Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

Question: Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

I recently just changed my Motherboard, Processor, Ram, and Power supply.

MotherBoard: ASUS STRIX Z27OH Gaming MotherBoard
Processor: Intel Core i5-7600K CPU 3.8GHz
RAM: 16GB Corsair

After putting my PC together and getting everything up and running, My disc usage has been in the upper 90s.

Another thing to note is that on startup I get a popup saying only "EAccessViolation" With only okay as an option. When I click okay nothing happens.

I am updating windows10 right now as much as I can.

Any Insite on this problem would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.

Hello guys,

I'm new to this forum, but I'm desperate for help on my computer.
I installed a new GPU (MSI GTX 750 OC edition), and after that (after every driver installed), i suddenly got 2GB of RAM (out of 6GB RAm) for hardware. ("reserved memory").

I have tried everything, literally EVERYTHING (I guess) except for a clean install of Windows 10.

Can someone tell me what to do? If you need any information about my computer just say it.
Thanks

Answer:Disk Usage Always at 100% and 2GB Hardware Reserved RAM

It sounds to me as if the GPU settings are requesting an additional 2GB of system RAM which is then reserved for it. Otherwise it might be a BIOS setting that is reserving additional RAM for the GPU.

Post a screenshot of the window that opens when you type about in the search box on the taskbar and select about your PC.

Then post a screenshot of the memory section in the performance Tab of Task Manager (right click on the taskbar to select Task Manager)

Dual Boot install promised to roommate for New Year on an eMachine t5234 w/ 2gb RAM and Athlon Dual Core 400 CPU, finding heavy and CPU usage at 100% constantly. Some of this seems to trace to communications for Mail app syncing (he likes the new Mail app) and all the reporting going back to MS. I also see the Maintenance app regularly in the mix. Can any of these be turned off or mitigated besides uninstalling Mail App?

HD tests Good, Disk Check normal, boot defragged and optimized with Puran.

Here are Resource Monitor screenies and specs:

This PC runs WIn7 fine so I wonder if this may be due to all the reporting and maintenance running instead of pretty low specs. Opinions or suggestions?

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

Hi all,

My old trusty laptop of 3 years has recently showed some weird symptoms.

I am able to use it normally till about 30 minutes or so (If I'm lucky I get it to function for a longer time), before everything hangs.

Display still shows, and during the initial stages of the freeze, the cursor still moves around but can't click on anything.

Wait further, the cursor stops moving and then I have to do a hard switch off with the power button.

May I know what the issue is?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:OS hangs after approximate half an hour of usage.. Hardware or Software issue?

Possible overheating?

i saw that it's a common problem so i looked up some solutions and tried the following:

1- i changed the registry - ?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management? and changed ?ClearPageFileAtShutDown? value to 1
2- adjusted windows 10 to "best performance" in system settings
3- i disabled many startup programs
4- i defragemented the C drive
5- uninstalled all the programs that i could
6- I disabled "Show me tips about Windows"
7- changed the power settings profile

NONE OF THOSE WORKED. PLEASE HELP!

Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason.  I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes.   My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

exactly as title, curious as to if there is a software that allows me to monitor disk usage?

say for example, using firefox browsing internet, or during encoding a video with movie maker or playing games, I want to see the reads/writes made by those softwares in both random and sequential read/writes on targeted disk.

Answer:A program to monitors other software on disk usage?

Some tools within Hiren's BootCD may help you with what you want.

Two tools to note are Process Monitor and Process Explorer. For Process Explorer you can click on the top right graph for the hard drive and it will display much more detailed information about read/write.

Hello, I have been trying to overcome this issue of 100% disk and CPU usage for quite some time before but no solution has worked. It is especially bad when i start my laptop or when i turn it on after hibernation. I tried using this https://chaladi.me/2013/10/11/how-to-fix-windows-8-100-disk-usage-issue/and i have also resetted my laptop to factory version so now its empty, but it is still facing this issue.  How can I stop this problem? Much thanks!!

Hi,

History
My senior neighbour was having problems using her computer.  I am not an expert user of one, but know the basics. She had her copmuter online with NO protection- nothing, and 100% of cpu usage was showing along with 80% + of hardware usage and nothing could be done with it.

Actions Taken

I put it into safe mode, installed:

Spybot search and destory - free
Malware bytes - free
Super anit spyware - free
Emisoft anti malware - free
Avast -free

Ran the programs and it found all kinds of malware including several trojans. I didn't keep track of what they were.  Running these programs took several weeks, because her life is all medical appointments so I had to do it between medical appointments, at her place

I told her NOT to use her computer and to call me when I can come over next. It was my INTENTION to update the programs and re-run them in safe mode.

Instead she calls me and says the computer is slow again and not working. She had been using the comptuer online with no protection again. Even though I told her there was still stuff on her computer.

I went over there and re-ran everything in safe mode and this time it didn't help and there is no way to update those programs.

An observation:   when her computer was on, and basicly all seized up, the internet lights on the moden were looking like the lights on a christmas tree, like there was a lot of activitiy.    Zombie... Read more

Hi, I'm having an issue that has almost conflicting parameters.

Every 15-30 seconds or so (though it can be every few seconds or once every 10 minutes) my FPS will plummet and my CPU usage will suddenly drop dramatically. This is confusing to me because I'd think that normally FPS would drop when resources are capped out, but apparently not.

I'm on Windows 10 64-bit and this has been going on for about a week. It isn't game specific, though I've only tested on Dota 2 and League of Legends, I don't think it's an issue with the programs. I've attached a screenshot of Dota 2 with the fps shown and Task Manager's Resource tab. The fan also goes crazy, which doesn't make sense since supposedly the CPU is being used less.

I know this probably isn't a lot to diagnose off of, but could I have some tips for the types of tests I should run and things I should look for?

Hello all,

I'm having some problems with my computer. It frequently pauses, or stutters, especially when using the internet. I've found this problem to be most problematic when playing World of Warcraft online, but also when juts checking a few internet pages, or even when not using the internet at all. When I'm just doing normal routine, Outlook, or Mozilla will freeze for a bit, nothing will move, then it will all seem to catch up. When playing WOW, my character will freeze, music will loop, then it will go forward. I've tried this with multiple internet connection cards, and using both Comcast internet and Sprint Mobile Broadband, so I don't really think it's actually the internet connection, it's just worse when using the internet.

I've attached a spec sheet and a HJT log. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I suppose I should say hi first. Hello. I'm having a bit of a problem with my computer. I'm running WinXP Media Center Edition with SP2 and after getting rid of a holiday season trojan/malware/spyware fiesta from my computer I'm now experiencing huge slow down which, as far as me and my antivirus (Avast 4.8 Home Edition) can tell nothing is wrong. But I'm having High CPU usage from a Svchost.exe file and System Idle Processes. Each of them using 50% constantly according to Process Explorer.

I also feel I should tell that there was a Registry Booster involved in trying to fix my computer. That might have had something to do with this too. Any idea what could have went wrong?

Answer:High CPU usage causing frequent crashes?

Hello Mojinr

Svchost.exe is often used by malware so I think you still have remains of the infection on your system.

We cannot help you with malware removal in this forum.
Please read ?Virus/Trojan/Spyware Removal Help ? and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information in the Virus Help Forum
If you cannot complete any step, just miss it out and do what you can, but be sure to include this information in your post.
Please ensure that you create a new thread in the Virus Help Forum; not back here in this one.

Please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Alright, so here's the lowdown:

This started yesterday, and before this began my laptop ran normally and I like to game a lot. I use my laptop mainly for playing League of Legends, and the occasional web browsing. I have been running my laptop nonstop for the past couple of weeks or so, as a rough estimate. The night of the day before yesterday (which was this past Wednesday), I decided to put my laptop to sleep. The following afternoon on Thursday, I turned on my laptop right after coming home from work. I suddenly noticed my Internet was going slower than usual, so I ran some tests on Pingtest.net. My results were 1/5 - 1/3 packet loss, and highly variable pings and jitters. After some time passed, the BSOD came up. Frustration set in, and decided to just restart it. After rebooting, it started happening about every 45min to every hour. I decided to reboot to my Windows 8 Release Preview that I have partitioned on my drive. I haven't used this OS in quite a while, so I thought this would ameliorate the problem. Nope, it didn't. I switched back to Win7 and decided to do a System Restore to this past Wednesday. It didn't work, so I went to restore it further back, and that didn't work either. And now, I'm here. I would love some insight on this problem. It's frustrating and annoying to keep seeing this. This is my first time posting on these forums, so I hopefully followed the protocols on here correctly. If not, I'd like to know any mistakes I have made, any important inf... Read more

I’m having an ongoing problem with frequent, short system “lags”. By this I mean my PC will momentarily freeze up for 2-10 seconds, and then unfreeze and continue as normal. This happens anywhere from once every 20-30 seconds to once every 5 minutes (although more frequent is the most common).

This all began a week ago. We had suffered a thunderstorm while I wasn’t home and lost power. My PC had been on at the time. It booted up fine, however.

The next day, though, when I attempted to boot it up, it got stuck on the initial BIOS screen for 15+ minutes. I had to hold in the power switch and try again. After a second failed boot, I turned it off, unplugged, and started testing things. I reseated all of the RAM and tried booting with each stick independently. I checked to make sure I had no blown capacitors on the mobo. All fans were working as normal (and I’d last blown it out maybe a week earlier).  After performing all of these checks, I tried one last time to boot it up and the computer booted fine.

However, since that time I’ve had these reoccurring lag problems. As I’m writing this, I’ve experienced maybe 6 “freezes” since the beginning of my post.

When the lag occurs, one or more windows will freeze and show “Not Responding” in the title bar. The mouse is still responsive (to movement – I can’t click anything), and audio doesn’t always cut out. I̵... Read more

My computer has been acting weird for the past 2 months. I think it started after I installed a driver for an xbox one controller, but I am not sure if I am remembering correctly.

Anyway, when I use my computer for prolonged periods of time, the memory usage tends to near 100% even if I am not really using any programs. When I open task manager it is clear that the memory being used does not add up to the 8gb of ram that is available. Usually this would result in a BSOD if I did not reset my computer. This is an example of my task manager after prolonged PC use http://imgur.com/a/rovZF.

Also I think the BSOD error message was system_service_exemption, not 100% sure of this though.
Starting today, however, it seems as if my computer is starting to BSOD every couple of hours.

Attached are my dump files, also my specs should be listed in my profile

I have run Malware/virus scans in the past but nothing has turned up.

Any insight or input would be greatly appreciated. Just let me know if you need anymore information.

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Windows 8 on my laptop (I've named my laptop Romulus for future reference in this thread). First off, let me give you a brief history on Romulus' journey thus far:

1.) Bought pre-built from ACER with Windows 8 64-bit installed.
2.) After playing around with it for a bit, I formatted the C drive (deleting all partitions) and installed Windows 7.
3.) Hoping to test out the new Windows 8.1, I reinstalled Windows 8 (a clean install from Microsoft this time... not the original bundled version from ACER). I have yet to install 8.1.

This is where I've noticed a few problems. Specifically, my CPU and Disk usage keep spiking to 100% for no apparent reason. Literally right after booting Romulus, before running any programs/apps, I see these spikes. I boot up, go straight to the desktop, fire up Task Manager, and watch sadly as the performance graphs tease me with those tall lines. The CPU spikes only last for a second or two and usage generally stays pretty low, but I'd still like to know why it's jumping like that. Disk usage spikes to 99-100% more frequently and stays there a bit longer. I've noticed perhaps very slight performance problems and some mouse lag, but I haven't been able to prove a correlation here.

Regarding drivers, these problems arose without any drivers installed (straight Windows 8 installation). Thinking the obvious, I installed all of Romulus' drivers listed on the ACER web page for this model, but the problems persist... Read more

Couple of ideas till the brains show up with better ideas :-) Find and shut off indexing and see if it stops. If not go to task manager and shut down running items one at a time and see what happens.

It seems no matter what i am trying to do, computer always uses hard drive. I have Internet Explorer 8.0 open with 4-5 tabs and everytime i switch tabs it takes at least 30 seconds to switch and all this time hard drive is loading. Or for example i opened tab with YouTube video fully loaded and paused it. After a while i return to it to resume playing and then this loading starts. And this does not happen with Internet Explorer only. It seems computer does not use memory or maybe 1Gb is not enough? What is strange is that when application is loaded, it responds well for some time but later as time passes it starts to load slow and computer seems to use hard drive a lot. Please take a look at my Task Manager below:What do you find strange here? Is it too many handles? Maybe Page File is too high? Here is a screenshot of processes running sorted from processes taking most memory to least:Laptop Specs:Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz1Gb Ram80Gb Hard DriveGeForce Go7400

Answer:Slow Performance And Frequent Hard Drive Usage

Sort the processes tab in task manager on the cpu column and see if some process is spiking. If not, try a clean boot and work backwards (Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming process, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.)

Hi...In addition my HJT log below, here are some descriptions of my problem.I've been experiencing quite a number of computer (laptop) problems lately. My PC is running slow because of frequent 100% CPU usage (at least twice a day). In addition, in normal operations, it takes longer now to open programs (even MS Word) than before.I've got a resource usage meter (Freemeter.exe) on my taskbar which shows CPU usage. Everytime it turns red (which shows CPU usage is 100%), i open the task manager and see what's eating up that much.Usually, no single process would consume the entire 100%. Among the processes which consume CPU include:explorer.exe (username), winamp.exe (username), firefox.exe (username), explorer.exe (username), Freemeter.exe (username), acs.exe (SYSTEM)ACU.exe (username)svchost.exe (SYSTEM), system (SYSTEM), This usually happens when I'm running winamp (v5.31) and firefox(v2.0), which I do most of the time. When this happens, i usually end winamp and/or firefox and somehow CPU would drop down and average at the 30-50's level for some more seconds, until finally down to 0%.But still, there are other cases when no applications are open and CPU usage is soaring at 30-60's level, which usually should not be. The processes listed above are some of those which consume this. However, there are also instances where dumprep.exe (sometimes 2 processes of it at the same time) consumes the entire 100%. I don't know what exactly is causing my PC to behave undesirably this way, ... Read more

Hi mykz78,Before we do any more scans for malware, let's do a quick check of your resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. Post them to a reply here.I also need the following numbers. Click Start, My Computer, and then Right-click on your C:\ drive and select Properties. Write down the following numbers: Used space, free space, capacity. Post those numbers to your reply also.Dave

Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3 A few months ago I started a thread about the same problem. Turns out I had way too many stuff running in the background under "Logon," so disabling some of them solved the issue. However, now it's back and greater than ever. I figured it might just be with certain high memory-usage programs I'm using, but that is clearly not the case. Basically, when my computer decides to go into freeze/unresponsive mode, whatever program I'm using just halts. Heck, I can't even ctrl+alt+delete. 1-2 minutes later, it unfreezes, only to do it again a few seconds later most of the times. It's really frustrating and I want to know what's behind it. I've already tried all sorts of scans, disk cleanup, checked to see if there's any more startup programs I can disable..... still nothing. Thanks in advance!

Hi. I recently purchased my laptop a couple months ago and I frequently (more and more as time goes on) have internet explorer go really slow and become unresponsive. (Not linked to any particular website from what I can tell) I'm not sure if other programs are affected by this because I primarily use this laptop for internet access. I also experience difficulty shutting down sometimes and have to select to force shutdown because whatever program is running is fighting the task manager or whatnot from ending the process.

I read the introduction thread stating what to do before posting below are the results of the hijackthislog, DDS logs (I ran it although I have no idea what a script blocker is or how to disable them. Please let me know if it matters I didn't run into any problems), and GMER log.

Answer:Solved: Frequent unresponsiveness with internet explorer

You provided a very long list here but there is one important piece of information that's missing: How unresponsive IE8 on your laptop compared to Firefox on the same laptop?

This can help isolate the problem to whether it is in your system+connection or something specific to IE8 itself.

Howdy! I believe I've been having trouble with some Malware. I've been trying to solve the problem myself over the past few days (which has included doing some browsing of this site and use of tools recommended), but unfortunately I've had no luck. So I decided to hop on to see if you all might be able to lend me a hand! As mentioned above, I've used a few tools so far to try and either locate or fix the problems I've been having. So far TDSSKiller and Avast have proved fruitless with nothing found during scans. Malwarebytes has been useful for alerting me to outgoing pings, but again, Scans have proved ineffective.

Also as I've mentioned above, I've seen several new processes (some with multiple instances running) pop up since the initial lock up on New Year's eve. These processes include: logagent.exe *32 (never more than 1 instance), dvdupgrd.exe *32 (several), dpnsvr.exe (several), and wiaacmgr.exe. I'm not sure if any of these appearing should actually be cause for alarm, but since they've only appeared after I began having troubles I figured it might be best to mention them.

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance!

I've had this problem with abnormally high cpu usage when I have no programs running. I like to edit video and play an occasional game and it prevents me from doing anything smoothly, even while meeting necessary requirements. I have used process explorer and come to find out it's due to "hardware interrupts". I have no idea what could be causing this.

My specs are ...

Windows XP Home Edition SP2
AMD Sempron 3500+
2 ghz
2 gig ram
geforce 7200 GS

Answer:85-100% Cpu Usage, Hardware Interrupts

Rather than have me try to explain...take a look at the following links:http://homepages.uel.ac.uk/u0219091/Interrupt.htmhttp://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread7297.html I agree with Comment #2.The best advice I can give is: Check Event Viewer for errors, in particular driver/hardware items.I don't think I've ever seen this one, so I have no experience to draw on...and I believe that troubleshooting these at the normal user level is probably going to prove impossible. The one thing I can think of that might be involved is a system which needs to have chkdsk or defrag run on it...and I always tend to start my hardware suspicions with a good check of the hard drive.Louis

Hello Everyone,

I've come for help. Recently my computer has been very slow, with CPU usage often at or just below 100%.

I recently downloaded and installed Process Explorer and I've determined what seems to be causing the problem: Whenever the CPU is required to perform a process, it seems that hardware interrupts use from 40-90% of the capacity of the processor, effectively slowing the computer to a crawl .

I've also run through the 5-Step list but did not pick up anything.

Thanks in advance for any assitance,

Interrupt

I have an HP Pavilion dv6830us Laptop with Windows XP SP3 installed. I have updated my driver to the latest versions and also did a BIOS update. I experience hardware interrupts only when running a game. If I browse the internet, stream movies, download files all is well on my machine. The interrupts only seems to occur when a game in running, it can be 5 min or even an hour after I start playing. I have to do a reboot or standby my system for things to be back to normal.

This is a clean install on Windows XP so viruses and malware should not be a problem. I believe it has to be a driver issue. I have dual boot of Windows 7 on this PC that runs completely fine. The game plays "okay" without interrupts (less FPS then in XP) but no CPU spikes.

The following is a report generated with KrView.

My hardware ram usage is 2310mb?! im pretty sure this isn't right, ive asked my friends how much there's is and all of theres is around 250mb
Im using a HP pavillion dv6-3130us laptop with 4gb of ram and a AMD n640 II processor (2.9Ghz dual core)

Answer:Hardware ram usage = 2310mb

Hardware reserved is generally being used by the graphics chip in laptops. You can reduce the amount in the bios on most occasions.

There is a tweak that might also help windows to take advantage of more of your memory. It involves messing with the bootmgr though and I'm going to have to do a little reading before I suggest that method on a laptop as the hardware reserve is different with them than a desktop.

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

When you experience or encounter strange behavior, always check for new, unknown or suspicious processes in Task Manager. Most of the processes in Task Manager will be legitimate as shown in these links.List of common system processes found in XP's Task ManagerCommon system processes found in XP's Task ManagerTop System ProcessesAnytime you come across a suspicious file or one that you do not recognize, search the name using Google or the following databases:BC's Startup Programs DatabaseSystemLookup StartupList IndexFile Research CenterProcessLibrary.comDetermining whether a file is malware or a legitimate process sometimes depends on the location (path) it is running from. One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file. However, it then places itself in a different location on your computer. Another techinique is for the process to alter the registry and add itself as a Startup program so that it can run automatically each time the computer is booted. My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!
(I've tried leaving my homegroup to see... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all!

I am fairly ignorant when it comes to PCs, so I finally broke down and bought a Cyberpower PC off of Newegg for my online gaming. I noticed my first BSOD shortly after purchasing it, but thought nothing of it since I had no idea what it was. Then about 6 months ago, they started to get worse and more frequent.

The issue tends to come and go, but finally I am at the point where I simply cannot take it anymore.

For a brief history:

I reformatted my C: drive yesterday. I used my provided Win7 CD and installed my Motherboard drivers via the disc I was also provided. I then went to ATI's website and downloaded the latest drivers for my video card (ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series, 11.5).

I then proceeded to allow Windows to update itself. It seems like I have gotten most of the windows updates out of the way, but as I speak I am currently downloading another one that just popped up.

I am STILL getting BSODs. Whether it be while playing Rift, WoW, or simply browsing the internet or doing miniscule tasks, they just keep happening. Usually it is associated with an annoying sound (the sound looping into just an awful noise) along with lines running across the screen, quickly followed by a BSOD doing a memory dump.

Again, this is all after reformatting. I am not sure what all my Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 folder will contain, so I will include the following 3 dump logs:

I've been experiencing some serious sluggishness lately, and browsed around and found that a process called Hardware Interrupts is frequently taking up all my CPU usage. The only changes I've made lately are installing World of Warcraft patch 3.02, changing my mouse (which I changed back), and reinstalling Steam. All the previous answers to this issue dont seem to apply in my case... and I'm in need of some help. Worst part is, I just bought this computer off of my friend, and already it's messing up. Here's what my Process Explorer looks like right now, with almost no processes running.

Any advice would help.
I'm currently running Window XP, not sure of all my specs for this computer tho...

Answer:Hardware Interrupts causing 80%+ CPU usage

Oh, I also ran SmitFraudFix in case it was some kind of reg error.

Hi, I recently bought a computer (8 months ago) for my university research and occasional gaming. Its a very fast i7 core based system. I have had no problems whatsover up until last week (Please see system specs)

I recently received a free upgrade to windows 7 because I purchased my pc after june 2009 where you get a special offer from the store. I really like the new OS. Its elegant, fast and looks good. I have had windows 7 for about 1 month. However, just last week I noticed the CPU usage was between 25-30%. Core 3 was completey loaded while others are partially coping. Three are still parked at idle (see attached) . The PC still runs fast but I have noticed slight performance degradation occasionally as the CPU load fluctuates. In addition, whenever I restart the system appears to HANG, after a delay it resumes its normal cycle and the OS starts.

I therefore proceeded to try every trick in the PC book (including hitting the desk!) to try and resolve the problem. This is what I have tried so far as well as the facts to this point. The bold points are the problem areas. Are they related?? I wonder.
Memory test (OK)
CPU temp (OK)
Graphics card temp (OK)
Drivers (Up to date however the driver scan reports and error on the keyboard and mouse not being fully installed or bad ACPI driver error)
Ran in safe mode. Problem still there.
Turned off all unneccessary services and strartup tools. Problem still there.

Any takers guys?

Will pay ?50 through paypal if anybody can sort this out, its an annoying problem. Just to update when I plugged the computer in and turned the switch at the socket the computer turned on straight away. I get the feeling the signs are pointing more to hardware than drivers.

Hope you can help me.

How can the actual exceed the max quota? I deleted all previous restore points, and did a disk cleanup, but nothing changes.

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks

For over about a month now my DSL internet has been dropping randomly. It disconnects completely for a few seconds to fifteen minutes, then picks back up. This happens usually every twenty or so minutes, it's very random, so this is just a mode. The speed itself is not affected (when it's on, it's fine). I've been able to determine that the reason is somewhere on my desktop.

It's a HP Envy with intel i7 3.40 GHz. About a year and three months old, and using windows 8. I typically use google chrome for browsing, only occasionally firefox. I am connected to my internet wirelessly, which is broadcasted from the router a floor beneath me. The router is plugged into a phone jack, shared with the house phone (no problems with the phone what-so-ever). Tbaytel is my provider, and I use Kaspersky antivirus. Network details; Speed-72.0 mbps. Sent-13,936,*** and counting. Received- 244,015,*** and counting. Security type is WPA2-Personal, Encryption type is AES and we have a security key set up (That we recently changed to see if it would help, and of course it didn't).

This is what's scary;

Processes under the task manager brought up nothing, but looking at the Wi-fi under the Performance tab showed that something is definitely going on. The amount of Wi-fi usage spikes HUGE amounts! But at the time I took this screenshot, I was only running an antivirus full scan (which turned up nothing), google chrome on this site, and had both the task ... Read more

Answer:Internet cutting out from MASSIVE usage, but usage not accounted for.

About your new router...
How long have you been using it or since when did you got it?
How long has it been opened? Have you tried powercycling it? (Turning it off and then on)

Also, Have you tried testing it while your laptop is directly plugged in on your router with an ethernet cable? (Try speedtest.net)

Does this happen to other of your computers or device?
Does Tbaytel do line testing when you called them?

Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

Answer:G510 SATA disk on Controller 0 Port unknown, IQRL not less or equal errors plus 100% disk usage

Maybe you can have someone analyze dump files and figure out what's causing this issue.  You can wait for one of the staff to reply or you can ask at Microsoft Answers as well.

I was just wondering... is there a program or something that gives you numbers of power usage from each peice of hardware in your PC?

Poop... i'm starting to think i put this in the wrong forum... sowwie!

Answer:How do you find out power usage of computer hardware?

It can't be done using software because of the lack of sensors (on your hardware) that can be used to monitor the current supplied to each piece of hardware.

I used HP Pavilion G4-2216TU, 2Gb DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 4000, and Windows 8 Pro 32 bit, x64 processor.
The usable memory only 935 Mb, fewer than hardware-reserved that take 1,1 Gb of memory.

Is that normal ? that hardware-reserved took more memory rather than usable ??
please if any explanation for what reason they do that ?

I've check the BIOS, no remapping setting that I can use for.
can I remapping / reduce those hardware-reserved usage in such other way ?
or how can i increase my usable memory close to installed RAM ?
I've not done any change or upgrade since I bought that new laptop, and its seem memory-load is too busy
(I've check with the performance-monitor).

please any assistant will be appraciate.
looking for your replies.

thanks, best regards.

Answer:how to reduce hardware-reserved memory usage ?

Some of it is probably used by video. On the other hand 2GB of memory is just too little for today's computers.

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP pavilion dv4-2045dx.  My hard drive is partitioned and I am dual-booting with Linux Mint in the other partition.  Both operating systems were working fine for over a year until a few months ago.

A few months ago I started getting blue screens in Windows 7 with increasing frequency.

Now, in Windows 7 I am getting frequent blue screens, usually within 5 or 10 minutes of startup, to the point where I can't even use the computer.  I also sometimes just will get a hard freeze during, or after startup.  Sometimes, the computer doesn't even turn on at all, and my num-lock and caps-lock lights flash 4-times in a repeated pattern with a black screen.  According to the HP website this indicates a problem with the graphics card, but it only happens intermittently.  Sometimes, after booting up, I will get a Windows 7 message that says the graphics driver has crashed, but has recovered.  Typically, I will get a blue screen or a hard lockup within 10 minutes of this message.

In Linux Mint, I will often get a hard freeze within 10 minutes of startup, or it will stall during the boot process.

Since I am having similar problems in both operating systems, I am wondering if this is definitely a hardware issue or if there are viruses/rootkits/etc. that could infect both OS simultaneously.

I am running AVG in Windows 7 and it is up to date.  A couple months ago, something happened where it ha... Read more

Hi, I'm new here and I'm not good about any of these so please be detail.
My problem started when I installed a software that required me to use daemon tools. I did, eventhough I don't really know how it works (I just click and click). It is something about mounting and stuff. So I did, and the installation went okay.

After the next restart, windows started to find missing hardwares and asks me to install it, all 3 or 4 of them. I didn't at first, and realized my cpu usage gone to 50-60% without running anything. So I browsed forums, and it's not because of DMA reverted to PIO or stuff. I downloaded Process Explorer and noticed the hardware interrupts are the cause of this high cpu usage. I checked device manager, and found out that under the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, I have multiple channels. Before this, I only have 1 primary channel, 1 secondary channel and 1 standard dual channel PCI IDE controller but now I have 2 for each channel I stated. I suspect this is the problem, but I don't know how to deal with it, and I googled it, nothing similar ever came up.

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling and updating the drivers. Sometimes the hardware interrupts disappear and I don't know why, but the next restart will trigger the problem all over again.

I really don't know what to do and I hope someone could help me.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Multiple IDE channels, Hardware interrupts, High CPU usage.

Daemon tools includes software to mount ISO files made from
CD's or DVD's so there original disk doesn't have to be in
the drive to use software like games.
It probably installed drivers to interface with the virtual drive.
You should be able to uninstall it from add/remove programs (XP)
or programs and features (vista and windows 7) in start/control panel.
What where you trying to do or install when this happened?

These are before and after screenshots of me selecting and starting a song up in iTunes-- note the Interrupt usage:

http://bingweb.binghamton.edu/~jmallen1/pics/interrupts.jpg

I have a dual-core E6400, so that 47.26% you see there is more like 94% of the whole first core, as indicated by the performance tab of the task manager.

http://bingweb.binghamton.edu/~jmallen1/pics/perf.jpg
(Note the processes running and memory usage.)

When this happens (with the configuration shown in my Belarc profile below), the music slows down drastically. Listen to the album version of "The Rockafeller Skank" by Fatboy Slim at 4:07 for a perfect example of what I hear for EVERY song that I start. I start a song, 10 seconds into it does that, continues for another 10, then goes back to normal.

It's not just music-- movies suffer, as well. iTunes seems to exacerbate the problem, since using foobar2000 seems to creep around the issue most of the time. It's obviously my actions triggering the high interrupt usage.

The sound card is a Bluegears b-Enspirer (a very new card). It got good feedback, and it certainly has a great sound, but I suspected it was the main problem. I deactivated my C-Media Audio (the card) through DM. After restart, Windows found my other sound device, a firewire audio interface, and used it for default sounds. However, it too suffered from the random interrupt CPU spikes.

Here's a link to my Belarc Advisor profile (with some of ... Read more

Every time I start my computer in the morning, my CPU usage and PF usage are very high, slowing down the system, for about 45 mins to 1 hour. I have included images of the Performance Tab and Processes tab of Task Manager. The image of the Performance Meter is not a totally accurate reflection of the issue, because usually the CPU usage bounces between 60% and 100%.I am using Windows XP Home EditionVersion 2002Service Pack 3Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz1.5 GB RAMI have already used CCLeaner and Uniblue. I have scanned with MS Defender and AVG Free version. That is the current AV software I am running. I am also using Norton Ghost to maintain a backup of my computer. Ok, so recently my desktop (a very NICE desktop) has been crashing and such. Even when I'm not in Maya or Photoshop, I see in the task manager the usage jumping around like crazy. I've noticed that svchost.exe sucks 100,000% or more of my usage and I can't load Counter Strike Source anymore without it crashing to the desktop or forcing me to restart my PC because of a blank screen. I've tried many programs that may help it like Process Tamer, Registry Cleaners, FreeRAMXP Pro and others, but the problem remains. This started happening just recently so....

Anyway, WTF!!? How do I alleviate this b/s??

It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

ASnd the thing is my rig is sucking up 50-60% physical memory, doing nothing. I've turned off as many services as i can that I don't need, I've run MBAM and MBAR and MSRT and avast! and AVG scans to find nothing. I've changed from Zone Alarm and Avast!, to Comodo and AVG.

I still can't find this thing. I need help. I got Hijack this, and then I realized I don't even know what I'm looking at. 26 instances of missing or lost files. And now it looks like there's a new drive (E) on my rig that I didn't put there with 99mb of space on it...

Sooo. What should I do? I can usually stumble my way through this kind of thing, but I'm at a loss. OH! an instance of svchost.exe is currently at 175,812k and I just restarted. I dunno what that means.

If anyone has absolute certainty about this I would appreciate your posting.

Thanks.

I've recently been getting 100% CPU usage errors, and over the top memory usage, then my computer for the most part locks up. I've reinstalled WinXP, fixed IE settings back to origional settings. Ran antispyware programs and AVG. At first my problems started when I played games on Facebook, getting script errors. As I've been doing a lot of studying on these problems, I got to thinking maybe I need more memory. Then I start getting 100% CPU errors.

I've noticed in my task manager in Processes there are lots of svchost.exe listings, and a few other programs that are listed more than once. Im attaching a picture of this list, in idle mode. Wandering if anyone else sees anything that may look odd.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Question: 100% usage on disk

2 days ago i downloaded a new game Playerunknow's battleground and noticed i was lagging really bad. I opened my task manager and my disk usage was at 100%. I closed everything and noticed my pc was doing things slow. My disk usage stays at 100% now and I do not know what to do. I ran some test and disabled some services that an article online suggested that helped others but does not seem to work for me. I was wondering if it is a good idea to uninstall all my drivers and download new ones. Please help me i really dont know what to do 😓

Answer:100% usage on disk

Hi, you have a lot going on there.
1. Tiworker.exe is triggered by Windows update, so it seems possible a Windows update is being applied.
2. Norton (n360.exe) is clearly active.
3. Edge is using a huge amount of resources.
4. SearchUI.exe is part of Cortana, and is also active.

Then you have svchost.exe - perhaps related to one of the above.

1. Before you downloaded this game, was your system behaving normally? I.e. could you be confident CPU and disk use was low?
If so, do you have a system restore point available set before your game was installed?

If you do, I suggest you try using it.

If not, first try uninstalling that game, and enable services you have disabled.

Then please post a screenshot of your task manager
(Screenshots are most helpfully posted using the 'Insert Image' icon above your post to the left of the video icon).

Also then please post a screenshot of your task manager in Safe Mode for reference if you still have problems in normal mode.

Note: to organise the columns of the task manager, click the tab at the head of a column so items with greatest resource use are at the top.

Please also post a screenshot of your Update History (Settings, Update and... , Update History

Question: Disk Usage

So I noticed that the disk usage, shown in task manager, never goes above 50% as if it is capped there. Is this normal and if not is there a way to allow more usage for the disk?

My disk usage is always at 100%. I have already disabled super fetch and 2 other functions that go along with it. I have cleaned my computer, Clean boot up, safe boot up, and get the same result. This just recently started happening to me. If anyone can give me any help or tools to use I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you very much!

Question: 100% Disk usage

Fresh installation of Windows 10 and disk still running at 100%, honestly can say this is by far the worst laptop I have ever owned. I've built and upgraded a few PC's, laptops and Mac's and never had any issues. Would it be worth me upgrading the RAM? It only has 2GB. Its only used for surfing the web and hangs on that most of the time.

Question: 100% Disk usage!

My disk usage always goes to 100% because of this process "wsappx" with a very high disk usage at startup with  10-30+ mb/s but after 10-15 minutes it lowers down to 0 mb/s and then after a few minutes it goes up again.

Answer:100% Disk usage!

That file's not part of Windows 7.  However you neglected to mention what version you're running or the make and model of your computer.  You could run Malwarebytes and your antivirus program in Safe Mode if you don't know what this thing is.

Answer:Disk usage 100%

Hi Thank you. So this suggests lots more stuff is loading in normal mode. I use the Piriform tools, and Ccleaner may very well help, as would Dfraggler. Then I get a more adventurous and use Sysinternals, which has lots of proggies that you dont need, but is small overall and wont be a burden.  AND you can delete it when you have finished with it. Ccleaner can look for duplicates, clear out cache and trash, uninstall stuff and (accept the backup for registry entries) tidy your registry. Sysinternals; Autoruns then Load Order and Pagedfrg are the primaries. If in doubt please ask.

Question: Disk usage

There are many instants of svchost.exe (localSystemNetworkRestricted) running. They all pop up at the same time. Most of them are linked to files such as games I play and other random files. . Are these linked to mall-ware? If so what is the right course of action for this problem. Have note i have used many antivirus, spyware, and mal-ware programs. All showing no signs of viruses. I am on a college campus sharing internet connection. Thanks.
