Windows is not genuine - started a few months ago

Question: Windows is not genuine - started a few months ago

So... randomly a few months ago i started getting messages usually every hour saying that Windows 7 is not genuine - unfortunately since my computer fails i cannot seem to download the tool MS gives me - here are some details from Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool -

Preferred Solution: Windows is not genuine - started a few months ago

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows is not genuine - started a few months ago

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hello! I built a custom computer & installed OEM Windows 7 Pro-OA.

The program activated with no problems and has been updating all along, with no problems until yesterday, which interestingly is exactly 3 months to the hour that I installed it. I received absolutely zero notices of problems until the "Windows not Genuine" issued happened.

Hopefully someone can help me. Here is the report:

Answer:Windows not genuine after exactly 3 months of use

I may not be too much help with correcting the issue but the first thing I saw was the 8th line down in the code box is

Quote:
Windows License Type: Retail

That looks like a problem to me, unsure of what you might need to do. Somebody will be along that knows much more than me to help out. Just thought I'd point out what jumped out immediately.

Strange that it would be three months to the day before anything came up, especially with an OEM installation and an the indication of a retail license. I've always thought it was either one or the other.

About two months ago, it may have been less, i had my computer sent down by geek squad to get fixed for some part problems, camera, charger port, exc. they had to reinstall windows for my camera to work (... i don't think it does still anyways...) Now i get an error saying it's not genuine. i don't have the key because i have no clue who downloaded it, if it was in store while i dropped it off, or sent out to 1 of 100 possible people who could have fixed it.... i saw a thread earlier about someone who had the same problem, but different scenario i think, this information might help, not sure...

Answer:Windows claims to not be genuine after two months or so

Windows is unable to find the SLIC table in the BIOS required to self-activate the OEM_SLP Key in use

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

Answer:Not Genuine Windows Error ~8 months after install.

Try re-entering the Key that you have from the disc or COA sticker (on the side or bottom of the machine, also check the battery compartment if it's a laptop) that the system builder provided.

Bought this laptop a few months ago from a coworker who i cant get in touch with to help with the problem im having. I do not have the OEM Vista key because the COA sticker is damaged and I didnt receive any of the packaging or paperwork from either the laptop or the 7 upgrade when i purchased the computer. After an update windows said it wasnt genuine. I have run sfc \ scannow and windows found a few corrupt files but succesfully repaired them. still having validation issues. Is there anything i can do besides contact HP for an OEM vista restore disk or purchasing a new Product Key for windows?

Hi,

After reading a few posts about this issue and trying to fix it, it seems it hasn't resolved.

I have read a lot of NoelDP's comments, so would love one of your 'easy fix' replies rather than the one or two 'reinstall!' replies.

I loaded up my computer yesterday and it showed me barebones non-Aero desktop with none of my icons, etc. The sound was not working. Failed to connect to windows service errors were showing in the taskbar.

I restarted and it seemed to work fine.

After a while my a message in the taskbar told me my windows was not genuine.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have started my computer up again this morning and it's showing from the start that it's not genuine.

I have entered my Key in to SLUI.exe 4, and it seems to have activated for now. The results below are from AFTER this activation and that means the computer is looking quite fine right now. I will restart and post another MGADiag if it comes up as not genuine again.

Anyway, I think this is what you need. The MGADiag.exe results:

Answer:Windows showing as not genuine after 5 months + strange desktop screen

OK, restarted and it seems genuine.

Things to note being:

1. I uninstalled Comodo Firewall before the restart.
2. I activated via phone before the restart (this was mentioned in my previous post).
3. I just updated my browser AFTER the restart (just now).

Description:
My machine always prompts for Windows Genuine when started.

Machine Details:
OS: Windows XP SP2 with the updates Windows Dark Edition v.6
Hardware: Lennovo G400

Since I updated my Windows XP SP2 with the dark Edition update, my machine always prompts with the message that i am using the counterfeit software and not the genuine windows. It then asks me to activate in Now or Later.

Choosing either of the options don't do anything and lets me in. Its just the message that is bothering me since it prompts everytime i log in my machine.

Answer:My machine always prompts for Windows Genuine when started.

... Mmm... Well are you by any chance using a version of XP other to the ones sold in the store? If so, then you won't get any help with this since this is supposed to happen and you're supposed to buy the proper copy of Windows.

I am new here so hope I have done this right. I tried to follow your instructions properly so apologies if I have done something wrong.

This problem started about 10 days ago. I have been trying to work out what may have caused it as I haven't done a reboot from scratch. The only 2 things that I have done differently to normal are: 1) I bought the home edition of Spybot SD after using the original Free version for years. 2) I recently downloaded the free version of the VPN blocker Tunnelbear and opened it for the first time.

Apart from these 2 things I cannot think of anything else that may have caused this issue but it is driving me nuts and I am worried that if I don't find the cause and fix it soon it may take the issue a step further and cause a bigger problem than I currently have.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Answer:Recently started to get a Windows Not Genuine msg repeatedly.

The worst case scenario is what happened to me with my Windows [that happened to you as described above]:
Even after Microsoft tried a huge download [ISO], a "dirty" install, it still would not fix NonAuthentication.
Finally, I was forced to reinstall from scratch because my image backup was of the NonAuthentication.
It is possible that far wiser techs than I can help you fix this. There are Windows ReAuthentification tools out on Microsoft's web sites somewhere that just might do the quick-fix for ya!

Answer:Started getting Windows not Genuine errors after 3 years w/OEM product

Both problems have the same source - possibly corrupt drivers, or possibly corrupted WU store.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

Hi,

My parents PC has run into some issues with genuine advantage (it is genuine - has been running fine for a year or two) and in attempts to fix that i've caused more issues (i know, i know ). Please note this is my parents PC, not mine - specs are not per my profile and it might take a while to get back to you at times.

Updates are set to notify, but not install. When i try to "Check for updates" i get the error:

Windows Update cannot current check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer.

I also cannot update AV definitions in MSE.

Needless to say, a restart doesn't resolve. Firewall is TinyWall and has been opened/switched off at times to see if there was a communication block but all looks ok there. Internet connection is also fine.

I assume the Genuine issue is preventing updates, although 'service not started' is a mystery. When i try to "Resolve Online Now" (activation) i get an error running/installing the downloaded file WindowsActivationUpdate.exe:
"Update installation failed. Error information - 0x80072EFD (0)"

I don't know if this is helpful but i've seen it be asked for often enough so i've included it. MGADiag says (removed license/hash):

Hi,

This is my first post...

I bought a PC from a website years ago, Cube24/7, in a bit of a rush. The website in retrospect was a bit dodgy, and based on other reviews of the site, I am lucky I got something for my money at all!

It was stated to have Windows 7 on it - which turned out to be not true. After spending my cash on a PC, I then did not want to fork out for an OS (as it did not have a default one) so, alas, I used a copy of a friend?s.

It worked fine initially, but then I was greeted with the familiar message to many of ?This copy of windows is not genuine?. At first I thought I would just ignore it, but eventually went down the route of getting a product key online. This worked fine for a while, but then required me to do it every couple of weeks...

NOW this has finally caught up with me, and I cannot access my user accounts. It comes up with an error message relating to user profiles being unavailable. I have tried many things, such as going on as a guest (which works fine) and doing a system clock back or system restore, but when it asks for the administrator?s password, I get the same error relating to user accounts.

Ultimately, I am looking for any way to restore the system so that I can access my user accounts, as I now do not really want to buy Windows 7 for the PC, if the error still occurs.

Any help would be appreciated and just contact me for queries.

Thanks

Isaac

Answer:Cannot access user accounts after months of "not genuine" windows

Hello Isaac,

You're just going to simply need to purchase a legal copy of Windows, and do a clean install an activate.

I installed Win7 about 1 year ago as an upgrade to XP. I had no problems until a few months ago - now I am getting fairly frequent BSOD. There have been few significant HW or SW upgrades recently, other than the usual MS distributions.

From looking as some of the debug reports, it appears there may be a problem with the USB support. The computer does have a lot of USB hubs and ports, but no recent additions.

Hopefully the attached files will help. The dmp file is from the BSOD today and the driverview file lists all non-MS drivers.

Thanks for any help

Answer:BSOD started a few months ago on old computer

Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
We need to see this file for some more info about the issue.

Hi all About 13 months ago I got a X220. Most of the time I used it in the office with the battery not installed. According to the integrated counter it only has 17 charge cycles (which seems a bit to low in my opinion). Now shortly after the warranty for the battery is over the system keeps warning me, that I use a "not genuine Lenovo-made or authorized battery". While those messages are annoying the real problem is that the system fails to correctly identify the battery level. Sometimes it is not charging the battery thinking it is already full or shuts down the computer believing the battery is empty, although it has been charged for a full day and used only 5 min. After restart the system indicates a full battery again and can be used for 5 hours or so... The battery I use is the one I got with my computer (directly from a reputable online store). Is that a hardware problem with the battery or a software problem? I have made any changes to my setup recently. Are Lenovo-batteries programmed to fail after warranty is over?

Answer:Battery not genuine anymore after 13 months

Hi Hagi, thanks for posting. It really hard to determine the cause at this point. But howere To narrow down the issue further lets start by updating the BIOS and Power Manager and from there we'll work our to see the cause. Hi Folks,             I guess I am aiming this question at Mark or one of the other Lenovo people who frequent the forum. I recieved my Laptop (300 n200  0769-BRG) as a birthday present back in January this year. It was bought from Laptops Direct in the UK (invoice date: 2008-01-21). On firing the Laptop up I registered with the online registration thing that appears when you start the machine up. Since owning it the dvd drive died and was replaced under warranty with no hassle. However, the replacement has started exhibiting similar behavior (problems reading dvds) and upon checking my warranty status online I find it supposedly expired on the 26-09-08: Type:0769 Model: BRG Serial number:  xxxxxx   Status:Out of warranty Expiration date:2008-09-26 Location:  UNITED KINGDOM I have an html copy of the invoice clearly stating invoice number and order date etc which I can email to Lenovo warranty staff (athough as it was a present the machine was ordered by my aunt so her name is on the invoice). What can I do to sort out the obvious discrepency between the order date and the fact that the warranty started almost three months before the laptop was ordered? Advice welcome as always Thanks in advance Regards Rob

Answer:ASK: Warranty started 3 months before Laptop was ordered ??

Call Lenovo service, and tell them that your warranty date does not reflect the invoice date, they will then proceed to change your warranty date, once they received a copy of the invoice/receipt.

I can't figure out why my computer shuts down, and don't have the money to take it to a repair shop. This started some months back, but I've had the computer for a lot longer.  My brother built the PC.I completely unhooked everything, and put all the parts back into the case.  Same problem. The oddity of this problem is that, I can surf the web just fine.  But I enjoy programming with my PC, and when I open my C# 2010 express IDE, my computer will instantly shut down, or shut down within minutes of running it.I tried complete reformat of windows, same problem.  And I have a virus scanner.. so it's not a virus.I've cleaned out my computer with canned air.Currently all I have hooked up is:  motherboard, power supply, hard drive, ram and video card.I don't know a whole lot about hardware, but here are some of my stats, that I'm reading off a program called AIDI64:CPU Type: Dual Core AMD 64 X2 5200+Motherboard Name:  Biostar NF4U AM2GVideo Card:  nVidia Geforce 9400 GT (i temp put this one in, to see if video card was the problem.. still shuts down)Ram:  two sticks, 2gb each.If you need more stats (and you probably will) let me know what you need.   Thanks, I appreciate any help or advice you can give.

I used to get a BSOD before I updated to a new hard drive, since my old hard drive pretty much went to crap. I upgraded to a Crucial M4 64GB for boot and a 1TB WD hard drive for storage. (That was 10 months ago) Everything was fine until about a week ago. I got a BSOD. I thought nothing of it, figured it wasn't going to happen again. Then they started happening more. So, I tried updating my Nvidia driver today. Every time I get to the part where I'm installing I get a BSOD. I also set it to do a clean install, so all my preferences are wiped and I can no longer use my 2nd monitor now, or my regular resolution. That's why I'm here. To fix this dang problem.

P.S. This BSOD also happens at random times while I'm searching the web and other crap.

Here are my Specs:

Asus P8Z68V-PRO
EVGA GTX 480
Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge
Crucial M4 64GB SSD
1TB WD (Don't know exact model)
Corsair 650W PSU
Windows 7 64bit

If you need more details just let me know.

I update and save quite a few files each day, and I can see in File History that there are many saved versions for these files.
This would fill up my backup drive fairly quickly, and therefore, I need to reduce 'Keep saved versions' from the default of 'forever' to about 3 months.  But does this mean that all files older than 3 months will be deleted my File History backup?
What happens to all my files that have only ever been saved once, but are older than 3 months?  Are these retained in File History or deleted?
The forums on File History do no make this very clear.

Hi

I have an ASUS notebook (U31F i5 with 4 GB mem) which until recently I used only occasionally. It has Legit Office 2010, but no CD/DVD drive. My desktop hard disk crashed in a big way so I am using the notebook as my main computer.

It has just recently started throwing up messages that my Windows Homw Premium (x64) is not genuine. It is gebuine OEM and activated (back when I got the notebook), and I have not tampered in any way.

I have had a look at some other threads on this forum on this issue, and so have dowloaded and run MGAdiag.exe, but to my inexpert eye, it appears to report everything OK.

I have pasted text in below, and would welcome more expert advice as to whther I have missed something, and if not, what should I do next?

regards

PB

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

Hi,

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Used since Win7 came out with no genuinity issues until now.

A short while after the SP1 update I started getting popups claiming my Windows is not genuine. I know for a fact that my Windows is genuine.

Properties show my Windows is activated. I have activated both online and by phone yet the popup still keeps appearing. The MGA diagnostics show that there is a tampered file and apparently it is causing the validation to flag my system as not genuine:

I have tried to fix this for a while now. The file seems to be associated with MUI packages and Something called Vistalizator.

I have checked the registry and there are no MUI's. US-EN only. I do not have anything called Vistalizator.

I am rather frustrated with googling in microsoft pages as they all lead to the Vistalizator and MUI packs but I don't have them so the fix does not apply.

Thanks.

Hello all, and thank you for the oppurtunity to post.
I got a Pop-up, titled Microsoft Security Essential, which states I am infected by a Trojan. At the same time I was surprised to see a Windows Genuine notification , which stated that because I have made major changes since I first loaded Windows XP Pro, I now have to reactivate windows. Is this for real? The Microsoft notice will not go away no matter what I do, it sits in the middle of the screen and resists all efforts to close. If this is a Virus I am sure I will need Help in removing. Thanking you in advance,

A friend of mine has a Windows XP Home Edition machine running Service Pack 2. She called me along this afternoon because she has been having problems with the machine for several weeks! Anyway this machine runs Norton Internet Security Center which was up to date as of a few weeks ago, but because of her problem it no longer seems able to complete its update process although she has 322 days left of her subscription. I tried several times but each time the update process terminated after doing some of the downloads. There is also an icon in her system tray area (right hand side) which refers to the non-genuine windows message and tells her to clickon it to resolve the non-genuine Windows problem.

The problem she has is that on boot up she gets a message saying that her version of Windows is not genuine (it is since it was supplied with the machine 4 years ago) and what is more it talks about Windows XP Professional whereas she has Windows XP Home. In addition to these messages which give her the option to resolve the problem now or later, she gets pop-ups at various times saying that her copy of Windows is not genuine, maybe counterfeit etc.

In addition when these problems started to occur she says she was no longer able to connect to the internet (she has a router and broadband) - I noticed that her connection was disabled so I re-enabled this and we can now connect to the Internet.

She also has problems with IE (think it is V8) whereby it comes up with an error aft... Read more

My HP Pavilion dv6 laptop suddenly has decided Windows is not Genuine. I put in the number on the bottom of the laptop and it says it is verified and good. But then after a while it goes back to saying it is not Genuine. I am out of the country at the moment, and I need to fix this in the meantime. I do Slui 3 and fix it, because if I try to go online to do this it won't finish it up, it just sits there loading. I haven't had issues with this laptop at all otherwise. Been using it for years. Bought it brand new. I do have virus protection but I am beginning to wonder if this is a virus? Or something like that? You would think that after entering the right number and getting the yes this is valid that it would be fine?

What AV are you using?
Please disable real-time scanning/protection and reboot

If the notification has disappeared, re-enable real-time scanning and reboot again

If the notification is still present, first check whether the real-time scanning is still switched off If so, then re-enable it and post the result. If it's turned itself back on then tell me or try again using a different disable option.

I have a MSDNAA account where I downloaded my copy of Windows 7 Pro, so its genuine, but when my computer is idle for sometime, in the lower right corner of the screen, sometimes appears the "not genuine" text with "evaluation copy etc etc". I go to Control Panel - System, then windows activates itself again, turning genuine again. This happened two times, yesterday and today. Is this a bug or what?

Answer:Windows 7 pro activation - genuine / not genuine

Hello, I am using an Acer Aspire 5738G, which originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Later I got the free Windows 7 Home Premium update disc and never encountered any problem.

But since the last 1 month or so, I've been getting this 'Windows not genuine' message on a random basis. Microsoft Security Essentials says that it will disable itself within 30 days if the issue is not resolved. When I click on 'Resolve issue', an IE window is opened and takes me to Microsoft's website. When I do all the steps explained, everything goes back to normal and my Windows is again considered as genuine.

I am a bit worried, although I can always solve the problem, it still irritates me when I see the 'Windows not genuine' message. What could be the cause of the problem and what is the solution?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:'Windows not genuine' message even though it is genuine

I purchased said unit Sept. last year and within a few months the battery started discharging for no reason I could see. Battery returned to Lenovo, tested and a new battery sent out (old one apparently kaput). I thought the problem was solved until a few days ago when... Battery starts discharging again for no reason I can see. Laptop eventually went into hibernation. Unplugged charger, plugged back in, switched on then powered up the laptop and the battery started charging. This sequence of events was repeated 3 times in 1 week, until yesterday when powering up the laptop failed. Took the battery out and tried laptop on charger only. Nothing. Put battery back in and tried to power up - then noticed battery indicator gave 3 orange flashes 1 second apart before stopping. Did the battery discharge thing (pressing in the power button etc.). Still nothing. The unit seems to have failed completely. Can someone tell my what I might be dealing with here - a failed motherboard? Yet again I'm going to have to send this laptop back for repair, and it's been nothing short of a nightmare because I rely on it to do work. I've never experienced something like this before with a purchased laptop and I suspect the original battery problem was caused by a fault inside the laptop. As the machine is still within warranty can I request a new machine or a full refund because I simply don't want to use something which may be inherently unstable? Looking at the views ... The battery in my first gen S10 died after about 7 months. Fortunately, I was still well within my warranty so Lenovo held up their end and replaced it. However, after about 8 months that second battery too no longer holds a charge and my original warranty has since expired. Phone support reiterated as much and denied any help.  This leads me to ask, shouldn't the second battery carry with it a full one year warranty? How can Lenovo not stand by a battery that dies in less than a year? This seems like more than just bad luck and has me questioning whether I will purchase another Lenovo product in the future.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Im in a trouble, so im hoping that you will help me.
I had a genuine windows 7 for a laptop a while ago, then i sent the laptop to my parents in a different country.
So i bought a new pc, without a operating system, driven by a lack of money i downloaded the old not genuine xp. Along came problems, unknown errors, bugs, etc.
Like for example, now i cannot start safe mode, i cannot make a new partition thru cmd or partition magic cause of somekind of file xmnt.exe is missing.
Sadly, i want to keep my bought games and programs, 'cause my internet is pretty slow, so it will take for ages to redownload/reinstall everything.

The question is: Can i upgrade my not genuine windows xp to windows 7 by buying it and installing like it's a common program keeping all of the programs/games/etc.?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Upgrade not genuine windows xp to genuine windows 7.

Sadly if you are looking to regain stability your best bet would be a fresh install of windows 7
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

as outlined there you can do a fresh install with the upgrade disc, this would result in the loss of your games and programs, though do a straight upgrade from xp to win 7 without cleaning out the garbage is just going to make win 7 run horribly too.

Hello,

problem with my external hard drive.....this did happen before, but having reformatted in may it all seemed ok....so, i'm at least less inclined to panic thinking i've lost my 300gb or so of data - hope i'm right!

so, basically after trying to back up onto this (i would say unstable?) external HD (conceptronic, 500gb, "grb'n'go") - at a certain point it has a 'write error' or something like that - by the way, i try to treat it wit kid gloves by only having it on for about half an hour at a time - as it seems lengthy use was the problem - the plug overheats & so does the machine.....

anyway, it basically does not appear any longer - having left it switched off to cool overnight - plugging in the usb, NO icon in system tray, no drive appearing in 'my computer' panel.
so i then started looking in 'computer management' - but got the following message when i clicked on storage:

"the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no devices associated with it. the snapin's display may be inconsistent with the removable storage service. if the problem persists please restart the snapin."

i wasn't really sure what to do, then thought - ok let's try 'services' & sure enough the device was not active. so i tried to start it - no joy - got this message from services:

Microsoft has let the cat out of the bag a week early and stated "there is not another WinHEC planned before Windows 7 is released."
As the WinHEC conference is an annual affair, providing the conference isn't cancelled next year then this would put Windows 7 on target for a RTM before November next year.
The revelation follows comments from ASUS CEO Jerry Shen discussing the future of the ASUS Eee PC in an interview with Laptop Mag. "I think in the future in the second half of next year we will put Windows 7 on Eee PCs" said Shen.
If all of this is true and Microsoft is on target with Windows 7 then recent rumours of a Beta 1 in December would not be far off.

Is there a way to turn it from a preview into Windows 8 Pro?

Can I continue to use it as a preview or will my computer evaporate into a cloud of smoke if I do that?

it used to charge 100%,but lately its stops at 80%,I thought the battery life would last a few years, can any body help,i would be so great full TONYX

Answer:lap top only charges 80%,its only 8 months old,windows 8

mmm... often seen this to be resolved by allowing the battery to discharge "fully" - totally flat etc... Then recharge...I have seen suggestions/recommendations to allow a battery to fully discharge now and then - so as to prevent any memory effects (which lithium batteries are not "supposed" to suffer). Is said to prolong the life...Some suggest remove the battery if running on mains power; as that too will lengthen battery life as battery will hold charge for a while and then it naturally decay...I have an elderly/olde Acer Aspire (2005 at least) with the original battery still OK... It has been removed for periods of time - when it appeared to have charging problems; it wouldn't charge up properly. But after a total clean install/rebuild of the operating system (XP-Pro) the battery charges fine to a full 100%, and retains it too...message edited by trvlr

Can someone please please please tell me how to get windows 10 off my laptop. I have done two clean installs and i tried a hard drive wipe keeping my files NOTHING works. Seriously i do not want this operating system on my laptop it has totally screwed up the laptop its constantly crashing every time it wakes up from sleep and is super glitchy just working within the OS. So can someone please help i do not care what i have to do i have backed up all my stuff. I just want it off. Thanks

Answer:Uninstall windows 10 after having it for 6 months

I have done two clean installs does that mean you have the DVD for your previous op sys? (Windows 7 or 8.1?)
You could buy a new harddrive and install your previous op sys on that.
It could just be that you haven't got the Windows 10 drivers for the hardware, or when you did a clean install of previous op sys you didn't download the drivers for that either.
A few more details would help, what was your previous op sys and what dvds do you have? and what is the make and model of your laptop and did you get the drivers needed?

Is anyone else excited for some of the upcoming changes?

Are you already running the preview version or waiting until the final version so you don't have to reinstall once it ships? I personally am waiting until it ships as I already deal with entirely too many OS's day in and day out. Win 2k3, 2k8, 2012, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8...no more Vista machines. Hopefully no more XP machines soon as well.

Which features are you most excited about? As someone who does a lot of web development the rewritten developer tools in Internet Explorer look promising (I have a preview version on a Windows 7 VM)

Answer:Less than 2 months til Windows 8.1 release day

Been playing with the 9471 release since it came out and there is a lot that's changed in 8.1. As much as people say Microsoft hasn't listened with 8 they really did with 8.1. Short of Metro off, and I do understand that's all a lot of folks care about, just about every other major issue that I know of in 8 was addressed in some fashion in 8.1. Booting to the desktop, some configurability in the hot corners, better Modern app multitasking and support for multiple monitors, better in the box training, better UI cues and guidelines for them, overall much improved in the box Modern apps particularly the Mail and Music clients (though the Photos app lost Facebook and Flikr integration which seems stupid) and the Start Screen is significantly improved with much better manageability and better keyboard and mouse operation though context menuing still needs to be improved.

It's a pretty big step in the right direction but it's not enough to appease the hardcore desktop folks but I do think it will be better accepted by consumers, particularly if next gen Windows 8 tablets are what I'm hoping for. Bay Trail tablets should be a big boost forward in performance and capability, and hopefully the pricing will be there, that's really got to improve.

Just recently, my super fast notebook struggles to do anything. It fails to load any pages in a browser before it shows 'not responding' and / or crashes the browser completely.  I've uninstalled the Chrome browser and tried again and the same thing happens. The same behaviour in the Edge browser where I also cleared all the data. I recently installed Adobe Photoshop and wondered if that could be the problem so I went to the control panel to uninstall it.... but the control panel freezes and so far I've been unable to uninstall it. I'm now having to use a work laptop for personal use as the notebook which was purchased in January is simply useless, slow and freezes a lot when trying to do tasks that it recently used to zip through with ease. Can anyone help? Microsoft has stepped up its effort to promote its Vista operating system, but Windows XP just isn?t going away. Perhaps Win7 should be based on WinXP instead of adding more bloat to Vista? I think Microsoft should get a clue. They should give customers what they want and not what Microsoft wants them to have.

I had a non-genuine copy of Ms Office installed on my computer, and have now purchased a genuine copy. Uninstalling the old (non-genuine) copy is impossible because it doesn't have an uninstaller, and it doesn't even show in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. So I just installed my genuine copy in a different folder in Program Files, so that the non-genuine copy wouldn't interfere with the newly installed genuine copy.

The problem is that even though I tried opening Ms Word or Excel directly from the newly installed folder and not from the old link to the old version, it still gives me a message (like before) that says "Get Genuine Office - This copy of Office is not genuine".

How do I get rid of the old (non-genuine) Ms Office if I am unable to uninstall it? Please don't tell me to work on the registry - I don't want to touch the registry because I'm not a computer pro, and I won't know what I'm doing. I just want to get rid of the message that says get genuine Office.

I am using Windows XP Home.

Thank you

Its all in the title. Here is an attachment of the watermark. I updated through an upgrade package right when windows 7 launched and it was working flawless but since today I have this dialogue box coming up which says that your copy of windows is not genuine and stuff like that.
There's an error code at the bottom of the box which is 0xC004E002 and I have tried two or more things in fixing this but with no success.

Answer:What do I do when Wndows 7 is genuine but Microsft believes its not genuine?

There's a few things you can do.
If you believe it is legitimate, call MS support with the appropriate info at your fingertips and go through the automated system. (it has treated me quite well, both when talking to a computer and to a live rep)
The install could be damaged somewhere. My oldest sister once screwed with the middle sister's PC and one of the few symptoms was it complaining about lack of genuine-ness. Either a repair install or clean install fixed it.
The usual check the disk for errors, do that sfc scannow procedure you'll be able to find with Bing, and check for any malware.

I recently downloaded SP1 to my Windows 7 machine and shortly thereafter a message appeared on the lower right hand corner indicating that "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine". I bought this machine used and so I verified the key with Microsoft and it is a genuine OEM key but try as I may there is nowhere to enter a product key. I go to start-computer-right click- and at the bottom under Windows Activation it states Status: Not Available - Product ID: Not Available and NO place to enter a product key. Also all of the DOS commands that I can find on the Net do not seem to work either. When I contact Microsoft support they are no help at all and tell me I need to do a CLEAN install with the disk that came with my machine. The only problem is that no disk came with this machine. I have also been told by "Tech support" since I have an OEM key I just cannot use ANY install win 7 disk. I have a TON of Apps. loaded on this machine and it TICKS me off that I have a VALID OEM key and seemingly no way to enter or fix which I suspect is a Microsoft bug to begin with as they have overshot to prevent piracy. Someone Please help!

Answer:Win 7 Prof not genuine and cannot enter genuine OEM product key

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hello there.
I recently changed my settings for Windows Update, to let it check for updates, but now it always asks for a restart.
I tried almost every solution, i don't know what to do, i need SP1 for SQL Server 2012 to work, but it's not installing. I even downloaded the update from microsoft's website, but the installer fails.
I tried almost every method i found :
- setting it to never update, then setting it back to automatic
- deleting the registry keys from the Update-er
- deleting the files in SoftwareDistribution
- trying FixIt (normal and aggressive mode)
- trying the FixIt method manually
- renaming the edb.log file in the SoftwareDistribution folder via safe-mode.

I can't give you an error number, since it doesn't show one. It just asks for a restart, but nothing happens. I really need this fixed...

I wonder if anyone can help me. I've tried every other help solution, including online HP help and Microsoft help. HP support here in Indonesia said it would take up to 14 days to fix and I can't afford to lose my PC for that length of time,I have an HP laptop, model HP 14-R018BTU that came with Windows 8.1.The problem is that I upgraded to Windows 10 and now do not have wifi. I realize that this is a common problem, but as I said, HP online support were not able to solve it, and neither were Microsoft online support. It was so bad that I did a "factory reset" to Windows 8.1. i have been using windows 8 pro x64 with media center since around the time it was released and i took advantage of the upgrade offer, and up until about a week ago everything was running smoothly as expected. now in the past few days it says it needs activating and when i try to activate i get an error message, the control+alt+delete results in a delay of about 15-20 mins followed by an error message saying task manager wont open. i have not changed or added any hardware or my system configuration at all, apart from software.

i ran SFC scannow and it found and fixed some corrupt files but the symptoms still remain the same as described after a restart.
can anybody suggest possible fixes, or do i need to reinstall........................

I'm on 8.1 and have been avoiding updating ever since the huge Windows 10 controversy over privacy and telemetry and all that ****. But I think now, for the sake of security, I should probably think about installing some of the dozens, if not hundreds of updates, I've been ignoring. I'm gonna list all of them here. Could somebody please tell me which of them are safe to install and which might sneak Windows 10 onto my system?

On second thoughts, I won't LIST them ALL. I'll describe them. Quicker. I've got a security update for Silverlight, a definition update for Windows Defender, a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 11, a whole bunch of security updates for Adobe Flash Player, Microsoft .NET Framework, and Windows, a whole bunch of non-security updates for Windows, and the latest version of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Which of all of these updates are OK and which should I hide?

(I wonder if Windows falls under the definition of malicious software.)

Answer:Haven't Updated Windows In Months

All Windows Defender Definitions should be updated as soon as you get them. You can do that by opening Windows Defender and clicking on Update.
As for Windows 10 updates you are trying to avoid look here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/windows-10-trying-to-force-upgrade.295938/
Look at post #12 Earthling gives a list of updates that are connected to Windows 10 that you might not want to update.

transferred between physical RAM and storage.

The page fault refers to a particular block its address in Hex form.

Download a copy of memtest and burn the ISO to CDROM. You need to boot from the CD and give your memory a thorough test.

I'd also make sure that you are not overclocking your memory or system, as its 6 months old, you may still have warrantry. Sometimes memory errors can be cleared by removing and re-inserting memory modules.

I had Windows 8 Professional edition from ASDF India (Association of Software Developers & Faculties). They had provided a KMS Activated version, which after installation, activated Windows 8 automatically. Also to mention that it is a genuine copy, as I had a special password which was provided by them to log in and download windows 8. However, I was not provided any extra Keys.

After running smoothly for 8 months, today out-of-the-blue a message pops up saying Windows 8 is not activated. The error shows as follows :

Error : 0x8007232B
Description : DNS Name does not exist.

I tried to follow the steps mentioned in this Microsoft Help article Error 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B occurs when you try to activate Windows, but could not solve the error.

OK, I have exactly 2 days of working with Windows 10, but, after all these years of Windows and studying the OS, I feel I have earned the right to believe that I can see where MS has gone with 10 after this short time. BTW, I have never even booted a W8 PC, and all of my PCs are basically W7 Pro 64, other than a couple of XP Pro machines. I don't feel like I am biased, considering the upgrade is free, but here is what I would like to say:

All respect to all other opinions, but I have an opinion that is framed a little bit unusually. This is that I believe MS absolutely has accomplished one thing with W10. It is fully granny-proofed. I don't think granny will have a single complaint. IMO, this is a nice thing in a very important sense.

This looks 100% to me like a call to get out there and get mother and granny hooked up. It's Windows the granny edition, and I do like that aspect of the upgrade option.

This said, I would also like to say that I don't see the difference between this and Windows 7 under the wrapper, and I confess I don't know why MS would force anyone to upgrade who has W7. I really feel MS should add 5+ years to support for W7 for the sake of business machine owners who work on their PCs. Give IT time to learn everything there is to learn about W7 in corporate environments and give the OS a chance to pass the test of time. I think W7 can win and even with MS charging for it on new PCs. Make the W10 thing an option.

You need to look at the Enterprise version for business use rather than the Pro version. Never been quite sure myself just who the Pro version is intended for. With data you could turn off Bing and Cortana because that's how most of the stuff concerning YOU gets out, but that just leaves you in Google's tender hands. Fact of life - use the internet and your data will be gathered by someone.

As the topic says, my windows updates have been failing for the last eight months and I'm about to give up and do a fresh reinstall.  I'm hoping someone will have a suggestion for me, since I'd rather NOT have to go through the hassel of reinstalling everything. I'm fairly technical, but I'm at a complete loss. This all started back on July 2012 super Tuesday where all the updates downloaded and failed to install.  With each successive month of released updates, the list of failed gets longer and longer, the only exception being that the MSSE updates seem to go through with no problem.I've googled the heck out of the error code, but none of the fixes I found worked. I've tried the built-in updates troubleshooter, but it lies to me, tells me it fixed the issues, but the updates fail all the same. I've tried manually downloading the updates from their KB articles, but individually they fail to install.I'd love to hear if anyone has experienced this or has any ideas. Thanks!

I have XPpro SP2.

I have no idea what causes this but the whole boot seems to screw up in exact the same manner at roughly the exact same time causing me to go through the whole process again and again.

I do a fresh install. Thing srun fine for few months then I begin to get anomalous reboots on startup. This will happen once or twice then it becomes every single time I boot up. It gets to the splash screen then I hear that little click inside the computer indicating it's reset itself. After the 1st reset it seems fine for the rest of the day.

It will go on like this for a while before completely conking out. At some point it will usually stop booting up at all and give me various error messages saying the system files are corrupt. The only solution I've found so far is to nuke it and do a fresh install on new partition. As I havn't reached 'critical' stage yet I couldn't tell you the precise error messages it gives me once it fails to boot as I'm still in the reboot phase.

It baffles me why it happens in such a routine fashion at the same time and in the same way.

Also I forgot how to do it but how do you reinstall windows again over the top of your current one without losing your settings? I think with my version it won't let me do it cos the repair function doesn't work within windows which is why I always have to do a fresh one.

Answer:Windows xp screws up like clockwork after every 3 months after reinstall

Hi,

To do a fresh install over the top - as a multi boot, you install as normal and you should have the option to "Leave system intact (no changes)"
...Or create a new partition in the setup menu.

Is the version of Windows XP SP2 a legit windows CD or did you use a SP1 disk to create the SP2 disc?

If it happens every few month like clockwork, it doesnt seem to me that it has anything to do with hardware, otherwise it would happen everytime, fresh install or not. Does it do the same thing when no USB devices are connected, could it be a software update for one of your USB devices that comes after a couple months from install? Have you tried installing SP3 straight after installing SP2? Give these a try and let me know if you have already or the results :-)

Hello Guys,

Just thought I'd let you know that after my unsuccessful Window 8.1 update on the first day of release I have tried it again this week and this time it has gone really smoothly and I'm very impressed with it.

When I originally installed it it made my computer really slow and several previously installed programs had stopped working so I put a image of pre 8.0 install back on to my computer.

The only problem I have which is very small is that I have set a key on my mouse to show the desktop (minimise all windows), on Win 8 it would minimise everything and the 8GadgetPack sidebar would still be displayed, in 8.1 the sidebar is also minimised which is a little annoying. If I use the minimise all windows shortcut on keyboard (win key+M) it will do what I want but I can't set the button on my mouse to do that.

Also the second problem which I hope will be fixed with a gadget update is the Network gadget doesn't work and any new gadgets I add do not work, I think this is something to do with dpi scaling but I can wait for it to be rectified.
So all those of you who had trouble with the 8.1 upgrade, it might be worth another look at it.

Thanks

Tony

Microsoft's latest operating system Windows 7 has gone on sale in the UK almost three months ahead of schedule at massively reduces prices, it has emerged.
The software officially goes on sale to the general public on October 22, but Microsoft has released it early with prices starting from ?49.99 for Windows Premium.
Early buyers will be able to snap up Windows 7 for a limited pre-sale period and will save up to ?100 for the Premium package alone.

Microsoft announced early sales of its Windows 7 operating system, just days after Google announced it was releasing a rival product

Those who purchase Windows 7 Professional will pay ?99.99 instead of ?189.99.

A spokesperson for the company has said stocks are limited for the sale which runs from today until August 9.
But all UK versions of Windows 7 will not come with Internet Explorer, which means buyers must install a web browser to upgrade their computer's operating system.
Microsoft is currently in an ongoing legal battle with the EU which said that automatically installing Internet Explorer was anti-competitive to other browsers.
All sales of Microsoft 7 will be based on a first come first served basis, according to The Telegraph.

On top of that nothing is being released early, you are only pre-ordering you will not receive windows 7 until Oct 22 same as everyone else.

Hi ,

Sorry my thread title is quite bad, but my problem can only be described as "weird". For some reason, my laptop has turned crazy recently, the following basically:
I can't access the features from start menu (so can't launch apps, and can't turn off laptop normally.Half of the icons on my toolbar are missing.Using search function only searches the web (i.e. can't search for documents and stuff like control panel :/).Can't open some apps (e.g. any Microsoft Office apps, like PowerPoint- which is really inconvenient).

The list goes on and on, I have been using Windows 10 for around 2 months now, so I really have no clue as to why this problem occurred or how to fix it.

Thanks.

Probably not the wisest of ideas, but I was dealing with a family member with cancer. I just want to wipe it clean.  Any help with that process would be greatly appreciated. Please and thank you.

Answer:Infected with Cryptowall on Windows 8. Haven't turned it on in months

A repository of all current knowledge regarding CryptoWall, CryptoWall 2.0 & CryptoWall 3.0 is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this topic: CryptoWall and DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION Ransomware Information Guide and FAQCryptowall typically deletes (though not always) all Shadow Volume Copies with vssadmin.exe so that you cannot restore your files via System Restore or using a program like Shadow Explorer...but it never hurts to try in case the infection did not do what it was supposed to do. Another possible options is to try file recovery software such as R-Studio or Photorec to recover some of your original files but there is no guarantee that will work.At this time there is no fix tool and Decryption of any CryptoWall Files...is impossible since there is no way to retrieve the private key that can be used to decrypt your files without paying the ransom. The only other alternative is to save your data as is and wait for possible updates...meaning, what seems like an impossibility at the moment (decryption of your data) there is always hope someday there may be a breakthrough or possible solution so save the encrypted data and wait until that time. There are also ongoing discussions in these topics:CryptoWall - new variant of CryptoDefense Support & DiscussionCryptoWall 3.0 Support & DiscussionRather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in ... I have been using Windows 10 for an extended time, and have not dealt with any issue with BSODs so far. However, they started in the past week, and have been frequent. It appears to be a Bad_Stack_0x109 error, but I have no idea how to fix that. I have attached the zip file.

I can collect any more information if it is needed to help me fix my issue!

Thanks in advance!
William

Answer:Regular BSOD suddenly after using Windows 10 for multiple months

Only one of the dumps indicates a possible cause, all the rest show ANALYSIS_INCONCLUSIVE.

I see a BIOS update for FUJITSU LIFEBOOK E544 on the Fujitsu web site. Try updating the BIOS.

No Windows 10 specific drivers though.

I do see a lot of Windows 8.1 drivers. Try installing the Intel wireless driver from the web site since the one dump indicated a problem with Netwbw02.sys which is part of the Intel wireless driver. If no help install the Chipset driver.

If still no help, give Driver Verifier a try.

I got a new PC last July and all was great until 24 hours ago, I got chrome crashing ie not responing, IE 11 freezing, my mcafee security would appear to be running but could not access the settings. I then tried a reboot worked for a few minutes and then problem repeated. I then tried to sign out of my account and got a message MCAFEE vulnerability scanner was running please wait but I have that facility switched off. I assumed that was the problem and contacted Mcafee support and they were so bad I deleted Mcafee today and got kasperspy but tonight when priinting a document I got a BSOD and the message " clock watch .. timeout"
I did a quick search but no luck.

Hi guys,

I was wondering if you can help on my problem, I have tried doing the suggestions on most of the threads here but i still get the 0x124 error. I have tried and passed memtest86+ and prime95 as well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have also attached the files as instructed on BSOD - Posting Instructions.

Due to the system's age, first make sure that hardware is compatible with Windows 7: Windows 7 Compatibility: Software Programs & Hardware Devices: Find Updates, Drivers, & Downloads -> Download and run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor.

It appears you have an issue with the Microsoft Security Essentials installation.
Software Concerns:
Code:
Start Menu\Programs\Driver Detective
We do not recommend automated driver update software. It often finds drivers for devices similar to but not exactly the same as the hardware actually on the system. This can lead to conflicts and blue screen crashes. If you need help finding driver updates for a certain device, please start a thread in Drivers - Windows 7 Forums instead of using software. Driver updates are not always necessary and some updates can actually decrease system stability rather than increase it, so it is usually better not to update unless a device or its driver is causing problems with the system. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Analysis:BugCheck 0x116
This crash is DirectX/graphics card related. DirectX comes installed with Windows, so this may indicate Windows corruption. It may also be that you have corrupted drivers or a graphics card hardware problem.

Hello mate, If the HDD broke after 5 month is still under warranty and Lenovo will replace it. Otherwise did you create the recovery discs ?If not you'll have to buy them from Lenovo.

Hi there,
So Ive just noticed in the past week or so that my windows has been trying to update and has been failing for months and everything I've tried does nothing to fix the situation.  Anyone else ever have this problem? Help!  I also have the "not genuine windows" message popping up when in fact I am running genuine windows.

Answer:Failed windows updates for months "WindowsUpdate_800706F7" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

Hi rebecca2015, welcome to BleepingComputer About your "Windows isn't genuine" error message, did you try to manually re-enter the product key yet ? Like shown here:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/genuine/product-key#T1=tab01

Hello.

Ok, here is the problem. In the past 5 months for these reasons I've had to either emergency repair, HD partition whipe, or install over it:

Tried installing some of the networking software that isn't with the standard install.

Once while installing a screensaver.

Once after I tried to reboot after installing an update to OS.

All of these resulted in hanging of startup and cause me to do one of the three things above. Anybody got any possible reasons why this would happen?

One more thing, I need a replacement for Cnet's Catchup service. Anybody know of any?

Thank You.

Hello,
I just want' a clear answer if there is one.
How to make DisplayPort work on (OEM) Win 7 Pro/x64, HP Probook 6470b.

Here is the situation: I don't want 3 displays... heck I just want one to work via Displayport - it did for 5 months...
Situation:
1. i needed external display (only DVI-D Monitor available) .
2. i got DisplayPort to DVI-D cable: DisplayPort hooked to DVI-D input of SamsungSyncmaster 245B worked great!
(up to 1920x1080: no problem: closed the lid an auto.got 1920x1080 on external monitor):
3. I took laptop and hooked it to TV: DisplayPort->HDMI: no problems...
4. One day it "decided" to stop working... and I don't think the DisplayPort is broken: something else is (according to all troubles people go through I would say I was very lucky to get away with this: e.i. getting the pisture from DisplayPort..) - in fact it's not broken: when tested on Ubuntu it works, so HW is ok.
5. I reinstalled intelHD 4000 drivers to new ones (v.dec2014) - even though the things worked with old one (v.jul2013), going to restore points,...
6. Tried...well almost all there is to be found on internet (where else?) - nothing works, though DisplayPort works with no problem on ubuntu (makes you think...doesn't it?)
7. Tried DisplayPort to VGA^ - vga monitor not even detected, nothing... as with dvi monitors, or hdmi (TV)
(^ which works perfectly (i'm "lucky" i guess) on other laptop (yes, hp proobook just year or two older than the one in question: with ... Read more

Answer:Displayport not detected in windows 7 - stopped working after 6 months

Anyone?

Displayport? How to check it... if it's installed ok etc?

Btw: anyone knows any good USB to HDMI/DVI-D adapter (at reasonable price)?

Thanks!
