Open DNS in router

Question: Open DNS in router

I am trying to use open dns. OpenDNS | Internet Navigation And Security

I decided to put the open dns ip's in my router so that when anyone uses my network they will get the open dns ip's instead of my isp dns derver ip's.

All of my pc's (2 xp home, 1 win 7 homeprem) are set up as dhcp clients.

My problem is that the win 7 box is still getting the isp dns ip's. The 2 xp's are getting the new opendns ip's.

Win 7, I have rebooted, disabled adapter/reenabled adapter, disabled ipv6....

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Open DNS in router

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I need to change some settings on my router (the nat to open) how do I go about doing this? Very simple steps work the best with me lol!(how do i even get to the page to change router settings?!)

Answer:Setting NAT on router to open? help

You should start by reading your router manual. After that, try to figure out what you want to achieve and tell us too

"nat to open" does not make sense. Do you want to play some game with someone over the internet? What game is it? What kind of a router do you have?

So, i've been hosting games for a while but i don't know what happened, after i try to port forward router ports they just won't open :O. Yeh, as i go to
Open Port Check Tool it says ''Error: I could not see your service on 62.**.***.*** on port (*****)
Reason: Connection timed out''

So.... How can i open my ports?? Do i have to call my router provider or something??

Answer:Router ports won't open

It really depends on your specific router model to setup port forwarding, it's hard to tell really. But a few things you could do in advance are checking that your computer as a fixed LAN IP address, and forward the port to that IP and make sure a program is actually listening to that port when you run the check online.
Another way to check it would be to connect two computers to the router, one to a LAN port and another to the WAN port, and check whether or not they can see each other.

Hi can someone please help clear up my concerns because I accidentally interned the wrong DNS address on my new router.
After entering this typo I almost immediately that my connection was unstable especially on Linux and yesterday evening when I logged back into my router the DNS settings were set to there defaults. But I was able to surf the web kinda in Windows though it timed out often and certain webpages wouldn't even open, and now when ever I enter the correct DNS settings it disconnects from the internet.
Here's what I entered

I'm really feeling uneasy and stressed about this, any advice?
Why does stuff like this happen whenever your in poor health or any other of life's trials and complications?

Answer:Open DNS typo on router

Two things you might check:
1. In Windows, do your Network Properties have a DNS Server entry(s) that point(s) to your router (probably or close) or do they point to the published OpenDNS IP addresses? Easy check: From an Elevated Command Prompt: ipconfig /all
2. After you corrected the DNS router entries, did you have the router do a cold reboot?
I believe you shouldn't overly stress yourself over this if you didn't make any financial transactions. But new passwords could be needed.

Platform: Westell UltraLine Series3
Model Number: A90-9100EM15-10

I know how to forward ports on this router, but ever since I had to restore my windows to a fresh copy, my router doesn't work right.

Also, I restored my router to default settings after I couldn't get it to forward any ports.

This is pretty much my problem, whenever I forward my port I want open, i check it and get the message "Error: I could not see your service on on port (55655)
Reason: Connection refused"

It's driving me insane. I've forwarded ports before on this router, but it's not working this time.

Answer:My router will not let me open ports.

Make sure you set a static IP on the computer you want
to forward to and use that port for forwarding.
The IP in that error looks like it may be your modem IP.

You mean you want to map some ports in your router to specific machines on your LAN. This should be possible through the router's web-based administration interface.Do you not have docs for the router? Or can you not download them from the manufacturer's website if you don't?

Opening a port is a goofy term - - let's start with just using a port.
For a port to exist, some program creates a socket and then uses it to LISTEN for connections. You can see this with (command prompt tool) netstat -oan
Programs which are awaiting connections show up like

the nnn are the 'port numbers' created by the program.

Q? Which ports are open? A: only those that exist, eg: port 135 is open, and port 136 is closed (ie doesn't exist).
Regardless of your other setups for the router and firewall, the port is not open unless a program is LIST... Read more

Ok, I don't even know if it's possible, I have just started playing a game (Crysis 2) and when I'm in the game it says I'm under a strict NAT type. I have looked around a lot to try and find a way to change my settings to open, but alas NO LUCK. Only links I find are ones that tell you how to do it if you're connection has a router. I'm not on a router, I'm using a Virgin Mobile Broadband card and the only firewall I'm behind is a windows firewall.

Now, you'd think I could just turn off the firewall and solve the problem.. but no. If I do that, it won't even let me log into the game. Terrible connection issues with this game. Soo.. yeah. I've come here because last time I came here people were real friendly and helpful.

So if there is a way to open NAT on windows 7, while having no router. Can someone please tell me? Thank you.

I've got a Linksys router and I'm trying to SSH into my home machine (, however in the UPnP Forwarding page of the router setup neither SSH nor SFTP are in the Preset Applications list. Whenever I try to add it to the customized applications list, if I use internal port 22 (external port shouldn't matter, right? though I've tried it both ways) via TCP it gives me the error "Failure: No space to add Virtual Server or have a duplication port:ssh." I get the same error if I try to use port 22 in Port Range Forwarding.

Not only that, but if I set the Preset Application for FTP to internal port 22 it makes the changes successfully, but doesn't work. So the question is, what else in the router is set to port 22 (I've looked and couldn't find anything that had a 22 in it) that might conflict with the UPnP forwarding? Also how would I fix it?

Edit: I should also mention that if I keep Preset FTP at internal port 21 as is default it works completely, likewise if I SSH from a machine on the LAN via IP address (thus bypassing the router) on port 22 it also works fine.

Edit again: Forgive me for being retarded, I assumed it was a linksys because that's what I usually buy, upon further inspection of the upper left corner of the screen it turns out that it's a Network Everyhwere nr041... so if you can solve my first two questions here's the extra credit: how did I get this router (I didn't buy it)?

Answer:Can't open 22 on Linksys router??

I don't think you are on the right page to do the thing you want. You shouldn't be on the UPnP page to setup your port forwarding. There should be another page in the router labled port forwarding where you can specify the range of ports (22 to 22) and the address you want the port forwarded to (the machine you want to SSH into).

Nothing to worry about; Port80 is an alternative for http and ICMP Pings are simply the means of checking if a user is still on the site.If you have a good Antivirus program and windows firewall activated and combine these with common sense you will be ok.

Hello folks... I am sick and tired of constantly fiddling with my static IP address on consoles and with my router in order to try and get Open NAT, or trying to choose which ONE of my many consoles get to be in the DMZ, only to have something reset my settings behind my back. Really sick of it.

So, I want a router than designates one of its physical Ethernet ports as OPEN NAT or DMZ, and anything connected to that port, all switches and devices that may be attached, are automatically OPEN NAT or DMZ. This would be phenomenal for me as I already have all my consoles and other entertainment devices already hooked to a series of switches going back to one port on my router, all hard wired.

Where can I buy such a router, and if it doesn't exist, why the hell not?

EDIT: Just found one that might work from T-P Link on Amazon... it seems to have a dedicated DMZ port, but then I realized that I am forced to use a specific router with MoCA by my ISP (I have FiOS). So can I then buy a second router, give it a static IP, set that static IP as DMZ in the first router, and hook all my devices that I want to be Open NAT/DMZ to the second router by turning off NAT completely on the second router? Will that even work?

Answer:Looking for router with an Open NAT/DMZ port! Does it exist?

just get a static ip for every console you have... plus one for your router to connect your household's other devices, pcs/tablets/phones

set them up all on a switch that connects directly to your isp, none of your consoles will need NAT or DMZ...

but tbh, most consoles are pretty NAT friendly, maybe your problems aren't with that...

After SP2 installed ran shields up on which showed Port 80 open.I don't know situation prior to SP2 install (mate knows very little about PC's and has never checked firewall)but wonder if this is connected in some way to router. i.e. does port 80 have to stay open to communicate with router and will all be closed on internet side of router. Any info would be of great value including how to close said port 80 if needed. Thanks.

on routers port 80 is open by default because its for basic internet connectivity with out it you wouldnt be able to onto the internet. This is open by deafult.

I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to help with a problem. I am connected to my internet network on my PC through an Ethernet cable, but cannot access the internet through a browser or anything else. This is the second time this week this has happened. I had a separate PC issue early this week which caused me to reinstall windows. I have had the issue with connecting to the internet occur twice now since reinstalling windows, both times after installing windows updates. I resolved the first occur acne by having my ISP come out. I do not know what they did to fix the problem, only that the router was not the source, and he changed something while logged into the modem settings. Any help would be appreciated.

hi, I know this is more of a windows forum, but when I was searching this is the place most of my searches lead me too. Right now I'm in Russia using a Zyxel Keenetic router, which works fine without using OpenDns. There doesn't seem to be a model number either, just Keenetic. There's no way that I've found to change to point to the Open DNS servers on the router, only on the individual computers, maybe there's a conflict. The 4g company I'm going through is Yota. When I try to use OpenDNS the internet might work for a site or two but then stops. When I use the standard windows troubleshooting, it says the problem is the DNS server isn't responding. Also it doesn't work on those other guys' computers either. I'm using windows 7 Ultimate. Thanks for your time,

So recently my brother has blocked some ports on our home router because he thinks i play too much video games. ( i actually

I know a bit about networking and the like so i had a little head start but this has really stumped me. I've tried UPnP enabling and setting the Xbox's IP address with DMZ but nothing, ive tried manually entering the ports for forwarding and disbaling UPnP but nothing......

Ive tried disabling the firewall but still nothing. No matter what i try i cannot get the NAT setting to 'open' it is always on 'strict'

Ive phoned my ISP and tried different DNS server addresses but still it says NAT STRICT.

Can any please help, this is driving me mad!!!

Try this to have your NAT as open is to make sure DHCP is enabled in the router and make sure the 360 does NOT have a static IP. I cleared all the LIVE ports i was told to forward and don't have the 360 IP in the DMZ (the 360's IP is now set as dynamic and not static). Finally make sure UPnP is enabled and reboot the router. my new room mate helped me with a router set up before and at some point I changed the ISP and reset everything with a new password. My room mate asked for the new password, so I logged into my router and from there he took over, copied the password and also opened up a port range to go to some IP address which I don't know whose it is. The next day my laptop wouldn't start and ran some Repair application. Eventually it started back up and I ran a virus and spam check but found nothing. My question is: why would my roomate open up a range of ports? And what risk does this pose for me? I actually just disabled the open ports but I don't want to overreact either. Thanks!

Answer:risk of open application port on router

Ports are how your computer (or router) communicates with the outside world. Your roommate may need to open some ports for programs that demand specific ports to function optimally. He may have a game system that requires port activation. Not as scary as it sounds. I would ask your roommate just to make sure he knows what hes doing.

Hi Everybody
I want to make a normal minecraft server for my friends.. But I can't forward ports because my internet connection has 2 router and i don't have access for the second router (the reason of that is my internet provider).
I thought the second router has opened port (eg.: 80) and I should use that, but i don't know... Isn't worked.
Can I open port in this case?
Thanks for any help, and sorry if made same language-mistake the English isn't my mother tongue and i just learn it.

Answer:Open port on 2 router system, without access

You cannot have two routers connected so I suspect you have a BT Openreach Modem connected to a Router, this is the usual set up for a Fibre connection unless you replace both with a VDSL Router.
You need only access the Router and Open ports on that but many routers supplied by service providers are quite basic and cannot be changed from a standard setup.

If you rely on BT for high-speed internet or VoIP, there's a good chance a pair of UK-based researchers know how to enable a backdoor in your router that leaves you wide open to eavesdropping, caller spoofing and other nasty attacks.
The vulnerability resides in the BT Home Hub, one of the UK's most popular home routers, according to Adrian Pastor and Petko D. Petkov. A constellation of bugs in the router, which is made by Thomson/Alcatel, make it possible to bypass the device's password authentication system and gain complete administrative control.

All an attacker needs to do to exploit the weaknesses is lure the victim to a maliciously crafted website, according to this post on the GNUCitizen blog. The exploit doesn't require knowledge of the administrator password.
"The BT Home Hub is vulnerable to an authentication bypass that allows us to make any administrative requests to the router from a malicious website WITHOUT needing username and password," Pastor wrote in an email to The Reg. He and Petkov have confirmed the vulnerability in the BT Home Hub running the most recent firmware. They believe the exploit will work on all Thomson/Alcatel Speedtouch 7G routers.
US-based BT representatives didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
The scope of the vulnerability and the ease in carrying it out means that a remote attacker can quietly gain full administrator control over a device simply by social engineering a user into visiting a website. The exploi... Read more

I'm brand new to this site. Just read about your site in my AARP newspaper, so that should tell you I'm 60+.
My son, a high school teacher, has set up all the desktops I've ever had and the current laptop, as well as the Belkin router. My desktop is Dell dimension E521, purchased May, 2007. The operating system is Windows Vista home premium. My laptop, which is what I'm using to send this message, is a Dell, purchased in 2013, with Windows 8.1 operating system. Up until about 3 weeks ago, I was able to access my email and surf the web from the desktop. The router is Belkin, purchased right after I got the laptop, and has worked fine until 3 weeks ago. I can access everything with no problem from the laptop, but the desktop and the router now fight each other. Just tried to get on so that I could tell you what happens. I click my browser icon, Mozilla Firefox, and the home screen comes up fine. I then click to sign in to email and the router light goes from blue to orange and after about a minute, I get a message "server not found". I close that window and the router light returns to blue. My granddaughters are not happy either because I let them use the desktop to play their games and access sites such as funbrain. Frustration level now runs deep as I'm seriously considering getting another router. My house is a 1-story ranch. ISP is AT&T, DSL with a Westell 2100 wired modem. I was hosting a server fine off my computer until one day a virus took my computer for a spin to hell. After removing it my ports all seem to be closed. I used a port scanner and it keeps saying 25565 is closed, as well as other ports, but I need 25565 the most right now.

Things my tech did:
Tested if it was my IP by using a router and forwarding the ports on it. - Failed
Changed profiles on computer and hosted - Failed
Uninstalled and shut down all firewalls - Failed
Uninstalled all hamachi and tunngle services - Failed
Disabled any known ideas that he knew that would close the ports - Failed

However we ran the server with the same connection on a laptop and it worked just fine. So it is something to do with my system. This laptop ran the same anti-virus software as well when hosted.

I've ran MS Essentials, Avast, Kerpenski or w/e it's called, Combofix, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and some other things that my brother ran but he uninstalled them later.

Completely stumped on this one.

I've been using ClarkConnect for over 2 years now and have been trying out a few other gateway/router/firewall distros lately so I thought I'd post info on them.

Here is what I have come across so far (not in any particular order).

Router Projects:

LEAF: "A secure, feature-rich, customizable embedded Linux network appliance for use in a variety of network topologies. Although it can be used in other ways; it's primarily used as a Internet gateway, router, firewall, and wireless access point."

SmoothWall: "SmoothWall Express is an open source firewall distribution based on the GNU/Linux operating system. Linux is the ideal choice for security systems; it is well proven, secure, highly configurable and freely available as open source code. SmoothWall includes a hardened subset of the GNU/Linux operating system, so there is no separate OS to install. Designed for ease of use, SmoothWall is configured via a web-based GUI, and requires absolutely no knowledge of Linux to install or use."

Freesco:"FREESCO (stands for FREE ciSCO) is a free replacement for commercial routers supporting up to 10 ethernet/arcnet/token_ring/arlan network cards and up to 10 modems.
Like most players in this field, it runs off one floppy
FREESCO runs in as little as 8 Mb RAM."

I typically open a single port for torrents, and leave it alone. Upon coming back home from college however, I noticed that my family's network for opening ports is filled with randomly opened ports for ips in the network. I've closed the ports and opened ports for myself, but that is undone after some degree of time with a new set of opened ports. No one else in the family is doing it, and I've since taken security precautions. Previously, the network had no password, but I now changed the router password from default and I've added WPA-2 Personal password. However, the ports keep on opening (and overriding mine). I've asked the people in my family to run virus checks, although I'm not sure all of them have. So, back to the question:Could this be a virus or spyware? I also found this term on wikipedia: that be related to my plight?

Hi I've been having this problem for quite a long time and I've done everything under the sun that I can think of. Right so here's the situation.
For over a year now I've been trying to open ports on my Linksys WRT54GS and it just won't have it. I have a Static Ip, and when I remove the router from the equation I can get access through the port so I know its not my ISP blocking the ports.

I've set up port forwarding on a different router and its worked fine so that pretty much eliminates the possibility that I'm doing something wrong. The only thing I can think of is I have a faulty router, I hope its not the case but I'm at the end of my rope and I want to get this fixed.

i have a blitzz 4 port router, and i cant do file transfers on AIM and stuff like that, and i cant figure out how to manually open the ports necessary to send and get files

Answer:i need to figure out how to manually open ports with my router

Don't know which Blitzz router your using but taking the user manual "MU_BRT200_01.pdf" as a guide, opening the ports is described in the section "Virtual Server" (page 17 onwards).

There is a "Virtual Server" Menu page into which the the configuration details have to be entered.
The Application Port drop-down list on the "Virtual Server " menu may offer up AIM (in the same way as it offers FTP, telnet, etc). If not, then you should be able to add it.
The port type is, I expect, TCP for AIM (but I could be corrected on that as I am not a regular user of AIM).
You need to know the ports AIM uses. Judging by the list on AIM requires port 5190.
So you'd select "Single". But it you need a range then select "Range" (again that is AIM-specific info someone else may be able to provide if you don't already know it).
Then enter the port number. Thus "5190 to 5190" in the provided fields if a single port or the range if that is what AIM requires.
Pick the LAN IP address of the PC you want to run AIM on and enter that in "Local Server IP address". So that would be or something of that ilk depending on your LAN set-up.
If all your details are correct press ADD.
That should be it as far as I can see.

I don't know with the Blitzz routers, but with some (many?) SOHO router models it is only possible to port-forward a particul... Read more

netbook shows connection but will not open any sites

Answer:my netbook shows it is connected to the router won't open

The netbook is connected to the router okay, but that doesn't necessarily mean the router is connected to the internet. You need to check that the router is actually connected to the internet. It may need restarting to re-establish a connection, or your ISP may be having technical problems at their end.

I recently purchased a new laptop that came with Windows 8. Now, I'm not at all certain the issue is windows 8 related.

So I've been trying to host games with friends in multi-player (minecraft, terraria, risk of rain, borderlands, etc) but they never can seem to join my game. I've tried turning off my firewall and my antivirus. (I wasn't even on the internet, so it wasn't a big risk) We're connecting by ethernet, PC to PC, and I've ensured our IP addresses are in the same subnet.

So here's the kicker: I can join any game, so long as they host it, not me. And i can ping their PCs just fine, but if they try to ping my machine they get a "Destination Host Unreachable".

Anyone have any clue as to what could be blocking my ports from opening?

PS: don't worry about burying me with jargon, I'm a network administrator in training.

Answer:PC Ports wont open to host a game (NO ROUTER) PC to PC LAN ONLY

I assume you are using a Crossover cable and not a standard Ethernet Cable?
Have you assigned a Static IP address for all the computers playing the game? and is it in the same scope as the other computers? (eg) 192.168.2.x ?
Go to each computer and go to Search and type CMD Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type
ipconfig /all and press enter. Copy the text and paste it into your next post.

Hello all,

I am planning to buy a router that will go in my structured media panel. It is a Leviton brand one. I put a piece of plywood behind the panel so it doesn't matter if the router mount holes match with the panel. I can drill through the panel and mount the device to the plywood. I am thinking to just get a couple of wireless access points to place around the house and a wired router that goes in the panel. I would like to get it without the wireless (don't want antennas wasting any space in the panel). I also want to find one that can handle open firmwares. Can anyone recommend a good router for this situation? Thanks.

Answer:Need open firmware router that will fit in structured media panel

Mikrotik Routerboard 750GL. A little larger than the size of a patch of cards. 5 ports ethernet, no wifi (optional I think).

edit: Here's a 10 port model, 5 GigE and 5 FaE.

I have been looking for a new router as my current one has packed in. I am mostly interested in a router with a fast and stable wifi and high throughput which can manage a high amount of maximum simultaneous connections. The linksys e4200 seems perfect and very well reviewed.
I am currently on adsl, no cable in area, so i would need one to have an adsl modem. Is there a version with a modem? Or will i need to look around for another?
I am mainly interested in throuput and the reviews and comparison sites sugest that linksys seems perfect midway between max simultaneous connections and price
Does anyone know of a comparison website that has adsl routers. The information am looking for on that's between 60 and 160 with high amount of ram, high throuput for Maximum Simultaneous Connections, similar to link text

Answer:recommend router high open connections without freezing

Linksys E4200 wireless router could be used to connect to ADSL modem, so no problem if you want to use it. In addition, you could also have a look on other wireless routers here.
Hope this helps.

First, FTP is much more complicated than just forwarding port 21. You might want to read up on FTP and firewalls

Hi all,

So I have had a moderate NAT while gaming on Xbox Live. From what I understand, opening the ports on my router will better enable my network hardware to communicate with Xbox live servers, changing my NAT to open, and thus allowing me to connect to my best friends party so we can play team doubles on Halo 4!

Anyway... I have tried opening the ports by accessing my router by typing its IP address into the URL. When I do this however, I receive an error message saying "this webpage is unavailable." I have tried this with both the Default Gateway and the IPv4 Address to no avail.

I have a Sagemcom FAST3686 router. I use it for my PC with cable and wireless for PS4, Xbox1 MacBook Pro, IMac, Sonos, and a lot of other stuff.

For a long time, I have had problems with a NAT3 and strict NAT in games. Both on the PC and on the consoles. Nothing have worked, port forwarding, MTZ or anything.

Then today I put my Apple Airport Express on the network. I put cable from router to the Airport and I still have the cable from the Sagemcom to my PC.

I have put the Sagemcom in bridge mode and disabled the wireless network in it. I have then set the Airport to DHCP and NAT.

Now I have open NAT on the PC and the consoles 😊

But is this a correct setup? What about security?

I simply don?t understand why PC now have an open NAT, when it?s still cabled from the Sagemcom, that is in bridge mode now?

I currently added a steam link to my network. I ran a 25ft cat6 cable through my basement into my living room to give it a wired connection(wireless wasn't cutting it). I'm currently using a Netgear R6300v1 router. Well i had an old 10/100 router(Netgear wnr2000v2) lying around and wanted to also add wired connectivity to my xbox one for streaming to Win10 devices.(same room as steam link)
I plugged the long cable from router 1 into port 1 on router 2. Disabled DHCP and set a static IP address. But i noticed a slight latency when streaming games. Nothing extreme, but more latency on top of the normal latency wasn't desired.

To the question!
I would prefer to not have to buy another networking device, so would setting up QOS on the routers maybe alleviate some latency?
Someone I work with suggested i get another router, but for the price of gigabit routers, i opted to look into switches. I was able to find gigabit switches under $20. Would a switch be better than daisy chaining routers?

Hi everybody

I picked up some nasty malware. AVG was updating and suddenly everything just fell apart.

I can't run any installation programs regardless of the extension or name. I've tried to install Rkill and MalwareBytes with absolutely no luck. It defaults to needing to be unblocked in the properties and no matter what compatibility mode I use it will not run. I get a 1084 error when I try to open the security center. In the taskbar I have an Action Center alert that says 1 Important Message and 3 Total Messages. The Action Center will not open at all. I do not have access to a USB key as I am not home, but I will be Tuesday evening. Any help would be infinitely appreciated.

Other notes I forgot: I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I am constantly getting errors that Windows can't load and needs to be repaired. It runs and restarts, sometimes being repaired and other times not.

Thanks a lot

Answer:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps

I now have an ethernet network using the Linksys router that I received when I signed up for Vonage (which I recommend and like very much). I would like to make my network wireless, but I would rather not have to spend the big bucks for the Vonage wireless telephone router, since they give no rebate to existing customers--bummer! So, my question is: Linksys' website doesn't recommend using a router to a router, and they do recommend an access point. How does that work? I don't know what an access point is and I would like advice on the best and most economical way to maintain my Vonage service and start a wireless network.

Answer:Access point to router OR router to router?

You can use a wireless router as an access point. You just don't use the Wan port of the Wireless router. You connect it to one of the lan switch ports.

Just got my Siemens SE567 ADSL Modem/Wireless Router. It is a real pain to hook it up, obviously with a built-in antenna the signal strength is horrible on the wireless and I already have a full home network setup with a wireless router and several wired desktops. All I want to do is use the SE567 to replace my old 3COM ADSL modem as strictly a modem and disable all wireless and non-wireless router functions. I know how to disable the wireless functions and have already done so, but I'm still getting no connection through my proprietary wireless router (hardwired or wireless).

So this is where I'm at and I'm stuck, I know it's a problem with the SE567 because I plug in my old 3COM modem and the internet works fine through the proprietary router (hardwired and wireless). Any ideas?

Answer:Siemens SE567 ADSL Modem - Disabling router functions and use a proprietary router?

You need to look for an option or something similar sounding to "Bridge Mode"

Most likely it's either setup for PPPoE or DHCP with the modem itself taking your public IP. There should be some sort of bridge mode that passes that public IP on to your router.

If you are using PPPoE you will need the user/pass to set your router up to handle the authentication with the modem in bridge.

Short story even shorter, there was a semi-power outage this morning (lights were very dim but power wasn't totally off), and when the power came back on my router stopped working. Here's what I know:

-The WLAN LED is no longer lit so there's no wireless. That orange CiscoSystems button is no longer glowing orange either if that means much.

-For some odd reason a wired connection through any of the ethernet ports on the router no longer works either, though the LED's still light up when connected, along with the internet LED.

-The modem works fine, I'm connected to the internet directly from the modem right now.

-I've tried to reset the router, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

-I've tried to access the router config settings, and the page doesn't load.

-I've tried to look up the routers ip address through the command prompt but when I enter the command "ipconfig" when I'm wired through the router I always get the response something along the lines of "media disconnected". When I try the command when connected directly to the modem the default gateway ip address comes up as ''. This doesn't work either.

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

I have been trying to find a way to connect, forward the signal, recieve the signal from my Verizon Fios wireless router up to my WGT624 V3 Netgear router.

Is there a way that I can modify my wirless port on my Netgear to recieve a signal wirelessly from my Verizon Wireless router?

My Neighbor did it once with another wireless router, but he can not remember how he did it. I am thinking it had something to do with the Firmware.

If anyone can help me with this that would be great.

I'm basically trying to push the wireless signal from my Verizon router in my basement, up to my wireless Netgear router which is recieving the signal on the main level so that I can plug my wired (non wireless) laptop into the ethernet port which is receiving wireless signal from the Verizon router in the basement in order to gain access to the internet.

Can this be done with the equipment listed above and or some additional firmware and configuration?

Thank you for all your assistance on this in advance.

Really need some help here, going crazy . We have a Sagemcom FAST 1704 modem/router from windstream, our ISP, and have been trying to get servers going for Minecraft game with no luck. So we thought that we could attach our Belkin router to the modem since we were having port forwarding problems. I have tried numerous times to set up the router with this modem and have even tried the bridge mode, but then I don't get internet access through the Belkin router....have no idea what I am doing wrong . I am running Windows XP....and my brother, who I want on the same network, is running Windows Vista...which I really hate. I had my XP connected, but could not get the Vista connected....then I completely messed it up and just am at my wits end....can someone please walk me through this? Let me know any info you need and how to send it to you .
Thanks a lot,

I have an 8 port "wired" router from Linksys that I have been using in conjunction to a wireless access point which had been plugged into one of the open ports on the wired router. Lately I have been having connection issues with the WAP so I decided it may be time to upgrade. Not thinking about it, I picked up a new Linksys E1000 wiress router (as opposed to a WAP) and, after a lengthy support call with Linksys, got that up and running.

So I have operability for both wired and wireless devices, however I have noticed a substantial slow down on my wired devices. I also just upped the plan with my ISP to increase my bandwidth which I see on the wired PCs but not on the wireless which seem less. Would a WAP be faster than a wireless router by nature?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Answer:Slow wireless after connecting Linkys wirless router to Linksys wired router

Have you made sure you have the latest firmware for the wireless router? If you updated the firmware be sure to reset it to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

What speeds do you get with a test such as with a connection to the wired router? With an ethernet connection to the wireless router? With a wireless connection?

So here is my case:

Verizon's Westell 6100:
Modem/Router, provides 1 incoming address (provided by VZ) and provides 1 internal address (

Netgear Wireless Router WGT624 v4:
Wireless Router, accepts and provides 10.0.0.X wired and wirelessly.

Although Verizon's Router indicates that it is on Bridge mode, the damn thing isnt. I thought the main concept of bridging was to become practically invisible and automatically reroute all traffic to the next device, which is what I want.
I want to ultimately use the Netgear device to set all my rules and settings, instead, I have to do it on both.
For instance, Xbox Live is not working 100% properly. I can only play video games without being able to join specific games, or perform any in-game video/voice chat.

I have tried NATing the device. No luck.
I have also tried setting the Netgear device as a Wireless Base Station. Either way, I just would like to have my network ignore 1 device, and have the second one invisibly reroute all the access.

Is that possible? Could you please help?

Thanks to all!

Answer:Netgear Wireless Router and Westell Modem + Router = Routed Bridge failure

Well, since the "modem" is supplying a private IP address, it's obvious that it's not in bridge mode, that can only happen with a NAT layer, aka a router.

Try this solution to configure it for bridge mode, direct from Verizon:

Hope this isn't confusing but, my internet provider (my cable company) came in to set up a wireless modem/router when we upped our internet speed today. We have three desktop computers which are hard wired to our existing Linksys router which we have been using previously. Would it be in our best interest to turn off the wireless function of that router (it's hooked up to the new modem/wireless router so the hardwired computers can function since the new unit has no ports to plug in the desktop computers into). Our wireless devices are all 'connected' to the new modem/router (using its passphrase and SSID). Can the wireless capabilities of each interfere with each other? They are sitting right next to each other.

Answer:Solved: Internet provider wireless modem/router and my hard wired router

It's confusing to me, but can make two comments ...

a. If you are not using the wireless network of a router it's best to disable or turn off the wireless--saves electricity and should extend the life of the router.

b. Two wireless networks whose channel numbers are less than five from each other can interfere. In North America if possible use channels 1, 6 and 11 to guarantee non interference.

Hi everyone !

Last night I set up a home network for a friends house using a NETGEAR DG834G wireless router. The desktop is connected to the net through the ethernet cable no probs, and my laptop connects to the router wirelesly no problem in every room in the house.

Problem is my friends laptop which is a Compaq Presario (I forget model) cannot find the router. Instead it finds all the neighbour's routers ?!?!? even with the laptop sitting next to the router there is no detection. It is about one year old and running XP. On the Windows network setup it says the wireless chip on the Compaq is a Broadcom 802.116/g

I use Intel PROSet/Wireless to connect to it using my laptop, but my friends laptop has something called HP Wireless Assistant, which has basically no options other than telling you that the wireless technology is turned on.

I have turned off firewalls etc but it will not find the NETGEAR router ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Whenever my print/file server is connnected to my vonage linksys router I am unable to print or see shared files. It connects to my linksys router and works fine except for the file sharing. I didnt see any obvious settings that would solve the problems in the software, so I have to disconnect the connection from my main router to the vonage linksys router and connect it directly to the pc for the print and file sharing to work. Anyone have a fix?

use standard router as main router and uplink the vonage router (turn off all routing functions).

Hi Folks.

Very new to ADSL and networking in general. Therefore, I'd appreciate it if your answers were as much as possible in laymen's terms.

Here's my problem:
I bought a D-Link DGL-4300 gaming router and attempted to couple it with a Prolink Hurricane 9000C ADSL Modem/Router. Essentially, the Prolink is a modem with a single port router combined. Thus, it has a Ethernet output.

Now, when I connect the Prolink alone to my PC, everything works just fine. However, when I connect the Prolink to my D-Link router's WAN port (according to D-Link instructions) and then connect one of the D-Link LAN ports to my PC, the Prolink and D-Link does not communicate with each other.

In other words, I cannot get Internet access with the D-Link connected. But, all the LEDs light up properly. The D-Link WAN, Prolink LAN, D-Link port 1 (PC), Prolink LINK (synchronized with ISP), etc.

When I first setup the Prolink, I inserted the CD and provided Username and Password as requested and all was fine. When I connected the D-Link also I went to its homepage and entered the Username/PW combination. But it never accesses the Internet via the Prolink. The PC communicates fine with the D-Link, but D-Link doesn't do so with the Prolink.

What could I be doing wrong? Could it have something to do with the fact that I'm connecting two Routers together as opposed to a pure modem - router combination?

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be... Read more

Answer:How to couple D-Link Gaming Router with Prolink ADSL Single port Router?

you probly have both units configured to do dhcp and routing. They will conflict. Two routers=bad. I would turn off the nat and dhcp on the Pro link and let the dlink do the heavy work.

I have a surface RT. I have been logging into my online banking without a problem, suddenly now the address is not being recognised and I cannot access. I have tried rebooting, resetting, and recovery. If I log in when I am using my works intranet I can then log into the account I can also access using my phone. so I know there is nothing wrong with the address. I have contacted Microsoft who don't seem to be able to help.

alright, hopefully you will understand this is less of a typical thread than you would expect, with that title. this is a bunch of answers, and a few questions.
i've listed what i've done. they've all given me great results.

here's the deal. we all know incorrect settings pretty much anywhere will lead to all traffic slowing or stopping, and the router disconnecting (usually for a reboot)

well, i've done pretty much everything i can to ensure maximum speeds. this can also server as a rough guide.

1. properly adjusted my torrent program settings. this means under 250max global connections, 100 per torrent. based on my bandwidth speed test, i can go much higher. (they say 420 global, 125 per torrent) download is uncapped, no difference either way... upload is capped at 55.
2. i've raised my max tcp connections within windows. using lvllord's patch. (more or less) my max connections are set to 500.
3. my router is a wrt54g v6. this means i have 8mb flash, and i am using dd-wrt MICRO. i have adjusted the p2p settings: maximum ports is set to 1024. (max i can go with the v6, not 4096)
tcp and udp timeouts are 90 seconds. (aim stays connected)
4. i have also heard that dd-wrt, as well as the original firmware save list of incoming ip connections for something insane, like 5 days. using p2p generates 1000... Read more

Answer:SOLVING p2p causing internet slowdown/router disconnect/router reboots

I love Linksys, but when it comes to a router for p2p, Linksys WRT series is one of the worst. I'm using the WRT54GL and once I get to around 1000 active connections, my speeds slow down to less than a crawl. I'm using "DD-WRT v24 (05/24/08) std" and have just learned to live with the slowdown. As for the reset, it happens to me once in a while, but it might be the link between your router and ISP that is causing the reset. As for theDD-WRT settings, I have my TCP and UDP timeouts set to 300 and that seems to be the best I have found to keep my torrents at good speeds and still have normal internet accessibility. As or the router showing active connections even though you have limited them is simply because they have to go through your router, thus your router holds the connection for that IP, while the torrent client rejects it. Limiting the connections at the software won't help your router for clogging up. You can limit the amount of connections allowed through the router, but that in turn will also limit your browsing due to the fact that you need to connect to the http server to view the pages.

I'm not aware of the connection log as it don't seem to be an issue with me. I don't know much about other routers out there. I'm sure that some company has addressed this issue considering the popularity of p2p and especially torrents. You might need to do some looking into a new router, or just learn to tolerate it during... Read more

I don't know if this is possible, but this is what I want to do:
Have the dsl modem router and linksys voip connected together.
I want the voip router to assign dhcp and the dsl modem router to
be used to get internet access but not assign dhcp (I think)

This is why I want it:

I have 8 wireless linksys cam's configured through the voip router.
Setting the cam's to the modem router didn't work well because of
AT&T's firewall cannot be disabled, only modified to open ports. It's frustrating as when I opened the ports for the cam's, a consistant "an unknown error has occured". So I opted to just set up the cams on the linksys router as the cams are also linksys as well. Thus, figuring they would communicate better anyway.

This is my problem:

When I connect the dsl modem router to the
WAN port on the linksys router, the dsl modem assigns it
a fixed LAN ip. What I want is the linksys router to pull a WAN ip so I can log into my cam's remotely from my laptop at home.
No matter what I do, disable dhcp on linksys router, set linksys router on the dsl modem router to DMZ, set linksys router to bridge mode.....
nothing seems to work.

All I want to do is configure the linksys router so that when I go to my internet explorer on my laptop and type in " to connect to the cam's. But when I go to linksys router config. pages to see the status, the internet ip is which is a LAN address assi... Read more

Here's my problem... I have a wireless router (1st router, Linksys speed booster), which is connected directly to the internet. From one of it's LAN port, a 50 ft ethernet cable is connected to the 2nd router's WAN port (Vonage 2 phone plug router, Linksys). From the 2nd router's LAN port, a network printer is connected. Now here's the problem, because my laptop connects wirelessly to the 1st router for internet access, how do I print and see any devices connected to the 2nd router? I can't seem to connect to the printer in anyway through this setup. There has to be a way. I can not eliminate the 2nd router because it's my vonage device phone. It requires internet. I also can't relocate the printer because it needs the vonage device for fax. Let me simplify the current setup through a series of descriptive connections.

Can somebody help me?

Answer:How 2 setup a netwrk prnter that cnnects 2 a router which is cnnected 2 anther router

If you put the VoIP router first, you can connect the second router as follows. The problem is that you have the NAT layer of the second router between you and the printer.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

no, that will not work as it is only a 'wire connector' and not a signal converter.

here's how; do not put anything into the RJ11 slot on the ADSL WiFi router.

connect an ethernet cable from a LAN slot on the router connected to the phone line
TO another lan slot on the WiFi router. This will cause the WiFi router to act very much
link a switch. Just be sure the DHCP service (on this device) is disabled and only the primary router has DHCP active.

You will still need to setup the WiFi configuration (but do so ONLY with a wired connection to it).

I was trying to make my sister-in-law's wireless connection secure (they've had wireless set up for awhile unsecured), and all seemed to go well until magically, it didn't. It allowed me to set up a password -WPA2/Personal, it was fine, other devices (ipod Touch and another laptop) connected to the network by putting in the right key. HOWEVER, the original laptop, now wants no part of connecting to this network. It finds the network, but doesn't even let me get to a stage at which I need to enter the WPA key. It automatically says it can't connect, and is very useless when I hit "Diagnose the problem". I am only marginally less clueless than the people that asked for my help, so please don't get too technical on me. I have spent hours trying to figure out what the problem is, and though I know it's obviously something with the computer's setting, I don't know what that is.

When I go to the Network and Sharing Center, rather than being a three-way "map", it's two - the computer, then the internet. There is nothing (ie, router) in between. I have no idea how to get that step back in there.

I have connected the router to the laptop directly, and an internet connection does come up, so it isn't an ISP issue. The wireless does work with the devices mentioned above, as well as my own laptop, just not the central laptop.

I understand it may be a TCP/IP issue (or something like that), but I don't kn... Read more

I have Qwest/CenturyLink DSL, and recently replaced the Actiontec M1000 modem which crapped out after 5 years of service. Replaced it with a Netgear DM111PSP v2 router/modem. Now I cannot get either of my two routers, the Linksys WRT54G or WRT160N V2 to broadcast wireless internet. I've spent the most time on the WRT160N. It will broadcast a wireless signal, but devices that attempt to connect to the internet time out while "obtaining IP address". BTW, I just happen to have two wireless routers on hand, I only need one to work.

I can get internet through the hard wire connection. I have the Netgear modem hooked up to the "internet" port of the WRT160N router, and the computer is connected to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the router. I can access both router and modem setup pages using this setup. The Netgear modem is set up for DHCP server, PPPoA encapsulation, and gets its DNS address dynamically from the ISP. The WRT160N is also set up for automatic DHCP configuration. These are the settings given by running each set up wizard, and this has set me up for some DHCP conflicts.

I think that setting up a dual modem/router in transparent bridging mode (PPPoE) in theory turns off the DHCP, allowing the WRT160N to handle DHCP, but I have no luck even getting my hard-wired internet connection to work if I switch from PPPoA to PPPoE mode. Even if I cut the WRT160N out of the loop and connect the computer direct to the DM111PSP. No internet,... Read more

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

I was attempting to port foreward for my PS3, but was having no luck. Long story short, I tried changing the router's IP to see if it would work. Here's where the problem began. I changed it from to, which I believe may have made it conflict with my modem. Now I'm stuck not being able to access the internet through the router at all or access the router's configuration to change it back. When I try to access it, I just get a "Page not Found". The computer connected directly to the router is running Windows XP. The Router is a Linksys WRT54GS v. 4.

I've tried disconnecting the internet from the Router to see if it would stop the conflicting problem (if that is indeed the problem), but it didn't work. I've tried setting up many different static IP adresses for the computer connected to the router directly, but it didn't work. I've tried nearly everything, but I just can't get it working.

I'm posting this through a computer connected through a switch to my modem.

Thanks in advance.

I have subscribed to DSL and Teleco Video (cable) through my phone company. They provided the Westell Modem (Model #D90-740010-06). It has 4 ports but 3 goto the televisions for cable and the other is going to my personal computer.

I have a Compusa SKU:333628 wireless router I want to connect so i can also use my laptop.

my ISP will not assist since the connection works with model/personal computer with hardwired.

I thought I could just run a cable from one of the ports on the DSL/Router to the WAN port on my Wireless Router, however this did not work. So I ran a cable from one of the ports on the DSL/router to a regular ethernet port on the wireless routher (not the WAN) and I could hardwire both the desktop pc and wireless and connect to internet however the wireless would never work, my pc says wireless is connect but when I open IE or firefox it does not connect.

You have 2 routers - they are both trying to issue IP addresses so it is not surprising that there is a problem. If you can disable DHCP on the wireless router it might work as a wireless switch or hub. It is worth a try.
