Preferred Solution: windows updates successful but update again

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: windows updates successful but update again

This has happened to others.
When you see the update, right click and then hide. You will not be bothered again.

MS Defender updates from Windows Update in settings fail, other Updates successful, but MS Defender from Control panel can update the same definition updates without problems (why, oh, why? can't I just select and copy from settings? )

Over this time, I need to fix insider builds, but have a problem:

SFC and Dism component store health fix report no problems

Any Ideas?

Answer:MS Defender updates from Windows Update fail, other Updates successful

I seen your pic - it seems like MS wants us out of preview - no advanced options either..
Looks like we get to keep 10240 - just forget a clean re-installation of it - Key is blocked

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32 bit.

Yesterday I tried installing the twelve important updates that had appeared for my computer. Nine installed and three got errors (KB2925418, KB2929733 & KB2929961, all failed with error code 80242016). I did the restart anyway and got the BSOD. The PC was recovered using the startup repair tool.

This morning WU still showed 12 updates to be done so I tried again. This time it installed 9 updates and ignored the other 3. The restart worked fine. WU now showed only three updates left. I tried installing KB2929733 & KB 2929961 again. No errors appeared until after the restart and I got the BSOD again. After several attempts the PC rebooted successfully using a previous restore point.

Now the installed updates shows a list of successful updates (and a long list of failed ones) but the successful ones still appear in the list to be installed. These are KB890830, KB2837594, KB2863818, KB2878225 & KB2878227).

SURT was run without errors as was sfc.

Any suggestions on how to get WU to match up its list of what needs to be installed with what is installed?

Answer:Windows Update Still Wants to Install Successful Updates

The SFC scan appears to have only partially completed - only 86 POQs were scanned, while the normal number is at least 120, for a 64-bit system.

This implies that there are registry problems - although CheckSUR found none.

Have you tried a System Restore back to before the system crashed?

I've been running windows 7 home premium 32 bit without problems for several years
I did a clean install of windows 7 home premium 64 bit from DVD
I activated it
SP1 (KB976932) appeared in the list of available updates so I ran Windows Update
When the updates were complete I checked the update history and SP1 (KB976932) was successful
However when I checked installed updates there was no mention of SP1 and the windows edition does not show SP1 either
There is no windows icon on the task bar to request the free upgrade to windows 10
I have repeated the clean install process 3 times with the same result. I also tried downloading SP1 from microsoft website but that got stuck in a boot loop
When I was running windows 7 32 bit the windows icon was available on the task bar to request the free upgrade to windows 10
I'm not that concerned about getting SP1 I just want to register for the free windows 10 upgrade
I'm running an Intel E6750 with 4gb ram on a gigabyte 965p-dq6 mobo. It's pretty old but I have a similar PC of the same vintage that ran win 7 64 bit without any problems before I upgraded it to windows 8 and I had no problems registering for the windows
10 upgrade on that PC
Any ideas?

SP1  (KB976932) appeared in the list of available updates and in the update history

Sorry to be creating a thread on this, but this is important because it involves Windows Update.

My Windows 10 PC was just about to restart and complete the install of the newest Windows 10 Update, but I accidentally cancelled the restart. I then tried to restart it by pressing the grey box in Windows Update that says "Restart now" but it gave me an error.

Finally, I went to the Start menu and I pressed "Restart and install updates" and it then restarted itself.

How can I be sure it installed the update successfully?

Thank you!

Hello, I've got a problem with my windows updates for a couple of days now (3-4 I believe)

2 Updates are always being successfully installed, yet the next time I shut down my computer it always installs the same updates again!
Another weird thing is those updates are from 2011 and 2012!

The Updates are both called:
- Sicherheitsupdate f?r Microsoft .NET Framework 4 unter Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 f?r x64-basierte Systeme (KB2656351)
- Update f?r Microsoft .NET Framework 4 unter Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 f?r x64-basierte Systeme (KB2600217)

I tried fixing it with that "windowsupdate.diagcab" and it did say it fixed a problem but obviously it didn't..

I hope someone can help me :/

I just completed my first Patch Tuesday update to my two PC's after upgrading to Windows 10 and all went well. I did notice that there was a Windows 10 cumulative update among the office updates. I guess Windows 10 will never be a finished product but I'm happy that nothing went wrong.

I'm glad your Windows 10 PC was fixed! but I still am not able to download apps on the Store. My Mail app is working again, but I have like 10 apps in the download list in the store that don't download, it just says "downloading, 0.0MB of 100MB" (for example). Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix this? Thank you!

I have Windows Media Center for XP (2005 version) installed on my computer. There is an update from Microsoft called 'Rollup 2' which stabilizes this program. I have downloaded the update, but the problem comes when I try to install it. I get the message: 'The Update to Media Center was not successful'.

My system: Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, OS Windows XP Home edition.

The Update to be installed is Hotfix for Windows XP (KB900325). When I attempt the installation Media Center opens with its dark blue screen and large font size. I then run the program and click the 'Accept' box. It then creates a Restore point. Next, as the restore point is completed, the line 'Hotfix For Windows XP (KB891593)appears on the screen. But it is followed almost immediately by the error message.

How can I install this program?

Answer:The Update to Windows Media Center (2005) was not successful! Why

Same problem, but my computer is a Toshiba Satellite A100 308, and the hotfix for rollup 2 is KB 895572...

I have tried this, Windows Update - Fix a Repeatedly Offered Update, and I have tried Microsoft Fix-It.

I am using Windows 7 Starter 32-bit.

Could anybody please give me some advice.

Last year I had a security update for Visual Studio 2005 Professional fail to install. I tried to find a solultion, but did not spend much time on it and just dropped it. A recent update for XP which is supposedly criticle (I think there two of them).

I am a little embarrassed : to not being able to find the solution to this problem, being a developer and an old computer hack.

The following are the exact updates:

Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
(I had a problem with this one too but was not as ready to solve it because I wasn't using this Db at the time)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB955706)
------
Security Update for Windows XP (KB959426)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB961373)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB963027)

I would like to at least get the security updates to work first as a prioriy. Especially, if they each have separate issues/solutions.

Let me know if I need to go to a solution online.

Hello:

I am having a very annoying issue where updates install successfully (verified in the update history), and then reappear for installation immediately after they are installed if you check for updates again. They also will show in the update history as having been installed multiple times if you try more than once (exact same KB#).

So far I have tried this:
CLFS transaction logs - Reset

I have tried the numerous suggestions clearing up the Software Distribution Folder and Catroot2.

I have run every MS fixit tool under the sun.

I have completely obliterated .NET from my machine, using all MS tools to remove, clean, repair, and reinstall each .NET package in proper order according to Technet.

I have used fixit tools to repair Windows Update, including properly stopping Cryptographic services, BITS, and WU services.

I have run CHKDSK and SFC.

I have used System restore.

I have tried to manually install updates in safe mode.

I have tried Windows repair.

I can hide the updates and they seem not to show again, but the moment more updates become available, I have to do it again. This means EVERY update that appears, I have to install, then check, then hide again.

I have a lot of stuff on here which would take a week or more to go through and redo if I have to reinstall Windows.

If I have left anything out here, it is likely I have tried it.

I only have a few patches of hair left that I have not yet pulled out.

Most of the MS boards have all the same suggestion... Read more

Hi all,

On more than 1 occassion I have been offered an update immediately after I had successfully installed it (as confirmed in update history). I would venture to say that in about 50% of the times the update is no longer offered a second time after I reboot(whether or not instructed to by Vista). However, that still leaves me with plenty of occassions where I have to install the same update 2 or 3 times to be sure "it took" and the fact that this happens at all lol

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Updates keep getting offered after successful installs

Hello Viviand,

Welcome to the Vista Forums.

Next time that happens, instead of downloading and installing the updates again, try clicking on the check for updates button on the left of WU. See if this updates WU or still finds that you need the updates.

This has been going on for what seems like a week or so now. Everytime I reboot it tells me I have 3 Windows Updates that need installing. After installing and rebooting it offers the same 3 updates every time. Can anyone help me out?

I ran this command fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\ in elevated command prompt and rebooted, but it didn't fix it.

I'm on Windows 7 x64
the updates are

1. Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, server 2008, server 2008 R2 for 64 (KB2656351)

2. Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, server 2008, server 2008 R2 for 64 (KB2600217)

3. Definition update for Windows Defender- KB915597 (Definition 1.139.0.0)

Thanks.

Answer:Win 7-repeated successful install of same updates

Hi yahar.

There is an older thread on this forum where a new member had similar problems and found a fix (at least for one of those)
You may want to check it out and try that solution. It seemed to fix the problem for him.

Update repeating with each shutdown

Otherwise, if you are able to confirm they have installed correctly then maybe the other suggestion posted there may be an option.

Hope that helps.

KB4020102 was updated successfully on 26/5/2017. I usually have metered wifi. Today I connected to ethernet. Same KB is trying again and again. Now it hangs. Please see pics below.

What to do now?

Answer:Successful updates retries and fails

Notes on this update (as with all) in News:
Cumulative Update KB4020102 Windows 10 v1703 Build 15063.332 - Windows 10 Forums

- no reference to a repetition, although certain updates (which have themselves been updated) are known to be repeated.

What should you do now?
One possibility might be to download it (link in the above) and manually install (begging the question as to why twice).

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... Before when you got the update Icon you click on it, update and everything is fine. Recently I get the same icon after the update that tells me the update was successful and lists what has been installed. I have to click on it and close it to make it go away until the next time.

I can't find anyway to prevent this"Successful Update Notification" icon from showing up after an update.

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

The error number seems to mean "Element not found."

So it might be appropriate to ask how you migrated the system to the SSD?

If the old drive has been removed so it can not conflict with the new one, and you moved the partitions over correctly, there should be some mention of the errors in either the Event Viewer, or the WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows partition. You can copy the log to the desktop to read it. Look for something that mentions error or fatal error.

You may be getting errors in the Event Viewer about the Windows Store, if it was related to the logon account.

I think I'm using the right terminology on that. It's the screen just before the screen where it says "windows xp" and has that little timer looking thing below the xp logo before getting to the log in screen.

Answer:Successful Update icon issue

never mind. I figured it out.

Tweaking com Windows repair tool was applied at a local service repair.
There is an irony to this since this tool has been referenced repeatedly in this forum. I gave up after multiple failed updates for this Oct.11/16 update and took the laptop to a service.
Basically the repair tool log listed that Windows Update, Windows Component Store were repaired. Windows Services and Windows Com unmarshalers were restored.
There are no errors in this Laptop Event Viewer now either and its a new Software Distribution Folder so history is gone.

The service tech downloaded this tweaking.com windows repair tool.zip and extracted it into the laptop downloads folder.
I will have to investigate if it is a portable app and able to be shifted to another location.

I'm having a few problems with my Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver and have been advised by my Laptop manufacturer (Acer) to install an updated driver.

I have a folder sitting on my Desktop called WLAN Broadcom 5.60.18.8 but I don't know how to go about installing the Driver from this.

I am aware that I should create a restore point before I start the process, and that the first part of the update action is;

Open Device Manager > Expand Network Adapters > Right click on Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter > From the drop-down menu > Select Update Driver Software... and now I'm lost!

Advice is needed to complete the process

Answer:Updating Drivers - What's the procedure for a successful update?

Hi there ... Well if it's an .exe file, I'd just run it. If you've downloaded a zip file containing the drivers, unzip its contents to a folder, open device manager, right click the device .., update drivers, select Install from a specific list or location (Advanced), select Don't search, click Have Disk on the following screen, and then browse to the folder where you extracted the Broadcom drivers and select the inf file.

Hello everyone

I update the BIOS of my laptop and something went wrong:( My laptop now not turn on the screen.

I went to see on the web about Cris Bios Recover. I created my floppy drive and I'm using a USB drive connected to the USB port on the right below.

When I click on FN + B laptop goes into recovery mode and is for 40 seconds to read the disk I wait 10 minutes turn off the laptop and nothing (still dead: (
I downloaded the bios.wph the site tohsiba for this notebook.

The laptop is a: Satellite A200-1BQ. Part Number: PSAECE-01V011PT

Please help me ... the laptop reads the floppy but then does nothing .. must be missing something ... have used the phlash.ini but does not ...
Thank you very much

Answer:Satellite A200-1BQ - BIOS update was not successful

Hi fear_angel,

Well, I think in this case you can do nothing and I would not try this BIOS recovery program. This is no official way and you could destroy more or the whole ROM module.

You should contact an authorized service provider for help. The technicians can try to reflash the ROM module. I?m sure they will help you as best as possible.

Good luck! :)

Hi

Sorry to said it but there is no much to do. You have to contact the ASP (authorized service provider) in your country for a help.
If you are a lucky man maybe the motherboard is not damage and the ROM module must be flashed only.

You will find also the Toshiba ASP in Israel.
Please check this Toshiba page and search for ASP in Middle East -> Israel

I've had an R400 for a while and have had ssue where it won't wake from sleep after shutting the lid for a few months. I decided to go ahead and update to BIOS 3.24/3.25 to see if it would help with my problem.I've installed plenty of BIOS updates before and never had an issue. This one seemed to go well but upon reboot the machine is bricked. No sounds, the only light I get is the battery light and the circle with a Z going through it.  The warranty expired 11-07-2011 but the Lenovo BIOS software just completely bricked my perfectly running machine. I have no contacted Lenovo yet because I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this issue. Any input will be helpful.

Answer:R400 Bricked after 'successful' BIOS update

I doubt that you'll get far with Lenovo with any type of claim concerning an out-of-warranty unit.

There are some BIOS recovery processes that involve a floppy drive, I remember reading about them but can't recall where. German ThinkPad forum, maybe, but it's been a while...

The last time I bricked a machine with a BIOS update (a T61) I just swapped the board and moved on.

Good luck.

Hi,

Today Windows Update unexpectedly downloaded 11 patches, mostly hotfixes. I'm still not sure why this happened as most of these patches were dated 2012/2013.
After installing them the laptop stayed on the "Preparing to configure your system..." screen for so long I thought it had frozen, but after an hour or so it rebooted and things seemed to be working normally.

On checking the Update History, it says "Updates were installed today at 21:11 (Failed), even though all of the patches are listed as "Successful" under Status. After checking again, something called Update for Windows is displaying as Failed, but I don't remember seeing this listed with the other 11 patches earlier.

Before rebooting I noticed the yellow Update icon was next to the Shut Down menu, and was still there after the reboot, but it dissappered a few minutes later while I was checking the Update History. I've run a check for updates and Windows seems to think I'm up to date - am I missing something important here?

Thanks,

Christina

Answer:Confusing Failed/Successful Status After Update

I don't think you are missing anything but I'm not a expert.

All I would do is reboot 3 or 4 times today and check for Windows Updates manually and see if you have any problems.

Your Windows Updates might be trying to work around/with McAfee.
McAfee is normally not friendly with Windows 7.

From your specs.

Hi all, thought I would share my experience with the dreaded KB2919355 update that seems (from trawling the internet for solutions over the last several days) to be a pretty common problem that people are experiencing.

My 32-bit laptop attempted to install the update several times since 18/04/14 but failed each time. The error codes were almost as numerous as the clumps of hair I pulled out in exasperation. (In fact, the codes I received, in more or less random order, were as follows: 80246007, 80070005, 800F0902, 80073712, 80080008.)

I then tried various combinations of the following in the command line, running as an admin:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restoreHealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

(And I guess it's best to do them in that order, although the mods might be able to clarify if that's not the case.)

The first command returned the following message:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

The second returned something similar. A check of the CBS and DISM log files showed that some system files were corrupted. The pertinent part of the DISM log file is below:

(p) CSI Payload Corrupt x86_microsoft-windows-tabletpc-inputpanel_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17031_none_a661cc9192f62cce\boxed-correct.avi

On first desktop login the action centre didn't respond until a few minutes later.
The audio also stopped working with some message about audio system not available, then it returned a few seconds later probably this;

After updating to this build, nonstop exceptions in the Spectrum.exe service may occur causing PCs to lose audio, disk I/O usage to become very high, and apps like Microsoft Edge to become unresponsive when doing certain actions. As a workaround to get out of this state, you can delete C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Spectrum\PersistedSpatialAnchors and reboot.

Yesterday, for reasons I won't go into (but feel free to ask if interested), I installed Patch Tuesday update KB3161608 (x64) via the downloaded MS standalone installer (.msu), instead of via Windows Update. The installation was successful. (A little more detail, in case it might have any relevance: After I first started the install it seemed stuck at the "Searching for Updates" stage. Clicking cancel would not make the dialog go away. So I restarted the pc, with the "Searching for Updates" message still active. Upon restart and retry, it moved past the "Searching for Updates" stage almost instantly, and the install went smoothly.)

But now I see that, apparently as a result of the installation, Windows created a new lengthy-name locked sub-folder of C. (See screenshots of folder and contained files.)

Is this normal? What is this folder for? Can I delete or move it?

Thanks.

Answer:Folder Created by Successful Standalone-Installer Update

Hi Rick,
Thats cause you downloaded via WSUS (business) servers, there are some fix's that utilise this option, NOT the normal day to day standard user servers.

I had a WinXp Pro crash yesterday evening. The computer did a system dump of some sort (not sure how it started doing that but it has lately)....and then the computer rebooted and hung on the page with DMI POOL update successful. SO, I cannot get past that screen. IT hangs there for hours. I cannot reboot in safe mode, as the F8 key doesn't work. I have tried the F12 and DEL keys as they are the only things working in boot. I have defaulted the BIOS. I have back up disks but this will do a complete system recovery wiping out my C Drive. I have some photos on there I never got to back up and would be very upset to lose.
Is there anyway I an retrieve the data before doing a system recovery? If I took out the hard drive and slaved it to my old system (that I am writing from now) would that work? To drag and drop it into this system, till I am able to recover the other one?
NEED HELP! desperate!. THANKS~!

Hi,

For an unknown reason (my guess is an update was automatically applied and automatically restarted), my computer rebooted overnight and in the morning was stuck in a failed boot loop.  When trying to boot I get the message:

"Preparing to configure windows"

"Do not turn off your computer"

Then after a few seconds the computer reboots and does the same thing.  Safe mode yields the same result.  Using the F8 option to restore last known good configuration doesn't change anything.  I can boot into the recovery console.

I have tried running SFC /SCANNOW in a command prompt in the recovery console and get the message:

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

Restarting of course doesn't change anything.  So it seems something happened to an unfinished update and is still pending.  I think if I can remove this pending update I might be able to boot normally, or at least run SFC and hopefully then boot
normally.

Does anyone know what I should try to remove this pending update that appears to be preventing a successful boot?

Thanks!

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

Just wanted to report that I just received the lastest 1-2018 Cumulative update KB4056892
and it installed without any issues, for reference it took just over 8 minutes and
there were some odd screens which I haven't seen before, one of which was
a blank screen using MS basic video graphics for about 2 minutes all you see is the spinning dots
with low res graphics .....At first I thought I had a problem but then it moved onto the more typical blue working on updates screen and the %.

Confirmed with winver I'm on version 16299.192

This is the first PC I have tried this update on which is from 2014 and upgraded from 7 to 10 just a week ago!
Next is the PC from 2009, which I also upgraded from 7 to 10 last week. I'll post an update tomorrow.
Aside comment, the number of updates on 10 is dizzying and annoying as well.
What I really DISlike intensely is that the updates download WITHOUT my permission even during
active hours! I have a very slow connection and it kills my ability to do anything on the internet except the update.
MS needs to change this for low speed connections soon. It's driving users away. There are still MANY users with glacially slow connections speeds and we simply can't deal with this kind of behavior .

Answer:Reporting successful install of 1-2018 Cumulative Update KB4056892

I think you'll be noticing this 'cos you've just upgraded. Things should then quieten down.

Otherwise you could upgrade to Pro where you have more control via Group Policy. The initial upgrade will be followed by another large update, then you get an update about once a month, with possible driver updates.

Or disable windows updates for a couple of weeks, then catch up...

Please see the News section for a thread per update per build.

Every 6 months, there's a new major build (where all system files are replaced). This is very unlike '7 (no SP1,2,3, hundreds of updates if you reinstall thankfully!) and
- advantage- applying new build can sometimes solve bugs in a corrupted system
- disadvantage- new build can introduce new bugs and incompatibilities
- advantage- reinstalling is usually - reinstall + 1 big update + 1 cumulative update.
- advantage- in place repair install is typically last major build + 1 big update + 1 cumulative update.

That's a very very rough guide.

I had a video issue today and while looking at the Intel MB site, noticed my BIOS was out of date. I downloaded the Express (exe) file and tried to update my BIOS from 0123 to 0133, one year date apart. Problem is, Intel BIOS update program shows successful... but when I view sys info it still reports old version. Yes, rebooted to BIOS and same-o, same-o. It lies to me.

Question: Do I have to break my RAID mirror to do a BIOS update? That's the only thing I can think of that might be the issue.

Answer:Intel BIOS update shows successful, but sys info reports no change

Is there an actual reason you want to update the BIOS. If your BIOS is working without any problems just leave it alone. You can completely brick your motherboard by messing around with the BIOS. Just because a later version maybe available doesn't mean you should update it.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

Hi,
I need to create a batch file that install a 3rd party camera driver for PCI device. When I install the driver in device through device manager, I can do it successfully. However, when I try to the same, I get the message 'devcon failed' with no further
elaboration. I provided following commands but none of them works.
devcon install "C:\Program Files (x86)\Molecular Imaging\MI\Application\Drivers\pixci_win7x64\epixxcw6.inf"  "PCI\VEN_165A&DEV_EB01&CC_FF00"
or after installing through device manager
devcon update "C:\Program Files (x86)\Molecular Imaging\MI\Application\Drivers\pixci_win7x64\epixxcw6.inf"  "PCI\VEN_165A&DEV_EB01&CC_FF00"
or
devcon remove  "PCI\VEN_165A&DEV_EB01&CC_FF00"
However 'devcon find "PCI\VEN_165A&DEV_EB01&CC_FF00" ' runs fine and return the message that 'one matching device found'.

Similarly  'devcon dp_add "C:\Program Files (x86)\MolecularImaging\MI\Application\Drivers\pixci_win7x64\epixxcw6.inf" ' runs fine and the message I get in return is: c:\windows\system32\inf\oem151.inf addd.
After that I also tried install/update with   'c:\windows\system32\inf\oem151.inf' driver but it still fails.
Is there any way, I could see the elaborated message about failure or I could know whats wrong with my execution of devcon.

Thanks,
Divya

Answer:devcon install/update/remove fails even though installation through device manager is successful

Hi,
I am afraid there seems to be no such function available for DevCon.exe to display the error messages here. In fact, The parameters in a DevCon command must appear in the order shown in the syntax. If parameters are not in order, DevCon ignores them, but
does not display a syntax error. Instead, it processes the command with the remaining parameters.

We can use the following commands  in a Command Prompt window:
DevCon help or DevCon help command.
To get the helpful information regarding the command syntax.
More information, please see:
Device Console (DevCon.exe) Commands

I'm currently on holiday and am connected through an expensive 3G modem plan. Whenever I try to connect, Windows update starts to download files. Every now and then I need to update MSE virus defs but Windows update downloads files GRR! What do I do about this pest? I just disabled the windows update service which obviously prevented me from downloading MSE defs

Answer:How to stop Windows update from downloading updates when I update MSE

Have you tried setting Windows Update to not Download updates?
You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.
For MSE definitions, open MSE and update from there.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.
1 machine = 1 license.

What version of Windows are you running? You posted in the XP Forum, but your profile says Windows 7?
What part is ugly? This shouldn't be an issue with Windows 7. You can choose to not download the update in Windows Update and put a check in Do Not Remind Me of this Update.

WU tells me there's 33 optional updates available, when I click and the window to select those and install them appears I can't see any of them. =/ Check the attachment to see what I'm talking about. Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

Answer:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

They seem to download okay and then go through the process of installing.
But then I keep getting a notice that nothing was installed because of an error.
Tried to follow the instructions in Microsoft Troubleshooter and even tried using the "Fix It Tool' but nothing helps.
3 days ago I downloaded Firefox Browser and Microsoft Essentials.....could they be part of the problem?
I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

HI,
My wifes win7 pc stated giving us SMART warnings that the hdd was in the process of failings. We immediately began a Windows BU making a complete system image onto an external USB HD. The drive was larger than the "C" drive we were backing up. The C drive had about 350GB of space used on it and it took over 30 hours to do the BU but Windows said that the BU was successfully completed. The PC only has USB 2 so the BU was not going to be fast but I was surprised at the time and perhaps that points to a failing drive in itself?

I have been very surprised by two things but it might be normal and I'm looking for advice/opinions.

First, the external "F" drive now has over 620 GB of space used on it which is almost double the usage of the C drive that was backed up to it. Is this possible or normal?

Secondly, when I click on the F drive to see what it contains it shows a folder called "Name of PC", also a folder named Windows Image BU and finally a MediaID .bin file. With the sole exception of the .bin file the folders do not indicate any data amount in GB. If I right click on them and go to Properties they both say "0" bytes. Is this normal or is there an issue here?

Assuming nothing is amiss here am I correct that I have everything I need to successfully remove the failing C drive, put in a new one, boot off the "F" drive using Windows Image BU and copy all the programs and data from the "F" drive onto the n... Read more

I'd be EXTREMELY wary of assuming nothing is amiss, given what you describe and given that you apparently have little experience with Windows Backup. It's a bit of a strange bird well known for confusing the inexperienced.

It's hard to say what you have backed up. Maybe just C. Maybe C and some other partitions. Maybe nothing you can successfully get at or recover.

What would I do?

I'd conduct myself as if I could NOT recover Windows until proven otherwise. Know what you would do if that turns out to be true.

I'd backup my DATA as opposed to Windows to a known good destination using nothing more complicated than a mouse and keyboard. Plain old copy, ignoring Windows entirely.

Then I'd attempt to make some sort of headway with an imaging application that is more user-friendly.

Unless of course you can get some expert help in here on Windows Backup and Restore, which might happen.

I don't think it's going to allow you to "boot off the F drive". That isn't how backup applications typically work. Nor will you get very far with a "copy all the programs and data" from F to the new... Read more

hi HussinBhy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

With Windows 8 there was a certain service that has to be disabled "Nalperion Service" then proceed with the updates manually by 4 or by 5 updates only

If Windows 7, You just have to make sure your Antivirus is not blocking anything by disabling them temporarily
and most of all Try installing it by 4 or by 5 updates only,  as it may be overlapping some updates if you will install everything at same time.

Hi

I have recently been having problems with windows update and many other things. Basically it won't check for updates. When you click to check for updates, the bar starts but stays stuck searching. I then also notices microsoft security essentials does the same when u try and update. AVG free failed to install and I tried installing google chrome because I hate explorer and it also failed due to windows installer error. I tried manually installing service pack 2 from windows and it also failed. Nothing windows based will update.

I first noticed all this when I moved in with my girlfriend and started using her laptop. It is a decent laptop and the first thing I noticed it was a bit sluggish and I checked the CPU usage and one thing was hogging 70% all the time. It was windows error reporting or something similar which I disabled through systems, but nothing changed. Thats when I tried to update windows and it had 1 important update and 2 optional which I did. I remember one completed and 2 failed I think and after I restarted the computer the updater has not been working at all.

I got tune up utilities but it did not change anything after cleaning up various things. I also got rid one one malware thing from a free month trial with malwarebytes I think.

I have seen people talking about command prompts and cleaning registries but I cant get them to work properly.

I do not get errors report codes which is also a problem because its always frozen on checking for ... Read more

BEFORE doing anything drastic such as resetting WU, try this -

Windows Update Settings - Change

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

The last time windows update found anything new to download was 4 weeks ago on Sept.9.I manually update at least three times a week. When I try to update it goes through the normal 30 second or so search routine but all I ever get is No New Important Updates Are Available For Your Computer statement.
I have gone to hidden updates and was able to download an update that was about 2 months old with no problem.I have Malwarebytes and VIPRE security so I normally have Windows Defender turned off,but on two seperate ocaisions I have turned Windows Defender back on and Windows Update searched and found updates and I had no problem downloading and installing them.It even found the update for the newer Windows Update that I agreed to and insalled.
My computer is a VISTA Ultimate 64xbit and is kept up to date as much as possible.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I have a list of updates ready to be installed and I have tried but in the end it just stalls and doesn't do anything, so I'm here to ask what way around it is there to install them?

Turn off the updates (via the registry) and then on?

As of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.

Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

But now, it seems, that's the only update MS says is available to me.

Using some good advice from an earlier msg, I ran Belarc's analysis routine. Among other things, it reported nearly 50 critical updates it could not verify had been installed.

Am I in trouble or aren't I?

What should I do?

Answer:Windows Update reports NO updates?!

Your computer specifications tell me that SP2 is installed and you said in your last post = when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

Question is was SP2 fully installed?

The other thing that makes me wonder is the thing about the other 50 or so updates that do not show installed in Belarc. I would like you to download this update for Belarc and install it and rerun it.

Hi,
I am attempting to update a new install of Windows Vista that is currently at SP1.
Initially, attempts to run the update failed with error code 80080005, but I got by that with the help of a post on this forum. The advice there was to change the settings to never update, exit Update, re-enter it and and set it back to update automatically. That worked fine.
Now, however, when I open Windows Update and click on Check for updates, the screen flashes immediately and no update are found. I don't even think it's checking.
Any help with this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Answer:Windows update not checking for updates

I should have mentioned that both "Most recent check for updates" and "Updates were installed" are both set to "Never".

Hi. I'm new here and see a forum about windows updates not being installed. I have the same problem but that thread didn't help me at all to fix the problem.

I have tried to install Windows Installer but will get this message when I try to install it.. " Not enough storage is available to process this command."

I've tried these commands and the first one

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll says The module failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.

There are 3 that will not update and haven't for a week. Yes I've been trying and searching that long!!!
#1 Security Update for Microsoft Office Visio Viewer 2007 (KB973709)
Error Code : 646

#2 Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB972581)
Error Code: 646

and

#3 Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB974234)
Error Code: 646

Any help will be appreciated and much thanks in advance!

Answer:Windows Update will not install updates!

Hi,

You mention:

" Not enough storage is available to process this command."

Have you actualy checked there is enough space on the drive, I am unsure how much space is needed, but this could be an issue.

Also make sure you dont have any external drives connected when running the update.

Does MS Update give you any KB numbers or error codes?

Thanks,
Danny

Hello Everyone:
I am unable to receive Windows updates. Even manual updates won't work. This seems to have started when I upgrade my Hard Drive to a Momentus xt 750GB (Hybrid Drive)

I combed the network and try all solution suggested. I reverted to drive images made at various time. No luck.

The first message when I click is Windows Update Checjk for update for your computer. Then Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer,

It doesn't appear to be a virus: Fresh installs won't clear the and my Norton has always been up to date. I even run Windows Malicious detector. Zero issues.

What I come to think of is a compatibility issue: 512b then, 4kb now? I know there has been a patch and I use routinely external HD of High capacity.

I would appreciate some help if you can. Again, I don't think it is a virus.

Many thanks.
