Windows Update - left hand sidebar missing

Question: Windows Update - left hand sidebar missing

Another problem (at least it's totally inconcistent from one install to the next)...

On the primary Windows Update screen, there is a "navigation pane" on the lefthand side (sidebar). From the primary WU screen, when I click on the righthand area "xxx important updates are available", it takes me to the screen showing all the updates that I am allowed to download. However, the navigation pane (left/sidebar) is GONE now. On my prior install, that navigation pane was there on EVERY suboption/subapplet of Windows Update. Currently, that navigation pane/sidebar is only there on the primary WU screen.

Preferred Solution: Windows Update - left hand sidebar missing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey,

My start menu panel doesn't show recently used applications at all, despites it's turned on at properties. Not even will it show the default browser and email client as the first two rows while I have them set.
What could be the problem?
I think there's some kind of registry workaround that would do the trick.
Anyone could help?

I've attached a screenshot (in Hungarian, I have Hungarian version of Windows XP SP3).

Thanks

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Answer:Windows Explorer left hand pane

I think the OP is noticing the little quirk in Win 7 where Explore does not bring the left pane target folder (the one with focud) up to the to of the pane, throwing it instead to the bottom of the pane.

A nuisance for sure, but unresolved to my knowledge.

I am very new to the PC world, trying to find my way around and running XP. During this learning process I somehow lost the Windows Explorer Default Pane to the Left of the window (it used to show System Tasks/Other Places/Details in separate panels).I can still get Search and Folders by pressing the buttons in the tool bar but when both are de-selected I only have a large window with no sign of the original panel. Please can someone tell me if it is possible to recover this information as I found it very helpful. If so can you also tell me how to do it in simple terms. Many thanks.

Answer:Windows Explorer - Left Hand Default Pane

Open any Explorer window, select Tools from the top of the window, select Folder Options. Under the first heading (Tasks) make sure "Show Common Tasks In Folders" is selected, if not left click it. Click OK.

Most of the time I am having problems getting my Windows 10 phone to respond to my left hand fingers. This has been the case for some time. After a while i usually give up and use my right hand, even though I am left-handed. Is this by design? Am I missing a setting? Is the phone screen sensitive to some significant deficiency on the surface of my left hand fingers? Can anyone throw any light on this

I updated to Windows 10 a week or so ago, and since then I've noticed that I no longer seem to have a right-hand click menu function: on Chrome/Explorer, it opens the link I'm clicking on in another tab or window, but on everything else either nothing at all happens or the scrolling arrows appear. Does anyone know why this is, and how to get it back? It's a nightmare! Thanks.

(to be clear: I'm talking about the menu that has copy/paste/select all etc on standard programs, or thesaurus/font etc on Microsoft Word.)

Hi guys,

The other day I was using my old desktop and using firefox when suddenly firefox froze up while browsing and I was unable to ctrl+alt+del or click start or anything for that matter in order to close it down. I then turned off my computer manually by pressing the power button as I sometimes do when my computer freezes and turned it back on. Unfortunately, when I turned it back on the computer is stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore in the top left hand corner.

I unfortunately am not good with computers and would like to avoid reformatting my computer, as this old desktop contains the largest amount of my media such as music and movies that I had been meaning to put onto an external hard drive. Furthermore, I do not have an XP installation disc and am unable to locate the system recovery discs that came with the PC (like I said, it's old, circa 2006, and they are most likely lost somewhere in the house or thrown out by now). Thank you for all the help and support in advance.

Answer:Windows XP black screen with blinking underscore in top left hand corner

if you haven't tried, as you switch on press the F8 key up and down repeatedly, if this works you will be at the safe mode menu - try last known good config. If still no go, try booting to BIOS - if this doesn't work I would say hard drive issue. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program, this has to be burned to a disk. Then put the disk in and let it boot the pc and run the test.

Hello. I am a Forum and Windows 8 Newb.

I really liked the sidebar that popped up from the left of the screen showing what you had open in Windows 8. Now it's suddenly gone and I don't know why.

Also, I've noticed that when I launch Chrome from the Start page, it no longer opens a Chrome browser independent of the Desktop, as it used to. Now it just opens Desktop and launches Chrome from within there.

I don't know if these two problems are related but I really liked it the way it was before. Any ideas what I may have fouled up?

Thanks!

I can not create sidebar page. How I can create sidebar and How can I integrate it with main page? Only html code. Please give me some sample page or link from where I can see sample. Thanks.

Answer:How to create left and right sidebar using html?

I don't know about writing it from scratch taking a long time, this code took about 5 minutes to write - probably faster than firing up a web creation tool.
It took longer creating an image (as you can't post code here) and working out how I could upload it somewhere to give it to you. click here
You can manipulate that code to your hearts content, adjusting the % will alter the width of each column. The backgrounds are only there to demonstrate the concept.

I recently bought an HP laptop at Costco online. They let me configure it, and I put in one of the high end, 512 MB video cards. I love the games. I wonder if that exacerbates the problem. Gets pretty warm under my left hand, where it rests on the laptop. Is there any solution for this? Any gizmo or add on that would help this problem?
I could conceivably return the laptop, but I hate to. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Silly question, I expect, but no manual accompanied the laptop (T400), which is second hand. Anyway, there's an ejectable latticed tray on the short side on the left with numerous places for things. But what things? Anybody know? It might be useful for expanding hard drive capacity for example... Apart from the quick setup guide and instructions for professional technicians, there doesn't seem to be an ordinary user's guide for this Lenovo thinkpad. There's nothing on Lenovo, com's website - which is strange to say the least. There must be one somewhere, but where? Pluto46

Hello everybody!

First time poster here. I was wondering if there is a registry tweak or something to remove the left side bar (which says "Windows XP Professional") completely? The bar is not visible when "Show Small Icons in Start Menu" is selected but I want the text to be at their default size and still not have the bar on the left.

The reason why I want to do this is I only have Programs, Settings, Run and Shutdown (I removed the rest because I don't use them) in my Start Menu and the side bar is all black because there is not enough room to display "Windows XP Professional". This is by design I guess.

So I want to remove the black side bar and still maintain the default size of text. Hope I am making sense. :)

Thank you!

If you are uncertain what you've done, first stop is a repair of Internet Explorer.Go to the Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel.Open Add/Remove Programs and find "Internet Explorer x.x and Tools" or something similar. The x.x is the version number.Select it and choose Add/Remove (or Remove or whatever it is). From the box that appears, choose Repair. Then wait. You will need to restart your computer after. This may not solve it, but if it's a missing file or setting, then this will pick it up.QuickHare

Hi,

First post here.

The problem is that I am getting no sound from my left hand PC speaker. The right hand one is playing fine. I have unplugged them from the back of the tower and plugged them in again and this makes no difference, although I did hear some very, very low sound from the left speaker while the plug was halfway back in the tower.

I have tried another set of speakers and the same thing is happening with them, so I know the speakers themselves are not faulty.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Rich.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Sounds like a faulty socket to me. Are you using onboard or a separate soundcard?

If onboard, then try a separate soundcard. If you`re already using a separate soundcard, then try the onboard sound.

Hi,

a while ago i had a problem with some videos not streaming, so at some site it recommended to turn something off in my explorer settings.

The videos then all played on different blogs etc but since a week or two, some of the videos im trying to watch on different sites show up in the top left hand side of the screen, flikkering, but the controls like full screen and movement of the time bar still stay in tact at the place where the video should be shown, you just have to estimate where the controls would normally be and then click or drag..

Can you please help me to put the settings back, and then still see the different videos unlike the the problem it originally started of with ?

Thank you very much,

Dennis

Answer:[SOLVED] video's and ads appear in top left hand screen

What was recommended to be turned off in Explorer (or was it Internet Explorer..)?

And what recommended it?

Was it a Windows screen or message from the website?

To attempt to clarify my last request. On clicking on the "C":\ icon one would expect to see a window containing athe files contained therein, this happens as expected, but on clicking the Folders Icon at the top of the window I get an Explorer type of "Tree", which is ok, but how can I get the (approx) 4 menus which contain various items such as delete, change name, plus many others. I did have this option before I had to re format and re install XP home and SP2. All the folder windows have the same problem.

Answer:File Window, left hand panel.

Have you tried toggling off the folder tree by pressing the Folders button? The folder tree and search facility just toggle on and off, replacing the default pane that you have described. If that doesn't work, then it's a much deeper problem and may require a repair or re-installation.

For a couple of months now I have had small square ads appear in the bottom part of my browser windows (all browsers on this machine... chrome IE and Firefox) Below is a screenshot of said ads.I have run everything I can think of... MalwareBytes, TDSS killer, my native McAfee, Combo Fix, RogueKiller... Poured over Hijack this logs... Usually something is found virus wise as a randomly named alphanumeric.exe program in the Roaming folder of my User ApData section. As per forum instructions, I am not including any reports in this thread, just let me know if I can provide anything to help. I'm at my wits end on this one.Oh, and operating Windows 7

Hi guys,i have a problem, i was working on this PC that had a problem. the problem was - when it is turned on,nothing comes on.There is a black screen and blinking cursor (looks like an under-score) [blink]_[blink]that just keeps blinking.Okay this is what I did. I thought the hard disk was damaged, I get a brand new hard disk drive (SATA) and inserted in, and start installing the System Restore Discs and Operating system CD, it is a HP Compaq Desktop dx2200 MT.Every thing goes perfectly well, it starts up fine, XP is installed up and running, all other software are being installed. It all looks great up until I slave the original hard disc in order to copy back the users files back onto the new disc. By the way all copying goes well until the PC suddenly freezes, it doesn't respond to all the keyboard keys or the mouse whatsoever, even pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL in an attempt to open the the Task Manager doesn't work. I turn of the PC by pressing the power button. Remember there are 2 hard discs connected now in the PC, Master and Slave, both are SATA.When I turn it on, the blinking starts again.I try removing the original hard drive (the one I slaved) and still it doesn't boot correctly. I try booting either of them alone, still nothing,I don't think it is a virus problem, because I installed Sophos and had it updated straight after the OS, and if I had connected the slave hard disk it could had detected it.these are things I have tried.1.Removed RAM card and p... It's a Compaq system...did you check the Compaq support site?

From what I see, HP system have proprietary boot mechanisms...which isn't necessarily good for what may be the problem.

My guess is that the MBR is damaged, Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503. Using the fixmbr command from the XP Recovery Console of a MS Genuine XP CD...is the normal cure.

But you have a Compaq and I don't know if that command would be effective with your system.

The keyboard can go out and when they do it is usually a section of keys not the whole thing. Try going into device manager find the keyboard and "uninstall" it then reboot to let Windows reacquire the driver. You can also turn it off remove the battery and power and hold down the power button 15 seconds then reattach power and power on. You can also go into BIOS (F10 setup) and restore default settings. If none of these works it is time for a new keyboard. They are fairly cheap and easy for the end user to install do it yourself. Post back if you want a link to a place to buy the keyboard and an instruction manual.

I spilled a little bit of milk and clean it off of the touch pad and now only the left hand side corner is working? How much would it be if i get it fixed? Or what can i do about it?

Answer:The touchpad only work on the left hand side

Sounds like the milk ran down into the contact surfaces. Tricky to fix yourself but it is not easy to suggest what others would charge for this operation - get some estimates.IMPORTANT - Please come back and let us know the outcome.

Hi,

i love the new left side pane in folder view, but i cannot seem to get it to show 'Desktop'

id like to place it where the red line is

[also, can you change the icons for 'libraries' ]

Answer:Customize the left hand folder pane?

Hi al4x,

The closest I got with adding the desktop icon to the side pane is you can add the desktop Icon by clicking the Favorites arrow.(it might be already there). If you don't have any favorites or the arrow is not there you can add the Desktop Icon to it by Clicking and holding the icon and drag it to the favorites tab..

I have not been able to figure out if you can just add an icon anywhere in the side pane my guess in no..

And I have not found a way to change the icons for the libraries..(I don't think you can)

Hope this Helps..

There's a slot there, skinny and wide, which flexes whenever I put my left hand on the handrest.  i want to put something in it to stop it flexing, and I'm hoping that i can buy a plastic filler piece somewhere (like the one in my ExpressCard slot) but I don't know what it is.  Smart Card, perhaps?  Does anyone know if such a filler piece exists?

Answer:What's the slot on the left hand side, towards the front?

erik_h, According to Service Manual it is SmartCard Reader indeed.

Hi guys,

I'm not great with computers and not sure if this is the right place to post this...

I have a Toshiba Equium laptop which overheats on the left hand side whenever it has been plugged into the charger for longer than about 15 minutes.

This heat also goes through to the mouse pad, does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks

Answer:Equium overheats on the left hand side

What is the model of laptop?

Does it also heat up when the laptop is turned off? Does the battery get hot as well? If the battery gets hot, I would take the laptop to an Authorised Service Center as soon as possible.

If its only getting hot when the laptop is turned on, the CPU may simply be overheating by dust buildup in the heatsink.

Ok, so about a week ago I recieved a dreaded image on my screen, that of bios telling me it could not start windows due to a file which is missing or corrupt (skrnl or something along those lines). In any case, I did what any self-respecting techy would do and I tried to solve it on my own with the help of countless articles. When I tried to reinstall windows it still gave me missing or corrupt errors during the installation (different files all the time). In the end, I determined that the harddrive was at fault. I bought a new hardrive, installed it, and I still could not install windows (it hangs at the "setup is now starting windows" part). I am now led to believe that this is a much deeper issue involving the mobo. As I can't even get into windows, I don't have access to too much more information. However, heres my system specs:

Athlon 64 3500+
2 GB DDR333 Patriot
320GB Segate Barracuda
eVGA SLI mobo
eVGA 7800GT
Audigy 2 ZS Gamer
ATI TV tuner

Any help is appreciated as before I take out my mobo and attempt to rma it I would like to be sure that this is the issue.

Windows XP PRO, Quick Launch Toolbar problem. A normal default Taskbar starting from the left has a Start button, two vertical 4 and 3 dot preparations, respectfully, when and if you install the Quick Launch Toolbar, a Button with a double right arrow or more-than sign appears with two vertical 4 and 3 dot preparations, respectfully. The problem: The Button with a double right arrow or more-than sign has disappeared, but the two vertical 4 and 3 dot preparations remain. I am unable to drag and drop any icon, and with any attempt, a black circle with a slash line shows on the icon. I have been unable to find any reference with a 2 week google.com search. I have also paid for, downloaded, installed and tried the utility called "Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!", by Kelly's - Korner web site.., but it did not work. We would appreciate any help.. Hello, in Outlook 2013 there is a pane/sidebar on the left of the main UI where all of my configured email accounts are listed. Here I can see my gmail and comcast accounts and if desired, expand the folder list for each account. I recently added a new Yahoo pop3 account but for some reason it doesn't appear there. It works properly as far as send/receive but doesn't show up in the list. Any idea how to fix?

I was in the process of trying video cards out on my system and realized later that the sound on my left hand side is not there anymore.  I have looked in the case and I can't see where I've undone any type of header or anything, but the sound seems to be getting less and less (possibly on the right hand side)?  Could I have possibly knocked something lose, or is this something that's a common occurance with this model(s)?  If I was looking for a replacement, I had thought of one of the Creative Sound Blaster audio cards.. but as I'm disabled I would just love to get the onboard sound working again without spending any money!  If I do have to go the sound card route, any suggestions?  Also (and I'm dating myself here..lol) do you need to connect a header from the dvd drive to the sound card anymore or is that handled by the Serial ATA connection?     Thank you for your time and God Bless!             Sincerely,                  x0mage

If you are running XP there should be a button labelled "Folders" to the right of the "Search" button at the top of the window (when "viewed as a web page") Click this and the panel should appear with the folders in it.

Recently my XP Professional SP2 system developed an annoying habit - every time I reboot all the icons get reset to the left-hand-side of the screen. On startup the icons at first appear where they were when the PC was shut down, but then they all leap over into a random order on the left. I can see the icons being re-initialised several times on screen during the startup procedure (i.e. they go to generic icons then gradually reinstate the real icons).Anyone know what might be causing these multiple icon loads, and particualrly what might be causing the annoying resetting to the left-hand side?

Answer:XP - Icons reset to left-hand side on startup

Right click on an empty part of the desktop and 'select arrange icons by' then uncheck 'auto-arrange and make sure 'align to grid' is selected.

another question about the Pro M70 PSM75E, beside the hard drive (left hand side) there is a port which u can take off. i took it of and it looks like a grafx chip or something :s anyone with the M70 no what it is.

Thanks Again

Answer:Satellite Pro M70: Question about the port on the left hand side

Hi

Well, there are many Satellite Pro M70. It?s a large series.
But for example Satellite Pro M70-110 has a PCMCIA Type II slot.
You can use different PCMICA card in this slot. But they must be compatible.
I assume in this slot you have found a plastic board. This is only for securing.

However, if you want to know more about your unit I would recommend reading the user manual which should be preinstalled on your notebook. There you will find very, very, very ;) useful informations.

It seems as if there is a lot of information, both old and new, about an issue with T500 keyboards. In November of 2009 I purchased a new T500 to replace my old but reliable TP600.  I configured my new T500 to order with Win 7 as well as the best graphics option and the 3.06 processor. Although many of the posts say that the keyboard issue has been resolved on the newer models, I don't think this is the case, as my T500 seems to have an odd 'non solid feeling' to the left side keys, particularly keys: r,e,w,q, f,d,s,a,v,c,x, and z. I am not sure if I should call customer support about this issue and is there a keyboard replacement available that is more consistent feeling like my old TP600?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:New T500 with odd feel to left hand keyboard buttons.

Well, I did not receive any replies back, but I did some more research, both here, in the forums, and on line, and here is what I learned. Evidently the T500's are now being built with a keyboard that has a vented backing plate with a lot of openings to release heat from the processor. Some in the forums have taken pictures of this new keyboard and referred to it as the 'Swiss cheese' design. In addition, to quell complaints, Lenovo has also added a  inside, to the left side of the T500 so that the keyboard will rest on this and eliminate some of the sag to the left side keys. Right out of the box, my T500 exhibited a bad sag and flex downward to the left side keys. Further inspection revealed that I had the new improved bracket and the vented or 'Swiss cheese' style keyboard. I found that the part number on my keyboard is 42T4034 with a FRU of 42T4066. I saw that some owners had modified their machine with felt pads placed in specific areas under the keyboard but I did not want to do that, being that this is a brand new 1,600 + machine. Further forum research revealed that some people were replacing their keyboard with the older, solid backing plate design from the T61 which is FRU 42T3209. I called Lenovo tec support and spoke with an employee. I described the problem with the left side keyboard flex and the employee insisted that this issue was 'normal' and that all he could do was send me another 42T4066 keyboard which would be the same. I asked ... Read more

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this question. My daughter was using my MSI laptop and when she tried to start the computer all that came up was a black screen with the cursor in the upper left corner. She selected the restore option which came up because the other options would not do anything.

Is there any possible way to recover my files, pics, etc. or is it just gone now? I'm really upset because I had five years of photos of my grandchildren. =(

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

So, the left-hand bar is supposed to represent the desktop, and the contents on it, like in XP. I'd like to make it look more normal.

1. I want to remove: libraries, favorites, homegroup, and network. When you remove them, they just come back. Even if they aren't on the desktop. What gives?

2. I want to add My Documents above My Computer. And have My Computer defaulted to being opened (so I can see my drives.)

3. I would like the Recycling Bin to appear.

4. I would like "Desktop" to be atop the list, as that is how it makes the most sense to me.

Is there a way to re-enact this through Libraries? Or to actually make it happen? Or a different program? What's the deal though, the Windows 7 look is so... illogical and unorganized and cluttered.

Answer:Left-hand bar in Explorer or Browse Files boxes to look like XP.

Folder Options > General tab: Navigation Pane > Check "Show all folders"
Then collapse the parts you do not want to see and close the window.

I have a blue screen problem. Don't know if I should post it here or not but here is my problem.

I have windows 8. I updated to 8.1. So far so good. That is until this morning. I don't know if this is in fact a Windows 8.1 issue or if anyone has ever experienced this before. I turned on the computer. I got the 'Hi' message followed by the next message of windows getting my apps updated. I then had a blank blue screen with a 'start' in the top left hand corner and an arrow in a box pointing to the next page. On the next page I had APPS on the top left hand corner and a blank box. I typed in 'desk top' even tho' that is not an 'app' as such. It took me to a blank black page with a bin in the top left hand corner. It looked liked my machine had been completely wiped. This has never happened before and I tried to Google it but the answers given did not have any correlation to what happened to me...any clues anyone?" Sorry guys, I just reread my post....I forgot to say that my computer has been functioning as normal all day .. What I did was to turn it off and back on again and it worked as normal. The thing is, I don't now trust it and want to know what? why and is it something I need to address.

Just went through the second Tuesday update cycle and when all five computers restarted, sidebar.exe crashed during boot up, and kept crashing on repeated restarts. Dropping back to the restore point just prior to the update cycle restored proper Windows Sidebar operation. As there were over two dozen critical updates between Windows and MS Office, it took some work to isolate which update broke the Windows Sidebar. I've been able to replicate installing KB3097877 crashing sidebar.exe and uninstalling it restores proper sidebar function, on two laptops and two desktops, all with Windows 7 Pro or Windows 7 Ultimate /x64 . . . although I don't believe the Win7 variant makes any difference.

Even if auto updates are turned off, Windows insists on trying to install KB3097877 during Shutdown (i.e. when you turn off the computer). The only way to prevent it from being reinstalled (and breaking the sidebar again) is to select and hide this update in Windows Update.

You may or may not have seen my other issue with this laptop which resulted in a replacement unit.

Now for the replacement, i've had it for about a week and everything was perfect up until last night where i started hearing a crackling sound coming from one of the speakers. (At the time i was playing a racing game so the audio was engine sound, a particular range of engine note resulted in the speakers to crackle).

I was immediately concerned and turned the volume down and logged off. I came back today to test the issue and see if the problem persisted. While i have not heard the crackling sound today there is a very loud "pop" sound which comes from the left hand speaker.

The Pop sound occurs at the start or end of a sound being played. Regularly doing so at the end of a youtube video if the video is cut short by a change of webpage.

I don't want to have to request a replacement because of the hassle caused but may end up doing so if the problems cannot be resolved. I have noticed similar issues with other people's laptops on some forums so i am checking audio drivers and other software which could've created the problem.

Answer:Re: Satellite P850-12x loud "pop" sound comes from the left hand speaker

Hi

Do you have an smart audio installed on your system?
I read in one thread about more powerful sound which was produced from left speaker.
The solution was to disable the 3d immersion option available in Smart Audio.

But if your speaker hardware is affected, then this option would be useless in your case?
Maybe you would need to get in contact with the ASP again to solve this problem

Hey guys, i honestly can't believe how many people are having this issue, so simply once and for all... there is an easy solution to this problem. You do not need to uninstall/reinstall anything, change bios, get a new graphics card (in most situations, only significantly old graphics cards cannot play this game on minimum settings), or anything.

To fix... go into properties, compatibility and tick the box that says run in 640x480resultion... this minimizes the work the GPU needs to do and tricks the game into thinking it is adequate. In game, you can then alter the resolution to the correct one for your monitor.

Hey guys,

back in the good old days of W7, you could pin an application to the start menu and it would appear on the left hand side and it would also offer a list of recently opened things within that application as a right arrow for ease of selection.

For example, within putty I have 2 saved sessions, when I pinned putty to the start menu in W7, it would pin the main program, but a right-arrow would accompany it and let me easily select Saved Session 1 or Saved Session 2 without having to launch putty manually. Similarly for something like notepad, you could pin that and it would come with an arrow and let you open your most recent opened documents without having to open notepad first and then selecting your text file. See attached W7 example png.

The W10 start menu does not let you do this at all. I can pin programs to the pig awful tiles section (please kill it with fire!) but critically it does not provide me with an easy method of selecting something within an app to launch via that app without launching that app first. It must be capable of doing something like it because the default File Explorer menu has the arrow and selection box.

The dirtiest hack I can come up with is somehow manually editing my MRU list but is it easier than that? Please tell me there's a reasonably well built in method for doing simple customisations to the W10 start menu! And if not, tell me how I can manually edit my MRU even though it throws the whole concept of recently used out the wind... Read more

Answer:Left-hand side start menu true customisation?

Ok, so thanks to this post How to Pin folder to start bar? - Windows 10 Forums

I have come up with a slightly better filthy hack.

you can navigate to C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and it has the shortcuts you've pinned in there. You can then edit the shortcuts to launch stuffs more effectively. So instead of having putty link to just putty, I can set it there to have some arguments. That's a start but still not perfect.

Any other ideas? (:

Hello there

So after installing and tweaking windows 8, some small annoyances remain. One of them that i encounter every day is as follows:
I have 2 monitors. Primary on the right, secondary on the left.
If i take my cursor up to the top left of the primary monitor, it gets "stuck" and will not move over to the left hand screen (secondary monitor). I believe this is caused by the APP bar which I have disabled as per (http://www.ghacks.net/2012/08/19/disable-windows-8-mouse-over-corner-interfaces/).
However the problem still remains. If i go aproximately 10 pixels down from the upper left hand corner, i can mouse over to the other screen fine. No menu comes up, my cursor just hits a wall. I have made sure both montior tops are in line in the screen resolution
screen.

I tried to shoot a video of it, but of course camstudio does not work in windows 8 (sigh).
steps to reproduce are, drag your mouse to the very top left corner with the intention of moving it to the second monitor.
How can i disable? I have tried the GPO setting for EdgeUI which creates the registry key ( DisableTLcorner) in the link above.

As a bit of background, if one is constantly using VNC to manage other peoples computers, I do not want to steal focus from their mouse by dragging my cursor over the centre of the screen. So i bring my mouse cursor to the very top (title bar area) and try
and move between screens. Obviously this is a windows 8 "feature". Anyone else a... Read more

Answer:Cannot mouse over upper left hand corner on dual monitors

Um no, I have never in my life found that installing a monitor driver ever fixed anything.

there is nothing in the application log that has anything to do with this problem as its a mouse event. No event is obviously generated when i am moving the mouse around the screen.

you cannot reproduce? I have installed a few more windows 8s and the problem exists on every single one.

here is a video of the event. Finaly got camstudio working properly, just have to do the whole screen. in the video, i try and move the mouse in the upper left and lower left of the screen. the two screens are different wallpapers to make it easier to see.
I have managed to find a service that allows uploads, the video file is here so you can see what im talking about. I hope that makes it clearer.

I hope someone knows how to change this because for some reason it drives me crazy. As we all know the word "Start" appears on the top left hand corner of the win8/8.1/RT metro home screen. Is there anyway to get rid of it? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey guys,

I recently had the moneypak FBI virus and cleaned my registry using Ccleaner and also cleared my Temp files manually (which actually got rid of the problem).

Since I cleared this, the top left hand corner of my screen (roughly 2 icon squared in size) does not allow any direct clicking or interaction. The area is not obstructed by any objects and I can still drag things out of that area as long as my cursor is on an area outside of said area.

This affects all programs I use, including my browsers, Steam and Explorer.

I realise I have probably deleted a registry file I shouldn't have but have had no luck finding any other people who have had the same problem, any help you guys can offer would be most appreciated! Cheers!

I have purchased via online(flipkart) HP laptop above mentioned model. Now i had problem was display issues, Left hand side two vertial lines showing . I think this is display problem. How can i service my laptop . Help me.

Answer:Display problem / Two vertical lines showing in left hand ...

Hi,Please connect your laptop to external monitor through HDMI cable and see if lines are appearing in the external monitor. Is the lines there in BIOS setup? Tap away F10 key as soon as you power on laptop to enter BIOS setup. If yes,Then your laptop is covered within 1 year warranty and you still have 5 months left. I'll suggest you to directly contact HP technical support in your region. They would assist you further. This forum is not official HP technical support. HP maintains no official presence here. All the members helping others here are end users like you.http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.htmlhttp://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlWarranty check:https://support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarrantyPossibly display panel issue. If it is display connector issue, then lines would come and go during the movement of lid or laptop.RegardsVisruth

I've had a refurbished laptop since February and it's been great till now, when a blue line appears from top to bottom of the screen on the left hand side of it every time I turn it on. I've emailed the seller to ask if he knows what is causing it as he sells hundreds of these and they are ok (hope I didn't get the duff one!!!) - it's an IBM T40 Thinkpad and it works great apart from this line. I've rebooted it the first time it happened (Sunday) and it went away but it's back now and no amount of rebooting clears it, just wondered if anyone has any ideas as to what it could be and how to remove it (if possible). Thanks

Answer:Blue line appearing on left hand screen of laptop

Try upgrading your graphics drivers to the latest version from the IBM website. It could be dead pixels on the sceren (which means the screen is faulty)
