Hard drive doesn't wake up after hibernation

Question: Hard drive doesn't wake up after hibernation

When I restart my computer after it has been hibernating (usually overnight as it's left on 24/7), it goes to the welcome screen and just hangs. The HD light is inactive making me believe that the HD is not waking up and causing this problem.

Any ideas anyone ?

Preferred Solution: Hard drive doesn't wake up after hibernation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Any advices?

Hello everyone,  I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 with Windows Vista Home preinstalled, 2GB RAM and a Nvidia 7300. This notebook is barely 4 months old and suspension and hibernation worked well during this time.  I don't know if its the cause of the problem but one day I was working with the computer until I consumed all the battery, it did a loud beep and closed automatically. I plugged it to the grid but it didn't turned on until i removed the battery. After it restarted I put the battery back and it recharged well. The problem is that from this day on hibernation doesn't work properly.  When I hibernate the system (Fn+F12) it seems to do it fine, but when I try to restore the system pressing the power button it starts initialasing (I get to see the windoes vista loading bar) but after a few seconds it does a short beep (as if it wants to beep but the power goes off) the screen goes black and the system turns off abruptly. When I try to restart from this situation sometimes windows vista shows a screen where it let's me restore the state of the computer as it should do if hibernation worked well. But other times (the most) it doesn't detect any saved state and just shows the typicall options when your computer turns off unexpectedly (normal start, secure mode,...).  I have  vista service pack 1 from day 1.  I don't know what I can do to repair it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi all, I'm trying to run a .bat file on my T400 laptop every morning. i want it to wake from hibernation to do so (to save energy during the night). I've trying to use XP's scheduled tasks, and checked the "wake the computer to run this task" checkbox. and well... it doesn't work. when it is hibernating and the time arrives - the laptop just beeps (like it does when you turn it on or off) but it doesn't start. stays off.when it is in sleep mode and the time arrives - the laptop, and the OS is running. scheduled tasks indicates the job is "Running" but i don't see any sign of it running - no sign of CPU usage (this script, when run, gets the CPU to 50% for like 40 minutes), and no command prompt opens. can anyone help me to try to get it to run, and the wake up from hibernation as well?thanks!

I just got this computer a couple of days ago and all is going well except I am bonkers over the various options to sleep, shut down and revive.

I am set so it never goes down, as I want the screen on to monitor my navigation for long periods of time, in the power connected mode.

On the lid options I have it set to hibernate.

But here is where the fun begins. I has a mind of its own and does not always do the same.

For instance, if I lift the lid sometimes its dead and nothing will revive it.
The only option is to hold down the power button for several secs and get a cold shut down. Then press the button again and it boots in the previous state of windows.

Even stranger last night I shut down for the night with the
Start -> Shutdown and it shut down fine.
But came by in a couple of minutes and it had rebooted.

Did this a couple of times.
I took out the power cord and then it did not reboot.

I am trying to understand things before making a big case on phone so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite P305-S8838 doesn't wake up from hibernation & reboots sometimes

I have found the gremlin as for the frequent restarts from hiberation. In the BIOS there is an item, Wake up on LAN, or something similar and I disabled it.

So not it does not reboot and just stays in hiberation.

But the only way I can wake it up is to hold the power button done for several seconds until all the lights go out and then touch the power button again. It goes to Restarting Windows and comes back.

I felt that holding the button down several seconds was a cold shutdown and might be damaging things as in previous windows versions.

Is this now an acceptable procedure with Vista?

I am hoping someone can stop me pulling my hair out - please!!!
I have a Qosmio f20-136 which I have upgrade to 2GB RAM. I have successfully installed Visa Ultimate on it which actually runs very well. I get a Visa score of 3.4 which means Aero runs fine. The lowest sub score is actually the CPU (the 1.6GHz Pentium M) with 3D graphics coming in next at 3.9 thanks to the Geforce Go 6600.

I have an annoying problem though.
Hibernate works fine - it hibernates and resumes fine. I have the power button set for Hibernate at the moment and also the start menu power button.
If I close the lid it goes into sleep and when I open the lid it resumes perfectly. There is the sound of a device connecting / disconnecting when I open and close the lid.

However, here is the problem. I would like to use the power button for sleep rather than hibernate and I dont want to wear the screen hinges out by keep opening and closing the lid. So, I tried setting the power button to sleep and also tried selecting sleep from the start menu options. In either case the machine goes to sleep but then causes a problem when I try to resume.

The machine powers up but the screen is black. Everything else is alive but I cant see anything.
If I unplug the power lead and plug it back in (which changes the screen brightness) then it comes to life. If I close and re-open the lid it comes to life. Nothing else resurrects it.

Some may say I'm being picky as I'm almost there with vista but I would dearly... Read more

Hi guys, (first post here )... I was highly impressed with some of the deeply technical answers on this site, so I'm hoping someone can help me narrow down to the cause of this issue I have, and possibly help me learn something about system software and firmware

So some time ago I acquired this MSI P45 platinum third-hand, and it has been living up to its name. However, it does not sleep and wake up properly.

To be specific, it looks like it sleeps properly, but doesn't wake up properly. The lights and fans start up, but one of 2 things happen

1) the POWER LED doesn't light up, only the HDD LED (strange)
2) the POWER LED lights up, the HDD LED doesn't work

Either way, no display. or any activity I can cause through the keyboard. I'm on BIOS 1.7b14(official Beta BIOS) (A7512IMS.17E). It didn't work with 1.6(official release) either. It doesn't seem to be any known bug.

I've tried a bunch of things, but I would like to try steps systematically once again, in case I've missed some combination. So, what could be the issue, and what can I check?

Answer:MSI P45 Platinum doesn't wake after sleeping, hard reboot required

Hi, I have a new T61 widescreen, running XP Pro. My problem is that my computer won't wake up from hibernation. After I press the power button, it gets stuck on "resuming windows", and never starts, and i have to force it to shutdown completely and then restart it again.Interestingly, this only happens when I put it into hibernate mode myself, i.e. press Fn-F12 or go through the start menu; it manages to resume fine when it hibernates itself after 20 minutes of inactivity. As far as I know all drivers etc are up to date.

Actually, I got it going. I think it was a combination of low battery and hibernation. When I plugged it in and hit the power button it started.

T61 with Fn+F7 takes you to presentation manager. I can hibernate it through Fn+F12. It resumes pretty happily from that. However, I much prefer to hibernate it by configuring for it to hibernate by pressing the start switch (above F9 key on 14.4 widescreen model). I can do that pressing just one button, instead of two keys.

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

I have a Western Digital 7gig hard drive installed as the second drive. Frequently it will not be found when the computer boots. About the other half of the time, all works normally.

The problem first becomes apparent when the BIOS looks for the drives. It will hesitate for a LONG time, then find the first drive, and not find the second drive. If this happens, the drive activity light will stay steadily lit for as long as the computer is turned on - no blinking, always on.

Can anyone advise me, or give me a good guess, whether the problem is likely the drive, power to the drive, or the IDE controller?

Thanks!

Got an Inspiron 6000, XP home sp2. When I let the battery run down (or whatever) and the puter hibernates it won't wake up and keep the files that were still open. I basically have to reboot it and find that everything is gone. Yes, I have low battery alarms set, but sometimes I underestimate the time it takes to get plugged back up.

Is this a hardware problem? Puter is still under warranty.

Is this a Windows problem?

I just need some general direction, don't know where to begin w/tech support if it is a hardware problem.

Thanks!

Answer:wont wake up after hibernation

Are you saying that you keep using it until the battery is flat and shuts down from alck of power...or as you say hibernates and when you get the main power back on or restart it you files are gone that you were using?

You can go to Control Panel under power Management and set the alarm to warn you way before it gets that low....if it gets so low then your files won't be saved

Hi all,

Sorry to be a pain, but could someone tell me how to bring my P30-119 out of hibernation. The blue light around the power button is on, the orange light below tht is flashing every now-and-again and the middle of the three green lights is on.

I normally just press and hold the power button for a few seconds, but i don't think that does the machine any good and thought i had better seek some advice.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Answer:Hibernation - Cannot wake my Satellite P30 up

Hi

Normally by pressing the power button the unit should wake up from the hibernation mode. As far as I know these mode settings you can change in the Power Management tool. In this case please check the settings. Furthermore you can read the Power management help for more information about hibernation mode.
This info should b placed in the user manual.

Hello,

I noticed something strange and I don't understand the reason for that.
Ive got my Win7 machine set up to go to sleep after 15 minutes of idling, after another 15 minutes, it wakes up for a sec, dumps the ram into hibersys file and goes into hibernation mode.
It all works ok but the strange thing is the wake-up times. From sleep mode, it wakes up almost instantly obviously. From 1-2h hibernation mode it shows me the post screen, 'resuming windows' screen for 3-5 seconds, the 3-5 seconds of cursor flashing in upper left corner and then desktop... BUT after ~16h of hibernation, it can take up to 2-3 minutes for it to wake up. The 'resuming windows' takes much longer and the flashing cursor thing takes long enough for me to think it hung up on me.

I pretty much understand the technical side of hibernation mode. Thats why It seems strange to me - It shouldn't make any difference whether it hibernates for 1h or 15h. The ACPI state is the same, there are no changes done to the system during that time. It looks like it needs to warm itself up after longer periods of hibernation but its microelectronics, not tube radio.

If anyone got any idea, maybe a way to change it and make the wake up times more consistent, I would be really glad because it bugs the hell out of me.

Also, I could check it myself but I would have to change my power plans :P. If I allow hybrid sleep, go to sleep and then to hibernation - will it wake up to dump RAM do HDD or will it just, after ... Read more

Hi,

Basically my PC is refusing to wake itself up from hibernation (or standby) as it has done in the past. It seems like the actual task I schedule to run DOES run, but the PC stays in either hibernation or standby mode and doesn't bring itself to life. I've tried searching the Net but I haven't had any luck finding a solution so I thought I'd ask here!

I did have to restore my C: drive from a backup a few weekends ago as I installed Kaspersky AntiVirus and it basically made my PC unusable so I ended up formatting the C: partition and restoring it from my backup (going back to avast! in the process). However everything else seems to be working OK so I don't know why it's refusing to wake itself up! :-(

I'm only doing what I used to - using Scheduled Tasks and ticking the box 'Wake the computer to run this task' - but it's not working. The same tasks run fine while the PC's in 'normal' mode and my laptop has no such problem waking itself from hibernation either.

I really need to get this fixed in the next week as I go away on holiday on Friday and want to use the PC to record programmes while I'm away.

System details as follows:

Hardware: Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS, ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe ACPI BIOS Revision 0706 (21/08/2006)
Operating system: Windows XP Home SP2

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm thoroughly stumped at the moment!

Thanks
Steven

Maybe you could also try to disable hibernation, reboot the computer then reenable it.

My Lenovo E 540 is new. Not wakes up from hibernation, blinking red LED just above the letter "i".I did downgrade USB 3.0 to 2.0 in BIOS, but not entirely work. I have a user that has a T400s running windows 7 pro. I do not have any issues with the computer going to sleep or hibernation or resuming from either. The issue is when the user either puts the laptop to sleep or if he lets it go to sleep (by default at 7% battery remaining), the computer never wakes from sleep to go into hibernation (by default at 5% battery remaining) to do a clean save of the environment to the hibernation file and power off the system. I have other laptops that I setup this way and it works no problem. The user is able to just let the computer hibernate or put it in hibernate manually to get around this, but sleep is a much preferred option due to the speed in which it will resume from sleep. I have updated the Power Management driver to Thinkpad PM Driver 1.60.0.4. The BIOS was updated to version 1.13 and I set the BIOS power settings to "Timer Wake with Battery Operation = Enabled". I also installed the Power Manager 3.12. I contacted Lenovo support and told them what I have done and they said that it should work, and they asked me to run diagnostics using the Toolbox and if that came up clean then to reformat the machine (this is a brand new setup) so I received no help there. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

I live in a place where we have power shortages from time to time. I have my Dell desktop pc attached to a UPS and i have configured the pc to go to sleep after 5 minutes when on UPS. Is there anyway to wake up the pc automatically once the power is on? I have connected my UPS with USB cable to the pc, and the pc treats the UPS as a battery. I use this pc as a media centre so this feature is something i really need.
I am on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Answer:Wake the PC from sleep/hibernation when power comes up

With it being a Dell the option may very well be hidden (with no way to unhide it), but have a look in the bios under the Power options for anything relating to "restore on power loss". If it is there it is likely set to disabled (the default on most if not all motherboards), set it to enabled and that should do it.

Greetings,

Using HP desktop with Windows 10. Latest Fall Creator Update installed.

After the latest update my machine wouldn't wake up after sleep mode. The screen is blank although I can hear "rumbling" in the background as if the hard drive were indeed on but I see nothing. I have to shut down manually and restart. The Power Setting remained on Balanced since I first purchased the computer last year and it always woke up. I tried changing the power options to "put the computer to sleep: Never" and that works. But obviously this is not a solution, just a delay, and I don't want to stay with this "never" option. I have also read that one can turn off Hibernation but again, to my mind, this not a preferable option to the existing problem.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

PS. Oh, and what does "Post a Poll" mean on this web page?

Answer:Sleep/Hibernation wake-up issue

There are many threads on this problem. Start by turning Off Fast Startup (this disables hibernation, by default). Turn On your preferred Sleep settings and test for a couple days. If this fixes it, you can turn off Hibernation in a command prompt (admin) to delete the hiberfil.sys taking up space by typing powercfg -h off then Enter. I know this means Shut Down vs Hibernation to save power but I've had this setting for a long time, as do many others, and no wake issues anymore.

I close the lid of the laptop and the computer goes to sleep.
I open the lid and the computer says its exiting hibernation, and a text status bar goes across the black screen (before the Windows logo shows up)
Once the bar is full, the computer stops responding.
This started a few weeks ago intermittently, now it does it every time.
I have to hold the power button to turn it off, and when I restart it, it asks whether I want to delete my old restoration data and start anew, or pick up where I left off last time. (Option 2 usually has the same results as the original exit from hibernation)
So far its just an extreme aggravation. Once its running, everything works like before.
Anybody know what's up?
Its a Toshiba laptop, about 3 years old, running the original install of WinXP Home with SP2. If any more info is needed, I'll provide, but I can't think of anything right now that would be relevant.
Thanks for the help,
-Geoff

Answer:WinXP freezes on wake up from hibernation

Regretably its not uncommon for PCs to die in their sleep in this manner under hibernation.

Hibernation and Standby modes under Windows are problematic at best, but most laptops seem to cope to varying degrees (but fewer desktops will run the modes with success).

Its likely to be a driver issue, have you updated any recently?

Try reloading the latest Toshiba drivers for XP for that model laptop (they should be available to download from their website). Video, chipset drivers etc.

Not the BIOS update unless its specifically stated as a cure (if a BIOS update goes wrong your laptop becomes a doorstop).

Speaking from many years of experience with laptops (6 or 7 different types) I gave up on using anything but a full shutdown, you can change the "lid down" settings under Power options in Control Panel. I set mine to just turn off the screen, and I did a shutdown if I was not going to use it for a while.

I also found that odd problems with programs disappeared when not using standby or hibernation, overall reliability was vastly improved.

Answer:BSOD when wake up from hibernation/sleep

0x116 bugchecks indicate an attempt to reset the graphics card and display driver failed to respond within the allocated time interval.
It's mainly caused by a failing GPU or bad display driver.

I suggest updating your display driver to the latest version.

I also recommend running Furmark to see if your GPU is failing (I doubt it but it's worth ruling it out as a possibility).

I recently completely wiped my hard drive because there were a lot of problems with it. I had to update and install a few drivers but every thing worked fine, 120% better than it did before. But last night told it to hibernate and i couldn't get it to wake up. The screen is blank nothing works.

the cd/dvd rom starts up and then shuts down a few seconds later. the mouse pad and the keyboard don't respond to anything. the only thing that works is the touch pad for volume, play, pause, stop etc... I've tried draining all the power from the pc (as well as the battery) but it doesn't start up all the same. It's about a year old and doesn't have any special software.

It has Microsoft Office 07, spybot, iTunes, and that's it.

If anyone has a solution or even a suggestion, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

Did you try to recover your OS with the delivered Toshiba recovery CD?
Usually after this procedure all functions should works properly.
Before starting the OS recovering you should save all important files and data. Make a backup.
It would be very interesting to know if this problem occurs after OS recovering.

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

Hey everyone!

First of all I'm glad to see TenForums is around, SevenForums way back when saved me more than a few times and was consistently a quality board

So I configured my PC and network to support Wake on LAN, and after a long time trying to get it to work I can finally send a magic packet from anywhere connected to the internet and wake up my PC from sleep or hibernation (not power off because my router doesn't allow for static ARP routes ).

The problem is: If I put my computer to sleep/hibernate and wake it up within the following hour or so, everything is fine. If I wait longer than that and wake it up, the computer's lights turn on for a split second and then fade away. I then have to turn on the PC manually.

If I'm using sleep, the lights fade away, and when I turn it on after that, it turns on for 5-10 seconds and shuts down. If I turn it on again, everything is fine.

If I'm using hibernate, the lights fade away, and when I turn it on after that, it stays on.

I have tried powercfg -h on and off, I've disabled hybrid sleep, I've updated my BIOS and Intel Chipset and Management Engine drivers. There are no settings for the PC S states in the BIOS that I could find. My NIC is set-up to not be powered off by the system.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

Thank you guys so much in advance!

I've just bought a new Satellite A200 27U which so far is going great.
However, I have it set to hibernate mode when I close the lid.

I can't get it to resume automatically from hibernate when I open the lid.
I have to press the power button.
Is this normal, should it resume automatically?

If so how do I make it do it?

Answer:Satellite A200-27U does not wake up from hibernation when opening lid

The same is with my Satellite P200 and I think it is normal. The same is on my second WXP preinstalled notebook.
Start up is not ?automatically? and after opening the notebook I must press power button too.
But it cannot be so problematic. What you think about it?

Do you use WXP or Vista?

If I were to let my computer go into sleep mode, if I let it go alll the way into it, I cant wake it up without having to turn it off and back on and having to log back in, not to mention losing open browser windows/tabs, and any other work.
Same with Hibernation, except, I cant stop that....
The simple answer would be to set it to not go into sleep or hibernation, but thats not a solution, just a temporary remedy.

Does anybody know some possible causes or other reasons?
or at least how to fix it?
I know Im clueless.
Edit:
Some extra details.
When I try to wake it from hibernation, my laptops lights will go on. All but the screen, and I know its not a monitor problem. Same thing with sleep mode, The lights will stop blinking, and be on, but the screens just blank.

Answer:Computer doesnt wake up from Sleep/Hibernation

Hello ComputerTalk-Jayson,Hybrid mode is to have the computer go to sleep first, then after the time you set will go into hibernation. That is why it is taking a bit longer since your computer is resuming from hibernation and not sleep. For you what you want, you would need to set your Power Plan settings to "Sleep" and turn off "Hybrid" and "Hibernate" like in the recommended "Sleep" settings in the tutorial below. Afterwards, the computer should wake up from sleep and be ready to go in a second or two.Power Plan Settings ChangeHope this helps,Max

How can i stop this from happening?

Hi

I think you should try to update the BIOS.
On the Toshiba European driver page you will find the compatible drivers and the BIOS.
So firstly try to perform the BIOS update and then check if it helps.

About 2 months ago I started noticing that my w7 professional x64 box loses its internet connection on every other wake up from hibernation.
I can connect to my local LAN but not further (I am not using wifi but wired connection).
After digging into it I found that ipconfig shows two gateway entries the 1st is 0.0.0.0 and the 2nd is the correct gateway.
I have no clue where the 0.0.0.0 comes from nor why there are 2 gateways shown.
ipconfig /renew doesn't help, but disabling the network interface and re-enabling it again fixes the problem.
Also a reboot fixes the problem.
Both solutions are only workarounds though.

I hope someone can tell me how to fix the problem.

This is an issue I've had with my laptop from the start - if the laptop is put into sleep or hibernation mode and the lid is closed, or the lid is closed and it goes into sleep mode from there, it will not wake or respond to the power button once opened again.

Even holding the power button has no effect, the only way to get it to turn on again is to remove the battery, put it back and turn the laptop on again, losing anything I had open.

I'm afraid the laptop could be damaged by this but there's no other way.
This isn't an issue with windows settings as I've had the same problem with the suspend function in ubuntu.

Anyone had similar issues or know of anything that could have caused this?

Answer:Satellite won't wake from sleep or hibernation once lid is closed

What Satellite L model do you have exactly?
What system is preinstalled? Did you test this issue with fresh recovery notebook?

Is BIOS up to date? If not update the BIOS.
After the BIOS update, set the BIOS to default and test the notebook functionality.

Feedback would be appreciated?

Hi, I have a w520, with a 128 SSD in the main slot with the original 500 HDD in the UltraBay. On wake from hibernation the system tries to eject the drive.  I have tried a few solutions:1. Windows 7 rebuild from scratch2. Format HDD 3. Disable Write Caching4. Install Intel RST The rebuild worked until I did a driver update at which point the problem resurfaced. Help would be awesome, thanks all!

Answer:W520 Ejecting (or trying) UltraBay III HDD on Wake from Hibernation

Hi. By ejecting do you mean disconnecting? Just wanted to confirm. I have a drive connected to the external eSATA port and was getting disconnects/reconnects until the drive finally did not show any longer in RST.  Sounds like your problem could be the same (it just started happening to me yesterday for some reason). I am trying the latest Lenovo RST drivers to see if they make any difference. What version of RST did you try to update to? Do you have the latest RST drivers from Lenovo? There are also some SSD related fixes (not sure if just for RAID though) in later RST versions than Lenovo's so you may wish to also try other RST releases. There are some posts on the RST drivers in one of the other threads here in the forum. Shouldn't be too hard for you to find :-).

Answer:Satellite L500 - no wake up from standy or hibernation

Hi

Are you able to boot the notebook and to start Windows OS?
If not, try this;
Remove the battery, disconnect AC adaptor.
You have to wait some time? about 2-3 hours.
Then connect both parts again.

But if you are able to boot the notebook but if the standby mode and hibernation mode would still not function, then you should try to reinstall the OS again.
In most cases such issues are OS related.
For that I recommend using the HDD recovery mode.

In Windows 7 and for the entire life of W10 I have used the command cmd.exe /c "exit" to awaken one of my computers at 0600 each morning. I hibernate the computer each evening when done using it. The computer would awaken at 0600 and stay awake.

Since installing v1703 the computer awakens but unless I perform some operation manually, returns to hibernation in a few minutes. The exact same thing happens if I have a program (Acronis True Image, for instance) wake and perform a backup from hibernation at a given time.

The power settings are as I used previously: Sleep in 30, Hybrid Sleep Off, Hibernate Never, Wake Timers Enabled. Note that the computer isn't just going to sleep because 30 minutes passes. It returns to hibernation as soon as the particular task completes.

Any ideas how to restore the pre-v1703 behavior? Is there a new setting someplace that I have missed?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have been having a severe problem with my L40-PSL40E:

If I put down the screen I couldn't restart and had to reinstall Vista! After some updates it was alright for a few months now I lost my entire harddrive AGAIN!

Friends told me it has something to do with hybernation modus or bios (?) and to download some bios-driver?

But the link of 11/02/2008 is not functioning

Answer:Satellite L40 PSL40E does not wake up from hibernation when lid was closed

The link to the BIOS should works... I have visited the Toshiba European driver page and the links work definitely. Maybe you should try it again.

Generally it's not a bad idea to update the BIOS and the OS to the latest state.
The Vista still includes many bugs and you should check the from time to time if an patches and hofixes were released.

In the next time the SP1 should be released and you should install the final version (if available).

I have had my Satellite Pro L20 laptop for a year now and it has been getting slow recently, especially when starting up after being in hibernation mode.

It is now not even turning back on. I had placed it in hibernation mode and then when I tried turning it on again, it hummed as if it was starting up but the screen remains blank.

I don't think it is communicating with the rest of the laptop. I have tried rebooting it several times but I still can't get it out of its inactive hibernation mode and the monitor is just not responding.

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

Hi there,

I am running a Windows 7 64-bit setup, and I'm trying to get a timer to wake Windows from sleep or hibernation.

I've got it to work flawlessly on my desktop, however on my laptop, a Dell D630, I can't seem to get it to work. I've created a task triggering on a specific time and running the operation '/c "exit"', which should just start a command prompt and close it again. I've set it to "run with highest privileges" and "wake the computer to run this task". However, it just doesn't boot as scheduled.

The history of the scheduler says nothing at the moment that the trigger is set to go off, but a minut later (probably when I manually boot) I get a "Task scheduler "{....}" instance of the task "\Wakeup" due to a time trigger condition."

What can I do to fix this?

Thank you.

Answer:Scheduler fails while trying to wake Windows from sleep/hibernation.

Hello and welcome to Seven Forums.

Some things you can try for testing:

Turn off "run with highest privileges" - you shouldn't need it for this task

Try different setting combinations for:
"Run whether user is logged on or not" / "Run only when user is logged on"
"Start the task only if the computer is an AC power"
"Stop if the computer switches to battery power"

Compare each page in the Task settings between the Desktop and Laptop.
See if you can find some different setting(s) that might cause this.

If you logon with a Standard account when the computer sleeps, try using an Admin account.

Hope this helps,
David

I searched high and low for a solution to this issue. In windows 7 Pro I was able to put my N585 into hibernation at work, drive home, start up and continue to work where I left off. I have a 2nd N585 that I upgraded to windows 10 first before upgrading my main laptop. That computer will emerge from hibernation just fine. Once I felt comfortable with Windows 10 I upgraded my main laptop to Windows 10. It will not come out of hibernation. I have to hold down the power button and restart and I lose all the work I did prior to the shutdown. I have formatted the drive and installed a fresh WIn 1o install and the problem continues. All drivers are up to date. I ran test utilities on the RAM and all is fine. This is very frustrating. I have enen istalled a new SSD Hard Drive to see if it will fix the problem to no avail. I have spent 2 weekends formatting and reinstalling my software to fix this. Any and all help would be appreciated. I believe this is a hardware issue with the BIOS since I have done a virgin install of the OS.

This happens 95% of the time. sometimes it DOES work though. anyway, I looked through all the internet...or just about..and cannot find anyone who has found a cure yet. these are the symptoms.

When you go to sleep, or hibernate, when you try to wake it up, it gets stuck on a black screen for about 8 min. then restarts.

if you press shut down, it says "shutting down" and stays there 8 min. then restarts.

i have not been able to find a cure..please help.

also, i uninstalled all the windows updates from the past only leaving one. i unintsalled because i thoguht it might fix the problem and i would just search for updates so that i could get rid of the extra updates and only get the most recent updates. but now, i have no updates and when i press search for updates, nothing comes up. can anyone teach me how to reset so that any updates that apply will reappear? because i believe there are updates that apply, but since i uninstalled it, it is not going to show up on my updates list again. please help. thanks

Are you hitting the shut-down button just once and not holding it down? One quick press should take the puter out of hibernation.

Folks, Like many of you I've had the dodgy DC connection problem and I've resolved this a while ago by re-soldering the errant joint on the jack to motherboard interface.

All was well with the laptop until yesterday when I tried to get the machine to wake up from standby / hibernate mode whichever it is when you close the screen) and now all that happens is that the blue LED around the power button is illuminated, the CPU fan spins for about 5 seconds, the HDD light flashes once maybe twice and the DVD drive briefly spins up.

Beyond that nothing else happens... the screen is blank and the laptop is effectively not starting from the occasional whirl of the fan.

Is there anyway to perform a reset of some kind to get it to snap out of hibernate mode? I've read up about this on various other forums and have tried starting it without memory, without the HDD and without the DVD drive and still no life.

Any input is appreciated as I need this laptop to spring back into life again.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite M30X-111 would not wake up from standby/hibernation mode

Hi there,

to wake the machine up you just have to remove the battery and the AC and let the machine stay for a couple of hours. After this, it should work again.
By the way: It?s sometimes a good idea to make a biosupdate, because maybe the problem is just coming from the bios.

Please give some feedback about your success.. :)

Sometimes when I resume my computer from hibernation, I come back to it (after going to make a cup of tea whilst it boots up, for instance) to find it off again.

I have since observed it more closely and discovered the following: if I resume from hibernation and do not touch the mouse or keyboard, the computer will load up Windows but then hibernate itself again immediately.

If I move the mouse pointer at some point whilst Windows is finishing loading the desktop, etc., then the computer doesn't automatically hibernate.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution?

My Yoga 3 Pro won't wake up from sleep / hibernation, the only sign of activity is the keyboard lights just blinking, AGAIN! :-(. This is a common problem with Yoga 2 13 models I have learnt, not only from various boards, but also my self, when I returned a yoga 2 13 after 5 days, and got the Yoga 3 Pro model. The laptop is now only 6 months old. I experienced the same wake up problems 3 weeks ago with my 3 Pro, and the shop here in Copenhagen sent it back to service. When I got it back 4 days ago, the service team had just changed "Cinch Audio" and updated the BIOS. It seems like they never really fixed the real problem. Two days ago the computer again had problems to wake up, and now it seems to be frozen in this blinking mode. I I have tried hard reboot (holding the power button for ca 20 secs), but it won't solve the problem. Has anyone experienced the same problem, and any durable solutions to it? If it stays like this, I'll hand it in, try to get it reimbursed and I will gladly buy another computer, but not from Lenovo anymore.

After some time away from the computer, it seems to be sleeping or hibernating (I don't know the difference). The screen is dark. Sometimes, I can wiggle the mouse or pad and it wakes up, but now, I have to hold down the on/off button and power off and restart. I went into Power Management and turned off everything I could. I've tried using the FN keys. Hibernation is unchecked. I'm so frustrated. The troubleshooting was useless. And I called Lenovo twice and got a complete runaround. My computer is to be having some problems booting when it has been asleep/hibernating/turned off. At first it seemed to be just when it had been asleep or hibernating, but recently it wont boot after being turned off for a short while (an hour or so).

What happens, is that after turning it on, I get a "No signal" message on my monitor, and nothing shows up on it. The computer turns on, it makes the usual noises, but no signal comes through to the monitor.

The only way I can seem to get it started after this is if I leave it unplugged for a while, usually at least an hour and a half or so, then it will either boot from scratch or resume Windows from sleep/hibernation.

I never have the problem turning it on at the beginning of the day when it's been off all night, so it's as if it needs to be off for a long while for some reason.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD A10-5800K and Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H, with 8GB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Answer:Windows wont wake up from sleep, hibernation or turned off for a short time

Before going too deeply into this, if the light on the monitor is lit, try a different cable.

If you are experiencing the S10 with Vista crashing upon resume/wake up from LONG TERM sleep/suspend/hibernation there is some help from Microsoft here: Microsoft KB Microsoft KB1 The second article is more detailed in identifying the correct registry key. This problem with the S10 seems related to the usbvideo.sys driver used by the built-in Lenovo webcam so you have to find the registry key in your S10 associated with the webcam. According to the articles it is a problem with Vista and it exists in other laptops/desktops and other usb devices. These articles may also help if you are experiencing this issue with WIN7.

Hi all, Sometimes, when I come out of sleep or hibernation, the brightness controls Fn + up or end keys stops working. I recall this is handled by the BIOS / firmware of the laptop but it seems like the OS messes things up. I also understand that the OS does interface with this BIOS level feature as it adds the HUD display with the green bars (which also stop working when this problem occurs). Does someone know which service is responsible of handling this under Vista? I could look the task manager but without knowing what I must look for, it is not easy to restart this service. Edit: I just did an experiment. I put the laptop in hibernation using fn + F12. I let it turn off then powered it back on. Using the Fn + up or end worked while in the initial loading screen (the one that says windows is starting with the scrolling bar). Then comes the login screen. Once I was in my Vista account, the Fn short cut was not working again. So it really sounds like Vista is overriding the firmware behavior. Thanks for any help. Message Edited by marcbe on 04-06-2008 05:36 PM

My computer failed to boot a few weeks ago. I took out the C drive and put it in an external drive case on my other computer in order to retrieve outlook emails, bookmarks, etc. The drive is 250 gigs. It only shows an 'N' drive, 130 gigs worth of data, which must have been a partition. The C drive isn't there. Is it corrupted? Will be I be able to retrieve anything from the C drive?  If the drive is corrupted, why does one partition show up and not the other?

Answer:Hard drive doesn't show C drive, but shows the other partition

I had a similar situation. I was able to get data off the drive using a Ubuntu live cd. Burn the iso to cd, put the drive back in the computer and boot to the cd. If you can see the drive in Places then you should be able to get your data off. Please note the "if" and "should".Good luck.

I'm having the same issues as this lady. I have two IDE hard drives from older computers that I want to try to recover data from. I got a new enclosure all set up, plugged the first drive in (Drive 5), and it doesn't register under My Computer. I right click My Computer, go to Manage, avoid initializing/formatting the drive, and find that it's offline and unallocated. This is what it looks like.

I right click the drive listing (left side) and click Offline, hoping that'll bring it online. "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Right click the right side, and I see "new simple volume, new spanned volume, new striped volume, properties, help." The latter two are clickable, the rest gray. I do everything the 'net tells me to do: change the jumper to Master, clean it with compressed air, restart the computer, restart the enclosure, reinstall the enclosure driver. Nothing changes.

I try plugging the enclosure into mom's laptop, and "offline" is now grayed out when I right click the left side of the drive listing. On the right side, "new simple volume" is clickable now, but my friend says that will also initialize the drive and erase everything, so I didn't try it. Apart from these differences, everything was exactly the same.

So I use the steps in the thread I linked in the beginning, hoping that the data recovery tool might be able to access the drive. When it scans all devices, however, the enclos... Read more

Answer:new hard drive enclosure, drive doesn't register

What kind of enclosure did you buy? The drives may be genuinely unusable, or it might be a problem with the enclosure.

When I want to salvage data from old drives I use this old tried-and-true Kingwin SATA/IDE->USB 2.0 adapter. Very inexpensive (so you can try it out yourself for minimal cost investment), but very reliable in my own experience. If you have a very large drive (e.g. SATA) that you want to access, it might be worth considering their USB 3.0 version for just a few dollars more because of the much faster USB 3.0 transfer speed.

I wouldn't give up yet on your IDE drives yet until I'd given this other adapter approach a shot. Never failed for me.

I plan to install a new HDD. I want to clone the old one onto the new. I have the necessary wires connected (done this before) but when I go to Start>Computer> I see the existing C disk displayed but not the new one. I disconnect the new one and attach an older drive I use for backup. It shows up immediately.
I disconnect it and reconnect the new one- nothing!

But, when I have the new one connected and I open WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic, it sees and will run a test on the new HDD. I tried Hard Disk Sentinel and it sees the new HDD. But Win7 won't recognize it.

Is there something I need to do to activate the new HDD so I can begin cloning?
John

Answer:My PC doesn't see the new hard drive

Is the new drive formatted? Try formatting it first before cloning.

Hi there!

Today I just bought a new Barracuda 7200.7 Seagate SATA 200 GB hard drive and when I took it home I realised that it doesn't fit into the cords that I use. I think it may be because my computer is too old and new computers use a different sized cord. Could someone please tell me what I should do?
Do I need to buy the cord seperately?

Thanks

Answer:new hard drive doesn't fit

sounds like you've bought a SATA hard drive but your pc only supports PATA; change the drive for the right one or fit a SATA PCI controller card.

I believe my daughter got something on her computer. It started with security alerts from Norton and Windows. Evidently it graduated to the point that Norton will not load up. MBAM would not install even if I tried to change the program name. As I have been down this road before, I put in the Windows XP disk and rebooted with the intention of reformatting and reinstalling the OS. I get a blue screen saying "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" and then it instructs me to run chkdsk /F. Since I the hard drive on this computer was a bit small anyway, I bought a new 1TB hard drive. I started up the PC with the XP install disk and I get the same blue screen message. I checked the XP install disk with another PC to see if the virus had written something on the disk, but it doesn't look like the dates on any of the files were updated.
Could this be a BIOS virus?

Answer:New hard drive doesn't help!

What is the actual blue screen error you are receiving?

Please post the error that is reported usually this is located around the bottom of the blue screen.

Hi,

I noticed an odd problem with WIN2K and I'm wondering if it means there's spyware on my system.

The "Used Space" byte figure reported when I right click the hard drive does not equal the total file size figure when I select all files, including system files. There's a difference of about 64 megabytes.

Does anyone know why? Is it some sort of hidden system files that the user interface can't even see, or do I have other problems?

Answer:Used Hard Drive Space Doesn't Add Up

It's not spyware. There are some files that can not be accessed through Windows that are on the hard drive.

Help! my windows dvd doesn't see my hard drive with my os. No installation media for it. I know it just uses the MS driver but repair wants installation media. I put all my system 32 drivers (folder) on a usb stick but repair doesn't see any drivers in it. It's a Sandisk ssd plus 240 Gb.

Answer:windows dvd doesn't see my hard drive

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
From this tutorial
SSD - Install and Transfer the Operating System
Prep the ssd or hdd for install,

Quote:
Prepare the SSD – You first have to initialize the SSD to create the MBR. You can do that with Disk Management or with this program (which you will need later anyhow).

Then you need to align the SSD and define an active partition on it. You use an elevated Command Prompt with the following commands:

Diskpart
List disk
Select disk n (where n is the number that was given for your SSD in List disk)
Clean
Create partition primary align=1024
Format fs=ntfs quick
Active (assuming you want to install an OS)
Exit

I just did a fresh re-install of XP and for some reason I'm having trouble with my second hard drive. Its already formatted and contains 2 partitions which were working fine before the re-install. I have the jumpers set correctly. In the disk management section of the device manager, the disk shows up as health (active) and online. It has not been assigned a letter and XP won't let me assign one. Before I re-installed the OS, I reformatted my C drive but I didn't reformat the slave drive. Any ideas?

Thanks
Trevor

Answer:XP doesn't see slave hard drive

HI, This happens quite often and I do not know the answer. On this computer it has happened twice, once when I bought it and all the shop could do was reformat the drive. The second time I did an install and the same thing happened and I also reformatted the drive.

Do a search as this question has come up umpteen times or if it does not matter reformat the drive and see if this helps. Sometimes PM is blamed. Peace Mal

Answer:Hard drive doesn't seem to Detele??

Run this program ( WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics ). It will tell you exactly what`s on your HDD. Depending on how you did the reinstall, you might also have a windows.old folder which is huge and should be deleted. Additionally, with such a big drive, you also have a very large shadowstorage (up to 15% of your C drive). You can check that if you go into elevated Command Prompt and type vssadmin list shadowstorage

I just bought a computer a few weeks ago and I put in a 120 gig Western Digital hard disk (IDE) from my old computer. The problem is that the new drive doesn't always show up in Windows XP. Whenever I do a cold boot it won't show up. However, as soon as I restart it shows up (ie. appears in My Computer). The drive is always recognized in the BIOS, just not always in Windows. The other drive that I use is a SATA drive and it works perfectly. I never had any problem with it whatsoever when it was in my previous computer. Any idea as to what could cause this and how to fix it?

Answer:Hard Drive doesn't always show up

I say, try to reformat the HD (if you can). You can back it up before you format. It might solve the problem. GOOD LUCK.

I transplanted my 20 gb hard drive from my old computer into my new one. It had Windows 98 on it. My new system has Windows XP(Home). I configured the jumpers and powered up. In the BIOS everything checked out like it should. It started up into Windows XP and seemed to work. I clicked on my computer and there it was, my extra hard drive. But then It said Windows ran into a serious problem and before I could do anything it restarted on it's own. Then it boots up again and runs into a "serious problem" and restarts on it's own. Could it be the clashing OS's or is a power problem? I have a 350 Watt case, which I thought would be sufficient. What else could be causing this?

Thank you,
Tom

Answer:New Hard Drive doesn't work?

The power supply is ample so that should not be the problem. What it may be is the old drivers from the old computer on that drive. Try booting in safe mode and see if you can get into it (old hard drive) and remove the drivers from the old computer.

Hello,

First time here, first post. This looks like a great forum. I think I'll be visiting a lot.

So here's my issue: I boot off of a SATA drive but use an IDE for a second drive for backups. On some boots it sees the drive and on other boots it doesn't. It seems to be running 50/50.

Any idea what could be causing this and how I might increase the odds to, say, about 100%?

Thanks!
Mark

Hello,

I just wanted to report how I solved this issue.

I made the connection about the problem and the Acronis software after lots of Googleing and reading I eventually found this post:
Take a note everyone and Acronis - - Wilders Security Forums

I looked at the drive in question in Device Manager and saw this...

Those two lowest driver are from the Acronis company. I had installed their virus on my computer to create an image of my old drive to my new. However, an uninstall will not remove everything.

Their software leaves behind unasked for, unwanted hooks into your hardware that through improper manual removal can render your computer unbootable.

Their virus also slows down your hardware which is why the drive was not beeing seen on boot but was was found after a rescan.

Acronis provides manual uninstall instructions here:
Wilders Security Forums - View Single Post - Remove True Image totally?

However, following those steps closely and slowly twice caused me not to be able to boot. Twice I had to go... Read more

Answer:Sometimes Win7 doesn't see my IDE hard drive

Hi Mark,
I kinda had the same setup except it was 2 SATA drives. One drive ran the OS and other was backup drive. Well problem was the backup drive was physically going bad. So sometimes it would show up in windows explorer and other times it did not. I ran HDdiags on the backup drive and it failed. Sent drive into Western Digital for exchange. Put the new drive back in and worked fine everytime.

Check your Windows Event Viewer and see if you find any hard drive related errors in there.

I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I'm using XP media edition with all upadates and have 2 hard drives in my system. One hard drive is partioned into C and F with C being the system drive. The other drive is labeled G. Suddenly G drive can't be accessed. When I go into the computer management then disk management it shows the 3 drives, C, F, and G. It says that all 3 are healthy but it doesn't show a file system for G, nor does it say that it is active. When I try to open the drive I get told it's not formatted and asked if I want to format it. Which I don't because my back-ups aren't as current as they should be. I tried System Restore and was told that it couldn't restore the system because it couldn't find G drive. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Ron

Answer:XP suddenly doesn't see a hard drive

I don't know if this will work since you've tried a system restore or not but hti F8 at boot up and select last known good. This may bring the drive back to life. Otherwise you'll have to use a date recovery program to get what data off the drive you can.

I've been having this issue with my laptop after installing a newly formatted drive where XP refuses to install. I know about the AHCI/SATA issues, but my laptop has a Phoenix BIOS which doesn't allow me to change any advanced BIOS options, including disabling AHCI. Help!

Answer:XP Doesn't Recognize Hard Drive

I had the same problem on my HP laptop awhile back. After loading all the drivers, the installation said it couldn't locate the hard drive. I also thought it was a SATA/AHCI problem. After fiddling with all sorts of drivers, I switched "SATA native mode" to off and that's what worked. Hope this helps.
