Preferred Solution: cannot go into BUFFALO External HDD(window 7)..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My external is 2 500g hard drives and is preset for FAT32

I want to be able to put files bigger than 4gs on it, so I have to change it to NTFS, right?

The wall I run into is . . . I will be buying a Macbook Pro in a few weeks and I want to be able to use the HD between the two. From what I read it looks like I could do that with FAT32, but not with NTFS.

I want to know the best thing to do so I don't have to reformat my drive later and have this all be a toilet flush.

I really want to prepare for my mac.

Thanks in advance.

I recently bought a BUFFALO  External  USB  DVD  RW ;  I am unable to use it with my COMPAQ  MINI  110-1100 DX LAPTOP  Product  Number : VM146UA#ABA . My mini Laptop does not have an inbuilt DVD RW. Will  somebody please guide about as to how to use this External DVD to install any software CD on to my Laptop ? Also, how to see & listen to a DVD using this DVD RW ? Can I use this DVD RW with my Desk-Top PC also ? Please guide in details and help me. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:BUFFALO External USB DVD RW

What is the model of your Buffalo DVD-RW drive? Your laptop should automatically detect the drive when you plug it in via USB. Your drive will definitely work with your desktop, too.In the rare case that drivers need to be installed for your DVD drive, you would want to go to the official Buffalo site to download them.

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

Answer:Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

Hi allfamily member purchased one of these and proceeded to install it without reading any documentation. 2 basic questions I need help with:1. Theyre running XP pro but chose the FAT32 option to format the drive during install. Main PC is NTFS. Will this causae any problems?2. Assuming the answer to q1 is no - the drive has install files, log files, and folders all over the place on it. Once installed and back up is running is it safe to either tidy these files into one folder and leave them on the external drive, or take them off the drive to increase space, and keep them on main PC?Hope that all makes sense.ThanksSi67

Hello. I've been having problems with the above drive (similar to this previous thread). I've had the drive for about a year & a half. It worked fine (on Win XP Home) up until a few days ago, when I connected it to my new laptop (Win 7).

On connecting, a warning message came up saying that Windows had detected disk errors - did I want to scan it? I said Yes, it completed the scan (no errors), but I couldn't access any of the files in Windows Explorer. I Safely Removed USB Hardware and tried again, but said No to the error scan ("Are you sure, some files may be corrupted?"). On continuing, I could see all my files.

I then selected Windows Scandisk, and once the scan completed the HDD was very slow to select. It didn't show any of my files again, and showed the following error messages whenever I tried to access it:

Do NOT format it - that will result in you losing your files.

Use the Partition Wizard partition recovery software to try and recover the partition to another disk.

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.
And i connected it on my Windows 7 laptop, sa... Read more

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Answer:Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

I have a 500GB Buffalo external hard drive that I use for music, pictures and misc backed up documents. The problem is, I seem to be missing a few GB's.

The HD shows:
173 GB of music
2 GB of pictures
5 GB of documents
180 total should be listed....

.... but instead it tells me that 446 GB are being used and the HD is nearly full! For the life of me, I can't figure where all this "extra stuff" is located. Why would my HD be saying it's so full, but I can't find anything else on it?

I did a disk cleanup on the HD, then I did a Windows defrag on it... and it still shows 446 GB being used in total.

Any ideas?

Answer:Buffalo 500GB External HD -- missing space?

You could backup all the stuff do your desktop and reformat it but that would take some time copying over 180gb of date.

Format will remove all data on that drive.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

Just a generic question...
Does anyone know if the Buffalo WLA2-G54C is compatible with non Buffalo wireless routers? I have a Dlink router (don't know the model off the top of my head) with various brands of client adaptors. I've heard good things about the WLA2-G54C for the repeater function.
I ask this because of this statement on their website:
Repeater/Bridge function of the WLA2-G54C is supported only with Buffalo bridges and routers. But, the device can communicate with other manufacturer's 802.11b and 802.11g client adapters either in bridge/repeat mode or as a stand alone access point.
Does this mean that it simply won't work with other brand routers or that they just won't support it. I would think the latter but was curious if anyone had any experience with it.

Answer:Solved: Buffalo WLA2-G54C compatible with non Buffalo router?

Eh, never mind. I just went ahead and bought a D-Link DWL-G710 Wireless 802.11g 54 Mbps Range Extender.

I recently purchased a Buffalo 2tb usb3 external drive and a icy box usb3 pci card. But it will not let me mount anything that is usb3.In small print on the Buffalo Manaul which I downloaded from their site, it states:'* A USB3.0 interface manufactured by Buffalo is required to use this drive at SS mode specified by USB 3.0 standard (logical transfer speed 5.0Gbps).'Surely they can't expect us to buy the Buffalo usb3 pci just to get this drive to work! I want to "freeze" this window if the system goes to sleep I want it to awaken to this arrangement not stack all the windows on the laptop monitor, also when I close the laptop, I want to keep the same four windows open on the external and not have the window #5 jump over to the external monitor, and then when I open the laptop I want it to look like it did when I closed it, not having all the open windows jump back to the laptop monitor. Can I do this?

I recently got an external hard-drive from Western Digital (250GB Elements, Model #WD2500C035). I could not get my PC nor my Mac to recognize my Hard-drive even though it had recognized it before.

The following is what happened:
1. I first connect it with my PC and transferred all my files from my PC to the WD hard-drive.
2. Then I connect a second hard-drive to my PC and transferred some files from my second hard-drive to the WD hard-drive.
3. After that, I took my WD hard-drive and connect it to my MAC. I transfer some files from my Mac onto the WD hard-drive.
4. Then I turned off the Computers for the night.
5. This morning when I turned on the computers and reconnect the WD hard-drive to my MAC. My Mac did not recognize it.
6. I disconnected my WD hard-drive from my mac, and connect it with my PC, and again the PC does not recognize my WD hard-drive.
7. I double checked the "Device Manager" and still could not find my WD hard-drive in the "Disk drives"

I transferred several important files into the Hard-drive and did not leave any back-ups. So I was hoping if someone could help me to retrieve those files from the Hard-drive.

my PC is a WinBook operating with Windows XP
my Mac is a Macbook Pro operating on Mac OS X version 10.4.10

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Window will not recognize my External Hard drive after I use it on Mac

You used both Windows and OSX to write to a hard drive?

Unless you did some partitioning on that hard drive, thats bad.

See, there are multiple types of file system types, such as NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, FAT, ext3, ext2, etc.

Windows XP, by default, uses NTFS. I suspect that when you used your PC to write to the hard drive, Windows turned the whole thing into a NTFS hard drive.

I don't know what file type OS X uses, but I do not think it uses NTFS. It probably uses something similar to ext3, which is what my Linux distro (openSUSE 10.2) uses. When OSX tried to write to it, it probably messed something up badly because it was using a different file system.

I think that is what happened. I am not sure, though. My answer definitely isn't spot-on with what happened.

Answer:Cannot set external monitor as main window on T500

Vista has caused us grief on this score and we've never seen a good answer on why.The good news is the Thinkpad Presentation Director utility- just fire that up and step through the Wizard. It will let you configure your monitors however you like and save it as a profile. In most situations that configuration will hold when you redock, but worst case is you just select the profile from the PD icon in the taskbar (or set the checkbox to automatically apply it whenever the notebook is docked).I would emphasize though that we mostly DON'T have to do those latter options- the big win is the capability to set the Primary monitor which for whatever reason Microsoft has grayed out in the regular controls.Best,Kevin P.S. If you really don't want to see the four screen setup and you are not going to use Switchable graphics in the BIOS you can set Display to Discrete Graphics (only) rather than Switchable. You will still likely need PD to set the Primary/Main.P.P.S You should also be able to do this through the ATI Catalyst Control Center, though in some cases that makes you jump through more hoops than the PD Wizard.

I accidentally downloaded windows10 OS to my 1TB external hard drive, it formatted my hard drive and deleted all my important data.
I have been reading some old thread related to this subject. follow as suggested to used MiniTool to scan the hard drive. the result came out with following. it didn't find missing partition therefore I didn't proceed to select partition then apply to recover.

ESD-USB (F 32.00 GB FAT 32
unallocated 400+GB

does it mean that all my data is gone since there is no missing partition found?

I am running scan with MiniTool Power Data Recover tool as recommended from MiniTool Partition Wizard free. it will take about another 13 hrs to complete the scan.
any suggestions/input are appreciated

Answer:how to recover external hard drive from window 10

I use Recuva, it might help you.

It is very important that you do not try any partitioning or file saving or anything until after you recover as many files as you can. Also, this is a very important lesson having back ups of all of your personal data.

Hi There,

I have to work with high mobility in different locations. Instead of carrying my laptop with me, I am now experimenting to use the portable applications like firefox. My solution is to put those portable applications and other frequently use files in an external 40G hard disk. And I plug in the external HDD to the computer facility I have access to.

Still there are many window applications like Dreamweaver and other window version applications I would like to use wherever I want.

Is there any solution outside there I can access to these window applications in my external HDD? Any OS I can install on my external HDD such that I can install my window applications on it and I can carry it with me all the time?

And I have difficulty to keep update my data in my home computer and my external HDD unless I sync the data on a daily basis. If I centralize the data in my home computer, how can I access them via internet seamlessly?

I am getting crazy, pls help!

I had a stubborn empty folder on an external HD that would not delete.
Windows alert "cannot delete <folder name> because there is a file open in the folder " (words to that effect)
Stubborn folder was empty (I checked for very hidden files and folders)

Unlocker (3rd party program) would not delete it. (As administrator)

Sometimes changing the folder name will resolve a stubborn folder's deletion, but I found a YouTube tutorial Remove stubborn files or folders from your Windows system which demonstrated using the CMD window. I just had to try it !

As administrator (cmd window) I could not change to the final parent folder of the sticky-folder to create the list of 8.39 files.
The parent folder has a space and brackets "()" in it.

I was trying to remove the Tools folder in an external HD F:\FolderA\FolderB\Folder (gnc)\Tools
When I tried to change-directory from ...
C:\Windows\system32 ... to ... F:\FolderA\FolderB\Folder (gnc)
... result remained as "C:\Windows\system32"
With the space in the "Folder (gnc)" ... I tried wrapping the F-drive path in quotes (x1, x2 x3)

But always resulted in the default "C:\Windows\system32>"

C:\Windows\system32>cd F:\FolderA\FolderB\Folder (gnc)
C:\Windows\system32>cd "F:\FolderA\FolderB\Folder (gnc)"
C:\Windows\system32>cd ""F:\FolderA\FolderB\Folder (gnc)""

Answer:Remove stubborn folder, on external drive, using cmd window

Here is the syntax of the CD command:

Displays the name of or changes the current directory.

CHDIR [/D] [drive:][path]
CHDIR [..]
CD [/D] [drive:][path]
CD [..]

.. Specifies that you want to change to the parent directory.

Type CD drive: to display the current directory in the specified drive.
Type CD without parameters to display the current drive and directory.

Use the /D switch to change current drive in addition to changing current
directory for a drive.

If Command Extensions are enabled CHDIR changes as follows:

The current directory string is converted to use the same case as
the on disk names. So CD C:\TEMP would actually set the current
directory to C:\Temp if that is the case on disk.

CHDIR command does not treat spaces as delimiters, so it is possible to
CD into a subdirectory name that contains a space without surrounding
the name with quotes. For example:

cd \winnt\profiles\username\programs\start menu

is the same as:

cd "\winnt\profiles\username\programs\start menu"

which is what you would have to type if extensions were disabled.
I believe you needed to add the argument /D in order for it to have worked. If there are spaces, you also need to enclose them with quotes.

So in your case, the command would have been:

CD /D "F:\FolderA\FolderB\Folder (gnc)\Tools"
Some suggestions that I can give if you ever find yourself in a similar situation again.

I have the Yoga 11s which I've been using in conjunction with a Plugable UD-3900 for a few weeks now. Everything has worked very well, especially with external display, keyboard, mouse, and ethernet plugged into the hub. After upgrading to 8.1 the other day, I began getting very noticeable window and mouse lag on the external monitor. Dragging windows would jump around, aero peek renders were slow, and the 'ribbon' screen saver would pixelate and was slow to wake up. I installed the updated DisplayLink drivers, and also all the updated Lenovo drivers, but the problem remained. This morning I was trying different ideas and found something very interesting: The configuration I use when attached to the UD-3900 is to have the keyboard flipped under and the display flipped up in the "stand" so I can use it as a second monitor. Of course when you do that, the Yoga turns off the keyboard & touchpad so they don't get accidentally pressed.Just for kicks, I decided to flip the keyboard back around and try using the touchpad to move windows around on the extended monitor. Surprise: the laggy window dragging and rendering was gone. And then even more surprising, when going back to the wireless mouse while still in 'laptop' configuration, everything continued to work well -- no lag.I thought maybe it was an incompatibility with the Logitech wireless USB keyboard/mouse itself, so I disconnected it. However, I also have a bluetooth Microsoft ... Read more

No other problems are evident (Conflicts etc). A Code 1 is also displayed in the PROPERTIES windowI have tried all the advice given at the IOMEGA internet site for this problem but nothing seems to work.I think I have established (may be?) that the driver required is a microsoft driver called USBSTOR.SYS. When I first looked in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS this file was NOT present. I therefore extracted this file from C:\WINDOWS\I386\SP1.CAB to the DRIVERS folder still no joy - it could still not find the driver.I then added this file to a floppy to see if the system would detect the driver still no joy. Also tried inserting the original SP1 Windows disk - no luck.NOTE The USB chip set is made by VIA. I have also downloaded the latest USB drivers using Usoft Update facility.I know the External Hard Drive is OK as I have connected it to both a Windows XP m/c and another running ME.I have another USB device attached to another port & that is OK (Also disconnected this in case there was some kind of conflict).Any help would be much appreciated!

Answer:Window USB port connected to an External Hard Disk

You have probably already tried this, but try all the combinations of jumper settings on the hard drive, master/slave/csel/no jumpers.Have the computer restart rather than plug when switched on. Have a look in the disk management tools when the computer is booted, it is not uncommon for a drive to be seen in disk mangement and not be seen in windows explorer. Also where are you getting the power for the cradle, is it self powered, a powered hub, direct from the usb port.Just a few things for you have a look at, hope this helps.

Just got a new Asus Zenbook UX31E and am having a certain problem where if I plug my external drive (Samsung S2 1TB, USB 3.0, 2.5") into the 3.0 port windows tries to install a driver for the new device but fails. Now the drive powers on when connected but wont load up as an accessible drive and is not found is disc management.

I've tried the HDD successfully in another laptop with USB 3.0 and it works fine on my Zenbook's USB 2.0 port so I'm guessing there's no problem with the HDD itself. Also I have tried a small flash drive in the Zenbook's 3.0 port which worked fine.

I have tried updating the USB 3.0 driver to the latest version via Asus' driver database but have got the same result.

I would of thought with such a prestigious laptop someone else would of run across this problem but all my googling has turned up ziltch.

Any ideas/suggestions much appreciated!

Hello there, I need help, this is driving me nuts!
This is the first time I have had to actually ask a question as generally some one else already has had the same problem so I guess what I am dealing with this time is good one.
Since a month or so ago, every time I drag a file out of my external Hard Drive to any destination (even the tree file on the left), the entire desktop blacks out for a second or two. Then the window from the HD closes and everything else remains open (the drag and drop is not saved of course).
Any thought on why this might be happening?
More details:
Windows 7 64bit
Acer PC
WD Hard Drive (USB3)
Port USB2

Answer:Entire desktop goes black, when I drag a file out of external HD window

Have you tried the external on another system or another external on the one in question?
What happens if you try a flash drive instead of the external?
One of the first things I'd do is a system restore to before the issue started.

I have a new Dell XPS420 quad core processor running Windows Vista Premium Home edition. I have my old hard drive in an external case and at times when I try to open files on the external hard drive I am not able to. It says I do not have permission. I tried turning off User Account Control on the new desktop and then tried to access the external hard drive files, but I still received the same message, that I do not have control and it was denied.

Is there any way to gain permanent control over that external hard drive? I was the only user of that that was housed on my Compaq Presario 5430US that ran Windows XP Home edition.

This router is causing me some grief with the wireless setup, as although I'm getting a respectable signal strength, the internet just keeps dropping out for some reason. I'm hoping the firmware upgrade will help.

Just bought the buffalo wzr-600dhp router using dd-wrt open source software.

I needed a router I could control bandwidth with with a good QOS feature pack.
QOS kinda works out of the box on this router but setting limits by IP or MAC seems broken.
Cap only works by setting the uplink speed and that is what it stops at.
Just wondering if anyone else has this router and has gotted QOS to work properly?

Also had a hell of a time getting it to work with my isp and DNS apparently these 3 boxes under setup had to be unchecked to get things to work.

Well I'm getting some strange results...Especially since my old Netgear Bridge is pretty much broken (it won't connect to anything).

First Test I did was Placed the Buffalo router in place of my netgear Router and checked the signal on my wireless USB dongle. It stayed the same. I proceeded to Boost the Signal in DD-WRT using Xmit Power I boosted it from 28 to 100, the signal to the card did not budge...So much for having High signal strength compared to my 3 year old wireless G netgear, or this hack to increase the signal. So far, wasted money.

Now Since my bridge (netgear could still not connect (it can only detect networks, but not connect to them as of last weekend wtf!) It was time to put the router back in place and try the Buffalo as a Bridge.

I placed both routers next to each other; they are roughly 25-30 feet from my Main Router. I enabled the Client Bridge on the Buffalo MIMO Router.

Both Routers had about the same signal I'm getting about 48-60% at this range (Pretty terrible!) DD-WRT However also tells me the signal quality as well which is POOR about 35-39%

Next test was to scan for other local networks. The netgear is picking up all kinds of stuff, between 4 and 7 networks! Some of which appear to have a stronger signal than my own router not more than 30 feet away (say 35%, 40% 65% and 70-99%)
The Buffalo router only picks up 2-3 networks at a time, not always event he ones that are appearing as 99%, which also have str... Read more

I guess you installed SP2? I never saw any difference with SP2 set to more than 10mw. Only SP1 seems to register changes to the xmit. That's why I stuck with it despite some other improvements in SP2.

Once you get SP1 working, set it to 80mw-100mw and swap it with your landlord's router. Then put your older router back bridge mode. That should be the best combination if you just ordered one. Before you disconnect the landlord's router, be sure to login to release its DHCP connection.

Unfortunately, we're clean out of our WHR-HP-G54s and are looking for a comparable replacement.

We used to stock the Linksys WRT54G's but had some issues with them failing at client's and haven't been overly impressed.

The buffalo's have been rock solid, we've sold 100s of them without a single failure.

I don't mind going back to Linksys if that's the way to go, but I'm not afraid to try something different.

It needs to be able to handle DDWRT or Tomato and needs to cost less than $75 shipped as anything more expensive isn't marketable. I buy these in quantity so telling me to get an older version of WRT54G isn't going to happen.

I've got a Buffalo Linkstation 120, great bit of kit but with one annoyance, if it's powered off there appears to be no way to power it back up without actually pressing the button on the front.
It's currently situated in the loft so it's a bit inconvenient. I've tried several WOL programs but with no luck so far.

Any tips or workarounds would be gratefully received.

Answer:Buffalo Linkstation 120

I, too, have a Buffalo Linkstation 120. There is no mention of wake on LAN in the user manual, nor is there any mention of it in the FAQ section on Buffalo's web site. I cannot imagine that there is a way to accomplish it since wake on LAN is a feature that, on PC's, must be supported in the BIOS. If the Linkstation does not have that feature, I doubt it could be added.

Since the Linkstation is a network attached storage device running its own operating system, it's similar to a file server and can be kept running 24/7. I have had mine for over six months and I leave it on continuously so that all the PC's in my home have access to it.

Out of curiosity...why do turn it off? Or is it that you lose power and then must power it back on manually.

Hello Major Members,

I have a Buffalo NAS (LS-V2.0tl) that appears to be working via a shared drive, but doesn't seem to work as a bit torrent drive. It has a steady red continuous light on that I'm unable to fix. Originally, I would just play with the function key because it was blinking in intervals of three. The only thing that happened while playing with the function key is that it is now a steady red light.

Once upon a time, I remember that there was a software fix for this but have seen it since.

Any ideas or assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Morning,I've got the above wireless router which has worked well up until last sunday, I got round the problem and then it happened again on Tuesday. The problem im having is that the computer using the buffalo adapter is struggling to recquire a network address and my wireless laptop won't log on with the correct SSID and AES key.I've used AOSS to setup the network, which works really well. To get round the problem I was having I cancelled AOSS, unplugged everything and deleted any profiles for that connection, re-plugged in everything and started AOSS from the router and the buffalo adapter, this set up another secure wireless network automatically. This worked a treat for two days then it happened again.Does anybody know why this is happening or can help me stop it from happening. Its pretty easy to restart the AOSS, its just annoying that I need to keep doing it. Its stopping others in the house from using the net while im out or away as im the only 1 who knows what to do.My PC wired to the router works fine all the time so im guessing that the router is changing some wifi settings itself . Maybe I might be better binning AOSS and setting up the wireless side manually. Thanks for any help

So I ordered the Buffalo router recommended on the "help me pick a router" thread and am awaiting its arrival. I have been doing a little reading over at the DD-WRT site and also searched for the latest build for this router. The router itself is not listed. There is some talk about instabilities and shortcomings with the current DD-WRT builds on their forum.
My question is this. What version shall I upgrade to upon receiving the router? Or, should I just try it out with the factory installed DD-WRT and see what happens? What have you all done with this router?
Any feedback is appreciated. My plan is to get it set up quickly, minimizing down time as wife is minimally tolerant of that sort of thing! I don't want to hear any "It worked fine before, why did you need to upgrade?"

Answer:Buffalo WZR-HP-G450H

Well after looking at the site your best bet would be the most recent firmware released 4/03/12 from buffalo, as it does not appear that dd-wrt has any firmware on their site.
Here is the ftp, you can also find the link via the buffalo site here.

Good luck as from what I have read this is a very flaky with dd-wrt. I hope the issues have been resolved in the newest firmware.

Its obviously set up OK as it workd for about five minutes perfectly then gives up completely, I've changed the ip adress and thats about the only fine tuning I can find.Any Ideas anyone before I buy 15 metres of patch cable and do things the easy way?

Answer:Buffalo Airstation?

used to be that they came without an external aerial in the pack. I'm nbot sure if that's still the case, but it might be the cause of the problem.

Hello Everybody.
This is the problem i'm facing with a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 access point and a switch.
I wanna use the Buffalo as router. I'm connecting the Buffalo Wan port to the DSL modem and one of his lan ports to a PC. Everything is working fine and connection is up.

If i connect the second port of the Buffalo to a switch connected with 6 other PC, the link led on the Buffalo blinks (showing no correct connection) and the led on the switch doesn't light up.
Same thing happens if i connect the second port of the Buffalo directly to another PC network card. On the network card the link led doesn't light up and on the Buffalo the led blinks.

Which is the mistake ?

Thanks in advance for your help

Answer:buffalo hdd not detected by win-7

If there's nothing you want to keep on it, right click it in disk management and format it to NTFS.

If there is stuff to keep, look online for a partition repair utility.

I have a Buffalo Linkstation Quad with 4x 1TB disks in it, they are configured into 2x RAID 1 arrays of 1TB each, giving me a total of 2TB Storage.

My question is, is 2x RAID 1 arrays considered `safe` from a redundancy point of view?

I`m toying with the idea of a QNAP ts-419u+ -->>

I like the idea that it can use 2.5" and/or 3.5" drives, but there seems to be one thing missing.... some kind of torrent support.

Does anyone know of a nice NAS with upgradeable disks with decent performance that supports FTP, DLNA, BitTorrent, rack-mount would be nice, as would a web server but neither of these are deal-breakers/essential, oh, and support for a different RAID level (to be recommended here) RAID 5 maybe??

Many thanks

Answer:Buffalo NAS (I know, I know) and RAID 1

419 supports torrents?

Features - - supports RAID 5...this seems to be what you want..

Download Station & QGet
QNAP NAS features Download Station for high-speed BitTorrent, HTTP (including RapidShare support), and FTP download without PC. RSS download (broadcatching) is also supported for automatic BitTorrent download. QGet is a powerful utility which can be installed on any Windows or Mac computers to manage the download tasks of multiple Turbo NAS servers remotely (LAN/WAN).Click to expand...

I wouldn't use a torrent engine from a NAS. Personally.

Is this for a home? If so,

Edit: Comments on raid levels:

I prefer RAID 5 for most file/application use.

Hi, Hope this is in the right section.....

Ive got a Teraststaion which is up and running in the office on two computers (one Mac and One PC) as well as a laptop. We want to be able to take the laptop to other place (e.g. bosses address) and still connect to the TeraStation. Ive called BT who told me I needed to set up an FTP which they've done for me. But I still cant see the TeraStation on the laptop out of the office. Do I need a VPN (never done one of these before and not entirely sure how its different from an FTP) or do I need do so something with the settings on the TeraStation?

Sorry but I really think I need the idiots guide here as this is a bit more beyond me than I thought it would be!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Buffalo NAS TeraStation help set up

If you have been set up to connect to the Terastation via FTP while away from the office, then that is exactly what you need to do. You cannot 'see' the drive when you are away from the office. FTP requires either a dedicated public IP address or port forwarding done at the router to the Terastation. The easiest way to do this would be contact BT and have them tell you how to connect to it, then use an FTP client like Filezilla or WinSCP, Realistically, both FTP and VPN require advanced networking to setup properly. Are you sure your Terastation does not provide some kind of web service that you can use to connect to it remotely?

I have a Linksys router atm for my Virgin connection, but I'm moving soon and need a router/modem. I've read a rave review in a mag of the Buffalo WBMR-G125. I'm thinking about getting this, or the Linksys Wireless-G. Does anyone have experience of these routers? Many thanks.

Answer:Buffalo or Linksys?

I've had a Linksys WAG54GX2 connected to desktop by ethernet and matching wireless laptop card for about a year. Big house, some concrete walls - good signal. Bit of a pain to set up but works very well.

Hi, I have recently installed Windows 7 on an old Dell PC which works fine. The original OS being XP. It doesn't have a wireless card installed on it. I have a Buffalo Air Navigator Wireless G Usb Model WLI-U2-KG125S. I have had this working on older machines but I cannot install it on the Windows 7 PC. The disc which states Ver 9.2.2 starts to install then just hangs. I've left it running for hours while it says installing but halfway through it just stops loading. As soon as I pull the stick out it cancels. Is it compatible with Windows 7? If not are there other drivers that I can use? I have asked on Buffalo's forum but have had no reply's. Thank you for any assistance.

Answer:Buffalo Air Navigator

Well this might help, it is not quite the same model but you never know.

Or have a look above,

Have you tried Compatability Mode ??

Seems like it works fine in linux os's,

Don't you love networking?
So I have a Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11G wireless card for my laptop and I'm trying to get it to work with my router, which has WPA enabled. I guess this card doesn't support WPA, however, I read something about a WPA supplicant and couldn't figure out exactly what it is or how to use it. Can anyone help me?
Thank you!

Answer:WPA with Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11G

Some old adapters don't support WPA, but many do with a driver update. Do you have the latest driver for the adapter?

I have a brand new Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 that just came from newegg. I'm trying to get dd-wrt onto it so that I can then install tomato.

I am not able to update the firmware to dd-wrt through the stock firmware. Whenever I use the tftp or a tftp batch, it reports "connect request failed."

The router is not bricked. I am able to log into the stock settings after each failed attempt to flash the new firmware.

What am I doing wrong and how can I get dd-wrt installed?

I have tomato on another buffalo and the installation didn't seem that hard back then.

Answer:Having trouble installing DD-WRT on Buffalo WHR-HP-G54

You have to time the tftp put just right with those guys or you miss the opportunity to flash it. I've done a ton of those routers over the years. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it, especially if you're running anything other than XP or Server 2003. Are you following the guide on the DD-WRT Wiki? Static IP on the correct subnet on your host?

Let me start off by saying i dont know anything about networking and setting up routers and such. But i got one of these routers and need to do a few things with it. Have several questions

I want to be able to throttle the bandwidth to certain devices connected , also log or check the bandwidth used by each connected device. Is this possible?

Where can i find a list of all connected devices? can i control only wireless devices and leave wired devices at full speed?

I tried blocking a couple of websites, but after applying the settings, i was still able to go to those websites.

thanks in advance for anyone that might be able to help me get this set up like i want it

I'm trying to help out a friend who has a Linksys router and some kind of Buffalo "booster" device that a tech set up for him ten years ago. The equipment is out of state and he's not all that computer savvy.

I'm able to access his Linksys router using the public IP address with port 8080, but I have no idea how to access the Buffalo device to adjust its settings. It wouldn't be something like the "http://public IP/local IP : port number" would it?

Is it possible to access the Buffalo remotely or does it need to be Cat-lined to a computer? I'm trying to find out what the model of the Buffalo is. I also don't know which side of the router the Buffalo is on. Because I can access the Linksys, I assume the Buffalo is after it.

Answer:Syntax for accessing a Buffalo

No, the range booster is not going to be on the public (WAN) ip. It should have an internal IP (LAN), you can check the linksys status page for connected devices. Once you find it you can setup port forwarding to it. Just an FYI, don't use port 8080 or whatever the linksys is using, set the port forwarding for the booster to say 8081.

Hi guys,

I have a 500GB Buffalo NAS HDD. it works fine
and you create shared directories through the web based app.

the only problem i have is when i copy data from one dir to another it takes like 32min
to copy...and this doesnt make sense as it is on the same drive...(is this normal?)

there doesnt seem to be any web based data management (none i can see)
how can i get around this?

Answer:Solved: Copying around a buffalo NAS HDD

does this drive have a usb interface? if so, I'd try connecting it via usb and see if that you can use your o/s for your copying
