External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

Question: External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

Hello
I got my 1tB WD external disk and it's not working as it used to. The problem came from nowhere, suddenly, totally unexpected. There is/was my precious data on it which I collected for 10+ years and I'd like not to lose it.

Origin:
It was working fine a day ago, no problems occured. Hasn't been unplugged since then. Has never fallen. Has never had any kind of error. But: I've seen some kind of ".COM not responding" problem on my PC (don't remember, closed it immediately). I believe my laptop is in a good and healthy condition.

So, what my WD HDD does is:
- it can be seen as a device by my computer. I can plug it out safely.
- diode shows that it's working (not showing the data transfer activity)
- nothing else

What I see in Device Management/Storage is (as in the title):
Screenshot by Lightshot

What programs I used to try to restore partition:
- Mini tool Partition Recovery Home Edition (quick and deep scan, no results. Shows disk as a Bad Disk)
http://prntscr.com/2wpy8s
- Mini tool Power Data Recovery (pro, non-free tool, however after scan there was no results)
- Find and Mount (no results)
- TestDisk (quick and deep scan, no results)

What I haven't tried doing is connecting the HDD directly to the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

Answer:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Right click on it and choose Create Parittion. Choose the type of partition. Then format it. I recommend doing the slow format. It may take an hour or so, but I think you're better off in the long run.

Answer:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... but I had almost exactly the same thing happen to me on a Seagate 2TB hard drive. Working for months, even passing surface checks with no errors and then, one day -- "bad disk".

I've tried every data recovery app I could find against it (4 of them) and none of them find anything.

I've had drives fail me over the years and have never run into this situation where the drive powers up but NOTHING can be recovered from it.

So, I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery outfit

It is my brother's hard drive & it has very important data related to his working. It is a 2tb WD my passport ultra external hard disk which was used as NTFS with only one partition.
My brother told me that he deleted some data from the drive by mistake and was recovering the data from the drive but all the windows recovery programs he used just hanged after few minutes (which is also a sign of bad sectors). Then he done the blundered mistake by formatting the drive, the formatting also not completed due to hang situation.

Now the current situation is that the drive is not showing in the windows explorer and when I open the disk management ,the popup came up for initializing the disk either as MBR or GPT. When I try to initialize the disk, it gives me this error:- "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error". I have attached a few screenshots below.

I have tried cloning the drive with clonezilla, tried booting the drive with parted magic, Hire n boot and system rescue CD but neither of them recognized the drive and some also rejected to boot with the drive attached.
Now currently i am scanning this disc for recovering the lost partition in the 'Partition Recovery Wizard' software according to the advice on some old thread here, but this software has detected my disk as 'bad Disk' in the file System column as you can see in the fifth image, so i don't have much hope with this software.

Please tell me if there is any hope left for drive like try... Read more

Answer:wd 2tb external drive - unknown, not initialized and unallocated

Hello nsingla and I am sorry you and your brother have this problem!

Things don't look so good now. You've done and tried a lot with aim you need, still looks like the drive's partition table and/or file system are corrupted to a stage that prevents other software to work correctly onto the drive.

I could additionally suggest trying to scan and repair the drive. Try downloading the WD ultra Drive Utilities for Windows and see if you could repair the drive:

Support Answers

If nothing works, the drive is probably too damaged and beyond repair. Hope this is not the case. But perhaps the worst part for the drive was the formatting attempt. Which, by definition, would delete everything from the HDD.

Good luck and post back with results!

I'm new to this forum.

My external hard disk (Seagate) is detected in the task bar after connecting, but not visible in "My Computer".

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Answer:Disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated, Please help

Start with this free tool. You should try to recover the partition before worrying about recovering the data. If you can recover the partition, the files should be OK if they haven't been over-written.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Select Partition Recovery Wizard. Choose the drive, then full disk, quick scan. Quick Scan may take 5 or more hours.

If the partition is eventually found, select and double click on it. You should then see all files in the Explorer.

What type of drive is it, and how is it being connected?

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing the full layout of your Disk Management window to see if that may help ID what the issue could be.

Hello,

I have used the tittle from another thread as my issue is very similar, only none of what is posted there worked for me.

So I have a WD 500gb HDD. (Actually I am not 100% sure it is a HDD and not a SDD)
I have plugged it in various PC and laptops. When doing so, you get the usual sound que. It also installs the driver according to the little pop up window.
However after that, the drive is not visible in "My Computer".

When I check the drive in Computer Management>Disk Management, it wants me to initialise the disk. Which, I know I do not want to do (thanks to one of your earlier posts) as this will over write my data.
In Disk Management the disk is "Unknown" and "Not Initialised" It also does not give any volume. Pics of both of these attached.

I have tried using Partition Wisord free. It does not even see the drive.
I have tried using Photorec. It does not see the drive.
I have used R-Studio. It does see the disk, but I am not able to scan it. Again also no disk volume. Again Picture attached.

I am hopeful for a solution, as I feel like the symptoms suggest that I do not have a head misalignment. But I might be wrong on that.

Hoping for someone with some mad skills to help me out here.

Thanks in advance!

Guys i have a similar problem but unlike the problem above my partition magic software does not read my external HD.. My external HD is WD 1TB HD.. it does not matter if i lose the data..but i want the HD to work

Answer:disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery service and am awaiting a quote.

Hi,

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

Hey guys,

I have this new Western Digital My Book that I got about 6 months ago and it suddenly will not show up when I plug it in. I tried looking for solutions on what's happening but I can't get past the first few steps, until I found one where it says that the drive is probably toasted! Anyway, I'm still not giving up hope. I tried it on two computers, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it's still the same. I tried initializing it and it's giving me "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

Answer:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?Click to expand...

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

Have a 1TB Iomega USB3 external hard drive that worked well on both a desktop and laptop Win7/64 system. Answer:Previously functional USB3 external hard drive shows not initialized

1. Please post a screenshot of Disk Management with your external HDD plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

2. It would indeed be prudent to recover the data before you try anything else on the HDD.

You may try to access the hard drive booting into a live Linux CD/pendrive.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.2 (442 KB) http://rufus.akeo.ie/

It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/256518-peppermint3-create-live-cd-dvd-usb-use-emergency-backup.html to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint3 Linux.

Lucid Puppy or Peppermint3, in either case you can use Rufus to create your bootable pendrive.

Hi. I recently (quick) formatted and allocated an external Seagate Barracuda 250GB HD on my Windows Vista system using a SATA HD dock. I copied a load of stuff to it and ejected normally. Now, a month later, I connected it via SATA-USB cable to another computer (Windows 7) and the drive shows as Unallocated. As if I'd never set it up in the first place. I tried it with different cables on a third machine (Windows XP) and a fourth machine (Windows 7) and all the same result. I'm not the most technically well versed and would appreciate any suggestions on getting around this. I'd really like to recover this data. Thanks.
Creed.

Answer:External HD now shows 'unallocated'???

Well 2 things spring to mind (well my mind in any case).

1. The external enclosure is faulty (probably not since the drive shows up as unallocated).

2. The partition tables / mbrs have become corrupted (highly likely).

See this thread below with a user who had similar type of problem and with a solution. Please read the thread carefully and initially try to use the prog which the OP (dlb) used to access the drive. Then proceed with solution which I strongly believe will work for you also.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=185922

As an alternative boot to a Linux Live cd (Puppy is good 100Mb in size and load entirely to ram) then connect your external and see if it detects.

In your shoes, I would try Puppy first and attempt to recover the data then you can just format the external. I have used the BiNG solution many times myself without any issues and have suggested it also to forum users who have never had issues either but as always there is always a risk.

Good Luck

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, and have read a million threads on different sites and tried everything, to no consequence. I need the files on the drive, and have tried all of the following:

- booting in ubuntu and knoppix via cd - drive is not recognized

- every major app for this type of problem i saw recommended: seagate seatools, partition wizard, wd data lifeguard diagnostics, power data recovery, find and mount, a bunch of stuff on hiren's boot cd, test disk, etc.

Answer:External Hard Drive HELL (Unknown, Not Initialized)

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

In most cases, the drive was not recognized at a... Read more

Hi Jumanji,

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

Could you please help me to get the issue resolved or recover the data at least.

Many thanks !!

when I tried to using that, just show " cann't open volume for direct access"

my hard disk didn't appear on my computer list, but I can reject it.

Sorry to say your WD Elements is dead and you have tried everything. There is nothing left for me to do, honestly. I would have done the same thing before declaring it dead.. No DIY data recovery is possible. The only option open to you is to entrust it to Western Digital Data Recovery partners in your region. Hey

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.
I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

Hay guys,
I have a WD external with a password property. When i plug it in my laptop it works fine but after i type the password the laptop freezes for a moment then the external gets disconnected and the process starts all over again and sometimes the autoplay message shows up (after i unlock the external) and when i try to open it the laptop also freezes and a message shows up saying: "parameters are incorrect". When i opened disk management (after reading posts from many websites) i found that the external is UNALLOCATED and NOT INITIALIZED.
Can any one pleeeeeeeease help me?

Answer:unallocated - not initialized

Not enough info.

Have you been using the external successfully before? As well as successful password entry?
Did you just receive it and now want to try to use it?
Do you want to maintain the password security?
Do you have data on it that would kill you to lose?
Have you been disconnecting it while its been mounted in the operating system? (That is not good)

If just received, & no data worries, why not try to initialize it in Disk Mgmt and give it a letter?

Greetings, I will cut right down to the issue at hand seeing that I've spent two hours on this so far and no luck. The drive worked perfectly yesterday. It might of been connected through the USB port when I had an error screen (blue screen) about my SD port and then the system restarted itself. I guess the external HD failure could come from this. At the same time, even the active torrents I had, on my internal HD with no link to my external one, got deleted from Utorrent.

I have followed Jumanji steps from another thread regarding the MiniTool Partition Wizard as well as TestDisk. TestDisk does not list Mybook in the drives list nor does chkdsk command. Here are the screenshots. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:WD My Book Not initialized / Unallocated

Hello DeadlyKnight and I am sorry to hear about the My Book! :/

Unfortunately, if the drive was connected to the system in the moment of the BSOD happening, it really could be a good enough reason for the drive's state now. The Cyclic redundancy check normally occurs because of damaged or faulty drives.

Additionally, the MiniTool software shows the drive as “Bad disk”. So retrieving the data may be hard for home environment. You could try booting a Linux-based Live CD and checking if the drive is there and accessible.

Otherwise, you may have to turn to professional data recovery help, if you need the data from the drive. :/ WD has partners in the field:

MESSAGE... My 3T HD suddenly has lost its data, says it is unallocated, is not recognised by the computer, has no drive letter and the only way I can see it is by using a 3rd party software that says it has no partition anymore. I have thousands of songs I've created on it in the last 5-6 years and want the whole partition restored to normal with all of the data intact. It is also saying it is a LOGICAL partition now and it's all greyed out. Can anybody help me?

I came to this site and joined as a member because I googled for a search to find FREE partition restoration software that was not limited. That brought me to here, where I found what I was looking for, so that the FREE partition restoration software would not leave me hanging with only helping me restore a portion of the data I want to retrieve off my HD when I want to retrieve it all! Still don't know how to go about it, but at least I now have an expired pro version of partition retrieval software I'm confident and hopeful will aid me! I have confidence and faith I will retrieve the identical partition tree structure with folders and files plus all data intact... even though others have told me my HD is toast!

Hi,

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I bought a second internal hard drive about a month ago. I partitioned it and used one partition for Windows backup and the other partition is for storing data.

I moved a lot of data from my primary disk on to the partition on the new disk. Everything has been working fine until now.

This morning I booted up the computer and the new disk is not showing in Computer. I rebooted and checked the bios, the disk is showing there so I let the OS boot and then opened Disk Manager. The new disk is showing there too but now it appears as unallocated and not initialized.

How do I fix this and how do I fix Windows 7 so that it doesn't happen again? I really do not want to lose the data on the disk.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi !

I have this kind of a problem: I am working with my external Toshiba 3,5 alu case HDD 500GB and after a while of copying files into laptop it dissappears and shows up that device wasn?t recognised.
Can this be caused by not enough power in USB port?

THX for any help or workaround

Answer:Satellite A200-1SI - external HDD after a while shows up "unknown device"

Hi there,

yes this may be caused by the fact there is not enough power supplied by the USB port. firstly note that 3.5inch external USB hard drives are usually designed to be used with desktop systems due to their higher power requirements (this is also the reason that many require an external power supply of their own). my suggestion would be in future buy a 2.5inch external USB hard drive designed for use with laptops. another reason that the hard drive may disappear while copying files is that there may be a problem with the USB cable connection between the laptop and the external HDD. i would suggest checking that both ends are plugged in securely and not to place any pressure on the cables and to keep them stable.

i hope this helps you with your matter

I shouldn't say suddenly. It's a 2TB drive I had in an enclosure that took a bump off a short table the other day. It seemed fine when I tested it and pulled up all the folders. But when I went to move a file off of it, the drive disappeared. It shows up in drive manager as not initialized and not allocated. Working with a friend I tried Minitools Partition Wizard, Power Data Recovery, and Easy Recovery. None of them found anything, no partition and no files. I just wanted to check if there were any other suggestions before I gave it up. Seemed weird the folders and files showed up after the drop, then trying to actually access them made it trash itself. I figure it would be gone from the start. Thanks for any tips (if there are any).

Answer:Drive suddenly shows not initialized and not allocated

It looks like the drive is probably wrecked. It only takes a small knock to irreparably damage the heads particularly if the drive is actually powered & working at the time.
Some firms specialise in data recovery, but I have heard it is very expensive & would only be worth looking into, if the data on the drive was absolutely essential.

Hi there,

So I had a desktop with a single HDD running windows XP, the desktop overheated and automatically shutoff. The next time I powered on the PC, nothing happened - no BIOS, no beeps, nothing! The PC was pretty old so I just figured it had run it's course and I was thinking about getting a laptop anyway.

So I got a new Windows 7 laptop, and after a few days of setting it up I yanked out the hdd from the old XP desktop and plugged it into the laptop's USB port via some SATA to USB cables.

Win7 recognized new hardware and and seemed to install the drive correctly as "USB Storage", but nothing ever appeared in the Windows Explorer. I opened up the device manager and under 'Disk Drives' I saw a 'USB Drive' item. The properties on that item seemed to indicate all the drivers and such were properly installed and the 'device was working properly'. Under the 'Disk Management' section, the disk showed up - but it said it was 'unknown' and 'not initialized', so no partitions showed up (it also prompted me to 'initialize' it, which I DID NOT do).

At this point I've tried several recovery programs, but the biggest issue is that none of the programs actually see the drive, so I can't run the recovery at all. I even tried Hiren's Boot CD, but again, nothing sees the drive - although, I think that I didn't properly install the USB drivers, so I may try that... Read more

About 5 days ago my Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD started running very slow. Transfer speeds dropped to 182kb/s it previously was around 25.6mb/s. So I started backing up as much as I could, but after 5 days and only getting about 300GB backed up I decided to run chkdsk on the drive. That was a bad idea because now I cannot access the drive at all, and I still have 2.12TB of data that isn't backed up.

Drive has been in use since November 2013
It had over 106,000 files on it.

Things that I tried before Chkdsk:

In My Computer I had the drive renamed but it changed itself to local disk

But the drive info said the power on hours were 0 and the drive temperature was 32 degrees F, other external drives were showing around 30,000 power on hours and temperatures around 130-136 degrees F, the one internal drive showed 72 degrees F

Crystal Disk Info - Showed Unknown Drive and no Info

Crystal Disk Benchmark: Took a long time to run but I posted a screenshot of the results

I plugged the drive into a laptop, had the same results

I tried replacing both the power cable in the USB cable, same result

I tried plugging the USB into a USB 2.0 port instead of the 3.0 that it had been in, still the same exact transfer speed

Hello,
New here to this forum. Been searching and reading for the past week trying to get my HDD to work.

I was able to access my external HD about a week ago, watched a movie off it and fell asleep. When I awoke the next morning, powered on my laptop, it wouldn't boot up so I shut it down and unplugged the HD and powered it back on. Plugged the HD back in, computer sees it but not showing in My Computer.

Within Disk Management, it shows Disk1 - Unknown - Not Initialized.

Searched and searched and searched for different solutions, tried different things and still nothing. I have tried PW but not showing up to be able to scan it. I have a docking station so I pulled the HD out and plugged it into that. PW was able to see it but no partitions found. Tried to run TestDisk (per some other help treads instructions) with nothing found.
I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable.

I have lots of important files on this HD and I really need them. Sending it to a professional is out of the question.

I'm currently about to boot up pendrive and see if it sees anything there.

I can post any screen shots and try anything again. I have done nothing but scans scans scans.

Thank you!

Answer:WD My Book 3TB Ext HDD - Unknown - Not Initialized

Hi HAPPYSOk,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I would have been happy to help you had it not been a Western Digital External drive.

Is your drive's model No. this WDBFJK0030HBK?

Your drive is hardware encrypted and should the interface card that contains the encryption chip and the decryption key fail, even if the HDD itself is good, you can't get your data out by hooking it up as a second drive in a dock or sata connect on a desktop. You can get what data is there inside but it will be the encrypted data.

Your statement "I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable." confirms this.

The only way you can get your data back is to send the enclosure and drive to the Western Digital patronised Data Recovery Partners listed by WD here WD Support / Data Recovery Partners. Only they have been supplied with the decrypt key by WD and they will do it in a jiffy for you.

Free consultation, So get a quote from them and you will never again buy a WD drive, I am sure.

Answer:Disk unknown - not initialized

Quote:

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Hi, My DVD Recorder died, so I took out the HDD Seagate DB35.2 and plugged it in my laptop. I get the above message in disk management. I also tried Knoppix 7.0 but the disk does not show up. My scope is to save the content in the disk and move it to my PC, is it a mission impossible? Any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks Alex

Answer:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

Hello and welcome Kishor now I have gut feeling that drive night have been damaged by the sudden power failure it could have affected the platters themselves or the controller unit.
Now I think you need to test the drive using this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate or a purely physical surface test see this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run it and see my pic on how to set that up. Yesterday while using my computer my secondary drive / storage drive disappeared. I can see it in Disk Management, but I tried to use MiniTool, but it cannot see the drive. I have attached a screen shot for more info.

Is it KIA or recoverable long enough to save a couple files at least?

Thanks!

This 2.5" SATA drive is from a Toshiba that seems to have died this morning. There's no boot, no BIOS, nada.
I removed the drive and attached it via USB to my Win7 box where it shows as "Unknown, Not initialized, and offline." There are no rt-click options in disk management. I can hear the drive spinning, but it shuts down on its own occasionally, and sometimes won't power up at all without a bit of fiddiling.
I can't get any response at all from my Linux box, and neither Test Disk nor Recuva finds it at all.
Is there anything else to do, or is this drive dead, as I suspect it is?

Answer:Disk unknown, offline, not initialized.

If it's not being recognized properly, there isn't anything else that you can do.

Hi, I just got a new Y570 Laptop with a 64 gb ssd. In the disk management window, there are two hard drives listed. There is a disk 0, which has four partitions on it, and a disk 1 which is unknown and initialized. Disk 0 is the HDD that comes with the computer. When I try to initialize Disk 1, I get a message saying The disk cannot find the sector requested. What does this mean? Also, is disk 1 the ssd that I'm supposed to have? Another problem:On my hdd, I have an empty partition that says Healthy (OEM partition). It has no file system or letter assigned to it. It is 14.75 gb, and according to disk management, all 14.75 gb are free. What is it, and can I delete it without affecting anything else on my computer?

Answer:Y570 Unknown Disk 1 Not initialized/OEM Partition

hi galaxion2,first of all, do not delete the 14.75 gb partition. it's hidden/system partition that your computer will need to use it during one key recover process.secondly, as you noticed, disk1 is ssd.

I have this 160GB hard drive that I have not been using for a while, yet I am very sure it was working fine the last time I used it.

Today when I plugged it in to my new notebook that is running Windows 8.1 now, it doesn't detect my hard drive. I also tried on other notebook and it has the same issue. So I know the problem is most likely on the hard drive.

Using Command Prompt, it says Disk 1's status is "Online", but size is "0".

Here is the status at Computer Management:
Disk 1
Unknown
Not Initialized

I also tried to Initialize on MBR, but it returned me with "Incorrect function." message.

I tried "Troubleshoot" and the result says:
"USB Mass Storage Device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0
Plug the device into an available USB 2.0 port..."
My notebook has 3 USB ports where according to the manual, 2 of them are backward compatible to 2.0... I tested on each, but it is still not working.

What should I do? Although I have not been using it for a while, I wish to check the content first before formatting it. I might have some forgotten, yet important files within.

Thanks in advance. Hope I can be assisted here.

Answer:HDD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized, Online

If the controller in the enclosure failed removing the drive and slaving it into a desktop PC may let you recover your files. If the drive failed there isn't much you can do.

I am experiencing the same issue as with jenny123 but with an additional problem. I am troubleshooting a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive for my buddy. It is previously working but one day, it is not detected anymore by any device. It is found in the Disk Management however, it is listed as Unknown, Not Initialized, and not showing the partition as shown in the screenshot.

When I try to change it from Offline to Online, I am encountering the error:
"Virtual Disk Manager: The system cannot find the file specified"

I also used the DISKPART in cmd but it is not showing Disk 1 as shown below.

The external hard drive is found in disk drives but it is not showing it's model name.

I tried all the recommended software (partition wizard, testdisk, icare) but still no luck. I also tried searching online for an answer but there's no closure to their issues as well. Hope someone can help on this as he need a) the drive and b) recover the files in the external drive. Thanks!

EDIT: The drive can be seen in the Devices and Printers as shown below.

Answer:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

Hi

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

I am trying to recover data from laptop internal HDD use as an external hard drive to recover data from that HDD. I can't see my HDD in my computer but in DISK Managemnet, there is a message, "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initizalized"

Please Help!!

Thanks,

Answer:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

Hello,

My laptop's OS is 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium. I've been usng my Portable 1TB WD Elements SE external HDD for over 2 years. One fine day Win 7 displayed "Do you want to scan & fix removable drive G:" prompt. I check marked both subsequent boxes on the prompt and clicked Scan & Fix. After complete execution of the Scan & Fix (after 12 hrs approx) my Portable 1TB WD Elements SE was shown as Unallocated, Not Initialized & Unknown in the Disk Management and clicking on it windows explorer My Computer window showed the HDD with a Letter but on clicking it an error pop-up with text "Drive G: is inaccessible. Access Denied." was displayed. However, I can still see a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon that gives me a successfully removed hardware message.

I need to recover the data present on the Portable 1TB WD Elements SE external HDD.

So far I've tried Free Trial versions of RecoverMyFiles(Extended Scan), Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery(Extended Scan), Kernell Data Recovery (Extended Scan), Partition Wizard MiniTools (Quick Scan). All of them have scanned the HDD for 12 hours approximately without locating any files for recovery. Partition Wizard MiniTools detected the HDD as a Bad Disk.

Subsequently I tried PhotoRec. It scanned the HDD for 24 hours without any positive result. During pass 0 & pass 1, scanning it kept displaying error reading sector "so and so". But the files didn't populate in the recovery fo... Read more

It means the disk surface is severely damaged (has developed pretty huge number of bad sectors ). At this point, Imaging the disk and working on the copy is the best step you can do. I would suggest ;

- Create a RAW disk image using "ddrescue". Since your HDD is a 2TB one, you need a larger capacity drive like 3TB one to store the image.

- Try the trial versions of "GetDataBack" and "R-Studio" on the RAW image. Both supports working with disk images created by "dd" and "ddrescue".

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

Answer:Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

Have you attempted to run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard diagnostic software? It has a short test and an extended test.

Are you trying to recover anything from this drive? Or just trying to find out if it's broken?

Hi all, Let me start off by saying i have spent the last few hours looking online for anything that would be able to help sort out my problem and found your forum the most helpful and the only one i have signed up to. So thankyou in advance.

I have a WD1200D036 (2.5 120GB external) that is not showing in My Computer nor was it showing up in DM but after going to device management\Disk Drives then Volumes tab and clicking on Populate it turned up in Disk Management as: Disk 1 Unkown not initialized. when i click on it and select initialize disk it opens up and asks me to select disk 1 and what partition style (I just sent with MBR) then click ok. It pops up with a error "Incorrect Function"

Any ideas??

Answer:Exteranl HDD - Unknown, Not Initialized and no disc size in Disk Manag

Hi

I would suggest verifying the health condition of your hard drive first. You can use "WD Data Life Guard Diagnostic" to do that.

Download : WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD RE2

The WD tool will list both your internal HDD and USB HDD for testing. Select the USB one and choose "Extended Test" to run. Let us know the test result in next reply.

I have an Asus Vivotab Smart running full Win8.1 and a Western Digital My Passport 2TB external HDD. The hard drive works fine on other computers running 7, 8 and 8.1. The tablet can read other hard drives fine as well. But this one hard drive will not function on just the tablet. I've tried deleting the drivers and letting Windows reinstall them as well as installing the latest drivers from the WD site. I've tried using a different cord, a different adapter and other USB devices on the tablet. The HDD shows up in Devices and Printers when plugged in but not Explorer and NOT Disk Management at all. Now if I delete the drivers it appears in Disk Management as an offline and not initialized drive, no drive letter. I can't initialize it and trying to set it to Online results in an an I/O error. When i unplug it and plug it back in Windows appears to be reinstalling it, but then it's back to not appearing in Disk Management at all.

This occurred when it was just Win 8. I upgraded to 8.1 and it worked for about 8 hours. The drive installed and functioned 100% after upgrading to 8.1.....and then just stopped working again. Same issue. Again, the drive works fine in every other computer I connect it to. Every other drive and USB device works fine when connected to this tablet. Just this one drive on this one tablet refuses to initialize.

Any ideas?

Answer:Wd External HDD Not initialized

Tablet might not have enough power thru USB, smaller devices could work and this one is probably pulling too much. If that's the case you can connect it thru an USB splitter with it's own 5V power supply but that won't make it as portable.

I hope this is in the right forum, I'm not sure if this is an XP problem or a hardware issue.

I recently reinstalled XP. When I was preparing for my reinstallation, I copied all of my important data (updated drivers for all my peripherals, my documents, pictures from my digital camera, etc) and put them in an organized fashion in a folder off the root of my secondary HDD with the pretense that after I reinstalled XP (which I have in its own partition on a seperate drive) I would simply run the driver install executables, copy over my documents and pictures that I saved, etc and be ready to go with a nice fresh install of XP.
Well, after reinstalling and getting my XP install up and running, I noticed that the drive I copied everything to didn't show up in explorer. I checked the Disk Management utility and it shows the drive is there, but shows the entire drive (which was only one partition, formatted NTFS) to be Unallocated.
I seem to recall that problems such as this are not too complicated to fix, as I believe it to be something to do with the MBR for that particular drive, but as I have little experience with remedying this sort of issue, I figured I better ask for some advice and guidance, first.
I have already updated to SP2 and have had no luck still, thinking that since the drive is rather large (120GB) it may have been a problem with XP recognizing the large volume.

Any tips, comments, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Finnesko

Answer:After XP reinstall, secondary HDD shows Unallocated

Right click on My Computer, go down to Manage. Click on Disk Management. In here you will see your HD's. In the right panel, right click on the Unallocated drive and click on Mark Partition as Active. You can also change the drive letters as you wish in here, but DON'T change your primary (C) drive.

This disc (one of 4 320Gb WD sata hdd's) was replaced with a new hdd drive and the array was then rebuilt with the nvidia utilty that came with the asus (Asus M2N32 WS PRO) motherboard. When the rebuild was complete the array didn't show up in the "my computer" section and has disappeared, and it now shows as unallocated in the disc manager. Is there a way to recover the data on the array? See Disk Man.JPG for printscreen of Disk Management.

I tried following the Mini Partition Tool advice and did not find the external drive on the software. Please see Mini Partion Tool.JPG for print screen.

I am thinking about buying another external HD 2TB and clone this drive to recover the data. Any advice to clone a drive that I cannot select.

I've seen that and the HDDs had truly crashed, wasn't anything I could do but in a couple of instances I sent them off to a firm that recovers data if the platters/disks in them haven't been physically damaged. Sometimes the read-write heads will scratch the platters and they are then truly screwed up.

Hi,

I'm not even sure what the topic title should be. But I can tell you about my problem.

I plugged in a new Bipra 250 GB NTFS external Hard Drive with the intention of using it to clone my C Drive.  A scan of the new drive reported no errors.  However, when I tried to run AOMEI Backupper it quit with this message:

Information Code:4120
Failed to adjust partition size.

Although I could see the drive when I clicked on Safely Remove Hardware, I could not find the drive in Explorer.

In Device Manager the disk was listed as Mass Storage Device USB Device.  I tried updating the driver, but MS says the driver is up to date.

In Disk Management, the disk showed  as Disk 1  Basic Online.   232.88 GB  - Unallocated.

Online I found information that said to right click the drive and choose New Simple Volume.  I did that. It ran. Still the drive goes unrecognized and I am unable to clone it.

I tried a reboot with the drive plugged in.  When Windows started, I could see the drive in Explorer but a message said:  Location not available.

Well, dirty word. -- And now that is gone too and the drive once more shows as unallocated in Disk Management.

More info online tells me to partition the drive after running New Simple Volume. But now I'm afraid to do that, and I don't know why that is necessary.

I recently got a new HDD and took it to a friend's house to copy over some of the data he had (approx. 800GB).

The disk had never been used prior, so he had to initialize it when I brought it over; he's running either Win8 or Win8.1, and it was initialized as GPT with all the other settings at default. It was hooked up via a SATA > USB 3.0 adapter.

I brought the disk home and plugged it directly into my mobo, and Windows was telling me I had to initialize it; without thinking I clicked to initialize it as GPT, and haven't yet created a new simple volume.

What I'm wondering, is if there's a tool (preferably free) I can use either in Windows or a bootable linux distro (the Ubuntu I have doesn't have drivers for my USB wireless adapter, so I'm without internet whenever I boot into it; therefore the distro will need to come with the tool pre-installed) which will be able to copy the data from the used sectors to the unused ones within the same disk, so I don't need to worry about overwriting the data I'm trying to recover. I'd like to do it this way because each of my other two drives have 14.5 and 44 GB free, so I can't recover it to another drive then copy it all back

If there aren't any tools that do that, any suggestions other than bringing it back and copying the data again? (it took pretty long and was a bit of a pain, plus he's leaving for a week in a couple days.)

Not sure I understand your situation and I don't think I ever heard of such a tool.

I'd think in terms of partitioning the disk and putting all the data in one partition to shield it.

Why GPT?

This is purely a data disk, no OS?

Hi, papaikolaou1980. Welcome to Major Geeks!

Unfortunately, none of the screenshots are showing here. But, if you've done everything listed in your post and the drive isn't showing properly, I'd say it "died" and if still under warranty, you should get a replacement. If it's a "green" series rather than "blue" or "black", I'd avoid getting another one as there have been many dependability issues with WD's "green" series.

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

2) You'll Should see a list of Disks, Is Disk 1 listed with no partition letter assigned? if so continue

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

Hi,
I have an WD Elements 1023 external hard drive which I want to connect to my laptop which runs a 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium. When I connect the device, it shows up in the device manager and the driver is installed properly.
However, it doesnt show up as a drive and in the Disk Management, it shows as Disk1 unknown. When I try to Initialize the disk, I get a error that the "The Media is write protected".
Its been a real pain as I have a lot of data init and unable to access it.
It wud be great if anybody could suggest me a solution for this.

Answer:External HDD not getting initialized in Disk Manager

Have you tried this on another PC - is it recognised?
Have you tried manually assigning a drive letter in disk management? This article gives you step by step instructions on how to do this.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

I have this WD 1TB external drive that stopped working a while ago. I am trying to initialize it in order to perhaps try to recover data from it using a Data Recovery Wizard.

When connecting the drive via USB, it only sometimes shows up in 'Devices and Printers' as connected through USB (ie, it allows me to click 'Eject My Book' in the task bar). When it shows up there, I can also see it in Disk Management as 'Disk 2, Unknown, 931.51 GB, Not Initialized' with a little red downward facing arrow icon.

When I right click the icon (with the red arrow) and choose Initialize, it hangs a bit and then shows an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

When I run 'USB device viewer' (UVCView) this is what shows up next to that device :

Well this is my friend external driver and inside it my friend have 300gb files please help me

Sorry for my bad english

Answer:external drive say it was online, not initialized, and sometimes RAW

Hi andremarb,

Welcome to SevenForums.

From the description of your problem, I would think that the cable could have got damaged due the unceremonious kick that the HDD received. So as a first step use a new cable and check how your external drive behaves.

If the problem persists, please start a new thread explaining your problem in detail. Furnish full details of your external drive make/manufacturer/ Model /Capacity along with a full screenshot of how the drive appears in Windows Disk Management. Please adhere to the guidelines here Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

In the new thread, even if it is not me - so unreliable these days , some one else can address your concern. So move on with the new thread.

EDIT: Just noted that your post has been moved on to a new thread. But this post still holds - more details and screenshot after changing to a new cable.

I restarted the PC , after it's booting and logging in to windows, I didnt found the HardDisk in "This PC", I goes to windows 10 64 bit' disk management console and a popup window appears asking me if I want to initialize it.
Any solution do you have for this?

I have an WD 1TB hard disk which failed to initialize recently. It gives me an I/O error message. I found a few old threads here with similar problem and tried out the suggested steps. I ran WD diagnostic tool and passed the Quick test and Extended test(Screenshot attached). I would like to avoid the zero test and formatting of my data if possible. The hard disk is almost full and recovering them after formatting would be really painful. I would be really grateful if someone could please help me out?

Answer:1TB WD external hard disk not initialized

Is you have a empty hard drive kicking about or somewhere to store you data, move it all to there.
Then format you drive, see if that works.

Hi All,
Need some expert assistance here.

Please note that this happened when I was away from my computer and it was left on.  My wife came back from work and noticed the following after she confirmed there was a power failure.  So, I'm going by what the wife says:

1) After coming home, my wife noticed the power went out on our street.  After turning the comp back on, a BSOD came up on the computer screen (I'm not sure what it said).

2) She turned off the computer manually and then re-booted....it went into some type of "Repair" and it recommended to continue, so my wife says yes and the computer did its thing.

3) After, re-booting all seemed fine, programs, files, internet was intact.

However, after I used it in the evening, I noticed that one of my partitions was missing.  Upon viewing Disk Management and the partition structure in Windows, there was a section on the drive that says "Unallocated Space" of about 80GB.  It appears in place of where the missing partition is supposed to be.

The missing partition is NOT the Windows partition (I can boot up no problem), but rather where I keep photos, videos, movies and my iTunes music library.

I've tried booting to GParted Live CD and when the graphical depiction of my partitions come up, it shows the same thing....my primary boot partition (C drive) and the Unallocated space where my D drive is supposed to be.

Next, I tried using TestDisk to... Read more

Answer:Partition disappears after power failure, now shows Unallocated.

If you used Testdisk, did you press the upper case "P" when the partition was highlighted? Are your files listed? Did you use the Testdisk for Windows version? You can recover your files by using the ":" key to select your files/folders and the upper case "C" to copy. The default location for recovery would be the folder you unzipped Testdisk to. I think recovering the files this way would be the safest. Then you could partition and format the unallocated space again after retrieving all your files. If you have an external drive, you could open testdisk from there. Using the "a" key would select all files and recover them to your external drive.

Please I have just coupled a new computer, and after installing windows vista Ultimate, I installed my backup drive a 500gb sata drive with all my files on it, but windows did not show it so i went to the disk management under computer management and it is showing my drive as unallocated.
please help i do NOT want to format this drive. the drive works fine a a previous computer which i no longer have.

Please advise.

Answer:SATA Drive shows unallocated space in VISTA pls HELP!!!

If it is reading as unallocated, then Vista cannot read it, and thinks it is not formated. It could be a corrupted part of the disk, which stops the sytem reading it. Possibly easiest test is to put it in another computer and see if it reads, if not, chances are the disk is dead. Other alternative is to get an external SATA enclosure, throw the disk in, and see if it is recognise. If not, it would give a good impression of being dead

Ok...So the title speaks for itself, and I'm stuck. My PC recently locked up b/c of my video card. Something w/in the audio driver for the HDMI/DVI drivers do not completely agree with adobe flash 10.0 and on, but thats a different problem. What I am trying to do is recover my data from my brand new 1.5TB Seagate 7200 RPM HDD. So my PC locked up, forcing me to manually restart...which happens on and off 100's of times since ive had the video card, and am very dissapointed and will never buy another XFX or possibly Radeon ever again!! Anyways..after I restarted, my HDD wouldn't show up in my compter which immediately made me freak out. I checked device manager and there it was...went into manage>storage, and there it was as 1373GB unallocated space...WTF!!! I have downloaded and tried a few programs, tried Raw Recovery and just gave me a bunch of useless files. I have about 850GB of data on there and I am sure that I can get my info off of it as long as i dont delete the partition, but not sure exactly what method would produce said results. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!

Answer:NTFS Formatted HDD shows up as unallocated space after I/P shutdown

Hello Kritos,

Have you checked the drive for errors? Is the drive an internal or external drive? Have you got backups of all the files on that drive?

Also, Easeus and minitool do free programs called Partition Recovery:

Free Partition Recovery Software - Recover Deleted FAT/NTFS/HFS/HFS+/HFSX/Ext2/Ext3 Partition in Windows and Mac OSX.

http://www.minitool-partitionrecover...overymore.html

Just make sure you don't write any data onto that drive until you have managed to recover your files/partition. As you'll be writing over the data and will make it unrecoverable.

How does suspicious Unallocated logical partition shows up suddenly?

I have a black screen during start up issue. I posted a thread (long story). I have Lenovo Z580 Laptop. I did not add any hardware or alter HDD configuration after factory install.

Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

As this community, provided guidance on my thread. I created a Win 7 repair disk using another computer with Win 7, 64 bit.

With community help. I run the partition Wizard on this Z580 and leaned that a suspicious 201.87 MB Unallocated logical partition shown in Partition Wizard.

As this unallocated - 200 MB sitting as 5th partition and violates MBR characteristics and cause booting issue.

I have a Dell Inspirion E1705 laptop. It powers on but nothing on the screen and no keyboard response. Its old so all I want to do is get some files off the drive. Not worried about fixing the laptop. I took the drive out and plugged into my desktop as a second drive. It doesn't show up in Computer but does list in device manager and disk manager. It shows as unallocated space in disk manager. I attached a picture that shows the error when I try to initialize the disk. No other options are available. I've tried using a few file recovery programs but with no luck. What else can I do? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more
