Slow internet speeds on WIFI

Question: Slow internet speeds on WIFI

Hi all.

ok, this is my first post so hello to all.
i have ther following.

TP link router pre N 150 mbps and a TP link WIFI dongle also 150mbps.
I have a Virgin 50 meg internet connection.

When i download using a newsgroup via ethernet i get around 53mbps constant. no drop outs and very reliable.

Same PC same servers using WIFI dongle and i get MAXIMUM 30mbps. the speed regularly falls down to below 5mbps and then speeds up again.

I recently re-installed windows 7 and on my previous install i had the same problem, i downloaded SG TCP IP optimiser and it worked i got 47 mbps, i tried it again though on this install and it didnt.

The dongle is the TP link WN727N, this has no drivers on TP links website as it says windows 7 will automatically install the driver for it.

Any suggestions on how i can fix this?

Preferred Solution: Slow internet speeds on WIFI

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi steve.

I would bet you are using "homegroup" as your network model. homegroup on some systems is flaky. You can test it for yourself by simply creating a new network connection using the workgroup model. If the problem is fixed you can then disable IPv6 and kill homegroup

Hi

I live in a townhouse in a college campus which means we all have the same ISP. I checked the channels and checked wifi stumbler. They both look good. For the last few days I have been getting really slow internet speeds after 7 pm till 1 am. I am paying for 25 mbps but around that time I get 0.5 mbps. I have the latest firmware for the router. I talked to customer support twice and all they did was reset my router and tell me to power cycle it. It can't be range of the router because my laptop is right next to it.

Can someone please help me fix this problem.

P.S: Here is my speed test: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1759174150.png

Note: I usually get very low ping.

My new HP laptop 15-ac114nx [Intel Core i3 @ 2.00GHz, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD] running Windows 10 64 bit has a serious wifi problem. Ever since I have bought the laptop Wifi internet speeds seem to be comparitively very slow on battery than when plugged in. I have a 20 Mbps connection which provides a reasonable browsing and download speed on all my other devices. The issue with this laptop is that when running on battery and connected using wifi even opening a webpage such as facebook or youtube takes an awfully lot of time lets say like 5 to 10 seconds and sometimes much more, whereas if I do the same with the power cord plugged in, the web pages appear as soon as I click their links(i.e. Vey Fast/Instantaneously).  To add further clarity to the situation I tested the download speed of a particular file while running on battery and with the cord plugged in. I started the download of a file [Java Development Kit ~ 160MB] using chrome with the cord plugged in and navigated to the chrome downloads page to monitor the download progress. The download speed was about 1000-1200 Kbps. Midway through the download I removed the power cord. Immediately the speeds dropped down to 20-30Kbps and sometimes even much lower.  After approximately 10 seconds I plugged the cord back in and wow the download speed went back up to approx a 1000 Kbps. After sometime I removed the cord again and as a result the speed dropped down again. Plugged the cord again and it rose back up. NOw this c... Read more

I recently purchased a Z570 and have been having problems with extremely slow internet speeds. My other laptop that is on the same wireless connection gets over 10 mbps download speed while this laptop only gets 0.2 mbps! I tried looking for solutions but couldn't find any for this particular laptop. I tried messing with some of the settings on the WiFi adapter but nothing helped.

Here is my story thanks for looking. Due to some connection issues (due I think to a dodgy phone extension) I have decided to setup a wireless network. I have purchased a TP-Link wireless adapter and have setup a wireless network with my netgear dg834g (both wireless B/G )without too much trouble. The only problem is when i do a speed test my download speed drops massively using wireless. With the lan cable connected it varies between 6 and 7 meg (which i am quite happy with). As soon as i connect through wireless it is constantly 1.7meg down 0.4 up. Is there a simple solution to this problem Any help would be much appreciated. Also different speed tests online give different results, I use think broadband is this the best one???cheersBlacky

My LAN speed is usually around 5100 via my SpeedTouch router ST585v6. When I am using my Laptop, an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 with an AMD quad Core cpu, not the fastest of computers!, I seem to get WIFi speeds as low as 1700 whilst at other times can get 5000.
The Router is only about 6 feet away from the Laptop! Is the speed drop a "computer problem" or a router one? If I connect the Laptop to the LAN the speed will always be at about 5100. My desktop computer is connected to the LAN and has a speed of 5100.
I have the usual security set on the Router.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Is your wifi adapter up to date?
It could be due to interference- do you have a cordless phone, for example, near? Have you tried changing the wireless channel on the router? Try 1, 6 or 11.

I have and Ideapad that I received in January and the wifi download speed is less that 2Mbps while the upload speed is above 30Mbps.  I have updated all the drivers and ran the update scan tool to make sure all is up to date and according to the tool, everything is current.  All other machines in household ( including another Lenovo) have download speeds of above 30Mmbs.  I'm running the Windows 10 image that came with the machine; Windows 10 Home, version 1607, build 14393.693.  Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

All of a sudden the wifi on my laptop has been really slow lately. I remember before I could stream 720p videos without any buffer on Youtube. Now I'm lucky if I can somewhat stream a 340p without the occasional stutters/buffers. Sometimes I would be getting 39 Mbps or 52 Mbps (if I'm really lucky) , but most of the times I would get either 26-19 Mbps. On all my other devices (iPod, Family Desktop, iPhone) the internet speed seems just fine as they can stream in 720p and browse without any network problems. Also I am upstairs with the router downstairs in the family room.

My results from Speedtest.net - 25 ms, 2.56 Mbps Download Speed, 0.38 Mbps Upload Speed.

This result is VERY UNSTABLE, sometimes I couldn't even get 1 Mbps download speed (more like 0.8). I would also have like 50 ms. I am running Windows 8 Pro with a Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.
DHCP is enabled. IPv6 is not. I made sure everything was updated using Windows Update. And I'm only using the windows defender firewall which I made wasn't blocking anything by disabling it and seeing if it cleared up any problems - which it did not, the same thing happened.

Please help me with this issue, its very annoying and frustrating to have a really slow wifi at times and really good at other times.

Hi, over the past couple of days I've been receiving some extremely bad wifi. My download peaks at around 0.04Mbps, my upload peaks at around 4Mbps and my ms jitters constantly. It all started when I was deleting a few background processes on my task manager. Assuming that was the problem, I factory reset my PC. It just got worse.... My PC constantly disconnects me from my wifi, and when I get the error message: "Can't connect to this network", it removes all of my wifi networks and changes to a red X. I constantly get poor internet, even though everywhere in the house is fine - Plus, it takes me HOURS to download 10 - 60MB files... Not only that, but my wifi bars keep jittering from 2, to 5, to 3, to 1, to 5 again. I don't know what's going on, but I need some help. I've tried everything

I purchased a Realtek 8188CU USB WiFi adapter
It is identical to this one, just without the antennae.

I think I'm running into a driver issue with this. The speeds on it are horrible despite full signal strength.
I have a linksys WUSB54GS adapter and it works fine. I am getting speedtest speeds of 13mb down/ 5mb up with the Linksys adapter

The Realtek 8188CU adapter on the other hand is getting speeds of 3.5mb down and 5.9mb up

I went to the realtek website and there is no 8188CU driver listed. I have tried multiple drivers including the one that came witth he device, the 8192SE driver and the 8188CUS driver. All of them give me the same result. The ping times are about the same in the mid 20's for both adapters.

Does anyone have any input?

Answer:Realtek 8188CU USB WiFi Adapter slow speeds

you may want to remove all the old drivers and try again

what windows version do you have?
this has worked today with another driver issue not loading
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/remove-old-drivers-after-upgrading-to-new-hardware/
BUT
before you do that - it maybe worth checking the drivers

lets see what the device thinks it is - do the following
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to identify hardware in Device Manager

right click on the device with a yellow!

from the menu choose
properties
Click on the Details Tab
Under the Property - drop down
Select hardware ids
Right click and select all
Then right click again and select copy
Copy and paste that information here

You should see a code similar to this

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

please reply with the full code for your device(s)

The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

Vendor ID = 8086
Device ID = 008A

Post back those two numbers make sure we know which is vendor ID and which is device ID

These codes can be looked up at this site http://www.pcidatabase.com/

As an example the link for that database tells us that;
Vendor ID code 8086 is for this vendor - Intel Corporation
Device ID code 008A is for this device - Intel Centrino Wireless-N1030

Hello everyone. I'm having some problems with my wifi and I would like some help. I sat down on my PC today to download some movies. I noticed they were taking too long and as I have had issues with my ISP in the past, I jumped on speedtest.net as quick as I could to find out what my speed was like. As it turns out, I was having speed issues. Just to be sure, I went on a wired connection to my router to see if that was really the case. With a wired connection I got the speeds I'd expect from my ISP. I went to my tablet, my Xbox One, my phone. All wireless obviously and all running at full speed. I went to my laptop again to see if maybe the issue was in fact ISP related and just solved itself. Nope. Still getting slow speeds on wifi. I've tried everything. uninstalled and reinstalled drivers both generic and lenovo provided. I've run diagnostics. Forgive me for my laziness but I have no screenshots. At this point, it's four in the morning and I'm too tired. Maybe I'll get screenshots later by request. I did run the WiFi analytics on the Netgear Genie app and noticed that my signal strength was between 54% and 57% with around -48db and only jumped to 60% when 10 inches or less from the router. I used the Intel ProSet Wireless tools to run a diagnostic. All came out as working and the signal quality was excellent. Under statistics -> percent transmit errors I did notice I was getting 12 percent. Is this supposed to signify packet loss?? If you need any in... Read more

Recently received my new Lenovo Y400, and was enjoying everything aside from the slow wifi speeds... which I attributed to my wireless G router.  I purchased a new Linksys N600 and my wifi speeds are now even slower...  averaging between 100-200 kbps with Steam downloads....  so started wondering if the wifi problems were a result of the laptop.  I connected it straight to the LAN cable and downloads were still only 100-200 kpbs....   terrible.I then decided to test the speed of another device on the same router... my phone said its download rate was 400 kbps. I'm completely clueless on how to fix this and any help is appreciated.  Thanks

Answer:Slow Wifi Speeds With New Lenovo Y400 and New Linksys N600

hi illdub89,

If there's no outage in your area as this, most of the time, is the common cost of slow internet speed, what you can try is to::

1. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if the problem persist. If the speed have increased, perform a clean boot and do another speedtest on normal mode.

2. For the wifi, disable WPS on your router & change your wifi encryption (try to use WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK (TKIP or AES) - latest wifi cards are best compatible with WPA & above encryption

3. Make sure you're using the WLAN Driver v10.0.0.209/6.30.59.26 from lenovo.

4. If applicable, disable the 5Ghz band on router (click here for info) and on the Wireless Card Properties (open Device Manager > go to Network Adapters > right click on the WLAN Adapter & choose Properties > go to Advanced Tab and look for 5Ghz mode)

Hope this helps.

Yes I got an asus s500ca ultrabook and it comes with 4gb onboard ram and has a slot for 4 more. So I installed a stick of kingston system specific ram and my wifi speeds dropped for like 2 days I thought it was the internet being a douche. Then I tested it using my phone desktop and brothers laptop and it was fine I was getting less then 1mbps when I should be getting 30mbps. I opened it up took the ram stick out booted back up ran a speed test got 32mbps lol So I put the ram chip back in same process got less then 1mbps. Did this 3 times.. Does anyone know what would cause this? It dont compute to me lol

I currently have a standard internet plan which offers speeds of 15Mbps. I can get a plan offering up to 50Mbps. I'm wondering, are these speeds realistic, is it worth getting the bigger plan?

In addition to that, I'm looking at getting a new WiFi router. If I am upgrading my plan, is there a router I should consider that would take advantage of those speeds?

I used to have an Acer laptop until the screen cracked about a week ago and I replaced it with an HP Pavilion. When I was using the Acer laptop, I never had any problems with my college's wifi, but a few days after I switched to the HP laptop I noticed a decrease in browsing speed. This decrease was extreme if the page I was trying to load contained images/videos. Additionally, my download speed was horrific, at about 9 KB/sec. Lastly, I have had trouble connecting to the network, with my computer telling me it can't connect several times before it connects. I uninstalled Java, disabled firewall, uninstalled antivirus programs, cleared browser cache, which helped a bit. Then, oddly at about 8 PM last night, the browsing/download speed of my computer returned to normal. However, it is as slow as ever this morning. I'm fairly certain the increase in speed was due to the fewer number of people connected to the network. Any ideas on what the root cause of the problem might be?

hello everyone,

recently i have noticed that the internet speed of my pc is a lot slower than that of my laptop. They are both connected to the same wifi network we have at home.
I ran numerous speedtests at the same time on both systems with all other browser tabs and things closed, and generally, the download speeds on pc were half of the laptop results. The upload speeds were generally closer together.
The speed on my pc isnt unbearable, im just confused as to why its different than that of my laptop.
I live in Australia, and the internet speeds are already pretty low.
Both systems have windows 7 64 bit and my pc is about a year old, whilst the laptop is about 2.
i havent yet done speedtests on other family members laptops and things in the house.

What are my options?
let me know if you need more detailed information
thanks

I have verizon Fios internet service. Here's a screen shot of my cellphone, using wifi and a screenshot of my computer using ethernet cable and actiontec powerline network adapters.
How can I change the ethernet speed to match the wifi speed?

Answer:verizon Fios: wifi and ethernet, 2 different internet speeds

FIOS is the best Internet service available in the US and you are lucky to have it. The discrepancy between wired & wireless throughput is legendary and there are lots of comments about it. In general the cause is obscure in most cases - wireless throughput is subject to all sorts of issues that are not present with a wired connection. In general you should not expect wireless speeds to match wired speeds - there are just too many variables in play with wireless. For instance, a fish tank can suck up wireless signals like a sponge, as can a steel beam or a large flatscreen TV.

Hello,
I'd like to say Hi to everyone on the Forums, and see some people with alot of knowledge in these areas. I moved to the Czech Republic recently and found an apartment offering free internet. I never had to worry about speed, as it was quite good enough in the first few months. Then our landlord called in a technician to install WiFi for the bar downstairs. Our apartment is on the second floor, and landlords on the third. Only the bar has Wifi, and the rest of us still have the wired Connection.

Since that happened, my internet has been running around 100 kb/s and jumping from that to 50 kb/s down to 0 in the matter of seconds. It takes me hours to download little patches for games. I can't skype with my family back home due to the lag on webcam or disconnecting completely. Up stairs our landlord is always downloading stuff, and never has a problem. We've brought the problem up several times, but to no avail.

Is there something wrong with the wires leading to the router? There is a universal router for everyone, and it didn't slow down our connection before. The wire running into my apartment also is connected to a router, then my PC. I'm curious why our upstairs neighbors have perfect internet, yet we are struggling to watch youtube videos.

Thanks for your time,
Mike

Hi, I just got Comcast internet a few weeks ago. They supplied us with a Motorola sb5120 surfboard modem. Ive noticed that it gets really slow, I mean soooo slow that 56k beats it by a lot. The downloads of the web start at 25k and diminish to nothing and the download cancels.

The Internet did run great the first week or so, it recently did this.

Oh yea and if it means anything, In task manager under the networking tab it says Network Utilization is under 1% most of the time and other times its jumping around like crazy {ex. 17%, 2%, 3%, 14%, 8%, 1%, 16%}

Dear all,

I'm running a small network of around 40 users, 35 users on windows XP & Vista and a further 5 on Mac's OS X. We have an sDSL 1Mb connection, 2 x windows 2000 Servers, 1 PDC with AD, DNS and DHCP, the other with ISA 2000.

wall point-------sdsl Modem------Switch
|_______ ISDN Backup
|_______ ISA External Adaptor

Everything works fine but every so often the Internet grinds to a halt running at approx 10kb/s when it normally runs at around 846 kb/s. This problem occurs to both upload and download speeds. A reboot of the sDSL connection corrects the slowness.

Is some user hogging the bandwidth with some nasty app, malware infection or is it some faulty hardware. I've check the firewall logs and nothing has really come up.

If anyone can help me with a possible cause or help in locating the fault it would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Chris

For the past week or so, my internet has become extremely slow. I usually get around 7-8 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up, whereas now, I am getting 0.61 Mpbs down and, oddly, 4.05 Mbps up. Does anyone have any help or suggestions as to why my dl speeds, all of a sudden, decreased so much, while upload speed is the same? I restarted both, my router and modem, but that didn't help any. I am running Windows 7 with a linksys wrt54g router (which is secured) running ddwrt.

Thanks

EDIT: I just ran a wired speed test, which gave me great results --19 Mbps down and 7 Mbps up. Something must be up with my router/wireless connection. Any ideas as to whats wrong? I have everything's, wired and wireless, connection statically configured (ip, subnet mask, dns). I hope it's not a hardware problem since this router is less than a year old.

The issue im having started around march this year, basically my internet speeds will randomly just drop by 70-100%. This happens on all my devices. When im playing games or watching streams, the game will do 2 things, either i would rubber band or my game would just disconnect me, same with watching stuff online, it will buffer, go into lower quality and then just stop, even when im just browsing the net, pages will load slow.

I have 1 pc connected wired to the router, the rest of the devices are wireless on 5ghz connection.

Things ive done,
- Reset modem/router
- ive been giving 3 new modems and routers from my isp since the issue has been happening.
- i had 5 techs come out to try to fix it, nothing happened.
- had the wires replaced
- got a new amp for my wires

I believe this issue started to happen after i got a new router due to my old one having a faulty power cord. but ive gotten 2 new modems and routers since so idk.

I did have a tech say it could be due to me only having 1 tv connected to a box, the rest are just connected to cable. but i doubt this is the issue

Can someone please give me anymore ideas or things to try to fix this issue please.

Answer:Slow internet speeds throughout the day

You have cable internet service?

I infer from your thread title that your bandwidth is considerably greater during the evening/night than during the day. Is this correct? If so, does the slow down and speed up happen rather suddenly or slowly? Also, if so, about what time does the slow period begin and end?

Hello,I have a query, I have a Belkin router which is set up on the main pc which has broadband internet and im runnin XP, on another pc it has XP and has a Belkin wireless usb adapter, i have had this set up for about a year and all was well, for the past two days i have noticed that when i tried to send files through msn it was to slow a connection and when i tried to use house call (trend micro online scanner) it kept saying alert slow internet connection but the other pc with the adapter runs perfectly, does anyone know what my problem is?

Answer:slow internet speeds

Are you running that adapter with software or driver-only? Might just need a re-installation.

I have a Pipex Max account which gives me up to an 8 meg line with unlimited downloads. However most of the time I am running at close to or less than dial up. Pipex tell me I'm at the end of the pipe furthest from the exchange so my access is affected by the number of clients online. This I understand, but shouldn't the ISP's have to assure a minimum bandwidth to their users. If not I might as well be back on dial up.

Please can anyone shed some light on this rather tedious problem.

hi guys having a bit of a problem at the mo, my internet speeds always been a bit rubbish even tough I?m supposed to get 8Mbps i tend to get 1.5Mbps however the last two days I have be getting around 70Kbps I have rang up the ISP and they have ran a speed test and said "every thing is ok from there end" but the speed hasn't increased at all. I know the may be a problem with the line but I have to wait 24hr before getting to do anything about it. I read a PCA news article about BT giving away a free BT accelerator and have checked that it is compatible with the box I have and would like to hear from anyone who has used one so i can get an idea of what to expect before getting it. I?m hopping that this may help with my speed problem without the need to pay £60 to BT any help would be helpful also any info on how to test the line myself and save me the cost of an engineer

Answer:slow internet speeds

As far as I know removing all the internal wires except numbers 2 and 5, does exactly the same as the BT accelerator.Other ways to speed up the internet connection are:1. These two registry key changes will make web pages display slightly quicker as the number of simultaneous downloads is increased. Backup the registry in Windows 98 or create a system restore point in XP, Vista and Windows 7. In a Run window (Windows key+R), type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry keyHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings Look for two keys in the right pane, MaxConnectionsPerServer and MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server. If they exist, then right-click on each in turn and Modify the value to decimal 10 (hex a). If the strings don't exist in the right pane, they will need to be added manually. To add the two keys, right-click in the white space in the right pane, select New > DWORD Value, type the first name as the string name, press Enter and then repeat the procedure for the second one. Now modify the values to decimal 10 (hex a). As the registry key is a CURRENT_USER one, the change needs to be done for each user of the computer.2. Turn off 'RSS Feeds' by going to Internet Options > Content Tab > Feeds and Web Slices > Settings and uncheck Automatically check feeds for updates.3. If Internet Explorer is running slowly, you may be running too many add-ons. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Manage add-ons? then disable any unnecessary add-ons.4. Re... Read more

Im at university and in the halls the internet works via a proxy.

I have set up my browser settings etc. correctly (auto detect) and it has been working properly the majority of the time.

Lately it has loaded pages extremely slowly and downloads have gone down from their usual 100kb/s + to 5kb/s or worse!

So far I have tried the following:
tried a different cat cable
tried a different wall socket from another persons room (ruling out the port)
resetting the VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
reinstalling VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
updating VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter to latest version
tweaked the driver settings (although not sure what im doing, just experimented !)
temporarily disabled firewall
temporarily disabled anti virus

i also did the useless vista network diagnosis thing.

it has happened once before and i think i fixed it by doing a system restore, but now for some reason there is no restore points there.

thanks in advance for any suggestions

[edit] LAN gaming still seems to work fine if that makes any difference

Answer:Slow internet speeds behind a proxy

Try this

update to a more secure Hosts file
There's lots of important info on that here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
As it's difficult to see the actual download, here it is: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip
Important! Windows Vista requires special instructions: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm

Simply download the hosts.zip file, extract, then run mvps.bat, then restart

[Important Notice - 2K/XP/Vista Users]
In most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs
in W2000 and XP. Windows 98 and Windows ME are not affected.

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart.Click to expand...

Then restart, and test browsing the Internet again

Also which Antivirus do you have? (not Norton or AVG8 or McAfee, I hope :suspiciou)
Because it's very strange (I know) but disabling your Antivirus is not the same as uninstalling it fully
Therefore, if you still have issues, this time try uninstalling your Antivirus
And depending upon which one you had, the free Avira Antivirus is preferred
Also try this...

Start computer in safe mode.
logon on to administrator.
Click the start button
Search "cmd.exe"
Select it an... Read more

I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s7713w desktop computer. It has the AMD Sempron 3500+ processor, Asus A8N-BR mobo with integrated graphics and onboard audio and LAN (Realtek RTL8201CL 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Controller), and came with Windows Vista. I have 1.5Mbps Verizon DSL and connect the modem using the Ethernet. I went through many months with HP and Verizon about the slow download speed, it downloads at 70 kbps. I have a 7 year old computer with Windows XP Home and it downloads at 1.5 Mbps using the same modem and Ethernet cabel. Hp had me send the unit back and 2 times they put a new motherboard in it and said the problem was fixed. This did not change a thing. Last week I purchased Windows XP Pro and installed it, spending 3 days finding all the drivers I needed. It downloads from the internet at 70 kbps!!!! I think the problem is in the motherboard, can you offer any help.

Answer:HP s7713w Slow internet speeds

If HP has actually installed two motherboards, then the problem must be elsewhere unless they're lying which isn't likely. Perhaps there is a BIOS setting problem or conflict. There is a BIOS update at the HP web site for your PC, but it says it will only run under Vista. You have XP right? There is a Readme in the download that explains how to flash the BIOS by booting to a DOS floppy, so the operating system shouldn't matter, but be careful. Nowhere does it say that it will work correctly under Windows XP. It also doesn't mention anything about an internet fix in this BIOS update, but there is a P-n-P IRQ fix which may apply to the ethernet. But I'm not sure, and I'd hate to be the guy that showed you how to destroy your motherboard with a bad BIOS. If I were you, I'd contact HP again if the PC is still under warranty, or contact your ISP. I would think that somewhere in your original paperwork there's a serial number for the motherboard. If so, compare this to your current motherboard. If they match, then you know HP never swapped motherboards....

EDIT- I was just thinking, you could always get a PCI ethernet card, or a USB to ethernet adapter. Either one shouldn't be over $20 (maybe $25) at any PC shop. Then just disable the on-board RealTek 10/100 adapter.

Okay, so, on my phone, my speeds are what I expect and pay for (90 Mbps down and 11 Mbps up); however, on my PC, my download speed is crazy low (~5 Mpbs down and 11 Mpbs up). I just currently moved; I did not have this issue at my other home. Also, on all my other devices, like my phone and Xbox, I do not have this issue. I have read similar fixes about this, but none of this works. I am intrigued why it's only the download speed, but I mostly just want my speeds back. Please help; I would appreciate it very much.

Over the past month or so my internet and computer speeds have been rapidly declining. I have a 20mb download speed usually, but I am not getting only 3, while another computer on the network is getting around 18. I will post my logs, and any help would be useful. I have no idea what is causing this issue, but I am lead to believe it is a virus.

Hey,

First post here, i have been using forums quite a bit just browsing though to help my self with any problems i come across, but i have come to a dead end.

I have been running Windows 7 Home Premium since the 18th December first installation there was no problems every thing went fine.
Then last week i had to reinstall WoW as i was getting alot of BSOD "Memory Management" errors which i linked to the game as it was the only time i got it as has a couple of my friends.

When i came to reinstall WoW it wouldnt let me, kept arising with "installer has stopped working" every time, so i decided to format and start again wish a fresh install, seens as i didnt have much on pc to loose.

With he installation problem now fixed, i cannot get my internet to work, I have a Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) ethernet adapter, it has the most recent driver (which i used on the first installation of windows).

Yet when i first load up the pc it works with the full 10mb (Virgin Media) connection i have, after about 5 mins of being online i notice a massive reduction in performance and run an isp speed test and this confirmed i was only running at 1.98mb connection....

I have tryed several of the ideas that are around disable IPv6 etc to no avail.

I have also ran the pc in safe mode with networking and i get the same results, 5 mins of full connection then a drop in line speed.

Does any one have any ideas as to what could be the cause of this?

Thanks in Advance

Answer:Slow internet speeds/downloads

The latest driver came out a few days after your first installation. Maybe this one is newer than the one you tried before. It's dated 12/22/10. version 7.011

Maybe try one of the alternate download sites. There are many complaints about the Realtek RTL8168 dropping connections with Windows 7, they all seem to point at the driver as the source of the problem. Maybe try one of the older Vista drivers.

It also might work if you just uninstall the old driver you have now and let Windows automatically install a new one. People have reported that to work for them.

Also make sure that the adaptor isn't going to sleep by checking in the Advanced Power Options control panel.

To start off im new to this forum and am sorry if this post is in the wrong section.

Anyway, at home we are with Tiscali (now Talk Talk i believe) and pay for broadband speeds up to 8meg. Untill yesterday the internet was fine and i was getting around 5-6meg in my room (connected via net plugs). Yesterday i came on my pc and noticed that web pages were loading very slowly and the internet would often disconnect. I ran a speed test and found that my download speed was around 0.19 and my upload speed was 0.05. I ran the test again today and the results were very similar. Is there anything i can do about this or is it down to Tiscali?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Desperately slow internet speeds

It's almost surely the modem, interior wiring, or your ISP. If nothing changed on your end, the top suspect would indeed be the ISP.

Hi guys,

Over the past week or so I've been experiencing some ridiculously slow net speeds. I've run speed tests on 3 different sites. The site that my provider (Optus) recommended, speedtest.net, showed a completely normal speed of 30mbs down and 1mbs up. The google speed test showed a much different reading of 0.5 down and 0.03 up. This was also the case on the 3rd site i used. Now I'm not very tech savvy, so I usually check my ping by looking at a steam game servers ping, which under normal circumstances is about 20ms. At the moment its sitting at 700-1000ms. Another option I use is looking at my 'discords' latency, its currrently sitting between 1000-2000. My friend also told me use the cmd prompt option and to see the ping for google. The readings were consistently between 1300-1800 ping.
I've called Optus and they've told me that they cant see any faults in line from their end.
Finally, I've reset the modem numerous times to no avail. If anyone has any idea what might be causing this issue, it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers

So for the past few weeks my internet has been going incredibly slow for the majority of the time. I am with Virgin Media on the L package (up to 4Mb).

Before a few weeks ago my internet speeds tended to be fine and I would regularily get download speeds of 400+ KB/s and upload speeds of around 45 KB/s. But recently I am getting overall download speeds of about 10 KB/s if i'm lucky.

My download speed seems to be affected the most as my upload speed still gets about 50% of what it should be able to do.

I use Opera web browser and most of the time when I actually browse websites the speeds can be around 500 B/s which is just ridiculous.

My Equipment:
===========
WRT54G Linksys router (DD-WRT v23 SP2 firmware)
Sitecom Wireless Network PCI Adapter MiMoXR WL-151
Windows Vista Business 32bit
The driver on my wireless card is up to date (according to Windows Update anyway). My signal strength is usually at least good (3 out of 5 bars). I would try to connect it with a wire but my router is the opposite side of the house.

My router is WEP encrypted.

I have attached a screenshot of a DU Meter Stopwatch for 10 minutes. Show information from a 10 minute session of me simply browsing the web at 11pm which is after the peak times for Virgin Broadband. As you can see the average speed is extremely slow.

Here are my ipconfig /all results:

Hi all,
I recently got a new pc (very powerful) for gaming. it was brill at first but now internet speed has dropped to 20kb per sec!!!!!I checked the laptop with speed checker and that was fine (about 4mb/s)it's just the pc. I rang BT they cleared the line, did a speed check and it was back up again. tried to download something (15gb) 2 days ago and at 30% it froze but it was overnight so not sure what happened tbh. I cancelled the download and started again, it was at 54% this time then the internet dropped off again back to 20kb/s.... I'm back to square one. I am not able to get fibre optic and 4mb/s is about the best I can get in my area. I am not sure what to do. I have noticed something on the web about clearing my register but I'm not sure what that is for one and also I don't want to clear the register then download something and it happen again.
I have an uber powerfull pc to game on and can't download the games lol
I use a BThub *and have my PC hardwired with an ethernet cable, I have changed the cable but did nothing so I know it's defo something to do with the pc. the laptop is still running at normal speeds also, no drop off, just on my pc. Please help.

Im on a 2Mb/ps Tiscali/Talk Talk package and as of yesterday, and today my speeds will not go over 0.13Kbps on any speed test!I have called the support line and done all the appropriate tests.Have just spoke to Tiscali/TalkTalk customer services again. Still no progress, according to them I am receiving the full 2Mbps. Although Im not getting anything close to that my end. Thanks in advance.

So for the last few days my main work pc has dropped from 80mb/s to under 2mb/s.
The ping is still very low (10-50ms) and the problem persists whether wireless or cabled. (separate adapters - Pci ethernet card / usb wireless)
I have done thorough malware/virus checks and nothing flagged.
All other devices on the network are still getting 30-60mb/s through wireless so I'm making an educated guess that it's a local issue that I'm missing.
When diagnostics are run, network adapters show "media disconnected" but in device manager everything is enabled and up to date, and internet is still running, although painfully slow.
I really can't work out what might have happened.
thanks in advance.

hello,

I am getting very annoyed with this problem. I have spoke to my isp about this problem and they say its my end.

Heres a few of my problems.

1. When using the internet my internet connection can slow to as low as 24.0kb and be as fast as 500kb download. It is never a constant download speed. Also when i am loading websites it takes a very long time to load.

2. When i am on the internet or have windows xp player open listening to music the cpu usage goes to 100% and the computer becomes reallly laggy.

I've just replaced my faulty old modem with a new one (an "Intel 536EP V.92 Modem" (an internal PCI model AMI-2019 by Amigo.com) from dabs.com for approx. £12 inc. p&p.It's installed & working (hence this - my new addition to this old thread!)...But I have a problem re: the new 56K modem's connection speeds... my previous (faulty) modem was V.90 and it used to connect at between 44,000bps and 48,000bps.Now... the new mdoem will only connect at 28,000bps (or maxes out at 33,000!). I've checked that a) the latest drivers are installed (they are) and b) that under 'Modem Properties' in 'Device Manager' the maximum speed (115200)is selected......but I can't seem to get a connection any faster than 33,000bps - which is really affecting download times and also loading new webpages in IE is at a snail's pace...Any suggestions gratefully received!

Answer:Internet Explorer 9. Slow speeds after installation

Are you sure you are running correct version of IE9 for your architecture(ie x64 or x86).
A few blogs have suggested that it depends how you did your download. If you did a web install it quite often causes this problem so you should download the IE9 full installer, reload IE9 and then reinstall IE9 if you want it.
Also it depends upon the mode in which IE9 is operating - have a look at this articleenter link description here explaining about Software rendering mode.

Hello. We've been using a 2Wire DSL router forever, connected over WiFi, with between two and three computers hooked up to it at any given time. All of the computers have performed as you'd expect them to when connecting to the Internet.Recently (within the past two months or so), one of our computers has slowed to a crawl. It continues to connect to the Internet, with no changes to the router, it just does it at a snail's pace that leads some pages to time out before they can even load. The other computer continues to run exactly as it has forever. I've done my best to search out malware of any kind, and haven't found any. Based on the use of that computer, I don't find that surprising. The only real difference between the two computers is 32 vs. 64 - the newer 64 is the one suddenly not working as far as it should.I've browsed the boards here on Computing.net and other forums, and have seen almost similar problems; however, they seem to be cases where there is no connection, not just a suddenly slow connection on one computer against a shared router. If anyone can offer some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all.

I have a TP-link WR940N router and laptop running Vista.
I connect to the router over wireless network.

My initial problem was that the connection kept dropping from Local and Internet, to Local Only.
It would temporarily keep losing the internet then regaining it again 30 secs later.

However, after changing the wireless channel, this seemed to fix the issue.

Now my problem is that the internet speeds are extremely low.

I know it's not a problem with the incoming internet or the router, as there is another laptop in the house (running Windows 7), and the connection speeds are really good.

After running the ping command straight to the router on the Windows 7 laptop, I get these responses:

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

When I run it to the Vista laptop, I get these responses:

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1164ms TTL=64

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=925ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

So, something's obviously wrong here.
By the way, both the laptops are within 3 foot of the router when I ran the tests.

Does this information trigger any obviously fixes to anyone?

Answer:Slow internet connection speeds on router

Hi:Question.Was it always slow?
Are both laptops running the same antivirus suite ? Some suites can be large resource hogs and the file interrogation can slow down the internet experience.
Two things you could do fairly easily, are :
Install any more current router firmware and check the pc maker's web site for any more current driver for your wireless adapter.
This will at least eliminate those areas as a potential problem.
Also,have you run a virus/spyware scan lately ?

Win XP Pro SP2
Hey everyone. I have an issue that's driving me nuts. All of a sudden my internet download speed seems to have dropped. But, when viewing my connection or doing online speed tests, the speeds are actually great. I cannot stream video most of the time and images take longer than ever before to load. Web pages sometimes load fast and other times they will hang for a little while before downloading. If I try to download a file, my download box pops up but takes at least a minute or two to begin showing progress. Its as if im behind a proxy or something. The real kicker is that when im in safe mode with networking my speeds are great. My actually system is working as smooth as ever. Any suggestions here?

Thanks,

Mike

Answer:Slow/Unstable Internet Speeds after Win 10 Update

I fixed it! Turns out it wasn't the operating system at all. Apparently I had mistakenly installed a program called "cFosSpeed Internet Accelerator + Ping Optimizer" during my transition to Windows 10, thinking it was an essential driver. I disabled it by going to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections > Wireless Network Connection Properties > Networking and deselecting "cFosSpeed for faster internet connections (NDIS 6)". This instantly improved my download and upload speeds. I've uninstalled it now, and XfastLan is bringing up an error, but the internet speed is still improved.

Hi there.

So today my friend and I, who live in the same country, was downloading this file. It was around 6GB, which is irrelevant, but yea. It was from the same site, we have the same internet, yet he was downloading with 2.6MB/s while I was downloading with 1.338MB/s and it stayed like that for the remaining 40 minutes. Didn't even move at one point, while his went from 2.1 to 2.6 over 10 minutes.
Worth noting, we use the same ISP, he only have 25/2 while I have 50/5, and I could easily download 2 files with the exact same speed (1.338MB/s each), but not 1 with 2.6MB/s or more. There's also a client downloader, for this game, where he again got 2.6+ whereas mine always stayed at an amazing 80-180kb/s. I tried disabling anti virus, firewall, Malwarebytes, nothing changed it. I know you're thinking it's just the seeds or site that is limited to an x number of download speed, but it really can't be the case in this. It happens with every site I try. It's always at 1.3xMB/s and never moves regardless of how good it is.
I honestly don't remember, but I don't think this happens when it's a .torrent file, using programs like uTorrent with good p2p. It happens in all browsers, and apparently game client downloaders.
I can download 5 different downloads at 1.3xMB/s using all of my available internet, but when it comes to a single file, it for some reason, is impossible.

A lot of rambling in this thread, I apologize.
I'm not complaining about the download speed, but it ju... Read more

I am embarrassed to say I have Time Warner Cable's ****** internet plan at 30 download 5 upload speed. I absolutely hate this company for a lot of reasons but I don't have a choice considering my only other option is Verizon with a maximum of 2 download 1 upload speed. TWC throttles and I can prove it but that is a whole different story. Anyway my internet and Xbox Live is beyond slow from 7pm to Midnight then I get my normal speeds again. I know that these are during peak hours but the speeds I am experiencing is just ridiculous. I am not just basing the slowness on speed tests believe me I know how unreliable those can be. I am basing it on what I am seeing. I have been dealing with this problem for quite some time now and I am just getting so fed up with customer service being absolutely no help so I am desperately looking for some help here. I don't know if there is anything I can do from my end but to help out in any way I can here is my setup.

Note: I do not use wireless, everything is wired.
- My own Motorola SB6121 modem (TWC's modem's are even slower so I bought my own)
- Connected to the port is my Linksys WRT54g v4 router with DD-WRT firmware
- I have my Computer and Xbox connected through my lan ports
- UPNP is enabled (Port forwarding xbox ports or using DMZ does not fix my xbox live lag issue)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know what else to do seeing as I cannot switch ISP's

Answer:Slow internet/gaming speeds at night?

It seems you are not alone. But most of the information that I see is regarding Twitch.tv.

It almost sounds like they are throttling like we used to do to try to curtail utilization. In fact the timeframes are the same.

Falling short of speed tests and traceroutes, there is not much to do if it's on the backbone.

Did you check your speed with a direct connection to the modem?

Hi,

I have a weird issue that I hope someone can help with.

I have a Business Network connected to XLN Telecom FTTC Fibre, going through the BT Openreach Modem and a Netgear WNDR4500 Router. The Router then connects to a Netgear ProSafe Switch.
I have about 12 XP Desktops and Notebooks on my network (business so need XP really).

Recently the Microsoft Security Essentials program started crashing the PCs and hanging on the welcome screen, so I just removed it, and all was well.
A few days later ALL the XP PCs have experienced seriously slow UPLOAD Speeds when doign a Speed Test. The Fibre but it has always been slow, around 8mbps download and 2 - 4mpbs upload. On the XP machines I am getting 5mbps download but only 0.01mbps upload, with a ping of about 300ms.

Gmail and most websites work okay, but secure websites such as eBay and my website CP go really slow or time out. Some websites are also very slow, but if you us IE InPrivate or Chrome Incognito they seem to work much faster.

I thought it was the line, so changed router, factory reset modem, bypassed all the network (connecting a PC directly to the modem and router), had the ISP do line checks.
BTOpenreach have been and tested the line and equipment (they said everything seemed fine) but changed the Filter in the socket and the Modem to the latest design.

I have also tried a few virus and malware tools to make sure it is not a virus (which would be strange on ALL the PCs at the same time anyway)

We just got Google Fiber installed.  The U510 that I have is only getting into the 90mb range for both download and upload speeds.  I know that is good compared to other internet speeds, but the other household laptop is getting 300mb download and 700mb upload.  Both computers are hardwired.  When I go wireless on the U510, it drops to about 10mb download and 2mb upload.  I know the Centrino N2330 card in this computer is not great and I can't seem to find any great info on being able to upgrade the card without maybe flashing the bios or something that is way out of my league.  So is there anything that I could look into that would help speeds?  Maybe the network card maxes out at 100mb??? You should get a speed that varies from 100 to 300 mbps with 300 as the max based on the specs.

I can't quite figure this one out...

Testing my Comcast ISP download speed via speedtest.net it's 13MB (when the computer is connected directly to the router). When I put my new router (fully updated firmware) between my cable modem and computer my download speed is now 6MB!? I understand that I'd take a little performance hit, going through a router. Would you guys agree that something odd is going on?

The router I'm using is:
D-LINK Xtreme N Gaming Router (DGL-4500)

Answer:Faulty Router? - Slow Internet Speeds

That does seem a little extreme, and my first instinct was that the router wasn't capable of handling the amount of data going through it, but it looks like a fairly new and up to date router and has a gigabit wan port, so I'd think it could handle things. It could also just have been random variation in test results unless you've tried a few times.

Hello.
I recently installed Windows 10 on one of my computers, initially I had no issues but (2 days later) I've had a significant drop in speed, sitting at around 250kB/ps.

Other computers on the same network, one running Windows 8 and the other Windows 7 are both maxing my connection which sits at around ~850kB/ps.

Checking the Network activity in resource monitor shows nothing else using it.

Any ideas?

Answer:Slow internet speeds on Windows 10 computer

Hi NuMs

Is this a wired connection. Have your checked settings in the driver, Full duplex?

I assume this happened just recently. Could you go through your Windows Update history and see if new network drivers have been installed?

Recently my wife has been complaining that her pc has been very slow--both on the internet and off. So I did a speed test on her pc for the internet and found download speed was .82Mbps and upload was .08Mbps (we currently have DSL with AT&T and it normally runs 5.60Mbps down and .41Mbps up)

The next day I tested my pc and the results were 5.61Mbps down & .41Mbps up. So I figured that the night before was just a glitch and now everything was okay. WRONG---as soon as she turned on her pc the readings went back to 82Mbps down & upload was .08Mbps again!!

By the way both pc’s are connected to a A... Read more

Answer:pc slow--internet speeds are slow

Hi fred93  Let me see if I can help some of your issue. Run this with the troubled computer. If there is a problem with internet connection, copy the software by USB flash drive and transfer them to the problematic PC and then extract the logs back to the flash drive so you could post them back on your next reply. Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post. Download SecurityCheck.exe from Here. Run SecurityCheck and follow the instruction from inside the code box.. When the scan is finished, a notepad will automatically open as check.txt   Please copy and paste the contents here on your next reply. Can you post also the Router/Modem model next time? Thank you.

Hello, I'm new here. I have come across a similar thread but I believe the solution was for his computer specifically. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me?

Ok, I'm having invisible voice ads, like "Congratulations you've been selected... " and occasionally I'll get a random IE pop-up even though
I'll be using Firefox. I have noticed that my internet speed has dropped,
but I'm not quite sure if that's because of my ISP or something on the computer. Almost always when I boot up the computer, when it reaches the desktop I'll get a message like "Such and such file is missing, C:\blah\blah\blah.tmp" other then that the computer has no noticeable errors...

I am using Windows Vista 64-bit Professional I believe.

Right.

I have no idea why this is occurring. I have full wi-fi signal and I have a fast broadband connection.

Every now and again the connection speed to just one PC drops to a point where there is almost no activity. I get various "connection timed out" and "DNS lookup failed" errors, then after about 10 minutes of frustration everything works again.

I know this problem is isolated to just this one PC as I have done Internet speed tests from another computer.

I have tried using different wireless cards, resetting the router, changing DNS servers. Nothing has worked.
Help?

Hello,

please paste the information into this thread

also go to your router settings and name us the currently set DNS servers

Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can help me. This is my first post. I have been fighting my internet speeds for several weeks now, and Verizon wireless has not been any help. I have a HP Pavillion running XP Media Center. I use a wireless usb modem like you would on a laptop, only I use it on a desktop, so it never moves. I have great cellular signal with it, but my speeds stink up the place. I test at speedtest.net. I have run spybot S&D to try to clean up any spyware (didn't find much), I have run Windows Definder. I have done all the normal disk clean up, scan disk, ect. Here is my HijackThis file:
Any ideas to try would be extremely appreciated.

I have fast internet (180 Mbps) using ethernet cable on an older laptop. Using the same cable on my H530 I get 75Mbps at best. Any suggestions? I downloaded the newest ethernet driver and no improvement. Other devices in the house on ethernet are getting much faster speeds. Would replacing the ethernet card help? Thanks for any advice.

For a while now, my AT&T high speed DSL service has been dreadful for simple networking on the web. Videos on Youtube take forever to download, online games frequently disconnect, and web browsing is very slow. I currently use a Motorola modem along with a Belkin N450DB router; both of these seem to be working just fine with nothing odd going on. However when I use Speedtest I get horrible connection:

Download: .51 Mb/s
Upload: .21 Mb/s
Ping: 119ms

I don't know why these connection speeds are so low for all of the computers in the household, because even if only one computer is using the internet, speeds are still just as slow. Please help me on this problem if you can. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello,

I am new to these forums and have updated to Windows 10 just a little over a month ago. When I upgraded I had to buy a new usb wifi adapter for my computer as my old one would no longer work on Windows 10. I threw away the box on my new adapter but I think it is a AC600. At first my internet speeds were decent, and then they got even better with me often having download speeds on Steam over 1 MB/s. However, over the last few days my internet has not connected and today I managed to get it connected but now everything is so slow I cannot get webpages to load (was going to look for new drivers) or download any game updates. I did manage to get lucky and have Steam work a bit but I am working with a speed of 20 KB/s right now.

I use Comcast Xfinity, but I don't think that is the problem. My iPad, iPhone, and the Mac laptop I am writing this on all work just fine. It is definitely my Windows 10 box. It is past the 1-month I had to roll back to Windows 7 so I need to figure out a good way to deal with this. Do I need a better wifi adapter? Do I need to change settings somewhere? I am up for giving anything a shot.

Any help would be appreciated. I will go ahead an apologize if this exact question has been asked and answered before, I would hate for my first post on a new forum to be an easily found answer. However, I have not found anything that has worked with my problem yet, though my frustration may be playing into giving up early as well. I am somewhat d... Read more

Hi,

So, around 2 months ago, my computer was hit by a virus of some kind. I managed to find all the infected files, delete them and quarantine everything. At least, so I thought. Ever since then when I click on my google search results, (on firefox), they get redirected to a website called scour or something along those lines.

And just today. I went on a website to watch a show online. But my firefox locked up right away. So I open task manager to close it, but now I see many alien processes running. I end the tasks, and then restart firefox. Nothing will load now; Firefox is saying something about proxy settings... or something.. I then proceed to run a malware bytes scan. Giving me this;

In the past month or so, I have noticed my desktop pc internet download speeds have slowed down. I contacted cable (comcast) and they said I am on 6 meg line. I'm getting about 500k. cable guy came out, checked, everything OK.

I then tried connecting my laptop to exact same ethernet cable from the back of my desktop. Good speed.

Cannot figure out why desktop is slow, but not laptop.

Details: (using Speakeasy.net to Chicago (closest to my home))
Desktop:
Download Speed: 3890 kbps (486.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2663 kbps (332.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Laptop:
Download Speed: 21627 kbps (2703.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2674 kbps (334.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Desktop XP Home SP3, 512mb ram, P4 2.4 ghz
AVG 8, COMODO firewall
Laptop XP Media Center SP3, Intel Pentium M, 1.63ghz, 504 mb ram
AVG 8, Windows Firewall

I had Zonealarm and replaced it with COMODO, Avast and replaced with AVG - no luck

One more thing - when I open windows firewall, the ON button is greyed out and I cannot turn it off. There is a message that says "some setting are controlled by Group Policy". OK - How do turn Group Policy off?

I searched thru Majo Geeks and other sites trying to find an answer and have no luck so far.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who's having issues with the speed of her net at home, on one particular laptop. She just purchased a new Asus laptop not too long ago and while she's at ODU her speeds are fine, when shes home it drops very low. She also has another laptop and desktop that are perfectly fine, and get the top speed their isp provides.

On the problem laptop (the Asus)
Shes running windows 7 64 bit, the router is a Linksys E1200, the network card itself is an Atheros AR9485

Her speeds at home are : 0.52 mbps on the Asus, while her other laptop and desktop gets 33 mbps
Her speed at school is 28 mbps on the Asus

So we are trying to figure out why her Asus wants to act up at home and not at school

Answer:Very slow internet speeds at home, but not at school on one laptop

it does not sound like a computer problem -- may be a router/wireless/network setting problem--to try to eliminate possibilities...
try plugging the machine into the router directly with a cable--if the speed picks up then there's a setting somewhere that needs a tweak.

A few weeks ago I installed a SSD into my desktop and installed Windows 10 on it. I never checked my speeds at the time so I'm not sure exactly when my download speeds started to be terrible, but I assume it was then. Other computers on the network get the proper download speed (which is supposed to be anywhere from 30mbps to 50mbps on Time Warner Cable) where mine will get anywhere from 19 to .6 mbps. The upload speed however doesn't fluctuate as badly. I've reinstalled my wifi drivers, I've also tried to use my old usb wifi dongle to see if it was the card in any way, but I still had the same speeds. My card was getting the proper speeds prior to my fresh Windows install so I can only assume either I've done something wrong driver wise (which I can't seem to track down) or maybe it's a hardware issue I introduced by installing the SSD. Either way, I'm lost as to how to fix it. Any suggestions? And one suggestion I cannot do, unfortunately, is hook my computer directly to the router.

Answer:Slow internet speeds since installing SSD and fresh Windows 10 install

Do you get 'normal' speeds when plugging the computer in via Ethernet?

Guys, is there any way I can help speed up my browsing on the internet? I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at.

I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.

Any ideas?

Answer:Extremely slow Internet browsing... Download speeds are fine

If we assume you are not hit by evil infection, then it might be relevant that an older post of yours show you have router with firmware not updated since long. Wireless Routers - Linksys Community Forums try search for it here. Lots of problems like this v4.21.1 of Linksys WRT54G Firmware is Bad - Wireless Routers - Linksys Community Forums though you can say the same for many routers.

So why dont you update to Tomato firmware? If it qualifies, Tomato FAQ | polarcloud.com

That way you can let router handle dynamic IP update (Basic, DDNS) and also get a little boost by increasing build in cache. Advanced, DHCP/DNS can be set up like in the pic. In older post I lost url to did you say Opendns ips changed? They should not. Only 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are allowed I think, see pic for how it looks in Tomato.

Read up on Tomato site, there should not be a risk by "flashing" - can go back. Also dont wonder where firewall went - it is not possible to turn it off

If browsers are hosed by infection good luck Opendns can have problems in certain areas but should be temporarily. Infection is more likely than opendns messing up if set up correctly.

Hello, I have had this problem ever since the summer. I would tell you the speeds I'm getting from testmy.net, but the page is still loading. It's been over 30 minutes.

Anyway, I have installed the drivers for the motherboard that came with the disc and such, and I still have no success. It is really annoying at this point, basically not being able to use my computer.

Any advice for what I should do? I'm connected via ethernet, I will have to get my wireless adapter back from my friend to test that out.

I just purchased a new Laptop (Acer Aspire F 15 F5-571T-569T Signature Edition Laptop) from the Microsoft Store. Everything is fine except the Internet is very slow. Pages loading slowly. Took me like 20 minutes to download Chrome.

On Speedtest I get an verage of 5 Mbps download and 40 Mbps on upload. The upload speed is normal for my tablet and old laptop. The upload speed was at around 1.5 Mbps until I rebooted my router and right after I did that, the next test I did, the upload speed was normal.

I tried rebooting the router a few times after to see if the download speed would be normal, but it remains at around 5 Mbps.

I checked on Device Manager and my network adapter is - Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 Wireless Network Adapter

I have Verizon Fios in Brooklyn and my router is an Actiontech M1424WR

Windows says the drivers for the network adapter is up to date.

On my Dell Venue tablet I currently get about 52 Mbps Up and 40 Mbps Down.

When I check my WiFi status in the Control Panel it says Speed: 65 Mbps.

Something is throttling my download speeds, but I have no idea what to do. I am not too savvy w/ this sort of thing. It seems like it should be an easy fix, but I'm lost and could use some help.

It all started out a week ago with random times where my internet speed would drop drastically but after about 5 minutes it would go back to normal. Then about 5 days ago I couldn't connect to cable with my cable modem the activity light would just pop green over and over again. I used cycling over and over and couldn't get it to work. Finally just today I cycled it and was able to connect to the cable. Whereas earlier I was connected to my network with "no internet access" now I have internet access. Now even thought I'm connected my speeds are at an all time low and I have no ideas why. Any help would be very appreciated!

My computer has extremely slow download speeds, upload speeds are fine. Ping is always at ~10-20ms. (to Google) The problem has nothing to do with, my ISP, my router, my type of connection. I know this for a fact.

I've tried multiple network adapters. USB WiFi, integrated WiFi, connecting through another PC via ethernet, they all give the same result.

I'm guessing this is a problem with some software on the PC itself, as it seems to not be a hardware problem.

All other devices on the network have perfectly fine speeds, including Ethernet and WiFi connected devices.
I also cannot connect this PC to Ethernet, would take hours.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Slow download speeds, Fast upload speeds. Other devices are fine.

In device manager check the status of devices under Network Adapters
