dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

Question: dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this
thanks

Preferred Solution: dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

yesterday my f: drive was fine, it would read disks and everything was great, but today i put a disk in and it wouldnt run, it said the device wasnt ready!!!! i tried a couple of disks so i know its not that. can somebody heLP!??
Mike

Answer:my F: drive wont read my disk

Does it do it to every disk make sure your using proper disk instead of copied as some times a cd rom wont always read a copied disk /try in and let us know/ if yuo are using a genuine disk then ensure a couple of things right click on my computer and then go to properties in the device manager check that the cd rom is loaded and it doesnt have any explanation marks , if all is ok in the device manager then i would say that the cd rom is defect and needs exchanging.
Also if you are using a DVD rom as your F: then some times the DVD rom cant read CDs try others get back to us and let us know

Ok I thought it was a broken floppy drive and apparently I was wrong
I used my floppy drive with a couple disk and it kept saying "Please insert disk"
so I figured maybe my floppy drive was broken so I went an bought a new one and now I see it does pretty much the same thing only this time I see a error that says
"A: is not accessible
No ID address mark was found on floppy disk"
on ever disk I've used
so I'm baffled what could it be

Answer:Floppy Drive wont read a dam disk

Does the drive have a question mark against it in Device Manager? Does the BIOS recognise it? Floppy disks do degrade and are notoriously unreliable, so check one of yours in a known good floppy drive. You have opened up the Write Protect tab, I assume.

I had to reformat my hdrive a little while ago and I backed up all my music + pics to a dvd. However I just tried to read the disk; in my explorer window the status(?) bar recognizes that theres XMB left of YGB but when I open it, its not showing anything :S I've also tried it on my gfs laptop and hers just recognizes it as a balnk dvd. I'd really love to know if there's anything I can do to sort it, it's got 5 years worth of family pics on it and its now the only place I have them :/

Thanks guys

Answer:Disk drive wont read this one disk.

try right clicking the drive with the disc inside and clicking "explore".If not, the disc may be corrupt. In future you should really use a slave hard drive like i do. When you then format the hard drive, it will still have all the files you aquire on your slave drive.

This has got me totally stumped!!!

My other pc has a Sony AW-G170ASV IDE dvd-rw drive but is unable to read a vista dvd for some reason. As i understand, vista uses dual layer dvd so i assumed the drive might not be able to read dual layer, but realised its the same one as mine (which i used to install vista on my pc).

So i thought maybe the drive is dusty or damaged (the pc this drive used to be in was a pile of junk with constant hard restarts & crashes).

However it is able to read gears of war which i assume is a dual layer dvd coz it has 7gb worth of data on it.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Answer:computer wont read EITHER hard drive

Hi,
To begin with - take the new parts out and configure the computer like it used to be before the upgrading. Check all the connections - especially inside the computer. Make sure everything's working in Windows.

Then - as a rule of thumb (at least my thumb ) - you can start putting new parts in ONE BY ONE checking that the computer works before you put the next part in.

I'm not sure whether your new parts are compatible with your computer or not - but'll look into it.

My computer wont read any of my discs on my cd/dvd rw drive, ive tried using a USB portable cd/dvd rw drive and it gives me the same problem (its a different make and model to my origional). It wont load cd's when i first input them and when i click on the drive in "my computer" it says its loading (the green bar at the top shows as much) but it never reaches the end it just get stuck about a cm from the end no matter how long i leave it! i've left it for over 24 hours before in frustration!

click the + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then click the + sign next to SYSTEM
Then click the + sign next to CURRENTCONTROLSET
Then click the + Sign next to CONTROL
Then click the + sign next CLASS
NOW we're done clicking on + signs.
NEXT STEP click on the FOLDER labeled
4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318
now there should be more options on the right hand side of the this
window.
Look for anything Labeled UPPER FILTERS or LOWER FILTERS if any or both
are present right click them. choose DELETE.
Now reboot the machine.
TA DA. your Drives are now listed again!!
I know it sounds scary but I know what I'm doing & it'll bring youre

Windows reloads the defaults on the restart

So i build a newcomputer yesterday.
I decided to use my old SATA hard drive from my computer, it has my OS, and other files on it.
I get everything put in, but when i start the computer it says "no hard disk is detected".

I enter the bios menu, and i notice it recognizes that it is in there, as well as my disk drive.

How come it wont let me load my hard drive, and it doesnt detect it when i start it up.. but BIOS sees that its there?
How do i fix it?

Hi all,I don't know if this is a hardware problem or a Win vista problem.  I downloaded a program to install Betrayal In Antara on vista.  I played the game fine until it was time to load disk 3 and neither of my 2 drives would read the disk.  I though at first it was a bad disk but I tried it in another machine with windows XP and that machine read the disk fine.I have:Windows Vista Home PremiumHP Pavilion Processor:  Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 3.00 GHzMemory 4 GigNvidia GeForce 8800 GTMy two DVD/CD drives are:ASUS DVD E616A3TTSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653N  I think it's weird that I can read disk 1 and 2 and not disk 3 and since it is both of my drives then there is obviously something on that disk that works on my XP machine but not the Vista machine.  Anyone know why?

Ignoring whether it "shows up", what happens when you set your BIOS to boot from the DVD drive first and then restart your PC with the installation disc in the DVD drive?

I've never had any problems with my external hard drive. It's actually an internal with an enclosure, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyway, something strange happened a while ago. I went in to my external drive and see that everything is missing, and the only thing remaining is one folder (out of the hundreds that I had), with no files inside. I went to my computer to check if the data was still there and it read that there was space being used. The same amount it would have been if I had left it there.

I thought maybe it was a bad connection, so I unplugged and plugged the USB cable again. When I did that, the external didn't show up on My Computer anymore. It still makes all the sounds of a hardware being plugged in, and it shows up on the Device Manager (which says that everything is working fine). The same thing happens when I plug it in to my laptop.

Hopefully it's just a bad enclosure and I haven't lost everything inside, but does anyone know any solutions?

Answer:Computer wont read External Hard Drive

First off, take the drive out and connect it as a slave to the desktop and see if the files are still there. Also, here are words to live by...

Remember: Data you don't have at least two copies of is data you don't care about.

Ok.. So i know i should not have tried it but i did.

Basically i was trying to install a version of windows xp on a vista computer. I first partitioned my drive using the computer management tool on vista and loaded up the xp cd to install on that partition. After installing it tried to reboot and now my computer wont boot up at all i get a "disk reads error" press ctrl alt delete.

I have tried recovering it from the recovery cd, but i cant seem to get it working, i really dont want to reset it to the original condition because i have things on there that i would really like to keep.

Anyway.. if you could help me it would GREATLY be appreciated.

I recently built a new computer and used my old hard drive (with a copy of vista on it) My plan was to install windows 7 on it because I did not think vista would load with all the new hardware.

Well it did, but its acting wierd. For example a brand new dvd burner that was working a few hours ago (used it to install drivers and what not) can no longer read dvds at all. Attempts to load the windows installation disk have failed (setting the dvd burner as first in boot order just loads windows) the computer sees the dvd burner and I hear it spin up but it does not even bother with disks now.

I hope its because of combination of new mother board with old windows and not a spontaneous dvd burner death, can anyone help me? Perhaps with a method to check either if its windows or the burner or maybe some possible work arounds.

Answer:New Computer, Old hard drive with old copy of vista/can't read dvds

Did you not reinstall Vista after installing the old hard drive? if not, do that. If you did already, make sure you have Service Pack 1 and all possible drivers.

I have a Seagate external hard drive hooked to my XP computer and it is working and backing up fine. When I initially set up my Vista computer - I simply hooked up the drive with USB port - and opened like an extra drive and copied what I wanted on the new computer. When I went to add some files today - it will not reveal those files and keeps telling me access is denied. I have searched and cannot find solution to this. When I look at properties on the Vista - it shows the space is taken up but will not open to the files that are clearly visible on the XP - most of the research I found talked about security settings and nothing I did made a difference - and the mystery is that it worked just fine the last few times I have done this - over period of 2 months.
Hope I am in the right spot - posted first message today and got a great solution so hoping that someone will know how to fix this easily.
Thanks so much!

Answer:My vista computer will no longer read the data on my external hard drive

Hope this helps someone else.

Hello all,

I have a question for you.

last week I had some problems with my system where most of all the programs stopped working. The computer will start fine and I can surf the web and get my emails, but thats about all. I got out my gateway restore disk and started to restore my system as new again.

Heres the problem. I reboot the computer with disk in drive and tap R as explained and the screen just stays black, then the computer starts to Beep every time I hit the R key. I then tried doing it again, this time tapping the F11 key and system starts to Beep again, with the black screen.

I called gateway and they sent me out another restore disk thinking maybe the one I received was bad. The new restore CD did the same thing. Last week I did have a problem with installing programs where I would get this error message ( C:\windows\system32\autoc.nt. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft Windows applications ) I fixed that problem right away by replacing the Autoexec.nt, command.com and config.nt files back into the system32 folder, must have been done by SP2.

I went into my Bios and made sure the system was booting from CD-ROM yet it still wont read the recovery disk. NOTE: CD-Rom does work with any other program CD I have, Just not the recovery disks.
If anyone has an answer or can narrow down my problem please respond.

Thank You.

Answer:System Wont Read Recovery Disk

Well, let me start by asking this, did the computer, when you got it, come with Windows XP SP1 than you upgraded to SP2 and/or have you updated the bios or any system preferences?

It seems to me that maybe the recovery CD is out of date. Have you tried re-intalling the programs that don't work and making sure there isn't a third-party application corrupting your files?

If you have a Windows XP install CD, try repairing the Windows install with that instead of the Gateway CD.

As for the beeping keyboard strikes, that's probably just a keyboard error that you either press the keys too late or too early, or something else. Try the other things and if that's not the case and you need to get to the CD, we'll work with the keyboard thing.

And also, do you run the CD at startup or while Windows is running? I've never owned a Gateway and only worked on a few, so I'm unsure of when you actually use the restore disc.

I am at a loss as to what to do next with this problem.I have replaced my motherboard and it will not boot to the hard disk. Bios shows the disk is there and it is set as 'Master' and connected to IDE1. If I connect the hard disk to my other main computer, it boots to Win XP ok. If I put an older smaller disk to the new board, it boots up ok. If I put the disk from my main computer to the new motherboard, it also fails to boot. I have moved the jumpers to change the fsb settings on the motherboard, all with differing results but none that let the hard disk boot.Any ideas please........ John

I'm having the same problem as =http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/608570-problem-loading-up-windows.html?highlight=system32%5Cconfig%5Csoftware that guy, and I'm running XP Home edition.

Basically, I can't startup my computer because it comes up with the whole screen giving the options of safe mode, safe mode with networking etc., yet none let me start the computer-the last known good config and start windows normally options lead to a BSOD followed by a restart, and the safe modes give a long list of these-
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\

with different names attached to the end (can post if necessary). All of the websites I've found say to insert the Windows XP disk, 2000, 98 or 95 disk and let it setup or something.

I tried the 'Reinstallation CD Microsoft windows XP Home Edition' CD, which apparently the computer didn't recognise. I tried putting the cd in, turning the computer off then on again. CLosing the disk drive with the cd in it on the loading screen. Putting the cd in then pressing F12 on startup to get to the boot menu then selecting option 4 (The CD option). None worked. I tried the same with a Windows 95 disk and still nothing came up. Am i doing something wrong or has my computer had it?

All advice appreciated

Answer:Startup error, wont read xp disk

If you have a Full Operating System on CD then you can try this:

1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
4. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.
6. When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER (if none was set, leave it blank and press ENTER).
7. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. The entries in your current Boot.ini file appear on the screen.
8. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini file:

Recently my dvd/cd writer stopped recognising blank media and now does not even recognise anything. I cannot system restore as my restore points get deleted after each month and we have only just entered August so I have few restore points. I downloaded the driver update for my drive from click here and used the program to download the updates for my drive 'DVDRW-IDE1008', then when i clicked on upgrade to install the updates it says "Execute command errorA!! 5/20/ 0Flashing is incorrect!!" I have no idea what this means and as this is my only hope for getting my drive to work again i would appreciate any help, or suggestions on how else to fix the drive. Thanks a lot.

Answer:DVD/CD drive wont read disks, & driver wont update

"and as this is my only hope for getting my drive to work again"i can't imagine why you think that, as it was working OK previously. What you are trying to do is NOT a driver - CDs and DVD drives do not require drivers, other than the ones built-in to Windows. What you are trying to do is update the firmware inside the drive - clearl this is not faulty, or the drive would never have worked. If your drive will not recognise anything - I suggest as a first step, borrow a drive from elsewhere and try it out - it seems quite possible your drive has simply failed. Before you do that, just check inside that the cable that feeds it is still firmly plugged in at each end - both the drive and the motherboard - also the power cable.

TLDR: I get the "A disk read error occurred" error but the system disk is readable and checks OK in the recovery USB.

So, I have two hard drives--a terabyte drive with some data on it and a smaller drive with the win7 installation on it--and a USB drive. I made the USB drive into a recovery USB using the instructions here Installing Windows 7 System Recovery into USB Flash Drive | Raymond.CC Blog with the addendum found in the comments. I made a system image of the smaller drive via the control panel and then put the image in the terabyte drive. I then replaced my smaller hard drive with a new drive of a comparable size.

In order to restore the drive, I booted into the recovery USB, formatted the new hard drive with ntfs, made it active, and ran
wbadmin start recovery -version:xxx -items:C: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:C: -recoveryTarget:

where C was the terabyte drive and D is the new drive. I may have the drives mixed up here, but I assure you I had them correct when I actually ran the command

After a reset, I got some generic error so I went back into the bios, and set the new drive to be at the top of all boot lists, and then rebooted. It was at this time I got the above error. I feared that my drive was actually DOA, so I booted back into the recovery. I did a D:;dir and saw that all of my old files did indeed exist, so I figure it was a boot issue. I ran the boot repair utility in the recovery menu and it said there were no errors and I should... Read more

Hi, I recently got married and was given the picture negatives on CD, it comes with a letter saying not compatible with windows Vista, Any one know how I can get these using Vista? it says will only work with Windows 2000 or XP... Cheers

Answer:vista wont read CD files

What were you going to do with the negatives?

I don't see what would not be compatible here.....does the CD have something you must install, like a viewer program, in order to look over the negs?

Are you not able to see the negatives on the CD?

Need more details on what you are trying to do.
Would any of this be what you need to work on? http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_get_windows_picture_and_fax_viewer_in_windows_vista.html

Just about any place that specializes in photo printing, scanning, etc could help you if you cannot work this out yourself.

What I advise you to do, is first make some copies of that disc! Never surrender the only copy you have.......

Have you simply tried your local library or a friend who has an XP computer to look at the negs??

The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is installed on Windows XP but has been replaced in Vista.....there is help at the link I posted.

hey not quite sure what kind of cd rom drive i have but when i open the cdrom/dvd drives portion of the device manager it says dvd/cd rom drives next to "type" and below that it says (standard cd rom drives) next to "manufacturer". im running windows 7 64 bitover the last couple days i have not been able to burn cd's. i use windows media player to burn (always have, never had any problems til now), it would appear to be burning the cd but when it reached 100 percent the cd-r would eject and wmp would give me a message saying that it couldnt be burned. that was happening yesterday and before, now whenever i instert a cd-r i cant even get the drive to read it. it always says there isnt a disc inserted. i put a dvd in it earlier to see if it would read and it read the dvd no problem. i read on a post from about a year ago where someone said something that it might be a hardware issue, not software or driver issue. if that is the case, can the drive be repaired or is it best to buy a new one??

Answer:cd drive wont read cd-r's

Try this: open up device manger, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click on your drive and select properties, Drivers tab, click Uninstall. This will remove your optical drive, don't freak out . Now restart your computer and let it detect the optical drive. It should automatically install it again. Try out and see if the disc gets recognized.

Well its slightly frustrating, as its something i feel like i have to pay for.

Basically a few months ago my DVD drive stopped reading most dvd discs, most notably the ones that required a fast speed, such as games and dvd films. But i noticed cd-roms like installation cd's worked.

Now though, not even that works, its nothing to do with the cd's as i of course have another drive (a cd-r) and all cd roms work with it. Many may say then that something may be wrong with my dvds...Well its when i noticed something was seriously wrong with it when i bought a game and it didnt even read it.

To make it worse, it attempts to read it, takes about a minute, soundsl ike it is powering up (as if installation is about to start, disc icon spinning) then it just freezes the window. To make it worse, if i were to close the window and go to my computer to see the drive, it just has "DVD-RW Drive" as if there is no cd in it.

I try a Windows Update and of course, like it does for every driver it seems, it cannot find one. I assume i have to get it from the specific website.

So i did do so (get it off the specific site) and tryied to go through the methods, and then i created a bootable cd, only to restart the pc, and it attempted to do a firmware update and failed.

So cna anyone help. My complete model number for the drive is below. I really dont want to buy a new drive.

Hi,
I just come across this forum while looking for a solution to my problem, it looks a great place for help!

My pc is a HP Pavillion t850.uk. The dvd writer drive, (a dvd writer 630 i think) has decided to overnight, stop reading any kind of disc. It attempts to but just makes a kind of clicking noise instead of spinning. The drive is recognised by the pc and the device status says its working properly.

Is it fixable or should I just buy a new writer. I do use quite a lot so is it possible its just worn out? I do have an older paviillion base unit which died on me, could I in theory swop the drives over?

That leads to my next question. Whether a buy a replacement drive or can use the one from the older pc, is it a job I can do or should I get a pc repair shop to do it? Id like to try and do it myself if i can, Ive been looking on the net for a guide but havent found much.

Id be very grateful for any help from anyone
Cheers
Rob

Answer:Help! Dvd-rom drive wont read!

Hi

One thing to try if you have a Windows disc or a HP recovery disc is to set the computer to boot from the CD?DVD drive. If your computer can read the disc preWindows it eliminates the problem that Windows is causing this to happen. Obviously do not run any of the recovery just see if it reads it and get out of there.

You can also go into Device Manager and uninstall the drive, exit and reboot and let Windows install it. Check all cables inside the computer that go to the drive.

Do you have installed any third party programs that involve the drive like Nero?

If it still doesn't work it is easy enough to install a new DVD drive and we can help you with that.

Hi,
I've used this forum before and you guys are great :)

I have a Sony PCG-R505GL (Laptop just over 3 years old)
The CD and floppy drives are on the docking station.

Today i was burning media of my computer on CDR.

Then afterwards my computer treats all CD's as blank CD's. When I open up the drive on my computer, it lets me drag files into the folder and burn them as you would normally. If the CD already has data I get an error saying that there is no space to burn.

So if I put in a music CD or game CD it does not read any of the files or music.

If i try to boot the computer off a boot cd during start up it wont work either, as the computer does not recognize the CD/DVD drive.

I can Read and play DVD files fine, its just CD's that wont work.

any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Answer:CD/DVD Drive wont read CD's

This sounds like a hardware or firmware failure. In think you need to take the thing in and let a Sony laptop technician look at it.

But, let me troubleshoot the thing anywayL: You never know, we might get lucky.

OK, answer these questions for me:

What antivirus are your runing on that laptop?
Have you ever used a Sony music CD on that laptop? (I know, seems like an odd question, but there's a very serious problem with some Sony music CDs... they install a rootkit)
Have you checked the BIOS battery? After three years it may be time to get an new one.
Have you installed any PC games that use the "Starforce" copy-protection scheme? (If you don't know, just list the PC games that have been installed on that laptop and I'll let you know if you've been "starforced" or not.)

Ok, answer those questions for me and I'll see what I can do for you.

Hello,

I'm a first time poster with absolutely no other place to turn. I have a Dell Inspirion E1505 with Windows Vista Home Premium. I recently purchased a new game, and my computer simply refuses to read it, along with other CDs. When I look in My Computer, the computer recognizes that a CD is present (the icon changes and says CD-Rom), but if I click on the drive, it asks me to drag files to place on the perceived empty disk. This occurs for both audio and data CDs, but not for DVDs. Before I go through the list of fixes I've tried, whenever I reference my sister's computer, her computer is the EXACT same as mine; her hardware and OS are the same, the only difference being software. Now, the fixes I've tried:

1) I tried the Upper and Lower Filter registry fix, which allowed the drive to read DVDs, but still not CDs.

2) Game works on other computers, including my sisters.

3) Swap CD drive with my sister's computer. The game still does not work on my computer, and still works on her.

3) Swap hard drives between our laptops. When her hard drive is in my laptop, the game runs fine with either drive. When my hard drive is in her computer, the game does not run with either drive.

4) Run both computers in safe mode. Runs on her computer and on my computer with her hard drive; does not run on either computer with my hard drive.

5) Now I'm using a completely different DVD drive in my computer, but still no luck. *EDIT* The game als... Read more

As of late my PC has been going very slow, stuttering, freezing for a minute occasionally, and sometimes when I restart I get a disk read error that requires me to turn the PC off and on again. I ran check disk using command prompt, it got to 12% before it said it had found corrupt files, now it gets up to 37% verification before it finds corrupt files but cannot repair them.

I tried running system repair from the windows 7 disk, but it fails. I've used western digital to run tests on my hard drive, but there were no problems found.

dont know how to fix this now, i've been told its probably the hard drive failing but the scan says otherwise. I can really tell how it takes a lot longer to boot up, log in, even open internet browser takes a lot longer than before.

help appreciated

Answer:Check disk failing, disk read errors, blue screen, computer going slow

Are you running the Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first) burned to CD using WIndows Image burner, then booted to run the Extended Scan? This should give you a definitive diagnosis of the HD, which appears from the Disk CHeck to be failing.

If the HD checks out I would do is try a perfect test Clean Reinstall to the same or another HD to know for sure.

I am having problems with my satellite A30/dvd/cdrw drive (TEAC DW-224E-A), it wont read dvd's but will read cd's and cd rom's. The drive will spin looking for the dvd but it wont find it and when I try to start the dvd via my computer menu it says the drives empty.

I have checked that the drive is enabled and it says that the drive is working correctly. I have also tried original and copied dvd's

It used to work fine but stopped all of a sudden,

Has anyone any tips please!!!

Answer:Satellite A30 wont read dvd's but will read cd/cd rom's

Hi

Try to remove the drive from the device manager.
After notebook rebooting the OS should recognizes the drive again.
Maybe it helps.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255. My cd-ROM has stopped working since I tried copying one of my children's games. I thought I would make a spare for my kids to both be able to play. I tried everything to get it to work again. I even called the company that made the game and told them what I did. They said it was not their software, that they have no copy right protection that would do that. Since then I have made a mess of my computer. I have restored it a million times in the system restore program. It is playing DVD's but no data cd's will play and it does not register any blank cd's. I went out and bought a Memorex external USB disk drive and recorder. I just want to recover my computer to factory settings using the recovery disks I have. The TEAC disk drive in the Toshiba wont read the recovery disks at all and the external drive reads the disk but when it reboots it looks for the disk in the internal and wont registers the USB drive automatically. I'm hoping their is a way to bypass the reboot and just start the recovery or any other solution. I even reassigned the drive letter and have since put it back to original.

Answer:My disk drive won't read my recover disk or any other data. HELP

Check and see if Toshiba has the restore info on a hidden partition and how to proceed using it...most laptop manuf. set them up this way.

HelloI have recently been wanting to burn a movie onto a DVD. I downloaded a burning program and inserted a blank DVD. But my Drive would not read the disk and kept telling me to insert a writeable media. My drive is a: Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R1202I did some research and found out that there are different types of DVD disk. DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW. I did some more research to find out what my drive accepts and found out that it accepts them all. I have heard many things that could be wrong:Some brands of DVD may not be recognised (I am using Tesco DVD's)A DVD ROM driver wont recognise a blank DVD (my driver is a DVD ROM)Are these statements true or is there another reason. Thanks for your help

Answer:CD/DVD Drive Wont Read Blank DVD's

You will NEVER burn a disk using a DVD-ROM drive - it's read only. It certainly won't be able to read a blank disk either as there's nothing on it...:-)You need a DVD rewriter, which will also be able to write to CDs.A new, top brand DVD rewriter is under 20 these days.

Right out of the blue, my C drive wont read discs, music, software or otherwise, this has never happened before, before posting this I have run all kinds of virus programs, any suggestions? I am on Wondows XP.....

Answer:Drive Wont Read Disc's

The C Drive is a hard drive. If you can't read a disc in an optical drive that is another matter. Please list a lot more specifics like what drive you were trying to access, etc. See below.

Hello, have you checked the BIOS chipset drivers yet ? Run free program of Speccy : Speccy - Download . Get free version, look at the motherboard information and take note of Bios information, you may need to go to the motherboard manufacture or the computer manufacture, get latest Bios chipset for your computer and motherboard type, and if needed , go ahead and install new ones, you may have a driver issue or you may not, I got my chipset from my computer manufacture, which would be my first choice. See if this helps out, failing the chipset drivers being bad, with all the other diagnostics you have done, it would seem as if the drive is having hardware issues.

you said " I have the Hard drive set as the master and the new Burner (a Liteon) and Poineer Dvd Rom as the slave" you can have only one set as slave...if the second is on a second cable it needs to be set as master and put on the end connecter of the cable

My mates DVD drive wont read COD4, he has tried on other website, but I thought I would give this one a go :cool here is what he said

My DVD drive does not see or read the COD4 DVD, so following info from Activision?s site, and several forums?.

I updated all drivers; I also found applied all firmware updates, from the Compaq UK website, including the Bios.
I could not find a firmware update for this particular HP OMD DVD drive, plenty of others from JLM but not this specific model.

I have applied the DMA settings recommended by Activision.

In desperation, after following one particular thread from a DVD user group, we went out and bought a brand new DVD drive, a Samsung.

This was because one user was told, your drive is too old go buy a new one.
Needless to say it did not work.

Apparently COD4 is not compatible with some DVD drives, but I cannot find a definitive list.

COD4 uses SecuROM protection which means you can?t use any software that can emulate a disk drive.
Old versions of Nero are most likely to fall foul of SecuRom, but it is not running on this PC, nor any other software emulation.

The spec below is for CROW?s PC.
Compaq Presario 6520UK Desktop
Windows XP SP3
Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 2.0GB Ram
ATI Radeon 2400
SoundBlaster 24

JLMS DVD-ROM LTD-166S

Any ideas?

Also his disc plays on my pc so it isnt the disc.

Please help

Hi ive got an MSI DR8-A2 8*DVD writer and i have had it for about 3 mnths
recently the dvd drive has stopped reading and writing dvds but will still read cds
i have updated the drive firmware and tested it in two computers and it shows the same symptoms in both any ideas what could be causing this?

both computers were running windows xp home SP1.
cheers

Answer:dvd-rw drive wont write/read dvd!!

If the drive fails to read DVD's in two computers then its toast - drives fail all the time. If its only 3 months old you should be able to return it under warranty.

Well, that isn't strictly true, it will read one and only one of my disks.

On every other disk I insert, I go into the Drive, and it says 'Please insert disk into drive D:' when I already have a disk in it. But with this one disk, which is only a game, it recognises it. I don't know if this is the problem, but I have left that disk in for a while, without taking it out even when I turned the computer ona and off.

Can anyone help?

Answer:dvd drive wont read stuff.

It could well be that the CD laser has given up the ghost but the DVD equivalent is still OK.The only driver you need is the generic Windows CDROM driver for all such drives, including CD, DVD and rewriters.

Hi
I have been given a sony vaio vgn fe31z laptop without a hard drive and have fitted a new driver and installed windows xp home edition from a cd I had kept from an old pc which has sincew been recycled.
Over the last few days I have installed all the windows updates up to sp3 (which was a monster job) as well as the utilities and drivers from the sony website for my model.
There are no problems in device manager and the system appears to be working ok apart from one thing - the dvdrw drive will now not read dvds or cds.
I have done a bit of research on this as it is a known issue with xp, but have not been able to solve it. I have done the folowing;
tried to find the other drivers unsucessfully
tried to apply a fix which involves editing the registry but the upper values and lower values are not there. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/page-2425501450.html
Run microsoft fixit - which doesn't.
Uninstalled and reinstalled it.
I have run out of ideas and am now tearing my hair out.
I know the drive works as I used it to install windows but since that I have installed hundreds of updates from windows updates, so I don't know when it stopped reading disks.
Windows tells me it is a Matshika dvd ram uj-850s but it states on the drive that its a panasonic uj-850.
Your help would be most appreciated

Answer:DVD Drive wont read disks - help please

When you used the drive for installing XP I bet it was from a CD and not a DVD. Some drives have separate lasers for the CD and DVD operation and it may well be that the DVD section is not working. Check again with both a CD and a DVD, I know you said that it is not reading CD's but it is worth another try. Probably a new drive is needed.
From this link it seems that your DVD drive is dual layer.
