Windows update not working. Win7 64bit

Question: Windows update not working. Win7 64bit

Recently I learned of the free upgrade to windows 10. I was supposed to click on an icon in the task bar that did not appear. I was instructed to check to see if my Window updates were up to date. I went to windows update and it did not function. I followed the update steps listed in the post and had the following results;
Ran SURT, it successfully completed
ran sfc/scannow as Admin, got the following error: 'Windows Resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
Tried windows update, got error 80070246
CBS Folder (zipped) is 36 MB and will not upload. Is there something in the folder that is needed specifically? There are some big .cab files in there. I've zipped and attached the CBS.log file

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know when update stopped working as I haven't checked it in sometime. Perhaps two months. The update history shows updates to MSIE and not much else.
I have used CCleaner to clean my registry regularly but never saw any bad effects.

Preferred Solution: Windows update not working. Win7 64bit

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It looks to me like you have registry corruption.
I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Windows update for IE10 on Windows 7 64bit fails continuously with error code 9c59. I tried the stand alone updater with the same results. All other windows updates complete successfully, it's just IE10 that continually fails.

Don't know if this is related but I do have problems with IE8 (current browser). After a while, an open IE window will become non responsive and can't be closed out. I have to use task manager to close it down. I have sent off the reports to MS, but no solution has appeared.

I've attached the cbs file. Let me know what else I can do. Thanks.

Answer:Windows update for IE10 on win7 64bit fails with error code 9c59

There are no significant file errors in either SFC or CheckSUR logs.

In these cases, it has sometimes been a solution to uninstall IE9, reboot a couple of times, and then reinstall IE9 again, before installing IE10 successfully.
It's worth a try

After installing Windows 10 pro my WiFi will not connect. I have tried updating the driver (Ralink RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adaptor) and it tells me its upto date. im assuming this driver is the issue but not sure how i can fix this. My laptop model is: HP Pavilion dv6t-6c00 CTO Notebook, Windows 7 home premium (x64)

Answer:WiFi not working after update to Windows 10 64bit

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer, would be to try the W8 driver for the RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi card your notebook has. I am not surprised that it doesn't work on W10, since there are no W8.1 or W10 drivers for that model card. This package contains the driver installation package for the Realtek RTL8188CE wireless LAN Controller in the supported notebook models running a supported operating system. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59181.exe

Today i updated my Windows 7 laptop to the Windows 10 Home 64bit OS. Everything seems to work fine, except the WIFI. Windows does find my adapter, but won't wake it up. My built-in wifi button (f12) has got a red light on it, even when I pressed it. I tried the Windows 8 wireless button driver, but i didn't solve my problem. With that driver installed the button switches between airplanemode on/off. Not between WIFI. Also in the WIFi settings wifi turn off. When I try to switch it on, it directly turns back to "off". Wired internet works flawless. I gues it's an driver issue, so i was wondering if there is an driver upcomming? Or is there another solution to switch it on.Please help me. It's very annoying.

Last year or so I had an issue with KB2446709. My computer was one of those that ended up in the endless reboot loop, after uninstalling the KB I was back up and running but have since been unable to update Windows.

I have spent the better part of the last 3 days finally trying to fix this. I have gotten the error nailed down to one last file that for some reason is not included in the KB2446709 stand alone installer. I have grabbed that file already and expanded it, moving all files within listed in my Checksur.log file and have whittled them down to a single error. It's this last error I can not seem to get rid of as one file was missing from that package.

The file in question is Package_for_KB2446709~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.2.mum and
Package_for_KB2446709~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.2.cat

I was able to manually install all other security updates that have been waiting for the last year, this is the last one to get finished.

An in place install or upgrade is not an option.

Am currently at work, but am willing to post logs when I get home.

System is a homebrew, no new hardware installed prior to errors, error began showing after failed KB2446709 install and subsequent removal.

Have already tried the System Update Readiness tool, always completes but does nothing. As I said when I started this there were 4 errors listed in the Checksur.log and I have gotten it down to this last one.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

SO close! Help me get this ball across the goal line!

I have a old "Microtek ScanMaker E3" scsi flatbed scanner that originally came with an ISA scsi interface (to give you some idea of how old it is). I connected it to my PC using a equally ancient Tekram 390F pci SCSI card (c.1995) that I've been using with 32bit WinXP Pro for years.

The scanner has an 8-1/2" x 14" scanning bed, 9600dpi and 48bit color reproduction. It works great and I see no reason to spend a few hundred dollars to replace it just for Win7 compatibility, so I'm trying to get it to work with the 64bit version of Windows 7.

To complicate things, the company that made my SCSI card (Tekram) went out of business years ago, so the 32bit XP driver was the last they made. But after MUCH Googling, I found a 64bit Win7 compatible driver for another card using the same chipset, and low & behold, Windows 7 recognized it! It then "detected" my scanner for the first time, but didn't have a driver.

Again, after much searching, I found a Vista 64bit version of Microtek's "ScanWizard" scanner software with 64bit driver, and now 64bit Windows 7 detects my scanner! Yeah!

But when I try to access the scanner, I get an error telling me I "must install Color Matching System first" for the scanner to work. I don't remember any such software being needed to use the scanner with XP, and there is no such program in the ScanWizard software... Read more

Answer:Almost got my old scanner working w/Win7 64bit

That Microtek ScanMaker E3 scsi flatbed scanner ... didn't even work well with Windows XP... and the cost in time and components to attempt to make it work are much higher than a decent Canon or Epson scanner which can be had fof $40... Less if used...

On what system are you runny SCSI ?

Installed new SSD on a Dell Vostro laptop. Installed Win7 Pro 64-bit on it...no issues during install. Connectivity is no problem, am able to get to all web sites. When I try to do Windows Update, though, it sits on "Checking for Updates" forever, never moves from that. I tried Microsoft's FixIt program and it comes back with an error...

Windows Update error 0x80070005 (2016-07-28-T-12_33_39P) -- Not Fixed.

I Googled the 0x80070005 error and tried every suggestion somebody had. Still no fix.

Any ideas what I can look for? Again, brand new drive. SFC comes back with no errors. Has connectivity.

Hi,After a completely botched up attempt to upgrade to Win10, I was left with no other option than to reinvoke Win 7 Starter using the System Recovery CD Disks. Upon completion of the recovery I find that Windows Update check facility will not detect and download any updates, it simply keeps showing the "Checking for updates" dialogue box with the green progress indicator continually churning away. I installed Belarc Advisor which clearly indicates there are some 120 odd security hot fixes to be downloaded and installed. The only update that did download was Windows Update Agent ver 7.6.7600.320. I checked the Properties/Details of file Windows\System32\Wuaueng to confirm that the version 7.6.7600.320 was in fact installed, which it was. I ran both Microsoft Fixit50123-WinUpdate and WindowsUpdateDiagnostic applications but without success. I manually downloaded and installed the necessary pre-requisite patches and install file to raise Internet Explorer from ver 8 to ver 11 in the hope that it might make a difference but to no avail. Can anyone offer any assistance please as, until the updates are downloaded and istalled, the PC is too vulnerable to be used. Many thanks - Bob Deb.

Answer:Win7 Starter - Windows Update not working

You could try this:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...Select this download "All supported x86-based versions of Windows 7 SP1" (assuming you are 32 bit). Double click the downloaded file and hope for the best. Most likely it is the version you now have but I suppose that there is a vague chance it will jigger WU into life. Restart the computer afterwards.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Hi all,

I currently have a laptop with Win7 Professional 32bit, I read that it's possible to update it to Win10 without having to format the hard drive, is that correct?
And will it be possible to upgrade to a Win10 64bit version as well?

Kind regards

you should be able to update win7 to win10 w/o losing anything. make an image backup & image recovery cd first justincase. a lot depends on the specs of the laptop.

you need a multi core processor for windows x64 & you should have a fair amount of memory, ie. 4gb.

No outgoing e-mail after win7 64bit update?
Hi guys,Yesterday after much hesitation I decided to apply the windows 7 service pack 1 for 64bit. I had hesitated in applying this update after hearing rumours that it may cause internet connectivity problems. After completing the update I indeed discovered to my horror that in fact my internet (Orange.fr ISP) had indeed ceased to function along with my e-mail, nothing at all was working. In view of the fact that my machine previously had been working very well Without SP1 .I did a System Restore to before the offending Service Pack was installed. After this my internet came back and my incoming mail was restored using Windows Live Mail, But I now cannot send, reply to or forward any e-mail at all.On further checking,I find that I can send e-mails if I go to my ISP website's(Orange.fr as I live in France)messaging page, This suggests to me that a corruption of my Windows Live mails has taken place, but of course I could be on the wrong track. Can anyone give any ideas as to what may be the cause and more importantly a solution to my problem,

Answer:No outgoing e-mail after win7 64bit update?

My mom gave me her old printer, since she got a new one, and I want to see if I can use it on my computer that I recently installed Windows 7 64bit on. It's a HP Photosmart 7350. I looked on the HP site for drivers but it seems there aren't any to download seeing as Win7 has a printer driver download thing built in. So I looked for a driver specifically made for Photosmart 7350 but there aren't any. When I looked for it on the web, apparently there is an alternate I can use (Deskjet 5550), which I installed from the "Add a printer" menu in the Devices and Printers window. It detected my printer but it doesn't print. When I try printing something I get errors. So I came here to see what I could do to fix this. I'm not sure what the problem is. Could I be using the incorrect drivers? Or is it something else?

Hello. Hopefully someone here could shed some light on this problem that have been messing with my mind since yesterday when I bought this printer. I have e-mailed Lexmark support but honestly don't expect that much from it.

So. I have this S505 all in one device. I connect it with USB, NOT Wifi. Note that it works fine when connected with USB in my Laptop, which uses Vista 32bit.

The software and driver installation seems to go as it should, and windows says the printer is ready to use. When I try to print something (Tried Paint, Wordpad, Mozilla, Notepad...) the document shows up in the printing monitoring window, but nothing happens, it just gets stuck there. If I try to cancel it, it changes status to cancelling, but doesn't go away. I get the error "Communication not available, the printer cannot communicate with the computer". This also happens when I try to update the firmware. Sometimes the firmware installer doesn't even find the printer although it shows up as ready to use in device manager. Here's the weird thing though: I have actually managed to print a few documents at what seems to be random occasions. Then it just stops working again. The printer itself works fine aswell, when copying or printing the test page.

Here's what I've tried so far:
- Installing software and drivers from the CD that came with the printer
- Installing software and drivers downloaded from Lexmark support
- Not installing anything (all previous ... Read more

Dear community,

I plan to update to Windows 7 64 bit. My notebook is Toshiba Qosmio F50-10M with a preinstalled VISTA32bit.

Is there a need to update the BIOS prior installing the new OS? I read that there is a BIOS update f??ľr VISTA64bit available but none I discovered for Win7 64bit.

Can you give a clue?

I am confident and glad to own such a powerful notebook but this not completed OS named VISTA is driving me nuts increasingly reading all those nice reports concerning the benefits of Windows7!

Eager to read your welcomed responses

Yours,
Starmind

Answer:Qosmio F50 - Need to update BIOS in order of installing Win7-64bit

Hi

There is a BIOS for Vista 32bit and 64bit.
There is no special Win 7 BIOS.

If you want to install Win 7 64bit then I would recommend using the BIOS for Vista 64bit. If you want to install Win 7 32bit -> choose vista 32bit BIOS.

Usually it should be possible to update the BIOS running Win 7 as well but because it?s a BIOS for Vista OS, I recommend updating the BIOS running Vista.

I've been trying to solve this for some months now.I bought my lenovo G460 with nvidia M310 (with hdmi) this year and have not been able to get the hdmi port to work. I have two lcd displays one in our lab and another one at home (LG 2361V-PF) which have hdmi connections in the back.In the beginning I was able to get my notebook to work on the display in our office. However, now both displays (work+home) are not working. I have tried to reinstall latest nvidia drivers as of 2010-11-02 (ver. 8.16.11.8990) from lenovo, completely restore Operating system and tried different hdmi cables. I have even tried to use original drivers and also downgrade that to a lower version all with no luck. I have even taken my LG LCD display to the LG After Service Warranty office and have found no issues wrong with the Monitor itself. I am sure I have taken all the trouble-shooting methods into consideration so a simple question is...Is the hdmi port defective?I will take my laptop into the Lenovo After Care service center this week, but before then is there anyone who has had this issue and solved it?  -->or is it just a hardware problem easily fixed with warranty replacement parts. Thank you

After lot of hours, I have finally found a workaround to my issue... The SL500 doesn't have a Lenovo Windows 7 image (see here), so I have used my own licence of Windows 7, which is supported on this machine (see here). The issueSo, after I used ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU), which I use and recommend as best practice for many years now, we found we could no longer connect to our Virgin Mobile Broadband (an Australian WWAN provider)with my internal Wireless WAN (WWAN) card, Ericson E3507g .  When I used the USB WWAN Modem that came from my ISP, it worked fine, so I knew the issue wasn't with my provider. The hard work I tried rolling back drivers and software, no change. I kept getting either errors about not being able to authenticate the WWAN connection or that the provider couldn't be found. After pulling my hair out, I made an complete backup to my server using Rescue & Recovery, and installed a vanilla copy of Windows 7 Professional 64bit, wiping the HDD clean & disabling Windows Update in the process. I then installed only the requirements for the latest version of ThinkVantage Access Connections (TVAC), see here, but still I had the same issue. Again, went back to a clean vanilla copy of Windows 7, and installed everything as before, except the older WWAN drivers from here, but still no success.  Now it appears the newer version of TVAC can't work with the older version of the WWAN drivers.&nb... Hi Folks,

My Windows 7 home premium 64bit SP1 has failed to update since 2012. Every time I tried, the system update ended up with error code 8007370B: Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I have followed the steps at

Windows Update Posting Instructions

and installed the SURT.

It installed correctly but did not solve the problem, still the same error code: 8007370B.

I have also tried running sfc /scannow in an elevated cmd, but it failed with the following output:C:\windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Attached is my CBS.zip and windows update error screenshot. I want to point out that I have installed several versions of SURT from 2012 till now, none of which fixed the problem, but may have generated some logs to CBS.

Thanks for any possible solutions.

It simply sits on checking for updates and never finishes. I've tried EVERY solution going - ive reset windows update, done all the fix it programs supplied by microsoft to no avail.

As I said, this is a totally clean install, no anti virus, no 3rd party firewall, updates attempted via both ethernet and wifi. Am I missing a driver of some sort? There are no exclamation marks or warnings in device manager?!

It's doing my head in. What am i doing wrong?!

One observation, both installs have required me to activate via phone, it wouldn't work via the internet?! Is this related in any way?
Drivers installed:
Chipset
Video
Audio
LAN
WLAN
Touchpad

I got them off this page: http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/...untry=8&page=1

Is there any that I'm missing that are important?

Thanks in advance!

Dan

Answer:Satellite C660 PSC0LE - Win7 64bit clean installation - update issue

Is SP1 already installed on your Windows 7 system?
If not, you could download this from here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...service-pack-1

Otherwise I recommend you to check the MS knowledge base regarding the Windows 7 update issues.

You don’t’ use the Toshiba image and therefore this isn’t Toshiba notebook problem but system issue.

A couple of weeks ago I got error messages from Security Essentials when restarting a PC (Win7/32, SP1). I could not uninstall the program using the Control Panel, so I used the FixIt-utility from Microsoft.
This made things worse.
I am not able to run Windows Update anymore (error code: 80073712 ? Windows could not search for new updates).
There are no system restore dates going back before I started having the problems two weeks ago.
When running sfc /scannow (as admin) I get the following error message:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
Tried the same function using the Win 7 (SP1) install disk. Get the following error:
There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete.
Restarted several times with the same results.
Since SFC was not working I tried to do a repair install. During the compatibility check I got this message:
Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing.
I have tried several reboots and also checked for a pending.xml file. Nothing.
Any suggestions/ideas? It is a standard PC I use for Office apps.

Hello,

I am owner of a Tecra S10 and using Vista 64bit as operating system.
Unfortunately Toshiba is not really supporting this OS version, because the offered drivers have to be collected over different products which are using same hardware.

Does anyone knows wether Toshiba will start sharing drivers for Vista 64bit soon and what's about Win7?

I think Vista 64bit drivers will run under Win7 as well, but **** when will they officially release drivers for Vista 64bit or Win7?

Any info would be interesting.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Tecra S10 - Vista 64bit and Win7 64bit driver question

> I think Vista 64bit drivers will run under Win7 as well, but **** when will they officially release drivers for Vista 64bit or Win7?
Why you don?t contact the Toshiba and ask the guys for this info?
Then you could share this info with us? I mean this is a user to user forum and I doubt there are some official guys from Toshiba?

But I?ve got a own theory; I think the Win 7 drivers will be released after the official Win 7 release. At this time you can get only the Beta version Win 7.

Regarding the Vista 64bit OS drives;
I checked the Toshiba European driver page and the 64bit Vista drivers are available so where is the problem?

Cheers mate

Hi every one,

i have this machine which is causing too much headache for me,

this machine was having Windows XP 64 Bit,
and it had a lot of BSOD crashes, then i just decided that it's the time to make the move to Windows 7 for this high performance machine, since i was not able to upgrade to Windows 7 because of some applications just working on Windows XP 64 Bit, but now there is a copy of it,

Any way i'm still having those BSOD crashes,
I have replaced the SSD 500GB hard drive with another regular hard drive with no results,
tried to remove and install nVidia Driver,
tried to install a different version of that driver with no results,
tried to remove McAfee AV and installed Kaspersky Internet security 2013 also no result,

now i have grabbed all the data using SF Tool, and i really hope that u can help me with that issue.

thank you

I just spent the night doing a clean install of Win7 Home Premium 64bit. Windows Live Mail was working right up to the moment I decided to go to bed, about 8 am.

But now when I try to open it, it just shows the busy cursor for about five seconds before opening an error window which says "Windows Live Mail has stopped working."

No kidding, eh?

Another message opens with it and says "Do You want to send more information about the problem?" I then click on the "Details" button and it says the following "WERD164.tmp.hdmp" from one of my App/Temp folders might be helpful for MS to work on the problem. So I send the message and the error window closes. But Live Mail just won't open, period.

I tried doing a repair of all the Live Essentials from the Add/Remove Programs panel and it says it successfully did the repair. But it still doesn't work! So I uninstalled the Live Mail program, alone, from the Live Essentials package and then reinstalled it. And still it won't work!!!

Does anyone know what is going on?

Answer:Windows Live Mail will not run in Win7 64bit

Amazingly, I found out what the problem was ...

It was a program called ATi Tray Tools. Once I uninstalled it, Live Mail worked perfectly again!

Now if that isn't amongst the strangest conflicts I've ever seen

Hi,
I have recently tried to install a 64 bit version of XP on my Dell Inspiron N5050.
It was running Win7 before and I needed XP for work.
I made the partition, and installed XP and now Windows 7 will not boot. I tried installing EasyBCD but since the drivers were not installed on the new OS, I can't connect to the internet at all.
I just need some help on possibly removing the XP partition and recovering with the win7 recovery partition so I can just run XP on a virtual console.
When I boot the computer it does not give me the option to use the recovery disk or boot windows 7 at all.
Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks

I have upgraded 3 home computers (laptops and desktops) to WIN 10 since launch and have been part of the Windows Insider program for 8 months - (identifying problems with NVIDIA drivers and the like). All family computers have upgraded with minimal fuss apart from HP Elite 8200 SFF - core i5 vpro. Be aware that this PC passes all hardware diagnostics and has new hard drive and compatible memory and works 100% without error on Win 7 Home - motherboard and processor are out of the box two weeks ago. The PC has been reset to Win 7 since. After install there were many blue screens including:- Memory management errorsBad pool header errorMultiple Frequent internet requests (probably from microsoft OneDrive based storage) I understand that this machine has not been tested as part of a compatibility check by HP / Microsoft. My question is:- Will there be updates to the HP Driver Support site in the near future to include Windows 10 64bit drivers for relevant machines? Or links included for Intel Chipset drivers when available for Win10?

Anytime. Glad to have been of assistance. Maybe try again before the free period expires. It is possible they will have worked out some bugs and release more updates to W10. Who knows...it could even be the onboard Intel W10 graphics driver that is buggy. I've had my 8200 Elite run XP Pro x64, Vista Business, W7 Pro, W8.1 Pro and now W10 Pro working perfectly on each OS.

Hey,

I purchased the Win 7 Pro Upgrade 32bit via digitalriver, but I've been doing some reseach and probably should have selected the 64bit version.

- Any ideas how I can get the 64bit version?

- For those who ordered the 32bit back-up disc kit for the extra $15 and have received it, does it come with both 32bit & 64bit?

- I've already installed and activated the 32bit version, but when I go to install the 64bit version, will I need to / is there a way to deactivate my initial 32bit install or will this not matter?

Thanks for your advice.

The first two questions call Digital River about a refund and reorder. Have heard that some have had success with that. No need to un activate however if you decide to try to use that Key again then you will have to call MS and talk to them to make it work on another pc if that is your intent. Good luck to you and enjoy!

Hey everyone. I usually take a certain amount of pride in being able to fix these things myself. But after 12 hours yesterday I'm about ready to flip. Here's my problem...
First, so we're on the same page, system specs:

Intel i5 2500K
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3
G.Skill Sniper 1600mhz 2x4GB

2x 500GB HDD
650w Seasonic PSU

Windows 7 Professional 64bit OEM

Everything up to date, all drivers installed. No overclock, no fiddling with RAM timings. No signs of hardware instability.

Now, the story...
Everything was peachy, system works great. Was gettin' my BF3 on. Deus Ex:HR was lots of fun. Then down the right hand near the clock, on the desktop, I got 'Windows 7, build 7601, your copy of Windows is not genuine'.
Basically, I'm having trouble activating Windows. I'll run you through what I've tried...

Tried opening Activation Wizard using 'slui.exe' and 'slui.exe 4' - One of several things happens.
1. Doesn't work, it crashes and gives an error code (next time I can recreate the error I'll include the code.
2. Works, online activation goes smoothly but then 30secs later it goes back to being not genuine. This is sometimes accompanied by error messages saying that the Microsoft Software Protection Platform service has stopped working.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Having said that, I would suspect that there is a hardware problem that is causing all your errors - check the RAM using MemTest86+ for a few hours, and check the hard drive using the drive manufacturer's test utility.

Hi folks.

I have searched through the various threads that deal with this topic but have not seen anything that deals with this specifically.

I have a custom built computer I put together last year. I installed Win7 32bit at the time because I didn't want to bite the bullet and reinstall everything. That time has now arrived.

My computer has:

i7 Core 960 2.67GHz
8GB Ram
1TB HDD (Win7 32bit installed)
600GB HDD

I purchased an OEM DVD of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and an Intel 180GB SSD drive.

I want to install the SSD drive on the computer and install Win7 64bit OS as a DUAL BOOT. This way I will be able to choose to migrate my applications at my own pace. As I install a 64bit version of my Photoshop CS6 for example, I will delete it in the 32bit OS once I have all my settings, brushes etc. moved over.

Should I ?

1. Install the SSD and get it recognized by the BIOS and the 32bit OS.
2. Boot from the DVD of the 64bit OS and choose the SSD as the location of the installation.
3. Reboot the computer after installation complete

and at that point I should get the dual boot screen?

The above is how I understand the process based on some tutorials I've seen for dual booting XP and Vista. Does this work for Win7 32 and Win7 64?

Answer:Dual Boot Win7 32bit and Win7 64bit on a second SSD drive

Easy - install the SSD and disconnect all the HDDs. Then install Win7 on the SSD and make the SSD second in the boot sequence (first should be the CD/DVD reader). Then reconnect the HDDs.

When you want to boot from your 32bit system, temporarily change the boot sequence (usually via F12 at power-on).

I have a new Toshiba Laptop (Win7 64bit CORE i3). I would like to run (via usb) and old hdd from my desktop which was 32bit Win7.
I have the old hard drive in a SATA enclosure and running it via USB to my laptop. When I attempt to either copy or read the old hard drive I get a write protect error. I have tried
the MS registry changes to remove "write protection" but the registry entry they call for is non existent in my laptop registry.
My last post on this was annotated as solved...but my explanation was weak. I do not want to run this drive as a permanent addition to my system, I just need to copy some files from the old drive to the new one.
If I attempt to use Control Panel/Disk Management it tells me the old drive is not "initialized". Both options to initialize don't work. Please help I have some very important medical records that must be copied from old hdd to new.

Just wondering if it would be possible to backup a Win7 32bit system, install a Win7 64bit system then restore the 32bit to the 64bit system?

Simon

Answer:Macrium Reflect: Restore Win7 32bit to Win7 64bit?

NO -- a clean install is required to move from one to the other. IF you restore an MR backup over an install, it replaces the entire contents of the partition. So basically, you would be going back to the version that you saved to backup.

Hello

I have purchased and downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows7 Professional (no CDs or media here only download version)

I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Win7 32

Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB)

Now I would like to go from Win7 32bit to 64bit

When I try and run the Win7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only"
I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.

I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Win7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

Can someone help me here?

Thanks

Answer:Win7 (32bit) to Win7 (64bit) upgrade install error

I believe to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you will have to boot off the DVD. The installer is a 64 bit application that won't run under 32-bit. Find instructions to create a DVD if you don't already have it.

Good luck!

Hi all,

Hope all is well. I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite P855-S520 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), SP1 already installed and would like to upgrade it Windows 7 Ultimate.

I had already purchased a retail version for Win7 Ultimate before (the full version not the upgrade) and would like to use this for the upgrade.

I looked around the forums for some advice and found some very useful stuff but I would appreciate if someone could help with the following. My apologies if the answers were posted already. Must have missed them.

1. I read about the Windows Anytime Upgrade feature. Will AU work with the full Win7 Ultimate retail key or does it specifically work with an upgrade key?

2. If I use the AU and it is successful, will the new Win7 Ultimate key be converted to an OEM version as well? The full-version retail key I have gives me the right to install this to 3 computers. I do not want to lose this right since I may use it for different computers in the future.

3. Is it better to go for AU or a clean install of Win7?

Since I just purchased the laptop, I have no personal data or programs installed so I do not have to worry about losing data. However Toshiba has certain software installed with the laptop. My understanding of a clean install is that everything will be wiped clean and then necessary software e.g. drivers, etc... need to be installed again. On the other hand, once I upgrade to Ultimate perhaps some of this software will becom... Read more

I am working on a Dell Studio 1745 running Win7 64 Home Premium. I need to run a piece of hardware (Tascam US122) that is incompatiable with the 64bit OS. My plan is to partition the drive and install Win 7 32bit on the new partition so I can run the mentioned hardware. I've done this on another machine (Dual Boot XP and Win 7) and ran into a problems with the bootloader. I learned to install older OS FIRST because of that. I'm wondering if installing Win7 32bit on a current Win7 64bit machine will cause a similar problem with bootloaders? I'd rather not have to mess with the bootloaders, but I really need to run this hardware. And, since this is a Dell, with touchscreen, and most IMPORTANTLY, a friend's computer I want to be 100% sure I'm not going to cause issues I can't fix.

So, again, will installing Win7 32bit on a new partition of a Win7 64bit machine cause problems with the bootloader, or any other foreseeable problems?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi,
I'm presently running Win7 Pro 32bit on an Intel Core2Duo 2.4Ghz 775 socket.

I've just purchased a i5 760 processor, an Intel H55 chipset Mobo, and 8GB of ram.

My copy of Win7 Pro 32bit was acquired through the college I was attending.
I have the installation disk and the license number.

When I reinstall Win7 Pro on my new set up, what do I need to do to make it a 64bit install?

I plan to use to the same installation disk and license number.

thanks
Mitch

Answer:upgrade from win7 pro 32bit to win7 pro 64bit with same licence

You will need the 64-bit DVD for a clean install

OEM SSD Win7 64 bit on C: I installed a new SSD with Win7 64bit to use as a test drive, but I can't boot to it. I can see the new SSD drive when I am in C:. It is labeled as E: I never gave it a drive letter. Does Win7 issue drive letter sutomatically? When I go into the BIOS at boot up I can't see it. I can boot to it if I remove the power to the C: so it can only boot to the new SSD.

Post a snapshot of a full screen Disk Management:

To open Disk Management, press Windows key+r, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter or click GO. Make it full screen.

See here: How to Use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums (says it's for Vista but also works with Win 7).

Windows 7 64 bit. Interacting with Explorer, often as simple as switching to Explorer window and changing focus on a filename. Explorer stops working, generates ID 1000 (see below) and then restarts itself.
Recently installed LibreOffice v 3.6.1.2 and 16-bit Java 6 update 30 (which works with LibreOffice).
I suppose you are going to tell me to uninstall the LO and Java. I'm really hoping for other troubleshooting or diagnostic options. The LO and java setup is for a project of some urgency.

I updated my windows and for some reason my second monitor stopped working right. It would take the same screen resolution as my laptop and I couldn't change it. I restarted the computer multiple times and it changed nothing. I uninstalled both the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M drivers then restarted so they would reinstall. It didn't fix anything. They both have errors, the Chipset says: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupt or missing.(Code 39) The NVIDIA says: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot laod the drivers required for this device (Code 31) I have tried having them work seperately and it does nothing. I have also installed both the drivers from their respective websites and it still did not fix the problem. Whenever I start the computer with the second monitor unplugged, and then plug it in later it doesn't seem to recognize it, but if I turn the computer on with it plugged in, it works but doesn't recognize it as a second monitor and only runs it like the laptop monitor.

If there is any extra information needed let me know, any and all help is appreciated.

I am trying to upgrade from Win7 32bit to Win7 64bit. A tech? instalked a new HDD for me and put Win7 64bit on it. I have another drive that has Win7 32bit on it that I would like to put Win7 64bit on. I have the new 64bit cd and can read directions, I just have no directions to tell me how to do it. The HDD I want to install on has been formatted Win7 32bit, however there is nothing on it of value now so I am ready to do this thing. I have read the directions on how to do a clean install but have no way to know if this would be classed as a clean install. I may not be the brightest bulb on the tree but I am very careful. It's been a few years since I've had the hood up on a computer but I do know my way around inside, even know what some of those things are in there. If there is some one out there that can set me on the right road to do this thing I will certainly appreciate it. Thanks DonS

Answer:upgrade from win7 32bit to Win7 64bit

Hello Don, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Is this going to be installed in another computer, or are you having both hard drives in your current computer to dual boot?

Do you have separate product key number for the second installation?

If it's going to be installed on a separate computer and you have a second key to activate with, then yeah you could do a clean install with it like in the tutorial below.

Clean Install Windows 7

Hope this helps,

Guys, help. I updated the drivers of my on board Realtek Lan Card via windows Update, but after that, it is not functional anymore. There were no lights when I plugged in the cable. Cable is working fine, when I test it on my laptop.

When i check on Device manager, it says, device is working properly. Network icon on the taskbar just shows lan connection with a red X. Have tried reformatting the pc and also used the latest driver from Realtek website.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Please help thanks!

Answer:On board Realtek Lan Card stops working after driver update on Win7

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

First, go into Device Manager and roll back your LAN adapter driver to its previous one.

Second, go to Windows Update and choose "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them"

Alternatively, you can always right-click any update you don't want and choose Hide.

Hi all

Can someone please help me, Iím having a problem that Iíve had for some time. My windows update does not update and I need to update my windows 64 bit so I can install the Zune software on my pc. Iíve done some googling on the problem and found that people have had the same problem and fixed it by starting a new user account and updating that way but when I start a new admin account and login to it I lose my current admin account (only managing to get it back by system restore.) BTW when I login to the other admin account the update did work n found 2 updates but I didnít update because I couldnít see my login to the other account.

I know there like 3 problems there but the main problem is the windows update thing.

Hi,

Just got into the flavour of windows 7 for a couple of days and I'm lovin' it.

Now, I installed Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus 64 bit on my system. Then I tried to use the Mathtype plugin 6.6a, but I cannot make it to work.

What I've done so far:

1. Installed MS Office 2010 Professional Plus 64bit successfully.
2. Installed Mathtype 6.6a successfully.
3. Copied the following files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\STARTUP
C:\Program Files\Math Type\MathPage\MathPage.wll
C:\Program Files\Math Type\Office Support\MathType Commands 6 For Word.dotm
C:\Program Files\Math Type\Office Support\WordCmds.dot
What is the error I am getting?

1.When I open MS Word, there is a macro warning (as usual) and when I "Enable Content", the following error screen pops up:

2. When I press "OK", I get the following error screen:

3. The "Help" button shows me the following windows7 help:

Is it possible to integrate the add-in to the MS Office 2010?

We at Design Science are working on 64-bit office compatibility for MathType. However, the current version is not recommended for use with Office 2010. More importantly, Microsoft doesn't even recommend installing 64-bit Office, even on 64-bit Windows, unless you really, really need it. See 64-bit editions of Office 2010.

IE 10 app not connecting to the internet I can connect when i go to the desktop with no problems at all but once i switch to the apps part of windows 8 and click on the internet explorer app it dosn't connect any help please.

thanks.

Answer:Windows 8 64bit IE 10 app not working

1. when you switch to apps - from desktop by pressing windows key on keyboard.
DO YOU have IE on your start menu
OR are you then right clicking on a blank area and clicking on all apps and then opening from there

2.When you say it does not connect - is that a message, as depending on how it has been used it only opens on a blank screen, but at the bottom you should see the IE symbol and the bar

Please see my screenshot - that bar is at the bottom of the page I have copied and pasted only the bar

Hello all,

I upgraded my system to Windows 7 32bit (from Vista) back when there was the student discount. And am regretting it now since i work in Photoshop all the time and need more RAM to suppose the work i do. So i'm looking to upgrade my system to the 64bit equivalent of what i already have (Home Premium).
I understand you can't use the Windows Anytime Upgrade for a 32bit to 64 bit upgrade. I also understand you need to do a clean install, which is no problem.

So what my question is, is what product should i buy exactly? Can i get away with an upgrade only? Or do i have to buy the full product?
I still have my Vista CD, so i could re-install the 64bit version of that, then buy the Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit upgrade?
Or is there a simpler way?

Cheers.

Answer:Win7 HP 32bit - Win7 HP 64bit

Welcome!

You can buy the Upgrade key because you have a previous OS already (Windows 7 32-bit).

You don't need to do anything with Vista, however. You can do a clean install with the upgrade copy. Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Hello!

I am currently using Windows 7 Home Basic 32bit. I acquired Windows 7 Professional 64bit through MSDNAA and was wondering about how the OS change will go.

What I'm worried about are my files. I currently have about 200gb worth of data on my drive and I have no extra harddrives to make backups.

Because I'm going from 32bit to 64bit, I read that a clean install is required for this type of change. My question is, will my files be placed in a "windows.old" folder? Or will I be required to buy an external drive and transfer them all in order to keep them?

Are there any other things that I must keep in mind?

Thank you in advance for any help and responses!

Answer:Win7 32bit to Win7 64bit

If you're doing a clean install then you will lose all data. I would highly reccomend an external HD to back up your files

My college (Arkansas State University) put the 32 bit windows 7 enterprise on the school website for anyone who wanted to install it. Well I went to install it and it said it couldn't go from a 64 bit to 32 bit but my roomate told me to pick the custom install option and then it worked. I currently have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installed on my computer. What I want to do is install Windows 7 Pro 32-bit without loosing any files or data. Is this possible? Why do I wanna do this...because I wanna down grade this PC's CPU to a Pentium 4 which doesn't run on a 64-bit OS. I own a copy of both Windows 7 64-bit and 32-bit. Any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Win7 Pro 64bit to Win7 32bit

You cannot downgrade from 64-bit OS to 32-bit. You have to back up data and clean-install 32-bit OS. Your programs have to be re-installed. Even standalone programs, if designed for 64-bit, have to be 32-bit.CoolGuy

Hi,

I am trying to fix a problem I am having with Windows Update in Vista which I came across when searching for a printer driver towards the end of last year - it appears WU had not run since the 28/7/2012.

Not sure I understand what happened on the 28/7 but from this point forward the WindowsUpdate log file reported an error 80070424 every time & never started again.

Prior to the issue the WindowsUpdate logging process was reporting scvhost.eve & wuaueng.dll on initialisation startup , however, after this date it reported 2 consecutive but different process/modules - first newdev.exe & wudriver.dll followed by newdev.exe & wuapi.dll.

On reviewing my services it appears that the both Windows Update & BITS service are missing from my services list - I can only assume these existed before the problem arose.

Yesterday I noticed an MS forum suggesting that SP1 was no longer supported & could cause problems with WU so I downloaded Vista SP2 which appeared to run sucessfully.

Unfortunately this has not resolved the problem and the only change I can see is that no WU logfile updates are being written today.

Having reviewed a number of threads I have seen suggestions to run sfc / scannow, MS FixIT etc aswell as the removal of qmgr.dat files some directories all with mixed results.

I have held off on doing any of this as yet pending some further recommendations.

Appreciate any suggestions and an extract of the WU log file is available as ... Read more

Sent earlier in error - sorry big fingers.........

I have been trying to resolve this issue for a few weeks now so would appreciate any help ?

Having reviewed previous threads on Windows Update errors I have now complete the following steps ;

1) Rolled back to Vista SP1 as SP2 did not resolve Windows Update issue

2) Run SFC /SCANNOW - CBS log reported clean apart from issue with tcpmon.ini which I read from other threads is non critical

3) Identified and created the missing BITS service (not started)

4) Checked the BITS dependant services (all identified as in place, set to manual and started)

5) Windows Update - Reset using "How to Reset & Re-register Windows Update in Windows 7 and Vista" (tutorial by Brink)

Command in batch file "Regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll" appears to be failing on my machine with the following error.

Error message - the module "qmgr.dll" was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Make sure that "qmgr.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file.

Windows Update at least now appears to find updates to download but once 'install updates' selected the program hangs & error 8008005 is still reported in the WindowsUpdate log.

I continued on as outlined.......

6) Confirmed folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader was empty - complete

However, my Browser Chrome Version 39.0.2171.71 m, is running extremely slowly which is usually a sign of it being hijacked. Please note that ComboFix is not designed to run on a Windows 8.1 unit, also if you are infected it can do more harm than good. If you are infected, please read below.
For general ComboFix details please see ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here

You can post to Am I Infected for a first opinion, or follow directly as below. There can be a wait of a few days if the Experts get very busy.

Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.

Answer:Windows 10 64bit can't working with my laptop

Hi, you only need a 64bit OS when you have more than 4Gb RAM - or if you plan to add more RAM of course.

Perhaps your thinking about 2.89Gb comes from part of your RAM being shared with a video card, or used by integrated graphics.

For example see

all you have to do to fix this ^^^^ is to install a program called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair I think its up to version 3.2 or 2.2 or sumthing so install that and in the subsection repairs, unchek all other boxes except repair windows update and let it do its thing, I searched for months to try and fix this to no avail n then came across this by accident and fixed it after one restart, I hope this saves a lot of ball ache and fruitless searchin I specialy made this account to post this fix. ATTACHED IS A SCREENSHOT OF THE PROGRAM I MENTIONED

Haven't found another thread covering this, so I apologize in advance if this question is elsewhere.

Last night I downloaded the 1/11 Windows Update patches for my 64 bit Home Premium OS. Left it alone overnight, and today I have no video.

Questions:
I'm running dual monitors (monitor + television) from the EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+. Could I have toasted the graphics card?

Power off and rebooting doesn't do anything. No beep. Can't get into safe mode or the BIOS. Is this a CMOS issue?

Won't run off boot disc either. What's going on? Any other routes to safe mode?

Thanks.
Brandon

Answer:No boot up and no video after 1/11 Windows Update 64bit

Hi & welcome,

First, How do you know it doesn't boot? Did you watch the HDD activity light & see if it goes throught the procees (Loads of flashing activity).

I would swap the graphics card for a known working one, then see if that boots & displays. If so, delete the hidden graphics card in device manager & then swap them back, to see what that has achieved.

If that achieves nothing (second card is good), I would then suggest the original card is fried.

If swapping the card also fails to? (Don't know why that would be).

Then I think you have toasted your motherboard but that seems un-believable & a little excessive for an update!

As a last thought, try swapping your power supply!

Download Windows Installer Cleanup. Run in an admin account. Right click and "Run as Administrator" Delete anything related to Java. Then try the install.

Hi guys,

i finally tried to install W7 SP1 after i ignored for such a long time.
Since even more programms and games need SP1 to be updated or installed, i decided to upadte my OS.

Trying to update SP1 in the past always resulted in errors like this one in the thread title.
I read many threads about this and fixed many issues by my self using the SURT and by copying missing or corrupt files in the Windows/Temp/CheckSUR directory.

I already solved a lot of the reported errors, but i cant get rid of the last 3.
After my research its all about Net.Frameworks 3.5 / KB2416471. Extracting the files from the MS update didnt work for me

Id would be great, if someone could help me

CheckSUR.log is attached.

Sorry for my bad english

Answer:Error 800F0818 cant update to Windows 7 Sp1 (64bit)

Any ideas ?

It looks like these two files are missing:

Package_for_KB2416471~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.mum
Package_for_KB2416471~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.cat

I cant find them in the Windows6.1-KB2416471-x64.msu. Can some upload them, please?

The error code has changed to 490 now ;-)

I absolutely despise the new version of AVG (aka AVG2011), and here's is yet another reason to remove it ASAP if you're running it on your PC... it appears that a recent update is causing all sorts of problems with people running 64bit versions of Vista and Windows 7. More info:
http://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/showthread.php/35202-AVG-Update-Killing-Windows-x64
http://forums.avg.com/us-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=132999

I strongly suggest that anyone running AVG2011 (or the older versions of AVG such as AVG9.0 or 8.5) remove them, and install one of the following free antivirus products:
Avast http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avast_Free_Edition_d1968.html
Avira AntiVir http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html (my personal favorite)

Answer:AVG update causing problems in 64bit Windows

I would also give a "thumb down" to the new AVG, I have had problems with it on XP, Vista and Windows7. dlb's post on alternative Antivirus is good, I'd recommend the Avast instead of AVG, haven't had any problems with Avast.

hi,
did a clean install of 64bit Pro edition on a custom built box with Intel w/station board & RAID1 mirror. All was ok. However, during operation, number of things are happening:
* cannot run Windows Update (can go to CPanel, once I click WU, the 'doughnut' keeps on spinning. Tried deleting relevant cached folders for WU to recreate but still the same issue...cannot access WU screen.
* the only way to exit from 'doughnut' is to end from taskmgr (where it says WU is running); ending task this way 'crashes' Explorer.
* as such there are applications that require to pre-install .net framework cannot proceed as it is relying on Windows Update. WU service is started; if somehow Windows Update menu opens up, it has a message 'reboot computer as WU has never been run on this pc with big red X'
* The Network icon shows 'X' in tray however it's connected to Internet & LAN
* Did register with genuine OEM key and Windows is successfully activated (evident from System Information page) however there's frequent message saying 'activate now' as you are not running genuine Windows, trial to expire.
Because have set this pc as file sharing, am dreading to re-install OS as some applications installed are business critical.
any suggestions would be really helpful.
thanx.
Eddie

Answer:64bit Windows Update with multiple errors

fixed it. The issue was related to Intel chipset:
* RAID1 mirror was on 2 x 1TB drives on a single partition - shrunk the volume by 100GB
* updated Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver
all good!

My update to 1607 went smoothly yesterday...deferred for quite while...had to reinstall DisplayLink driver as expected. Started testing various apps. Found out that the update deactivated FSX Gold + Acceleration which was running fine on 1511. I have run FSX for many years. Tried a repair from the DVD which failed every time with an InstallShield error o cannot complete error. I tried an uninstall...was able to unistall Acceleraton pack but FSX itself will not unistall. The process starts but will eventually fails after the initial stage with the InstallShield error . Accel pack will not install as it now thinks FSX is not installed. I am at a loss. I am a 40 year computer technology professional but this one has me stumped. I tried everything on the Internet but nothing has worked. Anyone seen this issue...any fixes?

Answer:Windows 10 Pro 64bit 1607 Update Deactivated FSX

Try installing as administrator in Compatibility Mode say win7 or 8.1?
