Help me choose a laptop

Question: Help me choose a laptop

Not sure this is the right forum to post this in so pls have me excused if it is not.

I am looking for a PC. I have a macbook air which I really like but
1. Need a PC for my spouse
2. Need to use the PC for me to store and view bike videos, music and photos. I have the smallest version of the macbook air but the hard drive is getting filled up and the 1100 for 256 GB storage is a bit on the high side, assuming I can find a better alternative

The PC will be used primarily for:
1. Surfing the internet
2. Streaming from the internet (youtube, netflix etc)
3. Storage and viewing of videos (probably about 50 GB)
4. Storage of photos and music (not sure how much but probably that of a typical family)
5. Word, excel, ppt

The PC will be moved around the house but not used for travel except for now and then - so size and portability not a key criteria

Would like, if possible, to spend not more than 600 USD give or take

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Go for mac mini. It will meet your needs, also you already have macbook air, so it will be easy for you and your spouse. Cheers

k, here it is. im looking for a touch screen laptop but one that has a good integrated graphics or dedicated would be even better. and like it to be under 1500 bucks or less, have at least 2 hours of battery life more would also be better. im eyeing on 2 cheap ones the hp tx1000z for 949 bucks plus another 200 for upgrades and a case for around 1250 bucks.

or for about the same the gateway version. the gateway version has a better touchscreen i hear, so how much better is it? the actve vs passive? the drawback for the gateway is for the same price as the hp with upgrades it only has 1gb of ram, a gma950 vs nvidia6150 and lacks more features that are present with the hp.

Ive done some reading on reviews and its been pretty good for the hp but i have seen some that have written bad about it like strange noises and errors with doing certian tasks with it. plus according to the hp site it should be getting 3.5 hours with the 6 cell battery, yet people are reporting only 2 hours or even less.

the gateway doesn't have many reviews at all, all the people refer to touchscreens that cost around 1800 or better but thats a tad much for what it can do. which one of these is the best choice? thanks. my current laptop i have has a dedicated but weak atix600 graphics card, is the 6150 worse or better than that? thankyou!

Im a young female student and i have the option to buy one of the following LAPTOPS
1. The HP Compaq CQ56
2. The HP g6 Pavilion
3. Ipad 2 16/32 GB
It must be good for tasks, taking notes, music, pictures, internet and some games.
Please help me Choose the right one.

Answer:Help me choose a Laptop

The Compaq CQ56 models have been discontinued but you can get some good buys because of that.
The HP G6 Pavilion series is currently available from Amazon and you can read user reviews to help you pick a model in your price range.
the iPad2 is a great device, extremely portable but for taking notes it may not be the easiest unless you also carry around a bluetooth keyboard.

All the machines will be good for music, pictures, internet and some games. You should think more about size, weight, price and warranty rather than the specification for a machine with such simple tasks.

i'm not a complete idiot when it comes to computers but i am pretty indecisive and cautious.
Basically i'm in the market for a new laptop for uni but i can't make my mind up what to get.
My basic requirements are;
It needs to be reasonably portable with a decent battery life.
i'll be using it for general word processing but will also be running auto cad and ies virtual environment (both heavy cpu users)
i'll not really be using it for games but do occasionally play football manager so i wouldn't mind it being able to run that at a decent speed.
My budget is between £400-600 obviously the lower end of that scale would be better.
i like the look of these but as i say i'm indecisive.
any advice will be appreciated.

Answer:Help me choose a laptop.

Obviously, you need to check the minimum system requirements of the particular programs you are likely to be running (some Autocads are really "thirsty".
I tend to think you may find the Fujitsu may be a bit "lightweight", in terms of hard drive. Of the two Lenovos, the Thinkpad may be better quality, but the G570 gives more "bang for your buck". Having said that, there are numerous versions of the G570; the one you show is the basic version. Some of the higher spec versions may be a bit more expensive, but possibly better value for money. There is also a Z570 which may be a good compromise between spec, and quality.

Gateway NV5335u

Dell Inspiron 15(1545)

(You can get a compare list if you click on Everyday Laptops then select both laptops and click compare in the laptop list.)

I plan on using the laptop for college, while playing some games (Such as Counter Strike: Source, or other games with similar requirements; I go for performance, not quality)

I'm mainly worried about the processor and Graphic card. The Pentium is faster than the AMD, but the Radeon is defiently faster than the 4500mhd, but not sure by how much.

If you have any other laptops you would like to suggest for under $500 (subject to change), please do tell.

Thanks in advance.

Let you know the Gateway is a (Acer) that FSB (front side bus) is only 533MHz while the DELL is 800MHz on the FSB. So performance from the sub-system on the DELL would be faster than the Acer.

DELL allows you to upgrade the RAM to 8GB instead of the Acer is limited to 4GB. You might as well buy the DELL. If you can try both systems out in the store before you buy online. I would do that.

One more thing, might interest you or not. as cash back program that gives you money back if you buy the unit online then go and pick-up in the store. If you just gone to the store you wouldn't get ... Read more

Sadly, it's hard to find someone who mkaes a good laptop... If anything on your list, I would say Gateway. They have better support than the other compainies from what I know. It's a bit more money, but you may find it worth it in the end. Stay away from Acer and HP. I don't trust either of those companies.Flame

Hi, I want to buy a laptop for gaming and uni work soon with money i'm getting for my birthday. My friend just bought an Acer Aspire 3023WLMi (3020):
which is pretty nice for £650, but i don't need all the multimedia stuff like a card reader, (built in WIFI would be nice though). My budget is around about the same price so should I go for the same laptop or are there better offers on the market? This is my first laptop and I know nothing about whats good and whats not...

Hi guys,

Im stuck between two similar windows 7 laptops, some second opinions on which to choose would be great.

the first is a HP G61-110sa with a t4300, 4gb ram and a 4500mhd graphix card.

the second one im looking at is a zoostorm with a dual core 2 t6600, 3gb ram and 4500m (not hd) graphix

iv not seen anything about zoostorm, and cant really see anywhere else that sells them

I know the dual core 2 in the zoostorm is beter than the hp's t4300, the only thing that worrys me is the 1gb less of ram and the worse graphics (but how much worse is the lack of hd capability in the 4500m?)

i want to be able to watch dvds on the computer and maybe play some games - i realise neither will be brilliant on the games front tho

any help or other options around the ?400 price mark is much appreciated

ps, apologies if this is in the wrong sectoion

Hello everybody! This is my first post here and I'm looking for some advice. I'm a student looking for a laptop. I need it to be cheap, i.e. $800 or less, but also have a good feature set. Reasonably fast, with some memory (may upgrade later) is a must. I also need (or really really want) a good video card as I'm planning on running games on it (newer games, but I don't care if I have to lower the settings ridiculously to get it to run at a reasonable speed).

I'm currently looking at two laptops for sale at CompUSA. Could someone tell me which of these they would recommend? (Unfortunately I can't post links to CompUSA's site for specs, but I have provided the product codes so you can try and find them yourself! I would appreciate the effort!)

Acer Aspire AS3502WLCi - CompUSA Product Code: 319907
Toshiba Satellite A85-S107 - CompUSA Product Code: 328883

I'm leaning heavily towards the Toshiba because of the ATI Radeon graphics card it has. But looking more closely, the Acer is an all-around better system and for $100 cheaper! It's really the graphics card that's making me think twice. Is there any way to upgrade the graphics card in the Acer? Or should I just go with the Toshiba and upgrade the memory and deal with the other features it may or may not have?

Or does someone else have an idea as to another laptop I may be able to get with a similar price range and feature set?

I really appreciate all the help, guys! Thanks m... Read more

Right now I'm fighting between the HP 5000 series and the Saony Vaio FJ series.

I'd plan on using it mostly for regualr word processing, internet browsing, pictures, music, and burning discs. But there will certainly be times I'd be running quark, photoshop and dreamweaver applications simultaneously.

I have absoulutely no interest in using it for gaming, watching DVDs etc and don't plan on carrying it around too often.

Price range $1500

Anyone have any feedback or user experiences on either? Or want to confuse me more and suggest another machine?

Okay so the thing is that my desktop pc is weared out. I'm looking for a laptop now to get more flexibility.
I was thinking detachable/hybrids because I can use touchscreen more freely and it would feel right.
So far I found HP splits and yogabook.
I need a real good suggestion for a cheap and good performing hybrid laptop. I'd be interested in surface 3 too but the screen size is way too small isn't it? And also I have to buy a keyboard additionally (someone said its $200)
Can anyone suggest me any laptop? Oh yeah and foldables are welcome too. Just the keyboard shouldn't be an issue while using touchscreen.
I am looking for 13" + screen, decent hard disk and processor can work out according to price.
I am in India so availability would be a problem too but I would be able to get one from US or UK. So hit me up with your ideas please.
Thank you.

Hey , I am from New Delhi
I ended up buying a Lenovo flex 10 quad core processor notebook (I also opted for office 2013 home and student edition ). Specs are decent as you will get a bay trail processor , 2GB ram (one can expand it ) , 500GB hard drive , HD camera , and its a touchscreen lol (comes pre installed with windows 8 but you may update it to windows 8.1 without any issues )
There is another Lenovo flex 10 model which is a Celeron dual core processor with 2GB ram , 500GB hard drive and comes pre installed with office 2013 home and student edition. I didn't opted the dual core because it was slow in daily task. Both of them can be easily converted in a lap-stand ? , find out more here :- Flex 10 Dual-Mode Laptop | Affordable, Thin, & Light 10.1" Multitouch Notebook | Lenovo (IN)
I gifted my Acer iconia w4 to my sister. this tablet(if you attach a keyboard it will act like a laptop ) Intel atom processor. 2GB ram , 64GB ssd with expandable via SD card.HD display with a 5MP back camera , front I didn't remember but it was OK for Skype calls. Battery on this was excellent , I got uptown 10 hours on a single charge where as Lenovo flex gave me 3-4Hours battery life backup.
regarding prices I got this from efutre outlet in Nehru place , Lenovo flex 10 for 28,990 INR where as Acer iconia for 29,000 INR.

Question: help choose laptop

am ready to order new laptop and am sold on lenovo. however, cant decide between T400/T500 or R61. Starting small resell business; priorities internet, CD/DVD burn & copy; photos; LONG battery life (all day auctions); completely wireless (printer 4 in 1, etc); fast and rough and tough.  Any help out there?  I'll take any I can get! Thanks.

Answer:help choose laptop

Hey jude, [Cue Beatles music!]Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Welcome to the Lenovo forum.  All those machines are good. I'm a fan of the 25W TDP P-series Core 2 Duo CPUs (like P8600, etc.) available in the T400/T500 (and very similar R400/R500), but not the R61. The P-series CPUs are very energy-efficient so they run cooler, quieter, and longer on a given amount of battery. For your purposes (no gaming or CAD mentioned) the Intel GPU is fine; that will give longer battery life than the ATI GPU. You could choose the switchable GPU, but I personally don't like that because then the Intel GPU can't drive the digital DisplayPort or dock DVI video. More screen real estate is always handy. If your eyes can take 130 pixels/inch, then 1680x1050 on the T500 gets you the most usable space. I'd recommend T500 over R500; there are some significant differences. Personally I find text on the 130 ppi screen a bit too small, so prefer 1440x900 (about 120 ppi) on the R400 or T400. The R400 and T400 are very similar. The R400 will run slightly cooler and quieter because of its increased thickness. The T400 is thinner and lighter and still runs very cool and quiet. You can choose between them based on price and your personal preference. Unless you get a great deal on the R61, or have some specialized requirements that you haven't listed, I'd advise going with the newer series of machines. Hope that helps!-Frank

Refurbished PCs generally have more problems than new PCs. If the unit was returned due to an intermittent problem (freezing up, overheating, etc.) it may not have been repaired properly. In addition, most refurb units only have a 90 day warranty (versus one year for a new PC).

I'd pay a little extra and get a new one with at least a one year mfr. warranty.

Hello , I am going to buy a new laptop but I'm not sure which to get. They have similar specs but I think it comes down to reliability ? Or experiences. Here are the computers.

Answer:which laptop to choose?

You're right that on a specs level they're fairly much the same. The only difference is that the Toshiba has 2GB more RAM and it's not entirely certain what type of HD Intel graphics card is in the Toshiba.

It comes down to what you're going to do with it. If you're looking to do some gaming on the laptop then neither of these will be very strong gaming computers due to the lower-leveled graphics cards.

However, if you're merely looking for a light gaming laptop then either or would do the trick. I'm pretty comfortable with HP computers -- I've owned more than 3 of them. They're fairly good computers, but as I was doing my research for buying a new laptop I discovered that HP is actually one of the worst in hardware because it has the most malfunctions in the first 2 years.

Toshiba and Asus were the top two brands, but I should also note that the numbers weren't extremely different. In all honesty, I would go with the Toshiba because it's cheaper and it has more RAM memory. Though you should also go to a store that sells laptops and toy around with some Toshiba and HP computers to see whose layout/design you prefer.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio F50-10k since 2009 and even if its still in good condition (apart from a few burned pixels) it has a major problem from day 1: Overheating! And I'm talking about overheating to the point that shuts down on its own. Pretty bad because I lost a hard drive from that. I've sent it to service quite a few times but Toshiba refused to change the defective graphics card (that's the one that overheats) - processor doesn't even break a sweat, all work goes to the graphic card.
Here are the specs:
**Toshiba Qosmio F50-10k
Intel Core Duo 2.53GHz
4 Gb RAM
650Gb HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
Windows Vista 32bit**
Anyway, I'm looking for a decent upgrade (not necessarily top notch),
an I5 is good (no I3 because they are no different than a Core Duo)
but I need to know if there are specific brands and/or models that have less overheating issues.
I'm not looking for a laptop with no overheating issues because there is none. And I'm certainly not considering a desktop (I travel a lot so don't mention it),
I just need a laptop (below 1000$) that doesn't crack under pressure (no overheating to a shut down point).
So far I've found that MSI and Asus have better heat management but they are a bit on the expensive side.
Here are some models that I consider buying:
Asus R510JX-XX041H (i7-4720HQ/8GB/1TB/GeForce GTX 950M//W8)
Asus X751LKB-TY110H (i7-5500U/8GB/2TB/GeForce 850M/W8)
Asus ROG GL552VW-DM775, i5-6300HQ/15.6 FHD/4GB/1TB/nVidia GTX 960M 4GB/No OS

Help me please to choose laptop for work (photoshop, corel, work with video etc)
I think it will replace my computer and my old laptop!
I have not much preferences:
1. Screen not less than 17,3
2.Matte computer surface, I read it is much better
3. Video 2 GB I think this is enough
4. I would like my laptop work not to loudly and without overheating
I am looking forward to your recommendations

Answer:Please, help me to choose the best laptop!

What is your budget?

I would recommend an i7 processor for hyperthreading for those applications that can take advantage of it.

i5 will suffice but I think you'd definitely notice better performance on the i7.

I noticed a lot of the i7 machines are really pricy because they have additional "bells and whistles" that bump the overall cost up - if it were me I would buy a low priced i7 machine with a 1080p display and buy a 250g SSD (about 100$). Seems laptops with SSDs from the factory have really inflated prices - better to put it in yourself aftermarket.

Hi,Thanks for help in transferring data as regards my last post - it now poses another problem as to which size will my Fujitsu Amilo D7820 cope with - 60gb....80gb ?? Also, how do I choose speed or ATA?? IDE?? quietness? etc. I haven't a clue!Or where to buy? That's a lot to sort out!Can anyone help or even give me the name of a website? Thanks,June.

Answer:How do choose which laptop hdd to buy ??

Websitesclick hereclick hereYour laptop will cope with any main stream 2.5inch laptop specification drive. Basically all of them on the sites above.Speed is refered to in rpm (revs per minute) 5400 being the better 7200 is rare but the best. 4200 is quite slow but for average use is fine.ATA - this is just the speed at which transfers occur. Dont worry about it just make sure the drive is ATA compatable.IDE is the interface make sure it is an IDE drive or it wont connectQuietness - google "item name" and the word review is the best way to evaluate it. Dont post another thread here asking is this drive quiet there are quite literally 1000s of sites with info on each drive. If no mention is made of noise then it will be a quiet drive.

It looks like your looking in the <$500 range.
I personally have Toshiba laptops since the 286 days and have never had a bad one.

But, then I normally buy the high end machines.

Guessing that your friend who wants to buy a laptop for just portable operations like email web and
such. I would buy the one with the most memory and hard disk space.
If they really wanted to watch DVD movies then the larger screen would be nicer.

There are so many variables that would help anyone if we knew what they were going
to do with the laptop.

I am looking to upgrade my laptop. I don't use it for gaming, but I have to do basic video editing for university. I use Sony Movie Studio 12 Platinum Suite.

I have narrowed it down to two laptops:

(Custom built) Lenovo Z500
Processor: Intel Core i5 3230M 2.60GHz
RAM: 4GB (possibly able to upgrade this to 6 or 8 GB)
Hard Drive: 1TB
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GT 635

(Refurbished) ACER Aspire E1-572
Processor: Intel Core i7-4500U 1.8 GHz
Hard Drive: 750GB
Graphics Card: Not sure (but it is Integrated and not Dedicated)
Amazon link for this laptop can be found here
Price: £419.99
I'm leaning towards the ACER based on price. Having looked at benchmark tests it seems that both are very similar, with the i5 even outperforming the i7 on some tests.
The other issue is dedicated graphics card vs integrated one. I don't believe it to be too important if I'm not gaming but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not very savvy at all with hardware so any help will be appreciated! Please note that the video editing will not be very intensive, however the clips may be quite long for my university projects.

Thanks for reading! A little bit of clarity would be nice

If anyone has any alternatives then my absolute maximum budget is £500.

Im currently looking for a laptop and could use some help because I have never had one before and I dont know what to look for. I have no idea how to build laptops so I guess I will get one prebuilt.

I will manly be using it for school and work related activities. Im also planning to use it for testing my wireless network for security holes and stuff like that. I dont plan on using it for games or intense programs but I dont want a slow one either. I will probably listen to music on it thought.

I was looking at this series of laptop from dell. Should I consider one of these or something else like an HP from like bestbuy or something.

Any opinions would be helpful.

Answer:Could somone help me choose a laptop.

I guess I will have to try and figure this one out on my own.

I need a laptop for mostly research and entertainment purposes. I use a lot of applications at once, like Chrome, Office, Texmaker, skype, photos etc...My browsing is quite intense as I have multiple browser windows with dozens of tabs open including youtube windows. I dont use my laptop for gaming AT ALL and I also dont do any professional photography or video editing. I just like to watch movies, listen to music, do some heavy surfing and also have a lot of storage for work files, photos, movies, music etc..
I am looking to spend between 900-1000USD. That is converted from Euros as I reside in Europe and I have left some room to pay extra for accidental damage protection as I spilled coffee on my macbook pro :/
Here are my needs but I am not able to find a decent laptop for my budget online:
OS: Windows 10 64bit (Strict preference, I hated my mac because of its OS and had put windows on it)
RAM: 6-8 GB
Hard-disk: 256GB+ SSD (I have heard SSD is much more efficient, is it true?)
Processor: Intel core i5/i7 (6th or 7th gen) 2.2Ghz+
Graphics: Intel / Nvidia (No Preference)
Display: 1920x1080 HD
Size: 13-15 inch
Touch: No Preference
Battery: 3-4 cell
Audio: It would be nice if it had surround sound like Dolby Home Theater or something similar as I would use it for listening music a lot.
Please dont suggest Apple Macbook as I dont want to spend extra on buying windows since I didnt have a licensed copy initially. Any other brands are fine: Asus, Dell, Acer, HP, Samsung, To... Read more

Hey all,

I'm trying to decide between two laptops. One has the Core Duo T2400 (1.86 GHz) and the GeForce Go 7900GTX (which I've heard GREAT things about), and the other has the Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz) and the GeForce Go 7600 (256MB memory). I know that the Core 2s are better by a fair amount, but what do you guys think as far as gaming goes? They are right around the same price (although the Core 2 is a tad bit cheaper with a little bigger hard drive). They both have the same amount of memory, although the Core 2 also has a higher res (1440x900 vs 1680x1050). I play a fair amount of high end games like CS:S and BF2, so I want good performance. Unfortunately they won't let me add the 7900GTX to the Core 2 machine.

What would you guys do?

Hello everyone. I'm looking for some opinions on which laptop configuration I should use. I'm going to purchase an entry level Sager gaming laptop. It comes down to the Sager NP5855 or the Sager NP6852. Should I opt for the 6852 with a 1080p IPS display, fingerprint sensor, multicolor keyboard, gtx 1050ti, 8gb ram, 1tb hard drive 7200rpm. Or the 5855 with 1080p non IPS display, no fingerprint sensor, white illuminated keyboard, gtx 1050 not ti, 16gb ram, and Samsung Evo 250 SD. They would be the exact same price which is what I can afford. My main thing is the IPS display and 1050ti with the 6852 or the 16gb of ram and ssd with the 5855. Sorry for the long post, appreciate any comments.please help.Thanks.I didn't find the right solution from the internet.References:

Answer:Which laptop configuration should I choose?

Some notes:  This is a Dell forum, so you'll likely get more advice in a more generalist forum.
The NP5855 is a Clevo N855HJ model;  the 6852 is the N850 HK1.  These notebooks are sold by many vendors -- mostly "boutique" brands -- Sager is the largest one, but it's not particularly highly regarded for support.  Look around -- there are resellers with MUCH better support ratings than Sager that sell the same systems - often at the same or even lower prices.
Both systems are fundamentally similar - they both use soldered-in CPUs and GPUs, so they're not upgradeable (but just about nothing in this price class/size range is any longer).  The IPS display IS worth the added cost (I have a Clevo P775DM-G that's one of the best screens I've ever seen, and it's a  Samsung IPS).

Hi Folks,
I'm hoping for a system that's speedy and energy efficient. My needs are basic relative to gamers/editors; I'll only want it for MS Office, mutiple movie tabs and being able to run 2 different browsers (eg firefox and chrome) at the same time with imacros (repetitive script plugin).
It doesn't matter to me if it's mobile or upgradable because I won't be doing that and I'd want it to last several years. My last one lasted 8-10 years and it was at best a mid range laptop (it would have still been going if I'd bothered to clear the dust from the fan).
The reason I'd like it to be energy efficient is because I'll use it everyday for upto 10 hours and as I'm not an intensive performance user, I don't think I should need 100's of watts.
Desktops are cheaper to buy for the same performance, but seem less energy friendly. Although, I'm not sure on the energy efficiency, because I've been told speedy systems can use less power overall as they'll complete a task quicker then run at idle consumption, so I really have no idea what I should be going for.
Even if more powerful CPU's may return to idle sooner, in a desktop there will still be other components using more energy than a laptop. I don't mind if one system uses slighly more power than another, if it more than compensates in performance that's relevant to me.
Laptops may cost more to buy but I wonder if they are better value performance wise looking at power consumption and considering the performance I need is not that... Read more

I do realise cutting down on power costs performance, but I'm hoping that with my needs I can get away with having both efficiency and performance, or at least close to it.

I am looking to buy a new laptop that would would work without freezing. My usage mainly includes: working with lots of excel & word files simultaneously (10-15 at a time) and I normally have 10+ chrome tabs open at any given time. I am also a huge fan of chrome apps and have quite of these installed (most of them for my work). I am however, not at all into games and that's not a priority for me at all.

My current laptop which I have had for 2 yrs now turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, as it constantly freezes with the above workload. It is an Acer Aspire S3 with Intel® Core™ i5-2467M Processor with 4GB RAM (066/1333). Before this I had a Compaq Presario CQ71 with Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz, which was the best machine I have bought till date. It never-ever froze and could easily handle my workload. It amazes, me how despite being so much older and lower specs, it trumps the acer.

I wonder if this could be because, the Acer is an ultrabook, while the compaq was a bulky laptop? This is a key question, as I want to stick to ultrabooks due to their light weight, but I wonder, if that compromises speeds, or in the last 2 years since my last purchase, the technology with ultrabooks has improved significantly?

I would appreciate suggestions on what aspects of the specs I should focus most on and any good suggestions that meet the following criteria:
* 8 GB Ram (Preferably 16GB)
* Processor: Would I benefit from i7 or would i5 suffice? I bel... Read more

i have a fuji i5 with 6gb and have usually about 20 chrome tabs open and 10 excel spreadsheets (although small and not often using array or volatile formulas) , email, sometimes the odd video is played and it copes well

the i5 process comes in various flavours and some are slower in performance than an i3

i use this comparison to compare cpu

your cpus
Intel Core i5-2467M @ 1.60GHz 2347 646
Pentium Dual-Core T4200 @ 2.00GHz 1146 1092

The first number the higher is better, 2nd number lower is better
so the i5 you had was better than previous machine

Also the CPU is often slowed down to save power on battery use - so you may want to review your power option settings

what operating system are you using (old compaq v new acer) ?

i dont know the china market, perhaps you could post a few models you are considering

you will pretty much be limited to windows 8 machines, some companies business machines are still provided with windows 7 - Dell for example

my i5 is a
Intel Core i5-2450M @ 2.50GHz 3448 428

as you can see that has a much higher spec than your i5
so the cpu comparison can be useful

you could also use task manager
control+alt+delete keys
look at performance and see if you are using the max memory or the cpus running at 100% - see where the bottle neck maybe

Hey guys,

Im such a noobie at choosing laptops (generally tech) and understanding their specs Im currently looking at:

Acer Aspire 5560G Laptop - Laptops |

Fujitsu Lifebook AH531 Laptop - Laptops |

Can someone tell me which one I should get ? Cus from my naive perspective, I think their specs look quite similar ? I just wonna know which one would be more suitable if Im looking for a laptop around that price and is compatible for someone who wants to do some light gaming on it maybe...? Also I have no idea which of their processors or graphics card is better However I do understand that their HDD is a bit old .....but I think i can live with that since its budgeted i do understand that I cant have the best of both worlds

Please give me a suggestion ! Or a provide me with a decision if it is u that is to choose

Thank you !

Answer:(Budget laptop) Which one to buy ?! Please help me choose

I'd go with the Acer any day. It has a better gfx card than the Intel HD graphics. While the processor is a little lower, it should still give you the performance you want. Games use GFX more than CPU. And integrated video isn't that great to came on, anyhow.

What do you mean by their HDD? You can't simply transfer over Windows from one computer to another.

I am British but live in Spain, and am about to buy a laptop for the first time.

Do I have to buy from the U.K. to get an English version of Windows (preferably XP) and bundled software?

So do any makers of laptops let you choose the language?

If I could buy in Spain, it would work out much cheaper, obviously. I'm not bothered about a Spanish keyboard, but would like everything else in English - Windows, Outlook Express, Word, Utilities etc. (No interest in gaming.)

Many thanks for anyone's help please.

Answer:new laptop - can I choose language?

i think some OEM versions do not have full multilanguage support
do they still sell XP in Spain ?? most are vista now in UK

I've narrowed it down to basically two choices, though feel free to add your own favorites. The first one meets and exceeds my current computer needs. The reason I am looking at the second one is because it is a very nice system and it will keep me having a powerful system for years to come. My current uses are:

Virtual PC 2004, though I don't use it a whole ton
Half Life 2
Word Processing/Internet Browsing
Veiwing Movies(No editting or anyting like that)
Programming-just stuff for my programming class

Some Hardware Needs:
I perfer a lighter, smaller machine
Battery Life is important, at least 2 hours off battery

Machine A-TigerDirect
1 gb DDR2 Ram
80 GB Hard Drive
DVD-RW Drive
AMD Turion 64 MK-36 2.0 Ghz Processor
Refurbished(Doesn't matter to me)
15.4 inch screen
MS Media Center (I'm upgrading to XP Pro though-Already have copy)
Acer Aspire 5100-3583
Weights 6.2 Pounds
Cost:$600 w/Shipping

Machine B-Circuit City
2 gb DDR2 Ram
120 Gb Hard Drive
DVD-RW Drive
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 ghz processor 667 mhz 2 mb Cache
Acer Aspire 5580-6432
Weights only 5.2 lbs
Cost:$950 w/shipping-If you find it cheaper tell me

Those are them, please help me in deciding which one is better for me.

Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit (6.3, Build 9600) (9600.winblue_r9.150322-1500)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC
BIOS: F.23
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4000M CPU @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600

I am wondering if I should try upgrading or buying a completely new laptop. I plan on running mostly Photoshop with some minor video editing in After Effects. If I should upgrade, what would be best to upgrade to achieve a laptop that can smoothly run those programs. If I should buy a new laptop, I would like to keep it smaller and similar size to the 13" Macbook Pro. Overall, I would like to keep all costs under $800.
Thank You,

Answer:What should I choose for an editing laptop?

Are you having issues running these programs on your current system? Upgrading a laptop is not the same as upgrading a PC. One is often limited to upgrading just memory and hard drives.

Hi guys. I'm planning to buy Dell Precision 7710 laptop and now choosing the processor.I'm working with After effects and 3ds Max so planning to choose the Graphic card Nvidia Quadro m5000m (8Gb), and 64gb RAM ECC.  There are several types of processor so I'm wondering which is better for my use. Here is the choice:- Intel® Xeon® E3-1505M v5 (Quad Core 2.80GHz, 3.70GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W, w/Intel HD Graphics P530)
- Intel® Xeon® E3-1535M v5 (Quad Core 2.90GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W, w/Intel HD Graphics P530) [add $76.56]
- Intel® Xeon® E3-1545M v5 (Quad Core Xeon 2.90GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W, w/Iris Pro Graphics P580)
I see that there is slight difference in GHz and integrated video. But the price difference in some instances is more than $500. So my main task now is to clarify is it worth of saving this money. So I would like to ask you guys 1) how big is the difference between 2.8GHz and 2.9GHz in performance? 2) Since I will use Nvidia Quadro m5000m does the type of integrated video card (HD P530 or Iris Pro) is still important for my use? Thank you in advance for any help or advice.Alex

Answer:7710 laptop. What process to choose

1.  Very little overall.
2.  It will only be an issue for applications where you choose to use the Intel GPU (for instance, to extend battery runtimes - using the nVidia GPU will drastically cut the runtime).
Intel's traditional pricing scheme places a high premium on the fastest CPU -- it's rarely the best price/performance choice.
That said, bear in mind that the CPU in these is not upgradeable -- it's soldered to the system board, so whatever you do buy, you can't upgrade later (short of replacing the entire mainboard, which will be a VERY expensive proposition).

Answer:How to choose monitor webcam over laptop's

Hi, I think you'll not be able to stream your laptops camera on TV. However ther is a program which trasfers data from laptop to TV. So you can share the screen of your laptop/thinkpad to your tv (if your tv supports it.)  I think the program name is "WIFI display helper" - it shares the screen to TV. Hey guys. I am trying to upgrade to a newer laptop from my current HP Pavilion dv6-3230us. Here are my current stats:
Intel Core i3 Processor 2.4GHz
500GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
15.6-Inch Screen, Intel HD Graphics
Windows 7 Ultimate, 5.25 hours Battery Life
It's good for general use, watching movies, video editing, etc. But it stinks at gaming/3D modeling. I'm not a heavy gamer (no Wow, lol, crysis, call of duty) just stuff like Gears of War and Resident Evil 5 every once in a while. Vindictus is fun too. The intel hd graphics can play both Gears and RE5 games at 30 frames per second, but only on the LOWEST details. Errr...I am also using Game Booster v3.5 while playing. Also please note that while my laptop is 1366 by 768 pixels, I hook it up to a 1080 monitor when I'm at home so that may influence gaming a bit.

I am looking at the Asus line and the Toshiba Satellites. But feel free to make other suggestions! Links are provided by clicking on the laptops' names.

One thing though, is that this had the only CPU on this list that is quad-core. Will that help with gaming and make up for the Radeon HD 6520G (pretty low in class 3on the graphics card comparison link)? Also, Turbo Core Technology sounds pretty cool, what is it exactly?

The i7-2670QM is quad core, with hyperthreading. (Shows up as 8 CPUs in Windows.)

Intel? Core

This probably doesn't help with your choice, though.

Hi,There is no way for free downgrade from windows 10 to windows 8/8.1. Your only solution is to buy a windows 8/8.1 license and install it on the computer. But in this case you will wipe all your data from the partition on which your system is installed. Or you can install it on a different partition and have a dual boot.

Last month I pestered you nice folks about the problem I had hooking up my ergonomic ps/2 keyboard to my Dell Inspiron 8600 via a cable to convert it to my laptop's USB port.

Upshot was, y'all said get a new keyboard since the old one caused static to build up. Two questions (for starters, heh heh):

1) Is it true that if you use non-Dell peripherals such as a keyboard that Dell will fry up or misbehave like an unrepentant schoolchild?

2) How can I tell if the USB is the right one? Some say "Mac" but does that mean they have special Mac keys, or it flat won't work with a PC? I hope that's not too ignorant a question. If a keyboard says USB + PS/2 am I gonna have the same problem I have now, or does that imply you could hook it either with a USB cable or a PS/2 cable?

Thanks to any who can help this dreadfully uninformed granny. I thought if I could find a really sweet one that's not too too too expensive, the family might chip in and "surprise" me for my birthday.

Answer:USB keyboard for Dell Laptop (how to choose)

1) No it's not true, although dells themselves are known to act up without any reason, it will not be checking ot make sure the HW you plug into it is from dell.

2) A USB keyboard is a USB keyboard. Anyone you find should work just fine. All there saying it they've provided drivers for it. But even that doesn't matter, since any OS you have has it's own standard keyboard drivers. You only need custom keyboard drivers if the keyboard has extra special keys, but even then you can use the built in windows one. It just means the special keys wont work.

I should note however, that the static build up thing you mentioned with the current keyboard sounds... lets just say fishy. I've never in my 20 years with computers heard of a keyboard causing a static buildup. I'm not even sure exactly what you mean by that, but it sounds to me like someone was feeding you a line of bull****.

Hp envy 15 wtih i7 4700MQ, Nvidia GT 740M, 8G RAM, 1T HDD, 5400rpm. window8.1. $999
Does HP battery get hot so easily? I heard from my friends experiences.
Does HP have bigger noises?
Is Asus better for gaming?
I found this AUSU is more expensive comparing to other same level laptop, why?
Both prices are fine to me, I just want to know which one is better, more useful for working, gaming, watching video, and more conveniently portable.

Answer:Help and advise me to choose a laptop (2 Different Brands)

My personal choice would be the HP, it has more RAM, better graphics, a bigger hard drive and the processor uses slightly less power. Against this you have to balance that Asus always comes out better on build quality than HP. Any chance that you can go to a store for a physical comparison? Target? Walmart?

As a rule of thumb, do you agree that one should always choose the best processor for the money one wants to spend? In other words, is it priority--all other things being equal--to get the highest-benchmark-processor one can afford?

I have an ASUS X-54C laptop with 2 GB RAM, running Windows 7 Home Premium that came installed. This is a spare machine I use only for surfing, when my Desktop PC is being used by other family members. I recently added another 4 GB RAM and also intend replacing the installed HDD with an SSD to make it more responsive.
The laptop is up to date with Windows updates and is regularly scanned with Nod32 Antivirus, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes AntiMalware software.
My problem now is, after I am done using the laptop, I choose to shut it down.
Windows says, "....logging off,......shutting down.... and then restarts!
Before installing the SSD, I thought it a good idea to defrag the hard drive and then clone it to the new SSD. I downloaded a trial version of Vopt9, a defragging utility, which I have used in the past with no issues. This time, I think, using this was the cause of my 'restart' problem, but am not sure if it really is. The defragger also seems to have removed all my restore points, so there is no going back to one of these points.
I thought may be the laptop fan wasn't working. But Real Temp software shows my laptop to be running at a cool 50-52 degrees. I am doing a hard power off to shut down.
I also ran Hijackthis and analyzed the log into an Analyzer that is available on website. It did not raise any threats. I can post the log here if it will help.
No idea what to do next, so any help in resolving this problem... Read more

We'll today while I was playing a match of Gun Game on Black Ops 2 Xbox360. My mother called me through the phone and tolled me I needed to contact my biological father and tell him that I need to get a laptop for a trip I'm making to Puerto Rico. She suggested me an apple, but in my mind "Nope." Stating the fact im a PC gamer so why not get a Gaming Laptop? The Apple laptops are such a rip-off. You would accually build your own Computer and it would come out cheaper, same price, or a couple bucks over an iMac and it would be way more better. So I was thinking what should I get an Mac Laptop, or a Gaming Laptop? I'm almost going to be doing some video editing on their. We'll alteast im going to try I already have a decent medieum end gaming computer. Accually scratch the video editing. Main reason is because I need to be doing my online school in puertorico... And I don't really need a mac for that sinse everything takes place online. So why not just get a gaming laptop sinse I am getting a chance to get a laptop now. So yeah... Also, if you could I am just a newbie at reading computer so I don't know none of that 6.51GHz Dual Core intel power core stuff. So if you could, please state the specs of the computer and what each section means and does...

Hey there Fellow TechSpotters

After reading this site: and this one: and also: ...coupled with the frustrating behaviour of my "win machines" I've decided that there has to be a better way.

I've watched "Revolution OS" and Linux seems to be closer to the ethos that I feel computing should embody than the software I'm running at the moment. I'm feeling confident enough that I won't need a dual boot and instead I'll just run Linux on a dedicated machine.

The machine in question is an Omnibook 6000 with the following specs...

P III 600Mhz
128 MB Ram
ATI Mobility M1
ESS Maestro
Removable CD-ROM and 1.44 3.5" FDD units

Plus a wi-fi card (Netgear WG511 Mk2) - would I be able to get this working under Linux so that I could surf whilst away from home? The Omnibook will
used for playing the odd game, watching films, surfing and word processing.

Before posting, I did a google search on the forum for similar threads but there wasn't much and sites that cover Linux & laptops are a little vague. Which distro would you reccomend for a machine of this specification and my needs? I look forward to all your suggestions and advice on this as I'm just itching to get going and I'm quite excited about "A world without windows"

Thanks... ... Read more

Answer:Ready to ditch Win for Linux, but which distro should I choose for my laptop?

What type of games are you playing?
There is an unfortunate lack of support for a lot of games under Linux. There are people working on it, but it takes time..

Your wi-fi card looks to be supported, though you may need to do some work if you've got the one made in china.

Since you're new to linux, maybe Ubuntu (or Kubuntu, which uses KDE as window manager (Linus Torvalds choice window manager)) would be best suited for you...

My father is looking to buy a new laptop. He wants something which is very light. He is currently looking at Dell Inspiron Mini 12.The only downside with this laptop is that it has only 1 GB RAM and it doesn't have any optical drive. What is your opinion about the Intel Atom Z530 processo provided in this laptop?

The laptop will be mainly used for viewing PPT presentations, some internet surfing, Word processing, etc.

Is the above laptop a good choice? What are the other options for him in the lightweight laptops range? His budget is around $650 (35000 INR).

Edit: Please mention the price of the laptop(s) you recommend.

Answer:Which laptop to choose? Dell Inspiron Mini 12 suggestions.

Samsung NC10 (top rated)
Advent 4211c

Neither have a CD drive but both are superb. You can always add a slimline external CD/DVD drive later powered by a USB port. If lightweight is paramount it's about the only way to go.

I personally have the Advent 4211c and it will do all you say including playing videos and DVD's with no problems. Both these Netbooks have the Intel Atom processor and both are highly recommended. They are not short on extras either, check them out via Google.

I'm young, so bear with me, I don't know a lot of technical computer terms.
I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

Within this short span of time we have changed two QMS softwares and still the error with software persists. After a long research I found Unipoint software . Before proposing it to management I would like to recognize the feedback if anyone ever used it. If you know any other good software, please avail information about that too. Question: Help to choose!!!!

I have a question?? I am going to start junior year and i need a good quality laptop i want one for at least 3 years! I want one for gaming , school and multimedia... Should i buy the Lenovo Y570 or should i wait for the Lenovo Y580 my budget is 900 dollars! Thans! Or wich one would you recomend!

Answer:Help to choose!!!!

Well obviously you aren't very subtle with your intentions.  If your really intending on buying a laptop for schoolwork, you might as well buy a $100 laptop.  Multimedia-wise?  Similar response.  However with gaming, it's kinda tricky.  The y570 is powerful and a great laptop, especially with a high-end graphics card of the nvidia 555 gtm.  This lappy can run all games on high settings (most that I know of, Witcher 2 or Mirror's Edge, not so sure).  However, with my y570, it's having some graphics problems with some games.  Crysis 2 has been somewhat a catastrophe (a legit copy), and due to the heating issues, the graphics card is never used to its full potential.  Games like GTA IV and LA Noire will be able to run, but will somewhat be slower than expected.  Don't be alarmed though, its just that there are some heating problems.  The laptop can run them smooth at a good fps.  So being a high end laptop graphics card, there are some flaws, but the y570 is a good purchase.  Plus, even if you wait til the 580 comes out, I doubt it will be around $900.  It will be noticably larger.  If your not the heavy gamer, this laptop is perfect.  LoL, Starcraft 2, WoW, SWTOR, all these not so high graphical games will run at a crisp fps.  So my recommendation, if your budget will stay $900 til the 580 comes out, then you should just buy this one.

hi people,

should i sell my current hd and buy a new 120 gb hd or can i stick with my current hd n get another 80 gb...i m gonna buy sata so also i wanna know if sata n my baracuda can be run together or not... (i m confused bout should i buy seagate sata 80/120 gb or western digital 80/120 gb with 8 mb cache as both have 7200 rpm, which is better in terms of performance..

Can a normal barracuda n a sata whn run together cause any problem in terms of performance.. :dead:

Answer:need help to choose hd

Check you mobo manual if you can run SATA as non-Raid.
On that old(er) mobo, it's better anyway to buy an additional 80 or 120GB IDE harddisk and keep your old one.
Seagate Barracuda would be perfect. It's more important to have a low access-time than a big HD-cache.
With such a low-performance CPU you wouldn't notice the difference between SATA and IDE.

What would be a good motherboard/CPU upgrade (I would like to stay with AMD and if possible get a board that can use my current RAM now but be able to upgrade RAM later).

I f I were upgrading I would definitely go with a NForce 2 chipset based board they are fast and by most accounts much more stable than Via chipsets the asus A7N8X look very nice.

CPU's depends on how much money your willing ot spend. right now I personally wouldnt go beyond the AMD 2400 its almost 200.00 if cost is an issue I would go with the AMD 2100.

I hope that you can help me?? I'm looking to buy a new PC and the main use will be for gaming i.e. FPS and sports.

The problem that I have is that the area of graphics cards is a minefield to me as there are so many makes and models.

Can someone detail the type of card required to run this type of software and peferably an upper and lower range of card.

I've seen a PC that has a Radeon 256mb 9800XT but not sure if this is too much or wheter I can get by with a lower spec card.

To be honest I'm stuck and appreciate any help or advice given.

Answer:Please help me choose a PC?

Basically, if your gaming, you need an Nvidia or ATI card, the newer the better in this area. I believe the newest cards are the ATI X800 and Nvidia 6900 or so. Both are 500 dollar cards.

I have bought systems from on a few occasions and been happy. They sell a good machine for a good price.

I have a customer's 32-channel surveillance DVR that's getting a lot of heavy use, and he's asked me to look at hardware upgrades for it. He wants to boost it to the max 4GB RAM it will take (yes, we're aware 32-bit XP will only use 3.5-ish GB), and he wants to look at a CPU upgrade.

Since Intel's branched off all over the place with their designs and model names, and clock speeds are less and less relevant, it's hard to keep track of what types are better than others any more (other than Celeron still being pretty much bottom of the barrel).

So for those who know: the following link lists compatible CPUs for the board I'm dealing with... I want to know which are the best to look at: CPU-Upgrade: ASUS P5GC-VM processor support and specifications

Present CPU is:

CPU Name Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
CPU Code Name Cedar Mill
Vendor GenuineIntel
Number of Bits 64
Instruction Set MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, ET64, XD, EST
Platform Name Socket 775 LGA
Revision D0
Technology 65 nm

Hi, i was wondering what would i choose

On one hand, i have:
2x GTX 295 and 4 Normal HD in Raid 0

And in the other hand i have
2x GTX 285 and SSD TorqX 256gb

The SSD i would have to chip from USA, and there is the possibility for them to steal my HD in the mail.

Answer:What should i choose?

If you want speed, go for the SSD - nothing beats it, Raid or not. But check out the OCZ Vertex and Intel X25M too. In any case make sure there is Trim support in the firmware - else the writes will slow down over time. W7 supports Trim and also does all the other usual tweaks (alignment, Superfetch disable, etc.) automatically. Real nice fit.
You could even consider a smaller SSD (60 or 80GBs would be ample for W7) plus a larger HDD for the bulk data.

Question: Help me choose

Hi i have to make decision among these computers. Please help me with my decision. experts please tell me why i should buy one vs other.

3 post down i have uploded comparision.doc please download and suggest.

Answer:Help me choose

On the amount of RAM on #3, I'm assuming it's running VISTA. Of course, the others could also be running VISTA as well.
I would normally select #2 even though I'm an AMD person, but since it has an integrated graphics chipset, I'll have to go with number 3. BUT, the graphics card has to go. I'm also assuming the graphics card is a PCI-e based upon it being an AM2 processor and board. Since you didn't state what brands these are, nor did you state if you are going to use them for gaming, I'm just going to go with the flow. If you are going to game with it, AND you select #2 anyway, (and assuming again, that it has a PCI-e slot), you'll still have to install a new graphics card.
But, if you go with #3, and the additional $300 isn't an issue, for what you'd save on purchasing #3, you can pick yourself up a really decent Direct X10 card. The 8800 GT's seem to be a popular, high quality card right now, so that's just my opinion. If you're not using it for gaming, then definitely go with #2.

I'm about to upgrade my pc. I've singled it down to 2 machines. One has the following specs:
Primary Drive: DVD+/-RW
Processor Type: Intel Celeron E3400 Dual Core
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Processor Speed: 2.6ghz
Features: USB Ports
Memory (RAM): 4gb DDR3 Memory
Hard Drive: 500gb Sata Hard Drive
Motherboard : Asus P5G41C-M
Graphics Card : Onboard Intel GMA4500 Graphics 1GB
The other has the following specs:
Primary Drive: DVD+/-RW
Processor Type: AMD Athlon X2 250 Dual Core Processor
Processor Speed: 3.0GHz - 3.4GHz
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium
Features: USB Ports
Operating System Memory (RAM): 4 GB
Chip Type: AMD Athlon X2
Hard Drive: 500 GB
The bottom one is basically £12 more than the top.
Any ideas which one would be best?

Answer:Which One Should I Choose?

Square Box AV
A brief tot up of the component prices of your first PC (with some filling on of blanks), and it comes in at around £240. The bottom option, not surprisingly, comes in at about £15 more.
They're both reasonable specs for the money, assuming you're not being quoted too much in excess of the prices I've given. My personal choice (without knowing more about the companies selling the PCs and prices charged) would be the AMD PC.

Answer:Which one to choose?

I despise Acer and although Packard Bell stopped selling computers in the US sometime in the 90s I despise them as well. You would be much better of looking into a quality brand laptop, like Asus or MSI. Examples:

I'd search more but that site loads slowly for me and I can't search too well since I don't know the language.

After i reformatted my laptop, i installed xp pro instead of the original xp home. Now it gives me the option of booting XP PRO or XP Home. I know home doesn't even exist on the machine because i just did a reformat. How do i tell the comp to forget about it? any info is much appreciated.

Answer:two OS's to choose!

Control Panel --> System --> Advanced.

At the bottom under "Startup and Recover," choose "Settings."

Then, under "System Startup," click "Edit." This will allow you to manually edit your "boot.ini" file. Just delete the line containing OS that you are no longer using.
