Windows Recovery disk shows operating system: Unknown on (Unknown)

Question: Windows Recovery disk shows operating system: Unknown on (Unknown)

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

Ghost Shot>

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing restores from Ghost 15,etc. Anyway, ghost was backing up my system C: drive before last week. I have yet to even try and use Ghost to see if it would successfully restore my OS but I've been using it to backup my C: drive anyways. Prior to last week it could backup my C: drive fine. I might try a Ghost restore point from a few weeks back before this happened but not sure yet.

Here's my partition setup in disk mgt.
And here's what the diskpart tool shows:

Code:
DISKPART> list volume

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 H GSP1RMCPRXF UDF DVD-ROM 3167 MB Healthy
Volume 1 D GAMES NTFS Partition 459 GB Healthy
Volume 2 E RAIDAPPLICA NTFS Partition 701 GB Healthy
Volume 3 F BIOSLOADS FAT32 Partition 24 GB Healthy
Volume 4 G BACKUPS NTFS Partition 117 GB Healthy
Volume 5 System Rese NTFS Partition 100 MB Healthy System
Volume 6 C NTFS Partition 111 GB Healthy Boot
When I just tried the recovery options from the Windows 7 CD it says "operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk." I guess I would need to load my SSD drivers to get this function to work correctly but not sure yet. I was reading the thread about restoring the MBR using the bootsect tool on the CD but I couldn't get the Recovery CD to see my OS. So, do you think I can just put the CD in the drive while Windows 7 is running and run this command > bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr

I found this info in this thread>
MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record

Another strange thing I noticed was in my BIOS my Intel SSD now seems to show 3 volumes and I'm almost certain that was not this way before. It shows these >
A031 intel SSDSC2MH120A2
Intel Volume1
Intel Volume0

Not sure why? I'm pretty tired but I'd like to get my Ghost backing up again and Windows repair capable of seeing the OS. Any ideas what I should try? I'm tempted to do the MBR repair inside widows since it seems MBR related. I only have Windows 7 on this system and don't want to hose it up since it still works fine.

I don't recall loading anything that would of caused this issue and I'm not sure how it came about. I also just did a malware bytes scan and it came up clean. Thanks for any ideas/suggestions!

Preferred Solution: Windows Recovery disk shows operating system: Unknown on (Unknown)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows Recovery disk shows operating system: Unknown on (Unknown)

Note, I just went into my Disk 3 where my SSD resides in DISKPART and did some commands if this helps. It shows both the 100MB and 111GB Partitions on the Intel SSD as "Active".

Code:
DISKPART> list partition

Partition ### Type Size Offset

Partition 2 Primary 111 GB 101 MB

DISKPART> detail partition

Active: Yes
Offset in Bytes: 1048576

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
* Volume 5 System Rese NTFS Partition 100 MB Healthy System

DISKPART> select partition 2

Partition 2 is now the selected partition.

DISKPART> detail partition

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

Then I asked my neighbor and fortunately could borrow Window... Read more

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Answer:Operating system (unknown) on unknown local disk

Welcome!

Try marking the C partition as active again, using the Windows method in my post here.

Then run Startup Repair from the repair disc. Hopefully it will see your installation.

Hello Everyone,
my Laptop is unable to startup normally, and when i tried to ''repair-computer'', my operating system isn't listed.

however i tried almost everything [ safe mode - last known successful start up or whatever its called - and low resolution] and nothing happens.

i have my system recovery disk [dont really know if this disk is my recovery disk but its called [alienware microsoft windows 7 home premium SP1 64 bit] they say [ this software included on this recovery DVD-ROM was preinstalled on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your alienware computer system] well i think its the recovery disk then.

however i dont really know how to use it to recover my system, i can't do any thing unless my operating system is listed there so i can fix it...

can you please help me solve this problem...

kind regards,

I first noticed the malware a couple days ago about 5-10 minutes after downloading a chess engine called Thinker and opening it in a chess GUI called Arena. I had scanned the folder containing the engine with Avast before using it, but it said no threats detected. Earlier today I found a site called virustotal.com which scans a file on your computer with something like 53 different antivirus programs including Kaspersky, NANO, Malwarebytes, etc, etc. and all of the programs said it was clean except one called "ByteHero" which says it detects "Virus.Win32.Part.j". Anyway as I said earlier I noticed the malware 5-10 minutes after opening the engine in Arena when all of a sudden a page in my browser popped up for no reason, and soon after my screen turned into the screen that shows all users on your computer when windows loads. I immediately knew I had been infected and turned off my wireless connection and turned off the computer. When I restarted upon bootup I could immediately see weird things happening caused by the virus (I don't remember what was happening, it doesn't happen now). When I logged back into my user, I started task manager and saw a couple of the same or very similar thing under processes (again I don't remember what it was, but in the description I think it said something about "server") when I tried to end task it generated a blue screen. I tried to go into safe mode and run avast and malwarebytes to scan my computer, but the virus was doing something even i... Read more

Answer:Groove Shows Unknown Artist & Unknown Album

It's not something I've experienced and so I'm probably going to be of little help. However, out of interest do the actual song files themselves have metadata stored in them? For example, find the one of these audio files in Windows File Explorer, Right-Click > Properties > Details Tab.

If there is no metadata there, in Groove Music > Settings, is "Media Info: Automatically retrieve and update missing album art and metadata" set to on?

Also, do you have Indexing switched on in Control Panel > Indexing Options and the location where your music is stored (EG: Users folder) set to be indexed?

Guys i have a similar problem but unlike the problem above my partition magic software does not read my external HD.. The device manager shows the HD is working properly.. and the disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized.. i m giving screen shot for both of them.. My external HD is WD 1TB HD.. it does not matter if i lose the data..but i want the HD to work[ATTACH][/ATTACH]

Answer:disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery service and am awaiting a quote.

They can be troublesome with ME.You could try BigFix available from click here to update you system with the necessary patches.

I have an Asus G74S. It was working fine yesterday except for being connected to our usual home wifi yet not getting internet. Our other computer, a Mac, accessed it just fine as usual. When I tried to restart my Asus, it only gave me the option to restart Windows normally, which loops me back to the same menu, or enter System Recovery. I tried the system recovery scan 3 times (it took hours each time), restarted between each, and it just keeps bringing me back to the same menu. Perhaps it's because the screen says that it's an unknown operating system.

I can't use a System Restore because the computer says it can't find the operating system and that I need to restart and choose one, though when I restart, it brings me to the same menu and I don't see a way to choose an operating system.

I don't have a recovery disk, but I do have 3 Windows backup disks I burned when the computer was new. I was able to get into BIOS and switch the boot order to load the DVD drive first, but it just asks me if I want to load the disk image, which I don't want to do since that'll erase my files and programs.

The option to choose a system image doesn't automatically detect anything. I have the option to select some drivers. When I open that menu, I can see that my two hard drive partitions (D and E) have their remaining space and files listed, but C is blank. I can open the contents of that backup disk (I just tried the first one), but I'm not sure there are even drivers on ... Read more

So the other day I got a pain in the butt virus (GFW I think it was) http://www.sophos.com/en-us/threat-center/threat-analyses/viruses-and-spyware/W32~Rbot-GFW.aspx . Well I ran Malware-Bytes and got the infected files off. And I started up the computer again and it looked very weird. So I went looking to see if all my files were there and they were all hidden. Fixed that but it still looks weird. So I did a repair install of Windows and it still looks the same. My next step is a complete reinstall of Windows (waiting on an external I just ordered). I was wondering if I need to go that far or if there is a setting somewhere that is doing this.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

P.S. The clock/ T is rainmeter. They are supposed to be there.

Hi,I dabbled with Ubuntu on my Thinkpad x120e, but found that the dual-boot was unneccessary.  I (likely foolishly) followed directions online to use EasyBCD (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/nongeeks-guide-safely-uninstall-ubuntu-dualbooting-machine/) to overwrite GRUB.Of course, now Windows won't load!  I get an error Windows failed to start...1. Insert your Windows installation disc...2. Choose your language..3. Click "Repair your computer" If you do not have the disc, ... File: \Boot\BCDStatus: 0xc0000098Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry. I got the Operating System Recovery Disc from lenovo (thanks Lenovo for sending it) and copied it to a USB as the computer has no DVD drive.  When I start the computer from the USB and select run from USB, it begins to load Windows, then Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4...but then it crashes and restarts.  When I hit f8 and startup in SafeMode, it begins to load the safemode screen, but then also crashes.  Any advice on what to do??  Many thanks.

Hello,

If you are okay with erasing the contents of the hard disk drive, you can try booting to a Windows Command Prompt, running DISKPART.EXE, selecting the hard disk drive, and issuing a "clean" command, which will erase the disk so that the operating system can be reloaded.

I was in the process of updating several sata controllers and chipset drivers. I also installed a new USB 3.0 hub and was in the process of moving around several devices between ports. I had a problem with my keyboard which uses USB 2.0 as a connector but I would recieve a "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)" code 43 on every port on the USB 3.0 Hub. I finally gave up and put the keyboard back into the 2.0 ports on my motherboard. When I finally fixed everything. I realized my DVD drive was not working. I had to reconnect the SATA cables because it got disconnected while I was moving my PC around. Upon the last restart of my PC.

I checked Disk Managment and noticed lots of system reserved partitions and drives which were not there before. I have no idea what happened but I think updating several drivers and the combination of reinstalling USB ports via device manager or the optical drive being reconnected may have messed up how windows used to have system reserves as partitions. I only had one visible system reserved drive before, now I have 2 visible and lettered system reserved drives.

I also have a unknown partition at the top of the list, I cannot right click that partition and select any options. The only option in my context menu is Help which brings me a link to Overview of Disk Management

I also had my video quick access as my DVD optical drive when I restarted. I have fixed this issue by changing my quick access links back to their proper folders... Read more

Answer:Unknown Partition - Unknown File System - Cannot edit or remove!

Hello taqiyya6 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Your problem is actually quite basic. You are going into the Disk Managetool and seeing system reserved partitions mounted and assigned drive letters where they shouldn't be seeing any! The 450mb partition is there to allow changing from the MBR type primary to the GPT type usually seen with server set up or large volumes exceeding 2tb in size such as installing and partitioning a new 2.5tb, 3tb, 4tb, or even one of the latest 5tb drives.

The sight of the System Reserved partition being present on the second Disk 1 500gb drive simply shows that had previously seen a Windows installation on it at some time likely before adding in the large 1tb Disk 0 drive you have the present install on. The most likely to succeed option for taking care of the smaller 500gb if nothing is on it would be a complete wipe and a fresh single partition intended for storage and backup. That would eliminate the first SR but not small second unless using an open source type partiioning utility like GParted while still an option to close up the small gap since it is only a 500gb and not exceeding the 2tb mark.

For cleaning the mess overall however going into the Device Manager and knocking out drivers before a full restart would allow Windows to redetect the drives fresh without seeing the System Reserved and MBR parts mounted again at least on the OS drive being the main concern since the SR part has to remain invisible as a system protected space not mount... We need more details. Is file and print sharing enabled? Do you have other computers on a network? Is this home or business? Are you using a wireless router? Is it password protected? Is there any device that is connected that may be misinterpreted by windows as an unknown PC? You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hoping somebody can help me with this one...

I dropped my laptop while it was starting up. Needless to say, it didn't like it.

On restarting, it didn't boot properly, but went to "repairing startup errors", and hung at that point.
I dug out the retail W7 disk I used for installation (Pro x64 with SP1), and eventually got the system recovery options interface working*.
It sees the right partition, with Win7 installed, but instead of a volume label (C:, D: etc), it has (unknown), with a partition size of 0MB. I'm guessing this is why it won't boot into Windows. Sooo... how does one go about fixing this?!
Fwiw, it's a Lenovo Y410p with a single HDD, a mSATA SSD for caching, plus DVD drive.
*- I spent 90 minutes with the DVD saying that the System Recovery Options wasn't compatible with my version of Windows. Through trial and error and changing the boot mode to UEFI and back to legacy, I somehow got it working...

Answer:Volume label (unknown) in System Recovery Options

Just an update: Diskpart shows only one volume on the HDD, volume 1, C, which is the System Reserved partition of 100MB...

And bootrec.exe doesn't identify any Windows installations.

Installed new hard drive and Windows 7, wireless card shows up as unknown device.
I was having major stability issues with windows. I wanted a new hard drive so i installed it and a new copy of windows. The wireless worked fine before, and ethernet works fine now. It shows up in device manager as other devices, network controller with a yellow exclamation mark. I have gone to Dell to install the driver. It almost finishes then says you do not have a recognized wireless device.

My comp is a Dell Inspiron M5010, I installed windows 7 HP 64 bit same as what was on before. WHDPC, K5Y6D are the numbers I have found for the card. I have tried several different drivers and all have the same error.

Any idea how to get windows to recognize the card so the drivers I install will recognize it? There are many threads about this in various places, but none of the solutions work.

Answer:wireless card shows up as unknown after windows reinstall

Have you entered your service tag number from Dell.
That should tell you what was installed when you purchased the computer and point to the correct drivers.

Hello,

My main worry is checking out the multiple conhost/csrss and svchost at startup, after the event detailed below...

Recently after installing Teamspeak and not actually getting all addons necessary to join people in an ARMA3 game, I noticed I was having slowdowns.

I did a windows recovery to before the install and it seemed to fix the slowdowns but I'm a little paranoid about both the teamspeak download and the ARMA3 addon downloads---Given that I have a few conhost.exe at startup and several svchost. I'm not sure when they started being there. They are not there in safe mode when I scanned.

(I have to note that the recovery didn't fully complete because of some form of disc problem, but the installs seemed to be removed form registry and I deleted the Teamspeak files--- Running "sfc /scannow" apparently fixed everything from its perspective)

I run Malwarebytes (recently added anti-exploit), and have Kapersky installed from my motherboard software package.
I have run Malwarebytes anti-rootkit.

The conhosts and the csrss processes I think are normal, just right click and click properties to make sure it is signed by Microsoft, and is in C:\Windows\System32

Please help me folks, I'm on borrowed time today.

I had to reformat my computer thanks to a handful of Trojans and of course, I am missing the Ethernet driver to connect. In the past, I had a friend set me up, but he never told me how to do it and he's gone in basic training so I can't ask for his help today.

I have a custom-built Compaq HP
I will have Windows XP HOME installed when I get the cash.

What I need is help figuring out where to look to find the model number to install the correct driver. I have tried the HP website and it does not work; My driver is built into the motherboard.

I currently have Windows XP Professional for English Students, it's my father's OS

I suggest you replace your registry hives from the backup.

You need windows boot media of some kind - the installation disc, or the win7 repair disc you ran off will do fine.

There is a tutorial explaining one method of doing here:

Hi!
I wanted to know, if the recovery disk which has been delivered with my Toshiba computer deletes *all* the information from the hard drive, *or is there any possibility, that damaged software (malware) that has been installed on my computer some time before resists after using recovery disk ?*

If I use my recovery disk the program just asks me if I wish to delete my hard drive and informs me that all my data will be destroyed if I use this recovery CD". After this single question it begins with the recovery process. Is it "normal for that disk, that it does not ask me any further questions about "which partition will I recover and so on and it begins with recovering after this single question?

What cleaning disk from Toshiba could I use otherwise, if this recovery disk does not delete all the old information from the hard drive to ensure that *everything* from my last hard drive is cleaned up?

Thanks for answer!

Answer:Does recovery disk really delete all information from old operating system?

Hi,

If you use the Toshiba recovery disk, all data will be erased on the HDD.

Before the reinstalling starts, the HDD will be formatted. Malware and other software will be erased.

So you don?t need an other disk or program to erase the HDD.

Try it and you will see it works. But first, backup your data.

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Answer:Bootmgr is Missing - Cant load Recovery Disk as Operating System not found

Hi, we do seem to be getting a lot of boot issues lately, this is a summary of what to do, produced by a Tech after a MS boot camp.
I have put code marks around your best option (that is after startup repair failed to resolve the issue):-

You can use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to troubleshoot and repair the following items in Windows Vista or Windows 7:
? A master boot record (MBR)
? A boot sector
? A Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store
Note When you are troubleshooting startup issues by using the Windows RE, you should first try the Startup Repair option in the System Recovery Options dialog box. If the Startup Repair option does not resolve the issue, or if you must troubleshoot more steps manually, use the Bootrec.exe tool.
MORE INFORMATION
To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then clickNext.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

How do I know whether my IP is correct when this picture from http://www.show-ip.com/ shows wrong Operating Sytem as Windows NT even though when I have Windows 8.1 ? I am waiting for  Windows 10 on 29 July 2015. How can I get rid of this Windows NT used by hackers to fool my Operating System instead of Windows 8.1 ?

Answer:Show My IP Shows Windows NT Operating System

Windows NT is not an operating system. Windows NT is a family of operating systems produced by Microsofthttp://microsoft.wikia.com/wiki/Windows_NTThe various operating systems are part of that family.Think of it like this:Your family is a group of people related to each other. Each one of us is an individual member of a family. The different versions of Windows are the individual members of the NT family. The wiki link I posted in the quote has a chart of Windows NT Releases. What you are seeing has nothing to do with hackers. For what it's worth, show my ip also tells me Windows NT. My operating system is Windows 7.

For a while my computer has refused to start Windows. It would get to the screen with the Windows logo and then no further.

I have not replaced any of the hardware since I bought it, and as far as I am aware this problem came on the back of nothing. (It didn't follow any installation of software or hardware.)

Since there is nothing of too much importance on it I decided to reinstall Windows, but after the setup had started it reached the screen from which I was to choose which drive to install Windows to and each was listed as "Unknown Disk." Pressing any button resulted in a blue screen.

If I even attempt to load without using the disk I just get a black screen prompting me to enter the setup disk.

I am currently at work and so cannot post the precise specifications of my computer, though I will as soon as I get home.

In the meantime I gather that I need to look in BIOS to see if my hard drive is being recognised?

I have Googled this problem but each response was slightly over my head, since I'm not sure what type of harddrive I have (though I will once I get home, I have all the documentation).

Though I do not consider myself too dense when it comes to computers, I am not confident enough to fiddle about in BIOS without instructions.

I would like to thank you in advance for any help that you can provide, it would be very much appreciated.

Okay so this is my problem:

I have been having this problem for a couple of days now. I have a Western Digital Caviar 120GB IDE Drive connected to my computer, and Windows XP doesn't seem to recognize it, all 4 of the hard drives on the Windows XP install says "Unknown Disk - There is no disk in this drive" If I press enter, it gives me the BSOD. If I press D, it gives me the BSOD. If I press any key it gives me the freaking BSOD. So I checked my BIOS and it only recognizes my DVD-RW Drive and my CD Drive. I started getting confused. I didn't know what the problem was. I believe this is how much in depth I can go through with this, I really need some help fixing this.

Answer:Windows XP Install - Unknown Disk

Ok, what IDE channel do you have the 120 GB HDD plugged into, i.e. Primary Master/Slave or Secondary Master/Slave. Where is the DVD-RW and CD drive plugged into? Is the HDD and the Optical drives on separate cables or on the same IDE cable? How do you have the Jumper pins set? The way it should be setup is your HDD should have the jumper pin set to Master or CS (Cable Select), most new drives come set as CS by default, depending if you have one of the Optical Drives on the same cable. The HDD should be on the end of the IDE cable, any other drives should be sharing the Middle or not at all. The Primary slot/cable should be the one you are using for the HDD. If there is an optical drive on the same cable, it's jumper pin should either be Slave or CS. The Red stripe on the edge of the IDE cable should be pointing towards the Power Plug of the HDD Drive. And the other end should be facing the same direction as all the other IDE cables on the motherboard signifying Pin 1. Make sure the IDE cable is plugged in tight to the drive and to the Motherboard, and that the power plug is plugged in tight. Once you have the jumper pin set correctly, make sure the drive is showing up in the Bios. If it still fails, then if there is a drive sharing the same cable, remove it for the time being.

Hello,

I have used the tittle from another thread as my issue is very similar, only none of what is posted there worked for me.

So I have a WD 500gb HDD. (Actually I am not 100% sure it is a HDD and not a SDD)
I have plugged it in various PC and laptops. When doing so, you get the usual sound que. It also installs the driver according to the little pop up window.
However after that, the drive is not visible in "My Computer".

When I check the drive in Computer Management>Disk Management, it wants me to initialise the disk. Which, I know I do not want to do (thanks to one of your earlier posts) as this will over write my data.
In Disk Management the disk is "Unknown" and "Not Initialised" It also does not give any volume. Pics of both of these attached.

I have tried using Partition Wisord free. It does not even see the drive.
I have tried using Photorec. It does not see the drive.
I have used R-Studio. It does see the disk, but I am not able to scan it. Again also no disk volume. Again Picture attached.

I am hopeful for a solution, as I feel like the symptoms suggest that I do not have a head misalignment. But I might be wrong on that.

Hoping for someone with some mad skills to help me out here.

Thanks in advance!

I replaced the motherboard on my Dell 8200 desktop with the exact same board, more powerful CPU. Popped in the CPU, cards, cables, etc. Machine powered right up, everything was groovy.

Then I tried to play a CD ? machine shut down, rebooted. I looked in Devices; everything was there EXCEPT the CD-Rom drives. They were at the bottom of the tree in a grey square labeled Unknown. Inside were the 2 drives, properly labeled but showing as unknown devices. Attempted to reinstall drivers, but machine couldn?t find drivers (do CD-Rom & CD-RW even need drivers?).

Swapped Primary & Secondary IDE cables, no luck. Did an uninstall (of both CDRW & CDROM) & reboot, same thing. Did a safe boot, removed Unknown devices & rebooted, same thing.

Machine is a Dell Dimension 8200, P4 2.8 GHz, 400 fsb, 1024 MHz RDRAM. Drives are an LG CDROM, & TDK Velo 24x10x40 CDRW.

How do I get this thing to recognize my CDROM & CDRW drives correctly?

Thanks & take care,
Hawkeye

Hi,

I use Mcaffe Security Centre, which has a very nice diagram of my Network and whats on it, which includes:

1 x PC (192.168.2.2)
2 x Laptop's
1 x Belkin Router (192.168.2.1) Connected directly into my PC.

Connected to the Internet all good working fine.

But there is also a terminal (a PC symbol), called "Unknown 192.168.2.5"

Does anyone know what this is or how do I check what this is or what it does?
Is someone hacking me, how do I cut them off?

Appreciate any help, I am pretty new to Networking and only have HOME experience.

Thanks, Simon.

Dell Dimension 5000, Belkin Wireless G Router, Windows XP Home, Dell Inspiron Laptops, Virgin Media Cable Connection

Answer:My NETWORK shows an unknown Item 192.168.2.5 ?

Hi Simonwar,
We don't think there is any other client connected to the router. If the computer is both wired and wireless, that might show two different IP Addresses. Make sure the wireless security on your router is enabled, so that no one can connect to your router wirelessly. 192.168.2.5 could be a static ip address also. Make sure the ip address on your computer should be assigned by the DHCP.

To isolate this issue you can login to 192.168.2.1 and check that out. Please follow the steps given below:

1. Open an Internet Explorer and type in "192.168.2.1" in the address bar without any quotation mark and press Enter.
2. Click on Login, by default the password might be blank and click submit.
3. Click on DHCP Client List on the left hand side of the page.
4. You can view the Client name and the Client's MAC Address and the ip address which is connected to your router.

Note : If that is a wireless client, you will have to enable the wireless security on your router. That will automatically get disconnected as soon as you enable the wireless security on your router.

If the problem persists, please get back to us with the following information:
1. Model and version number of the router?
2. Number of the computers connected to the router (Wired and Wireless)?
3. If the IP Address is assigned manually on one of the computers?

Thank you.

I just rebuilt a computer (XP3200 to Q6600) for someone who has tons of software installed and thus does not want to reinstall (neither do I, because it would be an immense hassle on my end). I was about to attempt a repair install using my retail XP disc (using his product key, I assure you), but the damn thing lists both of the SATA drives as unknown partitions.

Booting to a Symantec System Recovery disc, however, show both drives intact. And, in fact, the system does try to load Windows if booted normally (BSOD, of course).

So I'm sitting here scratching my head. This process has been a complete nightmare (the details of which are irrelevent to the current problem) and I feel like my brain's just not working at this point, so I'm reaching out for help. Can anyone explain to me (use small words, I don't think I could process anything above a third grade level right now) what would cause the XP disc to not see the partitions properly?

Update: I grabbed the latest SATA drivers to load during setup. When I'd accidentally used my XP upgrade disc to run setup it had seen the partitions without issue, so I'm not sure why the actual XP disc would have a problem. Regardless, that seems to have done it. I think this is the first time I've seen setup detect the drives but fail to recognize the partitions due to a driver issue. Anyone else come across that?

Answer:HELP: XP Setup Shows Unknown Partitions... why?

The very first thing that should be looked at is the BSOD. The codes from the BSOD will let us pinpoint the problem.

I am involved with a small band of new user older generation silver surfers.A question that keeps cropping up, is the re-installation of the various operating systems, mainly ME and XP Home with a little 98se.They want to know [in printed form]what will or could happen if they inserted their operating disk in their computer.Would this re-install, reformat or destroy their system. This question came to light recently, due to the fact that a couple of people are having boot-up, crash or similar problems and they want to try some of the technical stuff themselves. Using the advantage of this forum may ease their concern a little.A warning as to what can go wrong or perhaps best be avoided, would be appreciated.

Answer:Re-Installing Operating Systems for the Unknown.

the worst that can happen is they may lose their data if they accidentally format the drive with disk, you should tell them to back up all important data before considering putting the disk in the drive, even if it's for something relatively simple, back-up, back-up and back-up again!!

have an LG slim portable DVD writer. model GP30NB30.

to be honest i don't know if this thing got switched out of my desk drawer with some other model usb dvd writer i had been using which worked. i have a few of these portable usb dvd drives and they all look the same, but i'm pretty sure this one has worked.

went to use it today and on work computers where i'm pretty sure it has worked in the past, now windows shows it as "unrecognized device, driver not installed". This was on some computers that have not had windows update in a while, some of which are off network lab computers which are pretty reliable and never have a problem. I tried it on a test pc that has all windows updates as of now, same deal.
In device manager it shows up as a problem device with yellow triangle.

I try it on my home pc, and that says driver installed but then shows up as Unkown Device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in device manager. I did windows update with it connected as unknown device and windows update did not help. go under device manager and look at the properties of device, Hardware ID comes up as unknown. The driver key property shows up as

In every case, this usb dvd writer never shows up under my computer, or in disk manager.

The driver verifier program, Verifier.exe, shows 4 drivers from "unknown provider".

The Drivers tab of Autoruns.exe does not show these.

Neither PowerShell nor Windows Explorer finds them and yes, I even specifically looked in Windows\system32\drivers.

The quick Malware Bytes scan and the quick MSE scan found nothing.

Here is a snip from the driver listing shown by Verifier (sorted so that the unknowns show up first).

Answer:Verifier shows drivers from unknown provider

The ones beginning with dump are typical in a crash scenario. The top one is the default sata driver supplied by windows, don't know why it's showing as unknown provider.
It does happen though...
They are usually emergency drivers just for the purpose of writing a dump file.

The last one I am unaware of, being stuck on my laptop I don't have immediate access to my usual resources though.

I have two services that show up under services in the Computer Manager: Nwcdbh02ist and Udfstapteet

They also show up in the Ultimate TroubleShooter. In that program, when I click on "Explore Services Folder" for each of these services, I get a message saying that the folder cannot be found.

The Computer Management provides no information about either service other than they are both set to manual, local service and that there are no dependencies on them in either direction. Both services are stopped - I did not set them that way.

Any ideas of what these are? I've already searched the file database here on BleepingComputer and got nothing. A Google search also brings up nothing. Given the rather Germanic appearance to the name, I think Udfstapteet might be related to SpyBot's TeaTimer which I had installed for a while, but I'm not sure.

Answer:Computer Management Shows Unknown Services

Well, I have discovered one small bit of information. In looking at my HiJack this Log, I have found that Nwcdbh02ist is connected with the NVIDIA Corporation. In googling that company I find that they deal with Graphic cards and video software including software that decodes DVD's for Windows Media player and Microsoft Media Player.

Since my graphic card doesn't appear to be from NVIDIA, I'm left with the conclusion that is related to my media players. I'll have to see if I can play a DVD, and if I can't I'll have to figure out how to get the rest of the software this service belongs to.

I have a Dell desk top computer about 10 years old. I noticed in the Add/Remove in my control panel that there are several download installations from HP that I didn't add. Why would I have HP on a Dell computer? Would it hurt anything if I uninstall all these HP downloads if they are not being used?

Answer:XP Add Remove Program shows unknown HP installations

Before you uninstall anything you might want to check in MSCONFIG--STARTUP to see if anything from HP is running and then decide if you need it. I seem to recall some HP software/drivers that are used by other systems as well. But if it's just the updates, online store and solutions center then yeah, that's just BS and can be removed.

I have a small home network (3 PCs and a laptop). These are all with a single cable connected to my router. The wireless signal, I use just to be able to home with my tablet on the internet and GSM. My modem Eurodoc 3.0 is a wireless modem with router. (An all-in-one device Telenet). When I ask a view of my network , I see a switch wich wasn't there before, Compal Broadband Networks, Inc. CH6541. The MAC address of this is almost exactly the same as the MAC address of my router, only the last digit / symbol is different. I found this odd. When I contact my provider Telenet, they say I do have no switch. I find it very strange that in my statement still spot a switch, which also has almost the same MAC address as my router. Further I see on my list 2 APs (WAP121) while I have no additional access points in the home. I suspect that in my list are the details of my neighbors. Can anyone give me some clarity here? Then i bought a Western Digital 1TB hard-disk a while ago and installed it on Windows 8 64bits.

I put all my data from long time ago in it and used it for about 5 months.

It was all fine 10 hours ago when I decided to install Windows 7 64bits (in place of Windows Eight). I formated one hard disk entirely (didn't mess anything with the others) and successfully installed Windows 7.

After the process was done I started Windows 7. The problem is that I noticed that Windows 7 doesn't seem to be able to deal with my WD 1Tb Hard Disk .Windows 7 can see it in Disk Management but doesn't even recognize the Free Space and the Used Space (should be 470gb used).

View image: 3
I can't even assign a letter to it, the only option I have is to Delete it. I tried many others software and they do the same, they partly recognize the 1TB hard drive, but doesn't seem to able to detect free-space and used space. They also seem not to be able to do anything with it but to able to delete it.The only thing they do is point out it's GPT.

Here are the Print Screens :

I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong with this disk in the Windows 7 installation process, and I didn't format it and didn't try to do anything with it.

The data I have on it is really important and I can't aff... Read more

Answer:Windows 7, GPT and Unknown file system

Do you see the drive in my computer? can you run check disk on it? Are you able to boot into safe mode and see if you can access it this way? The drive may have failed. This is why its important to keep things backed up.
I would suggest trying out minitool partition wizard and see if that program can detect it. It may just need to be set as an active drive or be set as logical. I would try that software out, and see what you can do. Another alternative is to boot into a live linux cd and see if you can see your data. If you do not know how to do this, I can give you step by step. I would unplug the drive if your using your computer and not trying to get the data off. If the drive is failing, you do not want it connected to power otherwise the disk will fail quicker. Especially with sensitive date on it, your first task should be trying to get the data off the drive.

Hi there,

First, i'm running 64-bit Windows 8.1

My issues is that when i run ccleaner to clean my computer Norton insight alert pops up showing that i'm downloading unkown exe files. This has happend a few times and don't know why. One of the file names was $RZDTPML.EXE. I believe file was downloaded to $recycle.bin but the source of the file is unknown.  When i tried to locate the file after the first alert message from norton insight it states that the file can not be found.  Don't know if this is a true issues or just a glitch with norton insight.  All virus scans (malwarebytes, hitman pro free, norton) show that my system is clean.

Thanks for your help!
John

Hello
I got my 1tB WD external disk and it's not working as it used to. The problem came from nowhere, suddenly, totally unexpected. There is/was my precious data on it which I collected for 10+ years and I'd like not to lose it.

Origin:
It was working fine a day ago, no problems occured. Hasn't been unplugged since then. Has never fallen. Has never had any kind of error. But: I've seen some kind of ".COM not responding" problem on my PC (don't remember, closed it immediately). I believe my laptop is in a good and healthy condition.

So, what my WD HDD does is:
- it can be seen as a device by my computer. I can plug it out safely.
- diode shows that it's working (not showing the data transfer activity)
- nothing else

What I see in Device Management/Storage is (as in the title):
Screenshot by Lightshot

What programs I used to try to restore partition:
- Mini tool Partition Recovery Home Edition (quick and deep scan, no results. Shows disk as a Bad Disk)
http://prntscr.com/2wpy8s
- Mini tool Power Data Recovery (pro, non-free tool, however after scan there was no results)
- Find and Mount (no results)
- TestDisk (quick and deep scan, no results)

What I haven't tried doing is connecting the HDD directly to the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Answer:External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

Hi !

I have this kind of a problem: I am working with my external Toshiba 3,5 alu case HDD 500GB and after a while of copying files into laptop it dissappears and shows up that device wasn?t recognised.
Can this be caused by not enough power in USB port?

THX for any help or workaround

Answer:Satellite A200-1SI - external HDD after a while shows up "unknown device"

Hi there,

yes this may be caused by the fact there is not enough power supplied by the USB port. firstly note that 3.5inch external USB hard drives are usually designed to be used with desktop systems due to their higher power requirements (this is also the reason that many require an external power supply of their own). my suggestion would be in future buy a 2.5inch external USB hard drive designed for use with laptops. another reason that the hard drive may disappear while copying files is that there may be a problem with the USB cable connection between the laptop and the external HDD. i would suggest checking that both ends are plugged in securely and not to place any pressure on the cables and to keep them stable.

i hope this helps you with your matter

I have a dell studio 15 laptop Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. I got this laptop in November 2008, since then it was working fine just when I returned from Germany o india its not working. initially i thought disk got damaged due to x-ray scanning on airports but I read several threads on internet which says it does not erases/damages hard disks same I have also experienced during my several visits in which same laptop has gone through with this scanning process.

I tried to recover my OS by using OS DVD provided with the laptop. I booted my laptop by setting up the bootable device as DVD in BIOS but it does not help me to recover. I tried to install Windows XP also in C derive so that I can see the data(i.e. my all useful and important) present in D derive but its is not allowing me to install windows XP too on it.

While searching information, I came to know that it seems like its a issue of Windows Vista Home Premium and several people have faced the same . In one solution, it is mentioned that OS DVD provided with laptop may not have files to boot and recover so i downloaded a bootable files and tried with that too but that also does not work for me but it has worked for others as per reviews mentioned.

When I reboot my laptop from OS DVD priovided from the dell, I used to get an following errors:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM
Operating System Not found"
FYI- I run a diagnostic test also and all tests got ... Read more

Hello, well I'm trying to fix my mom's PC... and I do not know if I made any progression. To tell you the truth I don't know what this thing even is. Is it a really nasty AV-busting virus or is it some bad spyware? I looked up a similar thread on Google and did what it told me, but I don't know if anything actually happened. All my AV's are disabled (I only have 2 actually) so I downloaded HiJackThis. Here's the log:

I REALLY WILL STOP SURFING PORN NOW

pops up new ie windows (not tabs) that link to random sites, often unknown search engines showing results for last string searched on google, often for other random things (news 6 live, adfat, sals barbershop). seemingly benign.

After some time of this, more serious infections occur, including antivirus soft, many others.

Malabytes will knock out what it brings in, but not kill the initial infection.

have run malabytes in safe mode, safe mode + neworking, and mutiple times after knocking out later more malicious infections in both safe mode and regular. Sometimes picks up a few stragglres, sometimes not. But in all cases I still have the original thing which pops up a new ie window to some odd thing and presumably opens the door for the rest.

Any help greatly appreciated, and, really, despite any other sex life to speak of, sad though that may be, I will leave the porn sites alone after this.

Answer:unknown infection, seemingly benign popups to unknown sites, followed by more extensive problems

I loaded up explorer and opened up my C:/ drive to start a game in my program files, accidentally pressing "Downloads" finding this file there, my operating system is Swedish so the folder should be named "Hämtningar" (Swedish for downloads). The file is 93 kb in size and was created on the 27th january, there is also an account named "Unknown account(S-1-5-21-a bunch of numbers)" with total control, I also have no ability to remove it. I would like some help with this, malwarebytes also doesn't react on it. I've also noticed I'm unable to visit Bing (not like I use it, but still weird) with the access denied error.

Recently my computer (Dell Dimension 8100, Win98SE) developed a problem with Outlook. I tried everything to resolve it, including uninstall and reinstall. I finally reformatted and reloaded everything. On the first time around it didn't automatically reload the chipset and I had never had that happen before, so I missed it completely and loaded other hardware before I realized that I had then screwed up the IRQ settings, so I reformatted and reloaded again. I also upgraded from IE 5.0 to IE 6.0.

I'm also having problems where if Outlook is receiving mail a Word document will not load until it is done. There is a severe delay in windows opening from one application to another at different times that I can't pin down.

Sometimes the screen doesn't refresh properly.

I had continual problems trying to install Shockwave and Flash, so I restored IE 5.0 and upgraded to 5.5. I now regularly have a problem with this. I can load the animated Flash egreetings cards, however, when I do the Shockwave Daily Jigsaw puzzle I get to the point where I click on 'Play Game', IE hangs and I got the following errors two different times:

This is the Ricoh card drivers for your SD card on the front.  You have the same PC as me.. the drivers on the Lenovo website do not appear to support this reader and none exist in Windows update. Some beta drivers on this website installed support for one of the devices but gives an error for the other.

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

Maybe you can have someone analyze dump files and figure out what's causing this issue.  You can wait for one of the staff to reply or you can ask at Microsoft Answers as well.

I was just about to go to bed when I logged in via remote desktop to to my Media Center PC to schedule a show to record when the Windows update notification popped up. I have it set to install updates automatically on Sundays, but since no shows were scheduled to record for the rest of the night I decided to go ahead and install the updates. After it was done and rebooted I logged in to check and make sure everything was OK.

Now when I run any system program (mmc.exe, task manager, etc.) that usually doesn't require a UAC prompt, I now get a UAC prompt showing publisher unknown. I have the Sysinternals process explorer installed, and when I run it as administrator it shows the publisher correctly as Microsoft Corporation. I checked and there are no errors in the event viewer.

I figured it has something to do with security certificates. I ran sfc /verifyonly and it finds errors, so I ran sfc /scannow and let it repair. After rebooting it didn't fix it though. Running sfc /verifyonly again it still shows errors, and running sfc /scannow this time and I get "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." In the CBS.log file there aren't any lines with "Cannot repair member file" in it, but there are a lot of other things.

Since this is a Media Center PC, it is recording TV shows daily, so I have limited time to do anything that requires rebooting or shutting down. I have to go to bed, I've already stayed up wa... Read more

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. I ran HijackThis as you do and saw the following line which I removed.
Internet Settings, ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:19876When running DDS in the dds.txt file I found these settings which may be unrelated but I cannot explain them.TCP: Interfaces\{5D969EFE-1A71-4BC0-950C-B6214B4FC1DD} : DHCPNameServer = 88.82.13.60 88.82.13.60When I found these items I ran CCleaner just to lighten the amount I needed to scan. Then I ran ComboFix and Malwarebytes Antimalware and found nothing. I then used GMER and removed a virtual cdrom that had been sitting on my computer long after Deamon Tools had been removed.
It is the proxy server that worries me. Doing a quick search of it there does seem to be a Trojan keylogger that will listen on that port.

Could I create a complete operating system disk and drivers on 1 dvd copying the Windows folder in programs files. Looking forward to your input. Thank you. KCBC

Answer:Creating a Windows 7 Professional Operating System Disk

Hi,
Yes, it's possible but it's not for wimps! It took me 2 years to create Windows7 32bit and 64bit boot discs of my own. Microsoft has scrubbed most of the legit images from the web, so 97% of them are bogus or don't work. I've got some that I used; can't guarantee they still work. Here's some to try:
Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River#
Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads | Windows 7 Forums
Download Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO ( 32bit / 64bit ) from Microsoft

I've had the best luck with these 3; but due to Microsoft's policies don't wait too long to try them as they may be gone by next week or next month!

Once you download a Windows7 Pro ISO file, I recommend you use the free IMGburn program in my signature link below. If you attempt to create the boot disc on flash drive, use WiNToBootIC. This takes more work however.

You'll then have to go to support.dell.com and download the Windows7 Pro drivers for the Optiplex760. Be sure to install the BIOS flash upgrade first, then the Chipset drivers, then audio, then video, then utilities, then apps, and everything else. Reinstallation of the drivers in this order is MANDATORY! Failure to do so will result in a failed Windows installation almost everytime.

Your alternative is to call Dell on the phone and order the Optiplex 760 RECOVERY DISCS; you can purchase directly from Dell for $29-$99. They take about 2-3 weeks to get shipped to you.

p.s. Don't forget that once ... Read more

We bought a Thinkcentre M72Z PC with a windows 7 downgrade.  The PC came with the Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation required) operating system recovery disc but I cannot load Windows 8 from it.  Does anyone know what steps I have to take to use this disc?  It says the media is provided for recovery purposes, but it is not like an install disc.

What should my expectations be after successfully using the Dell-provided "Download Operating System Recovery Image" for Windows 10 Pro x64 on a Precision 5510 laptop?
I successfully downloaded and wrote the "Windows 10 Pro - 64-Bit" image to a USB drive, and successfully used the "Recover from a drive" option as described.  But the resulting Windows 10 Pro x64 installation looked little different than if I had simply taken retail Microsoft Windows 10 Pro x64 1511 (November 2015) installation media and performed a clean installation.
Meaning it didn't appear to restore "a Dell-customized Windows installation", nor "specifically prepared for the Precision 5510."  Device Manager still had about a dozen drivers missing that Windows wouldn't pick up from locally installed drivers or Windows Update, etc.  I was expecting the "Download Operating System Recovery Image" to approximately match the shipping factory image for the Precision 5510.  At least for drivers and hardware, if not also installed support software.
Since it's still based on the November 2015 release of Windows 10, the image clearly isn't "the latest".  Note the .ISO the Dell Support site provided for me to download was "2DF4FA00_W10x64ROW_pro(DL)_v3.iso", which based on the dates inside the ISO, was prepared in March 2016.
Just wondering if this is a clue of me still not doing some... Read more

Answer:Windows 10 Pro x64 Operating System Recovery Image for Precision 5510

One item in my description needs to be corrected:
Indeed, when I successfully use the Dell "Operating System Recovery Image" and haven't granted any network access to the machine, the Windows 10 Pro 1511 installation the recovery image provides doesn't have the drivers for the Precision 5510 devices.  (~12 items without drivers in Device Manager.)
But I also said once connected to the network and using Windows Update, it wasn't finding the drivers either.  That appears to be incorrect, and was actually a symptom of the NVIDIA driver package taking a _long_ time to come down from Windows Update.  Given enough time, the Device Manager will show 100% device coverage, for either the Dell "Operating System Recovery Image" Windows 10 Pro 1511 installation, or for a normal retail Windows 10 Pro 1607 installation without using the recovery image.
So the question remains, what is the expected outcome from using the Dell "Operating System Recovery Image"?  I don't see anything in the results of successfully using that image which are Dell-specific, nor Precision 5510-specific.  But the Dell "Operating System Recovery Image" is 6GB+, as compared to the 4GB Microsoft Windows 10 installation ISO.  So it seems like "there is something more in there", but I'm just not seeing it or not using it correctly.
