Windows 7 wont boot without external hard drive turned on?

Question: Windows 7 wont boot without external hard drive turned on?

I just restarted my PC and i kept getting erros regarding hardware, at first it would just hold at updating dmi pool , after i reset the bios to fail safe defaults it would then give me the I/O error. I noticed my external drive was turned off and I turned it on and windows booted fine. Is there a connection here i can disable?

Windows is installed on my SSD drive not my external.

thanks

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 wont boot without external hard drive turned on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 7 wont boot without external hard drive turned on?

I have an Asus M5 A97 that boots and does everything fine as long as I don't have an external drive attached to it. (It will work with little USB drives in but, not not the WD 1.5 TB).

I read another thread on this forum that suggested it was a case problem. Unfortunately the discussion had no conclusion/resolution so I don't know how the problem was resolved or if it was resolved. And normal Google searches were unhelpful. Asus' self guided diagnostic was not helpful either.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this.

System boots to the point of entering the BIOS. So I get a screen that instructs me to push "delete Key" to enter BIOS and it doesn't work. The machine just hangs there. Unhook the external and no problem.

Thanks for your consideration

Hey everyone,
Well last night I was just enjoying my new computer when the power went off in my house for a second, the power immediately came back on and then.... of course, the same thing happened. No lightning, not even any clouds.
My computer is connected to a brand new (about a week old) cyber power surge protector so I figured everything was ok, when I tried to boot my compuer up again it went trough all of its tests and then a black screen....... I left it for about 10 minutes until I got frusterated and turned it off. I was able to boot up in safe mode but it took forever. I tried a system restore (why not) and then when I restarted I had to wait at the black screen for about 5 minutes and then it booted up.
I have to go through this everytime now and sometimes I have a problem shutting down.
Once everything boots up everything in windows works fine eccept it wont recognize my external hard drive. I can hear that the computer sees it but it wont come up!?!
Do you think that it is a hardware issue now or is it the mobo, or something else? I just dont know! It is wierd that windows still functions fine once it is up....
Could anyone PLESE give me any advice on the situation! Im not exactly an expert when it comes to this so I am completely lost

Thank you!

Well heres the deal, I have a WD200JB internal hard drive that I've recently put into an external case to run. The problem is i've only been able to register it for 31GB when its supposed to be 200GB, I'm running XP I've got the newest SP and updates all around, even when i use the Data Lifeguard that came with the hard drive it doesn't pick up on it being more then 31GB. What's the deal on that? Thats about all I can say for now i'm quiet bewildered on what to do, I know computers all around but i'm just new to the external hard drive scene.
Any Help Thanks.

i was sick of auto play running when i plugged in my external drive, so i turned it off, then when i went to access the drive, it was missing from 'my computer'.

i went to computer management, and it shows that it is there, but is not initialized.i tried initializing it, but nothing happened.

device manager says it is working fine- it picks up the disk and security, but does not recognise it as a mass storage device.

what the heck happened, ive never came acrossthis before. the drive is full of stuff i need.

its a 300GB Maxtor one touch II.

EDIT:

Now in computer management it says the disk is online, but the 279GB is not allocated.

My only option in computer management is to create a new partition. Im afraid to create the partition in case i lose everything, dammit, how did this happen!

My laptop just recently had the mobo fried, and I managed to salvage the hard drive. I bought an external enclosure and plugged it into another laptop to get the information I wanted off of it (music, etc). However, access is restricted to the hard drive. How can I access it?

I have a nearly new portable external hard drive which is organized into 30 or 40 folders, each with further files in it. The names of the folders on this hard drive have turned to gibberish and I have no idea how to fix this problem. Here is a screen cap showing the problem:
For what it's worth the folder names are also gibberish when I view them from a command prompt. And here's what happens if I click on one of the folders to see what's in it:

I've tried running Avast and MalwareBytes scans but they don't find anything wrong.

Is there anything I can do to repair my folder names and access the files once again?

I've only had the external hard drive a few weeks.

Answer:The folder names on my external hard drive have turned to gibberish

Something has corrupted the FATs.

Try and recover files to another drive using recuva

Hi

I have been having this problem for about a year now, I usually turn my external HD off (built my own with a WD hard drive and antec external case)

It will not show up after turning it on unless i reboot windows, I have gone into device manager and searched for new hardware but rarely that ever works.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Thanks!

I have a problem that I can't seem to fix; my external (USB) HDD has first level root directory that turns into an executable file whenever I plug in my hdd. The icon still shows as a folder but it type is "application". What it does is it hides the original folders that actually have my files in, then makes a copy of the same folders except it's now an exe file rather than a folder. When I double click on it to open it, it takes about 8 seconds an then it opens in a new window - but it opened to the right (hidden) folder. Inside these hidden folders, everything looks alright.
I can delete these exe files and go and unhide the other folders and I'm good again till next time I plug in my hdd.
I plugged in my other (backup) external USB hdd, and it did the exact same thing. But on my C Drive everything looks good and right.
I did run an AVG scan which yielded some stuff and I removed those but it still keeps doing the same thing.
Any ideas to what causes this and how I can fix this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I have an Acer Revo and installed my free Windows 7 upgrade disc one week ago with an external DVD drive. The install went swimmingly and no problems were apparent.

I removed my Samsung external DVD drive when finished and all was well. However, when I turned on the Revo the next day, Windows 7 would only get as far as the splash screen and then hung with a blank screen.

If I space bar, the cursor works, I get a blue windows screen (at a diff aspect ratio to the screen) and right click works which gives me some options (but nothing that allows me to kick start the process). There are no user options and no desktop items. I have checked that view is set correctly etc.

I have tried Ctrl Alt Del which just kills the blue screen and mouse/cursor movement.

My only option at this point is to hard shutdown.

HOWEVER, if I plug in the external DVD drive, it will boot normally and work fine.

I have entered te BIOS and changed the order of boot, to no avail.

It will also revert to this dormant screen if it goes into sleep mode.

My work around has been to set sleep to NEVER and keep the external plugged in, but that defeats the object of buying the REVO.

I have searched the internet for a solution, but so far, no luck.

I tried updating the NVIDIA driver but that would not install properly.

Any ideas anyone? Please???

I have Windows Advance server 2000 running on my P3, but what made you want to put it on your laptop?
Anyway Windows Server OS's dont have the similar drivers and applications running as XP or Vista..... but you can try plugging the Ex Hard drive and then reboot the laptop to get it recognized.

Does the Ex Harddrive have 2 Usb that plug in without AC power or does it have just 1 usb and additional power that comes from the outlet?

I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop with Windows 8 on it. I have an external hard drive from a Windows 7 desktop. It recognizes the external hdd right away and I can access it but I can't figure out how to boot Windows 7 as the primary. I've tried changing boot order in bios but I've had no luck as it still boots Windows 8 first. Is there a way to use the Windows 7 as the primary drive or could someone teach me about dual booting? Even a way to temporarly turn off the Windows 8 hard drive will work. I just need to access the Windows 7 hard drive without having to navigate through program files to have to open something. Any ideas?

How can I Boot Windows from my external Hard drive?

What do I need to do? And how do I tell my PC to then boot Windows from the external hard drive, and not the internal one?

Thank you

Answer:How can I Boot Windows from my external Hard drive?

You would need to transfer the files from your internal hardrive onto the external one, then when you computer boots enter the BIOS ushally F2 or something... it's different on differnet machines. Then when your in you will need to tell it to boot from the external one. If it's a USB external hardrive then you may have to enable USB Device Support or something... As I said it's different on every machine. But thats some basic steps.

I dissembled a hard drive from an old laptop and uses it as an external hard drive for my new laptop. Here is my question: how do I boot (Windows Vista is installed in the old drive) from this external hard drive from my new laptop (Windows 8 is installed in the new laptop) ? I have not done anything to the old hard drive, so the old system drive is still there.I have tried to change the boot priority in CMOS but it said the external drive has no system drive. So, I don't know what seem to be the problem. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue ?Thanks in advance.message edited by skyduck

Answer:Boot Windows Vista from an external hard drive

By 'dissembled' I hope you mean you only removed it from the old laptop and didn't actually take it apart.Unless the laptops are identical you won't be able to successfully boot the vista drive on the new one because its installation is matched to the old laptop. But that said, it should still partially boot up before you get the blue screen error. If the drive was previously internal I guess you put it in an external case. Are you sure you did that correctly? The only other thing I can think of is the bios configuration or actual damage to the drive.

Asus cm5570-ap006 originally running vista premium and owner wanted an upgrade to seven. Bought a new hard drive b/c old one died. Mobo had trouble finding new drive but, after setting bios back to default(F5) it installed and finally got working.
Owner gets pc and starts getting blue screening and saying theres an f1 drive error and wont wake up after suspending without reboot.
So I get it running fine by removing avg(which is causing blue screen for some reason) and the it is now waking up after auto hibernation. But if you put into hibernation manually it wont wake. I update windows and it goes back to not recognising hard drive.
Flash bios remove cmos baterry reset bios to default and set hard drive to ahcpi and it reinstalls fine update windows and it stops working. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 already on its second hard drive due to troubles with Windows.
When I boot the computer, the final result is a black screen with a white cursore that moves when I move the mouse. I get the same result in Safe Mode. I have tried using the Dell Windows reinstall/recovery disc and have not had luck so far. I even installed a second version of Windows, but I still need to get the data files somehow and I don't know how. Today I purchased and downloaded Acronis True Image 2010 Home, but honestly don't know what to do with it! I downloaded to a CD, but don't know what to do next. Ideally I would like to repair my original install of Windows XP. If not possible, I would like help getting the data files. I have read many threads about setting up the HD as a slave on another computer, but no instructions about what this means or how to do it. I own an external drive that I just took out of the package today, but again don't know where to begin with it. HELP?

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums and not sure where the best place to ask this question is, any help would be appreciated, even if you refer me to somewhere else.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (2.5 years old). All my data is backed up so I have no concerns about recoverying data.
First, the laptop crashed and ran several chkdsk on start up. I froze several times during this. It said it had fixed some errors then started up again.
This time it wanted to do start up repair. Same thing kept happening, froze at least twenty times during this. Eventually it gave me the blue screen of death.

This repeated several times. I ran the diagnostics and it told me the hard drive could not be found (error code 0146, 2000-0146). Essentially, it's a Dell laptop (I know) and I am not bothered about recovering the hard drive.
I would, however, like to install Windows 7, or alternatively Linux, onto my external hard drive. But I just can't seem to get it to work.
I have extracted a Linux iso to the external hard drive I want to install on, onto a cd, onto a FAT32 8gb usb stick, but it has given me the bootmgr is missing error every time. I have tried it with the interal HDD in and removed.

As a temporary work-around, you should be able to run Linux from the CD or USB.
This would allow you to use your machine until a better solution is suggested.

If you can get Linux to run you might be able to format the internal HDD (using GParted for example) and then reuse it (temporary solution).

I have come across a bit of a problem. This morning I replaced 2 of my case fans as they were getting old and noisy. I booted the pc and It would not boot after stating the processor present. I tried mutiple times cleaned my cpufan etc and tried again. Still failed. After removing everything I booted fine and it turns out my pc wont boot into bios or past the processor information if my external hardisk is turned on. This hardisk is just used for backup/storage so there is not boot info on it. It worked fine before I changed the fans. Once the pc is in windows I can turn the external disk on and it works fine. Answer:External hard drive wont connect

Sounds as if the drive has failed. The fact that you are failing to get any indication on two machines is also an indicator.
You could try opening the caddy up and checking connections and even using a dock for the bare drive to confirm this.

Hi All,

I have a bit of an individual problem - I have done all the searching on google but none of the results apply to my scenario.

I have an old laptop that doesnt work too great, so i have taken the hd out and purchased an enclosure. My aim was to use it as external storage for backing up pictures/music.

When i plug it into my main machine, it recognises "mass storage device" and then "samsung 'etc etc' hard drive"

I then look into 'my computer' but it doesnt show up. I rebooted a couple of times, once with it still connected and again with it disconnected (and then connecting once booted). Have also tried the same with another laptop i have - exaxctly the same result.

still no joy

The only possible issue (looking for guidance) is that the old hard drive i am trying to connect has xp installed (although it wouldnt boot on the old laptop, hence why i removed it)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Rich

Burning to disk means the CD/DVD burner not the external hard dive. Not really a big deal. At some point you can find the files (links to files) under the cd/dvd drive and simply delete them. All that has nothing to do with the external hard drive.I don't get the proper port deal? Any old usb slot ought to work.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

OKay so I have a Maxtor one touch plus4, Seagate. 1 TB External Hard drive... It's worked fine for about the last six months or so on multiple computers. I went to access it this past weekend and it's not reading. It comes up in the device manager as there being a usb mass storage device, but the plug and play side of it isn't working and it's not coming up under my computer. I've heard of software to manually mount external drives for Linux, but I can't seem to find anything that works with Windows (Vista or XP). I was also told you can go into the registry and manually map the drive (tried doing so from the map network drives, but it's not reading.) but I have no idea where in the reg it'd be... Anyone out there have any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, comments anything?!?!?!

About a week ago, my external hard drive just stopped turning on after I turned it off.. The power supply light (on the power supply box) changes from flickering to stable when the switch on the hard drive is switched on/off. The hard drive itself doesn't turn on at all (the light never comes on).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hello Lenovo community. I only ever try to use forums as a last resort when im truly stumped, but this does mean i will have to also tell you what i have already done, so thanks for bearing with me. So here goes. Originally i had the Taskmanager fault of 100% Disk space full, which was crashing the machine to a stand still. At first i thought it was the chip, and to be fair it was getting quite hot. so i have reseated and pasted the chip and cleaned  the heatsink. It runs much cooler, and the Lenovo paste job was awful (ill never trust factory chip thermal pasting again). Ultimatley this wasnt the problem, and after much surfing of the net, i disabled Superfetch and Intelligent background transfer. The problem still persisted, and seemed to be when i opened google chrome, the disk usuage would go upto 100%, but it was not actually freezing anymore. I removed all of my temp files and cookies for google chrome, cleaned up the start boot apps, and hey presto, it was fixed, or so i thought.................. After a few days, it seemed to happen again, which is where this catastrpohic problem has arisen.I opened task manager, and accidentally ended windows explorer. Ive done this on other OS, and know that it will just quit the windows installation and give me a blank screen. Ok i thought, no bigdeal, ill just cold reset it.....However, now it seems that, after the lenovo logo appears upon startup, it wont load windows, as if windows explorer has been perm... Read more

I'm unable to connect my WD USB 3.0 external drive (with a USB 3.0 cable) to my USB 3.0 slots on my computer. All my drivers seem up to date. The drive works connected to the USB 2.0 slot on my system.

I tried a different WD USB 3.0 external drive to my computer to see if it was my computer or the drive itself, and this other WD drive worked fine. I even tried the cable from the other drive to rule out of it's a faulty cable, and the cable is fine.

So what I've gathered is that the drive won't connect to the USB 3.0 slot for some reason. I'm thinking it's either that there is something wrong with the external drive itself, or there is some sort of setting which is interfering with the connectivity. Although I'm guessing it's the former, since the other external drive connected just fine?

Any ideas?

I cant figure this one out. I have a Roswill RX35 External IDE case, my Hitachi 250GIG 7200rpm ATA/IDE hard drive works fine in the case.

My daughter has a Maxtor 250gig PATA 133 HD , I tried to use in this case , but it wont power up, whats the difference between the ATA/IDe and the PATA/133. I know her drive is fine, she forgot her power supply to use it external.

Answer:Hard drive wont power up in External Enclosure

PATA = IDE = ATA and so on in the simplest of terms.

Anyways, check the amperage pull on her drive, it could be a bit to much for the enclosure your using it in.

Hi all,

I bought a Western Digital MyBook (Essential Edition) about a month or so ago. Set up was easy and I moved all my music to it, and also backed up my photos. I used it quite a few times and then was out of town and did not use it for about two weeks. Today I tried to connect it again, and while it will show that a "external drive detected" and my device manager shows WD as a disk drive which is functioning properly and enabled - I am unable to access it. It does not show up on My computer or when I try the Explore function. I have it connected now and the light is glowing - but I cannot access it!! Please help.
Thanks so much.

I've never had any problems with my external hard drive. It's actually an internal with an enclosure, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyway, something strange happened a while ago. I went in to my external drive and see that everything is missing, and the only thing remaining is one folder (out of the hundreds that I had), with no files inside. I went to my computer to check if the data was still there and it read that there was space being used. The same amount it would have been if I had left it there.

I thought maybe it was a bad connection, so I unplugged and plugged the USB cable again. When I did that, the external didn't show up on My Computer anymore. It still makes all the sounds of a hardware being plugged in, and it shows up on the Device Manager (which says that everything is working fine). The same thing happens when I plug it in to my laptop.

Hopefully it's just a bad enclosure and I haven't lost everything inside, but does anyone know any solutions?

Answer:Computer wont read External Hard Drive

First off, take the drive out and connect it as a slave to the desktop and see if the files are still there. Also, here are words to live by...

Okay, so heres the story. My dad called saying he turned the computer off using the power strip because it had frozen. When he rebooted it said there was a problem and it would try to error correct. It failed after multiple tries, freezing at different points in the process each time. I tried repair using the windows disk but it would also freeze. I decided I would try installing windows on my backup hard drive (ATA) so that I could access files on the main hard drive (SATA), copy them over to back them up, wipe the main drive clean and reinstall windows again on there. Anyway, I encountered the same problem, the install process seems to vary in how far it gets each time but never completes. If it stops installing because it froze, and if i restart the computer it will generally show the windows startup screen, then freeze (often also blurring the screen slightly and lighting up random pixels in the black background).

I thought I would disable to quick start on the BIOS. After doing so and after a couple restarts the computer would freeze at the BIOS screen. I pulled the CMOS battery and reset it. Put the battery back in and returned to the BIOS to turn the self test back on (disable the quick start i mean). I restart the computer, this time it went past the BIOS screen but said that there was a checksum error on the CMOS, but it allowed me to continue. I have heard that this is commonly the fault of pulling the CMOS battery and not because the BIOS is corrup... Read more

i used WBFS manager 3.0 to put a super mario galaxy 2 iso as a backup on my seagate external hard drive. (my original is scratched up enough as it is and has lots lag) it worked perfectly on my wii but then i decided to backup all my wii games, just in case. but first i had to get them off of one computer to another because i would not have access to the other for a long time. so i formatted the external hard drive using wbfs manager, not my computer and then my computer stopped showing that it is plugged in. when i plug it in the computer makes the usb noise and the light on the hard drive shows up, but i cant access it. i tried going into cmd and doing dskchk but it didn't work it said unable to directly access it then i tried going into disk management but it said i got an I/O error. then i clicked on the seagate drive (it said drive 1) but the weird thing is that it said it had 2TB or memory when its only a 300GB drive. i couldn't have mistaken it for my computer's hard drive because its only 1TB. i have tried using all the usb ports, front and back, used different cables, tried it on 3 different computers, but same problem. i tried uninstalling and re installing the driver but to no avail. it could not have been damaged because i was using it right before i formatted it. and only after that did it stop working. its not a registry error because i did regcure but it didn't fix it. all i want is to use my drive again. i would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help. thanks... I have a LaCie external hard drive (this one here) that was given to me by a friend, and for one reason or another W10 wont show the external drive as an option under Devices and Drives when selecting "This PC" or My Computer. I can see my SSD with the OS and the internal 2nd drive but not the LaCie. The only place it shows that it knows a drive is connected is in the task bar where it gives the option to eject the drive and in "Devices and Printers". And selecting the drive from there doesn't provide many options, it just opens the properties window for the drive. I don't even see anything telling me what format the drive is, but I have a sneaking suspicion its formatted for a Mac. Is there a way I can get this drive to show on my computer?

The only thing I can think of is to try installing some firmware updates from LaCie's website, but since this drive contains film footage (that im not sure has been backed up or not so its possible this is the only copy of the footage) I want to be absolutely certain that installing the firmware wont erase anything on the drive.

Answer:Detecting but Wont Open LaCie External Hard Drive

You are probably right that the drive is formatted HFS+ for Mac.

With the drive connected, open Disk Management (search for Computer Management > Disk Management). Here you can see what the drive looks like to Windows.

If you right click on the LaCie drive shown you may have the option to format the partition(s) NTFS for windows, or you could convert the entire disk to a MBR Disk.

If the procedure is not obvious you could post a screenshot of the Disk Management window for us to look at.

Hi everyone,

I have been having problems with a 350gb external hard drive and using my ipod as an external drive. I have recently bought a DivX / Xvid DVD player that as USB compatibility.

But for some reason my hard drive wont load into the DVD player, it loads the USB menu, but wont load any files and goes back to the main screen. Now my brother has the same ipod i plug his in and all folders and files load straight away.

Are there problems with my external hard drive and ipod drive. Could there be a corrupt file on there. Is there any software i could use to look for bad sectors or clean up etc? Any help would be great i just dont get why mine wont load but others will into it.

Also when i have both of them connected in my front two USB ports on my PC sometimes the external hard drive goes off, a red light appears and drive is removed... I just tried it then, my ipod was connected into my front USB on PC, so i connected my External HD in the port next to it, and it went off wouldnt load, big RED light. I turned it off took the ipod out and just put in the hard drive and its fine, dont understand.

I just want to get them working and working with my dvd player mainly!

Cheers
Paul

I'd like to be able to take a large external hard drive, and partition the first 20% to use for boot images with some kind of boot loader, and the rest for data partitions.

Otherwise, can someone help me find an article to show how to get the following onto a usb flash drive along with a boot loader (and how big of a flash drive do i need?)

-ubuntu live environment
-bart PE
-ultimatebootcd
-disk wipe
-windows xp install

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me.

As the title says my external hard drive wont allow me to move/copy my files back to my laptop. its a Seagate 500GB external hard drive which I have owed for a few years now with not as much use as id like. I can view photos and other files play videos and music off it but when I go to move a file over to the desktop it pops up with a windows explorer tab showing it has stopped working. which is weird as it has nothing to do with windows explorer then it seems to reload the main screen. I've attached a video showing the problem in the hope someone can diagnose the issue. I did just manage to send a photo and a music file using email back to my computer from the hard drive so its not impossible to get them all back but that would take forever haha. it seems I cant upload the video which is annoying as it would make it easier for people to work out the problem.

Ive just got a new HDD and also a caddy for my old drive. Having got the new system working nicely, ive been trying to get the pc to boot from the old drive in the caddy. I set it up in the bios to boot from USB - HDD but all it manages to do is go to that 'Windows did not start correctly last time' screen and when i select anything, it 'thinks' for a few mins and then restarts!
The drive still works if i plug it into an IDE but not in the caddy.
Im running XP with NTFS on the drive. Its a 40Gb matxor. Its only 2% fragmented and only half full. My MB is Gigibyte with an AMD 64 CPU. The caddy and drive work fine as an external on my new windows installation on the new drive.
Its all very random. My only thought is perhaps the jumper settings, what should i use?

How do I make Windows 8.1 boot from an external hard drive with linux on it? I already changed the boot menu priority in the BIOS (UEFI). But when I restart my laptop while my external HD is connected to the laptop, it doesnt boot from the external HD. Instead it boots directly to the Win 8.1 Desktop. Is there something additional I should do in the BIOS?

Is it a UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot? If yes you likely have to turn secure boot off.

Good day all,

I have a littel issue that I'm hoping someone can resove 4 me.

I have a Dell Latitude D610 laptop with WinXP Pro installed with SP2, and it has USB2. I removed the harddrive and put in another one, formated and installed XP Pro in FAT32 on it with SP2, then installed all the drivers. Pull out the new harddrive and put it into a external USB2 harddrive enclosure. I put back my original harddrive into my laptop, set my BIOS sequence to boot from USB first and let it run.

My problem is, once the black XP screen with little blue progress bar starts, it will stay on the screen for about 10 seconds max and reboot itself, then give me the boot options, i.e. safe mode, normal, etc ... I select normal, and same thing over and over again. I also trien safe mode, and it does start to lead files, and stops half way throught, then reboots ...

Any ideas ?

Thank you very much in advance to all !

My brother operates a heating and air-conditioning business close to my home and I usually help build and maintain his computers and office network. I have his office desk hard drives set up in RAID where there is always an exact duplicate of the boot drive should one drive fail. He called recently asking if I could set up an external hard drive that could be cloned after the end of each business day in case of failure of the only hard drive in his laptop computer. From what I can see on Google, it looks like most Bios's have the capability to boot from either flash or external HD's, but problems exist with both the external HD's ability to serve as boot disk (Western Digital specifically states their external drives will not boot), and with creating a bootable operating system. Anyone have any information on how I can help him out with this, if it is possible. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I own an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop with windows 7 installed. I have a problem where the hdd plugs in at. The hdd plugs into a connecter witch is part of the mother bored. The only way I can get it to run is if i tilt the laptop backwards and put a wii remote under it. as long as it doesn't move, it will work. So knowing i need a new connecter, I find a situation. I go myself a cord that i can plug my hdd into and plug it into the laptop via usb. I set the bios to first run the usb hard drive and second the boot manager. It worked.
As the "Starting Windows" screen was done loading, the screen when blue for a fraction of a second, then reset to the Acer logo screen at start up. I got a message about it wanting to run a Boot up repair. I did this and when it was done, the same thing happened. I put the hdd back into the laptop with it tiilted and it worked just fine. I put another hdd into the laptop with Windows 7 with the old hdd in the usb chord. I got the same result.

How can i get passed the "Starting Windows" screen when booting from the external hdd?

You cannot boot windows from an external usb type device; not going to happen. You CAN boot linux from an external usb type device; just not windows. This is because of how windows deals with usb.

Hey so I am planning on putting ubuntu on an external hard drive. If I install Ubuntu on it, can I boot to it? I don't want to change any settings in bios, I just want to boot to ubuntu occasionally.

Answer:Can I boot to an external Hard drive?

That would depend on the interface type of the external hard drive and the bios booting options on your motherboard. If your system is not compatable with that configuration, you could make a partion on your main drive and set up for dual boot.

I have a Seagate 500GB external hard drive that was formatted on my Macbook at FAT32. I was using it without problem both on my Macbook and my brother's Windows 98 desktop. I tried to use in with my new laptop, running Windows 7. I found out I had to assign a volume letter to it in order to see its contents. I did so, only to get a message asking me to format the drive! Moreover, now I cannot use it neither on my Macbook nor at my brother's desktop... I tried removing the letter but nothing changed; it is still unrecognizable, telling me that no known operating system is installed in it (or something like that)... I guess it's a disk header thing (after assigning a volume letter). Maybe I could fix this with some kind of software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Dionysis.

Answer:External Hard Drive can't boot!

Sounds like you're going to have to reformat the drive (on the Windows 7 pc). I had thought there were differences between the Apple and PC filing systems.

I wish to format an external Hard Drive for Windows 10 and then install the Drive into my Laptop and load Windows 10 from the DVD I created from the ISO file.
My reason for doing this is to get a completely clean install, as every other time I have tried I end up with a poorly function Windows 10 PC and some of the old information such as Wall Paper, Network setting, Home Group etcetera are still set up in the New "clean" installation which I believe are causing the very slow Boot up along with other problems. Each time in the past I have agreed to "keep nothing" but that does not seem to work!

Answer:Format external Hard Drive as a boot drive

plug into another PC using a usb caddy
the drive will appear in disk management either right click and select format (do not do a quick format) or you could use command prompt (admin) and run diskpart to remove all partitions and make just one partition on the drive before formatting.
refit in the laptop
ensure DVD is set as first boot device
insert DVD and and press any key to boot from he windows iso (DVD must be bootable made using windows media creation tool for w 10).
follow the prompts to install windows (you cannot install windows onto the drive while it is in the us caddy on the other PC).

Hi,
I bought a new Dell M3800 laptop and it worked fine for three month.
One morning it refused booting. The Dell Windows Recovery CD will not load either Just goes to black screen.
I tried everything I could think of and everything I found on google with no luck.
Yesterday I removed the HD and connected it as an external drive changed the Boot options and it worked.
But it still will not boot when connected internally. The Dell diagnostic tool does not find any problems.

Dell M3800.
SSD 250GB drive.

Please help. What could be causing this?
Ben

ok, i run a amd 2600+ 768mb ram, xp home, 40gb hd, radeon 9600SE (replaces integrated) i recently found a 20gb in an old comp so i stuck it in. i had some issues getting my computer to register and find it. (i.e. xp would load and wouldt load the newly added hd) after a while of tinkering i gave up and put the jumpers back n place and took out the hd. now my 40gb wont load.... it gets past the ide detection then freezes with a blinking "_" in the top left..... ive redone all the jumpers and tried everything. note: this is a compaq prefab. thanks for ur help

Answer:hard drive wont boot

I would start by checking the IDE connector on the MoBo, one side may have lifted out in the process.

After double-checking all the connectors -- I would look at the jumper on you HD to make sure it was on master

I have a maxtor hard drive that came out of a dell with a pentium 2 in it. The hard drive previously had windows 98 on it but it crashed and wouldnt start up. I took the hard drive and put it in my brothers computer and it came up as a second disk E: on my computer, which is normal. I loaded windows XP onto my Dell Hard Drive, Then stuck the hard drive back into my dell and it wont boot up, it says "Please Remove Disk Or Other Media"

Someone please help me with this, its been extremley frustrating.

Answer:Why wont my Hard Drive Boot up? PLEASE HELP!!

If I am understanding you right, you can not do what you are trying to do. You can not load XP onto a hard drive when installed in computer A, then move the hard drive to computer B as is and expect it to work unfortunately. They have completely different hardware configs and therefore drivers sets.

This is especially true for a Dell, as they have done all kinds of tweaks and shortcuts to the hardware they make. You need to have the Dell specific CD to load windows.

After trying to install Norton Systemworks, which took me through a series of dialog boxes I?ve had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall xp from the recovery disc. The installation seems to be ok but when the pc restarts with the disc in it runs through the whole installation process again. If I remove the cd it continues to look for the cd and wont boot from the hard drive. I?ve looked at their website but my problem is not listed. The pc is a new Evesham MKR 64. Can anyone help?

Answer:pc wont boot from hard drive

Have you changed the boot options in the bios so it boots from the Hard drive and not the CD?,this seems as what is happening.

Okay this is what happen My friend got me to install Linux on my laptop and told me to wipe drive he said it would be easy to reinstall windows later. So after a few months of Linux my sister's husband needed a computer for his school so I decided to switch it back to Windows 10 for him to use because I have a desktop as my main so didn't mind letting him have the laptop. I installed windows 10 flawlessly updated it put security software along with a few engineering programs he wanted was running smoothly gave it to him. Get a call about week later saying it wont boot he said it work very good but now it wont. So he gave it back to me and I tried what i did before but windows cant repair it or install. i have tried system recovery but since it was wiped the image is no longer there. I then tried one or two partition recovery software's on it. it said it recovered the partitions but windows still wont install it. So after many attempts and videos and article etc to attempt to fix i am out of luck so thought I post here to see if any can help. When it comes to the actual computer meaning boot up into windows i can fix about anything but when it cant boot or partion lost etc i kinda a newbie at it.

Recently I had a laptop(IBM T42) come in with a full hard drive, i got a hitachi drive that was purchased from the ibm site, completely compatible with the laptop. I made an image of the full hard drive then copied it over to the new bigger drive, extended the partitions, and put the new hd into the laptop, and during boot up the screen just stays black after POST. I can go into the bios and see the harddrive, i can boot from the xp cd and see the hd, I can even go into the recovery console and get on the hd, in the command prompt, but when it comes down to booting from the hd it just doent work. Any Ideas? I initially thought that maybe the drive needed to be completely formatted, so i wen ahead and formatted it, but it was a no go. Then I put the image back on the hd, and intalled windows on to the c: partition(two partiotioned drive) and the computer could boot from it no problem, then i reimaged it again and tried check ing the boot.ini file, thinking something got twisted, but it was unsuccesful. I am ****ed off at this drive so if anyone has any ideas they would be most appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive wont boot

I would try dong it the old-fashioned way and just install windows cleanly on to the new hardrive and use copy and paste to move over files and google to find software. very time consuming but eliminates the issue of an improper disk image

hi.

i have a packard bell h5 notebook (3.2ghz, 1g ram, Win XP) which is playing up.

most of the time, the machine will not boot to windows. it'll run through the usual initial statup screens then stall on the packard bell startup graphic (where i'm given the option to enter bios setup).

it'll pause for much longer than usual (i'm assuming it's trying to detect the OS to boot from) then after a while it'll bring me to a DOS looking screen where it advises: "reboot and select a proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". i have checked bios and it correctly has the hard drive as the he primary boot device, and there is on secondary selected.

On occasion, like now, the machine will boot successfully to windows, altho it takes much longer than usual. when i use the laptop, applications are slower loading and media files stall alot. internet exlorer also seems slower too.

the laptop has not suffered any physical damage and i haven't installed any new applications/software. nor is the machine left on overnight often. the machine was working fine before hand and i haven't opened up the machine and messed about with the hard drives jumpers or anything.

how do i fix this and get the machine back to its super dooper, high performing self?

help (!)

I have a older computer, w/ASUS P4b266-LA motherboard, it has a green light on it. Recently, my mouse, and keyboard went out. Try to turn computer on and my cd rom drive had a steady light. Dissconnect using the power supply plug, wait at least 7 min. Turn computer back on, dont hear the hard drive booting nor the a: drive trying to work.

What could be the problem. Mother boards lights up mouse and keyboard do not respond. Monitor is blank. Please help!!!

Answer:Hard drive wont boot

And it could just as likely be your hard drive. Go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download their drive fitness test. Run it on the drive jumpered as a slave in another computer. Also consider corruption of the operating system as a possibility. So running a borrowed hard drive as a test install might tell you a lot..
Also check your BIOS settings.
Motherboards seldom fail. That ASUS P4b266 is old but not ancient, and is not known for failures. So I agree with Zenosincks that the power supply is also suspect. It may be useful to buy a good power supply tester ($10 to $25), or temporarily test your system using a borrowed power supply.
Anything electrical has the potential for creating weird stuff... any pci card or any video graphics card, when defective, can have spurious responses that make the entire system seem flakey.

I have a T61 with XP on it. The factory hard drive was starting to show its age, so I got a 500GB WD Black drive for it. I used Acronis True Image to clone the old hard drive to the new one. I used my desk top to do the cloning. When I plug the new hard drive in, the cursor just flashes and it does not boot. I thought maybe the clone was bad, so I put the new hard drive back on my desk top, and was able to boot it all the way to the windows start up screen. If I plug the old drive back in the laptop, it boots fine, just refuses to boot off the new drive.

Solved!

Answer:New hard drive wont boot

Got it figured out. Put the new hard drive into the computer, put the old hard drive in a USB enclosure, and made a Acronis boot CD, and did the clone from the laptop. Works like a champ, and it flys now.

OK HERE GOES PPL...ANYONE WHO CAN HELP WOULD BE DOING ME THE BIGGEST FAVOUR IN THE WORLD.

Basically ive been a bit silly....my pc wasnt shutting down (i think it had a virus on it) i used to get rundll32 errors when ever i tried to shut down or re start, so id just switch it off at the back.

Anyways the otherday i was met with the error msg "BOOT_DRIVE_UNMOUNTABLE" when i started up the pc...(a blue screen before windows loaded, which halted windows from loading)

So i booted windows from the CD, and ran system recovery (pressed R then ran CHKDSK /R).......it took a while but found and fixed errors. Then upon re starting windows i now get as far as the black XP logo screen...but then nothing.....just stops.

I then tried to boot off the XP again and run recovery.....this time i am met with:

1. C:\WINDOWS

then im asked to select which version of windows i want to load....as there only one choice (1) i choose that and press enter but it just freezes.

i have also tried to reinstall windows (the other option when booting from cd) and this just crashes too.

IS MY HARD DRIVE KNACKERED? WILL I BE ABLE TO RETRIEVE ANY DATA? I REALLY NEED SOME HELP HERE GUYS....THANKS

So my gf gave me her laptop after it wouldn't boot cause it was missing a sys file. I have a usb hard drive hookup, so i threw it on , grabbed all of the documents and anything she would need in case of a reinstall. Replaced the sys file, throw the hd back in, and same error message. Fine, i'll reinstall. Go to boot winxp from 2 different discs, and it wouldn't load the files. It would stop on a certain file saying, could not read, press F3 to quit. Fine, FU windows, i used a drive image utility to copy my fresh install of xp onto the laptop HD. Still a no go. The laptop claims it cant read 2 other .sys files. The laptop is a Toshiba, with an 80gb hd. I'm thinking the HD might have just up and died, but im not sure. I know i hate making threads like this, as much as you guys hate reading them, but im fresh outta ideas. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Answer:ugh, gf's hard drive, xp wont boot

Run some diagnostics on your HDD, there' sprobably some bad sectors. Also, run memtest and see if the RAM isn't going bad. could be alot of things, but it sounds to me like the HDD is taking a crap.

Could anyone advise me how i can access this to back it up (i know the password of course).

Hi Guys, my old hard drive committed suicide on my desktop, so I bought a new one and installed it, I was trying for days to install windows 7 from a copy disc, the computer would not boot at all, either from the dvd drive or from an external usb drive which I made, anyway I have another desktop running win 8.1 pro, so I disconnected the hard drive from that and attached the new hard drive, I the installed Windows 7 home premium onto that drive, and it worked fine, I then took the new HD and installed it into the original desktop that would not boot, I booted it up and it seamed to work fine, until it came to the windows is starting screen, then it stops and reboots itself, when it boots it opens up an option screen saying, windows failed to boot run repair, or start as normal, obviously I ran repair, but I keep getting, cannot repair this do you wish to send a report, so guys I am presuming the drivers from the win 8 desktop were different to the win 7, any help on fixing this please, thanks in advance

Answer:New hard drive wont boot

You can not install it on another system then bring it to a new one like that, the drivers and hardware are not the same. You need to reinstall it on the pc you want to fix, when in the installer tell it to delete the partitions and make a new one so it will install fresh. what is the specs of the computer that will not boot, i'm betting now that it starts with that drive period you can install windows on it like you were trying in the beginning.
