USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Question: USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Answer:3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

My disk was full of useless junk, so I decided to format it. It worked fine until earlier today, where when I booted up my pc, it vanished from explorer. "Odd", I thought. So I went to Disk Mgmt and formatted it again. It shows up as a healthy partition in Disk Mgmt but nothing comes up in Explorer. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

It would love to have a drive letter allocated - then hopefully you will see it in explorer. Presently it's a bit lost and lonely...

well ive run out of hard disk space like every other laptop user and i wanted to try and set up an external kit

what i had in mind was to use a PCMCIA card to IDE or SATA connector to connect via the pcmcia slot to a normal IDE or SATA internal hard disk drive in an enclosure...

is this possible or a pipe dream?

if it is possible - will the connected hard disk have the capacity/speed to boot up an operating system or run apps off it?

also what would anyone recommend - an IDE or SATA HD considering the fact that its connected via a PCMCIA card and its performance is/isnt limited by it...

really hope someone can help as i havent got a clue

I have an external hard drive that wasn't showing up anywhere on my computer, so I replaced the hard drive case and now the external hard drive is found in device manager, but not in disk management or my computer. I am running windows 8, and there is data on the external hard drive that I would like to have access to.

The disk drive that is in the case is a Samsung HD103SI

I have used the rescan command in disk management. It showed as Disk 2 Unknown and not initialized. (Please note this is not a new disk and it has data on it that I am hoping to retrieve).

Some information that might help:

The system is:
LENOVO 90B70019US Lenovo H50-50

Using Belarc Advisor the drives show as:
MATSHITA DVD-RAM SW840 [Optical drive]

ASMT 2115 USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 2, s/n 00000000000000000000
ST1000DM003-1ER162 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB) -- drive 0, SMART Status: Healthy
WDC WD10EZEX-60M2NA0 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB) -- drive 1, SMART Status: Healthy

I have a HDD 750G with 2 partitions NTFS with data.
used externally in a USB3 box connected to my windows 8.1 asus laptop.

No idea what I do, I always use 'eject' before disconnecting this HDD, but now I see that with diskpart :

DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 238 GB 1024 KB *
Disk 1 Online 22 GB 0 B *
* Disk 2 Online 698 GB 611 GB
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM 0 B No Media
Volume 1 C OS NTFS Partition 49 GB Healthy Boot
Volume 2 D Data NTFS Partition 167 GB Healthy
Volume 3 SYSTEM FAT32 Partition 100 MB Healthy System
Volume 4 Recovery NTFS Partition 900 MB Healthy Hidden
Volume 5 Restore NTFS Partition 20 GB Healthy Hidden

so disk 2 is there, but no volume, no partition, no drive letter. just a 'bip' sound when I connect the disk to usb port.

i try with paragon disk manager or aomei partition assistant, but can't assign a drive letter (option greyed)
how can I do to get 2 drive letters & access my datas ?

thanks for help

Answer:External disk : diskpart shows disk but no drive letter

What does Win8 Disk Management show for that drive? If it shows as "raw" in the list, and it won't let you assign a drive letter, it could be that the drive has failed.

Alright, I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS 8300 yesterday. I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past 1-2 yeas now with 2 different laptops, working fine. I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine. There was an error as the copy rate slowwed so I decided to delete and try again. I did that about 3 times and then decided to just copy the music album by album. Eventually, I don't know how it ended up happening, instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab, it started showing up as Local Disk: J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now. It doesn't matter where I plug it in. Not only that, it won't open when I try to open it. It will get 95% loaded and then just pause and stop responding. I'm completely lost.

My hard drive is Seagate 250 GB.

Answer:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

I have a problem with a new external hard drive I bought. In Windows XP, it appears as "Seagate Expansion Desk USB Drive" under Disk Drives in Device Manager, but it doesn't appear in Disk Management, where all the drives are listed. It also doesn't appear in My Computer. How can I allocate it a drive letter so I can use it? My drives go up to K, so it should be allocated L drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate External Hard Drive shows up in Device Manager, but not Disk Management.

Attach the drive to a different usb port. Open a command prompt. Type
list disk
Copy and paste the result. You can do this by clicking the icon of a monitor in the menu bar Edit > Select All. Edit > Copy. Right click in your post > Paste.

I just spent a long time trying to find the best answer for this and wanted to save people some time... this is specifically for Windows 10.
(So, the answer is basically here:

Add a new "Multi String Value" called "TreatAsInternalPort" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\Parameters\Device with the values "0|1|2|3|4|5|" (the | symbolizes a new line)
(I had to reboot two (2) times before the changes took.)

I had to do this fix because BitLocker has different options specifically for fixed, local, internal drives as opposed to a USB drive or eSATA drive which is removable. Also, this gets rid of the "Eject" option in Windows 10 for mislabeled internal HDDs.

This is what it looks like when storing the values into "TreatAsInternalPort":

Answer:Change internal SATA disk from removeable to fixed in Windows 10

Well, I just installed the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers and all the corrected fixed drives that were once removable changed back to removable. I also installed the latest Intel Chipset Software and Marvell SATA Controller drivers. And I'm not completely sure which driver update switched them back to removable. So, I recommend installing the drivers first before doing the fix above to the registry. I am going to attempt to do the fix again and if I have problems I'll write back here otherwise consider it done.

  0 downloadsDear all,
I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Answer:Problem with slow (impossible) disk image making on USB 2.0 external hard disk

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.
I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition -
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] -
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.
Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.
All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Hi all. I have an Asus P8Z77V-Deluxe mobo with Win8.1x64. The mobo has 4 6G SATA ports, 2 are Intel and the other 2 are Marvell. I have the main OS SSD drive and 2nd internal HDD connected to the 2 Intel 6G SATA ports without issues. Today I added a 3rd SSD drive connecting it to one of the Marvell 6G SATA ports. The drive was picked up by Windows but problem is that in System Tray it shows as a removable SCSI Disk device. I tried to reset the BIOS to default values without success. How can I make Windows see this 3rd drive as a fixed drive and not removable? Thanks.

Answer:3rd internal SSD shows as removable SCSI Disk Device

That port is probably set as eSATA and windows sees it as external drive. In the bios you can probably set it as "normal" SATA port but Marvel controller is not particularly good for SSDs anyway, you should ideally connect it to primary controller and connect HDD or CD there if there's no available connections on primary (Intel) controller, HDDs and DVDs don't care about it.
If you want to keep present configuration, you can go to Device manager > Disk drives > Policies and set to "Enable write caching for this device", it should make it an "Ordinary" drive.
Oh, just to ad, all IDE, PATA, SATA are part of SCSI standard so it's mention doesn't mean it's conventional SCSI connection.

I am not sure whether I should be posting this in the Windows forum or the PC Hardware because it involves both.

I have an external 320 GB Transcend Drive with a lot of important data.
Recently, I unplugged it from my PC and took to another to get some files.
One the other machine (Vista), it didn't show up as far as I can remember, thought that was strange so i brought it back to my Laptop (Win 7, Dual Boot with Ubuntu 10) and it only showed as Local Disk, I have tried to find useful information on the net but some is very vague and some is outright stupid and irrelevant.

The fact is that the HDD is not broken. When in Ubuntu I can view the contents fine and everything is there, no freeze ups or anything, but in windows the drive shows up as Local Disk, I don't think it is a drive letter conflict.

The Device shows up fine in the Device Manager.
I'm sure some of you have solved this problem as it seems many on the Internet have.
If so please tell me in a few steps how you resolved it.. I am not formatting as I do not deem this necessary since I can access my data fine in Ubuntu.

Kind Regards

Answer:External Hard Drive Works In Ubuntu / Shows as "Local Disk" in Win 7 and doesn't work

I suggest that while in Ubuntu you move the files to local HDD, then reformat external HDD, then copy the files back.

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

The port of my external HDD was not working hence I changed the case. The moment I started working with the new case, the storage fell from one 1000GB to 100GB. I checked on some forums and it seems that this was due to partitioning of the HDD and I had to create a new partition for the remaining portion of 800 odd GB. Once I did the same, I got the entire 900 odd GB but I'm unable to access my data which was stored in the 800 GB partition. When i try opening that, it says the disk is not formatted. Request any of you guys who know whats wrong to help me figure it out. I really need the old data as a lot of work is stored on that

Thanks in advance

Newbie. 1st post.

I came to this Forum looking for help re the above.

I installed Vista Business 32 bit for the first time, all went very well. I had shied away from Vista as I wasn't prepared to pay the high price when my W2k was running Ok. However, I came across a very nice ( read naive ) German person selling rather a large amount of Vista Business 32 bit on Ebay, ( turned out to be HP UK version ). He had kindly listed 30 plus Vista all with the starting bid of 1 penny. I along with several others got into him and bought for under ?13.00. ( I got one for ?5.00 and the other for ?10 ). After this he altered the price .
The install and verification went perfect, I then installed SP2 and the mountain of Updates. Then I got the Hard disk thrash about one minute after the desktop appeared, which kept thrashing for seven minutes, at which time it ceased and from then on never made a sound.
I tramped around the forums and got no joy until I came across this forum. I had tried all the things like disabling prefetch, Superfetch and Indexing etc , but no joy.
The prob was I couldn't see into which scvhost.exe was giving me the prob.
One of the threads here gave the tip on how to see under the exe and that got the prob fixed.
The fix was to disable BOTH Superfetch and Readyboost. No more thrashing.
The tip: When in the Taskmanager, click on Show users for all . Then R/click on the svchost.exe that was showing usage. Then select Go to Services.

My iOmega 1 TB External hard drive stopped working after it was accidentally unplugged. I googled the problem & found the exact thread here for my problem.
When plugged in, instead of being identified by it's name as before it's listed as Local disc (F).First I tried disabling write caching, to no avail so...
I followed the instructions I found here to the same problem started by fish778 in Aug 2011, Mark56 replied several times giving good instructions which I have followed but my problem isn't solved. I downloaded Sea Tools for Windows & ran both Short & Long tests which both failed.
The hard drive when dismantled is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB & my PC is Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pk 1.
The HDD has much loved photo's of my kids & tons of video & music too is there any way to retrieve it now or is it a hopeless case.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I think maybe if possible to get any data now, I would have to take it to proffessionals but don't want to get ripped off if the drive is totally broken.

Thanx so much if u can help @ all

Answer:External HDD shows as local disk F & it cannot be accessed

You could try going into disk management and deleting F: drive, while the External HDD is unplugged, then try reconnecting - OS might have just assigned the drive incorrectly?
Also strongly recommend updating to SP2 if possible (probably not connected to this issue though).
Hope this helps.

I tried to run fdisk/mbr, but the system cannot find the hard disk. I even tried to run Fdisk. What puzzles me is that when powermax diagnostics scanned for the drive, it found "via 596 primary master Maxtor N40P" .
The drive seemed to be working fine before I opened an attachment to an email. After the system froze I rebooted and had trouble with error messages (don't remember all of them). I tried to reinstall Windows XP but it cannot find the hard drive. I can boot to the A drive and to the CD drive. I tried to go from the A drive to the C drive, but it cannot find the C drive. I am at the end of my wits. Is this a virus problem or is the hard drive dead.
Can anybody help me solve the problem?
Is all my data lost? Oh no!!!

Answer:No fixed disk present message - hard drive failure?

Attach the hard drive to the CDROM cable on the secondary controller and run the MAxtor utility again. If it still fails then most likely your hard drive is dead.

I expect I'm missing something foolish.

running WIN 8 PRO 64-bit

After I had Win 8 set up with my basic programs, I created a custom-image using the CMD and the recimg.exe included with Win 8. [My laptop came with a C: OS partition and a D: partition].

I have since done two things. I created reduced the size of my C: partition and created an E: partition.

When I run the recimg.exe in the CMD(as admin) window, it starts to run and then I get the error message that the drive I instructed it to write to is not a "fixed drive". I've tried both the c: and D: drives.

What am I missing? Thanks for your help

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

1.5TB hard disk shows 1360GB,why?
The disk is empty/delete partition formated/create partition/EMPTY.
OS Win7 ultimate 64bit.

Answer:1.5TB hard disk shows 1360GB

That space is a discrepancy between manufacturer claims and real storage space. You hard drive is not 1500 GB, as perceived by the OS. It is less, and when you subtract the space of the format, the available space decreases.

So, what you are experiencing is normal.

I am a new player here, so excuse me if i make a mess of this. I have a Sony Vaiol laptop and am  running vista.  I haven't used it for a lot other than internet, so data limited and space is problem started suddenly when i turned on pc and a black screen with the error message,"disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to continuie."didnt do it! Wouldnt do anyuthing. Finally, I acquired legal sony recovery disks. And when the screen to choose operating system comes up, there is none so it says apply drivers and im lost, I have no familiarity with hard disk drivers so....but did bring up command prompt in recovery and through luck and lil else, i happened on chkdsk and found it to all check out but it does say NTFS not fat 32, but found no problems. Now Im dumb completely!!! Help if you can.

Answer:hard disk`??? wont reboot even with recovery disk yet all disk checks say fine.

Sony Vaiol laptop.Has problems of its own. It is not piratical to give you guidelines on this laptop. There have been many issues about how to repair and maintain it. The recovery discs should have everything you need. Here is a bit of advice, not really my own, try to sell the unit to somebody that thinks they know how to fix it. Then go buy a new or used laptop that will suit hour needs. The cost of ownership of any laptop is higher that many new users expect. Some more than others. This  may sound like a rant to put down Sony. It is not. Sony has made their own bed of nails. Look at this article from last year:Sony Vaio Laptop Recall: Everything You Need To KnowRead the article. You decide.

Answer:Why USB external hard disk show now " The disk need to be formatted"

Hi Elnene,

I am actually having the same issue regarding a spare external drive and Windows 7. The drive works perfectly on XP and Wii but the second I plug it into my laptop (windows 7) **YOU NEED TO FORMAT......** This is not an option! I have searched the internet far and wide - there are a few fixes that have worked for some but unfortunately not me. I also noticed that NONE / NO ONE / NOT ONE Windows 7 'Help sites' that have Windows 7 'gurus' have bothered to EVER answer this rather common problem. There are threads older than 4 years that have never been answered and I see your thread is already 4 weeks old... Sad really.

I CAN'T BELIEVE MicroSoft can't help regarding this issue???????????????????

In this time I hope you have come right!!!
Kind regards

One cable goes to the current disk and one of the cd drives, the other goes to the other cd drive i guess. So is the solution to replace the cable that doesnt have a midway connector with a cables that does have one?

My Model :1143A22, core i5 How do we know whether SATA III is compatible withThinkpad  E520.  SATA III having transfer rate of 6Gbps , whether my CPU can transfer at 6 Gbps ? In case if my CPU is not able to transfer at that rate I will go for SATA II (transfer rate 3Gbps) else SATA I((transfer rate 1.5Gbps). How to know the specification (transfer rate ) of CPU ???

Go to Solution.

Answer:Thinkpad E520, looking for new internal Hard disk

Hey there omcinside,
The E520 was shipped with the HM65 Mobile Express Chipset, and with at SATA II Drive. We know off the bat that the system will support SATA II for you no problem. Looking over the specs for HM65 Chipset, it states: "High-speed storage interface supporting up to 6 Gb/s transfer rate for improved data access. Provides up to 6 SATA ports at 3 Gb/s with up to 2 ports supporting 6 Gb/s transfer rates." So it should support SATA 3 as well.
I hope this helps.

I have an Inspirion 530 running Windows Vista with a 320 GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive (Western Digital WD3200AAKS) which I would like to retire.  A couple of years ago I bought an 8700 which is now upgraded to Windows 10 with a Hard Drive described as KPF74 Hard Drive 1T, S3, 7.2K.  Not sure of the make as I didn't remove it.
I would like to use the Inspirion Hard Disk as a second Hard Disk in the 8700, hopefully without formatting it.  As I don't know much about the interchangeability in this scenario I am wondering what my options are?   I am assuming that I can use the SATA cable that came with the Inspirion Hard Disk and plug it into SATA 2 on the motherboard as I have a DVD in SATA 1.
Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Hey all I have an Alienware X51 R3 and I was messing with my command prompt and accidentally changed what I believe is the path too boot my hard drive... In the command prompt I said

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\

I then reset my computer and now I get a "Internal hard disk drive not found to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices. Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter Setup Menu, F5 enter PSA"

I don't know what to do, I can boot my Linux OS by inserting my USB and I can mount my HDD and will have access to all the files in my drive.
I have no idea how to fix this, my computer will boot and instantly give that message unless I have my USB in to auto boot the Linux OS.How can I fix the path back to my HDD? Can I change anything in my hard drive through my Linux OS and make it work again? I don't even know how I would be able to reformat if I had no other option. What an I do?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found

This is my bootmgr entry, this is if you have a recovery partition as your first volume. If your boot partition is the first partition then the device value will end in HarddiskVolume1.

You probably just need to re-point path to the efi file.

I had bought an internal hd (500gb) an year back but due to some reason my motherboard was not detecting it. So I bought a case and made it external.
Now yesterday I bought a 2tb ext hard disk . So I thought that I should get rid of my internal 160 gb hard disk and remove the case of the 500 gb one and make it internal.

Now I want to format the 500gb.
Right now it is external but I'll be using it as internal. So I'm worried to format it just like that.
Is there a software for proper formatting of a drive or should I format it through the right click option.
If through the right click option then what should be the type ?
NTFS(default) or exFAT ?
And what should be the allocation unit size ?
There are many of them .

P.S. If I'm posting this in wrong section then please move to the proper one.

Answer:Help in formatting ext hard disk ( actually internal with casing)

Format it via the right click way,and if you want choose full format for safety, the the type is NTFS Default, and the size will be filled in by the pc automaticly,so just leave that as it is. There are other softwares to use,but this way is the fastest. If you want you can format it when you boot up you pc,via the bios setup. But doing it the right click way will be easier.

Good luck

I hope this is the correct forum?

I received my new desktop today and it is running Windows 7 OS.

I am using it for work and it has 2 x 320GB internal hard drives so that I can back up my work related files from one HD to the other, then if the number 1 (C: drive) fails, I have a backup on the second HD. This is particularly important since it has all my business related stuff (invoices etc.)

Anyway, I thought that I would be able to schedule a backup via W7, however W7 is not recognising the second HD. The wizard to schedule a backup is suggesting I use an external drive and does not recognise that there are actually 2 internal HD in the tower.

I have done a bit of research and I have found the second HD and initialized it. I have then set the HD up as GPT and I am now at the stage where the insallation wizard is asking for a Simple Layout and NTFS file system.

I don't want to click finish on the wizard if this is not the correct procedure to allow W7 to find the 2nd HD so that I can schedule the backup from HD1 to HD2.

Can anyone help and advise if this is thecorrect procedure please?

Answer:New Internal Hard Disk Drive Problems

You may have knocked the video card loose when replacing the HDD.
Make sure it's firmly in the slot.

If the PC has a built-in video chip, then make sure all the cables and memory are firmly plugged in.

When you turn it on, does the PC sound like it's turning on? (fans spinning, beeps, etc.)

Alright, so I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that's rather old and has several major problems, including never charging, overheating without a small fan next to it, and the occasional key falling off. Well, I was using it a few nights ago and it was working better than usual. Eventually, I turned it off and went to bed. Nothing unusual happened then, but the next day, when I booted it up, it told me the internal hard drive was missing and suggested I reseat it. I ran a diagnostic and it told me basically the same thing but this time it was accompanied by a happy little tune composed of loud beeps, as if to say: "Ha ha, I have found yet another way to ruin your life by becoming even more of an ungrateful mule than I already am, a feat which you thought was impossible but apparently isn't." As of today, when I try to boot it up, it doesn't even show the Dell logo before turning off. This is naturally a tad miffing, but I hope reseating the hard drive will help. Thing is, I don't know how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found.

You will need external media to boot into the Command Prompt, either a Recovery Drive or Install Media.  You may be able to download the install media from Dell and make a bootable flash drive.
Another alternative might be to boot into the media and run the command below.
bootrec /rebuildbcd
The real entry looks like the one below.. Of course, your volume numbers and GUID numbers will probably be different.
path                    \EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BOOTMGFW.EFI
While there you might do a bcdedit  to make sure it looks something like this.
indows Boot Manager
identifier              {bootmgr}
device                  partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume2
path                    \EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BOOTMGFW.EFI

Satellite a300 20p has 2 places for hard disk
Can i add another one beside the existing one?

Answer:Can i add an internal hard disk in Satellite A300-20P

You can check it yourself.
There should be an second HDD bay.
Remove the cover from the second HDD bay and check if there is an HDD connector (pin).
If you will not find any connectors then this would mean that an second HDD controller is not available and the usage of 2nd HDD is not possible.

Whenever I start up my Dell XPS 15 I get the error "Internal hard disk drive not found..."
I checked the BIOS and it shows the hard drive is there and also ran the Dell Startup thing that checks the different components and got no errors.

What do I do next?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found...

Run the Dell Diagnostics again but this time select the Custom Hard drive extended test. The hard drive has most likely failed.

So I've had my Dell Inspiron for about a year now. The other day, I tried turning it on, and it brought up only a black screen telling me to try reseating the hard drive. I figured I was supposed to take out and put back in the hard drive. After doing this twice, the screen keeps coming up. I would love to be able to use my computer again. Am I doing anything wrong? I still have a warranty for a week. Would that help with this situation? I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3541

I have a Satellite Pro P200 with a single internal hard disk. There is a second bay under the computer for another internal hard disk but I have not been able to find any information about it. There is enough space for a 2.5" SATA drive but I cannot see a connector.

I contacted Dutch Toshiba Customer support who said that it was the official policy not to provide any information about a second hard internal disk. They also said that they would not supply any parts to make it possible.

Can anyone provide some more information?

Answer:Re: How can I add a second internal hard disk to a Satellite Pro P200?

I think if there is no connector you can not add a second HDD.
It?s nice to have a second bay but this is nothing without a connector.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1526, 2 years old. It came with Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 back in Dec 2009.
I backed up my files onto an external HD the day before my system got this error. (3 days ago)
I physically took a picture of the screen with my camera to show what I was getting.
The first screen shows that internal hard disk drive not found.
Then I tried to do a "repair", and this is what it shows now ( i also took a picture of that too)

Test Performed:
System Disk Test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code OXO
Time taken 15ms

Root cause found:
System volume on disk corrupt
Repair Action: File system repair (chkdsk)

I have the original Dell OS says its Window XP service pack 2...however it came with Vista installed.
I also have the Windows 7 CD

Thank you

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found

Run hard drive diagnostics: (or sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Oh boy. Somewhere between the time I posted tonight about my computer running slow and now, my computer has completely failed me.

It's a Dell Inspiron 9300. About 4 years old. Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. The only thing I downloaded today was HJT so I could post a log on the other thread I have up.

I fell asleep on the couch, and when I awoke, there was a lovely blue screen with some gibberish about "if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart" and when I did...BLACK SCREEN and this horrendous clicking noise coming from the lower right-hand side of the unit. I should also mention the unit was so hot to the touch I nearly burned myself. Literally. It's gotten hot before, but this was honestly stove-top burner hot.

The message is "internal hard disk drive not found" press f1 to continue or f2 to...something. F1 gets me back to the same black screen. F2 gets me to bios where it confirms I no longer have an internal hard drive.

The good news is I have an external harddrive backup. The bad news is it was last backed up on 9/10 and I've done at least 20 jobs since then (graphic design) and three in progress with in-hand dates of less than 5 days from now. I'm just sick. AND I KNOW BETTER!

Anyway, is it really toast?! Help!

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found - PLEASE HELP!!

Yeah 4 years out of a Hard Drive is actually very good. There are a couple ways to retrieve the data. It just depends on how important it is. If it is very very important ($2500 important) than locate a data recovery center.

Hi royang67 Firstly check to see if there are any unwanted programs installed. If so, uninstall them. It will be worth running Disk Cleanup on your drive - type in the search box from your start menu/screen Disk Cleanup right click & choose Run as Administrator. Select OK on your C: drive. Once it has finished calculating make sure all boxes are checked, click OK, then Delete Files. System Restore can take up lots of space, so go back to Disk Cleanup now select the "More Options" tab. On the "System Restore & Shadow Copies" part, select "Clean Up" / Next, follow this guide, to do a Disk Check. If you're STILL showing as Disk Full, then it may point to a failing hard disk, and it will need replacing. You have made backups of everything, yes?

i've had a HP G42 398Tx for about five years, without any problem instead of it's DVD drive which failed after 6 months after purchase. But about 4 month ago it's HDD failed, after five years of reliable duty. It was "WD Scorpio Blu 500 GB". Then I purchased "SEAGATE Laptop Thin SSHD 500GB Hard Drive". after WIN 7 installation, it started to appear blue screen and restarted, and then showed "no boot device". when I shuted down the notebook, and turned it up after about 1 hour, then it started up normally and booted the OS. That happened several times so I thought the drive was defective, so I replaced it with, "WESTERN DIGITAL WD10JPVX-22JC3T0" and then everything went well for about 1 weeks. But yesterday it showed blue screen and restarted and showed "no boot device", just like before. Then I shuted down the note book and restarted it after 1 hour and every thing was ok. Now it's worked well for about 24 hours with no problem. Now my question is: what is the problem, and what is failing?Any response would be appreciated

I have a system with multiple physical drives.  The system disk shows activity in the graphs to the right side of the disk tab.  However, in the disk activity panel, where it shows which files are being read/written, it gives the wrong path,
to a non-existent location on the other physical disk.
For example, instead of the expected C:\Users\username\ntuser.dat  it lists the file location as D:\1\Users\username\ntuser.dat.
Every file listed in the panel looks like this.
The graph for disk D shows no activity.
Is this something I need to be concerned about.  The system seems to be performing normally.

Answer:Resource Monitor shows disk activity on wrong disk

What is the exact number of your multiple physical drives?
When you open  files in D, E, F or some other drives, what are the results in resource monitor?

Hi. I used to have my hard disk and a dvd drive plugged on the same 40 pin cable, and the other dvd drive on its own cable. I added another hard disk and put this on the same cable as the existing hard disk as a slave, and this works. however, i then plugged the dvd player onto the other cable - with the other dvd player and windows will not boot and i dont really no much about the bios setup, please help!

Answer:installation of internal hard disk stops dvd drive

Check that your 2 dvd drives are configured as Master and Slave. Also check that you haven't inadvertently loosened any cable connections.

Good day, I wish to upgrade my S10-4231's 160GB internal HD to a compatible 500GB unit.  What available disks have folks purchased to do the same?  Which of those worked out fine with no compatibility issues?  Which of those did not work?   I was thinking of the Momentus 500 GB 5400rpm from Seagate (ST905003N1A) but I see from the reviews at that some driver & compatibility issues with Lenovo systems have been encountered without resolution.  Other brands out there include Samsung, Fujitsu, Hitachi and Western Digital. Many thanks! David

So lo and behold this morning I found my internal hard drive disk was not working. I ran the pre boot diagnostics and everything else was working fine. I went to best buy and got another hard drive (1 TB SATA drive) and switched the old one with the new one. The computer still won't boot, but now the pre boot diagnostics recognizes the drive is present and says it's working fine. Any ideas?

Hi All,
I just purchased a new internal hard drive (Seagate Barracuda hard drive - 3 TB - SATA-600) to be used for storing data. Installation was simple, and Disk Management noticed it right away, with 1 problem: The free space is 743.48 GB, not the 3000 or so I was expecting. Disk Manager says it is 100% free. So the big question is: Where is all that other disk space?

Thank you!!

My DELL XPS 17 L701x laptop was equipped with Samsung Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200rpm hard disk. Last month, due to noise and auto shut down, i gave my system to dell service center for repair but took out my hard disk as it was containing "sensitive" data and i don't want to take any risk. Also i needed it for my dissertation. as my all data was on it. In the mean time i bought another Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200rpm drive as the xps has space for one more hard disk.
i put the samsung hard disk in usb case which need both side male usb connector. i was having an old connector which i tried to use but i can hear a little sound and it is not detected by my home desktop. so i got a new usb connector and it was easily detected and i used as usual usb external storage. when my laptop was fixed, i took back the samsung drive along with the new one to service center. and when they tried to place both drive, the system didn't responded at all, after some tries, they announced the samsung drive (which was originally shipped with laptop) has gone bad and is unable to detect. so i asked them to only fix newly bought drive in the system and make it workable by installing OS.
Now the issue is that my samsung drive can't be detected anywhere. neither in laptop, nor in my home/office desktop. though i was able to use it as external storage before but it suddenly stop working, leaving me nowhere. i have lot of important data on it and i want to recover it myse... Hello! I have a Dell studio 1735 laptop, with (seemingly) common problem and even more interesting spin to it.

When I boot, it sticks to the dell bios screen at about 95%, then shows up with this message:

"internal hard disk drive not found
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive."
(system beeps)
"No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics"

Of course, i press F5, it runs its full diagnostics, with flying colors (everything passes)
once thats done, it boots to windows fine, but its the ONLY way im able to boot to windows,i just dont want to have to do the full diagnostic EVERY time i turn on my laptop.. (plus i think that means that the HDD is going bad?)

I have reseated, checked connections, etc. i have pretty much checked all that i can find online about how to fix this issue, but no one else seems to have the same situation i do.

im not sure if anyone could help me, but im savvy enough to dump diagnostic files on here/etc.. i appreciate the help in advance

Answer:internal hard disk drive not found, until i run diagnostics..why?
