Windows Update is not loading updates

Question: Windows Update is not loading updates

Hi,
I have just upgrade my operating system from Vista to Windows 7.

I am finding that Windows Update is not loading any updates. It just seems to hang. All the computer is saying is "Downloading Updates" and every thing stays at 0%.

Updates worked fine with Vista.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Windows Update is not loading updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows Update is not loading updates

Hi thermite, welcome to the forums

How long have you kept it at the 'Downloading' stage? I have noticed that depending on some updates I have experienced an extended 0% stage but after a while it began at well above 30%.

hello - xp sp2--- in past after opening Windows Update via Tools/Update, i could view my Update History page option and
view what is currently showing as updated i.e. on my computer by clicking on that ''Option ('View Update History)
..... suddenly today, that 'feature' is not working - tried everything recommended on the 'site' ..i.e. .added site to pop-blocker/low blockage setting; (never a problem before today).. it tries to 'load' that page - i see it 'flash' briefly then disappear with another page appearing stating there was a problem accessing my personal 'update history' (or whatever the language was - don't remember totally + showing error ox800A138F)
today i downloaded & installed the NeT recommended update (restarted computer) and i think it was after that was completed that i tried to view the link for 'history of updates' -without success.
I read ''FAQ'' and did what i wrote above ... HELP! thanks - Edythe
PS: under Security - my NET is showing as 'prompt'
i haven't a 'clue' what that 'feature' does -but i kept getting reminders to do that update, so i did ! LOL I even tried a
virus scan - no problems - how 'important' is it that i 'view' what is updated in my machine anyway?

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Hi there.

I've tried everything to fix my Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and I can't seem to work out what to do anymore.

My laptop automatically did some updates earlier today and I rebooted as advised, unfortunately it failed to load up at all and I got a screen telling me windows has failed to start. Problem could be due to a recent change of hardware or software. The only recent change being the updates. I've tried to do a system repair, which hasn't worked. All it does is load a blank screen with, eventually a movable mouse cursor, nothing else happens after. I've tried to load from the boot cd also, but I have the same problem. The white bar loads, message saying windows is loading files then as soon as its passed the blank screen and mouse cursor come up. I can't load anything in safe mode as it just comes up with the windows failed to start message. I'm at a loss, I think. And if I can't reinstall windows then it looks like my laptop is messed up completely. All I haven't tried is perhaps loading safe mode with command prompt and trying to do a system restore, and Repair Install For Vista this, which I'm not quite sure I understand fully. I might have had SP1 installed already.

Anyone got anything they can chuck my way to advise me to do? I haven't had the laptop all THAT long.

Answer:Windows not loading due to updates

Do you have any critical date on your drive? You could try booting to safe mode or using Knoppix to retrieve you data. It looks like you are going to need a clean install.

I have a laptop pre loaded with Vista Home Premium 32-bit Service Pack 2 (build 6002).
I have had help from Virus/Trojan/Spyware section of the forum to remove a virus & Trojan causing the system to give .exe - bad image errors. These messages have been fixed via combofix & an anti-malware program.
I have uninstalled Java (TM)SE Runtime Environment 6, leaving Java (TM)6 Update 17.
My problem now is each time I logon I get the message - configuring stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete but then windows opens after a minute. When logging off each time - message do not turn computer off, configuring updates.

I tried restarting the computer with f8, chose option repair computer, system restore option; then run as administrator. I then get the message account has been disabled & I can't proceed any further.

Hope I have supplied enough information for you to help me

Answer:Windows updates not loading

Try to activate the Vista hidden admin account -

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs - select run as admin. Then type

Code:

net user administrator /active:yes

Logoff your account and the user account named Administrator will be waiting for you at the logon screen.

Hi -- I have looked at your very detailed description of what I'm supposed to do as I post about my problems with Windows Updates, but I am worried about Step 2, the SFC scan. Am I right that I may have to source a Windows installation disk before running step 2 in case something needs fixing?

The up-shot of my issue is this: I run an Asus K53E laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. I have Service Pack 1. I run Norton 360 Premier because we got a license for all the machines in the house. I also manually run Malwarebytes, and recently downloaded the Malicious Software Tool from Microsoft which found nothing in a quick scan.

I have had problems with failed updates over the years, most of which seem to have eventually loaded. A lot of those that aren't loading, pertain to Internet Explorer versions that are newer than mine (I have IE 8, and if I don't have to update that, I don't really want to).

I admit I've been a bit of an ostrich about this, sticking my head in the sand. If the machine still functions, then that stuff in the background isn't really of interest to me (since most of it was about IE 9 or 10).Now, though I get 16 updates that refuse to load (they say they're downloaded, but they won't install). I can't get the updated Windows updater to install either.

I have clicked to update the installer, but it won't do it. I have run various fix it programmes which say everything is ok. The automated troubleshooter said some programs couldn't update, and I couldn't eve... Read more

In the SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker tutorial, checking for corrupted files shouldn't need an installation disk, but you do need to elevate the command prompt.

but do I need to make a back-up first?

Generally updates will create a restore point automatically, but I always create one even if I'm just messing around with icons or colors, as it's a great way to reset your issues

If no files appear to be corrupted, and have followed step one already, then as stated in the tutorial, you'll want to grab the logs and zip them so some of the experts can comb through the fine print.

It sounds like you've used a lot of third party software over time to solve an issue, but sometimes that can cause even more issues and leads to more and more as you try different software, not to mention actually altering sensitive files and folders, as one tiny punctuation point or letter can change the whole system. I would suggest running through the help tutorial one more time to the letter and post the logs, if there seems to be no fix, then we'll coach you through a clean install (at least that's what I would do or at least an image recovery)

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

There were 13 Important Updates this week from Microsoft. After installing them my system would not boot up. I had to run system restore to remove these before solving the problem. I have read that Windows 8.1 has this problem, listing two patches (KB2982791 & KB2975719). These are not listed on the list for Windows 7 x64. I do know the culprit must be in the "Update For Windows 7 x64 based systems as I reloaded those only (There are 4) with the same results. Anyone know which one(s) are the culprits? Update: Noticed KB2982791 is listed under "Security Update for Windows 7" but that can't be the only update that is causing the problem!

Answer:No boot after loading August Windows updates

As of the morning of August 17th Windows has revised the August updates and removed KB2982791 & KB2970228. I reloaded all the others and have had no problems. Note: When I first loaded all of the original updates computer did not have any trouble rebooting for the final install of those updates. It's when you power off for the first time after installing that the computer was unable to re-boot!

I'm having a couple problems and I don't know if they are related or not.

The first thing I noticed is that IE takes about 5 minutes to execute the program. Once it opens, it appears to run normally but if you open a new tab or window, it repeats the 5 minute wait.

Firefox seems to be running just fine, so I don't think it's my connection.

The other thing is that I have a Windows Update that won't load. It's trying to load Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. Once it fails it lists two Security Updates.
Security Update for Windows XP (KB917344)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB938127)
They are showing Error Code: 0x8007F0F4

I have run through all the cleaning steps listed here and I can't seem to isolate the problem.
These are the scans/cleaners I have used other than my AV which is TrendMicro PCcillin ver 12.

So I'm having some problems with Windows Update...this is my parent's computer and I do scan regularly with Avast and Malwarebytes- no threats.

I go to update Windows Updates and it just stays on the loading screen...with 0% progress....however...from time to time I notice when I go to shut down the computer I get one of those icons on my shut down button that you sometimes get from updates so I don't know what's going on...I get that icon and at shut down it says updates 1 of 1 are installing do not turn off your computer, but then after reboot when I go back to Windows Updates it's now 1 less, so I had 14 updates now I have 11 but I still never saw the progress bar! nothing! there was no indication that updates were being installed it was always at 0% I waited over 5 hours- almost all day.

I'm just confused, and now it's saying I have 10 updates and again it's just stuck at the loading screen, no progress..

Hello deralickt and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you receiving any error codes? Are you able to boot your machine in Safe Mode? If yes, see if you can access System Restore and go back to a date/time prior to the update. If you don't have a restore point you could also see if that update is showing in Windows Update History. If it is, try uninstalling it.

Safe Mode

System Restore

Windows Update - Uninstall an Update

The failed update may have damaged or corrupted some system files. From Safe Mode you could try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Since you have an install DVD you could also try a Repair Install to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc.

Repair Install

A repair install may require that you reinstall a bunch of Windows Updates. I found it's safer (but more time consuming) to install just a few at a time rather than all at once. If you install a few at a time you can reboot, see if there are any issues, and if there are, you'll know exactly which 3 or 5 or 10 updates you need to remove. Reinstall them one at a time. They'll either all install correctly or you'll know exactly which one(s) are problematic. (If you install all at once and later find out there's a problem it's almost impossible to know which update is inv... Read more

Reinstalling a Thinkpad T410 Windows 7 Pro 64bit:  all is fine through Windows 7 SP1,  then all Thinkpad (Thinkvantage) drivers and then all the Windows security patches (to October 2013).HOWEVER loading some optional windows updates ( Bluetooth), or Windows .Net, or some of the other optional updates result in -get this- any keyboard entry freezing the currently active application it is meant for.  All other applications open and work fine as long as only the mouse is used. A keyboard entry only freezes the application it is meant for.  I once succeeded in having Google respond by entering a VOICE search item, but could never cut and paste ( -> keyboard entry!) into a Google search or any application Some other clues: rolling back (windows restore points) sometimes but NOT always return to a machine in good status. And starting in safe mode, the problem disappears. I have not had the patience to figure out which service /driver is causing the keyboard glitch. Will be ignoring these optional updates for now, but it would be good to know the reason this is happening ( a strange combination of drivers / inappropriate order loading updates? )

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.
1 machine = 1 license.

I'm currently on holiday and am connected through an expensive 3G modem plan. Whenever I try to connect, Windows update starts to download files. Every now and then I need to update MSE virus defs but Windows update downloads files GRR! What do I do about this pest? I just disabled the windows update service which obviously prevented me from downloading MSE defs

Answer:How to stop Windows update from downloading updates when I update MSE

Have you tried setting Windows Update to not Download updates?
You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.

Recently installed MS Office 2007 onto my Win 7 Pro OS.
The only 2 programs selected are Word and PowerPoint - for all others 'Not Available' was selected.

My problem is that MS keeps sending me update notices. I don't want these updates and they are blocking normal Win7 updates (ie have no regular updates since Office was installed and they used to be regular).

Does anyone know of a way I can get around this problem?

(currently there are updates totalling 106MB - all for Office)

I have Windows Update set to notify me when updates are ready so I can have some control over the time things are being done. So I get a little icon in my status bar and I click it and it asks if I want to download (yes) and now, install (yes) and I get "Installation complete". Then 10 seconds later it's back. It's the same file and I've installed it several times and it keeps coming back. The update installer seems happy as heck each time.

Zone Alarm shows full permission for "Update Automatic Updates" and "Ask" for "Update Manager for NT". I would be inclined to remove both from the Program List and let them "meet" Zone Alarm again so I can be sure the both have full, enduring permission. Does that seem like a plan?

bought new laptop in October all running fine on Windows 2010 Home and Business. updates ran about 10 days ago and internet and outlook stopped working, so I reversed all the updates and all was well. happened again overnight and again reversed everything.
now I have given up as I saw fix was due on 22/02/13 - but that hasn't fixed everything. IE is now fine, but outlook won't send or receive. have talked to ISP and nothing wrong with their end. so I try and reinstall everything but updates appear to load and then reverse out.

have spoken to microsoft - useless

IDK if it is related, but I also can't update drivers in Device Mgr. It just keeps searching the web for drivers, and nothing ever happens.

when I click over on the left "Welcome"
after a few seconds the screen refreshes but when I click scan for updates it says it never finished loading and click cancel to refresh and then it just hangs there again infinitly.

I had the same problem before but it was with Win2K. My problem was there was some spyware that prevented the Windows Update from working correctly, so that might be your case. Have you scanned your computer for any viruses or spyware lately? Also are you running a firewall? If so try turning it off then running Windows Update. Hope this helps.

My dell laptop recently had a crtical windows update. Since then it has been loading the dell default profile (alternating between 2 of them!). My desktop icons and gadgets are not loaded but my data files are still in place. Biggest problem is configuring my outlook again and setting up the network to my xp computer. I get a message to check user profile event log after each boot up. I have dell recovery disks which will take it back to factory setings. Should I backup my data and do a clean reinstall? Alternatively, could I reinstate my desktop (ie. reconfigure outlook, put the desktop icons back on etc) to what it was before and get it to load that profile? But it may lose the profile and just boot up as the standard dell profile again like it is doing now. I haven't imaged my computer, would that have made any difference or solved the problem?

My PC suddenly has gone clunkingly slow. At around the same time I had done a Disk Check and a Disk Defragment (for the first time ever), and then I downloaded KB 904942. After that the computer is working really slowly and often seems to freeze for a minute or so. Has anyone else had this problem? I am an inexperienced user and don't know how to find out if KB 904942 is a vital update, otherwise I might try deleting it to see if things run any better. Up until now the computer has been ticking over fairly steadily. The "going slow" happened suddenly, it is not something that has crept up slowly. Any suggestions welcomed please, but please in non-technical, words of one syllable language please!

Recently, I had to do a factory reinstall on my Dell Laptop which reverted it back to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Service Pack 1 in addition to drivers, software, etc. That worked out fine when using the disks, but I discovered another issue. When trying to get Windows Updates to install on my system, all I get is the screen that it's checking for updates and it keeps checking, but nothing ever gets installed. I've tried everything under the sun online to try to remedy this, but with no success. I've tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter as well, but I get an error of "problem installing recent updates." It did fix a "service registration is missing or corrupt" though. I've probably spent hours on trying to fix this, but to no avail. Any possible solutions or ideas?

Hi all,

I just reinstalled windows. After going thru a-lot of problems (tried to install windows on SATA drive without having a floppy) i succeed. I thought that was the end for my problems (for now at-least) and started installing my drivers. also formatted all the other partitions and restarted the computer. Before restarting everything worked properly.
When the computer booted and the windows loading screen went on I thought it'll take it a few seconds, but it went for like 10 minutes and didn't stop loading. I decided to grab something to eat and went for about 10 more minutes. when I came back it was still loading so i decided to restart.
When windows got to the safe mode screen i decided to choose try the last best setting and it helped. windows loaded properly but didn't have the drivers i installed before, so I installed them. restart again and windows not working again.
back to take the last best setting and back to windows working. I did it step by step (installing a driver and rebooting...) but didn't installed RAID controller and USB driver.
Since i don't need them i decided to not installed them. but my problem occurs when i try to update windows. Internet Explorer stops working as soon as i go inside "windows update" or "microsoft update", but i know it worked before i did the first restart.
Also going to the Automatic Update tab in System Settings gives me an error.

What should i do?
Thanks a-lot

Hello, I hope some one can help me.

I have a compaq v3070tu laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2 32 bit. I was having a problem with the wireless connectivity and while searching for remedies I read that it could be because of an old bios version. I checked the current installed bios on my laptop and it was an f11. The latest version on the hp website was f39, so i downloaded and installed the f39.

While installing it also said that it had backed up the old bios version. After installation the computer shut down, but when i started it again windows xp did not load.

Windows is now not even starting in safe mode. All i get is the initial xp startup screen for 2 seconds after which there is a flash of a blue screen with stuff written that I cannot read, and then the machine restarts.

I have a xp installation cd with which i tried to reinstall xp, but it now says that even the hard disk is not detected and therefore xp cannot be installed. But I went into bios and did a harddisk scan which was completed. So I don't understand how the hard disk is not being detected.

Can someone please tell me how I can get into windows and somehow reinstall the old bios and get things back to normal? There should be a backup somewhere of the bios, since the software said so while installing.

It's really upsetting and I'm cursing myself for uploading the bios.

I hope someone can help me.

Hi there.

I'm running Windows Vista 32bit SP1 on a Dell Inspiron 1545. Windows did an automatic update today when I loaded up the laptop and I reset as usual. Started up as I normally do but for some reason the startup did a BSOD on me and I got a "Windows failed to start due to a hardware or software failure/error"... seeing as it was fine previously I'm guessing this due to the updates recently. The only options I have are doing a system startup repair (which I tried but it just sat on a black screen for a while before a mouse cursor popped up which moves but nothing else appears), or to start windows normally which does the vista loading bar but then restarts after BSOD again. I tried to go into safe mode... but the same thing happens. It looks like I may have to reinstall Vista again, which would be a pain. Is there any way I can get around this and is this a common problem at the moment? I haven't been updatign my laptop for a while due to only just getting the internet back in the house, so this could have been a recent problem?

Please advise me of anything I can do.

Windows Update not working & drivers not loading

I have installed Windows XP Home Edition (no service packs) for the first time on a Sony Vaio VGN-A290 laptop. Laptop had major display problems when I got it, so I installed the new XP to start from scratch.

The laptop now runs well and looks good to me. However, It will not install any service packs from Windows Update. I have tried SP1a and SP2. The small security updates are getting through.

The Windows Update download/installation starts up but stalls in the first stage. There is no error message, just spins its wheels.

I tried to install some of the driver updates available from Sony for my model. Many of those installed well, but some "could not read system information". When I tried to install the original driver package for the motherboard, the display crashed again.

I started over with a new XP install, and am back at working computer unable to run Updater.

I have diagnostics from MGADiag.exe

When different user logs intop system (with different user profile and settings), update page loads and runs with no problems.

CleanMyPC registry cleaner ran and cleaned up 300 errors in COM/ActiveX area. Still no improvement.

Any Ideas???

Answer:IE6 blank screen when loading windows update

Let me suggest a work around.

In this case;
1- Create a new user ( administrator )
2- With your problem account go to C:\Documents and Settings\**username(the one with the problem)** and copy all.
3- Go to C:\Documents and Settings\**username(new one)** and paste everything you copied. Click yes to all when prompted.
4- Restart go to the new account. Change the names of the accounts. Then do an intensive check of your data. If everything you desire is transfered you can delete the problem account. I am pretty confident that since even your desktop background is transfered to the new account you would be satisfied.

Hi there,
I'm noticing a few issues. In order of appearance:
1. Many websites stopped displaying correctly. I have a feeling this has something to due with Javascript (not Java). Dynamic (?) content is gone in both Firefox 19.02 and IE 8. Hotmail fails to login. When attempting to redownload FF, the webpage does not actually give me the option: the header (three images and Tour | Desktop | Mobile | Add-ons | Support | About) and footer (privacy policy | Legal notices) are there, but everything in between is missing. Here's the page I'm refering to: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-19.0.2&os=win&lang=en-US
2. Windows update throws an error: 8024402F
3. M$ Mouse & Keyboard center fails to load. I get a popup (multiple times in a row) telling me to reinstall it. I have an old sidewinder mouse, but I can't say I've ever used that piece of software.
4. The wireless icon no longer shows up.
The only thing that's changed was that I installed Skype. It has since been removed.
Comodo & MBAM show no issues. This is a desktop PC, W7 x64.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
Finally, I ran the programs and obtained the logs asked for in the sticky but I'm not posting them here. Why? Because this applet thingy to post messages isn't working right (in BOTH browsers) and it's ignoring line breaks unless I use HTML tags. It's like a snail's pace to load everything in. Her laptop sat a black screen (mouse still visible) with the Windows build on center top and the word safe mode in the corners for a while. But eventually it did load in the rest of the icons/taskbar/etc. Is there a way to figure out why it's performance is still awful after doing a system restore?

After further reading I wasnt aware of the problems with lenovo computers and 8.1. A day or two later i realized that windows 8 upgraded the O.S and ever since then any program that I open takes a while to boot. Ive also noticed this when uninstalling programs. I really don't know what to do at  this point. Im frustrated, I've been using my old windows vista laptop instead as it is way faster then my current s510p. I've read online about uninstalling the ?Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework? from the device manager. will this solve something? thanks.

I am trying to open Windows Update under Settings and it will not load. It's just a blank page where Windows Update usually is. Also, under Settings and Windows Update I can't click on Windows Defender, Backup, Recovery, Activation, or Fore Developers.

Also, I have tried to open the Windows Store and the wheel keeps spinning. That's all it will do.

I can't make a screenshot because I can't get the screenshot to paste in paint.

So basically, the problem is that I can't open anything except for Microsoft Edge which is what I am now because the Windows 10 applications are not working properly.

This is my Desktop PC. It's an Acer XC603G that originally came with Windows 8.1 that was upgraded to Windows 10. (Intel Processor)

Please help!

Hi.
For how long has this been happening? Can you use system restore to go back to a time before the problems started?

If not, try running the system file checker to see if things can be corrected. If the results are "found problems but could not correct", then please run it three times, with reboots in-between.

If that doesn't work, the next step would be DISM.

Next after that would be a repair install by doing an in-place upgrade.

p.s. screenshots can be easily made with the snippet feature - search "snip"

Hello,

So yesterday I went to shut down my computer when Windows only gave me the option "Update & Shut Down" so I gave in and let it do its thing and update. I left it to update over night and came back this morning to a black loading screen with a little spiral spinning around and around. I could use my mouse but ctrl alt delete or any other shortcut didn't do anything.
Pics including specs and a photo of the loading screen here: Help - Album on Imgur

I've tried restarting it and booting up in safe mode but no progress unfortunately :/.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
cheers

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate x64.

Hey, for some reason after my computer got updated yesterday, I cannot boot into Windows. I get to the screen with the bars going by and it just stays there. I left it on for hours trying to wait it out and it would still stay there.

I tried booting into safe mode and that didn't work either. I ran Chkdsk, tried to repair vista boot, tried to restore, and none of those worked.

I have XP installed on another partition which boots fine so I have direct access to all the files, but I don't know if and what anything is corrupt.

Reformatting is not an option due to time constraints.

Is there anyway I can uninstall the last update from windows? I am pretty sure that is what caused this but not positive.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

What started as a crippling annoyance has escalated out of control. Windows auto updater, the bane of my existence, downloaded a patch and forced my computer to restart. Somewhere during that process, my laptop ran out of power and died, and upon rebooting, would load to configuring update, only to proceed to configuring failed, revoking changes or something to that effect. It would hang there for as long as I was patient to wait for it, which was a good half an hour. I proceeded to do shut it down and attempt a system repair, which apparently was successful, but I still had the same problem. I then went to system backup, only to find to my immense concern that there wasn't a restore point at all (which is unusual because the last time I did a system restore, I had several) I then proceeded to attempt multiple means to fix things, with only running in safe mode with networking to allow me to log in. Eventually it offered to run a CHKDSK scan, which apparently found and cleaned a metric ton of files in a variety of manners, but now it won't load at all. Trying to boot it in any mode causes the laptop to hang indefinitely on the windows logo, attempting to repair the operating system with the installation disk merely causes it to search endlessly for an operating system to repair, despite having found one flawlessly before the CHKDSK scan - I'm now attempting to run a startup repair with the F8 menu, but it is currently searching endlessly for problems.

I'm have a very big problem. And it is very annoying. Every time I restart my computer from an automatic update, I get an "Error loading operating system" on start up. The only way to fix it is to restart my computer with my system disc in and do a system restore. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Hey, guys. I'm new here and I could really use some advice or basically whatever you can tell me. If this question has already been asked, then I apologize. I did a search for it and couldn't find anything, though.

Okay, basically, at around 5 a.m. this morning my Windows (I have a Compaq running Windows XP Media Edition) decides to run the typical automatic Windows updates, were it eventually comes to the Windows blue loading screen (like when you first log-in) and previously, these automatic updates have finished with no problems at all, with relatively fast loading time. But this time around, it seems to be stuck or atleast loading very slowly...it's been at "Updates are being installed (3 of 3)..." for 7 hours now. I'm not sure what to do about this...if I should just wait it out, or turn off my computer. Because it's also telling me "Do not turn off your computer; it will turn off automatically." so I don't want to end up killing my entire system or something, since I didn't get a chance to back up all my files this morning before it tried to update.

I've heard some horror stories from friends saying they waited up to 12 hours for it to finish, and other's saying they just shut it off and it ended up ruining their system.

Given those two options, obviously, I would wait...But, I could really use some advice on what I should do here. Do I have any other options?

Answer:Windows Update Problem - Not loading? *advice needed*

Hi, I just updated all of my computers hardware.

Now I have:

ASUS M2a VA motherboard
AMD XP 64 5000+ processor
Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX
2gb ram

When I power on my computer, everything goes fine. It takes me to the screen where it says that Windows closed abnormally, bla bla bla, choose safe mode, last known good config, etc.

When I choose any of these, it blinks the Windows loading screen, and then blinks what appears to be a blue screen of death, then the computer restarts.

What's the problem? I have Windows XP Professional installed. I would REALLY not want to do a format and reinstall of everything if possible. Do I need Windows XP professional 64 or something?

Answer:BSOD after hardware update right after the Windows loading screen

It could be a hard drive issue. If it's looping then the hard drive could have failed or be failing. Find out the manufacturer of the hard drive and go to their web site and download the tests. Then create a boot able CD and boot off it and run the tests.

I am trying to update and restart my computer. I believe this update is the new Windows 10 update. When my computer restarts after claiming to successfully install updates, all I get is a black screen with the small white dots in the bottom center circling around like it's loading. I am unable to sign in, see a start screen, or do anything.

Did you already installed Anniversay or THAT IS anniversary? If the answer is the #2, it might time one hour to finish installing (installation before restart is only the first quarter of the whole process on desktops)

I've updated and selected updates in this window before, suddenly I can't see any updates there at all. WU tells me there's 33 optional updates available, when I click and the window to select those and install them appears I can't see any of them. =/ Check the attachment to see what I'm talking about. I've changed setting in Windows Update to see if that was the cause of the problem but it didn't help. Important updates (when I had them) weren't showing either... Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What part is ugly? This shouldn't be an issue with Windows 7. You can choose to not download the update in Windows Update and put a check in Do Not Remind Me of this Update.

Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

Answer:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

Ok I have 2 problems, first is Microsoft Update. I use windows Vista SP1 and XP SP3 on separate laptops, and windows update isnt working on either of them. It downloads the updates, then it fails at the installation part.

Second, on my laptop with Vista (SP1) when I restart/turn on the computer and windows starts, it doesnt load windows explorer and just opens my my documents folder. I have to start the task manager and run windows explorer from there each time I restart my computer.

Help is appreciated, thankyou in advance =)
