HDD - Sata Port 2 Device Error, Press F1 to continue on start up??

Question: HDD - Sata Port 2 Device Error, Press F1 to continue on start up??

Hi All,

I have been given a 3TB Seagate HDD as the original owner believed it to be faulty. So I thought I would take a look after installing it I get this error on boot up.

'Sata Port 2 Device Error, Press F1 to continue'

After continuing to windows its not visible in disk management.

It is visible in the bios menu though.

Any ideas? Is it a throw away?

Cheers Brizee

Preferred Solution: HDD - Sata Port 2 Device Error, Press F1 to continue on start up??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: HDD - Sata Port 2 Device Error, Press F1 to continue on start up??

I would run a few disk checks on it - starting with chkdsk in cmd. Or the Seatools: SeaTools | Seagate

I need some help. I just finished building this machine and I'm getting this error each time I start up. Let me give you my current config:

ASUS P5K-E WiFi-AP
160GB ATA/100 Maxtor (OS is loaded on this drive WinXP Home SP2)
160GB S-ATA WD
DVD-RW S-ATA Pioneer
CDRW IDE
1GB DDR2 533 x2

Preface:

This MBO has 6 S-ATA connectors on it for setting up a RAID0, 1, 5, or 10. The MBO manual states; "when using the connectors in standard IDE mode, connect the primary (boot) hard disk drive to the SATA 1/2/5 Connector. Refer to the table below for the recommended SATA hard disk drive connections."

The table reads as follows; Connector SATA1/2/5/6, color; Red, Setting; Master, Use; Boot Disk. Connector; SATA3/4, color; Black, Setting; Slave, Use; data disk

My Setup:

I currently have the BIOS set so the SATA connectors are in IDE mode. (I tried to set them in SATA mode under this config and that started a whole other set of issues. I put it back to IDE)

The two SATA devices I'm using are connected to SATA3/4. I connected this way because my thought is that neither one of these drives are the Boot drive and if your not a boot drive your a slave. (this could be where the issue is)

The following 2 drives are connected via the IDE connector on the MBO.

The 160GB ATA/100 Maxtor has the OS loaded on it and the jumper is set to Master. It is connnected to the primary/black IDE connector. In the BIOS I have this drive set as number 2 in the boot priority.

The IDE CDR... Read more

Problemi1 wrote:And now we get back to the original problem. I have an official version of windows 8.1 downloaded and formated to an 8 gb usb stick by the official program from the official microsoft websites. And just to clarify, this works with my pc. Now when i try to start the installation in the HP computer, it promots me with "the selected boot device failed. Press enter to continue" and im given option to "boot manager", "boot manager"(yep 2 times) and "boot from EFI file" which faces the same issue when i try to manually boot the device.Hi, Sorry to hear that. If you see boot manager and boot from EFI file but nothing else, the USB thumb drive is not detected. Please, perform the steps above- ensure the Win 8.1 USB stick is intact and working- disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy mode- save the changes and proceed with F9 mode. If it still doesn't work, please take screenshots and attach them in the next post.Hope this helps.

When I go to turn my computer on there's a black screen with a blue notification box that says"The selected boot device failed.press enter to continue"

Answer:The selected boot device failed.press enter to continue

Hello @Prburt0809 Welcome to the HP Support forum. The issue appears most likely due to incorrect BIOS settings re. Secure Boot and Legacy Mode. Please, perform some basic hardware checks 1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button2. Power it on.2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one 3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test. This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1 If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check. Let me know the test results. 4. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F10 for BIOS setup options.Navigate the BIOS and find the option to reset to default/load default settings. Do so and eventually exit the BIOS exiting the settings. This should enable Secure Boot and disable Legacy mode settings. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. I'd like to help you solve your issue but I need some clarifications: So i had a disc error and had to switch out my hard drive So, you had faulty HDD (disk) - what you mean you switched it - 1) you did install a brand new HDD - empty oneor2) you you took the HDD from another PC and placed it in this machine ? What you describe above sound like second scenario... but I need clarification. In all cases, it's best to use HP Recovery media to restore the computer to factory default condition. Looking forward to your confirmation and I will provide you with next steps.

This is what happened it is a Dell Dimension 4600 with window XP Home SP2

Was trying to help a lady get her printer going, it kept saying it was open when it wasn;t but that isn't the problem now this is

There was a plugin in the wall behind her printer, I asked her if that cord was her printer and she said yes, I unplugged it and the printer and her camera and computer all went dead, it wasn't her printer cord it was the cord to the surge protector she had and it was all plugged into that. So I thought ok no problem.I plugged it back in and went to start the computer and it was dead, I mean dead didn't even try to start. I checked all the cables and surge protector etc and plugged the computer in an outlet by itself and it would not start. I said it is probably your power supply. I had another power supply at home so I went and got it and plugged into the motherboard and the other wire to the mother board and one wire to the harddrive. I plugged in the new power supply and the computer took right off. So I told her she would have to get another power supply, however with the new powersupply when the computer came on it came on to a black screen with white letters and said something to the effect of

Can anyone tell me what this means? I get this message everytime I turn on my computer. I just hit F1 and Windows 7 starts. I do have a 256gb SSD where Windows resides. Wondering what I can do to get rid of this annoyance.

Thanks-

Answer:SATA Port 1 Device Error message

Look on your motherboard for SATA port 1. Is this where your SSD is plugged into? Or is there another HDD plugged in there? Either way, there is an issue with whatever device is plugged into SATA port 1

My CPU fan is acting funny., BIOS shows that it runs between 90-250rpm and 150rpm on an average,. I've removed it, cleaned all the dust and replaced and it worked fine at 1500rpm for about say 15mins., I started a game for stress test and problem resurfaced in the middle of game. Video card is problem free absolutely. I get this "CPU fan error Press F1 to resume" everytime i boot up. CPU is overheating (temperatures raising upto 85 degrees). I use a 4pin connector for cpu fan port on the board. (Q-fan is disabled in BIOS, turning it ON also dint help me).

PC Specs
Asus M2N MX SE PLUS
AMD Athlon X2 64 4600+
Transcend 2GB DDR2
ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB
Cooler Master 390W PSU
Seagate 250GB SATA HDD
BIOS AMI v602

Games are lagging as soon as the CPU temperature hits 59C. Fan speed gets low starting at this point. Once this temperature reaches 69C, rpm falls down to as low as 200 from usual 1500. I checked all the connections, everything is fine. This board is replacement one i got last yr from asus service center. So its around 1-2yrs old. This is not the usual false warning which can be turned off in BIOS. I've checked fan speed myself and its rotating/stopping/rotating/stopping for temperatures >59C and once CPU cools down to some 58C rpm is back at 1500. I dint get a reply from asus tech support yet. I did try resetting the BIOS but that dint help

If someone completely understood where the problem lies, please do help me

Thanks

Answer:CPU fan error! Press F1 to continue

Your fan speed should be over 2000rpm and you cpu around 40c.
I suggest getting a new heatsink the old one maybe failing.
Make sure you use the correct amount of thermal paste when reinstalling.

That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD. It could point to a hardware problem. It is definitely not a software problem. I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Hello, Just got a new Lenovo Helix on Friday. Last night after starting the maching I received this error: Keyboard Dock Fan Error Press Esc to continue I updated the Helix BIOS version as per this post: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/Helix-keyboard-stopped-working-or-fan-e... The problem is that I cannot implement this firmware update: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035554 Without getting this message: This tool and EC firmware mismatch, or communications error is happened. I have tried the re-set button and it doesn't do anything. They keyboard dock is dead for all intents and purposes. No power no nothing. The tablet portion seems to be working fine but no input from the keyboard at all. No little red light on the "Thinkpad" logo. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Is the battery for the keyboard dead? I keep thinking that I get the second error message because the tablet cannot connect to the keyboard becasue there is no power. I've called Lenovo help but I'm at work and they took too long to even get to the problem...I had to get back to work. They just recommended performing a system update. Did I just get a dud keyboard? I didn't want to have to go to the trouble of returning this as I had it set up exactly how I wanted it (software, etc.) and I ordered it online. Can anybody help with this?

Hi,
I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. You can follow the steps below:
Drain the residual power of your computer and recaliberate the battery by following the steps below:

Power off your computer.
Remove all the external peripherals (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer.
Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer.
Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power.
Release the power button
Keep the battery out for atleast 2 - 3 hours.
Then insert the battery and charge it overnight with the system powered off.
Insert the battery in and connect the AC adaptor.
Then power on the computer and see if it works.

If the issue still persists, you can update the BIOS of the computer.
Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Click on the below link: http://dell.to/Th8z4k
Click on “Download File”.
Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
Click on “Download Now”.
Save the BIOS on your desktop.
Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

I tried formatting my hard drive using the provided software from the company I bought the computer from, but it did not install correctly. Now there is no Windows or any files of Windows showing up on my hard drive whatsoever.

Whenever I pop in the Windows CD to try and repair or re-install, I get an error that states "Disk Boot Sector is to be modified! Press Y to continue, any key to abort" and once I do, it seems like the Windows options are about to come up, but then it just shuts down my computer. Any thoughts or possible fixes? I'm not sure of the correct location for this thread so I put it here. Thanks in advance!

Answer:ERROR: "Disk Boot Sector is to be modified! Press Y to continue" then crash?

I'd try a bootable hard drive diagnostic that's available from the support website of the manufacturer of your hard drive. That'll let you know if the hard drive is failing and we can move on from there.

After performing a fresh install of my O/S WindowsXP MCE2005 , I recieved a prompt upon bootup that I must press F1 to proceed or F2 to enter setup ? I only have one internial H.D. and one externial USB H.D. a Seagate FreeAgent 320G.B.. My H.D. in the BIOS is set to Autodetect/AHCI. I have read that after a re-install of this system I have to change the BIOS setting for the H./D. to Combination ,however when I try that I recieve a warning that my system may not be able to detect the H.D.,so Iam leaving it alone since all is working well except for the minor inconvience of pressing F1 during bootup.Iam curious since I have no additionial H.D's and none located in SATA 1,2&3 if turning those off would have any ill effects on my system or any other H.W ? By default the setting in the BIOS is ON !Any help or input would be greatly appreciated, thanks to all whom reply. Take Care NicRic FYI> PC is a Dell XPS400 2.8GHz Dual Core Pentium D w/3 G.B. of DDR2 RAM,ATI PCI-E Graphics and an ATI TV Wonder TV tuner card PCI ! (I know Pentium D's are garbage)

Answer:Must press F1 on bootup (SATA error) ?

I am not familiar with the option you mention (combination). That said, could it be that you have an IDE optical drive and that is hanging the boot? To test this if you have an IDE optical drive try removing the optical drive from the boot order, or at least setting it after the HD.

Hello:
As you probably know the issue is that the HDD shows as removable device in the taskbar.

I have the lastest drivers available from Asmedia and it does not remove the icon from the taskbar.

I also try the MS register fix
My internal SATA device appears in Devices and Printers and in the - Microsoft Answers

1- Since the sata port is not Intel , would the register location be the same for the proposed solution above to work?

2- I tried channels 0..5 , should I try any other number? The solution says that the channel in device manager it is not always the correct one. Under device manager , general tab it displays "Location 0 (Channel 1, Target 0, Lun 0)"

I will appreciate in suggestion.

thank you

Answer:HDD on Asmedia SATA port shows as removable device

Hi,

This is normal if you have AHCI enabled as AHCI supports hot-swapping.

If AHCI is not enabled, and you have an intel chipset motherboard IIRC, you need to install the Rapid Storage Technology drivers. I've not proven this myself as I always have AHCI enabled.

Answer:Press F1 to continue

Usually when I see this, it's the BIOS with some minor error, like it can't see a hard drive when the setting says there's supposed to be one. I'm surprised it doesn't spell it out.

You might have lost some hardware, like your optical drive. Start pulling stuff off the motherboard and see if the error goes away. Also disable everything you don't need in BIOS. It's a good idea to do that anyways.

Does anyone know how to program something like this:

cout << "Hello, World!" << endl;
cout << "\nPress any key to continue...";

I don't know how to make the program pause then continue by pressing any key. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Nic

Answer:Press any key to continue...

I don't know how to do it in C/C++, but in QBASIC you make a loop which goes around until a key is pressed. So somthing like this:

Code:

PRINT "Press any key..."
DO WHILE $INKEY = ""
LOOP
PRINT "Continuing"

Using the same principle you could probably do the same in whatever language you're using.

...maybe not.I'm trying to flash my mobo BIOS so that I can upgrade my processor. I've got an MSI, so I use their 'Live Update' facility to get the precise BIOS revision identified and downloaded. When the final warning comes up about the dangers of flashing your BIOS unless you 'really know what you are doing' (I like that bit, real confidence booster), it prompts "press any key to continue" with the flashing procedure. My PC hangs at that point (or maybe just dosn't detect any key being pressed). End of my attempts to upgrade the processor for the time being.Same thing happened to me when I installed a new Maxtor hard drive: made a CD using their utility for Set Up and Partitioning, but the process kept hanging this side of the POST.Any ideas why I keep running into these brick walls with the keyboard?

Answer:'Press any key to continue...'

Do you have a USB keyboard? If so, that is likely the problem.

During my usual morning start-up, I got a dos screen with a message and to press F1 to continue. Everything booted fine after that. I ran malwarebytes, backed up my data files on a flash drive and looked into the event logs to see what might have happened. Unfortunately, I didn't even know where to look in the event logs except the administrative events which showed nothing critical.
I wish I had paid more attention to the original dos screen message. I'm now afraid to shut this puter down and wondering what happened. Appreciate any input........

Hello,

I built my latest computer about a month ago and it has run great. However, each time I have to start the computer up either from rebooting or because I shut it down hours before, it always asks me to "press any key to continue ..."

Here is what is on the screen:

ODD0: ATAPI iHAS424Y
ODD1: ATAPI iHDS1185

Press any key to continue ...

*******
If I do not press any key withing 5 seconds, then it gets stuck on that screen and message. When it gets stuck, I have to hard shut down and restart my computer. I have built 7 computers since I started building them and this has never been an issue. I am sure there is a fix but I have searched and not found one.

Thank you.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate

I hope I am in the correct category for these two questions. When I start my computer I have to hit F1 in order to contine. Once I am signed in I have a message telling me to alter the date and time, which has set itself at 31 Secember 1999. I duly obey and new date and time is showing in bottom right. I was defragmenting my drive with Perfect Disk 8 when I got a blue screen. I followed some Microsoft troubleshooting tips, and it told me to run the disk error checking utitlity on My Computer>C:\ Drive (right click)/Properties/Tools/Error checking. So I did an error check. The problem was that it got stuck at 46% at Step 4/5. I restarted my computer and when it said 'Press any key to stop error checking' I pressed any key, but it didn't stop error checking. I tried this about 10 times. Same result. Then I entered BIOS Setup utility and selected 'Load Optimal Defaults' and saved changes and restarted. Then, I got an error that said NTLDR is missing please restart. So I found a solution on this site, which told me to use the XP bootable disk. When it says 'Press any key to boot disk' I press any key, and guess what? Nothing happens! It loads Windows XP bootscreen then, it goes to the disk checking which I scheduled (which I still freezes at 46% and can't be aborted)I have tried 3 different keyboards. Please help!System Specs... Have you fitted the NEW DVD drive you were mentioning on a previous thread.
Did the problem exist before or if you have fitted it only since then.
If you have fitted it is the drive working OK.

Check when you do get a boot the time and date displayed on the lower right corner of the desktop, especially after the computer has been off overnight.
It can be caused by a flat CMOS battery
Also check the boot device priority in BIOS.

If for instance you have the first boot device set for a floppy drive, but the computer does not have a floppy drive, that can cause it OR is the boot priority set for a CD drive that is NOT present

So for boot priority set DVD first
the HDD with Windows - if you have more than one hard drive as second
USB third if an option and if it is available also set - check other boot devices.

Hi,

This weekend I was on a website and IE suddenly went blank and a windows dialog box will pop up with "You must press yes to continue". I pressed yes once and I was asked to download a file whose name I failed to write down (like an idiot) but I wrote down the website address: 209.190.5.106. I clicked cancel, closed Internet Explorer and did "all the right things". I ran AVGFree. It found 8 infected files. 7 were "Java/ByteVerify" and the other was "Trojandownloader.Generic.SSX". AVG was unable to clean or remove because the files were "Archived". I looked at the location of the files and all were in the Temporary Internet Files, so I ran "Disk Cleaner", then explored and wiped out what disk cleaner missed.

I ran AVG again and I was clear. I thought I was good. Then yesterday, the same thing happened. I did NOT click yes. I closed IE, ran AVG (10 files this time). Then, because AVG doesn't have a very good virus descriptions page, I looked "ByteVerify" up on Symantec's website. And what Symantec described for this virus sounds nothing like what I am experiencing. Just as a precaution, I downloaded all the critical updates for my computer (only 2 I didn't already have). I deleted ALL the temp folders, ran MSConfig to check my start-up files, etc. When I re-ran AVG again I was all clear.

Except that today it happened again. I didn't get the "You must press Yes to cont... Read more

Answer:Boot Failure - Press any key to continue

Perhaps its a bad installation media. Try create an alternative with a 4GB USB thumb-drive instead:

1. Download the appropriate ISO here
2. Write it to the USB thumb drive using this
3. Boot from USB thumb drive and install

We went to do the weekly shop Came home had a refreshing cuppa booted up and all was normal So what was that all about?

Either the lead for the Keyboard wasn't fitted properly, or there just wasn't any/enough power to "see" the keyboard correctly.I agree, it IS stupid... Hi

Every time my laptop goes to sleep doesn't wake up until I push power button twice. First to shut down and second to go on then I get this message:
Warning: Resume failure
press any key to continue

Please need help to solve this problem
Thanks

Answer:Satellite A50 - Resume failure, press any key to continue

Usually bad drivers or a flat battery causes resume failure.

You could try a System Restore back to a date when Resume was working properly, and update the drivers for your USB Devices.

If thats no help, then maybe its time to backup your data and run Recovery from your Recovery Discs. Its good to do this once a year anyway to keep the system fresh and error free. Windows tends to become slow and errornous over time, due to power looses, viruses, badly written software etc..

Hi
I have an Equium A60 that is coming up with "Resume Failure and Press any key to continue" when I turn it on. This occoured after the battery ran out and it shutdown. Pressing any key does nothing.

I can get into the BIOS if I am quick before the message comes up, and it is set to Boot Mode, not Resume. I have tried resetting defaults, removing Hard Drives and booting from other devices, but it doesnt seem to get that far, so I canot perform a BIOS update either.
Ive had the machine apart looking for a battery I can remove or a reset button I can press, but I wasnt able to find anything.

Is there anything I can do, or is it totally dead for good?

Please help me! Its a second hand laptop, but I have only had it a week! ;)

Simon

Answer:Equium A60 - Resume Failure and press any key to continue

Hi

Could you please check if the HDD was recognized in the BIOS!
If it war recognized you should try to install a new OS.
Boot from the CD by pressing the C button immediately after notebook starting.

You could also try this:
Just remove the HDD slot cover unplugged the HDD and plug it back, turn on the laptop.
If the same message will appear just press the space bar and check if the OS will boot from the HDD.

I have a problem with my satellite A60.
I have had the computer for about a year and a half and have never had any serious problems with it of any kind. However last week the keyboard started to fail, first with only a few keys out, then the full keyboard.

This never bothered me much because I am quite familiar with Toshiba computers. So I plugged in an external keyboard and I was back in business.

I used it fine up until now but I put the computer into hibernate last night and when I got up this morning it says "resume failure and press any key to continue".
I press keys and nothing happens, it just stays at that screen. I try to access BIOS by pressing esc when I turn the computer on and priority is set to BOOT not RESUME, hover it wont let me highlight it to change it anyways. The computer wont let me boot from cd. Basically its just stuck at that screen and thats it.

I am wondering if there is another way around this or is my computer finished for good. I was running linux fedora the time of the crash.

Answer:Satellite A60 Resume failure and press any key to continue

Sounds tricky but it?s not unresolvable..
This sounds strong like a hardware issue, but I will not say it for sure.

That keyboardthing can be a defective keyboardcontroller, because your error description is describing a similar case which I had with my machine.
I send the machine to my local servicepartner and they exchanged my mainboard and the keyboard and after the repair the error, I had, never bothered me again.

Just a little question: does some fluids come on your keyboard?

nice weekend

Hi,

I'm having a problem with the HDD (or other component) on a computer, and I'm wondering if anyone would be able to assist me. So, my friend's computer would no longer start up, and he asked me if I could fix it, as I fix computers often, and build my own, etc, so I said sure. When I first got the PC and tried finding the problem, I decided it was the HDD, as the HDD had the "click of death", and was not working or showing in the BIOS. I also put my own HDD in his computer and took it all the way to the "choose partition to install Windows" portion of the Windows 7 set-up, and all seemed fine, but as I had data on the drive I stopped there.

So he ordered a new HDD, as I told him that's the part he needed, and it just got here the other day, and upon installing it, the computer would not recognize it, and was giving me the "Primary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Continue", so I took the drive out of his PC, put it on my main PC as a slave drive, and then ran chkdsk, which turned up no errors. After that I decided to try a different SATA cable, in a different SATA port, and it finally started up fine, and went through the Windows 7 install, but not without problems.

During the first try installing Windows 7, when it got to the point where it needed to restart the computer, it did, but when it came back on, nothing displayed on the monitor, but the computer was running, so I had to hold the power button for a Hard Shut Dow... Read more

Answer:Primary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Continue...

The SATA ports should be backward-compatible, but they are not always. It is a matter of the board sensing the correct drive and adjusting the speed. Some boards don't do the sensing well with some drives and the jumper needs to be used to set the speed manually. If data is requested faster than the drive can supply it, you get corrupted data that looks to the machine just like read errors.

Recently I decided to try out linux mint. I created a live cd and installed mint as a dual boot with Windows XP Home Edition SP3 on a single hard drive. After installing mint every time I boot up the computer I got the message “boot failure press any key to continue” pressing a key just makes the message repeat. If I reboot and press f12 “BOOT PXE” I could get into the GRUB boot screen and choose what OS I would like to use. After being unable to fix the boot failure problem I deleted the mint partition and merged it with the XP partition.
I still get the “boot failure press any key to continue”screen and I am still able to use f12 to get into xp-it now goes to the welcome screen from whence I am able to access XP-which works fine. I have used the windows install cd recovery console fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk /p /r and am unable to fix the boot. I have all of the data from the hard drive backed up, however I would rather not do a reinstall. Does any one have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank you in advance.

Have you checked out the boot.ini file? I don't have any experience with dual booting with Linux, but with different Window OS's you can adjust it there. It might be Window's doesn't like Linux at all and they just don't want to get along.

Intel DG965WH
intel dual core 2.1 ghtz
ddr 5 video card
2 hd's 40gb and 500gb

win7 ultimate

After the bios screen I get the following message:

Problem with hard drive, press enter to continue

I press enter and windows boots and both hard drives work flawlessly. If I disconnect the 5oogb the error no longer appears and if I try disconnecting the 40gb hd and boot the 500gb by itself the error re-appears, so I think we can safely say the problem lies with the 500gb hd...

But the hd works fine. I have tested it with the seagate tool and after a long scan the drive passes. This also happens with the western digital diagnosis tool, again using the long scan. However, the SMART status states that the hd has failed??

This is my stepsons PC and he says he has had this message since he installed the 500gb hd and he chose to ignore it. This message he has been getting for about 15 months!

At first I thought it might have been a psu problem as he only had a 250w psu and a 20 pin connector going to the mobo. But I have replaced the psu with a 400 watt and I still get the message:

Problem with hard drive, press enter to continue

Now I'm stuck - the HD passes these tests should he just run the hd till it dies? Is there anything wrong with it (how can I be sure?)

Your help is much needed here - i've ran out of ideas

thanks in advance!

Answer:Problem with hard drive, press enter to continue - plz help!!

1: Typically, this is a drive failing error. Back up your data.

2: Another possible, but possibly too late solution would be to reboot, tap f8 as it starts and choose "last known good configuration".

3: Finally, you can use System Restore and restore the PC back to before this error started.

If the last 2 steps fail, see step 1. Buy another drive that's the same and migrate to the new drive and get ahead of it.

The day before yesterday, I turned off the PC using Windows Vista Menu > Shut Down. When I turned it on, after the HP logo, it shows a black screen with the following error: No bootable device -- insert a boot disk and press any key. I already tried to Load BIOS Setup Defauts, did Memory and Primary Hard Disk Self Tests (they were OK), changed the boot order (F10), but the error message persists. I did the reset procedure, which I unplugged the battery and the AC charger and keep the power button pressed for 6 seconds, but it didn't worked either. I tried the (F11) Recovery Mode, but the error message persists (I do not have the recovery discs to boot from the disc). I tried to boot from Windows XP disc but it stays forever on the Press any key to start from the CD message. I tried to boot it using another OS CD (Ubuntu) but it asks to update the BIOS. I do not have Vista DVD (it did not come with the PC). What else can be done? How can I solve this problem?

Hi - Same thing happened to me one hour ago. I have Vista as well. Don't have the boot disk neither.. The quick test of the disk came out successful, but the complete test doesn't want to start... What happened with yours? Did you manage to fix it? Thank

ok... idk how this happened but one day my computer froze and i had to manually shut it down... now it is saying this message and will not start up. im sure some of you guys are familiar with this because i have read some of the posts. please help!

Answer:No boot device available press f1 to retry press f2 for support?

It appears there is a problem with the hard drive. It's probably dead or dying. If you have data on it that you want to save, you could place it in a USB external enclosure or an inexpensive docking station (if a SATA hard drive) and try to access the files with another PC.

I'm trying to install W2K on a pc that had Windows ME previously. I managed to get rid of ME but cannot install any os now. I boot from the dvd rom when trying to install and it starts, but when I get to the screen that says Press F6 for 3rd party....or raid...something (sorry can't remember) it then goes to a message that says Line 7243 of the INF file is invalid. Set up cannot continue. Press any key to exit, whether I press F6 or not.

This pc has an Asus P3B-F motherboard, Slot 1, HD Quantum AT-Fireball AS, ATI Rage 128 Graphics card, 3 Ram cards 128M, PC133 and PC100 (came with the pc that way) and DVD-ROM Lite-on IT Corp- model ltd-122.

I thought I might need a driver for the motherboard as my other Asus motherboard (different type) has a disk for Promise 100. So I downloaded a bios driver for the Asus P3B-F, but when I press F6 as instructed...I still get the "line7243 of the INF file is invalid....do I need some other driver? Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Answer:Line 7243 of the INF file is invalid. Setup cannot Continue. Press any key to exit.

Hey there, I recently updated my BIOS to a newer version due to BSODs and now it's been running perfectly. Although my system works fine now without any problems, I'm not too sure as to what marvell 91xx sata 6g controller is and if it'll affect my system. This never appeared before the BIOS update so could it be some settings in BIOS I have to tweak? I'm not sure if I should be in the Drivers Section or here as I do not know what marvell 91xx sata 6g controller really is, I know it has something to do with SSDs. Thanks!

Answer:marvell 91xx sata 6g controller. This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Marvell 91 xxm is a driver controller that works the 6 gig sata (3.0) connection on my Asus motherboard. I have never been able to use it because it causes problems. If you can get it to work it will speed up a SSD I/O, R/W slightly.
I use the Intel 2.0 sata connection with no problems. Because it is a SSD it still is very fast. If you are using a hard drive their would be no advantage on using sata 3.0 because of the speed a hard drive works at.

It would be helpful if you would completely fill in your specs. This Tutorial by
Brink will help you with that.

Hi,I am pretty much a noob with computers. I know that this topic has already started but each problem I read sounds a bit different to mine. Basically, we had our PC taken away by a computer guy to load up all of the software it needed to get going (this PC had been packed away for a while and we brought it out when my son moved out and took the other PC with him!) He brought it back, connected it to the wi fi. It was all good when he started it but the next time we started it we were getting the "disk error" message. After you press ctl alt del, it starts up , takes a while though. Other messages then come up " Google Chrome- your preferences file is corrupt or invalid. Google Chrome is unable to recover your settings" and "Microdoft Windows: The system has recovered from a serious error, A log of this error etc...."The PC is working right now. My son said it could be the hard drive, but how do I know ?(BTW, computer guy is on a course so cannot be contacted)

Answer:A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to re-start

Here is the best advice under the circumstances. You need to backup everything from the hard drive to a new drive. Please read the link below.QuoteData Recovery Tutorial: How to Slave a Hard Drivehttp://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/This is a tutorial from Jacqui Best about the proper procedure for slaving your hard drive prior to running data recovery software on it. This would also be the procedure to follow if you were to run speed clone to sector clone a noisy drive or if you have a partition problem and need to repair or recover data from a partition or if you need to restore or undelete a file.It is very important to not download data recovery software directly to the effected hard drive. If you don?t have a second drive or don?t have either a USB drive or USB capable data recovery software, then you must hook the drive up as a slave to run the software. Here is the logic for this kind of approach.A. The hard drive may fail with no further warning.B. The cost of data recovery is well over $1100.C. A new hard drive is under $100.D. Prevention (preemptive action) is better that a cure.If you can not use the recommended procedure, best come back and let the forum know and get some more ideas from other members.

Upon some instances of booting, clicking the start button produces the following error:

When I do sign out and log back in, the error persists even though the error window has disappeared. While this message is shown, I can still get on with tasks on my PC, but I'm unable to close it.

Answer:Critical Error message appears when I press the start button?

Hi, options:
1. Use a system restore point.

2. Restore your system from a disk image - you have discovered how invaluable the routine use of disk imaging is- so often recommended here- e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for images - allows you to recover from many situations relatively quickly without tech. help.

3. Repair/fix:

For assisted support, try the Start menu troubleshooter. After you've completed the troubleshooter, restart your device.

I recently built a new PC, however I'm having a problem installing Windows XP onto my SATA drive. It works perfectly if I use an IDE, but this is what happens with SATA:
-Goes to the setup screen and puts on the necessary files.
-Asks me to format.
-Starts the 15 second restart timer, then restarts.
-I change the boot order to HDD first.
-It tells me "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" when it's supposed to continue with the installation.

I've tried the drivers that came with the motherboard and no-go. I've also tried with no drivers and it still gives me this error. One time, I believe it said something about "Boot", but it flashed on the screen too fast and restarted to see what it said.

EDIT: If I made a direct copy from an IDE drive onto this SATA one, is there a chance that might help? If there's a driver issue, it would have all the drivers needed on the Hard-Drive wouldn't it?

Motherboard: Asus A8N-VM CSM
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3700 1MB L2 Cache
Case + Power: Antec Sonata II 450w PSU
RAM: Crucial Rendition 1GB PC3200 x 2
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 300GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATAII
GPU: Radeon 9600 XT AGP

Answer:Solved: SATA installation in XP = "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart"

Fixed it simply by making a clone of my IDE drive on my SATA drive :-].

After installing Win7 Professional on my S10-3, the F3607gw Mobile Broadband GPS Port (COM5) is marked with a yellow exclamation sign in Device Manager stating: "Device Cannot Start (Code 10). This happens on a fresh installed Win7 Professional. However if I reinstall my S10-3 from the recovery partition to Win7 Starter, all is fine and no yellow exclamation marks appear. The same drivers and versions appear to be installed with Win7 Professional as with Win7 Starter. Any ideas?

Hello!
A few months ago my computer kept coming up with the Port 1 Device error notification. I backed up all of my photos and videos to an external hard drive. The notification never came up again after that so I very stupidly thought that it must have been a false alarm. I was wrong. Just now my computer has died. There are some very important photos that I never backed up. Will I ever be able I get these back? I will be phoning our local computer tech tomorrow but I am desperate to know now if I have any chance of retrieving them. Our warranty ran out not too long ago so it will go to a local guy. Please help!!

Answer:Port 1 Device Error - please help!!

Don't worry just yet, if your hard drive is working photos can be easily taken out of there with a docking station or USB-SATA- cable

Upon booting his PC my brother is getting the error message as attached. The machine is running fine, however the pop up on the 2nd attachment appears sporadically. Machine is less than 6 months old. No new hardware or software (to my knowledge).

Are we looking at imminent hard drive failure or nothing to be 'too' concerned about?

Have intel i3 530 CPU unsure of motherboard brand. Have been having very slow boot times in Win7. Is now coming up in the post with AHCI Port 0 Device error F1 to resume.
Then Win7 starts slowly. After it starts get Intel Rapid Storage message that ' Disk port 0 at risk. Reset to normal. Do that & seems OK.
I would assume these symptoms indicate the onboard disk contoller is starting to fail. Since getting these messages shutdown is also very slow. Suggestions apart from a new PC please.

Last night, when I went to check my e-mail, my computer was on and running but there was a window with a large (UGLY!) Red X saying that my hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced and advising me to back up files immediately. I have an automatic backup in place which backs up files and a "disk image" to a Segate External Hard Drive.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Gateway Desktop with Intel Core i-7 processor.

After backing up a few files manually, I set the system to run a Chkdsk and rebooted. The Chkdsk had passed the first 3 of 5 levels, but was taking a long time with level 4 so I went to bed. Upon waking this morning, the Big Red X window was there again, but luckily my system did boot and I am still able to use it, but probably not for long.

1. If I have to get a new hard drive, is the image backup on the EHD what I would need to restore my fixed or new hard drive? If not, do I try to get an "image" file on a DVD and use that?

2. What, if anything, should I try next? Is there something, e.g. Chkdsk, which would likely repair the problem?

3. There was also something about a SMART advisory, but I don't know what that means.

I'm not even sure what else I should be asking/doing at this point. I would appreciate any/all advice and suggestions.

Recently, after unplugging my system from its power source (removing power cable from the power supply) and then later reconnecting the power source, the machine will not boot unless a Vista system disc is in the drive upon boot, mind you, not booting from the disc, just having it in the tray and booting to the OS harddrive. If the disc is not present at startup the machine displays the following error message:

DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISC AND PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE.

If I insert the disc after this is displayed, the machine hangs and does nothing. If I restart my system after inserting the disc, the machine boots as normal.

Attempted fixes:

bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd, /fixboot

Operations complete successfully but they do not fix the problem. These actions were attempted primarily as a shot in the dark. Typically I have encountered this issue when the molex connector or other cabling is loose on the OS HDD, but that is obviously not the issue, since I am posting this from the machine.

OS is currently installed on an IDE drive, set as master on the primary IDE channel.

Any suggestions would be appreciated to save my the extra step in order to boot.

I just downloaded Windows XP(Service pack 3) and mounted it to a USB disc.

Problem is, it doesnt work. On the boot screen it gives me the message invalid system disk. replace disk and press any key to continue and then when i press any key, it boots into my hard drive/Windows 8.

Originally i thought something was wrong with the boot but now i think it may or may not be. All help is highly appreciated.

Answer:Unable to boot, invalid system disk. replace disk and press any key to continue

Few, if any, downloadable copies of WinXP are legal. The 'Invalid System Disk' error message is the tip off.

You'll need to buy a copy from an authorized source. There is no way to trick the system into recognizing an illegal copy of Windows.

Hello All,
A friend of mine gave me a few computers- because his office was upgrading all of their systems-
I reformatted many of them and installed windows me (they are too slow to support xp), but I am having a problem with one.
Originally it had windows 2000 pro as the os( I didn't have the password to log-into the computer) So I ran fdisk, formatted the hard drive, then tried to install the new os but I keep getting the error message upon booting that "invalid system disk, remove then press any key to continue".
I thought the cd-rom was bad so I replaced it, I changed the boot sequence, used a floppy to boot, even got the hard drive manufacturer's utility program to prep the drive for the os but even that doesn't work.
Am I missing something?
Does the fact that I didn't have the password to enter the computer have anything to do with this?
I used this same method for installing me on all the other systems and they are fine, but this one is an issue.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
