Help with one specific security update

Question: Help with one specific security update

Hi I am running windows 7 ultimate x64 and have had an issue with moving my mouse when watching flash content the bits drop causing a slow down of the video. After making sure all my drivers were up dated and everything on the computer was in good order by running diagnostics test I found that this is a problem with windows and internet explorer. After further review I did find a fix that Windows put out MS13-047: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer put out on June 11, 2013, so I tried to download the version for my OS and it said this is the wrong version. I proceeded to try all of them just in hopes of getting lucky and they all said the same thing. I know I do not have this update because I recently formatted my hard drive and their is only like 30 updates in there. Does anyone know if maybe I doing something wrong and if so could you point me the download I need to get this update. Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: Help with one specific security update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been regularly receiving an update titled "Hewlett-Packard - Imaging - Null Print - HP Deskjet 3510 series" that is for my printer. After attempting the update it always displays Error 0x8024200b. I do not need this update, and would like it to disappear forever, but can't for the life of me figure out how to control or hide individual updates. Anyone cracked this code? I am using the first full-version of Windows 10 (doesn't have a preview number) and would really appreciate the help!

Hi,

I was wondering what your recommendations are regarding my specific needs for a security solution.

My current setup is Avira AntiVir Personal for my real-time and on-demand virus and spyware protection. Windows' default firewall and my Linksys router's firewall.

I did not have any threats for more than one year now but I'm growing tired of Avira. I like its options and its user interface but it can get kind of sluggish at times. Sometimes, I would have to update manually because it won't connect to the update server.

I have read that a combination of the three is the most popular here in SevenForums.
Microsoft Security Essentials
MalwareBytes
Windows Firewall/Hardware Firewall
I have a couple of inquiries regarding this setup before trying it. I would also like to hear recommendations that would suite me better in certain situations.

My Questions

Does Microsoft Security Essentials work real-time in the background?
Does Microsoft Security Essentials work as a anti-spyware software as well? (Windows 7 requires Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware)
Does Microsoft Security Essentials allow exclusions for real-time scanning and on-demand scanning? Is it limited to folders or files?
Basically those are all my inquiries. I'd be glad if you can answer them. Thanks!

Edit - Solved

Hi Guys,
With the new Second Edition of Security Update Guide, it is difficult to follow all updates on all OS's. All KB articles are listed on all Servers version.
Before, with the Microsoft Security Bulletin, it was possible to properly approve required patches on all versions of OS's on (WSUS 3.0 SP2) on a single click. But now each KB should be approved one-by-one.
Do you have a remedy to this?

Kavi

Hi Guys,
really wasnt sure where to post it, so i have posted it here and in storage.

Ive got some laptops at work, and i want to stop people from using unauthorised USB sticks. I do NOT want to restrict USB sticks completely, as it not only makes my job harder but also negates our emergency file-transfer system if our wireless goes down.

So Im wondering if there is a method or some software that would have the laptops only accept two or three specific USB sticks (via device ID, or a certificate file, some sort of encyption even)?

The laptops are all running Windows XP SP2

Hi,

I can't download specific file on one of my computers, whether on others everything is fine.
Same WiFi point, same ISP.

When I download this ZIP file its immediately corrupted (small file size) and I can't open it.
I have disabled the antivirus, I have tried with Chrome and IE, but to no avail.

It began 3 days ago, till then I could download it normally.
Something seems to prevent me from downloading it on this specific computer, it appears that the OS (windows 7) is doing this.
Can anyone help?

Answer:I can't download specific ZIP file on one computer, security problem?

This seems like an odd problem. I've never experienced something like this. Can you point us to the zip file in question?

I have automatic updates enabled but I have one update that each time I run automatic updates it applies and then I have to go in behind it and run a different install to "backlevel" it. I don't want to turn off Automatic Updates. I just want to deny a single update from ever applying.

FYI its a Video driver that when I run the original video driver I get the right screen resolutions and when this new driver gets deployed to the machine it kills the resolution and I can't get to my LCD native resolution.

Answer:Anyway to deny a specific update?

This explains how to do it :- http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/43154-automatic-updates.html

I have installed a Lucent Modem and downloaded a driver for it. THe modem works fine, but the MS automatic update has downloaded an updtae for the software and somehow, when I try to install, it says the update failed. The failure is OK with me, but the download keeps downloading and trying to install. Is there a way to block this particular update and still have the automatic update feature active. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Specific MS automatic Update Removal

First off, I recommend you NEVER update drivers from Microsoft Update! They make too many mistakes with drivers, and I've personally rendered two machines inert by letting them update drivers. I've never seen drivers appear in the critical updates, so you must have selected this one manually.

I believe with the new Windows Update you can hide specific updates so they won't be displayed.

It's now clear the driver has corrupted, and I try to boot up at Cmd. prompt only, and win 7 just won't let me over write it. So I'm hoping for a SP that can take care of this. Any suggestion?

Answer:Is there a specific SP to download if I want to update my TCP/IP driver on Win 7?

There is only one service pack for Windows 7. There are multiple versions that go with the CPU version (32bit or 64 bit). One of the bottom two, one is 32 one is 64. These are the full files, no need to download anything else during the install.

Every once in a while I will read that a update may cause problems to your computer and to remove it.

Recently update KB3133977 was reported that it was crashing certain mother boards.

Now for my problem/question.

I'm using windows 7. I go to my windows update, installed updates and wondering if I can search for a specific update. Surely there should be a way to search instead of having to scroll through all 335 updates.

I noticed the search box in the upper right corner and thought that would be the answer. So I tested it out by searching for an update I knew was listed but it did not find the update even though it was an installed update, so that wasn't the answer.

Tell me, if you are looking for a specific update, how do you guys find it? Is there a way to search or an easier way than having to scroll through your entire list of updates?

Thanks for any feedback

Answer:Finding a specific Windows 7 Update

Open up Windows 7 Updates.
Lower left corner tick on Installed Updates.
Upper Right corner (Search Installed Updates)
Type in or copy and pasted the KB number. (KB3133977)

It should either show the KB or state (No items match your search)

That method has always worked for me.

This can be ascertained by visiting the Windows Update website.

Have you tried manually downloading and installing any of these updates that you believe are not installed?

I bet others have this too. Windows 8 continues to ask me over and over each update session to update to Bing Desktop. I don't want it, never will. Seems in XP you tell a specific update to leave you alone if you never wanted to see it. Have we lost that in Windows 8?

Thanks! Jack ":-D

Hello Jack,

You could use the method in the tutorial below to hide the "Bing Desktop" update to no longer see it available in Windows Update until a new version is released. You can then hide the new one as well if you like.

Hi, I just updated my laptop to Windows 10 and I'm having an issue with the driver for my fingerprint reader. Windows 10 keeps installing the latest driver software for it rather then the version that I manually installed. The problem with the newest driver is that it disables finger print sign in and windows hello. Does anyone know how I can disable driver updates for just my integrated finger print reader?

I don't want it, I am happy with the default windows one, I am able to edit the bass and stuff with the default one, what the **** is wrong with Microsoft? DO I HAVE TO WASTE MY BANDWIDTH DOWNLOADING IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN OR WHAT?

Why does it feel like a downgrade (except in game performance) just in general when I use windows 10? Also why do they keep turning on telemetry and the ****ing app stuff, and turning off the metered connection in a virulent manner thinking I won't notice it after a while? Am I being ****ed with? Does Microsoft really think it will succeed in forcing this down my throat?

This is officially the first version of Windows that I felt like hanging myself to death after using.

Every time I run the Intel Driver Update Utility it tells me I need to go to HP to make sure my graphics card is up to date as it is not a generic Intel driver. After applying the Creators update on Monday my Action Center for my main user isn't working, yet for the other account I have (that I never use) it is working.

The Action Center pops out as it should, and the buttons at the bottom work as they should. Just no notifications are displayed. What's more infuriating is that the Toast Notifications have also stopped working. Which for emails and VOIP calls is a real pita.

If I check under Settings > System > Notifications & actions, under Get notifications from these senders, I have the message "No senders have provided notifications yet."

I must have spent over 12 hours looking at this now, and have tried nearly every "fix" for the same or similar issues I can find.
I know "could" create a new user, and migrate everything over. But honestly, to get everything setup as it is now isn't really a viable option, when this could happen again.

Has anyone had the same or similar issue?

Hello!

I am fairly new to Access 2010, but can usually find answers to most of my questions. I have hit a wall here, though:

I have a combo box in a form that finds a specific record within a query. This query then fills in all the text boxes within the form, which can then be printed from an identical report.

There is one specific record that when selected from the combo box seems to bypass all the IF statements in my code. I have 10 or so records that have IF statements such that if the carton number = "blah", then label123 will be visible etc. All of the products update the form correctly except for this one.

However, even if the form does not look as it should, if my "print_record" button is clicked, the report with the same underlying coding shows up correctly. Similarly, if the form is unloaded on this "rebel" record, when reopened it is formatted correctly as well. Unless I choose another record from the combo box, and then choose the "bad" record again.

The only thing I can think of that is different about this record, is that the field entry in the IF statement necessary for this record includes an asterisk, i.e. 123-4567*. Also, the product name for this record includes quotations, i.e. Brand "Identifier" Type. Though this product name is not used anwhere in the VBA code.

Please help!

Answer:Solved: Specific record selected from combobox won't update form

Today, my roommate apparently used my laptop without my knowledge, trying to "make my wireless network more secure" (or so he says.) In the process,he completely destroyed said network (so much for making it more secure) and I ended up not being able to use it at all.

After a call to tech support at my ISP, I was able to get it up and running again. I can access my email, use my P2P program, and access every website I've tried, except for one specific site. When I try to access that particular one, I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error page, and when I try to investigate further by clicking the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, what comes up is "[This website] is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web" (HTTP)" with this computer."

I have never seen this error message before, and I was able to access this particular website with absolutely no problems, right up until this afternoon when my roommate fooled with my wireless connection. And, as I said, I can access every other website I want, just not this one. Could it be simply a matter of the server being busy/unavailable, or could there still be something screwy with my wireless network?

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I need to find a solution to filter and find specific updates in the Microsoft Update catalog.

E.g. all Windows 8 or Windows 2012 that have been released after March 2017.

How would this be possible?
e.g. searching for Windows 8.0 2017 or "Windows 8.0 2017" won't give me only updates for Windows 8.0 and not limited to these released in x/x/2017.
If not, where can I leave feedback that filtering options for the search in Windows Update Catalog may get implemented?

Microsoft is delivering a Windows software update designed to quash once and for all the difficulty of disabling Autorun, a feature that allows the spread of malware through CDs, USB, and other removable media.
The update fixes an unspecified issue that prevents the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry key from working as expected, Microsoft says. It comes a month after the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team called out Redmond for offering instructions on disabling Autorun that were "not fully effective."
Autorun's convenience has long been offset by the risk it poses. That's been a given since at least 2005 with the advent of the Sony rootkit fiasco, which in large part was enabled by the ability of music CDs to silently install anti-copying software on end users' machines.
In the wake of Conficker, a worm that's infected more than 10 million machines in the past three months, the stakes have never been higher. Among the vectors it uses to spread, Conficker (which also goes by the name Downadup) makes use of USB flash drives and mapped networked drives to propagate to new machines.
This week's update is the same fix that Microsoft made available here last May, so users who have already installed it (and then carried out the instructions that follow) should be safe.
Ironically, Microsoft describes the fix as a "non-security update," and it offers this explanation: "In this case, we are communicating the availability of an update that affects your ability to ... Read more

A specific windows update is causing all network drives to become hidden/lost from laptop - Both Win 10 and Win 7.

I am trying to find which Windows Update that causes my local WORKGROUP network unavailable from the laptops for Win 7 and Win 10.  I can connect to the internet wired and w/ wifi. Just can't see or connect to my network anymore.
All of the previously mapped devises and hard drives are gone and rebooting, resetting both laptops and modems, reinstalling drivers etc does not work.

The other devices on the network can see and some can connect to the laptops...One device says "connection refused".
This has occurred after letting Windows update to latest on both my Win 7 and Win 10 laptops.

I was able to rollback one of the Windows 10 updates (the one that completely changes the right mouse click over start button menu items and does not want u to use the old control panel for some reason) by stumbling upon a setting that asks if this version
of Win 10 is causing apps not to work etc and allows you to revert to last version...

I am assuming the same is happening w/ Win 7 but am unable to go to previous restore point and would like to just uninstall the specific update that is causing the same issue on Win 7 laptops.

Also, does Win 10 not let u pick and choose which updates to install like Win 7 updater?
And where can I find what version/release # of Win 10 ?

I have stopped Win 10 from updating due to this issue. See link:

Also, does Win 10 not let u pick and choose which updates to install like Win 7 updater?
And where can I find what version/release # of Win 10 ?

I have stopped Win 10 from updating due to this issue. See link:

Hi.
Thank you for all your support and security updates for my two Surface RTs.
They?re great and I don?t want to see them go.  A quick aside? It would be nice for my two Surface RTs and me, if Microsoft had a change of heart and decided to port Windows 10 RT with Office RT for Surface RT and get a few
more years support.  Anyway.
Today one of my Surface RT 8.1 provided the option on shut down, to update and restart, which I did.
It said it was installing 4 updates.  When rebooted, I went to view update history and found two failed updates and three successful ones for a total of five.
The first one in the list that failed is this one here below.

Then to get more information, I clicked the link shown there for 4048958 to learn more.
That took me to the Microsoft Security Update Guide, where I searched for 4048958 and was provide two links for RT 8.1.
Both links, one for IE11 and one for RT 8.1, go to the KB 4048958 article, which says to get more information, go to the Security Update Guide, which of course takes one back to the KB.
Not very informative loop I guess.
The second update that is on the list above showing as failed, is the one for Adobe to prevent remote code execution.
When I am in Windows Update and double-click the failed entry for Adobe, and then click the link for more information, it takes me to a URL that does not show a KB number and provides a link for more i... Read more

For some time I have been unable to send email to one specific domain. If I send a very brief message (literally a few words) the email will go through: if there is an attachment or more than just a few words in the message body I receive a delivery failure notification. I have checked with my ISP (BT connect) and the ISP of the recipient and there is no evidence that the problem is due to filtering, blacklisting etc.

I have no problem sending emails (with or without attachments) to any other domain.

My pc runs Win98SE and Outlook 2000.

I signed up for a hotmail account and was able to send an email with a large attachment to the affected domain using that. I concluded the problem was my ISP, but before changing to another I ran one more test.

I sent a large email to the affected domain using my Win XP Pro laptop, also with Outlook 2000. It arrived!

This suggests the problem is specific to my PC setup. The problem started some time ago (maybe a year or so) - before that I was able to send emails to the domain from the PC.

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions about what could be causing this problem on the specific pc.

Hello all!

So I work tech support at my company and recently had one of our secretaries run into a virus. It was an email containing a fake resume in .doc format that once opened, attempted to direct the computer to download a trojan. AVG detected it right off the bat and quarantined it. I then ran a full system scan with AVG, Malwarebytes, and Spybot and everything came back clean.  I had assumed AVG along with Word being macro-disabled by default kept anything from actually happening.

However, at the time of the download she was running our company bookkeeping software (eClub for those interested) and it crashed once she tried to use it again. I check it out and see that the .exe to run eClub had been removed from the eClub folder (let's call it eclub.exe). Weird! So I go ahead and completely uninstall the program and reinstall, only to find eclub.exe was not reinstalled with it. I copy eclub.exe from another computer and try to paste it into the folder, and I'm told I don't have permission to do so. Then things get weird:

1. I uninstalled eClub completely again, removed the eClub folder and every possible saved setting for it.
2. I created a blank eClub folder (ex. C:\Program Files\eClub)
3. I can put anything I want into this folder, including .exes, EXCEPT for eclub.exe, getting the insufficient permission error.
4. I can put eclub.exe in subfolders of C:\Program Files\eClub without a problem

I checked all my permission levels and have fu... Read more

I recently moved in with my aunt, and I had this same problem last summer when I visited. Now that I live here, its a much bigger issue :/

my laptop, which connects fine to all other wireless networks, has trouble on this one. It can browse the web all day, but the second a large file begins to transfer (video, a file download, etc.) it will drop the connection randomly, usually rather quickly. The computer does not need to be restarted to reconnect, it often reconnects on its own near-immediately, though sometimes I have to go to the system tray and reconnect manually.

I thought it was too far from the router, but my tower in the same room connects flawlessly, and going in to the same room as the router doesn't help. This same laptop has been fine on every other network, and every other computer is fine on this network. I've web crawled off and on about this for months, but no one's problem is limited to one computer/network combination.

If the solution is in a setting on this laptop, that would be awesome - the network is used for my aunts business and I'm really hesitant about changing any settings, and since it works for all other devices theoretically the router settings should be something I can adapt this device to as well. crossing my fingers, thanks guys!

Hello Everyone,
What I want to accomplish is to run the program "InstallShield" only with a specified user.
So Basically DENY TO EVERYONE (admins, users, ... ) and ALLOW to the specified user.
I've tryied to create a Deny rule to everyone and an allow to specified user rule but isn't working.
Pheraps it checks the deny rule first and if it's true it stop checking.
Is there a way to allow only my SA user to be able to run Installshield and to deny access to the app to everyone else?

I have an issue with one specific website on my home computer. One or two pages will usually open then I get a "Website not available" msg on everything I do after that even logging out. Sometimes after multiple tries the next page will open. I did not have this problem on my computer until a month or so ago. Before that it worked fine. I do not have this problem on any other computer. I can also access the site with my Iphone without any problems. I have tried Internet Explorer, Goggle Chrome, and Fire Fox and still have the same issue. I have deleted the Cache, Cookies and turned off the antivirus software (McFee All Access). Nothing seems to help. I am convinced it must be some setting on my computer that was changed but do not know enough about computers to go beyond what I have mentioned. BTW, I searched for a similar issue but could not find one. Any help will certainty be appreciated. My computer info follows, please let me know if addition information on the issue is needed.

I manage a school network and would like advice on an issue with offline files.
For reasons of access to teaching specific users on specific computers need to have their files stored on their local machine.
Other users who log into the machine do not need to store their files (I don't want them to).
I also don't want the specific users to store offline files on other local machines.
Is this possible using active directory and group policy ?
How would I go about it?

You can redirect specific users My Docs folder to a network share. Then the files will not be stored on the local machine, and you can also include that network share in your daily backup routines. As for the other users, just leave their My Docs folder set to the default path, and their files will be stored on the local machine.

okay, this is a weird problem. I can use my internet just fine except for two specific web-sites (that I know of) that crash when I try to access them. those two websites are: What.cd and utorrent.com. when I type them into the search bar, I get this:

This webpage is not available
Google Chrome could not load the webpage because what.cd took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.

I know it's not the website because other people I know can access them just fine.

but there is an even stranger problem. When I do a google search in the URL bar, usually it works fine. but when I include the words "torrent" or "what" in the search, the browser crashes the same way. I can search for anything else and it works fine. But if one of those two words "torrent", or "what" is included, it crashes. what. the. hell.

For the past 2 months I have been having a problem viewing a specific website (Real Clear Politics). This problem occurs with IE, Mozilla, and Google Chrome, from three different ISPs (Comcast, Wide Open West, Keyon Communications). After contacting the webmaster for the website they were baffled and recommended a workaround of eliminating the "www." at the beginning of the address. This solution has allowed me to view the website though it does cause annoyance and links directing to deeper within the site are broken when clicking on them and the "www." must be removed to access them.

Today while exasperated I came upon a possible cause and solution of flushing the dns cache

However when I tried to perform the operation ipconfig /flushdns I received the message
"The requested operation requires elevation."

Any help would be appreciated either aimed at the root cause (ideas, solutions) or at this flush dns issue.

Thanks very much

We use a third-party Microsoft patch management system, unfortunately we have to approve all patches manually. It has become a monotonous task to jump on the security bulletin and manually "take-note" of all of the updates released (KB numbers)
to mitigate that vulnerability. After I take note of all of them, I have to jump on the "third-party Microsoft patch management system" and approve every patch (KB #) associated with that Bulletin.
I am wondering if there is an easier way to get a list of all of the new Microsoft patches released just for a specific Microsoft Security Bulletin. My current method is just sifting through the Bulletin and copying/pasting every KB number I find that is
designed to patch the vulnerability.
I would assume there is somewhere I can go or a tool I can utilize which would allow me to get the list of all of the KB numbers that need to be approved.
Or Am I out of luck (And just have to sift through the Bulletin to collect the associated KBs)?

I appreciate any and all suggestions/advice/ridicule.

Hey All,

I've been working in a lab recently where in order to connect to some of the hardware, we have to connect to a special wireless network, we'll call it <hardware network>. In order for everything to work, i have to use a pre-assigned static ipv4 address <hardware IP>, and I must use a specific gateway. I can always make the changes by hand

right-click on start>network connections>right-click on the wifi connection>properties>tcp/ipv4 properties>use the following IP addres.

BUT the big annoyance is that this network doesn't have an internet connection (strictly for connecting to hardware), so I often have to switch between the networks (if i'm pushing code to git, for example). Is there a way for me to save this specific configuration to be automatically used if I attempt to connect to <hardware network>, but if I attempt to connect to another network <internet network>, it allows for automatic IP acquisition?

Hi,

I created a new user acount for my son on my primary desktop. Upon creating it and logging in to the newly created account I see a bunch of my applications on his desktop. I want to make his desktop as clutter free and only have the apps he needs and uses.

Hastily I go and delete some of the shortcut icons only to later find that the same icons have also been deleted on MY desktop.

I later figured out that anything edited under "public desktop" would be shared & affects all users.

Is the only way around this situation to move the specific contents within "public desktop" into My (administer) "desktop" folder?

Answer:Specific desktop icons for specific users

Of course. The point of having a Desktop folder in your user directory is for this purpose. So use it for its intended purpose. I fail to see the reasoning behind wanting another solution when one is already staring you in the face.

I have an audio file (mp3) of a toilet flushing , and I would like to make it so that every time I delete anything , I want to hear the toilet flush. what is the easiest way to apply that sound to the delete action ONLY , and what format do I need to convert my MP3 into so that it will work........

thanks ,

Answer:how to apply a specific sound to a specific action

Heh. I did that quite a few years ago with Win95.
First off, you'll need to convert that mp3 to a .wav file. Audacity can do it in seconds.
Put your .wav file in C: -> Windows -> Media
Then go to your Control Panel, select Sound, then click the Sounds tab.
Scroll down to Windows Explorer in the window you see, and click on Empty Recycle Bin.
The dropdown box below will turn from grey to white. In that dropdown window, choose the name of the .wav file, in this instance, perhaps "Toilet".
Click "Apply". Save your new sound scheme if you wish with a new name.
Every time you empty the Recycle Bin, you'll hear your flush.

I am trying to develop a GPO that will only apply to my primary laptop users while they are using their laptop but am having trouble getting it just right. What this GPO is meant to accomplish is to alter the default my documents location for my laptop users only while using their laptops. If the user signs into another system I don't want it to apply, and if someone else who is not the laptop's primary assigned user signs in, I don't want it to apply.

I have both a Laptops group under my Computers container and a LaptopUsers group under my user's container in AD, but when I apply the GPO to both of these groups it seems to affect these users everywhere, not just on their assigned laptops. The GPO is meant to redirect the My Documents folder from a network location to a local system location which will sync back to the network, so when the laptop is out of the office My Documents are still available.

Thanks for any advice!

Answer:Assigning GPO to specific users on specific systems

Put the GPO for the redirection into a sub OU of computers, link the GPO to that sub OU and then move the computers you want it to affect into that OU, in the scope/security options of the GPO, remove authenticated users and then enter the users you want the GPO to affect once you've done this, make sure its all tested.

I'm not an expert on GPO's and there is probably a much cleaner way to do it but thats how I've managed to do it in the past.

I just discovered this problem when Myrti and I were working on some other problems on my computer. I noted that I'd gotten an 'update failed' several times lately. It said 'Some updates could not be installed. The following updates were not installed. MS.NetFramework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2008, Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2 (KB953297).' The error code was 0X64C.

I checked back in my logs and found that my computer has been attempting this update since October 2009!

When I tried manually at the Microsoft site, it said I needed to upload ActiveXControl, which I did. It still couldn't successfully update that security.

I have the log. Would you like for me to attach? I just did it a few days ago.

Thanks,

Hi. I don't know what has happened but my pc is running strangely recently. For example, I can't install the visual c redistributable (vcredist.exe), or directx 9.0c, and some games don't work which did a while ago - now they crash to the desktop. I haven't got a restore which fixes the problem. It is all a bit strange.
I've got windows 7 64 bit on a Dell vostro - i7 860, 4g ram etc.
I've tried microsoft security essentials, all manner of spyware removers including spyware search & destroy to no avail.
What should be the next step in investigating this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:can't install visual c redistributable, or directx 9.0c, can't update - security update for visual c++, system update...

Microsoft Windows 7 already has DirectX 11, so installing version 9 will always fail and is useless. It also has VC++ redistributable 2005 and 2008. The latest version which is not included on Windows 7 is VC++ 2010 redistributables which you should install (but very few games are designed in VC++ 2010 today). When games fail, they create a crash report or log. You should go through them and try to find the possible cause. What message do games show when crashing?Check Event Viewer to find the possible cause of crashing of a game.

Hello,

Recently Microsoft has been trying to update my software with a security update

{Security Update for Microsoft Office XP (KB921596)}

Unfortunately something is going wrong and I am told that Microsoft was unable to update the security update.

At the moment when I switch off my PC, the turn off button is showing the multicoloured shield next to it (meaning it will update before switching off)

I think it is trying to update the same security update as above.

The situation has been like this for maybe a fortnight now.

Please could you help me to sort the situation out.

Many thanks

Regards Richard Milner.

PS, My security software (Kaspersky Internet Security 2009) has been flashing up a message about Key logging? (what ever that is) whenever I click on & open up my media playing program InterVideo WinDVD 5?.. Could this have anything to do with the aforementioned Microsoft Security update ?

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

In the command prompt window, type or Copy & Paste the following:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

Close the command prompt.
Attach to your post the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your Desktop

Hello,

Upgraded from 8.1 earlier today. Hours later, I realized that the Windows Update dialogue box hangs with nothing going on except the loading dots animation (for up to half-an-hour so far). Can't tell if there are new updates and I'm concerned there could be some in the future that I may need but won't be able to access them.

Hello,

I have a Win2K SP4 (all Critical Updates) laptop that has a weird quirk I noticed recently. I have installed the Security Update KB819696 (Unchecked Buffer in DirectX Could Enable System Compromise) a few times, but it never asks to reboot when finished and will always show up as a critical update even when I have manually rebooted the laptop.

Any idea on what could be causing this and how to solve it? Recently there has been some problems with malware/spyware/adware (which is cleaned) and perhaps something in the registry was corrupted or deleted as a result. Other than that, everything seems to work fine. Thanks for your help.

Answer:Security Update KB819696 in Windows Update even after installing it.

I've had that happen on more than one occasion. MS eventually fixed the problem but your case may be due to other factors.

Here's what Doug Knox offers:

Usage: Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs and save it to your hard drive. Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you'll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix. No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES. Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix. This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.

Hello, everyone!

So a little background first...

My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen), so I pop out the hard drive and do an error check and virus scan on my computer. Everything turned out OK, put the hard drive back in and Windows starts up.

Now, however, even though the internet connection is fine, I'm getting timeouts when trying to go to Windows Update or when updating Security Essentials. Strangely enough, I tried installing other anti-virus programs and experienced connection issues.

I also ran the drive through Malware Bytes and came up clean, so I'm not really sure where to go from here. My dad has some older software that he'd like to keep but doesn't have the original disks to reinstall, so a format would be a last resort.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!

Answer:Windows Update & MS Security Essentials Update timeouts

Are you saying that you cannot connect to Windows Update?

If not....what is the exact error message?

<<My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen)...>>

Are you saying that it would not boot completely...and that it halted at a black screen with blinking cursor in upper left hand corner?

What happens if you try to connect to www.microsoft.com?

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Tuesday 8 January, we are releasing several non-security update packages via Windows Update. The updates include the regular monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Mail Junk Mail Filter, two updates in our regular series of Windows Vista updates (KB943302 for application compatibility and KB943899 for reliability and performance), and one update of particular notice: KB935509. Similar to previous updates that enhanced Windows Vista?s performance and reliability, these updates will be distributed automatically through Windows Update.Tomorrow?s KB935509 release is a little different than past updates. It is a prerequisite for installing SP1 and is applicable only for Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise users, because it only affects versions of Windows Vista supporting BitLocker Drive Encryption.

This update modifies the boot loader to enable successful install or uninstall of the service pack if the PC uses BitLocker encryption. We?re releasing it now to lay the groundwork for future updates and to eliminate any extra reboots by installing it along with updates that already require a reboot. For more information on the update, see KB article KB935509 (which will be posted on Tuesday morning).

Looks like I started this out in the wrong spot. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.If you still want to clean it please do the following===================Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.Extract its contents to your desktop.Once e... Hi guys. I am working on my future father-in-law's computer. When I first got the computer to work on, it had several fake anti-virus and spyware programs on it. I have removed as much as I can and used MalwareBytes, Super AntiSpyware, SpyBot S&D, and Microsoft Security Essentials to clean as much as possible. The scans are now all coming back clean, but I still cannot update the security definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials and when I click on Windows Update, the page always comes back "cannot be displayed". I am also getting random pop-ups for various scandalous websites.

Please let me know what I can do to get this stuff cleaned off.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

I am a college student at home on break and my parents asked me to try and fix the family computer which was, at the time, completely hosed. That being said, I have little knowledge of what was done on the computer in the past or what they did that could have gotten it so infected.

After booting up the computer, it was essentially unusable so the first thing I did was run System Recovery. After that I was at least able to run Windows XP normally to some degree and boot in Safe Mode as well. Upon booting it up, the computer kept popping up "XP Anti-spyware 2011" windows and wouldn't let me access any websites or run any other programs so I switched over to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Registry Mechanic. Each program found a large number of problems (I didn't think to save the logs at the time) and then continued to fix them.

The computer now runs much more smoothly when booted normally, and does not show any obvious signs of malware. However, I am unable to run Windows Update or access the windows update website and am having the same problems with Security Update. Also, when trying to access anti-virus/trojan/spyware websites or forums I will occasionally get redirected to random search engine links. Because of these problems I am assuming that there is still some type of virus/trojan/spyware left on the computer.

In terms of the checklist given in the "Ne... Read more

Answer:Cannot Access Windows Update or Security Update

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log... Read more

Folks
I've asked this question elsewhere and got no firm response. In Windows XP pro [or home for that matter].... if the system has multiple User accounts, particularly those with Admin permissions, is HJT user-specific? Do you need to login and run it multiple times in the various Accounts to get an accurate picture?

thx

Java JRE 6 Update 19 Security Update

Today seems to be the day of the security patch. The Java Runtime Environment has received an update to JRE 6 Update 19 which fixes several security vulnerabilities. Users who have Java installed on their computer systems are encouraged to update to the latest version immediately to fix the security issues.
The changelog lists all the bug fixes of the latest version including changes to root certificates, an interim fix for the Transport Layer Security (TLS) Man-in-the-Middle Attack and the raising of a warning dialog if a signed application contains signed and unsigned components.

I recently used malwarebytes to remove a fake anti-virus program and some other issues. The fake anti-virus appears to be gone, however I can only update Windows Security Essentials manually (Error Code 0x80072ee7), and the windows update site (windowsupdate.microsoft.com) gives me a "Page Cannot be Displayed" error message. Other sites appear to work fine.

Also, after having Firefox or IE open for a few minutes, a new tab gets opened telling me I've won some sort of prize.

Below are the results from running GMER and DDS

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
