Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

Question: Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I am not sure if I am posting in the right section of the forum so forgive me if i am not. I am using a compaq laptop with windows 7 for an OS. The G, H, 8, and backspace keys decided to stop working. For some reason the only way to get any of those buttons to work is if you put on CAPS lock and hold shift. Then you can use those keys. Im not sure if any other keys have been affected as of yet. Ive tried to google for a solution, which normally helps me fix any computer issues I come accross. So far I can only find the reccomendation to hold the function button and press numlock, and its supposed to remove the, "sticky keys." I am not quite sure what exactly the sticky keys are but I didnt think it was the problem here, and the laptop doesnt seem to have a function button anyways. I have seen the option to turn on sticky keys when holding shift on other computers or tapping shift 8 times, I dont know if it was turned on or if sticky keys cause certain keys to not work unless you hold shift while CAPS lock is on, but if this sounds like something you can help with please advise me of any suggestions. I appreciate any time you take to help or even if youve read this far. Thank you

Answer:Certain keyboard keys not working unless you press caps lock and hold shift?

First thing you do is get a canned air and clean out the keyboard... slowly, carefully, then do it again with the laptop upside down. That rules out the most common cause... dirt, dust, and debris.

hi. sorry for the lack of capitalization because one of the problems i am having is that my shift keys wont work. i replaced my motherboard myself with one provided by lenovo and everything is working except for the backlight and the shift key. since every other key is working i feel it might be a software issue but cannot say for certain. any help will be awesome. thank you.

Answer:y510p. replaced motherboard, now shift keys and keyboard backlight not working.

A few things to try.......

Try booting into Windows Safe mode to see if the problem happens there.

Try using a USB keyboard to see if the Shift keys operate on the USB board.

Try uninstalling the keyboard driver, reboot the computer and install a fresh copy of the keyboard driver.  The link below is for the available drivers from Lenovo for your model. Just select your operating system in the top box for the correct driver listing.......

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-y-series-laptops/ideapad-y510p...

If none of the above work..... disassemble the laptop and reseat the ribbon cable for the keyboard.  I would also use a soft cloth and some alcohol to lightly wipe the contacts of the ribbon cable.  Possibly skin oil or dirt got on the contacts.

Hi all, I also have the problem of having some keys on the keyboard that are not functioning any more (for example Backspace, t, left Shift, ...).  Computer is a Lenovo 3000 N100 notebook and roughly 1.5 years old. Now I am not sure whether a change of the keyboard will solve the issue or whether the problem is caused by something on the mainboard. My question is: Has anyone experience in this issue and has a clue about the root cause? It seems that I am not alone with this problem. I don't want to invest in a keyboard if the root cause is something else. I already disassembled and assembled the keyboard to check the mechanical connection between the keyboard and the mainboard. Effect: none. Thank you for your advice. Axel

For some reason a windows keyboard shortcut I use a lot (right click Shift del, to permanently delete a file) has stopped working. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to trouble shoot this or get it working again?

It only works if I select and click delete from the menu while holding down the shift key, but of course, that's not much of a shortcut.

Thanks.

Answer:standard keyboard shortcuts stopped working

when that's issue you got??
i'm guess maybe you have change something or you hold shift twice times, so the stickykeys change.

Now, a similar problem is being faced by my friend. He uses a USB keyboard and suddenly, the "A, S, Z and 1(!)" have stopped working. Is it a hardware or a software problem and what can be the possible solution?

Any help will really be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Answer:Some keys of the keyboard have stopped working

I cannot find a keyboard related software or driver for your laptop. I will research the issue more.

Obviously it just does not want you searching for asus or azuz (which would be changed in google to "did you mean asus?") laptops for a replacement

Hi Everyone,

Some of my keys on my laptop keyboard have stopped working suddenly. I'm not sure if i've accidently pressed something or if it's something to do with the FN keys but i'd love some help if anyone might be able to!
Keys not working:

Question mark and forward slash key
the last letter of the alphabet key
the arrow keys
and the 0 on the right hand side numbers pad

Does that sound like something to do with some settings or is my keyboard malfunctioning

Thank you in advance for help!! :)

Answer:Certain keys on keyboard have stopped working suddenly

I cannot say for sure but I think it has nothing to do with settings. It is not known to me that there is some option where you can disable some keyboard keys.
To be honest I think it is keyboard malfunction.

> the arrow keys
Enter BIOS settings and check if these keys work in BIOS.

I woke up this morning and some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working.

Im nearly 100% sure it isnt a faulty keyboard but rather a virus or something that is remapping my keyboard. The keyboard has been working fine up until today when the f, y, m, and ' keys stopped working all at once. Nothing spilled on the keyboard.. nothing like that. Ive tried a system restore but it didnt solve anything.

I tried to do some research on my own, but didnt find much.. one guy had the same problem, but I didnt see any concrete fixes.

One thing that makes me think its a remapping problem is that when i hold down the f, m, y, and ' keys and hit x, the return is " \eqx ". Holding different combos of the keys that arent working yields different results, but results nonetheless, and since theres some sort of return when i hit the keys, i assume they still work but something on the computer happened. The other person who had this issue that I found gave me the idea of holding down the keys and hitting x, since he did it and had the same results.

Is there a known virus that I may have? Any way to restore the key set/map to factory defaults? Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

Thanks

So, randomly one day, I turned on my laptop and couldn't log in, because a lot of my keys weren't working. The keys are:  4, 7, =, q, w, e, r, u, i, o, p, [, a, s, d, k, l, ;, and some other keys like delete.  I've tried setting bios settings to default, tried updating bios to the latest. Tried the "removing the battery" trick, tried removing hp support assistance, tried uninstalling keyboards (including hidden) via device manager, and tried installing pretty much every driver on the HP website.  USB keyboard works, but it's not an ideal fix. Would really appreciate any help that can be offered please.  Thank you!

After installing windows 10 on my HP laptop PC, some keyboard keys have stopped working. The keys that don't work are: { 'escape' 'g' 'h' 'backspace' }. I am sure it is not a hardware problem because on occasion, all the keys that previously did not work, start working again. In fact, as I am typing this thread, my keys are working correctly. When they stop working, I try to uninstall or update the driver in device manager but that does not work. Keep in mind this started happening after installing Windows 10. I have not had this problem in Windows 8.1.

Just to clarify, are you talking about the key pad on the right end of the keyboard? I have 2 Inspiron 15R and see the same issue. On one I did a Registry edit to let Windows save the last start, NumLock On, and seems to turn it on when restarting. I think the solution is on this forum.

Hello to everyone,

Everything started a month ago or so.
My laptop (a Toshiba Satellite P850-12Z) keyboard started to fail. First was the backspace key, but afterwards was the numpad 3 key, and the enter key.

They start working if I hit them repeatedly around 10 seconds or so. You can imagine that this is very annoying and frustrating.

Do I need a new keyboard? For more information, the keyboard also fails in linux.

In case I need a new keyboard I think that Toshiba has very poor quality, and I will never buy again a Toshiba Laptop.

My last laptop was from another brand and the keyboard never failed in 5 years.

Answer:Satellite P850-12Z - Several keyboard keys stopped working

> Do I need a new keyboard?

Probably yes.
Connect external keyboard and check if its working properly.

If the external USB keyboard would work, then there is no problem with the keyboard controller but with internal keyboard.

Just setting up a new computer. Have a logitech receiver and wireless mouse + keyboard ... batteries in both are good (I checked with voltmeter).

So everything is fine and I'm setting up windows. I go to local security policy to disable the administrator account and then go to rename it, and find out my keys aren't working!! But for some odd reason, the shortcut buttons to calculator and internet explorer work just fine... just none of the keys (numbers or letters) work. cntrl alt del doesn't work.

So I try a keyboard that is from a working computer, and that won't work either. I'm really stumped. The USB ports should be fine as the MOUSE works fine (the wireless mouse and also other mouses work fine). The motherboard is brand new.
The working keyboard I tested doesn't seem to be even getting power on this new computer. Not sure why. I can't even get into the BIOS cause the keyboard doesn't work!

Am running Windows ME with a Saitek keyboard. Following a complete re-install of everything (thanks to a system crash), I find that the only thing not working is Ctrl + Shift + Arrow keys to highlight folders/files etc. to remove/copy on block. Have even tried just Shift + Arrow keys, but each time the cursor just runs along each file/folder without grouping them together and I end up at the end file/folder only. At present, the only way to remove/copy large amounts of files is to open the main folder and 'select all' from the 'File' menu. I have looked at previous threads regarding this subject, but no help, and Microsoft knowledge base is a nightmare.Anybody got any ideas?

Since upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, the shift keys (both of them) on my pavilion have developed a problem. After a non-specific amount of time, but never any longer than a few minutes after boot (and sometimes straight away) the shift keys do not work. If I revert to Windows 8.1 they function perfectly, but if I then upgrade to Windows 10 again, the problem returns. I have tried rolling back (and updating) the synaptics touchpad driver as I found some posts that suggested this might be relevant. This does nothing.  I have connected an external keyboard. This works fine under Windows 10. I have removed the keyboard in device manager and had it picked up again on a reboot. None of the things I have tried have made a difference. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

Hi i am hoping someone can help with my problem.  I have a G505 laptop for over a year now.  About two months ago some keys on the right hand side of the keyboard stopped working.  Mainly the shift key, enter key, return key.  Other keys around these working fine.  I cannot use Word or type emails now and rely on the onscreen keyboard to compete return or enter functions which is painful.  Also, sometimes when I boot the laptop up, the screen is very dark.  The only way to rectify this is to reboot (sometimes several times) or for some reason if I plug in a HDMI cable to link laptop to TV, the brightness returns straight away. I would be very grateful for any guidance on these issues. Many thanks in advance and kind regards,JB

Can anyone help out with this keyboard issue? I have tried rebooting from last date update in control panel but problem is older than last date available.  I have also tried to shut down, use recovery key to call up recovery menu but i cannot select system recovery as i need the enter/return key to do so!!!!!!  Im so frustrated at this point.  Please any suggestions to above issue???  Thanks in advance.  PS  onscreen keyboard works for return/enter if that helps any.

Hello, recently I have a problem typing with my laptop. Mutliple times a day, both of the shift keys, and the scroll lock key turns on by themselves. These are the problems I face when typing: 1. Unwanted text is highlighted2. Letters are capital although caps lock is not on.3. When I try to browse in Google Chrome, text gets deleted and random windows start to pop up4. For some reason the word "QWEPRUIO" starts appearing sometimes when I type.5. Someimes while I type, suddenly the text gone missing and an asterik * appears.6. Also when this happens, my wi-fi gets turned off automatically. IT guys at my work place tried fixing it but we can't seem to find the problem source. Please help me, this is getting rather annoying especially I am using the laptoo for work!It took me more than half an hour to type a decent email to my client  Thanks!

I have this problem too right now.    So far I've not found any of the fixes on the internet (language etc) to work.  However I did find that if I press both shift keys at the same time, it clears the condition and then it happens again.....randomly.....  I am on an HP Elitebook and on Windows 7 (I think).

I already know it's not sticky keys. If the shift key is held down for too long, it locks the keyboard entirely. The only way I've found to fix it is to log out. It doesn't make the usual high pitch noise that sticky keys makes, but there is a much lower tone that plays whenever a key is hit after it locks. I believe it's some sort of safety, like sticky keys, but I've checked those settings and can press shift as much as I want as long as it isn't held down for, I'd estimate, 10-15 seconds.

Answer:Keyboard locks if shift held-Not Sticky keys

You have got keyboard Filter Keys turned on. Using your mouse go into Ease of Access > Keyboard and untick Filter keys, click on Apply, click on OK
If you want to check that out, when you are in Ease of Access > Keyboard and Filter keys, click on 'Set up Filter Keys' and you will see the keyboard shortcut to activate Filter keys is 'hold down shift for 8 seconds' then follows the settings for the delayed responses to keys being pressed.

I recently (w/in last 2 weeks) purchased and received an E545 and after less than 8 hours of use the keyboard is extremely loose on the right hand side, primarily where the number pad sits but also extend into the right side of the alpha keyboard.  By losse, I mean that it doesn't sit well and when you press down on a key in that area of the keyboard, the entire right side of keyboard depresses.  ti's very disconcerting when typing and also extremely loud, which is an issue since I use the machine in meetings to take notes.

I've not seen much in searching, except for threads that are several years old.  I wanted to get some user input before contacting Lenovo, as I'm sure it will be better advice and less of a hassle.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:E545 keyboard problem - many keys not working - loose keyboard cable

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the entire keyboard of your Lenovo ThinkPad E545 depresses on key presses.

From what you have posted, it sounds like a keyboard flex. Keyboard flexing occurs if the board supporting the keys is not rigid or if the design of the keyboard is faulty. For good keyboards, the effect shouldn't be noticeable.

If you feel excessive flexing in your keyboard, try to reseat the keyboard. Since your system is under warranty, I would strongly suggest you to take assistance from Lenovo technical support.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

Hello everyone. Today my shift and ctrl keys stopped working correctly... it happened while I was playing and later when I tried to change the language using Alt + Shift. I checked if Sticky Keys and other similar options weren't turned on by accident, but they weren't.

And after some time spent in trying to fix the problem I opened the On-Screen Keyboard and noticed that when I use my Ctrl key, Shift is pressed automatically as well (it's just what On-Screen Keyboard says). The same thing happens when I press Shift, then the Ctrl key "presses itself". It so happens that all four (left and right shift, and left and right ctrl) keys are pressed at the same time, when I press just one of them.

Does everyone know where the problem could be from and how I can fix it... it's really annoying, I can't use any of the combinations like Ctrl + V, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + A, etc. The problem started while I was playing Assassin's Creed; I sometimes hear sounds like too-much-buttons-pressed while I play it, but I've never had this problem until today. I have no idea what it could be, I tried everything I know.

If it helps, the problem is still there while I chat or surf the web through Asus Express Gate, when the windows isn't running at all.

PS: Sorry if I used strange phrases or words, I am not a native English speaker.

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue.  However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

hi,
i'm having a problem with my toshiba laptop keyboard. about a week ago i noticed i was no longer able to use the control key to copy and paste, but i rarely use that key for anything else, so i didn't think much of it except that i must've accidently changed some command. now, my shift key isn't working--as you can tell from the lack of capitalization in this. i think this is a different problem than what was addressed in earlier posts about shift key problems in toshiba laptops. in my case, the shift key worked only sporadically. currently, it's not working at all. first the right one stopped working, now the left one isn't working either. there doesn't seem to be any pattern to when they do/don't work, so it seems unlikely that these keys suddenly got stuck or something. i'm checking for viruses now. does anyone have any other ideas? (now it's working...that's so strange, and annoying).
Thanks,
Laurel

I know this issue has been reported in other network blogs but no one ever seems to have an answer except onefellow who states he found a driver on the support.lenovo.com site but his link doesn't work!  Simply put, underWindows 7/64-bit (and booting DOS which I tried too), the left and right shift keys on my Lenovo Ideapad Y510produce odd characters like {}'s and |'s when pressed.  Yes I have actually replaced the keyboard, both old and newproduce this issue.  This seems like a BIOS issue somehow, smart keyboard.  I inherited this unit from one of ourusers, I know it originally ran a pre-installed Vist 32bit installation but had WIn7 when I got it.  I have reinstalledWindows 7 and obtained  compatible card reader and ACPI drivers and added the ATK hot keys drivers before and after I had this issue (that I recall).  Is this a special BIOS behaviour for the shift keys that there is a special Windows keyboard driver to handle? The unit is running the latest BIOS from the support website (I re-burned it just in case). The system works perfectly in every other way, would be ashame to toss it just over this one issue. Thanks.

This is going to sound like a really weird problem and I cannot figure it out.  When I am typing and press the Shift key to capitalize a letter (like at the beginning of a sentence), when I let the Shift key go, it feels and looks like it has returned/bounced back up, but when I continue to type, it capitalizes all of my letters as if the CapsLock key is pressed (but it is not).  I have to hit the Shift key a few times before it will ?release? and let me type in lower case again.  This also happens with the Ctrl key.  But when I press the Space bar, it does not type a space.  After a few hits of the Space bar, it will finally register. I called Lenovo and they said it was a bad keyboard.  The overnighted me a new keyboard (that really impressed me) and I immediately installed it.  After a few hours of use, it started happening again.  I became discouraged, but then realized something? It ONLY happens when I am using Internet Explorer 7.  If I load MS Word, I can type and nothing screws up.  The keyboard works flawlessly.  As a matter of fact, I am typing this in Word because it is too frustrating typing in the provided box.  I am using Vista Business SP1.  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I have not tried to connect to my router using an Ethernet cable, but this happens on any wireless connection, LWAN & WWAN, and in different WiFi hotspots; and my wireless connections are fas... Basic: OS = Windows 7 Pro; computer is a Toshiba Satellite L70-A
Yesterday, I had numerous working shortcuts to shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+G to start GoogleEarth). This morning, after seeing an error message related to APO3GUI, and finding it related to DTS sound, I un-checked the DTS Studio Sound in the startup tab of System Configuration, and restarted the computer. I had not, prior to that, attempted to use any shortcut keys. However, after the restart, I found my shortcut keys had all "died." Subsequently, in my attempts to get them working again, I have done the following, in order, with restarts between each one, to no avail:

1. Re-enabled DTS Studio Sound in System Configuration.
2. Checked Windows updates and saw two Windows Security updates, KB 3212646 and KB3207752, showed as having been installed today (1/12). Uninstalled both from Windows Update.
3. Ran System File Checker -- no issues found.
4. Un-assigned and reassigned a shortcut combination.
5. Started in SAFE mode.
6. Started from "Last Known Good Configuration".
7. Did System Restore back two days.

I'm out of ideas!

P.S. -- wasn't sure which forum this would be better in, so here by default.

This issue usually begins when I'm using the on screen keyboard.  Everything works perfectly fine and all of the sudden some of the letters on the keyboard will start defaulting to shortcuts.  For example, the "p" button will try to open a screen to allow me to set different displays or monitors. Whenever I do a restart, the problem is resolved, however, it eventually will come back to haunt me.  I would like a permanent fix to this issue.  I've read some other posts about keyboard issues but none of them seem to work for me. This problem sometimes won't allow me to enter my password for screen unlock because one of the letters in my password just happen to be a "shortcut" or a "hot key" for a random windows setting. Please help me Lenovo!  I just purchased my Yoga 2 Pro a week ago!

Hiya, it might be a bit silly to ask but up until recently I've been able to set keyboard shortcut combinations for particular folder shortcuts and use them. Say if I wanted to quick-launch the music folder or some other one, I just pressed Ctrl-Alt-and whatever letter after it and bam - there it was.
But now that keyboard shortcut thingy in Windows Explorer doesn't work any more for a reason that's beyond any common sense...

I don't know if this a problem with my hardware or software of the laptop.

I've had this problem for months now.

It has to do with my SHIFT button. Every time I press it and press on another key, it acts as if it's a different command.

For example,

Shift + 1, which should give an exclamation mark, gives the command of Esc.

Shift + U, gives the command of Undo.

Shift + E gives the command of PageUp.

Shift + i gives the command of F11

Shift + _(underscore) adds a space before the underscore.

...... The list is longer.

It also affects other programs i use, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. In those programs, Shift + other keys act as commands such as F7, F8, Ctrl + t.
I don't know what to do, or what the problem is. My laptop is virus-free and has been for a long time.

Please, what can I do about this? How do I even begin to fix this?

thank you.

Hi! I am a new thinkpad user (T470) and one of the reasons that made me pick it up was the famous keyboard quality and the trackpoint, which I intended to use for fast programing. As many new users, one thing that I found odd was the position of the Ctrl and Fn keys. I know that I can switch them in the BIOS or in the Lenovo settings app. However, after 1 month of switching back and forth, I decided to keep the default layout for the following reasons:1) I get it: Ctrl closer to the center of the keyboard makes it less of a stretch to press Ctrl+Letter, while Fn+Letter is never used.2) There is an unnavoidable, backlit "Crtl" and "Fn" written in the keys. So, if I am in switch mode, I can't avoid pressing the wrong key if I happen to look at it (it's just like trying to say the color of the words RED and GREEN).3) The "Ctrl" key is larger and slighty to the left, so even if I am in switch mode and I want to copy-paste, I still hit the "Ctrl" key every time regardless, introducing a mute Fn+C and next pasting the wrong piece of code. This is way more  annoying than just getting used to the thinkpad layout and use the big fat Ctrl key that says "Ctrl" (and honestly, it is fine after a week). Now... considering the above, and after accepting that Thinkpads have Ctrl in the right place and the other 90% of laptops are wrong, can someone explain me how am I supposed to press Crtl+Shift+[...] on a non-US keyboard? (with a short LeftShift and a < key). &n... Read more

Answer:Keyboard ergonomics - Ctrl+Shift on european keyboard

Very interesting question. I don't normally use Crtl+Shift+[...] for much of anything. My laptop does have a European keyboard. I tried to press the keyboard combinations you just mentioned, and they were quite difficult. As much as I love the standard ThinkPad layout, I've been thinking about swapping them in the BIOS. I go between a full-size desktop keyboard & my laptop. My desktop keyboard doesn't have a Fn key because Lenovo doesn't make a full-size ThinkPad keyboard with a number pad for stand-alone use. I find switching between the two challenging. I tend to hit Fn or Ctrl when I want the other key until my brain adjusts to th switch.

Hi guys,

I have the following problem that appeared a couple of weeks ago. I use Left Alt + Shift to switch between 2 input languages for the keyboard. Everything was fine until recently when this combination stopped changing the keyboard language in IE8. I've found that now I'm able to switch the keyboard layout with Left Alt + Shift + Shift (in other words pressing Shift two times while holding Alt down) and also it seems that other people posting on the Internet have had the same problem. But I couldn't find an answer how to fix it. It's not the biggest problem but it is a little bit frustrating cause in all other applications it is working as it is intended, only in IE it's not... Any ideas what could be the cause for this?

machine: Dell XPS15 2014 with Windows 8.1
Windows 8 seems to have keyboard shortcuts that conflict with some software shortcuts.
I found this out when, using MS-Word, I hit the Ctrl + F1 shortcut, which toggles the ribbon, up to Windows 7.
Thanks to Windows 8, what this shortcut does is display a graphical representation of how bright the screen is.
Today, working with Adobe Indesign, I tried to use a shortcut specific to that software that allows one to create multiple instances of the same graphic - Alt + drag + right arrow key. What I got instead was my screen getting rotated 90 degrees.
This is a VERY serious issue, as clearly one can expect a raft of such Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts to interfere with professional workflow - just how many are there?
Can someone please confirm whether or not Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts can be disabled, and if yes, how.
Many thanks
Guy Cruls

I recently installed Windows 7 onto my Eee PC 1005HA. At some point recently, my CTRL-A for Select All and CTRL-S for Saving keyboard shortcuts stopped working for some reason. I've tried to find out how to fix this, but I have not found any answers anywhere online. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Adeb09 and welcome

I have a new Windows 10 desktop machine & like to use keyboard shortcuts to launch programs & folders. Some of them work & some don't. Some work some of the time.

I saw some old threads on this, & tried some of their suggestions, like disabling Services/Superfetch & some background apps. When I tried this, it worked at first. I had no delay on a shortcut that previously didn't work. However, after rebooting, the hotkey didn't work any more.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Thank you in advance,

You need to make sure that you are using the Windows 10 Shortcuts.

I am having a strange issue with keyboard shortcuts on different versions of Win 7 (32-bit Ultimate and Home Premium) and I have not been able to find any information specifically about this from the searches I have done.

The problem is that the new keyboard shortcuts that were introduced with Windows 7 do not work on two of my computers. They do work on two other machines. I cannot find anything that might cause this and I am hoping someone here can help me solve it.

All the regular keyboard shortcuts work on all machines, including Windows logo key shortcuts. For example, if I type the Windows key on any computer, the Start menu appears. Shortcuts such as Win + and Win Esc also work normally. However, about a half-dozen or so Windows 7 shortcuts do not work on two machines, but do work on the other two. Examples of these shortcuts are the arrow keys together with the Windows key and a few others. If I press Win and the Up Arrow key on two of the computers, I get a full screen window. On the other two computers, nothing happens. This is what I am trying to fix.

The computers that work normally include a home build with the GeForce 8000 chipset and an Acer Aspire T690. Both of these computers are running 32-bit Home Premium, build 7600. Another Acer T690 that is identical to the first one is running 32-bit Ultimate, build 7601. The shortcuts do not work on it. A fourth computer is a Compaq Presario also running 32-bit Home Premium and the shortcuts do not work on it.... Read more

Answer:Keyboard Shortcuts not working?

Generally if a keyboard has special keys, you need to install software to get those keys to work.
What is the brand and model of the keyboard?

Hi everyone, forum newby here. I've searched high and low for a solution to this problem to no avail. I'm hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction without recourse to major surgery. I'm relatively PC literate but have only recently come to Win 8.1 and now Win 10 having bought a new laptop - HP Spectre 360 i5-5200 CPU, 4GB SSD - and not clogging it up with spurious files & programs like my trusty desktop machine.

About a month ago, when still running Win 8.1, I realised that the WinX shortcut/right click option to bring up the 'power user' menu had ceased working. This appeared to be a simple fix, according to the on-line community, and caused by the WinX folder in "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX" being missing/corrupted. However in my case the WinX folder is present & populated. Its the same for all usernames in user folder.
Somewhere else I picked up that another program might have been installed which has high-jacked the WinX command. Well I have only installed a couple of reputable and well-used non-MS programs and they work fine on my Win10 desktop PC.
I hoped that moving from Win 8.1 to Win 10 might resolve the issue but there is no change - WinX or right-clicking the corner flag refuses to fire up the 'power user' menu.

So here I am now out of options for restoring the WinX shortcut functions. Any ideas anyone?

I have set a keyboard shortcut : ctrl + Alt + I for Internet Explorer browser by right clicking on its quick launch icon and going into its properties. I have set similar shotcuts to some more applications. But none of them work. i.e., They don't launch the respective apps when clicked. They work perfectly well on my desktop PC. Has anybody else observed this?

I made similar experience. When I added short cuts to the IE-Symbol on Quickstart or on Startmenu I got no reaction.ButWhen I added the short cut to IE-Symbol on Menu "Programs" it worked. Try it.

I installed windows 7 a few days ago with little problems, the only thing that isn't working correctly as far as I can tell is the keyboard shortcuts. (ex: windows key + up = maximize) things like that don't work, while ctrl + c = copy does.

you guys always get me answers quickly, and correctly.
thanks in advance and happy holidays.

Does WINKEY + R launch the Run dialog? Does WINKEY + D show your desktop?

If neither of those work, I'd suspect that something's up with your Windows key...What kind of keyboard do you have?
