Question: Windows 7 start really slow and after it stucks in home screen

I have a problem with my pc the last 2 Days... It starts really slow.. First it freezes at starting window screen for 15 minutes about.. After this when I select the user it stucks again and show the blue background only with the cursor. When I finally press the code it takes another 10 minutes to finally open but I can't use it because it freezes whatever I press! In safe mode does the same thing but it stucks when loaded : classpnp.sys. My computer before 3 days opened in 1 minute.. No program starts with the start up all are disabled exept nvidia sound and my antivirus avast. I have tried everything to fix it but I can't.. Please help if u can

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 start really slow and after it stucks in home screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try running the Windows System File Checker (SFC)
Instructions: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
If that doesn't help, try doing a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download
Note: Uncheck the checkbox at the end of the installation titled "Enable free trial of Malwarebytes PRO"

Before you roll your eyes at another idiot who's asking the same question that has been asked a million, zillion times, I just like to say that I did do my homework and read all relevant threads from here and wide.

I have attached a copy of my HJT log. I defragged my HD yesterday. It took a good 8 hours for 80Gb HD, with 49% used. Is this kinda long? I then ran Bootvis. It showed that I'm not loading anything unnecessary. However, for the first 100 seconds, nothing is being loaded. There's a fair bit of disk write action going on.

I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop, model VGN-FS840/W. It's runnign MS XP Home Edition, Version 2002, with SP2. It has a Pentium 1.73GHz processor with 2Gb of RAM. I have no LAN network connections and only a wireless USB mouse is connected to it.

I did have Norton 2007 at one time. Before you say "That's it". I have since followed instruction to clean it out (including registry keys). Yes, I have ready about how the standard removal process doesn't clean it properly and I have followed creditable instructions to do the complete clean.

I have shut down all unnecessary services using MSCONFIG. That includes things like the indexing service, auto update & task scheduler (I switched it back on for Bootvis). I selected /NOGUIBBOT and set timeout to 3 seconds. (A quick side question, my BOOT.INI says "...partition(2)", but I don't remember doing that)

Hi everyone,
I m looking for some advice and infos about a recent problem with my zenbook UX 32 VD
I should first specify the specs: core i7 @ 1.9Ghz, 10Go RAM, dedicated GeForce GT620M, windows 7 64bit (version 6.1.7601 service pack 1 built 7601)
The problem is it takes a while to boot up?.between 2min and 8min with an annoying black screen before the "windows starting up" logo?.it was not the case before and it should not be the case considering that windows 7 is supposed to be installed on a SSD drive.
I tried a lot of things that people talked about on internet: downloading all the latest drivers for Norton, Nvidia graphics and so on?.I also used CCcleaner in case of registry errors, I did a memory test, I checked for viruses and malmware, I defragmented eveything possible, I cleaned up the drives, I restarted the computer after removing the services programs and the startup programs (using MSCONFIG)?.
And it didn?t change anything, it is still freakin slow to get to the welcome menu?.then the laptop works pretty fine.
I should also mention that I got no response typing F2, F8, F12 or the space bar during the long black screen when starting up the machine?.which is pretty annoying too.
Looking forward for some magician to help me, cheers

Answer:Slow boot up/start up windows 7 home premium asus zenbook UX32VD

If its still the bloated factory preinstalled Win7 then that is a corrupt install to begin with, larded with sponsors' crapware and useless duplicate utilities which throttle and conflict with superior versions in Win7. That's why most tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get the best possible install instead of the worst one which you have. This will also obviously solve your boot problem. Just be sure to make your Recovery disks first so you can delete all partitions during the booted reinstall.

Until then you can remediate the problem some following these steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware especially establishing a Clean Boot to get the freeloaders off Win7's back, using a free lightweight AV suggested with the Win7 firewall, gradually dumping the programs you realize you don't need or want.

If you still need to troubleshoot the slow boot work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will also help familizarize you with the system resources, logs, tools, hardware tests, and best practices.

Hello, I'm Pictor, and I've got a really annoying problem...

I was installing and updating software on a Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3) notebook.
After a reboot I'm experiencing really slow performance with (i guess) Explorer.exe.

This what's happened:

- I installed AutoCAD 2008
- I uninstalled Office 2007 and let installed Office 2003. Then I rebooted. Everything ok.
- I installed DirectX (downloaded from Microsoft website) that AutoCAD needs.
- Having a problem with Office 2003 (asking everytime to fix the installation) I followed this article from Microsoft support.
- I upgraded from Avira 9 to Avira 10. Then rebooted.

Now all the Operative System is slowed-down!

I logon with the Windows User, the Desktop Wallpaper appears..... and after about 5 minutes are shown the Desktop Icons and the Start Bar!
And every operation involving explorer.exe is fu**ing slow!
It takes 1 minutes and 30 seconds to show the Start Menu, after the click. Then it works for 1 minute (if I don't execute any directory) and stucks again!

And if instead I run Windows in Safe Mode it works like a charm! Fast and reliable!

What's happening?

What I've I done?

How to solve?

Thanks for reading me!

Hi guys again. I have posted my issue before.

AFter installing windows 7 ultimate. my laptop worked fine for like 1 month and now it begins to slow down and i believe the same problem might occur again (freeze up/ windows stuck at start up logo.)

After doing chkdsk for like 3 times now my laptop works but sometime when Hard drive light is not blinking (constantly on for few sec) windows freezes. but then it goes back to normal .

I have posted my logs after doing chkdsk. at 9 o'clock pm and 3 o'clock pm. 9o'clock log fixed my laptop.

So my question is do i need to replace hard drive in order to fix it? I feel like same problem might occur again in few months.

302734335 KB total disk space.
39489320 KB in 132112 files.

96 KB in bad sectors.
291455 KB in use by the system.

Can i fix bad sector using hdd regenerator?

Hi All, I have a g560 laptop which i bought just a month ago and use it for my study and entertainment purpose. I have noticed that sometimes when im using the laptop for more than 2-3 hrs. It starts giving me white screen. Lets say for ex. when the screensaver is supposed to come up, I get a white screen or when I am shutting down the white screen flashes for two times or when I turn the pc off, Its stuck at the white screen even though the laptop is off. The only way I can get the screen is off is by taking the battery out and then put the battery back in. In the past one month I've got this issue multiple times. Any help would be really appreciated. I work for a branded computer manufacturer myself but bought a LENoVo because my brother has been using a lenovo since the last three years without an issue. Thanks in advance

Maybe you need to update your BIOS. BUT WAIT!! If you do that, do it under DOS.

My system had issues where I could not get into system restore as it was not showing up
so went to msconfig and I went to advanced startup and chose to start in diagnostic mode and on reboot it now just has a light blue screen.

I can move mouse around and there is no login box?

Is there another bypass for this?

Please help!

Switch on the computer, press and hold the "F12" key while the Toshiba logo appears.
Alternative you can press and hold the "0" key to access the recovery option.
Choose "HDD Recovery" and confirm by selecting "Yes" that you want to enter the system recovery.

I recently sent my laptop (Equium A300D-13x) back to Toshiba to be repaired as it was overheating and cutting out.

It came back today and when I turned it on I got the screen where I was asked if I wanted to go into safe mode or start Windows normally.
Then it goes to a screen where it says, *Finishing the installation may take several minutes.

Please do not interrupt or shutdown the computer!*

I've been waiting all day now and I'm still stuck on this screen.

Has anyone had the same problem? And if so, how can I fix it?

Answer:Equium A300D-13x stucks on installation screen

I?ve recovered my notebook many times and the installation went always troublefree.
But of course such installation issue could happen always and I think you should simply repeat this procedure.

If you don?t have Toshiba Recovery disk then try to recover the notebook using the HDD recovery option.
Just press F8 while notebook powering up.
Then choose ?Repair my computer?. Then a new window will appear and you could select the new option called Toshiba HDD.

Check it out!

go to Start/run/ and type MSCONFIG ok then go to startup and remove all the ticks from the boxes of the programmes you don't need on startup, you can untick all if you require, then click OK and restart your PC, upon restart you will receive a message saying you have chosen to do selective start up put a tick in the box not to show message again, you will find your PC will start a lot quicker,it does not delete the programs just stops them running when you start your PC.

Four days ago I installed BB flashback software but due to some problems I had to uninstall it and the installation didn't complete. After that day, whenever I open my Toshiba Laptop the windows vista boots normally but stucks at 'please wait while your system is preparing' screen. After waiting for a long time, I opened task manager, ended that running screen and then my laptops works just fine. I don't know what's that. I tried system restore many times but it always ends up unsuccessful. Later on I even installed BB flashback successfully and a new anti-virus AVG, but the problem persists. Any idea and any suggestions please???

Hello all,

I recently decided to upgrade the Memory in my lovely laptop.
I went online, found suitable RAMs and ordered.

What i got are 2 of these:

Installation is very easy, but as soon as i turn on my laptop, it stucks in a black screen with a white underscore upright.

I guess its a incompatibility problem ?
Could you please help me out?

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite L675-10T stucks in a black screen after new RAM upgrade

I think you are right? it looks like the modules are not fully compatible even if the online dealer page says they are?
You can remove the new RAM modules just to check if the notebook would boot up properly? I guess the unit will power up correctly?.

Solution??? Use another RAM modules? I made good experience using Kingston modules? they could be a little bit expensive but I think they should work properly.

I have a Toshiba Portege Z930-D3S laptop. I wanted to run a system recovery and did everything exactly as in the manual page 4-24, Section System recovery Options. The tool told me that the recovery partition is empty (or something like this) and the recovery cannot be performed. I definitely did not erase it and do not how it can be. Then there was an option to erase sdd and I thought that this might help (don't ask me why) and that the tool would erase everything but the recovery partition. So, I chose it.

Now I have the frozen screen with "Toshiba Leading Innovation" and cannot enter any menu neither by pressing 0, nor by holding F8. I cannon restart the laptop, it seems that it simply fall asleep when I press the power button.

Please, help me to recover the system.

Hello, when I turn on or restart my laptop (Compaq 6730b, OS Win7 64 bit), it begins to start, but after a few seconds it  stucks on screen with HP logo and label "Press the ESC key for startup menu". After that begin to flash NumLock and CapsLock diods on laptop - maybe two or three times. But nothing happens, although I press ESC or any other key. Only I can do is to turn off laptop and try it again, sometimes many times on an on till OS starts properly. I have permanently plugged in many peripherals - external monitor, external keyborad, mouse, webcam, speakers and I have laptop permanently plugged in charger. Maybe this facts could be cause of the problem, i guess, because when I turn laptop itself without any peripherals, this problem didnt appear. I'll be very thankful for any advice to solve this unpleasant problem. Thanks a lot. Regards miiichal

(This has probably been done before but a search failed)

My wife's PC has XP Home and starts up very slowly. It can take > 7 minutes before the hour glass finally goes away.

Is there a log file somewhere that can tell me what the PC is doing while it starts up?
Perhaps it is turning on unnecessary services or opening programs that it does not need too. I have gone through the start up menu and removed some programs that were apparently being started but are not necessary. That took off about 1-2 minutes. A nice start but still slow.

The PC has only 1G of RAM and I know that it needs some more but is there anything else I can do in the mean time?

Answer:Log file for slow start up of XP Home

Download CCleaner and delete temp files with it. As for a log file, go to the Event Viewer and open up System and Applications and look for any Red X's.

I have a Satellite Pro C850-1FN and for some reason it gets stuck in a Preparing automatic repair screen on bootup. It will sit with the text on the screen and then after about 8 minutes a blue screen will show talking about a problem and then the PC re-boots.

The cycle is then continued.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite Pro C850-1FN stucks in Preparing Automatic Repair screen

It looks like the automatic repair isn?t possible.
Did you try another option ? HDD recovery?

The HDD recovery procedure would start new system as well as driver installation and would set the notebook back to factory settings.

I think if system repair isn?t possible, your next step should be the HDD recovery.
In case the HDD recovery would not work too, then you should use the Recovery disk.

Dear supporters,

Model: Satellite L775D-10W
OS: Win7 64 bit
Problem: The booting procedure gest stuck after "Windows loads data" and a progress bar undertitled with "Microsoft Corporation", resulting in a black screen and a moveable mouse cursor.

The same problem occurs everytime...
pressing F8 >> all options (icluding safe mode) >> boot gets stuck
Booting from Win7 64-bit DVD >> boot gets stuck
Booting from Win7 64-bit DVD >> all options >> boot gets stuck

Is it likely that the graphic card is broken or that the corresponding driver is not fitting anymore?

Thank you for your time in advance!

Answer:Satellite L775D-10W - Boot stucks: Black screen + mouse cursor visible

Graphic card problem might be possible but in such case the POST (power on self test) would not be passed and in my opinion it would not be possible to access the BIOS.

However, this is just a theory?
Try to boot the notebook using some Live CD like Linux

I would also recommend you to start the advanced boot menu. (pressing F8) and to choose Repair my Computer option.
Then choose ?Toshiba HDD recovery?

This option would recover the notebook back to factory settings.

The title says it all.  I have run AVG 9, but there is a bug in it giving Error 0xe0010058.  I ran the "fix" for that program, but I still get that error along with Error 0xe0010053.  I have run Spybot a number of times, and it has cleaned what it can, but the problem persists.
Another symptom is that Firefox and Chrome crash randomly.  I don't use IE, so I don't know if it happens there or not.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop running Windows XP Home SP3 with all updates. I also have Comodo Pro and use SUPERAntiSpyware Pro as well as SpyBot and CCleaner when needed.

I recently upgraded the HD to a WD IDE using Acronis True Image. It didn't migrate over my recovery partition and this is probably unrelated but I wanted to mention it.

The system is behaving very slow. I constantly freezes (mouse doesn't move) and the hard drive light blinks a lot as though it is doing heavy I/O or computations for no real practical reasons.

I'm not sure what I can do at this point. I usually can fix slow systems but this has me stumped. Obviously there is some other problem which my security software and Win updates haven't helped.

Are others having this same problem or behavior recently with XP Home? And can anyone walk me through some procedures to rule/out or check my system?

Thank you

I own an HP Mini (exact model escapes me at the moment) with XP Home Edition installed and upon reaching the XP load screen - a blue screen flashes up and vanishes equally quickly as Windows re-starts.

This lead me to the " We apologize for the inconvenience" screen with a nice selection of choices, ranging from: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompts, Last Known Good Config, and Start Windows Normally.
Obviously, none of these work and the cycle repeats.

I read of other similar cases with the same blue screen, and I followed their lead by pressing F8 repeatedly (in exasperation) until I got to the Windows Advanced Option Menu. At this point, I chose "Disable automatic restart on system failure".

This halted the instant re-start once getting to the blue screen, and gave me time to see this:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I'm really worrying, I just spent my money on those parts and now it's a problem to get a refund if any part is not working.

Thanks techguys..

Hard to say. Can you please explain what you think happened to your laptop? Did it have Windows 7? How old was it?If the laptop had a major failure with the HDD, doing a reformat does  not eliminate then problem. Did you not try the restore or repair features of the laptop?  Did it have a recovery partition?

I have a Intel Pentium D CPU 2.66GHz processor supported by MS XP professional Service pack-3 OS. I have cleaned the registry recently. In the recent week I have experienced a very very slow start up. Usually my computer starts up moderately fast, but now after the boot up and after the message "Windows is starting up" it almost takes more than five minutes to show the welcome screen and then after the "Loading personal settings" it again takes again another five minutes. So literally it takes more than 10 minutes for me to enter my user account. Earlier it had not taken more than 1-2 minutes for me to enter my user account. I would sincerely like you to kindly provide me with a solution to rectify this problem.
C.Baskar (cccbaskar)

Answer:Very slow to enter Home screen and user account

1. go to start>run>msconfig.
2. click startup tab.
3. untick the processes that are not sure to keep the system processes ticked.
4. press ok and restart your computer.
hope this trick solves your problem.

Hiyas, some program groups or app shortcuts inside start menu folder won't show in full desktop start menu nor they're able to pin to home screen. I inspected respective folders a bit but found nothing suspicious. Most of them was created by regular installer. Also user permissions are good (inherited from start menu base). No matter if I move the folder/shortcut between "%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" ↔ "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs", it just is ignored by desktop start menu.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Okay, so yesterday I recieved a blue screen error on my laptop IRQL error stop code: 0x0000000A. I took it into best buy and repaired the systme through previous dates like maybe 15 times before it finally took on one(that I had already tried) and finally started back up.

I began to reinstall my programs and modifications I'd made to vista. RocketDock, Logon mod(to change appearance of logon screen), etc. I got to Vistaglazz did the system mod rebooted, worked fine, then I did the theme mod and rebooted and this error started again.

Ive successfully repaired this multiple times, ran memtest twice, gone through Event viewer and found a WMI error @ Event ID:10 found a forum that had a script to run to correct this, rebooted and it corrected.

However, The problem still exists.

I am at my end. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this error or why it continues to perpetuate. There are NO other devices connected to my laptop, at the moment theres only like 4 programs AIM, Firefox, FFXI a MMORPG, and notepad++. I just don't know what else there is to do aside from wiping and reformating using the system restore files to reset the system to default settings. I've backed up all my important files so if I need to I am willing but I'd seriously rather not.

Some info on the laptop:
HP laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium x64
4gigs of ram
AMD Athlon Dual-Core QL-64 2.10 GHz

It works perfectly fine in Safemode with networking. Thats how I'm posting this, but i dont ... Read more

I have successfully managed to upgrade, add a shutdown tile on the start screen, add a classic start on the desktop screen and get the right tiles on my desktop and remove the initial screen. I have a usable OS on my laptop again and it may sound strange but I like both interfaces and use them equally.

A few things I am really stuck on.

1. The right corner (charms bar) can take me back to the start tile screen from the desktop screen. However, it would be nice to have an icon on the desktop screen to take me to the start tile screen. I cannot find a way to do this. Please help.

2. I would like to pin my tiles so they never move. There are some tiles I want fixed nicely in the place I put them but each time I want to add a tile, and move it across, all my tiles move about.

3. It would be nice to colour my tiles individually. Is there any App to do this?

4. Some tiles cannot be made bigger (i.e. existing applications). Is there a way to do this?

Hello xyciana and welcome to Eightforums

I'm not sure if there is a way to make a shortcut icon to take you to the start screen. But you can use the Windows logo key on your keyboard to take you to the start screen. Just 1 press on the key and you are there.

2. I would like to pin my tiles so they never move. There are some tiles I want fixed nicely in the place I put them but each time I want to add a tile, and move it across, all my tiles move about.

I don't know if that can be done. In my knowledge, No.

3. It would be nice to colour my tiles individually. Is there any App to do this?

No, sorry to say that again, but that's how it is. No way to change the color of the tiles individually. But you never know, in the future somebody might come up with an application to change the color of the tiles For now, no is the answer.

4. Some tiles cannot be made bigger (i.e. existing applications). Is there a way to do this?

Well .... No again.

Hope I could help

It used to (few days ago) take less than 10 seconds to get to the login screen once the BIOS was finished, now it's taking more like 25 seconds. Since this is pre-login, I assume it has nothing to do with startup programs (note that startup is lightning fast once I login) and is more likely a driver issue?

From what I've read on forums, the suggestion is usually to consult the Event Viewer and/or configure Windows to give "verbose" messages during startup so you can monitor the start-up process?

Does that about sum it up?

Thank you!

Answer:Slow start-up BEFORE login screen

It could be a network issue. If your PC is configured to get its IP address and other settings from a DHCP server, such as a modem or router, and it is switched off, then it can lengthen the time to boot up if its searching for a router and then times out. If you leave the modem/router on then it should pick it up fast and make boot times faster.

Another thing to check for, is for the number of startup items that are loaded. Use MSConfig.exe to see what is loaded after Windows is started. Reducing these can improve startup and login times.

Dear TSF,

I am currently having a problem with my laptop. It had not been used for almost two months then this issue occurs; the booting process which usually took less than a minute now takes 6-10 minutes, and the same issue happens with the Start-up.

I am not sure of what's going on or has gone on with my pc. Since I went out of city for a couple of months, I didn't use my pc during that period. I've been experiencing this issue for the last two weeks.

At first I thought it was due to Spyware Doctor which was programmed to run at start-up, because at every startup this program failed to start and showed a message in the tray icon "Spyware Doctor engine is restarting" or sometimes "spyware doctor fail to start". (However, this was never the case before I went out of town) Therefore, i decided to uninstall this program through the Control Panel.

Then a few days later, my brother-in-law told me that he used my pc a couple of times while I was not around, and he said that he only used it for reading and replying e-mail, not more than that. Well, I can count on him for his words.

So, after surfing the internet, I found this forum and am really looking forward to getting your help out of this issue.

Answer:Boot-screen & Start-up really slow

Dear TSF,

It's been a while since I posted this thread. Now my pc still behaves the same since I've done nothing to it.

However, it seems like on every start up now, it pops the "windows explorer" window, telling me that my pc fails to load which then leaves the option of 'debug' and 'close'.

Once I tried to debug it, it left the desktop with only wallpaper for around a minute, then back loaded up the desktop (tray) icons and all.
But I did try to close it too, it suddenly popped up a small window on the top left of my desktop with a quite fast illegible message, at least to my knowledge of computer, "C:/ Recycler ...." I could only have a glimpse of that 'recycler'.

This morning when I started up and chose 'Close', it also popped the same message.

Please help.

Can't get into windows, black screen with blinking cursor for some reason I can't even get into windows 7, after I get pass the screen that says "asus" , my laptop brand, It goes into a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left hand corner like this:

Click this bar to view the full image.

I'm unable to do anything at that point, it just blinks. I can't even boot into safe mode now, the only think I'm able to get into is the Bios Setup Utility menus and Asus' express gate, which is just a media/internet/gaming/skype thing that doesn't allow .exe files to run...

This came factory installed so I don't have a windows 7 disc to help run fixes or anything. please, someone, help.

Answer:Mouse(pointer vanishes) and keyboard stucks at windows 8 .

Are you sure you are actually turning the computer off? It sounds more like the computer is going into standby, and when you 'turn it back on' so to speak, Windows is having a problem re-initializing the keyboard/mouse from standby - which is why after you then restart it again (ie., a full restart), everything works fine.

Hello - I have been trying to fix days for one week now. My laptop came with win 7 home premium installed, and was running great. Last week suddenly could not start after updates, saying "BOOTMGR is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". The first thing I did is to repair windows and could not. I decided to go ahead and install windows 7 from scratch. I wiped all HDD, and create new partition (so I will have three in total, 100MB, 500GB, 480GB - I have 1TB Hitachi Drive HDT721010SLA360. )  I hit continue and finished copying all files. It got to extend win files and stuck at 6% - after a while got a blue screen and windows install loop begins. I try again, and stuck and windows install startups. Tries more and more, at various stages including BIOS first screen, windows load files, windows starting... sometime just loops, and loops. I am using USB to boot. The keyboard and mouse are wireless and require USB to be plugged on desktop. I am thinking the hard drive is failing, I run the SMART test on it (both short and extended) and it came without errors. I recently got HP diagnostic disk and run it - all test passed without any failure.  I am wondering what is wrong?  I did test win 7 32bit, win 64bit, and Ubuntu and none of them worked. They all stuck at certain point or infinite loops.  I attached some pictures.  PLEASE HELP ME!  Please let me know if you have questions or need anything.   Thank y... Read more

Hi there, please can you help?
I realize this BSOD might be a commonly reported problem but the issues here seem not to have been addressed specifically by other threads so I hope I haven't opened a new thread unnecessarily. Anyhow, here goes...
Various pc problems have arisen since coming home from holiday last week:

Background: 2 months ago: installed samsung SSD to run a new install of Win 7 64bit - on Asus P5NE-SLI with newly installed AHCI controller card. Successful after some troubleshooting; ran fine for several weeks.

PC left for 2 weeks while on holiday: on return a few days ago pc had problems on start-up: blank screen; no/slow start-up then BSOD attached.
The problem now is specifically a start-up issue: very slow to boot windows; if I hit F8 or del then BIOS loads very slowly, if at all; windows loads but freezes part way through. It DOES eventually load but it doesn't seem stable: yesterday the pc restarted unprompted.
The clock time was incorrect by about 20minutes when I got home from holiday (cmos battery?)

So far, I have (in chronological order)...
cleaned out dust, checked for shorts and loose wires
run Prime95 stress tests: seems OK - no crashes; Speed Fan recorded CPU temps of >50C before I closed the program. On idle CPU is now 37C; GPU 47C
memtest run overnight: 7 passes no errors;
updated GPU driver; run Furmark GPU stress test: all fine!
searched for other driver updates - none required (at least through windows)
run Sams... Read more

Answer:Slow start-up; crawls into BIOS setup; then slow to load windows

The problem is with your usb hub, or quite possibly a usb device that is plugged into it.
The fault is clearly sourced in the usb system though.
You may try updating your chipset drivers.
try rebooting with nothing plugged in but mouse and kb.

I waited for quite sometime but it is still stuck there and my profile is not uploaded. I tried many times. But discovered I am able to log in to administrator account and use it without problems. I had even done a system restore but it does not solve the problem. It was working fine till now. I had this problem before and had to reformat it. But I do not want to. Is there any way to solve this problem? Please help. I really need to access to this account.

Answer:Screen stucks at "Loading your personal settings". HELP please!!!

If you can log in to the administrator account then you should be able to resolve this.Log in as the admin, then openC:\Documents and Settings\your.usernameSelect Tools > Folder Options > View Select "Show hidden files and folders"This folder contains all the information relating to your account. For the time being, you can access files this way.To resolve the problem, I would try renaming the folders in C:\Documents and Settings\your.username one at a time. Then log off, and try logging on Rename "Application Data" to "Application Data Old"Log off administratorLog on as your.usernameIf this failsLog on as administratorRename "C:\Documents and Settings\your.username\application data old" back to C:\Documents and Settings\your.username\application dataRepeat this process for each folder.

I cannot believe that MS has not left us with any option for a simple drop-down list of programs, in text form, which is vastly more efficient to scan and select from than any icon-based silly page like Start Screen.

Can anyone tell me how to get a dropdown screen of programs, such as was formerly available in Windows 97, which was a much more accessible and intuitive operating system. Windows 8, as far as I can tell, has been designed for highschool kids, not people actually interested in the work productivity

Answer:Start Screen is unintuitive, slow and inefficient

I can't disagree with that.

97 was before my time, but a lot are using start menu replacements which often have the option to boot straight to desktop and disable the hot corners, if that is any use to you.

Many find it transforms 8 into something they can live with - though they wouldn't have chosen it.

- I booted my laptop yesterday however it only came out with a black screen with a mouse pointer, no loading or anything that you usually see on startup. I forced shut down my laptop and turn it back on and everything went back to normal. However this happened again earlier today so I consulted my friend about this and he told me it was a computer virus where the virus activates on startup, and told me to go to this website for help.
- Windows 8.1
Things I have tried
- "SFC /Scannow" CMD command - Came out with no integrity Violations
- MCafee virus scan - Did not do anything
(I am sorry for my bad english, it is not my first language)

If you think this may help, Im running ME on a Dell Dimension 4100. It's a Dell P780 monitor. Display adapter is NVIDIA RIVA TNT 2 Model 64.
Directions to a fix will be appreciated. Thanks from me to you.

Hello to everybody,

I'm italian, I've a Satellite A300 with Vista Home Premium, I payed 30 euros for the free upgrade to Windows 7 that reached my house yesterday. I received 2 DVDs:
- 1 to "make ready" my laptop : *TOSHIBA UPGRADE DVD*
- 1 to upgrade the O.S. : *WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM UPGRADE DVD*

+The first step:+ to use the first DVD: all right, "the system is ready to install Windows 7, please insert the second dvd". When I insert the second one, I accept the license and after that, the first step of istallation: *"system compatibility check"*
*This steps is my problem.*

I restated more than 10 times the praxis but it jams at that step, I left laptop at this step all night long but today morning it was still there, no advances, it's obvious that there's a problem, but I cannot understand if it depends on my laptop or on the DVD.

I tried to start the laptop with Windows 7 DVD inside, the system start by the DVD but it ask me to format the partition in which are vista files and this is not an upgrade. I bought an upgrade just to not delete previous programs and to not format the first partition of my laptop's disk.

How to do, whom can i turn to?
Does anyone have the same problem?
Does anyone know an escape?

thanx 4 your replies

Answer:Satellite A300-1RZ - Windows 7 upgrade stucks on first step of installation

Hi Dread One

That?s strange because I didn?t have a problem with my upgrade disk from Toshiba. Everything worked fine! :)

I don?t know if you read this but here is a step by step upgrade instruction:

As you can read before upgrade you have to remove some programs if they are installed on your computer.
Check this!!!

I have new laptop, ASUS A52J, i3 processor, 4 GB of memory, 640 GB hdd and so on.
It runs legal Windows 7 professional, x64 system and it usual memory usage after booting is around 40% as I have many applications loaded on boot (Skype, MSN, Hamachi, Avast, MSE, and few other utilities...)

It worked perfectly for few months, though it needed minute or 2 to completely load and boot, those few minutes were acceptable in every way.

Suddenly, I don't know why, when I turn on the laptop, type password and desktop appear it just stucks at that point. Anything I do in that 15 mins and sometimes more causes laptop to completely freeze. I cant even invoke task manager.

Its completely frustrating see this quite good configuration struggling to load and boot windows.

From your experience is this windows issue? Can this be connected with some recent windows 7 updates? Also, I checked memory with windows memory diagnostic tool seeking for some memory issues, but it whole test passed for several times without errors. I did repair using windows 7 DVD but this didn't solve the problem.

Avast free AV, Microsoft Essentials and Malwarebytes (all newest versions and updated ) didn't report any malware/virus/trojan on the system.

Can I suspect some faulty hardware on brand new laptop?

What are your suggestions?
Ty all in advance.

Answer:Windows 7 professional x64 stucks while booting on ASUS A52J laptop

Hmmm.........first thing I notice is that you have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast. You should pick one or the other, not both.

Type msconfig.exe in the start box and go to msconfig. Look at the startup tab. Uncheck everything except your antivirus and restart. Does that improve things?

Look at the services tab of msconfig. Check "hide all Microsoft services". How many services are then shown and do you need them all to be running?
Have you downloaded and run the hard disk manufacturer's disk tools?

You are absolutely locked out of Task Manager?

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem.
I downloaded the BIOS Update from the Toshiba Hompage.

The update started correctly, but at the point "Flash new BIOS" at "Processing block 26 of 33" the update stucks!
I'm waiting since almost 2 hours, but nothing happens.
My screen freezes, I can't move the cursor, the clock shows the same time.... so nothing happens...

Is that normal?
I don't think so, but it's my first BIOS-update, hence I'm not really familiar with it...

Does anyone has an idea?

It would be great to get some help!

Answer:Portege M800 - BIOS Update stucks - Windows 7 32bit

This is different not a common BIOS update process?
The BIOS update should not take a long time.

In your case is it possible that something went wrong during the flashing process and the ROM module has not been flashed properly.
I think you are in trouble and in my opinion only the ASP technician would be able to help you.

The BIOS ROM must be flashed again using an crisis procedure and this can be done only by an ASP technician.

I can't get my desktop to work I add a fix-it repair disk and I think I deleted my programs in there I can't get to the home screen or the internet. I bought a xp recovery disk and even a system rescue disk both did not com with instructions the recovery disk when I first used it I didn't put in a password cause I didn't know it so I did get to go throw the setup menu so when I use it and it asks me to start with windows or hit the r in setup I'll hit enter and the screens says this! Set-up cannot find the End user Licensing agreement <EULA> set-up cannot continue. To quit press f3. I new a this I know nothing about computers at all this is all new to me I did something dumb I went into the setup menu and changed the settings to the computers to so now it doesn't even boot up right cause when it try and use the the boot up command the safe Mode with the command prompt /safe mode it won't boot up it say passing up booting . I so stuck and confused help please . Thank you

Answer:My windows xp home won't boot up to home screen

The recovery process means you will lose all you files, not a problem if you have everything backed up.If you haven't, take the HDD out & Slave it to another HDD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms. Copy your stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the host HD or other media. Now put it back in your comp, once again, no need to bolt it in at this stage ( change the jumper, back to where it was ) go into the Bios & set the boot to either Boot from floppy or CD 1st. Now off the boot floppy, fdisk, reboot & format. Or, from the CD, delete ALL the partitions & format to NTFS. You lose everything. Now reinstall the operating system.Setup cannot find the End-User License Agreement (EULA). Setup will not continue edited by Johnw

My daughter's college laptop has to be cleaned up a little. It seems to hang at bootup and show a light green screen for the longest time. Then it will eventually show her desktop. Then it takes forever to allow her to click on anything to start.
It has Macafee on it, it has Malware Antivirus free on it, GlarySoft. It defrags once a week.
Would anyone be able to help me look into this light green screen displaying at startup?
You guys have helped me before with my browser being hyjacked...but I know if I run jobs...someone should look at them that knows what is happening. I checked for updated drivers and that seems to be ok..but you never know.
Thanks so much.

I had this problem today and it took some of my time and I couldn't find anything useful on google except stuff like " :( your flash disk is dead..", "iso image is corrupted"
First I thought the problem was the image I used to write on my usb stick so I tried a new download..but that's not it..(at least in my case")

I think there was a problem with hard disk which I parted as "C:250 and D:250" I was quite hopeless so I divided one of 250's to 75.. and chose 75 to install the system...somehow it didn't stuck the process and it got installed.

Since i upgraded my Lenovo ideapad Y50-70 to Windows 10 i'm finding problems when i play games like Warthunder or World of Tanks. Sometimes i get the following error message from the notification-screen: Windows 10 has find a kernel problem and has automatically been fixed. And then it shuts down the game/application. Sometimes Warthunder tries to run the game in DirectX 9.0 and then it can't use the nvidea card at all.. Is there anyone which knows a fix for this? Currently i have tried lots of things like: - Deinstall Nvidea GeForce (& all it's components) and performing a clean install. - Installing the previously best-known running Nvidea GeForce version. Both these options didn't work out. Please let me know if you are having the same problems as i am   Btw: my secondary card is an Nvidea GeForce GTX 860M. thank you, Jim.

My computer was working fine then just the past couple days has been acting WIERD.

So this is what happens, while using the computer, periodically when I go to the start screen and search for something, it just hangs for about 20-60 seconds before responding. Now today, every single time I start the computer, it loads fine gets me to the start screen, but if I type anything for the search then it freezes on me for 20-60seconds. If I start it and immediately go to the desktop, I can run SOME programs like IE or Chrome but NOT Ventrilo or games (for 20-60 seconds). Also, TASK manager will not come up nor do any of the windows 8 "charms" work for that time frame.

I am at a loss, this is a fresh OS install about a month ago on a brand new Samsung 840 SSD. All my drivers are up to date, I didn't have this issue a week ago but I did have a system restore point that I restored my computer to and that didn't fix it.

I also tried the Windows Startup Repair, and it tells me it could not repair it and to check my log at "F:/Window...." whereas I have NO F:/ drive and Windows is obviously installed on my C:/ drive (also, it will not allow me to "refresh" my computer. *I have legit Windows 8 Keys that I purchased

I have tried disabling the fast boot in power options.
I have ran a registry cleaner (ccleaner, I hate running cleaners but it was a desperate measure).
I tried creating a new user account.

I was recently infected with a trojan virus. Sophos removed it successfully but it keeps showing up. Now my internet explorer and firefox are running extremely slow but after just installing safari, I think it's a problem with the apps themselves because internet speed is fine. I can't install spybot s&d because the installer file needs to connect to the internet and it just times out every time.

Here's my hijackthis log

Any help with whatever this virus and/or malware did to my computer would be great.

My computer (Dell Inspiron 530) has become slow to boot up. it takes around 5 to 8 minutes to get up and running. When it gets there it runs great.

When it boots up you get a blank screen for a minute or less, then the Dell Spalsh screen for about 3-4 minutes and then the Windows Xp screen for around 3 minutes.

Using McAFee and no virus, malware etc issues detected. I have maintained computer well and runs absolutely perfectly outside of this slow start up.

Ran the Dell support check and came up with an Error 4COO:021D. The seconds register is not updating. The part may be bad or the 32KHz crystal might not be functioning.

Any ideas what that means and which part or how to fix?

I have a laptop Satellite P300. On booting up vista the microsoft logo comes up and then when the POST screen should be showing me what the bios is checking the screen is blank.

It remains blank for 5 to 10 mins then the pointer appears then it finally goes to the desktop.
I suspect the bios is hanging on something but I can't see cos the screen is blank. I suspect there is a setting somewhere. I can enter the bios but can't find anything in there.

Also regards to the extremely slow boot, I have disabled nearly all the start up programs but it has made no difference.

Has anyone any ideas?

i try this, but nothing happens ?
im running Vista, Avast and Stopzilla
thanks for any help

Answer:very slow black screen on start up / anti-virus stopped working

Stopzilla has some poor and good reviews and the poor reviews would put me off from installing it.
Maybe download malwarebytes and give that a run to see if it finds any problems. You get a fortnights trial of the pro version now.

The start screen interface of Windows 8, as well as the improved versions in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Featured Update, let you pin apps or programs to it so that you can open them quickly from there.

Designed specifically for touch-screen devices, it has its limitations and usability issues on devices without touch. While I do use it for a couple of things, search for example if I do not have a start menu app installed at the time, I do not really use it as an application or program launcher. The icon that I click on the most when I'm there is the Desktop icon which leads to the system's desktop interface.

One of the things that is not well designed in my opinion is that you cannot really customize the Start Screen interface much.

While Windows 8.1 introduced an option to use your desktop wallpaper there, it is very limited in terms of what you can place on it, and where you can place those elements.

Start Screen Unlimited is an interesting piece of software, and the main reason why that is the case is that it adds features to Windows 8's start interface., making it more useful in the process.

The program is available as a Lite and Deluxe version. The core differences between both versions are that you can only use the Deluxe version in a commercial environment, and that you get to use access to 3D menus that you can use. Plus, you get free support, automatic updates and new features before free users do.

The free version adds the following items to ... Read more

I am hoping people on the forum can help me. Got a Dell XPS M1550 last year January. Everything was fine until today. It's a North American machine, but I was in England for an exchange and currently am, and I think Dell warranty on Hardware is 1 year anyway so really no point after 3 months into the second year. (The region just incase power has anything to do with but its been fine the past 6 months so I don't see how it might).

In any case, I was away last night, and when I came back, my computer was on because I left it to run a McAfee virus check. When I was leaving it had 34GB of free space on HDD, but when I checked it when I returned it was at 59.1GB.

After I turned of the computer later in the day and took it with me to a different city I connected it again and turned it on. From that point it went directly to the windows welcome screen with windows logo and Windows 7 text loading, but not going anywhere. Eventually it restarted giving me 2 options: Either go into start-up repair or start windows normally. When I start it normally, same thing happens, when I go into system repair, it is stuck at a black screen with a mouse cursor. It won't boot safe mode or any other mode, giving me error screens... (Either {Fatal ... Error} or STOP: 0x0000007B error. Fortunately, you can still create a repair disc, using method 2 of this tutorial: System Repair Disc - Create

Just download the ISO and burn it.

Try booting to the repair disc, and try a System Restore: System Restore

Good luck!

Can someone please help me? I'm a first-time forum user

I've got an Acer Aspire laptop here that has decided to stop loading/starting up.

When I turn the power button on:
- I can see the Acer logo screen (and also get into setup if I press F2)
- The cursor (_) blinks once or twice
- Then the screen just goes black/blank and stays that way

Twice (when I have left power on at the black screen), I have eventually seen this Windows Boot Manager message (maybe after 5 minutes each time):

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
Unfortunately, I do not have the Windows installation disk.

I have tried using a System Repair Disk (on DVD, burnt from another laptop with same OS)....but got stuck when the broken laptop didn't detect or couldn't read the disk.

I also tried the Alt+F10 system recovery, but after 20 minutes on the "Please wait a moment..." screen, I gave up and turned the power off.

Please help. Thanks.

Answer:Acer won't start, Black screen / Windows failed to start

Hello noob and welcome to Seven Forums.

Can you get into Safe Mode via the Advanced Boot Options menu? If yes, you can check for damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two in the SFC tutorial.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

Safe Mode

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Another possibility from Safe Mode is to try rolling back your computer to a date/time prior to this problem occuring using a system restore point.

System Restore

If the above desn't help, one of the Forum experts prepared a troubleshooting guide for failure to start issues.

Let me be somewhat specific. I want my Windows 10 startup and operation to appear as much like Windows XP Pro as possible.
I do not use ANY social media aps, and the CLOUD type things that are available. I do not want them to take space on the HD either, and I would like to control the updates so that these things do not download to the PC either.
OK, I am NEW to Win10 and have what I am told is a SMALL HD, 32gigs is not small to me, but windows keeps taking away HD space. The actual OS part is less than 8gig, but it is eating up another 10 gig of the HD. Maybe there is no way to accomplish this, BUT I must examine this.
I have 2 identical Dell micro 3050. the auto updates keep taking away HD space. The start screen things (icons) have been made invisible, so they boot to the desktop now. No password needed, and no Outlook account either.
OK folks, you can shoot at the messenger now. I am willing to let the basic OS update, but don't need all the application update to download and never leave. I would manually delete stuff if I knew what was not tied to the actual Win10 os.
