Grant Permission To Create Share Folder.

Question: Grant Permission To Create Share Folder.

Is it possible, to grant permission a user to create share of any folder of his PC in active directory environment. User can only create a share folder for other user, at the same time that user denied for any administrative power.

Please help me by providing information how can I do that.

Preferred Solution: Grant Permission To Create Share Folder.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Grant Permission To Create Share Folder.

I believe you are looking at editing group policy here. This specific change is not something I have ever done but it certainly sounds like a group policy privledge would solve your problem here.
Basically you need to give standard users the admin ability of creating shares. While not opening up anything else to them.

All I can do to get you started is tell you group policies is what you are after.
I just don't know exactly which one needs to be edited off the top of my head.

I tried to take the following steps to get the "full control" permission on a "System Volume Information" folder for a user account I had created.
right-click on the folder -> Properties -> Security tab -> Edit -> the "Permissions for <object>" dialog appears -> Add -> the "Select Users or Groups" dialog appears -> Enter the user account's name and press OK -> back to the "Permissions for <object>" dialoge -> select "Full control" for the newly added name -> Click on the Apply button
After I clicked on the Apply button, a dialoge entitled "Error Applying Security" appears, stating:

"An error occcurred while applying security information to:

...\<GUID><GUID>

Access is denied."

Behind that dialog, there was another dialog entitled "Windows Security", which states:

"Setting security information on <drive>:\System Volume Information\tracking.log"

I thought maybe Windows didn't like people to mess with such an important folder, and therefore refused to grant the permission. So, I cancelled the front "Error Applying Security" dialog. (There's another Continue button)

At this point, a new "Windows Security" dialogue popped up, saying:

"Stopping the propagation of permission settings leads to an inconsistent state, in which some objects have the settings but others don't. If you made the ch... Read more

Answer:Windows says it won't grant access permission, but it does grant.

You are looking at the permissions set on the folder. Not on the files which can have a different set of permissions. Clearly setting permissions on those files failed.

...Why are you even messing with the permissions in the first place?

Hi Ewa,
It's just a example instead of your real ID.
The ID of yours {316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97} must be in that list. Have you attempt to find it?
I have search it on my lab computer(Windows 8.1)as below:

Well, I am totally baffled (and it takes a lot to baffle me!). I want to share the My Documents folder from an XP machine with ONLY one user (the administrator) on a networked Win 7 machine. I have turned off simple sharing on the XP machine. I hate XP!! So complicated to do anything. Anyway, under security, I have tried share this folder, and not to share folder. I have gone into Advanced and messed around with permissions, taking out Everyone, using Admin only, using Network. At one point I ended up not being able to access My Documents on the local computer and had to jump through many hoops to change ownership and disable read only so that the user could use her own files!

The problem is, under Advanced in the permissions area, I cannot see the users on the remote pc to choose which one should be allowed access. I have read countless help suggestions, but none of them tell me how to actually find a particular user on the Win 7 pc and give ONLY that user permission to read (not to change) the files in My Documents on the XP pc. Can anyone give me a step by step process to do this? I work on computers all the time (I am a computer consultant) so it is embarrassing that I cannot set up this seemingly simple situation. Ugh!

Answer:Set permission for just one remote user to share a folder

1. Find out the name of the account on the remote machine (you may have to ask the owner of it).
2. Add a new account on the XP with the same name as on the Windows 7.
3. Give the desired permissions to that newly created account.

EDIT: It's simplest if you use the same password on both machines. Else you'll need to tell the Windows 7 account owner the XP's password.

The network environment is a Workgroup consisting of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 Pro, and Windows XP Pro.

My example:
I have enabled Guest account in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer.
I have created a new folder "guestshare" in c: and use Share with menu to add Guest with Read/Write Permission Level.

When I try to map it in the Windows XP Pro machine thru Map Network Drive function under Tools menu, I won't see that share using the Browse button. However, I can type the UNC path and map it.

If I turned off the Password Protected Sharing in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, I will see that share using the Browse button and able to map it. What is the reason for this behavior?

I wonder whether the following settings in Advanced sharing settings of Windows Server 2008 R2 can affect mapping:

File and printer sharing
Public folder sharing

Since mapping a drive requires authentication, is there any settings in User Right Assignments and Security Options of Local Policy that can affect mapping? For example, I wonder about the following settings:

User Right Assignments
Access the computer from the network
Allow log on locally
Deny access to this computer from the network
Deny log on locally

Security Options
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously
Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts

Also, does the setting of Guest account in the Win... Read more

I was trying to give myself permission to the file C:\Users\Tom\Local Settings. Now, no matter what I hit I keep getting the attached error messages and there is no exit.
Nothing happens when I hit edit, so I can't change anything back. Nothing happens when I hit cancel. So, my only option is to hit ok, but this gives me the attached error messages.

Should I use task manager to end the task? What are the dangers of "an inconsistent state" as displayed in the last error screen?

Is there a utility I can use to set the ownership and permissions back to there original status?

This is my first post to a forum for help, so I hope I followed the correct protocol. I thank you in advance for any help.

Answer:I am in a loop trying to grant myself permission

Hello Durangoforcards, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The C:\Users\Tom\Local Settings folder is a protected operating system folder and should not be messed with. The actual folder that the C:\Users\Tom\Local Settings points to for you local settings would be C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Local instead.

Clicking on Cancel (Error Applying Security) and OK (Windows Security) and OK (Local Setting Properties) closed them for me.

Here are the default settings for that folder. Everyone has nothing checked, and all of the other user groups have full control by default.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello,I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate edition 64 bit. This works excellently on my pc and is compatible with all the software that i use.I have multiple harddrives which i have installed into my machine. I took ownership of the drives however i am having one problem which i cannot seem to fix. Some of the files (eg Adobe acrobat files) will open file, but others will say access denied. EGX:\My Work\x.pdf - will open fineX:\My Work\x.pdf - will say access deniedif i go into security tab of THAT file i can gain access to it BUT a padlock appears on the icon, however i can open the file. there are multiple files and i dont really think i need to do this for each, there must be a quicker way to inherit permissions? How i took ownershipRigh clicked on drivePropertiesSecurity tabAdvancedOwner tabEditthen add Administrator as ownerIs this correct? If you could help me with this i would appreciate it a lot, so far i am loving this windows and the 64 being able to address more memory has made my pc really fast :)Thanks,

Answer:Grant Permission to entire drive/content

Ok after a bit of googleing and mesing with the permissions, i finally got it to work. What i done was, changed the owner of the drive to administrator. Then i went into the drive and slected the parent folder which had the padlocked files/folders with in. i changed its ownership to admin and also told it to apply the permission to all child files/folders.worked :)

I've done this file sharing many times and have always gotten it to work one way or another ... that is until today. Here is my situation:

- Windows 7 home, 64 bit with network discovery and file sharing turned on and the 40/56 bit encryption selected (since one of my networked computers has winXP).

- I'm trying to share my whole F drive on the network. The owner of this drive in the advanced security settings is listed as "Paul" (my account - which is an administrator).

- I go to F: properties and select the sharing tab. It says "F:\ Shared". Clicking on advanced, I see that the "Share this folder" box is checked and if I click on the "Permissions" button I see that is has just one Group called "Everyone" and it has all three "allow" checkmarks (Full Control, Change, Read).

- I go to the "Security" tab and it shows "Everyone" with Full control. To make sure I click on "Advanced", "Permissions tab", "Change Permissions", highlight "Everyone", check the box that says "Replace all child object permissions ..." then click on "Edit". Then I make sure every checkmark is on "Allow" and click "OK".

But then when I go to another computer on the network, I find that I can read all the folders of the F drive, but I can't write to any of them. I guess I must have missed at least one small detail, but I can't think of what.

My PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and I have shared a few folders using advanced sharing. I have given 'Everyone' read permission to the folder. To test this I use my laptop which is running the same OS, press WinKey+R and enter \\<IP-address>. Windows then prompts me for username and password. The same happens if I try to connect directly to the directory by entering \\<IP-address>\<directory>. How can I access my files without having to log in with my account on the PC that is sharing files? All I wan't to do is to give ANYone on the network read permissions. They shouldn't have to authenticate.

Answer:Public read permission in SMB share

Thanks for your reply!

The reason that I can't use authentication is that I will be hosting a file server for a LAN gaming event, and it has to be really easy for the clients so they don't have to make adjustments. I think I should just stick with a local web server.

You said that those steps were necessary to make Windows 7 work with older servers, but the thing is, both the server and the client that I have been testing are running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Hi,

I recently changed my work computer from a Win7 to a Win10 computer. All our network shares are kept on one old Win2K3 server (I know old, but I'm not in charge of upgrading that).

From my Win10 computer I cannot access two network shares out of several needed. The error says that I don't have any permissions. At the same time I can access them from my Win7 computer.

I checked a few suggestions from google (turn on network discovery, file sharing - on, pasword protected sharing, ...) no luck. Most of the suggestions found are for a scenario where I couldn't access any network shares. But this is not the case. Only two are giving me trouble. Even the way permission is granted is the same for all shares - a Security Group in our AD. I also tried changing AllowInsecureGuestAuth in the registry - nothing.

It was fine till some updates got installed. I've uninstalled them (except KB3211320, which cannot be uninstalled) of them and it worked for a while. Till the next updates (which were only for MS Office and not for Windows).

Any ideas?

Answer:Network share has no permission in Win10, but has in Win7

Why is sharing so hard on windoze???

I have tried everything I could find to get this to work. Seems like renaming the user in 7 has caused the problem. Sharing works fine on a new user that I created but will not work on the renamed account. I even tried this

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistanetworking/thread/cc1d74af-f739-4070-84fb-86319d103cc9

with no joy.

I would like to keep all the settings in the non sharing renamed account. Can it be copied into a new account then deleted or fixed?

All three users, Barb, Bob, Brian, in the advertising department received 'denied access' and 'you need permission to perform this action' while attempting to access the share folder-files 'srv-adv' on the domain server 2008 r2.

In the share security I gave Barb, Bob, Brian and the administrator full control. That did not work. I received 'denied access' and 'you need permission to perform this action'.
However after I added and gave Everyone full control the three workers in advertising were able to access the shared folders and files. I thought by given just the advertising workers full permission that would have been sufficient. Not so, I had to add Everyone with full permissions.

I then created an 'advertising' group and added to that group Administrator, Barb, Bob, Brian and gave them full permissions.

I am stuck at this point. Do I remove from the share 'srv-adv' each user and then add the group 'advertising' to the share? What I want to do is to have the users added to advertising group unfettered access to the share 'srv-adv'.

And because I encountered 'denied access' and 'you need permission to perform this action' what "member of" do I add to advertising group without having to add 'Everyone' with full permissions?

PS I created only the group 'advertising' and did not create a 'group policy'. I don't know is that makes a difference.

Thanks

Answer:you need permission to perform this action with access denied at share

Go through Setup Shared Folder in Windows Server 2012 to see if sharing is setup properly.

However, check whether these users/group has sufficient NTFS permissions too (security tab)

Hi everyone,

I just want to ask, how am I supposed to add specific PC connected on my LAN.

see Image below.

you see, on the Properties of my hard drive > on the sharing tab > advance sharing > permission > then I want to add one. I'm stuck on entering the object name.. what I want to enter is my Other Laptop connected on my network.. by the way the hard drive I want to share is on my Desktop.

Answer:Hard Drive Permission to Share Specific PC on Network. Help

It's ok, you have done what needed to be done from the desktop. Close everything saved the disk properties window.

You now need to go on the laptop and in its My Computer window you need to click on "map a network drive", you select a drive letter (anyone is fine), and write the address you see in the sharing tab of the disk \\Jhude-pc\I in your casein the "folder" field. Or click on Browse and select it (writing it is faster).

In case you want to give the shared drive a more descriptive name than just "I", go in the advanced sharing tab and click on Add, write the name in the "share name", the click Ok and select that name from the drop down menu. Note how the address in the sharing tab is now different.

Searched thru post, lots of near misses but no solution to my issue. Only on windows 10 does this problem exist.
I connect office equipment to customers pcs/networks. I use a script to create a hidden/special user that has admin permissions plus makes me a share folder. I then share out the folder with read/write permissions for the hidden user. It works great for days or weeks...until what seems to be win10 updates come across and my permission gets removed. The user is still there, the folder is still shared, but my user no longer works. If I create another user the same way, it works again until some time later.
Now the kicker is, this only happens on about 5% of my customers, other win10 installs have worked and still work. Its only some computers doing this. When I look at share permissions, full access is on. Now I have not tried the "everyone" permission.
Any suggestions?

Hi, just a very general suggestion:
Try temporarily blocking Windows updates on an affected PC
Windows Update Automatic Updates - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Then when the others change, check that one.

Continue with a process of elimination.

This is a really strange problem that I have. I don't know what it is, but when I create a file from an application such as paint, gimp, notepad, unity, anything really with a name of "Reset" or "Security" I have no permission to it. Like if I name a file with that name, it becomes out of my permission as adminstrator.

Attached is a screenshot showing that the file has no groups once created.

The reason why this is a big problem for me is because a lot of programs are not working right. Any file on my computer with "Reset" or "Security" will not work as I have to add myself to a group which has a permission through the security tab in the properties of the file.

This is just as confusing as it sounds, but I need this to be fixed to finish a project in Unity. My game cannot be saved as Unity creates a file called "Mono.Security.dll" which makes the saving process screw up. This has been bugging me for a bit now, but I need this to stop.

There's probably other filenames that create the problem, but these are 2 that I have figured out.

If you have questions, just ask.

Thank you!

When trying to add users to a shared folder, on a server, a problem occurs in that instead of showing the user name in the security tab of the folder we get the SID (S-1-5-21-####). This happens for all users we try to add. And for users in the same and different domains. We can sign on to the users PC/servers and the server with the shared folder with no problem . There seems to be no problems with the users PC/server. The user from another domain can see a shared folder, on another server, in the same domain as the server with the problem.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

Similar issues have been posted to this and other forums in the past, but I will describe my specific situation here as I believe the circumstances are somewhat different from those described in other threads:

I have a USB hard drive connected to my Linksys EA 3500 router and am trying to create a link to it from one specific laptop via WIFI in Windows 10 Build 14965. I also have a second laptop where I had no difficulty (same Win 10 build) creating a share to the USB drive.

When I try to create a share, using either \\192.168.1.1 or \\LinkSys17963, the task aborts with the following error message:

\\LinkSys17693 is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
A specific logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated.

Because I have no issues creating shares to the drive from the other laptop or from the 3 other computers on my network, I believe there must be a problem on the laptop in question.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this gratefully accepted.

A specific logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated.

Because I have no issues creating shares to the drive from the other laptop or from the 3 other computers on my network, I believe there must be a problem on the laptop in question.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this gratefully accepted.

If you cannot create connection to existing share try this:

net use x: \\ipaddr\sharename /persistent:yes

Answer:Unable to create a share

Hi,
I Found same discussion and the possible solution given is as below.

I opened the "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" and clicked the
"Restore defaults" button, and that solved the problem, and I can now share
files again.

If somebody has the same problem, you should try that out.

I have kodi running on a raspberry pi in the living room and want to stream my music from the pc upstairs. I have previously used a smb share but the kodi forums says an NFS share is more reliable.

The problem is I'm using windows 7 and have no idea how to create an nfs share, I download some unix features from the Microsoft site but it wouldn't work for 64 bit windows and I can't see another version on there site.

Can anyone suggest any way I can create this share?

Answer:"Cannot Create Share Memory"

Sounds like you need to increase what used to be called "virutal memory" - don't know its title on XP. Look in your help for virtual memory and see how to increase it.

Hello all:

I bought an Intel Pocket camera a few years ago and have been updating my software accordingly because I still want to use the product. The Camera is a model CS630 and I have the latest software upgrade on disc. My problem is this:

I had to change out some hard drives due to a malfunction of my brain. I am trying to re-install the software but as soon as it goes from the installer to the actual installation, I get a message that says I don't have enough memory to run the program. It says that it needs at least 32mb and it reports that I only have -1042mb of memory. I have four gigabytes of ram installed on my motherboard and it says I don't have enough? I don't understand how it's reporting negative memory. How can I get the software to "see" my memory? I would appreciate whatever help you may suggest or provide as I really like using my camera.

Thanks in advance:

I have the above program on my computer, but have NEVER been able to use it. When I tried to configure it, got through most of it and then got to testing modem and said no modem detected. What do I do. I had also got the message that not registered with primary directory services cannot receive from anyone on that service.

I have e-mailed Intel services to inquire about this and have not been given the courtesy of a reply back from them. Kind of makes you wonder.

Each have differnet support answers. Also, we can look for the latest drivers, to see if that is the cause.

Windiws 7 works perfectly for all of my programs but I only have one problem and of course it is the most annoying. I use an old version of WS FTP, I love it, their newer versions suck and I do not like using any other FTP program as this old version has all of the options I need exactly where I want them and been using it for many years so I refuse to switch,This program uses a directory named "Storage" to temporarily store files. This is used in case I want to peek at a website file without having to download it to my computer. For some reason Windows 7 assigns "special permissions" to this Storage directory. When I go into properties and try to change the permissions, when I click apply it removes my custom settings to allow writing to the folder. Is there a way to overwrite this so the program can save files to this Storage directory? So odd that every single program works except this one thing.

Answer:For a folder permission?

Ha sweet I got it to work! I just deleted that folder, created a new one with the same name and dragged it into that same directory and now it works :D

Hello Members
When moving whole albums of songs that I have bought from XBox music store over to my OneDrive Music folder, how should the folders be created for and artist and there album, so that the XBox music phone app (Groove) see the albums and stream them directly from my OneDrive music folder.
I. e Say I had 2 UB40 albums, one called TwentyFourSeven, the other Dub Sessions, how would I save both these albums correctly in my OneDrive music folder?
Help would be great please

Answer:What folder structure do I create in the OneDrive Music folder?

I'm no expert because I don't stream my music off OneDrive...
I would assume you simply make Music Folder in OneDrive. Then you copy over the folders as they appear in your Music folder on your PC. This assumes you let a program like Media Player index them first...

DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums

Hi! I do not know when and why did this happen but whoever invented this paranoid (hidemysecretsfrommywife) control system of sharing and permissions should be declared as the Enemy of Mankind, or the Antichrist!
I can understand that one wants to protect C: from malwares. But have you seen a malware attacking an external drive???

I have Windows7, I have an external drive where I store all my pictures taken and my music files. I already tried everything advanced sharing and so on. Still: I can only create a new folder with a right click in the drive or inside existing folders but I can not do anything else. The disk is write protected, check write permissions.
In fact, the disk isn't write protected.

If I create a new folder, I can put in it and do whatever I want inside the new folder. But I have no permission to do anything outside a new folder, i.e. with my original media files!

Why? Who does benefit from this? What is this craziness???

Answer:[SOLVED] No permission to create/ move, copy, delete files in external hard drive

Hi akofalvi.

Try this:

1. Start > Run "cmd" (this opens a command prompt window)
2. type--> diskpart (this will open another command window in a few seconds)
3. type--> list volume (this will list all of the volumes currently recognized in your system)
4. type--> select volume # (this number is going to be your external drive)
5. type--> attributes disk clear readonly

I will say this: this procedure has been met with mixed results and your problem may return. Some have even had this issue and it turned out to be a setting in Windows Media Player of all things (whoda thunk?) One responder in a forum had this to say about this very problem: what i found to fix this was to remove the settings in media player allowing it to re-organize and rename files, after which i went to the tools/advanced/restore media library and allowed it to dump my current library and reset it. That's just an FYI.

I hope that'll help. Let me know.

Good day!

Mike

PS: As an afterthought, you may need to log in to the REAL administrator account (which needs to be activated manually) and set your permissions there for your regular user name. We'll go down that path if the above procedure doesn't net you anything positive.

Hello,

Firstly I apologise because I know there is so much written about this subject. However at the same time, when one cannot find the solution after literally hours, one must get help! I have thrown the towel in as they say, put the white flag up and here I am..

I have 4 PC's all with Win 7 Pro. I have access to web via cable via a CG3000 router.

All boxes belong to same named 'Workgroup'

Under Explorer/Network tree all boxes and drives can be seen.

All drives on all boxes are already Shared with small shared icons showing on drive's name in tree and all passwords are off.

All permissions are set for full use as I am the only one here who uses them.

Problem.

Whene evr I go to a drive on any box from any box, I get the dreaded ..

'Windows cannot access etc..

I have turned off, router, boxes and left and re created and joined a Homegroup but this only got me to the Public etc folders. I need to get to all boxes and all drives/folders.

It was hard in Dos and got easier thru 3.1 etc until it was a piece of cake in XP

Now it is a nightmare.

I was advided to not have a Homegroup so had all the PC's leave the Home Network. It does not exists anymore.

I have Googled and read all day but am still not clearer.

I still see all the folders in each box from every box but as soon as I click to see the files in the folders get the NO Access panel.

I can see and access all the Public User folders but not the drives and other folders.

I need to access many folders on man... Read more

Hi there,

Ok, I've just finished my project and I go to click on Share and then clicked on Create Disc and it comes up with the message "Failed to intialize internal modules" and then proceeds to lock up, meaning I have to press Ctrl, Alt and Del to quit the program.

I have been using MPEG-2 files for this project and the error message still appears even when using one of the VS10+ default videos. This is the first time this has happened to me.

I have also tried reinstalling the software completely from the ground up, using a different hardware profile and trying other video filetypes but to no avail. I was also advised on the manufacturer's forums that this may be due to "packet-writing software". Below is a quote from the forums.

Do you have any packet-writing software installed, like Nero's InCD or an equivalent unit of the Roxio Easy Media Creator package? It in effect takes control of the computer burner and denies access to it by other programs such as VS. If you have InCD installed (and it will show up in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs as a separate item), you have to completely uninstall it. The Roxio module can be internally disabled without uninstalling...Click to expand...

The only software which I have on my computer which is something similar is Sonic RecordNow! which has always been on my computer and doesn't seem to have ever interferred with VS10+. I have always used this software to write DVD Disc Imag... Read more

I recently lost permission to one of my folders (Pictures folder) and the all contents inside. I still have Read and Execute rights, but I lost all others. I don't know if it has anything to do with Homegroup sharing because I recently set up a Homegroup and shared the folder. I removed the folder from sharing but it didn't fix the problem.

Something odd I noticed was in the Properties->Security tab, where it lists all users who have access to the folder, it lists Account Unknown followed by a long string. Normally it lists [my name]\[computer name] or SYSTEM. I have a feeling that the unknown account is actually my account, but somehow the computer is not recognizing that fact. I tried to manually edit permission to give the unknown account full control but it wouldn't let me do it (access denied error).

I could just live without it, I can probably create a new pictures folder and move all the files, but I'd like to know how to fix the problem.

Answer:Lost permission of a folder

Hello dfvx,

Take ownership of the folder, then see if you may be able to set permissions afterwards.

Hope this helps,

You will want to use the inherit permissions box for this. The tutorial below explains the process.

In order to have the same permissions on every machine you would need to add those machines to a User group which has the desired permissions set.

I'm the person I'm supposed to be asking for permission? I created a folder on the desktop when I was in the agonizing throes of trying to set up Windows 7. I now want to delete the folder. The problem is that there are files in it that I'm told cannot be deleted without getting permission from myself. This is very frustrating, as I don't know where to go to grant myself this permission. I've looked at Help and Support, which goes through the process of telling me what permissions ARE, but not how I can grant one to myself.

I have tried booting up in safe mode. That didn't work. I tried going to the command prompt as an administrator. No dice. I don't know what else to do. The folder only has 3 mb in it now, but its annoying as all get out not to be able to give myself permission to get rid of something that I created.

I am trying to delete a folder on an external hard disk that was created on another computer. First it tells me that I need administrator permissions to modify it, which I grant. Then it tells me that I need permission from dougal\robert to do so, dougal\robert being my own user account on the machine I am using. I have given full control in the security settings both to administrators and myself, but nothing will enable me to delete this folder. How do I get rid of the thing?

Hello Everyone, because I didn't want people to access my files and I needed to leave my PC turned on in the office, I went to my drive E properties, then security tab then edit and switched my controls from Full control "Allow" to "Deny" locked with a password. I checked it wasn't opening. There we go! Success.
Later on
Failure;
Because now even though I have the password removed, I re-installed my windows 7 to the same 32-bit version. It isn't opening
I changed the controls from full control "Deny" to "Allow" but I can't get access to them. I tried opening it somehow(don't exactly remember how) but still if I have to open up any of the files, I'll have to go to that particular sub folder and file to the properties, security tab, allow full controls and then it opens.
Now I have more than 8 thousand files in it.
Moreover, after re-installing my windows, I can't open my files anyway.
Can someone please help me. I'm assuming this website will notify me if someone leaves a reply to this thread.

Hello all, first post here as I've spent months researching this in my spare time and have exhausted my patience on trying to figure this out on my own, so I very much appreciate any assistance I can get!

So as to not try and write a novel here I'm going to give as brief of a description as I can while still giving enough info.

Situation:

I have a desktop with the C: drive being most of my day to day items, and the E: drive being a TB drive that stores my music, movies, pictures, etc. A few years ago when I first started dating my now wife, I had decided since she would use this computer from time to time it would be smart of me to lock one of the folders with pictures of ex's (the kind that would get me into trouble with a new g/f if you catch my drift) and basically forgot about it. Fast forward to today, and we are happily married, and as I was going through that TB drive I came across the folder. I decided I wanted to delete it, as well as take one last look just in case there was anything else in there I might still want to keep. That's when I came across the issue of not having the privileges to open/close/copy/delete this folder.

I am the administrator on the computer, I've tried taking ownership of the folder using a variety of techniques including going to command prompt and using: takeown/F E:\media\specials\Misc. << the root of the folder in question, all to no avail. When I tried the takeown command I get "Error: the system cannot find the file ... Read more

Take ownership of a file or folder: User Rights; Security Policy; Security Services

Hi

I have changed the folder permission and the folder font has changed into green color. Then i am trying to change the permission it is not changing.

Please help me

Answer:Changing the folder permission

Hello sripa, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Green text for the file/folder name indicates that you have encrypted it. The tutorial below can help show you how to decrypt it so that it will no longer have the green text anymore.

Windows 8.1 running on C drive with all my back up/pervious folder/files on D drive from Windows 7. No issues initially.
Windows 8.1 developed operations issues and bugs a few months ago such as intermittently not allowing access to folders so I wiped C drive and reloaded again.
Currently I have tried to access some picture files, being the ones that were most likely modified /saved to D drive by the original Windows 8.1 and I cannot. Oddly enough it seems I have full access to documents and music folders/files on same D drive and the earliest picture pre first Windows 8.1 and latest pictures save buy current Windows 8.1.
When I click on the files in question, a window opens:
You don’t currently have permission to access this folder

I then click on “Continue”. The next window opens:
You have been denied permission to access this folder

I then click on “security tab” The next window opens: with tabs for General, Sharing, Security, Customise. I have clicked:

“General” to see; size: 0 bytes, Attributes: Read-only (selected), clicked Advanced… to see allow files in the folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties (selected). No encrypt or other attributes has been selected.
“Security” to see “You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object.”, clicked Advance to see Owner: Unable to display current owner. I click on the corresponding Change prompt and go through procedure to take owner ship of file. When I attempt to... Read more

My xp laptop had recently crash, but the my hard drive is still intact. I have a windows 8 computer now and I am trying to transfer the memory, but when I try to access the xp hard drive from windows 8 computer, I cannot access it. I get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" message. Please help me get access to the hard drive.

Answer:You don't currently have permission to access this folder

Hello DJCool, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might see if taking ownership of the XP drive with the Replace owner of subcontainers and objects box checked, then set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full control" of the drive may allow you to have access afterwards.

(Option Three)
Take Ownership of a File, Folder, Drive, or Registry Key in Windows 8

(Option Two)
Permissions - Allow or Deny Access to Users and Groups in Windows 8
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Admin/Mod: Sorry I don?t know which section to appropriately post this message..

I have a HDD powered by USB which is included in the router.

In the USB I created a Music folder which included many subfolders. In some of these subfolders I can create another sub-subfolders or Drag and Drop some music. However, in some subfolders, I CAN?T. I CAN?T even Delete the song. The computer has a pop-up that says: ?you need permission to perform this action?. Now in the Music folder I CAN?T create another subfolder! I?m the sole admin of this computer.

Could you pls tell me Why and show me How to be able to solve this problem. Thanks.

Answer:Folder-Subfolder & Permission

I Am not sure of the reason for this but i have had the same problem and this is what I did to fix it,

right click on your folder and go to properties
then click the security tab and click "Advanced"
It will open a new window and click the "Owner" tab
then click "edit" (you will need Admin Privileges)
Under the "Change owner to:" click your User Name.
Check the "Replace owner on sub-containers and objects" box
Then click OK, And Go to Permissions Tab
Click the username that u just created as the Owner and click "edit"
It will give you a list of permissions and just check the ones you want ( i use "full control")

And that should give you access.
Hope it helps.

Hello
As the topic says I cant delete a folder. It says i need permission, but i have taken ownership of the folder and gave me full control over it but the same thing happens.
The folder i am trying to delete is a temp folder with the name "vsTemp19" it?s around 5,5 gb big and i have no idea how it got there.
So is there anything i can do like a software that can delete it or something?

Edit: Did a virus scan with nod32 v4 and it found nothing.

Answer:Can´t Delete Folder. You Need Permission.....

Try turning off UAC reboot and you should be able to delete it then.

Hi!

With Windows 7, I could create a shortcut for utorrent pointing to an utorrent.exe of a different account. (uTorrent installs to appdata) Since Windows 8, I can't create (or rewrite) this shortcut, because I don't have automatic permission to access the folders of a different account. I have to manually press "continue" in explorer or "as administrator" in total commander when exploring these folders.
What can I do?

I am trying to delete a folder on an external hard disk that was created on another computer. First it tells me that I need administrator permissions to modify it, which I grant. Then it tells me that I need permission from dougal\robert to do so, dougal\robert being my own user account on the machine I am using. I have given full control in the security settings both to administrators and myself, but nothing will enable me to delete this folder. How do I get rid of the thing?

Answer:Need permission from myself to delete a folder but I can't get it

Try File Assassin - it usually gets the job done.

I have a home network with 4 computers, everything seems to work fine and i can see the folders i share on each of them.
Now, what i need is this:
I have one folder which i want to be visible only between 2 computers not 4, one with vista and one with XP.
Their names are MyPC and MyLAPTOP
When I try to set permission for my desktop to access my laptop for a specific folder, i only have few options like Administrator, everyone, guest..., and if i try to add MyPC in the window "enter the object name" on the laptop it says "an object name MyPC cannot be found".
How would i set only the desktop to "see" just that folder?
Hope I have been clear enough....

Answer:how to set permission in shared folder?

You don't establish rights by pc but by user.

You would create a user [or users] on the pc containing the share the same as you logon the other pc/laptop with. You would give this account(s) rights and deny everyone else to this share.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere - if it has I couldn't find it - but I'm using Windows 7 and there seems to be two icons for My Documents. When I double click one of them I get the message 'You do not have permission to access this folder' which is very annoying especially since this used to happen with Vista and I'd hoped MS would've fixed the problem. Are there any solutions?

Answer:You do not have permission to access this folder!

The location of XP folders like Documents & Settings and History are no longer in the same place. They are displayed when ?hidden files? are displayed but they are ?Junctions?, i.e. they are there for historical reasons so that old programs that would normally use them are redirected to the new Vista and Windows 7 locations. Junctions can be recognised by having a little padlock on the icon and cannot be accessed. You can see a list of these folders using a command prompt. Click the Windows Orb (Start) > Run, type cmd /k dir /al (note the three spaces) and press Enter. The results will be a list of all the Junctions for the user folders, showing the name of the old XP user folder and the name of the new folder in brackets.

I just took over a factory that had there engineer managing the network and this guy made a mess of the network. One thing we have discovered and I have never seen before is when you add a person to the folder permission of a master folder it won't propagate down to all the sub-folders and files even though when setting his permission it's told to do so. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening it or what's causing it. I have double checked everything and cross referenced it with there other factory and everything is setup the same but we have no problems at the other factory. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Folder Permission Issue

The folders and files underneath that folder have to have "Include Inheritable Permissions" checked in order for changes to the parent folder to propagate down.

You can either take ownership of the files, or add yourself to the group that owns it. there is a shortcut to take ownership here. Take Ownership Shortcut

Hi folks,
First, yes I have searched the forum and looked at other threads with the same error message but haven't found anything that helps. If I've missed something relevant please let me know.

System
Acer Aspire all in one
Win 7 Home premium 64 bit SP1

Problem description.
I am re-deploying a computer. I created a new admin user, then deleted all existing users. After a lot of sweat I found out about and applied the hotfix for KB article 2866086 and now all but the original admin users profile directories stay deleted!!!

However I still can't get rid of the original admin user's files. I have gone through the change ownership routine and turned UAC off but all that has done is that now when I log in as the new admin and try to delete the files I am told that I need permission from the login I'm currently using!!!

To add to my confusion, properties shows the root directory (C:Users/Old admin name) as containing > 7000 files and > 1000 folders. It is also shown with a lock symbol on the root folder although it is not shared. If there was a file equivalent in Windows for 'kill -9' I would have nuked the bloody thing.

I've even tried explaining that if it doesn't behave I'll re-program it with an axe, but Win 7 developers obviously haven't read The Hitchhikers Guide.

Short of reinstalling the OS from scratch has anyone got any useful suggestions?

Thanks in anticipation

Answer:Don't have permission to access folder - yet again

When I've run into stubborn cases I have booted to a Linux LiveCD or LiveDVD and deleted from within its file manager. Booting Windows next may give some squacks but running a reputable Registry cleaner helps. Many say not to use such a program but I've had no problems doing so. I don't use it until nothing else works and never as a routine thing.
