Preferred Solution: Media is Write Protected

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Media is Write Protected

i hate external drives that require software to run. unless its only drivers you updated.

now if it were a desktop id suggest taking the HDD out and sticking it in your pc.. but thats an issue here.

If you have another computer to try it on then i suggest trying that. When ever ive had the old "write protected" issue its normally only been with flash drives and its because they are duff.

Also as an after thought, a system restore to a date when it worked may pay off, but its probably a long shot

when trying to transfer a file from laptop to desktop external drive. i get the message that the media is write protected, this seems odd as i write to it quite often,
when i access the laptop via the homegroup and copy and paste to the external, it copies fine ,so i am perplexed as to how to remove the write protection ,ive had a look in security in the properties on the external but they look fine and all the permissions seem to be set correctly. any ideas.
its a real pain as the most space is on the external and i want to empty up the laptop

External 2.5" Seagate Momentus 320Gb HDD.

Recieved from my father-in-law, he says it doesn't work. So I take it and there is no power at all. I take it apart and replace the USB connector and I receive power. However, trying to initialize the disk in computer management windows 7 says "the media is write protected". Computer management labels it as a "CD-ROM", now I don't know if this might be an issue, or it just does that until the disk is initialized. I tried diskpart and modifying 'writeprotect' in the registry but neither worked.

I also loaded up Win XP x64 to try it there, but I received pretty much the same results.

Thanks

Answer:The media is write-protected

Under Windows 7, launch the registry editor (press Windows Logo + R, type regedit, then press Enter). Navigate then to this registry path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePoliciesRight click on writeprotect and select modify. Set the value data to 0, then click OK. Do the same with ControlSet001 and ControlSet002. Close the registry editor and restart your system. Try then to access your external storage device.

Well the obvious steps for file access come to mind.
Take ownership of source file.
Check that it's not set to read only.

Hi, everyone

I have a problem that i couldn't find a fix to it, it is really annoying

My External WD HDD 640GB not initialized, but the big problem is that when i want to initialize it i get an error message says "The media is write protected"
It is an external HDD so i don't think it has a turn on/off write protection switch, so how i can turn the write protection off?

Note that when i use DiskPart in CMD, it doesn't show the HDD because it is not initialized, also i have tried changing the value of WriteProtect from 1 to 0 in regedit but it didn't solve the problem, in addition i'v used 3rd party programs but i keep getting that frustrating error message

I have a machine at work that is running windows 8 64 bit. Windows had crashed so we put on a new Windows install last week, C: was formatted and reinstalled with Windows and then encrypted with bitlocker, D: was decrypted so we could get get the data off and has not been re-encrypted.

I came in this morning to find that D: could not be written to.

When trying to copy a file to it, it says:
The disk is write-protected.
Remove the write-protection or use another diskClick to expand...

I have tried the following solution
http://www.pcworld.com/article/245174/restore_access_to_a_write_protected_hard_drive.html
I check my user permissions and for my user I have full access.

Next we were able to successfully format D: and I didn't do a quick format, not that it may have mattered... and after that didn't work we completely replaced the drive with a different drive and it still did it.

So its not the drive, its something with my install. I don't have anything suspicious I didn't have installed before so I am not sure why it is doing this.

Thank you so much for your time! The tech just wants to format again so if I can figure this out before it comes to that then that will be awesome. It would be nice to not have to redo 2 days worth of work setting up my dev environment...

Answer:Solved: The media is write protected

Also to add confusion, if I did system restore, to before it happened, it would work until next restart? I don't know if it is just some company policy that is set up on restart or what...

After installing an mSata SSD as my main boot drive for Windows 10 Enterprise I can no longer write to the internal HDD.
I have checked the read only status in disk part and everything is correct.
If I pull the drive from the laptop and insert it into a usb dock I can write files to just fine.
I am running out of space in the SSD and it really bugs me not being able to use my HDD.
Thanks for any input.

Answer:The media is write protected on internal HDD

Have you tried switching the internal HDD to a different SATA port when using it inside the PC enclosure/case? I'm curious if this is a property of just one SATA port or all of the available ones in your machine. If you can try plugging it into (or switching cables to use) a different SATA port, it may solve your problem (in which case you'll know it was the port) or not (in which case the drive becomes a more interesting suspect -- "interesting" because you can write to it when plugged into an external dock). For the nonce, you might want to just use it in your dock so you can write to it while we're getting this figured out.

Hi everyone,

I am in a bit of a pickle and am in need of your help. I have a newly built rig which I dual boot Vista HP 32bit and Win7 Ultimate 64bit. Up until about 3 days ago, I have been able to use my external USB backup drive, transfer music to my phone’s memory card, and use my thumb drives. Now every time I try to transfer something new to one of them, I get this.

“The disk is write-protected.

Remove the write-protection or use another disk”

I booted into Win7, and I was able to transfer files with no problems at all. As soon as I go back into Vista, can’t transfer or delete anything. Please help because this is really getting frustrating! If you need any more info let me know!

I am trying to set up a Vista Business computer to send and receive faxes. Right now I am stuck on the sending part.

Every time I try to send a fax, the following error message appears: "The message could not be sent. The media is write protected".

Details: I have three new computers hooked up to a domain controller running Server 2003. Two of the computers are running Vista Business, one is running XP Professional. One of the Vista machines and the XP machine are both sending faxes with no problems. The third computer keeps giving me the aforementioned error.

- I have tried placing the folder locally (on the C drive) since we are using folder redirection for the desktop and my docs. Still, no luck.

- All the permissions seem to be set correctly, based on the permissions of the working Vista machine.

-The fax is just a new fax with the text "test" on it.

- The only difference between the two Vista machines is the brand of the 56k modem used. Could the modem be causing this>

Anyone every seen this before or have any ideas for me?

Thanks!

Answer:Fax: The message could not be sent. The media is write protected.

Same problem after HD D unit ("data") substitution.
I have deleted and recreated FAX account (tools -> account fax).
Then, I have reboot PC and problem is disappeared!

Using DI 7 on a regular basis to back up C to D drive I normally am asked if the existing image should be overwritten. Clicking Yes the copying proceeds. On this last occasion I was presented with "The Media is write protected" dialogue. To get around this I create a new folder and proceed.Question is: Why has this suddenly changed? There is nothing untoward from previous images, just a regular cleanup of system, uninstalling an unused program etc and updating the image.

Answer:Drive Image 7 "Media Is Write Protected"

No idea but you can change it by going into explorer, right click the Image file and change the file attributes to Archive remove the tick in write protect

Hey guys, my friend gave me his 1.5TB portable HDD (WD1111B or 1110B) because he said he didnt need it anymore but also the fact that it has gotten a problem i havent encountered before. I can in no way seem to be able to reformat this drive. It also doesnt seem to appear in My Computer but does appear in device manager when the drivers when installed.

I have so far tried the following things.

1. CMD Disk list (at one point it listed it and some poeple say run the command attributes disk clean readonly which didnt work and when i tried regular clean it diappeared from the list)
2. I tried WD reformatter but it it failed
3. When i tried easeUS parition master free edition comes up with this error message (There are some error occurred while writing partition chains on disk)
4. In Disk management it shows the disk is unknown, not initialized and when i choose to initialize with MBR (master boot record) it comes up with the media is write protected

Any ideas?

Answer:Cannot reformate External HDD. Media is write-protected

Hello MajorFoley!

Could you please write the model of the drive once again as what you've given is somewhat incorrect?

If when trying to Initialize the rive, it says it's write protected, the write protection has to be first removed from the device. Recently there has been a similar problem here on the forum and I gave the steps there also:

1. Open Command prompt: click Start, type command, click Command Prompt
2. Type "diskpart" and press Enter
3. Type "list volume" and press Enter
4. Type select volume #, where # is the number of the drive that's giving you the "write-protected" error
5. Type "attributes disk clear readonly" and press Enter
6. Type "exit" and press Enter

These steps should make the drive read and write enabled again. Then it can be Initialized, Partitioned and Formatted, like already explained. To see which volume you have to type in, you need to see your partitions and see what diskpart's giving as information.

This should work if the hard drive is not damaged. You could check if it has any physical damage with the WD Data Lifeguard Software:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downl...id=810&lang=en

You could also try writing zeros from top to bottom to "refresh" the drive's state and then try and Initialize it again, see if that helps.

Did anything help you?

Best of luck!

After composing a fax in Word 2003 and selecting "fax" in printing options the fax composing screen comes up where I enter the fax phone number and choose cover page. After completing the information and I click "send" I get the message:
"fax error: the message could not be sent. the media is write protected". I have checked the files and they do not show write protection.
I have 2 identical Toshiba Satellite L455's- the only difference is that this one is 64bit and the other is 32bit.
On the 32bit machine, using Word 2003, I am able to send the fax created on the 64bit machine without getting the error message.
How do I correct the incorrect write protection message?
Thanks, Bob

Answer:fax error: the message could not be sent. the media is write protected

Hello bnwell and Welcome to SevenForums.

I'm going to suggest that you pose your question in the Microsoft Office forum of SevenForums.

When you do please be clear about the machine generating the document, the version of MS Office generating the document, whether the document is .doc, .docx, .txt format or whatever and which machine has the fax attached.

Dear community,
My WD external harddrive has suddenly stopped working after coming from Europe. I plugged in the HD into my laptop and I noticed that it does not show up under My Computer, only under Safely Remove Hardware and Devices. So I searched forums a bit and a couple
have said that I should go to Disk Management and see if my drive is there.
Turns out the HD is listed there, however as 'Disk 1: Unknown 1.379 GB, Not Intialized'. There is no blue bar either, it just says the size of the disk and that it is unallocated (it does not have a Volume letter).
When I start up Disk Management it gives me a notification:
Initialize Disk
You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.
Select Disk:
Disk 1
Use the following partition style for the selected disks:
MBR (Master Boot Record)
GPT (GUID Partition Table)
So I click on MBR and press OK, and it gives me the error 'The media is write protected'.
So I go into the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePolicies
and change the value in 'writeprotect' to 0, and then I reboot my computer. Same error.
I can't even reformat the disk because I cannot find such option, not that I want to really, because I have 1.2 TB worth of data on there that I want to keep so losing the information on this Drive will be quite.... frustrating.
Any help is appreciated.

I've sent a message to our security and malware removal specialist asking her to take a look at your problem and see if she has any suggestions. Unfortunately, though she was here when i started the message, she had logged off before I sent it so it may be a while before she responds. In the meantime, try the following:

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems. This may restore the virus as well, so it may need to be removed again, but I would hold off on the procedure you used before as it seems it caused a lot of problems. Let's let our expert advise you what to do if we can at least restore you to working condition but even if we get it working again, I'd try to avoid using it as much as possible - especially going on the internet - as using it may spread the infection (but you c... In the event log, Event ID 1125 is logged:

In the Details tab:

When I run ?gpupdate /force? or ?gpupdate /target:computer? After a long time, I get the message: ?Computer Policy update has not completed in the expected time. The laptop is part of a large domain (more than 10k clients). This is the only one with this error (for as far as I know?)
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok long title but here's a rundown of the problem:

My friend was formatting his XP machine to install a clean Win7.
I went ahead and backed up his stuff on XP via EASEUS To-Do Backup utility onto a laptop HDD USB enclosure.
We installed Win7 on his machine.
We plugged in the USB Enclosure with the backed up data.
We then went into the EASEUS program and mounted the image file.
We went to access his User folder in Documents and Settings and got the error:
So I clicked Continue and then got the error:
So I went into the Security tab to add the current Username I was logged into as being able to access the folder and then I received this error:

There is no switch on the laptop HDD or USB enclosure to write protect it so I don't know why it's giving me this error. If anyone knows please help me out, thanks in advance!

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

Answer:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

Hi there. I was looking for a solution to an issue I've been having and came across this forum. Maybe someone could help?

I recently had a few problems with my PC, leading to me replacing and swapping different components. I originally had the SSD as my main drive, having windows 7 OEM installed on it. when I had to replace my motherboard, I couldn't get the SSD to work. So i installed windows 7 on my hard disk and just removed the SSD completely.

Now I have purchased a full copy of windows 10 and a new CPU, and am basically looking to use my SSD as my main drive again. I plugged it back in, and tried to access the SSD in file explorer where i got the error "D:\\ is not accessible. Media is write protected".

I googled the issue, and tried using Command Prompt to reset the readonly in DiskPart, but this still didn't work.

When I look in Disk management, It says everything is OK, showing as healthy. As you may have guessed,I'm really pushing the limits of my knowledge at this point. anyone have any suggestions? I've taken screenshots of everything if that helps?

Answer:Can't access SSD as "media is write protected"

That must be a bad joke from MS - "Write Protected", "RAW", "READ-ONLY",- that all the problems a lot of people are facing with W10 Upgrade.
I believe it is a W10 Problem and any attempt to "repair" it may lead to Data Lost. I lost 1TB of Data on that "russian-game"!
So, what I suggest you very much is to Roll-Back to your previous OS. Insisting on resolve the issue may lead to Data Loss, as there is no problem with Hardware, definitely the OS is like a bad "Sherlock Holmes" that is seeing a Bandit every where.

My McAfee virusscan detected the [email protected] virus. I'm unable to do anything with it (delete, clean, quarantine). I get disk is write-protected error. I try to browse to the directory it's in and I can't see it. I've changed folder settings to show hidden and system files. I'm running XP and still can't see the folder it shows up in. I've run viruscan in normal and safe mode. Still can't do anything with it. I've included my Hijackthis log.

Answer:[email protected] and disk is write-protected error

You are using an old version of Hijack This. You are also running HJT from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Now Click here to download Hijack This again. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
    ...to format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

Question: Write Protected?

Hi, I'm new to the Windows Vista world. My old computer (XP) crashed and Vista is what was available.

I can't seem to restore any of my data for my accounting programs with Vista. Usually the error message is that the disk is write protected!! My hard drive?? I am trying to restore data from a CD to my C drive. Another message I receive is that the disk is full. I still have 74Gs of memory left. Is this Vista or McAfee? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Write Protected?

How are you attempting to restore the data? What accounting program are you using (and is it Vista compatible?)?

Hi - Can anyone help? I'm using windows XP and I?m having a few issues with Roxio's drag to disk on my CD-RW discs. I?m trying to copy some files onto disk to save them (they consist of .doc files and .jpg / .bmp). I can copy them onto the CD-R discs no problem but when I try to copy them to the CD-RW ones I get the error message ?CANNOT CREATE OR REPLACE ?FILENAME?: ACCESS IS DENIED. MAKE SURE THE DISK IS NOT FULL OR WRITE-PROTECTED AND THAT THE FILE IS NOT CURRENTLY IN USE?. Can CD-RWs be write-protected? If so, how do you un-write-protect them! I have tried formatting the disk to no avail... I'd be very gratefull for any help. Thanks*jo*

Answer:Write-protected CD-RWs?

You could try this freeware, but it will only run if you have .network installed click here, usually formatting it solves the problem, or it may just be a rogue disc so try a different CDRW first.

I get the message that these are write protected. Meaning the formatting is missing? No message to say so.
Can anyone resolve this please?

Answer:Write Protected New Cd-rw & Dvd-rw?

What is the exact message you are getting. It may refer to the images you are trying to burn to disk. In which case right click on the image file and select properties and see what is checked there.

Also if you are using rw cds you may need to format them first. Your authoring software should have an option to do this.

Answer:HD write protected

Hello rscadden!

This is unpleasant. I hope the following would help you.

1. Type cmd in the Start Menu
2. Select Run as Administrator
3. You should now see the Command Line Utility
4. Type in DISKPART and hit Enter ( here the values associated with your USB drive could be changed)
5. Type LIST DISK and hit Enter
6. Type SELECT DISK and the number of your drive which is write protected and hit Enter
7. Type in ATTRIBUTES DISK and Diskpart gives the information you need about your drive
If the first line is written as Current Read-only State: Yes, then the drive is write protected.
8. To remove the write protection with Diskpart, type the command ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY. If it works, it should be confirmed by the line Disk attributes cleared successfully.

Good luck!

Hi, I have a problem with a brand new USB stick, PNY 64GB I bought on e-bay about two months ago. It started working properly, I transferred on it about 20GB of my photos. I did not notice anything weird. The pictures were there and I think I could even move them on and off, like copying and deleting. After few days, when I wanted to erase them, there was a message that the device is write protected. USB? There is nothing to switch it for write protection like on SD cards, for example.
From that moment, the device once was recognized as inserted in the PC, other times it was not. I could not delete the images, I could not format the device and even the KillDisc software, after running nearly 5 days without a break could not sort this out. There was an error message at 99% of process and I could do nothing else than to skip it, which resulted in the problem persisting on the USB.
Now I cannot even view the files, despite after this treatment I could have seen them few days ago. The files, after I clicked on them, showed mostly unaffected photos in the views, but when I wanted to see any particular photo, all of them appeared to be damaged - there was a grey area on the majority of the photo, just a thin area of the original picture could be seen on the top of the picture.

I have contacted the seller with this problem and they offered me the refund or replace, even assured me that the item will go to the manufacturer.
However, I guess that there are phishers outside j... Read more

This is making the advice the security experts give just too hard to follow.
One of the security experts recently had one log with over a hundred files, they guy had to format c: drive.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.

Hello guys,

This is Ekant this side. I am using Acer Aspire 5742Z from more than a year. However, since last month I am facing a "Write Disk Protected" problem, for which I didn't get a single workable solution. I hope you guys can help me with this.

What my actual problem is:

I have a 500GB hard drive, and I have created three partition namely; C:, D:,and E:

C drive is of 99 GB, D drive is also of 107 GB, E Drive: 285

But last month, when I booted my system, I could only find C Drive, and all other drives were invisible, don't know why, and increased my C Drive Disk Capacity from 99 GB to 465 GB. Then I tried to look for a solution on many forums, and found that find and mount can help me out with my invisible partitions, and I installed it instantly, and it really helped me finding my invisible partitions. However, now I need to run find and mount, every time I start my laptop, to mount my invisible partitions. And if i don't run it, the windows explorer shows on C Drive with a disk capacity of 465 GB.

And to my amazed, soon I discovered that both D Drive and E Drive have become 'Write Disk Protected', and neither I can create and file in any of those drives, and nor I can delete any existing files.

Now when I am trying to format my computer with new copy of windows 7, it doesn't read the DVD, and nor the USB Flash Drive (Both are boot-able as they are tried and tested on another computer).

Hope my issue is clear to all of you... Read more

Answer:Write Disk Protected

this is why.
Mounting partitions
After Scan finishes, you will see the full list of found partitions. Now, you can add any found partition to the system by mounting and assigning a letter to it.

All partitions are mounted in the read-only mode. You won't be able to alter files on such partitions, but only to copy files off that partition. This guarantees that the data cannot be altered by the operating system or any software (including malware).
if possible remove the laptop hard drive and connect to another Pc via a usb cradle and try format from there,(ntfs) if that works pop it back in the laptop and try installing windows again.

HelloI have an mp3 player which, when I try to delete or import files, tells me the disk is write protected and I cannot add or delete files.I have looked around on the net and seen advice such as going into the properties of the file, but this did not work. Can anyone suggest a fix for this please.Thank youRichard

Answer:Write protected mp3 player

Several reasons why this can happen on a USB device1. corrupt file on the deviceformat the device or run Kill disk (remember this will wipe everything on the device).2. the device has a write protect or hold switchmove switch to correct posititon.3. Incorrect setting in windows Storage Device Policiesdo a "regedit" for StorageDevicePolicies key.. Get into the Registry - Press Start -> Run, enter regedit, press Ok. Click on My Computer. Then press File -> Export, give some file name to backup the registry. Just incase you ever need to rollback.. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/StorageDevicePolicies. In the right pane select "writeprotect". RESET the value to '0'Repeat the same for ControlSet001 and ControlSet002 incase they exist. Now plug in your USB drives and it should work. Else just reboot the machine and try. This has worked on most of the machines on which I tried.

The first thing I can think of in such a scenario is that you have some type of
malware infection that can be causing denied write access.

Have you scanned that drive with a good (currently updated) anti-virus program?

Answer:Write protected in my pen drive

From here: http://www.w-tweaks.com/html/sp2_external_usb_sticks_proble.html

In case the key StorageDevicePolicies does not exist, right-click on the Control key and select New/Key. Name it StorageDevicePolicies. Open this key and right-click on an empty spot in the right-hand side of the window. Select New/DWORD Value and name it WriteProtect. Enter 0 to deactivate the write protection.Click to expand...

Mind you, it's not in mine either, and USB are fine
You haven't just flicked the little switch on the pen drive, that write protects it have you? (some don't have this though)

Read ALL of this please before commenting a possible fix.

First off, this is a 32gb Sandisk Cruzer flash drive and it's USB 2.0, my OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64x SP1

Things I've tried:

Using regedit to set the WriteProtect Value to 0:

I've tried formatting it through the GUI:

I've tried formatting it in CMD and I get no further than selecting the disk because it cuts me off at cleaning it:

I've also erased and rewrote the registry entry for the WriteProtect key, and I tried it with a 32bit D-WORD as well as a 64bit D-WORD. I have tried every recommended option for fixing this problem, to no avail. Some said to also put it in an Xbox, but when I do, both 360, and Xbox One, both say that nothing can be done until write protection is removed.

A lot of people tell me to "Flip the write-protect switch on the side." but they don't understand that it's a FLASH DRIVE and not a MicroSD card reader. My flash drive has no flips, no switches, no nothing. I have also scanned it with the highest rated anti-virus for the year 2015, which is BitDefender Total Security 2015. No viruses, no issues. I have done EVERYTHING I have found online even remotely related to this problem, to no avail.

Some flash drives do have a switch. I treasure the very old one that I have with a write protect switch. I have to use something very small (like a pin) to actuate the switch. But you would probably know it if your flash drive had a switch like this somewhere.

You might try formatting it via Linux.

I just did a very stupid thing.... =/

My external HD was write protected for some odd reason, but when I checked the security settings, everything had write allowed. So I try to do a reset by unchecking write and then checking it again, but now I cannot check write again because I do not have permission to write (accidentally unchecked write for SYSTEM D=). Is there a registry fix for this or a way around this? I am running Vista 64-bits.

Answer:WD external write protected

Is it for all USB devices ?

Try by cheking this one on regedit

KEYNAME "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies"
VALUENAME "WriteProtect"

I used alchol 120% to burn a dvd rw and then after some time wanted to burn something else on it. but while formatting there is an error message saying " disk is write protected".

With windows 7 ultimate i was able to rightclick and format the disk ....

again i burn the same disk with my laptop having windows 7 home premium. IT IS AGAIN GIVING THE SAME ERROR.

i have tried other softwares to erase or format that disk but it failed.

i also read other posts regarding this matter on number of forums but no satisfactory answer.

is there a security issue with alcohol 120% or is it windows 7 home

Thanks

Farooq

Answer:Disk (dvd rw) is write protected

Try uninstalling Alcohol, then burn with Imgburn or CDburnerXP (both are freeware, download them).

I have a write protected usb memory stick and i cant use it because its write protected, for some reason????? i cant even format it!!, it has no valuable data on it and can be wiped, i just want to be able to use it.

Answer:Erase a write protected usb

Go to Computer, and right click on your USB drive and click on 'Properties'. Once there go to the 'Security' tab (top of window). Below 'Permissions for authenticated users' there is an 'Advanced' button. Click on it. On the 'Owners' tab, there should be an 'Edit' button. Now, select your username in the bottom box, and make sure the checkbox at the bottom is checked. Click on okay, then once it has changed ownership, click on Ok on all 'Properties' windows. You should now have full control of your USB memory stick.

I'm trying to erase some old backup CDs and DVDs (in XP) but with every one I am told it is write-protected. The data varies from docs to sheets to True Image or Geniesoft but the response is always the same. I have tried removing the write-protection but on trying to apply this get the error message "An error occurred applying attributes to the file. Access is denied" Several previous entries in this forum seem not to have resolved the problem for others. Help please.

Answer:DVD is write protected and cannot be changed

Think you may need a firmware update for your drive that often sorts out the write protectou could try imgburn and see what that throws upon the error log it will also check for firmware updates Tools>drive>firmware updatesclick here

Not too much info on the card, as it isn't mine. But it is a 16 gig Samsung Class 2 MicroSDHC card. Previously used in an AT&T Samsung Android phone (has big touch screen... don't know model).

Anyway, card has somehow become write protected. Obviously, since it is a MicroSD, there is no lock switch. Data can be read from the card, but nothing can be written to it nor can it be formatted, either from Windows, the Panasonic SD Formatter, or my other Samsung phone (Samsung Reality). How on Earth does this happen??? Can anyone give insight on how to fix it?

Answer:MicroSD is write protected

I have no idea how this has happened but, reading through a few other forum threads it seems the trick is to cover the slot on the side of the card so when it goes into the adapter the tab in the adapter cannot drop into the slot.

Another suggestion I saw was to put the card in a digital camera and use that to format the card.

I did get this information from other peoples suggestions so sorry if it does not apply to your reader or card.
