Is it possible to transfer installation to different Windows version?

Question: Is it possible to transfer installation to different Windows version?

Hi there,

I am familiar with transferring an Win 7 OS to different hardware (ie, without doing a clean install)
But is it possible to transfer from say 'Windows 7 Enterprise' to 'Windows 7 Ultimate', both 64 bit.

What I am trying to avoid is having to reinstall a zillion programs, that's the goal!

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Is it possible to transfer installation to different Windows version?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't think there is a upgrade path from Enterprise to Ultimate, but if there is then use Anytime Upgrade.

I was assured that when I updated the current version of Microsoft Professional Pro 2010 (excel, word, Outlook and ACCESS) that all information would be intact and accessible after t he "uninstall- and new install".  The Excel, Word and outlook
are perfect.  However, the Access has been lost in cyber space.  Can this be reclaimed and how can do I get that back.  Need this asap.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks!

installation on my newly built computer and I don't want to do the double installation trick. I tried using these instructions http://blog.chriskankiewicz.com/post/10/windows-7-activation-hack/ . But when I went to make the registry changes I couldn't find "...Setup\OOBE" under the CurrentVersion directory. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm a novice regarding the directory so please be very explicit in your instructions. Or is there another way to do a clean install with Windows 7 upgrade? A lot of the instructions on how to do so on Google are obsolete as Microsoft has fixed some of the loopholes.

Answer:Clean installation of Windows 7 from Upgrade version not Full version

Here is a better tutorial on how to do it:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

The instructions seem the same, but it does include a file that will do the registry edit for you.

Hi,

I have a PC with Windows 7 ultimate installed. I'm planning on purchasing a custom built Pc soon and was wondering whether i am able to transfer my current installation of Windows 7 ultimate to my new PC? I don't have the windows 7 installation disc but it is activated and have the product ID (from the properties windows after right clicking my computer) if it helps.

I would have expected Microsoft to have something that allows this but haven't found one. I've only found an application on Windows 7 called Windows easy transfer, but this only transfers files etc and not the actual Windows 7.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Hi,

First post coming up....

I have created a profile snapshot, using Windows Easy Transfer (WET) on a 32bit XP machine and have placed the resulting file on a network drive.
I then went to my new 64bit W7 pc and downloaded what I believed to be the correct WET version - wet7xp_x64. However, when I ran the executable I received a message "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
I'm running W7 Pro SP1 and have Sophos installed. However Sophos didn't have a problem on the XP machine so don't think it's that.

Any thoughts anyone?

Answer:Windows 7 Easy Transfer installation problem

Hi Andy, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You don't need to install WET on Windows Seven, it's built-in. Just type Easy Transfer on Start Menu > Search field to find it.

I bought a 120 GB Corsair Force 3 SSD to use as my system drive. My current Windows installation is working just fine and I heard there's a way to transfer your current Windows installation to a new drive in a few minutes rather than spending hours and hours re installing each program one by one.

How do I transfer my installation to the new drive to avoid having to re install every program?

Can this be done for free or does it require the purchase of special software?

Thanks

Answer:[SOLVED] How to transfer Windows installation to new drive?

You can clone your whole Hard Drive over to the SSD with Acronis Drive Image. It's not free but works with cloning from a larger drive to a smaller SSD drive which free cloning software doesn't do

Hi,

I have a new laptop with Windows 7. While installing windows 7, the dealer has given the entire 280 odd gb in one drive. In order to have more partitions, i tried reinstalling and installed with 4 partitions.

After that as and when i boot my laptop, i have been popped up with a list of OS, one that i recently installed, and the previous one installed at the tiem of purchase.

I don't want this to popup. by default it has to select the recent installation.

Can any one help me how to do it?

Answer:how to remove old version of windows installation?

Is it your different drive or the partition of the same drive ( HDD )which contains other windows??

If it is your same drive delete all the partitions of it, format the drive and then again install windows in one drive in which you want after creating partitions.

This is the simple way if you don't want Dual boot.

Just tried to install Version 15063 on my main machine and it failed.
It got to 88% of the installation when the spinning circles stopped like the machine locked up.
I left it for 20 minutes before giving up & hard rebooting.
It did a repair to my previous version thankfully and it came up with this error.
0xC1900101 - 0x4000D "The installation failed in Second Boot phase with an error during Migrate Data operation.
Uninstalled my antivirus, removed all non essential USB devices had another go and it still failed at the same point with the same error. Any ideas what to try next?

Described here. I have a problem with finishing work on "unknown device". For a moment, after installing from the DELL (www.dell.com/.../advanced) driver "ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver ", file DRVR_WIN_R309372.EXE Device Manager has stopped showing that there is an" unknown device "in the configuration. After updating to "ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver", the Chipset_Driver_RCHTX_WN_2.00.10.34_A11.EXE file, from the same DELL page, again appeared in the configuration unknown device.
I decided to remove the ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver from the system via the Control Panel to install only DRVR_WIN_R309372.EXE. Unfortunately, the installation can not be resumed, the message "Found incompatible installation of, Version. Please uninstall it via Control Panel Add / Remove Programs before installing this version of Accelerometer". The problem is that Control Panel no longer shows this application. Suspecting that there were some traces left after the previous installation, I tried to remove them from the File Manager and also edited the registry. In the registry I searched for: "R309372", "RCHTX", "Microelectronics", "AccelerometerP11", "Freefall". I deleted the entries containing the above characters. I would be grateful for directional guidance on how to proceed further. I am using Windows 10 64 bit Dell Precision M4500.

Can I do that in some simple way or do I have to prepare a boot disc or use Acronis for a boot image or what? And will MS acept that after 31st Jan?

Answer:W8 transfer to SSD using update version

Use a migration program to transfer the whole image accross. There are several around, just Google "ssd migration".

Hi!

Scenario:
Let's suppose that I have a program running on PC: A, I lost the installer package, I want to run the program on PC: B, with all the settings and registry keys as if I installed it from the installer package.
Can we do this?

I was thinking that if device driver files are able to be moved successfully (You know, DriverGenius, DriverMax, and other apps that allow us to take all our installed driver files and transfer them to other machines without the need for the installer package), then why wouldn't this be right for apps too?

:confused

Answer:Trying to transfer non-portable version of an application

Scenario:

Let's suppose that this program is freeware - then you can simply re-download it from the internet on to another computer.

Let's suppose it is shareware - one license, one computer.

MajorGeeks.com will not assist in the piracy of software. If this is not applicable to your situation, give further details - like the program name itself.

Up front: this is just a hypothetical question. It came up in a discussion about Windows licenses.

A Windows full retail version can be transferred to another PC, which is not the case with an OEM version.
Imagine the 'old' PC is damaged, fire, water, whatever, but I am still having the full retail version media and key.

Reason for asking here is that I believe(!) that the key on the old PC should first be deactivated, before Windows can be reinstalled(?)
If that is indeed the case, how to proceed in case of a damaged PC?
Or are the hardware details of the old PC (on the activation server) simply be overwritten once Windows is activated on a new PC?

If I do a normal copy paste it just replaces everything regardless of which one is the latest version.Do I need a seperate software package for that or does vist have such a function?

Version 1.2 I have been told by Kodak is the "Granddaddy" of the picture transfer software. I found difficulty trying to load it on my newer computer. I tried to download Quicktime 4, then I tried to download the newer version, got so confused as the the reason nothing worked, not the old nor the new Kodak Easyshare program, that I decided to delete all KODAK from my computer, but some don't delete. NOW my dock doesn't load. (of course I deleted the program) I cannot open the old software, nor the new version. I have downloaded drivers to my download file, but don't think they are in the right file and need to be moved maybe to a drivers file? I tried to run my original Kodak Picture Software disk but it won't run. I'm in big trouble. I need my dock to work, and for the software to open up so I can work my photos. I tried downloading Kodak Transfer Software drivers from several sites, but no luck with the program working. Does anyone know to what website I should go to find the programs I need to work with my dock for a digital camera DX3500? Help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Kodak Picture Transfer Software Version 1.2

Hello Roslyn, and welcome to BC.Sorry to hear about your camera dock problems.Kodak software is notoriously buggy, and I feel should be avoided at all cost.Did you delete the Kodak software, or did you use Add/Remove Programs, in the Windows Control Panel? For deleting the files that won't delete, you can try one of these free programs:UnlockerDelete DoctorSorry I can't help you with the dock problem, but I have a couple of alternative options you may be able to use, if the above doesn't help, or in case someone can't come up with a solution to your problem.Did your camera come with a USB transfer cable?Do your computer have an internal, or external card reader? If so, you should be able to transfer your images, using one of those methods. Also, in case you're interested, here's an alternative to the official Quicktime:QuickTime Alternative 3.2.2

My mother has a Samsung NP-R519, OEM version of windows Vista. Now the HD is a lot louder and won't last much longer.I've rooted around my house and found a 250GB replacement that is new and has Ubuntu on it. I'm willing to format the drive and give it her as a replacement. The current HD has a 13GB recovery partition, (C) is 110GB with 65GB free and the (D) partition is 110GB and is empty. So how do I transfer the recovery partition and (C) partition to the new hard drive? Her HD is NTFS so should I format the new drive to NTFS?I also have a 2TB external drive maybe I could use that?Does the replacement HD need to be same name as old HD? I'm upgrading to a new ASUS motherboard, new chipset (x79 to x99) and a new processor. I'm going to try to run my current Windows 10 installation (a retail copy - not OEM) without reinstalling from scratch.

On the previous install (after backing everything up) I removed as many of the old system drivers as made sense (USB3, graphics, etc..) and deactivated any software that needed that. I'm close to ready to see what happens. If it all fails then I'll just reinstall from scratch - which I'll do anyway on some rainy day. I'm just interested in seeing how well Windows 10 will cope with such a change of hardware - though it's still an ASUS Deluxe board, a recent Intel Chipset, and a fairly recent processor.

BUT - HERE'S THE QUESTION: When one makes such a major hardware change Windows10 will certainly complain and require reactivation. But is there any grace period??

I'm hoping I might have a couple of days to confirm that everything works properly before having to call Microsoft. If there's a serious hardware issue then I would have to revert back to my old hardware until any problems are resolved.

Does anyone here know what will likely happen? I'm just concerned that I might be stuck with a computer that's locked until reactivated and then find that there's a serious problem with the new system.

Answer:Transfer installation to new hardware

Windows 10 will de-activate on the first boot on the new hardware. The only thing you will lose is some of the personalization settings customization and you will start getting nag screens to activate Windows 10.

Hello,

I have a win7 x64 installation running on an ASUS P5KC, q6600 oc'd to 3.5GHZ on water.
The mainboards screams under load (not CPU load, rather it seems worse under memory intensive tasks) so I'm going to try replacing it with a Gigabyte board I have GA-P35_DS3P.

Anyway, I have 3 36GB raptors in software raid that I install most of my programs on, is windows going to be able to rebuild this array from the drive ID's when a new m/b is installed or ... not?

Answer:Transfer software RAID to new installation?

I haven't tested it myself, but from what I understand if you set it up the RAID array through Windows you should have zero problems migrating it to another installation.

My machine won't boot up unless I disconnect all of the Hard Drives. I still have my two SSD's (RAID 1) that have Windows 7 Professional installed still running fine.

I had one hard drive ST4000NM0023 (4TB) fail (had four of them), and so I replaced two of them with ST10000NM0096 (10TB) drives.

I had software backing up the failed drive, which was my D: (Documents & Program Files) drive. The backup drive F: (D Backup) has now been renamed my D: Drive, and I transferred all of it's files to a new F: backup drive.

I had to copy & paste everything from one folder over to another one of the same name because Windows 7 had automatically installed new folders with the proper icons on them (as per attached image). I had two of "My Pictures", "My Documents", etc.., with one having an icon and one not.

It seems like I had to move my files to the new folders or else my other programs couldn't seem to find the files they needed even though the the folders had the same name, minus the icon.

Copying files from folder to folder was very time consuming, and used all of the systems memory. I would successfully reboot the system after each successful transfer so I could restore the RAM back to 64GB.

I left the largest folder "My Documents" till last. After I successfully transferred the files in this folder over to the new "My Documents" folder with the icon on it, I tried rebooting the system and it would not work. I ... Read more

If this is a program; I would first download, install, and run the free edition of revo uninstaller; which should completely uninstall ALL of the program you are trying to install; including registry entries, etc. and then reboot; which will clear the system resources, etc. then try and install it again. I really don't want to remove all my files and programs to reinstall Pro so they don't get wiped. Welcome Pauljay to the windows forums.

If you have installed the ultimate version and you then go to MS and pay for the ultimate version, all you should have to do is to enter the code into your registration and it should then validate and you should be ok. Otherwise, I believe that you better copy all the data and anything else you want to save to an external device and then do a boot of the dvd and delete the existing partitions and then reformat and install the correct version.
Calling microsoft might help as they will be glad to sell you the ultimate version but I think that the PRO version is probably more than most people would need.

Hey guys I have an 80gig and it is crashing, I reparied it and have it going for now, I bought the new Hitachi 7200rpm 200gig to install and right now I have it in an external case so I can hook it up to USB.  I understand that I can make a set of recovery disk and install the new hard drive and then run them.  But I do NOT understand if it will just install the recovery partition and windows and then I have to reinstall all my sofware.  I am on international travel and don't have the ability to reinstall everyhting.  Will the recovery disk reinstall my software applications and software or just what the system came with new.  I hear of IBM system migration software which transfers files and settings, so maybe thats what I need, but I can't find enough info on it to know for sure. I would just like to hear it from somene that has moved over everything from one hard drive to another.  If I could reinstall the software there wouldn't be any problems, but I need to have all my data transferred including the software programs without any re-installation.  Thanks  DK

Hi,

When I try to install the Sims 2 once it reaches 59%, an error message pops up saying, "A problem occured when trying to transfer the file 'TSDATA\Res\Sims3D\Sims12.package' from the media." I don't know what to do because the only options I get are, "Retry" and "Cancel". The strange thing is, I explored into the disk and I found the file in Disk 3 in a .zip file. What is happening? Hi!

My last problem was solved and everything works fine now. I need the documents and emails from the old computer. I have it on my external and made a copy to my root C drive.

The problem is that I used Windows file transfer 7 and I want the files back to my Vista computer that I reinstalled. When I use Windows file transfer I get an error message that says I should choose a valid file.

What can I do?

Answer:Windows file transfer doesn't transfer back

I have setup a shared drive so I can access my files with my Android devices but the transfer speed is very slow around 500 KB - 1.5 MB per second. My QNAP NAS that also using SMB is transfering very fast up to 12 MB/s. Can i increase transfer speed of SMB?

Answer:Increase transfer speed of windows file transfer (SMB)

Android smb shares are always slow.

I use Fast File Transfer which when in wifi direct mode gets up to 5 MB/s but have never managed to get more. This uses http protocol rather than smb.

Fast file transfer app is in google playstore and easy to use. Nothing is needed on pc side - all done from a browser.

In the end, usb tethering is quickest way.

Hi,
I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the soft provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista, but not the opposite. Is there a solution or must I go back to my retailer? Those unfinished Microsoft's products really annoy me.
Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?
Thanks.

Answer:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

The operating system is Microsoft Windows XP Professional, version 2002 and Service Pack 2.

I changed over to the paid AVG Internet Security 8.0 build 93 (5/5/2008) from the free AVG 7.5. I have received my new license number via internet, and downloaded the software to my Desktop. AVG 7.5 was uninstalled as well as all the other anti-virus/security product on my computer. To my knowledge, there is nothing of the above products left on the PC.

When I try to install AVG 8.0, the following keeps coming up “Another anti-virus/security product is currently installed on this computer….. Please remove it before installing AVG 8.0” I really cannot find any thing else on the PC. In the end I ignored the above warning and carried on with the installation. The next notice came up “INSTALLATION FAILED! 1 error and 11 warnings occurred”. It do not allow me to complete the installation.

I have notified AVG Technical Support twice about this problem but up to now they did not reply to my query.

I do not have any anti-virus protection since 24th May 2008.

Please can somebody help me?
Hanre

Answer:AVG 8.0 paid version - Installation Problem

Put the names of your previous security programs one by one into Start>Search>Files and folders. This should bring up any remnants of them.

I do this every time I remove a program regardless of the porocedure.

I just installed "eight" with no trouble. Actually it found "7.5" on my system and removed it automatically during the installation.

Good Day,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop w/XP. The NVIDA Driver Date is 1/10/2003. The Driver Version is 4.2.5.8.

I am told that this Driver should be updated/upgraded to this>Version: 61.77
Release Date: July 27, 2004. The web site is>http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77.

My first question, is the person (RealOne Arcade) correct that I should install this Version 61.77 because the Version 4.2.5.8 is old?

My second question, please give me step by step instructions on how to do this as I attempted and came very close to a mess. My log on screen alone (never was able to get past that) was gray w/a thin 1/4 inch green line from left to right. I ended-up having to come up in safe mode and install R58746.EXE which fortunately was in My Documents.

The NVIDIA Driver Installation Hints state:

"Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

This is what I did that came very close to a mess. I went into Add/Remove and uninstalled the NVIDIA Display Drivers. I then installed t... Read more

and . I feel I *should* know this. I have an older Dell E521 PC that came with Dell's bluetooth
keyboard, mouse and Setpoint software. Worked great until the bluetooth dongle died. Since I didn't have time (or money) to get another dongle, I
hooked up a Logitch MKZ260 (wireless mouse/keyboard/speaker combo; same as MK260 except it comes with speakers. ). It's not bluetooth but is wireless - Appears to be RF (2.4ghz). Installation instructions said it uses the standard Windows 7 drivers which it does seem to have installed. However, as far as I can see, I no longer have any way to monitor the battery life or mouse & keyboard settings etc. When I click on the Setpoint mouse/keyboard icon in systray it pops up with the old DELL Setpoint but no longer states the condition of the battery, nor does it show any devices. The device tabs aren't even there. Battery status doesn't even show in Device Manager or Control Panel's Devices. Not sure what to do.

I'm hesitant to uninstall Dell's (bluetooth) setpoint since I've no way to re-install it, AFAIK. (System originally came with Vista 64bit. I have upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) I can see Logitech has several downloadable versions of Setpoint available on their site. Not sure which, if any, are compatible with MKZ260. The original documentation for the mouse/keyboard combo indicated it uses the Microsoft native drivers, but no mention about Setpoint. Should I uninstall Dell Setpoint, d/l one of Logitech's and try ... Read more

Answer:SetPoint Problem - installation of new version ?

TealMama, welcome to the Seven Forums.

As far as the Dell version of Setpoint goes they do have the Vista version available,

Drivers and Downloads

which if all the original keyboard and mouse combo was just a Dell rebrand of the Logitech original (sort of like how most "Dell" printers are nothing more than Dell branded Lexmark's) and they didn't do anything funny to the installer or device IDs, then if/when you get a new bluetooth dongle you should be able to just use the latest version of Setpoint directly from Logitech.

As far as he combo you are using now, from what I can see it won't make any use of Setpoint at all seeing as Logitech never even made any software/drivers for it,

Music Combo MKZ260

Quote:
Download Instructions

This product does not ship with software. It uses the native USB drivers already present in your operating system.

for XP, never mind Windows 7. With that said and seeing as you can replace Setpoint if needed, I would uninstall it as it isn't serving any purpose at the moment. As far as the bluetooth services, up to you but without anything using them they will just be idle.

Hi,

So I download it, and during the installation of this version (TEMPRO_2.0.3.exe), an error message says the installation abort due to error.
If I click on icon of Tempro already installed, I've got the error 1721.
What's happens ?
Now tempro doesn't work no more...

I don?t know why this happened but in your case I would try to remove the complete old version of TEMRPO. Check the control panel > Add/Remove programs and remove it. Restart the notebook and then install the new version of TEMPRO.

I hope it works and give us a feedback. :)

I have upgraded my OS to Windows 10 which has DirectX version 12.

After upgrading, I installed GTA4 game in it. Now directx version changed to 10.1.

How can I get directX 12 back?

Thanks

Answer:DirectX version downgraded to 10.2 after game installation

You still have DX12. GTA IV only uses up to DX10.1 though.

If you want to check your DX version, open start and type dxdiag, then launch the program that pops up. Keep in mind that DirectX Feature Levels could be lower than 12 based on what video card you have.

A warning, these questions are far below most of what I have seen on here. I recently bought Radeon 9250...i uninstalled my old voodoo 5 (i know) and hooked it into my first PCI slot. I then (following ATI's instructions) hooked everything back up, including the monitor to the new video card. The screen ended up blank, and the monitor obviously was not recognized. I hooked the monitor up to the built-in motherboard graphics chip, and the screen came up and told me to install the drivers, new hardware found...yadda yadda. Had problems with that installation...not sure why...although when i check the device manager it says the card is functioning properly. Not sure what to do next...when i hooked it up...there was a bundle of cords with a plastic clip on the end (told you i suck) whcih was plugged into the voodoo chip, but there is no place to put it on the new chip. I don't know if that's the power source or what...or if I need new cords or a new motherboard or just some good advice...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
My Dell laptop purchased few years back has unregistered version of Microsoft Windows 7 Pro. Considering replacement with licensed version I purchased online. Through online link provided by seller I could download registered version.

My queries are :-
1. Can some Expert provide step by step method for replacement ?  Is it necessary to uninstall old version before installation of licensed version ?

2. Purchased software download presently is on laptop. On start clicking my computer asks for CD burning. Considering 3.1 GB size I tried different discs Sony, Maxell but process aborts. Error message is that speeds do not match.

Is it at all advantageous & necessary to retain purchased software in CD form ? If so how to proceed with CD burning ?

Can Microsoft Windows Pro software be retained on laptop & also on portable drive ? This protection just in case laptop crashes.
Kindly advise.

welcome to the community.

if you have access to an external optical drive, you might want to try to use the bootable iso update method. there's a link to it about half way down the page you linked. personally, it's the only way i perform bios updates.

all that said, is there a specific issue you're trying to resolve with this update? again, personally, i'm pretty cautious with bios updates. definitely in the "if it's not broken..." camp on this.

if you need further info on the alternate update method, please post back.

So I done a manual upgrade to the Creators Update a few days ago but appear to have a corrupted user profile/s and possibly even a corrupted upgrade installation.

I'm not sure what to do, I could transfer user files to a new user profile but it may be more trouble than it's worth and I suspect the Windows installation may be corrupted also so could be pointless.

I could clean install version 1703, but is it deemed stable enough? I could also roll the update back or restore the 1603 system image I took before hand. Recommendations? These issues really give me a headache!

Answer:Is version 1703 stable enough for clean installation?

Since the outcome may depend on your system's configuration, here's an option:

1. Use Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot disk + external storage for disk images to image your present system.

2. Try a clean install and see what happens.

3. If you don't like it, restore whichever of your images you prefer.

Otherwise, simply restore 1607, and if you have Pro, defer upgrades, and wait a few months for the dust to settle, and try upgrading again with whatever updates have appeared by then.

Recently I have noticed a third party application we are using in our company has not been working properly on certain computers.  I contacted the vendor for support, and they said I should check if My Computer under Control Panel-->Administrative
Tools-->Component Services--> Computers has a red line through it.  On all the computers where the app is not working, this line appears indicating that there is a problem with Component Services.
Doing some further research on the internet, I have found several posts that indicate that if a computer was setup using Easy Transfer, that this leads to a "broken" Component Services.
And indeed---every one of the computers with a broken Component Services was one that had been setup for a new user by using Easy Transfer.  The issue with Component Services does not appear on computers that were a "clean" install.
So--I know my third-party app is not working properly because of a problem in COM+.  There is info to indicate that using Easy Transfer somehow "breaks" Component Services---but no one seems to know how it does this.  There is also no clear advice

Answer:Component Services (COM+) re-installation or repair: using Easy Transfer to setup a new pc breaks COM+????

Windows Easy Transfer helps you transfer your files, email, pictures and settings when moving to a new PC; Component Services are system components that cannot be transferred by means of Windows Easy Transfer.
You could try using the Windows 7 Recovery feature to perform a sort of "in place re-installation" of Windows 7 that could repair COM+: go to Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Recovery and click the "Advanced recovery methods" link and click
the "Reinstall Windows" option and insert the Windows 7 installation disc.

Hello,

I was trying to install a CAT application (MemoQ) when the process got interrupted during the installation of .net framework client profile, version 4. I found out that this version is no longer supported, but I'm not sure if this is the issue, since I broke off the installation during the first time. Also, I used a cleanup tool, but to no avail.
As for RegEdit, the versions for Net Framework Setup that came with my Windows 7 version (installed it last December) are v2.05727, v3.0 and v3.5, so I'm well behind.
Do I need to clean out any files from the failed installation, and then move on to installing the proper version (which one? for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit)?

Many thanks,

Gerben

P.S. I tried copy-pasting the analysis from the MGDAT, but that doesn't work, sorry.

Hi,

I've come to the decision of installing vista on my M400. I upgraded my BIOS to 3.40. However, I really want the silent fan so I was wondering if it was possible to run Vista under BIOS v1.80 and if so, if it would impact performance in anyway.

Answer:Portege M400 - Vista installation under 1.80 BIOS version

As far as I know Portege M400 (PPM40) is Vista supported but I really do not know what will happen with cooling fan and noises. Test it simply. If you do not like Vista you can install recovery image anytime again.

My computer was in sleep mode, but when I went back to it several hours later, it was turned off. I'm not sure if there was a power interruption or some1 hit the button on the tower or whatever. Anyway, when I tried to reboot it, it loaded the BIOS and then I got the dreaded BSOD -- it's just a black screen w/ a flashing cursor.

So I pulled out my Win7 installation CD (which is what I used to install Win7 on this computer) and tried to repair the installation. It tells me that the version on the disc is not the same as the version on the computer!

Is there anything else I can do besides reinstalling Windows and therefore all of my other programs?

Answer:Solved: Win7 won't boot, installation CD says it's not correct version

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop, Windows 7-64bit.
My WMP11 does the following:
1. It clones music titles...even in front of my eyes.
2. Music files disappear.
3. Titles are now assuming wrong names even though content remains.
4. My music files come from my Music Library. Those have not changed or cloned..

5. I deleted WMP11 and re-installed...but all the above errors returned.
6. My Library files are skewed. Music is mixed with Video and with Documents and all around. Why? I dunno.
7. My music library is around 25GB; but it changes with the losses mentioned in #2 above.
8. I tried RealPlayer but their format leaves a lot to be desired by me. Also, it keeps requiring Flashplayer and no matter how many time I download it, it asks for it again.
9. I am 80 years old, not very computer savvy and I'm blessed with Parkinsons. Music is my hobby.
10. HELP.....PLEASE!

I have ugraded to version 1607 and I notice the restart time is 2.5 longer than version 1511. The boot time is about the same on both versions. I also did a clean install of version 1607 and the restart time was still about 2.5 times as long as version 1511.
What is going on with version 1607?

Answer:Why does Windows 10 Version 1607 take about 2.5 times as long to restart as Version 1511 does?

What is going on with version 1607? you've checked startup programs? Any that are on by default?

I am running an "Anytime Upgrade" version of Windows 7 Professional. I have since discovered that sysprep does not function (or is disabled) on "Anytime Upgrade" versions of Windows 7. In other words, if I had purchased a physical
copy of Windows 7 professional then sysprep would be available. Since I did not, sysprep is not available.

Question: If I purchased a full retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate and upgraded my current version of Windows 7 Professional using that DVD could I then regain a working sysprep feature on my laptop?

Thank you in advance. I would upgrade to Windows 10, but my graphics card is not supported by Windows 10. I receive an error from Windows 10 Upgrade .... "Windows 10 is not compatible with your graphics card".

Any workarounds or advice would be appreciated.

I installed a Japanese version of windows 10 but then bought an English version and installed that after finding all the menus could not be changed to English during the install.
My question is does the English version overwrite the JP version or are files left on the SSD using up space?
Also in the end I returned the English version cause I found you can add a language pack to the JP version. The problem with this is that if you get a blue screen the Windows messages are in Japanese. So now unless I can change this I'm going to go back to an English version of Windows 10.
Thanks.

I have Win7 HP x64 on my computer and I just found out that an upgrade download version of Enterprise is offered free through my job. I have read through threads dating back to early 2012 that say that upgrading from HP to Enterprise is not possible because Enterprise has a different license key. I have a few questions.

1) Is this upgrade version of Enterprise meant to be an upgrade from XP Enterprise, or is there now a way to upgrade from an existing w7 version?

2) When upgrade version are offered to employees through a job like this, are employees required to get a key from the software admins, and does this also apply to downloaded version? There was no mention of a key on the download page.

3) Can a w7 HP to Enterprise upgrade exist or would I have to do a clean install of the Enterprise using the upgrade image/disk?

Thanks.

Answer:Enterprise Upgrade version offered through work. Installation Question

I am using windows 7 64 bit and after reformattin my computer,i drag my files from my external hard disk into my laptop.the error stated make sure i am using 32 or 64 bit and i am using that.how do i solve this?

Answer:The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are runnin

Hi Haruki92,

What files are you trying to transfer? Regular files (documents, photos etc) should be fine to just drag over. However some applications are not able to run in a 64-bit environment.

Please post exactly what you're transferring and a screenshot if possible.

I just came to the realization that a computer of mine is 64bit even though it has been running the 32bit version of Windows 7.  This came about when some curiosity lead me to the manufacturer's website seeking to learn some specific details about the
computer.  Interestingly there is a statement which says something to the effect that this particular computer was not intended for use with the 32bit version of Windows.  This causes me to assume that it was sold with the 64bit version installed
which was changed after market.  I have no idea how this might have happened insofar as I obtained the computer from a friend who was discarding it.  This friend isn't someone who would know about such things.  I did reinstall the 32bit version
of Windows when I added an SSD drive but did this thinking it was a 32bit computer because it was running the 32bit version of Windows.
While the 32bit version is working fine, I am dependent on some software where support for 32bit has been abandoned.  I'd also like to add more memory and learned that while the computer can support up to 16GB it. apparently, won't use more than 4GB
when running the 32bit version of Windows.
I have quite a bit of work invested in building out the computer with the software I'm using and it would be nice if I didn't have to redo that to upgrade it to 64bit, which is what leads to my question.

Update for Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems won't install.

I have tried the FixIt tool on Microsoft and all the other suggestion on their site and I'm still not able to install. Also, my display driver times out and causes my computer to go to the blue screen and I think this may be due to the driver not being updated.

After spending several hours trying all of the recommended steps to install Dragon's version of C++ Runtime ver. 9 that I had seen in this and other forums, I was finally able to get past the installation failed message.

This may not be the solution that resolves your particular issue, but I was trying to install Dragon Medical version 10.1 to a clean windows 7 pc without any previous versions of Dragon installed. I kept receiving the error "The installation of visual C++ runtime version 9.0 for dragon naturally speaking has failed"

During the process of troubleshooting, I had uninstalled all other versions of C++ Runtime but could not get past the error until I went to the event logs which pointed to the installation log (C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Temp\vcruntime9.log) which had to be opened by accessing the cmd window as an admin (google "open cmd as admin windows 7").

The log file gave details and showed the file that was actually being called during the installation process for C++ Runtime which is "vcruntime.exe". In the version 10.1 DVD, the file is located in the "ISSetupPrerequisites" folder. Once I ran the vcruntime.exe as an admin by itself, I was then able to run the regular setup.exe and Dragon installed successfully.

So I have no idea what was actually causing the error, but running the C++ Runtime program as an admin before attempting the actual Dragon install solved the issue. I hope this simple so... Read more

In the past I have used the Transfer My Data App to backup my SMS text messages and MMS to my SD card and then was able to restore them the same way after wiping my phone or switching phones. At some point they updated the App and removed this functionality so it now only works over Bluetooth. I'm actually trying to switch between two Lumia 640s so Bluetooth would be fine but its only transferring less than half of my messages. I also tried "contacts+message backup" which apparently is an old WP8 settings app but it crashes most of the time and got even less of my messages.
Is it possible to sideload an old version of store apps to these phones? I know there's the option in the settings to allow Sideloading. And if it is possible how do I go about it all.
Another avenue I'm exploring is switching to a Samsung Galaxy Express 3 my friend gave me. Is there an app for android that can bring our text messages over? AT&T Mobile Transfer doesn't support Text messages from Windows Phones it seems.

Answer:Any way to get the old version of "Transfer My Data" w/SD Card support?

I am using Lumia 1520 and the only way to transfer the data is by the Bluetooth or by backup ur phone to the one drive by settings-back-more options then tap on back up now... wish that helpfull

I'm trying to install some applications on a Lenovo ideapad with windows 7 home premium, 64-bit, SP1. I'm getting the following error - "The version of this file is not compatible with the the version of windows you're running." I've installed all of these specific applications (e.g. RealPlayer, Logmein, Windows 2007 Compatibility Pck File Format Converter) and many other 32-bit apps on other Windows 7 64-bit machines, including 2 other Lenovo laptops with the exact same specs, purchased at the same time, with absolutely no issue.

I thought maybe it was some kind of virus so I reformattted the laptop and I'm still getting the same issue. It's VERY frustrating. I've searched everywhere and don't see any answers. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or how to correct it?

I have a bunch of OS backups using ghost and I can use ghost explorer to view the image files. Unfortunately I didn't make details on what OS version was installed at the time, just dates the images were taken.

How can I find if these images were from Vista or Windows 7 by just looking at the contents of the image, without actually restoring the image?

Answer:How to identify Windows version by file version?

did you install IE8 on your Vista install?
otherwise it comes default with IE7, and Win7 comes with IE8.

so you could use the file version of iexplore.exe, if you left IE7 on the Vista install.

possibly bootmgr file might be different file versions.

Alright, I thought I had the process nailed down, but I'm not having much luck.

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit version coming tomorrow. It comes with 4GB of RAM and Windows 7 seems like the first OS that has wide support for the 64 bit version, please correct me if I'm wrong. So I thought I'd upgrade to 64 bit since everyone tells me I can do so, legally, for free, with the key on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

So I planned to download the ISO via Bit Torrent and check the hash, as somebody recommended. I installed MD5Summer.

But I'm stuck because I can't seem to find the Hash Checksums for W7 HP 64. Can anybody provide me a link to them on MS's site, or similar?

Anybody got a good BT link to save me from searching myself? I didn't see any that looked like the right version on Demonoid. What should my search term be? "Windows 7 OEM 64"?

I've never installed Windows 7, does the procedure differ from XP? I've installed XP hundreds of times.

What's the best way to verify performance of my new laptop? Free benchmarking program? Website with common benchmarks? I'd like to see if the OS upgrade actually benefits the benchmarks.

Any and all advice is appreciated.
