Can't get into BIOS setup utility

Question: Can't get into BIOS setup utility

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite with Insyde H2O bios. It says to use F2 for setup and F12 for boot manager.

I've tried all the function keys, as well as esc and del and they only get me to Windows Boot Manager. (This includes F2.)

The machine has Vista that stops loading when it gets to the network drivers. Could a corrupt BIOS be the cause? If I download a new BIOS can I install it from the command prompt?

If the BIOS is still OK are there other ways to get into setup?

(Meanwhile F2 works just fine on my Dell Lattitude)

Preferred Solution: Can't get into BIOS setup utility

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't get into BIOS setup utility

Try using a USB keyboard...

"Could a corrupt BIOS be the cause?"

I don't think you would get that far in the boot process if the bios were corrupt

I am guessing that something quite wrong was done in 2.20 (and it persists into 2.21). There was no such errant behavior with 2.19, as I've confirmed by reinstalling 2.19.  Works perfectly and boots promptly and the BIOS Setup utility works lickity-split with 2.19, just like it always has.  But with the install of 2.20 the behavior changed drastically.

Looking at the README for BIOS 2.20 this definitely seems like the culprit:

[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue where fan might rotated with max speed due to not reading CPU   temperature correctly.- Fixed an issue where system might not boot to OS when attached an external monitor   and its USB3 devices.- Fixed an issue where network boot might happened at reboot after resume from suspend   by Wake On LAN.

At first I thought I had blown the BIOS update, since my screen was simply black for what seemed like 1-2 minutes after displaying the Lenovo logo and "press ENTER to interrupt" message.  I pressed ENTER repeatedly but nothing happened, for a long time.  Eventually, the hard drive activity LED on the P70 started flashing, and seemingly almost 2 minutes later, the machine came to life and boot process continued normally.

Then, once I entered the BIOS, I used the right-arrow key to navigate through the tabs.  No problem until I got to the Security tab and then pressed right-arrow one more time to navigate into the Boot tab... and it hung!  Didn't go ri... Read more

I need to enter bios, not the "HP setup utility", because in the utility there are no settings for SATA controller. I need to change it to IDE, but in the utility there is no option for that. How do i do it?

Answer:I need BIOS, not HP Setup Utility

Hi: Why do you need to change the setting to IDE? A BIOS update won't add that feature anyway. If you are trying to reinstall XP and get the blue screen stop error, simply add the SATA AHCI drivers. See this guide below.  Read the Intel section and then read the downloadable document for how to slipstream all of the sata drivers. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/SATA-drivers-for-XP-solution-on-... I have zipped up and attached the drivers you need to slipstream below...

I bought a new computer. I am trying to put an operating system onto it.   I cannot boot from my CD or USB drive   It will not even load Vista 64. I have considered putting in a A drive and feeding in the 6 windows XP Pro boot disks to load Xp Pro but would it help? I have resent defaults  to no avail.  When I boot up normally all I get is a black screen.  When I look at dir in DOS it shows everything in A  with no C mentioned  I have tried FDISK When a boot disk is in the drive the computer tells me my drives are not active. In the bios setup utility my boot setting configuration the devices are all in brackets.   The note on the side says a device enclose in parenthesis has been disabled int eh corresponding menu.  Is a bracket the same as a parenthesis? How do I enable my devices?

Answer:Bios setup utility - need help please

In the bios go to the boot order setting and move the cd to the top of the list. Save and exit, boot to your cd.

I am trying to upload the BIOS of my laptop from an USB drive (Asus N53SV, from BIOS version 212 to version 215), but I can't find a boot from USB option in my BIOS.
The BIOS interface I access from the splash screen is Aptio Setup Utility 2.01.1204. I have a dual boot system with GRUB1.98.
If I undestand it correctly flashing from hard disk requires a FAT32 partition (which I don't have) and flashing form cd is a very bad idea.

The preset menus don't have a "boot from usb" option, but if I plug an USB drive in the laptop before booting I can see an "Add New Boot Option" option.
If I try to use this option I'm asked for name, filsystem and a path for an .efi file.
The AMI documentation simply describes the menu without any instruction or explanation.
I can create an entry without the .efi filepath but doing so and putting the entry at the top of the boot order the laptop goeas directly to GRUB after the splash screen.
The only reference I found is: USB Boot - bios trouble in Asus Laptop but it's about a different task.

How can I update my BIOS?
The options I can see in the BIOS interface are:
UEFI boot: enable/disable (D)
PXE ROM: enable disable (D)
Boot Option 1,2, ...
(you can switch hdd and cd-rom, by default nothing else)
Hard Drive BBS Priorities
CD/DVD ROM Drive BBS Priorities
(you can select witch hdd and cd-rom)
[Add New Boot Option]
Delete Boot Option
(allows you to delete custom entry deiveces)
These are the BIOS updates, are they worth the... Read more

Whenever I turn on the PC the first thing that opens is the Award Bios Setup Utility. 2667 MHZ is highlighted and the date and time are wrong by about 9 years.

I set the MHZ on manual and change the date and time and save as I exit. XP runs fine until the next time I start the machine and it happens again.

Is there an internal battery that may be dead?

I appreciate any help,

McKerracher

Answer:BIOS setup utility opens first whenever I turn on the PC

Yes, the CMOS battery on the motherboard could be dead. It is a flat, disk type of battery about the size of a nickle and is commonly available.

When I press F1 for setup, the BIOS setup utility comes up. My problem is when it comes up it locks out the keyboard. I then have no choise but to reboot to use the computer.

The computer works fine in every other aspect. I am running WIN98.

Can you help me solve the keyboard lockout problem?

Acer Aspire V3-772G - BIOS setup utility menu items have disappeared I have setup this brand new laptop, pre-installed with Windows 8.1, for my sister-in-law who bought it.  The installation went well BUT the 16GB USB device which I purchased as advised by the Acer literature to store the recovery partition was not big enough, the physical capacity being 14.4GB.  The Acer book says use a 16GB device or larger so I did.  I naively thought that a USB drive which was labelled 16GB would be appropriate.  Not so.  I have had to buy a larger one but am still awaiting delivery. I therefore decided to image the whole HDD to save the work I had done but found that the Acronis Backup and Recovery DVD would not boot.  I went into the setup utility and adjusted the Boot settings to legacy and changed device priority.  Acronis would not run so I did not continue.  I went back into the setup utility, used F9 to restore the default and found to my astonishment that the DUAL boot option had now disappeared and the Windows Boot option had also vanished. This means that this 800 laptop is now unusable.  The setup utility self-reconfigured without warning.  Nowhere is there any advice or warning not to use the setup utility in case it erases features which cannot be recovered by using F9 to recover the default configuration.  If this is not a serious design fault, I don't know what is.  I am deeply worried because... Greetings.   I have a Z61t laptop and just recently when I booted it up I got two errors:  0176 which is a security/tampering error and 0271 which says the time and date aren't set.  From there I assume it's trying to load the BIOS setup so that the errors can be corrected but it asks for a password which I do not have.  According to the manual removing the main battery and the backup battery will resolve the password issue, but it does NOT.  Nothing I've tried has allowed me to get passed this screen.  I can't even bypass it and just get the operating system to load.  I've read tons of forum threads but so far nothing I've tried has worked.

Hello:

This is my first post here, so hi to everyone.
I just got an ASUS X401a Notebook and I want to use a flash drive to boot from Linux.
I need to change the sequence in the BIOS so that the flash drive is first choice to boot from.
I have no problem accessing the BIOS utility, but it allows me to alter only some settings. Those in blue colored font I can change those in black font I cannot. What drive to boot from first is in black and not adjustable.
I used command line to work as admin and I also set up a password for admin in the BIOS to access the BIOS utility, but still no go; some things are allowed to be changed some aren't.

Any help is appreciated.

Well, I chose the boot as "legacy bios only" after receiving the x220. I did a clean install of Win7 ultimate 64bits (which means the setting soft provided by Lenovo does not work) and then updated the BIOS to 1.15. After all these, the machine runs mostly fine but I noticed that I could not log into the BIOS setup any more. Pressing F1\F2\F12\thinkVamtage when the bootup screen shows up (press thinkVantage bottom....), and nothing happens. It does not beep as it did before and does not respond to the buttom press. That means I could not choose bootup device either - it will log into Windows from HDD no matter how you tried to boot from other devices. Any ideas on the problem? And I guess resetting the BIOS might solve the problem, but how? Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can not log into x220 BIOS? How to reset BIOS setting without entering BIOS setup?

Try turning the system completely off, then power it on and press F1.I've seen strange cases where pressing F1 doesn't work on a warm boot.  It always works on a cold boot.

Sorry to hear you are having problems, there are a couple things we can try:

Enter the BIOS and restore defaults to make sure there wasn't something changed accidentally.
Attempt a start up repair on your system to see if that resolves the issue.
Attempt a system restore to before you started having this problem.
Perform a refresh to try and repair the Windows operating system files, some programs may be lost with that function, which was why I listed it last.

I have windows XP and ran the chkdsk program from the c drive properties.  I got through items 1 thru 4 and 10% of item 5.  It was taking forever to complete, so I turned off the computer to stop it.  When I tried to re-boot, I got the setup utility and could not get out of that.  No matter which mode I try, the boot up splash page opens for a few seconds and returns to the setup again.  Round and round, over and over.  I have re-booted several times to no avail.  What did I screw up?Michael

Answer:setup utility recycles after chkdsk run

No telling - but you cannot interrupt checkdisk without causing major problems. If you have an XP CD, boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r Let's see what happens after that.

Everytime I start up my laptop, it goes straight into the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility, and when I exit, it just starts back into the setup utility again. It's an HP, btw. Any suggestions?

Answer:My laptop starts up in setup utility.

going direct into cmos is usually an indication the cmos battery needs replacement.

Next time you are in save the settings.

Next issue is no boot devices. So when in the bios see if the hard drive is listed and review the boot order and that the hd is listed. Could be the drive died.

I was installing a new SATA HDD when I went into the CMOS to see if it was set right. Now I am frozen on the CMOS Setup Utility screen and I can't get out.....I've entered every key that gives me an option; like Esc, etc. nothing works......what can I do?

The yellow light on the computer is on "steady" as well..

Will I lose the BIOS if I shut it down while in CMOS? Help Please. Thank you.

Answer:Help.....I'm frozen in CMOS Setup Utility

First things fist, you may just need to remove the hard drive you just installed and put the computer back to it's original configuration and try to boot (assuming you were able to boot before). If this does not work, you may have done something to your Bios/CMOS. You should have the option to clear the Bios/CMOS via a jumper on the mother board. I would look for the User's Manual, this will tell you where the jumper is. The other thing is to go to the Manufacturer's website and download the manual.

Hi all, I am new so please bear with me.

Just recently I tried to dual boot xp and fedora and was successful, but then realised that everything had slowed down quite a bit and my wife just wanted it all back to normal.

So I repaired the ms boot record with the recovery console and xp now boots directly from bios, but I now get the set up utility that gives me the option of booting xp or the setup utility for a new xp install. It won't just boot xp straight, and if I leave it it will go straight to the setup utility and I can either install xp again, repair it (which I have already done) or exit. If I exit then the next time I reboot it all happens again.

Please tell me how to get rid of the set up utility so I can go back to normal.

Thanks.

I need to change the boot sequence, but setup is locked and i can't remember the password. I've seen some things that say to reset the jumper by the switch on the motherboard, but i couldn't find it. I also saw something that said to remove the battery from the motherboard for 10 min. or so and the password should be reset, but that didn't work either. Can anyone help?

Answer:Forgot setup utility password.

You need to remove the battery for a longer time like about 45-60 minutes. If this does not work remove battery at night and go to sleep. Wake up in morning and check your computer. Also do not forget to unplug the AC cord as well.

I have an Asus laptop and I got the notification that I can upgrade to Windows 10 if I wanted to. So, I clicked to update it and it did and when I restarted it, my mouse pad would not work. I was able to go into programs and click repair for the mouse and then it worked. I used my laptop for a few minutes and everything was fine and then I closed it and set it aside. Later that day, I opened it and I clicked on Chrome and I got the hour glass. I waited for a few minutes and nothing happened. So, I pressed and held the power button down to turn it off and turned it back on a few seconds later.
When I turned it back on I was at the Aptio Setup Utility screen and no matter what I pushed, I couldn't exit. My battery died and so I plugged it in and turned it back on. This time it said that it was being diagnosed. After a long while, it said they couldn't fix it and gave me the option of restarting it or advanced options. I clicked advanced options and chose to go back to Windows 8.1 hoping that it would return to normal. After that, I assumed it was doing that and I left it to make lunch for my son. When I came back to it and it had been awhile it was just a blue screen and was like that for a long time, so I again shut it down.

I went online and did a search and someone said to enable the launch CSM on the boot section and to disable the secure boot menu and then to restart and I would be able to get to the advanced options/recovery screen. So, I did do that and was ab... Read more

Hi
I bought a new laptop (Asus x75a) and when I received it I turned it on and it went into the aptio setup utility so I set the time and date and went over to save and exit only to return to the same screen. I've restored defaults and loading optimised settings but it always returns to it.
I disabled secure boot and enabled csm and this time it loaded the asus screen and went to a black screen saying reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device.
It should be preinstalled with win8 and no where in the user manuals does it detail the setup utility.
I've searched the web for a solution but I'm yet to find one. I've contacted the seller but I thought whilst I wait I would seek help here.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Hello. Please forgive me for this off-topic-post, but i would like to tell everybody, why i really like APTIO Setup Utility, the best BIOS-Settings.

The great advantage is not only the great user interface and the accurate help descriptions (that Ins?deH20 also has), but what i really love is:
The APTIO Setup-Utility does have ?Boot-Override? in the Exit-Tab‼
I don't have to press F12 to override. I can simply go to the BIOS-Settings. And if i am inside of the BIOS-Settings, i can simply override without exiting the settings and press F12. That's Aptio's greatest advantage. My Samsung 700G7A-S02 does also have APTIO.
Aptio Setup Utility Screenshot:

Other Setup Utilities:

Disadvantage: If Windows is hibernated, DualBoot (e.g. Hiren's Boot CD) is not supported, which did already cause a problem. But other BIOS-Firmwares do also not allow DualBoot with hibernation.

Please note, that this is no sneaky advertisement. This is just my opinion. The screenshots are not from my Computer.

Hi There,

2 days ago, for no reason my PC, on startup went to the CMOS utility setup page, and will go no further. There were no hardware changes, and, unless there were any windows updates, no software changes made. It just boots up with the initial Gigabyte screen then straight to the CMOS screen

The clock is showing the current time and date, so I guess the battery is ok, but I didnt think this would be it since the machine is only 7 months old.

What steps can I take to try and determine if its a mobo fault or a processor fault.
I put this together myself so cant just march back the the shop with a "broken" pc ! :-o

Any suggestions ? all help appreciated

2GB 800MHz DDR2 PC2-6400 Ram
500gb Seagate Barracuda HD
500gb Hitachi HD
Windows XP Home

(Initially 3 months ago the original Seagate HD failed, so I was told to send it back to the supplier, but it may take 6 weeks to get a replacement, so I bought the Hitachi HD locally, installed the operaing system etc, then Dabs sent a replacement HD at the end of the week ! - so I put it in as well, and use this for all videos/music etc, for sharing on the house network)
But everything has been running fine

I have here a Satellite notebook 1800-314. Some 'dealer' has installed Windows XP Professional on but it seems that he has 'forgotten' to instal the Toshiba utilities.
Because of unsolvable suspend and wakeup problems the client came to me and I don't find any Toshiba utilities.
The problem : sometimes the notebook suddenly stops working, the fan is blowing very hard but windows is not responding anymore, you need to turn to notebook off with the powerbutton, but then you can't start it up anymore. Sometimes when you are lucky it does start up.
This problem sometimes also occur when the notebook is in sleep mode.
I have already installed the Toshiba powermanagement but
I need to check the BIOS, only, the Toshiba HW utility isn't installed. I have searched the Toshiba site but I cannot not locate this program for this notebook. Can anyone help me ?

Many thanks.

Has anyone ever resolved the aptio setup utility loop? I woke up with a locked screen on my asus and when I rebooted I opened up in the aptio setup utility loop. Can anyone walk me through a fix?

Answer:how to get out of aptio setup utility loop in Windows 8.1

From reading some of the google hits it looks like when a serious hardware problem occurs and the laptop is rebooted it goes by default to that utility. Some say you need to replace the hard drive but I think that's only one of many things that can cause it. Can you maneuver around in the aptio setup? If so does the hard drive show there? You might temporarily disconnect the hard drive and try booting from a cd or dvd. If that goes OK it may mean the drive is at fault.Other possibilities are a buggy bios update:http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthrea...or changing some bios settings:http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/8...bottom posting by db2k9 (if you can get through that ad-riddled tomshardware site).I assume you have an asus as those seem to be the only ones with that problem.

okay, guys I praying for help! This is my situation.

I own a HP Pavilion dv6-6c10us Laptop, AMD Quad-Core A6-3420M Accelerated Processor.

Something happen to the computer that required me to reinstall windows. I booted the cd/dvd from start go through the process of installation however once I get to the point in which is ask drive to install it on..there are no available drives although my harddrive is in the computer.

I've heard that in order to get pass this step I have to change my bios to IDE ...but in BIOS setting I see 0 SETTINGS TO change anything to anything...again I've heard this is a common problem when using insydeh20 setup utility.

Now again I can't boot up my computer because there is no OS on my hard drive. consider that. IS there any possible way I can either get to the required tab in bios or is there another way that I can resolve this problems..its been months and I still cant resolve this problem.

if I could update my bios..im sure this would help..either way..please help

Answer:Windows 7 installation:insydeh20 setup utility

I'm not sure I can help, but I can give you a suggestion. Boot from the DVD, at the first window, do not select your language, hold down the shift key and press F10, you will get a command prompt. Type diskpart and press enter. Wait for the window to respond diskpart, type list disk and press enter You should see every disk in your machine. That should tell you the disk is there and functioning. When finished type exit and press enter, it should take you back to X sources, type exit and press enter again and you should be back at the select your language screen. It should not matter if you are in IDE or AHCI, if you have a raid array, you may have to load the floppy F6 driver. Most of those options should be in your BIOS. Just sometimes they are in a submenu and pretty well hidden. You should be looking for sata controller or sata mode or something similar. Different brands call it different things, but they are all pretty close to what I said you should look for.

I own a Dell Dimension 3000 with Windows XP. A month ago I got the BSOD with the 000000024 error. Since I wanted to upgrade the 40 GB hard drive anyway I purchased a Western Digital 80 GB hard drive. I installed the HD and the computer beeped two times and took me to the "strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" screen. If I hit F1 it just repeats the same command. If I hit F2 it takes me to the BIOS screen. When I go into drive configuration it shows that the primary master drive is the hard drive and the secondary drive is the cd rom device. the diskette drive A is off since my computer does not have a floppy disk drive. When I try to save changes and exit it beeps twice and takes me back the F1, F2 screen again. I have tried resetting the computer by pulling the battery out for 10 minutes and replacing but nothing has changed. Any ideas?

Answer:I can't get past the F1 to retry boot, F2 setup utility

Is the date right? Is the battery good?

Is the drive set to autodetect in BIOS and/or does BIOS recognize all the correct drive parameters?

What is on the new drive? Did you install an operating system? If it is blank, nothing will boot up.

Answer:Need Help ASAP Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

This is an easy one.

You already know your computer does not detect the presence of a hard disk or other boot media.

I suggest you disconnect and reconnect the disk to be sure it is making connection. If that doesn't work, try replacing the cable with another known-good cable--perhaps one inside the machine currently connected to the DVD/CD drive, Try connecting the disk to another system to see if it is recognized there. It probably won't be, in which case you will simply have to replace the disk drive.

The good news is they are cheap these days.

Last night I woke up to find that my computer had on its display the aptio setup utility. I had never seen this before and turned off my computer. I restarted it in safe mode and after about 5 min or so my computer went to the blue screen of death for like a second then to the aptio setup utility. Now, before this happened I had been downloading files from utorrent for like 3 days straight as well as watching some on my computer (which is an Asus G55vw), so I'm not sure if this is maybe a virus of some sort? Or didn't know if my computer had been working too hard for the past too days? Either way I have no idea what to do and was wondering if I could get some help! Im on my gf's computer right now and still staring at the aptio setup utility screen.

Trying to fix son's girlfriend's Dell Dimension 4600. We think the hard drive is bad. Put it in a sleeve and hooked it to another computer ... shows no files. So she bought a new WD 160GB hard drive. Installed the new hd after connecting it to another computer and using Disk Management to format it. Then installed it in the Dell 4600. When we start the computer it shows:

Dell System Dimension 4600 Series
BIOS Version A02
www.dell.com

Performing Automatic IDE Configuration ...
Secondary Master: CD ROM Device
Secondary Slave: CD ROM Device

Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for Setup Utility

F1 does nothing but repeat prior line.
F2 brings up the BIOS settings.

Boot sequence only shows:
Diskette Drive
IDE CD ROM Drive

no new HD listed.

I also cannot get it to boot from Windows XP disk even after I change the boot sequence to IDE CD ROM Drive in the first position. Although, yesterday it did attempt to load XP, but ended at a BSOD - Unmountable_boot_volume.

Help. What should my next step be?

Thanks for any and all help.

Ok well the office at my work had the blue screen of death when I came in (left it on) and when I rebooted I got "unmountable_boot_volume" Error. So I think the hard drive had bad volumes... so I put a scsi drive in the pc (with a scsi pci card) and now I get the "strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility error" when i hit F1 is just keeps bring the error up and F2 goes to the bios settings. But there is no way to get past this... I've cleared the bios (ALT+TAB+A, etc) and I jsut can't figure out whats wrong.

Computer: Dell 8250
SCSI drive is 32gb

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility error?

For some reason I just tried hitting F1 again and it seems to boot to the disk media... but the error still comes up... installing a fresh windows copy now.

When I try to activate the HW Setup a message box appears with the message: Gemeinsame Module wurde beendet.
I thought a programm would guide me through the HW Setup as described in the Toshiba Benutzerhandbuch.

What I really wanted to do is:
1. I have to connect a second monitor to my notebook today in the evening.
2. When I hit Fn+F5, my screen gets dark. Hit Fn+F5 again: screen is normally activated.
I expected to see a selection box where I can choose the monitor configuration. (This happened in the past).
3. In order to check my settings I wanted to use HW Setup as described in the Toshiba Benutzerhandbuch.
Result: Look above.
Can you help please?

Answer:Satellite A100 : question about Toshiba HW Setup utility

Hi

I don?t know exactly what is meaning by ?gemeinsame module? but maybe it?s a common module application.
This application is necessary for properly working of different Toshiba tools.
In this case I would recommend reinstalling this application.

My Linx 7 defaults to the Aptio set up utility when I switch on. With no USB key board available I am in difficulty. How to quit this please?

Answer:how to aptio setup utility loop in Windows 10 Linx7

Did your tablet come with Win10 or did you upgrade from Win8? Was it running OK with Win10 or did it never run properly? I think you're going to have to get a USB keyboard.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIR...
