how to troubleshoot 5 minute bootup (prev 10s) after win update reboot

Question: how to troubleshoot 5 minute bootup (prev 10s) after win update reboot

came home to see windows telling me it needs to reboot due to a recent update. upon reboot I noticed it was sitting there at the animated windows logo prior to the logon screen. the numlock led on the keyboard was stuck so I reset the computer with no change. I then tried safe mode with also no luck. I reset once more and did some googling for quick solutions and about 5 minutes later the computer goes to the logon screen. this is repeatable. i ran a chkdsk /r /f with no change. im not quite sure what to check from here but something is definitely wrong when I go from a 10 second start time to 5 minutes. any ideas?

Preferred Solution: how to troubleshoot 5 minute bootup (prev 10s) after win update reboot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: how to troubleshoot 5 minute bootup (prev 10s) after win update reboot

Hello and welcome Kevin mate if you can get safe mode which I am assuming of course do a system restore to as far back as you like and then it is just a matter of installing updates until one finds the offender and then you just hide it so it doesn't bother you again. (Right click on it and pick Hide)

If yo are not offered may restore points click on the box for further back ones see pic but I suspect you know about this option

Question: 5 minute + bootup

When I start my computer everything appears to load quickly (including my Gmail notifier, which quickly tells me what new emails I have) except McAfee Security Center takes over 5 minutes. While I'm waiting for it to load, opening documents or programs takes forever. And if I open an internet browser, it tells me there is no web connection and I can't load any sites. Also, the network icon in the task bar shows me as not being connected. Strange though, since my Gmail notifier loads fast and gives me the most up to date info on my email account.

I don't know if this is a system shell issue, a virus, or just some bug somewhere. It's been going on for about a month and I've been keeping track of all my startup applications - nothing unusual there. When I used to run a registry scan and correct all the issues, my computer would start quickly. But then usually on the very next restart it would be back to its old ways. Now the registry scan doesn't help. I also run AdAware and Spybot - they don't help either.

Could McAfee be the cause, or its slow load just a side effect of something more sinister?

This is really annoying and there's nothing worse than turning on a computer and having to wait 5 to 10 minutes to do anything on it. Please help

My specs are as follows:
Dell 1720
Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium
-with Service Pack 1
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor (2.2ghz)
3.00 gigs of RAM

Answer:5 minute + bootup

McAfee is known for being a huge resource hog. It might be doing some kind of scan or update that slows the PC during start up.

In the past few days my computer stops on the first boot screen (just as it gets to "press del to enter setup"). If I just leave it, it eventually goes on to boot up normally and Win XP works fine. Is something about to blow, or could it be the motherboard battery's going flat? It's an ASUS mobo, about two years old (which is why I thought of the battery -- though with other computers I've had the battery has just died completely). This happened while I was installing a new printer -- but it wasn't even turned on when I booted up and the problem first arose, so I can't see that it's related. The printer works fine, and I've since installed a new USB2 card as well.

A friend of mine bought a IBM 6645-P1G from a guy who said he had surplus in a warehouse. It turns out the guy was a swindler so we can't get any answers from him about what the computer was used for before. The computer has 10gb HDD, 192MB of RAM, and is a PIII 733mhz. It is running Windows XP SP2 (I think PRO). The original CDROM drive was switched for a DVD-RW. Every time he boots up, the PC freezes. When I tested it out, it sometimes took as little as 30 seconds after windows finished booting up to freeze up. It would not respond at all. The 6645-P1G is one of the smallest desktop computers I have ever seen. I opened it up and everything is packed quite tightly inside. Is it possible it is overheating? Any suggestions as to why this would be happening would be appreciated. The problem is, I can't imagine that IBM made this computer so unstable that it freezes every bootup. So it has to be something that was added. I don't know what OS it originally came with, but the only other thing I can think of is the DVD-RW drive or added RAM. Any help with this situation would be appreciated as the owner can not use the computer at all at present.

Hold volume down and the power button at the same time until the phone vibrates and the phone will restart. No data is erased.

Problem 1: XP Home reboots in the 3+ minute range. Once it gets to the 'Starting Windows XP' screen, it loads fine. Some damnthing is hanging.

Problem 2: MY comp is running slow. Expeciially on the net. Task manager is reporting no excess network use. IE 6 acts like it's on a 56k modem. I use Mozilla FireFox, which runs fine, but my wife is a IE 6 fanatic. Shareaza and WinMX load slowly and take a minute or more to change tabs. BitTornado (latest versions all) loads and runs fine, but seems to hang after an hour or so. It stops updating speeds, seeds, peers, etc. It also closes slowly. Once I get online, the comp slams on the brakes. Mozilla is the only app that seems unaffected. Sygate is also logging a lot of portscans. 7 in the in the last hour or so. All from the same IP address. I've tried a reboot to get a new IP adress, but the port scans start up agan after about an hour, last about an hour then stop. So far I've resisted the urge to backrace since it'll only egg the @$$hole on.....though if anyone has an ICBM I could use..........

NOTE I read the rules and I'm not asking for help with my P2P apps. Just mentioning them since they are affected. I installed the other ones since BT was acting flakey... Read more

Hi! Had good results with this forum; back again!Working on my nephew's computer, I noticed Google searches were being redirected. Microsoft didn't catch the initial problem so I ran Malwarebytes and Eset Online scanner which found and clean some problems. Rebooted. Now every I boot the computer it says it will "restart automatically in one minute" (both safe and normal mode)OS is VistaAV is MSEAdvanced Boot options does NOT give me "Repair you computer" optionI do not have the Windows installation disk, although it might be possible to find with a lot of hunting. Please help!(As an aside, the reason I went to my nephew's computer was to check on the router... I have a several month old Dell Dimension 4600 running WinXP Home, with dual monitors, which runs great, I'm happy. If I have to reboot for some reason, everything shuts down fine, but system shows the F2/ F12 screen briefly, then goes to black screen with the underline cursor
for 5 minutes! After 5 minutes, the HD kicks in, XP loads normally and everything runs fine. Scanning through the various BIOS setup items, Fast Boot is on, system is set to boot from C: first, then CD; and there dont seem to be any "weird" or obviously wrong settings of any kind. Any suggestions?
I have also run msconfig and gone though turning off start up programs, etc. but once loading XP begins, everything runs fine, just takes 5 minutes to start...

I have been beating my head against the wall with this one.
Just got a Gateway E-9520T for a customer. We spent the last week configuring it, installing updates, etc--but it's pretty much vanilla Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit with exchange 2003. We haven't installed any of their customer applications yet.

During the setup and testing we did everything from leaving it on at night, to shutting down over night, rebooting, etc...

A few days ago it suddenly started taking around 30 minutes to boot and 30 minutes to shutdown.

During the startup/shutdown the RAID array is going crazy. Tons of file access.
When starting up it performs POST correctly, starts booting Windows (2003 Server Logo, with the little scroll thing at the bottom), and then the screen flashes like it's about to switch to graphical mode. But it hangs there with a blank screen for 30ish minutes.

The morning this started we hadn't installed any new drivers, updates, applications, or anything. Just fired the box up.

Gateway thought it might have been the MegaRAID card, so they sent a new one. No change. MegaRAID says their latest firmware fixes an issue that sounds like this problem. Updated the MegaRAID firmware, and it's still taking forever to boot.

What I've done:
Waited forever for the system to come up, rollback driver updates for the RAID card. (no effect)
Booted off Gateway's recovery CD (at their request) and used it to reinstall the factory default drivers. (no effec... Read more

I have a lenovo ideapady400 that is now almost 2 months old. Earlier today, I noticed that it did not properly go into hibernate when I shut it. The keyboard was still lit up, with no LCD display (including not if I hit Fn+F2) and with the fan at high rpms. I shut it down by holding the powerbutton, and upon rebooting it, it took over 4 minutes to get back to the desktop. It now requires the 4 minutes every time I restart, and it never goes into hibernate with the lid closed (it must be shut down by the power button).Fearing that the computer may be having a serious issue, I tried to make a backup with Onekey recovery, which failed to write a backup (repeatedly). It returned an error saying it couldn't access the partition. I then uninstalled onekey recovery, downloaded it again from the lenovo website. Now when I run onekey recovery it says my system is not able to write a backup.I am now stuck in a tough spot of not being able to backup my laptop and and not being able to do a recovery without losing everything. On the lenovo support site, when I select startup issues, the feedback it gives me is "Thank you for your question. This is a known problem and a solution is being developed. Please check back for updates."Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the main (shutdown/startup) issue? As the laptop is under warranty, should I just send it back to Lenovo?

Answer:ideapad y400 won't shutdown/4 minute reboot

hi hansweeks,
If you PC came with a HDD+SSD drive, try to boot into the BIOS (by repeatedly pressing F2 on startup) and check if both the HDD and SSD are detected (if you're missing one, that HDD might be faulty and needs to be replaced.
If both HDD's are detected (or if your PC came with only a SATA HDD) try to run an HDD diagnostic. Try HD Tune to run HDD error checking in WIndows or create a bottable HDD diagnostic (see steps below).
1. Download the the UBCD ISO
2. Burn the ISO using imgburn
3. Insert the CD that you just created into the defective computer and reboot
4. Upon reboot, continuously press F12 and boot from the ODD/CD-DVD
To burn the diagnostic software on a flashdrive, follow this guide
If you find any errors, you will need send the unit to Lenovo for service. Support phone list here.
For data backup, you can copy / paste your files on a USB flashdrive / hard drive or use this software to clone your hard drive.
Hope this helps

Just this afternoon, I went to use my PC and got the following error; Windows has experienced a critical error and will restart in 1 minute.

Running Windows 7 64 bit....With automatic updates so it should be the latest version of Windows...

My anti virus (Avira 2012 Internet Suite) pops up and states I have 2 viruses. But before the AV can do anything (delete the files) Windows shuts down....I finally got into Safe Mode and tried running my AV, while it was scanning I then got a BSOD. Had to start all over again; Running MalwareBytes now before trying to do the AV scan, just to see if MalwareBytes catches anything.

I have uninstalled the only application I've installed in 3 months, and problem still persists...

I have a Hijackthis log if it needs to be viewed...Just let me know and I'll upload it.

Answer:Windows has a critical error and will reboot in 1 minute

when you get the 1 minute warning, try typing from the start menu "shutdown -a" or "shutdown /a", and the countdown should go away, and you should be able to remove the viruses.

Be sure to disable your system restore backups (delete them), or the viruses may come back. Re-enable them as soon as you are sure you have gotten rid of the viruses.

So ever since I upgraded to a GeForce GTX 460, I've been getting these ~1min long freezes every time my PC just finished loading Windows (either after a cold boot or reboot).

What could be causing this?

EDIT: This didn't happen to me with my old Radeon HD 5770.

Answer:Windows freezes for over ~1 minute after each cold boot/reboot

I would suspect a driver issue fist thing. Check here for the July 2010 version: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

is any method but nokia software tool?
i have lumai 720 .

Answer:I want to go back from my Windows 8.1 update 1 (Dev Prev) to Windows 8.1 Cyan, how do I go about this?

1 The use of the lumia software recovery tool is the most safe way to do it.
2 There is another method but than you need to flash your rom and that i would not recommend because you need "experience" and if you do it wrong you brick your phone.
3 You could go to a Nokia service center maybe they could do it for you.
4 With a hard reset you can not go back to cyan. You stay on pfd
5 You do not to roll down to get denim, unchecking the box in the app is enough to get Denim

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying "there are updates for your computer" (it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs.

Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware...just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I shut down the computer for the night and turned it on again and the same thing is happening. Is this a software or hardware issue? I'm thinking that maybe my System Fonts are corrupted, but I don't know. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.

I am running Windows XP Home Ed. SP2. I am having huge problems with it! I just bought this computer a month ago from a friend. He didnt mention that he had any problems and now he has left the state. Go figure, right? Anyway, his factory warranty is no longer valid. He had XP loaded when he bought the computer, so no program cd came with it. In other words, I cannot reinstall XP.

Problems are this: I cannot system restore to _any_ date. The Help & Support option on the Start menu will not show up at all if I click on it. The Search option on the Start menu will show up as an explorer... the little dog will be on the left hand side of the screen, but the options that should appear above the dogs head will not show up?? So I cannot perform a search because the entire screen stays white. I cannot 'troubleshoot' any hard/software on my computer. I click on the button and nothing happens.

Another funky thing, my computer automatically accesses Windows Update and loads new updates... but if I run IE and try to go to the 'Tools' - 'Windows Update' site? It will load and say done on the bottom... but nothing shows up on the screen!! It stays white! How bizarre is that? When I try to go to Microsoft Help and Support Website... nothing will load. The screen stays white. When I try to access my hotmail account? Nothing will load and the screen stays white.

I realize these are probably all stupid problems and easily fixed, but really... I am stumped. I am not a ... Read more

You are in a bad situation without a recovery CD. Is this a name brand system (Dell, Compaq, HP, etc.)? You may want to contact the manufacturer to see if you can get a new CD. Your computer should have a MS key on the case to make your system legit, so getting a replacement CD shouldn't be a problem.

Is there something to fix the fix?

I already installed (several times) the SP1 Rediness hotfix.

Hello there,
I have seen many similar threads on this, and have tried various solutions without success. Having just repaired Windows XP from my original CD, I thought I'd better seek help from wiser people than myself.

Symptoms of my problem are:-
On bootup (often after a Windows update or disk scan, etc), My PC boots up with just wallpaper and no desktop icons or taskbar. Additionally, I cannot even get CTRL-ALT-DEL to work to see what tasks are running. My only option here is to press the off button and then reboot. Often on reboot, my taskbar and icons are back again. However, this has been happening too frequently, and is becoming annoying.

Secondly, I have had situations where my PC has been freezing, meaning that I cannot click on any icons, and I get windows appearing with blank labels (e.g. invitations in Chat software where I cannot read the sender, or Outlook Express appearing with no labels on my E-mail). In these occasions I have to press the off button as well - cannot shut down the PC with CTRL-ALT-DEL or anything else.

I run Windows XP SP2 on a Pentium 4 3.6GHz, 1GB of RAM. I have run Virus and Spyware scans and Register Clean-ups (using CCleaner), but these do not seem to have picked up any problems. Also have run chksk on my 2 hard-drives and no errors detected.

Another symptom has been that Windows Updates have failed recently after my repair.

Any assistance on this would be appreciated. I can post Hijack This logs or anything else as required.

I have an odd situation I have been tracking for some time and I think I have it isolated to when it will occur and when it does not. I am posting
it just to see if anyone else has this issue and knows of a fix. My guess is most people just think their PC is stuck and power off and back on to reboot.
The issue was that when my Windows 7 pro laptop applied a Defender update  the laptop took roughly 45 minutes to reboot.
What I found was the issue happens in these situations:

The Defender patch was 400KB or largerA Windows Restart is used to apply the patchIf I applied the patch via a Windows update manually, then issues a Windows RestartIf I allow the patch to apply during a Windows Shutdown, the next power on boot is delayed
It does not happen in this situation:

I apply the patch via Windows Update, then do a shutdown to power off the unit, then power the laptop back
on, there is no issue.
In all instances the patch is applied successfully based on what the Windows update history shows. The patch itself applies very quickly in all situations
To me it seems like a Restart after a Defender update is causing Defender to run a scan before allowing the laptop to boot. The laptop will just
stay on the Starting Windows screen with the 4 colored window for 45 minutes then boot normally. Typically running a Defender scan on the laptop takes about 45 minutes which is why I think the Windows Update\Restart sequence is triggering a scan. Normally

I am looking for a way to change the 10-minute reboot nagging, through the registry specifically and not through gpedit.

I have already set NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers=1 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

I no longer get forced reboots, but I still receive the 10-minute nag popup, reminding me to reboot.

Now, I am aware I can change this with gpedit.msc, however I wish to make a .reg file to automatically run through the somewhat large list of registry changes I find myself having to make with every new Windows install. I am also aware that the reminder cannot usually be entirely removed, only set to 9999 minutes. This is fine.
Please, post no copy+pasted responses of how to do this through the gpedit GUI as this is not what I am looking for.
I have trawled google and only found results on how to set the option through gpedit. Any registry related google results refer to the change I have already made, which disables the forced reboots but not the nagging reminder.

If there's a way to change this with gpedit using the command line and not the GUI, I'll take that as a backup.

Registry is preferred.

Answer:Windows Update 10-minute reminder. How to change through *registry*?

Lighten up! Big bold letters won't help you get a response from the volunteers here.

There are a couple of resources that you should learn how to use:
Process Monitor and a Group Policy Search website.

Run Process Monitor while you make the changes thru gpedit. You can see the registry changes being made. Then search the website linked to above for one of the registry Values that was created or changed when you hit "Apply" within gpedit.

This might be the info that you are looking for ( but I'm not positive because I'm not in a place where I can research this further for you.
Delaying the reboot after Windows Update is asking for trouble... but I have to do that on a few computers where reboots can only take place at certain times.

So Windows 10 updates somehow managed to become even more frustrating.

Started up my PC this morning to watch a video. A few minutes into that video, I get a message on my screen telling me I'm about to be logged out and a shutdown has been scheduled for one minute. No postpone button, just a 'close' button. Windows didn't even have the decency to restart, just completely shutdown.

Started up my PC, got back into my video. Few minutes later, I get the same message! This time opened a Word document and mashed some letters into it, hoping that would halt the shutdown (cause I'm dumb and didn't think to try shutdown /a).
Nope! Shutdown anyway, didn't care about my unsaved work! Same thing, shutdown, no restart.

Started up again, opened Word and found no document recovery. asdfgdfg was gone forever...
How ticked off would you be if you were working on a document, went to get a drink and returned to your PC to find it shutdown and your work lost.
Is this normal behaviour for Windows 10 update? It's the first time I've had it happen.

Been having a problem with black screen at bootup, searches for analog/didital signal then nothing, this is not everytime but has just started to happen more often, its just happened again this time got half way through first bootscreen then back to analog/didital,i just left it and about 30 seconds later it started the firstboot screen again with the added line NVRAM UPDATE OK and went on to boot ok.its 12 months since i added new ram.

Answer:Nvram Update Ok-bootup sceeen?

Hi So Afraid. I can't give you a complete answer, but will make a couple f observations that might lead to a solution. First the analog/digital signal is generated by a digital monitor when it can't find a signal, and so searches for either an analogue or a digital source until it finds one. This means that during this message display your computer just isn't working.NVRAM isn't the new RAM you installed. NVRAM is Non-Volatile RAM, i.e. it doesn't lose it's data when power is removed, whereas the RAM you installed does lose all it's data - i.e. it is volatile. Non Volatile RAM is the type your BIOS is written to, it's also used in various other parts of the computer.I think that what might be happening is that something is causing the computer to start very slowly. This could be the PSU, motherboard or something else. The only way to find what it is might be to unplug everything from the motherboard except the PSU, processor, graphics card, memory and power switch to see if that speeds things up, and then add a component at a time until you find the culprit.

Yesterday (30th July) I was notified of a new update for Windows XP Home and let it download and install. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of which update it was. It installed and restarted my system but on restarting it wouldn't open windows properly. It reached the blue "windows is now loading" screen and stopped. I left it several minutes and eventually after about 10 min it let me log in and started to give me the desktop but then completely stopped after putting up my desktop wallpaper. The mouse was still working so it hadn't frozen but nothing loaded no matter how long I left it. It would do this everytime I restarted my system. After much messing I managed to scedule a scandisk for the next restart and that seemed to help as I got back into windows. I have now tried doing a system restore to before putting the update on but it is just making the same problem again and I have to try to fix it all over again. I don't know what else to do to try to fix it properly so any suggestions would be welcomed. It seems to be running at the moment but I'm not convinced that everything is as it should be as I've been unable to revert back to before the stupid update. Thanks for any help you can give.

My daughter who lives some distance away from me has a Samsung NP 355V5C Laptop running Windows 8 and the August update has resulted in a complete mess. The laptop will not boot up into Windows at all. On one occasion she was able to see momentarily a "Windows updating 35%" and then back to the black screen. She has been able to access Recovery position by continually pressing the F4 button until Recovery dialogue box displayed. This would appear to give the option to restore to a date of purchase with nothing in between.
Question 1. How can I access the personal data before committing to a complete restore to factory settings?
Question 2. Is there any another option other than 1?
I will be getting the laptop later on this evening and wish to be armed with all options available to me.

I recently rebuilt this computer and added a new SATA HD ? and used my old IDE HD (D & E) as a secondary drive. I have files saved on the desktop of this other OS that I need to access. When I go to the drive and try to open the folder for that old profile I get the message "Access Denied" I have tried to change permissions to gain access but no luck so far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would probably need to disable the Menu and sub menu features to achieve that.

Hello,I own an X1Carbon (latest generation) and so far have been very happy with it. However, recently (possibly due to some driver upgrade?) the notebook shows a behaviour which seriously impacts my productivity.Whenever the speakers have been quiet for only a few minutes, I guess the sound driver is being put into some kind of "sleep mode". As soon as new sounds are being played, it takes the notebook about 5 to 10 seconds until one can actually hear something again. To some, this may be just some annoying behaviour. for me however, it seriously impacts my productivity. As I am blind, I am running a screen reading software, telling me what's on the screen. As long as the sound system is in this "sleep" (or whatever it is) mode, I can't hear the screen reader's feedback. the behaviour happens both with headphones plugged in as well as without. I have already tried looking through Lenovo's Setting Application, switching off anything that sounds like "intelligent" Power Safing. Also, I went through Windows 10's Energy options, unable to finding anything related to the sound output. I would greatly appreciate if someone could share any hints on how this may be fixed.(and yes: I could just have a continuous sound playing in the background, but I'm really looking for a setting to tell any power safing driver to just leave the speakers on at all times). Thanks a lot and best regards!René

bought a computer from cyberpower, you can see the specs in my signature. to make a long story short, about 30-60 seconds after logging into windows xp sp2, my computer becomes very sluggish. When you look at task manager, on the cpu performance tab, both cores are jumping all over the place, and eventually work their way to 50-55% on cpu usage. this has been happening since day one. I did mem test, switched video cards out, including switching from sli to normal. nothing fixes it. I sent back to cyberpower, they kept it for a month, then said it is the mobo, which was a gigabyte k8n sli pro. I upgraded to the asus. got it back, and it still does the same thing. they sent me a new cpu, but it is liquid cooled, and i hear it is real easy to screw that up. any ideas as to what may be the problem before i risk messing this cpu up? oh, and i was trying to switch the hard drive from my old pc to the new one to see if that was the problem, but couldnt get it to boot. so i reattached everything and now, the first core isnt jumping all over the place, just the second core, according to the cpu performance history chart. and also, on the processes tab, system idle is at 99% the whole time it does this. hope i make sense, this is my first post.

As some of you people may know from the hardware section, i have recently built a pc. It is all working fine however according to wisecare it is taking 140-150 seconds to boot up.

To add to this the update to "windows 7 for x64 systems" keeps on failing.

I have a feeling that the failed update is affecting bootup time but why does the update keep failing and how can i fix this?

I have an Equium A60 (PSA67E) around 1 year old. There have been number of problems with this one recently. Firstly there was the overheating problem. The machine would heat up and shuts off by itself without any warning. I tried many options by keeping the cooling ports clear but dint help at all.

Recently I have upgraded my bios to 1.90 version as suggested by Toshiba. I'm still to see overheating until now after bios upgrade.

The most annoying is the display driver which in this case is a ATI radeon mobility 7000 failing. This would cause the display to become oversized and the resolution is very low. It would go by itself when I restart the machine.

Last month I reformatted the machine using Toshiba recovery CD. All went smoothly until I switched on the automatic windows update. The first update comes and I install it and restart machine to let it function. It goes well. The second update comes is installed and as I proceed to restart to let the upgrades functional, it wont boot. The machine keeps on starting again and again without loading OS. The display is the typical Toshiba boot display with the yellow indicator (loader) on the screen and after a while a blue screen comes for a short while (I am unable to read what error message it says) and machine starts booting up again. What can be the problem?

I need to install windows XP SP2 and for that I need to go through updating Windows. What can be the remedy and what about the available display dri... Read more

Answer:My Equium A60 doesnt bootup after Windows update

Hi Gaurav,

From your description of the problem there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with what you have done so far, but I would just like to clarify a few points.

1. After you install the system from the recovery CDs do you install/enable your anti-virus software ?

2. Are you using Windows Update in automatic mode or do you manually select the update process ?

I would recommend that you disable the automatic restart on error (Advanced tab in System properties) so that the system will not attempt to reboot when you get your blue screen error. This will let you see what the error is.

I updated my PC last night, it wasnt a big update or anything and i tried booting it up this morning. It was taking forever to boot so I had the bright idea of restarting it via the power button . Now its stuck on a black screen after the Acer splash. I don't have any recovery disc/usbs. My PC is an Acer running on windows 10 (originally 7). Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a pic.

Answer:Black screen with characters on bootup after update

Hi, you may be lucky if you use a Win 10 boot disk to boot from (iso's freely downloadable - see Tutorial section or MS media creation tool) and run System Restore from the Advanced Recovery options.

Failing that, you might be able to restore the backup registry having booted from a suitable boot medium.

Before the above you might want to make sure you have backups of any important data (e.g. using a boot disk such as Kyhi's, available from the top of the Software and Apps section.

Note: you have won the grand prize: discovering how invaluable disk imaging is- we strongly and repeatedly recommend disk imaging - e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for the images which then allows you to recover your system to a previously working state relatively quickly, even if you have to replace your disk, and also provides a full backup.

I just updated to 8.1 two days ago. I agreed to the update when my computer boot up, without issue, and was forced to reboot immediately (which, by the way, is idiotic. I wanted to do the install at night when I went to bed not lose my only computer for 1.5 hours that were suppose to be spent on volunteer activities because it won't let me delay the install!)

When my computer next booted up it was SLOW. I opened up task manager and it showed me at 100% disk IO, even though non of the programs running used enough disk IO individually to be anywhere close to the 100% mark. Even after all of my programs *finally* finished booting up the disk IO still showed at 100%, but every program on my task manage showed less then 0.3 MB/s and most were at 0.1. Eventually the diso IO goes back to a reasonable level, but I had enough time to search all over google and fail to find any answers before my IO went to 0 so it was hardly immediately. This is substantially slowing my bootup process.

I have checked all the bootup programs and they all look right. a *quick* scan of msconfig bootup (I already use a selective bootup from msconfig) looked right as well. I ran a malware scan and nothing came up. However, I didn't expect any of those to be the problem anyways. My computer was fin when it booted up without 8.1 I used it for 20 minutes visiting the same website I always do, then I was forced to do an install and everything was broken. Long story, but after I wouldn't fudge his taxes went downhill from there and they were cell phone spying on me (25 coincidences) and the IT guy was sexually harassing me. I left there last Jan. and after just switching cell phone carriers/phones two weeks ago and they're no longer able to spy that way, I get a phone call from the IT guy (mind you now it's been almost a yr since I left there) and he didn't leave a message nor did I answer of course. Hi all

PLEASE to anybody who has an UPGRADE version of W7 (NOT THE FULL RETAIL DISK).
Can they please answer the question

Does it check to see if the previous version of Windows is actually ACTIVATED before it does its install stuff.

(I don't care what it *might* say or not say on the MS site. I'm curious to see if you really do have to have an activated version of Windows to use the upgrade disk).

Note I'm not asking if you can do a CLEAN install as you WILL be able to -- for example you have to run the install file from Windows XP initially and then at boot time it will give you the CUSTOM install (Clean) and disable the upgrade on the menu.

Hello and welcome,
Does the partition containing the recovery image still exist on your drive?  I don't know how to use it - if it's still there - but others here may.
I take it you didn't make a recovery flash drive before installing Win 10?  For others who may see your post before it's too late for them:
Methodology to create Recovery Media
You may need to contact support and request (purchase, probabaly) recovery media - which may be a set of DVDs.
Another option would be doing a clean install from downloaded Microsoft media and then manually installing the Lenovo additions:
Create installation media for Windows 8.1
Finally, for others reading this thread: this is at the top of the Windows 10 Tech Preview download page (red line added);

So I had this problem this morning, that is described in the link below, on a customers computer.

There is a fix for this and it's pretty simple. But, couldn't post a reply since it was a closed thread. I know it's an old thread, but for anyone with this problem, here is something to try.

First of all, addressing the "Your System drive is too small or may not exist. Select Restore Complete System to perform a complete system recovery" error when running a Vaio restore. In my case, on a Vaio laptop with Vista. More specifically a VGN-CR320E. The C:\ partition was trashed. And I was able to recover the recovery partition to another drive.

Assuming your hard drive is in fact ok and functioning properly, you will need to make sure that your C:\ partition is set to active. If inactive, it will produce the above error when trying to recover.

Second, make sure it is partitioned and formatted NTFS.

If you try to recover now, with your C:\ partition formatted NTFS and set as active, you may get another error during the recovery. Something to the effect of "Could not obtain the target drive letter".

This may seem a little odd, but, it's how Sony designed it. The recovery process checks the C:\ partition for a Windows folder. If it does not find one, it will give the above error about target drive. Simply create a new folder on C:\ named Windows. In my c... Read more

I recently upgraded my motherboard and CPU. No issues even though going from Gigabyte to Asrock. Windows recognised everything other than those items which needed an Asrock driver.

Windows needed activating however. I was able to type in my old Win 8 upgrade product key. Windows was now activated.

In the new year I'll probably buy an M.2 SSD and put my current SSD in my laptop. Obviously I'll have to reinstall Windows 10. Will my Win 8 product key still work on a clean W10 install even though it was an upgrade from Win 7 / Vista? Or will I have to install Vista - 8 - 10 and reinstall 10 clean again?

Answer:W10 upgrade product key form prev. version

Once windows 10 is activated it will stay activated through a "digital entitlement", a hardware hash kept on their servers. So with just the change of a SSD, a clean install should activate automatically.

After this month's windows update for my xp sp3 system, I've determined that any of the several .net framework updates cause my system to be unresponsive until alg.exe - application layer gateway - runs followed immediately by the exit of the windows genuine advantage program.

Until these occur, programs like firefox (which can be launched as soon as my normal desktop appears) are unresponsive to any menu or button clicks. This behavior is not new, it's just that after these updates there's an extra (approximately) 2 minute interval on boot up that wasn't there before. There's no cpu activity during this delay and even the start button is unresponsive during this wait time.

Researching alg.exe, it seems to be something that 3rd party software might connect to related to internet or windows firewall. There are a couple of other system programs that run for an instant just as alg shows up. I'm monitoring it with procexp.exe from MS (launched from the startup folder).

Individually un-installing the .net updates did not restore prior behavior. Only rolling back to my nightly image backups restored my system. I had to do several rollbacks to find out which updates cause the problems - and it was at least a few of the .net updates (like kb2656407, kb2604110, or kb2604121) while all the other updates caused no problems. Except for these .net updates, I've installed every other update for windows xp.

i'm running win7pro64 and am experiencing what looks to be random bsod's.

i've updated my profile to hold all the specs for the machine. this box was previously used with vista64ultimate with no issues for over a year. i am doing no overclocking and running everything at normal specs.

i ran my first win7 install 2 weeks ago and have had multiple bsod's daily since then.

i've had them happen when watching a movie file in wmc, watching live tv in wmc, watching recorded tv in wmc, watching a show on hulu desktop (not in wmc) and while the computer is doing nothing but just idling...

i've reinstalled win7 multiple times. installing from vista64ultimate using the "clean install" method, installing from win7 using "clean install" and installing from a bootable dvd after formatting the drive. same result each time.

i've tried letting win7 pick all my drivers, and i've also tried to manually download/install all drivers, but the results seem to be the same.

i've run the windows memory diagnostic and it came back with no errors.

here's the whocrashed report from the 2 bsod's that happened tonight, and i've attached the dmp files from both of those bsod's.

thanks for any help on this, as i'm starting to pull my hair out
please let me know if there is any more info that is needed about my system or the errors to help figure this out.

in the meantime, i'll attach anymore dmp files if (when) i encounter any more bsod's.

Answer:random bsod's on prev stable vista machine

after browsing around here and on other forums, i've read a couple posts about people having problems with hauppauge's tuner drivers, even the latest win7 drivers provided by hauppauge.

so on a whim, i removed my HVR 1600 tuner card and ran everything i could try, except for live tv.

no crashes or bsod's as of yet, but that was only an hour or 2 of testing/watching. it has run multiple hours before (with the tuner card installed) only to crash repeatedly in hour 4. for example, watch a 3 hour football game on live tv just fine, only to have it bsod during the last 45 seconds of the game (now that's annoying), and then again after that when trying to watch a movie...

hopefully removing (and then replacing) the tuner card will solve the issues, but i'm honestly not too optimistic, since random troubleshooting usually isn't the best method.

i'll post back with an update either way, and if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to post.

PC NOW VERY SLOW...Followed advice from my previous new problem related?

I am now having new problems. I didn't know if I should post here or in Malware Forum. My computer is now running slower than ever. Especially start-up and very slow when I open Mozilla...takes forever. Touch Pad scroll is acting odd.

I think I've really screwed something up and I don't want to download any other programs to try and fix issue without some expert advice. This is my new computer and I'm now sick and scared. What've I done:cry

Here is what I have done...I'm including anything I think could have caused this:

I downloaded PC-Decrapifier & ExterminateIt. I didn't use ExterminateIt. Downloaded CCleanerSlim to prepare for registry clean.
I followed advice from thread link above and got rid of files:
Searched for all AOL and deleted those files (the ones that Decrapifier did not get).
I deleted some other files in Desktop\(my name)\Documents & Desktop\(my name)\ pictures, zip, exe files from programs I downloaded. I also deleted a video.
Ran Registry cleaner, Restarted

After doing the previous it came to my attention, that even after uninstalling MagicDVDcopier & MagicDVDripper (via. control panel) & registry clean, restart... they were still in Program Files(x86) and DeskTop(hidden). So, I deleted these files.

Cleaned registry again. ... Read more

Yesterday my PC was infected with the Live Security Virus. It's an HP desktop running Win Vista Home Premium.

I was able to download AntiMalwarebytes and run it to remove the Live Security Virus.

Afterwards MSE would not run, so I uninstalled it, and reinstalled.

After rebooting, MSE detected the sirefef.ah and sirefef.r viruses, but before it can clean them the PC gives a warning that it had a critical error, and will restart in a minute. It then restarts.

I tried downloading TDSSkiller only a flash drive on this PC (my laptop), plugged it into the infected PC and ran it, but it didn't find anything. Sure enough, it then shut down again.

MSE will detect the viruses, but doesn't have enough time to deal with them.

I'd love some help! What should I try next?

Answer:Infected with sirefef.ah and sirefef.r after Live Security Update - reboots every minute

Ignore this for now, I've taken the PC into a local shop. I just don't have the time right now to figure this out on my own. I will post any solutions they tell me.

Thanks anyway, I'll be back for other issues I'm sure!

So i returned to my work computer after lunch and the resolution had been changed to 800x600, very odd.
Now i have spent 2 hours trying to get back my resolution to the 1680x1050 that is was before but i still can not choose anything higher then 1600x1200 under Screen Resolution settings. The one with the correct ratio i can choose is 1280x960 and i'd like to bigger one back.

I have updated the driver for my graphics card (ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics accoridng to Device Manager). I have updated the driver for the Monitor (HP LE2201w), but the monitor still shows up as Generic Non-PnP Monitor under Device Manager and now i am out of ideas... I really have no idea what the hell happened when i was gone.
(And yes, the computer was locked so it wasn't someone else changing something)

Uninstalling the driver for the Generic device does nothing, it pops back up again after installing the correct display driver, or after a restart. It's like the display driver i downloaded from HP is not being installed, no idea why.

I thought i'd post this and the boot into the bios and prod around see if i can find something, because at the moment i've lost all hope...

Answer:Resolution got changed over lunch, cannot revert back to prev. setting

I don't think monitors require drivers. I know you said you uninstalled the driver for the 'Generic Device', but have you tried your graphics driver? It could either be the driver or a third party software messing with the setup.

I'm curious, run a DXDiag by typing into Start Menu Search or typing DXDIAG in Run Command. Check the Display tab for any errors.

Monitor screen goes black
I see the initial start up screen and then the monitor goes blank. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to force safe mode as my keyboard doesn't respond until later in the boot up process (new keyboard) and by then the screen is blank.
Old keyboard is beyond use so can't go back to that!
Any suggestions?

Applied malware-bytes which removed the Live Security Platinum.. continued to have very slow browser and constant weblink redirecting. Downloaded and ran VIPRE antivirus and SuperANTIspyware. Did 3 full scans and each time failed to remove all but one trojan > (Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT). Trojan continues to be detected by VIPRE and repeatedly asks to reboot after previous reboot.

I also keep receiving two RunDLL errors upon computer startup. Both state :"There was a problem starting.. ..this specified module could not be found."). Used FixExec dowbload and Wise Registry Cleaner without luck. (I hope the dll issue belongs here in this post). No clue, help appreciated!

Hi,I have a fairly barebones Windows 7 laptop that was just previously infected with My Security Shield (from a website ad? I wasn't downloading anything at the time) and now seems to be infected with a hijacker after removal. I followed the removal instructions here and I seemed to be fixed. Afterwards I upgraded Firefox from ver.3.5 to the current release 10.0.2. I primarily use Firefox, but also use Chrome (17.0.963.56 m) - and both seem to be infected now. When I try to pull up websites, most of the time they work. Otherwise I get:- redirect to buzzcrazy- blank page with expected URL (eg. hitting enter or reloading the page makes it appear per ususal- blank page with unexpected URL (eg. Read more

I have a Sony Vaio S series (8GB RAM, i7, 2.9Ghz), with win10 tech prev.
When I launch a game (like assassin's creed 4), the game runs very smoothly for, say, the first 50 - 60 seconds, and then the frame rate drops to almost half.
Is it because of the Windows 10 tech prev?

Answer:Is Windows 10 tech prev slowing down Gaming Performance of my laptop?

Yupp, I can confirm that.. I changed my game to run under w7 compatibility, but haven't played yet, so not sure if that had any effect at all

Answer:My WP Running dev prev 8.1 just totally went to static, is a hard reset my only option?

You can try that or a better course might be the Lumia Care tool and reflash your phone.
