Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

Question: Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I have my Public Desktop folder set to share for everyone, so it can be accessed from other pc's on the home network. But when I move a file from my user desktop to the public desktop it suddenly adds the lock icon over it and can't be accessed from another pc, even though the public desktop still can. I have to change the permissions on the file every time, although this never used to be the case. I used to be able to move a file to the public desktop without having to manually "share" it each time.

All settings look correct: Sharing is enabled for the folder and set for full control "everyone", and public folder sharing is turned on.

Again, this just started and was working fine before. Would one of the recent security patches have changed something?

Preferred Solution: Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I'm not sure how this could occur but in order for the Public folders to be shared you need to enable sharing through the Sharing tab of the main Public folder, otherwise anything placed in one of it's subfolders won't be sharable.

If the share is being moved from a folder with a lock then moving that folder to a Public folder won't remove the lock.

The main Public folder is located at the C:\Users\Public and should appear like the picture.

I have two network cards in my PC. One of them connects to the internet while the other connects to my home network.

The issue is enabling public folders for the home network in "Network and Sharing Center" enables public folders for the public network also. In other words Windows grants permission to people on the internet to access my c:\users\Public folder.

Disabling public folders under public network settings disables public folders for the home network also, preventing people on my local area network from accessing my PC.

Refer this screenshot if you don't get my problem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/6878074832/

In other words Windows grants permission to people on the internet to access my c:\users\Public folder.

Answer:Cannot turn off "Public Folder Sharing" for public network

I think it's because you set up a Public Network as your first interface. Because of this it may not be possible to turn off the Public file sharing option.

You don't need to use both interfaces to share the wireless connection with your wife. You can do that with a single interface by just setting up a Home Network on one of the interfaces then sharing out from that interface using software to make it easier like Connectify.

This is like some terrorist thing or something...FBI is gonna find me and I'll never see the light of day again!!! I'll miss the [H] and I haven't even watched LOTR Extended Platinum Collectors DVD thing (the big ass package with those book holder things)...I haven't even completed Doom 3 or started playing HL2 or even had a chance to buy an X-Box and play Halo 2!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!! WTF is this crap on my computer??? I'm gonna delete this...I should delete it right??? Scans say it isn't a virus but what do they know...I'm screwed...

We are a small company.  We are running six windows 8 computers.  Our secretary works from home, the rest of us are in the same office.

The Admin Computer stores all of our work files within a folder called 'casework' (about 400GB).   The 'casework' folder is shared on the office network.  This 'casework' folder is also synced by Google Drive.

When our secretary works on her home computer and makes a new file, e.g. letterV2, the new file downloads to our 'casework' folder to the Admin Computer here at the office.  However, the new file cannot been seen on our other computers over the office
network.

The newly created files are not shared to 'everyone' unless I un-share 'casework' from the network and then share 'casework' again.

The problem seems to be that the new files added by Google Drive are not inheriting the permissions of the 'casework' folder.

There are no options to change in Google Drive.  Is this a Windows8 problem? Will Windows10 have a fix for this? Are there any work arounds? Does our secretary need to work at the office?

Yours Hopefully

Matt

Answer:New files downloaded from cloud storage into shared folders don't inherit shared permissions for "Everyone"

may I know how that work case folder sync with google drive?

I suggest you contact Google drive first, we have limitation information regarding this product.

You can proof that there is no issue for sharing folder within your office network
I think that's not how online share drive work, unless your secretary can join your office network trough internet
http://www.howtogeek.com/196435/how-to-share-files-and-folders-from-your-cloud-storage-folder/
this is the example, you can ask your secretary to send file trough share drive and assign 1 admin to sync and send it to your case work folder

Hi,

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Aster, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it.

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

Somehow my "Shared Documents" Folder got renamed to "Documents" when setting up my wireless network. Now when I am unable to install some software because that file name is missing.
I am not able to rename the "Documents" folder because I get the error that it is a system folder and cannot be renamed. Please help.

Answer:Unable To Rename "Documents" Folder To Original Name "Shared Documents"

You can change the share name over the network. My machine does the same thing.

When you click 'Share this Folder over the network' you are given the option to name the share. It will warn you that if it is over 12 chars, then older machines on the network may not be able to see it etc etc. Ok this and then check that the shared documents folder appears as such on the machine you wish to access with.

Bear in mind you folder will be showing in your 'Network Folders' as 'Documents on {computername} ({computername}). Can you not just point to this folder on the second machine instead?

Well, it's been a long morning. I started out with a simple install of Photoshop CS2 and found that the Adobe Installer wouldn't work. After trying to install it manually, found that it couldn't access an Adobe PDF folder in "Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents", access was denied.

Curiously, I wondered by the folder was named "Documents" instead of "Shared Documents" and tried to access it with a double click. I received the message "... is not accessible. Access is denied"

Many of the Google threads suggest changing the security access level of the Documents folder but I can't even access the folder - with the further puzzlement of why it's named "Documents" instead of "Shared Documents"

I do remember that I used to have a folder named "Shared Documents" when I clicked on "My Computer" but now I just have one named "Documents" along with my own folder of "Rob's Documents" I could have inadvertently deleted or impacted it myself when I tried to set up a network several months ago (unsuccessfully).

So what I am requesting help with is:
- How to restore a Shared Document's folder in My Computer
- How to restore access to either the new "Shared Documents" or at least to the present "Documents" folder where I now get access denied.

My system:
XP Home with all the updates off the Microsoft site

Answer:"Shared Documents" folder renamed to "Documents" and no long accessible

Found the fix!!

After following the procedure below not only was I able to install the Adobe Installer (and now Photoshop updates automatically) but the Documents folder in All Users was renamed automatically to Shared Documents when I restarted my computer after the procedure.

Old name: Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
New name after fix: Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents

Additionally, I can now access the renamed Shared Documents folder and furthermore, can access all the folders below it.

The procedure was originally published by Adobe to fix the updater not installing problem and applies to XP Home but it apparently will also reinstitute the Shared Documents folder too! Note that the security tab is NOT visible in XP Home unless you are in Safe Mode.

Start computer in SAFE mode (F8)
Log into Administrator account
Browse to My Computer -> C: -> Documents and Settings
Right click on All Users
Select Properties
Select the Security tab
Click on Advanced
Highlight Administrators
Check only "Replace permissions..."
Click on Apply
Click on OK
Exit out and reboot normally
Put in Photoshop CS2 disk
When menu starts, select Explore CD Contents
Open Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) CS2 folder
Open commonfilesinstaller
Double click "Adobe Common File Installer.msi"
And follow the prompts from there

Hi there,

I am trying to turn a public folder that i've created in system manger on exchange into an appointment calendar using IPM.appointment (a standard form).

However, when i try and do this it tells me "you cannot create an item of this type in this folder".

Can you tell me how to apply this to the folder. I have all the relevant permissions etc.

Although it might be worth saying that I already have a public calendar? but need this second one for a conference room.

I think im just missing something simple..... but havent needed to do this before.

When I look at my Public folder on Windows Vista using the Windows Explorer utility, the files there show up only in Pictures view. I.e., most annoyingly, there is no column showing when the files were modified. There is only a "Date Taken" column, which applies only to photos.

Is it possible to change the view, and if so, how? The files I'm talking about are not in any of the prenamed folders in the Public folder (Public Pictures, Public Videos, etc.); they are just in the folder.

Thanks!

Jacqui

Answer:Eliminate "Pictures" view for Public folder?

Hello Jacqui, and welcome to Vista Forums.

If you just wanted to change the folder view for that specific folder, then you could click on View (menu bar) and Details to have columns as you have. If you just wanted to add another column (ex: Date modifed), then you could use the tutorial below for how to do so.
Column - CustomizeIf you would prefer to just have the same folder template for this specific folder like normal files, then the tutorial below can help show you how to change the folder's template to All items.

HI, first of all, I found out that my home computer was infected by the lovelorn worm. Plan to clean that tonight.

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Thanks!!!

I hope I figure out W7 soon...

I upgraded my wife's office to twp HP W7 systems this past fall, wireless networked through belkin router. Old files used to be on wife's PC now in folder called "H Docs (old PC)" in her public folder. Shared to everybody. This was working up to yesterday.

Today, on the second PC, her associate opened a folder nested in the main "H Docs (old PC)" folder. Everything appeared to be there. She needed to get a phone number from another file located somewhere else, so she closed the folder while she got it. Came back to the folder - opened it - "this folder appears to be empty" or like that. Closed the folder and opened another - also empty. Back a couple of folders out, selects another folder, opens it and every thing's there. Closed completely out, rebooted - the same. Calls me in.

I go through much the same, checking paths, checking whether access has been changed - can't find a reason for this. Checked the folder on wife's PC to be sure there's anything there to share - it's all there, thank goodness.

I'm not at her office now, so can't answer much more about exact conditions, but would appreciate a nudge in the right direction. We're not using "home group" for this. On the left side of the explorer window, I go to network and chase down the path to the folder. If I logon with my admin account, I got an access denied once, got through to the folders in q... On both 64Bit & 32Bit Win7 machines I get an error message, denying access to a file in a folder within another folder. All have been shared, permissions granted & drives mapped to each folder. That is in addition to initially applying the changes to the file folder, subfolders, and files.

The message comes after the Client machine accesses the program, and attempts to generate a pdf.

The 64 is Win7-Win7 connection, while the 32 is connected to an XP.
Initially, I thought it to be a 64 issue. However, now it seems to be a Win7.
I have set to the Program to Run As Administrator & changed the Compatibility to XP Service Pack 3 to no avail.

I am moments away from Control+Alt+45ACP.

So I bit the bullet and "upgraded" my laptop from Windows 7 to 10. I expected to find a few things that didn't work anymore, but not so soon as this. I keep it in sync with my desktop PC (running XP) by net-sharing its hard drive, with permission for full control granted to its "administrators" group. I mount it on my desktop PC, where I have the same username and password for my primary administrator account. When it ran Windows 7 this all worked well, but now whenever I try to list or open its files I get "Access is denied." Any ideas?

Interestingly, I still can access the hard drive on my desktop PC while sitting at my laptop. It is only the vice-versa that fails, accessing the hard drive on my laptop PC while sitting at my desktop.

On my laptop, Windows Firewall is "off" for private networks, and it considers my home network to be "private."

From the XP PC, if you open a CMD or Run box and type in \\win10pcname\users\
what do yo get ?
If nothing helpful, create a second user in XP, logon to it
and have the win 10 laptop prompt you for credentials when you retry.

Hi all,

I'm having a weird issue with one computer here.
The "My Documents" folder is redirected to a shared network drive. Other people can access the files in that folder and edit them.

The weird thing is that the "local copy" of the file does not seem to match the one the other users on the network can see.

For example, I have this Excel spreadsheet. Another user on the network made a change to the file. In my documents, the file size and modification date do not match the new state, and if I open the file, it does not contain the changes. Everybody else on the network sees the changes just fine.

If I make changes to the file, the others cannot see them, however they do see ".tmp" files, which I don't see on my machine.

I have turned offline availability off, to try and make sure there is no local cache of the file, I have tried "sync-ing" the folder, restarted my machine... all to no avail
Seems to me there is a different copy somewhere but I can't find it.

There is no "My Documents" folder left under "c:\Users\<MyUsername>\". We are on a workgroup (as opposed to a domain).

Any pointers welcome!

Thanks,

Bourgui

Tried everything I can think of... cancelling and resetting the folder to share, adding another folder..., nothing.
Why doesn't my the shared folder appear in the "My Network Places" folder? Any suggestions?

I used to share folders without problems on this W7SP1Ult64 with an XP32Pro machine.
Not anymore.
I can't imagine why. All I did recently was swapping a slowly failing (not system) 1TB HDD for a 2TB HDD. Then I played around with partition letters.
Now no matter what I do, no matter where: Your folder can't be shared.

I tried everything shown in: Your Folder Can't Be Shared Error Message in Windows 7 - YouTube
Actually, I didn't have to do anything except for: I believe DHCP Client (maybe one of the others listed) was on manual, so I switched it to automatic.
Your folder can't be shared.
I did not install a virtual machine nor am I aware of doing so in the past.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I am trying to access files in a shared folder on my Vista PC from my XP laptop, through my wireless home network, but when I go to open a file (e.g., Word Document) it opens as "Read-Only". I noticed the shared folder on the Vista PC has the "read-only" attribute selected on its properties. I've tried unselecting the attribute, but it reverts to "read-only" every time I do this. The folder I'm sharing is the "Documents" folder on the Vista PC. All of the files I want to access from the XP laptop are in this folder and I don't want to bother with moving them to the "Public" folder in Vista.

Is it even possible to do what I'm trying to do? That is, access files on the Vista PC from the XP laptop through a wireless home network, and be able to make changes to the documents so they save on the Vista PC?

I have followed several step-by-step guides on file, folder, and printer sharing in Vista, and have changed all the permissions to make sure I'm able to access the shared folder from the XP laptop. I've changed the firewall settings on Norton 360, but that hasn't helped either. I've also installed the LLTD responder hotfix on the XP.

Both computers belong to the same workgroup and the network is set to "Private".

Well, now I want to un-share(or delete the "New My Documents" folder) but I cannot because I get an error saying 'is a Windows system folded and Windows requires it to run properly'. The thing is, the New and original My Documents folders are mirrors, meaning if I delete something from one, it deletes it from the other.

I cannot un-check the sharing box, or anything like that.

Both computers are connected to the Homegroup and are seen on my network with no problems finding them.

Now every time I click on the folder that is on the laptop from my Desktop it gives me this error:

I have read around and see that I need to edit my permissions and I have done so for my laptop and I have given my PC full control over the folder but I just doesn't connect and gives the error every time.

The only folder on my Laptop I can access from my PC is the "Users" folder...

I don't know why this keeps happening and I'm going crazy here trying to figure it out.

Please, any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: I GOT IT! for some reason the permisson "Everyone" wasn't included in the folders I wanted to join... My life is complete now

Answer:"You do not have permission to access shared folder" PLEASE HELP!

Good job! Thanks for letting us know.

Hello everybody!

Have anyone of you guys tried to shared a folder with windows 7 ? , have you noticed that the "two lil persons" (it used to be a hand before) icon that was added to the folder when you complete the sharing process doesn't come up?

it's very annoying for me because If I have 50 folders I cannot visualize which one has been shared at a glance.

the thing that scares me the most is that is the final version or maybe the activation process broke up some resources, I will try sharing a folder without activating it.

Thanks everybody

Answer:Shared Folder "two little persons" icon

You have to click the folder icon and it shows you the two people at the bottom of the window. I guess you know that though.
You can change the icon for the folder manually, not ideal though.
I hope someone does come up with a way to get the icon to change automatically.

If you go in to network and select your PC it does show you all the shared folders. Maybe that will help if you are going to change the icons.

I recently found a "Shared" folder in MY DOWNLOADS folder which blinks between being selectable and dissapering. When I manage to double click it, it shows an innumberable number of zip folder for all kinds of programs and files that you can imagine. I obviously did not put this there.

Also, my P2P program (bearshare) started turning itself on randomly, and would perpetually turn back on once exited.

I have ran virus scans (avast antivirus), spyware scans (spybot S&D) and deleted all of the files inside of the MY DOWNLOADS folder. I've even managed to delete the "Shared" folder and empty recycle bin but it always comes back.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be or how to get rid of it? If not do you know anywhere that would? All help is appreciated!

I have lost all the contents of "My Documents".

1) In preparation for getting a new laptop, I "moved" the entire contents of "My Documents", including the directory, to a server directory.
2) Seeing the contents of "My Documents" on C: were still there, I looked at the server directory to verify that all files were at least copied.
3) I then deleted the "My Documents" directory on C:. Then I thought that was odd. I again looked at the server directory and to my horror all files that were "moved" had been deleted as well. No files are in the waste basket either!
4) A recover program has been run on my C: drive. The program can not find any files to restore from a "My Documents" directory.

Any hope?

Answer:"My Documents" folder moved and lost

That sould be recoverable to some extent if you have the right utilities.

This is a good thread as you should copy rather than move, verify after the transfer, then delete!

Moving and deleting over a server is different than on a laptop or workstation. There is no recycle bin in some cases.

User opens a document \\region-fs1.company.local\share\Public\Engineering\Part-8513\document.doc, makes some modifications, saves and completely closes the file.

User attempts to cut and paste folder Part-8513 to a folder on Desktop but receives a message saying the the folder or files are in use/currently open/locked, offering the options Try Again or Cancel.

I login to region-fs1.company.local Windows 2012 file server, go to Computer Management, and check Open Sessions under Shares filtering for the full path. I discover that there are ZERO open files or sessions to either the parent folder Part-8513 or files contained inside this directory.

User is able to move/rename/delete all files inside parent folder, but not the parent folder itself (which triggers that in use message with the Try Again and Cancel buttons to pop-up).

User tells me that this only happens when they open a document that they are unable to move or rename the parent folder after closing the document, and that this doesn't "reset" until a day later. If they don't open any document, they can freely move folders around. User has many folders he needs to open and verify documents before moving or renaming the parent folder.

Ideas? User is using a Windows 7 Professional workstation. File server runs Windows Server 2012 Standard.

Answer:User opens+modifies+saves+closes document, parent folder locked/"in use", no sessions

I ran into something close to this, a user would try to move folders after moving 2 or 3 she wouldn't be able to cause the files were in use, but no one was using them. I was able to fix this by checking always show icons, never thumbnails, in folder options. she never had the problem afterwards.
what I found out is this, when you click copy the thumbnail cache or thumbs.db file is created. once the always show icons, never thumbnails was checked it stopped using the thumbs.db file to cache the file. thus fixing my issue. please try that and see if that fixes your issue.

Please, I somehow have the C: drive locked when I am in administrator, at least when I try to open the C: it asks what program I want to open it. It also won't let me do things like change the folder view so that all hidden files are revealed or get into system files. It is the only administrator account on the system, and I can't figure out what else has control or how to change back whatever I originally must have done to get this way. There was some spyware that ad-aware took care of but I can't get this fixed. I can get into the folders on the C: drive through the "folders" setting on the toolbar but all is in read-only and I can't do anything to any folders or files.

Hey,

I run Windows Vista, and have two 520GB hard drives in my PC. In the other room i like to use my Xbox and PS3 to watch videos on my PC. However, these devices can only pick up video/music content that is kept in the "Public" folders which were set up on my PC as standard, e.g. Public Pictures, Public Video etc.

However, I am now at the limit of this folder on one of the 520GB drives. I have tried setting up a similar folder on the other drive, and (to the best of my knowledge) copied the permissions of the Public folders exactly.

I am assuming there must be some sort of media server software out there which would allow me to manage shared media folders across multiple devices, e.g. PS3, Xbox.

All suggestions welcome,
Cheers

I have three computers (all Dell) networked via Microsoft's Home Network. All computers are running XP SP3 and I have updated each computer.

One of the computers is my work laptop. I typically "backup" my work files to my main computer on the network, using the "shared folder" of the main computer. For some reason, whenever I try to access the main computers "shared folder," I now get a request for a password. This appeared to happen spontaneously as I have never had this problem before.

I do not have the user accounts password protected. I have tried every password I have ever used, to no avail. This is *NOT* a problem of "forgotten" password but Windows XP suddenly asking for a password when I have never assigned one before.

I can access my laptops "shared folder" across the network with the other computers without a problem. The only problem is trying to access my main computer's shared folder, which results in the request for a password. The User name is greyed out, with the name of the main computer in the user name followed by a forward slash "/guest" and then a box for a password to be entered.

I have simple file share checked and have never changed that setting. I have run and rerun the Network Wizard on all computers without success. I have tried assigning passwords and using them, without luck.

One clue is on the main computer I am trying to access, I used to have two user acc... Read more

Ok this is a problem i just noticed, have no idea how long it's been happening. But I noticed it when I was downloading a program off bittorrent, but the torrent was dead so i closed it. Then went to delete the 0 byte exe file but coudn't... explorer had open hadles to it and wouldn't let me. It gave me the "Cannot delete file: it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that may be using the file and try again." error. After much head scratching, I found that I could read and write to the file but couldn't delete, rename or move it. restarting explorer or the whole computer didn't work.
Finally, I took a real exe, made a copy of it, named the copy the exact name of the offending exe file then moved the copy into the folder with the offending exe file thus overwriting the 0 byte exe file with a real exe. after killing explorer and restarting it to close its open handles to the file, i could then delete the file.

and it's not just a one time thing. I can right click on the desktop, and create a new text document, and have "New Text Document.txt" which I can delete fine, but if I rename it to "New Text Document.exe" I can't delete it anymore!

Anybody hear of anythig like this? It's a new one for me.

I have a new computer with Vista Home Premium and I moved some of the Public Folders (Public Documents, Music, Pictures) from C to D, as instructed by Microsoft at this link When you try to move a public folder in Windows Vista, the Move button may be missing

I want to be able to share these folders from their new location with the other computers in my home network, so I turned on the Public Folder sharing in the Network and Sharing Center.

However, in the Network and Sharing Center the only public folders recognized are the ones still at the original location - C:\Users\Public\Favorites and C:\ ...\Public Desktop (hidden files) and ...\Recorded TV.

I have spent a few hours searching for the answer to this on the internet. In this version of Vista Home Premium, there is NOTthe option to change the letter of the directory in the registry by changing the key called public as suggested by the How To Geek at this link Move the Public Folder in Windows Vista :: the How-To Geek

You should see a key called Public. Double-click it to open it and change it to D:\Public, or whatever location you want to move the public folder to."Note - Vista Home Premium does NOT have a Public key.

Ooops, I meant to post this in Hardware...??

OK the box my new machine came in says:

"VRAM: Shared"

I suppose that refers to "Video" memory (?), and relates to the "Intel HD 3000 Graphics" which I also apparently have...or are they one-and-the-same, please?

This is "integrated" (built-in) graphics, yes?

And if I am able to improve upon this (or improve upon these things), what might the "LOW-END" price range to achieve that be, please?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:"VRAM: Shared"? And Graphics "Card" Question

HI Glenn

Moved your thread to hardware for you

Yes you are very correct VRAM is video ram and the shared part is generally for onboard graphics solutions like the Intel HD Graphics, so what it does is have limited RAM on the video hardware itself and then uses a portion of your main system ram to top this up.

Sadly Glenn, updating a laptop graphics is not worth the hassle or cost and in some cases you just could not do it, dependant on model as the space to fit new hardware would not be available

Question what is it you need good graphics for as in many cases for daily usage onboard graphics will be fine (Surfing, Office, Email, mid range image editing and basic games), if you wanted this laptop for mid to high end gaming then always better off with a desktop and good mid/high graphics card, but this depends on the games.

I recently got back from a month long vacation that I of course took my laptop to. There were no problems the entire time, not even the morning I was to go home; however that very night when I got back I tried to log in (Windows 10) and after an abnormally long load time with a loading message along the lines of "Preparing Windows" that I never got before, got an error that I could not be logged in to my Microsoft account.
I was put on a temporary user and lost access to all my files, settings, everything. My hard drive is at the same capacity as before so I know they're still there, just out of my reach. The error message said something to the effect of "try signing out and back in" which did NOT fix the issue, not the first or the fifteenth time I tried. I've been scouring the web for the past three days and nothing has worked. What's odd is this seems to be a widespread issue, but there is no surefire fix on the net. Here's a list of things I've tried, to no avail:
-Signing out/back in
-Updating Windows and repeating the above
-Booting in Safe Mode
-Changing my Microsoft password
-Restarting
I'm typing this now from a new user and different Microsoft account I made to see if the problem persisted, but it did not. I sign in immediately with no weird error messages and whatever files I've created since its recent inception remain available. I've accepted that I will likely have to scrap the old user and move everything to the new one, but that's the rub; how can I access th... Read more

I set this Windows 7 computer up wrong more than a year ago and have just lived with it, but I am wanting to use an online backup service, and want my files to be in a standard place just in case.

When I moved my files from my previous computer, the first thing I did was create a separate partition on my new computer, drive "R." I meant to then put everything in the "Documents" folder and locate it on the "R" partition (I had it set up this way on the previous computer, using Vista).

Somehow I got befuddled and they all went in the "Contacts" folder (correctly located on "R" but incorrectly identified). I think when I moved them from the default location on the "C" drive to the new partition on "R," I must have gotten trigger happy and hit the wrong folder button or something, I don't quite remember.

Fixing it is not as simple as using the "Location" tab in the "Properties" dialog for "Contacts." I want to leave all my folders on the "R" drive, I just want them to be in "Documents" not "Contacts."

I'm afraid if I simply rename "Contacts" to "Documents" or move them manually that will break all links to programs (big and small, such as Word, Dropbox, iTunes, etc.)

Screen shots below.

(And yes, the "Contacts" folder inside my "Contacts" directory does contain MS Exchange contact files.)

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Currently running a virus scan after a recent malware report (it was removed safely and normally), AVG has now come up with some locked files. I'm worried since the malware may have allowed more viruses to come through. What should I do now?

Most of these files are normally Recycle Bin files, AppData, Program Data etc.

Answer:AVG does not test "locked files".

Hello Peter Hurry and welcome to the forums

There are much better anti-virus programs out there than AVG so I would recommend that you change to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and Malwarebytes' Anti Malware (MBAM).

Remove AVG with the removal tool: AVG - Download tools

   Note
You will need to select the appropriate tool to remove your version of AVG because I don't know what you have installed.

MSE & MBAM

Download and install MSE from here: Virus, Spyware & Malware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials
and MBAM from here: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Run a FULL scan with both of those and attach the MBAM log with your next post for me ot analyse.

That should give you sufficient protection so now lets clean up anything that shouldn't be on your system

HijackThis

Download HijackThis from here: HijackThis - Trend Micro USA
And run a scan and attach the log with your next post please

CKScanner:
Please download CKScanner from here to your Desktop.
Make sure that CKScanner.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!

Double-click on CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files. After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.A message box will verify the file savedDouble-click on the CKFiles.txt icon on your Desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

i've been relying on going to "internet options","general" and "delete" then ticking all the boxes on that page..i found out that by doing this,my temporary internet file swere NOT being deleted.is this a vista problem? my pc came to a complete sludge of a slow down today and i found that my internet files folder had files going back a year that hadn't been deleted as i've been relying on ticking those boxes..i had tons and tons of and tons of files.i'm wondering if this is the norm and also is it possible that other files are not being deleted when using that method? if so,then i probably have folders that are totally loaded with trash.

Hi folks. This is after doing an upgrade from Server 2008 to Server 2008 R2 mind you. Not sure if that matters.

I was having problems with RDPing to my Win7 clients so I checked that remote desktop was enabled. When doing so I saw that it informed me that I had to allow rdp access in the firewall which I know had been done before. After looking around I realized that my network profile had been changed to "Public". I also noticed that my active network shows as "unauthenticated". What does this mean and how can I fix this? How did this happen? Thanks.

Answer:Network shows as "Unauthenticated"....Changed my network profile to "Public"

How many DCs are there in the domain?
I suggest that you remove the Windows 7 computer from the AD, and exit the Windows 7 computer from domain. Then, re-join the computer to the domain. How does it work now?
If the issue persists, please temporary disable the firewall on both computers. Also, please check if Network Location Awareness service is enabled on the server and Windows 7 computers.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Ok, so basically, whenever I turn the computer on, 3 error messages appear:

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee.exe

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee1.exe

- Error loading H:/Archiv~/GBPLUG~/gbiehcef.dll. Couldn't find specific module.

(sorry if some terms are incorrect, my computer is in Spanish, to I tried to translate as best as possible)

Please help me solve this terrible problem, it is really getting me on my nerves! (oh, and if this helps, I've recently donwloaded this so called "Limewire acceleration", and whenever I ran the setup, it didn't work. I don't really remember the name of the website I downloaded it from, sorry...)

Answer:Can't Open "My Documents", "Trash" or other files in "My Computer"!?

Have copied the "Pro_highres" files to my computer and deleted the smaller "Pro" files on the phone (Lumia 930) in order to save space. To me it seems logical that the larger files are the master files and should not be affected by removal of the smaller copies. However, the highres files which by mistake were not copied before the the smaller Pro files were deleted can not be opened, copied or viewed. The larger files can be opened on the computer even without the presence of the smaller files. While the phone is connected to the computer it is still possible to see the file names of the highres files on the computer screen but not on the phone - and again - I can not copy them from the phone to the computer nor open the files. What has happened and how to I get access to these photos??!! Thanks for any help!

Answer:Unable to see, copy or open the "Pro_highres" photo files after deleting the smaller "Pro" files?

Use File Browser on your computer to rename them to the file name of the 5MP version.
I'm finding that manipulation of the High Res jpegs from Lumia Camera on the phone is just not worth the blasted efforts. Shoot 5MP + High Res DNG and put Rawer on your phone. Then shoot your High Res jpegs in ProShot or Camera360 Sight and access them as normal through Camera Roll.

I have a program that uses it's own library. The path to this library can't be changed, and it's inside the "Program Files" folder. And the software itself has to be installed inside "Program Files" too, otherwise it won't work correctly (it's a new release and still a bit buggy).

Now, when I add something to this library, it's supposed to be present in the library folder. BUT Win 7 doesn't show me any files that have been created by programs inside the "Program Files" folder. The folder where the new library is supposed to be is empty. But the library is there inside the program, so it has to be somewhere.

Now, how am I supposed to backup those files if I can't access them?

Please help!

Answer:How to display files inside "Program Files" folder?

The program you are using is broken. You should ask the developer to fix it.
In reality the program is really accessing the file in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

I have an Alltel USB wireless card and an onboard Gigabit ethernet. When I installed these network cards I accidently told the onboard ethernet that it was on a Public network. How do I change it to Home.
With that interface on Public I cannot join my other computers Homegroup.

In the "Network and Sharing Center" the USB wireless has a link under it that brings up a window where I can change it to Home or Public. etc...
But, the onboard Gigabit network adapter is listed as an "Unidentified Network" and there is no link under it to change it.

Answer:How can I change my NIC to "Home" instead of "Public"

Have you tried clicking on the "Set up a new connection or network" link and following the steps to create a new connection? You should be able to create a new connection using the Gigabit adapter and then just remove the old public profile.

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

Howdy everybody!
When I hit the Windows & Print Screen keys, it is supposed to generate a picture of my Desktop into a Folder, within Pictures, labelled “Screenshots.”
But there is no such "ScreenShots" folder there!
What should I do? If I simply create a new folder, and label it “Screenshots,” will do that do the trick?  Or is there a more complicated fix?
Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

Thanks in advance

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

Answer:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

Hello Russell,

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

Answer:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.

So I've noticed this folder on my desktop, its called "misc" When I open it I find files that don't have an extension. In properties it just says File Type: File.

There are 86 files in total and their names seem to be random numbers and letters but they all start with 4.

Is this a virus or something? My computer has been slow but I was wondering if anyone knows if this is from a program.

Hey guys,

Someone here at work had a HD out of an old PC. His wife stored a lot of data in her My Documents. He can see most everything under Users/her username, but not documents and settings. IIRC this is a feature to hide the files to basically keep someone from stealing the hd and getting them, unless I am totally making up my memory of having heard that. Is this so, and if so how can he bypass it and get the files?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Getting files from user's "Documents and Settings" folder from pulled HD.

Search for how to take ownership of the files in the OS you are using.

I am wondering if anyone has this issue too after updating to window 8.1.
In the window explorer, I like to set my files sort by date modified, in every other window version even I browse to other folders or drives and return to the particular folder, it will be still sort by date modified. However in window 8.1, whenever i browse to other folder or drives, the particular folder will go back to sort by name which is annoying as I have to sort it to date modified every time. Anyone have a solution to this problem??

I got a message from Symantec Anti Virus a couple days ago when I was on a veteran job board about to post a resume. It said it was blocking some suspicious activity. Shortly after that, I noticed when I did a google search for about anything, the links were not going to what I was selecting. I also noticed a lot of strange processes running in task manager. I went to msconfig and deleted the startup processes and there was a folder named "LP" in program files that was not previously there. I deleted it but it keeps regenerating when I reboot. The cryptic processes seem to have stopped for the time being but I am still getting the browser hijacks at random times. Other issues have been strange Internet Explorer messages when I am not even using Internet Explorer, it changed my Firefox and IE settings to use a proxy server, and a couple of random pop up windows. You do need to be admin on both (and yes they are different). You also should not be in Program Files as that is solely for legacy for 32 bit apps, shouldnt be anything there that you need to change.

Good evening,

I was having a bit of difficulty dealing with a certain virus which has infected my computer.

It started when a number (maybe 15ish) of infected files were picked up by my AVG antivirus and sent to the virus vault. I immediately rebooted in safe mode such as to conduct a virus scan there; I ran it twice, first time removed infections (all of which were in the AppData folder), second time found none. I went ahead and rebooted normally, only to find that a new virus had been made (once again, in the AppData folder). Ran a controlled virus scan in AppData, it found one more. Ten minutes later, ran again, found nothing.

I went again into Safe Mode to try and remove the viruses... AVG found nothing. Rebooted into normal: another virus was created in AppData. Ran a controlled scan in AppData, found one more.

I admit to not being extremely tech-savvy, but from what I gather, the virus seems to be generating new viruses. I would appreciate if someone could help me resolve this issue.

I've followed the instructions in the "NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting for Malware Removal Help" to the best of my abilities, and I don't believe I've missed a step. Please let me know if I can provide any more information to help.

Answer:Virus creates new "infected" .exe files in the AppData folder

Good morning,

I don't mean to inadvertently bump the thread, however, I feel that I have some additional information which may be beneficial.

The virus either restores or creates a new virus every 10 - 15 minutes.

The virus keeps generating the .exe files into their own individual folders (once again, under AppData/Local/etc or AppData/Roaming/etc...)

Turning off the wifi appears to prevent the virus from generating new .exe files.

Hope this is helpful!

Sincerely,
Alex

This all started when I recently had some malwares/viruses roaming around my laptop one day. I had managed to get rid of it all but it left my Direct Console 2.0 useless (I have an ASUS G-50V, Vista Premium 64-bit). I've tried reinstalling it and it just wouldn't load, no error message or anything (it did show up on taskmanager but no window appeared).

So trying to find a solution on google I ended up installing .net Framework 4.0. However, after restarting i started getting a ton of error messages about files in the Program Files folder, and then I realized it had just completely disappeared (rather, all the files inside disappeared). First the error messages said the folder was "corrupt and unreadable."

I navigated to the folder and tried clicking it, which then another error message popped up saying "Access is denied." I tried almost every solution I found on google, changing ownership and such, but I still cannot open the folder. Moreover, I cannot repair or uninstall any program that is or has been in the Program Files which I'm assuming has to do with the permission issues. I noticed this when I ran the setup for Direct Console 2.0 and tried to repair it, only giving me an error saying "The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\Program Files (x86)ASUS\OvClk.dll." But this also makes no sense to me as this is the x86 program files folder, which I can access.

I checked both of the folders and TrustedInstaller has... Read more

When I try to create a new folder or copy and try to paste a file, an error occurs "explorer.exe" and immediately stops/ blocks the action. Also, pressing 'file' is enough to make it crash.

Can you help?

Hi,
It's my first time here.. I have been readnig different posts here and there but you seem to always take the time to make sure everythng is cleaned up before closing a thread and I like that a lot.. so here is my problem..

I've been recently trying to improve the security on my PC.. I use to have only AVG 8 free and it seems not to be as efficient as some people say..

SO I downloaded Kasperspy + MalwareBytes AntiMalware + SuperAntiSpywarePro + Look N Stop

Now most of there are new to me.. such as the firewall..

But for the last 2 days, after a few hours online my pc starts sowing down a lot.. big time. I sometimes detect stuff with the firewall but I am not sure if it went through or not.. and what it was.. (I can learn fast.. but for now, I dont know much about it all..any directions are appreciated)

Now I noticed that the folder DIFX had appeared in my Prgram Files.. 3 days ago.. but I havent installed that - could it be somekind of a keylogger of backdoor or whatever ?

Also, I had downloaded a software into a .zip . I havent opened the .zip
(99% sure....) and I upladed the file t VirusTtal - they fund 6 viruses..

Tried scanning it with my 3 anti-spyware/malware.. they fund NOTHING !

All I want is a PC that is 100% CLEAN & PROTECTED !!

Is there any way you could help me out fix these issues ?
Thanks a lot

Andy

Answer:PC is slowing down + "DIFX" folder appeared in Prog. Files ?

Well, you may have a virus, but the DIFX folder is part of the WDK. I doubt a malware writer would use this kit / distributable files to make a malware.

When your system slows down, run a process explorer type of system like System Explorer and see if any strange processes are among the top dozen processes. If so, you are infected and your machine is probably a zombie.

OTOH, you may just have an arthritic Windows setup. The solution to that is to back up your data and then reinstall Windows clean. That will also croak any malwares.

I found that XP enables this by default, but so it's not the problem, why can't I use Live Update to update my Norton Anti-virus, I could before, but not now

Answer:I don't have write access to my "Progam Files" folder, I am the Admin, why not?

Sounds like Norton isn't shuttings its services down properly before the file update and its maintaining a file lock. Try shutting down the services for it and then updating.

I've seen this happen before with lots of different AV products when they don't release the AV database properly during upgrades.

I mostly use my computer for photography. I keep a folder on my desk top where I store photos that I have printed.

I also write adjustments I have made to the photos in "note pad" but find that I cannot move these files to the folder in which I want to keep them. Nothing I have tried works. Drag and drop doesn't work. Nor does using control+C and control+V.

Could it be possible that the thing I have done in win 95, 98, and XP can't be done in win 7? WTF?

Answer:Can't move "note pad" files to desk topo folder.

Where do you save them initially?

See what LockHunter tells you abut the file you are trying to move. It may be in use or locked ad LockHunter (or a similar program can free the lock).

OS: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 with the latest updates installed as of 6/14/2017.
Hardware: 120GB SSD, 8GB RAM, Intel i7-2600K 3.4GHz CPU
Problem: cleanmgr.exe has neither the "Cleanup system files" button nor the "Windows Update Cleanup" option and my winsxs folder is over 17GB in size.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled KB2852386 to no avail.  I have researched quite a bit but find no solutions that work.
What can I do to reign in my Windows Update folder size?
