Reasonable explanation for crashes?

Question: Reasonable explanation for crashes?

A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation was corrupted because of the bad ram.

So, finally, some questions.
1. If the ram was incompatible with the MB could I have run at all? Could it have caused intermittent problems?

2. I had OCZ DDR3 memory cards and a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R MB. Is this memory incompatible with the MB? I've recently heard that OCZ memory is not very high quality. Is that generally true?

3. Can bad ram (and crashes cause by it) corrupt Windows? I can see how the registry could get corrupted but would that take a reinstallation of Windows to fix?

Preferred Solution: Reasonable explanation for crashes?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

Crash/error situation (occurs in several games eg GTA:IV, farcry)

For exmaple, in the game saints row 2, i'll be playing for about 20-40 minutes.

Then, randomly (ie not necessarily at high load times) the fan will go to full speed, and the display will turn off.

The music runs for another 10-15 seconds properly but the keyboard isn't responsive

Then, the music/sound gets stuck in a loop and yeh I have to manually reboot...

No blue screen displayed and no error message when os starts back up...

This is what I've done so far to try and fix-
Used drivercleaner and re-installed latest (8.12) drivers- Didn't help

Tested RAM – Ram works fine

Ran games on both XP & Vista OS's- Crashes on both (same issue present on both OS's)

Tried installing microsoft 'hotfixes'- None helped

Disable UAC- Didn't help

Disabled windows aero- Didn't help

Downclocked GPU-Didn't help

Monitored temps of CPU & GPU before crash- Temp's normal

Updated DirectX- Didn't help

Updated BIOS of motherboard- Didn't help

Updated BIOS of video card- Didn't help

I'm thinking it might be my PSU (its a generic cheap 550W one) but if thats the case, why does it still happen with games on low settings? Wouldn't it be that when the games are really demanding it draws more power? I don't have another PSU to test it with....

Just a warning, this will be long. I'll try to summarize at the end in bold.

I had an 8800GT that I stepped-up with EVGA to the 8800GTS (only so I can step up to the 9800GX2 when it comes out or some other card since I extended 90 more days). When I took my 8800GT out of my case and put my old 7800GT in, the Windows Login screen was all jagged and you couldn't read anything. I thought it was a driver problem since I didn't uninstall the drivers but I don't think that's the case (keep reading). Eventually, after uninstalling the nvidia drivers completely (courtesy of DriverCleaner) I eventually put my OLD ATI x700 in. It worked so I was somewhat happy that my machine could work, but I had a crappy video card that can't run WoW or CoD4.

Randomly, a day later, I thought I'd give the 7800GT another shot. To my surprise it worked! Somehow something changed to allow it to work. I uninstalled the ATI driver, installed the nVidia ones and everything seemed good.

Now, the PC crashes randomly during games. At first the PC crashed the moment I pulled WoW up and logged in. Then I rebooted and it crashed after about two minutes. Now it crashes after a good 15 minutes or so of playing. I left the PC running all night and it was fine, so it seems it's the video card. I believed it was to begin with, seeing as how it didn't work before making the Windows Login screen all randomly shifted and distorted, but this further strengthens that assumption

Since it only crashes during games I figu... Read more

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Answer:Would you consider this advice to be reasonable?

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

Hey all,

I've been running my system under full load for twenty minutes.

I've got RMClock, CPU-Z and ATITool open to monitor, and I'm also using Orthos to stress my RAM and my CPU.

LeadTek 7950GT TDH 256MB -- 90 degrees
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?! It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base. What they offered is even more absurd! They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it. We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!! Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

this is what i am looking at. and im hoping to get some suggestions and hopfuly hear from someone who has it- - ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Answer:help picking the best reasonable 1155 mobo available

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

My other question is how much does it cost to upgrade Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit? My software source (school) only sells the 32bit versions (for hella cheap).

Should I suck it up and get Vista Home 64bit from Newegg for $99 or try to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit (which hopefully would be cheaper)?

Answer:what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Buy the 32bit version from your school, and acquire a 64bit disc by other means. Your serial will work on either (Vista/Win7 are both this way).

My wireless router does not seem to be working for Internet connectivty despite many reboots. It's (Netgear fm114p) been in use for less about 10 months. The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

I have Comcast cable. The Motorola Surfboard modem is connected to my desktop via Ethernet cable. I occasionally have to work with friend's laptops, and need to connect to the Web wirelessly, so am considering getting a wireless router. Trouble is, I can't find much info on the Web that tells me what I need, and prices go from $25 to $1200. I figure I only need something very simple, since I have no home network or multiple computers throughout the house.

So, can anyone recommend a good and relatively inexpensive router? Review in PC World liked the Belkin N, but have no idea if that's suitable or overkill or what.

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

Pulling my hair out here...

I just got a new monitor, and while installing that accidentally uninstalled the network card. Whoops. Talked to tech support and they said I had to do a reinstall of Windows to get it back, pretty much. So I did, checking "keep files". All went well, until I tried to get into my files. I used to share this computer with others so all of my files under "My Documents" were unshareable under the old system - I'm assuming that's why, when I tried to get to *my* user data, it kept telling me no. After some searching, I found a webpage telling me to reboot in safe mode, go into the folder properties, and reset the owner of those files to my new profile. I did, and everything was restored - except that the files in My Pictures and My Music are all still unaccessible. I can get to them, I can view them, the properties show that they have sizes which seem reasonable for full, normal files - but when I open any of my photos I get nothing - in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, for instance, I get "no preview available". I've tried renaming the files, moving them, copying them, e-mailing them - nothing. The music files are the same - look normal, but when I try and play them they open up as a 0 second music file. Name and info is available, but no music.

I write screenplays and direct them, act in them, what not and I'm hoping to finally upgrade to a better video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker. Now, I have no big complaints about WMM, its been very kind to me and user friendly, but I've way over-used all the transitions and video effects they have to offer. Also, my ideal software would have the ability to put a clip on top of a clip. I don't even know if that's possible, but it sounds like a neat idea to me sense I don't have a green screen handy! I essentially skipped Vista completely (bought it with the hardware, installed it, then discarded it) and started with the 7000 beta. Am currently toying with 7077 on a new, 3-week-old monster machine that needs to shift into productive use very soon.

Moving the "Documents and Settings" folder was easy back in XP days. It appears to be a lot more complicated now. However, after a bit of reading, I've come up with the following:
Clean install (in this case, 7077 x64) as user 'username'
Enable 'Administrator' account
Log out of 'username' and log into 'Administrator'
Continue with computer setup using the 'Administrator' account
Delete both the account and files for 'username'
Hack the registry to alter the location for new user accounts
-- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList]
-- Replace '%SystemDrive%\Users' with 'D:\Users' for the 'ProfilesDirectory' key
Create a new account for 'username' with admin privileges which appears as D:\Users\username\...
Log out of the 'Administrator' account (leaving it active and located in the C:\Users folder)
Log into the new 'username' admin account and go about business as usual.
(There will be four additional non-admin accounts created on this machine -- all of them located in the D:\Users folder.)
My question is: Does this seem a valid approach to separating the Users folder from the system drive? Or, am I setting myself up for problems?

I need to replace a TP-Link N600 router that is constantly dropping G-wifi. The N seems stable enough but TP-Link customer disservice is working at it's peak. Totally hopeless. I have been trying to get them to to take it back for warranty-repairs and all they keep telling me to do is update the firmware.

I had done that before I even contacted them the first time. I am now using some of their Beta firmware and still no change. I have had it with TP-Link.

So, looking for 4 x Gigabit LAN, G and N wifi at 450 to 600 Gb. An AC-wifi might be nice, but when N is working right, it does all I need. I still need G for my windows phone. {sigh}

I have just tried Zyxel, Edimax and Netgear. Returned them all as the TP-Link when running right had much better power output on both G and N ate distances. Linksys, not even slightly interested in, so what's left? If a Buffalo, I'd want a non-DD-Wrt version. DD-Wrt is great but too time consuming to configure.

Anyone with personal experience of a router they love that doesn't cost a $100+, care to chime in here.

Answer:Decent Router at reasonable price? NOT TP-Link

I got a little-known Router from Western Digital [yeah, the hard drive company] over a year and a half ago, cost $60. When I first got it I'd have to turn the Wi-Fi off [switch on the front] about once a week to re-establish it. After about a month I got a firmware update for it and haven't had a problem since. It's been running 24/7 since 9/11 but we had a transformer blow down the road that day and were without power 6AM until about 7PM that day. Didn't help to also have 10" of snow.

I've set up D-Link and Netgear Routers and haven't had call-backs on them yet.

Right now with the current set of GPOs (like three dozen or so) and configuration it takes approximately 1-3 minutes for users to login. Our old computer system with terminal servers would take 2-3 minutes for users to login, or if about the same time -- there were other issues such as horribly under-specced and overloaded servers with 40 users per terminal server.

With a brand new set of GPOs (about a dozen or less) and OU structure that I carefully made and designed after spending several hours analyzing the existing GPOs and OU structure, it takes on average 16 seconds to login (best being 12 seconds, worst being 22 seconds). This uses VMware View Persona management storing profiles at \\srv-persona1\EXP_Profiles$\%username%. This is currently not being used by our North American environment.

If we use a persistent local profile through VMware View, login time is 2 seconds flat. Our Asian environment of at least 100 users uses this + the brand new set of GPOs and OU structure I created, but without VMware View Persona management (again -- persistent local profile).

At minimum, my supervisor is wanting to get the login time below 10 seconds -- aiming for 2 seconds, while using Persona management. He told me he would like to get rid of all of the GPOs (or as much as possible). I responded saying this is unrealistic and wrong, defeating the purpose of why GPOs as a feature exists and would also result in higher maintenance time and more frequent reprovi... Read more

Yes, I have a Window's Vista Toshiba laptop, Service Pack 2. We have fibre optic service through our local phone company and a router in the house.

Hi all,
I am on dial up connection now, i pay $20 a month for unlimited use to another internet provider on top of my normal Telstra bill and its been ok as far as $$ & speed for what i have been using it for, but my new computor will have a DVD & CD in it and i would like to be able to sometimes download movies and songs with it and the dialup i think will be far to slow for that type of use.
Its not only that, but when i use the internet on the same line as phone calls, i am missing a lot of calls and others in the house are getting pretty irrritated with me being always on the net.
I am a bit restricted as far as money goes because i am on a diability pension,
so i am looking for a reasonable priced provider that will suit my needs without going to overboard with the prices and will keep the phone clear for all other normal phone calls.
I have been looking at a few differant deals but i see that if you go over a certain amount of m'bytes they get stuck into you for excess, which looks like a bit of a trap to me.
I would even be happy with normal dialup speeds during the day [ when i can get on it] and downloading stuff at off peak times or during the nights.
Or am i asking for to much for to little?
Thanks in advance for any idea's.

Answer:Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Try Optus ADSL I think they have packages that include your phone and some free local calls. I'm not sure about ADSL but with cable when you exceed your limit they don't charge extra they just limit you to dialup speed.

I have a brand new W530 with the 500 GB HD -- 445 GB actual total space in C: ("Windows7_OS"), including about 85 GB of OS, pre-installed applications, and Lenovo bloat-ware). I plan to create a separate user-data partition by stealing space from the OS partition, call it E:, and to re-direct user Documents, Pictures, etc. directories plus the Outlook PST file there. Thus C: will be reserved mainly for Windows, Page File, Crash Dump, Restore Points, and new software installation. Any thoughts about a reasonable division of drive space between these two partitions? Coming from Windows XP 32bit on a much smaller HD, I have little idea what to expect in terms comfortable space requriements for Windows 7 64bit. (I realize I can re-size the partitions later, but it seems best to start with realistic allocations...) -- JCW2

Answer:What is a Reasonable Tradeoff Between System and Data Space in Windows 7 64bit?

It is hard to comment without some idea how the machine will be used. Some applications are not very well behaved and install on the c: drive regardless of what you do. Some functions, like the briefcase functions in windows 7 are harder to get off c:, although it can be done. (I got it right the second time I tried) If you share files using briefcase, you end may up with most of your data on c:. I decided I wanted to boot from an SSD, but I needed more data, so I put in a 256GB mSATA drive and moved my boot partition there. I used my entire HD for data. That worked out well for me.

I received the new Thinkpad x61s yesterday, ordered 3 weeks ago. I had chosen the Intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN for it, but when I received it yesterday I found they actually installed a 4965AG. This is shown in all the places: the system information, the device manager, as well as the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I have created screen shots to show the information, though I don't see anyway to attach the files here. I called Lenovo yesterday as soon as I found the problem. I thought the two obvious solutions would be to either send back the laptop for replacement of the wireless card by IBM/Lenovo, or to have them send me the correct card and I replace it by myself. Since the model is still being offered on sale, they certainly have the 4965AGN card. I was transferred back and forth on the phone between various depts. The last rep yesterday said they couldn't replace the card for me (why? "because it's just not how we do it." Instead they do put the wrong card?), nor can they send me a replacement card (said it would void warranty if I install it myself, which contradicts another rep. Could someone please confirm either way?). He said I had to either return the laptop for refund or get credit for the difference between the two cards. Neither of these is what I would like to accept. And I find it neither reasonable nor necessary. I called them today again. Answer:Lenovo messed up my wireless card on my new laptop and refuses a reasonable solution?!

I understand your frustration, but there is a thing I don't get it. By the fact that Intel doesn't have pcie network adapter card model 4965AG. They have only 4965AGN, which is the one you are supposed to get, and 3945BG/ABG for 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g consecutively. I suspect 4965AG is typo or something? but this way it's pretty hard for Lenovo to believe you as well. The question is how you can identify your network card then? If device manager really says that, you may like to update driver.I recommend you get into this card properties in device manager and check for Hardware Ids, for 4965AGN it should be VEN_8086&DEV4230&SUBSYS_11108086. If it's really a wrong one, I don't see that you couldn't get a replacement. The worst case is you may have to ship your unit back to repair center, I guess. note: I'm not related to Lenovo in anyway! I was pissed about their service too/ Edited: I was totally wrong. There is 4965AG. It's basically the same one with 802.11n disabled. However, it's not the same part number. 42T0865, 42T0867, 42T0869, 42T0871, 42T0905 : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n enabled)42T0873, 42T0875, 42T0877, 42T0879, : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n disabled) First, you have to check this part number on the box to see if it matches 11n disabled. Then check with your order and it's time to call them again. Message Edited by sipp11 on 01-21-2009 01:56 PM

2 weeks ago my Yoga 900 stops charging and the power cord starts making a popping sound from the wall socket (thank god it didn't start a fire). So it's obvious the power cord is bad. I call support and the agent says it's not the power cord and he can fix it (yes I did try to explain about the popping noise and small arcs of electricity it is making from the wall socket) so he remotes in and tries making some changes and even goes so far as to say the wall socket is the issue and not my power cord. Finally after an hour of testing he is finally convinced that it's the power cord. He puts in the order for a new cord to be sent out and tells me 3 business days (I'm finding out by reading through the forums that he lied directly to me as there are complaints about the cord being on back order about a month before I called) and of course after 3 business days nothing. I then try looking up online to see if I can track the order and I find out that the ticket number they emailed to me doesn't exist. After 3 or 4 calls and 1.5 weeks I finally get an agent who states that everything is put in correctly, they have the cord and she can't find out why it just hasn't been shipped and has escalated to management.

The most common error is 0x0000008E, but I've also had 0x00000019, 0x00000024, 0x1000000A, 0x0000004E (PFN_LIST_CORRUPT), 0x0000007F, 0x0000000A (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL), and 0x00000050 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). Usually it crashes at startup, but it has taken as much as twenty minutes. I've tried defragging the hard drive, using a registry cleaner, and replacing Sygate firewall (see below) but nothing appears to have worked.

Then Sygate starting occasionally crashing while I was online. I replaced it with PC Tools free firewall, which hasn't had any problems. (Yet...)

Somewhere in the last several months (hard to say whether it was before or after Sygate and the BSODs, it seems to have been creeping up for a while) Firefox developed an increasing tendency to hang. It reached the point where it was basically non-functional for a good quarter hour after connecting. During that time doing anything - maximising or minimising windows, accessing the start menu - took forever. Then Firefox started crashing - constantly. I worked my way through the official trou... I hope I posted in the right place. If not, I'll follow the " move " .
I've been reading here about the ad-aware, spybot, Highjack. What are they for, what do they do and why might I need them? I understand about being redirected to other sights I don't want to be. A bit ago I could not get to Symantic, only to a different sight. I cleared my cookies now I can. I just want to do right by my computer . Oh, and I have recommended this site to everyone I can think of.

Answer:Explanation please?

Ad-aware removes spyware, malware, and adware.
Spybot removes the same, but more.
Hijackthis shows whats currently running on your compy and whats running when your computer starts up, usually people ask you to post a log, that Hijackthis makes.. more idont know...

Question: Explanation Please

Yesterday when checking my email ( powered by Yahoo) I came across "Mailer-Daemon Failure". It seems that an email had been sent out to all of my contacts. I did not initiate this. Below is the content of this email.
Please view the document i uploaded for you using Google docs.
Follow Here to sign in with your email to view the document, its very important.
Thank you.
Has anyone else had a similar instance? Being a member here at BC I am well aware of how Malware can be introduced to infect an OS. I do not visit questionable sites and do have WOT installed as well as Spywareblaster. MSE is my stand-a-lone and use MBAM and SAS as on-demand scanners which I do regularly.
Since I became aware of this I changed my email password and ran "full scans" with both MBAM and SAS. The results were negative.
I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how this happened. Security updates are set to automatic. I have Secunia installed to ensure that programs are the latest versions.
I have not installed or downloaded any new programs nor any significant changes to my Win7x64Pro
Thoughts?? ( I should add that I got the Mailer-Daemon Failure due to one contact having an incorrect address ) otherwise I might not have ever discovered this.

Answer:Explanation Please

Your account could be hacked offsite, meaning that they wouldn't need to access your computer if you are using AT&T's email service.
That's why I don't use ISP based email (AOL, Verizon, Cable One, AT&T, etc). To date I have worked with at least 2 clients who had emails hacked, one by a Nigerian scammer who sent out mass emails impersonating the client and claiming they were stranded in the Caribbean and needed money wired...
If you have any important emails saved, I would recommend either forwarding them to another address or printing off a hard copy. Hacked accounts are usually wiped out or archived messages forwarded onto other addresses.
Do you use Outlook?

I usually don't have too many problems with my OS and I'm usually pretty conservative with what I put on my system as well. I'm getting ready to put a strong system together and if you wouldn't mind clearing a few things up for me.

I'd like to install 8GB of ram in the new system, however, I know I would need a 64 Bit OS to do it. My question is:

--If I install XP 64Bit, does this mean you must run 64Bit Apps on it? Will the standard applications I now use on XP Home 32 Bit work on the 64Bit version of XP?

Answer:XP 32 or 64 Bit Explanation?

Your system would still run 32 bit apps, they would not use the 64 bit function.
Any software that was written to use the 64 bit would use the 64 bit.
As to what software is 64 bit I haven't a clue.
I understand the fundamentals of the two types of OS.
Doe's this make sense?

Hey all - i am interested in getting another video card so that i can run dual video cards in SLI mode.

My question is that you NEED to have the exact same model/brand etc of card to run the SLI correctly? Im assuming this is the case - is there anything you guys could tell me that i would need to know...
(IE - could i get a Nvidida 8800 or a XFX 8800 ??? Or does it NEED to be the exact same model ...?)

I am currently running a BFG 8800 GTS OC 320mb - and i would like tp pick up another if you all think it would be worth it - i was thinking it would be as i might start to get limited with only 320mb of RAM when running the brand new games in DX10 etc - is this the case or should my current single card be enough?

Another quick question - i have a 19" LCD screen. It is the following model:
Optiquest Q91b

When i run games, i get blurring on the screen as if my FPS is low (yet i know i never go below 30fps... altho im usually in the high 60's and way above...). So im assuming the screen is causing this 'ghosting' effect? Is this true - if so, is there something i can do to limit this?

Are there any screens you could recommend for people on a budget looking to get a decent new screen that will not have ghosting at all etc - its frustrating playing games that look SO good - then have flickering and ghosting when shooting/playing games.

Any ideas/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Answer:SLI set up help and explanation

Both cards need the same chipset, so cards from XFX and EVGA would work. You want to try and stick with the same brand though, to avoid any issues.

It would help your performance yes. I don't know by how much. If you have the cash I would give it a try. Try to make sure you have the option to return it though, in case your not satisfied.

Not that familiar with monitors but I sorted it from top rating in the 100$-200$ range. 4017&bop=And&Order=RATING

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out something, hopefully you can give me some realistic explanation. I found a file on our computer, a google talk plugin log file (gtalkplugin-cxxxxx.rar) and I am trying to figure out how it got there...
It is a voice conversation log, as far as I can read it, it says our computer made a call from google talk to a cell number of a friend of my husband's who he has not talked to in months. The account that was "talking" to this cell number is unknown for me. (gmail account) I was trying to find a keylogger / spyware on the laptop but nothing got detected (tried Microsoft security task manager, and Microsoft security essentials and I have AVG full edition). So is it possible that somebody else created this log file and put it there? Or did somebody remotly lunch the program and used my computer? Is this possible? I have the log file in notepad, and it says the call was made from my IP, through my ethernet card... How did this file get created?

Thanks if anybody has an idea

Answer:explanation? how is this possible?

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

The A gives all the A's for a type
The B and C do the same for B's and C's
Is there a way to get A-Z all at once without doing it 26 times?
I tried * but that did not get recognized
Also can this info be explained?
Thanks in Advance

Answer:Explanation of URL

Looks like PHP to me. I don't know if there's a way to use a wildcard (*). I believe that has to be put into the code in order to be recognized.

Logishrd\CCDRV3\LDConfig is associated with Logitech SetPoint software. SetPoint lets you customize your mouse buttons, keyboard F-keys and hot-keys, control tracking speed, and configure other device-specific settings. It can also notify you of your device's battery status, and whether Caps Lock and Num Lock are on. you have any Logitech devices which use the SetPoint? Have you had it installed at one time then uninstalled SetPoint? The error indicates that SetPoint was set to run at startup. If uninstalled there is nothing to run, thus the error. If you uninstalled it's a leftover entry and the Logishrd folder can be safely deleted from C:\programfiles\commonfiles(I have SetPoint installed and have the same folder/entry listed)

Question: PCI-E explanation

Hey guys
I am a bit confused about the specifications of PCI-E x? slots, and was hoping you could help me.

I am looking to exchange my mainboard and need 2 PCI-e 2.0 x8 slots to run my sas controllers on,and was looking at this mainboard ASRock > Z77 Pro4-M

Now,my retailer has this board specified as having:
1 x PCIe 3.0 x16
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16
1 x PCIe 2.0 x1

Which clearly shows it has the 2 slots i need,HOWEVER on Asrock homepage under specifications for the mainboard they have it listed like this:

- 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (PCIE1: x16 mode)
- 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (PCIE3: x1 mode; PCIE4: x4 mode)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot

So,what exactly does that mean (PCIE3: x1 mode; PCIE4: x4 mode)???

Can this board use 2 sas pcie x8 cards at the designated speed?

I was looking at this Supermicro | Products | Motherboards | Xeon? Boards | X9SCL-F but it is 3 times as expensive,as i also have to exchange my ram then.

Answer:PCI-E explanation

It would mean that even though they are PCIE X16 physically, two of them are electrically operating in an X4 bandwidth.

As far as I can properly remember, the X16 lane (the one of the op) would be able to run an X8 card. Hell, I've even seen people put in PCIE-1X sound cards in an electrical X16 slot.

Why not purchase two X4 SAS Raid Cards instead of X8?

I have 2 machines that both run Win 7 Home prem. 64bit. Both of the hard disk drives are letter C and both of the dvd/cd drives are letter D. When I boot from a new original Win 7 disk and use the repair computer option(bottom one on the list of options) it starts looking for disks with info or whatever. When they stop and list the options, one machine's only option is Local disk C and the other machine's only option is Local disk D. I will post screen caps if needed. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Need an explanation.

Windows 7 may be set up in several ways - if during the paritioning portion of the install you create your own partitions windows will install all it's files to that partition. If you erase all the partitions and select the 'empty space' and press install windows will create a boot partition (that is hidden from the user) and a windows partition which is visible. When you boot from a windows disc / recovery environment it will make the windows partition show up as D: even though when you get into the operating system it shows as C:

Alright, I've heard several people talk about this "thermal paste" stuff. My CPU didn't come with any, and I don't know whether or not it was supposed to come with any. It was a retail CPU. My questions are:

1. What is thermal paste?
2. Should my CPU have come with any?
3. Do I really need it?
4. If 3 is a yes, where can I get it and which is best?
5. How do I use it?

thanks a whole bunch.

Answer:Ok, I need an explanation

1) A paste that allows better transfer of heat. Some pastes are better than others. It all depends what kinds of chemicals the paste is made from. Compound is like paste but made with conductive ceramic particles which is basically like putting electricity into water (transfers better).
2)Nope, stock heatsinks that come with CPUs use a thermal pad for heat transfer.
3)How hot is your chip running? The cooler the better mind you =)
4) - AS5 is probably the best thermal paste compound there is right now.
5)There are directions on that website... It's very simple, if you need help just post again when you've got the materials.

What's the difference between a switch and a hub? They both do the same basic thing, and I've used both many times for the exact same thing and noticed no difference in performance or anything else.... what makes an ethernet switch different from an ethernet hub?

(obviously, these are wired devices I'm discussing LOL )

Answer:Need an explanation....

Mmm, a hub is passive, it broadcasts across the network, whereas a switch actively passes the connection to the next node (that's my rough guide anyway ).

Nothing definitive but there are three known causes.

1-Please remove any CD visualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, called sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads DuplexSecure - FAQ

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.

2-Your Avast. I would remove and replace with Microsoft Security essentials
