One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

Question: One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

Preferred Solution: One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - 10.5.0.1015 - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

Whether I choose any option other than to turn PC off, instead of tapping spacebar on my MS wireless keyboard I have to tap the button for power on the tower, then the monitor turns on as the fan runs, but always a black screen. So then I have to do a manual boot and select to start normally.

Started a week ago, around the same time as a graphics card failure. I installed a new PNY GeForce, updated ALL drivers on my Gateway DX4710-UB301A, (Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, AVG antivirus free 2014) played with power management and startup config settings, trolled forums, performed malware scans, and still can't figure out the issue.

I used hybrid sleep for a year without any problems.

Suddenly, since this week, Windows can't wake from it. It starts loading, I can hear the fans and the HDD spinning, but the screen stays black.

I then have to power it off completely and turn off the PSU for a few seconds to boot into Windows again.

Everything else works fine (normal booting, restarting, regular sleep, hibernate...).

I already:
- reinstalled Windows
- tested RAM with Memtest
- tested the HDD for errors
- reset BIOS

Any ideas??

(Motherboard is a GA-EP31 DS3L, a SATA and a PATA HDD, 5450 GPU.)

Hi,

Since installing Windows 7's SP1 and the mid-April security update packages this year, I've had very frequent BSOD/reboots on, or very soon (< 10 mins), after waking my PC from sleep. They average out to every other morning wake (when computer completing tasks overnight) and around one in eight other wakes. There are no minidumps for September because I accidentally turned off error logging.

Otherwise, the system seems perfectly stable when heavily multitasked, editing large video files or in graphics-intensive gaming. In the first 17 months of its life the PC BSODed 3 times, twice due to graphics card drivers with their own problems.

The Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Full retail - single OS, one original installation) PC is:
Home-built (2 years ago)
An i5 720 with
4GB (2x2GB) GSkill Ripjaw 800 DRAM,
Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4 motherboard,
XFX ATI Radeon 5850 video card,
1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HDD (2 partitions + System) and
Corsair TX-750w PSU.
Internal, 4-year-old Sony DVD-RW & DVD-ROM drives.
USB peripherals include a couple of WD HDDs.

The system is currently set to use the hybrid sleep power setting which is by far the most appropriate for me. Within that setting, I have varied the USB power states for peripherals but with no effect.

Attempts to fix the problem include:
removing an older Creative sound card and flushed out the lingering drivers.
uninstalling older anti-malware programs (& their drivers): AVG, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aw... Read more

I leave my computer on 24/7 so that it can update itself with Windows update, to run AVG virus check and etc. Should I be putting the computer into hybrid sleep instead to save on power?
Will the scheduled programs wake up the computer and run properly. I read before that there were some issues with waking computer from sleep mode.
Dell Dimension 9200 running Win 7.

Answer:Will computer wake up from hybrid sleep to check for updates?

Anything listed as critical will wake the computer - this can be seen by looking for the "wake this computer" checkbox checked on a scheduled task. And yes, WU will wake the computer when it's scheduled to run, even if in a sleep state (including hybrid sleep).

Question: hybrid hard drives

I just read a blurb in PC Mag about Vista being able to derive major performance improvements by using a hybrid hard drive (HHD) and that one should wait to buy a new computer (if you can) until systems start shipping with the HHDs. Question: Are the HHDs going to have a standard SATA interface? How about 2.5" laptop HHDs? IOW could I replace my SATA laptop HHD with one of these? Faster performance, greater battery life... what's not to like?

hello i was creating a slide show to put on a dvd and when i was done i went to switch off my computer accidently hitting the sleep button and i hit the restart button and went to work came back but it was still acting like it was asleep my computer say no signal check power cable and such so i've unplugged everything and i have even tried the default analog monitor with no success i switched of my system from the back for about 30 seconds then powered it again and then it turns on switched itself off then turn't itself back on what is happening?

Edit: the mouse and keyboard have no power when i switch the computer on but i have lights in my machine which are working and so is the cd drive. I was wondering if this could be a power supply issue or maybe a motherboard issue.

recently my pc running winblows xp started putting itself to sleep, its not suppose to, i never set it to do that, i looked at the power management settings and they havent been altered, they are set to never do this to me, yet it is doing it. when it happens, i cant get it to do anything, i cant wake it up, the mouse and keyboard both fail to respond and i have to turn the pc off and back on. the only thing i did before this stuff started happening to me is an update on spybot search and destroy, i emailed the makers of that program and they claim that s&d wouldnt cause this(but under the circumstances i have to be skeptical) what is doing this to me? how can i stop this? its annoying the crap outa me

Answer:why does my pc now go to sleep? wont wake up

Do a system restore to before you updated Spybot. That update shouldn't have affected it at all. Worse case scenario, go into power management and create a custom scheme and use that.

Hi, this from another post covers your problem:-

Quote:

Hi, since this revolves around "hibernation" lets take a look there. Your hibernation settings are contained in a file "hiberfil.sys" and if it is corrupt could be the cause of your problem (none of this will do any harm). Lets clear the file:-

Open a CMD prompt (as administrator, accessories right click command prompt select "run as administrator)

At the prompt type:-
Code:
powercfg -h off press enter
reboot to take effect
This will disable hibernation and clear the hiberfil.sys file.

After reboot open another CMD prompt (as administrator, as above) and type:-
Code:
powercfg -h on press enter
reboot to take effect
Now go to this site and apply the recommended settings for power saving (inc hibernation) read it all.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63...-problems.html

Hopefully this will resolve your problem.(don't worry about the vista applies to 7 as well)

Adam

The video driver provides the signal to keep the monitor out of standby so if it is corrupted somehow it might not be able to come out.

check the driver in device manager

This happens primarily when I am playing a game. The screen turns off, pressing the keyboard or the mouse does not do anything. I have to hit the power button to get out.

I checked all the sleep and power settings, everything is set to never.

Answer:Display wont wake up from sleep

Are you using display port?

I had that issue with my 6970's and 7970 on my U2412m. Something about hibernation causes it. I turned off hibernation and the issue went away. I still let the display turn off after 10 min.

I used to have to either unplug the displayport cable and reattach it, or unplug power to the monitor and reattach it.

Hello, I hope you can help me!I have this problem: When I set my notebook to sleep mode or I close my notebook (I have set "sleep" asi action after closing the notebook) it just wont wake up... I open in - nothing, I try to push the button for starting - I can hear it booting, but after few seconds the notebook is quiet again and nothing happens. All I can to do is trying to turn it on over and over again and after 10 tries it finally starts. Sometimes helps plugging or unplugging the charger.I don't have this problem with hybernation mode.I own ThinkPad E535.I hope it's Windows 7 problem or something with drivers. Answer:Windows 8.1 wont wake up from sleep mode!!!

Maybe it's just really sleepy? *hears drum being hit in background*

sorry...erm..yeah was too tempting.

To my knowledge there is no real clear reason as to why this happens. You would think in so many OS systems with the wake/sleep function that they would had perfect it by now huh? You may get some people suggestion checking your drivers, energy/wattage issue/etc. I personally don't believe any of that though myself. If it can operate while you are on it just fine but you turn it off and it won't come back on it sounds more like an OS issue than anything else.

I used to have the same issue with an old old Acer Aspire 5720z. I never found a real solution to it either.I truly think the only "cheaphax" here would be for you to just disable sleep mode.

You could see if this helps you any but I highly doubt it will.

I just got my T540p and I've discovered that the display will never wake from sleep. I hear the computer beep and see the green light on the power key, but the display stays dark no matter what. I hit the keys, trackpad, etc... and nothing. This is a brand new machine and I dont want to send it back. Why wont the display come back from sleep? I am running Windows 8.1, fully updated. BTW, I thought I would try reinstalling Windows 8 from a USB drive. This computer wont boot from a USB drive either. One step forward with a great display, two steps backwards from Lenovo with a display that wont wake up and the inability to boot from an emergency USB.

Answer:T540p display wont wake from sleep

I have the same problem when sleeping. However, I do think I have a potential solution to your USB drive problem. If you have UEFI, then you will have to make your USB drive bootable under UEFI. The one you made for legacy BIOS will not work. Hope that helps.

A few weeks back I upgraded my laptop and since then my computer started acting weird. My battery had until then been perfect, but now it drains during one night when computer is turned off, sleeping, closed lid etc..Also, as soon as I let it rest, close the lid or simliair it wont wake up again. The keyboard lights are on but notning except a hard reset works.Sometimes I do the hard reset and find that the internet webpages sometimes are "saved" and opens up when I power up again. The fan has also started to wound alot more recenlty. My guess is that some downloaded upgrade caused this but I dont know how to fix.I have tried downloading all the latest drivers etc.I have also tried a ton of tips from different forums regarding power settings, hybernation and such but nothing works. All of this happened right after the bad update so I know that the problem is not the battery itself..Thank you

Hope im putting this in the right thread.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50-110US laptop with Vista.

have not had any problems with it until a few minutes ago. I was moving it so I closed the lid and unplugged the power cable with it still turned on. Whenever I do this it goes into some kind of sleep mode which I can sometimes get it to wake up from and other times I have to reboot. I couldnt get it to 'wake up' so I tried rebooting, waited a few seconds and started it back up, but it still seems to be sleeping.

It will start up and I can hear stuff moving around inside, the power button and the internet-connection button both turn on, but the internet-connection button is orange instead of blue (only does that while in sleep mode that ive seen) and the screen remains black. Also the button to toggle the touch-pad on/off lights up but it does not respond to hitting it.

Ive tried rebooting it 3-4 times but it never 'wakes up' and the screen remains black.

It has worked  ok for nearly a year.  Now when I put the machine to sleep by selecting window->shutdown->sleep, it goes to sleep. However, when I come back to it, and scan my finger etc, I find the machine has completely shutdown, and is booting from scratch.  Then, when it gets to the winows part, it hangs on the finger print reader icon.  I can hear people rining me on skype etc, so winows has booted, but the dam FPR wont get past the login.  I ahve to hit escape, then click on manual login then bam, Im in a fully booted up windows. I remember this happening a few times in the early days. It only seems to happen in the doc (with a fully charge battery and on mains power). I live with it. The problem is the machine takes about 3 minutes to boot on a good day, I seem to spend all my life waiting for it to boot.  I have started using my toshiba R830, which has identical apps installed, which boots in under a minute to work untill the W520 has "warmed up".  The W520 boot much quicker if I dont use the FPR.  the FPR seems to hang somehere every time.

Answer:Since 2 weeks, W520 wont wake from sleep in Doc.

Try to uninstall FPR, reboot then reinstall the FPR and see if it helps.

I was on my computer this morning for about an hour, everything was fine. I went to turn it off but hit sleep by mistake. Then when I tried to wake it up it wouldn't and i went to work and forgot about it. Now I've come home and it still wont turn on. I've turned it off at the switch and tried again, but all that happens is the fans turn on, blank screen, no start up beep. please help ! I have no idea what to do!

Very frustrating... My X1 Carbon, using Windows 8.0 (due to corporate policy I am not allowed to upgrade to 8.1 nor downgrade to 7.0) which includes 4 Gigs of RAM, and an Intel SSD, if placed into sleep mode (either by closing the lid or pressing the FN-F4 button), will not wake from sleep mode if the machine has been in sleep mode for a while (guessing anything over an hour.)  Yes, Yes, I know pressing the FN key should bring the computer out of sleep-mode, but the FN key doesnt work.  The only thing that works is to completely shut-down the computer and turn the computer back on, which naturally causes the machine to completely reboot. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Not long installed win7, now i find that when its in sleep mode the usb hub / wireless mouse and KB are sort of "disabled" and i cant wake up the pc unless i plug an ordinary kb in the usb on the pc itself.
ive tried plugging the wirelss receiver directly into usb port on pc but it still doesnt wake up as the mouse is disabled.
Now ive set the pc to never go to sleep,

any other options? what else can i do?
the wireless mouse and kb are both MS and ive downloaded the v7 drivers - Intellitype and I/point.

thanks for any help!

Answer:wireless mouse/KB wont wake pc from sleep mode

Hello Cavair,

You might see if plugging the wireless USB receiver directly into the back of the computer instead of a USB hub to see if may work for you instead. Afterwards, check in Device Manger in the Mouse and Keyboard "Power Managemet" properties tab to make sure that the "Allow the device to wake the computer" option below is checked.
Hope this helps

I tried everything from disabling hibernate to resetting power options. Nothing has worked so far.
Everytime I put my computer to sleep it wont wake up. The monitor wakes but the computer will not boot into windows. I need to hold down the power button and cold boot.
Anyone else have similar issue on this bug?

Answer:Computer wont wake from sleep after Creators Update.

Yes. I am having a very similar problem on my laptop. My problem is when I open my computer, it should wake, but instead the monitor stays off and the computer is unresponsive to any input. I then have to manually restart my computer. This seems to happen completely at random. Some days I can put my laptop to sleep multiple times a day and no problems, but other times I may have to force a shutdown 2-3 times a day.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

My computer is to be having some problems booting when it has been asleep/hibernating/turned off. At first it seemed to be just when it had been asleep or hibernating, but recently it wont boot after being turned off for a short while (an hour or so).

What happens, is that after turning it on, I get a "No signal" message on my monitor, and nothing shows up on it. The computer turns on, it makes the usual noises, but no signal comes through to the monitor.

The only way I can seem to get it started after this is if I leave it unplugged for a while, usually at least an hour and a half or so, then it will either boot from scratch or resume Windows from sleep/hibernation.

I never have the problem turning it on at the beginning of the day when it's been off all night, so it's as if it needs to be off for a long while for some reason.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD A10-5800K and Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H, with 8GB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

I recently purchased a Thinkpad X120e (0596) and am genneraly very happy with it however when it goes to sleep the screen does not wake up when the laptop does. when i wake it up i hear the fan spin up but the the screen remans powered off. ive tried waiting several minutes and it still doesnt wake up, ive also tried holding the power button for several (more than 5 ) seconds to force it to power off fully then start it again and the screen still doesnt wake up. the only way i can get it to work again is to make sure to unplug it and remove the battery for several seconds then i can get it to boot with the normaly expected complaints from windows after an abnormal shutdown.I have the latest updates from lenovo and microsoft installed including the latest firmware. I like the laptop so i would rather report the problem and provide any information neccisary to find a resolution than have to return it. Ive seen this problem with other laptops before and know its probably a  bug in the firmware thats not waking up the GPU is ther any tool i can use to provide the debuging info or any more direct way for me to report the bug I tried calling customer support and they told me they told me my only option was to return it and they could not report or record the issue.

Answer:x120e 0596 screen wont wake up after sleep mode until unplug it and remove the battery

I'm experiencing a similar issue. After resuming from suspend state, the screen won't turn on sporadically (in about 50% of cases). However, after hard-resetting by pressing the power button for 5 seconds and turning it back on, the screen would also turn back on. No need to remove the battery. I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 and, to my knowledge, it doesn't seem to be an issue with the O/S.

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

Thanks.

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

If this is in the wrong forum, please move to the correct forum.

I am running windows 7 64 bit, and have 4 external hard drives attached (not the best way, but until I can afford a server, the only way).
I am using my computer as a media center only.
When I wake my computer it can take a while (30 seconds to a minute), before I can use it, due to it starting up my external hard drives, but I have noticed a couple of times, my computer will wake without starting up my external hard drives (able to use media center within 2 seconds).
Does anyone know if there is a way to get my computer to wake up without starting up the external hard drives every time?

Answer:Wake computer without waking external hard drives

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.

I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.

I would much appreciate any help on how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

I use these forums a lot when I have a question, but I have never had the need to post before, so this is my first post. If this is in the incorrect sub-forum, I apologize.

Answer:External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I have EXACTLY the same issue, it's unfortunate no one replied to this

I also set all my drives to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and everytime I delete a file anywhere ALL external my drives wake up

Is there really no way around this? Is no one else having this issue? Does no one else have an external drive attached to his PC that he wants to sleep while idle? Why is Windows checking ALL the RECYCLE.BIN folders on ALL drives when I delete a file on ONE drive?

It would be really great if someone knew something about this, preferrably some way around this, so the drives can stay asleep when I do not intend to access them but just delete a file on a different drive.

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

My wife's computer has been displaying an error ever since I enabled Hybrid Sleep & Hibernation on her computer:

Dell Vostro 1400
Vista Business SP1 - 32 Bit
Intel T7250
3GB RAM

I created a customized power setting for her that did the following when operating under batteries:

Shuts down monitor after 5 minutes
Shuts down HDD after 15 minutes

In advances, the relevant (I think) settings are:

Sleep after - 15 minutes
Allow Hybrid Sleep - yes (on battery)
Hybernate After - 120 minutes (on battery)

When she shuts off the computer by closing the lid, the computer goes to sleep no problem. If you turn it back on within 2 hours, no problem. However, if you turn it on after the 120 minutes, she gets a message that "Windows has recovered from a serious start up error". That being said, we have not found any ill-effects after acknowledging the message. I have also attached a screen shot a details from the event viewer that captured each time it has happened.

In the interim, I have disabled Hybrid Sleep, but left the hibernation on after 120 minutes. I set the computer to hibernate, and it restarted with no error messages.

Any thoughts as to the cause of this? Is the solution a simple OS bug, and I should simply leave Hybrid Sleep off?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

Hello guys,

I hope everyone is doing well.

I have a Sony Vaio that I use to share my hard drives' contents over my home network. I used to run Windows 7 on it with no problems. However, ever since I installed Windows 8.1, I've been having troubles with the external hard drives that are connected via the USB 3 port. After leaving my laptop idle for about 15-20 minutes, the hard drives disconnect. Whenever I want to access them, there is 5-10 seconds delay for the HDD's to fire up. I feel like there is a setting in Windows 8.1 that lets external devices sleep after a while if they're not used to save power.

I have USB Selective Suspend disabled.

Any suggestion will do.

Thank you

Bonjour,
I am having an issue with a "fresh" Windows 10 installation. I emphasis "fresh" because it ain't so fresh anymore but has been reinstalled and the problem was not present on my last installation.

I currently have 4 standard HDD (3x green, 1x black) and 1 SSD where Windows is installed.

The problem I have is even though there are absolutely no activity on the hard drives, they never goes to sleep. I have disabled Windows Search service (still, I was using it on my last installation with no problem with sleep).

I don't know what to do to fix this but I really want the hard drives to sleep when unused for many obvious reasons.

Is there a way to force the sleep or find what is preventing Windows from putting them to sleep?

Thanks all for your help and support on this.

Answer:Hard drives never goes to sleep

I'm only familiar with Windows 7 Pro, so I'm guessing here.
Although you could via Control Panel --> Device Manager --> hard-drives section -- disable just prior to Windows session's end and re-enable at each Windows session's beginning -- that would not be a good solution long-term. Perhaps some of your security and/or monitoring programs are too assertively set? Perhaps Windows backup process is never resting, always working?

Perhaps some of your security and/or monitoring programs are too assertively set? Perhaps Windows backup process is never resting, always working?

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

Answer:Trouble with Wake on Ring, Wake on LAN and Standby - Sleep - Suspend

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

Hello Gurus
Does a hard drive connected via external IDE to USB adapter go to sleep? Anotherwords, is sleep controlled by the operating system or by the controller board on the hard drive?
Hard drive is Maxtor 6L250R0 if that matters.
I'm hoping it won't go to sleep. I need it awake 24/7/365 for video on demand.
Thank you!

Whenever I put my computer to sleep I hear the secondary drive (not the boot drive) spin down, and then the chassis power led starts blinking like it's supposed to when in S3 sleep mode. At this point in time I expect power to go off, i.e. fans stop spinning, signifying a complete transition to S3 sleep mode. However, the fans stay on and a couple seconds later, I see some activity on the boot drive and at the same time, the secondary drive spins up again. I assume there is some activity on the secondary drive as well which is what triggered it to spin back up; I can't tell for sure because I don't have an activity light hooked up to the secondary drive. Finally after a few more seconds, everything powers down. And just to note, the secondary drive does not spin down this time around before power is removed.

On the exact same system, I don't recall the extra secondary drive spin up happening under XP when putting the system to sleep, so I'm wondering why the secondary drive is spinning back up again before finally powering down? It seems that Windows 7 is doing some extra writes/reads to the drives, even after putting the system to sleep but before removing power. Any details on the sequence of events Windows 7 goes through when putting a system to Sleep?

One other thing to note is that the secondary drive is behind a RAID controller, so I suppose there is a possibility the RAID controller is spinning the secondary drive up again, but that seems unlikely since this beh... Read more

When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. I'm not putting it into sleep mode until I find out what's wrong and that's exasperating as I normally leave my computer on all day so I can periodically play my games.

Since two weeks something strange is happening. My hard drives go into sleep mode and instantly come out of it. They won't stay in sleep mode. No matter what delay time I setup, they will behave like this. So even if I setup a time to sleep of 1 minute, you will hear them go to sleep and instantly come out of it every minute, continuously. This used to work perfectly before for months. I haven't installed anything new (except of Windows updates). I've checked with performance monitor if anything is accessing the drives but there's no drive activity whatsoever. I've also tried to shut down as many processes as possible but that didn't help either. The only thing I've changed three weeks ago was my video card (Radeon 6850 to GTX580) but I'm not sure that the issue started then. Just around two weeks ago I noticed the issue. Did anybody else experience something like this?

Answer:Hard drives won't stay in sleep mode

I've solved my problem. The solution, for people with the exact same problem, was to downgrade my Intel RST driver from 11.7 to 11.2.

Hi All,
I recently changed my setup from having a single 1TB primary to a 128GB Crucial M4 128GB 2.5” primary / Windows drive. I am now using the 1TB Western Digital Black for most of my files.

I have noticed that both the solid-state and hard-disk drives have to spin up when I have not been working on intensive software or gaming for a while (not sure how long – anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes). For example, when browsing the internet for a while and only using browsers and what not, I have experienced both drives having to spin up when I go into the file manager and try to open a music file or other document on either drive.

I went into the power settings and specifically disabled the hard drive “sleep” setting, under Advanced settings in Power Management. I am still having the problem.

I searched the internet and forums, but didn’t come across anything except for someone’s idea for a .vbs batch script that runs in the background every 5 minutes to keep the drive from going to sleep… haha (here if you want to check it out: How to prevent hard drive from spinning down Windows 7? - Super User )

Anyone else have this problem before? Thank you!

Answer:Hard drives sleep too frequently / have to spin up after idle

I don't think the M4 has to 'spin up'. But the HDDs stop when they are not being used. I have the same phenomenon in my system. That's good. Saves energy and less wear on the HDD.

There is this program. I myself would not use it but it keeps your disks awake.

Hi there,

I have got an HTPC/Server that has a lot of hard drives in it. The OS is run off a SSD and of all the hard drives, the one that really gets used is 1.5TB WD drive for recording of the television.

I have set Windows up so it turns off hard disks off after 20 minutes if they are not being used which is fine, but my problem is that my computer automatically goes into Sleep Mode (S3 hybrid sleep) when it is not recording anything and when it wakes up all the hard drives spin back up.

Is there any way to keep hard drives spun down even when resuming from sleep?

Thanks

Answer:Can I stop hard drives spinning up after resuming from sleep

No. Any drive that is connected to the system when it starts up or resumes from sleep is going to spin up. Windows attempts to recognize all connected drives when it does this and the only way to do that is to spin them up in order to access and interface with them. Either way, they're only spun up for 20 minutes because they're set to go to sleep after that, right? What is the issue with them doing this?

Question: Hybrid sleep?

Should i turn this off? Or should i just use normal sleep will do?

Answer:Hybrid sleep?

It really depends on you.
Hybrid sleep is a combination of Sleep and hibernate so it takes longer to shut down since it must write to your hard drive just like hibernate does. It was designed for desktop systems.

If power is retained during hybrid sleep (no power failures from the mains) then it will resume just like sleep from what is stored in RAM.

The advantage is that if a power failure occurs during hybrid sleep, it can resume from where you left off just as hibernate does, while sleep alone could not resume since the data in RAM is lost and a complete restart would be necessary.

Hello wchen64572

According to KB934429, this problem occurs in scenarios where a race condition exists between the Monitor.sys driver and a kernel setting. To fix this problem, a hotfix must be obtained from Microsoft Online Customer Services. Or you can download the 32-bit hotfix for x86 Vista Windows6.0-KB934429-x86.msu from here.

I've recently reformatted from Vista Home Premium 32-bit to 64-bit. As of now, this is the only leading cause I have for the problem I am experiencing. I have a mobo that supports S3 sleep, which is enabled in BIOS. I have checked powercfg to make sure that S3 hybrid sleep is available and that "powercfg -h" is on. I have enabled hybrid sleep in advanced power settings. I only have my keyboard and mouse set to wake up the computer from sleep, which is all the same as before when it used to work. However, when I I try to put the desktop into hybrid sleep it only goes into normal sleep mode. The fans and hard drives do not shut off and desktop wakes from sleep when I move my mouse. What is supposed to happen in hybrid sleep is that the desktop goes into a hibernation-like state (i.e. fans and hard drives turn off), and resumes as quickly as in normal sleep when a button is pressed. Both normal sleep and hibernation mode work fine. I just can't seem to get my desktop to go into hybrid sleep any more. I found it very useful because when I go to sleep I don't hear my fans whirring, and when I want to power up, it only took 2 seconds. PLEASE HELP!

Answer:Hybrid Sleep Not Working

Rather than fiddling about trying to manually configure, have you tried setting Power Options to 'Balanced Plan' and then using 'Restore Defaults' for that? Those are the install defaults, and should have it in operation.

If that doesn't get it working correctly then:
ACPI drivers mustn't be correctly installed or...
It mustn't be correctly configured in BIOS.

The question now I've worked out that I have Hibernate & Hybrid Sleep enabled (which I think may have been the default) is, should I change it so I can hibernate from the start menu, or should I just put it in sleep mode and let that replace hibernation safe in the knowledge that during a power cut the session from the RAM will in fact be restored?

Hybrid sleep sounds like a good idea, but hibernate did always feel a little safer....

On another note sleep does take longer to kick in, and also for me (annoyingly) after I press 'sleep' on the start menu, it does eventually wind down (no more fan noise, monitor goes to standby) but only for a split second before 'waking up' immediately.

Answer:Hibernate or Hybrid Sleep?

I use Hybrid sleep and I like it.
It saves the Windows session to both RAM and FILE (hiberfil.sys) when going to Sleep.

For me, on wake up:
If the power did not go out during sleep, the PC Wakes from Sleep in < 5 seconds.
If the power did go out during sleep, the PC Resumes from Hibernate in apx 20-30 seconds.

I'm sure it takes longer to go to sleep because it does have to save the Session to RAM(Sleep) AND FILE(Hibernate), but that's ok for me.
I like the faster Wake Up rather than the slower Resume from Hibernate.
For me 99.99% of the time, my PC(s) Wake from sleep and hiberfil.sys is not used.

I think of Hybrid Sleep as an insurance policy...If Wake Up fails, Hibernate kicks in.
Either way, the session is restored.

The cons to using Hybrid:
- Takes longer to go to sleep
- Requires more disk space for the hiberfil.sys file (assuming you don't use hibernate)

Pros using Hybrid:
- faster wake up normally, AND slower hibernate resume as a "back up" if needed
- uses both sleep and hibernate

Does that mean your PC sleeps for "long" periods of time with the fans running, or does it mean your PC immediately wakes up after going to sleep, or something else...?

Is it possible to enable Hybrid Sleep in Windows 10? This is what WIkipedia says in the article about Sleep mode:

Sleep mode and hibernation can be combined: the contents of RAM are first copied to non-volatile storage like for regular hibernation, but then, instead of powering down, the computer enters sleep mode. This approach combines the benefits of sleep mode and hibernation: The machine can resume instantaneously, but it can also be powered down completely (e.g. due to loss of power) without loss of data, because it is already effectively in a state of hibernation. This mode is called "hybrid sleep" in Microsoft Windows other than Windows XP.

It's not the same as Fast Startup, because this is basically a stripped-down variant of hibernation as described in the original post. I can't find the option to enable Hybrid Sleep anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Also, in the TrueCrypt options menu it says Auto dismount when entering power saving mode. Is that sleep? And is dismounting when it encrypts it again?

Sorry for being so unaware of terms.

Hi
I noticed that after resuming from (hybrid) sleep mode, I couldn't access my second HDD (Maxtor). sometimes it showed the root folder, sometimes not. anyway I had to restart by reset switch as Shutdown/Restart would stuck at "shutting down" message.
I removed all the USB devices and booted up windows and the problem was gone. The PC functioned properly after sleep mode. I connected a USB device (tried 2 different ones), put the PC into sleep and back on. The problem happened again. I also noticed that the HDD activity LED is solid on!
After searching the forum I noticed some people have problems regarding AHCI. Therefor I changed SATA mode in BIOS from "SATA->AHCI" to "Native IDE" and now I don't have the issue.
I don't know if disabling AHCI will have noticeable negative performance impacts.
Should I seek a solution for this or just keeping AHCI off is the only solution?

Now my brother's PC, after it wakes from sleep, HDD LED is solid on (no seek noise heard) and PC is unresponsive. I have to hard reset it!

I've recently put in a new motherboard on my computer. The EVGA 750i SLI FTW Edition. Now since I've put this board in I can't go into Hybrid Sleep properly. It'll power down like it used to and it'll start to power back up but it hangs on a black screen and I have to do a hard reset. I don't know if this has something to do with the new mobo or if there are some settings in vista or the bios not right but I've tried many websites' advice along with a guide on this site to fix the problem and nothing has worked.

Answer:Hybrid Sleep Problem

If you haven't already done so, you should reinstall the OS any time that you swap motherboards. Vista is more tolerant of those sorts of "extreme makeover" hardware changes than previous versions of Windows, but there's no need to risk it. New motherboard = new install.

I personally do not have either a SSD or a Hybrid drive.

However, from what I've read about them (on this site and many others), hybrids are a good alternative when you only have one hard drive slot like in most laptops. They do not provide the same performance as having both a SSD and a HDD. Performance wise they seem to be closer to a very quick HDD.

So if you have the money and only one hard drive slot they seem like a good investment.
If you have two slots spend the extra bit and get a separate SSD and HDD.

I'm hoping someone here can give me some assistance / direction. My desktop PC (in my signature) has been acting a bit weird and taking an extra long time to come out of sleep. It would normally take 1 minute or so to fully wake up, but it's recently been taking a lot longer, 5+ minutes (resuming Windows, logging in, loading all the desktop icons, etc). This made me think that the OS drive (80GB WD) was going bad?? I ran CrystalDisk on the drive and it listed the drive's health status as "caution" and had a high number of uncorrectable sectors, which worried me a bit. I've been wanting to switch to a SSD, and this seemed like a good time to make the switch. I have a SSD (128GB OCZ) from a friend's PC that I was working on. He ended up buying a new PC instead and just let me keep is old one. So I figured that I'd use this drive as a replacement for my OS drive.

So I imaged the OS drive and switched over to the SSD. But I still have the same issue of waking the PC up from sleep (at least it does boot quicker from the SSD now). After the PC goes to sleep I used to be able to hit a key on the keyboard to bring up the Windows logon screen, but now to get to the logon screen I need to press the power button, I'll then get a "Resuming Windows" screen for a bit then the logon screen.
After a few days of searching online, I havent come up with any solutions.

I've looked through the forum and the Internet for someone with a similar problem but have had no luck.

No apps launch for about 30 seconds after my desktop wakes from hybrid sleep.

If I try to launch IE from the keyboard or click on the IE icon on the taskbar it will take about 30 seconds before it launches. This is for any app including Windows Explorer. The mouse pointer moves around the desktop but I can't launch anything for the first 30 seconds after resuming from hybrid sleep.

I can hear the computer accessing the 2 DVD drives and the external eSATA drive and once the spinup noises subside then the apps will launch.

Is this normal or should I be checking for something that is causing this delay?

But now after resetting the registry permissions and removing the malware added registry values with windows repair tool i cannot hibernate anymore! every time the screen will black out when i click hibernate, but it will not actually hibernate. when i touch my mouse or keyboard it instantly wakes up from the 'hibernation'. please help!

Answer:Computer Cannot Hibernate/Hybrid Sleep?

'Start / Control Panel / Power options' and check your settings, It may be that it is set 'Never to hibernate' and all that selecting 'Hibernate' at the moment is doing is turning off your monitor display, and that would explain why it is waking up immediately.

(I have Windows 7 Home Premium on a desktop pc)
I have been into ...
Power Options
Change Plan Settings
Change Advanced Power Settings
and when I expand Sleep there is no Hybrid Sleep option.
I have been investigating which is best from Sleep, Hibernate etc and think Hybrid Sleep might be the best option but am frustrated that it is not available.
Any help most gratefully received

Answer:Help please: Hybrid Sleep option missing?

To turn on hibernate from an elevated CMD prompt use this command
powercfg.exe -h on
After hibernate is turned on you should have the Hybrid option in Power Options

Hi, I have been searching everywhere for the solution to this problem and couldn't find it. I have a Samsung QX410 Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Under Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings > Sleep > Allow Hybrid Sleep, The dropdown menu to select Yes or No for on battery and plugged in are greyed out. They are stuck on "On" and cannot be disabled, even when I click "Change settings that are currently unavailable". When I navigate to Hybrid Sleep, it says Your power plan information isn't available. Any suggestions on how to disable hybrid sleep is greatly appreciated. I really want my computer to sleep faster. Right now it's taking 30 seconds or more to fall asleep but only 3-4 seconds to wake.

Answer:Hybrid Sleep Option Grayed Out

Hi and Welcome to SevenForums,

Lets check your hibernation state. Please follow these steps:

1. Click Start Orb, in the search box type cmd
2. Right-click on cmd, and choose the option "Run as administrator"
3. In the cmd window that opens, type powercfg -a

Post the resultant output here.

Regards,
Golden
