Preferred Solution: TYPO I meant CTL.DLL ERROR BSOD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Memory corruption caused by an unknown driver. Please run memtest and driver verifier.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

I downloaded DDS to my desktop and double clicked on it. I said yes to the permissions screen, and got the following message:

Appreciate any help on this.

Answer:Error Message DDS is not meant to be run in 'Compatability Mode.'

Hello sweetrosette,

What is the problem in your computer? Can you give me information?

Please do the following:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
Make sure the Addition.txt button is ticked.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Okay helping a friend via long distance phone calls and the random email. This is the only info I have, if someone could shed some light on this and help, we both would appreciate it. Here is the email she was able to send:

"Still messing with that damn trojan. AVG sees it and asks the usual, delete, heal, or move to vault. No matter how many times I choose delete, or heal or even move, it comes back again and again. This is what was causing my IE to try and dial out (at least, that's what I get from looking online for info on this damned thing) and share my info with the hacker. Avast does not seem to see...this file. It is saving itself (and apparently restoring itself) in my Windows folder as a dll file. prntsvr.dll to be exact.

The name AVG gives is PSW.Dumarin.C. The last thing I tried was to turn my

Question: Microsoft Typo

Microsoft made a typo in their WinSAT application, How can we let them know about it?

Answer:Microsoft Typo

Hi Steven,

You can try contacting them by following the link below. Whether or not you will get a response I cannot say. I have managed to locate the error in the 'WinSAT.exe' file (notice the space between the letters), and you can edit it to replace the erroneous 'o' with an 'i', however by doing so you will probably cause it to fail an SFC scan. In my opinion, it is such a minor error that it is probably best left ignored.

I mistyped a url earlier (I believe i typed 'radiosahck' instead of radioshack) and was redirected to a strange website (something about internet surveys I believe) I closed it right away and did a quick scan with malwarebytes to make sure nothing was wrong, and it came up empty. I'm probably being a bit paranoid here, but is this anything to really worry about?

Answer:Odd URL typo redirect...

Redirects can be something to worry about, as you have no idea what content is being hosted on the re-direct. Most popular anti virus programs, have real-time scanning, where it's constantly scanning your computer, and as soon as you're redirected to a bad website, it will block any content that's harmful to your computer. I use Eset and it does this.

So I was browsing around in Windows Defender (Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender > Open Windows Defender Security Center > Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings, then scroll down to Controlled folder access.)

The sentence "Protect your files and folders from unauthorized changed by unfriendly applications" has a typo in it.
(Refer to the attached picture)

Either:
? The word "changed" has a typo in it and should be the word "changes" (with an 's' instead of a 'd'), or
? There is at least one missing word in between the words "unauthorized" & "changed"
Somebody should inform Microsoft about this typo.

But Also: I noticed that this is a new option, since the last time I was browsing around in there. What does this option exactly do? It was originally off, but I turned it On. Yet I must say that I have seen a few messages pop up in the right corner of the screen, stating that Windows Defender blocked some programs from making changes. One of them showed explorer.exe from modifying the Favorites folder without me doing anything with Favorites. Exactly what does this option do? Is it kind of like some sort of strict "Firewall"? Because if so, then I like that.

Answer:HAH, I Found A Typo In Windows!

Mine says 'unauthorised' (but then it should in the UK) - still has the typo though

Blocks access to your files and documents by unknown apps (malware/ransomware). It's off by default because not all 'good' apps are in it's 'trusted' list. It takes a bit of fiddling to get all your apps to work after you turn it on.

Hi can someone please help clear up my concerns because I accidentally interned the wrong DNS address on my new router.
After entering this typo I almost immediately that my connection was unstable especially on Linux and yesterday evening when I logged back into my router the DNS settings were set to there defaults. But I was able to surf the web kinda in Windows though it timed out often and certain webpages wouldn't even open, and now when ever I enter the correct DNS settings it disconnects from the internet.

Here's what I entered

222.67.222.222
220.67.220.220

Instead of

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

I'm really feeling uneasy and stressed about this, any advice?

Why does stuff like this happen whenever your in poor health or any other of life's trials and complications?

Answer:Open DNS typo on router

Two things you might check:

1. In Windows, do your Network Properties have a DNS Server entry(s) that point(s) to your router (probably 192.168.1.1 or close) or do they point to the published OpenDNS IP addresses? Easy check: From an Elevated Command Prompt: ipconfig /all

2. After you corrected the DNS router entries, did you have the router do a cold reboot?

I believe you shouldn't overly stress yourself over this if you didn't make any financial transactions. But new passwords could be needed.

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing the red typo lines when there are no typos. This happens on occasion when I'm typing emails and posting or responding to forums. It seems to occur when there is an actually typo and I correct the error. After that the entire post/email from that point on will have the red typo lines.

For example it is happening now... I'll try to post a pic for a better understanding.

Has anyone experience this as well and most importantly does anyone know of a solutions to this?

My unit is new and I have yet to DL Office 365 so I don't have Word. Not sure if that will matter.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

I am having a problem when i misspell URLs.

When i type things like google.con instead of .com, i am redirected to a host of different search sites, including searchathand.com, and daplaces.com. I am pretty sure i must be infected with something, but i have ran several online and offline spyware and malware scanners and nothing seems to find a problem.

I am running Firefox version 1.5.0.6, but the problem also occurs in IE as well.

Advise please!

Cheers

Joel

Edit: I seem to have found what i think is the culprit for this...but this leads to another problem.

There is a HJT entry stating
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A2EA3617-0DD4-4C7B-89EC-1F1FB24D96E1}: NameServer = 85.255.114.7 85.255.112.174

I have removed this on a couple of occasions and it only returns a few minutes later.

Help please!!!

for your information:

Spyware authors and phishing fraudsters yanked an old scam out of the playbook Wednesday by directing malicious code at Internet users who may be prone to typing or spelling deficiencies, according to security researchers.

Finnish security firm F-Secure said they discovered an attack aimed at Web surfers attempting to land on Google's (Quote, Chart) homepage, but who may have mistyped the Web address.

Internet users who punch in "Googkle.com" are treated to a host malicious code, as the computer gets slammed with a heap of the unwanted software that is automatically downloaded and installed. The malware includes: Trojan droppers, Trojan downloaders, backdoors, a proxy Trojan and a spying Trojan. A few adware-related files are also installed, the firm said.

NAME: Googkle
ALIAS: Googkle.com

Summary

F-Secure staff has found a malicious website that utilizes a spelling error when typing the name of the popular search engine - 'Google.com'. If a user opens a malicious website, his/her computer gets hijacked - a lot of different malware gets automatically downloaded and installed: trojan droppers, trojan downloaders, backdoors, a proxy trojan and a spying trojan. Also a few adware-related files are installed.

The name of the malicious website is 'Googkle.com'. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS WEBSITE! Otherwise your computer will get infected! We have reported the case to the authorities.

Is there a way to tell Microsoft Word to "guess" what I mean every time I make a typo? For example, I type "tsanding," and instead of changing it to "standing," it underlines it red. I know I can then right-click it, and select AutoCorrect > standing, so that, from now on, if the same exact typo arises in the future, in which I accidentally type "tsanding," it'll change it to "standing." I've thus far collected *hundreds* of specific typo corrections in this way. But that's very time-consuming, and is only a weak attempt at preventing typos I may be likely to make in the future (based on the fact that I made the exact typo at least once before). Is there any way to establish that I want Microsoft Word to go ahead and correct every single "underlined red" occurrence from now on, based on its best guess as to what I meant? (except in cases where the typo was so bad that it has no guess at all) That way, when it corrects something I *didn't* want corrected, I can then go back and add what I wanted to its dictionary, to tell it not to consider that word an accident from then on.

Answer:Is there a way to tell Microsoft Word to "guess" what I mean every time I make a typo?

Found this in the Word Help files. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options. In the Replace box, type a word or phrase that you often mistype or misspell ? for example, type usualy. In the With box, type the correct spelling of the word ? for example, type usually. Click Add. Is this what you're talking about?

So I decided to buy Windows 7 from eBay. I didn't trust the people selling product keys only, so I purchased a brand new retail package. When I shop on eBay, I always look for sellers that are really close to me so shipping is fast. So I found a seller, said to be located in Maryland (which is two states away from me), with a great price and great feedback for his W7 sells. I was pissed because when the guy sent me the tracking number, I found out that the item was coming from Beijing, China, not Maryland! But I figured, well at least he shipped it.

THEN, I get an email from eBay saying the listing for the item I just purchased because the copyright holder reported that the item may be a counterfeit. At first I was pissed at eBay because now I had to record of the transaction in my eBay account and could not contact the seller directly from within the item invoice, since eBay deleted. Plus, he had several other sells of this same item, all with positive feedback of the W7 package, and eBay did not remove the listings for them. So I was like, why me? Luckily, I had his email from paypal and contacted him. He assured me that he is the legal owner of the item and that he sent proof to eBay saying so. Still never got my records back.

Anyway, this prompted me to search counterfeit Windows 7 retail packages. I found some interesting info, but my package doesn't fit any of the counterfeit profiles Microsoft says to look out for. The top hologram is built onto the ... Read more

I have a P4 system overclocking a 2.00ghz to 2.6 (Nice and stable, don't worry)

I have just started folding, and I've noticed that it looks like it's going to take 2 days aprox!

this is only a 153 pointer!

Take a look at the attached picture.

Is there a way I can make it any faster (Note that it is using 90% CPU) through software methods?

Answer:FAH - meant to be this slow?

Just found out my system isn't as stable as I thought. Downclocked to 2.4 now

Well, now the first Serial ATA drives are being seen..but..I don't see them "revolutionizing" anything at all. I mean, they are JUST as fast as ATA133 if I'm not mistaken. And I don't really want to pay 50 dollars more for better air flow. I can just buy a few more fans for 10 dollars. Any comments?

Answer:Is SATA all what it's meant to be?

yea, it seems the PCI bus is limiting speeds to 100MBps anyway. Theorectically, the Serial ATA bus is capable of much faster speed, but in operation, it just isnt worth upgrading right now.

Hi I've recently built my pc with a lot of help from a friend but I've run into a problem my CPU is:

http://www.ebuyer.com/538278-fx-9590-4-7ghz-16mb-220w-wof-skt-am3-l2-l3-16mb-220w-fd9590fhhkwof

and my motherboard is

http://www.ebuyer.com/269072-asus-m...annel-hd-audio-matx-motherboard-m5a78l-m-usb3

I'm a novice PC builder so I let my friend choose the parts and he assured me the parts were all compatible but this error says otherwise.

I've updated the bios to the latest but I'm not sure my cpu was even on the list of supported cpus...Can anyone please offer me advice?

Oh and I have to keep resetting my cmos whenever I turn on m pc or the monitors just go to sleep.

Answer:CPU meant to be 4.7 but shows 4.0

FX 9590 is a high Watt CPU and was only supported on a few of the very high end motherboards. That board is not one of the supported boards and in actuality is not designed for that class of overclocking and power.

The only boards with guaranteed FX 9370 & 9590 support are a few of the 990FX boards: The Asus Crosshair V-Z, The ASrock Extreme9, Asus Sabertooth, and the 2 Gigabyte 990FX Extreme boards.

I would return that motherboard and pick up one of those boards to replace the one you have otherwise you will probably run into issues. This particular Motherboard you bought only support up to 140Watt CPU's where as the 9590 is a 220Watt CPU.

My attempt at building a system can just sit in the old closet. Doesnt look like I could do it but I did try.

I finally got it to boot from the cd rom I put into it from another computer but when after XP Pro finished copying its files and said it would reboot in 15 seconds, every time it reboots it just goes right back to the whole installation process again. I went into the BIOS and under boot sequence chose hard disk as the start up boot and it stopped at Verifying DMI POOL DATA..........................It doesnt get any farther.

As far as the other initial problem in another post on this subject, I believe it was the Hard Drive failure. From this point though, windows xp pro wont go any further than its initial copying of files and then trying to start up again.

Maybe I just shouldnt mess around with computers anymore I mean I have lost patience already and its only day 1 of trying to figure out what went wrong.

hi

MY XP PRO LOCKS UP SOLID!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was under the impression this was NOT meant to happen.

I have seen old machines running ME which seem to do alot better.

first I thought it might be the wireless mouse but I put new batteries in it.
the keyboard buttons won't work etc. only option it the conveniently located reset button on my pc

intel pentium 4 2.6
1GB RAM
37 GB Hard Drive

who is fighting with who?

I do have spysweeper, zonezlarm, pestpatrol and eacceleration stopsign looking after me in the background, plus windows firewall is active and interent explorer popup killer is on.
they do a great job too. I seem to be very safe from malware.
I guess someone is the bad guy; does anybody know who?

thanks

Answer:xp pro locks up !!!! not meant to be possible.........

It could be malware, it could be something else - maybe a heat problem, RAM, some other hardware going out etc. I'd start by using a regular mouse and change the keyboard.

Ok... i recently installed - then uninstalled because it's crap - MusicFrost. Apparently it came with a toolbar. I have also removed that. But my new tab page keeps gonig to C:\Program Files\MusicFrost\Music Frost Toolbar\index.htm (it was going to "Custom Search" with a google search bar but now it just goes to the "Cannot connect" page as it's no longer on my desktop. How exactly do i change it so it goes to the normal New Tab page? I've tried Tools - Internet options - Tabs Then selecting "The New Tab Page" option but it won't work, it still seems to think it should open that page. This has happened before with a different thing and last time just re-installing my ie8 worked but it hasn't this time. Any ideas? Iwant my new tabs page because it has the inprivate options and my recently closed tabs all in one place etc.

Answer:IE8 New tab not displaying what it's meant to.

Ok, forget that, i tried to uninstall my ie using the add/remove windows components in add/remove programms (control panel) but that really didn't work as planned. It started coming up with "Windows internet explorer provided by MSN and Bing" in the bar(The blue bar at top of almost everything windows opens) I used system restore to take myself back to a previous state - it solved previous problems about my tabs, but the new thing (provided by msn and bing) is still there. Is this something i've just never noticed before or can i sort this, it's rather annoying. I've tried running the ie8 installer from microsoft (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/internet-explorer/products/ie/home) but when i try to run that i get the message "Windows cannont uninstall the version of Internet Explorer 8 that is currently on your computer. To install a new version (one that still cannot be removed), click OK. To stop the installation, click Cancel" Does this mean i'll have two versions of ie8 that i can't get rid of or what? Or does it simply mean it'll put in the new version and i can't uninstall the new stuff??? Please help this is confusing the hell out of me right now.

I keep getting error messages whenever I try to upgrade to IE 11. I've checked on the Tech Guy site about this and I've checked the Microsoft website. If my interpretation of what was said on the Microsoft site is correct IE 11 was issued to suit Windows 8 more that it was for Windows 7.
Which brings me to my question. Has anyone here been able to to upgrade to IE11? If so, did you have any problems with the upgrade?

Hi all, Just trying to streamline my pc etc.. I analysed C drive before i defragged it and the only fragmented file was a 2gb pagefile.sys. This is kind of strange as I've set the pagefile on a seperate physical drive (drive X). Anyway i've checked to make sure that the pagefile IS set on a different drive and it is. I've also searched for this pagefile.sys and can't find it anywhere on my pc at all, neither on C drive or X drive. Any help please???here i've got a screen shot of it. click herebasically it's where it shouldn't be. I've even set it to 0 now and rebooted for settings to take effect but it still shows has haveing 2GB pagefile!?!?! I've tried deleting the pagefile.sys but it says it's in use. However, the pagefile.sys on X drive, the one that was meant to be use was able to be deleted and wasn't modified since yesterday.... What's going on????Grr... I thought i'd sorted it! rebooted in safemode again and it showed correctly, no page file on C: and the correct amount on X:. Defragged and rebooted to desktop and there you... it's back on C drive again! yet it's not showing as being set on C drive. I must have something running on my system that's setting it to C drive as default. Any ideas anyone??_________________

I often receive spam with an email address that is similar to, but not actually mine. Eg if say my e-mail was [email protected], I get it for [email protected] or [email protected] I get enough rubbish coming to me at my proper e-mail address, so I don't need any more. Has anyone any ideas as to why this is happening, does it happen to anyone else, or am I just plain unlucky?

Answer:Why do I get spam meant for other people

If you could expand the addresses it was sent to , you'd see yours in there somewhere . What is happening is that the spammer is mass mailing every combination it can generate ending in your ISP's address , so it would say ...spuddy , spiky , spiro , etc. it's just that your email client can't show them all . I was often getting these several years ago , until I bought my own domain name , now I have a filter that is adjustable via my sellers web site so I can filter things before it is sent to me , for a few pounds a year ut works better than any mail washer or software spam filter . The terms DDR2 and PC2 are used interchangeably and means the same thing.

Your's using DDR2-800 memory, and your dad is using DDR2-667. The numbers ar in relation to the clock speed of the memory modules, and is measured in MHz. The DDR2 of the name is the type of memory, which can be either SD-RAM, DDR, DDR2 or DDR3. Most machines still use DDR2 memory, because DDR3 is still out of the affordable price range for most people.

DDR2-6400 and DDR2-800 are the same speed. 6400 is the speed at which single bits are accessed in the memory (1 bit per clock cycle), and 800 is the speed at which a full byte (8 bits) are accessed (1 byte per clock cycle). Work it out 800 * 8 = 6400.

Hope this helps.

Answer:high-end/low-end computers what is meant

High end = with ALL the bells and whistles (lots of RAM, high speed processor, etc) and rinky-dinky software (hence expensive!).Low end = not as much RAM, slower processor, not as much software (hence cheaper end of the market).Medium end = (surprise, surprise) somewhere in the middle.

my athlon computer is a 3000xp amd.. not 64 bit. my graphics card is 6600gt agp, i have 1 gb ram, 450 powersupply, 2 case fans. and my computer is about 50- 60 sometimes even 65 degrees celcius. why is this and is this normal

Answer:how hot is amd xp meant to be. mine is 50-60 degrees

I think that it depends on the processor itself and the type of cooling you have. I have an Athlon XP 2500 (barton) oc'd to the XP 3200. I upgraded from the stock heatsink/fan, and I also have 2 more fans for cooling. My cpu is usually between 38 - 44 degrees celcius.

Now, my sister has an older Athlon. I think it's the 1800. My brother and I have thrown everything we can at it as far as cooling(exception being water cooling!!). Her cpu runs between 70 - 74 degrees celcius!!

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I would say cooling and the type processor you have is the cause. While your temps are pretty warm, they're not fatal to your cpu. Although, if you're still running stock heatsink/fan, look for an upgrade....it should definitely help bring your temps down.

I've got a friend from work who occasionally has me over to work on a computer or two. They're a very computer illiterate household (by their own admission), so I've become their unofficial IT guy.

Anyway, she called me last week because she was confused about what a Comcast employee told her. Her mother passed away a few months ago, and she wants to set up internet access at her mother's house (she has to spend quite a bit of time there ... long story). She got a hand-me-down computer that is pretty old (Windows 98), but still seems to function fine. She wasn't sure what exactly to do with it for setting up (internet access and just plugging everything in), so Comcast sent a technician, telling her he'd be able to set up the computer and the internet access.

The technician arrived, took one look at the computer and told her he couldn't set it up. He said he can't do it because it is Windows 98, and she needed Windows XP. He said it wouldn't work with Windows 98, and that she need to go to Wal-Mart and buy a copy of XP. He also told her to just put in the disc and do what it says.

I've got a few problems with this (sort of going off-topic here):

1. I'd never have someone who knows nothing about computers install an operating system.

2. He didn't actually look at the hardware to determine if she could even run XP (she can, but just barely).

3. He told her to buy XP when it is mere weeks a... Read more

Answer:Trying to figure out what exactly Comcast meant...

I'd tell them to just hook up the modem, verify it works, and you'll do the rest. There's no reason to require windows XP

hi i got bigpond internet a little while ago and so did my cousin he got 12 gig 1.4 meg per sec and i got the 25 1 meg per sec package nowwhen i do a speed test i get around 7888 but when i download max download speed is 176kb i did another speed test and like before around 7888 so i / by 8 and got 999 or something like that when i download from mocrosoft.com download speed of 999 like it meant to be and same at my cousins house anything we download from microsoft.com downloads at the right speed when i download from bigpond 550kb its meant to be 1 meg all the time what wrong with it.

Answer:internet going slower then meant to be

Hi i am not known,

The speed of your downloads is influenced by several factors, one of them being the speed offered by the site yoiu connect to. The problem may not be at your end. It is also common for servers to offer certain download speeds at an average. This means there will be times of the day when the speed they offer is what you might expect and other high-traffic times when they can't keep up. Try downloading at different times of the day. Also, you might call bigpond and ask them why there are these discrepancies?

I have a CD ROM of the Haldeman Diaries which came out in 1994.. The hardware requirement is Win 3.1 or greater. . When I try to load it on my XP SP 2 machine
it says it needs to load Quick Time 1.1.. It then continues to install and eventually says
Installation Sucessfull. However, when I attempt to play the program I get " Unable to load Quick Time - photos will not be displayed " I then get " Create Window Failure " and then "Start Splash Register Class error " ( both in there own GUI box ) That's it.

I understand that Win 3.1 was 16 bit and XP is 32 bit and that Quick Time 1.1 is older than dirt. I am just wondering if someone on the forum can think of some work around.
This is not a serious problem it is just something I would like.
The CD was published by Sony Electronic Publishing which has since morphed into 989 Studios which runs Sony Playstation games. I have contacted them but so far to no avail.

I have received numerous emails meant for the Illinois Corn Growers Association. Apparently, when an email was sent by them, to these email addresses, somehow, though the return address says "[email protected]", I get the emails from the unhappy people. I also got one about an order from American Eagle Outfitters. My internet provider tech support guy said you are the people to ask. What is going on and how do I stop it!!!!!

Answer:emails sent to me, meant for somone else

The simplest thing to do is go HERE and download the free MailWasher. You can use it as your primary eMail client to filter unwanted messages, and only invoke your real eMail client once your mailbox is cleaned up. This is also a MAJOR tool for preventing eMail messages with virus and other undesirable attachments (ie. porn). You can get additional information on MailWasher here at TSG by doing a search on...
mailwasher
If I were you I would just set up filters to automatically delete all the messages that are not wanted and move on.

I shared a room for a week with a weird guy who had schizophrenia, and had weird problems with his sexuality, and he was targeting my girlfriend(she and her sister were renting him a room in their house) and he did questionable things so my girlfriend asked me to look into her computer(he's very computer savy) and I discovered this guy had been watching child porn, so I confronted him about it. A few days later he told me that 'quid pro quo' he had seen my logs in whats app with my brother(I had asked him for relationship advice) on my blocked phone(he knew the pattern or knew how to hack into it). I also took my laptop and left it open in the house(after all, I was never afraid of him and I work on my laptop), and there have been a couple of things that have made me worried that he might have set something up in my computer.
1.- Whenever I shutdown it tells me that another user is logged in and shutting down might lose some unsaved changes, I only have one account on my computer.
2.- I had some weirdness installing anti-malware. I installed kaspersky, activated the free trial, and ran update in order to run a scan in safe mode. Whenever I went into safe mode it displayed that it wasn't activated and I couldn't do anything, even if I ran safe mode with networking enabled. And if I ran kaspersky in normal mode, it ran without problems. This and other small things that had never happened before made me suspcious. And he knows plenty of computers so I'm very suspicious now.

Answer:Satellite A660/07R - what is meant to come in the box?

Recovery DVDs are not supplied with notebooks. This must be also described in User?s manuals document. There is also described that you must create recovery DVD alone using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery media creator?.

There is also not some additional software disc. All software is already preinstalled and it is a part of recovery image (recovery DVD).

Instead of DDS use FRST as described in the following instruction:

I bought this laptop not too long ago. It has Vista on it, of coarse, and since it included a 3D card, I have been playing a few games on it lately. Just the other day, I was playing FF8, and it requires that my screen goes to 600 by 800 mode. It works fine, but ever since I started playing games that go into that mode, sometimes when I shut them down, the computer will stay in that mode. I'll restart my computer, and after loggin, the screen will be at normal size, then the screen will flash black, then it will be at a smaller size.

I can get back to the previous screen size with no problem (usually), but having to do that almost every time I log on is somewhat annoying.

Is there a fix to this problem of the screen size resizing itself on startup?

Thanks!

The top hologram is built onto the cds, no... Read more

Answer:My Windows 7 copy looks counterfeit. Typo on back cover. Came from China (eBay). Pics

It's fake, that's pretty obvious. The hologram thing is most likely a sticker on top of the actual disc surface - you can use a fingernail or razor blade at the very edge and lift it up a bit, that's 100% proof. The part numbers don't seem to match up with the actual Windows 7 Ultimate part number, and it just has a fake quality all the way around.

If you contact Microsoft, show them the pics, explain where you bought it from and your situation, there is a small - small but it exists - chance they'll provide you with a key just for making the report and identifying the seller you got it from.

No guarantees, but at the moment you're better off reporting it to them and going from there. Sure can't hurt to let them know, either way.

I'd report it, personally, without even really thinking about it. It just SCREAMS fake.

This happened only a little while ago today after I shut down my laptop, when I opened it up a red cross appeared where the bar showing  the internet connection is. I can access the internet fine though which is weird (at roughly 12MB). It's not a big problem, but I would prefer if I could see the connection bar again.
This is what it looks like:

Hey. I bought this Dell Inspiron11 laptop a year ago. I don't use it much, but I notice that it's quite slow/laggy at times. For example, when starting online flash games, the window can go unresponsive/freeze for a while or even crash. Or when it's under slightly heavier tasking it can freeze for a few moments too...People have told me this is normal, but is it really? Thanks.

Answer:Is My Laptop Meant To Be This Slow/Laggy?

It's a little underpowered for 64-bit OS, but it does meet minimum requirements.  Does it have a hard disk drive or a solid state drive?  If HDD, consider a SSD replacement.  It may be an eSATA drive or eMMC drive.  The former is replaceable, the latter is not.

If this is impossible to do, it's not a big deal, but just in case...

There's agirl I went to high school with that is now an amateur model. I think it's neat that I know her, and she knows me - we aren't friends really, more just two people who shared some classes together back in the day.

On one photographer's website, there are a few pictures of her that I'd love to save to my computer (not for duplication), but when I right click on them, a little box pops up saying 'Image copy not permitted'. Is there anyway to get around that?

Thanks,

My laptop died over the weekend, having managed to resurrect the hard drive (its only 7 months old) I got it to boot from the CD and I clicked on "install now" instead of the repair computer option.

Is there an easy way to get rid of the new install of Vista and then get the old version repaired, so that I don't have to set everything up again? Its saved windows, program files folders etc in a Windows.old folder. Would it just be a matter of copying these folders back out of the windows.old folder, or is there a better or more recommended way of doing it?

Its Vista Home Premium, on a Dell Inspiron 1545

TIA

So Lenovo seem to advise that driver updates come directly from the Lenovo website. Now, I don't know about you guys but for my laptop, most of the updates are several months old. Of course, not every driver actually needs constant updates but I'll give an example. My AMD graphics card (R7-M360) has driver updates available from both Lenovo and AMD. AMD offer the very latest Crimson ReLive version of their Radeon software while Lenovo's last graphics card update (for my laptop) was in March and not even Crimson. It seems rather strange that Lenovo are so many versions behind for several drivers so I ask you all: Is it the same for you and why is it so? Also, is it a good idea to use AMD or Lenovo's driver software?

I DON'T GET IT!!!!  AND IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!My laptop (aprox 5 years old) has a recordable cd drive; my Imation CDs say they are CD ReWritable.  1) I put in a blank CD, copied a folder to it, and then considered that I would like to create a folder for this to be a subfolder of.  I created a new folder and gave it a distinct name.  Then I tried to move the original folder to the new folder.  I got a message saying there was trouble moving file "a" to the new folder.  I re-tried.  I had expected that all the files would simply move as a unit, subfolder to new folder.  I tried file "b", etc.  I erased the CD and tried again.  Why can't I move an existing folder on a CD to another folder?  I also can't move the individual file.  I keep getting told all these things are read only.  I finally realized I had to set up a folder first on the CD and copy files directly to the folder, since I won't be able to move them later.  2) Why are these files read only?  Can I change that?  This means I have to keep a copy of the original file on my hard drive and make my changes on that, and then the changed version will replace original version on the CD.  Since the CD is rewritable, why can't I just make changes on the file on the CD?  I was hoping to get some files off my hard drive. Those were personal files/folders I was refering to... ...so, first off, dear reader, I'd just like to keep you assured that I checked the instructions for posting.
I simply ran into a bit of a speed bump....being unable to run DDS.com. I suspect this has to do with Windows 8 (in)compatibility.

It merely opens a dialog box that says "DDS is not meant to be run in 'Compatibility Mode'. The program shall now exit."
I checked, but I found no tab in the file's "Properties" for Compatibility, so I am unsure of what to do next to obtain a log.
If you have instructions on how to go about doing so, I would appreciate it greatly.

As for the malware itself, I have an icon on the desktop for "AnyProtect", as well as a popup window on startup for "Optimizer Pro".
The "Program Files (x86)" directory contains new folders for "AnyProtectEx", "DeltaFix", "Optimizer Pro", and "DealsToShop".

Again, appreciate this service tremendously. Having nasties on a computer is troubling (this batch came from an innocent family member) and it's incredible there are ways to fight the good fight against them.

(NOTE: if i should have posted this in another section, let me know and I will move it and delete the post.
I realize I don't have a log to offer, even though I attempted to get one)

Howdy,

A few days ago I posted a thread telling the problems I was having trying to install the Cumulative Win 10, Version 1607 Update (KB3189866) both through the Windows Update program and manually from the Windows Catalog Center Can't install KB318966 (Cumulative Update, Win 10, Version 1607)

Today I noticed that Windows Update attempted twice to update another Cumulative Update (KB3193494) meant to replace KB3189866. These attempts failed so I went to the Windows Catalog and tried installing it manually but that failed too.

Just curious if anyone else is experiencing the same problem again?

Thanks and regards,

Answer:KB3193494 meant to replace KB3189866 FAILS too!

On your other thread I said:

Bree said:

It's not clear (and MS aren't saying) why this particular update is problematic.

Well, now they have said something (a first?)

We encountered a network transmission issue that affected update 3189866, published on September 13, 2016. The quickest way to address this issue was to reissue the update to all Content Delivery Networks. This new update package, KB3193494, includes the same set of fixes as KB3189866. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3193494

The two CUs are identical as far as fixes go. I (eventually) got KB3189866 installed and it looks like Windows Update is intelligent enough not to offer me KB3193494 when I check for updates. So no - I'm experiencing no problems at all.

@Brink has a 'News' thread for KB3193494, that's the one to watch for problem reports (the old thread for
KB3189866 has 28 pages of them!).

I have a question regarding restore points; when I go into the system protection configuration settings one of the options is the setting for maximum disk space usage.

I had the slider set to 4% of my total disk memory which is about 27.45 GB, (I have a 750GB Hard drive). Is that where I should be? The amount of used disk space on that hard drive is about 380 GB. Of the three options given for restore settings I have ticked the "Restore System Settings and Previous Versions of Files".

I'm assuming that the 4% I have set in "Maximum Usage" is enough because it only needs to hold some system information reference links, (I think). What I mean is I don't think that the slider should be set to the same amount of gigabytes as the amount of used space on my hard disk, right?

I would appreciate an answer as soon as possible. Without going into too much detail the need for me to know this has a lot hinged on it.
Thank you, Rich

Answer:What is Meant by 'Max Usage' when configuring System Protection?

Hello wingclip and welcome to Seven Forums.

That slider lets you set aside a percentage of your total hard drive for restore points and other system info. Using just approximate figures, if you set aside 10% of your hard drive, you'd be left with about 675GB of usable hard drive space. (750GB - 75GB = 675GB.)

System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

NOTE: A hard drive rated as 750GB by the manufacturer really has only 698GB of usable space because the manufacturer says 1GB = 1000MB but the computer says 1GB = 1024MB. Not trying to make it confusing but the larger the hard drive the greater the difference in usable space.

I think you should be fine with 4%. If the 4% doesn't provide enough space for the next newest restore point, the oldest restore points(s) will automatically be deleted to make enough room.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I am Windows 98 user & almost 99% of my work revolves
around Outlook Express. The version is Outlook Express 5.
(Properties show Outlook Express 5.50.45.22.1200)

My Antivirus protection is Norton A/V 2002 Updated to May 24, 2002. My complete system scan does not show any Virus.

A couple of my business associates have claimed to have
received emails from me which I never sent them. Please note that is not the case of my Outlook Express producing random
emails which was a chain of viruses that everyone is aware of.
These are specific emails which I sent to 1 person but
a 2nd person is claiming to have received as BCC. What is most
painful is that almost all these emails are of confidential nature
and the unintended recepients are mainly competitors.

Why is this happening. Can I disable BCC completely. BCC header has been disabled from my side but I am sure this worm/virus will not be obstructed from simply disabling from the main messaging window

Any assistance from the Net gurus will be appreciated

Naveed
[email protected]

Answer:Outlook Express (People receiving my messages in BCC not meant from them)

Which mail service were you using?

I have heard of this happening to a few friends of mine and their Mail providers said it was a 'minor problem' with the actual mail package and not a virus.
(But I'm no security expert so wait for more posts!!)

Hello there!  I bought a Lenovo X60 Tablet about a week ago and when it arrived I found the battery didn't work, after looking into the ever helpful battery manager I found that there was supposedly irreparable damage and the battery should be replaced. The first thing I do is search for others with the same issue online and this threw up the following page: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-67765.html That's a recall program with my battery model number listed (42T5251) however the program has ended according to the page (8 months too late, darn!). I suppose what I'm here for is to beg for mercy, blame the whole incident on the previous owner being a business user with no sense and ask for a new battery. Seems silly to have such a brilliant laptop/tablet with no portability due to a dead battery... Many thanks in advance. Edit: looking back on this it doesn't seem obvious why I'm here, it's probably so that I can be shot down here instead of on the tech support line which is a problematic place due to lack of time and will to listen to smooth jazz. What's a guy to do in this situation?

Answer:X60 Tablet battery meant to be recalled but "program ended"

Oh dear, replying to my own post, just thought you deserved an update on what has happened so far. Recently I called Lenovo's UK tech support line and found myself talking to a person who wasn't exactly helpful, I was told to visit a page on a recall that I had seen before and which didn't cover my battery. Bearing in mind the phone call was getting quite lengthy by this point I gave up and decided to contact the company I bought the refurbished laptop from, they sent out another battery. Lo and behold, when the battery arrived I plugged it straight in and received once again the message "Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one." After searching through the recalls it seems that my battery (FRU = 93P5032) also suffered from the same problem however it was unfortunately just outside the recall range. I now sit here with two dead batteries, feeling slightly depressed. So that any helpful moderators reading this know, the first battery had been through 524 cycles while the latest dead battery has been through 414 cycles.

hi,

recently bought a tablet and installed the software.. after realising it is only for windows OS 95/98..ater restarting the comp like it asked me to; an error message comes up and gives me 5 or so options like.... restore windows to last good config point... start windows normally (i have to choose this as the keyboard does not work) or safe mode etc..

the usb keyboard which fails does allow me to get into BIOS though, after the first load screen the usb keyboard fails.. leaving me with no choice but to 'start windows normally' which then it freezes on the xp logo loading screen! so i have to problems....

1. how do i get my usb keyboard to work- do i need to buy an old keyboard(would that work ?)

2. what option do i select if i can when getting on the error message screen?

3. any other advice i need?

thanks for your help!

dont forget my usb keyboard fails after 1st load up screen

Answer:windows xp wont boot after installing software meant for 95/98 OS only- keyboard fail

Boot into Safe Mode. You may have to wait a few minutes until the USB gets recognized. If that doesn't work, try a PS2 keyboard (or USB to PS2 Adapter) Go into the Add Remove programs and Uninstall the software that you installed.

Hi, My apologies for asking something which has been asked and answered in many variations, but none of which has helped much.

I have three Win7 Home Premium x64 PCs called BoyToy (my main PC), Salsa, and Polka, all of which are wired to a D-Link DIR-655 router. I want to wake and shutdown Salsa and Polka from BoyToy using Aquila?s WakeOnLan utility (which can also control non-Windows PCs) or something similar.

After enabling the BIOS and Win7 settings, I?m able to ?Wake On LAN? both computers from BoyToy (yeah!) but I?m stuck on the Shutdown side?and I?ve tried many different combinations of utilities and settings.

Most recently, I?ve run Aquila?s Listener (part of their WOL utility) on Salsa with its Win7 firewall turned off and no AV running. Listener detects WOL messages sent from BoyToy (not surprising since WOL works) but it doesn?t detect Shutdown messages. From BoyToy, I?ve sent the shutdown message to different router addresses (255.255.255.255, 0.0.0.0, 192.168.1.255, and Salsa?s address) and the results are always the same: WOL detected; shutdown not.

I?m stuck because I don?t even understand how Shutdown is supposed to work in Win7. I?ve found lots of WOL documentation but not for Shutdown. I assume it?s totally different than WOL since the computer to be shutdown is awake so it has an IP address, the Shutdown message contains timer info, warning text, etc.

I?d really appreciate it if someone could explain to me how Shutdown is sup... Read more

I understand subnetting, cedar etc, and data replication as far as databases go...

But what is meant by replication as far as Microsoft Active Directory Services is concerened?

(examples of a few terms i could use a hand with)

The Active Directory physical structure governs when and how replication takes place. This is true of both intersite and intrasite replication

replication services

The site structure permits the management of Active Directory replication scheduling between sites

The few n+ books i read never covered this topic at all.

scheduling? replication? In an AD sense...
thanks

Answer:Solved: What is meant by "Active Directory" replication?

Think of it this way Active Directory is a Database of information. It stores within it computer accoounts, user acounts, OUs and all that good stuff. The replication is just that where it takes the contents of this database and moves it from one server to another using the replication service.

Here is a good example.

You have site A and Site B. Both sites have a servers but only Site A has an AD integrated server. All Site B users are actually going from site B to Site A to get their AD information. Should the link ever get severed from Site A to Site B those site B PC's would be in deep doo doo.

Now using the same scenario if you take Site B and add an AD server then the Site A would have an AD server and Site B would have an AD server and each site would access their own AD server and be happy if a link went down. If these 2 sites didn't replicate data what would happen? You would have 2 entirely different databases and it would make management a pain.

The main tool for checking replication is the Active Directory Replication Monitor.

Here is a good link -
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/it...ooting-active-directory-replication-problems/

As far as scheuling you can determine how often you want replication to occur so its not a burden on your bandwidth or other reasons.
