I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.
Cheers and many thanks in advance,

That's very reminiscent of similar errors in Win7 - and I wouldn't be surprised to see it being non-genuine.
Please post an MGADiag report BEFORE doing the below potential fixes.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Storage Matrix Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here -

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

If nothing has changed, try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If neither of them work, we'll re-evaluate.

I recieve error C80003FA whenever I do a Windows Update run. It doesn't get past the stage of checking for updates.

I've tried several fixes including:
- Waiting 15 minutes and running Windows Update again.
- Letting Windows Update run on its own schedule.
- SFC /Scannow
- Renaming the Catroot2 Folder.
- Running 3 different Fixit tools.
- Clean windows install.

After each and every one of those fixes I've tried windows update and I still get error C80003FA.

SFC Scannow has previously said no errors, but the last run through it said there were unfixable errors. I've got the log, though for brevity's sake I will keep it until someone asks for it.

Any ideas?

I didn't see any posts about this, so I hope I am not double posting.

After removing a drive load of viruses, I am still not able to update Windows Vista to Service Pack 1. I have even tried to create a new admin user account in hopes that this would work, but no go. I tried running sfc.exe / scannow from the CMD and it did report that it was unable to repair wextract.exe. Also, the file reportingevents.txt located in %system root%\windows\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.txt lists "Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80070490".
Although, I think Windows Defender can update. I need to take a break.

I've got a Dell netbook with a problem. It's running Win7 Starter. When I go to check for updates, it first wants to install the latest Windows updater, but that fails with error code 80004005. If I try again I get error 800700B7.

After trying system restore and running SFC, which found a trivial (I believe) tcpmon.ini error, I finally opted to restore the system to factory condition. Surprise, the exact same error persists.

I can do a lot of updating via local file stores, but I want this machine to be updateable on a continuing basis.

Also, I have a Win7 installation disk. When I tried a repair install, it tells me that the existing system is a later version and it refuses to install.

The only thing I have left is a fresh install from the disk. But I have no idea what is going on here.

Here's another tricky one.
This important security update will not update. It is only 606Kb.
Microsoft says it is caused by a virus problem. I have Norton 360 installed. Norton say it is not a virus.
Microsoft say pay us $120 to fix it. I say I can't afford to pay that for something when I have no way of knowing exactly what the problem really is.
This has been going on since November 2014. All the other updates are installed immediately but not this one.

Hello Peacemaker,

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"

To successfully install the update, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer, and then reinstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer. You may have to work through more than one of the following methods.

Method 1: Manually remove and reinstall .NET Framework
To manually remove and reinstall the .NET Framework, follow these steps:

1. Remove the .NET Framework.
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Note each version of the .NET Framework that is already installed on the computer. Then, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework.
4. When you are prompted, restart the computer.
Method 2. Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up the MSI database state for all the versions of the .NET Framework.

1. Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
2. Install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility as an administrator or as a user account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

Fellow code crunchers,

Every once and a while I will have a download waiting from HP in Windows update. I will try and download it, but it always fails. I have a HP Laser Jet 600 M601 and I believe that's what the download states it is for. Below is the error message I keep getting every time I try and download it.

HP Inc. - Other hardware, Printer - HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601, M602 & M603 printer series (DOT4PAR)

Update type: Optional
HP Inc. Other hardware, Printer software update released in May, 2013

I am not too distressed about this, but I am curious to know what is happening.

Thanks for your answer in advance.

Answer:error code from windows update

Error details: Code 800F020B. This apparently indicates that the device does not exist. So the update may not be applicable to your printer.

If you are not distressed about it & your printer is working well, it might be best to just hide the update, so you don't keep getting the update, & forget about it.

If you really want the update it's always best to get updates directly from the manufacturer, so go to their website & check for any updates that are applicable to particular model printer.

I have windows 7 home premium, when I try to install system updates I get an error code c355. I have tried going into safe mode but cant get onto windows updates as internet doesnt work. Any ideas???

Answer:Windows update error code c355

Do you mean that the internet is not working as a result of trying to install system updates? What were you trying to install? Usually c355 refers to a problem with a driver.
You could try restoring your pc to a time before you downloaded the updates and then try downloading them manually.

The background CBS.log data, however is a nightmare

The really strange thing is that I can find no evidence that an SFC scan has been run in the past 4 months!
This is possibly because of the other corruption present.

Some of the errors I'm seeing in the CBS log make me think that you are likely to be having RAM problems.

Please follow the instructions in this tutorial, and post the results.

Hi, I recently did a fresh reinstall of Retail Windows 7 64bit Home Premium and reinstalled all the drivers that came on my Motherboard CD. I did not install the AsusSuite software. I only installed the VGA drivers for Intel HD 4000, I have not put in my GPU yet. I have input the rest of my system details into my user profile.

I have been having issues with windows update. After multiple restarts the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932) won't install. I tried running "Windows6.1-KB947821-v22-x64.msu" which installed correctly but Service Pack 1 will still not install. I get error Code 800736CC. I tried deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder but that didn't help.

I'd appreciate any help.

Suddenly yesterday Windows update starting returning an error each time I tried to install updates. The updates are being downloaded ok but when I select install I get the following:

Code 800B0100 Windows update encountered an unknown error

I have researched this but the information I found related to "compatability check" software which I guess relates to earlier Windows versions and compatability with Windows 7.

I have also tried the download/install with security switched off, this made no difference either.

Has anyone got an idea where I should go from here?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows Update error code 800B0100

Try the following one by one, checking after each.

1) Disable your firewall.

2) Navigate to the folder C:\windows\softwaredistribution and rename it to something like softdis.old.

3) Download the installer manually from windows download center to your hdd. Then restart in safe mode and install the update by double clicking on the saved file. Restart.

4) Windows Update - Reset

5) Try the MS Fixit.

I get this error code when I try to install Windows Update. I believe it does this because it is trying to install updates for programs for Microsoft Office when I have already erased it from my computer.
I know I could just ignore those updates but I really want it to say I have 0 updates so I can make a new system restore point because my Windows Update hasn't been working for a long time but I finally fixed it and it would've been fixed if I had made a system restore point when I first got my laptop.

Answer:Windows Update Error Code 80070643

If this is some update for non-existing program, right click on that update and click "Hide". It won't bother you anymore.

So not that the cause really matters, but i had a external hard drive transferring video files with my OS and i cancelled it but it never truly canceled and at the same time was running the new update (like 10 "important" updates showed up a few days ago) and i cancelled that too and it too wouldnt truly cancel. So i restarted my PC.

Now when i try to update these 8 things, i get "Failed" and the error code: 800B0100.

3-Sec Update for .Net Framework 3.5.1
4-Security Update for Windows 7 for x64 based Systems
1-Update for Windows 7 for x64 based systems.

I have tried the system update readiness tool and that changed nothing. I have tried the Net framework cleanup tool and that changed nothing. Same with the windows update trouble shooter. ( )

So what do i do? Is this my last option before a clean install?

If all of the steps above yielded no results, the next logical step is to perform an InPlace upgrade.
An in-place upgrade is the final alternative before you have to reinstall the operating system.

Now I tried doing the sfc /scannow but its says "windows resource protection could not start the repair service."

I have also noticed in my registry when you go to "HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows" there is no windows update option.

I have included the CBS thingy along with 2 screenshots.

Hello shlackinfrackin and welcome to the forums

Open your start menu, and in the search box type regedit, when the results load, right click on regedit and select Run as administrator. From regedit, I would like you to navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

Right click on the Component Based Servicing key and select Permissions. Click Advanced, then select the Owner tab. On this list, click on your username (e.g. Mine is displayed as Tom (Tom-PC\Tom)) to select it, tick the box labelled Replace owner on subcontainers and objects then click Apply then OK.

Now, in this first permissions window, you should see a few entries in the Group or user names: box. Click on Administrators once to select it, then check that the Full Control (Allow) box is ticked, if it isn't then tick it. Then repeat this check for TrustedInstaller. Then click OK, and close regedit.

Then reboot, run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT), and upload the CheckSUR.persist.log please!

Good day fine folks at MG. Many unsucessful attempts to install Service Pack 1 on a co-worker's Pc. Keep getting the Error Code: 8024200D.

I've tried using MS System Readiness Tool and I've also used the MS Update Troubleshooting Tool.

My other option is to open communication with Microsoft via e-mail. Thought I might get a better response from the fine folks over here.

Anyone have a solution for this?

System is:
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit

Not sure you need hardware specs but here they are:
Asus Laptop
Pentium Dual Core Processor, 2.3GHz
Ram - 4 GB

Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer:Windows 7 SP1 Update Error Code 8024200D

Manually downloaded the SP1 update and trying that now.

I also shut off virus protection and firewall while doing the update, as MS has suggested that being a possible cause to updates not installing.

I can't check for updates for some reason. The thing is, I think this may be part of a larger issue with connectivity. I'm also having connection issues with gmail and youtube as well. In Gmail, sometimes things don't load after I click on them, and I can't attach files to e-mails. Another forum I like to go to loads very slowly on firefox and won't load at all on IE 11. My internet appears to be fine as most sites aren't giving me trouble that I know of. Are they all connected?

I did do a windows update last week and installed a bunch of security updates and everything seemed fine then. So, what's going on? I can't attach the CBS folder, as it is way too big. It is 285 MB. Is that normal?

I ran SURT and it installed hotfix KB947821 and it didn't fix anything. I then ran sfc /verifyonly and it said there were no violations.

Hello TSF,

I'm working on a new in box Dell PC that came with Windows 7 (64bit) Professional. After setting up the PC, copying user data and software, we attempted to update windows.

Everything was updating perfectly until we tried to update SP1 (KB976932) and Security Update (KB2425227). Trying to install either updaet will produce error code 800F0818.

I have tried downloading the updates directly to the desktop and installing my self but no luck (same error code).

I keep getting this code when I attempt to search for new updates see attached. I downloaded the SURT and it installed Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) Successfully. A tech with microsoft had me run the stand alone updater and everytime Windows tries to install the updates most all of them fail. See attached screen shot. I ran the SFC/scannow and it did not find any integrity violations. The compressed CBS file (22.5 MB) exceeded the Max FIlesize of 8 MB so I was unable to attach to this post.

Please let me know what to try next.

W7 update keeps telling me that there is an optional update for my Intel Graphics.
However, it won't install, saying that the update had failed, and gives me the following error code.

error Code 8007013

I've googled it, and searched here but can't find anything.

Anyone know what the error is ?

Answer:Windows 7 update error Code 8007013

The error code is missing a character - do you mean 8007013D ??

Is this a default install, or have you changed the paths for any of the standard folders?

Have a look in the Installed Updates, and Programs & Features listings If you can find the update listed, attempt to uninstall it.
Once uninstalled, reboot twice, then run another Check for Updates, and try installing it again.

Hi everyone,
I have been having trouble using windows update on my computer. Basically, everytime I try to update I recieve error code 80244019 that states that there was a problem checking for updates and windows could not search for a new update. I googled the error code and on the windows website it said that the most common case is that a virus has turned off my windows update. I ran both my anti-virus program (Trend Micro) and spybot search and destroy but I still have this error. Please help.

Answer:Windows update error code 80244019
Looks like your system should be checked for malware.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed as the OS in my T61p. Today, Windows Update showed the follwoing two updates available: --  Update for Windows Live Sign-in Asistant (KB 967912)   --  Important--  Lenovo - Other hardware  - ThinkPad PM Device    --   Recommended The first one (Windows Live Sign-in Assistant) installed with no problems.  The second one (ThinkPad PM Device) failed installation and the following error message was provided: Code 80070103  --  Windows Update encountered an unknown error. It amazes me that Microsoft offers a specific update to my system and then, when it fails installation, all it can provide is a message about an unknown error... After some research, it is still Microsoft itself that suggests I contact the hardware manufacturer for further assistance... I am not aware of any problem with my system, so I'm tempted to just discard the update. But, out of curiosity, I wonder what those PM initials (as in ThinkPad PM Device) stand for and also whether anyone has ever encountered this same problem and/or can provide any insights into the real meaning of the error message. Thanks in advance for any feedback.    .

Answer:Error code 80070103 during Windows Update

JanetL wrote in another thread a few considerations on updating or not updating your system with anythng that comes around, just because it's available. JanetL will certainly excuse me for taking the liberty of citing her here, out the context on which she made her statement, but I must say I agree completely with her reasoning, and this taught me a good lesson. I consider myself as being one of those "hot-blooded" enthusiasts who constantly labour to keep their systems up to the minute on all and everything that pops-up... I realize now this is a mistake. Like she says: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"... In fact, why am I even bothering to "out of curiosity" asking the community what the hack that "Lenovo - Other hardware  - ThinkPad PM Device    --   Recommended" update" is all about and why my system refuses to install it? JanetL, you are completely right. My system is NOT broke. Why on earth am I trying to fix it? Kudos for your posting!

My Windows 7 Pro 64-bit desktop has not been able to do updates for several weeks. When I try to do updates I get this error code: Code 8007370B Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

When I followed the Get Help With This Error, Microsoft suggested I download, install and run Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64. I did and it did not help. I still can not do updates.

I read your instructions and have created the compressed CBS folder and tried to attached it to this post but the size limit for zipped files is 8 Mb and my CBS folder is 12 Mb. How shall I get it to you?

If it doesn't help:

1. Make sure you copy-paste the command:

Windows update has not worked for me since July of 2012. I have tried to repair the installation via upgrade from the install disk with no success. I have since run the SURT and tried to run SFC with the following error: windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.

The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate X64. The windows update issue prevents me from installing SP1, IE 9/IE 10, and some other SW as well.

Thanks for any possible solutions.

Hello nolimitkemet and welcome to the forums

101 errors to fix - this could take a while! You've got quite a lot of registry corruption which isn't helping matters so let's fix that all up and see where it leaves us.

Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:
After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:

C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS (it has no file extension)

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a 64 bit operating system. I haven't used this computer in over a year, but my brother has been using it since, but hasn't kept it updated at all or with any anti-virus. I was able to install everything on Windows Update except Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2621440). I've tried everything from simply restarting, rebooting in safe mode and safe mode with networking (I could not open windows update either of those ways), and doing a safe mode with networking full scan with Malewarebytes Anti-Malware, Super Anti Spyware, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I did find 2 trojans and removed them and rebooted, but was unable to install this security pack still. When I tried installing the individual version of the security pack online, it told me the update did not apply to this system. I also tried running the windows update repair tool.

On a side note, but related to the issue of trying to make the computer more secure, I made a separate administrator account and downgraded my own account to a standard user, but I'm unable to demote my brother's administrator account. His is not password protected, but there is no option to change the account type, even when I'm logged on as him or under the other administrator account I just made.

Answer:Windows update error code 8007065E

Assign a password to your brother's account. Maybe then the demotion will work.

My client's Win 7 64 bit desktop PC will not run"Windows Update".... Can't say when this quit working.. possibly in the last 1-2 months... I now get the red "x" and error message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running"... when I try to start it in "services", I get "system Error 5"....

Also, the downloading using E 11 doesn't work,,, get the message "xxxxx contained a virus and was deleted".... I have scanned the PC with combofix, Malwarebytes, Rougue Killer, and others, and nothing is found. Downloads work fine with Google Chrome..

Finally, I also see "windows defender" is now missing from this system.

Not sure if any of these are related, but need to get Windows Update working again

Any suggestions on how to get Windows Update working again? This PC is out of use by my client until I get this resolved.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer~

I've been trying to update windows 7 (64 bit pro) for a couple weeks now, but every time I try, it says update failed, and gives me a code 80072efe. Googling that led me to a bunch of microsoft tech forum pages, most saying I should delete / rename catroot2. I booted into ubuntu, renamed the folder to _catroot2, and booted back into windows. Same deal. Other posts said it could be a virus, but a system scan (AVG, new definitions) came back with 0 infections.

Thanks in advance

Answer:error code 80072efe (windows update)

AVG is not a very good product anymore compared to what is offered now days by Microsoft, Avast and, Avira. I wouldn't trust it's results. But it does sound like a possible malware infection.

I would download this, which is a Microsoft scanning tool that specifically searches for and removes malware that targets Windows functionality. It works well doing a full scan. Otherwise it is not a replacement for AVG or any of the previously listed products. It has one single function. This is normally downloaded monthly via Windows Update, but since you are unable to download it normally, you can download it this way.
