Issue with USB Graphics Adapter and Lock Screen

Question: Issue with USB Graphics Adapter and Lock Screen

Hello,

I have an HP Elitebook 850 G1 with the slim docking station running Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. Connected to the docking station I have a display port to DVI converter that connects to monitor 1. I dont use the laptop display while its on the dock so the laptop is closed. Connected to the dock I also have a StarTech USB32DVIEH adapter that connects to monitor 2. My problem is that when I lock the PC, monitor 1 will display the lockscreen (as expected) but the monitor 2 will basically take a "screenshot" of whatever windows/etc was on the screen and show it while locked. Monitor 2 usually has Outlook opened on it so in this example the lock screen shows whatever was on that screen when I locked it. The content doesnt refresh but still, its a pain since now I have to minimize anything on monitor 2 before locking it or basically someone could come by and see it. I think this is a driver problem but ive updated as many drivers as I can to the latest. I tried a different USB video adapter (Sabrent USB-DH88) and it didnt have the lock screen issue but I couldnt keep using it since anything on that screen was very laggy. The StarTech adapter works fine except for this lockscreen issue.

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Issue with USB Graphics Adapter and Lock Screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Issue with USB Graphics Adapter and Lock Screen

I looked up your docking port and it has two DisplayPort ports. Is it possible to use another DisplayPort to DVI adapter on it? Or can you use the docking port's built in VGA adapter on one of your monitors?

That's all I can think of. There are DisplayPort adapters which can split the signal and allow both ports to be used at once.

Mainboard: PC Chips M748MR 1.0
OS:W98SE
CPU: PII 350MHz
RAM: 256MB

Working on a friends PC.

Mainboard has an on-board 64 bit 3D AGP Graphics Accelerator, however, it appears to have gone south. Windows boots, etc, and the Desktop screen is black with a few lines at the very top.

Decided to install a PCI Display Adapter: S3 ViRGE-DX/GX PCI(375/385) (What he had on hand.)

Went into BIOS Setup and made some changes:
In the Plug and Play area:
Primary Graphics Adapter: changed from AGP to PCI
Assign IRQ for VGA: No
In the Advanced CMOS Setup:
Primary Display: Absent??? Do not know if this disables the on-board video.

In Device Manager, View Devices by Type, under Display Adapters TWO entries show up:
S3 ViRGE-DX/GX PCI...
Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) (!) exclamation mark

In Device Manager, View Devices by Connection, under Plug and Play BIOS, PCI Bus, PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge:
Standard PCI..... (!) exclamation mark

Have tried removing the darn Adapters in Device Manager trying to get the PC to display just the S3 ViRGE, but to no avail. Every time it comes back with two.

Sure appreciate some help on this one.

Hello fellow Thinkpad users. My company distributes ThinkPads it all employees (we use a virtual office and work from home). I'd like to change the welcome and lock screens to brand our laptops with our company logo and such. I'm familiar with changing these screens in Windows 7, but with the fingerprint scanner, it's different. I've searched on the web with litle success. I found a couple threads discussing the use of software like reshack to modify the dll's and exe's, but I have yet to find where these are located. I found the graphics for the big icon: C:\Program Files\ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software\rsc\ViLogLd1.png. I've also found the "Think" backgound image. What I can't find, is how to change the text below the icon that says, "Please swipe your finger on green." Anyone know where ot change this? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

You may have to resort to Resource Hacker and finding the proper DLL to edit.

Hi Gang,

My DV-7 Laptop which is running A Radeon 3200 Graphics adapter, was on the RTM release of 10 just fine.

I decided to accept the new insider build of 10525, and it went through, however, the OS when looking at the display is using the MS basic display adapter (when clicking on advanced display settings), when in device manager the Radeon is still listed as the adapter and with no issues (no errors or codes or exclamation points)

This causes an issue whereas I cannot get my 1440x900 native resolution on the screen.

I've rolled back to the RTM for the moment, but had tried:

Uninstalling both monitor and display adapter and rebooting.

Can't rollback the driver, as it was an upgrade, plus, it's the same 2015 driver used in the RTM, rechecked dev manager after I reverted, so nothing is different in dev manager between builds here.

I'm stumped. I can stay on the RTM for now, but if I'm going to try out the latest builds later on, I'd need something to figure out this apparent loss of it being seen by the build, even when the adapter itself is the only one listed.

Thanks beforehand....

Answer:Graphics issue going to build 10525 - basic adapter used

My desktop HD3850 card was the same - fine before the new build - 1280X1024 after. I eventually got it going using the "let me choose from a list of devices on my computer" which showed a driver with a date of sometime in 2015 as opposed to the 2013 stuff I had tried to install. After much black screening and device connect/disconnect noises it was back to it's 1920X1080 and two monitors

Hello Everyone. I am tired of struggling with this strangest of problems. I am on Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Build 10240.

When I start up my laptop, it goes to my lock screen. I can sit and stare at the lock screen for more than 5 minutes and then I swipe my finger to logon to Windows straight from the Lock Screen. Now I am logged in Windows. Here comes the problem.

I decide to Lock my windows WIN + L. Then I stare at my Lock Screen once again, BUT after about 1 and a half - 2 minutes, The Login screen with my name comes up and the circle is spinning as if its trying to logon by itself? Then it jumps back to my lock screen. Wait another minute and a half and it does the same thing again. Over and over. Without even touching anything. I just want it to remain on the lock screen, not want to see the screen change automatically to Login screen and back to Lock Screen.

Please I need your help. Cant find any solutions. Thanks.

I just recently purchased a new PC with Windows 8.1 and I've been trying to change the lock screen picture but every time I try it doesn't actually change. It just stays as the default lock screen picture. In my PC settings it actually shows the picture I want but when I'm on the lock screen it's just the default picture. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks

Under group policy > administrative > control panel > personalization > do not display the lock screen: it is enabled. and the associated registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization NoLockScreen is set correctly to 1. Yet upon bootup I'm presented with the lock screen that I must dismiss to get to the login screen to enter my password. This policy setting is supposed to turn off that pointless screen so that the login screen is presented right away. This was not an issue prior to the update. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks.

I have an odd issue with the Bing Lock screen info on my phone (Lumia 925, running WP 8.1). It used to be that if I wanted to know anything about the bing image of the day, I could go into Settings>Lockscreen and right under the Bing setting could read some fine print indicating what the photo is and where it was taken. I frequently check this, as I'm very impressed by many of the images, and generally am interested in knowing where they come from. Lately however, I would say for about the last week, when I check the information now, it's all in Chinese, and I cannot understand what it's saying about the Bing image of the day. ALL the other settings on my phone (regional, language, etc.) are in English, so I have no idea why I'm getting this information in Chinese, other than the fact that I currently am living and working in China (but have been for the past 5 years, and this issue just presented itself very recently).

After sever failed attempts to rectify the problem with Dell in the past, I was wondering if this was a one-time "only happens to me" issue or if others had the same problem and theirs was fixed.  My XPS will go into "lock screen" within 10 seconds of being inactive.  The power settings have been checked and rechecked, the screen saver settings have been checked and rechecked, and the video card has been tested and retested.  Any ideas on how to proceed?  I cannot relay how annoying and cumbersome it is to have to constantly sign in while trying to work on the PC.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Some apps will not show notices, calls show notices, but Skype, Line, Hotmail or FB do not. I have tried a hard reset, and verified that I have enabled them for the lock screen. All I get is the icon at the top of the phone for the notification center.
I have filed a feedback item for this.

Not all apps have this ability currently. The developers have to enable this (afaik)
The FB and Messenger app are an example. Still no lockscreen support from them

I am going to try to describe this issue as best as I can, though it is an elusive beast...

If the AMD drivers are installed for my GPU, and I lock the computer (Win-L, not put to sleep), then come back *some time* later, both of my screens respond to moving my mouse and exit sleep mode, however, the screens just show black - I see no lock screen. It behaves the same as if the unlock screen would actually be displayed in that it waits for a minute and, not noticing input, the screens turn off again. If I try to CTRL-ALT-DEL and enter my password to log in, the PC does not respond. The only solution is to force reboot.

Now, I have a similar experience if I remove the drivers via Programs and Features, which means I'm running off stock Windows drivers (I'm guessing at this point, I don't understand how I get good graphics performance in games from my GPU when I remove the AMD drivers... if someone could explain that to me I would appreciate it).

However, it's different. Only one screen turns on, but it simply shows black. The other stays off (in sleep mode). In this situation, I am able to blindly hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, enter my password, and log in - which then displays the desktop on both screens - but the monitor that did turn on defaults resolution to 640x480, and I hear the 'device removed' sound. If I look in the Screen Resolution CP, it shows 1920x1080, and changing it has no effect. Because I cannot get it to restore normal resolution, I am forced to reboot.

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Hi,
I'm facing blue screen recently on my Dell XPS 9550 laptop. I've opened ticket to Dell support and their offer was "reinstall Windows 10 OS again and tell us the result" which is unacceptable for me.
When I open the computer the screen is disappearing suddenly and comes back again with fluctuation. Especially It was occurring all the times when I lock my Windows-10 screen then try to login again.
I am attaching the screen captures.
1) Stop Code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE || igdkm64.sys
2) Stop Code: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
After all; I found the soultion as below.
Closed this application --> C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\Dell PremierColor\PremierColor.exe  and removed from startup everything worked fine and had not any blue screen issue.
Dear Dell and community, at least, Dell me what does PremierColor.exe do? And why we're facing this issue while PremierColor is open?

The title pretty much sums it up, but I'll here's the more in depth story:I downloaded a PC tune-up program from AVG (I had used their anti-virus before w/o issue) and when I ran it, my computer took forever to reapair disk (>4hrs) and it gave me other problems with files being screwed and what-not. I tried to install a back-up off of a external hard drive with no luck. I ended up taking my computer to be repaired by a repair shop and they ended up having to re-install windows 8. I got my computer back and started to install drivers from the Lenovo site for my Y410p. However at the moment I cannot change the brightness level of the screen on the right hand side of the screen in the charms menu the birghtness option is darker than the other options and says 'unavalible'. I believe this is caused by an issue with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter as it has a yellow warning sign in the device manager. The other problem I am having is that the graphics card seems to be 'missing', as in any information about it is completely gone from the computer. I looked under Hardware and Sound in the control panel (I think I remember seeing the NVidia control panel there prior to re-install) and it was not present. I also tried searching 'nvidia' via the charm option and nothing came up. Working with computers is definitely not one of my strengths and any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi all,

Upon upgrading to w10 I encountered the black screen issue. When plugging in another screen to the HDMI adapter on my laptop the display appears working perfectly. The laptop screen only shows anything during boot, as soon as the system starts it sits with a black screen.

If i disable the onboard gfx and reboot the screen will display on the laptop, however it is using "microsoft basic display" and not the onboard gt 555m

I have up to date drivers from g force, I have up to date drivers from intel. I am at a loss as to how to solve this.

When another monitor is connected it works absolutely perfectly. The issue is it just wont pick up the laptop screen at all.

Edit - The issue seems to be the GT 555 graphics card. The onboard is the one that's actually detected and working however this is only as an external monitor not with the laptop display. GT 555 is updated via the Nvidia app and says it's W10 ready, yet it's not functioning in any capacity it seems.

The screen on my Thinkpad T410 with integrated graphics will sporadically mess up. All the colors will turn bright and whitish. The resolution and everything else stays the same, just the colors mess up--getting bright as if in a lower color depth perhaps? I don't know how to explain it and I don't know if it is a software or hardware problem. After a short while it'll go away. Has anyone heard of this? Should I take the machine in?

Hi! My T410 has begun acting up a bit. The screen turns itself off after approx. 10 minutes of inactivity, even if my settings have been set to wait longer. This also occurs while viewing movies/shows in VLC, which is highly annoying (having to tap the mousepad every so often. Any tips on how to make it go away? What I've tried:- Reinstalling power manager- Installed newest nVidia Verde drivers- Updating BIOS- Checking settings in Windows power manager as well as the ThinkVantage Power Manager OS is Windows 7 Professional (the issue is not there in Linux (Ubuntu 11.04)). Any advice appreciated - the issue also occurs when playing games etc., and the screen often flashes several times before "waking up" again. Thanks!

Answer:T410 Screen/graphics issue

hey Flim, since you mentioned Ubuntu 11.04 , did this issue occur before you made your unit into a dual boot or did it happen after your T410 became a dual boot unit ?currently the bios for your unit is at v1.38 ?try uninstalling the power manager completely as well as the nvidia drivers and let windows install its generic video driver.

I've had this issue for a very long time now, and it's still something I'm trying to work on, because if I don't fix it, it's going to ruin the games I play by blacking my screen out all the time.

The graphics card I have is a Nvidia GeForce 9200. I have an Acer Aspire Windows 8 desktop (Professional), with an AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor. The memory is 4.0GB

Yes, I'll admit, a crappy PC for playing lots of games in general and to be honest, a bit like dogcrap. lol I bought this back in 2009, and it was on sale at the time, because I had to replace my falling apart PC before it that could have been better.

The main issue I am having revolves around updating from Windows Update. I had to start doing it manually because the screen was blacking out every time I clicked on Windows 8 to be the OS I want to start up, where my monitor flicks on and off repeatedly with no stop in sight, even though I can hear the start-up screen in the background of it all. I think the issue is mainly with trying to install ANY Windows 8 update (because I have tried), and the same goes with updating Nvidia (manually and through Windows Update). I have had this issue for more than 4 months now, and it's becoming maddening. I'm not sure if I should just hope I'll win a PC giveaway at some point, or hope my tax refund this year will help me get another PC that might be better than this pain in the butt.

I have noticed that this graphics card might not be that compatible with Windows 8 from check... Read more

Answer:Issue with Graphics Card and Blank Screen?

I've had the black screen issue with the 9800gt which I think is a newer card than the 9200.

My black screen issues arose as soon as you booted into Win 8. I would have got a few minutes of usage but when entering the desktop area - bingo, black screen of death.

As my card like yours, is an older card, it will not run on the newer drivers. After many weeks of frustration, I installed the older 295.73 drivers from the Nvida site and hide any updates that windows offers.

Basically due to the age of the card, I'm stuck with these drivers for ever more. My guess you have the same problem. I'm assuming that at one stage the card worked until updates were applied via Windows?

I booted in safe mode and ran a utility called driversweeper befor I installed the downgraded drivers. Might be worth a blast!

Answer:Lenovo Yoga 13 Screen/Graphics Issue

I think a software thing. Maybe the software you are using to play the BluRay does not handle realease the RAM??The only hardware thing I could imagine is that the Yoga gets too hot. Check your temperature pls

My laptop doesn't want to use all of the available space on the screen. There is a 2-3" black area (no video) on the right hand side and a 1/2" area along the bottom that may be black as well. There is a graphics hiccup below the start button as well. I have reinstalled the graphics drivers, updated any other display drivers I could find and I've played with all of the resolution screen size settings numerous times. My mouse will not go into these black areas. It's like the edge of the screen.
Unit is running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

Hardware issue? Software issue? Any help is much appreciated. Brian

Don't log in :-D

Use a very difficult password. We have plenty of password generators on majorgeeks.
Enable the system admin account and password protect it.
Those two are probably enough. How advanced is he?

Hey everyone, been a while now

So i got a new computer, happened to be an emachine. Knowing that emachines usually fail within a year, I replaced the powersupply with a Rosewill 300w ATX Power Supply. Since my older computer fried due to a powersupply failure, I decided to test my old parts in the new computer. I added 512MB Kingston ValueRAM, a GeForce FX5500 PCI Video card, my old hard drive from my old machine, and a new optical drive, a CD-RW 48x drive. After installing and configuring all the parts, and chaecking that all the parts worked, I went on to play World of Warcraft. After about 2 hours of play the screen began to flicker, and my framerate went down to around 7 fps. Then the screen went totally blank and the monitor read [[NO SIGNAL]]. I tried installing the latest drivers for the video card, but the same problem happened again. To me, it seems like it was overheating. The fans were running at full blast. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance

Hello, I am having a screen flickering issue for some time now and I have narrowed down the issue to my graphics cards and settings.

I have an Asus x73s Laptop with both Intel HD* Graphics 3000 and an Nvidia 610m GPU.

The screen flickering I experience is when I am on my windows 7 desktop. It doesnt matter if I have any programs open or none at all my screen usually flickers. Sometimes it can go hours without doing this. I have no external display available to connect it to through HDMI to check if it happens on an external display.

I have sent my laptop in for repair under warrenty for this before and they said it was not an issue with my screen after a comprehensive hardware test and is a graphics or driver issue. But because the repair depot also sucks balls their solution was to backup my files, wipe and restore my laptop... That fixed it for a few months but the flickering is back.

I have gone through my Nvidia Control Panel and made sure my Nvidia 610m is set to be the priority GPU my laptop uses and have turned off the power saveing settings on the Intel Graphics control panel as i almost always have my laptop plugged in anyways.

The strangest thing I have only just noticed today is there is no screen flicker when playing games or when a game is alt+tabbed in the background.

Currently as I am writing this post I have launched Company Of Heros via Steam and then Alt + Tabbed back to my desktop. When I tab back and exit the game my screen will st... Read more

Sony Vaio - Model: SVE141R11L
Product name: SVE14135CXB
Pre-loaded with Windows 8 x64
Intel(R) Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz

Purchased in Navy Exchange last year (around July 2013)

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. However, my cursor was fully able to move around the screen, and my caps/num lock buttons work as they display the lights enabling/disabling them. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly e... Read more

Hey, I wanted to put some new games on my Laptop, and I got the Direct X 9.0c Compatible Graphics Adapter message. So I went online, and was instructed to go onto Device Manager and I found I had Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, so then I got some kind of update checker and it looked through my hardware and found that my Graphic Adapter needed updating...

I have already put some of the games I want on my laptop before now, and un-installed them when I ran out of space, and now I have more space I want to put them back on.

I tried a link for the Update, but it told me to use Windows Update, but it doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone know a free way of updating Standard VGA Graphics Adapter?

That would be helpful x :grinthumb

Well, I have no idea what caused this but the tablet buttons (even the on/off button) the lights for caps lock and scroll lock as well as the automatic screen orientation change when I flip it to be a tablet have stopped working. Also the screen does not turn off anymore when the lid is closed. Reinstalled pretty much all of the drivers, no effect.Any ideas? Is this thing already broken?

Answer:X41 tablet buttons + scroll lock and caps lock lights + screen orientation change stopped working!

well, SOMETHING is broken.. though it would seen unlikely it is hardware.. a question: did you load anything new just before this happened..?anything at all..scanner drivers or printer drivers or a new application..? OH!, welcome to the lenovo community..!

I've tried searching through the forum but can't see anyone who has a similar issue.

I can access the lock screen settings and I can see all available apps and have set a detailed status app and a couple of less detailed ones. However, when I actually get to the lock screen after having set the apps to appear, there is nothing but the time and date and WiFi in bottom-right corner.

Could this be because I am logging in locally rather than using a MS account?

Can anyone tell me how to eliminate the lock screen preview and bypass the 'Sign In' button on the lock screen?

I often put my computer to sleep then to bring it back (in Windows 7) I would simply hit the space bar and turn on my mouse and it would go straight to my desktop. Now, I hit the space bar turn on my mouse, and it takes me to the lock screen preview then I hit the space bar and it takes me to a lock screen where I have to click 'Sign In' even though I have no password set.

I'm guessing I'll no longer be able to hit the spacebar, turn on my mouse and go directly to the desktop but if I can hit the spacebar, turn on the mouse, then hit the space bar one last time, that would be satisfactory.

Answer:Lock Screen Preview and Lock Screen nuisance

Turns out, the instructions I found to not require a password at the sign in screen did the trick for me.

The problem I have is, when browsing the web, using photoshop and Rhino ( CAD ), I get these weird colored pixels.

When I am only using a VGA cable, this doesn't happen. This doesn't happen on my laptop screen as well.
I updated my Nvidia driver to the latest on Lenovo's website ( version: 9.18.13.1100).

At first I was told that it could be the cable, but since I can make a screen cap of it, it shouldn't be just the cable or monitor. What else can I do to resolve this? It gets annoying because I do a lot of graphic related work.

Answer:T420i Graphics Card issue (weird pixels on screen)

Firstly, the ThinkPad T420 machines weren't sold with a quad core i7 CPU. So there could be some hardware issues involved. But lets try to troubleshoot the software side first. Can you switch the GPU model to discrete only in BIOS? and then repeat the same procedure by switching to integrated GPU. Do these two gpu mode produce the same screen issue when on displayport->hdmi?

Evidently there are some really awesome games in the metro store, but I wouldn't really know because they all either fail to load or BSOD. Notable exceptions: Pirates Love Daisies, which is great and doesn't crash my system, and Cut The Rope, ditto. Mah Jong runs and is an ok game.

Some games (Trump, and Carmen Sandiego) loaded before I figured out how to install my manufacturer's graphics driver, with Win8 running the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. MBDA failed to recognize my screen's native res of 1366/768, and set the res to 1024/768 (stretched). After updating the driver to Intel GMA 500 8.14.100.2030 both games will launch, but then stall out on the loading screen, eventually reverting back to metro/start but still trying to load in the background.

Other games (Hive Mind) launch and load, but then BSOD when you try to play.
Cut the rope runs but gave me a low memory warning then ran perfectly without any lag.

All in all, this is really a lot of app failures considering that these games are supposed to be optimized for tablets.

Answer:So many metro games crash, screen res or graphics driver issue?

Hi,

You've said the magic term: BSOD

We will fix your machine easily for you. Please see the Crash And Debugging subforum. The top thread details what you have to do so we can fix it.

Hello,

I have a Sattelite A60, and I have had it for a year, and now suddenly, I have frequent crashes. The Blue Screen of Death tells me that it is caused by a driver not working properly, namely an ATI driver.

Answer:Satellite A60: ATI graphics driver issue - blue screen error

Hi

Usually the blue screen of death appears because of a serious software problems or the hardware malfunction. In your case I would recommend to reinstalling the graphic driver.
Check the Toshiba driver page for the updates.
If it doesn?t help and the blue screen appears again so it would be very interesting to know the details of the blue screen, for example stop: xxxxxx

Check it.

Hi everyone,

I have a 2 year old system that was working perfectly with the following specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate SP1
CPU: Intel Core i5 2400, 3.10 GHz
RAM: 4 GB Single Channel DDR3 821 MHz
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67LE
Graphics Card: Gigabyte - GV-R685OC-1GD
HDD: 932GB Western Digital WDC WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0

Suddenly one day when I was using the computer normally, the screen went black... There was no cursor, no desktop and Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't do anything. I hard rebooted, it started up fine and the windows logon screen appeared. However, as soon as I typed in my password and hit enter, the screen went black again, no cursor, no desktop and unresponsive. Sometimes some funny gray lines would appear on the screen but otherwise it was black.

I looked extensively for answers on this forum and it seemed to be essentially the same problem as described here (Black screen of death in Windows 7 64-bit Professional) so we used Stevan23's post as a troubleshooting guide. We tried virtually everything on Stevan23's list that was relevant to my system, and just like his experience, we never saw the black screen in safe mode.

My partner and I both have identical systems (identical hardware, except he runs a Linux OS), so I was able to test my graphics card in his system. Exactly the same thing happened, i.e. computer starts up ok but the screen goes black after the bios screen and never loads the desktop.

We also tried his identical graphics card in my system; it's working fine ... Read more

Lenovo Y720 So, when I hit caps ock or num lock an on screen display tells me whether capslock or num ock has been pushed. While I appreciate it is helpful for some, in my case it become a hinderance. You need to remove "num lock" for single key print screen request, and if I have a short time frame, I am stuck without being able to screenshot until the num lock indicator goes away.  How do I turn off the on screen display.  Now, before you send me to the previously asked questions of similar nature, I have tried. There is no "display settings" in Control Panel. There is no "advanced display settings" on the settings panel. And there is no way to control it through NVIDIA or Intel graphics settings (that I can see).  Thanks kindly.

Good afternoon,

I just did a clean install of 7 to fix errors with my laptop, and it fixed one, but not the other main issues,
My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.

Any help in this area would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Hi,

I have a HP Pavillion laptop model dv9292eu. The graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce Go 7600 and I am having issues with it. It appears the drivers have been corrupted. I cannot boot into normal mode. I keep getting vertical green lines in the background.

When i get to the login screen the famous blue screen appears which states the following:

Attempt to reset the device driver and recovery failed. Collecting crash dump.....100%

Then the computer restarts.

I then logged into Safe mode and the following message appeared:

Okay, I'm really depending on you guys to help me out here.
So, my computer is overheating at temps ~above 60C. My Nvidia Geforce GT 335m wont update, from the nvidia download page, nor from device manager. I was just simply updating my drivers from Device Manager, when I went to update my VGA Graphics a screen came up and said an error was encountered with Nvidia GeForce GT 335m. Now device manager says VGA Standard graphics adapter cannot start. Could this be causing overheating? I'm also getting strange crashes in League of Legends since this happened, where I get a Black Screen and need to hard reboot my computer sometimes after games.
Anyway, its like my Nvidia graphics card is "missing" or something. P.S. I also have an under laptop cooling fan.Edit
Also, would restoring to factory settings return my drivers to default again, and possibly fix this problem?
Here are my Computer Specs"

Model:Alienware M11xR2
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU U 250 @ 1.07GHz
Installed RAM: 4.00GB (3.8 usable)
Windows 7 64bit
Display adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics and Standard VGA graphics adapter

Answer:Overheating, missing graphics card, and VGA graphics adapter not working.

Hi All.

I have a new one installed Lenovo T450s with Windows 10 Entreprise.
I have joined the machine into a domain without some active GPO.
When I'm at home or sitting at a customer and must unlock the screen, it takes a war! It is as if searching for the DNS server for my AD domain as my PC is a member of.
In Windows 7 or Windows 8 there is no problem.
This is not a problem in Windows 7 or Windows 8.
Some have suggestions?

Thank you

Ok I've been suffering this issue with Windows 10 for as long as I can remember, and it's stopping me using it as the primary OS.

In short I have two, intermittent issues which nothing I do seems to resolve.

1: After waking up from sleep and typing my username password and hitting return, the screen goes black. Cursor moves, Windows + P operates (Screen options do appear from the right) but doesn't actually make any difference, and I'm stuck having to hard reset because ctrl alt del doesn't work either. This isn't an every time issue, hence googling seems to fail miserably because all the examples are people getting it every time. This, for me, is a 3 in 10 regularity.

2: Logging a user off occasionally sees the lock screen ... locking up. Ironically. Mouse moves, and power button DOES work but that's all that works.

These issues are plaguing me and I just cannot fix them - endless googling has left me empty handed, and I've tried disabling SLI. No help. I've tried disabling apps. No help. Nothing I do makes any difference and event viewer doesn't seem to reveal anything useful either.

Anyone got any idea how I can resolve this?

Because of this, the resolution isn't displayed correctly and everything is enlarged. This is very annoying. Can anyone help please?? >-<

Hey guys, Just got my W530 and its a great machine except for 2 things. The battery looseness which I have read is normal for one. The other problem is that I cant eject my hard drive bay adapter that came configured with it. The lock position from "lock" to "unlock" will not move and I have used considerable force. Any more and I feared breaking the plastic. Does anyone know any tricks to get this open, is it is just a matter of force? I have seen videos on the net where they open quite easily. Thanks alot.

Answer:Lock on bay adapter will not unlock

Did you order the W530 with RAID enabled? If so, there is a screw the hole next to the unlock slider that prevents the slider from accidentally moving.

Hi! So, I've upgraded to Windows 8 RTM this weekend and I'm having this problem: Every time I boot the PC (shutdown or restart), the Num Lock key is off. Since my password uses numbers, and I'm pretty used to type it with Num Lock, I'd like to keep it always on. It was fine on Windows 7. Now, I've searched for it, and there is the "InitialKeyboardIndicators" key on regedit. I have changed values for all of them to "2", and it didn't work. My BIOS say to keep it always on. Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Answer:Num Lock always activated on lock screen

Netplwiz, or tap num lock before starting password entry.

Besides those, you can check to make sure keyboard is plugged in directly to motherboard instead of add-on card or something.

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

I have an x61t that when it locks for screen saver password and you have to CTRL ALT Delete the relog back on. the CAPS lock on the onscreen keyboard indicates on but it's not. 1. Log into the tablet.2. The screensaver would lock the tablet.3. Press Ctrl Alt Delete to get to the logon screen.4. The on screen keyboard would show the Caps Lock key as on but it wasn't. If they pressed the Caps Lock key it would then be on.5. The users don't press the Caps Lock key now, even though it is being displayed as on, and they can logon OK. I cannot recreate this problem on another X61tablet and this behaviour happens even when the notebook is in a docking station with an external keyboard.  anybody seen this error before?

Hi,

My Multicom Xishan W350E Laptop has two graphics cards installed: Intel HD Graphics 4000 and GeForce GTX 660M. As far as I understand the laptop will start on the lower end Intel card and when called for in for example a game, the GeForce GTX card will start and at the same time a small orange light will indicate that the better card is running.

Unfortunately I have had a few experiences where the orange light has been lit, however the lagging experienced in games are so great that the GeForce card hardly can be running.

Is there a way to force the GeForce to be the only graphics card used and perhaps disable the Intel card? My laptop is always connected to power anyway so I do not need the Intel card to save any battery power.

Thanks for helping.

Hey guys. I've had this laptop for about 2 years now, and at first it ran pretty much any game on high settings. Then one day my framerate dropped off out of the blue. Games I used to play on High (Star Wars The Old Republic, and Minecraft) I'd get a solid 50-60fps. Now I'm lucky if I get 10fps. Even League Of Legends, which isnt so graphic intensive, only runs at about 25fps. What's the deall? I've tried updated drivers, direct x, and whatever else needed to keep my system current. I've tried both methods of switchable graphics. No change. What's even weirder is that sometimes while trying to play swtor my card seems to "wake up" and runs smooth as silk. Perfect framerate, looks great....then back down to horrible. Any suggestions of what I might be able to try or what the issue could be? As far as I can remember this happend overnight without any warning signs.

After installing Windows 10 the wired Ethernet adapter is missing from the device manager. I found similar threads in the forum but most of the answers concern downloading of drivers for the adapter. My question is how do I download the adapter. One person said they had solved the issue by turning off and unplugging their pc for about 15 minutes. I use a laptop and doing this had no effect.

Answer:Network adapter issue, not a driver issue.

Hello DavidT Welcome to the Ten Forums!

You don't download an adapter since that is either the onboard option(Lan, WiFi adapter) or a separate expansion card or "nic" card seen mostly on desktops. Have you looked under "Other devices" at all? The likely reason you would find it there is that the model in your system specs if the same only sees support as far as Windows 7 and not at least 8, 8.1 which is where you are running into the main problem.

Something else on the board however might be compatible with 10 and why you didn't simply end up seeing the "inccompatible with Windows 10" screen come up on you. Another HP laptop did see 8, 8.1 updates and was instantly connected online here when upgrading from the 32bit 7 Home Premium OEM to the 64bit 10 Home following the initial upgrade which was immediately followed by the 32bit 10 clean install before switching flavors.

Here's the fun part! Originally when first bringing the laptop to a full time care facility it connected to the web immediately for some time and then lost the web access while still connecting the private network hub at that location. Following the upgrade it still would not connect until I mentioned something to a staff member not one of the usual nurses or orderlies. The following week 10 was on the web suggesting that the WiFi router had been recycled. That is turning off or unplugging the router for so long at least a half minute and then it resyncs with the modem or if ... Read more

Hello all, I wonder if anyone found working drivers to switch graphics between the integrated and the ATI one.  The problem I have is that I once installed the Beta drivers for Win 7 and it all worked fine except that I did not get the on screen displays for brightness and the mute key did not work (though volume keys worked) Now, after installing an update for the ATI driver, I got the onscreen displays and the mute key to work but I cant change the brightness when using the ATI graphics. ATI has a beta release for the win 7 os on their website but for the latest they can do they recommend going to the laptop manufacturer's site. At the site I downloaded every possible driver without success (and once I got a blank screen after windows loaded...I had to start in safe mode and remove all ATI drivers to get a display at start up) so I am running now on the integrated graphics card and it works fine but if I switch to the ATI I run the risk of not only not being able to change the brightness but also not being able to go back to the integrated graphics (it once told me to close all 3d and video applications before switching when there was nothing open) Is anyone else having a similar problem to mine? I ran out of options at the lenovo site so I dont know what to do now. New drivers anytime soon? Best, Max

Modern Intel systems swap between internal/external graphics processors depending on need, the WEI is hardly a detailed indicator of performance in any case. Get something like 3DMark which will push your system enough to use the dedicated GPU and you'll get a far clearer idea of your computer's performance/speed at the end; http://www.filehippo.com/download3dmarkvantage/

I'm running a dell inspiron 1545 (vista 32).

When trying to open the intel graphics driver properties it won't open (no error message)
When I try to change the display settings I get the error message "the currently selected graphics driver can not be used (written for a older version of windows)
When I run dixdiag I get the error that direct input isn't responding.
I tried to download drivers from intel but I got the error message that my machine doesen't meet the system requirements (I'm not entirly sure I picked the right software)

All the drivers from the dell site appear to do nothing and I've updated from direct 9 to 11.

Still no fix

If anyone can help me fix it give me your email and I'll gift you a itunes voucher or something, this problem is causing huge problems for me.

Much appreciated

Hi, I'm having a problem installing appropriate drivers for my graphics card on Windows Vista.
XpertVision nvidia 8500GT Super 512mb graphics card
Asus M2N-e SLI mobo

This is a fresh install of Vista Business, and I have tried both x64 and x32 for my system.

I install the OS fine, when I load up there is some ghost on the screen, when the windows screen with the bar moving from left to right, a few pixels are repeated to the right of the screen in blue. A similar effect in in the BIOS loading screen. This doesn't effect the loading of OS at first.
I then install the correct driver and on reboot I get BSODs and freezes with a blank screen. I then have to load the install disk and do a system restore to save from reinstalling OS. I have tried the original disk that came with the graphics card, drivers downloaded from XpertVision and from Nvidia - all reach the same conclusion.

Please note, this is a cross post from http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/662130-reboots-load-up.html

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Most annoying, and I don't know where it came from or how to turn it off. Anyone else have this issue?

I can't tell exactly when this started as I have upgraded the NVIDIA drivers as well as the Dell bios and switched from running the onboard Intel HD 630 to GTX 750ti , but now on a cold boot, with the fast startup off, the screen flashes white for a sec after the Dell logo. It could possibly be white noise but I can't focus on it fast enough. It doesn't happen on restarts. I'm connected via hdmi out to a LG TV.
Dell XPS 8910 using the NVidia GTX 750ti and an HDMI TV as monitor Bios version is 1.1.0 ,1.1.0 Original version was 1.0.9, 1.0.9, can I revert back to 1.0.9 ?

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.

The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! ehdrv
-! epfwwfp
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.

The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... But if you wish to display a plain login screen, Open Start Menu, click on Settings.
Open Personalization settings and select Lock screen from the left panel.
Here you will see Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen.

Hello, Windows 10 Pro, fully fully updated. The following happens on two completely different machines (desktop and laptop of different manufacturers).

Up until some time ago (I believe, before Creator's Update, but not 100% certain about that), I used to have Windows Spotlight activated, so that almost every day or every other day, on lock screen, I get one of those lovely photos from Microsoft world archive. However, I not only used to get them on the Lock Screen, they were appearing on the Sign-In screen as well on the first boot-up and Sign-in, as I thought they should, as Windows Spotlight works that way (right?). And I really liked it.

But as of one update, that stopped happenning. Windows Spotlight still works fine on Lock Screen, new photos just fine, but on the sign-in screen, I keep getting the Windows 10 default backgroud photo, the beach/cave one.

Needless to say, I changed nothing in the Sign-In or Lock screen settings at all.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've already tried the "Brinx fix". Also, needless to say, I've tried resetting the Windows Spotlight back to Photo, and reboot and back countless times.
Cheers

Answer:Windows Spotlight Lock screen photo not coming up on Sign-in screen

Same here & has been happening since a CU in June, I've put it down to MS possibly breaking Spotlight with that CU or they've removed the feature.

Kind of screen glitch that appears before windows 8 lock screen appears at start /restart and a notable delay in starting/restarting time than with my 1st win8 install.

I think this appeared after I installed my windows 7 back ( dont ask me why..)( a clean install) and installed my win8 back again.I dont think Ive done them corectly:

I couldnt install win 7 it in C ,neither to format that partition because of this message [Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks] and an error code 0x0000 smth... while attempting to format the C. I could only manage to instal windows 7 back after deleting all of the partiton and now I have a single C one.

When Ive tried to reinstall windows 8 these days I expected to see only a partiton where to put my windows but instead there were other minor ones too ( they dint shown during my win7 install) like they appear now if I open disk management .

So now I have that glitch when starting windows 8. I dont know how to describe it: its a black screen -with that windows 8 doted loading wheel -partially covering my Motherboard logo screen ( that screen at startup with bios setup, boot menu options etc).I say partially becuase I can see parts of my motherboard screen on left and right but they are kinda shredded and disolved into scraps. This appears after the clean Motherboard screen witht those options I mentioned above. On my 1st win 8 inst... Read more
