Sharing a connection with an old MS-DOS 6.22 machine

Question: Sharing a connection with an old MS-DOS 6.22 machine

I have a Compaq Portable II running MS-DOS 6.22 (from a 20, count'em, 20 megabyte hard drive). For retrocomputing purposes, I'd like to run DosLynx, ssh/telnet and a (yet to be defined) IRC client on it.
I can't connect it straight to my router (too far away, impractical to run a cable), so I want to connect it to my main computer, running Windows 7 x64 and with a wifi link to the router.
I configured connection sharing in win7, then found a DOS packet driver for the ethernet card in the Portable II (an AMD PCNET one). Said driver apparently works (I run it with INT=0x60 and it autodetects the other settings), but then I've no idea what to do. Doslynx reports a DHCP error every time I try connecting to a website.

Little help?

Preferred Solution: Sharing a connection with an old MS-DOS 6.22 machine

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Sharing a connection with an old MS-DOS 6.22 machine

DOS probably can't handle what you are trying to feed it and/or just not going to happen via Win7, M$ is a fan of end of life support cycles... and this is way beyond...

Good luck though, I was an old QEMM guru back in the day.

I have a client that has an existing XP desktop which is using a Verizon Wireless broadband device for an internet connetion (no other broadband available in the area). So he simply connects to it wirelessly and he gets his internet.

Complication starts here. He just got a Windows 7 laptop and needs to share the internet connection of the Verizon device. Only problem is that the laptop is out of range of the verizon device. So, we have a Linksys wireless router that is connected to the XP machine and gives us the range we need to reach the laptop.

My trouble is that I can't get any sort of connection between the two computers. They are on the same workgroup and I have enabled everything in the sharing options on the Win7 machine. My goal is to have the Win7 laptop connect to the XP machine and share the internet connection and printer and files etc...

Here is a diagram of the situation. I've had one person tell me he doesn't think it's possible. But I bet there is a way.

Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Internet Connection Sharing with XP machine

Going purely by the pic, wouldn't it work better if you cable the Linksys to the VZW device? then have both W7 and XP connect to the Linksys wireless for internet and sharing?

Anyway, can you provide ipconfig /all details for the W7 and XP machine, this might help paint a picture of why you cannot connect from W7 to XP.

G'day all! (first post here!! :P)

Ok..so this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

:S

Thanx all!!

Answer:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

any help?

We have two desktop computers, both running Windows XP in our house. They both share a wireless broadband internet connection which works perfectly but I don't understand why file and printer sharing doesn't work. I think I have this (almost) working. I want to share my main computer W7 D drive with a laptop that is older and can't upgrade which is XP. I have got the XP seeing the D drive on the main computer, but when I try to access it I get the following.

"\\Familydesktop\d is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permision.

Ok so on the Familydesktop (W7) this is what I setup. under computer I choose the "D" drive right click.
I choose "share with", advanced sharing, and the button Advanced sharing.
checked the box for "share this folder"
Permission "Everyone"
Then when I get out of the advanced sharing window, back to the network window I choose "network & sharing center"
turned off "Password protect sharing".
I have double checked this setup.

On the old laptop (XP)I went to properties of "my computer", Computer Name.
Chose "Change" and changed from mshome to workgroup.
restarted computer
Control panel.. "Network setup wizard"checked box to "Ignore disconnected hardware"
chose Residential Gateway
made sure computer name was ok, and changed from mshome to workgroup.
Turned on file/printer sharing.
then finished out of this wizard.

Can anyone see where else I need permissions set?

I'm not sure what's going on here, everything appears to be setup correctly.

I have gone through my Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7RC and turned everything on except Password Protected Sharing.

I have joined both Win7 and Xp machines into WORKGROUP.

I can access my Public folder and my shared printer from my Win7 machine on my XP machine.

I'm trying to share my Mp3 folder, thats on a secondary HDD in my Win7 machine. Path being "E:\Stuff\Mp3z". No matter what I change as far as permissions, adding HomeGroupuser$ to the Advanced Sharing dialog...everything I've tried, my XP machine can see the share, but I get the ".......is not accessable. You may not have permissions...." error in XP trying to open the shared folder.

It should work as is, anyone else know why it might not be?
And what's up with not having a folder icon with a Share symbol in Win7 so by looking in Explorer you can tell a folder is shared?

Hello,

Im trying to create a network between two laptops; one has a DVD drive (Windows 7) and the other doesnt (Windows XP), all I want to do is make the DVD drive accessible by the Windows XP machine - youd think it would be easy? Apparently not.
I cant get the two to be on the same network, no matter what I do to the workgroup name or anything; they both have the same workgroup name but nothing is happening, both have all the sharing settings correct (or so I believe) but nothing is happening.
I dont want to share photos, documents, music or even movies - I just want the DVD drive.

Is this possible? If so how? Im getting so frustrated with it.

Thanks for any help

Hi folks,

I have a small work network setup:

4 x W7 machines
1 x XP Pro SP3 machine

The XP machine shares a .qbw (QuickBooks Pro 2010) company file, and the machine appears on the network, and all machines can see it.

They are all in the same Workgroup, Permissions on the XP file/folder are setup fine, with 'Everyone' having full access.

On double clicking the shared folder on any of the W7 machines, it prompts you for a password.

The dialogue box titled 'Windows Security' states:

Code:
Enter Network Password
Enter your password to connect to: MACHINEX
Username:
Password:
So I try no user/pass and it won't let me in, I try a user account from MACHINEX (the XP machine) using the domain and correct password - it does not work.

Please help as this damn annoying, and really should be straightforward to share between to Windows machines on a Microsoft network...

I constantly get a "Denied Access" message when trying to open certain folders in windows explorer. All these folders have a small arrow across the top left corner of their icon. IE I cannot access the Videos folder but if I go via the libraries option then all is ok.

I have tried changing the sharing options several times but it just seems like there is a master control holding things back.

Hi Lee,

How's Brisbane? I'm planning to head over there for Qantm College.

Seems like you have lost ownership magically. Are you able to right click the affected folders and choose 'take ownership'? If you have UAC enabled, disable it (slider all the way to the lowest setting) temporarily to get that Administrator prompt out of the way for a bit. You can re-enable it later.

The correct command to connect a drive letter to a shared drive is:

I had a hard disc fail on My XP Professional machine. I was running Locoscript on virtual machine. I had a backups of the vhd file (and others).
My replacement machine is Windows 7 with a virtual machine with integrated XP (and no floppy drive). I have successfully created a DOS image and I can read and update the Locoscript database.
However, my long-term plan was always to download the Locoscript database, do some conversion, and load it to Access - I did do design and initial testing of an Access database, but I've not revisited it for a bit..
The next step is to get the data out virtual DOS image, as an ASCII file. See alsobelow
Q1 How can I get the data out of VM?! (Is there a way?)
I have no other plans for the DOS VM apart from continuing to update the Locoscript short-termn and subsequently extracting its data to elsewhere..I don't know what version of DOS I'm on, nor how to find out. Ah! Theres'a a folder C:MSDOS 6.

Q2 What would you recommend either of these as a way forward?

My new employer recently gave me a laptop with Win2K on it and I can not get it to access a shared folder on my home machine that has Win XP Pro on it. I am doing this over my 802.11b network at home.

The message I receive when I double click on the icon for my Win XP machine in networking neighborhood on my Win2K machine is "The network place could not be added because the following error has occurred: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request." I have never scene this type of error before and have no idea how to resolve it.

As background, my Win XP Pro machine is part of a simple workgroup I created via the "Set up a Home Network" wizard in Win XP. However, my work network is on a domain - I am not sure what that means but when I log onto my work machine, the Win2K laptop, I have to type [email protected][domain name] which I believe means we use a "domain-based network.

Any advice on how I can resolve this problem would be much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Problems File Sharing from Win2K to XP Pro Machine

What it sounds like you need to do is to log on to the work laptop "Locally" instead of trying to log onto the domain. I don't know how it is even letting you log into the domain. Since if you are at home you wouldn't have a domain controller avail to log onto. But anyway, try logging in on that local machine and also make sure that workgroup is set to workgroup. Unless your XP machine has got a workgroup named something other than workgroup. If so, named the laptop workgroup the same.

I'm working on getting into Internet Connection Sharing (ICS from now one). I'm doing this for a number of reasons: I do have a network switch I hook my computer into. But, for a period of time each night, I have to unplug it. Don't ask me why. It's a long story. I do have wireless adapters that I use. However, they stopped being fully functional when we got a new wifi. But, we're not returning the wifi because all the laptops and smartphones can connect without any issues. Instead, I have opted to connect my desktop to my laptop via ICS and share the laptop's wifi. I was able to configure the IP addresses and Mask so that I could see the shared folders between the two computers. That's about as far as I got. How do I make it so the laptop shares it's internet connection with the desktop?

My current settings:
Overall:
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

Desktop (link to laptop):
IP: 192.168.1.11
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

Laptop:
Link to Desktop
IP: 192.168.1.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

Link to WiFi
IP: 192.168.1.3
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

I thought I might need to tweak the setting in ICS under the Settings button. But, I wasn't sure which IP address to use (most online instructions state that DHCP will assign the addresses and don't go in-depth or they have a rather bizarre IP setup).

Hi,
I have windows 7 Pro installed. I have a DSL connection that requires a username and password. I have read the tutorials for setting up ICS in windows 7, but it is not working for me. In my 'change adapter settings' page, I have 3 connections: LAN, Wireless and M 1 (this is the dial-up for the username and password). Here's what I have done:

I have enabled ICS for M 1, and created an ad-hoc wireless connection called 'M network'. I basically want to share my wired connection with my iPhone. Everything is ok as far as connecting my iPhone to M network, but when I try to use the internet, all i get is a 'connecting' message on my phone, and it doesnt go any further. I have used this network before to connect 'air mouse' on my phone that lets me use my phone as a touchpad. It still works fine that way, but I cant use internet.

I have even tried enabling the ICS on LAN instead, but got the same results.

Am I doing something wrong?

This is just plain weird...! Here is what is happening. I have three PCs all on the same MS Home network, not password protected. Connected via Netgear router

Windows 7 x64 machine 'A' - Ethernet
Windows 7 x64 machine 'B' - Wireless only
Winxows XP SP3 laptop - Ethernet

Win7 'A' has a range of shared folders the other two can access at will throughout the day.

I can spend all day randomly accessing Win7 'A's shared folders from the XP laptop and everything is working fine. BUT If Win7 'B' accesses the shared folders on Win7 'A' then trying to access afterwards from XP laptop fails with a "//Win7APC is unavailable, contact network admin etc. etc." fault pop-up.

Doesn't matter what I do, the laptop just won't connect after Win7 'B' has been accessing 'A's files.

Looking the other way (once this fault occurs) Win7 'A' can see and access the Shared folder on the XP laptop and write and modify anything within fine..

Only solution I have found is to reboot Win7 'A' then all is well, the laptop can access again as normal.

So Win7 'B' accessing the Win7 'A' files seems to be causing the loss of access to the laptop. I should add that the accesses are not simultaneous. I have tried this with the laptop idle while 'B' accesses 'A' and then once 'B' is finished and not connected I try to access once more from the laptop - it produces the same fault. Only the rebooting of 'A' will cure it.

Any ideas why a simple folder access from another machine on the networ... Read more

I'm using a setup where I have an ethernet connection on my host (Windows 8.1) set to share with a Hyper-V internal switch, then my VM (Windows Server 2008) connects to that. It works for a while (i.e. I can connect to the internet on my VM), but then not only does it stop working, it also kills my host's connection and I have to restart my machine. It doesn't leave any errors in either machine's event log when it happens.
And to clarify, when I say a while, it's not really any specific amount of time. Sometimes it happens as soon as I log on to the VM, and sometimes I can connect to my VPN and work for as long as 5-10 minutes. Can't seem to find any common cause for it happening.

To clarify further, when I say kills the connection, I should probably point out that the connection continues to display as "connected to the internet" in the network and sharing center. It just doesn't work (won't open any URLs, Skype goes down, etc.)

I have a laptop that connects to the internet wirelessly and I want to share the internet by wire to a desktop or say a xbox 360. How do I do it? Thank you.

I have Vista x64 and Xp on the laptop.

Answer:Wireless connection sharing to a wired connection

in theory, you can enable ICS (internet connection sharing) on the wired connection of the desktop. then you run that do a router, or a switch and connect the other devices. (if using a switch you will have to give your devices a static ip, or figure out how to run dhcp on that wired connection on the desktop).. but usually ICS doesn't work very well and breaks all the time.

maybe you can get a wireless bridge, or a hacked os for a wireless router that let's you use it as a bridge.

I'm very hesitant to install a router and one of my servers on the same machine. IDK if this is just because I'm so used to this not being a standard practice, but to me it just seems questionable as to whether it is safe. I would think that it may be possibe for a machine sharing the same NIC to somehow spy on the other mahice using the same shared port.

Anyway, I need to setup some servers for testing and I'm wondering if it will be secure enough to put them all on the same machine (poweredge 2950).

What do you people think about this?

Answer:Router & web server on ESXi machine - is security a major issue b/c of sharing machin

I use ESXi and run pfSense in a VM. It doesn't worry me at all. Since it has two nics I use one for WAN side and then all LAN side stuff shares a single nic.

Make sure you have a link light on the ethernet card. If you do not have link, check the cabling again. If that's OK, plug a different PC in using the same ethernet connections and see if you get link.

Are you sure you have entered all of the IP settings in correctly according to your school? You should double check this. Typing the gateway, DNS, etc. wrong can cause a network connection to be unresponsive.

Go to Start --> Run. Type "winipcfg" and press OK. Do you see your NIC listed in the drop down menu? If so, what is the IP address, etc. state when you select it?

I'd like to watch an SSL communication, with data exchanged, that occurs on my local machine. Is there an app that can intercept this?

Obviously you can't pull this off somewhere between the two endpoints, but since I'm trying to diagnose a problem with a web application, I can run the sniffer on the client machine.

Maybe a browser that will dump data it transacts?

EDIT: ssldump didn't work out for me... I used ethereal in promisc mode on the client machine to capture the packets.

The laptop has no problem with the network/internet with Ethernet. However, unplug the cable the laptop requires frequent 'Network Reset' under Network Status. After the machine resets, prompts for key, it reconnects with the network/internet.
Distance from the router is not an issue.

Answer:Machine loses WiFi connection

It might help if you describe your system and what Wi-Fi adapter you have.  Also, knowing the Status information from when it is working and when it isn't could be very helpful.
If you do not know how to get some of the info, type ncpa.cpl in a run box, then select the adapter and select get the status from the top menu.  Things like IP addresses and other info.
You might also open the Device Manager and check the status of the adapter and see if it shows with a yellow triangle.

So this issue happens consistently when I remote desktop into my work PC. My home PC is Windows 10 and work PC is windows 7. Here is my scenario.

VPN from home PC to work networkWindows Remote Desktop from home PC to work PCGet work done and afterwards disconnect remote desktopGo in to work next day and PC now has no internet connection on any browser
Restart does fix this issue but I am trying to avoid a restart on my work PC.
The error is 'DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET'. After running netsh winsock reset in command line without restarting, I am able to connect to google only.
Ipconfig /release, /renew, and /flushdns does not fix it.
Also there is no proxy running. Pinging websites work.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Hi guys.
I,m having a problem with one machine on my home network.
Everything works fine on every machine in the house so I,m sure there is no problem with my router etc.
I purchased an old machine recently and hooked it up. Works fine, but has recently decided to just dis-connect itself from the internet every now and then.
When I restart it, it reconnects no problem. Then, after a while, it just decides to dis-connect. Restart, re-connect, no problem. After a little while it dis-connects again.
My wireless connection is fine. its only this one machine that seems to be a bit temperamental. Is there something in this machine,s settings that I can check out? Apart from the intermittent wireless connection, it runs like a dream.

Any help, much appreciated.

Hi all,

I'll give you as much background as I can. I'm quite computer illiterate. I had a friend help me build my first computer recently. When we put it together, it worked just fine, with one small flaw: my PSU was one 6-pin connector short of being able to hook everything up. I left my graphics card unconnected and proceeded to use the computer until last night, when we bought a connector cable and hooked in the graphics card. I also bought a seta cable to connect my harddrive (was one cable short, was only using my solid state drive). Started the machine and the graphics card was now working. Switched my monitor over to an HDMI cable and carried on.

That was all that we changed. Since doing this, my internet has been slow to the point of making it unusable. I have 5 bars of signal strength. I also have a laptop set up right next to the computer that works fine on the wireless. I'm not sure if moving around some cable should really effect my internet speeds on my newly built machine? Also, keep in mind, I used the machine for about two weeks without issue before connecting the graphics card last night.

I'm at work so I won't be able to try some solutions until I get home tonight, but my first question is simply: why would connecting a graphics card slow down the internet?

Also worth noting: when I started the computer two weeks ago I had an issue where my keyboard (eclipse litetouch) only worked in a single USB port. I solved this issue. When w... Read more

This morning my computer is suddenly not recognizing the ethernet port - getting "a network cable is unplugged" notification and it does not light up. I tried plugging the same patch cord into another tower and it lights up immediately and is recognized by that computer. Everything was fine when I left last night - not sure what happened to cause this.

In View Network Connections, I tried to disable and enable the LAN connection but it nothing happened.
IPCONFIG /ALL came up with this:

Host Name: office4-915a840
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection 2:
Media State: Media disconnected
Description: VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address: 00-19-DB-E7-AF-2D
Would really appreciate suggestions of how to remedy this.

We are running 2K Active Directory with internet connection thru ISA. Users must logon to the network, then if going to the internet they are prompted to logon again to ISA server. We have mandatory profiles that do not let them access options for internet explorer. We have discovered if a user logs onto the local machine and not the network, with the network cable still attached, they have straight access to the internet without logging thru ISA and therefore no record of their activity. Any suggestions where to start looking or known issues or have we simply missed something.

Okay, I finally got that *censored* Local Area Connection thing running, and my two PCs are connected. However, I'm using a VPN connection to access the internet. So, I set that the VPN connection is shared on the network (that is, with the other computer). The one I'm connecting through connects online, internet is working fine, but the other one has no response (FTP, pinging, file accessing is all working). Help?

Answer:Sharing a VPN connection

Since no one else has responded, I'll respond as best as I can.Why are you using a VPN to access the internet?  I've set up VPNs before to access secure networks, but not just to get internet access.  And the VPNs I set up were very specific, or limited to, one computer for security reasons.  I would imagine that multiple computers could be set up to use a single VPN, but each would need to be authorized.  What VPN software are you using? You don't mention a router.  Are you using one?

Question: Sharing Connection

Hello,
I'm having a problem of sharing cable connection with my sister. My sister is the one who is sharing the connection with me. We are sharing connection from house to house. I'm using Linksys Wireless USB Network adaptor (802.11b) and she is using LINKSYS WIRELESS-B BROADBAND ROUTER (802.11b). I bought them brand new. The cable company is Adelphia.
At first, the cable connection went great and fast. But after a few months. I'm have a problem with this wireless connection. My adapter is not receiving any connection at all. But the icon shows me that "Signal Strength: Excellent." I was like...what happened. So I have to go to my sister's house and ask for help. She restarted everything including the router. Then everything works good after that. But after a couple weeks, this kept on happening. My sister is so pissed off because I went to her house and asked her to restart the computer and router. I'm annoyed too...
So is there anyone who can please solve my problem??
I'm bowing down for help!!

Answer:Sharing Connection

Boy does this sound familiar. Just went thru the exact same thing. WirelessB Linksys router worked good for about 4 months, now loses the wireless connection but shows connected. Reboot router and it works for a couple of days then the same thing happens again. I was lucky thou, had a D-link DI614+ not being used and changed it out and now working fine again. Good Luck! Trashed the Linksys, because can't find the sales slip

Where should I begin?

Hi

My partner has an aol connection which is connected to her PC via USB. I have installed a second PC and networked it to hers via the ethernet port.

Now I want to share the aol connection with the second PC. I have set up internet connection sharing for what that was worth. It did not work and i cannot share the connection. To further compound the issue, when I closed aol and reopened it, it denied access until I disconnected the second PC from the ethernet port.

I have looked at the aol help page on this and it states I must get a router. I find this a bit hard to believe. Is there a document that tells you step-by-step how to achieve sharing of this connection? Is it possible? (in that, have you seen it accomplished)

Question: connection sharing

I posted elsewhere but later discovered a dedicated Networking section.
Can anyone point me to a tutorial specific to the following..

Laptop one running winXP home edit. Connecting to broadband via usb client
device.

Connecting via rj45 crossover cable to..

Laptop two running winME.

I got to the point where I could actually run the "set up a home or small office network"
on both computers, which enabled me to tenuously connect to the internet via the crossover
cable. However, immediately after running the "set up....." on the XP machine it disabled the driver GUI for the usb client card. I was still connected, but couldn't see what I was doing.

There are many tutorials available out there, but there are so many permutations of OSs, hubs, client devices, and routers, that it's hard to find something that makes sense for me.
I downloaded the "Microsoft Networking Guide" from msn and throughout it states in no uncertain terms that you must NOT use a crossover type cable. Yet in the help notes on the very same site there are plentiful hints on how to use a crossover cable. I'd like to use the crossover since it is "supposed" to be the simplest methond. But if I must go out and buy a hub device, I guess I must.

Thanks for any help.

I dont know much bout networking. I just moved into my girlfriends and she has a dsl connection using a gateway(i thought it was a router but on back it says gateway, anyway the brand is 2wire and i dont know the differnece between gateway and router) Anyway i have a desktop in other room and i plug a netgear wg111v2 usb into it and it usually picks up connections and i type in the wep passphrase and connect. but it aint pickin up her onnection. please help!!!

thanks.

Answer:Need help sharing connection!

There is no difference between the two in this case, the 2WIRE is a modem/router.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Question: Connection Sharing

I don't know all the behind the scenes stuff about enabling connection sharing. So bare with me.

What I've had to do so far is go to my adapters and enable connection sharing from the sharing tab, on my wireless.. I've got an ethernet cable running to my desktop on the floor. I need the connection to work primarily so I can share my laptop keyboard and cursor with the desktop. What I've been doing for the desktop is sufficing with an xbox controller and xpadder which allows me a cursor, doesn't solve the typing issue.

Anyways, on with it. I bring my laptop to and from campus and I plugin an ethernet while at the campus for access to blocked stuff. Ethernet in my classroom isn't hindered

So if you haven't already figured it.. this disallows me from leaving connection sharing on 24/7 this is an extra hassle having to navigate to and from that area. So obviously a shortcut of sorts is desired here.

This is what I've been trying to find info for so far. I've been searching for netsh commands to configure the wireless connection to share, I've been pulling up useless info. If I can get some sort of script that doesn't require 3rd party software to run, which can enable and disable that particular thing.. or even just reproduce all the necessary footwork for the share to work and reset it as the counter.

My original thinking was netsh would be able to for sure, so I could just make a simple batch file.

So, nobody has any knowledge of such a thing, and any google searches have obviously failed.

I have two computers. One using Windows 2000 with a DSL modem/connection. The other one (in a different room) with Windows 98 (no ethernet card). I would like to share my DSL connection to the other one outside. How is this possible?

Basically, it doesn't matter what kind of Ethernet card I buy for my other computer right? All I need is that and a wireless DSL router correct (does it has to be the same brand as the ethernet card)? Is the router suppose to be used on the one with my DSL modem or the other one?

Answer:Sharing DSL connection

The NIC, or Ethernet card, can be any brand if you use cables. It then should be a 10/100MB card.
If you go wireless, you will need a wireless NIC, preferably but not necessarily the same brand as the router. Your wireless router should have a switch built-in to connect up to 4 cabled PCs (for your W2K machine)
There are many threads in this forum explaining exactly what you need and how to do it. Search Forum is your best friend....

Well i have been reading about what and how to share my internet connection, so now i need the hardware.
I reckon ill go for a router as it allows duplex communications, so i can send recieve, download, or whatever all at the same time (i think).

So can anyone give me a link to a UK based shop where i can buy the hardware at a reasonable price. No offence to other sources, just want to avoid long delivery times thats all.

Then the config of the software, perhapse a another post

The pc's that i have to set up are windows xp operating systems
athlon 2000xp and 2100xp cpu's. similar ram ect.

We will be sharing a 1mb broadband connection and i want to maxamize speed so i will pay a little more for the relevant hardware if necessary.

Both pc's have a nic card installed, mine is a netgear that was installed when i had broadband installed 1/2 years ago, so i hope its not going to slow down my shared connection(will it?)

Question: connection sharing

i have a friend who's comp is having a zillion problems. i would like to format and install win2k advanced server from my box, onto hers, as a 'fresh install'. i was told this could be done if i set up 'remote connection sharing' and the cd itself says i can format other comps on my 'network'.

i'd like to know, firstly, is it possible to do as a 'fresh installation' on her comp (because i'm thinking once her drive is formatted, how is she going to stay connected to me?). and secondly, any links with information on how i would go about setting this up and doing it.

any help greatly appreciated, and thank you.

Answer:connection sharing

Why in the world would you install Advanced Server anyway? I'm going to guess that this friend is not running a large computer network, AS will be of no use to her I would imagine.

I don't know of a foolproof way to do a raw format/install on a remote machine, too many things can go wrong and leave you in a state of limbo.

Hi Guys,

I want to be able to share my 56k internet conection between 2 computers. 1 computer is a room that has it's own dedicated phone line for the internet. the other is in another room with no phone line. I'd like for the second computer to be able to share an internet connection with the first one (ideally without the first computer having to be turned on or online, though if this is not possible i'll take what i can get)

I know the simplest solution would be to run a phone line to other room but this is not an option (and also the computers couldn't share the connection) There are wireless routers out there for broadband connections, would this also work with a 56k? (i know i know, i'm very old tech

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Answer:Sharing a 56k connection, is it possible?

well firstly i would reccommend gettin either cable or adsl u will notice the difference straight away trust me. but i know these are available everywhere. The simplest way is to put a network card in either comp then run a crossover Network cable inbetween the two then it would work, simple. BUT for this the comp with the Modem will have to be on and connected for the other to work the only real way around this is a router as u sed. But again as u said u cant find any with a 56k modem in built, so the best way round this is to get a external modem with a ethernet output and connect it to a switch. ive never done this before but i know doing this kinda thing can cause alot of heartache but its upto u. hope this helps

The DSL modem came with its own software "Efficient Networks - EnterNet 300"

Because the connection is not set up through the windows IE, the windows Internet Connection Sharing feature does not work.

I need help sharing the connection hopefuly without adding more software as one of the computers on the network does not have the space.

Current network settings show:
tcp/ip
microsft client networking
file and print sharing

Answer:DSL - connection sharing.

If your ISP allows more then one IP address, you can use a hub, if they only allow one IP address per member, you can use a router.
A dsl router will setup using pppoe and it will get the IP address and allow all your computers to surf together.

I have an Actiontec GT701-WG DSL Modem with Wireless Gateway. I have it connected to my computer via USB. I want to be able to share my internet connection with a computer in a different room. So I guess I need to do this wirelessly. Here is my question, what hardware do I need to do this? My DSL modem has an antenna on it (says it's a wireless gateway) - does that mean I just need to plug a wireless PCI card in the other computer, configure the modem and it will work? Or do I need to have a router connected to my modem and then a wireless PCI card in the other computer? Or can I use a wireless USB adapter? I've searched all of Actiontec's site and can't find the information I need. Someone please help.

I'm thinking I'd rather go wired than wireless as the rooms the computers will be in are close to each other and I have easy access to wire under the house. Thanks in advance. J.

Both PCs have WinXP. I have also been able to network them both before, bypassing the adsl modem to play games with each other but i want to share the broadband connection ...

I have two desktop computers, one with win 7 and other Winxp. The internet comes thru ADSL modem, from it lan cable goes to a 8 port unmanaged switch, from it two wires comes out, one goes to each machine. Now in Win7 machine, I have a PPPoE dialer to connect to my ISP. I am successfully able to dial and get internet in Win7 machine. Now when I try internet in winxp machine, no internet so the question is any special settings required in winxp machine?

In Winxp machine I have not tried ICS & homegroup. I just tried to give DNS server as open or modem ip i.e. 192.168.1.1. I disabled all firewalls here, its able to ping the modem and win7 machine, open the modem page with no issues. So how to get internet here, plz guide.

Answer:Unable to get Internet Connection in Win XP machine thru switch

When I was using a Dial-Up Modem I did have to enable ICS so a second computer could get the Internet. But that's different from ADSL which uses the copper wires of the phone but not the Voice Carrier signal the Dial-Up Modem [and Fax machines] uses. I think ADSL would be more of an always-on thing, no dialing needed.

Hello, guys, i decided to use Hyper-V, because of its performance advantage over Virtualbox, but i have a problem with the Internet connection on the virtual machine. I get the Internet connection from my ISP through PPPOE connection and not just by placing
LAN cable in my network adapter. I saw tutorials on the Web, but they are all based on getting the Internet connection directly through LAN or Wi-Fi without PPPOE. Could you tell me the steps for setting up my Internet on the VM for my case or point me to
some tutorial or resource, etc.

Hi, I'm facing strange problem with Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro. I have tried to create new virtual machine and download TFS 2010 vhd, but the problem is equal. After starting virtual machine, Virtual Machine Connection screen is blank. Virtual machine state is Running and it's consuming CPU, but it cannot be used as screen is blank.

I have same problem with two separate PCs. The one I'm working on now has new i7 + 32GB + AMD Radeon HD 7900.

Any ideas how to proceed?

Regards, Sami

Answer:Blank screen on Virtual Machine Connection

Hi there,

You can try to restart, reset or shutdown from the controls,

after you connect.

If this doesn't work I think some settings need to be changed for that VM.
First turn it off and then change disk type, RAM, CPU display (if possible) one at the time.

If you get it working, installing the integration components is recommended to improve workflow on a resizable screen.

You will probably need a working VM (successfully connect and see something on screen) before you can install TFS.

I'm no expert but I hope you find something useful regarding the issue.

Hopachi

Even when i enable WLAN service on Windows 2008 R2, i don't see the wifi adapter in network settings. someone please help.
Thanks

Answer:Lost Wifi and LAN connection on Virtual Machine after 8.1

I had similar problems with 8.1 where the wifi adaptor would just disappear from Device Manager with no way to retrieve it.

The only thing that worked was performing system scans for missing system files and apparently there was some component store corruption as well. Typical for Windows 8 really.

Try running the scans outlined in the link below and let me know the results.

Hello,

I want to try Macrium Reflect to make backup images of my computers. However, I have one very important computer that I want to backup. This computer has no internet connection.
I have just downloaded Macrium on my laptop that I use for different testing. The download is about 45 MB. First thing was to create rescue CD/USB and during this process I had to allow Macrium to download additional components from the internet (25 MB something needed by PE).

My question is this:
What else I need to download besides Macrium Reflect Free in order to install it and use it offline on machine without internet connection?

On Machine on which I want to use it to make backup and rescue CD is WIndows 7 Pro 64 bit with SP1 installed.

Additional download during use of the Macrium application is out of question.

Thank you

Answer:Using Macrium software on machine without Internet connection

Since you created the rescue disc, that's all you need. On the "off line" machine, boot the rescue disc and you can then back up (make disc image) of the hard drive on that machine to whatever backup media (drive) you want to use. e.g. if its a USB connected drive, connect it before booting the rescue disc. I've done it this way many times with Macrium.

I was asked to look at a friend's daughter's computer. Symptoms included distortions in legit iTunes playing while online and browser lockup (independent of browser used) after a short while connected.Tried all the usual fixes, as per instructions in the pinned topics here: AdAware, Spybot, full AV scan, rootkit detection, etc in safe mode. Installed ZA firewall. Upon LAN connection, the connection's status window indicates machine begins indicating it is sending millions of packets. Engaging Internet lock on ZA has no effect. Only using 'Stop all Internet activity.' ends the attempted outrush of packets.Following the instructions on the "Windows Forensics: Have I been Hacked?" page on this site, I downloaded and used the Fport tool. It seems to show that there are processes that it cannot see using ports. I will include a copy of its output after the HijackThis log.Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Hi,

I have setup a Canon MP560 as a wifi printer and can connect without any problems with a Windows 7 machine.
I have a Win XP machine on the same network but cannot add it as a printer.
The software that comes on the Canon disk cannot find it, nor can I manually fin it.
I can however navigate to the printer using its IP address in my IE, yet cannot add it. I even tried adding it via a new TCP/IP port, still no luck.

Any ideas??

Adam

Answer:problem with MP560 WIFI connection to XP machine

I believe that you will need to find a Windows 7 compatible driver for that printer in order for the printer to work on the XP machine.

In Windows 7 do you have Network Discovery and File & Print Sharing enabled?

Have you turned off turned off any and all firewalls and tried connecting?

Can you connect to the internet with the XP machine?

I'm using LAN internet on my laptop and I want to share it to my phone or another laptop through WiFi. But I have some problems.
First of all (and probably the root of the problem) is that the Internet connection sharing service is not working properly. When I start it it shows me a box, saying "The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
All of the following services are set to auto-start, and are started: Application Layer Gateway Service, Network Connections, Network Location Awareness (NLA), Plug And Play, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Telephony.
Also when I go to my LAN card properties under the Sharing tab, I mark the two options there and whatever I chose for Home network connection I get the same error, saying "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. (null)"

The method I'm trying is making and ad hoc network. I'd be glad to get some help from you guys

PS: Also can you tell me why do I have two "Wireless Network Connection" under my Network Connections? The one is Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card, and the other is Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.

I have a friend who has had a Vsat installed, using a Skystar 360E Serial, this device is connected directly to a Network Card in the computer. There is another Network Card connecting this computer to the LAN. The operating system on this computer is Windows 2000 Professional. The Network adapter connecting to the Skystar has no TCP/IP addresses, (all the settings are set to Obtain an IP address automatically and the same for the DNS server. There is also no Gateway set up). The Network Card connecting to the LAN has a static IP address = 192.168.0.1 Subnet =255.255.255.0.

What the friend would like to do is to have the other 2 computers on the LAN to have Internet access through the computer that is directly connected to the Skystar device. Is there a way to this and if so can you tell me how?
By the way I have tried to share the connection but I don't seem to be setting it up correctly. Can someone assist?

I'm trying to connect my Xbox 360 to a VPN with internet sharing, but whenever I click "allow internet sharing" on the VPN I get errors like error 800 or error 714 that say things like "couldn't esablish vpn connection" or something like "security settings not compatible." I've also tried remaking the VPN and turning off the firewalls but nothing works. Could someone help me out? Also, I've heard that I can use a bridge connection instead, but don't I need a wireless connection for that? If so, how can I do this?

Not sure if I should post my specs or what info you'll need, but I'm using a PC with Windows XP and a DSL/Broadband wired connection for my PC and Xbox. My local area connection is: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. Also, please keep in mind that I'm a total non-expert when it comes to computers. I barely know what I'm doing, I just learned from tutorials.

Is there any way I can share a dial up connection between 2 PCs using a BT Voyager 200 router? My broadband's been changed to Sky and they haven't sent the new router yet so I use dial up for now, but I could do with it on both PCs as I threw out the dial up modem from 1 of them when I had broadband.

Answer:Sharing a dial up connection

BT Voyager 200 is a broadband router and therefore not suitable for a dial up method of connection. You mean to use a dial up modem which is available on one of the computers (You threw the external modem out for the other one) and the answer is No.As a short term alternative set up the same account on the working computer but set OE to "leave a copy on the server" for all messages. When you eventually get broadband those messages will be delivered to the other computer as well.

Hi All

My laptop is running Windows 7 Home premium and is connected to my wireless ADSL router with the ins built wireless card. Now I've shared this connection and the LAN network card has been assigned an IP address of 192.168.137.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 no other IP addresses have been set.

From what I understand I should be able to plug my other computer straight in to the windows 7 computer using a network cable and share the internet connection. But there is a problem with this. When I look in the "network and sharing center" on the windows 7 machine I can see the wireless connection has an internet connection but under the LAN connection it says "No internet connection" and when I do plug in the "client" it doesn?t get an IP assigned so obviously I can't browse the internet on it.

Any advice would be greatly received

Oh the other machin is an XP machine

Answer:internet connection Sharing

I take it that your Windows XP machine has no wireless card.

Make sure that your ICS is activated on your Windows 7 computer.

1. Activate the Windows 7 ICS
2. Check the LAN NIC TCP/IP settings
a: TCP/IP 4 has to have: IP: 192.168.0.1
b:Subnet and Gateway can be left blank.
3. Plug a cable from your Windows 7 NIC to your Windows XP NIC
4. Modify your TCP/IP settings on your XP machine to read:
a: TCP/IP 4: IP: 192.168.0.2
b: Subnet: 255.255.255.0
c: Gateway: 192.168.0.1
d: DNS: You need to get this from your Windows 7 computer.

To obtain the DNS:
Go to your Windows 7 computer
under the RUN command type "cmd"
type ipconfig /all , hit enter

under your wireless connection, the one that pulls the internet.. You should find DNS numbers.
those numbers should be exact of what you will put in the XP machine.

Once you are done with the numbers, hit okay, okay, apply, whatever to get you out of the network settings page to apply everything

Hi everyone..

I have one laptop connected to a wireless network, via a plugged in netgear WPN111 USB which is receiving a signal from a wirless router. I have another laptop in the room and i'm wondering how can i share this wireless connection with it. The connection is called UPC52459. How do i set up an ad hoc network which will let the other laptop share this connection? Please help!

Answer:sharing a wirless connection by ad hoc

Well, I'd install a wireless adapter in the second laptop, it's by far the best method. However, if you simply must do it with ICS, here's a tutorial. http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/index.asp

Hi,I've just set up a new Windows 2000 Server with Internet Connection Sharing. Everything has gone extremely smoothly, but the only problem I have is I can only access websites via their IP addresses on the client systems. I've configured DNS to the best of my knowledge, but I've probably done it wrong. It's either that or my firewall, although that is configured to specifically allow the server to use ICS.I really don't want to turn the firewall off, because I can guarantee getting a virus within a minute of doing so. I did try it briefly and it made no difference. Is there anything I can try?Gaz

Answer:Internet Connection Sharing and DNS

What DNS server addresses are you using? Normally, with Internet Connection Sharing, the "Host" computer's IP address (192.168.0.1) would be used as the Client's DNS server address, but try replacing that with fixed DNS addresses and use those of your ISP. (If you run IPCONFIG /ALL in the Host PC, you will see the DNS addresses allocated by the ISP).

I have a connection to an internet caffe, and i want to share that connection to a friend of mine via a second network card. The ip of the icaffe server is 192.168.0.1 and if i want to do an internet connection sharing with my friend...it automatically makes my ip 192.168.0.1 and so it enters in direct conflict with the icaffe server.
Is there any way to change the default ip address of internet connection sharing....or any way that i can make my friend's connection work?!!?

ppls help

Answer:Internet Connection Sharing

ICS is a Workgroup windows sharing program. It is designed to be used with 10 or less Computers.Your Internet cafe is most likely a Domain .Therefore you would need to have your friend join the Domain. If you can get the IP manager to give you the correct specific user info, and your friend is running the correct version of windows he will be able to connect.
