some installed media programs can cause issues with looking at media files specifically.
I don't think it would be the disk itself as the files are either there or not and shouldn't be visible on any computer if they are not actually there.

A second question - was this a simple usb external or did it have its own power adapter included?

Answer:my hard drive shows malfunctioned what should

First have you tried different USB ports?Sometimes over time a USB port can through regular use become a bit flaky in its connectivity. Using a different USB port can fix this problem.Have you tried a different USB cable?I assume it is in a caddy was it dropped or jarred? You could try a different caddy. They are fairly cheap to buy (e.g. on eBay).___________________________________________? When everything else fails, read the instructions.

OK..

This is weird.

I have a newer system...(see specs...) and it uses a Sata drive. Then, on the IDe, I have plugged in a 200 gig hard drive.

I leave my computer on at all times, and after I have left it on over night, the drive disappears!

I have desktop links to my drives, and the one that links to my secondary gets the terror inspiring red question mark next to the symbol of the drive.

When I restart the computer....it is there. However, when I let it go to screen saver mode, (which eventually shuts off the screen and turns off the monitor...), god knows when the drive disappears.

ANy ideas or help please??? Thanks friends!

Hello,

A friend of mine has a strange problem. He just bought a Lenovo 3000 laptop with windows vista on it, and a hard drive of 80 GB.
A few days after he bought the computer, the hard drive started to show that it's more and more full, and after a few days it got completely full. But he didn't put anything new on it during these few days. I looked at the content of the hard drive with spacemonger, and it showed that the disk is really full. But when we calculated how much was space was actually occupied, it was only about 40 GB (10 GB vista stuff, 10 GB music, 20 GB pictures, a little bit of documents). I made some space by disabling hibernation and deleting some pics and music, but after a few days the disk got full again.
I reformatted the hard drive (only one on this computer) and installed everything fresh: thunderbird, firefox, office 2007, endnote, ccleaner, nod32. There was 40 GB free. A few days later and no new additions or installations, the hard drive is full again!!!
Anti virus/spyware scan is clean.
What could be the problem?

Thanks...

Answer:hard drive shows that it's full but it's not really

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/capable.mspx

here's your system requirements for Vista OS. So once read it appears you would need a total of 55 Gigs just to run the program. Memory suggested is at least 1 Gig. Is this a new computer with Vista installed? They sure didn't leave much in the way of a hard drive to work with. Have you gone onto the Vista site and downloaded the program they have to check your system specs and determine whether it's a good OS for this computer? Maybe someone else knows something more but that is the best I can do. There are other forums here that deal with Microsoft Vista and you might have better luck posting there. Let us know...Jazz

Hi hope I am in the correct place for this question.I have a toshiba 2595xdvd laptop. Windows ME.I had to manually delete some files to de-install something. When I got done, I had 2 problems: DNS error (which I managed to correct), & now in my computer, it shows disc D, my dvd/cdrom drive as a local disc. The icon even changed. In device manager properties cdrom shows working properly, drivers updated etc, but in performance, it shows there as operating in ms dos compatibilty mode.In device manager, it does not show as local disc D, it still shows as cdrom drive toshiba sd-c2102If I click drive D in my computer, it pops up w a message "D;\ refers to a location which is unavailable"...etc.If I pop in a cd, same pop up.I have powerdvd in this, & I can play a dvd in file mode, if I create a playlist from it, so I believe the drive is good, especially since it worked before the files got deleted. If I pop in a dvd, & go to dvd mode, it shows "no disc in drive" through powerdvd. Eject does not work through powerdvd, but it does from right click menu on drive D. I also have realplayer, that plays a dvd fine, IF thedisc is inserted before I open it. Autoplay will not work.If anyone is wondering what I deleted, & what started all this, it was zonealarm security version 6 point something, which seems to be a big problem all over, look at their boards. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad with a 142GB Hard drive and Vista Professional OS, Office 2007, Diskeeper pre-installed. It's not quite one year old. I have loaded Quickbooks, Adobe Suite 8.1.3, Money, Symantec 360, HP Printer Software. Recently, it has appeared that my Hard Drive has been showing that it was almost full, down to 4 GB free. I ran a disk analyzer on it and it shows I have 42GB of data, operating files, program files, etc. but that the used space on the Hard Drive is at 140 GB. I've gone through and cleaned up all files and am de-fragging it right now but with everything I've done I've only freed up maybe 15 GB of space. Is there some program I have installed that may be holding on to that space or having it show as full but isn't? Has Vista been known to do this?

Answer:Hard Drive Shows Full but Isn't

Hibernate & System Restore would be the pones taking the space on your hard disk.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop Win XP Home edition, 80 gb Hard drive, The hard drive shows 71 gb used and 8 gb free, When I do a count of all used space I come up with 8 gb used and 71 free.

I have ran Windows Defender, Avast, McaFee, and Reg Fix programs all to no avail.

I have defragged, removed file compression, ran chkdsk /f, looked in to all temp folders and removed all files, examined all log files I can not find a problem.

Does anybody have a suggestion for me to try next. I am now thinking I may have a corrupt hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive shows full when it is not.

When it comes to hard drive space you need to understand there is "administrative overhead" for each file on the drive. So there is a difference between drive physical size and available freespace. With 71gb on an 80gb HD, you ARE out of freespace.

There is a very nice tool to show you your actual hard drive status, WinDirStat (freeware).

Look at the screenshot using WinDirStat, note it has been customized to show freespace and I disabled the other "maps."

Notice the difference in the Size of C: and Free Space.

To help free-up HD space:You should run Disk Cleanup in the System Tools menu at least every other month, just do not delete compressed files
You should Defrag your HD, your problem is you don't have enough space to do this, it will fail.
Try a 3rd-party Update Cleanup tool (see suggestion below) to remove the backup files for old updates that you know are OK. I suggest keeping just a year's worth.
Look at Add/Remove Programs for entries on JAVA, remove all but the latest (see comment below)

Update Cleanup tool: Update Cleanup (shareware)
This will remove the backup files use to Remove updates and the Add/Remove Programs entries WITHOUT touching the update logs so Win Update will still see them as installed. Once updates have been on your system for a a long time without any problems, you are not going to be removing them. So you don't need the backup files hogging HD space.

JAVA: If you have JAVA installes, you may note that ... Read more

When I use Disk management, it shows disc 0 with several partitions and a disc 1 with no partitions but 14.91 GB. What is this second disk, and if I delete it, where does that 14.91 GB go?

Answer:one hard drive shows as 2 discs

@tizzy?, welcome back to the forum. Does disc 1 have a lable that tells you what is supposed to do, such as, HP TOOLS?  If not, and you are certain that there is nothing on it that you need, the space will simply become a part of the free space. You can go into File Explorer to This PC / right click on the partition and select Properties.  This will tell you what is on it.

My friend is having a problem with her new laptop that I can seem to figure out. She was complaining that her new HP g60-519wm laptop had a full hard drive already. I knew this couldn't possibly be true because it has something like a 240GB hard drive and she had barely used it. She brought it over and sure enough it showed only 7gb free on the main partition. I started looking thru it checking the size of each individual folder to try and pinpoint what was taking up the space until I reached a problem. Apparently C:\Users\Admin is taking up 178gb of space. But once inside the folder is basically EMPTY... No folder in that entire area is bigger than 75mb and all but one are empty. Huh? How is this possible? The trail goes cold... I ran a hard drive check through the hp diagnostics thing in the cmos and it passed. Is there a fix to this other than restoring the computer? I'm sure there is a lot of info you guys might need to help answer this question that I'm not providing and for that I apologize, I just don't ever have to use forums to find help often so I'm kinda rusty. But anything you need I'll try and provide if you ask for it. I appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can provide. Thanks.

Hello,

I have a Maxtor 500 gig Hard drive. I got it a while back as a gift and never had a chance to use it until I got an external case for it. However, when I first started the HDD up, my computer only registered a 150 gig hard drive. I thought that was odd, so I tried to reformat it, but I kept on getting only 150. I tried atleast 3 different external cases and they all gave me the same result.

Does anyone know how to fix this or have anything that I can try to see what's wrong with my Hard drive?

Thanks.

Hi, I have a windows XP Prof. machine. I turned it of last night, and came home today, tried to turn it on, but wouldn't turn on. Bought a new power supply and comp. turned on and all, BUT while booting, It wouldn't sense the hard drive. This is a good Power supply, and all things are working. It sensed the CD drive, and floppy. I connected the HD to another computer, and the other computer would not boot up because it could not sense the hard drive either. PLEASE help me!

Answer:COMP Cant find Hard drive!

Check the MS/SL jumper on the hard drive. Is the hard drive showing up in either of the computers bios? That is does it show the correct size etc? If the hard drive will not show up in either computers bios it is probably dead. If you go to the hard drives manufacturers web site they usually have some kind of diagnostic program you can download to check the drive.

Answer:installing old hard drive in new comp

Welcome to TechSpot

First off, we do not condone piracy here, which is what you are doing with your cloning.

Apart from that, unless the receiving computer has 100% identical hardware to the original computer, this will never work, because different hardware requires different mobo-drivers etc.

"Verifying MDI data pool" or somthing... then it asks me to boot from a CD!
i think it might be a problem with my mobo but i cant figure out how to activate the HD or whatever... It's plugged into the primary IDE.
