Foreign Characters/Characters appearing.

Question: Foreign Characters/Characters appearing.

Hi there. This is an odd problem, whenever certain characters are used ("^ are just some) then a letter is pressed foreign characters appear.
I.E
When I press
" Then O it comes up as ?, instead of "O, and so on.
Does anyone have any ideas, on how this could be fixed. I've checked in the regional/language settings, and in the G15 control Panel.
Thanks

Preferred Solution: Foreign Characters/Characters appearing.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Foreign Characters/Characters appearing.

I use English, German and Finnish keyboard layouts on a daily basis. Never had this kind of issue.

Could you please tell which language settings you are using?

I have always used the alt + number pad to access certain foreign characters; for example: alt + 130 gives me . alt + 160 gives me an a with an accent, etc. Now, on this new keyboard, I don't get this feature, which I've had on virtually every keyboard I've ever had. Any ideas?

Never encountered the problem, do you use the Alt key LEFT of the spacebar?

Question: Foreign characters

Hi. My system is running Windows 7 Home Premium. I know that language packs are not available on this version, however I had found a way for characters to display instead of having boxes by deleting C:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT (from http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/9927-cant-display-chinese-korean-fonts.html

and restarting my system. However when the system is booted up after being shut down for the night I notice that the characters return back into boxy form. Any ideas on how I can stop it from being boxy or have a way to remove FNTCACHE.DAT
 for good?

It seems that I can see Thai and I think Arabic and such but I cannot see Korean, Chinese or Japanese.

Answer:Foreign characters

Hi DJ Deoseyus,
I have the same problem too but the it's alternately ie odd or even when I boot up.

Hi,

About two weeks ago a friend tried downloading a PS3 computer version. After that my browser homepage was hijacked with Chinese characters. I was able to reset my browser homepage and Super Anti Spyware detected some a PUP and Trojan that were removed. I have Kaspersky Anti Virus and the first things detected were Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Upatre.fniz & UDS: DangerousObjectMulti.Generic (all in Temp Folders). I still have some files with Chinese characters (C:/Windows/Installer) and I have not been able to run Malware Bytes Anti Malware regardless of how many times I've installed and removed it, not even in Safe Mode. The latest error message is 'SDK Database Load Defaults failed 1812'. It also says that the Threat Scan was completed successfully but when I save the results the log is blank and the requested log is not in the History tab. Other times it says that the Threat Scan was cancelled. At this point I'm at my wits end and would prefer disinfecting the computer without having to reinstall Windows 7. I have prior Hitman Pro and TDSS logs available, if needed. At this time I've attached the logs I ran today. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

[I'm new here, if I've posted this in the wrong forum, I'm sorry!]Somehow, my keyboard (a Gateway FX laptop, American layout, Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, 32-bit), whenever I type ", ', `, ~ or ^ and a vowel, it comes out with a letter with an accent, such as '+a=? or ^+u=?.  It suddenly started doing this, out of the blue.  My questions are:1) Is it possible to switch off/on this setup?2) Is it possible to add new characters to be inserted when a letter combination is typed?Thank you.

Hi folks . . . I just registered to see if anybody here could help me. My apologies if this has been brought up, but a uqick googling did not bring up any previous discussions about this. Unlike every other laptop I've ever owned, I don't see any kind of "hidden" numeric keypad on my new tablet PC. No NUM LOCK key, no faint numbers written over the existing keys. This is a bit of a problem for me because I speak and write in English about 90% of the time (so I don't want to switch to another country's keyboard) but I speak and write in Spanish a substantial minority of the time. I've seen that there is software I can download to map particular characters to particular key-strokes, but . . . really?! Is that the only option I have? Does Lenovo seriously no longer support easy access to the extended characters? There must be something I'm missing, right? I've been a Lenovo tablet user since 2007, when I bought my first X60T. I love these tablets, and I was--and still am--so excited to get my new tablet yesterday. I'm a bit thrown by the chiclet keyboard when I loved the old keyboards, but okay, I can adjust. But I just can't believe that there isn't a substantial number of users who, like me, need those foreign language keys with some frequency. Lenovo seems to have put a premium on making their keyboard less cluttered, but I'd take fully functional over uncluttered any day of the week and twice on Thursday. Is there a built-in solution I'm missing? And most importantly - how to fix the program.
For some reason no one was able to answer me where ever I posted the question.
Someone suggested that it has to do with UTF-8 or Unicode headers, maybe it can help you.

Answer:Why some programs don't open files that contain foreign characters, and others do.

the person/people that wrote the program failed to put unicode support in the program.

you can:
a. hack it, and add unicode support yourself (programming knowledge required, and its not a good idea unless it's an open source program.)
b. find a different program.

Having a strange problem. When my media player hashes my files they appear with missing letters, extra spaces, or strange characters like squares, sometimes chinese looking script. Whats more alarming is when I do a search on youtube for example, strange characters appear in the top part of the wondow (the blue bar up top that says what you are viewing, forgot the technical name). Example: I searched for Aerosmith this morning and the bar up top reads "YouTube - squaresquareAerosmithsquarestrangesymbol-Windows Internet Explorer". The sybols are not spelled out just didnt know how to reproduce them here. Im not really sure what this is. It may also be worth noting that the computer recently crashed and I had Windows XP reinstalled. Problem was there in my media player before, but never in internet searches. Any ideas??? I'm thinking of buying a Lenovo laptop that fits all my requirements except (maybe) one: no numeric keypad. The only reason I need it is because I sometimes need to write in Spanish, and I've used the keypad codes for years for accents and the like. Is it simple to program/map a few of these important characters to use when I need them? I do NOT want to have to go through a 7-click routine to select alternate characters every time I need one.....that will be extremely tiresome. Anyone who knows about this please respond; I really want to buy this laptop, but getting to these characters needs to be easy. Thanks!

The subject of email messages with foreign (Greek in this case) characters will not display correctly, I get something like: =?UTF-=CE=BF=CE=BD_=CE=9F=CE=A4=CE=9... etc. I've set the regional and locale settings to Greek but it doesn't help, and I can't find any specific settings for the Mail app. Is there a solution? Thank you.

update: it looks like this is sender-specific since some emails are displayed correctly.

I have saved the lyrics to many songs in Russian in the MP3 files properties tab. The lyrics can be seen when played in Windows Media Player 8.0 .
Suddenly, this no longer seems possible. When I tried to save lyrics using cyrillic characters ( Russian letters ) recently it changes to nonsense after I try to save it : ( like this )
???? ???? ?????? ????
The files I saved in the past with cyrillic letters can be read and displayed without a problem, but I do not seem to be able to save new files this way.
This is really weird. What is going on? Could something have changed with Service Pack 1 ? ( I have Windows XP Professional )
Why did something that worked fine before suddenly stop working? If this is some global change to the way MP3 files store information, why doesnt the problem extent to old files?
I know this is a little obscure, but I can't be the only one with this problem. My computer is set to accept Cyrillic characters in Word, Internet Explorer and my keyboard is set to switch between these. What could have changed? Is there anyway to change it back? I would appreciate hearing from anybody who has any clue.

Ill be playing a game (So far it has always been full screen games) and some random amount of time after I've been playing a vista themed bar will kind of flash (as in you see it for a second then its gone).

It looks like a one inch section of the task bar on vista with a white text field in the center and a green looping arrow on the right.

When ever I hold down or hit a letter key it will flash and some foreign characters will start appearing like I'm typing Japanese. So I have to restart my game to get it to go away, but after playing the game for a little bit it happens again.

Games it happened to: GTA IV, GTA SA, BF 2142, COD 5, and a couple others

Please help, and if any additional info is needed just say so.
BTW operating system is Vista 32 bit

Thanks in advance

Hello,

I'm having an issue with an OTF font that I recently purchased. I cannot see all of the characters of the font in Windows Font Viewer or in any other applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Office 2007, etc.). For example, the font contains 532 characters but I can only see about 100-200 of them. I've installed the font on a friend's computer, who is running Vista, and I can see the characters just fine. What could be the problem? Or, better yet, how can I fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

EDIT: After testing it on Firefox I see that this problem seems to be only happening on chrome, but I've noticed some of the fonts and symbols are broken on programs like Steam too. I've tried to re install chrome but the problem is never fixed. I'm not sure whats wrong with my computer and chrome?

Some other problems I have with chrome:
Can't see pictures while dragging them
When I copy and paste certain text symbols they break

-----

I've tried just about everything, deleting the font cache, localizing my keyboard to type in Korean (which works for typing only), and doing a windows update. Yet nothing has worked.

I reformatted my computer a month-ish ago by just reverting to factory settings. Before that I've never ever had this problem, i can't understand why Korean font won't display. It's frustrating.

Its not /that/ big of a deal but its super frustrating. **I also can't tell if this is related to the problem or not but also text symbols won't always display properly. Again, not sure if it has to do with the korean font or what but things like a heart text symbol ♡ appear as three lines on top of each other. Same for a few others.

This does not happen all the time.

Please can anyone explain why this happens and if there is a setting or other way of correcting the problem?

I've googled it and it seems like some others have had similar issues, but i'd like to ask if anyone knows what this is all about.
If i copy paste the line seen on screenshot, then this is what i get:

Code:
蓤疖෫媁ᠢ钶븆옃ᢔꡰ缎⚯㦸䢐賴痖口帬ࠣశ꺮蘃긟嘿㥦ế嵾ᗽ烨޵system32\svchost.exe

I'm 100% sure it's not malware or any other type of malicious software, so please don't start saying that my pc has a virus.
What i'd like to know, is where it's coming from and why is windows 10 doing this?

In past, in win 7, i've seen similar chinese characters somewhere in documents and settings folders within some files, i was cleaning my files, going through all the folders in docs and settings and i saw some files having similar names.

It's a fresh install of windows 10, I haven't downloaded anything, but simple things, such as google chrome, ccleaner, winamp, skype ..etc, everything from trusted sources only, so clearly it's not a virus or malware, whatever it is, it's within windows 10.
I don't think it's dangerous, but i'm just trying to figure out why my PC is going chinese on me.

I started up my PC today, and have since restarted to see if that would help, and numbers and many characters are not being displayed.

Here's an image
You can see in the address bar that ". : /" characters do not show, as well as the blacked out shapes that show instead of the letters and numbers of the web address.
Many many options are not showing in any computer settings windows (the list of updates, for example).
As well as the date and time not showing in the taskbar along with the numbers of the calendar.

Googling doesn't help me find any specific help for this; in fact, I can't find anything that even describes this problem.

I don't have a system image to restore to, though I do have a USB with a clean, very small Win7 on it. I'd really rather not have to reinstall Windows entirely, though.

I'm going to restart my PC again, perhaps a few times, and keep checking through settings for a fix, but if anyone has any advice, that'd be great.

edit- It may be pertinent to add that more times than not, recently, Windows Explorer will crash over and over until I force shut down my PC (power button hold).

Answer:Numbers and other characters not appearing, entire computer

Windows Explorer [explorer.exe] crashing over and over is not a good sign. If you can do so, download, install, run tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One), accept defaults, add items 26 & 27 within Safe Mode w/Network, unless you can temporarily disarm real time protection shields. While WR is running, leave all other stuff closed.

Hello, this is my first post to this forum.

I am running an English version of Windows XP Pro SP3 on an Intel-based system in China, on my girlfriends' computer.

The OS is in English so I can do maintenance with minimal bother, and the apps (for the most part,) are in Simplified Chinese, so she can work with minimal bother.

I have Eastern Language Support installed and enabled, and all of the installed IME's work fine. Also, on all installed Adobe and Microsoft apps, the Chinese shows up fine.

However, on kwmusic (a popular chinese music player/search app,) the menus and local content windows only show ????'s and garbage characters instead of Chinese. The online content windows, on the other hand, display the Chinese properly.

Incidentally, the installers for ALL of our Chinese-version apps also display garbage characters instead of Chinese, even though all of the apps but one have no problem after installation.

Just for fun, I tried changing the default non-Unicode language to Simplified Chinese, but that caused the kwmusic app upon opening to return an error screen in garbage characters and ???'s, and shut down immediately. After changing the default non-Unicode language back to US English, it returned to the behavior initially described.

Previously we ran kwmusic on a Simplified Chinese version of XP Home Sp2, and it worked fine.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this matter.

Answer:Windows XP Pro SP3: Garbage characters appearing in some apps

Problem solved. I guess I was on the right track originally.

When I changed the non-unicode language to Simplified Chinese, I forgot that it might be best to REINSTALL the malfunctioning app after making that change.

I realized this just now, acted accordingly, and now all is fine.

Just when you think you've seen it all, recently all the Xerox Phasers we have on the network, are going offline. When looking deeper into it, we found that there are strange characters such as what looks like a cross or weird looking plus sign showing up in the field. Does anyone have any experience with this and why it's happening? We can remove the characters, but they randomly pop up again.

Radom characters have started appearing when I search.  I have been using firefox and google chrome.  On chrome the term tracker ID or something similar was coming up.  I found another forum that seemed to have a similar problem so followed the instructions that were given to her however random characters are still appearing in firefox (although this did stop temporarily) and google chrome has now stopped working entirely.

the last time i opened firefox this came up - https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=3_CyVOm9LcLAcK3ZgaAF&gws_rd=ssl

after searching for bleeping computer this came up - https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=3_CyVOm9LcLAcK3ZgaAF&gws_rd=ssl#q=bleeping+computer

Also over christmas my computer had become infected by the vosterum virus - after following the instructions that were posted on this forum it appeared to go - Could there be a link ? i.e is it possible that I didn't succeed in getting rid of the virus completely.

Also I think I may have become infected with vosterum after a start button update - i'm on windows 8 which has no official start button

I have saved for logs from the scans that I did to try to remove vosterum and the scans that i did recently following the steps that were recomened to a different user with a similar problem

I have two excel spreadsheet that I need to compare using vlookup, using case number to do so. The two sheets have case number stored differently, for example, one has the, displayed as 2012DT00001 or 2001CM00012 and the other sheet displays them as 2012DT1 or 2001CM12. Obviously, they are the same record but when using vlookup to compare the record and bring over information that is on one and not the other it does not work well. I have tried using vlookup to compare and look for approximate matches (TRUE). However, when I look at a sampling of the information it misses 80% of the records. At this point, I am thinking that the vlookup function is missing those records as a result of the two case numbers being different as a result of the unneeded zeros in the one. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How can i edit characters within a string of characters?

Here are two ways to do it:With your data in Column A:
A B
1) 2012DT00001 2012DT1
2) 2001CM00012 2001CM12
In cell B1 enter the formula: =LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5))Drag down as needed. You can now use Column B in your =VLOOKUP() something along the lines of:=VLOOKUP(B1,Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The second way is to use the formula directly in your =VLOOKUP() which eliminates the need for column BSomething like:=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)),Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The trick is in the: VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)) section, it takes the last five characters of your text string, IE 00001 or 00012and converts them from TEXT to a NUMBER, and since Excel strips out any leading zeros in a number you end up with your required digit.See how that works for you.MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/

Hello, I recently bought a new computer with Windows 7 after an old Vista PC I had broke. on my old computer, I used to do a lot of work in Japanese, so I set my keyboards to switch between United Kingdom and Japanese by pressing Alt+Shift.

However, when I tried to apply the same thing on my new computer, it kept automatically adding "United States" to my language bar. I'd check my language settings, but the only two on there were UK and Japanese. I tried adding this non-existant setting and then removing it again to see if that would remove it but the effect was only temporary. Every time I restart the computer, and sometimes on just random occasions while using it, the US keyboard will appear again.

It's an extremely irritating problem and I can't understand why my computer is doing this. The Operating system should be installed as UK. All the settings say that it is, and all my defaults are UK. So why does this computer act like my default keyboard is US?

Answer:A foreign keyboard keeps appearing in my language bar.

I really hope someone can answer this problem. It's a real pain having this extra keyboard appear randomly.

"

how do i do that in VB?? is the like a Chr(xx) or something, please help

i want the textfile to read

bind F1 "+def;buyprime"
thanx heaps

Answer:Different Characters in VB

Either of these methods will achieve the result.

Open "TEST.TXT" For Output As #1
Print #1, "bind F1 ""+def;buyprime"""
Print #1, "bind F1 " & Chr(34) & "+def;buyprime" & Chr(34)
Close #1

Chr(34) is the " character, likewise using two together "" will output one of them to the file.

Hi, I have some files on my win7 home p 32bit pc that have some hidden characters in the filenames. If I copy the files to my xp pc i can clearly see the now unhidden characters, which are mainly squares, and delete them, and then copy them back to my win 7 pc. Both pcs have the same english australian language set, and us keyboard. What do I have to do to see these characters on my win7 pc???????????
Thanks

error file attached when working with these files on my win7 pc

Answer:no characters

Usually a Square means a character a font can't display. Have you deleted any fonts? win7 used Tahoma, Sylfen, and Verdana for various displays.

Hi, there:
I have Windows XP in my PC. It has been working fine, but last week, suddenly I lost 2 characters from my keystrokes.
I have my keyboard configured for Spanish/Costa Rica 101/102 keys, but now I can't use the characters ^ and ` when I type them.
They are supposed to work when I hit "Alt Gr" plus the { or } keys, I mean:
Alt Gr + { = ^
Alt Gr + ] = `
In the other hand, I can actually use the characters and ~, which work with Alt Gr too.
How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Question: Russian Characters

I have some Russian songs and English songs in My Music. The English songs are displayed just fine but the Russian songs are represented with Latin characters with weird accent marks above them.

I went to regional and language settings: advanced: and set the language for non-unicode programs to russian and that worked on two other PCs. Although on this PC, although the titles of the songs are now in Cyrillic, the actual file names are still corrupted. Another problem I have with this method on the two PCs that it worked on was that certain programs, especially during installation, are given in Russian and I only need my songs to be affected, not programs. Thanks

Answer:Russian Characters

All you've done is right, it must work for you.. Try to experiment with the first tab 'regional settings' as well. Otherwise, i'm afraid it's a bad job.

I'm not really sure if this should go here or in coding (since I'm mostly working with Visual Studio). Anyway, I'm working on a project that requires me to take a file and insert the same thing every 8 characters (or after every 8 bytes).

The file is pretty long and having to paste it in every 8 bytes will take forever, so I was wondering if there was a program that could insert something after every specified number of characters to make things a lot quicker. Better yet, is there a faster way to do it directly in Visual Studio?

Thanks.

Question: Chinese characters

When reading text on some (not all) websites, I see Chinese characters in some of the sentences. Here is an example: "Coming back, we decided to take he other road."
I've contacted the author of the newsletter on this website and he has never heard this complaint before. I've checked the same website with two other computers and I DON'T see Chinese characters with my other computers. I've scanned the computer where these appear with Symantec Anti-Virus, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft Antispyware and Spyware Doctor. My anti-virus definitions are updated when available via Symantec.

I don't have IE6 or any other program on my computer set to have the Chinese language as a secondary language.

It is possible that these characters are Japanese Kanji rather than Chinese.

I exchange email with friends in Japan and on Taiwan regularly but don't visit websites written in Chinese or Japanese.

I look forward to getting suggestions on what I should do to get rid of this problem, what scanning software to use, suggestions on what may cause the problem, etc.

Thank you very much.

Is this possible ? it is a pain to keep scrolling through the characters when I have to use them constantly in different applications (word, excel, indesign, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can I customize characters map ?

I am supporting a customer who has a Server 2003 SBS server. We recently migrated this customer to a new Exchange 2013 server running on a Server 2012 server. Some of the mailboxes weren't exported to .PST files before this migration was done and the old Server 2003/Exchange 2003 SBS was demoted. We still have a copy of the Exchange 2003 .EDB file from the old server and have been using a utility called Kernel for Exchange Server (see the screenshot) which is able to extract individual email accounts and place the contents into Outlook .PST files. The problem is that there is a very small percentage of emails in two user's email Inboxes and Sent items folder that are in Chinese (instead of English). This business doesn't have any Chinese employees and have never sent any emails in Chinese. What can be done to fix this issue? Please let me know if any further information is needed.

Oh boy -- am I in trouble!
ALL my windows icon labels, buttons, etc, are illegible -- looks a little like wingdings -- little squares, question marks, half squares, circles, etc. This is with windows XP on a 2.8 GHx box with 512 M RAM, 200 GB hard drive, about 8 months old. It just happened and I am not sure what I did, but it does this to all task bar, start button, program listings, Internet explorer, all windows apps. It's basically unuseable. I don't want to rebuild this computer. This happens in safe mode as well! So I can't read the items in control panel or device manager to select options there. Even the right click options on this page are the same.

The last thing I did was turn off some startup options in SYs mechanic 4. That is all I can remember doing out of the ordinary.

I went into a command window and found sys mechanic 4 , ran it, and turned those startups back on, but no change.

I created a new user, but the same thing happens.

Microsoft Word has only two choices besides Times new Roman for font listing, and the are both scrambled.

I am rnning a scan with McAfee, but I'm sending this before something else happens.

Outlook gives an error which I can't read, of course) , but if I say, don't report it, then it lets me into the mail, IN which only the folder list is scrambled. So I will be able to read your mail

I give up.

Thanks a load for everyone who probably knows about this..

I'm running xp pro w/ sp2 and installed a small program I know (100 % ) does not contain a virus and a couple of minutes afterwards I rebooted and my whole system went garbled like some arabic and machine code characters in all aspect of the operating system. I've tried to reinstall xp even in safemode but I can't even read the cd characters to be able to reinstall. I have never seen anything like this before and any help would be appreciated.
I've recently installed sp2 within the last 24 hours and also converted the drive from fat32 to ntfs .
These characters cannot even be repeated cause they don't exist in our english language.
My screen resolution is fine still looks like 600 x 800 and I can still see all the icons and such perfectly it's just the associated text with every single file, program, icon and option is gibberish.
Computer starts, reboots and shutsdown fine also.
I've tried to do a system restore both thru the system tools/ system restore option as well as in safemode using the %systemrestore32% manual method.
I'm stuck - - any help -- please ! ! !

Answer:unreadeable characters everywhere

What program was this? Is the program in another language? How can you be certain it does not have a virus? Just because you got it from a CD or a person you trust doesn't mean it doesn't have a virus.

Hi

I've searched for this many times, but this is totally annoying, I have some updates to do, but I have my work laptop fully up to date with SP1.... and still an issue..

So below are the characters that randomly appear ( when typing character left of =), I seem to notice more after pasting, but also does not affect every program when it happens.

?=?
"=?
'=?

I have read it is the keyboard language settings, but that is BS because the settigns are unchanged ( set to US anyways)... I have heard others around my office say it has happened to them.... so whats up? Any one have any news on this?

Answer:certain odd characters randomly appear

Are you absolutely sure your keyboard settings are on US? I remember when I first got my computer it always switched the keyboard setting to "Canadian French" even though "US" was the default. Could this or something similar be happening to you as well?

Hi all,I don't know what I did to arrive with this problem, but when I log on now, before the welcome screen and log in names, I'm greeted with a text box and an ok button on it.  I believe the characters on the title bar and inside the box are unicode characters.  You have to click ok, and then you can get to the users screen.  I don't know how to get rid of this.  Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Box with unicode characters before the welcome...

If you would click on the Self Help link below and try out the on-line scanner that could help you, and if you care to scroll down the page there are some freeware anti-virus and anti-Trojan programs which could help too.

Is there anyway to read information from a file after an eof character?

For example, I have a data file that has a bunch of end of file characters before the actual end of the file. There has to be some way around it... Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:end of file characters???

Unless you're using getc() (Which you shouldn't), just check the return value of ie. fgets() (Recursively until you get an EOF as fgets() is line-per-line)
