Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

Question: Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

Hello,

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

My external is 2 500g hard drives and is preset for FAT32

I want to be able to put files bigger than 4gs on it, so I have to change it to NTFS, right?

The wall I run into is . . . I will be buying a Macbook Pro in a few weeks and I want to be able to use the HD between the two. From what I read it looks like I could do that with FAT32, but not with NTFS.

I want to know the best thing to do so I don't have to reformat my drive later and have this all be a toilet flush.

I really want to prepare for my mac.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:BUFFALO External USB DVD RW

What is the model of your Buffalo DVD-RW drive? Your laptop should automatically detect the drive when you plug it in via USB. Your drive will definitely work with your desktop, too.In the rare case that drivers need to be installed for your DVD drive, you would want to go to the official Buffalo site to download them.

Hi allfamily member purchased one of these and proceeded to install it without reading any documentation. 2 basic questions I need help with:1. Theyre running XP pro but chose the FAT32 option to format the drive during install. Main PC is NTFS. Will this causae any problems?2. Assuming the answer to q1 is no - the drive has install files, log files, and folders all over the place on it. Once installed and back up is running is it safe to either tidy these files into one folder and leave them on the external drive, or take them off the drive to increase space, and keep them on main PC?Hope that all makes sense.ThanksSi67

Hi,

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

Hi

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.
And i connected it on my Windows 7 laptop, sa... Read more

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

I have a 500GB Buffalo external hard drive that I use for music, pictures and misc backed up documents. The problem is, I seem to be missing a few GB's.

The HD shows:
173 GB of music
2 GB of pictures
5 GB of documents
180 total should be listed....

.... but instead it tells me that 446 GB are being used and the HD is nearly full! For the life of me, I can't figure where all this "extra stuff" is located. Why would my HD be saying it's so full, but I can't find anything else on it?

I did a disk cleanup on the HD, then I did a Windows defrag on it... and it still shows 446 GB being used in total.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Steve

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

Just a generic question...
Does anyone know if the Buffalo WLA2-G54C is compatible with non Buffalo wireless routers? I have a Dlink router (don't know the model off the top of my head) with various brands of client adaptors. I've heard good things about the WLA2-G54C for the repeater function.
I ask this because of this statement on their website:
Repeater/Bridge function of the WLA2-G54C is supported only with Buffalo bridges and routers. But, the device can communicate with other manufacturer's 802.11b and 802.11g client adapters either in bridge/repeat mode or as a stand alone access point.
Does this mean that it simply won't work with other brand routers or that they just won't support it. I would think the latter but was curious if anyone had any experience with it.
Thanks!

Anyone know why my external HDD keeps disconnecting itself?

It used to do it with my old PC, and I thought it was due to the slow processor, but the new one should be fast enough. Also, my other 120gb external HDD used to do it too, so I always thought it was my old PC's fault. But now that my new PC is doing it, I'm stumped.

When I first connected it to the new PC to upload the old PC's files (using SynbackSE), it stayed connected the whole time (several hours).

And I was never asked to format it.

Now it disconnects every few minutes, then when it reconnects, the usual popups appear and a request to format the disk.

Does anyone know how to solve this please?

thanks

Answer:External HDD Keeps Disconnecting Itself

go into power options in the control panel.
change plan settings
then click change advanced
expand usb and check that Usb selective suspend is disabled.

This will at least cover it from the windows side of things.

Hi,

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External HDD and I have had it for over a year now. It was working fine until yesterday when it started disconnecting and reconnecting whenever I moved the laptop. I figured that there must be something wrong with the USB port on my laptop or with the cable.
I tried the HDD in my other laptop which is running XP (not vista like the first one) and instead of just disconnecting it reported a "power surge on hub port". I assume that this rules out the USB ports on the laptops as the problem. However, most of what I've read on power surge issues points to the actual HDD unit itself.
Is it possible that it is just the cable that is causing all the problems or should I try to recover my information from the HDD and get a new one?

Thanks,
MrsB

I then cannot get into my laptop without shutting down or restarting. I would like to be able to make this work without having to do a restart or shut down when I leave work. I have already tried adjusting the "boot time extension" in bios and this did not resolve the issue. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

In W10.1607 x86 when I eject a External USB HDD, it does not Power Down, I mean the Eject Procedure is not being totally finished. The Safe to Eject message appears but the light on HDD stays on and if I pull it out I can listen the Motor spinning down.
That is it not good, that will damage in short time the HDD.
The same HDD in a w10 x64 is working correctly.

PC is working fine, however the connected 4 HDD Bay keeps stalling every 20 min to two hours, active disk time shoots to 100% for just one of the partitions and read or write speed slows to zero. Then it recovers again. While this is just a bit annoying for saving files (afterall it recovers) its bad for streaming videos - serviio will disconnect or skip to the next file depending on how long the hickup takes (anywhere from 1 second to maybe 5 seconds). I have the Bay connected to a dedicated USB 3.0 (planned for a HUB but for trouble shooting it now resides on its dedicated port). Bay workds flawless on USB 2.0 with XP, eSata with XP SP3 and on a Win7 Laptop with USB 3.0 for a day (already tested). Did the power setting tweaks (i.e. power down after 4 hours only, selective USB Power disabled) and did the regedit for the bay's Hardware ID (set usbstor DeviceHackFlag to 400 and set Selective Power Management to off in the registry for the device too). Funny thing is that not the entire bay is disconnecting but only one of disks goes literally down (i.e. the LED in the bay indicated that that disk went to sleep mode). I have no idea what other power management settings I can try. Does anyone have a suggestion for that? Any help would be much appreciated.

Every time I connect my external usb hdd to backup something, when I try to eject the drive(safely remove hardware),windows always says that the drive is used by something and will not allow me to safely disconnect the hdd.

If I just connect the drive and then disconnect it with "safely remove hardware",then it's fine but if I do some copy=>pasting,I have to set the drive to offline from device manager to be able to use "safely remove hardware"

It's 2TB "TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 USB Device" and when I check with Process Hacker, nothing is using the hdd.

I have been experiencing problems with my external eSATA HD with a new IdeaPad Y550 (plugged into the eSATA/USB combination port) where it keeps disconnecting; that is, it will "disappear" for no apparent reason. This has not happened to me before on other computers. It is very frustrating! My typical workflow is to connect it when the laptop is up and running. Do I need to shut down, connect the HD and turn it on before booting the laptop? What procedure should I be using with this computer (on laptops from other manufacturers, I have been able to just plug it in and go--and keep on going). Anyone have any idea why this might be happening? Any suggestions?  TIA

Hi,
Iam new owner of a XPS 15 9560 (i7, 8GB, FHD) since 4 weeks.
Bacause the XPS 15 does not have Ethernet port I bought external USB 3.0 hub + Gigabit ethernet adapter - https://www.i-tec.cz/?lng=en&t=3&v=447
If I plug it into the left USB port everithing works like expected.
However if I plug it into the right USB port the hub disconnect itself every few minutes.
USB 2.0 devices plugged into the hub stay connected whole time but Ethernet and USB 3.0 devices gets disconnect for few seconds and ther reconnect back.
If I resume system from sleep while the hub is connected to the left port it stuck in connect-disconnect loop until I manualy disconnect the hub from the port...
It hapens in Windoes 10 and also in latest Ubuntu 17.04 (In linux it just disconnect with "usb tx status -71 error")

I tried:
Update all drivers. Update BIOS to the latest version - currently 1.3.4. Enable / Disable USB PowerShare in BIOS. Disable "USB selective suspend setting" in Windows power config.Disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in all USB hubs and devices.Disable all build in USB devices (Bluetooth, Webcam) and Wi-Fi.Replace the external hub with new one. (RMA).
Nothing helped.
In my desktop PC the hub works without any problem...

Does anyone have any suggestion please?

I have a Z580I use an external HDD caddy and get random disconnects. This usually happens when I am transferring large amounts of data. When I say large, only 8 gig or so.It is conected via USB 3.Note.Have tried disabling power managementThis only happens with USB3, if I connect the same USB3 cable to the USB2 ports then no disconnecting occurs. This rules out the cable and the device I use.Yes, it is a USB3 caddy and I use the cable it came with although I have tried other cables. Its been driving me mad for months. I even bought a more expensive caddy but have just realised that this is a USB3 problem. The one thing I had not tried was connecting it to the USB2 ports.Connected to the USB2 ports its fine, but very slow.I only tried this after seeing a post on a different forum entitles "is USB3 flaky?"http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2302617Any ideas>

Answer:external drive disconnecting USB3 only

hi mallorcaben,

Thanks for posting!

Is your cable like this, a USB 3.0 cable with extra power support.

I'm thinking it's a power compatibility issue

wel if you know some one that you can borrow this king of Cable might aswell try it before purchasing one,

Or If you're running Windows 7 try installing an updated USB 3.0 driver from Intel

Hi,
I have the base model of Surface Book (i5, 128 GBs, no GPU), when I connect it to my external HD (seagate USB 3.0, 1 TB, self powered), the surface book keeps disconnecting my HD after a few mins usually (sometimes it lasts longer) and then reconnecting automatically. all transfers fail in the process.
I have looked around and found one fix that might actually be working, I went to device manager > USB controllers, and then I have repeated the following steps for all sub items (Generic superspeed USB hub, generic USB hub, Intel USB 3.0 extensible host controller, and USB root hub (xHCI))
- double click on any of the items above
- select the power management tab
- uncheck "allow computer to turn off this device to save power"
- click OK
again, I repeated the steps above for all sub items of USB in device manager. and so far the fix seems to be working, my external HD has been hooked for a few hours and it never got disconnected.
My questions are:
1- is everyone facing the same issue with their SB, or is the unit I have not good?
2- are there any dangers that, after unchecking "allow computer to turn off this device to save power", that my SB my fry up my external HD or damage it in any way? or are there any drawbacks in unchecking this item?
Many thanks

I've just installed a USB 3 PCI Express card on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I've a 320gb sata drive in a USB 3 caddy. The caddy works ok plugged into a USB 2 socket, but is temperamental to say the least when it's plugged into a USB 3 one. Whenever I try copying from it, it never finishes the job, and is forever disconnecting, and reconnecting soon afterwards. In device manager I get a code 10 (device won't start) each time there is a disconnect. I don't whether it's a compatibility issue or a hardware issue, and have never had problems like this with any other "new" developments.

Answer:USB30 external HDD keep disconnecting in Win7

It's not a compatibility issue or a hardware issue. Rather, Windows 7 still isn't yet ready to support USB 3.0.http://www.everythingusb.com/supers...i_Xp/Vista/W7User

Hi all, I've had an external hard drive for some months (about 6-7 now) all was fine until recently.
I am on Windows 10, the drive is a WD Elements.
Even in USB3 or 2 port it will end up disconnecting.
I am uncertain as to why but it just keeps doing this, now it didn't do it when I only had it as my main drive but I added a new one some months ago which seemed to take the drive letter of that one (it was D: then turned to E: - don't know if this makes a difference?)
Anyhow, I have tried all of the uninstalling drivers, changing drivers etc. but it will just keep dropping out and won't re-add itself properly until I unplug it from the power and then reboot and plug back in.
I have checked the drive with 3-4 different drive checking programs and it passes them all fine so it is not the drive itself.
So wondering what to do, far from reformatting and putting Windows 7 on I am a little stuck.
Thanks!

Hey,

Windows 7 x86

I've got an USB External Hard Disk Drive (Samsung S2 Portable 500 Gb). In the last 3-4 days it keeps randomly disconnecting when in use... So, Windows starts, it runs fine for an hour or so (in use), then the magic sound strikes. After a couple of seconds it's detected again, and the whole show starts again. Sometimes it reconnects for 3-4 times in a minute. It's driving me crazy!

My USB drivers are up to date, I've unchecked all those Power Management things, I've installed the KB976972 update (tho I'm not quite sure I was suited for it ). I thought it was the cable's fault, so I left it on my brother's Vista PC for about 5 hours playing movies, and it worked...
LE: Now I'm thinking it could be one of the updates 7 made on the 10th of this month...

LE2: It was working fine since Christmas.

When I click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon on the bottom right of my screen and then select the external hard drive for stopping and removal, I sometimes get a message saying 'Device is not ready for removal, please try again later'. Sometimes I have to wait for ages until it allows me to remove it.Why does this occur and is there anything I can do that will allow me to safely remove it any time I want?

Answer:Disconnecting External Hard Drive

Because the device is in use by the system for some reason. Perhaps being written to or maybe being read from. It may also be used as a data cache by the system.

Like the title states: my external dvd drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting from both the front and rear USB ports of my PC. It appears in Device Manager for a second and then disappears. The drive is connected via a SATA/USB converter and plugged directly into an electrical socket.

It also makes loading and ejecting sounds.

This is really frustrating at this point...

Thanks for your input!

Answer:External DVD Drive keeps disconnecting/reconnecting

Is this a laptop?

How often does it connect/disconnect?

Does it do it while in use or after being left alone?

Is your computer putting it to sleep?

Change your power plan to max performance and see if the problem goes away.

If it does we can tweak the settings and go bacvk to your normal power plan

My windows 7 motherboard crashed on my laptop but the hard drive is okay. I needed some files over the weekend and figured out how to change ownership of my hard drive (put in a SATA enclosure) to my mother's computer.

Today I plugged my external in and I think I changed ownership correctly. I can access my files on my local disk but I got some errors saying that the "parameter is incorrect" and kept connecting and disconnecting all my drives on the external (it's split into like 4 or 5 separate ones).

Eventually it let me connect to my local disk and I was able to transfer some of my files. Now I'm transferring a big group of 75 gb and it keeps disconnecting every few seconds. It also told me that the drive needed to be repaired, but when I run the scan and repair option, it never finishes and then just errors out.

After I get this 75 gb transferred I'm fine with wiping the harddrive clean and turning it into an external, but it's making transferring my files very difficult.

Any ideas without losing my data?

EDIT: Okay, it seems like it can work with USB 2.0 but not 3.0. I tried to change the power settings like I've seen some people suggest but still didn't help

Answer:External Hard Drive keeps disconnecting

Sounds like you could have a bad cable?? USB 3.0 requires perfect cables I've had several new ones that were bad! It also sounds like that hard drive is crashing!! Could be either or both. Good luck I hope you get your data off of it. Again Back up back up

I've got a 2tb Seagate Expansion external drive (0nly about 2 years old) that in the last week keeps disconnecting itself (when transferring files to another Seagate Expansion) and then makes a little clicking sound. I connected it to another USB port with another data cable (thinking it might be either or a power issue) and it started working again and all the files were still intact. The next day after a short time it happened again so I swapped the cable back to the original USB port and it was fine again. Is it possible I'm overworking the USB port (some files are @5-10gb)? I should say I had a similar issue about a month ago when I was trying to transfer music to my new phone from one of the front USB ports so I'm hoping its not an issue with the Expansion drive as I've never had a problem with it before (don't want to lose all my Twilight Zone episodes :( ) and the other one is 2 years older and still works fine. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance ;)

My WD External Hard drive keeps connecting and disconnecting every second or so. I already went into power settings and disabled the USB selective suspend settings but that didnt solve the problem. Answer:WD External Hard drive keeps connecting and disconnecting

Hello kieron22!
I'm sorry for your problem with a WD external!
Which model is it, a My Passport (which one?), a My Book?
You could try using a different USB cable, a new one, then on every port ? USB 3.0 and 2.0, then on another system. Does the same issue occur everywhere? Doyou hear clicking from the drive or any other unusual sounds? Any error messages? How is the drive's performance? Please use the WD Data Lifeguard software (Support Answers) and check the drive's SMART values, post the results here. Please, be careful not to post the drive's serial number, too!

Having solved a number of issues with Windows 10, I almost have it as it should have been from day 1. I still have one annoying little issue.

You know that little sound the computer makes when you connect something to the USB port such as an external hard drive, well mine does it every 10-15 minutes. The sound is as if it is connecting something and then 10 minutes later, disconnecting. I have external drives connected but done of them are the culprits as they show being connected all the time. The computer wakens on its own from sleep mode from time to time too so something is whirring away.

I have a wireless printer attached and wondered if it could be the problem but when I need to use it, I have no issues. Everything seems to be working except for the connect/disconnect sound constantly playing in the background. Any suggestions?

I have a laptop still to update to Windows 10 but I have no intention until I nail these problems first.

Ian

Answer:Windows 10 - sound of external hardware connecting and disconnecting

Well it is not the wireless printer, that sound comes on when a physical connection is made. Change your power settings to high performance so the machine does not go to sleep and evaluate; if that does not help, then disconnect the drives, one at the time for an hour each and evaluate further.

I have a 1TB external storage drive that uses its own power supply and connects to my laptop via USB 2.0 cable. For months I've had absolutely no problem out of the device, until the computer randomly decided to forget the device was plugged in. Now I'm lucky to get the device to be recognized by the computer at all, and when it is recognized, if I try to move anything to/from the device, the connection is immediately severed from the computer.

I use this device for my backup as well as holding on to things I would rather not get rid of. All my drivers are up to date, I've done all the Power Management checking and unchecking that I've read from other threads found via Google search, and still it won't work correctly for me. Any advice?

Answer:Self-Powered External Storage not recognized/randomly disconnecting

Providing you have done all the power options to attack the problem from the OS end of things, then you must consider that the drive itself is the problem. This seems likely since the drive has worked fine in the past.

The first suspect would be the USB cable, the connector on either end, or the port on either end.

The second suspect would be the hard drives power supply. These do go bad. If it is not supplying proper power then the drive will fail to be recognized correctly.

Try the drive on another computer. If it exhibits the same behavior there then you can narrow it down to one of the two issues above.

Hi everybody,I do have a problem with my new portabe USB3.0 interface drive (model number ODP95-SU3), as it keeps connecting and instantly disconnecting all the time. I did already try to disable the energy-saving options for all USB-Ports, so that the computer is not allowed to disconnect the drive due to energy-saving.I did also try the device on another computer, where it works perfect without any drivers or something like that. The Device itself is plug and play, and there shouldnīt be an additional software needed. This is why I donīt get any support from the manufacturer. It seems to me, as if the USB Port does not supply enough energy to the external drive to keep the connection steady. HP Compaq nc 8230, XP Pro SP3

Hadn't used the laptop for awhile, had black screen after I charged it then tried to start it.

Disconnected the battery & held start switch for about a minute, reinstalled the battery, then the hp logo showed on startup and after a couple tries Windows booted.

Was trying to find out how to run an external monitor. Went into the control panel / display / settings, found that I had 2 options under DISPLAY, but both were identically worded - basically for multiple monitors. One was #1, the other was #2. I hooked up the external monitor and it worked fine. I tried toggling between #1 to #2 with no problem or change in what was displayed.

I shut down the laptop, then unplugged the external monitor.

When I try to restart, I have a black screen, nothing at all shows incl the hp logo that usually shows right at the start. The HDD, etc, indicator lights still show that things are running normally.

The only thing I did was leave it on the #2 display setting, altho it read identical to #1, essentially "multiple monitors"

When I got the black screen on startup after disconnecting the external monitor, I also tried the fn+f4 button which is supposed to be the multiple monitor function, without any result or change in the black screen. When I had the external monitor hooked up and working I tried that to see if it had any effect but it did not.

Appreciate any help to get the display back to functioning.

from my PC (usb2) it worked fine,
but then when i connect it to my latop (TOSHIBA satellite L840) it keeps disconnecting within 5 seconds of copying regardless of file size ONLY when its connected to a USB 3 socket
i can copy stuff to and from the laptop using USB 2.0, but for some reason it doesnt like my USB3 ports :/

all software/firmware updated, usb3 drivers installed, windows even tells me it can peform faster if i connect to the usb3 port (silly windows

any help would be GREATLY appreciated

thanks in advanced

Answer:WD My Passport Essential 500GB External Keeps Disconnecting from USB3

If it is giving you the message that the drive can perform faster, it sounds like the computer doesn't have the USB 3.0 drivers installed for those ports. Most USB 3.0 ports have separate, specific drivers to enable the 3.0 speeds.

I have a problem with a previously perfectly functioning external hard drive which is now disconnecting and reconnecting (ie visible in my computer then disappearing) every time it is scanned for content by a media server program meaning that the software doesn't find any content rendering it useless.

I have Vista Home premium 32 and the the drive is a standard 3.5" Freecom 500Gb externally powered and connected via USB 2.0.

I was previously running Twonkymedia with it and had no problems whatsoever until I got frustrated with Twonky's lack of support for Matroska containers and decided to try a few other servers and the hard drive suddenly behaved like this in exactly the same way with all of them! Even when I tried re-installing Twonky.

I don't know what's changed I've tried sharing/un-sharing the drive, no difference. I don't have any problems viewing/editing/copying to and from the drive when a media server is not running.

Please help!

i know you all work so hard, i'm sorry to bother you, but i'm hoping someone will be able to help me...

my 3mo. old used simpletech 320gb ext hd w/ replacement mini b to dual male usb cable ...i have committed some sins like, leaving it plugged in for long periods of time or accidentally pulling out the cord (and i want to mention that the other day after that happened, i could hear, very faintly, like the drive was skipping a little ...and i could not internally stop the drive and had to disconnect it once more to make its blue light go off) - but after that i plugged it in and it seemed to work okay still...) and, now the mini b connection (which i think stayed in place before) is now so fragile that, literally if i barely breathe while resting the drive on my lap (w/ my laptop) the drive will no longer be recognized by my computer... i have to be PERFECTLY still, i can barely get in to look at my files before it happens again...

do you think i should try a new cable, or duct taping the mini b (not too firmly though, because pushing the plug also makes it disconnect) in place ...or do you think i physically damaged the mini b port when the cord accidentally pulled out? ...do you think my files are toast?

i know you all work so hard and might not have time to help me but, thank you so much to anyone who took the time to read this...........................

But it will not let me mount anything that is usb3.In small print on the Buffalo Manaul which I downloaded from their site, it states:'* A USB3.0 interface manufactured by Buffalo is required to use this drive at SS mode specified by USB 3.0 standard (logical transfer speed 5.0Gbps).'Surely they can't expect us to buy the Buffalo usb3 pci just to get this drive to work! Am sure lots of other people will go for a cheaper pci card that does the same job too. Also, I don't really want to purchase the Buffalo pci card and have the same trouble again as I did already.

Answer:Does Buffalo usb3 drive need Buffalo usb3 pci card

As far as I know Windows 7 doesn't support USB 3 yet. Support will be added at a later date, probably incorporated in a Service Pack.

Hi,
so I have this brand new Dell Inspiron 7559 with the Intel HD 530 and Nvidia graphics card. I am also using a Dell external display that uses the same full hd resolution and 60 hz frequency.
So I have connected the external display using DVI>HDMI cable to my laptop. Everything works fine. But I have disconnected the cable, used the laptop around with the built in display and later shut it down. After doing this i cant start it with the external display again. No matter what I do, I tried every setting, also hitting the buttons on my keyboard to use only the second display etc. It stays black.
Only thing that helps - I have to reinstall the drivers "7559_Video_Driver_HYWWT_WN32_20.19.15.4352_A03". After doing this, it works again till i dont disconnect it and shut it down. But I cant work like this, always reinstalling the drivers.
Second Issue - after reinstalling the drivers, it restarts the system but the text is slightly blurry in some applications, I have to restart it again to get sharp text.
Thanks!

I have an Echo Audiofire4 firewire device, for some reasons I need to constantly switch between Echo and my onboard audio device (realtech sth).
I remember I could do it in the past, but due to the Echo installation problems I disabled it from windows startup menu and now, though I enabled it again, it is not shown plugged-in in "manage audio device window". I prefer not to uninstall Echo driver, it took me so long to installing it after all.
any idea?

Answer:not plugegd in onboard audio device after disconnecting external audio

I don't know the answer to your problem but I did find a site that might have what you are looking for.

My P50 display is great on its own or when I have it connected to an external display and use both.  But once I disconnect the external display the fonts are WAY too small and unreadable.  Any way to fix that?

Hi,

I have 1 HDD connected to one USB 3.0 Port. When I connect a second HDD to another USB 3.0 Port, windows automatically Disconnects/Reconnects the First HDD.
I can listen the Motor of the HDD going down, exactly as if I removed the Power Supply.
This is not good. It will result in Damage of the HDD, probably with Head Crash.

How to prevent this "brute force" disconnecting?
Thank you

Answer:"Brute Force" disconnecting USB External HDD

It's probably to much of a drain on your power supply. I use a powered USB hub when I want to connect two or more portable hard drives. If you decide to get one, make sure the hub has its own power source.

The instructions on Wikipedia have me mightily confused.

This router is causing me some grief with the wireless setup, as although I'm getting a respectable signal strength, the internet just keeps dropping out for some reason. I'm hoping the firmware upgrade will help.

However, it seems you need a degree in Nuclear Astrophysics to be able to do it. Is there a simpler way?

Answer:Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 + DD-WRT - how...?

Doesn't look like you need a degree; looks like u need timing.

Slow ninja edit: "Get your tftp ready, hold down the Init (Reset) button on the router, with the Init held down and the Diag blinking, start tftp and immediately release the Init button."

Well I'm getting some strange results...Especially since my old Netgear Bridge is pretty much broken (it won't connect to anything).

First Test I did was Placed the Buffalo router in place of my netgear Router and checked the signal on my wireless USB dongle. It stayed the same. I proceeded to Boost the Signal in DD-WRT using Xmit Power I boosted it from 28 to 100, the signal to the card did not budge...So much for having High signal strength compared to my 3 year old wireless G netgear, or this hack to increase the signal. So far, wasted money.

Now Since my bridge (netgear could still not connect (it can only detect networks, but not connect to them as of last weekend wtf!) It was time to put the router back in place and try the Buffalo as a Bridge.

I placed both routers next to each other; they are roughly 25-30 feet from my Main Router. I enabled the Client Bridge on the Buffalo MIMO Router.

Both Routers had about the same signal I'm getting about 48-60% at this range (Pretty terrible!) DD-WRT However also tells me the signal quality as well which is POOR about 35-39%

Next test was to scan for other local networks. The netgear is picking up all kinds of stuff, between 4 and 7 networks! Some of which appear to have a stronger signal than my own router not more than 30 feet away (say 35%, 40% 65% and 70-99%)
The Buffalo router only picks up 2-3 networks at a time, not always event he ones that are appearing as 99%, which also have str... Read more

Answer:Got my New Buffalo WHT-HP-G54 :(

I guess you installed SP2? I never saw any difference with SP2 set to more than 10mw. Only SP1 seems to register changes to the xmit. That's why I stuck with it despite some other improvements in SP2.

Once you get SP1 working, set it to 80mw-100mw and swap it with your landlord's router. Then put your older router back bridge mode. That should be the best combination if you just ordered one. Before you disconnect the landlord's router, be sure to login to release its DHCP connection.

Hello,

I have a Buffalo WLA-G54 wireless switch that I can't find the default IP for. I've tried IPs 192.168.11.1 192.168.1.1 192.168.11.200 and many other default ones...I've tried to reset it by holding the "init" for 15 seconds on the back, and still can not bring up the config page. Ive checked the Buffalo site and there isnt ANYTHING regarding this model. Heeeelpp!!!!! thanks!

Just bought the buffalo wzr-600dhp router using dd-wrt open source software.

I needed a router I could control bandwidth with with a good QOS feature pack.
QOS kinda works out of the box on this router but setting limits by IP or MAC seems broken.
Cap only works by setting the uplink speed and that is what it stops at.
Just wondering if anyone else has this router and has gotted QOS to work properly?

Also had a hell of a time getting it to work with my isp and DNS apparently these 3 boxes under setup had to be unchecked to get things to work.

I have a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54...I've tried the scripts on the dd-wrt to no avail...I'm also a little confused as to which file to use...standard or mini given comments and the grid on the same site which contradict themselves......

It seems like others don't seem to have a problem flashing it...any suggestions for success out there??

Answer:Buffalo and DD-WRT help

you gotta use TFTP. I'd suggest tomato. It is a lot easier to install onto the router. I installed tomato on my WHR-HP-54G with the downloaded software that you just double click and it automaticly uploads to the router.

Hi
I've got a Buffalo Linkstation 120, great bit of kit but with one annoyance, if it's powered off there appears to be no way to power it back up without actually pressing the button on the front.
It's currently situated in the loft so it's a bit inconvenient. I've tried several WOL programs but with no luck so far.

Any tips or workarounds would be gratefully received.

Andy

Answer:Buffalo Linkstation 120

I, too, have a Buffalo Linkstation 120. There is no mention of wake on LAN in the user manual, nor is there any mention of it in the FAQ section on Buffalo's web site. I cannot imagine that there is a way to accomplish it since wake on LAN is a feature that, on PC's, must be supported in the BIOS. If the Linkstation does not have that feature, I doubt it could be added.

Since the Linkstation is a network attached storage device running its own operating system, it's similar to a file server and can be kept running 24/7. I have had mine for over six months and I leave it on continuously so that all the PC's in my home have access to it.

Out of curiosity...why do turn it off? Or is it that you lose power and then must power it back on manually.

Just installed one of these for a friend, they pick up the signal from a router to allow a sort of networking but only for the internet (broadband) connection. All works fine very fast download time nut then seems to lose the signal and files stop downloading and web is unavailable. The only thing that will reset it is to reboot when it finds the station again. Its obviously set up OK as it workd for about five minutes perfectly then gives up completely, I've changed the ip adress and thats about the only fine tuning I can find.Any Ideas anyone before I buy 15 metres of patch cable and do things the easy way?

Answer:Buffalo Airstation?

used to be that they came without an external aerial in the pack. I'm nbot sure if that's still the case, but it might be the cause of the problem.

All,

I installed a HP MV 2120 Media Vault to act as a mini-server for my media files. It has not been acting very reliable, dropping out when I transfer large (>1GB) files.

The guys over at the Media Vault forum suggested I change my Linksys router for a Buffalo (WHR-HP-G54).

I got the thing today, but the software (router configuration wizard) won't run on Win 7 (Build 7000). Incompatible OS it says.

Options?

Thanks again.

Answer:Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Router

Okay I got it. Configured the thing though Firefox. I think it did solve the drop-out problem I was having.

No thanks to Buffalo Tech support.

Off to the HP forum to thank those guys.

Hi, Hope this is in the right section.....

Ive got a Teraststaion which is up and running in the office on two computers (one Mac and One PC) as well as a laptop. We want to be able to take the laptop to other place (e.g. bosses address) and still connect to the TeraStation. Ive called BT who told me I needed to set up an FTP which they've done for me. But I still cant see the TeraStation on the laptop out of the office. Do I need a VPN (never done one of these before and not entirely sure how its different from an FTP) or do I need do so something with the settings on the TeraStation?

Sorry but I really think I need the idiots guide here as this is a bit more beyond me than I thought it would be!

Thanks in advance!
Dotty

Answer:Buffalo NAS TeraStation help set up

If you have been set up to connect to the Terastation via FTP while away from the office, then that is exactly what you need to do. You cannot 'see' the drive when you are away from the office. FTP requires either a dedicated public IP address or port forwarding done at the router to the Terastation. The easiest way to do this would be contact BT and have them tell you how to connect to it, then use an FTP client like Filezilla or WinSCP, Realistically, both FTP and VPN require advanced networking to setup properly. Are you sure your Terastation does not provide some kind of web service that you can use to connect to it remotely?

So I ordered the Buffalo router recommended on the "help me pick a router" thread and am awaiting its arrival. I have been doing a little reading over at the DD-WRT site and also searched for the latest build for this router. The router itself is not listed. There is some talk about instabilities and shortcomings with the current DD-WRT builds on their forum.
My question is this. What version shall I upgrade to upon receiving the router? Or, should I just try it out with the factory installed DD-WRT and see what happens? What have you all done with this router?
Any feedback is appreciated. My plan is to get it set up quickly, minimizing down time as wife is minimally tolerant of that sort of thing! I don't want to hear any "It worked fine before, why did you need to upgrade?"
Thanks,
Pat

Answer:Buffalo WZR-HP-G450H

Well after looking at the site your best bet would be the most recent firmware released 4/03/12 from buffalo, as it does not appear that dd-wrt has any firmware on their site.
Here is the ftp, you can also find the link via the buffalo site here.

Good luck as from what I have read this is a very flaky with dd-wrt. I hope the issues have been resolved in the newest firmware.

Morning,I've got the above wireless router which has worked well up until last sunday, I got round the problem and then it happened again on Tuesday. The problem im having is that the computer using the buffalo adapter is struggling to recquire a network address and my wireless laptop won't log on with the correct SSID and AES key.I've used AOSS to setup the network, which works really well. To get round the problem I was having I cancelled AOSS, unplugged everything and deleted any profiles for that connection, re-plugged in everything and started AOSS from the router and the buffalo adapter, this set up another secure wireless network automatically. This worked a treat for two days then it happened again.Does anybody know why this is happening or can help me stop it from happening. Its pretty easy to restart the AOSS, its just annoying that I need to keep doing it. Its stopping others in the house from using the net while im out or away as im the only 1 who knows what to do.My PC wired to the router works fine all the time so im guessing that the router is changing some wifi settings itself . Maybe I might be better binning AOSS and setting up the wireless side manually. Thanks for any help

Hi, I have recently installed Windows 7 on an old Dell PC which works fine. The original OS being XP. It doesn't have a wireless card installed on it. I have a Buffalo Air Navigator Wireless G Usb Model WLI-U2-KG125S. I have had this working on older machines but I cannot install it on the Windows 7 PC. The disc which states Ver 9.2.2 starts to install then just hangs. I've left it running for hours while it says installing but halfway through it just stops loading. As soon as I pull the stick out it cancels. Is it compatible with Windows 7? If not are there other drivers that I can use? I have asked on Buffalo's forum but have had no reply's. Thank you for any assistance.

Hello Everybody.
This is the problem i'm facing with a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 access point and a switch.
I wanna use the Buffalo as router. I'm connecting the Buffalo Wan port to the DSL modem and one of his lan ports to a PC. Everything is working fine and connection is up.

If i connect the second port of the Buffalo to a switch connected with 6 other PC, the link led on the Buffalo blinks (showing no correct connection) and the led on the switch doesn't light up.
Same thing happens if i connect the second port of the Buffalo directly to another PC network card. On the network card the link led doesn't light up and on the Buffalo the led blinks.

Which is the mistake ?

Thanks in advance for your help

I purchased one of these to replace a non-working internal one on my Acer Laptop.

Does anyone know where I can get a Manual.

In Particular I want to know how to play a CD which already contains normal photographs.

The Buffalo has lots of menu options connected with burning a CD/DVD but the word "Play" does not seem to be in its vocabulary!

Answer:Buffalo CD/DVD drive

If it's not a video CD, but a data CD then typically you just load the video file(s) in a player. Or if you have a player associated with video file types, just double click on a video file after opening the drive in Explorer.
