Is there a program/application(free) to scan and fix disk errors?

Question: Is there a program/application(free) to scan and fix disk errors?

I tried using Auslogics Boostspeed trial version,
It's actually pretty cool 'cause it scans and shows how many junks files, registry errors, fragmented and disk errors there is, plus status if it's critical or whatsoever.
But since it's only a trial version, I can't fix/repair all of the errors.
the last time i checked showed that my computer doesn't have disk error but have other issues that need to be fixed. So i was wondering if there's such a program or i can manually check and fix stuff like this. Thanks in advance and have a nice day people^^

Preferred Solution: Is there a program/application(free) to scan and fix disk errors?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Is there a program/application(free) to scan and fix disk errors?

Windows has a built in disk checker. You can access it by right clicking on your drive and choosing "properties", then "tools" then "error-checking".

You can also run it from a command prompt.

You can also download disk utilities from your drive manufacturer's web site.

hey there. I have a couple older computers that are having some problems. Both seem to hang up sometimes and just run sluggish. Ive done countless adware/spyware/virus scans and they are all clean. Ive also ran hijack this and posted logs on forums and everything looks fine. Now, my question is, since im assuming its hardware thats starting to fail in these comps, is there a program that I can run that scans all hardware for any problems? A free program would be best. If not, anything would help. Thanks!

Answer:Program to scan for hardware errors?

There's memtest for RAM, several utilities for hard drives, and if you wanna check your PSU, you should probably buy one of those little tester thingies.

i want to scan my disk for errors when i restart my computer but if it really takes to long is there a way i can cancel the scan?

Answer:i want to scan my disk for errors when i restart

If you are talking about chkdsk with respect to W2000 or XP, you can use ctrl+c to interrupt if you are running from command prompt.
If you are talking about the auto chkdsk that occurs if ntfs system detects disk anamolies...other than manual reset, I have not discovered another method of halting it. But using this I have not ever inflicted any damage either.

I'm looking for a free software program that will let me scan documents to PDF. I have been using the software that came with my Brother MFC-7820N printer (Brother Control Center 2.0) but the PDF's are always HUGE! a 1 page pdf in 300x300 B&W is a whopping 350K. trying to email more then 2 or 3 pages usually end up in undeliverable mail.

I have tried a few freeware programs i found through Google but they either don't work, or leave watermarks.

Answer:good free program to scan to pdf

I don't know about free, but I've always used the Paperport series. IMO the best scanning suite out there... works wonders for companies with lots of old paper archives.

My wife was unable to open wmv. files. When I go under Folder options and file types, wmv isn't even listed (seems strange). Somewhere I was told to run a reccomended Registry scan and repair program (the computer is slow also, geting more memory tomm.) anyways the program is Uniblue Registry Booster 2010. It found 328 errors, and would fix 15 for free and the rest if I bought it. Is it worth buying? Are there free ones out there and does this seem like alot of errors or is this common?

Answer:Looking for free registry scan and repair program

As you browse the forums you will find that Registry Editors, Registry Repairers, Registry this that and the next thing are very very seldom, if ever, recommended by those with experience in problem solving.  Remember that it is in interests of anyone selling Registry repair/scan software to tell you how good it is and how bad the state of your registry is.  It is unlikely that you will find any noticeable or measurable improvement in performance having paid for and used any Registry Cleaner, Optimizer etc...The only Registry cleaner type software in my armory is the one included with CCleaner (free from http://www.ccleaner.com/) but which I have never used.My advice is to steer clear of Registry editors/repairers etc...

I loaned my USB flash (Imation Atom 4GB) disk to a colleague; it was working fine when I gave it to her. She could not dismount the disk from her netbook, even after everything was closed. The computer kept saying the disk was in use. After 5 minutes of this, I pulled the disk out and put it into my machine.

First, Microsoft Security Essentials found and removed “Worm:Win32/Autorun.gen!inf.

Next, I was given the message "Do you want to scan the disk for errors?" I clicked 'yes' but got a "Windows can't check the disk while it is in use. Do you want to dismount the volume first?" I click on "Force dismount" and received a message "Windows can't check the disk while it is in use. Do you want to check for hard disk errors next time you start your computer." I check the box that says “Schedule disk check,” the box automatically closes. I re-start my computer, it boots up just fine, but does not appear to do any type of disk check.

I have no problems “safely removing the disk.” I can eject it every time without fail, but every time I plug the device back into the system, I receive the “scan and fix” prompt.

When I try to format the device, I am given the message "The drive is in use. Another program or process is using this device. Do you want to format it anyway?" I click "Yes" and receive the message "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or programs that are using... Read more

1. Hello. I would like to see if all data files in my computer are still healthy, i.e. they haven't been damaged or corrupt yet. Manually opening one by one is not an option. There are literally millions of files.

I knew the System File Checker but it is only for Windows system files. I want to check the health of all my data files. Disk checking, as far as I know, has nothing to do with file corruption. The drive can be healthy even if some files have been corrupt unrelated to drive failure reasons.

I tried to search on the net but couldn't find any.

Any method or workaround which could check for file corruption & errors, even if the check is not comprehensive or faultless, is much appreciated. Thank you.
2. I would like to ask whether there is any good program which could:
(A) *really* wipe specific files and folders irrecoverably
(B) *really* wipe the data of whole drive/disk irrecoverably
I hear that some programs claim it does but actually not (it's still there when you use the recovery program) so I want something which is really working, be it free or paid. Thank you.

Before my problem came out. my e: drive cannot be opened due to change in I/O thing as stated.... so i cannot use my cd drive now.... i absolutely have no idea bout this. This happens when an I.T. personnel from my work place tested a hard disk for servers... he said he just want to try if the disk can be detected by my pc since i ran xp pro sp2....

anyone can help me solved this problem. im afraid my pc might crash one day with this.I suspected also this reason.. im fun of trying new software in the net "the crack one", so i always download stuff from unsafe zones.. but i always update my security features.. i have avira free edition and superantispyware free version... i always update this and run for bugs and viruses and found none. But lately from frequent install and unsinstall of stuff a pop up came out stating that - " c:Program corrupted cannot be read please run scan disk".. but when i ran scandisk it will not continue... i use my pc disk doctor from my corrupted tune-up utilities 2008 to do the errors.. but it just happen that the program and my zonealarm firewall was removed or uninstalled without me uninstalling it after a restart from my scanning....

can anyone help me figure it out or solved this....

any suggestion please..... what should i do?... how to fix this corrupted error of c:Program

tnx in advance...

Welcome to TSF....

Since you are downloading from unsafe zones and apparently using a P2P networking program like Kazaa, Limewire or the like to do so I do not think there is a good chance that you are not infected with some sort of virus, trojan or the like please to follow the instructions below carefully.

Also having the recovery/restore software for the computer would be a great help, if you do not have it please contact the manufacturer of the computer and order it ASAP....

"TODO" is the new free program from Easeus.

It offers drive/partition imaging, cloning, and the ability to mount images and restore individual files/folders as needed.

I tested it on Windows 7x64.

It imaged a 25gb o/s partition in about 20 mins and the image size was around 9gb.

Mounting the image and extracting files was successful.

I have not ( yet) tried to restore the image.

Free Backup software for system backup & restore, disk or partition backup & restore in Windows - EASEUS Todo Backup

Macrium Reflect Free offers drive/partition imaging, scheduling, and the ability to mount images and restore individual files/folders as needed.

It is certainly faster than TODO - and compression is slightly better. It does not have a cloning function, but does provide scheduling.

I have restored numerous images successfully with the Macrium on x64 o/s.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Answer:Free Disk Image Program from Easeus.

The Macrium Reflect program took about 50minutes to backup an entire 465gb available 500gb drive seeing about 85gb of space used on a spare drive. That included all types of updates and other files stored in custom folders on the drive besides the Vista installation itself when first looked at.

Up until recently the now free for home use version was simply a shareware to try out until Macrium decided on making the free edition available. It's an excellent program and best yet "free of charge" there!

I've got the three recovery discs which takes it back to factory settings but formats and wipes everything. I want to only do a repair and still keep all my progs and data which you can't do without the single OS disc. Is there a free download which I can burn to disc?

Does anyone know of a good Windows program for creating hard disk images? I would prefer something that could also compress the disk image afterwards.

Also, does anyone know of a program that can backup files and folders in an automated fashion? So far the programs that I've been finding all have some sort of limitation (ie trial period/limited number of files).

Answer:Good (free) program for creating hard disk images/file backups?

I don't know about the hard disk images, I'd be interested in that though also.

For folder backups though I've found a batch files to be a good solution. I work from home and have had very bad experiences with losing data in the past, so I've been trying to keep daily backups as well as I can. I have a home fileserver and I work off my laptop.

On my laptop I have a batch file that creates a directory on the filserver (if the directory is already there, it deletes it), then copies my selected folders to that directory. This batch file runs at 4am and takes about 45 minutes to transfer a few gigabytes of data.
At 7am, the fileserver then RARs that folder. Through a few automated file renames, it also keeps the past 5 days of RARs. It's been working very well for the past few months.

The batch files are scheduled using the Scheduled Tasks in Windows. Easy to setup and doesn't take much (if any) extra resources.

I have been having an issue with Symantec Leaving my logs full with scan Omissions 99% of which are compressed. After doing considerable research I find symantec gives a nice list of possabilities and things to look into. Personally none of these fixed my issue, but it may yours. If Anyone has any Ideas to add to Symantec's offical list of reasons for scan omissions please do.---------------------------------------------The following is From Symantec @ http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s...002073015235648Event ID 6Solution:This event is typically encountered when any of the following occurs: You scan a compressed file that contains a password-protected file. The decomposer engine cannot provide the password required to gain access to the file, so it will be omitted during a scan. You scan files that have been locked for access by the operating system and access cannot be released to the scanner because the file is in use. You scan files that are recursively compressed to a depth that is more than the scan engine is set to scan. By default, the scan engine is set to scan a maximum depth of three levels (for example, a zip file contained within a zip file contained within another zip file). You scan files with LH7 compression, which is not a supported format. These compressed files commonly have an .lzh extension, and they are omitted by the scan. You scan files that are in use by another user. This is most commonly seen when you scan user directories and shared folders... Read more

I am looking for help with Vista and Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

I am working on an implementation of the wsd scan protocol on a scanner.

I have a documentation for the wsd scan protocol for the scanner side, but I do not have any documentation for the windows side, i.e., for the Vista/Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

In particular, I would like to know whether it is possible to change the timeout value for the RetrieveImage message. This message times out if no scan data is received in 30secs.
However, for higher resolutions scanner calibration can take longer than 30secs. For this reason I am not able to scan and retrieve the image at 1200dpi.

Other problems I have:

1. Often Windows Fax and Scan freezes. I have to reboot the PC.
2. Often Stop/Start of the WIA service is not relible. I have to reboot the PC.
4. WSD Scan discovery seems to be unrelible. Often when trying to scan a document using Fax and Scan I get a message saying that there is no scanner configured. However, at sturtup the scanner always sends a correct discovery message.

I will be thankful for any help.

If you need to contact ZA about a problem they may ask for them.Your #4.I don't see anything there to be concerned about either. It seems that ZA can't scan within archives, which many other AV's are able to do. Pagefile.sys is your swap file so thats never a problem. Your not scanning D: drive, is this a Compaq or HP? I get the impression you are looking for space on your drive. If so, have a look at Hiberfil.sys. If you do a scan and no problems are found you don't need to keep the log file for that scan. The logs for the scans that find problems can be kept for a while for diagnostic purposes. I would only keep the last "vsmon_2nd_2005_06_09_20_39_06.dmp.zip" for troubleshooting.

Hi,

The family computer is playing up and to the best of my knowledge the computer in question just simply suddenly stopped working as it should. I am unable to get the 'default' welcome screen upon start up and am getting the logon box where you type in a username and passworld. I know how to get rid of this, user accounts>enable welcome screen - but it will not solve the problem.

This is just the start of the problems. I get a whole host of errors which popup one after another. This is a summary of the errors which popup:
userinit.exe bad image
hpztsb05.exe bad image
psdiagnostic.exe bad image
vscplay.exe bad image
ituneshelper.exe bad image
zlclient.exe bad image
wcescomm.exe bad image

Once these errors pop up the desktop picture appears, but no icons/start menu are available. I have to ctrl/alt/delete then run a command (such as control or winword) then I get the icons and the start menu. However most programs cannot run at all, for example I cannot run Spybot, I get the error: 'SpybotSD.exe - bad image' 'The Application of DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\winspool.drv is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette'.

Basically I cannot tell if this is a spyware/adware/virus/HDD failure problem. I can however run AVG antivirus, and it finds no problems.

Does anyone know how I can get the computer working again? Thanks for any help in advance.

Thanks everyone for their help with this forum, its much appreciated.

I am in the midst of going through the tutorial posted above for cleaning out viruses and spyware, but am getting hung up with a question early on...

I ran the Symantec on-line scan as suggested in the tutorial. It found a lot of problems. But that is only a scan correct? You need Norton to clean them up?

So I ran my Norton 2003 with the latest update (March 2nd, I beleive) and it finds absolutely nothing, and I did a full scan?

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, any idea of what it is?

Symantec's online scan is just a scan, you have to manually delete the files.

TrendMicro's Online Virus Scan will scan and clean infected files.

Hey guys,

Over the past couple of months my desktop (a custom built gaming rig - 8350FX, HD7870, M5A97, WD 500GB, 8GB etc) has been having problems... It started with me getting "Windows explorer has stopped working" crashes, and those increased until I gave up and reinstalled Windows 7. This seems to have (mostly) gotten rid of those errors. I have also been randomly getting "Disk read errors: ctrl-alt-delete to restart" when trying to boot sometimes... I'm not sure if this is related though.
The major problem just happened today, when I started my computer and saw a Windows applying registry updates message (or something), then when I logged in I got a BSOD telling me there is a "REGISTRY ERROR. STOP: 0x00000051"... how sad
Doing some research on google that is apparently a problem with hardware or something, but I am unsure what hardware... CPU, HDD, mobo??

I am absolutely stuck on how to fix this... Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks, -K

Answer:Registry Errors, Disk Read Errors, BSODs... What's Wrong?!

Can you even boot back into Windows at all? If so you will need to run this command from a command prompt:

sfc /scannow

Let that run and see if it will fix your issues. Windows never applies Registry updates. There has not been a single update released via Windows Update that has made changes to the Registry that you talk about. So you have something more serious wrong with your machine. Sounds like maybe a infection.

Greetings, and thanks in advance for your time.I need help figuring out how to address my disk errors and file system errors. Will you please help me figure out a way to run chkdsk?I am posting a new topic here, at the instruction of my helper, HJT Team member 'extremeboy.' Answer:Unable to run chkdsk. Need to fix disk errors and file system errors.

Hi .Not sure why you would get that message when accessing the Recovery Console, that's typically a message that occurs when a user is trying to install XP on a SATA drive but the SATA drivers are not included in the install process.XP Tablet Edition is considered to be a superset of XP Pro...so there's no version conflict. That would seem to indicate that your hard drive is experiencing problems which Windows cannot solve.http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computi.../utilities.htmlI would use Version 1.12, but it appears that either of the first two will do the job.LouisDon't bother with the short test, do the long/extended test.

A disk read error usually points to a failing hard drive. A very weak power supply can cause the hard drive to run improperly too

Hi,

About 4 weeks ago my laptop suddenly froze and a blue screen appeared with a "kernel data error" message. Since then every time I turn my laptop on it comes up with a black screen saying "non disk or disk drive error." If I turn it off and leave it for about an hour it comes on normally and stays on for about half an hour until it freezes and I get the blue screen again. And so this carries on. Sometimes the error message I get on the blue screen is a "kernel stack error."

I am by no means clued up when it comes to computers and so please forgive me if I'm explaining things in a very basic way. Sometimes at the bottom of the blue screen it says "atapi.sys" followed by lots of numbers and letters. Sometimes it says "win32k.sys." It's also come up with "c000021a" and "unknown hard drive error."

I don't have any installation cd.

Is there anything I can do or is my laptop gone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please note, like I said, I'm not clued up so please explain anything in an easy to understand way

Thanks

Answer:Kernel data/stack errors, non disk errors

In my experience, the "win32k.sys." is a fairly common blue screen event. It's probably associated with something, a program or an update, that was installed on your laptop that altered Windows in an unacceptable way. If you aren't crazy about the idea of a new PC, you could obtain/purchase an installation disk for the OS, which is very cool to have anyway, and then run a Windows Repair.

Just would need to know the OS you are using to direct you to instructions for the repair. It's a very viable option that doesn't remove any of your files or settings. In XP it will remove Windows updates, but those can be easily re-installed...

I have had this problem before and encountered it numerous times. The repair option is great, but on the off chance it does not fix the problem, you are likely looking at a bad HD. Still, running the repair could fix the problem, giving you the ability to test your HD as a precaution with software from the HD manufacturer...

I was overclocking my A64 3500+ for a while, then I decided to run stock again. After that I started getting random BSODs a bit after I booted up (up to 20 mins after). If I don't BSOD, my computer seems to run stable for long periods easily. I think it may have something to do with my memory. Sometimes when I BSOD, my computer won't boot back up giving me a "Error loading into OS" error. In this case I usually turn off the power to my PSU and I can reboot into Windows normally. In the event viewer I randomly get this sometimes, it seems that my cables are secure though. "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D."

hi darius,

pretty awesome computer you got there. hmmmm......there could be a number of problems, which hdd is your primary boot drive? whichever one is it, try replacing the sata cable or ide cable with a spare cable.

also check out www.majorgeeks.com and download memtest86 from the memory category. then put the program in a floppy and bootup with it and test out your ram for any errors.

if you can too, install the latest chipset drivers for yoru motherboard, good luck.

Computer -> Right Click Hard Drive -> Click Properties -> Click Tools.

From there I get the Disk Check option. However After opening the file it does not run. No matter what is or is not checked the file will not run.

The program instantly closes out. Even when I try to set it so that it will run on the next start up. The file will close out without showing the confirmation box.

Now, when I do restart I go to my log in page, but not until after seeing a page for a brief moment, it looks like the page you see after completeing a disk check at start up.

Used the windows install DVD to check for errors in windows and to see if anything needed repairing, came back as everything was fine.

Any help is appreciated.

I am currently running:Avast! Free EditionWindows DefenderMalwarebytes Anti-Malware (free edition)Windows FirewallI don't like Windows Defender. I want to replace it with another, free, reliable anti-spyware program. What should I use? SOMETHING THAT IS CONFLICT-FREE WITH AVAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And overall, do i have good protection? EDIT: Apparently, Avast! auto-updates every 240 minutes, by default. I thought it updated immediately when there were new virus definitions? Can I set it so that it updates like this?

Answer:Best FREE anti-spyware program? (must be conflict-free with avast! home)

1) You cannot set an av to update when there are new definitions - how would it know? 2) I don't care for Windows Defender either and I always disable it on all of my systems. You're fine without it. The only thing I would add to what you already use is SpywareBlaster free edition. It does NOT run resident and you need to remember to update it about once a week. It blocks known malicious web sites. Other than that you should be fine.

I've recently installed a couple of new HP inkjet printers on Windows 7 machines, and for unknown reasons the scan to email feature does not work. Windows Live Mail is installed on both machines and set as the default mail application. Right clicking on a file and selecting "send to mail recipient" works perfectly, however the HP scan software gives an error saying that no email application is installed. I've Googled the problem and have found a number of discussions about it, but there is no solution so I'm looking for a third party scanning app with this functionality. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have a machine that is currently running Windows Vista 64-bit. It is connected via Ethernet to a scanner, the HP CM2320 to be exact. The software package includes a scanning application, simply called 'Scan', that can scan and then send the file as a .PDF to your eMail client, attaching the file to a fresh eMail. However, when I tell it to do so, it responds with:

"Your email application returned an error so the message could not be created or sent. Please try again."

However, no matter how many times you try again, you just get the same error message.

The application has no problem scanning and then saving the file to the local or networked hard disk, but just can't seem to attach the .PDF to an eMail.

Does anyone happen to have some tips or a solution to resolving this issue? I've scaled Google, but still no luck. I'd appreciate any advice!

Thank you.

Answer:HP Scan Application Can't Save to eMail

Is your Email configured for an internal Email program like Outlook or Windows Mail? Or do you go to Web mail like Gmail or Yahoo? The scanner should recognize your Email if you use an internal mail program like Outlook. here is more info http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...reg_R1002_USEN

An unwanted application called Power-Scan has loaded itself onto my PC ..Windows 98 etc. It doesn't appear in the Windows uninstall list, it won't delete, it disables 'delete with wiping' and 'easy uninstall'. It claims that it can scan my pc for porn - it 'found' 173 files none of which was porn - because I don't have any. It has an uninstall button but clicking that makes it try to go to it's website and I don't fancy that given that it won't go away.Oh yes, it came through my BlackIce firewall and my AntiVirus progammes say it isn't a virus. So, do I click uninstall and go to its website or is there some other way of getting rid of it ?Cheers.

Okay, so after clicking around to try to download a flash animation, I accidentally install some spyware stuff (Blame FileTube). I use the PC Decrapifier to remove it, and decide to run an AVG scan just to be save. Rootkits come back infected. "Okay", I thought, and I clicked "remove all". Aaaaand it comes back with "Cannot remove. Data is invalid". I run another scan, rootkits come back infected, I try to remove, same error on all of them.

On the free software disk with PC Advisor January 03, disk 2 had a Music file containing Capscan4 application. This allowed music to be scanned into the PC then converted into a MIDI file.Unfortunately, this application require an ID to use it. I have lost the Magazine now - has anyone got the ID number please? or, do we have to pay for it?

Hello!

So I recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium on an Acer Aspire 5349. I've been having a bunch of issues with it since the install.

Firstly, When I boot, it takes me to the "Disk Check" screen and tells me that one of my disks needs to be checked for consistency. However, the disk in question isn't something like "C:" or "D:" it's "\\?\volume{c4afec15-cb60-11e4-9583-806e6f6e6963}". The disk check also automatically cancels. It doesn't prompt me with the usual " Press any button to stop the disk check" option, just straight to " Disk check has been cancelled"

When I eventually get to the desktop, I get the screen " Windows detected a hard disk problem ". I look at the details and I'm told that my C:\ drive has been reporting failures. When I check the status of the disk via the Disk Management tool I'm told that all my partitions are healthy.

When I actually use the laptop, it's very slow and frequently freezes. It takes a while to catch back up and sometimes these freezes lead to a BSOD. The BSOD message was KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. I checked the event viewer and it also seemed that before certain crashes I would have driver controller error on an IDE Port. I've attached a picture of the disk check screen, event viewer, and memory dump. I apologize about the quality of the pictures, I couldn't screenshot the images on the actual laptop as it was freezing and crashing too often.

I ... Read more

As of late my PC has been going very slow, stuttering, freezing for a minute occasionally, and sometimes when I restart I get a disk read error that requires me to turn the PC off and on again. I ran check disk using command prompt, it got to 12% before it said it had found corrupt files, now it gets up to 37% verification before it finds corrupt files but cannot repair them.

I tried running system repair from the windows 7 disk, but it fails. I've used western digital to run tests on my hard drive, but there were no problems found.

dont know how to fix this now, i've been told its probably the hard drive failing but the scan says otherwise. I can really tell how it takes a lot longer to boot up, log in, even open internet browser takes a lot longer than before.

help appreciated

Answer:Check disk failing, disk read errors, blue screen, computer going slow

Are you running the Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first) burned to CD using WIndows Image burner, then booted to run the Extended Scan? This should give you a definitive diagnosis of the HD, which appears from the Disk CHeck to be failing.

If the HD checks out I would do is try a perfect test Clean Reinstall to the same or another HD to know for sure.

Urgent need to resolve this problem which renders Scan Disk inoperable:After some 15 hours scanning (1.5 million bytes), box appeared: "Cannot continue because a program such as disk utility has locked this drive. Close the program or wait for it to finish then restart Scan Disk".No idea which utility or how to correct it.Meanwhile I have found and downloaded EMSA DISK CHECK. In 20 minutes it scanned some 4.8 billion bytes on C drive. I have a 40gb hard drive that I got off a friend but it is quite new. I have formatted it twice and both times including install of xp it shows as 40gb. Once with windows ME and once with xp they both read the disk size as 5.25GB. Whats going on. If I try and do a scan disk it comes up with " windows must have exclusive access to drive" and does not do a scan disk. this is even in safe mode. This happens in my main pc as well. Any help om both problems would be great. Thanks

When I try to run Scan Disk on my hard drive it tells me it has "restarted 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable Scan Disk to finish." I have closed everything I know how to. How can I find out what's running and close it?

Answer:Can't run Scan Disk or Disk Defrag programs

Restart the PC and keep pressing F8 during the bootup. You should get a menu with 6 options. Take the option for SafeMode. Once in SafeMode run your defrag/scandisk. When it's done click on Start>Shutdown>Restart to get back to Normal mode.

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

Hi,we need to know which antivirus program does the most complete job for virus protection and removal--Avast free home,or ,Avg free.We know Avast adds 4 more programs to "task manager" than Avg does,so does that represent Avast doing a more complete job?
Thanks for any information

Answer:Avast free or Avg free--which is the most complete program?

They both detect viruses well, but in my opinion, and others also, Avast seems to be better at removing them. Select the custom installation option and you have the option of leaving out any of the four sub-programs. For instance, since I don't have Outlook, I didn't install the Outlook virus scanner module so I wouldn't waste storage and computer resources for something I didn't need.

I don't know if this is a possible malware issue or if it is an IE problem, but here goes.

I have recently started getting some popup errors when I am in IE (ver 6). The first one that pops up is "iedw.exe application error" and then when I close out of that one another one pops up "iexplore.exe application error". When I close that one then IE closes down.

I have run AVG antispyware and it found no problems.

Is it possible to have malware on here? Is there something else I should try running or is this a known problem with IE all of a sudden?

I appreciate any help and if this needs to be moved to another section, please do so.

Thanks

Answer:Application Errors

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sadly you have malware as vt100.exe and the 3115657985.exe all aim to malware, especially vt100.exe as its a rootkit, so read and follow the below.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Question: Application errors

Hi guys!

I'm a newbie here and I'm not entirely sure I'm in the right place to post this since there's some other subforums that also sound quite appropriate, but I just picked this one

To cut to the chase, I've suddenly been encountering some errors when trying to open (almost any) of the applications on my laptop. I'm getting "This application failed to initialize (0xc0150004) press OK to terminate"

This is how I think it started:

I was playing WoW and encountered ERROR#131 - I had contacted a game master about this error since I get it quite often, and I was told to delete the *** folder in my WoW interface folder, so I did that. When I tried to restart my WoW however my laptop crashed on the loading screen and they only way to get out of that was to hold down the power button in order to reboot. I then had to have a check (chkdsk? or something) when everything was loading up
Now, when my desktop loaded, my taskbar is blank and several icons are missing or distorted. I came up with several error messages saying that certain things could not be initialized. These included msnmsgr.exe and firefox.exe. I can't load anything except a handful of programs :(

I've tried a sytem restore and several reboots but nothing is changing.

After looking around a bit I've seen some people post a HijackThis log, would this be helpful?

I have to apologise for my lack of knowledge, I'm a bit of a computer dunce :/

Answer:Application errors

Hi kippler and welcome to TSF !

A HJT log wouldn't help here. You're likely to be dealing with corrupted system files, not malware.

What's the brand and model of your laptop ? Did you get an install/recovery CD with the laptop ? Is there some i386 folder on the recovery disk or somewhere on your hard drive ?

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer. Once the hard drive scan is over tell us what the results are. If you skipped the report go to start => run => eventvwr.msc. Go to the applications section and double-click the winlogon entry that corresponds to the time the scan was running, the scan results will be there (click once on the third button on the right to copy the info then paste it here).

Hi I am totally lost and think my only option may be to uninstall and do a clean install of my windows xp program. On 12/24/08 I was surfing the net and My McAfee program suddenly starts up and began removing my shortcuts from my desktop. I was unable to shut it down so I had the stupid idea of opening my control panel to try to unistall the McAfee program. Bad Bad idea as it took out most of my programs and settings there too. I was able to put most things back in except ie explorer is having major issues. I can not open any sub pages without the whole thing crashing. the other is about the same but with rundll32.exe

Whenever I try to start the program Modio I get this error: I also get this error at startup. I think they are related to the .Net framework. I have .net framework 4.0 installed on my Windows 7 machine. I have tried repairing the .Net installation twice to no avail. Does anyone know how to fix these errors so I can use these programs?

Answer:How do I fix these application errors?

Remove the offending applications, and reinstall them.

Question: Application Errors

Recently about 4 hours ago several of my applications started giving me the same error . I'm not sure why it happened or how, but what i've tried to do to fix it are virus scans, reinstallations, and spy-ware/ad-ware scans. The first started my ragnarok online game after i patched it. The error is

The application failed to initalize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate this application.

My operating system is windows xp.

Please help
Thank you
Ark

Answer:Application Errors

Which other applications are coming up with that error? You said several applications but you only mentioned ragnarok. But just off the top of my head you said it started after you patched the game so without knowing anymore than that I would have to say that's the cause. The patch overwrote something it shouldn't have and now the program doesn't work. That'll be five dollars.
