External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

Question: External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.

I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.

I would much appreciate any help on how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

I use these forums a lot when I have a question, but I have never had the need to post before, so this is my first post. If this is in the incorrect sub-forum, I apologize.

Preferred Solution: External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I have EXACTLY the same issue, it's unfortunate no one replied to this

I also set all my drives to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and everytime I delete a file anywhere ALL external my drives wake up

Is there really no way around this? Is no one else having this issue? Does no one else have an external drive attached to his PC that he wants to sleep while idle? Why is Windows checking ALL the RECYCLE.BIN folders on ALL drives when I delete a file on ONE drive?

It would be really great if someone knew something about this, preferrably some way around this, so the drives can stay asleep when I do not intend to access them but just delete a file on a different drive.

Greetings group.
I have a 2 month old hard drive that failed on my desktop PC, taking My Documents with 7 years worth of data. I had just moved the folder to the new drive and hadn't gotten a chance to backup yet.
I'm trying to check Recycle bins on my External hard drives to see if I ever had even a partial Documents folder on one of them..
Problem: All 3 of my external hard drives have multiple recycle bins. All of the recycle bins show the same content as my local C Drive on my laptop. I am attaching 2 screenshots for your review. One shot is of the recycle bins on external drive, the other shot is a screenshot of the recycle bins on my C drive on laptop.
I'm logged in as Administrator because my normal login cannot access any of these recycle bins. And my normal login is in the Admin group. Using Windows Explorer as Administrator, I'm unable to see the Recycle bins. I can see them with my regular login. Very odd.

I'm so desperate for help. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

If this is in the wrong forum, please move to the correct forum.

I am running windows 7 64 bit, and have 4 external hard drives attached (not the best way, but until I can afford a server, the only way).
I am using my computer as a media center only.
When I wake my computer it can take a while (30 seconds to a minute), before I can use it, due to it starting up my external hard drives, but I have noticed a couple of times, my computer will wake without starting up my external hard drives (able to use media center within 2 seconds).
Does anyone know if there is a way to get my computer to wake up without starting up the external hard drives every time?

Answer:Wake computer without waking external hard drives

Switch them OFF.

Woke up this morning and the computer rebooted over night, when I logged in my desktop picture is still there but all my desktop icons have disappeared.  Did a quick google search and tried ending the explorer task and running it and still nothing.
Rebooted the computer a couple times and still nothing.  Then figured I'd go look into the registry to see if anything weird was showing in there and nothing.

When I click on the computer it shows my hard-drive is using 100GB of space but when I click on the c drive to view the contents it says that the folder is empty.  Verified that files weren't hidden and even after doing the show hidden files it still
says it's empry.  Windows 7 seems to be operating fine even though it's showing nothing.  Computer boots up fine, the ie icons on the taskbar opens up fine, any command line commands work.

Tried running the sfc scannow and came back clean, chkdsk has come back with no problems either.  Kinda at a loss as I'd rather not reinstall windows and I can't even back up the files I have as they aren't showing up.  I do get the same thing
whether I boot into safe mode or not.

Answer:No desktop icons except recycle bin and hard drive shows empty

Hi Christian,
Running a System Restore rollback to a previous working date seems to be the best option here, as the incident has been observed only today. If you're unable to run System Restore from Windows, you may try running it from Windows RE.Ramesh Srinivasan | The Winhelponline Blog

Will I be able to use a portable hard drive on my desktop computer before I get a new laptop?

Where would I find the best deal on a portable hard drive? Any brands I should avoid?

Answer:Why are portable external hard drives more expensive than desktop hard drives?

Why are portable external hard drives more expensive than desktop hard drives?Click to expand...

It should be obvious once you think about it for a second. Portable drives are encased in an enclosure. The enclosures must provide power and a data interface for the drive, and connections to the computer. The enclosure cost money to design and manufacture and then someone or some assembly process must install the drive in the enclosure.

The desktop drive has no enclosure and the power and data connections are supplied by the computer.

Will I be able to use a portable hard drive on my desktop computer before I get a new laptop?Click to expand...

Yes - as a secondary (not boot) drive.

Where would I find the best deal on a portable hard drive? Any brands I should avoid?Click to expand...

Shop around. Check out Newegg or Tiger Direct or Amazon.

When it comes to enclosures, the drives themselves are all comparably reliable. The problem comes with the enclosures. Not all are equal or offer the same interfaces. I would look for one that supports eSATA and/or USB 3.0.

1) You can go open recycle bin and then empty it. It just takes one more step to accomplish it.

2) If you have ccleaner you can restore or just clean with ccleaner itself. Honestly I've not used recycle bin for over a month.

Soo when I built my computer, I installed two hard drives since I knew I would eventually run out of room. Well the time has come...I installed Aion and now I'm out of room. BUT it wont let me install programs to the second hard drive. Is this a hard drive issue...like maybe wires should be placed differently? Or something I can do in the BIOS..? I'm kinda lost as far as using my second drive as something OTHER than storage...

Hi, I have a oldish acer lap top running windows vista and has two dual hard drives (30 gig a piece). I use the C: drive for programs and try keep all data and media on the D: drive. Both have obviously been quite full so I recently invested in an external harddrive and then cut and pasted pretty much everything from the D: drive into the external hard drive. Leaving the D: all but empty. The problem now however, is that while I have plently of space on the my D: drive the C: drive remains very full (less than 10% free) and I dont know what to move if anything. Furthermore I have been through the programs files looking for un-needed files, uninstalled unused programs, done a disk clean up and defrag and still I have less than 10% room. I cant even work out what is taking up all the space. Someone please help me

Answer:Dual Hard Drives, One Full, One Empty

You can use a partition utility to expand the "C:\" partition to fill the entire hard drive; the laptop has one physical hard drive split into two partitions. Here's one such free tool: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/

Be aware that if your only copy of the data is on the external drive then you have left yourself very prone to data loss if the drive fails; drives fail very frequently. You should have at least two copies of all important data.

even though there is also possibility issue also from the server side setting to this specific user, lets try to troubleshoot from client side
when this issue start happen? for first bet try to perform system restore using restore point
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4692-system-restore-how-do-windows-8-a.html
try to login using local admin PC, check if this issue also persist there
turn of antivirus and security software to check, or you can perform clean boot
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
try to run system file checker to fix registry issue
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833
try to login at safe mode with networking, and check
is this issue not persist at safemode with networking, maybe 3rd party software caused this issue
is there any important data on the D drive? please backup if any. Try to reformat this drive and check
the other workaround is try to re-create user profile. Maybe you need local administrator here

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

Answer:One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - 10.5.0.1015 - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

Hi been a silent reader for quite a while and have found some of the tips and solutions here on the forums very helpful.

Nuf said... I have a Trekstor MovieStation M.U (500GB) mainly used for storing movies and MP3's, it is showing a RECYCLE.BIN folder when I attached it to the Television. However, I cannot seem to find/view the said folder under Windows Vista or XP to be able to delete the entire folder (even after showing all files for folder options has been enabled) and reclaim the space used by the recycle bin.

Is there a way to permanently delete the RECYCLE.BIN folder from that external hard drive and reclaim the space?

I know there is a DOS command to do so, but am just not just sure how the exact formatting goes... afraid to make a mistake for I might delete more than just the recycle bin folder. hehehe...

If I remember right...

Cmd prompt< type cd\ type desired drive..

attrib -r -h -s recycle.bin but the cmd is not being accepted or there might be a missing string or cmds???

to remove???

rem recycle.bin /q

Then remove the entire recycle.bin folder after doing so. Please point me to the right direction, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I no longer remember the dos commands. hehehe...

TIA!

Answer:External Hard Drive Recycle.bin

Is the recycle.bin folder taking up that much room, it's shouldn't take up more of a then a few bytes when empty. It's s system folder that is part of Windows. Your TV is just displaying system files at are normally hidden in Windows.

Yesterday I discovered my computer will no longer read my flash drives, external hard drives or SD cards.  If I plug in any of them, they don’t even show up in Disk Management.  In Device Manager they will show up, but will have a yellow flag and under Properties it says the driver for this device is not installed even though they’ve been used before on the computer.  Clicking “Update Driver” doesn’t help because it searches and says there are no drivers for this device.  If I go to the “Events” tab, it gives the  date and “Device configured (null)”.

I restarted my computer today, hoping it might correct this problem, but when restarting I ended up with a message about an inaccessible boot drive.  After going into a loop several times where it told me about the inaccessible boot drive and then restarted again, I finally ended up with a screen that gave me more options for troubleshooting such as doing a system restore point.  I had the computer perform a system restore and finally it took me to the welcome screen and then desktop.  Anyway, rebooting did not correct the problem about my computer not reading my flash drives, external hard drives or SD card.  Any ideas?  Maybe the problems I’m having are related to a recent Windows update (computer seemed to be working fine before the update), but don’t know for sure.

I volunteer for a Charity in the main role of IT admin. Part of what I want to do is ensure the Laptops, External Drives and Memory sticks are encrypted, but I am worried if I (try to) encrypt a drive with files already on, they will get messed up. I am not an expert, so would appreciate any advice and guidance anyone can give. Any favourite products? We are a charity so want to pay little or nothing for this. The intention is to ensure any personal information we hold is secure if it falls into the wrong hands. I am clearly looking at making sure no-one uses Laptops/Ext drives/memory sticks that do not belong to the charity when working (self included), but am a little uncertain where to start with this and do not want to make things worse. Any input gratefully received. Probably a simple question for lots of you, but not for me!!

Answer:Encryption of hard drives, external drives and Memory sticks

All the encryption programs I know of support encrypting drives with data. BitLocker and Vercrypt(TrueCrypt port) absolutely do. BitLocker absolutely requires the use of strong Windows passwords as it only protects the drive if its removed or accessed via another boot device. VeraCrypt has the added benefit of having a pre-boot password so you cannot even boot to the operating system without entering the password. You should still of course have strong passwords and automatic locking of the system after a set time of inactivity.

You may also want to re-evaluate the need for USB drives and sticks, not only are they bad for data security but also easy to lose, have stolen, or just fail. Central storage and VPN access may be preferred to a giant pile of external devices that some places end up relying on.

I am running Windows XP SP3 right now on a Lenovo 7650-ELU and experiencing some odd problems. For some reason, the laptop I have will not recognize USB Flash Drives that I put into it or External Hard Drives. I know that the USB ports work correctly, because I have plugged in optical mouses and keyboards that work. I searched the forums and didn't see anything like this.

It's odd how when I first insert them, it makes the sound and shows the icon in the taskbar that would allow me to safely remove the device, but nothing else. So far, I have gone into the device manager and uninstalled all the USB ports and restarted hoping this would solve my problem, but it continues to do the same thing.

If anyone has some helpful advise, please post. I appreciate all the help.

Cheers!

Hi all,

I was using Ace Utilities to scan an external hard drive and I noticed that 35.5GB was taken up in a folder called $recycle.bin. Can I empty the contents of this folder and all will be ok?

Thanks

edit to add....theres also a folder called RECYCLER which contains 3.3GB...can this be emptied too?

Answer:$recycle.bin folder on external hard drive

Those folders contain the files you have moved to Recycle Bin. $recycle.bin is used by Windows Seven, RECYCLER was used by earlier 5x series Windows (2000, XP, 2003).
If you do not need any of the files from the Recycle Bin you can delete both of these folders. Windows will restore them when needed.

OK this is NOT really a "problem" but more annoying than anything else.I was just wondering if this is supposed to work this way...and if not if there is a way to "fix" this?

When I have not been to my (32 bit) Win 7 Recycle bin in awhile, I usually click on it and HAVE TO WAIT while my Western Digital 3 TB External hard drive is activated (It also used to happen on my Western Digital 1 TB External hard drive as well)...this happens everytime and a re-format does NOT make this behavior go away...Is this supposed to happen?

Because it is VERY ANNOYING having to wait whle my external hard drive "wakes up" ...when all I am wanting to do is access the stupid recycle bin in win 7!

Anyone got a solution for this? Or is that what is supposed to happen?

I really do not know if this is caused by win 7...or by the western digital external hard drive itself....but I have been using this brand for awhile and I think it used to happen in XP also, though it was SO long ago I do not remember.

Answer:External hard drive activates when using win 7 recycle bin?

Files deleted from a hard drive are stored in the drives recycle bin, even though it is not a visible folder.  By accessing the recycle bin while a drive is connected windows includes the files for that drive as well, by default.  If the drive is not connected it will not be included.  This is normal.

Hello,

In mid December I purchased a custom built PC and up until now it has been running perfectly.

But recently I scanned my entire computer (and connected devices) with AVG and found that inside of my external hard drive I have a virus.

This virus is located in the hidden $RECYCLE.BIN folder.

I have tried using AVG Free, Norton 360 (Trial) and Malwarebytes (Trial) to remove the virus but they either don't find the objects or are unable to delete them.

I have tried browsing to the folder myself by changing folder options but when I try to delete the folder in question the deletion diolog does not move from "discovering".

I will attach some screen shots of my AVG test results. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

zformer,

You can consider the use of the Panda Vaccine on your computer and USB Drives:
Download Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine - MajorGeeks

This tool provides a two way security by vaccinating both computer and/or USB drives.
It work on NTFS, FAT, FAT32 formatted drives.
However, vaccinating a USB drive cannot be undone without formatting the USB disk, using a hex editor, or a File Manager in a Linux distribution..

Next, make sure that your Antivirus can scan USB drives. Some do not have this option.

In Disk Management do the External USB drives have a drive letter assigned? If not they probably won't show in File Explorer. I keep 3 such drives connected always and they have drive letters, the USB Thumb drives I plug in automatically get a drive letter assigned and then can be seen in File Explorer.

Hi need help, have basic computer skills.
My computer went insane last night and to cut a long story short I ended up having to reformat my pc. When I had everything set up again I plugged in my external hard drive and it showed up as empty. I got out my backup cd and copied it during the process I got a warning message that there was already a folder called (Creative Writing) and did I want to overwrite the originall. I stoped the copying. I'm assuming that means the files are all still there (phew) now how do I make it so I can see and acess them. I have the pc set up to see hidden files.

If I'm running utorrent when I put my W7 pc to sleep, after it wakes my external hardrive will become completely unresponsive. Usb hardrive at this point will not eject properly so I have to either unplug it unsafely or reboot PC to regain control of drive. If I remember to shut off Utorrent before I put PC to sleep, PC will wake fine with ex. hardrive working fine. Anyone know a fix for this so I can avoid having to turn Utorrent off first before I put my PC to sleep?

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

Hello!

I work on a laptop and a desktop. I use an external 320 GB hard disk to save my files.
The laptop is running windows 7 home basic 64 bit (more than 2 years old) and The desktop is running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recently installed with formatting new pc).
The problem is..
If the HDD connected to the desktop and I delete any file from the HDD, the file appears in the recycle bin of the desktop but as I connect the HDD in laptop the files are not appear under recycle bin of the laptop. Likewise any file deleted from HDD appears in recycle bin of the laptop when the HDD connected to the laptop but not appears in the recycle bin when connected to the desktop.
Is it normal? I do not think so. If it is a problem then how can I correct it. I have tried windows troubleshooting -- performance check , HDD error check but no error can be find out in both computers.

Wish for your helpful suggestions.

Answer:Recycle bin not showing deleted files for an external hard drive

I think this is quite normal if I have read your post correctly. When you delete a file from your external HD the deleted file get transferred to the Recycle Bin of the computer you are using. When you change the external HD to your laptop then there is no record of those files as they have already been deleted & would still be the Recycle Bin of desktop, unless you have deleted them from there.

Answer:$RECYCLE.BIN problem, External hard drive gets stuck and not responding...

Recycle Bin...should be a folder reflected for each partition.Recycler should be a folder reflected on each partition/drive when using Explorer view in Windows.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171694Both of these are perfectly normal system files and should not be tampered with. Do not try to manually delete them or delete the contents. If you think that your Recycle Bin is damaged...simply turn off the Recycle Bin on the desktop to remove the contents of the folders reflected on each partition. You can turn it back on the reverse way of turning it off.http://delltech.150m.com/XP/exploring/12.htmLouis

I already found out the hard way that flash drives don't have a registry in which I can install a program to it, and run it on other computers, unless the program is a lite program. Is there a way to make it more flexible in the sense of creating a registry for it?

Next question; Do external hard drives have a registry? Could I install games and or programs to an external and run them directly from it? Is there a way to create a registry for it if it does not have one?
Anyone that has anything else to possibly add, I'm more than happy to explore any and all options, so don't be shy!

Help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

i do not know the particulars of it but yes it is possible to copy/paste a programme file from c drive ,programme files, onto flash drive and run it, i do it myself

Hi, I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive, and already used 240gb space.
It worked fine until yesterday suddenly i could not access the files at all. I checked disk management, and it showed that my external drive became RAW drive.

I tried to do chkdsk that i learned from one of the forum, and then it somehow has fixed the RAW drive back to FAT32. However i still cannot see any of my files.

I opened command prompt, and typed in dir /a
and it said 0 files 0 byets, 4 DIR 288,714, 293, 248 bytes free

How can i bring my files back?? I don't want to lose my files
can someone help me please..urgent

Sorry i am no tech expert, so please help me using an easy explanation =)

Answer:HELP! External hard drive shows used space but empty folders!

Sounds like the FAT table has got screwed up meaning the OS will not be able to display your files - don't worry, this is quite common and you should be able to recover them on the assumption the drive is not physically damaged (i.e. clunking when seeking).

There are plenty of recovery programs, some free, that work well.

I'll check these out and post back.

Just got a WD elements external drive, 120GB. My father has two computers at his business, and he has not backed them up. A failure of one of the computers means he wouldn't be able to perform day-to-day operations, so a clone of the hard drives is vital.

So I did a little bit of googling, but there isn't one freeware solution that people recommend. I've partitioned it into two equally sized, 55GB partitions. The hard drives that are to be backed up are both 40GB. Anyone know which software is best for cloning the hard drive? I'm comfortable with using command line if need be.

Answer:Cloning multiple hard drives to one external hard drive?

For small single operations I use Clonezilla LiveCD. It's not command line based, but it is text user interface based, so it looks kind of old school. It works great, though.

If you want to get crazy and set up a dedicated box for this, FOG (Linux based, requires a Linux install and a stand-alone computer to act as a server) could do the trick too.

I'd start small with Clonezilla LiveCD and if you want something heavier duty, check out FOG. I use both almost daily. Both are free/open source as well.

As with anything else, do a ton of testing on a practice machine so you get the feel of it. It sounds like this data is critical, so don't use a production machine as your guinea pig to feel out the software.

Hi all,

After almost losing most of my data I want to start a good back-up routine.

My computer has two internal 3TB hard-drives. I have ordered two external USB 3 3TB hard-drives.

I thinking about buying HDClone 'Standard Edition', but I want to make sure it's right for me before I buy.

I want it to be a completely exact copy.

Does HDClone clone 3TB hard-drives? (I saw that some software only clones hard-drives up to 1TB)

Do you think I should buy it?

Thanks!

Answer:Cloning two 3TB hard drive to two 3TB external hard drives

Remember that Cloning means the Target Drives are PRECISELY "the same OR larger" than the original drives. If the original drivers are 2,974,442 formatted and the Target drives are 2,974,308, you MAY have problems. It doesn't take a lot to be 'smaller', in other words.

Before I plan on software, I make sure the drives fit this important criteria.

I can test out some freebie stuff (Macrium Reflect is one example, or if I'm getting Seagates or WDs, they often include a clone-capable package themselves). I don't want to discourage buying good software - I find the best packages have extensive partitioning services, too - making smaller or larger partitions based on Actual Usage rather than some synthetic boundary.

We do a lot of cloning for Boot SSDs, and our practice is to buy two identical drives. Build one up, load all the software, let the user mess it for a few days, then clone it to the 'cold' identical unit. And then make the users switch that 2nd drive for actual usage. If there's a problem, then the original's intact.

Since your 3Tb drives probably aren't your boot drives but are 'just data drives', I wonder about the time spent cloning instead of "just copying what I want to save" directly.

I have two external hard drives I used on two different computers. On both computers I backed up all information onto the external hard drives before installing windows 10 on both computers. I was running windows 7 on both computers before the installation. On both computers I cannot get the computers to recognize the external hard drives when plugged in the USB. All USB plugs work with anything else plugged in.
I done a search in the forum and found many other people had the same problem. I went through all the advise given and none of advise worked for me. After about 16 hours of actual working time trying to get the information from my external hard drives I am at a loss and desperate. I am loosing money every day my backup is not connected.

My question is: can I take the hard drive disk out of the external hard drive and buy a hard drive cradle and try to see if my computers will read my backup that way.
The information on these external hard drives is too important to lose. That is why I am asking before I take the external hard drives apart.

Greetings TechGuy Friends!

I have a friend who has suggested that I consider getting myself an external hard drive (ehd) to augment my HP Pavillion 28 gig computer. My OS is Windows ME. My friend thought because I store a lot of digital photos, scanned slides, and music, that a Maxor or Lacie 120 GB, 7200 RPM ehd (from GoGoCity) would be a good choice for storage and backup. (I don't currently work with video, though I hope to one day get me some software and do something about all the digital video I've shot.) So with this information given, my questions are these:

1) Does a 120 GB ehd sound about right, given my usage, or is it an overkill?

2) Some ehd's offer both USB 2.0 and Firewire interface capability. I don't have Firewire, and though it may be faster(?), I've understood that it really hasn't "caught on" and may wind up being obsolete? If that's true, I'll just go with the USB. But if not, should I spend the extra $$ to get the ehd with the option to interface with both USB and Firewire?

3) I've seen that ehd's offer varying Cache Buffer Sizes. I have no idea what the purpose or importance of this spec is. Should I go with one that offers 2MB, 8MB, or none (if that even exists)?

4) Are there any peripherals, cords, etc. that I should be aware of needing that perhaps aren't offered with the ehd as sold by, say, GoGo City?

5) Finally, I've noticed that in the case of Maxor, the retail versions a... Read more

My music is starting to take up a large hunk of my hard drive, so I've been thinking of investing in an external hard drive to use exclusively for storing and playing my music from. I'm looking for something reliable and affordable. Since I'm only using it for music I don't think I'd need something really high end.

Any suggestions on what I should look for, and what I should avoid?

Thanks! :beard:

Answer:External Hard Drives

depends on how much you want to spend, how much space you need, and remember, cheaper u go, crappier the drive, and the crappier the drive, the more chances you got to losing all of your music

(been there, done that, cussed at it, its not worth buyin cheap, unproven, off brand crap)

if u feel like building one your self, it will save you money, just get a standard 3.5in hdd, and then get an external usb enclosure and put it toghether, u should be set.

Answer:external hard drives

Welcome to Major Geeks!
I just spent the past 20 minutes searching the Seagate web site for any mention of an "xtra store" hard drive. I found nothing. And I mean nothing. No hint of it, not a blurb, nothing. Are you sure it's a Seagate? Are you sure it's called an "xtra store"? If you could post a model number/part number I may able to find something that will help. I use 2 external drives at home, and 3 or 4 at work and never have any trouble with any of them. 2 are by Seagate, one is by WD, and the rest I built myself using several different brand hard drives including Seagate, Hitachi and WD (the HD in my home PC is a Seagate). Try right clicking on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. Then right click on the bold print for the drive in question. If 'initialize' is one of the options, select it, then try to re-partition/re-format or de-partition then re-partiton/re-format.

Copying the contents of C: drive would almost certainly violate copyright/licence laws with regard to the operating system and applications you already have installed on the first computer. External hard drives are useful for backing up of data (personal documents, images etc.).

Problem is that when I plug them in, they don't appear with consistent drive letters. Sometimes the photo drive is labelled J and other times K.

Is there any way I can permanently label these drives so that every time I plug them in they will be given the correct letters?

And at what point or how big would the hd have to be without splitting it??? What are the differences between portable hard drive and external hard drive?
Whatís a good brand?
I want to backup some digital photos and MP3ís

Answer:External hard drives

If my understanding is correct, a portable hard drive is a type of external hard drive that does not require a separate power cord, hence it is "portable" because it can be powered by the USB cord that connects it to the computer. A regular old external HDD requires a USB data cord as well as a power cord.

For specific brands, I'm using a Maxtor and a Western Digital right now and they've both served me well for over a year now with 0 problems (although I do have a mini-fan cooling them 24/7)

And if you are just looking to backup files, I would probably get a regular external HDD since the "portable" ones are a little more expensive.

A thought just occurred to me that there must be some alternatives to buying the overpriced external hard drives such as the Maxtor OneTouch II or the LaCie d2 Extreme...but what I asked myself?

I have heard of hard drive cases for internal drives that can reduce cost per GB, but is this reliable and a good overall alternative?

It also occurred to me, could I buy a mini-tower and use it just to put multiple internal harddrives in it, no cpu, no ram, just harddrives...is that possible? Something tells me it is not, but something also tells me there may be something else that is specifically designed for that type of hard drive rack setup, but what is it I do not know...

Any help or opinions are appreciated!

Hi there hlemaster, I'm willing to help you if you like. One particularly good brand for External Hard Drives is Western Digital, though Maxtor's are generally pretty good as well, and Seagate is good also. They are all pre-assembled ones. If you are confident enough to build one yourself (which is just plugging in about one cable and 6 screws), then they are much cheaper. Let me know if you are interested in the latter option, and I will tell you what you need to buy. I am assuming you are possibly American? If so, I do not know any local computer stores, but I can give you links to online examples, and then you can phone around to local stores to see if they stock them. For a 1TB, you can expect to pay a reasonably high price. Here's a few links:http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=353http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=267&language=enhttp://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=361http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=374The first one is probably the most suited for what you want - it is the simplest and cheapest, and Western Digital offers free shipping for purchases over $200.Heres a Maxtor drive:http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OTIII_Turbo/Seagate don't have 1TB External's Prebuilt. Answer:External hard drives

If intent is to have downloads from the internet redirected to the external, you have to change the properties in the browser for the default save location. If you want to transfer data from your hard drive to the external to free up your card drive its as easy as selecting the folder that contains your data and right-clicking and selecting copy and then navigate to the external drive in windows explorer or my computer and  paste the folder to the external drive. Once the data is copied over and verified by yourself that its all there you can either let the data remain on the C: in say My Documents folder or you can delete it and have the data only on the external to free up the computers hard drive. Its best to actually just delete what is less important data from your hard drive on the computer and let the most important data to remain at both locations so that you dont have a single point of failure that will wipe out all your data, the 2nd location remains with the most important data unless both get destroyed or damaged.

I have now bought a new one but is it ok to have 2 Ext HDD going together on my PC, because I want to copy certain material from my existing Ext HDD to my new one as well as a complete backup. Will this cause a prob or damage my PC in any way? thanks for any help.

Answer:External Hard drives

It is fine.

I have a Seagate Freeagent and a Maxtor 3100 external hard drive. I just learned it is not good for these to run all the time. That I should hibernate them or turn them off when not in use. I backup to them when ever I am on my computers so I need them to turn on and off when I bootup and off. How can I or can I shut them off each time with out crawling all around removing them from the computers. Please advise.

Thank you,
Wadda

Hi - I've read so many threads about these - would you say there's not really much difference between Lacie, Seagate and Western Digital? Or is it just a case of people have good and bad experiences with each? (as with most technology!)I've got a couple of LaCies but want a 1TB, but am getting confused with the variety of models in each range.Another LaCie would look neat and tidy on my desk, but I suppose that's not the best criterion for purchasing!Any comments would be appreciated.

Someone is bound to say they are a bad choice though.Get the one you like the look of.Dave

Bought a new 2TB Western Digital Elements external portable hard drive to back-up my computer. When I plug it in (it does show up as being recognized by the computer) and go to the Windows backup , click on back up now, there is a pause, then the message that it "did not back-up, check my backup and try again". Which I have done. Over and over, with the same result.

Hi, I'm not very tech savvy so I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this about but I was wondering if external Hard drives larger than 2-4 terrabytes that are only powered by USB exist. As in all I would have to do is plug it into my laptop or tower and bam, it's ready.

I'm asking because I don't have a custom tower PC or a custom laptop that I can just buy a large internal hard drive for. I only have a laptop that was store bought.

If anyone knows of any or any particular brands you think are better I'd like to hear about them and check them out. I currently have a seagate 2 terrabyte external. No problems so far.

Thank you,

Jordin

I rely on Western Digital.

Answer:External Hard Drives

I've just purchased an external USB Maxtor 120Gb for £127 inc vat, and it fair flies. Very impressed with it. Dead easy to set up and no complications.I know it's over your "budget" but for the extra £27 you get another 40Gb.

how do i store the external hard drive safely away?
and once backup, is it easy to put everything back lol?

Answer:Using external hard drives ?

If you use a "normal" drive (not a Maxtor One Touch), then you also need a backup program. There are a couple of free ones like Macrium ( Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download ) but most are for a fee between $40 and $70 ( Data Backup Software Review 2009 - TopTenREVIEWS ). Those programs do both data backup and imaging. For data, you can recover some or all data files any time with the program on your system. For system recovery (e.g. when your Vista crashed completely or when your disk went south and you had to replace it with a new one) you have to load the recovery program from the CD (that either comes with the program or you have to produce (burn) one yourself) by switching the boot sequence in the BIOS. The recovery works very well - at least with Norton Ghost where I have done it already a few times. With my Maxtor One Touch (that comes with those programs and the recovery disk), I have only done backup. I have recovered a couple of files but not the whole system yet - there was no need yet.
The best is to disconnect the external disk when you are done with the backups. That way, even the worst malware cannot get at it. Just put it into the closet. It is easier with a USB powered disk than with one that comes with it's own power supply.
Here is a link where they offer disks at good prices. The offerings change daily. ( Deals2buy: Storage Devices deals ).

I have an old pentium II 233mz pc. A while back I tried to install an internal 40GB hard drive but found I couldn't because the motherboard does not accept hard drives bigger than 10gb. Would an external drive be a way round this or does it still use the same system.

Answer:External Hard drives

External drive boxes that take your old HDD are really just USB2 to IDE adapters as the Bios won't reconize the large drive I believe you will have the same problem. Is there a BIOS upgrade for your motherboard on the makers web site or BIOS web site name and version appear on screen as you first boot up.i.e award / ami/\0/\

Hi Guys, I am looking to buy an external hard drive to free up space & save data being a luddite & not a gamer I mostly want to store photo"s letters etc how much do I need 500 GB or 1TB also can I connect with USB cable or do I realy have to have a custom install ps what is a reliable brand Thanks Glenn.

Answer:external hard drives

For photos and letters, 500GB will be fine. In fact, even 320GB or something would be more than enough because photos/letters do not generally take up much space. External hard drives are usually connected with a USB cable (the usb cable is included with the drive). Before buying, read the specifications of the product to make sure it is connected to your computer by usb. Reliable brands... hmm... They are all pretty good, I have a Seagate 500GB External Hard Drive. Also, I'd recommend Western Digital or maybe Hitachi (my computer hard drive is hitachi).

Answer:external hard drives?

Hi and Welcome to Majorgeeks

Options I would go for are,

Seagate
http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/
the pushbutton version I like as its stackable.

Western Digital
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=232&language=en
The My Book Series ( Essential, Premium and Pro ) the smaller more portable Passport drives only goto capacities of 120GB

Maxtor
http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OTIII_USB/
One Touch III series

External drives add some great portability, with your storage of files as they are easily transported to other PCs, over the internal HDs in which you need to open up your PC for remove/replace.

I find they are superb for creating full backup images of your main Operating System/Installed software drive, incase you have a major crash or malware infestation as dependent on last backup.. restore your PC back to full working order as if you had never had a problem.

I would look at some of the options you will recieve like mine above then use a seach engine to hunt down some reviews of the suggested products.

Each day I see more and more threads posted regarding USB External Hard Drive problems, and I'm just asking for opinions to try to enrich my knowledge.

I have three USB externals. Two are Maxtor 80Gb. vintage 2002 with single partitions one formatted NTFS and the other formatted FAT32. I use these drives for data recovery from customers machines.

I have another Western Digital 120Gb. vintage 2005 formatted NTFS that I use for file backup on the machine I am using right now.

After I purchased the Maxtors (both came formatted FAT32) I immediately reformatted one of the drives in Windows to NTFS and did nothing to the FAT32 unit, however I later zero filled the FAT32 unit and reformatted with the Maxtor utility back to FAT32. The Western Digital unit also came formatted FAT32 and I reformatted it with Windows to NTFS.

I used NONE of the backup software that came with the Maxtors or Western Digital drives. All the drives are IDE. I have used all these drives extensively and never had a problem with any of them. Just recently I pulled the drive from the Maxtor NTFS volume to check everything in the enclosure (since nothing had been done to the drive for 5 years except use it), zero filled the drive and ran the Maxtor extended test. The drive checked out perfectly.

My questions are this;

(1) Are the problems we are seeing today caused by the factory pre-format?
(2) Are the problems caused by the backup software that comes with most pre-built drives?
(3) Are the problems ... Read more

I had a similar problem with an older Sony Vaio laptop. Wanted to upgrade to a 20Gb from the installed 4.3. BIOS wouldn't let me do it. I tried flashing the BIOS (it wouldn't take), tried drive overlay software (wouldn't have that either), so I gave up.The new 20Gb drive sat in drawer for several months until I decided to install it in a USB case and use it as a large "pen drive" for transporting my work from PC to PC. Lo and behold...the laptop has no problem seeing 20 Gb external!!!Can't guarentee you'll have the same success, but suggest you ask around workmates / friends / works IT dept to see if you can borrow a drive overnight to try.Good luckLonghouse

Hello,

My computer is starting to do some scary stuff. Before it crashes and I lose all my priceless digital photos of my baby girl, I want, I think, to get an external hard drive to dump all my photos and tunes onto. A knowledgable friend of mine suggested getting a 120 GB, 7200 RPM EHD from Western Digital. Maxtor and Lacie are also good he said.

What I don't know is whether I should get a "one-touch" option - or is that a bell/whistle I don't really need? And I also want to know whether I should get both firewire and USB 2 connection capabilites, even though I only have USB at this time. For what it's worth, my PC runs Windows ME. Also, I'm wondering whether it matters if the EHD's case is not the original manufacturer's - like many on offer from GoGo City, for example.

I like the idea of having an external, separate HD that can't be affected by viruses/worms that might get into my main HD. Anyone able to help me sort this out and clarify my search a bit? Much appreciation in advance.

CCF

Answer:external hard drives

You may want to consider another variation.

HDD caddies are cheap, and allow easy removal of a secondary HDD from the PC. This is a very economical way of backup, and I think you are wise to consider the need.

Otherwise I would be quite happy with the use of a HDD in a "generic" USB or Firewire case.

Is anyone using one of the following?Maxtor OneTouch USB 120GB Hard DriveIomega Desktop USB 120GB Hard DriveI would be most grateful for any information on the above. e.g. Reliability, ease of use etc. etc. They are to be used essentially for system backup - one for a laptop, the other for a desktop computer.Storik

Answer:External Hard Drives

I use a Maxtor 250Gb OneTouch external drive, connected via firewire (it comes with firewire and USB2 conections). It's simple to use -- just looks like another fixed drive so far as XP and 98SE are concerned. It has its own power supply and on/off switch, so can be powered down when you're not using it. Installation was simple -- had to install drivers for 98SE, I think, but not for XP. Comes with its own backup software, but I just drag and drop using Explorer.I haven't used it enough to speak about its reliability, but so far it's always there when I want it.

I think I need an external HDD for backup and storage. Can I use this to keep My Pictures, music etc and still have immediate access to them, or do the files have to be downloaded to the main hard drive each time? Any advice on using an external drive would be appreciated.ThanksMonco

Answer:External hard drives

Are just like normal hard drive's. They are great in my opinion for backing up onto and thing's like that, but for heavy use i would get worried about as i think they are slower than normal. This is because of the way that you access them. External's tend to use USB that can be slow, so unless you have a USB2 compatable hard drive, i would go for a normal drive, cheaper aswell! If i had the choice between external and standard hard drive though i know what i would choose for keeping music and backing up onto, is the standard one everytime.
