Not getting internet speeds provided on an Asus G73SW through Charter

Question: Not getting internet speeds provided on an Asus G73SW through Charter

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm here due to a long standing issue of not getting the reported speeds by Charter in my household. Basically I'm paying for a 30mb plan and I'm only getting around 10-15mb verified through Ookla. The hitch is that while the computers in our household report only 10-15mb (2 separate laptops, and even the first tech Charter sent out), the final techs came out with their laptop and were able to get a 50mb connection with no troubleshooting. This leads me to believe that either a wireless card or driver is having problems but I'm just not sure where the problem truly lies due to multiple computers having the issue and the problem occuring both hardwired into the modem and through wifi. I actually get 15mbps through wifi and only 10 hardwired to the modem for some reason.

Here's my rundown.

1. Wired and Wireless issue

2. ISP - Charter

3. Connection - Cable

4. Router - DLink WBR-1310 Firmware 1.04 , Modem - Motorola SB6121 (has been switched out by techs)

5. No antivirus installed. Malware bytes as a cleaner. (has been run, I'm clean)

6. See 3 attached files.

I am unsure of my wireless card's serial number but the only driver I had found to kick start my wireless after reinstalling windows was an Atheros driver. It shows Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter but that may be due to installing that driver. I'm unsure on that side of things due to Asus having different wireless LAN downloads on their site here.

https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultra...G73SW/#support

There was also an older thread mentioning this same problem that was left unresolved found here.

Vastly inconsistent bandwidths across multiple Windows 7 machines

Any help with getting up to the speed that last tech reported would be great. While this is milled over and answers come through I'm going to verify my wireless card and try running through some of the separate drivers again on the Asus website. I personally think it may be an issue with some software throttling the connection in the laptops but I can't pinpoint what. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Not getting internet speeds provided on an Asus G73SW through Charter

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Not getting internet speeds provided on an Asus G73SW through Charter

Ok, using outdated wireless G will be like a bottle neck on the connection speed. You should really try measuring with a wired connection to get a true reading. If you don't have a wireless N router then consider upgrading the router as it's the only way to improve the connection speeds for the wireless.

If you want better speeds get an N router set to 802.11N only and not mixed using WPA2 personal security with AES encryption. The mixed wireless settings will hold you back on connection speeds limiting you to 54Mbps "network speeds not ISP".

This old router is a relic and using WEP security is not reliable, fast or safe.

With this nice of a laptop you really are holding it back with this old router. I'm surprised the connection even works with a router this old and the LAN speeds being slower than the wireless just isn't right and I doubt it's a problem with the Asus laptop. You should only need to update the laptop via Windows Update Center, this will fix most every problem if there is one.

If you want better speeds you need to update your router/hardware.

Other than that it's all on the ISP and everyone complains they aren't getting the advertised speed. Too many variables to mention here and there isn't a single solution that can fix this but updating that router would be my first move.

Hi,
Remove PCTools - known cause of BSOD on some Windows 7 Systems.

Hey guys,

I need some hellppppppp. I have an Asus G73SW Laptop and the network connection has been spotty as of late.

Readers Digest Version: Worked fine yesterday nothing has change in my connection settings, router settings or server settings. (Computer is located at work in an AD setup, I am first level IT Support here) Router shows as it is getting a connection from the network card which is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller with latest drivers right from realtek (and asus version tried too). But is not connecting at 10/100 or 1000. (Have two connection sources to test to).

What I have tried:
- Tried it on a 10/100 router and a gigabyte switch
- Multiple cat5's
- Performing a clean uninstall of the driver and reinstall both from the Asus and Realtek websites of both drivers.
- Disabling the lan rebooting, enabling he lan and trying to connect.
- Disabling power save multiple times.
- Checking bios for any lan options (which there was surprisingly very little options)
- Latest bios firmware
- Tried changing the duplex to 10/100 for the hell of it!

May try:
- Reinstalling windows. *sigh*

I had this problem a couple weeks ago, I went into the bios and enabled PXE boot when into windows and it was suddenly working as usual again. Went back to bios disabled PXE and it was still working fine. I did it again today to no avail....

I think I am running out of options and may possibly be facing a failing network card?

Please assist! =)

Got my Asus G73SW notebook about a week ago but it keeps throwing up BSODs randomly. I don't have to run some resource intensive programs, sometimes it even occurs when being idle on my desktop or starting up windows. I hoped SP1 would fix it but to no avail so you are my last hope.

At risk of being obvious, it sounds a bit like malware - have you had chance to scan it? (or is it off too much)

I have an Asus G73sw laptop with some BSOD problems after a fresh installation of windows. The BCC's are listed as follows 7E, 0, C4, 24, 124, A, 109, 24, D1, 7F, F4, and 50. I have yet to have any crash while in safe mode. The hdd has passed Seatools HDD test long and short as well as 14 rounds of memtest. CHKDSK finds no errors. Sometimes I'll have the PC lock up and show no activity on the HDD LED.

Hi, I was just wondering if it's normal for my laptop to slow down when it's running on battery. When I play Mass Effect 2 using AC, everything runs smoothly, bu when I am running on batter, it's a little laggy.

Answer:Asus G73SW slows down when running on Battery

I wouldn't suggest trying to play high requirement games on batteries.
Most laptops are set to throttle themselves in order to save battery life when unplugged.
These settings can be found in the control panel.
Under power options.
You can probably fix the problem but battery life could be cut down to as little as 20 or 30 minutes if left on full blast.

Hi there,
I need help deciphering the cause of the BSOD in my laptop. The circumstances are not always the same when it happens. Mostly what's open at that time is Outlook 2010, Firefix browser (Typo3 website updates), Pandora (not necessarily playing).

I have done exhaustive hardware tests and no matter how hard or long I stressed it I could not replicate BSOD this way. My suspicion is a driver. I am attaching SF Diagnostic Tool output folder zipped. Please see if you can kindly help!

Hi jap.

You need to update the USB3 driver.

The one available with ASUS is even older that the installed one.

Get it from FRESCO LOGIC INC.===Leap into SuperSpeed===

Let us know the situation after updating the driver.

Hi all,

I just purchased my new ASUS G73sw about two weeks ago. Performed a clean installation of Windows 7 64bit, and all of my software (All legal).

I have received 4 crashes at random times, each time my PC has been asleep for an extended period of time.

The .dmp file is saying the probably cause is: ntoskrnl.exe

No clue what to do here. I would prefer NOT to do a clean installation just because reinstalling and resetting everything takes forever. Is there an easy update/fix here?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am really curious about speeds from ISPs. If you get a 3mbps plan max dl speed that can be achieved is around 400kbps(this is what i get not including partnering websites with the ISP)

If another guy owns a 100mbps connection, (again same condition as above)max dl speed achieved is around 10mbps~20mbps

So does this mean that whatever connection you buy, your dldin speed will be 10 times lower but maybe a lil more(ratio depends)??

I know other factors affects like which server you are downloading from but lets say its from a file hosting website that allows you to download at your max capped speed.

EDIT: Also, does downloading at a low speed means you're more likely to timeout with the server?

Answer:Solved: Ques: About ISP provided speeds

Remember, the downloads are in bytes, and the ISP speeds are in bits. Each byte has 8 bits.

3mbit/sec / 8bits = 375kbites/sec, assuming you are using 100% of the bandwidth.

anything change in the house at all which might explain why the 2 days is fine

what have Charter said and have you tried to get them to do a line test when you have a poor connection

I'm not from US - but just for internet that seems a very high price, unless something special

have you tried a powercycle when its a poor connection
------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes,
Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a seperate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

So at my household, the internet connection fluctuates in how frequently it drops. Yesterday, we could not keep it going for more than 5 minutes without having to restart the router.\ (soon after restarting the router, the same issue happens again) /
Basically, what happens is the internet on our laptops will stop working (it will show as Limited Connectivity) although the router continues to send the signal out.
The only fix to this is to restart the router (using the on/off buttons on the physical router) although the problem isn't with the router itself. Going on my router's settings place (192.168.1.1) it shows that the internet is the issue. Im not really sure how to fix this... Ive tried mostly everything but nothing is a permanent fix.

Help would be greatly appreciated!!
Also- if I were to switch service providers, which would be the best near Saint Louis, MO?

Answer:Charter internet constantly dropping

Going on my router's settings place (192.168.1.1) it shows that the internet is the issueClick to expand...

how does it show you this ?
Whats the make and model of the router

If its not a router issue and a wireless issue - have you tried connecting a PC directly to the router with a cable and see what happens
What lights are showing on the router when its working OK and what happens to the lights when it stops working

if its showing the status in the router as an internet issue -

then its either a Router issue ( but you say its not the router ???? )
A problem with the telephone cables or filters - if DSL and not Cable service
A problem with the ISP themselves
Have you contacted the ISP and asked them to do a line test

Have you tried disconnecting everything from the telephone lines - except just the router

So I decided to get back into gaming a couple months after my move. I've never had any problems with gaming on any computers that I have back where I used to live with Comcast. But now that I have charter, for the last 3-4 weeks I've been pretty much unable to play any game on the PC online. I've tried Call Of Duty 1, 2, and 4, and Counter Strike: Source.

When it started out, my Call Of Duty 2 and 4 worked for a few minutes, then just completely stopped. Now it won't even let me go in game. It's the same case with CSS. Occasionally it works, but after a little while it freezes.

Any help?

Keep it off if you want the full speed or buy a new router, if you don't need the full speed just use the router

QoS takes quite many systems resources , and thus the router cant handle the packages in the same speed if the QoS was off

ok so I purchased this router a bit ago as my old linksys died (wrt-54g)

so I simply put the router in and configured it up.

for 2.4 and 5ghz I used the same SSID
Created a guest virtual and called it the SSID name of the other then added _Guest

life has been working fine. My Galaxy Note 3 connects fine plus 1 iPhone 5s, 1 iPad, 3 iPods...

I just got an HP TouchSmart IQ-507 from a guy at work and it has a N card in it. I set it up with Windows 8.1 and love it but I noticed the speed is 56mb.
I have since named each SSID with a _2.4ghz or _5ghz.

When I go to the network card properties is where it shows this.

so two questions.
1. Should I use the same SSID for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz or keep the naming separate?
2. Should I see a faster connection rating that 56mb?

The HP is in the dining room where the router is in the basement. The router is mounted to the floor boards literally 8 feet away and 4 feet in height (if you want to know the relationship)

Trying to figure out the most optimum network speed connection or do i just leave it and let be as it works?

Is the N client on the 2.4Ghz SSID or the 5Ghz SSID? If you are in a crowded 2.4Ghz area and your N device is on 2.4Ghz, then 56Mbps is typical.

Hey guys, I would like to upgrade my cpu and I was wondering what speed of cpu's I can go to with my asus meb motherboard.
the specs on the motherboard are as follows:
ASUS MEB ACPI, BIOS REVISION 1007/16/99
intel 440BX AGP set.

Now the motherboard manual displays info for "celeron cpu's" for the motherboard only at 66Mhz (and 100Mhz for some reaon) front side bus and multiplier of 7 for a total of 466, I would like to put a pentium3 cpu on the motherboard... is this possible!

The manual states that the bus frequency goes up to 150Mhz and the multiplier goes up to 8. That makes a processor speed of 1.2gig, I want to aim for a 1gig pentium3 processor which is 133Mhz by 8 or there abouts, if you do the math i can potentialy get a cpu speed of 1.2gig that is 150x8=1200mhz, but i dont wanna fry anything in the process.

Sent an email to asus but have yet to get any response.
any info would be appreciated greatly thanks

Answer:Cpu speeds for asus motherboard.

forget the 1.2 Ghz, the FSB's are asynchronous with the AGP and PCI (so you will overclock them massivly at fsb 150, and you don't want to do that knowing the PCI and AGP cards won't handle it).

The FSB 100 is possible and maybe some slight numbers above (up to 110 maybe).

I think a BX chipset can still handle a PIII 800 (and a lill' more if you up the FSB slightly).

Hello everyone i'm currently experiencing some issues with my new Asus RT-n66u router. When I bypass the router and plug my modem directly into my computer I get consistent speeds of around 20/Mbps. When I have my router set up those speeds drop down to around 8-9 Mbps (wired connection).

The routers firmware has been updated to the newest merlin version.

I understand that connection speed may naturally slow down when going through a router but 50% decrease seems like over kill.

Thanks!

Answer:Slow Speeds With ASUS RT-N66U

Also some clarification. I've tried different ethernet cables all with the same results.

Another odd thing is that when I reset my router (turn off and back on) my speeds come out to be about 20mbps. However if I wait about 10 min the speeds drop down to 8-10 mbps.

Hello everyone

So yesterday my Asus Quietrack was working fine, able to run any dvd / cd i placed within the drive quickly.

However, today when i decided to load up a program, and install it using the dvd, the speed in which it installed dropped suddenly. The spinning sound of the disc drive also disappeared, which is very strange. The sound was always there when i added discs before.
It is now very, very quiet, but the speed in which it installs anything has dropped dramatically.

Any methods i can use to speed it up?

Steve

My daughter is in Disney's College Program, and living in Disney-provided housing, which includes Disney-provided cable.

Much like a college dorm though, the wi-fi is controlled by Disney, shared throughout the building (versus specific to the apartment), and horrible.

She has already contacted the housing people about improving this, but I am not optimistic that she will get a sustained improvement.

What are some easy (she's not an IT whiz by any means) and affordable (not making a ton of money) ways for her to improve the in-apartment wi-fi? Is it possible in such a situation to just provide their own modem and router to have their own wifi?

Hi
I am having some odd issues with my wired setup behind a router.

I get sub 500kb/s when downloading one thing. However if I download like 6 files at once, my total bandwidth jumps to over 2mb/s, with a couple files going up to 1mb/s.

When I called the ISP they had me run tests and they all showed the line and modem at good specs, and speedtests show perfect results. But actually downloading anything is quite slow with the router installed.

I tried a few things so far like turning off QoS, trying old and new firmware, testing ethernet cables, factory resets, trying openDNS. The router has pretty much all default settings at the moment

This is especially weird being wired to the router.

Has anybody had problems with CA, which I think stands for Computer Associates, the internet security service provided free by Road Runner? When I first signed up with Road Runner I had Norton security, but when my subscription ran out I decided to try the free CA, since Road Runner promised it was just as good, and free. I had nothing but trouble with it. Among other problems, my personal files would take ages to load, even if I'd just shut them, and every website I visited I would get a message from Google telling me the site had become unresponsive.Someone told me to uninstall it and and use Microsoft Essentials instead, and my computer's been zipping along at proper speed since. This is a true account of my experience, and I do not work for Microsoft.

Hey guys,

It seems this problem has been annoying me for quite some time now but I have never really bothered to fix it simply because I really don't use the drive to install my games and stuff.

But NOW the time has come for me to install a game from a disc (GTAIV) it's taking FOREVER! I mean it barely moves.

I have the ASUS DRW-2014L1T and I have updated to the latest firmware 1.02 already.

the drive is in sata mode.

The rest of my pc specs are:

Intel Core i7 920
4gb ddr3 ram
Asus P6T
WD 500gb Hd

I don't know what the problem but it is incredibly annoying when it takes like 2 hrs to install a game on my PC from a disc...

Then I tested it using my phone desktop and brothers laptop and it was fine I was getting less then 1mbps when I should be getting 30mbps. I opened it up took the ram stick out booted back up ran a speed test got 32mbps lol So I put the ram chip back in same process got less then 1mbps. Did this 3 times.. Having multiple problems with signing in to Windows Internet Explore 7 but listed as www6.comcast.net. McAfee stops my signing in by doing the virus scan and find long delays waiting for McAfee Virus scan to complete. Comcast tells me that it is a problem with Windows Internet Explorer, windows internet explorer tells me that it is Comcast. All in all it is very hard for me to sign in with all the crap being surveryed and keeps me from my wanted tasks. Wher and whom to I shout at???????

Answer:Problems with Windows Internet Explorer provided by Comcast

Hello, you are not the only one with this problem. If you do an internet search for the www6.comcast address you will find a deal of related material. A few quick links for you are here:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...9113633AA1QyQx
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r192...t-new-homepage
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...essage.id=9264
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

Many of the fixes suggest things like resetting your router, updating your browser, using a different comcast link, tooling with your firewall/s, or checking DNS settings. As this seems like a new problem with a wide set of variables, maybe some of this info could help you pinpoint the specifics causing your issue. If you use the comcast site for things like news, info, or email then you could try some of those fixes. If you don't need the comcast site, you could always just uninstall their software, and then change your hompage.

I need a internet service, similar to Dropbox in nature except that instead of just storing data I need the service to provide software to download as well as pass data. For example, I have an excel sheet saved in the services database and I want to access the excel sheet from a computer that does not have an excel program on it. So I access the service, and it provides both an excel program and the stored excel sheet.

Any help to point me in the right direction would be most helpful.

Question: X8100 or G73SW?

I'm looking to buy myself a new laptop since i blew up my old computer.
I'm looking for something thats considerably powerful for around $2500.

I've come down to a choice between a clevo X8100 and an asus G73SW-A1 both of which i want to modify a little by putting an SSD in and extending the warranty to 3 years on the one I buy.

I've never even heard of clevo before so despite a review I read MALIBAL VEDA Series Performance, Benchmarks and Conclusion
I'm still skeptical about it. Also the Clevo I'm looking at is different to the one in this review.

I live in Australia so I have to deal with gst and other junk if i buy overseas

So This is the place that I have found to buy them.
G73SW-A1
ASUS G73SW laptop notebook - G73SW-FHD-TZ016V - G73SW-A1 - 17.3 inch gaming laptop with GTX 460M

Clevo
Metabox X8100 - Clevo X8100 laptop notebook - CrossFire ATi HD 5870 graphics - 18.4 inch Gaming laptop

Which way should I go?
each one will wind up being roughly $2500-$2600 after SSD
Also are there any trustworth reviews on the Clevo?

Answer:X8100 or G73SW?

Never heard of Clevo. ASUS is #1 in my book.

I recently built a new PC, cannibalizing the old one for some parts in the process. Once completed and set up the internet had seemed fine, though I was busy installing everything so it's possible I just didn't notice at first. Since completion my internet connection has gone from previously 100% speedy to a sort off, stuttering lag. The connection itself remains on, there's no indication of losing connection to the actual internet, but sometimes it feels like I have.

It's particularly noticeable when directing to a new webpage. It now seems to stutter; taking a few seconds to register that I've redirected it, a few seconds of white screen, and then slowly everything loads in, with even thumbnail images loading choppily (it sorta reminds me of how things used to load on a modem a little bit at a time). This occurs in all browsers I've tried, including Steam.

Steam will regularly lose connection as well, which never happened previously except when it's servers were down.

I also work from home using LogMeIn.com which has not been able to establish a connection to my work pc - it can connect to the network, activate the encryption, but fails with the error "your connection to the remote computer has been lost."

Streaming sites like youtube, twitch and livestream lag at first loadup, like everything else, but the videos stream perfectly fine with no hiccups.

Question: Internet Speeds

Hi folks, just looking for some information here.

I have been a long-time Virgin Media customer and never really had cause to complain before. When we moved house back in May they had to do a fresh installation as they couldn't find the cable that came into the property despite at least four previous owners being VM customers. I have their 200Mbps Internet service and at the last house (a whole 3 miles away) regularly obtained full, or even a bit over, speed. In fact I never saw much below 195Mbps when checking on speedtest.net - connected via Ethernet cable.

Since moving to the new house I have been seeing speeds of 75-90Mbps - never more than 100, no matter what time of day I checked it. The computers are the same (1xdesktop PC, 2xlaptop PCs all running W10 plus 2xAndroid tablets and 1xAndroid phone and 1xiPhone). Today is the first time I have been at home with some time to investigate this issue so I called VM and their tech support did some tests before pronouncing the system healthy. They are firmly of the opinion that the computers aren't compatible with 200Mbps even though they were working fine before the move.

In addition to installing a new access cable VM provided a new set top box and modem when we moved in. The modem re-boots itself randomly and I have used that as an excuse to get a technician to visit and check the whole system out. They are supposedly sending an Internet specialist ... whatever one of those is.

Sorry, for the pre-amble but I thought it wo... Read more

Unfortunately I closed of my last go at this subject when I thought I'd got somewhere.I received a lot of advise on how to check the speed of my Internet connection, for which I am grateful. However, I am now confused with the various speeds that I have found and really I cannot interpret them.McFee tells me that my speed is 471.12Kbps (58.89KBps)and the actual speedometer shows 200KBPS. I am being careful with my capital letters here!My PC shows the Local Area Connection Speed 100Mbps.The ASDL BB Speed Test shows:-Actual Speed - - Downstream 459Kbps(57.4KB/sec) - - Upstream 241Kbps(30.1KB/sec)True Speed - - - Downstream Estimate 495Kbps - - - Upstream Estimate 260KbpsI'm sure that all this stuff will be perfectly clear to everybody else, but remembering that I am now supposed to be on what Tiscali calls x10 speed (512 somethings), could someone please attempt to explain to an old idiot like me, what all these figures might mean.

Question: Internet speeds

Has anyone else here noticed a considerable drop in internet speeds when a win10 machine logs onto thier network? I have slow Internet at 6mbps but it is fine with the 2 win7, 2 android and 2 linux boxes. I have 3 win10 machines and no matter which of the 3 i boot the network crawls on any other machine thats logged in. I have isolated to just the 3 win 10 machines. It is very frustrating.

Answer:Internet speeds

I can't say I've noticed anything, its at its usual speeds. Did you do an inplace upgrade install for those machines from older versions of Windows?

Iam a little confused as what internet speeds actually mean? Iam currently on a 150kb/s modem, which should mean that I can download 1mb in less than 10 seconds, but obviously this isn't the case. Iam going to upgrade to a 1mb connection in a few weeks, so if anyone could explain what I can expect from that it would be helpful.

Answer:What Do Internet Speeds Actually Mean?

The kbs means kiloBITS not kiloBYTES so no you can't download 1Mb in 10 seconds....150 kb/s is 150 kiloBITS per second.

Question: Internet speeds???

So I have 25Mbs download from xfinity. I do a speed test I get 22 (Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test). No big deal. My question is why if I have 20-25Mbs, when I download a program to run 40.8MB why does it take 10 minutes? It should take literally 2 seconds correct? I'm downloading the Netgear Genie. So not a big file at all.

Thanks for looking and the help.

Howdy, One and All!

Hopefully I'll get all the info correct the first time out, lol

Situation:
Internet speeds (surfing, etc.) fluxuate. Sometimes, great, mostly though...creeping along, pages loading slowly or incompletely.

ISP: Joink (only horse in town)
Wireless INTO the house to black box
Black box connected to linksys befsr41v.2 Firmware: 1.46.2 (latest version)

PC1: win xp (jacked up old gaming pc ....more, but its not mine, so will have to edit ) - LOL
PC2: Linux 5.0
PC3: (on KVM switch w/PC2) linux 4.5

PC1 : usually uses Firefox as browser
PC2 : Opera
PC3 : default

Unhooking everything and taking the wan into PC1 will result in 'normal speeds'
reconnecting the linksys, slows everything down..........

It is my assumption that the linksys is having trouble "talking to" the joink service somehow, or something is not configured right within the linksys itself
Please, save my sanity,

Upon asking questions for something I may have missed, please note I am not a PC Wizard, rather wet behind the ears in fact...........

Thanks!

Question: Internet speeds?

My question is this. I live in small remote town and am a pastor of a church. We need to upgrade our internet to be able to run 5-7 video streams at once, about once a week. is there a difference between 10mb x 10mb and 15mb x 5mb? I understand the the upload and download speeds. But someone here said the 10x10 would be much more stable and allow for more bandwidth because the speeds are matched. Is that a concern? We only upload one or two 20 minute videos a week so we don't really need a lot of upload speed.

Question: Internet speeds???

Ok.... I need help. I don't know if I am evaluating this wrong or not. Right not my boyfriend and I get online via his sister's wireless router. I am looking to connect service to our house. Here is the problem right this moment Windows says we are getting 36.0 Mbps. I'm looking at paying for internet that ranges in speeds from 1.0Mbps up to like 25 Mbps. I'm looking at minimum of 32.99 for 3 Mbps. Isn't the 36.0 Mbps I'm already getting for free better? Thank in advanced for your help.

Answer:Internet speeds???

The 36mbps youre seeing is likely your LAN speed via wireless. If you were to plug your computer in, youd see that go up to 100mbps, or 1gbps if you have it. the way to check your internet speed is by going to a site like www.speakeasy.net/speedtest, clicking on the server closest to you, and itll tell you an accurate download and upload speed or obviously asking your ISP what you have.

Question: Internet speeds

I am experiencing a slow internet connection using my new desktop
(Specs: i7 2600 Intel core , ram 8GB, 1TB Hardrive
In comparison to my currently overall much faster laptop (2.10ghz)
Internet speeds using BBC connection speed test being as follows:
Laptop (built in wi-if)- 8334 kbps - when both desktop and laptop on and using internet
Laptop (built in wi-fi)- 8374 kbps - when desktop off and only laptop connected to internet
Desktop - -448 kbps - when laptop on and using internet
Desktop - 438 kbps - when laptop off and only desktop using internet
As an example it took me two hours on my desktop to download 221MB and with other downloads it was still as slow
I am using a TEXET wireless 802.11b/g/n USB adapter with advertised connection speed of 150 mbps
and I use a BT wireless hub
I don't think it could be the hub as the desktop runs slow whether in competition with my laptop for internet connection or not
Also if it was the hub why would it always give such a fastest rate to the laptop when both are on.?
According to the Realtek 11n USB software which came with TEXET wireless adapter it shows signal strength 67% and link quality
99% - I would expect a faster connection if these are correct.
Anyone have any ideas how I might go about fixing this issue?
Thanks

spyware and internet speeds

Day to day i browse the net to find better ways to get a faster internet connection. Ive bought net accerators and checked out many things. The best raw data accerator is (at least for a 56k modem) is to clear all spyware. I have foun that if i clear all spyware i will find a increase of from 2.50k to a 5.00k data increase in data income ( mesured in downloads), thats double the speed for my connection. However its is very difficult to keep the spys off so that you can keep the same connection. Sometimes the spyware can take half of your internet speed.

Questions:

1. Are there any programs out there that will display what programs are using the modem data thats coming in.

2. Spyblaster, ad-aware, even spy-sweeper programs fail to keep the spys from coming back. I think that the programs aren't deleting them. When using a spyprogram do you quarientine the infection or do you quarientine and then delete? Does delete, delete from system the infected files or do they delete the quarentined programs thus no longer quarentined (or moved to a quarentine bin)?

3. Do spyware have root installation programs that alot of these modern spyware programs aren't detecting and destroying.

Answer:spyware and internet speeds

Hi, When you use AdAware or SpyBot let's say...the items are quarantined but are removed from the system....the quarantined items can be deleted, once you are sure there is nothing you may have wanted to use, they rarely make any mistakes...

There are things that none of them detect or remove.

We use Hijackthis logfiles to help show any other remaining problems.

http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

If you wish, post a log from HJT. You must create a separate new folder to hold Hijackthis> and run it from there, not the temp folders.

When you start Hijackthis up, after you use the SCAN button, the Save Log button will be available, hit that and save the log as hijackthis.txt which opens with Notepad...get back here to your thread, open a Reply (not a new thread) and copy/paste the entire log into your reply.

IF the Virii/Trojans keep comming back and you have an OS that has System Restore eg. ME, XP then turn System Restore off ( How to turn System Restore Off/On ) > reboot > scan again ( making sure your virus program has latest definition files )

also before turning System Restore back on run one of the online virus checkers likeTrend's Housecall

your system slowdown could also as well as being a virus/trojan be Spyware ... do you use any Anti-Spyware programs if not then follow this superb guide http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Hello!

I have 50/5 at home and just looking for ways to get the best out of my internet"z". Last night, I ran a benchmark against my ISP's internet servers and then against Level 3 and a few others. My ISP's DNS servers are slower than frozen molasses compared to Level 3. So, I've since changed my DNS servers.

I run a Netgear 3800 router, with 2 Level 3 DNS servers set statically, and a 3rd set to Google's Public DNS (which is considerably slower - possibly due to distance/location). I have Cat 6a STP (I know, overkill) cables I purchased from Monoprice for pennies on the dollar. I know wireless will vary with signal strength, wireless interference, router/network load. I'm just looking for other ways to be a nerd and get the most out of what is available to me.

Aside from normal PC maintenance (Hard drive defragging, allowing caching for pictures/banners for faster loading), is there/are there any other things which I can do to ensure my wired/wireless internet connections are running top notch?

Hello everyone, I have an issue that I am hoping that you can help me with. This all started about 2ish weeks ago. I started noticing that my internet speeds were varying all over the place from .4 Mb/s to over 11Mb/s (see link to speedtest.net). These speed jumps are with in minutes of each other. I have called my internet provider, suddenlink, many times. They have dispatched a truck to my house and they are baffled with the speed jumps. I have had 2 different cable modems hooked up and it makes no changes to the speeds. If it helps I had a Linksys CM100, then suddenlink provided a cisco 2100. I purchased a motorola surfboard 6121 fron newegg. That one would not even link up to the internet at all (it could be DOA), so I am in the process of doing an RMA on it. The techs I spoke with seem set on that I have spyware that is hogging my connection, even though this is happening on my windows 7 desktop and a Apple MBP Laptop. It does not matter if one device or 10 is connected to the net the speeds still jump from minute to minute. Just to cover my bases ran hijack this on my windows 7 machine. The link is below to the log file.

I'm growing more and more tired of these speed jumps. I cant even use netflix, due to the ever chanding speeds. I would change internet providers if I had the choice to, but suddenlink is my only option here.

Dear all,

I'm running a small network of around 40 users, 35 users on windows XP & Vista and a further 5 on Mac's OS X. We have an sDSL 1Mb connection, 2 x windows 2000 Servers, 1 PDC with AD, DNS and DHCP, the other with ISA 2000.

wall point-------sdsl Modem------Switch
|_______ ISDN Backup
|_______ ISA External Adaptor

Everything works fine but every so often the Internet grinds to a halt running at approx 10kb/s when it normally runs at around 846 kb/s. This problem occurs to both upload and download speeds. A reboot of the sDSL connection corrects the slowness.

Is some user hogging the bandwidth with some nasty app, malware infection or is it some faulty hardware. I've check the firewall logs and nothing has really come up.

If anyone can help me with a possible cause or help in locating the fault it would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Chris

Ok, so I ended up reinstalling Windows XP on my system with my Compaq QuickRestore CD's. The install didn't reset my computer to the factory presets though. None of the bundled software was installed. And, my internet is still acting strange. Some pages load very quickly, while others just hang, or give me error pages. Is it possible the during the reinstall, certain drivers weren't installed? or does this sound more like a hardware problem, maybe with my network card or hard drive?

I've already done what I can to test my DSL connection, and my ISP says there's nothing wrong with it. I've tested it on dslreports.com and it confirmed that my speeds are excellent. Downloading & uploading are as fast as ever.

I have a Pipex Max account which gives me up to an 8 meg line with unlimited downloads. However most of the time I am running at close to or less than dial up. Pipex tell me I'm at the end of the pipe furthest from the exchange so my access is affected by the number of clients online. This I understand, but shouldn't the ISP's have to assure a minimum bandwidth to their users. If not I might as well be back on dial up.

This is just a general query - I currently connect to the internet using freeserve broadband, 512kb connection. Now they have been taken over by Wanadoo they are offering alternatives and I was toying with the idea of upgrading to 1mb connection.

What are peoples opinion of the different speeds. It is vastly noticeable or is it just when you are downloading that you notice. Does it make any difference to actually surfing. It will only cost me £7 extra a month, but I was thinking that when I eventually get around to networking the two computers we have it will make them use around the speed I am used to now. Will it be worth the extra outlay?

I just recently picked up the Linksys WRT1900AC router and initially, my speeds were fast, meaning that I was getting a connection of around 50 mbps. Just recently however, my speeds have dropped to around 20 mbps. I have thus far tried to use a wireless USB network adapter, a powerline network adapter, and a range extender attached via cat5e cable. The USB network adapter has been giving speeds of around 10 mbps, while the powerline and range extender have been stuck at around 20 mbps. I'm not entirely sure what the issue could be and any information and assistance would be greatly appreciated. The models of the connections I used are below. Thank you in advance.
