Change power settings based on a schedule?

Question: Change power settings based on a schedule?

Say you want the computer automatically to go into Power Saver mode at night, High Performance during 9-5pm hours, and then Balanced at other times. Is there a way to do this?

It might be doable using task scheduler and the powercfg command, but the main issue with that is if you computer is sleeping, it probably won't execute the command to take it out of sleep.

Send me your ideas and comments.

Preferred Solution: Change power settings based on a schedule?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Change power settings based on a schedule?

if your computer is sleeping, then I dont think it matters which power mode it is in. Otherwise, this is a good Idea and I am interested as well if anyone finds a setup.

Hi is there anyway to automatically switch power setting based on my location. Say if I'm connected to my home network be in high performance mode. Or perhaps a program that does this? If not does anyone know how I might go about creating one ( I'm a computer science student) thanks, Laurie

Answer:change power settings based on location

No, i do not think that there is a way to do that.

I overclock my CPU by changing its FSB and I have scheduled (Task Scheduler) this script to run every time I logon to Windows. But I would like to schedule it to downclock when I pull the power cord and then overclock as I plug it back in. Is this possible? It would also be nice if Windows changed the power plan when switching between AC/battery.

Answer:How can I change power plan and run scripts based on power state?

Hello Apex,

I'm not sure it's possible to have Windows change power plans automatically like that.

However, if you like, you could use either tutorial below to help make it easier to manually switch between power plans whenever you like.Power Plan - Choose from Desktop Context Menu in Windows

Hope this helps some,

I'm curious if it is possible to change Windows settings based on my laptop's location. What I would like is a few settings (GPOs) to change based on whether I am at home vs anywhere else.

I'm guessing that detecting the wireless/wired network I'm connected to, or looking for a server or specific piece of hardware (laptop dock) are the best ways to reliably determine the laptop's location. I'd prefer not to set up a Windows domain at home, however I'd imagine it would make it easier to accomplish what I'm trying to do.

I would prefer a native solution, however third party programs, scripting or programming is acceptable. I'm using Win 10 Pro x64.

Hi everyone, thanks for looking.
Im running into a particular problem that I cant seem to find the reasons or the settings.

I watch HBO GO (i have a valid subscription) on my Windows 7 Home laptop and use an HDMI cable to connect my TV.

Scenerio 1:
If I leave the close the lid power option on hibernate, I must leave the laptop open and, when I connect the HDMI the TV, it becomes my monitor and I view as the monitor and watch anything full screen no problem.

Scenerio 2:
I change the power option on the lid close to "do nothing". When the HDMI cable is hooked up, if the laptop is open it uses the laptop display, if its closed it displays through the HDMI/TV. This is perfect and exactly what I want.
I can watch as the monitor no problem HOWEVER, if I choose full screen, I get gray borders and the "Full Screen" is not full and just centered.

I can not for the life of me figure out why and Im going crazy.
Does anyone know why the power option would have an effect on this and what settings I could change?

Many Thanks in Advance!!!

Max

Answer:External display settings change when Power options change?

Check to see what resolution your laptop's display is at, what the external TV resolution is when you connect it to your laptop, and MAYBE what resolution the videos you're watching are. This just sounds like a resolution issue. If the TV is at a larger resolution than your laptop's resolution, change the TV's resolution to the size your laptop is at. Then try watching a video to see what happens. Hope this helps.

When I went to review the advanced power settings nothing happens when I click on the link for change advanced power settings. You can see the screen flash very quickly but the power options dialogue does not appear. Any idea what applet runs this dialogue so I might try running it manually? Hi. I had previously set my system to "Do nothing" when I physically press the power button, to avoid accidental manual shutdown. Well I was doing something and accidentaly pressed the button. The computer shutdown. I checked again under power settings, and the "Do nothing" option was indeed selected.

Any ideas?

Answer:Power settings don't really change anything?

I think the Power settings option applies only to the Start menu power button, not to the keyboard/ Tower physical button. Try remapping the power key to something non-functional with Sharpkeys.

I have a power setting for battery and for plugged in power. I dont want standby when I'm plugged in. Whenever the battery is unplugged, the settings go automatically to the battery settings, but when I plug the power back in the settings don't change back to my plugged in power settings (the settings that have no standby). Also, whenever I come out of standby my resolution is off. The clock reads of the screen and the only way to fix it is to turn res down and back up again.

Greetings,

I am attempting to temporarily disable hibernate and make sure the monitor doesn't go off while I am running a script to complete system configuration.

Code:
control powercfg.cpl -monitor-timeout-ac 30
control powercfg.cpl -monitor-timeout-dc 30
control powercfg.cpl /hibernate off
I believe the code above should work, but what's happening is the control panel applet for power settings is launching when this script runs.

Can someone help me make this so that:
The control panel applet doesn't launch
The settings are only made for the current logged on user

I also would appreciate knowing how to revert the setting changes I made at the end of my script

Thanks!

Answer:Script to change power settings

Well you are calling on the .cpl so it is going to open.
Have you tried using the old powercfg.exe method instead?
I don't believe it opens a window on execution
Just go into command window and type powercfg.exe /?
for the list of switches for it.

Welcome to the Forums.

Can you try the following:
1. Press the Windows logo key? +R and type netplwiz or control userpasswords2
2. On the User Accounts Window, ensure "User must enter a username and password to use this computer" is checked, hit apply then ok, reboot and observe the PC.

3. As for the unit going to hibernation mode when put to sleep, have you tried disabling hybrid sleep / hibernation mode under the power optons?

Alternatively, if the system was working fine before, you can also perform a System Restore to rule out any possible corrupted Windows Update that might have caused the issue.

"*some settings are hidden or managed by your organisation" means ... that there's a non-standard registry setting. Whether this was set through group policy, a third party app or by the user themselves in Regedit can be difficult to track down.

Assuming I am using the correct terminology in my question but knowing that I am possibly talking about something else I will explain. Having done a fresh install of Win7 HomePrem I noticed that when I click on a drive I have to wake it up--it doesn't open immediately and I could here it begin to hum. Prior to my reinstalletion I did not have to do this--clicking on any drive would pop up a window immediately. Then I recalled that I had done this manually and I think it was through the 'Power Options' --> Advanced Settings --> Hard Disk --> Turn off hard disks after... Am I correct in this? That this is how I prevent my disk from going to sleep/turning off? by setting it at 0 or 999 minutes. Assuming not then how do I do so. Assuming yes, then is there a way to do so only for one HD? I have 4 (where my OS sits and 3 others). I do not like to wait every time I want to open a folder in a drive I am not presently using and since this drive mainly happens to be the D: drive and not my E: or F: drive (hardly used) I was hoping I could be specific.

I need help to change the schedule I have already created for a System Image Backup. How do I get into schedule settings to change it?

Answer:How do I change the schedule for aSystem Image Backup

Unfortunately you can't (easily). You make a system image from the "File History" screen you have to do it manually.

You could schedule something like this with task manager

Code:
wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:E: -include:C: -allCritical -quiet

But probably you'd be better off using Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download or similar really.

Hi everyone,

Scenario 1 (currently working): I wrote the below macro in order to change D4 and D5 to blank when the D3 selection (drop down selection) is changed. Since these cell are linked, when the D3 dropdown changes the users will be forced to make a new selection from D4 and D5.

Scenario 2 (what I would like to accomplish): Now I would like to make D5 become blank when the selection for D4 changes, but I am not able to make it do that.

Here is the code that is working right now for scenario 1:

Private Sub worksheet_change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Target.Address <> "$D$3" Then Exit Sub
Range("D4").ClearContents
Range("D5").ClearContents
Range("D14").ClearContents
Range("D15").ClearContents
End Sub

As you know most cpu's can clock themselves down when there idle or dont have much load. i have this feature disabled because i use my computer for gaming. However, its on 24-7 and while im sleep i would like for it to clock down.

If i set it to "always on" in power options my CPU will not clock down which is normal.

If i set it to minimal power than it will clock down and up by itself.

Now how i do i put this on a schedule? I would like @ for example 9am-1am to be set for "ALWAYS ON.

However, after 2am i would like the computer to automatically set itself to minimal power management so the cpu is able to clock down while im sleep.

Thanks.

Answer:How to schedule windows power management?

You can probably do this using task scheduler to run a batch file, using power profile registry entries exported to .reg files.

Each batch file would contain something like:

regedit /s whichpowerprofile.reg
Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

The registry entries for the "current" power profile is in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg. The value is in CurrentPowerPolicy, a number from 0 to 5. This is the value you would export for each of your power profiles that you want to switch.

I don't have an XP system handy to test this right now, but it should work.

edit: Personally, I would just leave power management enabled all the time. It makes very little difference in performance while it's enabled and power management saves power and lets the computer run cooler.

I posted in this forum as I feel this is security related. Mods move if need be.

I'm looking for a web based (preferably PHP) change log program. It should do the following:

1. Be simple!
2. Allow people to enter descriptions of basic system changes
3. Changes should have categories by systems and can be filtered as such.
4. Time stamp the actions and have a "master display" where all changes can be viewed
5. LDAP authentication would be nice.

Does such a thing exist? My goggling has failed due to "change log" being such a popular term.

There is a software which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings. But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back, I suddenly found that I can not change
the proxy settings manually!
The detail is that I change the auto proxy url, to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change. However, when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back, it never success, and even the same when i'm sure I have
cleared this url in the whole registry, but it back, as it never changes!
I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back, just like it originally should be. But it never works.
So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS 10 AGAIN!
Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know! Or you should let these stuffs out of the ** registry!

Hi guys, I've had this problem for around 4-5 monthes but have never really gotten around to looking for a solution. Anyways, here is part 1 of my dilema. Lenovo Settings will not open. In fact, it seems to have disappeared completely, along with several "default" apps, such as Paint and Calculator. However, I am able to see them, yet cannot open them directly. View From the Home Button. Oddly enough, I can still open paint, though I have to do so via right clicking on a picture. Clearly they exist, but whenever I click on them and attempt to open them directly, nothing happens. Another issue I have is that the lock screen is stuck on one picture. I cannot change this picture, instead, when I try to change it, the loading wheel spins indefinately like so. If there is any solution to either of these issues please contact me as soon as you can. As you can imagine it's a little bit annoying having battery saver mode stuck on so I can't charge more than 60% for road trips. EDIT: I should also note that this is a Y50-70 I am using

Basically I am trying to conditional format in Excel a cell -say A40 with text in it which should say "Net Profit" if the value in Cell D40 is greater than zero and the text in A40 should automatically change to "Net (Loss)" if the value in D40 changes to less than zero. Answer:How to change text in a cell based on value i

First, some terminology...Conditional formatting is used to change the format of a cell when the specified condition(s) is(are) TRUE. Thus the name Conditional formatting. You are asking for the contents (not the format) of the cell to change based on the value in another cell. That is done with a basic IF function, which you can find in the Excel Help files. However, you left out a condition. You didn't tell us what you want to display if D40 equals 0 - assuming that that is possible. What should be displayed in A40 if D40 = 0?Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

I just installed Win 10 upgrade from Windows 7 on my computer and I am having some problems to modify system settings regarding pen and touch, specially "Flicks" settings, that I need to disable to have a better performance using a Wacom tablet.

When I go to Pen and Touch>Flicks Windows says I can?t change settings since those are managed by the OS admin, but my profile has admin rights....

So, I decided to enable the Administrator account, to see if using it would fix the issue, but the Administrator account still shows the same problem, with the OS giving the same message.

I even went to settings to restore the PC to default to see if it was not some installation error, but the problem still persists, since even after restoring Windows with no apps installed the OS still gives me the same message.

I saw some people having issues related with that message when trying to change Windows Update settings, and they were able to use a workaround with group policy settings so they could do whatever they need with group policy editor, but I didn't find anything related to the Flick settings there, and even so, I prefer a solution that fix / allows me to make changes on settings, specially those related to pen and touch stuff, that are my really new trouble using Windows 10.

So anyone has any idea how to fix this or at least a way that I can disable everything in Flicks with gpedit ?

Tks

Hi I have been seeing settings change on their own and cannot nail down the cause. The thing I noticed that is ongoing lately is that Internet Options gain custom settings for Trusted Sites and Local Intranet (I am not on a domain, do not connect to work or school, do not manage my computer remotely, do not send print orders from a phone, etc.)The system seems to run too many resources at times. And I get error messages that don't seem to match the environment (looks to me like an error from trying to connect to work etc)Here are my logs. In the next post I will add 2 extra and explain why. https://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/process.pl?o=1572815 says it can't understand my new update but there could be something wrong. "Detected potential protocol hijack" in a couple places and this would not surprise me. It also wouldn't surprise me if there were something with the way OneDrive is configured on my machine. It also says it's safe to remove lms.exe ; I always thought there was part of the Intel ME that I could take off and it would be ok, and if this is true I'll be happy to see it go. I'm not opposed to reinstalling Windows, but they don't give you reinstallation media any more with purchase, and I am not sure I can concentrate through the process without a lot of help.

Answer:Internet Options settings change on own--to custom settings

I guess I don't necessarily have to include more logs, just I thought some of the extensions shown in the logs (which don't actually show to me in the browser) seemed to not match up. And because there seems to be something wrong with my imageres.dll files. If it's just that the Windows 7 sector (no I don't know what that is doing; it was already Windows 10 when I bought it) doesn't work it's not an issue, but I've in the past had Restore and Factory Reset stop working, and if this is happening again I need to work out how to fix it. (and prevent it).

Hi, I want to assign a custom icon to every file type no matter what the associated app is. I can change individual default icons, but they get overwritten by the application icon. Is it possible to do this :

And if so, how ? (I want to keep the file associations: .css and .txt are still getting open by Sublime, .ini by WordPad and so on ...)

Thanks.

What is the best way to change cell colors based on a cell color (Not a number)?

I have a condition where a cell may have green background (conditional formatting), and on the next update, a different cell may have the green background (same condition, but not the same cell). I would like several cells in that column to change to the same color when this happens, they will be different rows, but will be on the same row as the change occurs ... it is dynamic.
*********
Condition 1:

G8 background color is = green

Change adjoining cells to the right and down to the same color
(H8:K8 and G9:K12) The inclusive range would be (G8:K12)
********
Condition 2 on update:

G8 is back to normal but H8 is now green

Cells in column G are back to normal but adjoing cells to the right and down should now be green.
(I8:K8 and H9:K12) The inclusive range would be H8:K12)
*******
Here is an example of the conditions above.

Condition 1
Row G H I J K
8 20 22 33 32 35
9
10 24% 15% 22% 21% 25%
11 80 82 90 88 89
12 44% 45% 48% 47% 50%

Condition 2
Row
8 22 33 32 35 38
9
10 15% 22% 21% 25% 27%
11 82 90 88 89 90
12 45% 48% 47% 50% 52%

The cells I want to highlight will not be of the same value and there are formulae in every cell.

Thanks
I haven't got the hang of copying the cells from Excel to the post. sorry about the formatting.

Answer:Change Range Cell Color Based on Another

In (nearly) simplest terms, and assuming from what you say that there'll NEVER be a time when G8 AND H8 are BOTH green, then

If Range("G8").Interior.ColorIndex = 10 Then
Range("G8:K12").Interior.ColorIndex = 10
ElseIf Range("H8").Interior.ColorIndex = 10 Then
Range("H8:K12").Interior.ColorIndex = 10
End If

You'll have to get back to us on what sheet event might fire this. & let us know if the actual cond formatting (a) blocks the code and/or (b) remains intact.

Andy

Hello
I am running win 7 and and I've noticed that the folder columns change based on the content of the folders. For example, when I'm looking at a folder with documents in it, I have the following columns:
Name
Date Modified
Type
Size

When I go into a folder with mp3s:
Name
Track number
Title
Contributing artists
Album

For pictures:
Name
size
type
date
date modified

I'd like to have all folders have the same columns no matter what files are in it. I've tried using Tools->folder options->view-> apply to folders button, but it does not fix the issue. Any way to change it for all folders?
Thanks

I need help please. I need to create a basic calender which shows the month on the top and when you click an arrow the month will change and a set of cells underneath will change. I intend to write into the cells details and when i click on the arrow to change the month the data will disappear. when I click on the arrow to go back a month, I will need this data to reappear. I would appreciate any help. I have created the arrows that change the month.

Answer:Need to change a set of cells based on the date (on excel)

Why not just create a new tab for each month and switch to the tab for the month you are interested in?Visually you would accomplish the same goal and you could go directly to any month you wanted. How have you created arrows to change months?Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

Hello,

I have written a bit of code and I am on the very last portion. I am attempting to re-create a manual process whereby the values on the 'Total' rows have to be A negative number for reconciliation. I am not sure what the best method is to accomplish this task.
Code:
Sub changetonegative()
Dim neg As Integer
neg = -1

lasttotal = Cells.Rows(Count, "a").End(xlUp).Row

For i = 1 To lasttotal

'Want to Multiply value in colum (b) of Total row to a negative number

If InStr(1, Range("c" & i), "Total") > 0 Then Range("b" & i).Formula =
End Sub

Hi I have two workbooks. The first one has a range of cells with months formatted as 'mmm'. On the second work book I reference the first workbook e.g =A1 and the month appears in the second workbook Call A1 as 40633 until I re-format that cell as a month. The tab name refelcts the same name (40633) but will not make any changes once I haver reformatted cell A1. I ahve tried formatting the cell forst before linking the two celss but it does not help at all.Is there any advice you can offer me?I am using the following code.Option ExplicitPrivate Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)On Error Resume NextMe.Name = Me.Range("a1").ValueIf Err.Number <> 0 ThenMsgBox "cannot rename sheet to this name"Err.ClearEnd IfOn Error GoTo 0End SubMany thanks

The formatting of a cell is not considered a "change" by VBA.Try something like:Me.Name = Month(Range("A1")) & "-" & Day(Range("A1")) & "-" & Year(Range("A1"))Edit:(Not tested)Tested briefly, seems to work.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

Change PowerPoint shape based on data in Excel. I need to change the color of a specific unique shape on a specific slide in PowerPoint presentation using data obtained from Excel.

issues are:
1. how to select the slide I want
2. how to select the unique shape object I want
3. how to use the data in Excel to change the color of that one particular shape object, not all the shapes of that type.

example is I use the numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) stored in Excel and when the number changes the color of the associated oval in PowerPoint is changed.

Answer:Change PowerPoint shape based on data in Excel

If you have a powerpoint presentation I imagine the shape you mention is an imbedded shape and linked to Excel, well, then you don't need to know which slide and the unique object, you let Execl do that and the imbedded shape will change when Excel is changed and refreshed.

Hello, my laptop is 5years old now, but is a very high performance one (Alienware m15x).

I've upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, however I hate the layout for much of it.

I only use the 1511.086 build.
I tried the 1607 build but the layout is just disgusting and unusable for me,
so I've had to disable the updater service to stop it forcing an upgrade to newer builds.

I'm happy with the 1511 build,
however I use ie11 only not edge browser, deleted all those live-tile bars on start menu, use an old synaptics touchpad driver, deleted cortana.

I only use my laptop for watching videos online, writing emails, creating presentations, twitter... Ect
So my main requirement is for highest video graphics quality, internet speed and performance speed, and compatibility with all websites even that have live-streaming flash... etc

I upgraded to Windows 10 cos I thought it'd be faster at processing, would have higher quality graphics, and would run all websites faster.
Plus I worried that in 2-3years Windows 7 would become very slow.

However what will be better for my requirements, going back to Windows 7 or staying on Windows 10 build 1511??

Answer:Should I change back to Windows 7 based on my requirements/dislikes??

Answer is neither. 1511 is no longer supported and is a security risk. Windows 7 will stop support in time.

The layout is much more optional with latest versions.

Dear all,
I am in a trouble with Advanced Power Setting on Windows 10.
There are limited options only when I go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings in particular Intel (R) Dynamic Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings.
For some of the missing options I followed this page and fixed: www.eightforums.com/.../50890-options-missing-power-options-advanced-settings.html
However I could not add Intel (R) Dynamic Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings in advanced power settings even though followed these links:

Excel Macro Change Font ColorI was looking for some help in a workbook. This workbook consists of multiple sheets. Each sheet contains data that I entered, formulas that add items on an individual sheet, links to other sheets and links to other workbooks. I would like to write a macro that will change the color of the font in the entire workbook that depends on the formula or lack thereof in a cell. The font color is based on four scenarios:1) If the cell contains text (such as the word "Average") or a hard-coded number (such as "150,000"), the font of the cell should be in blue.2) If the cell contains a formula that calculates based on items on cells located in on the sheet where the formula is located, the font color should be black. For example on Sheet1, the font of the cell containing the formula =SUM(E4:E12) should be black.3) If the cell contains a formula that calculates based on (a) cells located on the other sheets or (b) located on the other sheet plus the sheet where the formula is located, the font color should be green. For example on Sheet1, the font of the cell containing the formula =Sheet2!A1 or =Sheet2!A1+Sheet1!A1 should be green.4) If the cell contains a formula that calculates based on items on cells located in an entirely different workbook, the font color should be red. Any help that you could offer is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Need a macro to change font color based on cell formula

I am assuming that the default font color in your workbook is Black, so this code doesn't bother checking for formulas that reference the sheet that the formula is on. If the font is already black, why write code to set it to black?Obviously you'll have to test the code in your workbook to see if it does what you want since here is no way for me to replicate your formulas, text or numbers. It seemed to do what you asked for when I set up a test workbook.I suggest that you try it in a backup copy of your workbook since macros can not be easily undone.Sub ColorMyFonts()
'Loop through Sheets
For shtNum = 1 To Sheets.Count
'Loop through cells
For Each cell In UsedRange
'If Text or Number, Font is Blue
If WorksheetFunction.IsText(cell) Or WorksheetFunction.IsNumber(cell) Then
cell.Font.ColorIndex = 5
End If
'If Formula, check for "[" to see if a workbook is referenced
'If no "[", check for "Sheet" to see if Sheet is refernced
If cell.HasFormula Then
myForm = cell.Formula
If InStr(1, myForm, "[") > 0 Then
cell.Font.ColorIndex = 3
ElseIf InStr(1, myForm, "Sheet") > 0 Then
cell.Font.ColorIndex = 50
End If
End If
Next
Next
End Sub

Hi all,

Complete newbie here, have been reading various posts and trying to figure things out on my own but to no avail. Maybe someone can shed some light on my problem.

I'm using Excel 2004 (Mac) and want to create a VBA/macro that would change the background colour of specific cells (say A4, A5, A6 and C8) based on the number OR letter in the cell. There is a drop-down from which the user must select either 0,1,2,3,4,5 or H for these cells. I want the colour to change based on the user's selection as follows:

0 or 1 = Red (i.e. colour value 3)
2 or 3 = Yellow (i.e. colour value 6)
4 or 5 = Green (i.e. colour value 4)
H = Lavender (i.e. colour value 7)

I've found sample event code showing how to change the cell colour based on a numerical value/range, as well as different sample code showing how to change the colour based on the letter/text, but not *both in one*. (I've found out how to to insert the code via View Code when clicking the worksheet tab but am unfortunately not savvy enough to know how to set up the code correctly).

I can't imagine it would be too complex for someone with a decent level of VBA/macro knowledge. BTW, I would be using conditional formatting to do this except it only allows for 3 conditions/colours, whereas I need 4! (thanks MicroSoft...)

Any suggestions on how to do this would be very much appreciated!

Answer:How to change cell colour in Excel based on number *or* letter?!?

Technically, you can still use conditional formatting in this case - you have 4 cases and 3 max options. So just make the default background Lavender, then then use the 3 conditional cases to change it to Red/Yellow/Green. As it's a dropdown, this shouldn't break anything and selecting H will leave the default lavender colour. Not ideal, but perhaps a simple macro-free option.

If you want to use VBA then you can use code like this:

http://www.ozgrid.com/VBA/excel-conditional-formatting-limit.htm

This page explains how the Case statement works for number and letter selections (near the bottom):

http://www.ozgrid.com/VBA/select-case.htm

Hope that helps

I want it to integrate with the default weather desktop gadget so that the current weather and/or time is reflected in my desktop. If possible I would like it to have a GUI so you can easily change what backgrounds/themes associate with each feature. I wouldn't mind doing the coding on this myself but I'll go ahead and say that I'm 15 and no almost nothing about building something like this from scratch.

1- Is it possible
2- How hard would it be to do this with all the features I mentioned
3- Is there any way I could do most of it (or any of it) through Visual Studio 2010 Express?
4- Better yet, could I make the app into a desktop gadget itself?

Plz, plz help, I just came up with the idea for this today and while it would be awesome to actually pull off I have no idea what exactly I need to do.

Answer:Change desktop backgrounds automatically based on time and weather?

I've never had the inclination to try it out myself, but have you tried Rainmeter? I see many sample desktops showing the date and weather conditions, among the numerous other options.

OK, I'm troubleshooting the WEIRDEST problem I've had with software/hardware in 15 years.

Basically, when using two separate pieces of software (google chrome & neverwinter nights 2) my machine will, under certain circumstances, simply power down, like I pulled the power plug. No BSOD, no windows shutting down, just *lights out*, blink, and the machine is powered down. Upon reboot, no "windows shut down blah blah blah" dialogue/safe mode menu.

Specs:
Athlon 64 x2 6000 dual core with aftermarket cooler & very good temps
2 gigs ram (memtested ok)
Nvidia 8500 GT (unsure brand, no fan, heatsink only)
ECS Geforce 6100 SM mobo

Software:
Windows XP Home sp3, fully updated
Latest Nvidia graphics drivers, also tried with older drivers
NWN2 v1.23 (off of CDs) w/ MOTB (Digital River download)

So, I've tried everything hardware based I could think of, including swapping power supplies to a better one, swapping out the vid card, memtesting the ram sticks (haven't tried running on one stick yet), and to no avail. Identical crashes with the new components.

Software wise, I've gone so far as to re-load windows, re-install the software piece by piece, and even remove the securom DRM from the downloaded NWN expansion. Sure enough, chrome and NWN will die about 70% of the time when I "trigger" the shutdowns by playing the game for anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes, or accessing my local newspaper website and opening more than 1... Answer:Software based crash/power off?

My first suggestion (even though you stated you've done it):

Test your RAM, for at least three full cycles, with memtest86+. Anytime I've ever encountered those "insta-shutdowns" where it literally it like someone pulled the power plug from the wall or just flipped the switch on the power strip, it turned out to be RAM, 100% of the time, in each and every case it happened.

That's about all I can offer because, as I just said, each and every time without fail it turned out to be bad RAM. Other people may have had similar problems with different causes and solutions, but in my experience, such "insta-shutdowns" are caused by bad RAM, always.

Good luck...

I tryied adding a 256MB in the second slot to speed up my computer but when i turn on the computer it says that my ram exceeds the limit and wont boot up. I was just wondering if there is a way to change the limit of ram and if so how do i do it?

(I have a 30gb HD and a 1.4gh Processor with only 512mb of ram)

Answer:My computer wont let me add ram. How do i or can i change settings to change that?

You can go to Crucial and let them scan your computer and they will tell you how much
memory your computer should have.

Hi, I just received my new Thinkpad Edge 14. Whenever I plug in the laptop to the power cord or plug it out, my screen goes blank for a second, and then comes back up. Very weird.  I've tried making the brightness level the same in both settings (power and battery) and I turned off the graphic display management option for "battery" in graphics properties. I would like to see if this can be rectified soon (within my returnable period), or is this is a harbinger of display problems down the road (so, I should return it?) thanks!

First off, sorry if this is the wrong board. I wasn't sure if it belonged here or in legacy notebooks since it's an older model. Anyways I've been having an issue with my Aspire V5-171-6471 where if I asjust the screen after powering it on, one of two catastrophic things takes place. If I adjust the screen just a little (<5 degrees roughly) the screen starts to malfunction such that the image freezes and becomes obstructed by blocks of random colors. If I adjust the angle of the display even more, this generally results in the entire machine losing power (power light goes off, fans/hdd stop spinning, etc.). Weirder still is that following this, moving the screen back into place can sometimes be enough to power the laptop back on without striking the power button to do so. Any ideas what could be causing this?  I intend to do the fix myself but haven't been able to diagnose what specific components are lending to this problem, as all connections near the display hinges seem to be secure and I don't want to just throw money at replacement parts that might not even be faulty. The only other issues I've ever had with this laptop was that the original hard drive began to be unbootable and had to be replaced. I had thought that was an issue with the hard drive but within ~8 months the replacement (of a different brand) began having the exact same issue, so I feel like it's more likely an issue with the mobo or SATA connector slowly corrupting my drives. If it's th... Read more

I am trying to run a power point program designed in Vista but for computers on XP.

I have already saved the program in Power Point 1997-2003 format, and I have saved the sound files in Wave format. When I run this program on other XP based PC's, I get no sound but I can still get my pictures. What am I doing wrong?

Can someone please help me on this? I'm trying to create a memorial CD for my sister who just died very recently, and I want to get this to my family as a Christmas present.

Hello As much as I can see, many of my ThinkPad w530 stock Power Manager options are the same as in Windows 7 power options (power plans). But I was not able to find anywhere an answer to my quite obvious question, which of them settings have a priority in the event, that they are different? Say, if I choose "Enter system standby" value "after 30 min of idle" in ThinkPad Power Manager, but set the value of the same option to "Never" or "5 minutes" in Windows power options, which should work? Or may be the both simultaneously?  Thanks! P.S.Certainly I can check it myself which a series of simple tests, how it actually works. But my question has a bit another point, that is how these things should work. (I have some minor issues, say, laptop does not go to sleep/standby when works on AC, although previously it did it exactly as it is configured in Power Manager idle settings. So in order to detect possible cause I whish to understand, how it should work.)

Hi guys, I'm new here and this is my first post. I have an Optiplex 745 running Windows 7 Professional. Normally in the advanced setting section of the power plan option I have the option to change the power state, however all of a sudden these options have just totally disappeared. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Missing power state controls in advanced power plan settings

What Power plan are you using ?

Balanced, Power Saver or High Performance ?

Also, run a System File Check

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Use option 2

Hi,

Im new here to the forum because i have an odd issue and i can't find anything on the net so i thought i ask here.

I am on Windows 10 - 64 version 1607 build 14393.1358

The problem is that i don't have the options for processor power management anymore in power options. I don't know if this is necessary but its kinda odd.

The other thing is that i tried to install my AMD X370 chipset drivers and it worked only in device manager it keeps saying that i am using an driver from 2015 under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Any advice?

Thnx in advanced.

Answer:Windows 10 power options/ processor power management settings gone.

Hi, same build.. can you please post a screenshot similar to this to confirm what you're seeing?
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon to the left of the video icon above your post

Normally Win 10 takes care of all basic drivers- I'm wondering why you need to install any manually? This is normally only necessary if MS gets it wrong.

Hi,

My VBA/Macro knowledge is very basic, but I am able to record macros and edit them. I have a scatter plot (with 5 series) and I want to automatically change the line style (i.e. solid or dashed etc.) depending on the text in a cell. This is what I tried, but I cannot get the code to reference the cell which contains the text:

--------------------------------------------------------------

Sub Macro14()
'
' Macro14 Macro
'
'
ActiveSheet.ChartObjects("Chart 1").Activate
ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).Select
With Selection.Format.Line
.Visible = msoTrue
.DashStyle = msoLineSolid
End With
End Sub
--------------------------------------------------------------

For the line ".DashStyle = msoLineSolid" I tried ".DashStyle = Range("A7").Select" but this does not work.

Is there a simpler way to set-up a macro to format graphs automatically based on a cell content/format/colour, does anyone know a good guide to do this?

Thanks

I installed windows 10 from the insider app. It got installed with some issue, so I did a hard reset and started windows 10 on my phone from scratch. Its doing all good, I don't see the previous issue any more and its working fine but I'm not able to go to settings app. Every time I try to go to "all settings" from the notification bar it show you need to install a app for this from the store. It ask me to install from the store but when i click yes it says there is no app available in store for your search.
I try to find the settings in the app list after swiping to left as well but there is no settings there.
What can be done in this case, please advice.

hello, i have a 9800gt that gives a very low fps on crysis, i went to the shop from where i purchased it and they said that you need to change your power supply, currently its 230watt, i was thinking that i should replace my card with another one as mine does not have a six pin supplementary power connector. so my question is that should i change my psu first or should i switch my card first?

Answer:Should i change my power supply or should i change my graphics card?

your running a 9800gt on a 230W PSU!? not sure how your doing that without it shutting down as soon as you start a game. the 9800gt needs a 450W psu with 24A on the 12v rail (s). change the PSU. you are fortunate that you haven't overstressed the 230W psu and destroyed the rest of the system.

How much power does an dell inspiron 2020 all in one desktop if left on 24/7 with all the power savings settings disabled? I don't leave it on 24/7 but I am trying to get a cost of usage per hour in various modes.

I would also like to figure out how much less it would use if you put windows 7 in sleep mode or hibernation mode lets say an hour.

I am also trying to figure it how much it would save money at night if I just unplugged everything.

We are on Duke Energy Indiana, U.S.

Does a Screen Save use less or more power?

Thank you for this information in advance.

Answer:Power usage and Power savings settings questions

No clue. You`d have to compare 2 elecrical bills, but someone will come along with a technique.

You should never leave a pc on 24/7 if you`re not using it, that`s just crazy IMO.

You should have the monitor going off after 10 to 15 and sleep or hiber after 45 to an hour.

Of course a screensaver uses more power and just heats up the video card, no need to even run one.

Earlier this afternoon I switched my power settings to power saver as my laptop was dieing.

I shut it down like this.

I hooked it back up to power and switched back to high performance power setting.

However, while playing games the performance is horrible. I even switched back to power saver while playing and it made no difference.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I manage a fleet of 200 linx 8 tablets all running win 10 home.

I need to issue a 'fix' that HIBERNATES the tablet rather than entering sleep when pressing the power button

I will need to do this programatically - bundled within an .exe that I'm building - so the solution would ideally be an import of a new reg key....

BUT what do I need to change and where?

I think whatever I do, I may also need to enable hibernation, and disable connected standby. Also, as it may sometimes be mains and sometimes battery powered, cover both power scenarios.

Apologies if I am repeating a previously asked question.

many thanks

Hi everybody, I just got the X200 laptop, like it very much except for the annoyingly loud beep when the system goes into stand-by. Looking trough this forum I tried many things, like changing the sound settings in regedit to 'no' and disabling the 'beep' plugin in the system settings. No luck so far. An other solution (that sounds useful) is disabling the 'beep on power changes' option in the Power Manager. But...when I open the Power Manager, it displays the welcome/info screen and then disappears! How can I get into the Power Manager??Hope someone can help... Cheers, Hanneke

Answer:Power manager doesn't display - so I can't get rid of the power change beep...

That's a strange one. Run Thinkvantage System Update, or just download and install most recent PM driver and software. Maybe refreshing these will give you PM back. Otherwise, I believe you may also have a setting in the BIOS for the beep. Not in front of my X100 now, but I know I have this setting on my X60s.

I am the only owner of my computer. And all the proxy options are grayed out.. I am using Windows 10 Pro. Any Fixes?

Answer:Unable to Change Proxy Settings! "Some settings are managed by your organization"

Not sure this will work, but it's worth a shot I think..
Restart you device and boot to safe mode. Then you go to the proxy settings, and turn it off. Double click LAN settings to see if its completely off. If it worked log off safe mode, boot normally and check if that did actually resolve anything..

From Windows 98SE/2000/XP SP3 I always set my power settings as always on/never shut down (hard drive always on) with the exception of turn off display after 10 mins. Both my PCs are on for about 16-20 hrs each day and I always shut them down manually every night.

Now in Windows 7, I created a custom plan that basically more or less similar to the above, always on/never shut down/never sleep, turn off hard drive after 10000 mins (basically never off) except to turn off display after 10 mins.........well, last night I thought of trying out the "Balanced" (recommended) plan....and after 30 mins of inactivity, both my PC were off/shut down and I had to press the power/on buttons on both my PCs to bring them back (cause clicking the mouse/pressing any key on the KB wouldn't bring them back), is this normal or the way the Balanced plan supposed to work?

What's your or how you set your Power Options/Power plan settings on your Windows 7?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Power Options/Power plan settings?

Balanced does turn your hdd and things off after 30 minutes(put it to sleep). Just go in there and change all the sleep things to never, or set them to 0 minutes. After you select your new plan, make sure your screensaver is on as well.

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro. My Power Options/Power Schemes settings are as follows:

Turn off monitor = Never
Turn Off Hard Drive = Never
Standby Mode = Never

I seem to get better peformance with these settings, but I would like to know if these settings will adversely affect my hard drive and monitor.

Thank you.

Answer:Power Options/Power Schemes Settings

My two rigs run 24/7 so your last two don't apply to me but I always turned off my monitor physically if I was going to be away for more than 20 minutes. I especially did this with a CRT screen as the 'screensavers' were just phosphor savers as the electron gun kept on working.

With my LCD screen I've now relaxed that to a 20 minute off cycle and10 minute screensaver mode as that saves the light and the pixels, if the pixels need saving from burnout. HTH.

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"

I've deleted my user account and created a new one, but the problem remains. I've unlocked the Administrator account, but even through that account the settings can't be changed. I'm not in a homegroup, as I've heard this could solve the problem and I've disconnected and reconnected my Microsoft account to my User Account to no avail.

Please help, Windows keeps updating and I don't have the bandwidth to continue this way.

I think there are threads on this subject. Haven't been able to find any one that solves my problem.

Answer:Can't Change Update Settings "Some settings are managed.."

Hello C, and welcome to Eight Forums.

This sounds like a group policy has been set to prevent access to those settings. As you found out, this would be a global setting applied to all user accounts (new and old).

Please post a screenshot showing your Windows Update settings to help narrow down which policy it may be since there are a few for Windows Update.

Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

Answer:Specific network settings based on wifi network

You can go into IPv4 Properties of this NIC, then you can use the Alternate configuration tab to set up the alternate IP, or use the Advanced tab to add a static IP/gateway/DNS etc. to TCP/IP.

Create Icon on desktop to open a websiteYa, I?ve done that for ever and it works great. But today I was on a chat with Norton support he was on my pc remotely trying to fix a LAN Proxy problem. He uninstalled several problem malware programs and installed some other programs including Google Chrome. After he was off the system I was checking around my HP Laptop and noticed the the Desktop Icons with Apps on the PC worked but all the web based icons did not work anymore. I did the procedure like I had many times before from a web site but the Icon just will not work at all. The error I get on all of them is when I click on the icon to open itIs Application Not Found.I?ve never seen this one before but I?ll keep trying to find the solution unless one of you gentlemen have a answer for me, I do plan on uninstalling Google Chrome and testing the icons again to see if that might have something to do with it?Thanks.Rod [email protected]

I was hoping someone can help me with a Macro. I have an Excel Spreadsheet that has numerous tabs. Throughout the workbook there are cells that have the font color of orange. I have been going to each tab and checking to see if there are any cells that have orange font and changing the tab color to orange. Was wondering if there is a Macro that can loop through all the sheets and determine and check for any orange font in the all the worksheets and if there is change the tab color to match accordingly. For Example: Loop through the sheets to determine how many sheets...Check Sheet 1 for any orange font in any cells in sheet1. If there is, change tab color to orange. Check Sheet 2 for any orange font, if any, then change the tab color to orange...etc...I am using Microsoft Excel 2007.Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:Macro change tab color based on font color

First you post a question asking how to change all Tabs that are colored Orange to be No Color, then you post a question asking how to turn Tabs Orange.Make up your mind! ;-)Anyway, once again we have the issue of what color Orange do you have. Excel 2003 was much more limited in choices for colors, so this type of thing was much easier to do than it is in 2007 or higher. The first thing you need to do is determine what the ColorIndex number for your Orange font is.You can do that with these steps:1 - Paste this code into the VBA editor:
Sub WhatOrange()
MsgBox Selection.Font.Colorindex
End Sub
2 -Find a cell with an Orange font color and select it.3 - Run the code4 - Jot down the number shown in the Message Box5 - Click OKOnce you have that number, paste this code into the VBA editor:Sub ColorMyTab()
For shtNum = 1 To Sheets.Count
For Each cell In Sheets(shtNum).UsedRange
If cell.Font.ColorIndex = 44 Then
Sheets(shtNum).Tab.ColorIndex = 44
Exit For
End If
Next
Next
End SubNow replace the 44 (twice) with whatever ColorIndex number you jotted down from the previous macro.Run the 2nd piece of code. One very important note:The only way that I know to find a specific Font.ColorIndex in a spreadsheet is to check each cell in the UsedRange one by one.If you have huge spreadsheets, with thousands of cell in the UsedRange, the code could take a long time to run. The code will stop checking each shet as soon as it finds a cell with a Font.ColorIndex that matches ... Read more

Hi,I have an excel file with 2 sheets:Sheet 1 has Real numbers of a business performance for the year X in range (D17:V113) and the variation vs Sheet 2 in % in range (Y17:AQ113)This variation cells in range (Y17:AQ113) change their color based on the intensity of the variation using conditional formattingNow the cells in range (D17:V113), which are supposed to be entered by the user, should adopt the color of its counterpart in range (Y17:AQ113) and for that I saw in another post that some VBA is needed. Then, I believe the code should look something like this:Sub MatchColors() For Each myCellColor In Range("Y17:AQ113") myCellColor.Offset(0, -21).Interior.ColorIndex = _ myCellColor.Interior.ColorIndex NextEnd SubBut the thing is that I am a total newbie at VBA and donīt really know how to get that code running. Help with this last point would be greatly aprreciated! Thanks!

Answer:Change color of Cell based on another cellÂīs color

The Interior.ColorIndex does not return the Conditionally Formatted color of a cell. It only returns the ColorIndex of cell that has been Filled either manually or by setting the Interior.ColorIndex via VBA.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.
