Hulu Causing Computer Lock-Up & Restart

Question: Hulu Causing Computer Lock-Up & Restart

My computer auto restarts or locks-up only when I'm watching Hulu on full screen. I was watching Hulu and paused it for maybe 5 to 10 min while I finished up a couple of things, I starting playing the video and about maybe 10 min later my PC just shut down & restarted, there was no BSOD it just restarted on its own. I dl CPUID to check my temps to see if it was maybe o'heating while i watched other videos on hulu but nothing, it worked like a champ & temps were around 35c I think. Does any one have any suggestions on what would cause my auto restart while watching Hulu.

Preferred Solution: Hulu Causing Computer Lock-Up & Restart

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am working on a computer for a lady at my work and was wondering if someone could offer some suggestions. The problem as she states is that the computer locks up after being online for 5 minutes, running MS word and IE together, or leaving the comptuer and coming back in a few minutes.

I have formatted the drive, reloaded Win98 and installed a new modem (old one was giving conflicts). I verified that all fans are running and the memory seems to be ok. It's only got 32mb RAM but the system seems to be running great.

Of course I can't get anything to lock up! I am currently running 5 MS Word windows and 7 IE windows. The comptuer has been typing now for 2 hours.

Is there anyway that a mouse, keyboard, or printer could cause the computer to lock up? That's the only thing left that I can think of since I am not using those parts of hers. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Hardware causing computer to lock?

Watch her once and see exactly what she is doing or what kinds of applications are running when she has a problem. Try and take the internet connection out of the equation and see if it will lock when only running apps. If it passes that test connect to the internet and watch your system resources every time you open a new app. What version of Windoze are you running? 32MB of memory is probably part of your problem.

Hello All,
Not sure if this should be in the Security or a different area.
I have a user where when ever he shuts his laptop lid for a couple minutes and opens it back up he gets locked out from the Company Wireless connection.
He is the only one who has this issue so I am unsure why this happens. The Wireless uses AD Authentication.
I even made it to prompt him for the password and everything when reconnecting.
This has not resolved the issue. I am about to the point to make the computer do nothing when he shuts the lid.

Does anyone have any clue why this would happen to one user? I currently have him set up on the Guest Network and using the VPN. Then when he uses a Ethernet cable he has no issues either. Everything points toward the one Wireless connection.

Any Ideas or thoughts?
Thanks,
Zach

Need help. I've got xp without sp's. Went to run windows update. It started it's download, I believe installing sp2. About 3/4's of the way through it locked up. The computer was froze. I ctr-alt-del to get task manager but nothing happened. So I waited awhile longer and still nothing. So I rebooted the comp. Now everytime I go to windows update through help & support or through mc's site, even just clicking on the link windows update help at mc's site locks up the computer. I have to end task to get the comp running again. I've searched high and low over the internet for the answer, ran spybot, virus scan, and even reloaded xp. Which when i did that and it asked for registration info i filled it out and sent it and it too locked up the comp. Again please help. THanks.

Hi,

Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on what is going on with my work computer. Every time I reset my computer (from the start menu) my account is locked out from the server at my work. If I simply log off, or do a complete shut down it doesn't happen. Only when I reset.

Does anyone have an idea of why this might happen?

Regards,
Dan

Answer:Restting computer causing account to lock out

Log off, then restart. Ask the IT dept at work if there are any security controls on the Domain Controller for your user account.

Hi there,

You guys have been so helpful in the past I am hoping you can help with a problem I am experiencing. My computer is older so I expect it to be slow but it has just been unbelievably laggy lately. The main thing that makes me thing I have some issue is when I try to shut down it takes awhile then I get a window that pops up and asks if I want to End Program for Autocomplete. When I hit OK it just repeats this process - up to 10 times. Sometimes I have to reset it just to reboot. Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, when ever i use Utorrent to download something, my computer crashes, so i tried swapping Ram ( i have 2Gb x 2 ) and if i run only 1 stick and take the other out, strangley enough it runs fine! But for obvious reasons this is a hassle and would very much want to run it with both sticks in and figure out the problem here.

much appreciated.

i have Windows 7 64bit BTW.

Answer:uTorrent causing computer to lock up. Had this problem for over a year.

You have answered your own question, probability is that RAM module may be defective. You can verify that by running memtest, for minimum of 8 passes (first with both modules installed, then with one module at a time), however, it would be more appropriate to let it run through the night and see whether it reports any errors. Hey everyone,
Hopefully someone can help me on this. Whenever I put a CD into either of my CD roms (Yamaha CDR(W), Toshiba DVD) it will cause my computer to restart. Also, if I boot up with a CD already in the drive, when it gets to windows, it will reboot. Ive just recently installed a new hard drive, and took out my old one.
Also, in BIOS now for some reason, it used to say Primary Master and Primary Slave for my CD Roms, but now its Secondary Master and Secondary Slave. Guess it doesnt matter, but trying to provide as much info as I can.
Anyways, can anyone please help?
Thanks a ton
Kevin

When web browsing I will hear clicking in the background and firefox will stop being the main window (the blue bar ontop will go faded and i will need to click it again to be able to scroll/type). When playing fullscreen games they will randomly minimize. If i'm on the internet for 5 or more minutes the clicking will get progrossively worse and my system will crash and reboot without warning. Recently I've been having audio ads playing with no video or ads on current web pages. My windows live and battle.net accounts have been hacked too.

I have installed zonealarm and set everything to ask and it seems to have stopped the audio ads and clicking after the system crashed previously but I do not know if this is just a temporary fix. I do AVG antivirus, spybot search&destroy and malwarebytes anti malware scans daily and they do usually come up with stuff. AVG resident shield is on and blocks threats frequently too but are mostly tracking cookies.

I would like any help that would get rid of these problems with a complete reformat and instillation being the last available option. If there is any more information you need please just ask.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I recently bought a ryzen 7 1700 and installed it on a new ASUS ROG Strix B350-f motherboard, I updated my Bios to the latest, I have the latest windows updates, drivers are up to date. But I get random system lockup, even at idle. The idle temps are 36-38 degrees Celsius. I have reset the system bios multiple times to default setting and it still happens. When I run a stress test on aida64 I get max temps of 62C, it seems to work fine, no errors but it just keeps randomly locking up the system. Screen looses signal, and the computer cannot be turned off even if you long press the power button, I have to pull the plug from the power supply. I have replaced the motherboard, as I thought it was the issue but still. Even on the stock cooler it was doing the same so I bought a liquid cooling system. My system specs are as follows: Ryzen 7 1700 Asus ROG Strix B350-f Ballistix Sport LT 8GBx2 DDR4 2666 EVGA GTX1060 6GB SSC PSU:gigabyte b700h 700w AIO Cooling: ID-Cooling Frostflow+ 240 Chasis: Gigabyte Horus AX All components bought brand new. please help me, I have tried everything, resitting the cooler and all. I have a virus similar to W32/IRCBot.worm which causes a computer to continually restart on it's own (3-5x/day). Have done several scans with McAfee A.V. 10 (and other programs) in and out of "safe mode" and cannot find anything. However, computer continues to restart.

I use Win2000 Pro with SP4
Use and have all the following:
McAfee A.V. 10
AdAware SE Plus (incl AdWatch)
SpyBlaster
Spy Bot
Panda Security Scan (done via internet)
House Calls (done via internet)
Ewido
Killbox
HiJack This

Have not provided a HJT log yet not sure how or where you might want me to start. This is a very frustrating problem. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Virus causing computer to restart; can't find

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Hey,
I have a pc i've had for about a year or two. I've never really had any trouble with the pc, i play counter-strike and other older games quite often. Recently i purchased and installed Final Fantasy XI (an online rpg game) and i've run into some issues. Randomly, while playing the game (it's happened about 3 times in the past 3 days) my computer screen goes black, and after about 5 seconds begins to boot up (as if i restarted it). from a quick google search i found that this problem may be because of some kind of power supply malfunction, so im posting it here.

i know next to nothing about computer hardware, so any help is greatly appreciated.

i'll list the specs of my pc real quick:

pentium4 cpu 2.4 ghz
256 mb RAM
NVidia Geforce4 MX 440 with AGP8x

im not sure what other specs to give or where to find them

so yeah, please help :X thanks!

Mike

You meet all the requirements for that game, but just barely. Have you tried updating the drivers for your graphics card? Have you got the latest patch for that game. It could be a psu issue like you say, so can you get the wattagge of your psu and the amps on the 12v rail on the psu sticker?

Hello!

I think a virus is causing my computer to run very slow. The mouse is constantly turning to an hourglass symbol. Some applications aren't functioning like adobe acrobat. I also can hardly restart, the computer keeps going into start-up repair and failing. It took me 12-15 times to do my last boot. Also note that there are over 20 windows updates ready to install as a result of me doing a system restore. At first I thought that maybe there was a corrupt update but now I think it's a virus. I'm not sure how to proceed, can anyone help me? Here's my info:

This issue came up a few days ago, I was just surfing the web and talking to friends on teamspeak when suddenly my computer froze, then it seemed to turn off. However, several seconds later it booted back up. This started happening more and more frequently and now it happens a few minutes after I turn on the computer.

I don't know what's causing this to happen and I would greatly appreciate any help in diagnosing the problem, as well as trying to fix it.

I'm not very knowledgable about computers and so if you guys can explain the lingo to me as well that would be helpful.

EDIT: I'm posting this on my laptop but most of my work is on the computer and I need to fix it asap.

Answer:How do I figure out what's causing my computer to freeze and restart?

From what you describe it could well be a temperature issue.
Are you seeing a BSOD when the machine is crashing ?
Is it actually shutting down or is it hard crashing as if the power were removed ?
Does the machine reboot afterwards ok ?

You could try running this and uploading the log files may give us a bit more info to work with including any dump files if any were created

I need some help here with my sound. First of all I have a really crappy computer and I'll be getting a new one soon, but for now here is my question: I have an eMachines C2825, 1gb RAM, 2.08 ghz AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor, running windows XP. I've never had problems until recently. I have on-board sound, no fancy sound card installed but it is definitely the root of my problems.

Here's the deal, my sound seems to be failing me, I'm sure I have the correct drivers because I've had this computer for a good 3 years now and the sound has been crystal clear up until now. If I start my computer and log on, the normal log on sound is cracked and crackling and skips. Then I try to play music and all it does is stutter and skip. Now here's the really weird parts! 1. If I log off or switch user, the sound then becomes completely unusable until the computer is restarted. 2. If I'm playing music in any type of media player (I've tried Windows Media Player, iTunes, and Foobar2000) and I click on a new song, it will simply not play, it will sit at 0:00 and not play, no matter what track it is. This happens across all 3 of the programs. This is where it's even weirder, if I close the program, it restarts my whole computer automatically.

Thanks in advance for anyhelp

Hi,I built my computer from second hand parts (all working perfectly well in other computers) but I'm experiencing a glitch with the graphics card (I assume).....I tried to install dr divx codec pack and windows crashed out to the POST routine just as the installation was nearing its end. I also set my aquarium screensaver from the winxp addon pack and after a few minutes same thing....crash back to POST! but the sytem runs fine on other screensavers such as the robot circus. The graphics card is from creative geforce2..motherboard is gigabyte 7vtxe with 2000xp and 256 ddr266. Ive tried different drivers from nvidia but no good and everything in device manager looks fine.....help! thanks

Answer:graphics problem causing computer to restart????

Oh the old story. Just because a set of components worked perfectly well in a previous life (or box) doesn't mean to say that they're going to cohabitate successfully in a new one. In this case, no doubt others will advise differently but I'll revert to my normal extreme. Firstly make sure that everything is properly connected and none of the cards wobble. Try to work backwards, unistalling the software that you think caused the problem (I suspect you've done this already). Make sure that you only have one of the Nvidia drivers on board - the older cards could get funny if you didn't uninstall the old drivers completely before installing the new - there's a program around called Detonator Destroyer which was effective in blowing old ones out of the water. And if all else fails, a clean install of the OS and known good drivers may be in order (well, it might be the quickest way to fix matters). Then go gently.

i've been having these problems with my computer where it would just crash automaticall restart or just freeze and the sound that comes through my speakers while its frozen is just like a buzzing noise looping over and over.

and all this ONLY occurs when i'm playing a game.

for example, when i'm on the internet browsing, watching videos on you tube, chatting on aim, listening to music, downloading things, the computer is fine, no restarts no nothing at all even if i do all this for 5+ hours.

now when i play a game like runescape, it restarts/froze/crashed<Snipped>

note that it doesn't restart as soon as i turn the game on, it usually lets me play for about 5 mins maybe 10 mins tops than it restarts freezes or crashes.

my brother said he thinks its the video card because he said when he bought it, it was a refurbished one.

basic comp specs

OS: windows vista ultime
ram: 2gb
vid card: geforce 7800 gt
processor: amd athlon 64x2 dual core 5000+ 2.6 ghz

anyone know what the source of this problem could be? i tried downloading and installing the latest drivers already, still doesn't work. same problem.

could it be the graphics card or something else? i'm guessing graphics card since its refurbished...but anyone else know?

Answer:Video Card causing computer to Crash-Freeze-Restart ?

Hello,

Did you remove the old drivers? Use Driver cleaner pro to remove all your nvidia drivers then reinstall the latest ones.

Driver Cleaner Professional download from Guru3D.com

Also get ATiTool. Could be your video card is getting to hot.

ATITool - Overclocking utility for ATI and NVIDIA cards

Check your temps. Make sure your cideo card is not overheating. As that could also be the issue.

Cheers,
Mak

Hi,

My computer installed Spywarebot and Virus Protect Pro which I understand are rogue Spyware. I have tried and apparently successfully removed them using by scanning with SpyHunter, Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware, Registry Mechanic, Spyware Doctor, AVG Anti Malware and my MacAfee Virus scanner.

However, everytime I turn off or restart my computer, it starts up to the windows XP welcome screen, hangs there then reboots and continues to do this cycle. Here is the HJT log:

Hi there I'm Chris, I was redirected here by Broni who was helping with my issue, which was at the time getting random pop ups and redirections...I installed Microsoft Essentials antivirus, downloaded all the necessary programs per Broni and had it working a lot better. My problem is when I'm directed to restart my computer..it will not start up normally anymore. Takes me to the Windows Recovery screen and I have to do a system restore to gain access once again. Once I do a system restore my antivirus disappears and also pretty sure all the other stuff I was directed to do disappears as well. Also when I did my last save point it will not restore from that point. I have to go back a few days and even then it takes atleast 4 tries from my system restore to actually start up Windows. I am very sure I have a rootkit and some other nasties messing with my computer because I will hear random music playing in the background even when no site has anything running and I'm not using iTunes...only lasts for a few seconds. My redirect is to a site that says News Daily 7 and when I click off it, it asks me if I want to leave the page and I say yes and it pops up a smaller window that has like ad topics in it. I have had an annoying problem for some time now where the PC will randomly freeze. Nothing will get out of this situation apart from powering down. Control, Alt & Del does not work either. Even the DPI lights on my G5 mouse will not alter if the buttons are pressed.
I have tried the usual RAM tests etc. but I have now unplugged my DVD/CD drive (SATA) and it hasn't locked up since.
Could this be purely coincidental or is there some connection with the drive that can cause random freezing?

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

When I connect my Pactor PTC-IIusb modem to the USB ports on my New Thinkpad 10e 3G computer, the Pactor modem loses connection and locks up.  I am using Windows 10, have updated all drivers and the Bios from the Lenovo website,  use the latest Airmail V3.04.062 software for modem commuication with my SSB radio, have installed new ferrite beads to all cables, and have suscessfully tested the same setup on another Windows 10 computer.   I have also tested other USB paripheral devices on my Thinkpad and had no issues.  The Pactor modem uses the USB to create a Serial (COM) Port to transfer data with the computer.  I also tested a USB - GPS antenna which also creates a COM port with no problems on the Thinkpad.  Can anyone provided suggestions on how to fix this issue.

Hi,
I have searched some re. AVG but am not security savvy, so any help appreciated!
Purchased AVG 9.0 and I think it's giving all sorts of lockup and hanggggiiing problems (email, internet, everything!). And it seems to take forever to 'resolve' anything...it directs me when 'threat' appears to 'look at file' but takes me instead to a knowledge base screen not to actual file...and there's never a way to know if it's really resolved, since there's no "done" or " removed" box - I find it very time-consuming and the navigation very cumbersome...I don't want to spend 20 min. every time I turn on computer!

Any alternatives! I spent $40 or so on this, but I can't take much more!

My friend just purchased an M-Audio Delta 44 sound card and he's been experiencing problems with it. He doesn't have net access so he can't ask this question himself.

First he installed the card into an available PCI slot as the instructions said to do. He turned on his machine and everything was going fine, he installed the drivers from the included CD-ROM and all seemed to go well. The audio card was working perfectly. He tested out playback and recording function and everything was fine. He restarted his computer and when it came to boot back up, it would immediately lock up. He restarted again and the same problem persisted. He decided to take his card out and try booting up again but this time it didn't lock up and he was able to get into Windows. He reinstalled the card again and used the same drivers from the disc. The card worked fine again after he installed it but again, after a restart, the machine would lock up.

I went to the manufacturers website and downloaded an updated driver and burned it to a CDR and dropped it at his house. He tried installing the card with the new drivers but still, this problem wouldn't end. He's tried installing the card into each of his PCI slots and nothing helped.

He's pretty lost right now about what could be the problem and so am I. I'm hoping that someone here can help us out.

To note, his computer is a Compaq 500 series with a 700mhz AMD processor, 192mb of SDRAM and Windows ME... Read more

Hi all, I installed a video player by online download "Divx" that was required to watch an on line movie site. It started locking my screen when it attempted to "update" so I deleted the files. It still locks about once a week and when I re start I have a notice that a Divx update is available. Whether I postpone or close I get no option to stop the updates. Thanks

Answer:internet update causing lock up?

I would try using Revo Uninstaller to remove all DivX files from the system. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller: 1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake. 2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps. 5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is done scanning for files and other things that did not get removed, you will be presented with this window: . You will want to select only the bolded items, then click on Delete. If any entries-usually the last thing listed and not in bold-have a ... Read more

I have for computers, 2 desktops, 2 notebooks. The desktops are using dlink pci cards and a dlink ethernet switch. The laptops are using linksys wireless pc cards. All four computersare connected. The network seems to be fine (I can view all computers, can access my printer, share the internet) except that the laptops will lock-up when the network cards are installed.
This happens very frequently, and has basically rendered the network useless. Sometimes when the computers lock up if you remove the card then the computers will unfreeze, other times removing the card will not help and the comp has to be rebooted.
Neither computer freezes when the pc card is not connected.
Both laptops are running Win Xp. I have disabled Xp's firewall.
I am at a lose. If anyone has any suggestions I would be so appreciative to hear about it.
Thank You
taam

Answer:Network is causing computers to lock-up

I had a similar problem when using an Orinoco wireless card. When the card is searching for the network...or trying to connect the whole laptop would hang. I eventually got newer drivers that made it much less frequent.

I now have a cisco 350 card and I have never had a problem with it.

It was bad because the cards would hand the machines even when they were withing 10ft of the AP.

My suggestion is to look for driver and firmware updates on the AP and the cards.

I had Just recently had my PC lock up with no sign of life, i immediately thought the power supply went, but saw the green light still on so then thought the motherboard and went and bought a new one and put everything back together and still no response.. no fans no post. So my friend said must be a vid card and I never heard of that having fried many of cards in the past but after pulling everything out as for expansions and memory and then had fans and post. so put them back in one by one until I didn't get a response again and then found the culprit.. one of my 8500 GT's was dead.

I've never heard of that, anyone else ever have this or is it a freak thing?

I've had Windows 10 running on my Optiplex 3020 for a while now with no real problems. Recently an automated update is causing the pc to lock during the reboot. I get a black screen with circling dots which stays for hours without changing. I have to turn the pc on and off a few times to get it to recover to the previous version which works fine. I have run the Dell dignostics which updated a few drivers but the problem still occurs. Windows is trying to install the update every few days. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Answer:Windows 10 update causing pc to lock

dfmarshall,It is hard to say what is causing the problem. If all your drivers are updated and the computer was running fine prior to the update then, there is something in the Microsoft Update causing problems. Unplug any devices connected to the computer and disable any anti-virus or utility programs. Once you have done that try the update. If that does not resolve the issue. Contact Microsoft about the update.

I have just returned from a client who's Windows XP SP2 station is using IE6.0. When they tried to to use the CTRL+O option to type in a website (any site) when they hit enter the browser would be non responsive for 1 minute or more then finally go to the site. After disabling services in msconfig and reenabling 1 at a time I have determined that the Windows Acquisition Interface was causing IE to lock up. I research and found this service is for digital image acquisition I left it off and all is well - should I be concerned about other items being effected - he has no camera or scanner just uses Internet, Email and printing.

I am running Adobe Flash Professional CC on a Toshiba AMD laptop running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

None of the dialog windows in Flash CC function properly; the window opens but the buttons don't work. Some dialog windows cause the application to lock and I have to close it via Task Manager.
I wonder if another process is conflicting with Flash Pro CC.

I've attached a screenshot of all the processes that are running. I've checked each process on the excellent site:
Windows startup programs - Database search and I don't see an obvious culprit.

Does anyone see a process that I should get rid of? Or do you have any other suggestions?
The computer has recently been scanned by CC Cleaner, MalwareBytes, Avast Free Anti-virus and SpyBot.

Answer:Are background processes causing my application to lock?

Your screen print shows you have 62 processes running but there are not 62 processes in the list.
You need to click Show processes from all users to see all the processes running.

Hey guys,

I've been here on Tech Support Guy before and everyone's been extremely helpful so before i start wanted to thank everyone again.

Was wondering if anyone could help me:

Purchased a new laptop - ASUS G51JX-X5 Gaming Laptop. My computer freezes sometimes and it's caused by the disc drive. I first noticed it when i was burning dvds. After burning a DVD, the software pops up notifying me the writing was successful and immediately the laptop freezes. This also applies to DVD-DL's but strangely enough it didn't happen when i burned a CD (only did it once).
After noticing it happening after burning DVD-R/DVD-DL's it happened again after trying to install a game via a DVD disc. The installation screen would load, then the entire computer would freeze.

I went to my event viewer and found this under application logs around the time of most recent freeze/lockup:
WARNING - LMS Service cannot connect to Intel(R) MEI driver

As well as this in system event logs:
WARNING - A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Component: PCI Express Root Port
Error Source: Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express)

Busevice:Function: 0x0:0x3:0x0
Vendor IDevice ID: 0x8086:0xd138
Class Code: 0x30400
Now i'd like to make note that i THINK my disc drive is PCI-E so i beleive this correlates.

XP Pro SP2

This is sorta related to a previous thread of mine..but sorta seperate.

Anyone know of a windows update that causes user accounts to lock up / not allow a password to be entered even though its the right password?

It keeps happening to me, and i know its not software b/c this is the third clean install in 2 weeks with still the same issue...even without installing software other than office 2003 it happens.

Short and sweet... three user accounts (one admin, two poweruser) I log on as admin, lock the desktop (WIN+L), come back a few min later, log on to a poweruser acct., log off the power user acct, try to log on my admin user acct and it wont accept my password even though i was just on it and its is still open and shows me as logged on. It also locks out the poweruser accts.!!

The only thing i can do hard boot it....and this only happens once and a while...very intermitent. im gonna really hurt someone or myself soon....

ERRRRRRRRRR!!!!! All "critcal" windows updates installed, and net framework and WMP10 installed. and updated....and no i have not see a pinpoint pattern of any of the updates that can cause this. I have also used the drivers that worked fine on my previous install..and also the latest...no luck....it must be M$ updates
Thanks for reading

Script: file:///C:/Users/A6/AppData/Roaming/IDM/idmmzcc5/components/idmhelper5.js:91"

I have uninstalled and reinstalled IDM twice but no cure.

We have two laptops that are exactly the same at my house, we are using a 108Mb/s wireless netgear router along with 108Mb/s wireless netgear PC cards for the laptops. About a month ago I updated the wireless PC card driver software to the latest version from netgear's site on one of the laptops. I noticed a while after that the card would lock up occasionally but it could be removed and reinserted to get it working again. I installed the same software on the second laptop. After more time passed the laptops started freezing up requiring a hard reboot. I decided to go back to the older version of the driver software but the problem still exists. Is anyone else having this problem with netgear's PC cards? Crappy drivers? Any recomendations on how to remedy this problem?

I was wondering if there is software that can show me what process(s) might be running or causing a program to stop functioning.I am using Cakewalk Sonar 8.3 (audio/midi recording & playback software) on my Dell Inspiron M6400 laptop.  During playback of midi files using VST and DXI synths, playback may stop at any given moment.  It doesn't happen to often.  Maybe once every few hours.  We use this during performances so if this happens during a performance, I must restart sonar.  Fortuneately I do not need to reboot the computer but it still is a problem.  This laptop is used only for my music and is not connected to the internet.  WIFI is disabled and all unnecessary functions have been disabled.  I would like to find a way to see what processes or services are running when Sonar locks up.  It would be very helpful is there is some software that could be running in the background that would identify running processes or services.  In this way, I may be able to isolate what may be interfering with Sonar.Any help would be greatly appreciated.ThanksJan Dell Inspiron M6400 3.06 mhz   1gb  1067mhz ram   Roland UA101 usb external DAW.

Hi guys,

A couple of months ago I built a new system and made the jump to Windows 8.

Everything runs great apart from one thing - my secondary hard drive (which is the old one from my old rig) is having issues, which I am now only using for all my less-important programs, and movies, games and general files.

Whenever I open up the drive in Computer or Explorer, it will lock up the window/freeze for 10-20 seconds before returning to normal, in which I can then use it again. It will work for normally for around 5-10 minutes before the lockup returns.

* I have the hard drive split into two partitions. Both do the same thing.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Answer:Secondary hard drive causing freezing issues/lock ups

Hello Josh, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It sounds like you have your power plan settings set to turn off your hard disks after being idle for the 5-10 minutes. The tutorial below can help show you how to turn off and stop this.
Hard Drive - Turn Off Hard Disk After Idle or Never - Windows 7 Help Forums
Hope this helps,

Hello All,

I have a challange for all you out there. I have attached a blown up screenshot of two MS Word .doc files that have this weird black & white clock icon on lower left hand side it looks like a octogon clock icon, but I have never seen it before. That small black & white icon is on all documents with the following extentions (.xls, .doc, .txt, .rtf) there could be more, but I haven't found it.

Now here is the problem....all of the files with that little icon do not open. it locks up and I have to close the file....sometimes forcing windows to do it form since it isn't closing on it's own.

Anyone seen this?

Answer:Weird MS Office Program on the Actual Icon - Causing lock ups

So I guess by the lack of responses, people are as stumped about this as me?

Thanks ahead of time for any ideas

Re: would know if ican setup a lock screen wheny computer boots up to completly lock

Don't log in :-D

Use a very difficult password. We have plenty of password generators on majorgeeks.
Enable the system admin account and password protect it.
Those two are probably enough. How advanced is he?

Everytime I hook up an External USB HD to my computer, after using it for about a minute, it will just do a cold restart. I I've used 2 different USB External HD Cases (I dont know the brands), and 2 different HD's. Both HD works on different comp setups, as do both HD Cases. Whereas reinstalling my OS may fix the problem (since they both work on other comps), I'd rather that be my last resort. I'm running Win XP SP2 (current updates). Just upgraded to an AMD 4200+ X2, Asus mobo, 1gb dual channel ram, etc. The system runs perfectly fine if it wasn't for anytime I want to use a usb external HD case, it'll crash. Mini-usb thumb drives work fine. I've also tried using every single usb port with the cases. I've also tried using them in safe mode. Reformatting doesn't work, which by the way I can only get through a quick reformat before it restarts, otherwise a full format it'll restart at about 5% done. But like said, I've used them (reformatted, and even played games off the HD) on other rigs. Pretty much at my wits end on what the problem could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton.

Oh, I also made sure under system performance that "restart computer" is unchecked when an error occurs. Still no error msg though, just cold restart.

Hi All

I have a user who has a Satellite Pro 300 which has been working OK since he got it.
Recently he reported to me that the Laptop keeps restarting. I checked the Laptop out and made sure he is switching the laptop off, which he was doing. I went into the BIOS to see if Wake on LAN was switched on, it was not.

What happens is the user hits shutdown (Win XP with latest updates) the laptop does shutdown but after about 2 -3 mins fires back up.
Before I log a service call I wanted to make sure I had covered all possibilities?

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Murray

Answer:LAN causing restart of Satellite Pro P300

Does the notebook power up if the LAN cable is not connected?

You could also try to disable the Wake up on LAN option in the LAN card properties.
(Device manager -> LAN card -> properties -> advanced tab)

Check how it will work?

This was working up until this week.
Now when I put my desktop into Sleep, it restarts and in the Event Viewer I see this "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

I tried powercfg -h /off and /on
I used the windows memory tester and it was fine

For some reason when I try to sleep my desktop it thinks the power was cut and just restarts.

It does not BSOD since I do not see it happening the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp is old.

Fast Startup is turned off

Any one have any other ideas to fix it.

I was working on an EMachine desktop that would not boot. It would come up to the log in, the password was typed in and then it would go back to the log in screen. If I tried safe boot, it would just restart. My customer's girlfriend's cousin said it was because of the battery. I thought that sounded far fetched, but wanted to check with the experts to see if that was possible. I thought on a desktop that the function of the battery was to keep the clock going and it did not have anything to do with the boot process as the electricity would handle that.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Hi everyone!

Just Installed Vista Bussines. I realy hope it a good idea.
while installing I had alot of problems (had to reinstall a few times), main problem was after the installation. Vista had load up for the first time, and then screen turned black and I could only see the cursor. after a few minutes the computer restarted. a few installation and i discovered that if i push a button on the keyboard (random one) it won't restart but start to work. now that I can get into vista it almost stopped do that.
But now I get more problems
I work on the computer for a few minutes and then there's a pop-up saying something about RPC service failing and svchost shutting down. few minutes/seconds later the computer restarts.
I remembered somthing in XP with turning off windows update but it didn't work.
a few problems that came with (not sure they're related, just started using Vista today):
-long time loading from POST to beggining of windows startup.
- computer still startup as black screen with a cursor in the middle, stuck this way till the computer boots.

will write more and try to add windows log about RPC and svchost.
Thanks alot in advance

Hi Team,
Writing this post to find an answer to BSOD error in my PC. I have windows 7 in my PC(this was re-installed around 1.5 months back).
I have been facing intermittent BSOD's in my PC since last 2 weeks.

I have tried verifying the dump file using BlueScreenViewer & the driver causing this looks to be ntoskrnl.exe. The error is "Critical_Object_Termination" & error code - 0x000000f4.

I have been trying to find a solution for it, but online search shows there can be couple of reasons for this error including hardware & driver issues. I haven't taken any step yet.

I am new to BSOD's. Can someone please let me know, the exact cause of this error after analyzing the attached dump files. I have also shared screenshots from the BlueScreenViewer.

Also, I see this happening intermittently (sometimes after couple of days), when performing certain tasks like - Scanning PC with installed antivirus(Bitdefender Internet Security I my case), or opening PDF doc. in my browser. Just thought of sharing this info. as well, if there happens to be some connection with this.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated & Thanks in advance..

Regards,
Dinesh

ive been having these random restarts in the middle of the night lately and its starting to piss me off. is there like a log file in windows that writes down everything that i do? maybe i can check in there. or a program that will report to me whats wrong once the PC reboots?

Answer:is there a program that can tell you wahts causing your PC to restart on its own?

Perhaps event viewer (control panel -> administrative tools -> event viewer).

You might also be getting blue screens o' death, so disabling automatic restart on errors would be helpful.

Go to system properties (control panel -> system or right click 'My Computer' and go to Properties). In that window click on the Advanced tab and go to 'Startup and Recovery' Settings. Uncheck the 'Automatically restart' box.

Next time the restarts happen, and if it really is error related, then you'll get to see a nice blue screen with some nice debug messages.

Im posting this on behalf of my bf, he recently bought a second hand computer with on board sound, when he tried to update the onboard sound drivers, the computer restarted and mentioned something about media cable failure, and when he checked 'blue screen view' it said something about Portcl.sys, i have researched this and i read up that its about the sound which is ironic.
he has disabled the sound in the bios on boot-up.
how can he get his sound to work without his computer restarting?
thanks for your help in advance.
Hollie

Answer:Onboard sound causing restart

From where did he try to update to onboard sound drivers?

Is this system one that was built by an individual or is like an HP, Dell, etc.?

If the onboard sound continues to give issues he could install a relatively inexpensive sound card.

Hi,

My X1800GTO arrived yesterday and since I put it in, evertime I restart the PC I get one long beep and three short beeps, and because it is an American Megatrends BIOS this means that some recently installed memory is faulty and could be seated incorrectly.

So before I was going to take the side off and make sure it was in properly I went to get some food and when I came back I could start it up just fine with out any error codes and everything worked.

But, everytime I restart it now I get the error code and have to wait around 15 minutes until I can turn it back on. So, is this not a physical issue? Because I didn't have to touch any of the components.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Any reply is appreciated.

I'll post this here, since it seems a little more relevant.

I reinstalled win98 on a compaq. Did this just to get some docs off before trying to use the factory restore discs.

Now, when I re-install the NIC card (what I thought would be the easiest way to get the docs off) it causes the comp to restart. Without the NIC, in safe mode, or with the NIC disabled, it will restart just fine.

If the card is in, or just plugged in, it won't finish loading windows. I can't even select "yes" when it asks me if I want to reinstall the drivers if the card is in.

I've been working on this for the better part of 2 days...

EDIT

Card is a Linksys LNE100TX. I've downloaded the drivers several times. Originally thought my problem was from incorrect drivers. Downloaded the newest ones and still doesn't work. Comp is a compaq with k6 processor and 56 mb of ram...

do you have another pc that you could try and install the card into? it could just be faulty...

Browser: Opera 9

VirusScanner McAffee Virus Sheild Corporate

Whenever I visit a site that has a flash player component such as a banner or an add, the whole workstation locks up for 30 to 40 seconds and the virus scanner is pegged out at 99 CPU. Once a site, any site is loaded that has a flash component, opening additional ones does not cause this to happen again, it only happens on the initial loading of Flash, but is repeatable if the browser is closed. Changing the virus scanner is not an option, it is part of the group policy and I would rather not change my browser, since my other alternative is IE6.

Hi everyone, We supplied 4 x Lenovo ThinkCentre M93P Tiny Desktops (Model: 10AB003SAU) to a business customer earlier in the year. They are all running Windows 7 64-bit with 500GB 7000RPM SATA drives. Late last week to early this week (approx 17 April 2015 to 20 April 2015) an update came through Lenovo System Update for Lenovo Active System Protection V1.0.0.21 which the customer installed on all four of their systems. Since then, all four systems have been hanging & locking up during use & then require a hard reset for the systems to be usable again until the problem reoccurs next time then the same thing over & over. I spent a heap of time going over the systems trying to work out the cause of this issue which has cost me an absolute fortune in lost productivity & lost revenue. It also lost the customer a lot of time & renenue due to the systems being problematic over a number of days. Thanks very much Lenovo! Won't get any of that time or lost labour back! Customer is furious with both us & Lenovo over this matter, we will likely lose future business due to this. Hoping this may save someone else a major headache if they see this post early enough as I assume problem would be relatively widespread if people are using Lenovo Update. If anyone else has or had this issue recently then please comment. Very disappointed with this probl... Answer:** Lenovo Active Protection System V1.0.0.21 Causing Windows 7 64-bit to randomly lock up **

I just had the very same problem with a 10A5 0006 (M93 without "p"). Customer reported the issue on Friday, 8th of May after apparently suffering silently through the issue for a few days already, saying that it becomes worse, and that he has to restart the machine sometimes every quarter of an hour. Thankfully customer was able to say that the problems started in the last week of April already, and indeed, on the 16th the machine last installed Windows Updates, and on the 19th the aforementioned Active Protection Of Doom 1.0.0.21. I already began back tracing (read: uninstalling one by one) the updates from that day when I stumbled over your post. In all fairness, I would probably not have even touched the Lenovo update, thinking first of a MS foobar. This post saved me from having to invest several hours of time, not to mention that I will be now prepared if the next machine with the similar issue comes around the corner (I need to service roundabout 50 M93p's from the last half year, I betcha there will be more) Thanks

Another way to put it: No graphics driver for Windows 10 64-bit is working! I noticed the laptop one day started to freeze when clicking on things in the task bar, or system tray, and boots very slowly.  It freezes for about 10 to 30 seconds before becoming available again.  Through a LOT of troubleshooting I was able to determine it was being caused by the graphics driver.  Windows 10 has a "helpful" feature of upgrading your drivers (even if you turn it off) and this laptop obviously doesn't like the one that was chosen for it. The graphics driver package (sp71870) for this model does NOT contain a valid graphics driver (at least it doesn't detect the adapter during install).  I tried to download the latest driver directly from AMD and it's the one causing the problem!I opened a ticket with AMD and they were unable to assist and asked that I contact HP instead.  Can't open a ticket as this thing is now out of warranty (of course). If I attempt to remove/roll back the driver it causes problems with Windows where explorer.exe crashes over and over again. Please help! So, when Mists of Pandaria came out, I replaced my video card to use the game better. Video improved dramatically with the GTX 550Ti card installed but I've noticed that when I log into WoW now, my fan ramps up and my computer has started hard crashing and restarting in the middle of game play. I updated all the drivers but it's still happening.

Suggestions? Has someone run into this before? The problem seems to be getting progressively worse.

Hi,

After months of frustration I have finally pinpointed the cause of my programs losing focus. After quickly looking at my processes today every time my Firefox lost focus, I glimpsed "Restart.exe" and confirmed that this program runs for about 10 seconds causing loss of focus of any program that I am running then it disappears. This is very annoying when gaming or typing (I have had to reclick this window 5 times already while typing this paragraph).

This program will run about 50 or so times in a row for 15 min (aprox), then I might not notice it happening again for days or weeks. Just now it has been running every 2 min or so for the last 30 min although the timing seems to be random ~ it can happen every 20 secs and once I noticed it happening every time I stopped typing for a few seconds. I would love to know what it is and how I can stop it. If I am quick and try to remove it from my process tree, it sometimes will not let me (I get an error message) unless I remove it as soon as it pops up (which involves me staring at the task manager.

Any ideas?

Answer:Restart.exe causing loss of focus ~ Virus?

I figured out what it was...not why...

It is part of the logitech desktop messenger. I found the file and renamed it, now I occassionaly get a pop up telling me that "restart.exe" cannot be found and this message stays in the background....alot less annoying.

I posted on the Logitech forums, not reply as to what it is.
