Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

Question: Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

I use W7 Home Premium and would like to make a backup of my entire system. I will use the image method and the combination of my C and D discs are about 125GB total. It appears to me that this Seagate will do the job, however, I would like some opinions before I purchase it. Thanks

Preferred Solution: Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB drive for a friend a few days ago. I was able to get it connected to a machine running Windows XP SP2 just fine and I could see the drive ok. I noticed about 18GB or so was "used" even though there was only one 73MB PDF file visible when I viewed the drive contents. The drive has 232GB of free space, I believe.

I understand not all 250GB will be available for user data but is it reasonable for 18GB to be consumed by filesystem info?

Thanks!

Peace...

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,
James

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

This hard drive originally was in my brother's computer. He had XP installed, went to install Windows 7 and after the first reboot, it would just hang on the bios screen.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

I've been getting this "Windows - Delayed Write Failed" error for quite some time. It's strange though, because it seems to be happening totally randomly.

Here's what happens:

I could be using firefox 2 mins after I start up my computer or be playing a game 4 hours after I start my computer and then a delayed write failed error (or several) suddenly appears from the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen, failing to write either a system file of some sort or a file related to whatever program I happen to be using at the time. Then everything becomes extremely choppy and eventually totally freezes up. I then have to manually restart at which point it will either work normally or be slow and then freeze up during startup. For some reason, moving my HDs to different SATA ports (since my mobo has 4 ports) tends to fix the problem for a while before it starts happening again.

Does anyone happen to have any idea how to resolve this problem or what is causing it? Is my HD failing, does it have to do with my drivers/firmware/bios, or is it some sort of software bug or conflict?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

(btw there don't seem to be any problems with the disk when I check it with chkdsk or the seagate disk checking utility)

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

I have just bought this external drive and am trying to download the driver onto my laptop from the WD website, as I am running Windows 98SE. I have found the WD Essentials USB 2.0 driver and when I click the DOWNLOAD button a small screen appears with a blue line across the top and the words "File Download". However this box just flashes on and off all the time and locks up the computer. The only way to get rid of it is to switch the power off. I have enabled pop-ups as requested, and have also disabled Norton Antivirus 2005. I have no firewall. I have tried a number of times without success. Can you please help? Many thanks.

I think this must be fairly new but I cannot find any info or specification on HP website or with a search on Google. I particularly want to know if its file system is NTFS or FAT32 as my PC is Widows XP with NTFS. Maplin are the only people I have seen who have it on the shelf -not even Amazon have it as they still push the ?previous? 250GB model from HP.

Good Morning:I have Xp on one drive (120Gb) and Vista on another drive (200Gb) although I could move that one to another 120Gb drive.I also have a 250Gb Western Digital USB2 external drive which I would like to partition to make it a back-up for the two operating systems. Can anyone point me to an easy (and cheap) program to do that. And, will it be a problem to copy across since the 200Gb only contains about 110Gb currently? Thanks in advance!

i've tried to get help from the manufacturer but everything that they've told me to do is not working.

i'm in dire need of assistance.

Answer:i/o magic 250gb external drive - not being detected

You may want to check the drive on another computer because it should just be plug and play.

I guess there's a chance the drive is not partitioned or formated, If you you go to Disk Management does it show the drive? How about in Device Manager, is it listed there or are there any errors showing?

I?ve tried it under Slave, Master and Cable-Select Option but with no success. Any ideas? Periodically I hear from the disk a click about one second apart. Probably it?s gone bad, so if it has crashed, how can I recover data on it? How can I get XP recognize it?

I have been using this USB drive for some time. I have it divided in to three seperate partitions, but recently (and this is the second time this has happened) XP will no longer detect the already existing partitions on the drive. I am able to see the drive in device manager, it shows up as a WD 2500JB External USB Device, as well as in the manage option when right clicking My Computer. However in the manage window it shows the whole drive as unallocated space. I know that there are files on there, (several GB's of customer backups.) it was there just yesterday. Any ideas on how to get Xp to pull it's head out and see these partitions?

I've previously added two home made external disks, a 120Gb IBM and a 300Gb Maxtor, to my Medion PC (Pentium 3Ghz, 18 months old) without any problem. I'm trying to add a 250Gb Hitachi Deskstar but nothing happens - even the fact that a USB device has been plugged in is not recognised. As soon as I replace the disk with a 40Gb Maxtor, it all works fine, so the case and connections don't appear to be a problem. I've replaced the Deskstar, thinking it was faulty, but exactly the same happens with the new disk and Add New Hardware doesn't find anything. I'm on XP Home. Has anybody got any suggestions, please?

Answer:External Drive - 40Gb disk works but not 250Gb

I have experienced similar problems in the past and found that the drive had to be jumpered 'master' for the USB to see it.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? Would there be any conflict with this unit and W7.

I looked at this unit and it appears to me that it would be ideal for my laptop. I need about 120gb for backup of my C & D drives. I'm not sure if this unit is the best and find no place to compare it to other comparable products on the market.

If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

Hey there,

I recently picked up a Seagate 250 GB SATA HDD (model number: ST3250824AS). When I installed it, I did as I was exactly told. I disconnected the power and turned of the system, plugged the SATA cable from the HDD to the motherboard (I have an ASUS P4P800 motherboard), hooked up the power cable from the power supply to the HDD and closed the case up. When I powered up the system, Windows (I'm using XP Professional) recognized the HDD and added it to the device manager... but the problem is; its there is no icon displayed in My Computer. I dont know what to make of it. Could it be something with Windows? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi folks, I bought ThinkPad R61 3 years ago and it has been working perfectly. Last week however I dropped it down and as a result the original HDD is damaged. So I have bought new hard drive - SEAGATE 250GB SATA2/8MB 9.5mm and it turned out that I cannot install Windows XP (neither SP2 nor SP3) on it.The message from the Windows setup is: ?Setup did not find any hard disk drive installed in your computer.? Well, of course before the installation I have partitioned the hard drive (with Partition Magic) ? I have created primary drive, activated it, then I have formatted it.I tried everything I could think of but the result is the same ? Windows XP setup does not recognize the hard drive :-(Unfortunately I do not have recovery disks. Can anybody help me with advice how to get rid of this situation and install the Windows XP on the new SEAGATE drive? Thanks and best regards,Lyubomir

alright everyone! let me give the lowdown on the goings on.
Basically, my pc has died on me, but luckily i have a laptop. I cant afford a new pc yet, so i bought a hard drive usb caddy thing. it works a treat with my dvd writer, and with my other hard drive (200 gig Western Digital one, with partitions and windows on the drive), but this seagate one is being a bit more of a pain. the usb drive itself can handle upto 500 gig, and i have a usb 2.0 connection (so theres no compatibilty problems, and it works with the 200fine) also, i tried to put the hard drive in another pc as slave and it found it, but didnt bring it up in windows/my computer. its the same problem on my laptop, my usb caddy finds the drive, and the name, and says its connected, but doesent bring the drive up in any explorer windows etc...
im a bit worried now that the drive might be dead (i have LOADS of data on there that i really need 2 get my mitts on). when i go into hard drive management, the drive is found but has a yellow exclimation point next to it.
i was thinking it might need checkdisc being run on it, but i dont think it will find the drive when windows nexts boots up with it being a usb drive. im thinking of perhaps using knoppix to get into the drive to see if the data is still there etc... (but ive not used knoppix for well over a year and ive pretty much forgotten how to use it lol).

Last month the drive started going out - the green light would go off and it would no longer be recognized by my laptop. To reinterate, this problem only started a month or so...

I have not changed anything in my configuration..

I have tried the USB drive in a different port and have the same problem.. besides the power on the drive goes out so I don?t think it?s a USB issue.

I chatted with a Seagate tech today who told me I needed to go to radio shack and have something done with the AC adapter but I didn?t buy it there. Also Seagate rep told me to try another PC but I don?t have one..

I am concerned that I spent good hard earned money on this drive and its lasting only a year and that I might lose my data..

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Answer:Seagate External Drive 160gb (opening case to get out drive)help

If the drive is hosed then crack the case:
Look carefully along the joints for small openings, sometimes those are where you can insert a small flatblade screwdriver to start prying it apart. also take the same small screwdriver and start at some place on the case at the joints and see if you can pry one side away from the other to see where the tabs/catches are. You will have to explore to figure out your case. also on the bottom see if any labels there are covering screw holes - another trick they do. if you see a label that says this will void the warrenty if removed, that is a huge clue that label is covering a screw

I can't remove hardware device on Verbatim Flash drive to remove it.

Even after I close all the files, folders and programs in my computer.
It won't say "safe to remove device".

I have to switch off the computer to remove the flash drive.

Is this normal or what ?

If not what can be the problem ? I can fix ?

Is it safe to remove device even if I can't disable the usb flash drive ?
I closed all the files, fodlers and programs before I remove.

Thanks.

Answer:Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive

The computer may still be saving data to the Flash. Or it is caught in ROM. If your certain the transfer is complete, you can pull the drive. You may want to do a Check Disk on the Flash Drive to make sure it is in good order.

Hi,

When I switched my Laptop on yesterday the nice Seagate Icon for my external backup hard drive had vanished but has been replaced by a dull looking generic Windows page icon ? This external backup drive is the K:\ drive on my system.

I surfed google yesterday trying to find some advice on how to restore what was a very attractive Icon ? . . but have been struggling to find any advice I could understand or thought I'd be able to follow ?

On a positive note, I have located the exact file for the disappeared icon on my laptop (its called SeagatePortable.ico) and I have copied it to my desktop temporarily, but, I have no idea how to re-apply this icon to my K:\ drive ?

Whilst surfing, I discovered a simple freeware program called "Drive Icon Changer" so I downloaded this program and tried to use it. It is very easy to use, but, try as I might, I cannot get this programme to interact with my K;\ drive ? . . so I've given up and uninstalled that programme, as, in this instance at least, it clearly does not do what it is supposed to be able to do.

I also saw some advice about going to a DOS prompt (I do not understand what this means or how to do it?) and deleting or editing something called the autorun.inf file - I suspect this type of action would be well beyond my understanding and I'd probably do more harm than good if I attempted to edit this sort of system file and got it wrong !

I've also done a system restore - to a back up point of a couple of days ... Read more

Answer:How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Also just spotted an obsolete thread on this site where someone suggested:-

"Un-install the driver while the external drive is connected and then rebooted and let windows reinstall - everything should go back to normal when Windows re-discovered the drive".

I don't know if this might cure my problem ? . . but unfortunately I do not know how to uninstall a driver ?

Answer:trouble installing seagate barracuda hd 250gb sata with pci controller

That's not necessarily an error message..

Can you see anything that would show the controller recognising the attahced Seagate? Do you see the drive in Windows?

I have an external Seagate Drive that shows up in my Windows 10 desktop Device Manager under Disk Drives as "Seagate Desktop USB Device" and it states "Working Correctly" but it doesn't show as a drive in Explorer/MyPC.
I can feel vibrations suggesting the drive is alive and the drive light is on but I can't get to it.
Have tried different USB connections without change. Have tried uninstalling and rebooting without change.
Any ideas ?

Answer:Can't access my external Seagate Drive

Go into disk management, if it the drive does not have a letter assigned to it right click on the drive and select change drive letter and path to assign a drive letter.

I have a Seagate external drive that I save my backups to. I run my backup around midnight, when the computer has not been used for a good 5-6 hours. I have been getting errors with the backup that the drive has not been accessible and thus the backup is not successful.

When I double click on the drive icon in This PC , is takes about 20 seconds for the green bar to scroll across the top of the dialog box before I can see the full contents of the drive. The old Seagate software used to allow me to adjust the properties of the drives to make sure the drives stay awake at all times. As has been posted elsewhere, Seagate has not updated its software to be compatible with W10.

So my question is are there any other ways to make sure the external drive remains accessible after not being used for a while? Thanks for any thoughts.

I purchased a Seagate 1Tb external drive that came with "Seagate Dashboard" software to manage back-ups. What I would like to do is create 2 500Gb partitions and use my Acronis software to make mirror images of both my desktop and laptop. Is this do-able? Would it be advisable to delete the "Seagate Dashboard"?

Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Format Seagate external drive

Simply just plug it in and do a format. It took you longer to ask how to do this, than it would to have just plugged the drive in and right click on it after it loads in Windows Explorer, and choose "Format".

Hello,
When attempting to back up files to my new external drive, the drive was not recognized by my computer. After reading other threads, I was able to assign a drive letter via disk management and run a backup. My question is, do I need to go thru this exercise EVERY time I plug in the external drive via the USB? Is there a way to make the drive map permanent? I had to do this again today to see the external drive with a drive letter via Start menu /Computer

Answer:Seagate 2TB external drive not recognized

When you buy a brand new drive from the shelf, there is no partition or partition letter on the drive. That you have to assign once and it will be good for the life of the drive (unless you change it later).

I got a Seagate 1.5TB external yesterday. As soon as it was plugged into the outlet, the drive turned on, which was when I noticed it didn't have any kind of power switch, unlike the Iomega 500GB drive I've been using.

So I backed up my files and everything, no problems. I went to "Safely Remove Hardware" and it said it was fine to remove, so I did. Then with no power switch and no instructions in the box about this, I just unplugged the drive from the outlet.

When I went to back some new stuff up this morning, Vista asked me if I wanted to scan the drive for errors, like I'd yanked it out of the USB or something.

I'm worried about this. Is there some other way to turn the drive off and on without disconnecting it from a power source? Am I fine as long as I just use "Safely Remove Hardware"? Or should I just leave this thing on and plugged in 24/7?

Answer:Question about Seagate 1.5TB External Drive

Doing some searching, I found that other people have had the same problem (with turning it off). It seems like there is no way to turn if off (the comments here from other people state the same thing as you: Customer Reviews Of Seagate FreeAgent Desk ST315005FDA2E1-RK 1.5TB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 Silver External Hard Drive - Retail ). When you plug it back in and take a look at your files, are they corrupted in any way?

With the new pc if I leave Seagate connected I can't boot up - the screen stops at BIOS. Everything seems to be running properly as long as I don't keep the external hard drive connected until boot up is complete.
What can I do so that I don't have to keep disconnecting Seagate each time I shut down?

Hope someone can help and that the solution is an easy one. Thanks.

I use a 1 TB Seagate drive for my backups and it has been clicking lately.  Less than a year old but I do a full system backup once a week which is 320 GB.  The backup failed Fri or better said, I unplugged it due to the somewhat noisy clicks after running too many hours.  Having been around computers for a while I am pretty sure this can't be good! Thoughts?

Answer:Seagate external drive clicking

Drives can fail at any time. Most fail after a longer time than less than 1 year, but there is no guarantee (there is a Seagate warranty). You have two symptoms suggestive of drive failure: an unusual noise (clicking), and a failed backup. You could consult the help at Seagate.com,  for example:Identifying and troubleshooting hard drive noise issueshttp://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/174571en?language=en_USAlso find your drive on this page and navigate to the appropriate diagnostic tool download:http://knowledge.seagate.com/services-software/apps

I have an Asus eee 4gb surf I am just getting to know. It runs Linux. I bought a 60gb 2.0 Seagate portable drive that I wish to connect to it. I checked the drive on my Vaio with XP, and it seems to be fine. The eee doesn't detect it, and doesn't have all sorts of nice places for me to go to find new hardware etc- I assume that I need to download a driver- however Seagate doesn't appear to support Linux. Users on the Linux and eee forums I checked previously seem to be happily running their seagates. I tried doing a search and just don't have the heart or time to plow through thousands of web pages trying to find an answer- anyone here know? I would sure prefer not to have to load XP on the eee (god, that almost SINGS, doesn't it?) Looking forward to learning this from you all!
Thanks! kat:confused

Answer:Run Seagate external drive with eee Linux?

Cancel this ladies and gents- it's become a totally different problem- the drive I bought, on Ebay is a Momentus internal drive mounted by the third party vendor in an external case- I spoke w/Seagate, took the drive out- there is no life. Seagate is not surprised, and I'm sure you won't be either- definitely a DOA. So, the upshot is, I tried for a quick fix, when if I had just waited for payday, for 30 dollars more, I could have bought (and will buy) the portable drive, at MUCH HIGHER GB that is made to do the job- marry in haste, repent at leisure.

OK, So i have an 1.5 External seagate drive that up until now has been running great, the main thing i keep on it is media which i access through a USB 2 connection. as of 2 days ago the drive has been acting funny in the middle of a playback it starts seeking or searching which is the best way that i can describe this. basically the media locks for a second the drive clicks like its searching and then the media restarts a few seconds later. The audio generally keeps going but the video hags during this time. I ran SEAtools looking for drive errors, defraged it, and ran a virus check on the drive to see if maybe i picked up a bug, nothing, i have also updated all my video and audio drivers, and by the time you read this probably the drives drivers also.

Any Ideas?

I updated to Windows 8.1 a couple of days ago on my desktop. Windows 8 was installed last June. I have a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex external drive connected to the computer for daily backups. Since upgrading to 8.1, this drive has been shutting itself off and then restarting at seeming random times. This event is accompanied by a soft buzz apparently coming from the desktop tower.

Anyone having similar experience? There are identical comments on Seagate's forum now but no answers.

Thanks,
Seattlerust

Answer:Seagate External drive shutting itself off in Win 8.1

Do you have any power settings for USB devices set in your Advanced Power Settings... Try shutting off the USB selective suspend setting.

There is also a setting for Hard Drives, you can put them on a timer. You might want to check yours, see if it is set to a low value, if it is, increase it to 30 minutes or so.

I thought GoFlex drives connected through Wifi?

Besides that it wont read some of the files so i have to skip them

I have even tried recovery programs and all of them recognized the drive properly but couldnt recover anything. Okay, hey guy, here is my problem.

I've had this drive for a little while now, worked flawlessly for ages. I put movies and stuff on it and then watch it on my Xbox, I had about 30GB worth of data on it.

Now, what I want to do is: Format/reset the drive BACK to FAT32, it is currently in the "RAW" state. I have NO idea how this happened, I havent dropped it or anything it literally happened overnight. Have tried formatting at least 6 times, it always says "Format could not complete".

When I try to open it in my computer it just says "H: is not accesible, the parameter is incorrect". Have tried deleting the voume in disk management, that doesn't work either. Tried formatting through CMD, doesnt work.

I'm lost for ideas. Is my drive just screwed? I'm not bothered about getting the data back, I just want it to work again so I can get it back to FAT32 format.

Many thanks.

It sounds like the external harddrive has died - do you have copies of the files on your computer as well?

Assuming the drive is dead and it is not an issue with the USB connection, it is possible to get the files off of the harddrive though companies that provide such services often charge a high price.

I'm having trouble getting Windows 7 x86 RC Build 7100 to recognize my Seagate 3.5" External Hard Drive 500GB (Model ST305004EXA101-RK). It is connected through a USB 2.0 port on my Asus K8V SE Motherboard - running an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM.

Currently, this hard drive when connected appears in Device and Printers as as "Device" named Desktop. Right Click -> Properties shows that it is a storage device.

Device Manager recognizes it as a Disk Drive and calls it a Seagate Desktop USB Device - no conflicts.

Under Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management the drive appears as Disk 1 - Basic and Online statuses. If I try and assign it a drive letter, I get the following "The operation failed to complete becasue the Disk Managment Console view is out of date. Please refresh the console view..."

Only one conflict exists in Device Manager - I have one Unknown Device under USB Controllers. When viewing that device, it gives me a Code 43 error.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hi all
I have a 500GB external Seagate HD. When connected to my pc yesterday however it was not recognised anywhere, not showing in dvices and drives, in disk management or even in the bios. It was fine the last time I connected it and it actually starts up although makes a clicking sound for about twenty seconds.
I took it out of the housing and connected it directly but still no sign. Have tried different USB ports and I have used various online tools including Seagates own tool but nothing sees it.
Any ideas at all as I have never had a drive not recognised anywhere before?

Do you have another PC you can connect it to? The clicking noise sounds rather worrying, and I'd suspect the drive has developed a fault.

I want to play safe and have an image to save my sanity if I my computer burns up etc. I have a Seagate external drive. What are the files that make up an image? What do I save? Should this be continuous or just once? If it is just once can take the drive out and not loose the data? How do I get into the new pc?

this is a follow up to my post:

After the above post I learned about diskwizard. Is this a separate software or did I get this when I bought the seagate harddrive?

Answer:save image to seagate external drive

An image or clone saves Everything on the computer. So, if you have to put a new hard drive into the computer, an image will write to the new hard drive exactly what was on the old hard drive.

A backup takes some of your files and "backs them up" to another location.

This is what Seagate says:
DiscWizard
The software lets you quickly install your new disc drive with wizards that guide you through the processes of creating and formatting partitions on your disc drive, transferring data, and backing up your data.
Please note this is not for imaging/cloning.

I image my four Windows 7 computers once a month. (I have 5 external hard drives and I rotate between them so that if one of the externals dies, I will still have images).

We save very little data on our computers. We are in the habit of storing daily files on USB sticks. If the data is really important, like pictures, I burn to a CD and store on a USB stick or sd card. So doing backups isn't necessary for the way we handle our data.

To image, you would either use a free or paid program.

Here's an article that will explain better than I did.

The drive is showing up under my computer, but only as a local disk, not as an expansion drive as it did before the drive also shows up under my device manager, but, once again if I try to do anything my computer will lock up. Whenever I try to access it, my computer will lock up. When shutting down my computer it will continue to stay on the windows is shutting down screen until I unplug the drive from the USB. It is not emitting any funny noises. I am not sure what to do; there is too much information on the drive for my computer to hold if I tried to do a data recovery. Now when i plug it into any usb port, the 'autoplay' pops up and continues to search and not find any files except the first folder and cannot find any files. Even when i click cancel it will say 'cancelling' but will not stop till i unplug it.
As soon as i unplug it the action box pops up with some weird icons beside the usual headings.
Also I can plug the HD into my tv and access the files, fine.
If someone can please help me i would be forever greatful as my lifes music library is hiding in there and i shrivell up and die without my beats? Please help, please:confused

Answer:External Seagate Hard Drive not responding

HI

Its possible that the USB drive lette or recognition is amiss with Windows, this can happen when the portable device is plugged into other devices. So best 1st test is to delete the USB driver reference for this device on your PC and recreate.

To do this, open device manager and then the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch and then note the list, then plug in your device and not the change, it may say Mass Storage Device and right click and uninstall this device, then unplug and replug in your Ex HDD and the drive should reload the driver again and be accessable

I recently changed the power supply on my Seagate External HD after the previous one blew. I re-connected the HD to my PC and i get the following message ' One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it'
It now only shows as an Unknown device and does not show up at all. At first i thought the HD was faulty but i tried it on my works pc and it recognised it immediately and i had full access to the HD so i'm rather puzzled as to what has happened. Any help on this would be much appreciated

Answer:My Seagate External Hard Drive is not recognised

Was it connected to the PC when the Power Supply blew?
Does the USB connection, that it was using then, work with other devices?

Can not view my external usb hard drive. I have another usb drive installed without issue. The invisible drive appears to be "dead". Check with Voltage Meter and the power supply for the drive is working. Is there any way to recover the data? Luckily I have the data backed up on another drive.

OK, so about 3 weeks ago, I bought a 250gb Seagate External HDD. I plugged it in and it worked... last night, all of a sudden, it stopped working. I've tried plugging it into another PC, and nothing... it doesn't even find it. I've tried going to "Manage" and "Removable Storage" and it comes back saying "The service cannot be starter, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. This snapin's display may be inconsistent with the Removable Storage Service. If the problem persists please restart the snapin."

I'm assuming it's the external, because, like I said, I tried hooking it up to another PC and that PC can't find it either. HELP, I have EVERYTHING on this external, and I don't want to lose it. Could it be the USB cable? It's only 3 weeks old! (BTW, I have Windows XP)

External drive seems to work fine using it with Windows XP. However, when I try and load the BounceBack Express software, it begins to load and then when searching for the drives it "freezes up" and becomes "non-responding". I have it hooked up through the Firewire with the drive as a FAT32. Seems like if it works without the software, it isn't a hardware issue yet CMS tells me to hook it up through USB (which I haven't tried yet). Anyone have any solutions?

Hi I am just about to be treated to a new External desktop hard drive as a gift. I know there are cheaper drives but I have narrowed it down to the choice of a Seagate 640GB or 500GB Freeagent Xtreme or a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500GB. I want the USB AND Esata interface. The Seagate is about £30 dearer than the Western Digital but has a 5 year warranty and Firewire as well as USB and esata. Western digital has 3 year warranty. Can anybody give me any information to help me make the decision and decide whether the £30 extra is worthwhile. Thanks in advance.

Answer:HELP Seagate or Western Digital external drive ?

I have a Seagate OneTouch external hard drive (because I got the 400GB model at a very reasonable price at the time), but I've used Western Digital internal drives for many years. Both are excellent products and have proved spot on reliability wise.

I have successfully used Seagate Tool to scan my internal HD but it is not recognising my External Drive when I try to scan that. It appears as Sea Tools in Control Panel/Programmes and Features but not on Computer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services where I looked on suggestion from web. It appears I need some kind of MZXM (?) update but do not understand the process of getting this for Windows 7 and am concerned not to mess up my backup drive .

My concern began because Windows 7 keeps asking me to format the Backup Drive before doing my weekly backup. When I ignored it the backup appeared to go ahead any way but I don`t like ignoring mysterious
instructions unless I understand why they are there.

Can anyone please advise me ?

Answer:Seagate not recognising External Hard Drive

Sorry this is not a reply but further info to request for help. I have found the following on Seagate Tools Menus plus a long list of items which I will not quote unless requested to do so.

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. The system cannot find the file specified.

Most of the time when I plug in my seagate external 1tb hard drive, my computer won't find it. The external hard drive turns on and then turns itself off within a few seconds. I assume the hard drive is automatically turning itself off as if it is in sleep mode.

How can I prevent it from going in sleep mode? Will reformatting the hard drive help?

I have access to the hard drive as this problem does not occur everytime but just most of the time.

Answer:Solved: seagate external hard drive

Formatting the drive will not resolve this.

What is the exact model of Seagate drive you have?

I just got my laptop back from having the fan replaced and the data has been wiped. I thought this wouldn't be an issue because I'd made a backup using the Seagate dashboard program, but as it turns out, none of my programs will transfer over. I have my JPGs and other images, but all my games and software aren't working. In addition, the Seagate restore menu has an option to restore files to their original locations, but for some reason it's not working for me. I feel like in hindsight, I should have used the Windows 10 image backup (or whatever it's called, I don't recall), but it's too late for that :P Anyway, does anyone have advice on how I can fix it? I think my local computer store can do a data transfer, but I'm wondering if there's another way. Thanks.

Answer:Restoring Windows 10 PC from Seagate External Drive

That's sad news - I would challenge your repairer why the data was wiped for a simple fan repair since there is no reason for this. Indeed, I would demand compensation since you have a lot of work to recover from this situation (see below)

I found the Dashboard guide here https://www.seagate.com/files/www-co...r-guide-us.pdf

Unfortunately, Dashboard is useless for system recovery since it doesn't backup your OS system files.

You will need to clean install Windows from scratch if you have no other system backup - see Windows 10 - Clean Install. You will then need to reinstall all your programs and restore your user files from Dashboard. Your data may be lost sadly if this doesn't work and you have no other backup.

In future I recommend you use a disk imaging program to backup your OS system files and user data like the excellent program Macrium Reflect Free. Use this to make regular backups to your external drive and preferably a second external drive so you have two backup drives in case one fails. I wouldn't bother with Dashboard since Reflect is far more capable.

Went through my worst week ever with Windows since I built my 1st PC in the Win 3.11 days. For a week almost I was restoring and re-restoring various Win 10 Acronis tibs because my system kept locking up with the little circle spinning at start up or shut down...pretty much all the time

Finally (thank goodness) I found that if I removed my Seagate USB Backup Plus external USB drive cord...everything was back to normal. Problem is I have a lot of stuff on this external USB drive including most recent Acronis backups and Windows files backups and Windows image backup.

I'm back up and running....but....I still can't access this external USB drive....and I occasionally have to unplug the USB connection to get things going at shut down or startup. Wired thing is Windows is finding the drive...I just can't access it (JPEG's attached)

Note: In one pic...when I try to populate the drive I just get the never ending circle again...and initially the drive was showing up as Drive I...not Seagate....etc

Any USB experts that can help me get back into the problem drive so I can copy all that good stuff to another HDD or external drive ?

Thanks....TiminAz

Drive: Seagate External Hard Drive 1TB
Separate Lock software bought, $45: Lockngo.exe - Keynesis Pro.
OS: Vista

Yesterday morning I used my External Hard Drive (trough lockngo.exe)
for around 2 hours without any problems.

After finishing, I locked the external hard drive.

12-13 hours later when I arrived home, I finished doing some school
work and tried to access the external hard drive to make a back up of
the file.

I double clicked on lockngo.exe and typed in the password, it then
displayed "Unlocking..." as usual but then another window popped
saying:

"F:\ is not accessible .

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

Funny thing is, I then went to "Computer Management" and under "Disk
Drives" it showed my external hard drive under Disk drives:
"Seagate FreeAgent USB Device".

I then right clicked it, went to Properties and it said "This device
is working properly.".

I installed the extra SeaGate manage software, did a few error checks
etc and said that the external hard drive is working fine.

After that, I went to "Disk Management" and it showed:

Volume - Layout - Tupe - File System - Status

( F: ) - Simple - Basic - RAW - Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)

What concerns me is the "RAW" part... what does it mean? Anything bad
or is it just normal? Since I thought it's meant to say "NTFS"?

So in the end I've got a HIGH feeling that the external hard d... Read more

&

When the hard drive is, well was, working fine, when the driver is locked, it only shows the lockngo.exe.

But ofcourse, this locking program is so damn good that it even hides my "Xuquan" folder that contains like 170GB worth of data which only shows via the lockngo.exe program.

Once the password has been entered correctly, the folder "Xuquan" then shows.

I have a 250 Gb Seagate external harddrive.

I've transferred all my comedy cassettes to Mp3 and put them all onto the drive.

When I turned the drive on today it gave out all sorts of clicking noises and the drive light goes on and off.It sounds very unhealthy.

Most of the time the drive doesn't show at all in 'my computer' but occasionally the noises stop and the drive settles down and it appears with a different drive letter to what it was before. When I click on the drive a get a message 'drive I is not formatted - do you want to format ?Y/N?'

Now I accept the drive is broken and fairly cheap these days to replace but have I lost all my valuable recordings? I know everyone says you should always back stuff up but it's always something you're going to do tomorrow !!!

Is there any way I can retreive my stuff to put onto a new drive (and back up) ??

Thanks

External Hard Drive Not Showing Up in Windows or OS X?

Hi all: Brand new Freeagent USB 1TB drive for Windows Home Premium on an ACER desktop.

After installing the Seagate Manager software, it tells me that I need a 32-bit OS and will not install.

The result is that there is a letter assigned to the drive but no hard drive icon. And the drive just stops working after a while. Unplugging it and plugging it back in makes it work again. Then my files vanish and it dies again. And so forth.

In post after post on this forum and others I've seen about this issue, everyone seems to offer a lot of assurances that external drives will work automatically on 64-bit.

But they don't.

From the Seagate website in the downloads section:

FreeAgent Family Software
File Version: FreeAgentCN.EXE
File Size for Windows.EXE: 63 MB
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, Windows XP Home, XP Professional, XP Media Center Edition
32-bit Operating Systems ONLY

So should I get a new drive designed for this OS, and if so, which ones are they?

Uninstall these 32bit drivers and reboot. Plug in the usb or esata from the external device and let Vista first install all the necessary drivers for the device. It might take a couple minutes but later the C: will acknowledge the changes. You should use the safely remove hardware device for unplugging as continuous random unplugging might damage the interface of the hard drive. ... Read more
