Can't install updates using windows update or standalone update

Question: Can't install updates using windows update or standalone update

I haven't been able to install any updates since jan 11 of this year. I have been on the road for a few weeks and I tried to figure out the problem once I got back.

When a update is being installed it will stall we will say at 95%. I have looked in the log files and this is what I find.

When I try to run sfc /now or verify only I get this error;

I am stumped so any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Can't install updates using windows update or standalone update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't install updates using windows update or standalone update

Try running the System Updates Readiness Tool.

This is the link for the 64-bit version: Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

Answer:Windows Update does not work, Windows Standalone Update Installer stops with error 0xc8000247 (Windows 7 Home Premium on Acer Aspire 1810TZ notebook)

Got it !!!!
If You are using notebooks with with hard drive larger than 700 GB you probably should update Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver.
Here is solution :
Download and install it.

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3
Vista SP2
I don't know how to obtain CheckSUR.log.

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:
Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.
You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... Hello Everyone,

I did a clean install and on first use of Windows update the updates for some reason we're downloading and installing at a slow pace which I didn't recall in the past. Not sure if I'm having an issue on my end or not if it is on the side of Microsoft. Any fixes or solutions you might recommend I would appreciate it. Here is some nfo below.

Answer:After clean install, windows update slow to download install updates

I always keep the current cumulative update off line installer on hand and install it before going online. Also remember it is not just Windows updates you are also getting STORE updates in the background.

I've never really had an issue with an update, that is until the KB3004394 issue. During that time, I fought with my system quite hard and eventually uninstalled that update. However, I appear to have damaged something else in the process, as I am now unable to install certain windows updates.

Updates that will not install:
KB2506143 fails with 800B0100
KB3013126 fails with 800B0100
KB3014406 fails with 800B0100

The system update readiness checker does not complain. Windows resource protection spits out: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I zip'd the cab and the txt files separately as together it was over the limit.

Please help!

I am a PC Tech that work on multiple computers daily. A few months ago I was looking for an offline/standalone update for 8.1. As many have found out it was not available anywhere except the Windows Store.

I now have an offline/standalone copy of the Windows 8.1 update and I would love to share it with everyone. I come here often and always find the answers I need and I finally have a chance to give back to the community. It is a little over 6GB and fits on Dual Layer DVD. The reason it is so large is because it it for x64, x86, & ARM all on one disc. It has a small batch file that auto-detects your processor type and installs the required files for the 8.1 update.

What I am looking for is the best part of the forum to share this in, and the best place to host such a large file from.

Hello Curtis, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Thank you for your offer, but it would be illegal to do so since distributing the update file like that would violate Microsoft's copyright and EULA.

Check if they are in the add/remove programs applet. If so, remove then and reboot. Then try to install them one at a time: after the first, reboot and then go for the next. Do them in order of age.

Does anyone know how to solve this so updates will install?

It might be a bit tedious but try installing them one by one and see where it get's stuck. Jump over it and try that same one later.

I partitioned my hard drive and installed Windows 2k on the second partition in addition to WinXP. This caused the XP bootloader to get overwriten with the Win2000 bootloader. I did a restore with the XP disk, fixing that problem. Unfortunately, this rolled my .NET back to v1, which after a bit of dll trickery, I was able to get it back to v3. However, now Windows Update can't install updates! It will download them, but when it tries to install them it fails.

The only help I can get out of the program is "winupdate failed be because of a problem with your computer."

Any ideas guys?

Hi. I'm new here and see a forum about windows updates not being installed. I have the same problem but that thread didn't help me at all to fix the problem.

I have tried to install Windows Installer but will get this message when I try to install it.. " Not enough storage is available to process this command."

I've tried these commands and the first one

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll says The module failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.

There are 3 that will not update and haven't for a week. Yes I've been trying and searching that long!!!

#3 Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB974234)

Answer:Windows Update will not install updates!

You mention:

" Not enough storage is available to process this command."

Have you actualy checked there is enough space on the drive, I am unsure how much space is needed, but this could be an issue.

Also make sure you dont have any external drives connected when running the update.

Does MS Update give you any KB numbers or error codes?

any suggestions?

This laptop runs Vista home Premium 32-Bit SP2 (no mention of SPs in the installed program list so I imagine it was pre-installed).

Basically I noticed that there were 5 Important and 1 Optional Windows updates that would claim to install successfully, but never disappear from the list. Also they don't appear to Actually install at all as there's no sign of them in the Installed Updates list within Programs and Features (interestingly, other than Office, .Net and Works updates I don't see Any updates listed for Windows itself). There are no other noticeable problems with the computer.

Specifically the updates are:

I've recently repaired my OS (yes, as in repaired in boot setup via the CD...) and now Windows Update doesn't seem to work anymore!

Automatic Updates or manual updates, it doesn't seem to make a difference, I have downloaded all the critical/high priority updates from Microsoft Update, but every time I try to install them, the message reads simply 'Some of the updates could not be installed' (ie: ALL of them! - see attached images)

I've scoured Microsoft Update for ANY form of help for this, to no avail, there is no apparent error code to reference! Microsoft Update worked fine, until I experiecned an error with 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services' on shutdown last month, which was rectified by the repair...

Any thoughts?...

I just want to upgrade to Windows 8.1(which I can't aswell but I think the reason why, is Windows Update). My last chance is reinstalling Windows but I would like to solve this with different option. I have had many update problems with windows update (including windows vista sp1) due to "Code 80070246." I have tried many things (not including reinstalling OS)...including
Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"

However when i tried following those steps, i got to step 6 and the Windows AIK Command Prompt said it "cannot find the path specified." I'm pretty sure i have the same error as that one though, meaning a corrupted GlobalInstallOrder.xml file. I don't think it can find that file because I'm using a 64-bit system. Should i try doing the same thing as the microsoft site except replace Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990 with Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_63473ad082bcdac6 or do i have to do something else?

Maybe the problem isn't with GlobalInstallOrder.xml? I'm not really sure what to do.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium x64, if it helps.

I am using self build PC with windows 7 Professional, SP1. It's always had a few gremlins, mostly to do with the windows installation, but I have increasingly been having issues with it which I am at my technical limits to resolve.

Currently, I have a number of windows updates which simply will not install.

I tried running the Windows Update troubleshooter - without success.
I tried a clean boot, having downloaded all 4 updates directly from Microsoft and installing. I thought that had fixed it, but lo and behold, the same 4 updates show as needing to be installed again.
Windows update readiness tool - just doesn't seem to complete the process. Starts, then stops and does nothing indefinitely.
At some point, and I can't even remember why now, after some digging online, I tried re installing the .NET framework about 5 times.
Again for a reason I can't now remember, I did a complete driver clean up on my Nvidia graphics card.
I created a bootable USB (my DVD drive is temperamental) to try and do an upgrade install. It won't allow me to, only a clean install.
I wanted to try and remove SP1 an re-install, but when I go to "installed updates", absolutely nothing shows.
I've buggered around with SFC iterations in the CMD prompt, without success.

I am loathed to do a clean install, but it is looking increasingly like that might be my only option unless someone can suggest someway to resolve this?

I am here because of the final reply I received to this post:

Windows update settings and other questions

I cannot get WU to behave properly. At one point it quit checking my machine for needed updates. I carefully reset it to the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." and now when I shut down I am told "please wait for update 1 of 1 to install.

I ran SFC scannow and encountered no errors.

I will attempt to attach the CBS log zip file

Last night another update installed 'automatically.' This morning when I first booted I had great difficulty gaining control of my machine. I hit a black screen for a while. I can't recall all that I tried but eventually I got to a screen where I could shut down properly and when I rebooted the system ran 'normally.'

I would still like to be able to research an update before I install it, at least know what it might be doing.

Hi all,

Running Win 7 Home Premium (SP1) 64 bit.
I always downloaded and installed the Windows updates for my computer without problems. However, a few days ago, after I downloaded and installed 14 updates, my Windows Explorer started to act very odd: for example, I was not able to copy / paste the files using right click. Immediately, I used the restore point created before the updates => the Windows Explorer issue was solved and the computer seemed to return to normal.
But now, although the Windows Update screen shows the 14 updates as downloaded, when I click on "Install", the green indicator goes left and right for hours, but the installation doesn't happen.
I looked for solution online and I tried the following resources without success:

- FixIt tool: it gets stuck in the "Checking for Updates" screen.

- Run Malwarebytes, Lavasoft, Spybot: all clear.

- => I tried to apply the "Most Helpful Reply" (by miluethi) =>
1. Run services.msc
2. Stop service Windows-Update
3. Delete folder content of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\
4. Start service Windows-Update again
5. Run Windows Update
I was not able to Stop the Windows Update service (I got the 1053 error)

- Run registry cleanup.

- Tried all the processes disabling Norton.

I will appreciate any help.
Thank you in advance,

Found something that worked. Removed folders related to updates in C:\windows\softwaredistribution . WU went off without a hitch. Don't see a way to remove the thread. You may delete/lock this if you wish. Thanks anyways.

Thanks for your time. For some time now, Vista (64-bit) has not been able to install two updates on my computer, specifically KB943899 and 943411. The two always fail. Other updates that appear will come along and install fine, leaving these two as fails everytime. The code in Window's Update is 800736CC. I click "Get Help" and see nothing helpful.

I moved onto trying stand alone updates and they fail as well. Once downloaded, I run them, and get "wusa.exe - Bad Image C:\Windows\system31\wuapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support" followed by "Installer encountered an error: 0x800700c1 %1 is not a valid Win32 application". This is the same error for both WUs.

Did a little looking around, haven't seen anything at seems to match my problem exaclty. Did see some people with the same error message under Windows XP who were asked to Run sfc /purgecache and sfc /scannow. Did both, sfc /scannow results in a few minutes of scanning then the window closes at 100% with no information, I assume it had no problems to report.

Answer:Windows Update unable to install two updates.

1) Go to your "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder. You should see
a bunch of folders with random looking names

2) Look in each of these folders until you find one that has a .cab file
with a name that contains the update number that failed (i.e. or something similar). If you can't find
the cab file there should be some other file in the folder that indicates its

3) Backup then delete the entire folder (the one with the random looking
name) that contains that cab file

4) Repeat for each of the updates that are failing for you

5) You might have to reboot at this point but I didn't have to

6) Either wait for the updater to notify you or manually check for updates

7) The updates should be available for download again

8) Let the updater download and apply the previously failed updates and it

Hi I'm running windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit OS and I installed this as an OEM product that I got from eBay. When I first installed the Windows back in March of this year, I could download and install all updates. But since then I can't download and/or install any updates which keeps me worried about my computer's overall condition that might get BSODs and other errors. I ran sfc scan and found no problems. I ran the windows update readiness tool, but it didn't install that update either!! I don't get any errors but I can send you the CBS logs that has text file because the other zipped files are very large files (around 12 MB each) that I can't upload in here. So I attached the CBS text file at the bottom. Please tell me how to fix this problem or connect me with remote network connection if you can so I can resolve this issue as it's very important that my computer can download and install updates, thank you.

Hi - am hoping someone will be able to assist as I'm at my wits end!

For quite some time now my windows update returns an error when it tries to install updates. I have tried everything I can think of, including:

* Ensuring there are zero registry errors by using RegistryFix, version 5.5
* Running the usual spyware progs - spybot, ccleaner, etc. All clean, big thumbs up.
* Ensuring relevant registry entries have access defined to the SYSTEM user.

Microsoft told me that, basically, I couldn't have this issue as they'd not heard of it. But I do, I really do.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32 bit.

Yesterday I tried installing the twelve important updates that had appeared for my computer. Nine installed and three got errors (KB2925418, KB2929733 & KB2929961, all failed with error code 80242016). I did the restart anyway and got the BSOD. The PC was recovered using the startup repair tool.

This morning WU still showed 12 updates to be done so I tried again. This time it installed 9 updates and ignored the other 3. The restart worked fine. WU now showed only three updates left. I tried installing KB2929733 & KB 2929961 again. No errors appeared until after the restart and I got the BSOD again. After several attempts the PC rebooted successfully using a previous restore point.

Now the installed updates shows a list of successful updates (and a long list of failed ones) but the successful ones still appear in the list to be installed. These are KB890830, KB2837594, KB2863818, KB2878225 & KB2878227).

SURT was run without errors as was sfc.

Any suggestions on how to get WU to match up its list of what needs to be installed with what is installed?

If the installation is interrupted for any reason, you can restart the update from where you left off by going back to the Store and downloading the update again.

To see the update to Windows 8.1 in the Store, your PC needs to have updates KB 2871389 and KB 2917499 installed.

Some editions of Windows 8 don?t support updating to Windows 8.1 from the Store, including Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows 8 Pro (if installed using volume licensing or activated using a Multiple Activation Key), and preview versions of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
Those listed updates in this note are not installed nor in the update list to install?
how can i tell if mine is a compatable version?

I did a repair install of XP, and I thought that after that I would see tons of windows updates to install (because apparently the repair install reverts you?) But I checked windows updates and I don't see any - it says the windows is totally up to date. (Well, I did see a couple drivers, but nothing beyond that.)
Is this ok, or do I have to manually apply some updates or something? Computer properties says SP3 even though the xp cd I used for the repair install was an sp2 cd.

Answer:After a repair install, is it ok if windows update has no updates?

Yes, Windows XP disks are confusing. The disks are so poorly worded and put together that many accidently press R and drop to console or do a destructive install when they wanted to do a non-destructive install. Recovery console is typically used to repair things that can't be fixed any other way such as fixmbr, fixboot, edit a config file, diskpart. However, in recovery console you can initiate a system restore from a restore point through the recovery console by using the command %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe will repair the pc from an earlier date.
After pressing enter and pressing F8 for the agreement you get to the window you need to be on. From there is the big decision to do a destructive install or try a R for repair install, which generally should only reinstall windows OS and leave everything intact. If there isn't a R option on that page then the disk itself doesn't have that option or, the OS is completely destroyed and it can't even detect a windows OS installed. That might be due to a MBR corruption of some sort. Which is the reason to have a recovery console to try to repair issue's like that.
Sometimes the disk will complain that what's installed differs from the disk. Generally you want to use the same disk that was used to originally install the OS. You can sometimes get around this using a disk that matches the OS. Since it's a non-destrcutive reinstall in theory it shouldn't touch the sp2 or the sp3. It should only replace the cor... I just downloaded 102 updates for Windows and Office it is approximately 600MB and above. After downloading, some updates maybe, 23 failed to install and 3 were said to be not needed. And I restarted my PC, after restarting, Windows Update prompts me to install the remaining updates which is not installed for the first time. Then It installs the 90% then restarts the machine, after restarting the remaining not installed updates installs successfully. What maybe the cause of that problem?

I keep getting the "NTVDM CPU has encountered and illegal instruction" every time windows update tries to run (wuauclt.exe) and updates won't install. This started after the new Windows UPdate Agent was installed around 6/14. No updates have installed since then, I just get the popup errors. Windows update stopped working after I restored the OS to the factory setup (using the built in one key recovery button). Windows appears to be working fine, but I cannot seem to install any updates (manually or through windows update).

Trying to install SP1 (for example) from the internet gives the error "Error_Install_Failure(0x80070643)".

Trying to update using windows update yields the following:
"To check for updates you must first install an update for windows update"
When I press "Install now", It tries to install this update, and comes back with the error "Windows could not search for new updates Code 80070643"

- I have tried using the Microsoft fixit related to this code, and the suggestions on the following two threads:

I am attempting to install a fresh Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64 (Retail) virtual machine. When switching to Audit Mode to attempt to install drivers and updates before setting up the final users (the way I normally do), I find that Windows update gets stuck forever (apparently) at "Checking for Updates..." after the single update to the new Windows Update. I have also tried this without going through the Audit Mode on a separate fresh install, I had the exact same issue, so I do not believe that was the cause.

I am struggling to make my windows update run properly.
There are 3 important updates that I cant make it work, they are:
1- 2 of them concerning .NET framework 4 (KB2742595 and KB2789642)
2- Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

For the .NET framework 4 updates: windows actually do update them and says they are sucessfully updated, but when I check for updates again, they are still there. The SP1 is a little different, it does install normally, but when PC logs off to continue installation, it never goes through 14%. Then it restarts, says failure and it rolls back, aborting the update, so when I check windows updates again, if shows SP1 failure, error 0x80071a90.
I've tried many different things, like manual update, safe mode or clean startup config, none work.
Also, I downloaded SURT and installed it, but it seems nothing really happened.
Following Windows Update Posting Instructions
1- installed SURT, but seems nothing happened
2- SFC scan is normal; error-checking tool is also ok.
3- No errors appear on that screen. I will only find the error code for SP1 if I click on "View update history"

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I just found out that when I open 'msconfig' , there are many services stopped, including many microsoft ones. If I try to enable then and restart my PC, simply nothing happens, they keep stopped.

I tryed to manually start them through 'services.msc', some of them start to work, like 'Vaio Event Service' which enables my Fn key, but when I restart, every alteration made is undone ( I quickly notice this when I try to use Fn key in attempt to raise/lower the volume, after I restart).

I thought of virus/malware could possibly doing so, so I ran MSE,adwcleaner, spybot but the errors remain. Any suggestions please?

Hi. Because I recently formatted my computer's hard drive, I have had to go online and redownload all of the critical and other windows updates for my Windows XP Pro computer. When I first started to download the updates, I had 19 Critical Updates to download. Now I think I have 10 or something like that. Well, these last 10 or whatever absolutely refuse to install! They are apparently downloaded though because I attempt to redownload them and they "download" at speeds way faster than what dialup is capable of. Well, then it proceeds to install the updates. However, every single update fails. During the attempted installation of these updates by Windows Update, my computer accesses the floppy drive for some unkown reason. It does this only once or twice. I believe that during these downloads I am running programs such as Norton Internet Security 2002 (but I don't know why this would affect it because my other downloads completed fine with this and the rest of the programs mentioned here running). I was also running Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger (I think), Kazaa Lite (I think), and Norton Antivirus 2002 (with Autoprotect enabled). I'm at my wits end with this. . I have asked about this problem before directly reporting the issue to Microsoft (Surprise surprise... NO RESPONSE. I'd get a better response from a brick wall). Seriously not happy; considering cutting my losses and reverting (AS I STILL HAVE MY INSTALL DISCS) to Windows 7 or moving to Linux. Way to go to p**s off users!

Answer:Windows Updates fail to install an already installed update error???

Problem solved. Used the Microsoft Show/Hide Updates Troubleshooter tool. Why did I have to go looking for this? This is a useful part of Windows functionality... What were they thinking of removing it. then hiding the tool? (Rhetorical questions; I know why. Thank you Nanny Microsoft, but I'm a better programmer than most of your shiftless lot)

Greetings, new to the forum. I apologize in advance as I'm sure this topic has been posted before, but didn't find anything that addressed this formally...

So, the idea is that my company has a ton of desktops, connected to a domain, most of which do not have over 2gigs of RAM on them. When said desktops are booting up, Windows is checking for updates, utilizing as much as a gig and a half of said RAM, which is causing these machines to slow down to the point of being largely unusable. What I'd like to do is disable winupdate to automatically start up, then have user's run it themselves, maybe on a Friday before they leave or something. I want to set this up so there's as little for them to do as possible - many of them are not technological. In other words, windows would check for updates, install the updates, restart, etc. without any prompting from the user. Any suggestions as to how to best go about this?

Thanks in advance. Toffer.

Hi all,
I head to this section on advise by a Moderator from the Virus/trojan/Spyware Help section.
After cleaning the machine from a rootkit I have this issue:
I removed and then reinstalled SP3 (twice) and after downoading the updates now my pc prompts me to install updates that appear to be already in the system.
The last update haunting me is KB2633952 (before it was KB981793).
After every reboot I have the yellow update icon on the toolbar (down on the left, close to the clock). If start the installation procedure it ends telling me it is impossible to install. I tried to download it directly from Microsoft download center and the result is an installation error: "update cannot be installed as a newer or same timezone has already been installed on the System".
If I search the system I find the update in these directories:
1) C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
2) C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\be9e26e54f7a2d73396715001d0e1e17\update
3) C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.old\be9e26e54f7a2d73396715001d0e1e17\update

Please note that the system now appears to be cleared from malware.

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows update prompting to install updates already installed

Go to Control Panel/Date and Time make sure that your computer is in the Right time zone for your area, and the check box for automatically update for Daylight Savings time is checked. Then go to the Internet Time tab and update your time to the current time. then you can try the Update again.

I'm having problems with Yahoo redirecting to adware sites. Have run AVG and Trend Micro Housecall scans with little or no results but am still having the issue. I'm trying to update Spybot and install AdAware but am getting errors when it tries to go through the install process. I'm also unable to install Windows Update updates; it comes up with error code 80072EFE.

For some reason I can't get RootRepeal to finish, but I've attached everything else.

I installed Windows 7 on a Vista laptop using a manufacturer disk.

After that it installed few updates, including SP1. Latest one was the update client (an older one, the kb ending in 810 I think) and searching for updates would take forever. So I installed the new client (ending in 812) and it found almost 200 updates.

Now I am starting to install these one by one, some of them I also hide.

I install one update, restart, Win7 starts searching for updates.
I hide one update, Win7 starts searching for updates.

Is this normal? Why does it start searching by itself after I install or hide an update?

Basically my old HDD died from bad sectors and I had to format and install Windows 7 Enterprise on a back up hdd that was flooded with useless documents from the past.

Went ahead done what I had to do and left Windows to check for updates, Steam install some games and League of Legends update.

However everything finished but Windows was still checking for updates and I noticed the svchost.exe (netsvcs one) uses about 1.5 GB out of 4 RAM. Immediately knew that this was caused by the Windows Update service that's under it.

However turning Windows Update off is never a smart thing to do and I don't have the kind of time to manually download updates.

I know that it will probably blast me with 200+ updates (has happened in the past but never used up so much RAM and finished way faster than 6 hours with all my usual post installation stuff.

Anyways some info you should probably know:
-I'm using a Wireless adapter (TP-LINK TL-WN722N) and I have read threads here that Windows Update would sometimes fail to do what it should with Wireless adapters, unfortunatelly that isn't an option at the moment.
-Resetting Windows Update manually and through Fix It doesn't work.

So first thing I'm looking at is updating the Windows Update client, please do tell if you think otherwise, or if not link me to the newest Windows update client or probbably any hotfixes that could fix the problem (never done this before and wouldn't want to mess up, so I decided to ask you guys )

I just installed Windows 7, installed the drivers from my Toshiba thread from yesterday, Installed AVG, and have been trying to get all the lasted updates since yesterday. So far I have none. I go to Control Panel and click Windows Update and I was presented with a red X saying check for updates for your computer and it sits and sits and sits, I shut down and tried several times. I performed a clean boot and still going on 6 hours with "Checking for updates" and with still nothing installed. even on a clean boot. I have been trying for a total of 12 hours now. All I managed to get is the System Update Readiness Tool installed. but no updates except one that was on the install media from 2010.

I've been running XP on my machine for several years and the latest reinstall went very smoothly until I updated my bios. It may be unrelated to updating my bios but this seems to be the only change I had made at the time. It prevented a lot of applications from running, from Windows Live Messenger, to various games e.t.c.

I assumed it was to do with my bios, so I pulled the battery out of the motherboard (also shorted the 3 pin switch thing). This didn't seem to make any difference.

I recently installed Windows 7 (x86) on the same hard drive and partition, expecting this to cure the problem and start fresh, however Windows 7 seems to be having a similar problem in that I get errors on Windows Update (8007065E,800B0100 and 80070003). I've tried manually installing some of the failed updates too and just get a "failed" message.

This makes me assume that it's either still a problem with the bios, or perhaps with my hard drive.

Does anyone know of any software I can use to perhaps scan for issues with the hard drive, or with the bios?

Answer:Solved: Windows Update won't install some updates (XP or Windows 7 on same machine)

Well, after trying all the fixes available on the internet for those particular error codes to no avail, I ran Kill Disk on the partition, re-installed Windows 7 and it appears to be running smoothly, with all service packs and updates installing fine

So here is my problem, I reinstalled my windows 7 ultimate x64 using the fresh backup I did the day I bought my laptop.

So the installation was done without any issue and everything seems to be working fine apart of Windows Update. When I launch the update, Windows Update just keep looking for updates withtout finding nothing and then after a long time, it show an error msg, I got two different for the moment : 8024400a and 8024402F
I have attached the CBS logs if someone can have a look.

Thank you in advance.

About a month ago, I used the built-in Windows 10 recovery method to reinstall Windows 10. I still had a few glitches from my original Windows 7 installation, and these have been resolved by the reinstall.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that I'm getting an error message whenever I try to install the definition update for Windows Defender:

Definitie-update voor Windows Defender - KB2267602 (definitie 1.215.1024.0) - Fout 0x80070643

I already tried sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything that required fixing. I also tried MicrosoftFixit.msi and NetFxRepairTool.exe, because Googling the error message brought me the news that it was related to the .NET framework.

To be clear: I don't use Windows Defender right now. I got Norton Security installed and it serves me well. I know some people consider it a resource hog, but I've tried Avira as a recommendation by Tom's Guide and it was even worse. My Norton still lasts over 200 days so I have plenty of time if I want to replace it by then. However, I do want Windows to be fully updated, and not having that update finished just stands out like a red ship in a sea of white.

I've considered that this error might be because of Norton, but I didn't have issues before resetting Windows, so I don't see why it would be Norton that suddenly throws a fit about it.

How do I fix this?

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.
I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.
Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :
Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.
Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.
Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.
Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.
Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.
Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.
Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

Hello all,I have a T60p that I have just reinstalled windows XP on and I am having trouble with the ThinkVantage System Update software.  Every time I run it, it give me "System is up to date." and "No packages applicable to your system were found."  Now, I know that the system is indeed not up to date b/c I don't have most of the drivers (bluetooth/wireless/ect) and none of the nicer software (power management and such).  In the past when I would reinstall windows I could just start up the system update and it would install pretty much everything that I needed pretty quickly.  Just some other infos: windows is completely updated (XP SP3) and I also went ahead and updated the bios to 1.15 just to see if that would work but I am still having a problem.  If anyone has any ideas, I would be most appreciative.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help

You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.

1. I've been having problems with Windows Update for a while. I've spent hours going through forums attempting to solve my problem, but no luck. Whenever I reboot my computer, a Windows Update balloon pops up and says "Windows cannot install updates". When I try to search for updates, I get error 80080005: Windows encountered an unknown error. It may have something to do with the Background Intelligence Transfer Service...but when I try to Start the service (set on Automatic Delayed) it gives me error 87: parameters are incorrect. I've also had update problems with Windows Defender, but somehow yesterday I was able to manually install definition updates from the Microsoft website. 2. iTunes. I can't install updates to iTunes software. It always gets near the end, then says an error occurred. It attempts to install again, with the same result. The Apple forums say that the solution should be to download "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update"... but that won't install either - I get this: "An error occurred during the instaallation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT, version = "8.0.50727.4053", type = "win32", publicKeyToken = "1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitecture = "x86". I am looking for a script to disable the annoying Windows Update notification.
For a single PC I can go ahead and turn the message off in the Action Center.
Any help with registry edit?
