Seagate 500gb External Harddrive, Windows 7 Will Not Read?

Question: Seagate 500gb External Harddrive, Windows 7 Will Not Read?

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

As you can see from these images non of the fixes on the fourm, or on seagate work. If you have any fix please reply to this post as soon as you can, or on the other hand any questions. I will be very grateful.

Sorry about the thumbnail, Not sure what happened there.

Preferred Solution: Seagate 500gb External Harddrive, Windows 7 Will Not Read?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"

There is an issue with this A350-043 Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bits, part number : PSAL6C-04S015

Simply put: when connected to a SEAGATE 9NK2AL-510 500GB SATA DRIVE EXTERNAL USB (s/n: 5QG1YH1E) Windows will not load, it goes upto and freeze just prior to the green moving bars. If the USB cord is pulled out and put back in for a second, Windows continues to load normally and all is well.

Otherwise, the OS will take up to 15 minutes to load. Looking in the BIOS features, there is no option to boot from USB available, so it cannot be disabled. I have upgraded the BIOS of the Toshiba to the latest version with no change in that issue.

I have tested and confirmed that the issue persist no matter which USB port is used.
The external drive is fully fonctional and there is no errors or issues with it when Windows is loaded. I am reported this issue to Seagate as well as Toshiba in the hopes that a solution can be offered on that, but did not hear back on anything as yet.

Answer:Windows will not load on a Satellite A350 with 500GB Seagate external HDD

You mean the notebook needs 15min to load the Windows OS even if the external HDD is not connected?
This sounds weird and I doubt this can be related to any software issue?

First of all you should check the booting order in the BIOS? the USB should be set at last or second last position.
Secondly you should check if the same issue would still persist after an new OS installation? in some cases the booting procedure could be affected due to installed software and background processes.

But if the new OS installation does not help and if the issue will still persists then I assume that an hardware problem (motherboard????) could be the reason for that and therefore an notebook technician should be contacted!!!

That?s my opinion?

Okay, hey guy, here is my problem.

I've had this drive for a little while now, worked flawlessly for ages. I put movies and stuff on it and then watch it on my Xbox, I had about 30GB worth of data on it.

Now, what I want to do is: Format/reset the drive BACK to FAT32, it is currently in the "RAW" state. I have NO idea how this happened, I havent dropped it or anything it literally happened overnight. Have tried formatting at least 6 times, it always says "Format could not complete".

When I try to open it in my computer it just says "H: is not accesible, the parameter is incorrect". Have tried deleting the voume in disk management, that doesn't work either. Tried formatting through CMD, doesnt work.

I'm lost for ideas. Is my drive just screwed? I'm not bothered about getting the data back, I just want it to work again so I can get it back to FAT32 format.

Many thanks.

Hi.
I have a Seagate Goflex 500GB external hard disk. When I connect it to my laptop, it doesn't appear in my computer, and I have attached the screenshots of Disk Management and MiniTool Partition Wizard.
The hard disk is behaving this way when I removed it from my laptop while it was copying a file.

I do not need any data. I just want my hard disk to start working again.
Please help. Thanks in advance! High hopes!

Got the "Seagate Free Agent" external HD to back images up to however...I've just checked after 3 back ups and it's got none of my TIFF or RAW files on. All the JPEG and other file formats have gone over ok but the folders that contained both these formats just show as empty.I just use the software provided on the HD to do a backup.Should I format the drive so it is completely empty then just drag and drop?

Answer:Seagate Free Agent 500gb External HD HELP!!!

Yes, just drag and drop is the easiest way.Suggest you make new folders to drop the other folders into, called for example, 'BackupCopy Jan09' or BackupCopy01, BackupCopy02 etc etc.or even BackupCopy of MyDocs (you get the idea)

My seagate external drive has stopped working. I looked in device manager and it is there and saying its working properly. Its also listed in disk management showing as RAW and read only. I've tried numerous recovery software with no success. Teskdisk reported read error and found no partitions. Easeus wizard recovery scanned for hours and found no files. I have a lot of precious files on the hard drive which I would hate to lose. I do get a window up saying the drive in question needs to be formatted, I know that if I do this I will lose all my data. In desperation I clicked ok for this but even the format was not successful. I have also taken the hard drive out of its enclosure and is now plugged into a hard drive docking station. This made no difference.

any helpful advise?

Answer:hard drive woes seagate external 500gb

If both TestDisk and Easeus have failed then you may be out of luck. If the data is truly important then sometimes its best to seek assistance from a data recovery firm as sometimes accessing the drive only makes it worse. You could try one of these for that: http://hard-drive-recovery-services-review.toptenreviews.com/

When a drive fails sometimes data recovery is not possibly at all or only through data recovery companies.

This is why backups are so important and why you should invest in a backup drive or online backup in the future.

I received the above hard drive today from play.com and immediately started formatting the drive but rather than doing a "quick format" i proceeded with the standard format but i started at 15.00 today and it was still formatting at 20.00 tonight, i also noticed a burning smell coming from the power cable or USB cable from the rear of the external drive.I cancelled the formatting as it was taking too long and proceeded with a "quick format" due to the burning smell and the drive formatted straight away.Is it normal for a ext hard drive to take so long to do a standard format? Is the burning smell normal as it was running for several hrs?Should i return the ext hard drive to play.com for a replacement? as the returns policy states that i need to pay for P&P and if they dont find any faults they will return item to me and i will be liable for the costs of P&P again.

Answer:Seagate Expansion 500GB External USB Desktop Hard

Very often a new external hard drive comes already formatted, but if not, then only a quick format should be used.

Hi, I bought a Seagate 500gb external hard drive in February and have put everything on it. A few weeks ago it started to disconnect itself when in use and I soon realised that the USB cable was loose when plugged into the hard drive. It got to the stage that it would just fall out of the hard drive even when no pressue or movement was applied. Last week I put the cable back in but it felt different so I had a look and the hard drive's USB connector had completely come away from the hard drive and disappeared inside! I moved the hard drive around until the connector could be seen from the USB gap but there's no way I can re-attach it. I emailed dabs.com (where I purchased it) and they have agreed to pick it up next week and possibly repair it if they can. Although this is good as it means I haven't lost any money I'm really worried I'm going to lose everything! I literally put all my music, movies, uni work, pictures, etc onto it and deleted them off my laptop as my laptop was so full. Is there any way I can 're-back-up' all my files? Do you think when they repair it everything will be lost? Thanks for reading

Hi

For heaven's sake please help me. I'm in real trouble. Some months ago I was backing up my files to my new Seagate 500GB external USB drive. Around those days when I was doing the backup we were having intermittent electricity blackouts. I don't have backup power source such as UPS. I think the blackouts messed up the drive. I have two Seagate drives. The problem also happened to the other drive which wasn't used for the backup but I formatted it and it's working fine now. But that backup Seagate has messed up big time.

When I had copied almost 8GB data. The computer couldn't read any further. The light on the drive keep blinking and it said something like 'couldn't read from sector...'. I'm sure physically the drive has no problem.

I think my only option left to retrieve the data is to use SpinRite software. My friend has bootable CD of this software. Please, guide me what else could I do?

Thanks a lot for your time and suggestions.

PS: It's a USB one and I have already taken it out of the enclosure and directly attached to the board but all in vain. It seems only option left is SpinRite.

Well it all happened last night. I wanted to move my pc and internet connection to the office to keep things organized. When I did my hard drive will not work. When I plug the power cord to the hard drive the blue light quickly flashes then stays off, but the hard drive turns on then stops completely. I have stripped apart the external encloser to find any other discrepencies, but still nothing. I happen to have a magazine "Blac X" So i just attached the hard drive to it and still noting, except the hard drive continues to run instead of shutting off after a few seconds of running.

Hey guys! Need your help please. My girlfriend just gave me a 500GB GreenDrive External Hard Drive made by Fanton Drives. She got it for a gift and didn't really have a need for it, but hooked it up to her computer and it has worked fine and she hasn't had any problems with it. I get it and hook it up and my computer won't see it AT ALL! I've tried everything. For hours now. That's how I happened to find out about this site. I've tried restarting my computer, re-powering the ext. hd., plugging the power supply into different outlets, plugging the ext. hd. into different usb ports on my cpu, I've tried disk management, creating a disk, everything. I can't find anything online or through Fanton's website. Nothing through Google. Finally I found Tech Forums so I'm counting on you guys. I'm wondering if the damn thing got dropped or something. It doesn't take any drivers because I'm running Windows XP SP2 so I'm completely clueless. Please Help! Thanks! Peace!

Answer:Computer Won't See GreenDrive 500GB External HardDrive

Try this first, if your hdd is a sata model, hook it up too sata port 1.
Turn on your machine and go into the bios, look at the hardware display screen.
If it shows up, it might say primary master or secondary master, thats a good start for now.

Read this first about sata and windows xp, that should tell you why it may not be coming on.

Hi,

I use a Dell XPS with Windows XP Media Center, Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I have a Western Digital MyBook Premium Edition 500GB External Hard Drive. It looks like this: http://reviews.cnet.com/hard-drives/western-digital-mybook-premium/4505-3186_7-31793438.html

Well the problem is that its supposed to be 500gbs or space. My pc only shows 232gb of harddrive space on My Computer and that its a FAT32 file system. The only thing I've done was plug it in and put doc, music, vid files in it, nothing else but that. At the time I didnt know if that was normal or not so I didnt do anything about it, but now that I've become more computer smart, I see that theres something up. Is there a way to get the other 200+gbs working from the external harddrive w/o losing my files that are already on it?

I did the My Computer>Properties>Volume, clicked on Populate and heres what I got:

Disc: Disk 1
Type: Basic
Status: Online
Partition style: Master Boot Record [MBR]
Capacity: 238473 MB
Unallocated space: 0MB
Reserved space: 0MB

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while.

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

Problem
- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

Question
- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recover... Read more

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

Autobackup.Maybe someone has used or is using this.I need to sort this out because the drive is useless to me if I cannot add extra files to the plan.It is meant to monitor changes and automatically write them to the drive.I think I might be missing something obvious but the manual/help is not very helpful. Please somebody point me in the right direction.

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Answer:Seagate Replica (2T External Harddrive) GoFlex Desk

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?
The built-in one works well, I've used it.

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

I have been having on going problems with a Seagate Free Agent go 500 GB external USB drive and pretty much any computer that it is attached to. This is the second drive that I have had after having the first one replaced I seem to be having the same or similar problems. Basically the drive was working fine and then it basically over night everything went wrong. When hooked up I cannot operate any software, remove the drive, check disk management or reboot the system. I cannot boot the system with the drive attached, it stalls. I cannot even safely remove the drive without forcing the computer to shut down with the power button, as soon as the drive is no longer attached all programs immediately respond like nothing ever happened. I have seen similar situations described on several different boards but no one seems to have any solutions. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Problems with Seagate Free Agent Go 500GB drive and Windows 7

Try a USB "Y" splitter where you pull the power for the drive off two USB ports rather than one and see if the problem continues.

Greetings from the other side of the world!

I have Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB Portable External Hard Drive that starting to get weird and my main goal now is to save the data in it before it's too late. For information, I have 4TB WD Elements I intend to use as the backup.

First significant problem is that every time I plug it, it shows up just fine on Explorer:
But if I tried to interact with it (double click, right click, etc) Windows Explorer become unresponsive, my pointer turn to the loading blue circle one and nothing happens, if I tried to close the explorer, the "Not Responding" text appears on the title bar and then I need to force end it. I'm also unable to open some programs, after I unplug the external hard drive, then those program I clicked earlier open simultaneously.

I've read several solutions online, but I'm trying to be cautious by asking first than further messing with my external hard drive. Here some other screenshots I took:
By the way, I can't start Safe Mode while connecting it from the start (it stucks at the blue window logo). When I tried to run Check Disk with Command Prompt (Admin) it doesn't return anything, instead, it turns unresponsive and I need to unplug the Seagate just to close it.

Any help is appreciated!

HI, We had brought our 1TB external Hitachi hard drive (XL1000) on which I had some movies and stuff to watch on the laptop on our vacation recently.  The power cord accidentally got disconnected while the external hard drive was plugged in one of the laptops that was using a file on the external Hitachi drive.  When we reconnected the power and started it up again, the laptop was not reading any files on on the external drive.  It stated that the external hard drive was not formatted and needed to be formatted before it could be used. Needless to say , I DID NOT go forward with the formatting as I knew that would erase any files left in the hard drive. I have since hooked up the Hitachi hard drive to both laptops (Acer 18 months old, and a Toshiba 8 months old, both using Windows 7)) and now that we have returned home, to the Dell desktop ( 4yrs old(maybe older?), windows Vista) all with the same results - there are no files on the Hitachi external hard drive. Is there any hope in recovering the over 600GB of files on the this Hitachi external harddrive?

Answer:1TB external harddrive, power disconnected while in use,now won't read any files

I would crack it open and connect it via SATA to a desktop computer internally as a slave drive to where you can address the hard drive with a bummed file system. Then run check disk on the drive to try to repair it. If the external drive was jarred when the power was disconnected a head could have made contact with platter and scratched it. If thats the case then depending on the nature of the physical damage check disk may not be able to fix it and you might need to use a utility like GetDataBack NTFS. I own a licensed copy of a bundle deal of their software and it works great for retrieving data that is orphaned in a destroyed file system. This software searches drives even ones that have the all so well known armature clunk failure and is able to address the drive and sweep the data off of the platters with each clunk sweep and reassemble "most" of the data. As long as the drive spins and the armature can sweep either by clunking or being addressed by the software data can be retrieved. I used this software on a laptop that took a flight of stairs as it was running. Engineer wanted to get to a meeting and bring his running laptop with him and well....laptop slipped from his hands while running and it cartwheeled down a flight of stairs ending with a destroyed laptop and of course data that was critical and only resided on that small damaged hard drive. I got back about 80% of his data and he was fortunate that his months of work that wasnt backed up was included... Read more

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Question: Seagate 500GB SATA

I purchased a new Seagate internal drive for my T60p to be used either as the boot drive or as the bay drive for data.  However, I can not get the machine to fully acknowledge it.  It will show in the boot list, but it will not boot or appear as an available drive.  I have updated the SATA AHCI Controller driver, but haven't been able to find an update to the UltraBay ATA Storage Controller. If I boot my XP Prof OS from the Bay Drive using the original 100GB drive, and have the new drive in the Drive 0 location, I can at least see it via the Computer Manager.  I was even able to format it, but it not accessible. This new drive has a 3GB transfer rate, and I have tried the jumper setting to reduce it back to a 1.5 GB rate.  No luck. Is this related to a 137GB limitation on the drive size?  If so, my Seagate 500GB USB drive works fine, but that may be the difference between USB and an internal drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate 500GB SATA

Per the Microsoft Support site, I added an entry to the Registry of "EnableBigLba=1", and the drive was acknowledged as New Hardware during the boot process and shows up in the Computer Management.  However, the drive does not show in Windows Explorer.

Hi

I have a 500Gb Seagate external drive, its about 9 months old , it doesnt get THAT MUCH use... it is quite full of LARGE files though, its used on my TV to watch movies and mp3's, its partitioned into 1 WBFS 20Gb partition and a NTFS 435Gb partition - recently its been giving I/O errors and refusing to work, most times in middle of transferring a file it will lock up and i have to kill power to it, I think its got surface errors, sometimes I have to restart win7(64x) to get access back to it - its really getting on my t1t end... ive tried error-check but it locks up after 5 minutes, i dont have anywhere I could store the files (when i can get access) to reformat it etc... I dont want to lose the files either... the MFT is messed up cos ive also deleted a 4Gb file and it didnt appear in recycle bin so i couldnt permanently delete - so file doesnt show in hard-drive but uses the space... sometimes i try to delete old files and halfway through it says "unexpected error try again?" which fails and have to cancel, once its done that the device is unaccesiible , obviously errors but i cant fix it?

can anyone help me please?

thanks

its THIS one

I currently have a Seagate FreeAgent USB external drive set up and running on my desktop. I also have a Maxtor 320GB USB external drive connected. I travel with the Maxtor and store my images on this drive. I'm a photographer. Once home I ask the Seagate to update its database to reflect what's on Maxtor. I've bought another Seagate to replace my Maxtor.

A. I don't like having the Maxtor constantly running even when the cpu is off.
B. It's only a 320GB drive and will reach capacity before the Seagate.

Question(s):

1. What's the best way to transfer the data from the Maxtor to the new Seagate2 drive?

2. What features in the Seagate2 drive will I select during installation so that it won't compete with Seagate1 during backups?

3. How will I upload new images from my traveling Maxtor after a photo shoot?

Answer:How to set up 2nd Seagate FreeAgent 500GB

1. You can transfer files from one external drive to another by hooking them both up and then literally dragging and dropping the files from one drive, to the other drive. For example, if you have Maxtor set to C: and the Seagate to D: 'copy' the files from C:/Photography Files and then 'paste' in d:/Photography Files. Change that folder name to whichever you have.

2. Not sure

3. Do as above, but in reverse order (and destined to your desktop, or whichever computer it is you want) - be sure not to copy over an existing folder.

Hi, I bought one of these drives a few months back, had problems originally with 'delayed write failure' in XP, but managed to correct that by changing the USB cable.I'm now running Vista instead of XP and that's made no difference, its been fine, but over the last few weeks the drive hasn't been spinning down when the PC shuts down (usually takes about 20 seconds once the PC turns off), but instead keeps spun up with the strip on the front 'glowing' quickly. Its also started doing this while I've been using Windows, and vanishes from the available drives. The only way to resolve this seems to be to shut the PC down, unplug the drive from the PC and mains for 30 seconds, plug the drive back in and then turn the PC on again. This was ok once every other week, but now its happening daily - is this a Vista problem or a faulty drive?

Answer:Seagate Freeagent 500GB USB 2 Problem

Sounds like a probable faulty drive I think. If you have anything on there that you don't want to lose, better do a backup of it just in case - even if I am wrong about the drive.

I was playing Mass Effect earlier. Got off because of school, so i put it to sleep. When i returned home, I tried getting on steam. The path wasn't found, so I didn't think anything of it. Rebooted. Still no path, so i go to my slave HDD, and surprise! It wasn't there for some reason. I've looked for it in disk management; no where to be found. Ran seatools, no luck. I had around 300 GiGs on there.. please, someone tell me my HDD is just being a lazy ****.

I also turned off the laptop, took out the battery, and both master and slave drives for an hour. NOTHING.

EDIT: when i check disk management, it seems there is a drive of some sort on there, but it has no name.. It's blank. Nothing but *Status* has any information: "Healthy (OEM partition)." When i try to right click, the menu only has a "Help" tab.

Answer:500gb HDD SeaGate not appearing on laptop

Have you tried plugging the Seagate in to a different USB port? Used a different USB cable?

There might be damaged or corrupt system files preventing the Seagate from being recognized. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

I bought the drive on six weeks ago. The cable became disconnected from the drive while connected to the laptop and data was in use. (Windows Vista) It now beeps when I plug it in and the laptop no longer recognizes the drive. From everything I've read, the drive is toast! I will never buy a Seagate again! Very unreliable. Good thing it's completely backed up to Carbonite! I have over 7,000 iTunes on this drive.

Answer:Seagate Go Flex 500gb beeping

Welcome to the world of hard drives; they fail, its a simple well known fact. All drives from all manufacturers will fail especially when mishandled.

P.S. a 6 week old drive has warranty, simply replace it under the warranty.

I've got a Seagate Expansion drive, S/N 2GHK8M0X. It worked fine in my old computer. I just built a new one and when I plug the drive into the usb port windows fails to recognize the drive.

My previous computer was running Windows Vista, this one is running Windows 7.

Any idea on what I can do to fix this? From what I can find there are no drivers and no firmware for this drive, at least not on the Seagate site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Answer:Seagate 500gb Expansion Drive

If it's a laptop, you could try this (fixed someone else's USB problems - interested to know if it works for you):
Unplug power cord and take out the battery.
Hold the start button in for 30 seconds.
Replace battery and plug power cord in.

Before doing the below, try other USB ports on laptop.

Try:
- remove Seagate from PC
- restart
- run DriveCleanup as admin - Drive Tools for Windows
- restart
- plug in Seagate try to install

If that fails try deleting USB upper/lower filters: How to Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry Values

So I have a question to ask you pro's.. maybe someone like SCSI RAID will see this thread.. lol.

basically when I built my system i got alot of the best things I could afford.. One of them being this HD.. it's one of the best for it's kind. 500 GB Seagate Barracuda with the added 32mb cache, and 7200.11 the new .11 model is there best one. there is a 10 and a .09

so this HD is able to work with SATA 1.5Gb/s and SATA 3Gb/s interface speeds. it came stock with the little Pin set at 1.5 so I know going to 3Gb/s is double.. but I left it in the 1.5 slot.. so my question is How big of a difference will that make. would I notice anything by switching.. or should I leave it alone. and also would it be just as easy as Powering Down my system and moving the Pin..?? let me kno as I'm just curious.. these days I'm wanting everything to be fast as it can.. lol

thanks!

Answer:500GB Seagate Cuda Question.

Hey xguntherc,

I can't really answer your question on a technical level, but maybe on a practical one. I have got two raid 0 disks each made up of 2 500 GB HD's each, two Seagate 9200.11's and two WD Caviar SE16's. Both pair are SATA 300 or SATA II or whatever you young people are calling it these days. That is, both supposedly capable of moving data at 300 MBps. (Which isn't equal to 3 Gbps, but close. Have they just given up on accuracy of expression?) But, transferring files from one Raid to another (which I guess is about the fastest thing I can do off of the cpu bus), the best throughput I have ever achieved has been capped by 90 MBps. A pretty far cry away from the mark, no?

That's as close as I can come to answering your question, some food for thought. You know, the USB 2.0 standard calls for a top throughput of 60 MBps, and until recently I never found a single device that actually reached that speed. I got a nice 4 gig zip stiick that will almost do that, downhill only, still only about 20 uphill. My guess is that these HD's might reach the SATA 300 speeds on the next-gen planars, the 1333MHz busses. But it's an ill-informed guess.

1. Problem:
I have a 500 GB (effective 467GB) WD Passport external hard drive. Long story short, I was going to backup something from my second laptop (Windows Vista) and the computer froze so I freaked out and disconnected the External Hard Drive because I could not select "safely remove". Now it can't be read neither on that laptop nor on my main laptop (windows 7). I installed the correct WD drivers for my main laptop and the warning message disappeared from device manager but the hard drive cant be read (takes too long to try to read and fails) and appears as a Local Disk (E: ). Windows has many times suggested me to reformat the drive. I won't reformat it. I want to recover aprox 200Gb stored in it.

I have downloaded TestDisk and before repairing the partition I want to use TestDisk to take a look at the files and do a test by recovering one random video. Following the steps in this thread I encounter that When Selecting the Drive (the last line of TestDisk), TestDisk identifies that there is no partition table type in my drive. But when I select the HDD in the second line of TestDisk, it identifies a Intel/PC partition table type. I am attaching 3 captures of TestDisk to illustrate this:
Disk and Drive as shown in TestDisk.
Drive None partition table type detected.
Disk Intel/PC partition table type detected.

Now my doubts are:
Is it ok to use TestDisk to solve this problem? I think the problem is the HDD partition got corrupted when I discon... Read more

Hi
I plugged my new FreeAgent Drive into a USB port (on a set of extra USB ports). I got the installation wizard and proceeded. In the middle of installing, a box came up to say (can't go back to quote exactly) "incompatability with Windows 7 drivers". It said that if I continued blah blah blah bad stuff.
I canceled the installation and searched the net to download the driver(s) needed. I can find NOTHING that will give me the right info to get this working. I did run across advice to use a high speed port, so I disconnected the drive from the extra USB port set and plugged it directly into my computer port. Still no go.
Also, when I first plugged the new drive in (to the extra port set), it made the normal little 2-tone "ding ding", like when installing cameras and such. When I unplugged it, same 2-tone "ding, ding" thing. However, no matter what I do to try and fix the problem since, when I plug it in I get: "ding, ding, ding", in same tone (with slight buzz), and in a staccato-like rhythm?
I'm not computer literate beyond word processing and searching/browzing! I've been pretty successful with searching out help and solving problems online, so I know a FEW things. But not enough to go beyond updating, upgrading, downloading . . .
HELP

Answer:can't install Seagate FreeAgent 500gb Ext Drive

PS: yes I have gone to the seagate.com site to ask for help. All I've found on there that's helpful at all is just a thing saying well over half the returns they get on this drive have nothing wrong with them . . . I assume this simply means, "stop returning them!"

What are your thoughts on the above drive. At the moment I'm using a Kingston 120Gb SSD drive. I'm now starting to hit problems with the limited 120Gb when loading image from my camera.
My programs take up around 45Gb leaving approx 45 Gb spare. Unfortunately there are times when I need to upload around 50-80Gbs for editing. As an example from this weekend at the local airshow I have over 75 Gbs of photos to edit.
I have plenty of capacity on other drives installed on my PC, but have now got used to the much higher speed of SSDrives, hence my thoughts re. the 500Gb Momentus.

Answer:Seagate 500GB Momentus XT 2.5" Hybrid SSD

Hi mate,
Anything over 400MB/s Read and write should be ok. Scan.co.uk are doing some great offers on SSD's. I just picked up a SANDISK Hyper X SSD SataIII at 555MB/s Read and 510MB/s Write.
The Hybrid drive you are refereing too is a conventional HD with spinning plates etc but it has a large cache which it buffers the data from the CPU and rean/writes it when it has spare time or the buffer gets full.
If you are doing a lot of large photo edits and file transfer, you could fill the buffer very quickly and drive speeds will return to the standard levels.

Answer:500GB Seagate portable hard drive

Was the hard drive previously working in the laptop before stopping working? Or did you try it in the laptop after it stopped working via USB?

A operating system needs to be installed on the hard drive for it to actually boot. If one isn't it will ask you to insert a bootable device in order to load an operating system.

I've successfully used this drive (which has plenty of spare space) to create System Images but it is not accepted as a suitable drive for File History - tried all 3 USB ports and tried re-starting computer. I've already used a 2gb memory stick for File History but this is now full. I've looked at the tutorials but not found them helpful on how to change backup drive. Hi Guys
I'm new to this forum and I'm not a HDD expert. If this problem is not an easy fix I will be sending the hard drive off for recovery.
I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB hard drive. When I mount this into to the dock, the drive is recognized and I can see all of the folders and files. If I try to copy any of the folders the hard drive freezes. I can copy small files for a period and then again it shuts down. There is a clunking noise coming from the hard drive and when it stops responding there is a sudden clunk and them it goes off line. Any diagnosis software I try to use causes the drive to shutdown.
If this is a faulty circuit board or if the head needs replacing I think I could managed this, but I'm not going top touch the platter.
Any Help or advice would be much appreciated

I can assure you that you wont.
I would suggest that you try cloning it to another drive just to see if you can recover your data. Probably wont from what you have said but worth a go.
If no luck then download "Reccuva" or similar recovery software and try that.

I recently installed everest to monitor the internal temp of my components after 2 WD 500 GB harddrives burned out on me. I noticed the temps were crazy hot on the graphics card and one harddisk in particular. so I went and got the Antec 900 case, installed all the optional fans and turned them all to high to see the differences. I live in Hawaii, so I don't have a/c. the avg room day temp is approx ~80F day, and 65~75F night. While my graphics card is still showing high temps, my main concern is that my new Seagate Barracuda 500GB drive is getting waaay to hot. Idle temps day are around 55~58C day, and 50~55C night. These temps are after one hour of power up, and no activity on system. Can anyone tell me why after all these fans in my unit are blowing on this thing, that it's temperature is still nearing its operational limits while sitting idle?

My other internal components are:
mobo: ECS 570 SLIT-A
cpu: DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (not overclocked)
graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT
hds: Maxtor 300GB | Maxtor 120 GB | Seagate Barracuda 500GB | Seagate Freeagent Pro 750GB (ext)
o/s: Vista SP1

Also, I've tried shifting the hd's to different positions in hd bay, but temps are still consistent. the 2 Maxtor's are approx 30~35C on avg.

O/S on Maxtor 300gb. Other Maxtor and Seagate hds are for data storage.

Mahalo in advance to all!

Answer:***seagate Barracuda 500gb High Temp Resolution?***

Welcome to MajorGeeks!

Those hard drives seem a bit too toasty! One thing I would try is remove the side of the case and let a house fan blow into it. If the stuff runs cooler, you have an airflow problem. If it does not, I would try to verify the HD and video card temps.

You can get inexpensive aftermarket video card coolers that work much better than most stock coolers.

(new ASUS ZenBook UX305 with preloaded W10, all updates installed)

Answer:Seagate 500gb drive not accepted for File History

Go to Settings/Update and security/Backup make sure File History is ON. In File History, Choose Select a different Drive. Click the Stop Using this drive to remove the old backup drive. Then Add your current Drive.

Hi guys, got a one of these drives mentioned above and have lost the power adapter. (I think the missus has binned it by accident)Does anyone know how I can get my hands on a new one. I can't even find a voltage reading on the back so if anyone has a similar one, can you tell me what it says on the power adapter so I can confirm I am getting the right thing.Cheers in advance,Colin.

Answer:Seagate free agent 500gb power adapter

click here is the closest image that I can find for the adapter. Was it this one that you lost? Did you also throw the box and instructions away as they may help? The Amazon picture shows the adapter is made by Elementec. You might try a Google search and see if you can find them. Other than that sorry can't help.

So I have been working in the tech field for sometime and I know about the problems with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB drives going into brick mode. I wanted to buy two of them because from what I knew about their problem was that it's a firmware problem with the drives and that's why they go into brick mode in a few months? Now if I buy them and update their firmware from seagate's website I should be good then and no more brick modes?

All,I just bought the Seagate 500GB 5400RPM to replace the Hitachi 160GB 7200RPM. I used Acronis True Image 9.5 to clone the disk. Everything copied over just fine. However, I could not boot from the new disk. The T61P did not recognized the new hard drive? I used WinXP CD and boot off of it and it did not detect the new hard drive? I also used Acronis Disk Director to ensure that the new HD is a Primary/Active? Note, I have updated the T61P laptop to the latest firmware, and latest storage drivers prior to  clone it. Still no love. If I connected the new HD using the SATA to USB external and boot off of the original disk. The system can see it just fine. I am not sure what else I can try? Any advice. Cheers,

Answer:T61P and Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB Hard Drive ....

Hi Surfup, With the 5400.6 installed internally on SATA, if you boot from SeaTools for DOS CD does it see the 5400.6? If so, it's not a bad idea to run the SeaTools tests on your new drive. If SeaTools does NOT see your new drive, then you might try:Change the BIOS settings SATA mode from "compatible" to "AHCI";Jumper the 5400.6 to force 1.5 Gb/s. Please post back with results of above...

Hi,I have a T61p with vista ultimate.I upgrade my hard drive to 7200.4 500gb(new firmware) which goes into the main sata port. At first it was fine.Recently after I used system update to install some new drivers, the system boot up way too slow. It takes 40 seconds from POST screen (Intel AMT) to start loading vista. And then Windows boots up normally. Windows is working perfectly with no problems with the drivers. The delay happened after BIOS check the hardwares, then stop for 40 seconds with hard drive idle. And after that Vista starts to load normally.I tried setting the 7200.4 working on sata 1.5g mode, did not help. However if I pulled out the 7200.4, working only with the ultra bay with another hard drive(7200.3), everything is fine.Working only with 7200.4 in the ultrabay---- slow boot again.I am thinking there might be some problems with T61p and 7200.4 together. But it did work OK in the first few days before I used system update.I don't want to do the clean install again because it cost a lot of time.Has anyone else come across this problem , and if so, is therea fix? Thanks a lot!PS: I just find a similar case here http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?message.uid=132699Message Edited by raymentchen on 06-16-2009 02:24 PM

I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP3 & current updates. I have a Seagate 500GB SATA hard drive that has been replaced 2 times now. I bought a brand new Seagate drive. It had problems so I had it replaced under the Seagate warranty & they sent me a refurbished drive. That drive went bad & I had that one replaced with another refurb drive & so forth. I'm on my 3rd drive in this system. I use it in my recording studio Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to record audio & MIDI.

It seems to run fine for a while, then it starts making crackling & popping noises, so I defrag it, then I run "chkdsk c: /f /r" & let that run when my system reboots. Right now, it has been running for more than 7 hours & it's only 35% of the way through stage 4 of 5, so I'm not sure how much longer it's going to take to complete. I've run chkdsk before on previous drives in this system & it can take up to 10 hours to complete.

I've tried swapping out the cables & changing the SATA ports & power connectors & none of that seems to help. Sometimes my system will just crash & I come in in the morning to find my system sitting at a boot prompt & telling me it can't find the boot drive. I go into the BIOS & have to reset the boot drive setup or sometimes I have to power the system off, open it up & pull the power & SATA cables off & reseat them.

Before I sent the Seagate drive back to Seaga... Read more

OUCH! that's the wrong sequence;

a) fix all errors eg chkdsk c: /f /r

[ b) delete temps with cleanmgr ]

c) now run defrag

running defrag w/o first getting the filesystem fixed (chkdsk c: /f /r), you can scramble good data into bad blocks!

I cloned the 80GB original hard drive to a new Seagate 500GB hard drive using Macrium Reflect.  When I installed the new drive in the drive bay it would not boot up, giving the message that no hard drive is detected.  Went into setup and changed ATA mode to AHCI - no help, drive still not recognized.
I removed the new drive and replaced the old 80GB, it boots normally.
What am I missing here?  Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I am considering adding a 500GB external drive (via a USB 2.0 port) to my Windows XP system, which is a Mesh Athlon-based PC built in 2001, to store phots, music etc. (No applications)When I upgraded the internal drive from an 80GB to a 300GB drive 18 months ago, I had real problems as the BIOS would not recognise drives beyond 100GB. After updating the BIOS I ended up with a system that thinks the IDE-connected drives are actually SCSI drives. (See Helproom thread click here if you are interested in this problem!)Re the new external drives, I have two questions:1. Is there a limit (in terms of disk size) as to what an older XP system might recognise, when an external disk is connected via a USB port?2. What software is available to parition a 500GB drive? (I think Partition Magic only goes to 300GB.)Thanks for your help.Tallboy

Answer:Adding a 500GB external drive to Windows XP

1. I'm not sure there is, but it's certainly not less than 500GB.2. Why do you want to partition? It's not necessary to partition an external drive, just use different folders.

Hi, here is what I would really, REALLY like to do.

Right now I have windows xp installed on my internal hard drive that is only 30GB and I have a secondary hard drive that is only 20GB.

I went out and found a Cavalry 500GB External Hard Drive at Walmart for $40 cheap? Yes I know.. I was so excited I had to get it.

I have been searching around Google for anything that would kind of take you step by step on how to do install Windows on an external hard drive. All I can seem to come across with was people just talking about if it was possible or not.. Some say it is and some say no it's not. Other things I have seen was that people were talking about editing the OS cd. I would really like to stay away from editing the disc.

My computer does boot from USB-HD I have all ready checked on that. Also I have tried just booting from the CD and installing on to the external hard drive but it gets as far as copying all the files over then I get that evil blue screen.

What I want to know is does anyone know how to install Windows XP or Vista on the external hard drive, so then I can use my external hard drive instead of a 30GB hard drive? Or is there a way to combine the 30GB and 20GB hard drive to make one 50GB hard drive? If there is away of combining the 30 and 20 together can i do it without reinstalling windows? I don't want to have to back up my files and make a list of the programs I have downloaded.

Thanks in advance,
Sean

Loosening the screw at the HD panel does not release the panel.  Has anyone removed the original hard disk from the U330?  What am I missing?

Answer:I'm trying to upgrade my U330 hard disk to a 500GB 7200 Seagate drive

For U330, you need to loose 3 screws. One screw located at the hard disk panel and two screws located next to the first screw. They are in the same position of the hard disk screw hole. After losen those screws, You can pool the hard disk tray out.

I just got my laptop back from having the fan replaced and the data has been wiped. I thought this wouldn't be an issue because I'd made a backup using the Seagate dashboard program, but as it turns out, none of my programs will transfer over. I have my JPGs and other images, but all my games and software aren't working. In addition, the Seagate restore menu has an option to restore files to their original locations, but for some reason it's not working for me. I feel like in hindsight, I should have used the Windows 10 image backup (or whatever it's called, I don't recall), but it's too late for that :P Anyway, does anyone have advice on how I can fix it? I think my local computer store can do a data transfer, but I'm wondering if there's another way. Thanks.

Answer:Restoring Windows 10 PC from Seagate External Drive

That's sad news - I would challenge your repairer why the data was wiped for a simple fan repair since there is no reason for this. Indeed, I would demand compensation since you have a lot of work to recover from this situation (see below)

I found the Dashboard guide here https://www.seagate.com/files/www-co...r-guide-us.pdf

Unfortunately, Dashboard is useless for system recovery since it doesn't backup your OS system files.

You will need to clean install Windows from scratch if you have no other system backup - see Windows 10 - Clean Install. You will then need to reinstall all your programs and restore your user files from Dashboard. Your data may be lost sadly if this doesn't work and you have no other backup.

In future I recommend you use a disk imaging program to backup your OS system files and user data like the excellent program Macrium Reflect Free. Use this to make regular backups to your external drive and preferably a second external drive so you have two backup drives in case one fails. I wouldn't bother with Dashboard since Reflect is far more capable.

I pop the adapter in, nothing happens, plug the stuff to the computer, nothing happens. I got no clue what to do really. IF it can destroy the adapter if I put a ac adapter for a portable computer inte it while it was off, that can be it. OR if it got broken by safely lying in my bag. Just tell me how I can fix this, Please. I'm So thankful for anyone who can help me with this.

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

Answer:Seagate 1.5TB Harddrive

that...is an odd RPM value for a HD

Following my old computer crash, I invested in a new Mesh computer loaded with Windows 7.

I bought a cradle for the old HDD and plugged that in and Windows 7 recognised it straight away and I can pull stuff off it without any difficulty.

The Seagate Freeagent (now called Classic I believe - the brown/yellow one) refused to come up as a drive and nothing I do will make it do so. I have downloaded the 64 bit Seagate Manager from the Seagate website but to no avail.

It appears as a device in the Devices but right-clicking only gives you two tabs, neither of which do anything. Updating the driver has no effect. The drivers still come up as Windows32 drivers. I even formatted the Freeagent but with the same result.

At one point, Windows 7 froze but disconnecting the Freeagent cured that.

Any ideas? Not being very computer savvy, I don't really understand why it recognises my old XP HDD but not the Freeagent.
