I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: dvd drive can't read dvd movie, but can read data dvd or dvd games

Shot in the dark...

Go to the Device Manager and find the entry for your DVD. Right click it and select properties then "Region" and make sure a region is set for the drive. Without a region set it won't play movie DVDs.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Hi- I'm running win 2k on a HP Pavilion with a HP Cd-Writer Plus CD drive. This drive will read audio cd's, but when I place a data cd in it, I get a windows message stating: "The disk in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"

I'd appreciate any help with this issue.

Hello All !

I have a CD RW which is also my CD-ROM Drive. When I insert any CD, the data on the CD isn't read at all, though the same CD works on other computers. Somehow I managed to clean the drive with the lens cleaner but I'm unsure if its cleaned. When I try to access the cd-rom drive from command prompt, I get the message that the device is not ready. I'm using Windows XP operating system. I would appreciate if I can get a good assistance in this regard to solve my problem. Also, I don't know how to format the cd-rom drive.

Thanks to All.

WinMe again! :o( The CD-RW drive will run audio CDs fine, but when a good data disc is tried I get the following: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate peremissions to access the item"Had this problem awhile back and rectified it with a firmware upgrade which I've now done again.I see that in both my drives' Properties "enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" is enabled, but greyed out. I've never enabled it in the first place, so assume it is ticked by default? Both drives have DMA enabled and the drive letter boxes can be changed okay.I've uninstalled both devices separately from Device Manager and physically disconnected them from shutdown, then reinstalled each one separately to let Windows install drivers. Also reinstalled soundcard drivers. Made no difference I'm afraid. TC.

Answer:Drive cannot read data CD

as I am not enabling it until the system is running fine again. Any errors, which I obviously have, would be carried over into the restore points. TC.

I was at a toss up on whether to start this in the Hardware or software forum, so I decided on here.

So anyway...I burned some data onto a dvd-r on a Windows 2000 system with Nero, and it reads the finished product fine on the 2000 system, but my Vista and XP system sees it as a blank disc, and Vista ask me how I want to go about adding files.

And Nero said the burn was completed successfully!! I know that doesn't always mean anything, but anyway...

I've googled to high heavan and find anything...anybody got any thoughts?

I tried installing my old World of Warcraft game on my Inspiron 1525 DELL Laptop, running Vista. I popped in the disc, heard it do it's thing, and then silence. I checked the Computer tab on the Start menu; no disc was found. I re-did it; same result. I tried it with another comp. game (Guitar Hero III) that I knew wasn't scratched because I played it not a few weeks ago (and didn't touch it from then until now), and the same thing happened. A few days ago, I was able to successfully install Norton 360 Antivirus from a disc, so this tells me that games won't be read, but other discs can(?).

If anyone has any tips on getting this to work for me, it'd be heavily appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Claney,
I don't see Vista being the problem since it can read many formats including NTFS and FAT-32.

I'd rather suspect it's all in the way you have the old drive connected to your new PC.

Your Vista HD should be on the end connector of the data cable and the Vista HD should be jumpered as "Master". (NOT cable select)
Then the old XP drive should be on the center connector on the data cable and it MUST be jumpered as "SLAVE".
Then the old drive should read properly.

Give that a try,
The Shadow

The USB itself is recognized in the device manager. It is a Lexar and shows that device is working properly. The driver is up to date. However, it shows there is nothing on the drive. Tried doing a search for this and came up empty. My problem in a nutshell is that I'm having difficulty reading data CD's. I was re-installing my OS due to too much corruption of data and viruses so I'm start from a scratch in terms of OS files.

To be noted: Manufacturer's install disks used ghost to install a new copy of the OS. Had to open and close the CD drive bay a few times in order to get the final CD be able to be read and complete the installation.

What I've tried:
update driver - no improvement
Uninstall Drivers and restart - no improvement
manually download driver - no improvement
tried using generic CD Drivers - no improvement

OS: Windows XP home.
Downloaded all updates. inc: SP2
Emachine T3065
Memory: 2GB

After browsing around google for a while, I came across a similar problem which suggested the cabling might be the cause of the error. as audio/video are past through different pars of the cable than data.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can't read data cd. can read audio

Ignore the cable issue, that's unlikley to be the problem
Analog audio is on a different cable, but thats seldom used by any PC these days.

The clus here is that it was dying at the end of the install by the sound of it. The laser output may have decreased to the extent that audio only is recognised due to the better reflectivity.

Start thinking about a new drive, but you would have checked all the cables anyway one assumes?

Windows 98SE
Sony DDU 1621 dvd rom

I need a simple explanation that tells me how to get my dvd rom to read data disks. It only reads audio disks and opens all disks in Windows media player. I dont understand how associations work.

Help would be much appreciated

Answer:DVD Rom will only read do I get it to read data?

No it doesnt read dvd's, but I am not really concerned about that, I dont think I have the memory anyway (64 mb ram). My old cdrom had a mechanical problem and I needed something to read disks, so I bought it from a garage sale and I downloaded the software from the Sony site. It used to function normally and read data files.

I want to format the harddrive and I need to know that the dvd rom will read my win98 disk cos it isnt at the moment. I dont understand how to do anything in file where the problem lies? Or is it in the cdrom properties settings area.

Hope this triggers something in you........I appreciate your help

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

A cousin gave me a 8GB dane elec usb stick which seems to be corrupt because it contains many files (all of them in a specific directory) which occupy ~1-2 GB each. There is over 20 of them. They have not valid windows names.
This seems to have triggered write protection. There is no switch to enable this on the flash drive.
Is there any software that can format the drive without giving a **** about write protection, non-valid filenames and the fact that an 8GB stick seems to contain 67GB of data???
Is there other ways to fix this USB stick?

Answer:Read Only Usb Flash Drive containing 67GB of data

Hello! I just purchased a T500 with a regular old DVD burner (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7910S) and am having an issue with it. The problem is that it will read certain DVDs just fine (a Visual Studio DVD, for instance, worked just fine. As did a Vista Ultimate DVD). Unfortunately, other discs are not so fortunate. Anything that contains just plain old data files (such as a disc of log files, a disc with video files, etc) won't load at all. The drive will spin up, spin down, make a floppy disk reading clunking sound, and repeat the procedure. So it seems that anything that comes from an ISO or an "official" source (Microsoft) works fine, but any time a disc was burned with Nero or the Windows burning thing(tm) it won't read at all. This doesn't apply to CDs, however, which seem to be working just fine. Is this an easily fixable problem? Could it be a problem with the hardware? It doesn't seem like that would only stop it from reading data discs, but I'm no expert. I updated the firmware to the latest version available on the download site (actually I did that before trying any data discs, so I don't know if it was an issue with the old firmware). Is it possible that it didn't update properly or something? Would it be worth trying (or possible) to redo the firmware update or to revert to the old version to test? Forgive me if I'm sounding ignorant here. Thanks for any insights! P.S. I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, if that makes any difference to anything.

My Seagate Expansion portable drive has 300Gb of data and been working perfectly. Now however I get a message to format the drive before using it or alternatively that it is not accessible - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. This is the same with USB2 or 3.
This seems to have happened after I got a flash message on plugging in that the device has not been recognized (or some such - its a brief message.)
The drive is recognized in Computer management and "device is working properly". The Quick removal policy is flagged and the driver is up to date.

Hi guys! I recently built a new computer and am having a quirky issue with my DVD drive and hopefully someone will know where to start. It seems that the drive will read CDs (opening them in iTunes) and music DVDs (playing in Mplayer), but the system completely hangs and freezes when trying to load a data disc. Specifically, the system will continually try and open the DVD (spinning away) and cause serious lag to the computer. When trying to eject the DVD, it will then cause the computer to freeze and require a reboot.

The data discs that I'm using are all programs that I've previously loaded on my XP install, so I know the discs aren't corrupt. I'm also running a 32 bit version of Vista, so I'm not worried about 64 bit compatibility issues.

The drive is a Lite-on (DH-20A4P) IDE based drive, set as Master on the cable. There are no other devices hooked to the IDE cable, and the cable is also brand new (came with motherboard).

Here's the steps I've taken thus far to diagnose the problem -- with no fixes working.

- Downloaded and installed newest drivers for the DVD drive
- Flashed the DVD drive firmware with most current version
- Uninstalled then reinstalled DVD drive through Device Manager
- Disabled autorun feature
- Checked connections from drive to motherboard

At this point, I'm not sure of what else to check. The drive obviously is working properly since I'm able to play CDs and DVD movies/music. It might be worth noting that I used this sam... Read more

Both optical drives are shown as working properly in Device Manager, but 70% of the time will not read data DVD disks. That includes data disks burnt using Nero and ISO Joliet format; and either mutli-session or finalized after burning. And disks formatted like a flash drive in UDF format using W8 burning software. And is the same for R or RW +/- disks.

Rebooting sometimes fixes the program, other times not.

I have an Intel mob and CPU but Intel do not support drivers for W8 so all drivers are generic W8. Running driver update from device manager says all drivers are up to date.

I also intermittently, but regularly, get the printer and webcam USB2 drives not detecting these devices. And occasionally the USB3 external hard drives. USB drivers are also up to date.

Any suggestions?

Hi all. Need assistance as most all PVR's record video direct to Hard Drive (Usually stock standard hard drives streight from manufacturer unformatted.)

If you take out the hard drive from a PVR and either plug it into your PC or use an external USB/Firewire etc to connect to pc. (With the correct connectors of course for the Hard drive.)

It should be possible to read that data and extract it to a formatted hard drive where it can be used.

Can anyone please provide information on the software that will do this?
(That is read raw data off a hard drive or PVR data.)

Niow as most all forums go you may get the silly commenters, but just for you it is possible to recover a formatted even repartitoned hard drive so the getting of a PVR's hard drive data is possible you just need to be in the know and know what you need.

Thanks to all in advance and hope for usable replies for all.

(Yes opening a PVR may void warranty. However if your PVR has a problem the data whatever it is on the Hard drive is Your property thus you have the right to ask the manufacturer or repair agent to remove the hard drive yourself or they do it immediatly in front of you upon presintation. Why well they will erase anything on the hard drive, possibly copy it once it leaves your hands you have no control over it or the data contains, the same with all technology that stores information handed for repair. And you will never know what data has been copied.)

Answer:Digital PVR Hard Drive read RAW data help???

Most PVR's encrypt the data, so even if you manage to copy the data off, it will be of no use.

I have this DVD drive that reads video DVDs and pretty much any other application of DVDs but it can't read data DVDs or install software from them.

Answer:DVD drive doesn't read data DVDs

How old is the DVD drive.
The most common failure item in a computer built in the past 10 years is the optical drive. The laser burns out, or the laser gets out of alignment, or the belt slips, or the drive wheel slips.
They generally last about a year, but if you use them a lot, they will fail after six months.
Luckily, they are very inexpensive nowadays. You can replace one from Wal-Mart, or Best Buy, or Target, or Circuit City, or the remaining CompUSA for about $$24 to $29 to $34 to $39. Four screws, and some cable exchanges, and you are done... if you can figger out how to get into the case.

I had a laptop running Vista which stopped working - I had the black screen of death when booting up and no systems would run. I tried booting in safe mode, but the same thing happened. I suspect this was caused by a virus, but am not sure.

I decided to try and salvage my data files by removing the hard drive and hooking it up (via USB adapter) to a laptop running Windows 7. The drive is recognized, but when I click on it, I can only see a .bak file. I ran Scan Disk, which scanned thousands of files, so I know they're in there, but is there a way for me to access them? Answer:Equium A60 - DVD drive does not read data discs

Hello Phil

It is not easy to find some explanation for such issues. What you can try is to create own data CD and check if the drive can read them. I recommend you to buy one DVD-R media from TDK. In last 7 years I have never had any problem reading/writing TDK medias.

Which media can not be read properly? Is this DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW?
Please give us more info.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

Hi people,

my Equium M40x with DVD Super Multi GMA - 4080N will read DVD's but not audio CD's or Data CD's. I have tried everything including deleting from the Device Manager and re-booting. The laptop sees the device and re-installs, but it still does not solve the problem. Audio/Data dics merely spin happily in the drive.

Any help much appreciated.

Answer:Equium M40x-189: drive can't read audio CD's or data CD's

It seems that the drive can reads DVDs but not any kind of CDs.
Usually such issues occur because of wrong lens calibration.
In this case only the drive replacement can solve the problem.

But this would be a last possibility to solve the problem.
Before you replace the drive try to install the DVD-ram driver from the Toshiba website:

Furthermore I would recommend updating the firmware.

I have a Toshiba M30X with DVD/CDRW combi drive.
I have accumulated 12gb of digital photo's that I wanted to clear but did not fancy the number of CD's that entailed so I purchased a LITEON EZ-DUB external DVD rewriter and made 3 DVD-R's full of JPEG's.
However, when I put these DVD's in the Toshiba combi drive, it clicks away for a moment or two but when I click on the combi drive in My Computer, the folder is empty and it says there's 0 bytes.
CD's still work, both audio and data, DVD movies play just fine, DVD-R's made on my Pioneer DVD recorder (for TV - looks like a video/nothing to do with PC) play fine, but it will not recognise DVD-R's with data (JPEG's or MP3's) on them.

It makes no difference which software was used (both Nero 6.6 and LITEON EZDUB) and it doesn't matter whether the discs are finalised, single session, multi session or what - it won't play any of them.
These discs however work perfectly in my 7 year old desktop with a 4 year old Sony DVD/CDRW combi.
I'm stumped.
I don't particularly want to reinstall windows in case it doesn't recognise the Recovery DVD and I seem to remember Microsoft One Note having to be activated by telephone with a code that is different each time you ask it to generate one.
It's a bit of a pain as I wanted to carry my photo's with me in my laptop bag.
I don't want to be carting around an external DVD writer just to read the DVD's.
I've updated the firmware for SD-R 2512.
It had no effect other than to freeze on an ... Read more

Answer:Satellite M30X: drive won't read data DVD-R's but plays DVD-R movies and CD's

Well, I can only make some suggestions.
You are able to place many MP3 and Jpeg files on the DVD.
Maybe this is a reason why the explorer cannot handle the DVD.

Try to burn the DVD with JEPG picture but don't make the DVD full with these files.
You should let a free space on the medium. Maybe it helps.

But it's very strange for me and this is only a suggestion. I have never tired it and don't know if it helps.
I had a similar issue on my notebook but I have solved it by using a compatible medium. Some drives prefer different mediums for different kind of files.

I recently replaced the hard drive in my 3 year old HP notebook. The original HD was an IBM Travelstar 20 gig and the new HD is an IBM Travelstar 40 gig. I am not sure if this is related to my problem but note it here just in case. After reloading my OS with factory provided restore discs as well as downloading other freeware such as hijack this and ad-aware se, my Sony CD-RW DVD combo drive will not read data or audio cds. It reads them as being blank cds and after the auto-run starts the box asking me what I would like to do with the inserted blank cd pops up. DVDs however play perfectly in the system. Obviously the drive was working when I reloaded my OS with the factory restore discs. I ran hijack this once after installing to establish an ignore list of installations on the restore that are not a regular part of my Windows XP Home but I have not deleted anything. I have upgraded the driver, un-installed and re-installed the drive, downloaded Windows updates (SP-1 and 2 and other patches) amongst other suggested solutions and have restored the computer back to when I first re-installed the OS all to no avail. The only thing I have not done is a complete reload of the OS. I have seen some solutions that speak about BIOS updates and configurations and HD partitions but they are in response to problems similar to mine but not exactly the same thing. I am reluctant to try those without more info. I am at this point thoroughly exasperated. I want to reload some picture and aud... Read more

Answer:cd dvd combo drive plays dvds but will not read audio or data cds

Well, here's what you can do to narrow it down to a software issue. You said the drive obviously was working when you reloaded your OS from the factory restore disks, which I have no dispute on. So how about rebooting with one of those disks in there again (the first one thats bootable), if it boots off of that again great, but be sure to cancel everything so it doesn't wipe your existing system.

Provided it boots from that your drive is still good, and it is something in Windows, something I can't think of right now though

I have a Seagate external hard drive hooked to my XP computer and it is working and backing up fine. When I initially set up my Vista computer - I simply hooked up the drive with USB port - and opened like an extra drive and copied what I wanted on the new computer. When I went to add some files today - it will not reveal those files and keeps telling me access is denied. I have searched and cannot find solution to this. When I look at properties on the Vista - it shows the space is taken up but will not open to the files that are clearly visible on the XP - most of the research I found talked about security settings and nothing I did made a difference - and the mystery is that it worked just fine the last few times I have done this - over period of 2 months.
Hope I am in the right spot - posted first message today and got a great solution so hoping that someone will know how to fix this easily.
Thanks so much!

Answer:My vista computer will no longer read the data on my external hard drive
I found the fix - it took me LOTS of searching - and two tries as I chose the wrong identity the first time - not sure if it is consistent but needed to pick the administrator as the owner and now it works as it did.
Hope this helps someone else.

Worth a read: Don't Panic! How to Recover Data From a Dead Hard DriveRecently I was recovering data from my friends laptop when I decided to see some different ways of recovering or backing up a hard drive.Through Google I came across this article:It tells you about hard drive recovery and how you can go about doing it. It then also tells you what the chances are for recovering from a drive that has gone through a mechanical failure (Gone through a natural disaster or dipped in oil).Upon reading this I decided to find software that can recover data in situations that the hard drive is a logical failure. Here I found:Clonezilla comes in a live CD that you can load into a computer and creates a partition or disk clone from your hard drive.[Bacula comes with a set of programs that can manage backup, recovery and even support doing so over a large network with different OS's.Redo Backup and Recovery can just about do that lot, recover, backup, partition editing, partcloning etc. and it comes in a live cd so you can boot it straight from the system. These are only a few free programs that I found from browsing SourceForge (best place for a community of people working on free projects) and it would be great if other people could sugges... I have 3 DVD-R disks with content (documents, graphics files, etc. ? NO VIDEO files) that was backed up from a previous computer. I cannot read (or even see) any of the content from these DVDs. I have an identical (type) DVD-R with video content, and it opens and runs just fine.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio and its DVD drive reads: DVD multi-recorder; DVD rewritable; CD rewritable. When I insert any of these 3 data DVDs, the DVD drive (F on my machine) that usually says ?DVD-RAM? next to the icon (in Explorer) now says ?CD drive? (although the icon itself says ?DVD-ROM? at the bottom of the icon). If I click on the F: drive icon, or attempt to ?open? files from the F drive, I get an error message that says ?F: not accessible. Incorrect function.? If I right click on the drive and go to properties, it shows that all the disk space is used (which should be correct ? each of the 3 DVDs should essentially be full of content), but I cannot see any of the folders or files on this drive, even when I click ?mixed media? as the file type to open (rather than video files). Again, inserting the exact same type DVD-R disk with video content into this drive works just fine.

I have attempted the same procedure on my Dell Latitude D600 (DVD drive reads: DVD-ROM; CD rewritable). The DVD drive in this computer shows up in Explorer as ?DVD/CD-RW drive.? When I insert one of these data disks into this machine and double click on the CDC drive icon, nothing show... Read more

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

Windows XP.
I want to edit an Mpeg 'read only' dvd burnt with Nero, my son has deleted the files on his computer. Using Anydvd to remove 'read only' I copied the files to My videos but Windows Movie Maker can't find file, which was untitled. Renaming with various file extensions did not help. Using UltraISO, there is a file mycd.ISO in My Videos; and with SoftDisc 1.6, a file I managed to name, but none of the file names are acceptible.
So the original files are Mpeg but I now have ISO copies. This is a once only operation so I will not be looking to buy programmes.

Answer:Editing a 'read only' home movie

The only way I know of is to have a program that will capture the movie and encode it back to MPEG so that you can have it on your computer. You can download a program on a trial basis so you don't have to buy it. Go to the link stuck at the top of this forum (the one I did) and download U-Lead Disc Creator. That will capture from DVD and encode to MPEG.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255. My cd-ROM has stopped working since I tried copying one of my children's games. I thought I would make a spare for my kids to both be able to play. I tried everything to get it to work again. I even called the company that made the game and told them what I did. They said it was not their software, that they have no copy right protection that would do that. Since then I have made a mess of my computer. I have restored it a million times in the system restore program. It is playing DVD's but no data cd's will play and it does not register any blank cd's. I went out and bought a Memorex external USB disk drive and recorder. I just want to recover my computer to factory settings using the recovery disks I have. The TEAC disk drive in the Toshiba wont read the recovery disks at all and the external drive reads the disk but when it reboots it looks for the disk in the internal and wont registers the USB drive automatically. I'm hoping their is a way to bypass the reboot and just start the recovery or any other solution. I even reassigned the drive letter and have since put it back to original.

Using CD / DVD ROM, I would like to read the raw data. I do know that the physical data are coded into (possibly) non-zero-return code, and then using Reed-Solomen Interleaved code, and had some synchronization data in between the data bits.

While I do not expect that I would be able, using software alone, to get all of this, but at least I'd like to get as low level as possible.

My aim is research-related. I would need to place the head at specific location and would like to read tha data there.

Any advice much appreciated!

Edit: after I fixed it I tried several data CDs that worked but the next time I restarted is when the problem returned.

Answer:Data CD not being read

Once you choose a default action for a CD, USB Drive, etc - It will not ask you again when you insert it subsequent times, unless you install a new program that can open it, and then it will notify you that there are new programs that can open it.

Open "My/This Computer" and look at the drive and see if it reads - It could be that the drive is insterted and reading. Also, make sure the CD or DVD is clean, and has no scratches on the TOP. A scratch on the bottom can be buffed out with a compound, but a scratch on the top will take Data away with it. And, sometimes Data CDs and DVDs that are burnt fail very fast. Sometimes, even manufactured disks do the same.

If it will not read or if it reads some times and not others, it may need a BIOS update, some Optical Drive makers like Lite-On in particular, seem to fail right at the moment a new Firmware Revision is available. You will have to know your exact make and model to look for new Firmware, you can find this out with Aida64:

I have a Pioneer DVD R/RW running Easy CD Creator 5.0 Basic Edition (with all updates). The Data copies okay and can be read in the Pioneer but when I try to read it in a normal DVD Player I get a message saying Windows cannot read from this disk.Do I need to change the format ?

Answer:Cannot read DVD data.

This is confusing me. When you use it in a normal DVD player Windows cannot read from this disk? What do you mean by a normal DVD player - a DVD ROM mounted in another computer, or a standalone (in which case, where does Windows come into it?). Can you let us know what sort of files you are writing and in what format they are being written? If the data can be read back from the drive that has written it, then test it in a third drive. If this refuses to read then it's probably the writer at fault. If it reads OK, then go for the first DVD player, if you follow my drift. If you're talking video files, then post back as life gets more complicated.

The puzzling thing is when i click on properties of the cd drive with this 3rd cd-rw in the drive, it says that it has 697mb of data on it. But when i use the explore option the window shows nothing on the cd. I've even used Nero to try and open it which is what i used to burn it, but still no luck...
I'm starting to panic as it has all the code/images etc for my bands website on it as well as holiday photo's.
Before i deleted all the data off of my old pc i checked to see if the cd-rw's burned ok (using my old pc), and they did.

I have a strange problem. I recently tried to install a game on DVD (DVD-ROM) and when I put the disc in the drive, well, basically nothing happens. I can hear it start to spin up as though it's trying to be read, but it just chokes and starts from the beginning again. (This happens about 5 times before it goes silent.). When, in Windows Explorer, I double click to open the drive there is nothing there, as though the disc is empty (There is no custom icon either). Also, even if there isn't a disc inserted I can still open the drive in Windows Explorer - which is odd, no error message telling me to insert a disc etc..

BUT, the computer can still read CDs and DVD movies, so I can't see how it could be a problem with the laser that reads DVDs. Now, you may be thinking well, it's just a faulty disc, but no! I've tried it in another computer and it works fine. (And anyway, it worked fine in my computer the first time I used it just after I bought it) Also, when I come to think about it, I tried to load some other DVDs that I'd burned and they didn't work either.

Things I've done to try and fix it myself include uninstalling and reinstalling the drive in the device manager, trying to load the DVD in safe mode, pressing F5 while the disc tries to load, removing the upper and lower filters in the registry and reinstalling the system ASPI (which Nero InfoTool reported as being corrupt), all to no avail! I was having problems from my Compaq Presario. It was opening programs on its own. Running out of memory with only one or two applications open. I have 512 MB RAM. I tried to reload the original recovery CD but there was a problem. Compaq had me buy and load some quick restore discs then load the recovery CD. I did all of this. Prior to stating these procedures I backed up all data from my applications. I backed up the contents of "My Documents" to A rewrittable CD. After reloading MS Word I tried to reload the data from the CD and the computer wouldn't read it. I determined the CD-RW was not working correctly. I installed a new Memorex 52x32x52 CD-RW. I put the disc in the drive and opened Explorer. It took forever for the F:\ drive to read the CD and put up its title. When I tried to copy this to "My Documents" the program freezes and never displayed the contents. I went to "My Computer" and opened the CD and all of the contents were displayed. I clicked on the edit drop down menu and clicked select all. The I tried to move it to "my Documents" and the computer freezes again. Is this data corrupted? Is there a way to retrieve it?

Answer:Can't read data from CD-RW

It sounds like the Disc have errors on can download this app. called CDCHeck (free)

Check the disc with that and you'll probably find errors...that app. also recovers the files on the disc, but it'll be VERY SLOW...if its a big file you want to recover, it can take DAYS...literally...I've tried ahahahah...and the file you recover will probably have problems with it...for example, I tried to recover an MP3, and after it recovered it and I listened to it, there were spots filled with silence or skips or just plain noise...but if you're desperate, its better than nothing right?

So what CD-RWs are you using? And what CD-RW drive did you use to burn them? I'm just curious because I had an old 4x Pioneer CD-RW and was using TDK CD-RWs, and EVERY single burn gave me CRC errors eheheh...but then I got a 52x32x52 Lite-On, and no problems...

Definitely check out CDCheck, its a great app.!

If you want to create CDs, that you can add information to at a later date, you need to create multi-session CDs.
Once a CD is finalized, unless it's a CD-RW, there's no way to write to it again.
In the case of a CD-RW, it can be erased, then re-written to.

Lets start with this.

I have an asus p5p800-vm mobo, a pentium d 2.6ghz (i know the d isnt the best but whatever), 2gb of ram, a creative sound blaster audigy se, 1x80gb sata 7200 rpm hdd, 1x200gb 7200 rpm sata II hdd, 1x250gb sata II 7200rpm hdd, and a saphire radeon x1650 pro with 512mb ddr3, sony dvd player, and lg burner.

Not a horrible pc to my standards.

Now WoW runs fine (my subscription is running up and im bored of it anyway), and genereally speaking prey runs fine. Now Wow never used to run. Basicaly everygame except prey the videos played fine, liek everythign worked except when I went to play games its like i had a sticky keyboard all my commands would lag to **** but the mouse was fine, video was smooth etc. So i formatted and the same problem was there. I bought a new copy of windows xp pro and it has ALL of the updates on it, and everything. Then WoW worked fine and prey would run a bit better, I also noticed a slight increase in pc performance.

Now except for the above two games all the video lags, like its really choppy (even on lowest settings), and I have updated all the drivers. I have had this problem for months and its driving me crazy as I have soem games I woudl liek to play and I cant figure this out.

The games Ive tested that lag (liek my computer is too ****ty to play them): cs source, half life 2, half life 2 deathmatch, half life 2 lost coast, prey, wow, pariah, tomb raider legend, tomb raider anniversary (which i want to pl... Read more

Answer:fast pc but games lag.. please read

Ok, so you did some hardware check, you have multiple hard drives, which one is the os on? I see that you reformatted, did you try putting stuff on another HD, if you have multiple items/programs pulling from all these drives at the same time, it could cause some issues, did you think about that? Obviously its not your vga, and I high doubt its the keyboard, lol.

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

Nice. I had scrutinized it hard enough already with a steel hat, so I'm still safe.

Hehe, Veesta is a beast! Most corps, even NIST, MIT, UDoD and ASUS as the largest MB MFG detests it. Not fit for mass consumption eh.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

OK - I have a disk that has info on it because I read it a short while ago and there is an exe file there. When I go to windows explorer and look for my D drive where my CD rom is, it does not open the program. I have tried everything and on more than one computer. No error messages - nothing - eventually Explorer tells me the program is not responding...
I really need the program that is on this cd - I could even copy it to another IF I could get the data to open.

Answer:Cannot read data on CD - DESPERATE

Try to copy the data off the CD into a folder on your computer, and running the
program from your computer instead.

If you recieve an error during copying, click "retry". If after a few attempts, and a file
still fails to copy then we know what the problem is.. Either the file is currupt, or CD is bad.

Hi, I seem to have a problem whereby I cannot view/read data cds I have created on the same PC. My D (DVD-RAM)drive shows nothing in Explorer and when I click Properties the General tab shows both Used Space & Free Space equal to zero. This has happened on more than one cd yet when I insert a pre-recorded audio cd it works perfectly. Anyone any ideas what is wrong or how I can fix it? Any thoughts much appreciated!

Answer:Unable to read data cds

Are you usimng CD-Rs or CD R/W's ?It could be you are not burning the CD correctly, the burning circuit/laser is faulty or your burner just doesn't like the media (make of CD) you're using. Not sure why you describe the burner as DVD-RAM - it should have CD burner capabilities if you want to burn this media - most are but some aren't.

when i click on a file and try to play it says disc error, cannot read from disc--that typical crap message...

same message when i try to copy the files to the hard drive.

i have tried isobuster and cdroller with a bit of success getting a couple files off the disc.

is there any way to copy the disc including all bad sectors if that indeed is the problem? maybe it will work better reading directly off the hard drive??

any ideas anyone has would be wonderful.. i can't replace these movies.. i'd even consider a commercial recovery company if anyone can recommend an affordable one

also, it won't read on other computers either.. same problem even if they have xp

Ok here is the situation.

I noticed yesterday on my WD Green drive some data was slow to read e.g. excessive time to start playing video file, and at same time was read errors logged in SMART so decided to order 2 new drives and move the data.

Today I got the drives, swapped some cables round as one of my red's I realised was on the asmedia controller and I want all my red's on the intel controller, and installed the 2 new WD red drives.

For reference here is the setup

Intel controller

Samsung 850 pro ssd - system drive
WD Black 640 gig
2 Existing WD red 3TB
2 New WD red 3TB

Asmedia controller
WD green 2TB

Out of case temporarily due to lack of SATA ports
Samsung 750gig

Now today something unexpected happens, I am sorting out the data that will be going to the new redundant setup and suddenly I notice when trying to play a video stored on the hdd the hdd light is on all the time and the video isnt loading, task manager reports a constant high speed been read (in this case 140megabyte/sec). Explorer gets the not responding status, and killing it stops the i/o. I repeat and same file again same issue. I deleted the file. After checking over some other files same problem again on another file, I discovered tho after leaving it 20 minutes the video did actually start playing. Now some more weirdness, it seems I only have to highlight the file in explorer for the everlasting i/o, I dont even need to try and load the file, so selecting a bad file is enough for a ... My HP Notebook will play dvdroms, but will not read data cd's. It worked fine until my son opened Musicmatch for the first time, then it quit seeing data cd's. I have contacted HP with some response from their tech support, which was to re-format my harddrive from a cd

It seems to be software, it came with roxio 6, but I am not sold on that. The dvd's play fine and when you load a cd XP shows that it has a cdloaded then it seems to loose touch with the cd???

Help, HP wants me to either reformat, or send the notebook to them for repair.

Answer:Hp Cdrom Won't Read Data

Try This:
Start/My Computer, right click on the offending drive and select properties. On the Autoplay tab you can choose an action to perform when Windows detects certain types of cd's.

I can "see" the data on my DVD visually, but the drive that wrote the data can't. It thinks its a data CD and can read one file, but all the important stuff was burned as a data DVD disk. Is there a program out there that can recover my data?

I have a WD400BD(40GB-1st image) HDD for my OS. Currently, this is the only hard drive in my PC that is connected.
I also have a WD1600AAJS(160GB-2nd image) HDD witch is faulty. It is from my old PC and i really need to regain some important data. I tried to install Windows XP in order to run it separately, but the installation fails.

It doesn't have bad sectors, but for some reason i can't boot up with both drives connected simultaneously. Windows 7 freezes @ the starting screen (3rd image) and stays like that until I restart.
On my motherboard i have 4 SATA II ports- 40GB is connected to port #2 (#1 doesn't recognize it ).
I also have 4 sata cables, and i tried replacing them (suspecting on a bad cable ) but nothing changes...

Any type of help will be gladly appreciated!

Answer:How to read data from a faulty HDD

Is the "bad" drive detected in the BIOS?

As the good drive is not detected in slot 1 suggests a problem on the motherboard or BIOS. Reinstall the ASUS provided Intel motherboard chipset drivers and see if that helps.

Will Windows boot to Safe Mode with the "bad" drive connected? If you can get it booted to safe mode you can copy off what data you need, assuming the drive is not totally bad. However, as Windows will not boot with the drive connected suggests there is more wrong with the drive and you may not be able to recover the data.

This is a good lesson on why backups to a separate media is needed - not for IF its ever needed but for WHEN its needed.

Okay, I just reformatted my computer and went to put in an old backup disc I had because I forgot to backup my fonts onto my external hard drive...anyway my CD drive AND my CDRW drive both cannot read the data disc. I also tried opening other data discs each different brands some which I had been able to open previously and they did not work either. I'm not sure if the drives stopped reading data CDs before or after the reformat but I DO know that I could not BURN data CDs BEFORE and after reformatting and WAS able to in the past. I reinstalled all software that came with my computer so I don't understand what the problem could be...could windows updates have messed it up?

Answer:Cannot read or burn data cds!

You could see if they might be disabled by checking in device manager/hardware/ and then check properties. From there you can update or roll back the driver. Worth a look and try for you anyways! If it don't work let us know.

Greeting all.

I purchased the ASUS e616p2 DVD-ROM drive a few months ago and have been having a major problem with it.

After every few boot-ups, the drive would stop reading any CD/DVD data/media. It would detect a disk and display it's contents/tracks, but when trying to open/play them the computer would either hang or give a read error.

WinXP has the drive in Ultra DMA Mode 5, if I switch to PIO only, the disks will read fine, but Audio CDs and DVDs will play very poorly in this mode.

I used to have to open the case and unplug/replug the secondary IDE cable to solve the problem each time it occured. However that no longer works and I'm stuck with a brand new DVD drive that won't read disk files.

At first I thought it may have been an IDE cable problem, I bought a new one but still no luck. I have a second Asus CD-RW drive installed as the secondary slave (the DVD jumpers are set to master on the secondary cable), which plays/reads CDs fine.

Before I give up and purchase a different DVD drive, is there anything you guys could recommend?

Thanks in advance. (System specs in profile)

Here's my problem: I was running windows Me, and backed up all my data files to CD-R. The PC had Adaptec EasyCD 4.0, although I did not specifically use this to burn the files - I simply used the file manager to drag and drop the folders I wanted to copy onto the burner drive. I don't believe I closed the session after copying, and it did not ask if I wanted to. After this, I wiped the hard drive clean and did a clean install of Win XP Pro. The burner drive will now not recognize any data on the disc, and just tells me it is a blank CD. The drive does work, as I was able to play a burned audio CD on it, but data discs it doesn't seem to recognize. If I do in fact need to close the data CD-R so that I can read it, how do I go about doing this, seeing as EasyCD 4.0 is not supported on XP? Is there some type of patch I can d/l to get access to my data? Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello,I have a strange problem, which might be caused by some hardware limitation, orby my ignorance in USB protocol (I have no advanced knowledge in USB).I need to read keys from a USB device (some kind of keyboard). When doing itunder Windows 2000/XP, everything is fine. When doing it under GNU/Linux though,I always get a timeout, even though by ignoring the timeout I get the dataright (but it doesn't always work, it varies according to the kernels andarchitectures used). After trying everything I could think of, I finallydecided to dive into intimate USB protocol by snooping over raw USBcommunications. For that, I used the snoop feature in usbcore [1].I wrote a simple program that initializes the USB device, read keys for 10seconds, and terminates. I first ran the program on a Windows virtual machine, and as expected the keys were right. I then compiled and ran the same programon GNU/Linux, and as expected, I got nothing else than timeouts. Then I went tocompare the logs: the working one, and the non-working one. Codes don't seem tobe tampered with in any way; the only real difference seems to lie in a subtledifference at the beginning (interrupt urb instead of urb complete). From this point I'm stuck: I have no idea whether they are correct regarding tothe standard. I have no way to force some kind of trick to simulate the workingone from GNU/Linux, as it would probably mean tampering with the kernel (evenfor testing purpose, I am not exactly confident). Ther... Answer:Can't read data from USB device

The problem is solved: it was a difference of behavior between Linux and Windows kernels. If a buffer of 32 bytes is provided for reading and only 8 bytes are available, the Windows kernel will provide the 8 bytes and return 8 as the number of bytes read. The Linux kernel will wait for aditional data, won't get any, and therefore return a timeout. Plain and simple...Thanks to people who read
