I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Virtual memory - experts is this a good set? image included

Hello hkop, welcome to Seven Forums!

As it looks as though you're using a 32-bit Windows 7, it can't access more than about 3.6GB of RAM (or so) to start with so it's best left at "System Managed".

Am working on a friend's computer and the problem is two-fold (so far). The computer takes a long time to boot and when its running it seems to have to sit and wait (or think) before it accomplishes things. I've run the onboard virus checker (Norton), downloaded and ran AVG virus scanner, PCPAL, and both updated versions of SpySweeper and Ad-Aware on the system, checked it to see if the HD needed to be defragged (didn't need it) and even made sure that the disk wasn't getting too full (76% empty).

I included a HJT log so that someone could give me a hand here as I'm running out of ideas.

Hi, I was just wondering, if you disable your virtual memory, is that safe? Lately I have been having a lot of problems with my page file usage filling up and slowing down my computer immensely. Also random processes seem to keep adding themselves on O.o. So I was just wondering if disabling virtual memory (which also in theory disables the page file usage) is a good idea/safe.

BTW, I have x2 512 sticks of ram, "dual-channeled". I have checked them for errors with memtest and there were no errors after 7 passes.

Answer:0 Virtual Memory. Good or Bad?

Just for your information, I had some old problems with ram, needed to do 26 passes to pick up an error on a 512mb stick of ram.

Question: True Image experts

Is it normal for Windows search to be able to search inside Acronis image(.tib) files? I was searching my external drive where my tib files are and noticed it was searching inside the image itself. I could tell by watching the folders it was going through, Windows, system, system32, program files, etc...which aren't on my external drive obviously, only in the image of my C drive which is on the external. Acronis also created a shit load of log files in the log folder after I did my search.

Answer:True Image experts

There's no reason why they couldn't be searched but for that to work a couple of things would need to be true. First the tib files would need to have clear text or there would need to be a search filter for them. And also tib files would need to be set up to be indexed.

Go into Indexing Options and see it tib files are set up to have their contents searched.

I asked this once before but never got an answer...

I would like to know a good layer 2 or layer 3 switch to buy. Ive looked into a few, but I want to know what a good one would be for the money, a good buy...

the features I need:
*10/100
*8 ports or higher (yes 24 is fine)
*solid contstruction: if possible, metal and RM but not a necessity
*NOT linksys
*QoS/bandwidth limit/bandwidth guaranteed per port or IP (at least one of the listed, more is better)
*web interface
*SMNP or whatever stats monitoring

I DO realize that this will cost me A LOT of money, but I am willing to shell out for it. the reason I am posting is I want to know what you IT pros think is the best bang for the buck (model & brand name) that has the things I want...

and I did do research but I just do not know enough to be able to judge which would be the best for what I need...

USAGE: I have dual broadband, I am running a single everything server ATM plus 3 workstation/gaming PCs. I am expanding this as I can afford it into a full service provider, web/http/file hosting, game server hosting, pretty much what PlusLabs does I want to get into. I want to use this router to help me manage the bandwidth usage for each server and monitor it all. Mostly, I will be running a windows environment, so OS level bandwidth limiting/monitoring will be nearly impossible.

please keep this thread on topic? I really need help here...

Answer:IT experts - please point me to a good L2 or L3 switch!

Dell's switches are very solid and reasonably priced. Check out the PowerConnect 3324.

If you need something more robust then take a look at places such as Cisco, Extreme, and Foundry. In my opinion though, it doesnt get much better than Dell as far as value is concerned. We heavily utilize their 5212 and 5224 gigabit Layer 2 switches and have never had a problem with them in 2+ years. I hear much the same about the 3324.

I have used Drive Image XML for years and never had a failure to restore.

Now, I have a problem with the program and cannot figure it out. When I open it to create a backup, it only shows my external hard drive and a "MagicJack" as being available to backup. When magicjack is removed, it still will not work.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program three times and it does not help.

I am running Windows 7 and Windows XP (dual boot). It works in the Windows XP partition but not in Windows 7. It used to work OK in Windows 7 but I had to uninstall the program and reinstall it. After than, it stopped working properly.

Any ides for a cause or cure?

Thanks

I could get one with more L2 cache like 1meg and probably some better video for the same price but it would be smaller and have less of the other option. What is L2 cache exactly anyways and would I notice a big difference between 512 and 1meg.

I installed Powerquest DriveImage 2002 onto a WinXP Home machine. When I attempted to make an image of my HD the following happend:

The machine rebooted and gave me two error messages after the POST but before Windows reloaded:
Err 5: Error Finding VFloppy.sys
Err 8: Fake Floppy driver not found
Press any key to boot from partition.

I pressed a key and the machine simply rebooted (no image created). So I gave up, uninstalled DriveImage.

My Problem: I still get that error message everytime I boot the machine. I checked the system.ini, boot.ini, win.ini files and there is no mention of anything related to DriveImage. Further, I ran msconfig and booted the machine in a selective startup without processing the system.ini, etc. I still get the error msgs requiring me to strike a key to continue. Any suggestions? Thx in advance.

Answer:Calling All Powerquest Drive Image 2002 Experts

I'd reinstall DriveImage and then do another uninstall without running it. This may fix whatever they've screwed up.

They're trying to boot a "virtual" DOS floppy volume, so I'd suggest looking in BOOT.INI in the root of C: to see if that's where the errant entries are that are causing you to see these errors.

Of course, you could also contact PowerQuest and ask them how to fix it...

I suggest Norton GHOST, I've had much better luck with it than other imaging programs. I recommend you check out Norton System Works Pro for $10, hard to beat the price! I've had to install a bunch of these for customers, so I have a small stack of these CD's I bought. FWIW, this package includes GHOST 2003, the latest and greatest, and I highly recommend it.

Brand bew Asus P5Q Pro motherboard (no cheap trash here!) with 2 sticks of new Crucial BL12864AA804.8FE5. Refused to complete the Vista install so tried again with a couple of sticks of Kingston - no further problems.
Checking the Asus book of words is says that Crucial BL12864AA804.16FD or BL12864AA804.16FD3 is approved.
Is the difference enough to make the board reject the memory??

Answer:One for the memory experts perhaps?

I'm tied up tomorrow so I'll make my friday post today;

2 things-

1 - every single QVC stick at 2048 on the list is DS (double sided).

2 - there have been 2 Bios updates regarding Ram; is yours the latest?

I have 2 extra 256k PC2700DDR (333) memory sticks which I can add to 2 vacant slots on my Granddaughter's PC, the other 2 of which are populated with 2 512K PC3200DDR (400) pieces. My question is: will 1.5G of 2700 memory be better (faster) than the 1G now of 3200 memory - I am well aware that the 3200 will downclock to the 2700.

BTW, in my PC, 3G of 3200 memory (2 1G and 2 512) runs at 333 whereas 2.5G of 3200 (256 instead of the 512s) runs at 400. Why? This may have been covered in one of the many posts here, but I couldn't find it.

Answer:Solved: Memory experts

The experts seem busy, so let this noobie answer the question he knows about

Memory size always prevails over memory clock IF that extra space is used. The reason is simple: no matter how slow the memory clock is, it will always be faster than virtual memory on the HD (which kills the HD faster too).

If she's running anything like Vista or Win7, going with 1.5G will certainly be an improvement. Assuming the sticks work well together, of course.

I'm having problems with Searchmaid/Virtualmaid and the maddening pop-us it seems to bring with it. I've managed to remove the toolbar that was installed but am still getting the pop-ups.

The pop-ups take two forms:-

1. An unprompted pop-up in the centre of the screen advising me a various problems which can be corrected by clicking ok. This then takes me to a site advertsising spyware removal etc........

2. A flashing "!" in a yellow triangle in my task bar. This advises me of various things when it arrives, including spyware warnings, malware, credit card detail theft............... When I click on this it takes me to a similar site re spyware removal software.

I'm running Norton System Works 2005, Adaware, TrojanHunter, a2 Guard, and have followed the recommendations in the following post:

http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t=338679

But I'm still getting these two types of pop-up.

I have a Cisco 2501 EN model router. I want to upgrade to a newer IOS (12.3) so I can run IPv6. But, it only has 8 MB of RAM, so I can only upgrade to 12.1.

But, here's my question. Can I use ANY 8 MB SIMM (as it has a 8 MB module already)? Or does it have to be a Cisco SIMM module? I have a LOT of older 72 pin SIMM's, but the Cisco one costs $50. For that price, I can just buy a whole router on eBay.

Thanks!

EDIT: BLEH! Nevermind. I'm retarded. It's 80 pin. My bad. GRRRRR. Off to eBay!

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

So I would like to know please, would adding a gig of DDR2 RAM in each slot speed up this computer considerably? Or would it be a waste and I should save my $?

Or if I do add the RAM, should I also play with other settings to help speed the computer up? If so what are they?

Sometimes for no apparent reason the processor starts working overtime, i can tell cause of the noise it makes. I wondered if the current %'s had anything to do with it?

Its slow if there are many applications open at once. I cant run Creative Suite CS4 on it at present either. Think it may need a new video card but unsure of what to buy.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here. He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR. Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking. He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB. After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated. The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB. I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

Answer:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

As soon as I fired up Sony Vegas 13 and started to record (setting up the microphone was a whole other issue), I was presented with a Low Memory Warning (in Sony Vegas). Personally I think I should have adjusted the Virtual Memory ages ago (Win7), but here we are with Win10 and I want to get off to a good/better/best start.

I went into the Virtual Settings, with little clue as to the optimal settings for what I needed, but I fiddled through it so I could get Sony Vegas to work as I need to get a project out today. Based on the Virtual Settings image linked, what is the best settings I can use with 12g of RAM?

my current setting of virtual memory is 745mb which is the default for 500mb i have.

i have a little program that shows memory and virtual memory, i see while in windows about 256 is beeing used in my memory stick and 256 in virtual.

why is the slow virtual memory working before i ran out of good and fast memory stick?

Answer:virtual memory, why is it beeing used while i still have free memory?

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

Hey all, I'm wondering what's the scoop on Virtual Drive 7. It allows you to load your game cd's onto a virtual drive so you can play them without having to swap cd's or insert cd's.

I'm just wondering if it's going to suck the life out of my RAM and CPU, or is it really a good piece of software that I could load 20 cd's worth of virtual drives on.

Thanks for any advice or feedback, StratMan23

Answer:Virtual Drive 7 - Good or Bad?

I haven't used that app myself. But the concept is fine. The only downside to doing it, is it takes up a bunch of extra HD space. Plus a lot of games have copy protection, so it won't work for many of them. RAM isn't an issue at all, as no extra ram would be used. It also has the added bonus of loading things much faster. Since the virtual CDroms are actually on the HD instead of a CD thigns go much quicker.

I think daemon tools is a much more popular program for this sort of thing though.

One that lets you create virtual copies of physical CD you can put in virtual CD/DVD/ drives. I had one called virtual drive, but not all my CD/DVD's would work with it. I'd put them in the drives and wouldn't see them/react. I hope the newer ones can recognize more CD/DVD's.

Hello world,

I created a Windows 7 Backup Image using windows' backup software in 7 Ultimate x64. It was an image of my laptop saved on my external hard drive. My internal died and I am trying to get data off of that image.

I am trying to run that image in Virtual PC 2007 on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 desktop. However, there are two ".vhd" files. One is about 45MB and the other is about 95GB. Choosing either to be the hard drive for the vm results in an error message asking for boot media.
I need this to work.

Please help!
Thanks in advance!

Guys,

Maybe I've started something that isn't possible to do, but here's the deal. For quite some time I've been wanting to do a clean install of XP Pro, configure it, patch it, install apps, add drivers for my desktop & laptop, Sysprep it, then make a Ghost Image of it. Not wanting to wipe my desktop or laptop to do this, I thought I could use MS Virtual PC to do this. I've created the Virtual PC, installed XP, done all my changes and additional apps, and now I'm ready to sysprep and ghost it. I'm not quite sure on how to accomplish this with the Virtual PC. I've done some Googling, but all of the pages I seem to find are talking about going the other direction, taking an existing Ghost image and restoring it to a Virtual PC. Anyone who has done this or any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Ghost Image of Virtual PC

I don't' think this would works since ghost talks to the HDD itself (I create my images from command line outside the imaged OS). Perhaps it's possible with the newer method of creating the image with the OS up and running.

I would get another HDD and create my images there, leaving your current OS intact on it's drive.

Hello.

Several days ago I decided to locate and delete duplicate files on my PC prior to transferring my libraries to a second SSD.

I've got two SSDs and 3 HDDs in my setup and I want to rationalise, possibly putting the HDDs as offline for backups etc.

Anyway, prior to all this I decided to take a system image(as you do) and during that backup I notice that it included one of the HDDs(G drive) along with the system disk(C drive) in the system image. I have no idea why it is doing that and I presume that I will need to keep that particular HDD on board.

Any ideas of how I should proceed to exclude the G drive from the 'system' please? Obviously I don't want to have to do a complete reinstall..

Thanks
John

Hi Guys,

I have recently bought a new computer and have experienced 2 BSOD so far.

Once while playing a game and the other when I came back home and woke the computer up. I took the picture of the BSOD for more information, it's attached to this thread.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit and it's OEM. The software and hardware is new, only 2 weeks old.

Any help will be appreciated as I have just got this machine.

It seems to be doing this more regularly recently. It's done it twice today so far; I'm not playing any games, and it seems to be doing it at random intervals (but it doesn't happen often). This is a static photo of it as it was 'moving around', so to speak [can't explain it].

On a side note which may be related, is that my monitor sometimes adjusts its resolution to something else while still keeping its 1280x1024 res (from what I've read happens from a Google search) - the screen goes blank for a second, the the desktop text looks very slightly blurred/out of focus.

Could my graphics card (or monitor) be on its way out?

Hi Gaz1701, Certainly looks like it's the monitor, have you tried degaussing it? If it has an OSD look down the list for degauss

I bought a game, Oblivion, without realizing that it required a dvd Rom drive. On my gaming computer I don't have one, but my brother's computer does, so the question is would it be possible to use his computer to make an image, then use a virtual drive to run it?

Note: I didn't put the post in games because it doesn't have as much to do with the game as it does with the imaging..

If I can't, Oh well, I'll get a dvd rom drive. I'd just rather not spend the money right now..

Hello, I am looking for a way to get an old ghost image to work on Virtual PC 2007, and it appears that VPC creates the Virtual system correctly, but then it hangs at the Windows 2000 Pro SP4 start up after the progress bar at the bottom goes from dashes to solid. I am guessing that this is because the image was created of my P2 400Mhz CPU system and the system running Virtual PC 2007 is a P4 3.0 Ghz CPU.Does anyone know if there are any mods for VPC to tweak the image into thinking that the P4 is a P2 or if there is a better solution out there for getting images to run correctly on systems with major hardware difference, but still the x86 processor? Thanks,Dave

Can anyone answer this question? I looked in System/virtual memoery and it tells me I have -858mb od memory which seems strange as I have a 60 gig hard drive. The computer keeps locking up and I wonder if this could be the cause? I have Windows ME installed.

Answer:Memory misreading in virtual memory

First port of call, run scandisk beause this could simply be an errot in your file table reading the drive space wrong, this would also cause your pc to lock up.Second, get a decent opeerating system an burn your windows me disc and most of your problems will be solved ;-)

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory. In addition to DRAM ,Operating System uses this virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we can save the cost of physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

Answer:virtual memory and memory usage i need to know

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!
DLBerry

Answer:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

Answer:query about memory or virtual memory

Is it on a different partition?

<<If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?>>

Not sure what "it" refers to.

IMO...users should just let XP manage the pagefile size...I have found no advantage from any other arrangement (and I've tried several).

How much RAM is physically installed in this system?

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

Answer:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

Answer:Virtual Memory is Low - IE eats up my memory

Bit more info would be useful - what computer and OS etc.Virtual memory with Windows is a paging file set up automatically as ''extra memory'' for large tasks - but you can change its settings usefully if careful. Otherwise leave well alone. It should be there by default - nothing to 'install'.I am thinking 'Virtual PC' is some form of emulator but others can enlighten you on that.

I posted this on the MS forums but found this to be a much better source of experts, so I'm hoping someone here can help me with this:

I want to create a system image of my C drive for backup purposes, but when I use the built-in backup tool, my D drive is also selected and I can't uncheck it. My D drive is filled with videos and stuff and I really do not need that backed up.

This should explain:
http://stuff.digicrap.com/backup.png

Is there a way to check why this is marked as required for the system? Is there a way to make it so that I don't have to backup that drive?

This might have something to do with it: http://stuff.digicrap.com/backup2.png Any ideas on how to change the system tag from D to C?

Thanks!

(original thread here: Why is my D drive included in system image? - Microsoft Answers)

Answer:Why is my D drive included (mandatory) in system image?

It would appear d drive is the bootmgr drive and thus no backup of the system can be properly made without including it. This is why it is tagged as system.

Unfortunately I do not know a way around this that doesn't involve both changing the physical location the drives are plugged into the motherboard at, but also a reformat.

Basically what happens is windows drops the bootmgr on whichever drive the system sees as drive 0.
This is determined by where the drive is physically plugged into the motherboard it is not determined by software, but rather by the system bios.

I believe this to be the cause of your problem, though I am not 100% certain.

Answer:What's a good program for makeing virtual drives

Microsoft has a little known and free virtual drive emulator that works great. It's very small and lightweight but officially only works with XP, unofficially with 2000.

Free Virtual CD ROM for Windows XP

Follow the "read-me" file exactly and your all set.

There are three tricks with this free emulator:

1) It only runs on XP and unofficially Windows 2000.

2) Your CDs have to be converted to ISO files.

3) Most types of copy protected CDs cannot be used by the emulator.

I was thinking of buying HP DV6-6120TX, which consists of Intelģ Coreô i5-2410M and 4GB RAM. So How good will this setup for running

Virtual PC consisting of Windows 2003 server with Sharepoint? Will it run smoothly or do I need a Quad?

Answer:How good is SB Core i5 for running Virtual PC and Sharepoint

I would definitely do more than 4GB of ram. The VM itself can easily take up 2GB. Also make sure the host system is 64 bit because you'll need that for increased addressable memory (4GB+). The CPU, it supports VX-t which means it's compatible but it's only a dual core so while the VM is open I wouldn't expect great performance in either. It would be doable for sure though if the task were not to intensive.

After having a busy couple of months building computers for friends and others, I noticed that ?after construction? problems seemed to centre around computers that had two sticks of memory.

The memory I installed was the same (two sticks ordered at the same time eg two 512meg sticks). In one case, not yet knowing that the memory may be to blame and going through the endless process of component substitution, I replaced the two 512meg sticks with a matched pair from my own computer (my computer has dual channel RAM and I had two matched sets installed, 2 gig total).

Problem solved. I also noticed that memory read errors disappeared from my home computer at the same time (windows server 2003/gigabyte 8KNXP Ultra 64/3.2 gig Prescott).

I had also noted that memory read errors never occur after my computer has been switched on for a day or two eg it has been constantly on for weeks now and no memory read errors after the first few hours.

So here is my conclusion ? for single channel RAM, always get matched pairs anyway and enjoy a crash free environment;
For dual channel with more than one set of RAM, try swapping one pair. Alternatively, try leaving the computer on continuously. You can switch the monitor off and leave the computer idling, or better still, donate your spare cycles to a good cause (eg SETI).

In Sum:
The faster the RAM, the more critical the matching even in single channel systems. Leaving the computer on may in itself facilitate matchin... Read more

I am preparing to go to Windows 8 but I teach a lot of workshops. Most of the time in the workshops, my students use virtual images that I build.

If I build an image on Win8 in hyper-v, will my students be able to run this image on their Win7 boxes? They will be 32bit images. If they can't, I'm pretty much hosed since I have to be able to provide images that can be run on Win7 for quite a while.

I believe Hyper-V images Can be converted back to VM's that Virtual PC can handle on the W7 boxes - but it's a task as far as I can see that is NOT for the fainthearted.

Threads from THIS Forum should put you on to the right track.

Migration from MSVS 2005 to Hyper-v and the reverse

Test the VM's yourself though on a W7 box --remember also that VMware and Vbox products can't run on W8 while HYPER-V is enabled and the reverse is true too.

Here's how to convert to VMware type vm's too -- this could be a better idea than virtual PC since VMware player is FREE and reliable so the client W7 machines shouldn't have any problem installing VMware player.

Convert Hyper-V to VMWare - Blog

Converting the SharePoint and Office 2010 Information Worker Virtual Machines to VMWare from Hyper-V ? Geoff Varosky's Blog

Good luck with it -- please post how you got it to work if it all turns out OK. There are tools around from converting one virtual image to another -- but you won't simply be able to take the HYPER-V virtual machines and boot them up into Virtual PC just "as is".

Hi,

I have just taken an image of my computer and used Norton Ghost to convert it to a VHD file. After going through a mini-setup type configuration wizard in which I do not have any option to activate Windows or input a valid product key, it leaves me at the logon screen.

My first and main problem is that when I try to log on, it tells me Windows is activated. I used BartPE to overwrite logon.scr with cmd.exe and ran %systemroot%\System32\oobe\msoobe /a. The activation window appeared and told me that my copy of Windows was already activated. I have manually edited the registry as told on Microsoft.com to "deactivate" my copy of Windows to no avail.

As well as this, I was wondering whether it is possible to transfer the domain of my physical computer onto this virtual machine as well. I accept that this is probably not possible as I would assume that the virtual machine would need the exact same hardware as my physical computer, but if it is I would like to know how.

Thanks,

Richard

I work at a company that has custom billing software. It only runs on Win98. We have one old Win98 machine that is only used for this software. Is it possible to install Virtual PC 2007 on an XP machine. Take a disk image of the Win98 machine. Boot it up in Virtual PC and use the billing software that way? The problem is I don't have an install disc for the billing software. So it would be hard to do a fresh Win98 install in virtual machine and then install this software would it not? Plus all the data that is on the original 98 machine. Is there any way I can do this?

Answer:Can Virtual PC 2007 use a disk image from another computer?

You could prob use true image or ghost or something and make an image of the 98 machine and then restore that image to the virtual pc but you would prob have some work to do with drivers and whatnot. Another option would be like using pc relocator or something to try to copy just that app and use a fresh install. That may or maynot work.

As far as moving the app without doing a reinstall it may be possible. Best people to ask would be the software vendor if they are still around.

I have a few clients running windows 98 virtual pc images running old accounting software. Really helped us out. Haven't moved anyone to 07 yet though.

I'm in need of a new video card! I really don't know anything about computer hardware, so you'll have to help me out.

I am a gamer, and my video card sucks (I have a GeForce4 440), and I can't play any new games such as Battlefield 2. Even older games such as Battlefield 1942 and America's Army quit in the middle of gameplay all the time.

I have been making money recently, and can now afford a very good video card. I am willing to spend $200 - $325 for a video card. My computer is good enough for a good card (at least I think it is).

I have an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard with 512 MB ram. My CPU processor is AMD XP 2500 OEM (just as good as the pentium 4.)

I was thinking about getting the famous Geforce 7800. Is this a good idea? Will I need more ram? Will it fit into my case (ATX XP400)? Also, what are all these different types I'm seeing (7800GS, 7800GT, 7800GTX)? What are the differences?

Thanks.

Answer:How to change wifi icon back? Image included

Welcome to the Seven Forums

How did you change the icon?

Do Option 2 of this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have. You may need to do this up to 3 times with a reboot after each scan.

Then do Icon Cache - Rebuild

And maybe Notification Area Icons - Reset

Did a quick google search but came out empty, where can I find a legitimate (I'm a Dreamspark Premium member) Windows 8 Pro Image with the Cumulative Patch already included in the .iso?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows 8 Pro Image with the Cumulative Update patch included?

What cumulative patch - did I miss something?

I haven't got win8 installed atm.

You can put the updates into your installation image easily enough - just pop the .msu files in with dism.

Win7 dism will do it fine.

Hi,

If you created a backup on an external HDD WITHOUT selecting the Include a System Image of Drives box at the bottom of the Backup & Restore Window via Control Panel, is it possible that BY DEFAULT Windows 7 includes a system image in that backup? Is there a super-compressed version of the system image hiding somewhere in the backup folder?
If so, where in the backup folder would it be stored?

By the way, the method of 'backup' was by copying and pasting the Administrator's folder
to an external HDD.

THANK YOU for your assistance!!!

Answer:Is a System Image included in Windows Backup by DEFAULT?

Hello Largy,

Sorry, but no. If you do not check the Include a System Image of Drives box, then a system image will not be included to be created along with the Windows Backup.

If all you did was manually copy and paste the Administrator's folder to an external HDD, then that is not part of Windows Backup.

I use Daemon Tools. I don't know if there's spyware in the latest version. Maybe you can do the job with extractor? Such as 7-zip.

Hello,
Firstly, I'd like to apologize if I am posting in the incorrect section.
I download Microsoft's Virtual CD-ROM, Download Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel from Official Microsoft Download Center
And followed the instructions in the readme.txt file
I get an error, "The handle is invalid" when I try to add the VCdRom.sys on step #4.
I'm not exactly sure what I am doing wrong.
I would prefer to use a Microsoft product, rather then a 3rd party tool like Virtual Clone Drive, or whatever else similar to it.
Has anyone else tried this Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM tool and gotten this error?
I am running Win 7 Pro x64.

Answer:Mount Iso image using Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel?

Iv never used it but it is not supported my Microsoft so I would just use clone drive, imo its he best unless you have something like deamon tools already. Try running the installer on step 4 as admin, that error normally means you don't have low level access to the file your trying to open. I use clone and deamon for refrence.

Re Virtual PC 2007 - How to install Win98SE or get it to read image of old laptop HD with Win98SE?

On my WinXPPro SP3 desktop, I would like to run Windows Virtual PC 2007 and "dump" into it my entire old Win98SE laptop, so that my old Win98SE laptop will live forever.

I have no Win98SE OS disks to install the "guest" OS - the only source for the OS is my old Win98SE laptop. What to do?

This is what I have done so far:

I have run Clonezilla on my old Win98SE laptop to make an image of its entire hard drive on an external drive.

Then I re-connect the external hard drive to my new WinXPPro SP3 desktop. The first time I am using Virtual PC 2007 on my new WinXPPro SP3 desktop, I am successfully getting Virtual PC 2007 to boot up off the Clonezilla iso file, so that Clonezilla can run. However, Clonezilla/Virtual PC do NOT see the external hard drive and therefore cannot "restore" the old laptop image into Virtual PC 2007.

Clonezilla running in Virtual PC 2007 is giving me these error messages:

"Error! No unmounted partition(s) are found! To use Clonezilla to save or clone a partition, the source partition must be unmounted! Press "Enter" to exit...

"No disk image is found in /home/partimag.. Make sure you already saved an image! Or make sure you did not try to restore an image saved from partition(s) to disk(s)! Program terminated!!!"

Any thoughts???

Thanks.

Hello,

I've been messing around with this for too long, and can't find any help from Symantec. I do think I've done something silly or just plain dumb to cause my problem.

I've been using Ghost for awhile now, and never had any problems. We got in a slew of new Gateways and I can't create images of them. I install the client manually on my model computer, and then hop on the ghost server to make my image. In the Ghost Console I make a create image task, point to the desired computer, make a new image file for it, check my sysprep settings, and get ready to rock.
Then, I get this error: "There are machines in the task that may use the Virtual Partition but do not have a valid template." Then something about "it may fail", and it sure does. Now... I think I'm missing something simple here. I want to use the Virtual Partition, because I'm running everything off the console, but I know not what template it refers to.
The new computers don't have floppy drives, so I'm turning to a BartPE disk if I can't get this to work over the network. But, I'd /really/ like it to.

Thanks -mmX

Hi,

Here's my problem:
My UH572 can't detect the 32gb iSSD i100 by Sandisk through BIOS, thus, can't use iSSD as primary boot device or for fresh OS install. No options to tick or enable/disable through BIOS.
Searched google but to no avail.

Through Windows Installation Menu
Drive 0: 500gb hitachi HDD
Drive 1: 32gb iSSD

Through BIOS:
Drive 0: 500gb hitachi HDD

---
Weird thing though, iSSD can normally boot if there is a bootable USB (with Windows OS on it) plugged in.
I've tried with easy2usb's "boot to first HDD" option and it works. I've tried with a Win10 OS and rufus bootable usb > clicked repair windows > Continue with Windows 7/8/10 and it works as well.

Temp Fix I did was:
plugged in SD card with easy2usb boot on it.
always had to manually navigate to the "boot to first HDD" option to be able to boot using iSSD. (even if it is not the first HDD. It might mean first bootable HDD )

Request/Help:
Can someone help me create a DOS command that I can use for my bootable SD card. A command that can run automatically without me pressing anything. Not sure if it's possible but I want to use the SD card as a bootable USB device then put the DOS command that will run automatically during start up and boot to the First bootable HDD, just like the option on the easy2usb menu.

Appreciate your inputs!

Hi there,
For the last few weeks my internet has been running slow when I use both Firefox and Internet explorer (I tried the later to see if it was just a FF problem). The problem is that my first page takes about 20 seconds to load and then my next few pages will go at normal speed. After a while i will have another 20 second wait for a load and also if i go away for a while but leave Firefox open, then the next thing i load takes a very long tiime. Normally i wouldn't mind too much but sometimes the loadings time out and don't load at all or i might get a few long loads in a row. Aol Instant Messager is also having teh exact same problem (Long time to start up and first message/ first message after going away takes a long time to send). I run ad-aware and spybot search and destroy (newest versions to the best of my knowledge). Here's the image I took of my laptop with a white background from my phone:
http://imgur.com/m9ouc9Q

I have small amounts of screen bleeding around the bottom left corner, and very faintly around the bottom right.

I take care of my products and keep my laptop in a case, so it doesn't get exposed to water and other environmental factors. However, I'm disappointed in the screen bleeding issue that seemed to develop out of no where.

My laptop is currently under warranty until August. The model is a Z51-70 and I just got it in July. Am I eligible to get the screen replaced?

Mod's Edit: System model added to front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

It seems you'd need to call and have it approved for replacement. 100000 yes's here don't count for diddily squat

Hey guys,

Take a look at this diagram, it is as accurate as I could make it:

Description:
We have three cameras connected to their respective DVR's, they are accessible from their own building but not from another building, not even if you use an external IP (e.g. 214.201.154.102:1660) not even if you use a local IP (e.g. 192.168.150.1:1660)

We already opened ports for the DVR's, like I said they are available from the web to anyone except us, I can even go home and access any camera from home. But inside building G I can only view G, inside M I can only view M, etc.

R and M are in different buildings but are using the same router, sharing the same internet but I still can't access R from M or M from R.

I hope someone can help me on this, I already tried everything I know I have no idea what is going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

Copy of the diagram in case the other one goes down:

Hey All,

New to the forums!

I have used SRS HD Audio/Audio Essentials (or whatever they call it now a days) for much better sound through my system/speakers with good results in the past. However, I was wondering if there is something else out their for DL that may be better? I am somewhat of an audiophile and like high quality sound to listen to my tunes with.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!!

Thanks,
Mr. Cornhusker

Answer:Can anyone recommend a good virtual sound card? (preferably free)

I've never heard of such a thing. I understand the value of having a high quality physical sound card, but never anything virtualized through software. I'll have to head over to Google and do some reading.

I regularly come across advertisements for a (cheap, appr £30, mail-order)USB memory stick/pen with the capacity of umpteen floppies. It seems too good to be true, so I tried to find one in the local computershops but they only have the more elaborate ones for music, video etc. A lot more expensive of course. My husband only needs extra storage for a series of floppies containing the family tree, so the simple cheap one would be ideal. The fact they are not available in High St shops, puts me off a bit. Does this mean they are no good, too good to be true, have been replaced by better ones, or are so new they haven't reached the shops yet? Please help.

Answer:USB Memory pen/stick, portable memory, any good?

I brought a 128Mb USB memory pen from Dabs for about £35, and it's excellent for saving my files at home/work and then transporting them around. You won't regret getting one.Shop around though as there are large variations in the prices being asked.

Hi there,

I'm looking to wipe my PC, but ideally instead of formatting then re-installing everything one by one, i was wondering if i could just create a virtual machine, install all my applications and move essential files across then just build some sort of image from that that can be installed on a fresh, formatted hard drive?

Just so i can can continue working on my machine in the mean time while everything installs, to minimize disruption.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Want to format. Build an image with installed apps on virtual machine?

Another idea is to install the OS and programs, set it up as you like and then capture the image. This keeps it smaller with only OS and programs and works especially well with a separate data partition for the User folders or linked via Libraries. The image isn't weighed down by out of data files but instead if it needs recovery in 20 minutes C is refreshed while your data is current and safe in its separate partition "vault." Of course you need to back up your files too.

Ex a 320gb desktop works faster than a 1TB destop with the same specs. Is it true? Can i have a good customized build for a laptop with 2x core and >2gb Ram and 512 graphics (i heard kingstion sux)... money aint a factor....

Answer:Requesting a good 2x core build for desktop and laptop.. Few questions included.

First in terms of durability and performance, Intel is better. And a lesser disk space would mean only you will be able to store less. But having 1 TB would mean that defragmentation will take a lot longer. but performance should not be noticebly different. Customized builds, especially for laptops will be very expensive. But if you want performance, i would suggest Alienware, especially when money is not a factor. or a Dell XPS 1530 or 1730, if you are gaming.
