How to turn on WiFi adapter from command line / How to turn on hotspot

Question: How to turn on WiFi adapter from command line / How to turn on hotspot

Hi

I have configured ad-hoc network for internet sharing from my PC. Normally I start it by
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
As I noticed the hotspot is automatically turned off when I turn off WiFi adapter. So I have two questions:

How do I turn on WiFi by command line, so that I can control it from various commandline scripts?
How do I configure the script for WiFi for autostarting hotspot whenever WiFi is turned on?

netsh wlan ...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

There is more than one way to do this but all require that you are using a certified Windows 7 driver which installs the Msoft Virtual WiFi adaptor which is used to set up the hosted wireless network.

The real problem with this is that if you already have a wireless connection then why would you need to create an Ad Hoc network in the first place?

I guess if you were somehow limited to a single connection it might come in handy, or if you needed to amplify the signal. You can't share through an Ethernet connection, it only works wireless to wireless.

You can set this up using the command prompt or you can install the connectify software which makes it easier for some. The links below explains the details about setting this up, take your pick, the last one is a download for a virtual router if that's what you wanted.

Unfinished Windows 7 Feature Turns Laptops Into Wi-Fi Hotspots

http://connectify.me/

Unfortunately I'm not at my house to try this out - but it sounds promising.

A Philadelphia developer has rooted out an unfinished feature of Windows 7 that turns any laptop into a wireless access point, allowing other Wi-Fi-enabled devices to share the connection without special software.

Nomadio, which specializes in military network consulting and development, used the new "Virtual Wi-Fi" feature in Windows 7 to create Connectify, a free application that it released as a beta last Friday.

Virtual Wi-Fi was crafted in Microsoft's research group as a way to "virtualize" one wireless card as several separate adapters. The project was discontinued in 2006, but the work made its way into Windows 7 as "Native 802.11 Virtual Wireless Fidelity (Virtual Wi-Fi) object identifiers (OIDs)" .

"A year ago, Microsoft talked a lot about this as a big feature in Windows 7," said Alex Gizis, the CEO of Nomadio. "But driver support didn't get finished. The low-level code is in there, but the driver-level stuff isn't. And there's no app or setting in Windows to turn it on."

Explaining that the feature was "half there" in Windows 7, Gizis said his company realized &... Read more

Answer:Turn Your Windows 7 Laptop Into A WIFI Hotspot

Interesting, he seems excited by being able to rip off pay for hot spots though.
"One application came immediately to mind, Gizis continued. "You're sitting in a coffee shop that charges you for a wireless connection. With Connectify, I can pay for that connection, and still have all my other devices, like my iPhone, connected to the Internet."

Poor coffee shop owner, pretty soon being paid for only a connection or two, yet 15 devices are sucking him dry.

Curious if the "clients" do any malicious surfing and pickup some exploits..what the possibility of that transferring to the ICS box would be.

I get data from my phone and want to use that data font as the source of internet for other nearby devices.

I have an intel centrino 6300N wifi adapter built into the laptop I got in late 2011, it came with windows 7 and had software on board that allowed you to create a wifi hotspot like I described using another internet connection.

After I installed windows 8 the functionality has been broken ever since, forums about the issue turn up no results, even on intels own sites. Intel seems not to give a damn about the broken functionality, I guess billions in profit is not enough to allow a couple of guys to be tasked to fix the issues in windows 8.

But whatever, now that that is written off, is there good third party software that allows similar functionality? Preferably without malware and browser hijacks that seems commonly attached to such programs.

I have a laptop from a friend who contactd Dell about an issue. The person at Dell told him to use msconfig to set safe mode minimal.

During further discussioin with the Dell rep, he told my friend he needed to do a factory restore. I've done that for my friend, not realizing he had set the flag for Safe Mode boot in MSConfig, and now the restore can't finish because it keeps trying to boot into safe mode.

Is there a way to turn this off in the command prompt. I can get to the Startup Tools of windows 7 with CTRL+F11.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. I can also get into the system files with linux to edit if needed. I just don't know what to do.

Thanks,

We are looking to initially turn-off the bluetooth function on our deployed computers unless the user specifically needs it. We have already tested two command options: Turn off Bluetooth support service and Disable Bluetooth adapter. Neither of these will
toggle the switch found in Metro's PC and Device Settings, so the device still shows as ON and confuses the user.
Can someone help us find the command line to execute that will emulate triggering this switch to Off?

I work as tech support for a 550-person residence hall, and have to deal with all of the people that don't understand the concept of patching their computer or clicking "no" instead of "yes" in IE.

Here it is, a year after Blaster, and I still get dozens of new residents with blaster, sasser, gaobot, korgo, or one of the tons of others. I know the best way would be for them to just run automatic updates for every day as well as regular visits to Windows Update, but it's not easy to tell that to 550 people.

So I'm looking for an automated solution. Something I can stick in a .cmd file that will auto-run off a CD. I need to figure out how to do the following things without having to go through a GUI interface:
1.) Turn on the Windows Firewall on the LAN interface (which I'm not sure is even possible since there may be unique keys for each computer in the registry for the LAN device?)
2.) Turn on Automatic Updates for every day at 12pm (yes, I mean 12pm. They can deal with the intrusion if it means a more secure computer).

Unfortunately, I CANNOT add a line to run the SP2 installer due to some liability crap that is a long story, so I need to do this all pre-SP2. Does anyone have any ideas?

If I can't get the firewall working through registry I'll probably force an install of a freeware firewall, and if I can't get automatic updates I'm going to look into AutoPatcherXP (I believe that is the name), but I&... Read more

Is WiFi antenna turned off if I disable WiFi adapter in "Adapter settings"?
Why Airplane mode only disconnect WiFi from network, not disable them?

Answer:Turn off WiFi adapter

Yes. The antenna connects directly to the Wireless adapter, disabling turns it off. Most Notebooks have a switch mechanism to turn the adapter off, a physical switch or an Fn plus Fx combination or just an Fx key itself.

Airplane mode is intended for temporary use when traveling by air to comply with FAA or Airline rules and make it easier to get back to Wi-Fi. Simply put Wi-Fi is a 2-way radio and as such can interfere with an airplane's instrumentation, in extreme cases lead to a crash.

My adapter is always gone from resuming from sleep. I know it was working before. Just changed my ram and bios settings from a fresh build. Went from Corsair xms3 to G.Skill Ripjaws.

I am having this same issue with my newly built pc. The drive running Windows 7 is from a laptop where the mobo died. I am using it in AHCI mode because my case has a front hot swap caddy.

I have a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 mobo and after installing and uninstalling drivers, software, changing settings, removing ram, changing power options to maximum power for pci card and wifi, turning off hibernate, restarted, rebooted, updated all drivers from Gigabyte, chipset drivers, etc. I have unchecked "allow Windows to turn off this device". Restarted and tested and I get the same issue. I have unchecked this box in all of my networking devices too including, 802.11n Wireless Lan Card #2 and Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter. Also, uninstalled and reinstalled these and updated drivers from my disc that came from Gigabyte as well as driver update from the Gigabyte website.

Nothing I do will turn on my wifi card after sleep. Windows will not see a network adapter. Everything works fine after restarting though. I have S3 enabled in bios as that is what I want. I have case fans that I don't want to hear with no option to turn them off. Otherwise, i'd be fine with S1.

Is this just not a working feature? I've read that sleep is an ongoing issue with Windows, ... Read more

I understand that an adapter can be bought for about 40 but new printers cost little more. Is there a cheaper way of converting the printer so that I can print wirelessly? Thanks.

Answer:Cannon MP272. Is there an adapter to turn into WiFi

It's a bizarre situation isn't it that you can buy a new printer for as much as replacing ink cartridges in some cases.
If you have a router you could consider installing the printer directly onto that via an ethernet cable. You will need to assign the IP address of the router (usually starts with 192.168.) to the printer and it would be available to all PC's on the home network if you have one set up.

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

Hi All

I Found This Article In A Lot Of Web Sites Around About How To Share Your Wired Connection Through Wi-Fi But Need Confirmation If Any One Tried It And Really Works With Him

* Connect the laptop to the internet using the ethernet cable.
* Open the control panel and go into the Network and Sharing Center.
* Set up a new connection called a wireless ad hoc network.
* Give it a name and setup the desired security options.
* Deselect Save this Network.
* Finally, click on Turn on Internet Connection Sharing.
* Now anyone can connect to your laptop?s Wi-Fi.

Now I Have A PC With Wired ADSL Connection And Also I Have Nokia N79 And Nokia 5800 XpressMusic And Want To Share The Connection With This Devices..

If I Bought A Wireless Network Adapter And Followed Those Steps Will It Really Work And The 2 Mobiles Phone Will Be Able To Connect To Internet Throw The Wireless Adapter ???

Hi harish,
Are you using "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Hotspotname key=password " to create the hotspot?
To troubleshoot whether the issue only occurred with the phone device, we could try to connect another device to the hotspost to have a check.
If the issue persists, we could try to reinstall the network driver and recreate the hotspot to have a check.

So, there are many articles out there that will show you how to use cmd prompt to create a wifi hotspot (eg: this article Internet Connection Sharing - Create WiFi HotSpot)

However, is there anyway to do this with TWO separate wifi adapters? That is, use one adapter to connect to your router and the other to act as the router? Some articles seem to indicate this is the ideal setup but no one seems to specify how to control which wifi adapter is used to create the wifi hostpot in command prompt.

Thanks for any help.

If I can get the basics to work, the next step is to try to integrate a VPN so that I can basically use my PC as a VPN router (but with no physical ethernet connection).

I connect my laptop to Internet using a 3G modem.
To share this connection with my cellphone and tablet, I used to do following on Windows 7:
1. run these commands in CMD as administrator:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MySSID key=MyPassword
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
2. Go to Network Connections, and right-click on the 3G connection, go to Properties -> Sharing and then check "Allow other network users ...", and choose the network of MySSID for sharing.
3. On tablet or cellphone connect to MySSID.
On Windows 10, I repeat the same procedure. The tablet/cellphone can connect to MySSID, but Internet is not shared with them. So I can't browse web on tablet/cellphone.
Does Windows 10 require an extra action/step ?

The Connectify application will turn your Windows 7 laptop into a WiFi Hotspot to share the Internet with friends, co-workers, and mobile devices.
Connectify is running in the Notification Tray next to the system clock. It might not be visible, because Windows 7 has cleaned up the Notification Tray to hide the icons that you don't frequently use. If you click on the small white triangle it will show all of the icons, including the Connectify radio wave icon.
When it is run in "Access Point" mode, Connectify is a real WiFi Access Point running on your computer. Any device that can connect to a regular access point, can connect to a Connectify Hotspot, with no special setup or software required. hi field88,

AFAIK, you can't turn ON/OFF the wireless capability on the command prompt (type netsh wlan set to see the commands that you can do) but you may try the trick below on how to fix a broken wifi switch.

Broken Wireless Hardware Switch Fix

When you toggle the physical wifi switch, it disabled a certain pin on the wireless card that disables the wifi capability (same thing as pressing Fn+F5). The trick requires you to put a small amount of tape on pin #13 of the WLAN card so that the system will see the wireless device as "Enabled / ON".

Working on the assumption you want to disable all DCC sends and receives:

Open mIRC, go to mIRC Options (second button from the left), click on the plus sign to the left of "DCC" in the left-hand column.

With "DCC" highlighted on the left, you should now see two places to check to ignore...one for Send requests and one for Chat requests. If you want to ignore them, click them both to put a check in the box.

If, however, you want to be notified of any attempts to DCC to you, click on the "Show get dialog" in both categories ("On send request" and "On Chat request.") With those two checked, anytime somebody tries to send you a file or initiate a DCC chat session, a box will pop up asking you if you want to accept or decline.

You might also want to click on "Server" in the left hand pane and then in the right-hand pane, make sure "Enable DCC server" is unchecked.

After making any changes, be sure to click on OK to close the window so all changes will be saved.

I want to hide this. I'm running a python progam (if that matters) and it always has that open on my taskbar. I want to hide it. I don't care where it goes or how much time it takes, I just want to hide it. So I never have to deal with it. Maybe make it a system process or something? I don't know.

hi folks,

I'm currently running Windows XP SP3 on a netbook which is connected via WiFi to the internet. One of the executable programs I use require the netbook to be offline before it can load properly.

What I wanted to know was, is it possible I can write a command line prompt that will automatically kick in when the executable runs. The prompt would disconnect the WiFi, allowing the program to boot offline without having to manually disconnect everytime.

Thanks in advance for reading the post

Answer:writing command line prompt: no wifi when opening executable

Hi

For more information you can read this document Enable/Disable Wireless Card from Command Line

First you have to download devcon.
Unzip it and copy the unzipped devcon.exe file to c:\windows\system32

Then create a file in notepad, copy the code below and paste it into the file. save it to your desktop as something like myprogram.bat:

Code:
devcon disable *DEV_001C*
program.exe
devcon enable *DEV_001C*
The device ID (DEV_001C) is found in your dxdiag.txt file that you attached and is the device ID of your Wireless card.
Program.exe is the name of the executable program that you want to run - change it to the name of your program's file name.
The batch file will disable the wireless card, then run the program. Once you exit the program the wireless card will be enabled again.

Or else

Code:
devcon disable *DEV_001C*
start program.exe
devcon enable *DEV_001C*
This batch file will disable the wireless card, Start the program and then enable the wireless card regardless of whether you are still in the program or not.

Note Devcon is a very powerful tool and you will have to be logged in as an administrator to run it.

Hi everyone

I am trying to find a way of toggling the wifi radio on and off using command line? The same goes for the airplane mode.

I already know that netsh can disable the adapter but thats not what I want. I want to just disable/enable the radio for the adapter. Windows 10 has the buttons on the interface called where you can turn wifi off or enable airplane mode.

The laptop hardware switch when enabled does the same therefore there must be a call made from the hardware to the OS for this. Just can't find what it is.

Please help.

Answer:Toggle Wifi Radio or Airplane mode via command line?

Ideas here:
networking - Enable/disable wireless interface in a bat file - Super User

Maybe you will be able to find sthg you can use there.

Here's an annoying glitch I hope someone can help. Whilst typing in MS Word 2002, upon entering a new paragraph, the new line automatically has a indentation 'Special - first line 0.08"'
I've tried:
Format>paragraph> and then turning it off.
Format>Styles and formatting> right clicking 'First line: 0.08" and choosing 'delete.'
Deleting the Normal.dot and creating a new Normal.dot with NO special formats. The problem of the 'Special - first line 0.08"' persists.

If anyone could offer any suggestions of how to fix this, I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks in advance.

Stephen.

Hi, I have a Gateway NV52L15 notebook and I am having problems with my WiFi access. I have Windows 8. My wireless networks are not showing up. When I troubleshoot the network adapter, I get a messAge that reads that my wireless capability is turned off. When I go to the Gateway Device fast lane, my WiFi is on. But when I look in networks it as shows WiFi off and I am unable to turn it on that way. When I go to wireless devices in pc settings, the toggle button for the wire device is grey, therefore I am unable to switch it on- It used to work.

Also, while in the Gateway Device fast lane, when I press the F3 key the airplane mode goes on...the WiFi goes off...by comes right back on. Please help...

Hi all,

I also have this posted over at the MS Windows XP newsgroups, but not much luck there so far.

Not an urgent problem by any means, just an academic question/loose end to tie up.

I have two scheduled tasks for power management purposes: One to have wizmo force the computer to standby at 10 pm, the other to start Internet Explorer at 6:15 am to wake the computer from standby.

Both tasks work fine, but upon wakeup, the monitor doesn't turn on. I have to move the mouse to wake up the monitor.

Obviously, since I have to move the mouse anyway, this isn't really a problem at all. It's more of a discussion question/exercise in Windows management:

Is there a command I can run at the command line to force the monitor to turn on? That way I could put the IE startup and the monitor turn-on command in a batch file and run that at 6:15. If not, is there some setting somewhere that will ensure the monitor wakes up when the computer does?

One person at the XP newsgroups suggested scheduling another task after the IE start/computer wakeup task, such as a command line ping to localhost. I did try this but no luck; the monitor still refused to turn on when I ran the ping cmd file as a scheduled task.

Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Answer:Command Or Setting To Force Monitor To Turn On?

Short of leaving the monitor on all the time, I don't believe that Windows has this ability. Maybe a driver for the monitor would have this feature (I don't know as I don't use any special monitor drivers)?

Ok, this is so screwed up you just won't believe it.

I had a problem that I won't go into now but I got to the point where I decided the only recourse was to re-install XP. After the install, it told me I needed to register before I could log in. Ok, fine. So I hit OK and it crashes. I figured out that it would let me log in if I booted into safe mode. At some point I set msconfig to automatically boot into safe mode. Now when it boots into safe mode I get the message requireing me to register, but then I get a message saying I can't register when in safe mode. But until I log in, I can't set msconfig to boot normally. So I'm stuck. Where do I find the ini or whatever file that is booting it into safe mode?

Answer:How to turn off safe mode in a command prompt

well, if you can enter safe mode - go to run -> msconfig -> boot.ini -> and uncheck boot in safe mode.

You only need to activate windows, registring is optional.

I have a client that has a t60 and whenever he needs to use it he has to remove the battery plug it back in power up the laptop then plug in the adapter. Took me forever to run across a post with my exact same issue and was wondering if the OP ever tracked down root cause.  Same issue here - have fairly new Lenovo 9 -cell battery and also a 2 year old battery and have tried 3 different 90W adapters with same results.  I experience this issues after long periods of non-use time with the adapter plugged in and laptop in standy/sleep mode or hibernate.  So tyically, this will be next morning.  I've had this issue with battery only and no AC connected.  I come up to my T60 in morning and see the power, bat, and standby/sleep lights on, press the power button, lights blink and then everything shuts down.  From then on, pressing the power button has zero effect.  I found that only way to start the laptop back up is to pull AC power, pull battery, press power button for 10 sec or more, then re-insert battery only, power up laptop, then re-insert AC.  Laptop will not power up with AC/Bat combo or AC only - it will shutdown and I have to reset using above process to get it going again.  There are no beeps associated with this issue. To troubleshoot a glitch in my XP OS, progs, and registry, I recently started with new HD and performed a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate.  Balanced Power Profile was setup as default, which has Hibernate set for 360 min. as default.  The very next morning, I pressed the power button and laptop shutdown.  Had to use sa... I cannot turn the wifi on. It says that Ethernet cable is not connected. But I was using only wifi. When I check network adapters, there is only one displayed for Ethernet, not for wifi. one time it got fixed by itself when I restarted it for maybe 4 times. but then when my pc went to sleep and tried to switch it on, it was the same problem. no wifi, no wifi adapter to switch on.

Answer:i cannot turn on my wifi, i cannot find wifi adapt

Maybe check in device manager in case it has been switched off on there or maybe try updating the driver for it or rolling it back if that does not work. If not working properly it should show a yellow exclamation mark.

You may have the action keys disabled in the BIOS. Try tapping the F12 key without the Fn key. When looking in the Device Manager for the wireless adapter you should expand the network adapter section. And there won't be LED charging status.I have to take off AC adapter and battery for about 3 minutes, then it can be turned on normally using battery.- But if I plug in AC adapter while the computer is turning on, then I shut down Windows, I still can turn it on with no problem (as long as AC adapter was not removed).- If I unplug AC adapter while the computer turned off, it also cannot be turned on. hi,

Okay so I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. It's pretty old as I got it in 2009, and yes the battery is shot to hell. But it has worked in this condition.

The problem is I can't get the adapter to turn on to get my computer powered on. To my knowledge, there's no shortage or exposed wires on it. I can even post a picture if you would like.

Before people also tell me to get a new laptop, I'm broke. This is my only option for now. And as stated earlier, it has worked in this condition before. The LED on the adapter won't even turn on when I keep trying to plug it into different power sources.

If anyone can help with this it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!!!

I have a mac 2013(early) running win10 (obviously). I have my TV with a auxiliary port. I want to know if it is possible to use some software to turn my laptop into an adapter between my Bluetooth headphones and the TV. I have heard that if the volume is too loud from the TV going into a auxiliary port, it could fry something. I feel like this is something that could be doable, and software exists. But I cannot find any, and I really want to use my Bluetooth headphones so no one can hear my TV when playing games and such.

Answer:software to turn mac into bluetooth adapter?

If you are using the tv as an external monitor as well as for watching broadcasts you would simply mute that if not Bluetooth capable and then use either the head phone jack on the laptop itself or see the Bluetooth app configure the head set there not through the tv. Does the headset happen to have a usb dongle by chance?

On a quick Bing search for looking a guide for seeing Bluetooth installed on 10 you will also find instructions on how to see Bluetooth already present and accounted for enabled on 10 rather easily. The following was quickly found from the Help From Microsoft pages in the Bing search results itself with an embedded video short.

To connect your Bluetooth headset, speaker, or headphones to your Windows 10 PC, you'll need to pair the device first.

Turn on your Bluetooth device and make it discoverable. The way you make it discoverable depends on the device. Check the device info or website to find out more.On the taskbar, select the action center icon, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.In action center, select Connect, then pick your device.Follow any additional instructions. Otherwise, you're done.

I've had my T410 for about eight months, and have never had any problems with wireless connectivity before. Now the wireless adapter won't turn on. I'm on Windows 7. These are the symptoms: In the fn-F5 menu, the hardware wireless radio switch is reflected as "on". The 802.11 wireless radio shows "off". When I click to turn it on, the application looks like it's doing something for a few seconds, but the radio does not turn on. No errors are reported. Both the mobile broadband adapter and Bluetooth turn on fine.If I try to use Access Connections to connect to a pre-existing profile, it tells me it's powering on the wireless adapter, and then proceeds with the connection. However, the association fails, and it doesn't appear as if the wireless adapter is in fact turned on.The ThinkVantage Toolbox shows the wireless adapter as disabled at the hardware level. All Windows diagnostic tools reflect that the hardware radio is off.I've read a number of threads on this, and have tried all of the following: Uninstalling Access Connections, the drivers for the wireless adapter, all power management utilities, the on-screen display and the on-screen magnifier; and then reinstalling them. I also included the GPS, the mobile broadband, and anything else I figured could be remotely related to the wireless adapter's functioning, just for good measure.Changing the power settings to prevent the computer from turning off the wireless adapter when not in use (this includes the setting i... Hi, my laptop (HP ProBook 450 G0) won't turn on without the AC adapter although the battery is charged (97%). When the adapter isn't plugged in, the adapter/battery LED (on the left side of the laptop) is flashing really fast (like 20times per sec). When I press the power button, nothing happens. When the adapter is plugged in, I can turn the laptop on. The adapter/battery LED is off, Windows say "plugged in, not charging". I ran battery test and system hardware test and everything's OK. I tried hard reset (pressing power button 30 sec) and it didn't help. Any advice? Thanks in advance

I have an older acer laptop 7250 series. No matter what I do I can't get the wifi on. "Fn+f3" does not work. Manually it will not turn on. When I'm in the network setting I will click it to on but it shows that it will not turn on and stay on the off side. The driver is correctly installed and says it is working properly....any suggestions?

Answer:Wifi will not turn on

Are you running Windows 10 on this laptop? I had some issues with Network Drivers with Windows 10 that state they work as in no complaints in Device Manager yet the driver clearly doesn't work. My fix for my friend with an older laptop that is running Windows 10 was to buy a new USB Wireless Adapter as for the Wireless Chipset in his laptop ended support at Windows 7 and the Windows 7 driver doesnt work under Windows 10.... Oddly enough though upon first install of 10 it worked ok, and then there were some updates and the update targeted the wireless adapter driver. He can boot his laptop on Linux and Wireless works no problems on the internal wireless that came with the laptop, so its an issue with Windows 10 stomping on his wireless driver with one that doesnt play well with the chipset. If your not running Windows 10, I would suggest getting a modern Linux Distro on a USB stick or DVD and boot off of that and see if you can connect wireless through Linux. If it works through Linux but not Windows then you know its a driver issue. If it doesnt work under Linux then the radio might have died in that wireless adapter in which the cheapest and easiest solution is to add a USB Wireless Network Adapter that supports your OS. They are around $15 each after shipping. I have an EDMAX that works flawless for my friends laptop and I also used it to make an older laptop that never came with wireless a Pentium 3 800Mhz Dell Laptop I was able to get Wireless on with this USB NIC run... My internet connection goes off regularly. To solve this issue I try turning my wifi off, leaving it for a few seconds and turning it back on. However, it takes me more than 15 times to try and get the WiFi back on. I turn the flight mode on and off to jump start it and it doesn't work. I try to turn my wifi box on and off and it doest work. I restart my laptop and that doesnt help. I've looked online and couldn't find the answer hence why I've resulted to come here. I'm to the point where I want to return my laptop and never use hp again due to the level of frustration! Help please?

Question: Can't turn on wifi

When I hibernate with wifi on, later connect with dial up, hibernate, then want to use wifi, it says there is no wifi card. Reboot fixes. Does anyone know a way to tell my N100 that it does have a wifi card? tOM

Answer:Can't turn on wifi

Well, I have found that if I turn off wifi with the hardware switch BEFORE hibernation, then wifi will reappear when I dehibernate(?) and then turn the switch on. Still, wifi shouldn't disappear completely, requiring a reboot, if one doesn't follow this procedure!  (Yeah, yeah, blame microsoft....) tOM

I did a clean install of windows 7 on an L512 I bought with no operating system on it. I installed various drivers but so far I cannot get the wifi to turn on with the function switch as it should. This seems to not be an uncommon problem and it seems to be about the drivers but I can't figure out what driver could be missing...

Question: Wifi won't turn on

Hi,So I've had my Lenovo Ideapad Y400 for about 3 years now, and I haven't had an issue with it. Until now. Randomly, when I was watching Netflix one night, the Wifi turned off (its got the wifi symbol with a red X through it). Ok, no biggie. I open up the Wifi settings to turn it back on, and it doesn't even have the option of turning on the wifi. I go to SETTINGS --> Network and Internet and it doesn't have the Wireless connection panel on the side to even chose from. Right now, it just has: Airplane mode, data usage, VPN, Dial-up, Ethernet, and Proxy. So then I figured I'd try to turn on the Airplane mode on then off again. Didn't work, same options show up. So I try to boot up the laptop in the Setup Utility mode (F2 + power button) and see if the Wifi is enabled. Turns out it is enabled, but I still switched it off then back on to humor myself. Stil doesn't work.  Any suggestions? I've got classes next week, and it wouldn't be ideal to start the new semester with a laptop that can't utilize wifi. Also, I'm working with an Ideapad Y400 with 64-bit Windows 10. Thanks.

Answer:Wifi won't turn on

Hi Kentuckyfan341, There are things that you can try and we need to isolate first what is happening on your computer. Since it has Red X on the network icon, most likely it is a driver issue.? Go to device manager > Network Adapters > Look for the wireless network adapter.? If it is listed, for sure it has a bang (error). Note the error code and the error message. (Code 45, Code 10, etc), If the wireless network adapter is NOT listed, go to View > Show Hidden Devices > Look again on device manager and now look for the wireless adapter. Note the error code and the error message.? If in your case. the adapter is grayed out, has Code 45 - Currently this device is not connected. Try this. - Shutdown > Remove battery > Press Power button for 20 secs > Reinstall Battery - Press F1 to enter BIOS when you power on Lenovo laptop, and then press F9 to restore CMOS to factory default settings. Press F10 to save and access BIOS screen again. Choose ?LOAD BIOS DEFAULTS?? If wireless is working again, you MUST do this.? If wireless adapter is detected but has error aside from Code 45, I highly recommend for you to uninstall/reinstall driver. ? If in case above steps are not applicable, then post the error here so we can help out.  Hope this helps.

I'm still getting used to my new Y410P. It has an Ethernet connection to my router and also a WIFI connection. I would like to be able to control when it connects using WIFI. I've tried Fn+F5 to put it in airplane mode, but the WIFI still connects.  I know I can disable the Centrino adapter from Device Manager, but that's pretty clumsy if I want to switch back and forth. Is there some good way to turn the WIFI on and off? TIA, josh

Answer:How to turn off WiFI

Are you still running WIndows 8 or have you "downgraded" to Win 7 already?

If Win 8, try here:

Bring up Settings charm. At the bottom it says "Change PC Settings". That looks like the title of the settings above (to me) but it's a link. Click it. Then click "wireless" on the left.  There should be a wifi slider there.
